2001 CHRYSLER Concorde

I bought the car from a dealer. After a while the motor failed. I spent 2600. I had it replaced 6mo later that motor failed, it was under warranty (the motor) but I had to pay $800.00 for labor, then not even 8mo later that motor failed. I have put so much money in this car, we have only driven it for maybe a year. I’m still paying on the car it won’t be paid of until Nov 2011 all together I will have paid over 10,000 for a car and only drove it for 1 year. Considering the most me and my wife have made in a year was 35,000 we spent almost a third of a year working hard for a car that we would only get to drive for 1 flippin year. Sad, sad, sad. I have had many cars in the 10 years I’ve been driving and I have NEVER had one, not one catastrophic engine failure (except for the 3 in this car). And to add to that I’ve never had a car that wasn’t at least 5 yrs old with at least 60,000 mi. on it as a matter of fact all but the car I’m writing about and the car my wife drives now had over 110,000 when I got them. So is this my fault? Am I the unluckiest guy in the world? I don’t think so I’ve heard a lot of people singing this same tune about the 2.7 motors. So my question, why has nothing been done about these issues, why has this motor not been completely recalled? I realize there’s a lot of money at stake here, but if I had a company and produced a product that was prone to fail, or break, it would be recalled no matter what, even if it was the end of the company that would happen. So what is the problem, why isn’t Chrysler being held responsible?

While returning from an appointment on 695 beltway in Baltimore, the engine light suddenly came on and the engine began to chug and sputter. Also the car began to overheat.Fortunately I was able to make it off of the beltway onto the nearest ramp. The engine then stopped completely. I had the car towed to Heritage Chrysler where I purchased itfrom originally. I was told that I would need a new engine which would cost about 6000 dollars. The vehicle only had a little over 58000 miles. I have all of my maintenance recordsindicating that the vehicle has been serviced properly.

While driving on the highway the timing chain failed and ruined the entire engine. The engine on my vehicle is the 2.7L, in my opinion, this is the worst engine ever made. I’ve had mechanics tell me this engine keeps them in business.

While driving my 2001 Chrysler Concorde in July of 2003 down Mass. Pike 90E at 65MPH with my three children, the engine stopped functioning and I lost control of my car. I had no power steering and no power brakes. Fortunately I got off the highway avoiding serious injury. Chrysler states that the engine has excessive sludge and will not honor the warranty. I believe that the engine has some problem that results in it getting too hot which creates this sludge problem. Even on short 4 mile trips the hood and engine compartment are to hot to touch. These cars are a danger to drive and could pose a risk to anyone who is not strong enough to pull the car over without the benefit of power steering and brakes.My car was towed by Chrysler to Bertera Metro Jeep Chrysler in Springfield, MA. After inspection of the engine, it was determined that the crankshaft bearing had seized up and that the engine was \"gunked up\". The dealer basically told me that my neglect of the engine had caused sludge to gunk up the engine. I provided them with receipts of oil changes and information about the garage where some had been done. They called the garage and since the person that answered the phone didn\’t recognize my name immediately, they determined that no work could have been done there. Therefore, my warranty was void and I would have to pay for any repairs done. Chrysler ended up paying later for 870.00 worth of damage done to my car during repairs. My car was dropped off of the tow truck and rolled back into a wall and cracked the back bumper and also the front hood was chipped, installed crooked, and the rubber around the hood slipped down onto the headlights. I had to fight to get that taken care of. Fortunately, I had just had the car repaired from the accident, so I had confirmation from the auto body shop that the damage was not already present. We later wrote a letter to Aldo Bertera, the owner of many Bertera dealerships in the area. We outlined the fraud being enacted by Chrysler concerning their reluctance to pay any amount for the replacement of the engine. We also directed the dealer to the internet sights that outline many such claims by people in similar situations to myself. We told them they are selling defective cars with the blessing of Chrysler and that we would report them and Chrysler to the Better Business. They immediately answered our complaints with a phone call from the director of PR. He offered to provide me with free oil changes for 1 year following the change of my engine. I declined. He also declared their ignorance regarding the outlined issues. He did note, however, that he took the time to review some of the web complaints and said he found them very enlightening.

while driving car stopped oil light came on, there was water and antifreezer in the oil car did not get hot had to be towed home and to repair shop water pump out then oil light is still on at an idle after repairman said to change oil again and the oil sending unit he said the engine is bad because of the antifreeze in the motor from the water pump going out and need a new engine

While driving along my vehicle completely stopped and would not restart. Vehicle was towed to R&S Auto repairs and they informed the engine was bad.

We had a complete engine failure a couple of months ago and replaced a cam sensor. 1 day later engine failed and the mechanic informed us that the lines to the sensor were plugged. 1 month later a hard knocking noise developed. WE have had to mechanics look it over and both confirmed that the engine is shot and full of sludge. So the car sits in my driveway while we pay for it in our monthly payments. Some friends had their Intrepid fail in the same way last year and told us to trade ours in. We should have listened. We have maintenance records. These records are not perfect but we do take good care of our cars. If we HAD known this particular car had to serviced more regularly and possibly use a synthetic oil we would have done so and Chrysler should have sent out a letter informing the owners of this fact. However, that would mean they would have to admit to the problem. We have not replaced the engine yet. We are currently talking with our dealer about our options. If we do opt to replace and pay $5000-6000 we would be very interested in a class action lawsuit. We bought our Chrysler Concorde lx in September. On October 25, I was driving to work when the engine began making a loud knocking like sound… and the car turned off on the middle of a major highway… luckily I was not killed. I had it towed to a mechanic then from there it was picked up by the dealer where I purchased it, the inspected the vehicle and said the engine failure is due to sludge mainly in the middle half of the engine. The total cost of repairs for my vehicle total over $3000.

