Oil sludge caused engine failure a year ago. Saab USA rejected out of hand without investigation and attempted to induce owner to make expensive repairs with implied guarantee of reimbursemet. After threats of lawsuit offered less than half of repair costs.

I\’m experiencing problems with my 1999 Saab 9-5 SE 2.3 liter, 4 cyl. engine car. The car is at 70K miles and 5.5 years into warranty and already I\’m having to replace the turbo, the water pump, and the rear main seal is leaking oil like crazy, causing a thick, white, noxious smoke to come out of the tailpipe. The cost for repairs for these items runs into the thousands of dollars. I have asked for at least 4 estimates/opinions and almost all of them said I might well need a new engine. The car started smoking only after I took it into the dealer and they did an oil change and (without my authorization) also flushed my engine. From the little I\’ve read about this topic, it\’s my understanding that, despite any inefficiencies the car may have been experiencing prior to the engine flush, the flush causes the sludge to actually lump up into large particles, causing potentially even greater damage/problems to the engine/turbo. This alone may be an issue to be discussed. In a nutshell, I\’ve contacted Saab and they have refused to assist, despite my having provided them with a complete record of factory-recommended and timely maintenance on the vehicle. Also, I just learned that as of Mar. 3, 2005, Saab has issued an extended warranty on engine related issues for cars under 8 years.

Engine failed while driving to a wedding in ME. The last oil change was done in June 2007 by a local garage in Marblehead, MA @ 130K Most of oil changes were done by myself. I am a mechanical engineer and well qualified in car maintanence. I owned and drived SAABs for 25 years, this is my 3rd SAAB and I think the last one based on poor quality of the car and arrogance from the SAAB dealers and GM corp. I am out of pocket $300.00 in towing charges and SAAB does not want to autorise the dealer to look at the car there for the dealer wants me to pay $90.00 to look at the car and tald the SAAB dealer in Falmouth ME, that they would not pay a dime if I will not provide receips for all oil changes…There is no question in my mind that the engine failed due to a design issue and SAAB sent me a letter in 2005 that there is an engine issue and I may have an engine failure…All they done so far is lip service, when it comes to the real issue SAAb / GM would not do anything to help…

Car threw a rod on I-85 near Atlanta Airport. Towed to Jim Ellis Saab in Chamblee. Absolutely NO PREVIOUS WARNING SIGNS (no oil pressure light, oil on garage floor, nothing). Regular maintenance. Car had very low mileage for age due to close proximity of work. Contacted Saab requesting repair under the extended warranty communicated in sludge letter dated June 20, 2005 and faxed all service information requested (apparently dealership couldn’t locate records but I kept in owner’s manual). Request was denied. Saab’s answer to their faulty engine was to offer $2500 customer loyalty incentive toward new car. Sent second letter to Saab General Manager requesting a review. I got a response composed and signed by his secretary (Mr. Spenchian didn’t even have the courtesy to stamp his name on it). Offered a whopping $3500 incentive this time which I again denied. Have asked for written, detailed explanation leading to denial which I have yet to receive. Was TOLD by secretary Maria Gann that car was past 8 yr. extended warranty. I have read complaint after complaint on various sites on the internet (including this one) that Saab would not take any action to help owners with sludge problem even within the extended warranty period. Seems a class action suit is the only hope for those of us who are being penalized for expecting a car to last more than 53,000 miles. Can’t believe I have a beautiful, well taken care of piece of scrap at 53,000 miles. Please help!

On February 1, 2006, I was informed by Saab USA that it refused to refund the $1,325.00 I paid to have my engine repaired when the head gasket blew due to the build-up of sludge and thus excessive pressure in the engine, a defect that is supposed to be covered under Saab
