An accumulation of road salt may cause the frame mounting surface, where the fuel tank mounting bands are attached, to corrode and possibly detach the fuel tank, which can result in a fuel leak. Remedy: Dealers will inspect and repair the rear frame, as necessary, free of charge. Depending on the extent of any corrosion damage, Honda may offer to repurchase the vehicle. 2019-03-06	AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE	Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling specific 2003 Acura 3.2CL, 2013-2016 ILX, 2013-2014 ILX Hybrid, 2003-2006 MDX, 2007-2016 RDX, 2002-2003 3.2TL, 2004-2006, and 2009-2014 TL, 2010-2013 ZDX and 2001-2007 and 2009 Honda Accord, 2001-2005 Civic, 2003-2005 Civic Hybrid, 2001-2005 Civic GX NGV, 2002-2007 and 2010-2011 CR-V, 2003-2011 Element, 2007 Fit, 2002-2004 Odyssey, 2003-2008 Pilot, and 2006-2014 Ridgeline vehicles. The affected vehicles received a replacement driver air bag inflator as part of a previous Takata inflator recall remedy or a replacement driver air bag module containing the same inflator type as a service part. Due to a manufacturing error, in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver frontal air bag, these inflators may explode. Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver’s air bag inflator with an alternate inflator, free of charge. The recall began April 10, 2019. 2019-10-10	VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:ACCELERATOR PEDAL	Dorman Products, Inc. (Dorman) is recalling certain Accelerator Pedal Assemblies part numbers 699-114 and 825-5029-1, sold as replacement parts for 2003-2006 Acura MDX, 2004-2008 Acura TL and TSX, 2003-2007 Honda Accord, 2005-2006 Honda CR-V, 2007-2011 Honda Element, 2005-2008 Honda Pilot and 2006-2014 Honda Ridgeline vehicles. The rotating portion of the accelerator pedal assembly may bind. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 124, “Accelerator Control Systems.” Remedy: Dorman will notify owners, and qualified service facilities will replace the affected accelerator pedal assemblies, free of charge. Honda is also recalling certain 2011-2012 Acura RL, 2011 Honda Element and 2011-2013 Ridgeline vehicles in Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. Lastly, if not included above, Honda is recalling certain 2010-2011 Honda Element, 2010-2012 Acura RL and 2010-2013 Ridgeline vehicles in Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag air bag inflators assembled as part of the frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment (such as after a vehicle crash necessitating replacement of the original air bags), may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to higher absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling. Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began November 6, 2018. 2016-02-03	AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE	Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain model year 2007-2011 Honda CR-V, 2011-2015 CR-Z, 2010-2014 FCX, and Insight, 2009-2013 Fit, 2013-2014 Fit EV, 2007-2014 Ridgeline, 2013-2016 Acura ILX, 2013-2014 Acura ILX Hybrid, 2007-2016 RDX, 2005-2012 Acura RL, 2009-2014 Acura TL, and 2010-2013 Acura ZDX vehicles. The purpose of this letter is to lodge a complaint against the Service Department of Avery Greene Vacaville Honda, 751 Orange Drive, Vacaville, Ca 95687, regarding my visit on 4 January 2017 to have Warranty service performed on my 2014 Honda Ridgeline, VIN 5FPYK1F73EB013218, which on that date had 42,483 original miles on the odometer. The problem which prompted my visit is as follows:

In December 2016 I began to notice billowing clouds of blue smoke from my exhaust pipe on startup. On watching the problem for the next couple of weeks I noticed that it happened intermittently, usually (but not always) when the engine was cold. Following the initial blue cloud (definitely not black or white smoke), any exhaust gasses became invisible (but I am unable to determine whether my truck was smoking from the exhaust when I was driving). I also noticed that when I started it up while in the driveway (with the intention of pulling the truck into my garage), even if there was no smoke visible the garage would fill with fumes it was so bad that I would have to hold my breath, exit the truck, and sprint into my house to avoid inhaling those fumes.

It quickly became apparent to me (as an amateur mechanic) that somehow oil was finding its way into the combustion chamber and was being burned, resulting in the smoke & fumes. I therefore took the truck to the Honda dealer in order to have them isolate and repair the problem. I spoke with the customer service representative Linda, a very friendly and efficient rep who wrote up my complaint. I left the truck with them and was given a ride home by another friendly person.

Later in the day Linda phoned to say that their service technicians had not been able to replicate the problem, therefore had done no service to the truck, and that I should come pick it up. I told her that this was an unacceptable response to the problem, and that I would come to the dealership to discuss it further. My companion Peggy drove me there and I had a discussion with Linda and a gentleman named Don (who introduced himself as the service manager). When I asked what diagnostic service had been performed, Dan told me that they had started the truck several times and let it run for several minutes, all the while visualizing the exhaust pipe to see if there was any smoke: there was none. Therefore they seemingly decided that there must not be any problem and that my complaint was not valid.