Water pump inside engine started leaking fluid which mixed with engine oil ruining engine.I changed the oil in this car religously every 3,000 miles expecting to run this car at least 250,000 miles . I sold a 1994 Dodge Intrepid to a college kid prior to buying this car that I ran up to 316,000 miles by taking car of it the same way I have been taking car of this car.The figure above is a estimate that I got from Shifflet Auto Care in Columbus Ohio (614 488 9951)that diagnosed the problem with my car.

VEHICLE WENT INTO SHOP FOR ROUTINE OIL CHANGE AND TIRE ROTATION. WE TOLD OUR AUTO SHOP TO CHECK INTO ENGINE TICKING NOISE.TICKING NOISE WAS FROM HYDRAULIC LASH ADJUSTERS. OUR SHOP PERFORMED TWO ENGINE FLUSHES USING NAPA ENGINE FLUSH. TICKING NOISE WAS STILL THERE, OUR SHOP REMOVED VALVE COVERS, ENGINE FOUND TO BE FULL OF SLUGGE. SHOP TOLD US ENGINE WAS BEYOND REPAIR AND INFORMED US OF DAIMIER-CHRYSLER ARBITRATION CASE.

timing chain failure destroying the engine due to sludge buildup. Car has been maintained under my ownership. Although my husband often changes my oil and that cannot be proven!! I bought the car with approx 25,000 miles on it and have not driven it more than 18,000 miles AND have 18 more months to pay!

Timing Chain and Tensioners went bad and was told this is a big problem with these engines with oil starvation to the top of engine no warning going bad one day running fine next day engine knocking very loud oil is changed regularly.Water pump went out filling the engine with antifreeze. No warnning that it was going bad temp gauge never got hot but check engine light came on while driving.

This car has been nothing but trouble. I ahve had my oxygen sensors go out twice. Then my engine threw a rod and I didn’t even reach 50,000 miles. This year my air conditioning pump failed and my frame cracked from stress. I sent it to three different places in order to confirm that it was not cracked due to the previous air conditioning repair.

This car has a 2.7 liter engine. The engine failed at 62000 miles and no one will do anything about it!! We were told it was oil sludge. It’s almost impossible to find a used engine because they are in such demand!! When calling used engine dealers they just laugh at us!! What a piece of crap. At least we’re not the only ones that this has happened to. Why won’t Chrysler do anything about this? Still making payments on a care we can’t drive.

The vehicle stopped abruptly while driving and managed to get someone to push to side of road. Made a call for help once my son arrived the car started back up it was making a knocking sound from the engine which has just gotten intensely worse. The vehicle was taken to auto repair shop closest to the location and we were told that the engine was gone in the car. The approximate cost to replace the engine would be approximately $7,000.00 with no guarantee that this would not happen again in about 36k to 55k miles. My auto repairman states that he has had several customers to come in with the same problems. I purchased this vehicle in October of last year from Bob Watson Motorsport and they assured me that this vehicle was the best car for him since he is in a wheelchair and it would run well. My son is receiving social security of $500 a month which $252.00 of this goes to the car note which now he is stuck with paying and not having a car to drive. This affects him now calling the Department Of Rehabilation Services (d.o.r.s.) who was going to put the hand control in the vehicle now we will not be able to get. His transportation back and forth to therapy for walking on braces has now been delayed as well as his being independent to take himself to appointments on his own. I am a single parent with my own home and a young daughter and we just cannot afford to have this vehicle repaired so it is now garaged at my older daughter

the vehicle started to knock and we took to the dealership and they looked at it and said due to the bad oil system in the engine that the main bearing and rod was bad and we needed to replace the engine the engine is a 2.7 dual over cam

The mechanic said the whole engine needs to be replaced and this is an ongoing problem with 2.7 liter engines. I should file a complaint.

The engine started to shut off and white smoke came out of the muffler and engine cut off and stopped. Upon inspection of the engine all the antifreeze was empty and for some reason it all was in the engine all the way up the dip stick surprisingly no antifreeze was leaking out on the floor I don

The engine is shot due to a sludge problem. This is an admitted problem by the service department of the dealership I took it to. There was no warning. When checking and looking into the problem, Chrysler admitted a design problem that does not allow the oil to drain back down into the engine. This then causes the engine to sludge up the oil and block the drain holes. This is a known problem with the 2.7 engine. It is now problem to produce all of the service records even though I bought the car used. I called many times without a return call from customer service. After the initial contact there has not been any return contact. I have left a number of messages and have emailed and recieved the standard “You prove you have done all of the maintenance and will think about what we may do.

The car was riding very well, then the next day we heard it pecking. I took it to a couple people who work on cars to listen to it. They both said it was a rod knocking. I took the vehicle to the shop to get it repaired, I drove the car a couple of months, and the engine started knocking again. I don’t have $2,000.00 dollars to just keep dishing out for this car.I am shocked at this situation. I have never seen or heard of anything like this happening, not once but twice.Now I hear that these Motors are no good. I need some help talking to these Chrysler people about making this kind of junk.Is there anything I can do to have them help me fix my car this time? I need my car and I like it. The car started to overheat on the highway and we turned the heater on to try to help enough so that we could get home- the heater wouldn’t work so we pulled over long enough to let the car cool down as we were only a couple of miles from our local Chrysler dealership. We took the car straight there and had them look at it. They told us that the engine was ruined and we would have to pay $5300 for a new engine and $1000 to have it installed. There was no warning signs at all that there was anything wrong until it was too late. We have always changed our oil at a regular schedule as well as all routine maintenance. Tried to find some information about a new engine online and ended up directed to this website. Thanks for your time- Damon

The car is going through a large amount of oil and when it gets just a little bit low there is a loud noise that comes from the engine. As soon as I put in some oil, the noise stops in about an hour or so. This is happening at least once a week right now

SLUDGED UP ENGINE , CAUSING LOSS OF ENGINE

Since purchasing the vehicle several years ago, I have never had any problems. I have changed the oil on a regular basis and always kept up on routine maintenance. The car began making a quiet knocking noise in the middle of February 2008 and on 2/27/08 I was driving to work when the sound became louder and I began losing power. By the time I got over to the side of the highway oil was spilling and after having the car towed was told that the motor was shot and that this was a common problem with this engine and to contact this website.

