2011-03-15	FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP	HONDA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2011 HONDA CIVIC VEHICLES. TO PREVENT FUEL FROM LEAKING OUT OF A VEHICLE’S FUEL TANK INTO THE EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS CANISTER IN THE EVENT A ROLL-OVER INCIDENT OCCURS, THE FUEL PUMP MODULE IS EQUIPPED WITH A ROLL OVER VALVE (ROV). DUE TO IMPROPER ULTRASONIC WELDING OF THE PLASTIC CASE THAT HOUSES THE ROV WITHIN THE FUEL PUMP MODULE, THE CASE MATERIAL MAY BREAK OR CRACK, WHICH MAY CAUSE THE ROV TO SEPARATE FROM THE CASE AND FAIL TO FUNCTION, THEREBY INCREASING THE RISK OF FUEL LEAKAGE IN A ROLL-OVER INCIDENT. Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE FUEL PUMP MODULE AND IF NECESSARY REPLACE THE MODULE FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 25, 2011. My Honda Civic LX was purchase in April of 2011. The noise from the back tires was not as loud as it is now but was present. I had no idea this was a problem and had the car services and inspected by Autofair Honda on a reg. basis. It got louder as time passed and I noticed my original tires were wearing down on the inside prematurely around the time I brought the car in to have the noise and tires looked at in December of 2013. The service dept. at Autofair Honda told me the tires were cheap ones that they put on but were the softer ride for new customers and I would have to replace them myself. They said they found nothing else wrong with the car even though I asked to check the wheel bearings and arm controlas I saw this was a common problem with the Honda Civics. This is the response I got from their service guy Austin Rush.

I’m not sure I trust you guys with my car at this time. Your team inspected my tires in August 2012 and passed it with flying colors, no mention of the tires wearing down. I’ve been hearing this grinding sound coming from the back tires for over a year now (before the August inspection). This is the first Honda I’ve bought and since coming from a Jeep Cherokee, chalked it up to “that must be normal” for Honda. And since your team never even mentioned the tires are wearing down, nor did they suggest a tire rotation or alignment, I assumed it was normal. Only to find out from Tire Warehouse that this type of wear was not normal and could possibly be the bearings giving out or the car needed an alignment.

All your service guys would do is tell me you use cheap tires that do wear down fast just so the customer has a more comfortable ride when first buying the car, I should have had the tires rotated the first year (though it was never mentioned during the inspection in August) said nothing about an alignment nor offering one, the bearings looked tight and would I like to buy 4 new tires from you at full price???

I think you should bear the cost of my four new tires at this point since this could have been avoided if only someone in your service dept. cared about the customer more than making a quick buck off them.

You can deliver them to my home anytime as I don’t feel trusting of your service dept. any longer.

Susan,

Understood. I see in the history where you had the inspection in September. It looks like there were no signs of abnormal wear at that time and the tires were over the 2/32 requirement for an inspection sticker. According to your most recent visit that we may have an issue with the tires now that is creating the noise concern. Tires are not covered under your warranty and while there is a noise, they met minimum state inspection requirements in came in for your most recent visit. I can appeal this to Honda to try to get assistance from them to replace the tires, but I would need to confirm when the alignments/tire rotations had prior to the 1/7 repair order. If this is something that you wanted to proceed with I would need to get the information and then file the request. Please note that Honda does handle these on a case to case basis and have the final say on what assistance can be offered. If this is something you would like to proceed with please let me know.

My response back to him:

I don’t think you understand…the noise was present before my last inspection! Your tech and your service guy both said the noise was present only because of the tire wear which you just stated in your email was heard because of the most recent tire wear??? This doesn’t make sense. I have 2 witnesses to the noise being present before September’s inspection. If there was no wear on September’s inspection visit why was there noise prior to then? Something is not right here. I had the tires rotated in early October of 2012 at Tire Warehouse in Concord but they had to put the tires back the other way due to the noise being even louder when they rotated them. THIS STILL SHOULD HAVE BEEN NOTICED BY YOUR TECH DURING INSPECTION OF 2012. THE NOISE WAS PRESENT THEN AND ACCORDING TO YOUR STATEMENTS WAS CAUSED BY TIRE WEAR. OBVIOUSLY THERE WAS TIRE WEAR THEN, THERE HAD TO BE OR THERE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN THE NOISE!

If you can get Honda to make good with new free tires, great but they better do so quick because I’ve also been told they are not safe to be driving this way.

AFTER MUCH BANTER BACK AND FORTH Austin decided not to pay for the tires or fix the “noise” problem. THE NOISE IS NOW DEAFENING AT SPEEDS OVER 30 MILES PER HOUR AND I AM AFRAID TO TAKE IT TO A HONDA DEALERSHIP. HELP!
