The widespread air bag recall affecting about 3.3 million Japanese vehicles last month has apparently spread to BMW as well. BMW says it will recall about 42,000 of its 2002-3 3 Series models because a passenger side air bag defect could send shards of metal into the passenger compartment.

Ford Widens F-150 Recall by 1.2 Million Trucks

by Christopher Jensen

Under pressure from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Ford has agreed to recall an additional 1.2 million pickup trucks because the driver’s air bag may inadvertently deploy.

The models are the 2004-6 F-150s and the 2006 Lincoln Mark LT, a sibling.

In February, Ford recalled about 135,000 F-150s in the United States from the 2005-6 model years, but that was about one-tenth of the number the safety agency said should be recalled.

But for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which has called for 10 times as many vehicles to be recalled, it is a rebuff and a challenge.
The agency says its investigation into 1.3 million F-150s revealed a significant number of incidents involving inadvertent air-bag deployments, the largest such number “in N.H.T.S.A. history.”

The recall covers about 214,000 RAV4s from the 2007-8 model years and 94,000 Highlander and Highlander hybrids from 2008, the automaker informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Thursday.