Recently bought the vehicle (22 Feb 2007). The vehicle\’s engine immediately became inoperational due to a complete engine failure.

Premature failure of engine. Timing chain broke on right side.

On Friday, May 28, 2004, while driving home from work, on a busy highway, the engine in my 2001 Chrysler Concorde seized causing a complete engine failure. The car had 37,300 miles on the engine, 1,300 over warrenty. The dealer informed us that it would cost $7,600 to fix the engine. After paying $425, to tear the engine apart to diagnose the problem. We received no satisfaction from Chrysler or Reedman’s Auto World in Langhorne, PA.We had the engine replaced by an independent service station, for $6,800. We spent $1,000 for a rental car while our car was being repaired.I conducted a great deal of research and discovered that Chrysler was aware of this defective engine, which causes the oil to become slude and sieze the engine, regardless of how well maintained the car is. When the service station owner dismantled our engine, he confirmed what I had discovered in my research. He said if we hadn’t told him that we had 37,000 miles on the engine he would have guessed our milage to be over 140,000.Just as disturbing as the engine defect was what I discovered next in my research. There is also a defect in the Rack and Pinion Steering System in the Concorde. It has become very obvious to me that Chrysler and Reedman’s care nothing about customer safety and only care about money.Were it not for the fact that we still owe, $8,600. I would get rid of this 2001 DEATH TRAP. I had the service station owner confirm for me that the Rack and Pinion Steering System was safe.We have told all of our family, friends and co-workers to pass the word to their families and friends of Chrysler’s total disregard for customer safety, and Reedman’s lack of concern for the same.We had to remortgage our house to pay the $8,000 to repair our car. Our oldest daughter begins college next year, and it makes me sick to my stomach to know that this $8,000 is in the pockets of Chrysler and Reedman’s and not being used for my daughter’s education. We have been loyal Chrysler customer’s for the last 17 years. Our last 4 cars have been Chrysler’s. On 9/30/03, I was driving to work on U.S. Hi-Way 45 in heavy rush hour traffic, and the 2.7L engine on my 2001 Chrysler Concorde suddenly failed. When the car was later towed to the local Chrysler dealer and the proble dianosed, I was informed the engine was completely gone due to sludge build-up. Further more the service dept. manager suggeted that it appreaded that I had not changed the oil during the two years I had driven the car. (Untrue) The problem was not covered by warrenty (expired by 6,000 miles)and Chrysler and the dealership refused to cover any of the extimated cost.($6,900 for new engine or $4,000 for a used 30-day warrenty engine).

Oil stuck in oil pan – engine siezed

No noise or overheating. Gauges registered normal. Oil was checked that same day in the morning.While driving down the highway one hour later the engine just died, we were able to pull over to the side of the road without getting in an accident. Car towed back to garage. Checked over by mechanic. Found antifreeze in the oil. Needs new engine.

NEW ENGINE NEEDED ENGINE SLUGGED UP. BAD MOTOR

My son-in law Mr. Aaron Cumberlanson, purchased this car from Cutter Dodge in Waipahu HI, and I co-signed for him. About 6 months ago, it had a partial warranty left on it. On may 11 2007 he was driving home from work and he heard a clanking sound, he pulled over and noticed that the oil had spilled all over the ground. He got a ride home to let me know that the car had broken down. He towed it to cutter service dept. and they told him that they wouldn\’t be able to check it out till Monday 14 may 2007. They called him later that day to let him know what the problem was; they said that the oil-pan had cracked due to a part going through it when the engine blew up. They then told him that his warranty had expired by 2000 miles ago .and he would have to pay to get a new engine replaced which will cost him about $4500.00, which he don\’t have. I called wells Fargo the financial co. who we have the loan with, they expressed their regrets stated there was nothing they could do, and that we would still have to make the payments

My motor started losing compression and then just died on I95. Luckily I was able to get into the shoulder before the vehicle completely stopped. I had a mechanic look at the vehicle and he told me that I never changed the oil, I was insulted at the least. I changed my oil every 5,000 to 7,500 miles because of the mileage I put on the car, all highway miles. I called Chrysler and they told me there was nothing they could do because the vehicle was out of warranty. So my car sits on the side of my mechanics shop till I can afford a motor. In the mean time I had to purchase another vehicle to get back and forth to work, now I\’m making two car payments..

My Chrysler Concorde had 35571 miles on it when it expirenced engine failure due to “sludge” in the engine. Total cost of the repair is 9000.00 manufacuer will pay 3000.00. Chrysler customer service is a joke they will not help in any way and if you ask for the phone number of a Managing Director or Vice President they will not give it to you. The oil in this car has been changed regularly and Chrysler should pay for 100% of repairs due to this designe flaw.

