Jenelle Embrey shows no sign of letting up on her efforts to get the federal government to recall some Jeep Cherokees, and she is paying for a trio of billboards to prove it.
The billboards greet motorists on their way to Winchester’s Apple Blossom Festival with a graphic image of a Jeep Cherokee exploding into flames from its rear with skeletons seated inside. The message accompanying the image reads: “Help Save Innocent Families Change.org/DangerousJeeps.

Government Expands Investigation Into Fire Risk of Jeep Grand Cherokee – 6/14/12
More than five million Jeep vehicles are under federal scrutiny after a preliminary investigation revealed an uncommonly high occurrence of fires, some of them deadly, when the vehicles were rear-ended in crashes.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration upgraded its investigation of the Jeep Grand Cherokee from the 1993 to 2004 model years. The upgrade was prompted by a preliminary investigation that found the vehicles’ fuel tanks were uncharacteristically susceptible to rupturing in rear impacts, relative to other vehicles in the S.U.V.’s peer group.

With the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration having decided to upgrade its investigation of rear-impact fires involving Jeep Grand Cherokees, a recall of millions of those vehicles is “certain,” said Clarence Ditlow, the executive director of the Center for Auto Safety, the organization whose work prompted the federal inquiry.
Chrysler produced about three million Grand Cherokees belonging to the affected model years, 1993-2004, of which about 2.2 million were still registered in 2011, according to Experian Automotive.
