BMW Recalls More Than 500,000 Cars for Cable Problem
An investigation by the Canadian automotive safety agency, Transport Canada, led BMW to recall almost 505,000 vehicles in the United States for a possible loss of electrical power that could cause the engine to stall.
The recall covers the 2008–12 1 Series; the 2007–11 3 Series and the 2009–11 Z4, according to a report from BMW posted on the Web site of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
By far the largest number – about 297,000 – are the 3 Series sedans.
16.2 Million Vehicles Recalled in 2012, Safety Agency Says
A total of 16.2 million vehicles were recalled last year, with slightly more than half made by Toyota and Honda, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Thursday.
Toyota had 12 recalls covering 5.3 million vehicles, more than the three domestic automakers combined. The recalls included the automaker’s Scion and Lexus operations.
Honda and its Acura luxury brand had 16 recalls affecting almost 3.4 million vehicles.

Toyota Agrees to Settle Lawsuit Tied to Accelerations – 12/26/12DETROIT — Toyota Motor agreed on Wednesday to pay more than $1 billion to settle a class-action lawsuit related to issues of unintended acceleration in its vehicles. The proposed settlement, filed in a Federal District Court in California, would be one of the largest of its type in automotive history. If the agreement is approved by Judge James V. Selna, Toyota would make cash payments for the loss of value on vehicles affected by multiple recalls and install special safety features on up to 3.2 million cars. Honda Recalling 807,000 S.U.V.’s and MinivansHonda is recalling 807,000 utility vehicles and minivans because of a defect that could allow the vehicles to roll away, the automaker said in a news release. The recall covers the 2003-4 Honda Pilot and Odyssey and the 2003-6 Acura MDX. There are 259,000 Pilots, 318,000 Odysseys and 230,000 MDXs involved. In addition to the vehicles being recalled in the United States, 64,000 are being recalled elsewhere. The money was given to the states during the 2011 fiscal year for “a wide range of safety programs aimed at reducing fatalities, injuries and economic losses resulting from motor vehicle crashes,” according to the inspector general’s announcement Monday. |