My Chrysler Concorde died December 10,2007 at 96,366 miles from engine failure caused by loss of oil pressure due to sludge build up. A knowledgeable mechanic alerted me to the computer sites explaining in painful detail why my car, which still looked great, had scared me to death by dying in the middle of a busy, curving road. I was sure I was going to be killed before I could get my car off the roadway. I had always changed my oil faithfully and was planning to drive my car until the difficult real estate market improved my financial situation. Instead, I was left with a “throw-away car” which, effectively, has no resale or trade-in value. This certainly destroys my faith in Chrysler products and the company’s integrity.Earlier in 2007, the hood panel which covers the wiper area flew off while I was driving on the expresway. And in August, 2007,I experienced a radiator leak and had to have the thermostat and gasket replaced.

My car was fine then it became somewhat sluggish on the way home from work. Following a.m. I came to a stop sign on way to work and it conked out and would not start. Got it started and nursed it to work (1 mi. or so). Ended up taking it to the mechanic thinking it was either a fuel pump or filter, or the like. Mechanic called and said the engine was fried and oil and water had mixed. There is a 2.7 engine in the car and I see that their was/is a lawsuit/class action. My car started to make a diesel engine type noise. We took it to our mechanic on 4/24/07. He informed us the engine needs to be replaced. He also noted that this model has been having problems with this specific engine and informed us of this website. What are our options is there any financial help available. What steps do we need to take to resolve this issue.

I was driving the car and it just quit no engine light no nothing. When the people at the repair shop took the oil pan off there was just sludge in there. They told me the engine was shot and would need to be replaced. This happened at 40,000 miles. I still owe $8500.00 on the car and when I called around for repair cost I was told it would cost for $3800.00 to $5500.00 to replace. The car has been parked since. Then in August I learned from some one that had the same thing happen and they gave me this site address.

I HAVE NOT PAID ANYTHING YET, BUT THIS IS AN ESTIMATE FROM A MOTOR INSTALLATION FACILITY. I have a 2001 Concorde that suffered an engine failure in Dec of 2003. No lights, no warning, the car just stopped running in the middle of the street. I had it towed to the dealer, I wasn\’t real concerned at this point because I purchased the extended warranty on the car, which is a joke and a waste of my money. The dealers mechanic called after a few days told me that the engine failure due to a sludge problem. After trying to tell me that I neglected the car and failed to get oil changes, I produced the oil change receipts that I had. Apparently that wasn\’t good enough from them, the claim to fixed the car was denied. So here I owe thousands of dollars on a car I can\’t drive and can\’t afford to fix. > The dealer informed me that it would cost between $9,000 and $10,000 to fix. Frustated with this company. They need to be held responsible for selling these cars. My family and I depended on this car. Not only had it ruined out Christmas Holiday but it continues to ruin every function we need to attend. I bought this car with 79,000 miles, This car has had all oil changes at correct times and has ran great, Last week I started it all of sudden, its knocking and the oil lights on, prior to this it ran perfect nothing wrong! I took it to a mechanic, they told me this could be a manufacturer default being it has the 2.7 liter and there has been tons of problems with them since they came out. The mechanic told me that the timing chain stretched and had possibly bent a couple of push rods! I’ve taken great care of this car since I had it, almost perfect before this! I know this is just over 100,000 miles but If this is a problem from the manufacturer I’d like to get this problem fixed, I feel it is nothing I’ve did, there wasn’t even any warning just started doing it! What’s that about!!!

I bought this car used and it started to give me trouble after only 10 or 11 months. My sons changed the oil on regular basis, and it still started giving me trouble. I had it to the first repair shop and they told me about the sludge problem, and that in order for it to have gotten that bad, it had to have happen before I even bought the car. When I bought the car, I was not told about any sludge warning from the maker of the car. If one was sent to the original owner, I can very well see why he got rid of the car. I was also not told about any warning from the dealer that I bought the car from, L Street Autos on 60th and L street in Omaha Nebraska. When my son changed the oil , was not educated enough in cars to tell whether there was any problem with sludge. I even had the oil changed at a Chrysler Dealership one week before the car broke down, and they never mentioned the sludge, so if they didn\’t notice it, how can an unskilled person know about it, being there. The Chrysler dealership is the one that fixed my car exactly one week before it broke down for good, and they changed the oil then, so why didn\’t they mention the sludge if it was bad enough for the car to completely break down. Now, I am without a car. I still have several thousand owed on this car, and I am on disability and can\’t afford to get another car, and I am told that the Chrysler company won\’t take care of the problem. If they knew that their engine that they put into the Concordes were no good then why didn\’t the company recall them before it was to late, or demand that any used car dealership warn the consumer of their cars what may happen, then maybe we wouldn\’t have bought the cars in the first place. Then we have the people that bought the extended warranty believing that like the car the warranty would be good. Warning the original buyers about the engine being of poor quality , does not help the second buyer of their unless cars. They believe that if they warned the original owners of the poor quality of their engine, that it lets them off the hook to future buyers who believes that their cars are of high standards. As far as I am concerned the Chrysler auto makers are a disgrace to the American people and to our country. They are a shoddy bunch of people. They are allowed to sell poor quality autos and then won\’t honor the buyers of their poor quality of car. So, while we the second buyers of their poor quality auto have to continue paying off the loans on these worthless cars, Chrysler just sits back and enjoys the profits that they made off of their inferior autos. I was told that the dealer who sold me the car should not have even sold it to me. I called them and told them about the problem, and they said that the buyers of their used cars should know about the sludge problem. So the used car dealers are as shoddy as the Chrysler Company. I used to have another Chrysler car, before this one, but never again will I ever own another Chrysler and my family members and friends has seen what kind of business Chrysler does, so they will never look at a Chrysler when they go looking for a good car.

I bought a 2001 concorde a couple of months ago with 59000 miles on it. Just rccently I was driving home from work on the highway and the engine totally failed. I got it towed to a certified mechanic and they told me I need a whole new engine.

