IN THE STATES OF ALABAMA, FLORIDA, GEORGIA, NORTH AND SOUTH CAROLINA. THE ALARM WIRING HARNESS PLUGS INTO THE VEHICLE’S IGNITION SWITCH AND THE VEHICLE’S IGNITION SWITCH WIRING HARNESS PLUGS INTO THE ALARM HARNESS TO COMPLETE THE CIRCUIT. A PERCENTAGE OF THE FEMALE TERMINALS USED IN THE ALARM CONNECTOR WERE FOUND TO BE DEFECTIVE, CAUSING AN “OPEN CIRCUIT” CONDITION WHEN MATED TO THE MALE IGNITION SWITCH TERMINALS. Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE DATE CODE LABEL ON THE SECURITY SYSTEM HARNESS AND ANY DISPLAYING THE MANUFACTURING/FINAL DATE CODE WILL BE REPLACED WITH NEWLY PRODUCED HARNESSES. THE DATE CODES ARE: RAV4 – 6/24/98, 6/25/98, 6/26/98; SIENNA – 6/25/98, 6/26/98; AND AVALON – 6/30/98, 7/1/98, 8/31/98, 9/1/98, 9/2/98, AND 9/3/98.
2010-04-20	STRUCTURE	TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 1998 THROUGH 2010 SIENNA PASSENGER VEHICLES MANUFACTURED BETWEEN AUGUST 7, 1997 AND JANUARY 4, 2010, CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN OR ORIGINALLY SOLD IN CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, KENTUCKY, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WASHINGTON DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGINIA, AND WISCONSIN. THE SUBJECT VEHICLES ARE EQUIPPED WITH THE SPARE TIRE STOWED UNDER THE VEHICLE. IF THE VEHICLE IS OPERATED IN THE COLD CLIMATE REGIONS OF THE UNITED STATES WHERE ROAD SALT IS FREQUENTLY USED, WATER SPLASHED BACKWARDS WITH HIGH CONCENTRATIONS OF ROAD SALT CAN REACH THE SPARE TIRE CARRIER AND CORRODE THE SPARE TIRE CARRIER ASSEMBLY CABLE. Remedy: TOYOTA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS WITH AN INTERIM LETTER INITIALLY INSTRUCTING THEM TO BRING THEIR VEHICLE TO AUTHORIZED DEALERS TO INSPECT FOR CORROSION. I took my van to Toyota and was told that the engine needed to be replaced. I mentioned the information I found on your website and the service rep. said that they would not be able to cover the costs because they saw no evidence of sludge but the damage was caused because I let the engine run with no oil. This was of course not true. I had the van towed to an independent mechanic who removed the valve covers and showed me the sludge buildup. He confirmed the damage to the engine and said it would have to be replaced. He told me he was unaware of the Toyota extended warranty.I went back to Toyota with the estimate from the mechanic. I asked to speak to the service manager. I told him that I would not accept anything but a full repair or replacement at their cost. At first he said no, but when I showed him a copy of the extended warranty from Toyota\’s website, he said he would look into it. He mentioned that I would need to provide him with all of the receipt\’s of oil changes proving that I had followed the recommended oil change periods. As I do most minor repairs and maintenance myself, I did not have any receipts. He said he would check, but as far as he knew, I would have to pay for the repairs.My wife reminded me that before we went on vacation last year, I took the van to have the oil changed because I did not have the time to do it myself. I went to the oil change shop, had them reprint a copy of the receipt(thank God they had one) and returned to Toyota with the receipt and my vehicle maintenance log showing dates and mileages of oil changes. He made copies and said he would see what he could do, but he didn\’t fell like Toyota would cover it.As my van had all the symptoms of the sludge problem: blue smoke, very heavy oil consumption, and obvious sludge buildup just at the oil cap, I knew the problem was on their end. I left the van there and waited for their call. 10 days later I received a call from the service rep who told me my van was ready to be picked up. I asked him what the charges were and he said they were all under warranty and their would be no charges. I never received a phone call or any other information from them before about them covering the repairs. I didn\’t even sign a repair order. However, my van has a \"new\" engine in it and I didn\’t have to pay for it. I am unloading this thing just has soon as I can get an ad in the paper. I going to buy a Honda Odyssey. Thanks again for the information you had posted. It saved me at least $5000.00

I bought a 1998 Toyota Sienna at Toyota of Glen Burnie MD. At 49,000 miles (7/14/00) at the recommendation of my \"after market mechanic\" who does all maintenance on my cars, I went to the dealer because of a blue puff of smoke at engine start up and excesssive oil consumption. The service manager and a Toyota district rep (who happened to be in the shop the day I picked up the \"repaired car\") stated that I had a sludged engine which was my fault because I had not changed the oil often enough. They quoted me a price to repair in the $3000 range. I had proof the oil was changed every 4500 – 5000 miles. This fact was dismissed as not often enough because I obviously operated the van in extreme conditions. \"Extreme Conditions\" were not defined by the district rep.I choose to continue to change oil and add oil as necessary. Problem got progressively worse (adding a quart of oil every couple of weeks) until my mechanic in November 2002 (mileage 98,082) showed me an article in Car and Driver detailing the Toyota engine gel problem. I never received the letter sent directly from Toyota to owners detailing their customer satisfaction program for engine sludge. I contacted Toyota in CA (with 800 number in the article) and my Sienna engine was rebuilt by Toyota of Glen Burnie 12/27/03. In Feb 04 at 123,000 miles my engine failed (Approx 20,000 miles after the rebuild). Toyota of GB wants me to authorize $1100 to determine why the engine failed and Toyota USA won\’t pay for any more repairs to my vehicle under the sludge program. Toyota USA requires confirmation of sludge to even consider repairing it again. The dealer won\’t find sludge because I\’ve changed the engine oil often enough. I also can\’t justify the expense with the only committmemnt from Toyota USA being that they will consider repairing it again, no guarantee. I have since donated the vehicle to charity because I refuse to spend any more money on it.Toyota should have replaced my engine originally instead of rebuilding it. Also, my mechanic reviewed the parts list for the rebuild and was amazed that Toyota reused a number of old parts including the old connecting rod bearings. In his opinion Toyota did an incomplete rebuild. I contend that the ultimate engine failure is a direct cause of the original sludge problem as the engine operated in \"extreme\" conditions due to inadequate lub and cooling which \"aged\" and stressed the engine at a much faster rate that normal.
