2012-08-10	ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:COOLING SYSTEM:FAN	This recall involves aftermarket parts sold by Valeo. Valeo is recalling certain engine cooling fans, part numbers 696121, 696273, and 696275, used as service replacement parts for model year 2008-2011 BMW 1-Series, 2006-2011 BMW 3-Series, 2000-2009 BMW 5-Series, 2004-2005 BMW 6-Series, and 2006-2007 BMW 7-Series vehicles. A metal-oxide semiconductor may overheat due to insufficient screwing of the semiconductor on the aluminum heat sink. This primary failure could cause adjacent components on the fan assembly motor circuit board to overheat and short. Remedy: Valeo will notify owners and replace the fans free of charge. The safety recall began on August 22, 2012. This recall is being conducted by Valeo, not by BMW. For further information, owners may contact Valeo at 1-888-718-2536.
2010-06-10	SEAT BELTS:FRONT:RETRACTOR	BMW IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2008-2011 1-SERIES VEHICLES. IN A CRASH OF SUFFICIENT SEVERITY, DEPLOYMENT OF THE FRONT PRE-TENSIONER AND LOAD-LIMITER OCCURS. Remedy: VEHICLES PRODUCED UP THROUGH DECEMBER 2009 WILL RECEIVE NEW FRONT SAFETY BELT RETRACTOR UNITS AND A MODIFICATION TO THE SOUND INSULATION NEAR THE UNITS, WHILE VEHICLES PRODUCED BETWEEN JANUARY 2010 AND MAY 2010 WILL RECEIVE A MODIFICATION TO THE SOUND INSULATION NEAR THE UNITS. On February 23, 2014, I decided to take my BMW for a drive. After removing the car from my garage, I drove for approximately three blocks at which time I had to stop for a stop sign. When I applied my brakes to stop the vehicle, the engine went into a very high idle, causing the vehicle to travel approximately three feet, until I place the gear shift in the neutral indicator slot. A which time the engine dropped back to the normal idling mode. Knowing how unsafe and dangerous this cloud be, I drove the vehicle directly to “West German BMW” located at 500 West Pennsylvania Ave., Fort Washington, PA. and disclosed to service representative, Amie L. Graham what I had encountered with my car. She requested that I leave the vehicle so it could be checked out, because BMW deems the incident to be a serious problem. The vehicle was left for three days, in the interim, the oil was change and wiper blades were replaced on the car. As for the incident in question, I was told the car mates caused the problem. I replied, it couldn’t have been the car mates because if the car mate was stuck on the throttle the engine would have continued to run at high acceleration and it didn’t. So that dismisses the car mate theory. They gave me back my car keys and told me they could not find anything else. Note: I did not receive an invoice for the work / diagnostics the dealership performed. On March 24, 2014, received a phone call from Customer Relations person, Mrs. Betsey Holman. She is employed at, BMW of North America. (Phone # 1-800-831-1117) She stated, the vehicle in question has a safety devise built into it. Meaning when and if the vehicle jumps into a high acceleration mode, when you place the gear shift in natural, it will automatically return the engine to a safe idle. The problem I have with that is; why does the vehicle jump into a high idle on it’s own? Secondly, when the consumer purchased the vehicle this so called safety device in the vehicle is not disclosed to the consumer when they purchase the vehicle and it is not listed in the owners manual for the car. After being told this, I conducted a test of my own. After starting the vehicle up, I placed my BMW on the side street of my home. Then I placed my left foot on the brake at the same time I placed my right foot on the throttle and pressed down on the throttle until the front end of the car began to rise up. When the car was in a high idling position, I shift the gear lever into the neutral zone. The car’s engine continued to run at a high idle until I let up off the throttle. Where is / was this so called safety devise? On March 28, 2014, I placed a call to Mrs. Betsey Holman, BMW Customer Relations Dept. and disclosed my findings to her. She stated, Mr. Kelly when the service tech. did the diagnostic test he could not come up with a code. Do you want me to make another appointment for you at “West German BMW”? I replied, this is a very serious situation, I would like to have anything and everything done to correct the problem. A $42,000.00 dollar car sitting in my garage is not doing me any good. Her reply was, I must asked the customer if they want to take the car back to the dealer ship. That was the straw that broke the camels back. I told Mrs. Holman, you hear me but you are not listening to me. The object is to find out what made the vehicle flare out of control. If my spouse was driving the car at the time of the incident I think and truly believe the out come could and would have been different. The only thing that saved me from injury and injuring someone else I had defensive driving while serving as a Philadelphia Police Officer and a Criminal Investigator for the U.S. Government.