I am contacting you on behalf of my husband as he is currently in Iraq. The car has been found to have engine problems. I was directed to contact you due to the recall for his enigine. I have researched this car for this problem as well as been told by 2 different mechanic of the recall on the engine. I need to know where, when, or how to have the car repaired due to the recall.

Hi, I have the 2.7L defective engine in my car. I turned 68k 69k miles. I always had the oil change between 3k and 4k miles. I called Chrysler corporate and reported the problem at 75k miles. They told me that this is the first they heard about this issue. The local service Technician told me that it is not uncommon to add a quart of oil every 1,000 miles. My car is out of warranty now. I wouldn\’t have purchased the car if I would have known about this issue. Do you have any advice, should I take the car up to Chrysler and waste my time or is something being done. This is my family car and can\’t afford to go out and purchase another car. I\’m also hearing the car could seized while driving, this is very unsafe and Chrysler should be responsible for their defected engine. First symptom was car was dead when ignition key was turned on.. Car also quit running at random times while driving.. Dealer has serviced the car 3 times and cannot locate the problem – HOWEVER – after having the car towed in for the third time (Nov 4th 2004) – dealer found HEAVY sludge in the engine and speculated that that may be the cause.. Car has 24000 miles.. Car was serviced at 12000 and 18000 miles..

engine totally stop running. the auto shops that we took it to said that the whole enging needed to be replaced. the autoshop was the one that gave us this sheet to file this complaint,

engine started with a tapping noise.had oil changed before it was due noise stayed same for about 3 days then started getting worse.took it in to repair shop to have it checked mechanic was taking manual oil pressure reading when engine lost oil pressure and quit running.engine has internal damage and will need to be replaced.

Engine sludged causing tensioner to fail which caused slack in the timing chain which then broke the primary timing chain guide. When the primary timeing chain guide broke the timing chain went thru the valve cover causing a crack in the oil pump. Then end result was total engine failure.

Engine began running funny and making a knocking or pinging noise. I thought it may have been low on coolant or oil. I check and change fluids often. I checked and the coolant level was just fine. When I checked the oil I noticed it was not honey colored like it usually is. It was thick and black like mud almost. I could not believe what I saw. I called around to mechanics to get an Idea of what was going on with my car. I soon realized that this has been an ongoing problem with the 2.7 liter engines like mine. The estimates for fixing or replacing my engine was in the thousands between 1800 to 4500 dollars. I felt ripped off. The more I learned about others having the same problem I realized that there has to be something wrong with the way these engines were produced. This is my only mode of transportation to support my family and I am disgusted that Chrysler has not let anyone know about this ongoing problem.

Due to a build up “oil sludge”, the engine on my 2001 Chrysler Concorde is on the verge of failure. It is driveable, but only for very short distances until the oil warning light will flash at stop lights. The engine made a knocking noise from the lower end of the engine area on April 29 while the oil lamp was flashing. A certified mechanic looked at the car yesterday and informed me that my car suffered from and extreme sludge build up due to inadequate oil passages that become clogged with oil sludge. I am absolutely disgusted that a 23,000 dollar car should only have a life expentancy of 50,000 miles.

As I was driving on the PA turnpike at 65mph I heard a loud noise that sounded like a belt failed the car lost power. My mechanic said it spun a rod. Oil did not get to a bearing and it burned up. I just got back to work and can not afford to fix this problem. I had the oil changed every 3,000 miles I only let it go 2 times more that 4,500 miles. This car has been an oil burner from day one. I have owned Chrysler since 1976, shame on them.

Although I have kept up with oil changes on a timely basis,my engine in completely gone. My warranty company wne out to Q.C Auto Sercive #563-386-4505 twice and said that therewas sludge built up (my 2 mechanics, myself and the investi-gator saw no such thing..so they decided that they would notcover my car. I did go to the dealership to discuss this with them, a gentleman got intouch with the warranty company and they said to send all receipts to them and they would cover it. Unfortunately,I don’t have “receipts” for 4-5 of the oil changes as a friend of my son’s did the work. He was a reputable mechanic and did manage a Jiffy Lube for some time. He did this for me as a favor and dinner so I have no receipts, but I do have dates and mileage.I have not seen my car for two months and am at my wits end on what to do, as I was sold a car that evidentally had problems from the beginning (the dealership head mechanic actually knew about it) and no one wants to help me. I do not have $12,000 to replace an engine that should not have blown up. Please help me!

After faithfully changing my oil every 3,000 miles for 105,000 miles, my engine starting making a horrible noise with no warning or lights. The engine stalled and I had it towed. My mechanic informed me that it is engine failure caused by sludge and that is a common problem in the 2.7 L V-6 engines.

According to the Service Station, Gravett\’s Garage, the engine is bad and needs to be replaced. 7/15/06 driving on i90 at Roselle Rd in Schaumburg, IL. The engine made a strange noise and started losing power. I pulled over and stopped as the engine died, smoke was coming out of vehicle. I had vehicle towed to my mechanic on 7/15 and was advised on 7/17/06 that vehicle engine seized due to oil sludge and it would be 7795.00 to replace engine .

Threw a rod. Engine is ruined. Less than 100,000 miles and the car was cared for meticulously. We may not be able to repair the vehicle for less than the market value. We still need to make the final decision whether it is best to repair or junk the car. I’ll never buy a Chrysler product again.

OIL LIGHT CAME ON IN OKLAHOMA. TOOK IT TO CHRYSLER DEALER AND HE RECOMMENDED DIFFERENT OIL THAN WHAT I WAS USING IN ARIZONA. HE ALSO STATED THAT I WOULD PROBABLY NEED A NEW ENGINE AS THAT ENGINE WAS ONLY GOOD FOR ABOUT 70,000 MILES. I TOOK THE CAR TO TWO MECHANICS IN SHEBOYGAN AND BOTH TOLD ME THAT THE ENGINE WAS FULL OF OIL SLUDGE AND THE ONLY ANSWER TO MY PROBLEM WAS A NEW ENGINE.

