2002 LAND ROVER Discovery

My car starting falling apart within the first month (April/2002). It started with the rear sun-roof not working. They replaced the parts. Then both sun-roofs started squeaking. They lubricated both of them, but the problem still exists. Since then, I had to go back to fix my driver window (was stuck), replace the rear windshield wiper motor (never worked from the beginning), re-check the transmission/engine (doesn\’t start at least 8 times a week) (They said they fixed it, but the problem still exists), fix the driver window (was stuck), rear right window doesn\’t work, navigation system gives wrong directions (Causes unnecessary mileage {Lease contract}, dash glove box was installed incorrectly (According to Land Rover Service {Kept opening while driving}. Big black spot on the radio display (Unable to read navigation directions). Service can\’t fix it nor order me a new radio display (Didn\’t explain why), but did say that the manufacturer does acknowledge the problem but they won\’t replace it for whatever reason. The radio doesn\’t turn sometimes and when I switch to CD, everything shuts off. CD player displays \"Error\" when I want to change CDs or sometimes it will play the wrong cd. Sometimes while playing CDs, the sound will shut off, but cd keeps going. Front and rear interior light bulbs went out within 8 months. I was told by Anaheim Hills that my sound system is the best, WRONG. Quality is horrible. It sounds like system is going to blow up, even at base:0 and treble: 0. AC produced/produces a bad smell (Like mildew). Engine light went off within 3 months of leasing. To top it off, I spit on Land Rover customer service. I have gone through 3 Land Rover Services and all of them have horrible customer service (I can\’t help you with that, you need to contact Land Rover Corporate. I\’ve been on vacation, you need to talk to the person you initially talked to. That\’s not my problem. I\’m not the one that sold you the car. You need to go to the dealership you leased your car from. We are the just the service dept., I can\’t do that. I can\’t do that. What do you want me to do? You need to file a complaint. That\’s not my problem. There is nothing we can do. You need to come back because we don\’t have the parts. Oh, sorry it\’s been 4 months and I forgot to order the parts for you. Sorry I never called you. Sorry, sorry, sorry. They all like to argue, delegate and deny and kind of accountability nor responsibility. It\’s always somebody else\’s fault. I even left 3 rude messages for the manager of Anaheim Hills. No answer. They know how to stalk me to buy a car from them, but when I need them, they\’re not there. I spit on their customer service. I called Land Rover Customer Service/Corporate (Richard, 800-637-6837 ext. 2934) and initiated a case. He promised to call me back after his research. This was between Nov. and Dec./2002. I called him three times and asked him to call me back. He never did. I spit on his customer service and ability to keep his promises. He was suppose to research why I can\’t get a new stereo/navigation system and why I had to replace my brake pads less than a year. I felt that this was too soon. I obtained advice from several mechanics and they all said it is too soon to buy brake pads. I have to pay $550.00 for new brake pads and it hasn\’t even been a year. The Anaheim Hills Dealership should have told me that these brakes will only last 10 months. I have had other SUVs and I never had to replace my brake pads so quickly. I want them to pay for them. I have called the corporate and left messages, no answer. I would rather die than to lease or buy another Land Rover. I have gone back and forth to service and at least 13 times (That\’s 26 trips). I have lost time from work and pleasure.

After 4 whole months, just received my Freelander back. From what I\’ve been told and personally see, my 2002 engine has been replaced with a 2003. Engine required replacing after my timing belt jumped time due to dirt/debri getting inside the belt enclosure. In a 2002 Freelander, timing belt enclosure has a 1\" x 1\" whole on the underside, thus allowing small debris to enter. This sounds like a design flaw. My new engine now has a \’new special\’ plug to seal the hole. Newer (2004+) Freelander models have this plug already installed. I haven\’t heard of any service bulletins yet regarding the plug. Anyway, a little $6 plug would have saved me and insurance over $13,000 of costs for a new engine. As a note, Land Rover Chronicle even mentions that the 2006 Freelander will have better engine sealing, since they have recognized that drivers are actually using these vehicles as advertised. Furthermore, a new front axle was needed for some reason (vibration with the installation of a new engine). Hood has a small dent from someone pressing down too far. An 02 sensor was also replaced, yet I\’m still getting \’check engine\’ light now.

