Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE WIPER MOTOR FOR THE PRESENCE OF GREASE AND GREASE THE WIPER MOTOR GEARS IF NECESSARY. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 22, 2005. My Mountaineer began shifting harshly from 2-1 when slowing to a stop. It began as a mild abrubt shift around 3000 miles. It also seemed to hesitate and buck a little on re-acceleration between 1st and 2nd gears. I brought it to the dealer who performed some type of recalibration. This cleared the problem up temporarily. Around 8000 miles it began to do the same thing, but more harsh and abrubt shifting would occur. I was told my 6 speed transmission would learn my driving characteristics amd eventually smooth itself out. In the mean time the dealer recalibrated the transmission again. This would work for a month or two, but it came back around 14000 miles. The harsh shifting would feel like I got bumped from behind. Again I took the vehicle to the dealership who recalibrated the transmission based on information they got from a Ford representative. Once again it worked for awhile and went back to shifting harshly around 18000 miles. I took it in again and the dealership service manager drove my car and it did what I had described to him. The problem is the transmission does not do this all the the time. One day it will shift smoothly and the next it will shift harshly several times. Eventually I was shown a bulletin by the dealership that came from Ford that instructed the dealer to MAKE NO REPAIR to this problem until a new recalibration came in mid November of 2007. In the mean time I had enough of this problem that I was told was occurring to several people who owned 2006 and newer Mountaineers and Explorers. I called Ford and they denied any replacement for my vehicle and offered an extended warranty. I took this matter to the Better Business Bureau. I had an arbitration hearing, but was told I needed to allow Ford another chance to fix the problem. Ford claimed that the vehicle was working as designed, but that the transmission would shift harshly based on how I drove it. If a driver made rolling stops or did double footed driving, the transmission would act this way. I can’t believe they would make such a statement. This means all vehicles they sell like my own will do the same thing as mine based on how WE drive. I know more vehicles like mine are experiencing the same problem and are frustrated with Ford for not doing anything about it. They refuse to accept that they have a design flaw in their new 6 speed transmission. If a person goes to edmunds.com and search the forums, they will find others complaning about this. The dealership has been honest and telling me that Ford does not have fix and has only sent instructions not to perform any type of repairs on the transmission other than the recalibrations they send them. I took my Mountaineer to an independent mechanic who’s business has been repairing cars since the 1950’s, who diagnosed it as being abnormal and in need of some type of transmission repair. It is obvious to me that Ford does not want to acknowledge a problem because it would involve recalling all these vehicles. They claim it is working as DESIGNED! More people need to contact authorities and get Ford to recall and/or find a permanent solution.