In 07 my heating system went out without warning, took to dealer it was repaired, then in March, my heating went out again, now my heater heats when it feels like it, some days it works and someday it don’t, mechanic never could figure out why this was happening, because everything had been checked or replaced.
 
My real problem came in May of this year. While driving home from work the top of my engine where my coolant circulate blew off, car ran hot and had to be towed off of interstate. The strange thing about this was that my temp. Hand did not register that my car was running hot, everything was normal, then all of a sudden I saw smoke and steam coming from under my hood, I immediately pulled over, when my car was towed to my house, my mechanic popped my hood and low and behold the top of my engine had blown off, this a crazy, I have regular oil changes and have my coolant levels checked regular, to get my car repaired it will cost about 900.00 or more, I am not even finish purchasing my car yet, I still owe at least 6500, I bought this car used, so I don’t know what I am going to do.

I just bought the car 1 month ago and the motor is bad. I was driving car down the expressway when I started to hear noise from motor. Took it to repair shop and said motor was bad. Estimate to put new motor in was $6500.

I have not had the engine repaired or replaced due to finances. I did have a certified ASE mechanic look at the car and he said the engine did fail because of sludge build-up. The car only has 43000 miles on it and has been meticulously maintained, the problem being that oil changes were done by the previous owner himself at home and not by a shop. The oil was changed every 2500 miles ever since being purchased new. I wrote a letter to Chrysler over 2 months ago and have not received any reply at all!! This was my parents car and they give it to me and I thought maybe I could fix it fairly cheaply, but have found out it will cost several thousand dollars to repair of which I don’t have.

Car was operating as normal on a trip. At a traffic light it started to overheat. Stopped the car had it was towed to a garage in PA and they said 1st it needed a head gasket, then came back and said the engine was not repairable and that it needed to be replaced. I got a 2nd opinion and the 2nd garage also said the car had no compression and needed to be replaced.

2.7 V6/167 liter engine failure. Oil starvation problem,bearing failure,water pump failure,gasket concerns i.e. coolant entered the oil cavities causing damage to engine. Engine was replaced by Jasper Engines and Transmissions on 6/19/08.

2.7 LITER V6 CHRYSLER CONCORDE ENGINE IN EXCELLENT WORKING CONDITION WITH CONSTATNT OIL ANF FILTER CHANGES EVERY 3000 MILES UNEXPECTEDLY FAILED. WATER PUMP REPLACED ABOUT 15,000 MILES LATER MY RADIATOR FAN HAD TO BE REPLACED 5000 MILES LATER. HEAT- ING PROBLEMS CONTINUE #3. A PANEL ON THE FRONT HOOD FLEW OFF WHILE I WAS ON THE FREEWAY. IT CAME OFF STRUCK MY WINDSHIELD AND IT WAS GONE. I HAD ABOUT 70,000 – 80,000 MILES AT THE TIME. I bought the car from a dealer after a while the motor failed i spent 2600. i had it replaced 6mo later the motor failed it was under warranty (the motor) but i had to pay $800.00 for labor, then not even 8mo later that motor failed. i have put so much money in this car we have only driven it for maybe a year. i'm still paying on the car it won't be paid of until nov 2011 all together i will have paid over 10,000 for a car and only drove it for 1 year. considering the most me and my wife have made in a year was 35,000 we spent almost a  third of a year working hard for a car that we would only get to drive for 1 flippin year. sad, sad, sad. i have had many cars in the 10 years i've been driving and i have never had one, not one catastrophic engine failure. and to add to that i've never had a car that wasn't at least 5 yrs old with at least 60,000 mi. on it as a matter of fact all but the car i'm writing about and the car my wife drives now had over 110,000 when i got them. so is this my fault? am i the unluckiest guy in the world? i don't think so i've heard a lot of people singing this same tune about the 2.7 motors, so my question why has nothing been done about these issues, why has this motor not been completely recalled? i realize there's a lot of money at stake here, but if i had a company and produced a product that was prone to fail, or break, it would be recalled no matter what, even if it was the end of my co that would happen. so what is the problem, why isn't chrysler being held responsible? *tr

I was driving down the highway on way to work one morning, as i had done many times. i was going approx 55 mph and made a decision to pass a slower veh that was traveling ahead of me. as i passed the other vehicle my car shut down, without any warning of lights or anything the engine just stopped. it has not started since. it needed to be towed from the scene. it was definitely a safety hazard. i am lucky that i was able to coast to the edge of the road safely. i have been making a $300 per month car payment on a vehicle i can't use unless i spend $3000 to replace the engine. i am a single mother and i do not have the means to do that. i has infered with my safety and my job.

