2001 DODGE Grand Caravan

When refueling, I slightly bumped the gas door and it broke in two. Not a real big deal, but it is made of plastic and it broke very easily. Not a great design. Have there been more complaints of this problem?Thank you

What started as a “clunk” over bumps has turned into a “grinding” around corners, stops, and bumps. Dealer has replaced Struts, bushings, steering rack, and Control Arms.Problem continues…

This had a light come and they replace a solinoid for the transmission. The light came back on aftera few miles. Dealer reset and said no problem. Took to transmission shop and was informed that the torque converter was bad. Unit was check, torque converter was failing and had caused further damage. Thus a big bill. This is on an all wheel drive Caravn is seems to be a common issue.

The main shackle that connects the axle to the frame broke loose nearly causing my wife with 3 kids in the van to lose control and crash. She stops at a Goodyear repairs shop on the side of a main road. They indicated that this shackle is never supposed to break and that they, in the experience, have never seen one break on a Caravan that was not in a crash. They indicated that this shackle connects the spring to the frame and the whole axle could have caused a fatal accident. I have not yet contacted the dealer. They would not let her leave with the car, and sent for a welder to make a temporary weld repair. This is either a manufacturing flaw or a design flaw. I have contacted another mechanic to find out that to rip this shackle off the car would have taken trememdous impact. No pot hole or bump could have done it. I do not know what to do next. The captains’ chairs do not have a sensor to indicate they’re not fully latched. The consequence of this is that the chairs can appear in place but not be, and a child riding in a car seat in a captain’s chair can swing forward at the first stop impacting the driver or passenger’s seat head first. Ideally, a parent or guardian would 100%, without fail, check both seats at every use, but one inadverterent mislatch and the child is propelled forward at the first stop (which if it’s downhill at a reasonable speed could be fatal) and impacts the hard casing on the back of the driver or passenger seat head first. In a van whose door latches, liftgate latches and even seatbelt latches are all eletronically indicated, not having the captains’ chairs linked to a weight-bearing sensor seems to be a serious, if not fatal, design flaw. My children have been hurt seriously by this several times.

THE BRAKES(FRON ROTORS/[PADS) ARE CONTINUOSLY WARPING! I HAVE 1999 DODGE CARAVAN WITH NO BRAKE PROBLEMS UNTIL 52,000 MILES. THE 2000 HAS TO HAVE ROTORS/ADS REPLACED APPROX. EVERY 15,000 MILES.I KNOW THIS IS NOT NORMAL. I HAVE ASKED DEALERS ABOUT TBS OR RECALL, ETC. I EVEN ASK FOR REDESIGN OR AFTER MARKET ROTORS OR BRAKE PADS THAT WOULD BE BETTER?

The blower fan for the front and rear systems only works in HIGH.The transmission failed hard while driving down the highway at 65mph. Slipped out of gear and got stuck.Airbag light comes on intermittently then goes off whenever it feels like it.Brakes have had to be repaired 4 times already. They wear out way too fast!!Passenger power window works when it wants. Too risky to roll it down anymore.Rear windsheild wiper quit last winter. Fixed once, now broke again.

The air conditioning compressor went out when it was only 2 1/2 years old and since it was over 36000, they refused to pay. Tthe driver\’s power window stopped and had to be replaced before it was a year old and now the passenger power window does not work. When the car was in warranty was told that the repair to the windows could only be done when they totally stopped and of course that happened once the warranty was out. There is now a squeek coming from the chasis (maybe front end) that lube is not fixing. The rear seats continue to drip rust discoloration on the gray carpet (no idea where the moisture is coming from).

In the last year we have had all of these problems. the dealership where we bought it just laughs at us. We got a lemon that took a little longer to become a lemon. We are also in need curently of a new engine. This car is falling apart. I have 2 little kids and I am just waiting for it to blow up. The brakes have had to be completely redone twice in a year. The transmission is being fixed now sinced it went out last night on the highway. Our engine knocks, or steering pump went out, our aircompressor had to be replaced, radio replaced, power window on th driver side had to be replaced because it could not roll up, our car beeps like the keys are in the igniton even when they are not, we have had to replace all 12 lifters twice. Currently our engine light is on and our mechanic says that it is an exhaust problem. We have no more funds to fix this car. We have had it.

I only have 25,000 miles on my 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan.(1) The sway bar links were repaired twice, and parts are on back order for a third repair.(2) I had to replace the front brakes after only 14,000 miles, and they are half gone already at 25,000 miles, plus the rear brakes have to be replaced.(3) The engine has a flat spot during acceleration, and I get about 11 miles per gallon in the city, and about 15-16 miles per gallon on the highway. It stated it got 18 miles per gallon in the city, and 24 miles per gallon on the highway. (4) The transmission makes a moaning sound; the power steering was leaking fluid, (5) I had to replace the battery the first summer I had it, the Anti lock brakes went out early this summer (6) The driver

I noticed that at highway speeds 50-65 mph the van would shutter violently when the brakes were applied making it very hard to stop and also causing the van to pull left or right. At lower speeds I had the same results. I notified the dealer about this problem and was told this was normal reaction of the braking system. Which I found to be quit odd since I’ve never exsprienced this type of problem before on a chrysler product. Finally with 23075 miles, I took the van in to have the front rotors changed because they where found to be (warped). Please note that I took the van to an outside vender (Brake systems of America)where they did a full inspection of the braking system,and test driving the van they found that the front rotors where warped.Also note the reason they didn’t repair the van was because they said it might void the Chrysler warranty.Is this a wide spread problem with the 2001 Chrysler and Dodge products premature warping of either the front or rear rotors or a manufacturing, quality control issue which ever the consumer is getting stuck footing the repair bill.

I bought the Van in September of 2001 and in December of 2001 i was putting front brakes on it already. Then in June of 2002, again in December of 2002, again in april of 2003, again in november of 2003, again in march of 2004, again in november of 2004 and i will need brakes as i type this again in february of 2005- that metal sound is driving my crazy…..Out of all these brakes repairs-the full system has been replaced 3 times now-full system meaning front and back along with 2 resurfacings already. 11 months later the Battery went dead while i was on vacation 900 miles from home. 2 months later while driving up the interstate, the passenger side window motor decided to stop working in the down position. (At least it wasn’t raining). 10 months later the Air conditioning metal hose on the bottom of the condesor ruptured and i was leaking freon everywhere. 7 months later the van wouldn’t go over 20 miles an hour and it turned out to be the Transmission computer brain. Ouch just sounds expensive. It sure was, for a little square box it cost 1000.00 2 months later the dash lights have started to go out 1 by 1. I have never owned a car that i had so many brake repairs done to it. Then for the recalls, i had the control arm fixed and the door latch fixed under recall. But what really sucks is that only 1 brake job and 1 battery were looked at under warranty. Everything else happened just outside warranty. The van currently has 106,907 miles on it and can’t wait to see what else is going to happen.

I bought my vehicle a little over a year ago and never thought to look for the child safety locks on the back doors because every vehicle I have had in the past has had them and it did not occur to me that mine would not have them. It is not like it as old model it is a 2001 and with all the competition with safety features you would think that it would just be automatic. Well the other day I was driving on the freeway in the pouring rain and my four year old son got out of his seatbelt and for God knows what reason maybe curiosity unlocked the side door and cracked it open. Now mind you I did not notice him getting out of his seatbelt because of the rain and the high speed traffic but thank God it was the door right behind me and I was quick enough to reach back and hold it or my son would probably of fell out and be dead right now. I cannot believe that this is not a mandatory feature in a minivan which is driven my I would guess families with children. I am so upset over this I am ready to trade in for a safer vehicle.

Driver’s side power window works sometimes and sometimes it doesn’t work.Braking at 50+ MPH cause front end shutter even after new tires and an alignment.

Coolant pipes from engine compartment leading to rear A/C-heater, rusted through. The rest of the pipe and connections are rubber/aluminum. Dealer said they had 3 similar Caravans waiting for parts. Seems to be quite common among others I have spoken with. Sounds like a flawed design.

ALSO REPLACED SWAY BAR BUSHINGS, SLIDER DOOR GASKET, SLIDER DOOR INOPERABLE, POWER STEERING (WARRANTY) cONSOLE PHONE HOLDER

1) 1st month-the tailgate latch wouldn’t open. 2) 1st year – the driver’s side window would periodically freeze and not go up. They said they couldn’t fix it until it stayed broken3) 11/06/03 At 45,000 miles the lights which flash when the remote unlocks the doors, flashed & couldn’t be turned off. The headlights would not work when this happened.4)11/09/03 The headlights turned off while driving on Interstate then flashed back on. It happened 4 times. Total darkness @ 70 mph is frightening

The air bag light goes on and off periodically. there was concern that the air bag would not deploy when needed or, conversely, it would deploy without any warning. took it to the dealer, he indicated that a spring needed to be replaced. as i was looking into recalls for this problem, i noticed that, although there was no recall, there were plenty of complaints. why is this defect allowed to coninue to give consumers problems, but there is no action from the manufacturer to fix via a recall? *nm

Air bag light is on when car is in motion. dealer said it was a "clockspring failure" and that it needed to be replaced.

