2018-06-01	AIR BAGS: AIR BAG/RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE	Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2010-2013 Kia Forte, Forte Koup, 2011-2013 Kia Optima and 2011-2012 Kia Optima Hybrid and Sedona vehicles. In the event of a crash, the air bag control unit (ACU) may short circuit, preventing the frontal air bags and seat belt pretensioners from deploying. Remedy: Kia will notify owners. For model year 2011 Sedona vehicles, Kia will instruct dealers to verify the ACU part number and, if necessary, install an extension wire harness kit between the ACU Connector and the Vehicle Harness Connector. For all other affected vehicles, Kia will instruct dealers to install the extension wire harness kit. The recall began September 28, 2018. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. 2016-06-01	LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:HOOD:LATCH	Kia Motors Corporation (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2006-2014 Kia Sedona vehicles manufactured from June 15, 2005, through April 04, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the secondary hood latch may bind and remain in the unlatched position when the hood is closed. Remedy: Kia will notify owners and dealers will replace the secondary hood latch or clean and lubricate the latch, depending on the vehicle’s location and the condition of the latch. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on July 27, 2016. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542. Kia’s recall number is SC134.
2016-06-01	SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER ARM	Kia Motors Corporation (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2006-2012 Kia Sedona vehicles manufactured from June 15, 2005, through August 14, 2012 and originally sold in, or currently registered in Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. In the affected vehicles, the front lower control arms may break due to corrosion from salt water exposure such as from road salt use. Remedy: Kia will notify owners and dealers will replace the front lower control arms on 2006-2007 models. 2008-2012 models will either have their front lower control arms replaced or additional anti-corrosion coating will be applied. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on July 27, 2016. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542. Kia’s number for this recall is SC133.
2013-11-05	SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER ARM	Kia Motors Corporation (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2006-2012 Kia Sedona vehicles manufactured from June 15, 2005, through August 14, 2012 originally sold in, or currently registered in Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Wisconsin, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, Ohio, Rhode Island, West Virginia or the District of Columbia. In the affected vehicles, the front lower control arms may break due to corrosion resulting from prolonged exposure to salty environments. Remedy: Kia will notify owners and dealers will inspect the degree of corrosion of the front lower control arms, and will either rustproof or replace them, free of charge. The recall began on December 20, 2013. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542. Kia’s recall number is SC100.

the assistant manager at the service department. His story was that the Parking Brake is not supposed to hold the car, but the Parking Lever. I told him that he was wrong and it is something that needed to be solved. He said he was going to do a little checking and call me back. This is apparently a “Kia Line” because when I called Kia Corporation to complain, was told that same line. I will get to that next. I went back to Shawnee Mission Kia and went in to talk to them. By that time, they were at the point of insulting. Another Service Person, Bill – Had a mustache and wore a Hat – Actually quite verbally aggressive told me I had to read my owner’s manual. They use the Owner’s manual as their bible and he told me to read a section under parking brake that actually begins with, “Do not use the Park Lever in place of the Parking Brake. First set the parking brake and then place the lever in park if automatic or …etc.” I told him that it was he who had to read that line because it flat out says that the Parking Brake is what actually holds the car. He said in an insulting tone, “NO, it is not a Parking Brake…It is a Park Brake Assist and it only works when the lever is in Park or Reverse”. Mike the Service Assistant Manager said that I should take it to the Place where I bought it and have them fix it. I told him that was exactly what I was going to do and if not, take it to a Reputable Private Mechanic that actually knew what to do. Mike then said, “If we can be of any service call us or, you could schedule another appointment to bring in the vehicle.” I told him No thank you and went to find the General Manager or the Owner. Did not find him and instead, a car salesman went and got Chris and Mike. We went back to the Service Department and Bill, the mustache and hat person, was still at it. I ultimately just turned around and left. The Parking Brake still does not hold the car and now I have a Block I carry with me to block the wheels when the Van is parked on an incline. My worry is that the Parking Paul will break and the Van roll and cause an accident or worse, run over someone and cause serious injury or death.
Upon leaving Shawnee Mission Kia, I called Olathe Kia and scheduled an appointment. They said they would adjust the brakes correctly and that the squeaking sound was the giveaway because it means that the Parking Brakes are just touching but not holding the vehicle and as such, any motion will cause it to squeak. He said that when they adjust them correctly, they will hold and that squeak will dissappear. So I hope that next week the brake problem is solved.
I also called the 1-800-4KIA number to lodge a complaint. The person I spoke with, who did not give me a case number, all he would ask is “why would you set the parking brake and have the car in Neutral.” All he would ask is how do you set the parking brake because you are “Supposed to set the Parking Brake, then put the car in park and that holds your car.” No matter how many times he was told that the car would roll until the transmission locked, or that you could drive the car normally with the Parking Brake Set because it does nothing, he always came back to ask why, set the parking brake with the car in neutral. I told him finally. My owner’s manual states the following, “To engage the parking brake, first apply the foot brake and then depress the parking brake pedal down as far as possible. In addition, it is RECOMMENDED (recommended, not required) that when parking the vehicle in a gradient, the shift lever should be in a low gear on Manual vehicles or P in Automatic transmissions” (This is in page 4-15 of my owner’s manual.) (Page 4-15 of my Owner’s manual states “To prevent unintentional movement when stopped and leaving the vehicle, do not use the gearshift lever in place of the parking brake.”
Yes, one puts the car in park, but, it does not take the place of the parking brake.) The person at the 1-800-4KIA then finished with the usual “Kia Line” I will do a little more checking, investigating and call you back.” Considering he did not give a case number I do not expect any response.