When I suggested an analysis of the exhaust I was told that they do not have the diagnostic equipment; when I suggested a compression test be done, I was told that it would take too long and that they would have to charge me for the labor (likewise to remove and inspect each of the spark plugs); and when I suggested that the PCV valve be changed I was mocked by Don because this model does not even have one he chided me for not knowing that and asked if I were a certified mechanic. He also said that the policy of the service department is to try to replicate the problem and (if unable to do so) to send the customer on their merry way (his words). He also said that, per policy, they could do no more diagnostic testing, and he found this frustrating because, as the Service Manager he was trying to diagnose and correct problems with Honda vehicles with one arm tied behind my back (again, his words).

Eventually they agreed to pull one spark plug to check for oil; they did so and the one they chose was clean. They tried to convince me that this plug would be representative of each of the others but I disagree. They suggested that if I were to allow an oil & filter change, they would fill the crankcase with an exact amount of oil and after 1,000 miles I should bring the truck back for another oil & filter change (at my expense) if the oil consumption was excessive they might be able to perform a more in-depth diagnostic service. I agreed to this and (while Peggy & I went out to lunch) they performed this service. Afterwards I paid for the oil & filter change, retrieved the truck, zeroed the trip odometers, and left. In the next few weeks I will have to endure the fumes and smoke at times when I start my truck, and I am apprehensive about taking it on an extended trip (which I have planned for the end of this month) because Im afraid Ill have engine issues.

To summarize: my Ridgeline is burning oil, which presents a health and safety issue for me; clouds of blue smoke and fumes are being discharged into the environment; and I have been insulted by the service manager at Vacaville Honda when I tried to have this problem corrected.

The office of defects investigation (odi) is expanding the investigation to include the equipment supplier and vehicle manufacturers (oems) using this unit.the investigation focuses on acus manufactured by trw, now zf-trw (zf) , the tier-one supplier to hyundai and kia and the other affected oems.the acu senses a vehicle crash to determine whether air bag deployment is required, and if so, deploys the appropriate air bags and other supplemental restraints.zf supplied subject acus to six oems: fca, honda, hyundai, kia, mitsubishi and toyota.internal to the acu is an electronic component (an application specific integrated circuit, or asic) that monitors signals from crash sensors.a failure of the asic may prevent deployment of the required air bags and devices, or may otherwise affect the proper operation of the acu.the acu is located in the passenger compartment, and electrical wiring connects the asic to sensors located at the front of the vehicle.odi’s current understanding is that a crash event may, in and of itself, produce harmful signals on the sensor wiring capable of damaging the asic, although the probability of this occurring appears to be low.while the acu incorporates electrical circuitry intended to protect the asic from harmful signals, the level and effectiveness of the protective circuitry varies by oem customer.during pe18-003, hyundai and kia filed recalls (18v-137 and 18v-363 respectively) to address a defect that could result in acu disablement and non-deployments.according to the filings, the disablement occurs in certain types of frontal crash events.both filings discussed a condition known as electrical overstress (eos) that affected the subject asic and was likely caused by electrical signals that entered the acu via sensor wiring.the recalled vehicles used acus that had the lowest levels of asic protection while non-recalled hyundai and kia products using subject acus had higher levels of protection.odi has not identified any eos failures in the non-recalled kia and hyundai populations.in september 2016, fca filed recall 16v-668 for certain model year (my) 2010 to 2014 chrysler, dodge and jeep products also manufactured with the subject acu.in that filing, fca also discussed an eos condition that resulted in a failure of the subject asic, which caused air bag non-deployment. fca noted that the defect condition had only been observed in vehicles equipped with sensor harnessing routed across the front of the vehicle.other fca vehicles that also used the subject acu, but not the cross-car harnessing, had not experienced eos failures, despite similar time in service. the recalled fca vehicles used a mid-level form of asic protection.other fca vehicles that did not use cross car wiring, or used higher levels of asic protection, have not been recalled.odi has not identified any eos failures in the non-recalled fca population.recently, odi has identified two substantial frontal crash events (one fatal) involving toyota products where eos is suspected as the likely cause of the non-deployments.the crashes involved a my 2018 and a my 2019 corolla equipped with the subject acu that incorporated higher levels of asic protection.additionally, both acus were found to be non-communicative (meaning the acu could not be read with an event data recorder) after the crash, a condition found in other cases where eos occurred with other oems.no other eos events have been identified for other toyota products (including corolla models that used the subject acu since my 2011), or for the honda and mitsubishi vehicles that use the subject acu.odi plans to evaluate the susceptibility of the subject acu designs to electrical signals, as well as other vehicle factors that can either lead to, or reduce the likelihood of, an eos event.additionally, odi will evaluate whether an unreasonable risk exists that requires further field action.