I had a 2001 chrysler concorde with a 2.7l engine. i serviced it every 3,000 miles and never had a problem. then one day, at 95,000 miles, i was driving it and the thermostat shot to overheating. i pulled over, had a service station look at it, and they said it was something a dealer needed to look at. i had it towed to a dealer and they said the 'engine block was cracked, that coolant and oil mixed and got sludge in the engine and the engine was shot.' at 95,000 miles it would cost me more to fix then the car was worth, so i had to buy a new car. someone told me there were thousands of this exact problem with this chrysler engine and chrysler told me there was no recall and nothing i could do. i searched the web and found a lot of articles about how big a problem this is and how many cars it has affected, and suggested owners report this to you. someone needs to make chrysler do something about this. while in my case it didn't result in an accident (it almost did when my car died on the road), and the car didn't catch on fire, do people have to die or cars catch on fire before chrysler is made to be accountable for an obvious engine flaw? i would appreciate any help or guidance you can give on what recourse i have and should pursue. bob bladel ashburn, va *tr

The hydraulic struts that hold open the trunk lid on my 2001 chrysler concorde lxi have failed resulting in a painful bump on the head for yours truly. i fear for the safety of anyone who uses the trunk for any purpose, especially family members. it seems to stay open ok during warm weather. *jb

On 2/1/07 i brought my 2001 chrysler concord in for maintenance with the complaint that the oil light is randomly flickering on. the service adviser informed me that there is a problem with this engine involving sludge and eventual engine seizure. *jb

I was driving at 65 mph on the turnpike and the car loss compression. i heard something clanking around and i was able to pull off the road. the mechanic said it spun a rod and the crankshaft is damage. *jb

The trunk lid hydraulic support devices are failing to hold the lid open allowing it to fall without warning. this started happening in the past six months and has resulted in minor injuries to both me and my wife (bumps and bruises). i purchased the car new in 2001 and it only has 36,000 miles. the car has always been kept in an enclosed garage and has never received any damage. i fear a more severe injury will result if this problem continues. *nm

The rear seal on the back glass has developed a leak in the past couple of days. this has flooded the back seat and floor, and gotten the trunk wet. i haven't had it fixed as of yet. this has happened before on another chrysler product my wife owned, a 1998 neon. *nm

Funny odor when running air conditioning or the heater. told there was a slight leak and the repair would cost $1200 to $1400. the car is a 2001 concorde with 43676 miles, sure was hoping to get more than that out of a heater or ac unit. *nm

I am the unfortunate owner of a 2001 chrysler concorde with a burned out 2.7 liter engine, the same one you are investigating on this web site. i was driving to work on the morning of 7/25/05 on the northbound i90 expressway on grand island, n.y. traveling at approx. 60 mph when the engine temperature indicated an engine overheating condition and began to shut down. i was fortunate to have good driving skills as this catastrophic engine failure shut down all power accessories on the vehicle. i had no power steering or power brakes at this point and was fortunate to be at the whitehaven rd. exit. with much difficulty i was able to shift the car into neutral and coast onto the exit ramp and parked the concorde on the shoulder of the road. attempts to restart produced a grating metal on metal sound and i new the engine was shot. the same day i called around for the best price on the cost of an engine replacement and decided my best option was not to go to a chrysler dealer as they do not honor any warranty for replacement of this engine and opted to have aaa deliver the car to my local garage for an engine replacement. it is now 11/27/2005 and i am unable to find an affordable engine replacement and still paying insurance and loan payments on the vehicle(i still owe $4.5k). my engine failed at 95k miles and i am told that this one of the better 2.7 liter engines, nonetheless i am stuck paying for a dead horse. *jb

I purchased my car in oct. 2004, with around 32,000 miles on it. may, 2005 ( with 54,000 miles) my engine gave up on me. i was driving highway speed on my way to work when my engine light popped on, two minutes later my engine stalled in the middle of traffic. i was able to restart my engine after about 15 min later. i had my vehicle towed to the nearest chrysler dealer, i was told that i had low oil, resulting in sludge build up. i'd just received an a oil change on april 22, 2005. the dealership told me to see a salesman and purchase a new vehicle. i questioned him by asking how to fix my car , he said to purchase a new engine. i had my vehicle towed to 4 other dealerships and mechanics, they all said that i have some type of internal engine malfunction that can not be fixed. i contacted daimler , i was told that i was out of warranty, and they could not help me. mean while, i have been paying on a vehicle that does not work, i have been missing work due to not having transportation, and i just got my vehicle eight months prior to failure, so i still owe more that four years on my car. please enlighten me on what to do. i understand that there is a problem that needs to be addressed on behalf of daimler, why is there nothing being done about it?*jb

I own a 2001 chrysler concorde with approximately 63,000. my wife was driving the car, when the engine seized up. we had it towed to a chrysler garage in shinnston, wv where one technician admitted to many problems with the 2.7l engine. the garage manager, however, denied any problems. although there were no injuries from this engine failure while driving, we have suffered severe economic injuries, as we have a car that is not paid for, not drivable, and will cost, at a minimum, $6,000 to fix. although many internet sites tell of how many people are suffering the same consequences as we are, no one at chrysler corporation will admit to this problem. *jb

Pulled out of parking spot when right front wheel would not turn with the steering wheel tried to get off the street and the left front wheel wouldn't turn with the steering wheel had a mechanic look at it and discovered that both the tie rod ends on the rack and pinion had fallen off, bolts had backed out. also, discovered that the rack and pinion wouldn't move anymore while rotating the steering wheel.*ak

I was driving on the highway and my engine just failed. i had it towed to the chrysler dealership and paid 100 to find out what was wrong with my car. they told me that the timing chain failed. once the timing chain failed it sent the chain through the engine and basically destroyed the entire engine. there was only 59,000 miles on the engine which is well below chrysler's 100,000 mile replacement reccomendation. i had to have the engine rebuilt which cost $4,000 and drained my savings completely. *ak

12/29/03 took car to dealership to check out intermittant clicking noise in engine. upon inspection found sludge. service department recommended replacing engine with the long block. i asked the service manger what would cause this and he stated 'it just happens". the replacement estimate was $6500.00. we could not afford to pay $6500.00 out of our pocket and continued to drive and maintain the car. it continued to make the noise intermittantly. in may 2004 while driving the car it began making an awful noise. upon pulling over the car died and the motor had seized. this has had a huge economic impact on our livelyhood. as this car was our only reliable form of transportation, we were forced to purchase a used car that we could make small payments on as we needed transportation. we are required to maintain monthly car payments on the concorde and keep full coverage insurance on this useless car sitting in my drive way. i still owe two and a half years worth of payments. this car will sit in my driveway until i can save enough money to replace the engine which probably will be after the car is paid off in 2 1/2 years.