While driving at any speed air bag light stayed on. dealer examined the vehicle, and found that the clockspring was defective. clockspring was replaced four times. also, dashboard lights and headlights came and off whenever they wanted to.*ak

Clock spring failure. airbag light constantly going off and on. contacted manufacturer-stated that no recall on my vehicle, but there were some recalls for that year and model, but mine was not manufactured during that time frame. My dodge grand caravan 2001 was involved in a front end collision in october of 2015. i t-boned another car that pulled out in front of me. i was going 35-40 miles per hour. the seat belt failed to tighten around my hips. because of this failure i sustained extensive damages to my right leg. this included a displaced fracture, numerous other fractures, a crushed injury to the tibia plateau. i had 5 months in rehab, 3 surgeries, extensive physical therapy. i am still receiving medical treatment a year later. if the seatbelt had done what it . was designed to do, my leg would not of hit the dash board. these injuries were caused by a seatbelt failure of my dodge grand caravan.. extensive records are available.

Clock spring. horn, cruise control stop working. airbag light on. chrysler will not acknowledge, as well as local dealer as a problem and/or a safety nor a recall issue.

The car instrument gauges became erratic along with the instrument lights. the care jerked as though it lost its electrical power to the ignition but returned to normal and then quit in front of traffic. we could have been killed by a semi-truck. i got the car over and re-started it and it ran fine until later it started to die out again after starting to run. i had to accelerate the engine to get the car moving but the car jerked and went dead again. the car will start and run fine at times and shift well at times and then starts to repeat the same problems over and over. i only know that this situation could have gotten someone killed and i do not want it to be my children or wife or me. i only have one way to go now and have no way to have it looked at because i have been told a thousand things it could be and cannot afford non-sense like this. this 2001 van runs at times like a brand new one and shifts out like brand new and then all of sudden the gauges go crazy, it lurches at stopping, go dead when i slow down at times and sometimes it seems like it is in overdrive and jerks like mad, then runs fine again. it is a repeat and it is dangerous.

Sometimes when the vehicle is started only the driver side daytime running light comes on. turn the lights on and the driver side light goes out and the other side comes on. turn on the high beams, the driver side light comes on and the other side goes out. took the vehicle to a dealer,cause was said to be the multi function switch shorted. the multi function switch was replaced, lights worked properly for about 2 weeks,then the problem returned. took vehicle back to the same dealer and was told they could not duplicate the problem.when both lights are on at the same time they flicker,the problem has gotten to the point to where only one light is working more times than when both lights are working. i researched the problem on the internet and found several other owners having the same problem as early as 2005. i contacted dodge and was told they were unaware of the problem and that there were no recalls on my vehicle. all 2001 dodge grand caravan should be recalled at once, because of this safety issue with the lights. it should not take someone having an accident whether minor or fatal in order to get this defect corrected.we are at risk of receiving a traffic ticket for driving a vehicle with defective equipment and or being in an accident because of the lighting problem. we have lost use of this for up to 3 weeks because of the problem with the head lights,and we can not afford to replace it at this time. even if we replace this vehicle the problem would only be passed on to someone else. all 2001 dodge grand caravans need to be recalled at once. *tr

Purchased used minivan took it to get registered and found out the mileage has been tampered with and its not accurate. seller said it had 90000 miles odometer read a little over 90000 but mvd said it was not accurate. *tr

Using either turn signal cuts off power to the dash. dash comes back on a few seconds after using. i check the lights (exterior), but no blinking the interior turn signals blink sometimes, but no sound anybody familiar with problem? i've seen many similar conditions. *tr

Fuel jumper hose popped off from steel line that comes from fuel tank supply the side that keeps coming off, is connect to the fuel jumper hose fitting to the fuel rail v-6 3.3l engine. *tr

Sitting idle at a stop light and my van stalled. while i tried to start it again, it began to accelerate on its own. it will stall while driving and lose all power and the steering/ brakes get hard. it will begin to accelerate on its own while the brake is pushed. i had it diagnosed yesterday and it is a melted wiring fuel rail harness that was placed right above the exhaust manifold. it can melt and catch fire. this is a known problem with this year and model. please help! *tr

The first year i purchased the vehicle, i had to take it in for fuel issues ,paid out $50 the first time for deductible, then the second year $150 same problem, fuel, had to have a new fuel pump,now i have having more fuel problems which means i will have to pay out $250 being this is my third year. now i was reading online that there have been some recalls for this same problem on dodge caravans. i would like to know if there is anything i can do, to have y problem looked at and fixed without coming out of my pocket a 3rd time for the same issue. when i purchased the veh from drive time, they stated they did an all around inspection. also, my passenger side sliding door will open on its own even while i am driving sometimes. and it wont latch on until the 3rd or 4th try. *tr

My van is overheating. it broke down on the massachusetts pike, it then started smoking from under the hood and from the undercarriage. the fans aren't turning on when the air conditioner is on, and the air conditioner is not staying cool. *tr

In april of 2009 i noticed that the steering was tight at times. i checked the power steering fluid and when added, the steering was better. in cold months it was worst. in dec. 2009 i had the power steering pump replaced. it worked for about a year. then in dec. 2010, i had the power steering pump flush. the mechanic said to warm up the car before driving. it worked in the summer months but not in the winter. in january 2012 the steering was really hard. i had a hard time backing up, turning either way or just driving at all. i got two different mechanics opinion and they said that the rack and pinion, steering rack, needed to be replaced. so, after changing the reservoir the rack and pinion still needed to be changed. the mechanic said they have changed a lot of rack and pinion in dodge/chrysler mini vans. they are not lasting the life of the vehicle.

Own a 2001 dodge grand caravan. passenger side airbag deployed immediatley after van placed in park and ignition turned off. one month later, driver's side airbag also deployed immediately after being placed in park and ignition turned off. no previous warning lights or indicators.

Air bag light comes on intermittently. this has been going on for at least three years. i took it to my mechanic who said there was a recall on my model but only up to year 2000(figures). mechanic replaced "clockspring" but problem persists. mechanic said if light on during an impact, air bags will not deploy. i suppose someone must die or file suit before anything is done for all of us 2001 caravan owners. a recall to fix this should definitely be considered / instituted! *tr

Brake line burst. after just getting off the highway, stopping at stop sign and felt something change. pulled into a parking lot, had to press pedal all the way down to stop. brake fluid pouring out of rear left side. had to have it towed. scary to think if it had gone on highway, esp. since i had my 4 yr. old with me. replaced w/ dealer part. mechanic stated that the 3 other sections have a coating to prevent corrosion but the 4th doesn't, that's how it comes. so this new part is subject to fail again? this is a serious safety issue. how common is this repair? is there a design flaw that could be remedied before someone dies? *tr

The front of the vehicle started shimmying and the steering wheel. at first, it started at about 55 mph. now it is doing it at lower and lower speeds. there are pages and pages of complaints with the same issue. it is also very hard to turn the steering wheel when going slow. there is a safety recall for the front suspension and lower control arm. campaign no 01v152000 but the local dealership said my vin number was not included. how can you continue to let them sell defective vehicles and not make them recall all affected vehicles? they said the same thing about my ram truck. there's a recall on it and they said my vehicle was not in the recall, but it has the same issue with the steering column and the air and heat going out. i wish i had read the number of complaints against them on your site and on all the other sites before i bought these lemons. you should also check out http://www.daimlerchryslervehicleproblems.com/ that is just one of the websites detailing the number of deaths caused by dodge. i am going to make a complaint against them to the justice department also. maybe if they investigate, you will finally do something about all these problems. *tr

I have had an ongoing problem with my steering since late march inmy2001 dodge grand caravan sport minivan. when in reverse it is difficult to turn the wheel,when in drive on occasion it is difficult. i took the van to a local dodge service center and was told there is a problem with the power steering pump. it isnt putting out enough pressure,the fluid is contaminated and everything needs to be replaced. i called my extended warranty provider and they will not cover the costs due to the contamination in the lines. they said that is what caused the failure and dodge minivans from several years have had a recall due to this problem. but my year has not had a recall. i call the service dept where my vehicle is and they say the same thing once again...there is contamination in the line it could be pieces of faulty hoses but they dont really know what it is. there had been recalls on other vehicles for this reason, dodge minivans are known to have power steering issues but my specific vehicle has not had a recall. they ran the vin to see if anything was l isted in recalls. i called chrysler customer service as i was directed to do to see if they can do anything to help. they took my name,info,etc and once again ran the vehicle vin and said at this time they are choosing not to help with the repairs on this vehicle even though they know there have been recalls on other years with the same problems/symptoms i am having. they documented in the computer and stated should there be a recall they will contact me for possible reimbursement have a nice day. i was still angry and called back asking to talk to a supervisor and after 15 min of arguing with a customer service repover what she was reading about my case and with her telling me they do have the right to make this decision about no repairs with no supervisor stepping in she agreed to look to see if a supervisor was available. i never spoke to anyone.

