1997 JEEP Wrangler

The safety belt lock “female section” is encased in plastic. On occation, the other portion of the safety belt lock, “male section” (blade portion) will jam itself between the “female section” locking devise and the plastic cover. The driver and/or passenger belives the safety belts are properly locked when in fact they are not. A slight pull on the belt will cause it to retrack. A number of times I have had this occur and driven many miles only to discover that the belt was never properly locked. I mentioned this to the dealer who acknowledged the problem but wanted $300+ to fix. I believe it’s a major safety problem and the vehicle should be recalled and the problem rectified. This problem may still be occurring to this day on the new models.

When driving my jeep over 50MPH on even a slightly bumpy road (including Freeways), the vehicle starts to shake uncontrollably, and I have to pull over and stop. This has been going on for over a year, and despite trying to fix the problem, nothing has worked so far. It is incredibly dangerous, and I have talked to many other jeep owners who are going throuh the same thing/

Vehicle was washed and parked. Vehicle starter shorted out and vehicle went through flower beds, a chain link fence and hit a tree in the back yard. Starter is burnt, wires to starter burnt. Property damage and damage to right fender of vehicle, starter and wiring.

The second tranmisiion problem is currently broke and has not been repaired but every time the differiential goes out the tranmission follows shortly after. The differiential has a history of leaking even when i first rolled it off the lot. When the differiential breaks it is very violent and when the last time occured it made me lose control of the vechicle. Like riding a bull ride is as close of a description as possible, it broke my seat the second time.The differiential broke a year apart.

MANIFOLD BROKE. HEARD THAT WAS A DEFECT IN JEEPS OF MY MODEL AND YEAR. HAD TO HAVE MANIFOLD WELDED. SORT OF A TEMPORARY REPAIR PEOPLE SAY IT WILL NOT HOLD. IS THIS A DEFECT THAT HAS BEEN RECALLED?

I bought this 1997 Jeep Wrangler from a used car dealer in June 2002 with a limited warranty and was told the vehicle pased inspection and had no problems. Since then I have had to have the wiring harness repaired, the fuel pump replaced, the transmission replaced, it has a faulty fuel gauge reading, the intake and exhaust manifold need to be replaced and now the steering linkage or stabilizer bars are faulty.

Hello, We have a black paint job. We Know this part is not a safety feature , but by Aug. ,Sept. the paint will be pilling off!!! Cracking really bad!!! We are the original owners. Have had old AMC Jeeps , never any problems !! Rust maybe because we had our 82 jeep from the very beginning. The other problem we have is the check engine light comes on when the fuel changes in Pgh. per season!!! Now there is a clunk in the rear housing, with our 4-wheel drive we have limited slip. We are thinking of selling by Oct. ,Jeep better be wary of lost sales.

Difficulty having airbag control module repaired under recall due to a problem with the dealer. (97v-080)

Air bag control module failed.

Fuel guache govea inaccurate reading and drops to empty when the tank is half full. contacted the local jeep dealer twice on having this part replaced and each time they tell me they will call me back but they have not.

My frame is rotting from the inside out. the rear trailing arm mounts are welded to the frame and the frame rotted through from the inside out. the vehicle will not pass the required saftey inspection. i started looking for a way to repair/replace the frame and found that this is a common problem. the cost of repair will exceed the value of the vehicle. the date i have entered is the date the problem was found.

Frame is rusting through at the upward bend towards the rear tires on both sides. issue is constantly reported online, in forums, with endless numbers of pictures. this is a serious safety concern as it compromises frame integrity. this issue is usually noticeable from the outside but in my case it is rusting from the inside out so if i hadn't caught it i would be in danger.

The rear of the frame can rust through due to lack of drain holes to let water and debris out causing the rear control arms to separate from the frame.

I experienced sudden acceleration when at a complete stop with foot on break. throttle went very high and propelled car forwarded even when pushing the breaks penal down as hard as i could. there is no way i pushed down on the wrong pedal. the breaks could not hold the car stopped. this is extremely dangerous!

After hitting bumps in the road the steering seems like it wobbles entire vehicle.

Right after i bought the jeep i started having problems but when i called the owner he said its a buy as is, no warranty, he didn't offer to help with anything and being disabled i had no other choice but to get engine fixed, transmission, clutch, the entire electric system, no ac, no heat or defrost either all these things i fixed but now again in 2020 i still have no heat, no defrost, jeep is in yard not running and i still owe right at 900 on the jeep, the owner has been very rude, made threats, and now not taking my final 3 pymts on jeep, never been late, ever!!!! he runs a shady buy here pay here lot and i have a top mechanic that left his business to vouch for the odometer tampering as well as having the mechanic to fix all the lights on panel that showed engine running hot, he told the mechanic to fix it or he was not getting his pay check, i have the mechanics statement and he will testify in person. i have several employees that have since quite to vouch he sold lemons, and salvaged cars. he lost his dmv license but still continues to fraud people.

Tl* the contact owns a 1997 jeep wrangler. the contact received a recall notification for nhtsa campaign number: 97v080000 (air bags). the air bag warning indicator illuminated and the contact was concerned that the air bag might deploy without warning. the vehicle was taken to ganley village chrysler dodge jeep ram fiat (2115 mentor ave, painesville, oh 44077, (440) 354-4358) where it was diagnosed, but the part was not available for the repair. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 196,000. parts distribution disconnect.