1) my "check engine light" comes on continually. i have had it in three times and have been told it's my gas cap or a loose hose. this is not true, as it came on the 2 and 3rd time, after "repairs" had been done, and i had not refueled the car or driven in poor conditions. each time the light comes on after i have driven about 75 miles. 2) the lights on the instrument panel randomly fade in and out. 3) after getting the oil changed on 5/24/04, i was down a quart of oil by 6/3/2004. 4)the engine runs very hot and stumbles when i accelerate after stopping. when i called the service center at the dealer to express concern over this, i was told i need to change my oil. i reminded them i had just changed my oil, but i then expressed my concern about engine seizure, which i have learned is not uncommon in this vehicle. i asked what could be done to prevent this. i was told that this doesn't happen to people who change their oil. what happens if the engine does seize, even though i've had regular oil changes? how can i be proactive when the service centers deny the problem even exists? *ak

On may 28, 2004, the engine in my 2001 chrysler concorde failed while driving home from work. the car was towed to the deal (reedman auto world, langhorne, pa). we were told it would be $7,600. to replace the engine. we have 37, 500 miles on the car - 1,500 beyond the warranty, therefore neither reedman or chrysler would honor the warranty. in conducting research on the defective engine i have learned that the steering rack and pinion is also defective on this model. the steering may fail causing the car to veer into oncoming traffic. this car is a death trap. i will not place me or my family into this death trap. unfortunately we still have $8,600. and 2 1/2 years left on the loan. i am in a real dilema. the car has been towed to a service station where the owner will put a rebuilt engine that has corrected the defect for $2,000 less than reedman's.*ak

The check engine lite went on suddently. we had the crank & cam sensor replaced in late may 2004. we were at 37,000 miles. just out of warranty. we had to pay over $300. the dealership blamed sludge. this can't be the case. the car has been well taken care of. now the timing belt is going. again blamed on sludge. we have been told it can die on us at anytime. chrysler will not accept any responsibility. why is everything blamed on sludge. there is apparently something else wrong that chrysler does not want to own up to. *ak

On 9/30/03, i was driving to work on u.s. hi-way 45 in heavy rush hour traffic, and the 2.7l engine on my 2001 chrysler concorde suddenly failed. when the car was later towed to the local chrysler dealer and the proble dianosed, i was informed the engine was completely gone due to sludge build-up. further more the service dept. manager suggeted that it appreaded that i had not changed the oil during the two years i had driven the car. (untrue) the problem was not covered by warrenty (expired by 6,000 miles)and chrysler and the dealership refused to cover any of the extimated cost.($6,900 for new engine or $4,000 for a used 30-day warrenty engine).

While driving my 2001 chrysler concorde down the interstate at 65mph with my three children, the engine stopped functioning and i lost control of my car. i had no power steering and no power brakes. fortunately i got off the highway avoiding serious injury. chrysler states that the engine has excessive sludge and will not honor the warranty. i believe that the engine has some problem that results in it getting too hot which creates this sludge problem. even on short 4 mile trips the hood and engine compartment are to hot to touch. these cars are a danger to drive and could pose a risk to anyone who is not strong enough to pull the car over without the benefit of power steering and brakes.

Engine light repeatedly comes on. have taken it to the dealer at least six times and was told that the intake manifold sensor was defective. the dealer contacted chrysler, and was told to replace the sensor again and rewire the portion of wiring on the engine harness. this worked for two days and the engine light came back on again. i was told by the dealer to bring it back in and they would contact chrsler again. on the fourth attempt to fix the problem chrysler said to replace the power control module. the dealer installed the module and the car seamed to be fixed. unfortunatly the problem reappeared two weeks later. i have since given up on chrysler fixing the problem and my engine lite continues to go off and on at least 5 days a week. the problem that i have with this is the fact that if something happens to the engine internally i won't know that there is a problem because the engine lite is already on. i am fed up with this car and the lack of support that chrysler has shown during this time frame. they were more that happy to sell me the product but when something went wrong with the product they won't back up their five star dealers ( ha! ha!) any feed back would be greatly appreciated. thanks, kendall . *ak

2001 chrysler concorde with approximately 22,000 miles. the engine sieze and ceased to function while i was driving with my three children down interstate hyw. i had very littlwe control over my vehicle when this occurred. the engine has always gotten extremely hot during use even on short trips. chrysler has told me that i did not change the oil frquently enough which caused the engine failure. i think something is inherintly wrong with the engine as it gets extremely hot even after short trips. in fact, the hood of the car gets so hot it can actually burn you when you touch it. i have since learned that this problem occurs with many chrysler concordes and chrysler obviously knows a problem exists that could endanger the lives of consumers.

This crash resulted in no airbag deployment even with $7000 damage in the front end of vehicle..the impact was square center of the car and i was told by the adjuster and body shop that the bags should have deployed..i also believe the air bags should have deployed..this was reported to the manufacturer and they did come and check the car and sent us a letter , telling me that everything was ok with the air bag system..i do have excess to pictures of the front end from the body shop and adjuster..this seems to be a problem that needs some attention from someone besides the manufacturer.if you can assist with this matter i thank you in advance.i recieved a neck injury from this incident and i am still seeing a doctor at this time. *ak

Based on the low failure rate, the absence of failures over the past year, the absence of injuries, and odi's field investigation of incident vehicles, a safety-related defect trend has not been identified at this time.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists.the agency will take further action if warranted by the circumstances. see attached report for additional information.