The front tire on the van started losing air. i checked to see where the leak was and found two cracks in the wheel that were leaking. there is no sign of impact on the wheel and the cracks are not parallel to the bead. the cracks run 90 degrees from the wheel bead. these are the 17 inch chrome wheels. no damage caused but i will have to replace the wheel at a quoted cost of $625.00. i have not checked the other wheels yet.*jb

Since 8/25/04 30153 miles i have had light switch problems. first it was the interior lights that would turn on and off all the time. dealer said switch was working normal.(it was like an old radio volume switch that made noise, if you kept moving the switch it would bet better for a while and then start up again)then 2/14/06 41931 miles my headlights started to flicker when i had the lights on (the headlight and dimmer are all in one unit) and the dealer did tsb 08-005-04 (which doesn't even apply to my vehicle) and charged me $41.50. finally on 9/7/06 46022 miles it started again and i drove right down so the dealer could actually see it while it happened and they did witness the problem and made an appointment. of course the tech. that witnessed it was on vacation when it went in for the appt. and they couldn't duplicate the problem again, after speaking with the dealership they replaced the switch and charged me $100 for my deductible which should have been covered under my regular warranty if they fixed it right in the first place back in 2004 or even in 2006 the 2nd time it was in and also paid the $100 for other warranty work. *nm

Front end was making clunking noises since about 24,000 miles,each time i went to the dealer since then it was brought up, but nothing found by them. finally at 44,070 they looked once again and (now that my warranty was over) they found that my front sway bar links and bushings were bad and replaced. chrysler did goodwill the repair under extended warranty but i still had to pay $100 for the deductible (which should have been covered under my previous warranty work when i paid the $100 and they didn't do the work until i called chrysler after i already left and had to go back). i do think it was way too soon to have front end sway bar problems. *nm

I noticed a puddle of antifreeze under my 2001 dodge grand caravan. i took it into my local repair shop to be diagnosed and they said that it was a rear cooling/heating system pipe that had rusted and was causing my antifreeze to leak out and not properly circulate in my vehicle. i was told that dodge had a recall so i consulted my local dealer who informed me that the recall was for 2004-2005 model years that are having the same problem but not for my vehicle. i was told i would have to pay for my vehicles problem even though it was the same exact one that was on recall for the newer vehicles. i took my vehicle back to my local repair shop while having to fill the radiator with a gardenhose every time i took it out because the engine was overheating due to this problem. they replaced my rusted steel pipe with the newer designed aluminum pipe that dodge is now using in the vehicles. this cost $300 to replace. *nm

Well my van all of a sudden decides , no reverse, and then limp mode, and engine light on. cant get past 30 miles hr, my vehicle un safe to drive, so i guess transmission or transmission control modular going bad or power train module. the 2 dealers i went to the first didn't scan for code they just said you need a new tranny, b/c of no reverse then open day my reverse came back and no limp mode, so that even made me wonder i need a tranny but now it works, except it start to like maybe shudder, not sure. well the other dealer charge me 80.00 came back and said they didn't know they would try change filter and update software, and i seen the codes 1790-1791- and i said i just cant you just reprogram it to see if it works and they gave me the run around and said no there no update that can be done or no bullentins for my vehicle and i said yes there is i read on the computer and they go we don't have them. so i see a lot of the tcm and pcm going bad and they wont take care of the problem and if it is a transmission issue then how can one go bad if you have it service right. so i decided not to fix it b/c i no they lying and they didn't want to fix it or take care of it b/c all they offer was and filter change and then at the end the guy goes oh i wouldn't want to put money in that and it don't work, why don't you just but a tranny. this is sad you cant find no one honest to tell someone what wrong with the van but want to say this and that and no properly diag or do and only give you partial the truth, why would you say to a customer that it might fix it we can re program it after the fluid change at 350.00 and instead of reprogram to see and then say they cant sound like a dishonest person, also if they diag then they should know what the problem is, so they decide to take me a ride. i lost 80.00 but not 350.00. *nm

Rear windshield wiper failed. cannot see out of the rear window of my vehicle when driving in the rain, or when salt builds up during the winter. the wiper blade is stuck in the middle of the window, obstructing my view. *jb

I had a single headlight fail on my dodge grand caravan. it was sunday, and i had a long drive home. i had the intent of replacing the bulb the next day. as i neared my home, it became dusk. i turned on my one working headlight. as it got darker, i noticed that my working headlight was flashing on and off steadily. i tried turning the switch on and off, but the problem remained. in fact, the headlight would not turn off at all! i was in a remote area, and drove the about 30 minutes home with one headlight flashing on and off. i got home, turned off the headlight and the ignition. the headlight kept flashing on and off! the only way i got it to stop was to disconnect the battery. the next day, i bought 2 new headlamps and replaced them, which seemed to resolve the problem. a vehicle should be able to operate on a single headlight for a short period of time. this was a very unsafe situation. *jb

We were on our way from florida to pennsylvania when we were told that one of our headlights were out. we purchased new bulbs and replaced them, then after further investigation realized that when the daylights were on, one light was on and one off, when we turned on the headlights the opposite light came on and the one that was on for daylights went out, then when the high beams were turned on the light that worked switched sides again. the new bulbs did not fix it, so we had to continue to drive home with one light, once in awhile both lights would come on for a few minutes. when we arrived home we took it to the dodge dealer and found out that the control module needed replaced. the worst part was that the control module had been replaced 14 months prior because of a similar problem (worse, the whole dashboard went out and the wipers didn't work along with the headlights!)! they could not find a cause to why the control module went again. i'm hoping it doesn't happen again in another 14 months (there is only a 12 month warranty on the part)! *jb

On april 22, 2006, my 2001 dodge grand caravan was en route from wilmington, nc to warren, mi. the vehicle was being operated with the low beam headlights and also the fog lamps both in operation. without warning or any operator error, all frontal lighting was turned off. both the low beams and fog lamps failed to operate. normally, this would not be so much of a concern, but i happened to be traveling at 70 mph on a very dark location of the interstate. i quickly (within 2 seconds) cycled the headlamp switch from the full on position to the full off position and back again to the full on position. the low beam and fog lamp failure remained. during the cycling of the switch, i noticed there was a flash of light in the secondary position (parking lamp only position). i immediately returned the switch to this secondary position and pulled out the switch to enable the fog lamps (the fog lamps are operated by extending the switch towards the driver and are reset to the off position when the switch is rotated to the off position). the parking and fog lamps did operate correctly in this position. i then navigated the vehicle safely to a lower speed and out of the way of any other surrounding vehicles. in the right lane at a slower speed, i once again tried to toggle the switch to the low beam position. again, all lighting failed to operate in the full on position. i then switched back to the parking (and fog) position. i tested the hi-lo beam switch. the flash to pass feature worked and the high-beam lights were briefly turned on when the turn signal lever was pulled back. once again i toggled the light switch to see if the low or high beams would work in the full on position. there was no response from the headlamps, but the turn signal lever did cause the high beam lamps to flash on when it was held back. the headlamps returned to normal operation after the vehicle was turned off and restarted. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated there was fluid leaking under the front passenger side of the vehicle. an independent repair shop determined the tubing from the radiator to the rear heater had rotted through. the dealership was alerted.

This complaint is in regards to the power windows on my 2001 dodge grand caravan sport. in early 2005, my power window on the driver's side would periodically go down and not go back up until you waited for 5-10 minutes. after time went by with this continuing to do this, i took it to the dodge dealership on william flynn highway in gibsonia, pa. they told me that they hooked it up to the computer and there was no documented cases in the chip that this was happening and since it was working, i would basically have to wait until it totally did not work until i could get it fixed. they charged me a $35 +tax diagnostic fee and nothing was don. now, on 3/1/06, it is happening more frequently, but it is not staying down completely. since they blew me off the 1st time and this is the closest dodge dealer to my work, i am afraid they will do the same and charge me to do nothing. i feel that this dealership discriminated against me because i am a woman and "i don't know what i'm talking about". please respond to me if there has been other complaints about this dealership. i had another experience regarding a rough "grinding" sound when my vehicle started. i took it up and asked them to listen to it. they said, "oh, that always happens when it is cold out." i was not charged a fee, but the sound is still happening and 2 experience mechanics, who live totally different parts of pa, who don't even know each other, told me the same thing from the sound. that it was the alternator sticking. i am still experiencing this "noise" every time my engine is cold and i start the van to warm up. once it is running, you stop and start again, the sound is not there. i do not have an accurate date of incidents. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated while stopped at a red light with the brake pedal depressed, the vehicle suddenly accelerated and crashed. the vehicle impacted the rear of another vehicle. the contact's vehicle only received minor damage to the front bumper. the police were not contacted and no injuries reported. the vehicle was driven away from the scene; however the vehicle has not been inspected and no repairs made.

