IF THE TOP EDGE OF THE HANDLE HAS VERY THIN CHROME PLATING THAT PORTION OF THE PLATING MAY WEAR AWAY MORE EASILY THAN MORE THICKLY PLATED AREAS AS THE DOOR HANDLE IS USED. THE WORN CHROME PLATING ON THE UPPER EDGE OF THE HANDLE MAY RESULT IN A CRACK OR SEPARATION BETWEEN THE CHROME PLATING ON THE INBOARD AND OUTBOARD SURFACES OF THE HANDLE, WHICH MAY FORM A SHARP EDGE. 2009-04-16	SUSPENSION	HYUNDAI IS RECALLING 188,282 MY 2001-2004 SONATA AND MY 2001-2004 XG300 AND XG350 VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WEST VIRGINIA, WISCONSIN, AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. ROAD SALT APPLIED IN THESE JURISDICTIONS DURING THE WINTER MONTHS MAY RESULT IN PROGRESSIVE, INTERNAL CORROSION OF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME ON THE VEHICLES, AND MAY RESULT IN THINNING OR PERFORATION OF THE SUB-FRAME STEEL. THE CORROSION IS FREQUENTLY VISIBLE AND OFTEN DISCOVERED DURING INSPECTION OR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE, AND OWNERS MAY ALSO HEAR NOISES OR NOTICE TIRE MISALIGNMENT AND STEERING PULL. IF THESE SIGNALS ARE UNDETECTED OR UNHEEDED, THE CORROSION MAY PROGRESS AND THE FORWARD MOUNTING OF THE LOWER CONTROL ARM MAY DETACH FROM THE SUB-FRAME. Remedy: DEALERS WILL MEASURE THE THICKNESS OF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME AND INSPECT THE FRONT SUB-FRAME FOR CORROSION DAMAGE AND, IF NECESSARY, THE FRONT SUB-FRAME WILL BE REPLACED WITH A NEW SUB-FRAME THAT INCORPORATES ADDITIONAL HOLES IN THE UPPER AND LOWER PANELS. IF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME DOES NOT REQUIRE REPLACEMENT, THE DEALER WILL ADD DRAINAGE HOLES TO THE SUB-FRAME AND WILL TREAT THE SUB-FRAME WITH RUST-PROOFING MATERIAL TO STOP THE CORROSION PROCESS. 2004-07-26	FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE	CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 301, “FUEL SYSTEM INTEGRITY” A VALVE ON THE FUEL TANK ASSEMBLY MAY NOT CLOSE PROPERLY. IF A VEHICLE ROLLS OVER AND THE FUEL TANK ASSEMBLY VALVE IS NOT PROPERLY CLOSED, FUEL SPILLAGE MAY OCCUR. Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL AN ADDITIONAL FUEL TANK ASSEMBLY VALVE. 2003-03-17	TIRES:TEMPORARY/EMERGENCY SPARE TIRE	ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM (TCS), IF THE T125/70D-15 COMPACT SPARE TIRE IS INSTALLED ON A FRONT WHEEL POSITION, THE TCS MAY INADVERTENTLY ACTIVATE BEGINNING AT SPEEDS OF 20 MPH. Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE SPARE TIRE WITH A NEW LARGER DIAMETER T125/80R-15 COMPACT SPARE TIRE AND A NEW TIRE PRESSURE LABEL WILL BE INSTALLED ON THE DRIVER’S DOOR TO PROVIDE INFORMATION APPLICABLE TO THE T125/80R-15 COMPACT SPARE TIRE. In Apr 04 I purchased new tires for my ’03 Hyundai Sonata. Inside of thirty days, I had the right front tire go flat while driving on a major highway. I was able to get to the shoulder to change the flat. I went back to National Tire & Battery (NTB) where I had purchased the tires. They could not find an obvious cause for the tire failure. They replaced the tire, and three days later, the tire went flat again while travelling on the highway. I expirenced two more flat tires on the same wheel within the next two weeks, and then a few days later the left front tire went flat. About a week later the right rear tire went flat. It was determined that the valve stem was being cut by the hubcap. NTB suggested that I go back to the dealership and have them investigate the situation. I went to Pohanka in Fredericksburg, VA and the service technician said that the hubcap was making contact with the tire when there should be a small gap separating the two. The suggestion from the dealership was to change the tire or replace the rim. I went back to NTB, and they conferred with BF Goodrich, the manufacturer of the tire, and they, BF Goodrich, suggested that I go back to the stock tire that was on the car. I had also filed a claim with Hyundai Consumer Affairs, and their suggestion was the same. My problem with all of this, is first, I selected a tire that was the proper size for my car (BF Goodrich Traction T/A 205/65R15). Nowhere, had it been indicated, by Hyundai or BF Goodrich, that the selected tire was not suitable for my vehicle. Secondly, my life and the life of others became endangered by this problem. Thirdly, I am being forced to make tire selection, because neither Hyundai, nor BF Goodrich have provided limiting information on the tires that will properly function with my car. This is serious and needs immediated attention by someone, before there is loss of life or serious injury to someone because Hyundai’s hubcap for the Sonata is not compatible with the tire size that it has indicated within the owner’s manual and the label on the car. I have filed a failure claim with NHTSA. I would appreciate anything your team could do to bring this situation to light and perhaps even aide in bring about a better choice for the consumers than having to purchase only the stock tire for their car.