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 land rover discovery ii. while driving approximately 45 mph, the accelerator pedal traveled to the floorboard without warning. the vehicle accelerated to approximately 60 mph. the contact shut off the vehicle and coasted to the shoulder. the contact exited the vehicle, looked underneath, and noticed the accelerator cable was shredded and disconnected and the throttle was in the open position. the contact connected the cable back to its original position, but the vehicle did not engage in gear. the vehicle was towed home. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the transmission was damaged and needed replacement. the vehicle was at the shop being repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 180,000.

Catastrophic injuries sustained!!!! loss of life almost occurred! i was driving my land rover on a highway at 60 mph when suddenly the vehicle experienced a catastrophic failure. the brake drum fell apart while the vehicle was in motion and parts from the brake drum pierced the under carriage of the vehicle and came in through the driver seat i was sitting in and cause me major internal injuries that led to me being hospitalized for 52 days. the failure was sudden and unexpected there was no warning that this was going to happen or that there was anything was wrong with the vehicle the failure caused me to lose control of the car and i was struck by another vehicle. i have included pictures that help people better understand what happened to me. the pictures of the car parts that were removed from my abdominal area and pictures of the seat i was sitting on. i filed a law suit and it settled out of court so this is the best way i could think of to let the public know about the danger these vehicles posses. *bf

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 land rover discovery. while driving 65 mph, the rear of the vehicle vibrated violently without warning. the failure recurred each time the speed was above 65 mph. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the front shaft was replaced twice; however, the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 70,000.

Oil leak on engine, oil pan leak, water pump leak, no power on engine it lost the power from over heating, mechanic wants to replace engine i was quoted 3700 dollars. how can i know if this engine was a defect. *tr

Of all the personal vehicles i've ever owned, i've never had one that causes me to drive like i was on "pins & needles". i was driving at highway speed when out of the blue the engine head gaskets let go, without warning. the engine shut down and i lost power steering and power brakes. after investigating with dealer inquiries and independent shops this is a common problem with land rover v8 aluminum engines.the dealership(s) i spoke with actually agreed with my concerns but said "talking to land rover is like talking to a dog, they hear you but won't do a thing about it". i could understand if this vehicle was high mileage or was really abused. someone needs to address these people before someone gets killed. *tr

Unintended acceleration. three times now our landrover discovery (2002) has accelerated without intent. once pulling into our driveway nearly crashing into a person, another time from a dead stop and i had to swerve not to hit a house, and now a third time while my husband was driving slowly down a street -- all of a sudden our car accelerated and nearly hit the car in front of us. *tr

I was traveling at approximately 45 mph when my 2002 land rover discovery made a very loud grinding noise and stopped my car. i had vehicle towed and after inspection was told the drive shaft needs to be replaced. i have 55k miles and the repairs are over $1,000.00. also i just had a mechanical inspection a few months ago and was told everything was fine. *tr

Driveshaft failed and had to be replaced at 60,000 miles. fortunately, i was aware of the problem and did not proceed to drive the vehicle. this is a continuous problem that landrover continues to deny. *nm

Defective sunroof sunroof leaks into occupant compartment at windshield posts both sides which in turn runs down into electrical fuses causing ticking noises and shorts. *nm

While driving 70 mph vehicle lost control. as a result, vehicle rolled over from three to seven times . upon impact, dual air bags did not deploy. passenger sustained three spine and pelvic fractures, and needed massive surgery to the right knee. *ak

Fire originated right rear secion engine around heater hoses-one hearter hose leaked or ruptured allowing engine coolant to drip down onto hot exhaust manifold igniting the coolant cause fire

When driving in the rain windshield wipers failed, causing the driver to pull off the road. consumer contacted the dealership on three separate occasions, but problem still occurs. *ak

While driving the vehicle, the driver noticed smoke coming from under the hood. the consumer proceeded to drive the vehicle home where it caught fire. the consumer was able to put out the fire coming from the engine. the vehicle was towed to the dealership. please provide any further details. *ph

While driving the srs indicator light came on and stayed on, which indicates that the air bags may not deploy if vehicle is in an accident. consumer took vehicle to the dealership to have serviced. the dealership are replacing the harness per consumer. ts