I have had two flat tires on my mini van in the last two months. the van is 4.5 years old and i replaced the tires with the manufactures recommended tires a little over a year ago. in both of the cases my tires had rim leaks which i have now discovered occur on many chrysler/dodge vehicles. these leaks are a result of corrosion on the rim (and in this last case my rim was cracked) this defect in the rim design is serious as it leads to under inflated tires which the driver may be unaware of. because the leakage is slow in nature and there is no warning in the handbook that rims need to be replaced/inspected regularly there may be little or no warning. many of these vehicles are mini vans and carry many children to and from places. when i brought this to chryslers attention they told me it was not a manufacturers defect. i believe that it is. they offered no assistance with the issue other than to sell me a new set of rims for over $2000. this vehicle is less than 5 years old and should not need new rims...and more importantly there are thousand/millions of these vehicles on the roads that may have corroding rims and under inflated tires. can you help? given what we learned in the ford explorer investigation i believe it would be wise to take a look at this. *nm

Went to dealer to have the brakes fixed and mechanic told me there was a problem with the lower control arm pivot bolt, and if i didn't have it fixed i could lose control of the vehicle. he said it was a major safety issue. this affected the entire engine cradle. i was told there was a recall for this on the 2001 model. but this vehicle was not included in the recall due to vin. after contacting daimer chrysler told me the same thing ,and said there was nothing they would do about it and suggested i should hold on to my receipt because one never knows when there may be a recall in the future? they referred me to jonathan sanders, senior staff of global relations and he said there is nothing daimer chrysler would do because my vehicle wasn't in the recall even though my vehicle is a 2001 and is experiencing the same problem as the other vehicles that were recalled. i of course am having the mechanic fix the vehicle for obvious safety reasons.*ak

1) events leading up to failure: each time this has occurred after or during a summer vacation trip that included 700+ miles. use of the ac usually continues on low fan speeds (1 or 2). 2) failure and consequences: first failure would be the power windows would begin not to work. second a relay fuse would go bad. then the switch that controls the fan speeds would short out only allowing for high fan speed only. 3)have not be able to fix the switches due to dealer charging high rates just to look for the electrical failure with no guarantee they would be able to find the fault and still wanting $70+/hour before any repair work is started. we have owned a 1996 caravan and 2001 gr caravan and this problem has happened on both vehicles. *jb

Dt: the contact stated the air bag light has been illuminating intermittently since 2003. the contact noticed the light illuminates once the vehicle has heated up. the vehicle was taken to the dealership on july 1, 2003 but they were unable to duplicate the problem therefore no repairs were made. on december 27, 2004 the vehicle was taken back to the dealership while the light was illuminated. the dealership replaced a failed clock spring but the repair was unsuccessful.

The air bag light goes on and off periodically. there was concern that the air bag would not deploy when needed or, conversely, it would deploy without any warning. took it to the dealer, he indicated that a spring needed to be replaced. as i was looking into recalls for this problem, i noticed that, although there was no recall, there were plenty of complaints. why is this defect allowed to coninue to give consumers problems, but there is no action from the manufacturer to fix via a recall? *nm

I purchased a 2001 dodge grand caravan in august of 2005 with 73k miles. vehicle smelled musty (stagnant water). three trips to shop to diagnose and fix sway bar link, bushing, strut and strut mount problem to cure a clunking sound on front end. transmission slips out of gear to neutral at whim. also, shifts through first 3 gears (automatic) at whim causing vehicle to lurch. however, shop cannot duplicate these problems or the problem with my non working cruise control. at this point, i have spent a lot of money for non-diagnosis. the dealership charges everytime for not being able to find the problem. they say it is fine. i tell them that it is not fine that they just can't find it. i am disturbed by the number of posts re: to sway bar problems and transmission problems and the fact that no one is holding chrysler/dodge accountable. will it take a number of deaths to determine that this is a real safety issue? i implore you to investigate these problems along with the water issue. so far it caused my blower resistor to short out and need replacing. i had no heat in below zero weather. *jb

Radio malfunctioning intermittently over approximately one month eventually leading up to complete failure. smelled smoke. heard of recall on radio. spoke with dealership. dealership said my vehicle is not involved with recall announcement. dealer checked and found no problems related to recall. subsequent electrically-related failures in recent months involving headlights, fuel gauge light, windshield wiper light, washer fluid pump, dead battery. *jb

Dt: contact states there was a failure on the sidewall of the tire that caused complete loss of tire pressure. the tire was a goodyear integrity. he had the tire replaced with the exact brand of tire. during the same month, another tire experienced the same problem. the replacement again, was the same brand of tire. the tire dealer said the failures were not due to a defect in the tires. after approximately 7 months one of the new tires started experiencing the same problem. *nm

Dt: the contact stated the headlights flickered on and off while on low beams. he was unsure whether it would happen with the high beams on. the vehicle was taken to the dealership, and they replaced the multifunction switch. this did not correct the problem. the vehicle is currently at the dealership for repairs. *ak

Last wednesday morning on my way to work about 4am, while passing a semi on the freeway, my headlights went out for about 4-5 seconds. they came back on and have operated without a problem since. i purchased the minvan new, (ordered it), and it has given me troublefree miles since it's inception on the roads in michigan, as expected by a daimlerchrysler minivan. there was a cause for concern on this single issue only, and as i did call the dealer about it, it was simply suggested that i get it in for them to look at it. what good is that when it has occured only once...............so far. just wanted it on the record without getting "tossed or sidelined". thank you kindly.

Engine hesitates and sputters badly when placed into gear with brake on and sputters badly when accelerating from a stop. this problem happens mostly when the air conditioning is on. it has been in the shop twice for this problem. built up carbon was cleaned from the intake, but the problem persists. also, the fan speed switch was replaced because it only worked on high. it has failed again with the same problem. *jb

The check engine light came on. i had it checked and was told that it is a computer failure. (pcm has failure.) the van only has 59,000 miles on it. the dodge dealership says pcm is not covered under warranty and there is a $900 charge for replacement. the van has been serviced regularly and i feel that something this essential and expensive should not go out on a van this age with this mileage. *nm

Dt: the problem first started with the driver's side window in april 2005. the window started moving slower and then it locked. the contact took vehicle to the dealership on april 18, 2005, and they replaced the window motor regulator. then, the passenger's side window did the same thing over a period of time. on october 7, 2005 it locked in a lower position. the contact was taking vehicle to the dealership. *ak

Headlight malfunction. 1 daytime running light comes on. when i turn on headlights, the one that is on during daytime running light operation turns off, and other light turns on. when i switch lights into high beam mode, the lights reverse to the way they operate while in daytime running light operation. i've already invested $200 into the diagnosis of this problem. the repair shop replaced the light switch and turn signal switch which did not correct issue. shop spent two days checking all connections, leads and ground and they can not diagnose the cause of the problem. *jb

I currently own a 2001 dodge grand caravan-sport edition. the vehicle had an airbag clock spring replaced when the vehicle had about 25,000 miles. today the vehicle has 48,600 miles on it. the airbag light has come on once again just like the first time the clock spring failed. when the vehicle is in warm weather the light goes off. this has happened several times in the last few weeks. i have contacted the dealer that repaired it, i have been told that there is no current recall for this problem. i have been able to find a recall for model years 1998-2000 that describes the same issue with the clock spring. i feel that the problem was not corrected for this model year as well. can you please investigate this similar problem? *nm

Two incidents: in feb 05, daylight driving approximately 4 minutes @45 mph during rainfall, all the dash information lights came on and wipers would not turn on. pulling off the road to assess the situation with the van still running all the dash lights suddenly went out. i continued to drive and 1 minute later all dash lights came on again. afraid to go on, pulled into a parking lot, placed van in park and dash lights would not go out. turned off engine, tried to restart car. first few turns of key, nothing happened and then the car finally turned over without any dash lights. driving home in rain, turned on headlights/wipers and moments later all dash lights again came on. at that same time, the headlights went out/windshield wipers stopped uncommanded. made it home/turned off engine. several attempts to restart engine failed, no dash information lights during start sequence, had to have van towed to dodge dealer. the dealer discovered main computer was fried. after many hours/days of trouble shooting, we were told the wiring harness to computer was chaffed causing the problem with the computer. dealership repaired the wiring harness and replaced the computer with a rebuilt one. in early august 05 while driving in darkness, the dash lights/headlights started to cycle on and off uncontrolled, all gauges went to zero and all squares around the transmission status lights (p,r,n,d,l) would all light up. the fan would all of a sudden turn on uncommanded and not go off until the car was turned off. took van under own power to dealer. determined wiring harness bad. took about 3 weeks for harness to arrive (9/23/05). expect work to be completed by 30 september????? *nm

In february 2004, while driving my 2001 dodge grand caravan on the interstate in knoxville, tn when the transmission went out with no warning. at that time, we had just over 34,000 miles on the van. these were normal miles with no heavy towing or other abusive driving. the van was towed to jim cogdill dodge for repair. this repair was still covered under our warranty. we were told at the time of the repair that it only required the transmission be Â??refurbishedÂ?? as the warranty did not require them to replace the transmission. the transmission failed again at just over 60k miles. this time there was a loud pop, a hard jerk of the van and then it came to a sudden stop as i was crossing oncoming traffic to pull into a parking lot. i am very lucky this did not happen on the interstate as myself, and others, would surely have been endangered by this product failure. i asked to speak immediately to the service manager, mr. larry daughtry. he proceeded to inform me that even though the transmission was fixed previously by a dodge dealer, i would be fully responsible for the repairs . he also informed me he has never seen such damage in a transmission that it was obviously a product defect. i could understand their unwillingness to accept responsibility if the service had been performed by someone other than a dodge dealer, but this was not the case! he then offered to contact the district manager, whose name and contact information seems to be held in the utmost secrecy as he will only accept calls from the dealer, but he may be willing to provide some assistance. upon calling for a status. i was informed that the transmission would have to be replaced in its entirety at a cost of almost $3000.00! the district manager did offer to take care of 50% off the total cost. we have continued to argue this with the dealer and their corporate office. they gave us a continuous run around of calling one only to be told we have to speak with the other. *jb