Problem-2 The Captain Chair Seat in the middle row behind the front passenger, does not unlatch. You follow the instructions, pull on the lever, the back of the seat drops and the seat does not unlatch. (The one behind the drivers seat unlatches perfectly as do the third row seats.) Worse, some of the times, the inner latch releases but the latch closest to the sliding door does not. Of course, the seat is then not latched securely and in any accident, it would be disastrous. Needless to say, that NO-ONE rides in that seat. Once at the Dealer where we purchased the van, on a stop by the dealer since that Dealership is over an hour drive and over 100 miles round trip, he came out and while lowering the back of the seat, Pulled Hard on the back and it came loose. We have not been able to do this. The second time, they sprayed a spray oil, and by the time we arrived home, the seat was again stuck. If you unstick it and repeatedly latch it and unlatch it, it will work until you leave it alone for a while. Then, you are back to a stuck seat.
At Shawnee Mission Kia, first thing they said was “there was no sign of the track being lubed” I told him they used the spray and he said that it was wrong. That they have to use a white grease. He showed me the grease and how it would unlatch correctly. My only thought was that it was wrong. Grease everywhere on the latch means you can not put anything there without getting grease all over it but, if it worked, well we would deal with the grease later. Well, it did not work. Arriving home and showing it to the family, the seat again does not unlatch. No problem with any of the other seats, only that one…One would think that they could see that it is defective???
Well, I hope that next week when it goes in for the brakes and they check this thoroughly, that the problem could be solved once and for all.

My concern is the following. I have been driving for over 40 years and have never heard of Parking Brakes that are there just for looks. People that you trust to repair your vehicle actually do not know what they are saying or worse, doing. They are however very interested in asking you in a harsh tone “the van has 4000 miles, has the oil been changed in it yet?” The owner’s manual says to change the oil every 7,500 miles or once a year. That however, they do not follow the Owner’s manual. Why, one has to pay for the oil changes but, why would I pay for it there at Shawnee Mission Kia if, I get oil changes for free where I purchased my vehicle if, I pay for the filter. I do not take advantage of that because of the fact that it is an over 100 mile round trip to do that and time and cost does not make it worthwhile. But, the oil in the van along with the oil filter, air filter and cabin filter were changed when the van had 4,040 miles and one year.

KIA needs to get tough on this. Parking brakes that do not hold a vehicle are an accident waiting to happen. Seats that do not unlatch correctly are a danger to passengers since the seat is not held down correctly will come out during an accident. Researching on the internet, we found out that this latching problem is something that has been common to the Kia Sedona and goes quite a ways back. From what we read online, the lower part of the seat is replaced or as Chris at Shawnee Mission Kia said, replace the seat. So? Why not quickly solve the problem when it happens and in our van, it has been happening since the day of purchase. Also, researching online, parking brake issues among KIA’s are also common. I know what a parking brake is supposed to do and yet, you have employees treating you like an idiot and these employees cannot comprehend what they are reading. Why are people not trained to correct these serious problems?