Dt: the consumer observed deep impressions on the tread of tire located on the front drivers side. the tire deflated becasue of a nail. the consumer took the vehicle to a dealer to buy a new tire. goodyear did allow a $30 adjustment for the defect. this occurred when the tire had 25000-30,000 miles on it. the second incident occurred on the passenger front tire. the consumer's wife was driving on a paved highway road in rainy conditions when she began to experience steering difficulties and a shimmy in the steering column. the consumer inspected the vehicle and noted there was a large bulge on the sidewall of the tire. the vehicle was not driven after this was noticed. overnight the tire went flat. there was 30-35,000 miles on the tire at time of failure. the consumer took the tire off the vehicle and took the tire to dealer. dealer did not have another tire to replace with so the vehicle is currently awaiting a spare. consumer had to await for a tire for the first failure as well. goodyear, eagle, size 215/65r16. eagle ls. these tires were purchased through the dealership from where the vehicle was purchased. *ak *jb

Over the last 4 months (march 05 - july 05), my 2001 dodge grand caravan has experienced intermittant headlamp failure. this happens when the vehicle is in motion. the lights flicker off/on for several cycles. this does not seem to be related to weather or engine rpm. to date, the lights have eventually stayed on and this has not yet made the vehicle unoperable. dealer does not have any idea what the problem could be and will just start trying things....am planning to take this to dealer within the next month. i have filed a complaint with daimlerchrysler. the date listed below is the most recent occurance...but this has been a problem for several months.

Michelin mx4 tires on 2001 dodge grand caravan sport, vehicle has only 31,840 miles on it and tires thread are worn severely and metal from radial is exposed. i already had to replace 1 tires because of side thread worn, this now makes 3 (1st tire replaced under 25,000 miles. this is a real safety issue for our family vehicle and action should be taken. *jb

When driving the vehicle with the headlights on, they will, for no apparent reason, shut off. happens regardless of speed i am driving or road conditions. these outtages are intermittant and there is no pattern to when they will occur. losing headlights at night on dark country roads in my area is a serious safety hazard. took vehicle to dealer who said there was a "fatal error" showing on a computer module. spent $600 to replace computer module and the problem still recurred. vehicle is now at dealer waiting for a backordered headlight switch. dealer has no idea when the switch will come in. they ordered the same switch for another vehicle 2 months ago and it still has not come in. *ak

Vehicle experienced a problem with the rear brake drums. snow and water entered the rear brake drums, causing rust to develop, leading to a temporary freeze of the rear brake lining to the drum which locked up the rear wheel, preventing it from turning. owner contacted the manufacturer , who informed the owner that this problem was not under warranty, and there was nothing they could do. *ak

The brake had wore out every 20,000 miles, even when fix wear out again and again. *bf the dealer replaced pad/shoes and the consumer detected noise coming from the braking system. *sc the consumer discovered there was a major problem with the rotors. *jb

While the vehicle was in a tire repair shop for a front end alignment. mechanic informed the consumer that both front tie rods needed to be replaced. dealer and the manufacturer were notified.*ak

(1) normal usage (2) the passenger sliding door does not latch and remains open. even after closing by hand. a side effect is that it does not open when the close button is pressed. (3) to fix right now - i have to stop the van, get out, and close a couple of times by hand. each time you have to check to make sure it stays closed. now i am paying $320 to have the dealer put in a new latch and electronic switch. the dealer, jolly john, had two of these same failures today! a sevice desk person mentioned he had a similar failure. seems like a common problem. this is not a cold problem, as our van is in a heated garage and it occurs anytime since october.

At about 32,000 miles i had taken my van in for an oil change and asked the dodge dealer to look at the transmission. it had been shifting rough occasionally, and they looked at it, and said it was fine. last week i was driving down the 10 freeway at about 70 mph when the transmission seized for about 2-3 seconds, the van's front wheels locked up, and the van slid sideways, then the transmission broke loose, and i was able to regain control and get the van to the slow lane and proceed to exit. i then had the van towed to dodge were they seemed surprised that the transmission failed. and now i read about on the internet that its notrious for this. i had a co worker with me and we were both physically shaken. i believe this is a major deffect in the vehicle and should be investigated! please help do something. *ak

During normal driving the transmission torque converter failed which tehn resulted in a transmission pump failure. vehicle became undriveable. transmission required total build. vehicle had only 56k miles and was never used to tow anything. per dealer, chrysler denied any responsibility and refused to offer financial assistance.*ak

Consumer stated that the steel tube that runs to the water pump rusted, causing the vehicle to overheat, eventually losing fluids. vehicle finally shut down. *ak

A metal hose underneath the van rusted through and exploded. this resulted in all the coolant leaking out. this caused the van to immediately overheat and stall while driving. the dealership peformed a diagnostic test and discovered the hose needs to be replaced. *jb *sc

The vehicle overheated while driving, due to lost of coolant. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the dealer found two metal lines, one line was leading to the a/c and the other line to the heater. both were corroded through. *jb

While driving and steering a loud knocking noise was heard coming from the front. recall 01v152000 was on the internet. consumer experienced the same problem. consumer drove vehicle to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the steering wheel shaft needed to be replaced. this recall notice was not for this vehicle. *ak

While driving 30 mph consumer heard a loud noise coming from the rear and the vehicle jerked. vehicle was taken to a body shop for inspection, and mechanic determined that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced.*ak *tt *sb

When hitting a bump at any speed, the air bag light illuminated. the dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. *ak *sc

1. no events or lights leading up to the crash. ( lights, error message for air bag, etc. ) 2. side impact airbag - did not go off. i was in a side impact car crash at sliding passenger door on our dodge grand caravan. 3. over $6,000.00 worth of work done on vehicle. nothing was done to coorect or even look into why the airbag didn't go off. got run around from the dealership, chrysler corporate office also the auto body shop that fixed our vehicle. i was referred to the auto shop by my "reputable" car insurance company state farm.*ak

My wife was driving normally less than .2 miles from the house. the speed limit is 40 mph. the roads were dry. my wife heard and "explosion" and pulled off the road believing that she had a blow out. the car stalled. not knowing what the problem was, all the tires were inflated, she returned home. by the time she returned to the house there was no transmission fluid in the vehicle. i had it towed to a repair shop (buddies automotive 410-679-6300) the repair shop indicated that the pin that dodge uses in the differential is undersized and hollow, and that it had sheared off sending parts through the casing of the transmission. the transmission is being replaced. the replacement is built by a company who has performed studies on the transmission and has modified this section of the transmission to make them safe and reliable. if you have any further questions, please feel free to call me. the vehicle is a 2001 grand caravan ex, with a 3.3l engine and a 4 speed automatic. *jb

Equipment failure - 50,000 miles - all coolant steel piping in vehicle rusting from the inside out. stainless lines from rear heater ok but all other lines rusting. blisters on piping and lines under passenger seat rusted through and leaking. had to replace all steel lines with rubber hose. steel lines not replaceable without removal of engine. *jb

Problem is passenger side power door. power works, but does not release from motor when you use it manually. dealer says out of warranty, repair cost $300-$350. ((38,000 miles). when door closes by power now, needs strength to fight power of motor. what happens if a child gets caught in power door closing?*ak

Consumer had the same problem as mentioned in nhtsa recall 02v293000. certain mini vans, the clockspring assembly may have been wounded incorrectly during vehicle assembly process. the dealer indicated this vehicle was not included in the recall due to vin. *ak *nm

My 2001 caravans a/c had gone out a little over 1 year after i bought it. i guess it wasn't their problem to report or inform us when we purchased this vehicle that there was an extended warranty through the daimler corp due to a possible a/c problem). on this model minivan the middle windows on the sliding doors do not open and the back windows only open a sliver so my 2 year old son was practically baking the middle seat with no air circulating and no windows to open for ventilation. my letter sent to daimler/chrysler is below and i am very upset about the professionalism and customer satisfaction i have or haven't received as i have sent them two letters, copy of my bill etc. and i have not heard one response from daimler daimler chrysler attention: reimbursement i purchased a 2001 dodge grand caravan in september 2001 it was a used van with 19,000 + miles and some original warranty still remaining. we purchased what we thought and were told to be an additional 75,000 of warranty covering us to 100,000. i havent had the van two years and my a/c compressor has gone out at only 83,000 miles we brought it to a dealer on july 29, 2003 to replace the a/c compressor and to check with our warranty company, which we were then told that our warranty expired at 75,000 miles. i was extremely irritated. i commute 120 miles a day and living without a/c in the summer cannot be done so i had the compressor assembly kit replaced in the tune of $1,094.00 then as an added slap in the face i received your letter on august 5, 2003 stating that you know of the a/c problems the 2001-2003 models are having but you will only pay to fix them if you havent gone over an unknown extended 70,000 miles. i am writing this letter today to ask to be reimbursed for the repair of my air conditioner. i have attached a copy of the work order showing the repair and cost as stated in your letter. sincerely, [xxx] [xxx]. *ak updated 07/25/2012 *js information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

Clock spring failure. airbag light constantly going off and on. contacted manufacturer-stated that no recall on my vehicle, but there were some recalls for that year and model, but mine was not manufactured during that time frame. Both the driver side and passenger side power windows have failed with less than 51000 miles and 3 years of service on the van. the windows start off being intermittent and slow then eventually fail, the amount of time from first problem to total failure is about a year, by that time the warranty runs out! *la

1. there were no warning signs, according to the mechanic it wasn't going bad it just went. 2. i was pulling out of a parking lot into traffic when suddenly the vehicle just stopped moving. i was merging into traffic and instead of getting out and going i got out and almost got hit. the car coming towards me slammed on the breaks and was able to swerve around me. 3. the rear planitary gear weld failed, this failure was described as a sudden catastrophic failor. the vehicle could not be put into park. it was towed into the dealership they said the fluid was bad and the filter clogged. the vehicle has 55,000 miles they say the 7/70 warrenty didnt apply to my model. the second mechanic said there was nothing wrong with the filter or the fluid that they have to replace a lot of these part the welds fail alot. i called diamler/chrysler and told them what the mechanic said that i wanted to send them back the part that showed that the failure was manufacturer's defect they explained to me that it didn't matter that it why it failed just that it was out of warranty and they don't want to see the part. i was lucky the next person may not be. the vehicle is 2001 dodge grand caravan sport. so far the hatch doesn't work when this part failed i was also notified that the wheel cylinder on the rear brakes failed and that could have caused fire to the vehicle the dealership wanted 4.000 plus tax to fix these problems. the entire rear braking system had to be redone and the transmission had to be rebuilt. i have decided not to deal with fixing the hatch so it opens.*ak

I heard a whining noise coming from transmission, without warning the transmission completely went out. i only have 38k miles on my van. the brakes went out at 20k miles and they already need replaced. the windows stick intermittently, and won't roll up. *ak

The release buckles on the 2nd and 3rd row seats of 2001 dodge grand caravan are above the buckle and can unlatch the seat belt by occupants arms or objects in the seat in an accident. this is a dangerous situation and needs to be recalled on all models with these gen3 chrysler belt buckles. the minivans usually carry children who are all at risk. the 2004 and 2005 models of the dodge and chrysler minivans now have the gen4 belt buckles with the recessed release buckles in the 2nd and 3rd row seats.*ak

1) 1st month-the tailgate latch wouldn't open. 2) 1st year - the driver's side window would periodically freeze and not go up. they said they couldn't fix it until it stayed broken 3) 11/06/03 at 45,000 miles the lights which flash when the remote unlocks the doors, flashed & couldn't be turned off. the headlights would not work when this happened. 4)11/09/03 the headlights turned off while driving on interstate then flashed back on. it happened 4 times. total darkness @ 70 mph is frightening

I noticed that at highway speeds 50-65 mph the van would shutter violently when the brakes were applied making it very hard to stop and also causing the van to pull left or right. at lower speeds i had the same results. i notified the dealer about this problem and was told this was normal reaction of the braking system. which i found to be quit odd since i've never exsprienced this type of problem before on a chrysler product. finally with 23075 miles, i took the van in to have the front rotors changed because they where found to be (warped). please note that i took the van to an outside vender (brake systems of america)where they did a full inspection of the braking system,and test driving the van they found that the front rotors where warped.also note the reason they didn't repair the van was because they said it might void the chrysler warranty.is this a wide spread problem with the 2001 chrysler and dodge products premature warping of either the front or rear rotors or a manufacturing, quality control issue which ever the consumer is getting stuck footing the repair bill.

I only have 25,000 miles on my 2001 dodge grand caravan. (1) the sway bar links were repaired twice, and parts are on back order for a third repair. (2) i had to replace the front brakes after only 14,000 miles, and they are half gone already at 25,000 miles, plus the rear brakes have to be replaced. (3) the engine has a flat spot during acceleration, and i get about 11 miles per gallon in the city, and about 15-16 miles per gallon on the highway. it stated it got 18 miles per gallon in the city, and 24 miles per gallon on the highway. (4) the transmission makes a moaning sound; the power steering was leaking fluid, (5) i had to replace the battery the first summer i had it, the anti lock brakes went out early this summer (6) the driver?s side window would not roll up when we were at bear country usa surrounded by bears (7) the shift gear lever sometimes slips from drive to neutral, and i have had that looked at twice (8) the cruise control went out last summer

When refueling, i slightly bumped the gas door and it broke in two. not a real big deal, but it is made of plastic and it broke very easily. not a great design. have there been more complaints of this problem? thank you

I own a 2001 grand caravan sport. at 35,000 miles i brought it to a dealer for the 30,000 mile check and to service a grinding noise in the ac unit and a shudder when turning at slow speeds. they fixed the ac and shudder by truing the rotors and new pads, however they also said there was a bulletin out on the steering pump and the unit was on back order...would call when it came in...yeah right. after an attempt on my part 3 months later to locate this pump, i gave up trying and continued driving. at 54,000 miles, i againg brought in my car because the ac compressor failed due to another bulletin on the pcm unit. i inquired about fixing the old problem with the pump and they admitted they made a mistake by not ordering the pump or contacting me but they would not honor the repair becaues it was now out of warranty and they would have to pay for it...even though it was under warranty when i brought it in and they admit to their mistake!!! never again for dodge...in fact, we are selling it to buy a honda.*ak

When involved in an accident my sons seat belt unlatched causing him to be thrown foward, luckly he survived the accident with only bumbs, cuts and bruises. the repair shop told me the belt seamed fine, but i have been bothered by this ever since and did my own research to discover that this is a know problem and they no longer use this type of buckle. crysler refused to change my buckles to the new kind and i fear if in another accident it could be fatal.*ak

Vehicle has 37000 miles and has had front brakes replaced (25000 miles) / new driver side power window motor assy. installed (not under warranty @ cost of $210 +) / front sway bar repaired (not under warrany either) and now the air conditionong is not working.....dealer says it will have to replace the complete system...estimate is for $1,284 plus tax!!!) are you kidding me! i have no faith in the dodge gran caravan product. this is a $30k vehicle. it should not be having these kind of issues w/ only 37000 highway miles.*ak

Iam the owner of a 2001 grand caravan sport and from day one the power windows driver and passenger acting up.they will go down but i cannot bring them up again immediately,i'll have to wait for a while and then come up a few inches , and wait again, it takes 5 minutes to roll up a power window.the first time chrysler repair the solenoids under warranty, a year later the same windows start acting up again to the point that i have to pull the window up with my hands and somebody else pushing the button at the same time, a process that takes at least 10 minutes, so much for the option of power windows .i contact chrysler about the windows and the response was it's not covered any more under their warranty.a car company as big as chrysler-benz are, if they cannot make power windows that will work , they should not be allowed to offered as an option.*ak

Driving around a curve at 35 mph the car would not straighten out and instead began fishtailing and spinning out of control. car ran off the road up an incline where it came to rest. right front wheel was perpendicular to car with tire hanging off of rim. we later learned that the right control arm had snapped. manufacturer claims i must have hit a very deep pothole, but we are unaware of any such occurrence. no deep potholes existed on area of road where car went out of control. also, the tire rim was not damaged. *jb

Dodge gc 2001 stalled while in motion with no warning during a very heavily traveled area in a school zone with many potential hazards. luckily i was only going about 10 mphs and coming to a stop. i interrupted flow of traffic at time of failure and when the tow truck came. a police officer helped direct traffic. mechanic said leak detection pump went out which caused the pcm (power train control module) to short out. this pcm controls many electrical elements. the engine light is on, the speedometer and passenger window doesnt work and i am told that several systems could fail but it is driveable. i have searched many dealerships in many states with all the same answer. the part i need, the pcm, is on national back order. there are none available in the us. this is the only vehicle i have to transport my children. i contacted dc corp and they will not tell me if it is safe to drive w/ a faulty pcm. it has been 3 weeks and my van is not fixed. i am at their mercy and they have denied responsibility as well as a rental request until my van can be fixed properly. "unfortunately, your request for a rental vehicle has been declined." they claim "we are unable to be of assistance in expediting parts that are not on order" the part has been ordered. again i questioned the safety of driving the vehicle with a faulty pcm with no answer as of yet. their are over 250 pcm's on back order.*ak

The integrated child seat buckle doesn't latch all the time, and it is hard to release. the integrated seat is located on the passenger's side middle bench seat. mechanic stated to the consumer that the buckle was defective. *ak

My 2001 dodge grand caravan sport had its serpentine belt shredded and alternator blown due to snow packed up in the engine. the angle of the undercarriage and the fact that there is no blocker on the underneath to prevent this from occuring made this an expensive ordeal. i was told by daimler/chrysler that there was no way they could control the snow so this wasn't their problem to fix. when i buy a vehicle, i expect it to work in all weather and road conditions. it should not matter if there is snow on the ground or not. they should be required to prevent this from happening.*ak

Speedometer was operating erratically. sometimes it worked fine, sometimes it raced from 0 to 120 mph, moving back and forth rapidly,and sometimes it rested on 0 mph while car was in motion. when stopped at stop sign and / or red light and while vehicle in gear, van sometimes stalled. van often stalled when moving in reverse. feared that vehicle would lose power at high speed, resulting in a collision. dealer worked on van for one full day. returned van claiming that problem was corrected; replaced output speed sensor. within five minutes after leaving dealer, speedometer began moving erratically again. vehicle has been with dealer for over one week. dealer claimed that speedometer would not act up for them long enough to determine problem. dealer wanted loner vehicle returned, butowner refused; not until problem was corrected. vehicle purchased june 2001 and had less than 29000 miles when malfunction was noticed -- early october 2003.*ak

I own a 2001 dodge grand caravan sport. i have experienced problems with the power windows on both the driverside and passenger side. the windows will intermittenly work. i have taken the vehicle to the dealership and paid 210.72 just for the repair of driverside. the dealer did not have the part in stock for the passengerside. the dealer stated that they replaced the power window regulator. i am still waiting for the passengerside regulator to come in so that too can be replaced. this concerns me because i would not be able to open the windows in case of an emergency, whereas i would not be able to open the door.*ak

Brakes pulse when stopping, especially noticeable at lower speeds. van mileage is about 22,000 miles. first noticed the problem at about 8000-10,000 miles, and it has steadily gotten worse. it is quite prominent now. presumably the rotors are warped. the (original) brake pads are still in very good condition. we are very conservative drivers and rarely make fast stops. dealer says brakes are warranteed for only a year. apparently, so are the rotors. the incident date is the date i posted this notice. the problem has been ongoing for well over a year. we didn't notice it much at first, but it is now pronounced enough one cannot miss it. *ak

I am writing in request for your assistance in a matter concerning my 2001 dodge grand caravan. recently we brought our vehicle into manahawkin chrysler plymouth; dodge on rt. 72 in manahawkin, new jersey for service. we were informed that the vehicle, which had only just hit 39,000 miles, was in need of a new steering rack and tie rods. i had the vehicle repaired and yet there continues to be odd noises in the front end. a few days later the steering did not function, as someone did not connect a power steering hose properly and all the fluid leaked out. i am now concerned for the safety of my family. as an individual who has a good understanding of auto mechanics, i am certain that a steering rack does not normally go bad so early in the life of a car. even the dodge mechanics i have spoken to have indicated that this should never have happened.*ak

We have a 2001 dodge grand caravan with dual sliding doors and power leftists. the power sliding door was starting to close and it hit my wife's hand and did not stop. it cut 3 fingers on her hand. as it was hitting her hand she put pressure on the door and it went back. we have reported this to dodge and their accident department said someone would contact us to inspect the vehicle. they have not done so. i have three small children ages 2 years to 4 years and if the door hit them it would crush them possibly to death. *la

Front end road noise that two mechanical shops attempted to repair by replacing sway bar bushings in one shop and a tie arm in the second shop ended up not correcting the problem. further investigation determined it was the rack and pinion. clerk at the dealership indicated they had a thousand on order, no exaggeration. he informed me that they all go on the chrysler minivans. my van is a 2001 grand caravan sport with 42000 miles. manufacturer will not do anything to assist. sounds like a recall is in order if they are as problematic as i have been informed. *la

Recently my power steering started making a noise when i turned. the van has 38,000 miles on it. when the dealership refused to look at it under warranty i called diamlerchrysler and complained. 2,000 miles over warranty should not prevent them from fixing a problem with the steering! diamlerchrysler authorized the repairs at no cost to us. the dealership told us later that there is a know design flaw with the reservoir, but no re-calls have been issued. we were lucky, the problem occurred close enough to the warranty to get diamlerchrysler to pay, but i personally feel that known flaws should be fixed at the company's expense.

Clockspring failed, causing airbag sensor light to stay on. *ak

Brake on front driver side ate into rotor where the rotor had to be replaced. it could not be resurfaced according to dealership. vehicle had 23000 miles. about 3/4 of that was interstate miles.*ak

Front disc brake rotors warped at under 25,000 miles. no trailer towing or exceptional use was involved. *nlm

While driving, the air bag warning light illuminated. dealer diagnosed that the air bag module and sensor had failed and replaced.

While driving, the rack and pinion failed causing consumer to lose control of vehicle's steering narrowly avoiding a collision.

Consumer states that while driving the torque converter "came apart" causing the transmission to fail. the manufacturer offered consumer $500 toward the total repair bill as a "goodwill" gesture.

Today, while driving our dodge grand caravan, my wife applied the brakes. they made a grinding noise, and the abs light came on. the car has slightly over 16,000 miles and this is the third time that this has occurred. the first was when the vehicle was 9 months old with 5 600 miles on it. the second was when the vehicle was 23 months old with 14,612 miles on it. today, in liess than 2 months and 2000 miles it has occurred again. we are worrired that there is a design defect with the braking system on this vehicle.*ak

My vehicle is 28 months old and i am already on my third fuel tank cap. the previous two caps began leaking which was detected by my computer. the first cap was replaced just this past november, 2002. this cap had to be replaced only 8 months later. this last replacement was not under warranty because my vehicle had reached it's 36,000 miles since the first time the cap was replaced in november of 2002. *ak

Headlights will go off and flicker. sometimes stay out for about 2 seconds, and then will eventually come back on. nothing i do will make them come back on. i have to wait for them to come back on on their own accord. it happens at varying speeds - any where from 15 mph to 65 mph. it doesn't matter if the road is smooth or not, or what the weather conditions are. i've reported it to diamler/chrysler with no results. they simply stated there have been no outstanding recalls on my vehicle. headlights going out on their own in the middle of the night while driving is an extreme safety hazard, not to mention i could get a ticket for driving without my headlights. i would like this situation looked into. thank you.*ak

The regulator on the front power driver side and passenger side windows is faulty. our van was built in canada and it appears to be a common trait of those vehicles. this is a serious defect that could result in injuries, someone should be held responsible for this defect and implement a recall to repair the problem- or discontinue manufacturing vehicles that dodge will not stand behind. *nlm

Alternator bolt broke in engine block, causing stress on timing chain/alternator bracket from serpentine belt thus breaking bracket, causing belt to come off. *tt

At approx. 59,000 miles, the transmission on our 2001 dodge grand caravan started lurching and slamming when you put it in gear. after only 1 1/2 days of minor occurrences, before we could have the car looked at, the transmission completely locked up. fortunately, my husband was able to get it into gear to get it out of the street, but it would not get into gear at all after that. we had to tow it. we are now having to pay $2000 to rebuild the transmission. this is our only car for carrying our twin toddlers, and this is the second chrysler vehicle we have owned that has had transmission failure before 70,000 miles. my best friend also had to get rid of a chrysler lebaron with the exact same issue. there is a systematic problem with chrysler transmissions, and it is a known defect that is sold to consumers. if we had bought this van new instead of 1 year old, i would be finding a lemon law attorney. *nlm

The rear axle warped. *nlm when the rear tire vibrated and made an erratic sound, the consumer pulled over and discovered the one rear tire had worn to the cord. (the second tire showed severe wear) *scc *jb

2001 dodge grand caravan sport drivers side window. window regulater is faulty causing the power window to operate very slow, and some times stoping in one place all together and to work one time and not the next! causing great risk for children! they could get a arm head ect.. cought and the window, with the regulator to decide if it wants to work or not in order to put the window up or down! considering this is a family van i think this is a great risk to children or adults !! i complanied to the dealership russ darrow group in appleton wisconsin back in jan 2003 of the problem, with no compliance, russ darrow group told me that the window needed to stop working all together , that it is normal to work slowley. now that my van is out of warranty they told me ther is nothing that they can do about it! after doing some resurch i talked with chrysler headcorders and they told me that my van was a canada built van and that they could not help me! dealship did not tell me that when you buy a canada car that you may have problems is the us for repairs including recalls! is they any thig that can be done about this problem and what are the laws in wisconsin? thank you debbie. *ak

I have a dodge grand caravan 2001. my model has the seatbelt style of gen 3 on all of my seats. we were unawareof the serious safety issues being raised about these particular seatbelts. we became aware from the news. for the past several months my 2 year old has been unbuckeling this very sensitive touch seat belt. now i know why this is so sensitive. we also own a 1997 dodge dakota with the same seat belts. i feel with as many deaths related to this particular seatbelt daimlerchrysler needs to provide a recall on all gen 3 seatbelts. i have 3 children under 6 and i want something done!!!

The vehicles seat belts did not work and would unlatch at any time. *nlm

The low-back bucket seats in the 2001 dodge grand caravan are very high and tilted (higher at the knees than at the spine) to the point that it is very difficult for an average-height woman to reach the accelerator without moving the seat all the way forward. (at which point the steering wheel is almost touching the body, the elbows are pressed into the seat back, and the knees hit the steering column when braking). when the seat is at a comforatable distance from the steering wheel, i cannot rest my heel on the floor, but have to drive with my toes only. the high-back bucket seats i tested did not have this problem. they were lower in the front (perhaps overall). the seat is so high that i (at 5'3") must duck my head in order to enter the vehicle without hitting it on the door frame.

All the lights flickered while in operation. the problem affected all exterior and interior lights. the dealer was not able to correct the problem. *jb

I have a 2001 dodge grand caravan es that has on 3 separate occasions had grinding noises coming from the left front tire area prior to the steering wheel locking up when making low speed turns. on the first incident the power steering was so tight i had to fight to turn left onto my street. fortunately there was no one behind or in front of me because the car kept going straight even when the road didn't. i was able to stop before i hit the curb. on the second incident, again i was turning at a slow speed, this time right, and again had a lockup of power steering. i was in the middle of the street again. this time with frightened passengers as they watched me struggle with the steering wheel to get us out of oncoming traffic. on the last incident, again fighting to turn onto my street, i didn't attempt to turn into my garage. i parked on the street and called for a tow to the dodge dealership to have them look at it. i didn't feel safe driving it. i wanted it to be checked out. i wasn't looking forward to going since the car is out of manufacturer warranty with 44,716 miles on it, but i took it and the dealer stated they tested the vehicle and made several turns and found the vehicle is operating as designed at this time, so i picked up my van and i told the service advisor that intermittent problems are always the hardest to find and i wouldn't have inconvenienced myself 2 days if there wasn't a problem. i feel there is a problem that should be investigated more completely. many problems don't show up until after the warranty has expired and people in the real world have driven some miles. under real life driving conditions. there is where you'll find any flaws. i am making this complaint because people may get hurt or killed if the power steering unpredictably continues to fail without warning. *nlm

The day after purchase, the wiper blade was off track on the passenger side, which caused a deep scratch to become embedded in the windshield. this defect was repaired. about a week ago, the wipers started to hit each other about 3/4 of the windshield, they would bind, get stuck and lifted about 1/4 of an inch. once loose they continued their operation. consumer is concerned about the wipers binding again and the potential of another scratched windshield. *jg *jb

I have a 2001 dodge grand caravan es with stock 17 inch wheels. power steering groans and vibration is felt in the steering wheel at low speed. i originally thought it required new brakes (due to millage being 42,205) and brought vehicle into a repair shop for that purpose. brakes were determined to not need servicing yet. then brought car to local dodge dealer (where purchased) for investigation. the dealer charged me $60.00 to tell me that it has a tsb (19-001-02) on the power steering and refuses to cover cost of correction due to car being 6,000 miles out of basic warranty. i claim this is a design defect as dodge wants to replace power steering reservoir and power steering return line as well as change the fluid normally in the reservoir from power steering to atf fluid!!! i called the chrysler consumer line and only got them to agree to split the cost (they pay for parts and i pay for labor).they were not sympathetic at all because the car was out of the basic warranty window. consumer line person went on to say that it would be my fault if power steering failed for not addressing the problem. i called the dealer to do the corrections and was told that the parts were not available and i would get a call when they get a confirmation for the parts!. i feel that chrylsler is not admitting to a design defect and forcing the consumer to pay for their problem which could lead to serious injury if the power steering failed.

Ruptured fuel line spraying gasoline onto muffler. the fuel lines are plastic and are attached to the fuel filter and are replaced together as a unit. the plastic line had a quarter inch rupture. this filter had less than 30k miles and was about a year old. why does chrysler use plastic fuel line? i do not know the cause - a weak inferior plastic or a sharp stone perhaps. either way, it does not matter. i have never seen a hard plastic used for fuel delivery. the old style rubber fuel hoses would be much better and safer. i am thinking this plastic is used because of the flex fuel option but i am not a mechanic. i am glad my vehicle did not catch fire. i was lucky. after replacing the filter with a new one from napa one of the fuel lines would not stop leaking. i had to return it for another non leaking filter. because of this i am also concerned about the quality of replacement parts as well. *tr

My minivan was in park with the engine running while i delivered a package to a neighbor during a thunder, lightning, rain storm. the van jumped into gear, raced forward and pinned me to the neighbor's door for more than an hour before being rescued. i spent several days in the intensive care unit of a hospital with a severe crush injury and hip sprain to my right leg. when the car was examined by my dealer/mechanic, nothing registered on the computer. i have located at least 2 other instances of this make, model, year jumping into or out of gear, with injuries. *jb

When starting my car, the automatic headlights come on, however only the passenger headlight works. when i turn on the lights the passenger lights stay on and the driver side remains off. when i turn my lights onto a bright setting, the driver side lights work and the passenger side goes out. i have replaced both headlights and this still occurs. i have researched this problem online and have noticed hundreds of people experiencing the same problem. because lights are a safety issue, i strongly believe daimler-chrystler must do a safety recall and fix this problem. *tr

The engine fan cooling system has created a constant vibration of the vehicle. they attempted to fix it with brackets, but it continues to vibrate. i have had this vehicle in ten times for this problem. they basically said they know about the problem, but have no other fixes for it. the van vibrates in park, or when idling with the brake on. it is worse when the air is running. i went to an arbitrator and was told even though the problem still continues, they wouldn't replace the vehicle, because it was only repaired once! they only offered me an extended warranty at no cost to me. i just want the vibration to stop. it is very annoying. after spending alot of money on this vehicle, i would like a smooth ride.*ak

Car sometimes rolls forward or backward when in gear and running (in the opposite direction of the engaged gear). for example, our driveway slopes downward, away from the street and toward our house, requiring us to back up the driveway to reach the street. when the car is started and put into reverse, it sometimes will roll forward until the brake is applied. conversely, when the car is in forward gear and is stopped (at a light or stop sign) on an incline with the front of the car being higher than the rear, the car will sometimes roll backward until the brake is applied. the dealership has told us that this is "normal" and that if the engine rpm is not at a certain level, gravity will prevail over the transmission. while this seems normal if the car had a standard transmission, this seems quite abnormal since it has an automatic. whenever we are on an incline, i must keep my foot on the brake and rev the engine prior to taking my foot of the brake or run the risk that the car will roll forward into our swimming pool at the end of the driveway, or backward into another car while in traffice. it's like driving my old vw.*ak

The transmission catastrophically failed for the second time on an exit ramp. fortunately, my wife was able to maintain control of the vehicle. the front barke rotors are warped. my wife was informed by dodge that this shimmy we were feeling as we applied the brakes was the abs engaging. after taking the vehicle to another dodge dealership, we were informed the problem is warped front brake rotors. in addition, because the vehicle has over 12000 miles, we now have to pay for the repairs! the leather seating in the rear is 'delaminating.' (i don't know of a better way to describe it). the rear automatic hatch does not automatically open. this too is a recurring problem.

Please request that manufacturer replace faulty fuel system parts as indicated by iihs crash tests. diamler-chrysler replaced the part on grand caravans manufactured after july, 2001 as well as on all 2002 models. obviously they took the iihs report seriously, however diamler-chrysler is not willing to remedy the problem for those of us who purchased the pre-july 2001 manufactured grand caravans. are they waiting for serious injury or death? please help. when i phoned diamler chrysler they informed me they were not able to duplicate the fuel leak in their own tests....yet they modified the grand caravans in the middle of a model year??? we need to get this matter rectified before someone is injured or worse.*ak

Front seats (manual, not power) are too high and close to dash preventing persons of a height of about 5" 5" from safely applying brakes - very dangerous in that legs are restricted by dash board - causes you to adjust seat to a more back position which simply trades one danger for another. cannot enter or exit vehicle because inadequate leg room between seat and dash area. chrysler refuses to acknowledge this problem. it's real! be warned - applies to manual seats - not power.

Dealership informed me that my clockspring was malfunctioning and needed to be replaced. the clockspring would have to be ordered and to return in one week at the start of the day to have it installed. when i returned, i was informed that it was still not available a was now due to it being on national backorder. the airbag light goes off and on at various times. it always comes on and stays on now at initial start up. plus the attention bell sounds at that same time. this can also occur when changing lanes and making turns. any motion of the steering wheel can make the light come on and bell ring at any time while vehicle is turned on. this occurs in any gear, as well as while it is in park. occassionally when driving on a straight-a-way, the light will go off. however a simple lane change makes it come on again. this malfunction makes me fear for my life as well as for others, whether they are my passengers or another vehciles occupants. my greatest fear is that the airbag will deploy while i am driving and cause me to have a serious or fatal accident. i also fear that if i am involved in anytype of accident that the airbag may not deploy at all. i strongly feel that my safety as well as others, is in serious jeapordy. how can i get this part into my dealership and resolved quickly? i anxiously await your needed reponse. thank you!*ak

I have contacted daimlerchrysler requesting a change to the fuel tank fitting to prevent the failure of the fuel system as was indicated during the test by the iihs. after this fitting was done the iihs saw no fuel system leakage nor any evidence of weakness around the redesigned part(news release 7/17/01). please help me to get this rectified before the failure results in injury or death. thank you. toni bicknell . *k

Windshield has a glare from the dash showing directly in your line of sight which makes it difficult to see object which are behind the glare. this is a real problem the brighter the sun shines the darker the glare. it actually looks like you are looking into a mirror and see the reflection of the dash back into the windshield. this very well could cause an accident . the second problem was defroster would not keep ice from forming on the inside of all windows of the van . windows appeared as if need to have ice scraped off but ice was on inside not outside. this definitely is a safety hazard because you can not see out of any windows. *ak

The front seats are too high making it hard for a woman who's height is 5'3"-5'5" to reach the brake/gas pedals without seat pulled all the way forward therefore not leaving enough room between consumer and air bag. nlm

A frontal offset crash test was performed, when the vehicle was rotated 90 degrees onto its side during the routine post-crash investigation of the underbody a stoddard fluid leak was observed near the fuel tank, the leak continued for 36 min until the vehicle was returned to its normal position, inspection of the tank showed that the leak originated from the top right side of the fuel tank where the sender unit makes a seal with the tank housing. nlm