Tl* the contact owns a 1997 jeep wrangler. while inspecting the vehicle, the contact noticed that the wheel well was visibly corroded. the vehicle was taken to manahawkin chrysler dodge jeep ram (500 new jersey 72 west, manahawkin, nj 08050) where it was diagnosed that the frame was rusted. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that the contact would be responsible for the repair cost. the failure mileage was 63,000.

I have owned this vehicle since it was brand new. it has been garage kept for approx. 20 of its 21yrs. the rear frame where the trailing arms are attached to the brackets rusted out. the driver side trailing arms were almost ready to separate from the frame due to the frame rusting from the inside out. i had to cut out the section and replace it with a safe t cap patch. cutting open the frame showed extensive rust on the inside of the frame. i checked my passenger side luckily not as bad as the driver side but will have to be replaced because it does have signs of rusting from the inside out in the exact same place. after doing some research it appears this is a common problem for the jeep tj's. jeep cut several holes in the sides of the frame that allowed water and debris access to the inside of the frame rail but did not put ant drain holes in the bottom of the frame to allow the water/debris to escape.

The fuel tank skid plate is rotted out and the tank is in danger of falling.

I have taken care of this jeep covering every speck of rust as soon as i seen it and today while cleaning the underside of the jeep i found a rust hole in the frame. from the outside it looks brand new. after examination i found the entire frame has rusted out form the inside out and was full of chunks of metal. i believe this to be a massive safety hazard that jeep designed a frame that holds water and salt and will rust out without the owner even knowing how dangerous it is to drive the vehicle.

Bought a jeep wrangler and found two outstanding recalls #97v-808 and 974-194.the later one they found parts for . the airbag module they say the part is discontinued and they can't address the recall due to part unavailable. mopar says there are parts available ??

The frame is rusting around the rear control arm mounts , i have seen others rust in the same place in person and on the internet. there are even companies that make repairs for this problem like safe-t-cap. the rust on mine is bad enough that it will not pass state inspection without being repaired.

When cold, jeep starts and runs fine. after engine warms up, oil pressure would drop and jeep would almost die. if i shut it off and try to restart while still warm, jeep would have a hard time starting and if it did start, it would idle extremely rough and barely accelerate. once i got speed up, it ran fine until i stopped at a red light and it would act like it was going to die and the oil pressure gauge would bottom out. dealer put manual gauges on it and determined it was the oil sending unit. oil pressure now holds at 20 when at idle. the issue with the rough idle and loss of power still persists after the engine warms up. after reading all of the complaints, this seems to be a recurring issue with this model. really don't want to waste money trying to guess at what is the issue. as many people that there are having similar issues, jeep should stand behind their product and issue a recall. very disappointed.

Noticed wobble underneath while driving. inspected underneath and noticed light showing between transfer case skid plate and frame (should be tight) and bolt hanging down. took into shop and lower mid frame on both sides is completely rusted through allowing skid plate bolts to fall out with nuts still attached. skid plate also serves as transfer case mount and when it drops the driveshaft wobbles. ultimately if it had completely let go on the highway the rear driveshaft would have locked up and locked the rear wheels causing uncontrolled skid, or the driveshaft would break causing danger to the passengers.

Driving down the road the rear upper control arm brackets separated from the frame as a result of the frame corroding from the inside out. this caused the rear brake line to brake draining the master cylinder. *tr

Frame was rotted through from control arm towards the back of the vehicle. the vehicle braking ability became difficult and hard to steer. *tr

While driving my jeep on a public road going about 45, the vehicle began to shake uncontrollably. i had to pull over and stop the vehicle in order for the shaking to stop. it was incredibly dangerous, and i was lucky that i wasn't involved in an accident. *tr

The frame is rotting away, the frame rot clearly started many years ago. the rust is quite bad and will not stop. in an accident, the body could possibly fly off the frame possibly being fatal. the frame is rusting from control arm brackets to body mounts all of which can lead to very dangerous situations. *tr

For the past 15 years we have been proud owners of a 1997 jeep wrangler. in1998, we retired to cape cod, ma. over the time we have owned our jeep, it has been kept in immaculate condition; the vehicle has been garage kept, hand washed weekly, and never taken off-road. the finish is near perfect and all regular service has been performed. currently the mileage is 91,000 miles. at our last service appointment we learned of a major issue with the vehicle's frame. it had rusted through in multiple locations from the inside out. the estimated cost to repair the frame is $5,000 from our local dealer, premier jeep, in hyannis ma. our mechanic advised that the frame can be repaired by welding 6 new sections into place at an approximate cost of $2700. needless to say, we are dismayed. we conducted research to see why this problem occurred despite our upkeep regimen. apparently, water is known to enter the frame and not properly drain due to it is design. we contacted chrysler corporate who asked us to have the vehicles good condition confirmed by our local jeep dealer which we did. chrysler offered no further assistance. we are filing this report as this frame is going to loose integrity and fail based on no mishandling on our part. there is clearly a defect in the frame design which we believe the manufacturer should stand behind its product. *tr

Horn doesn't work and airbag light is on. showing that the airbags were inoperable as well. *tr

Standard steel wheels have corroded and one has started to leak air. metal remaining on other wheels have also deteriorated to a point that they may fail. no indication of failure is evident to the driver. wheel could rupture and fail causing loss of control to steering. 15x7 steel * 5 bolt on 4.5bolt pattern backspacing = 5.5 offset = +38 mm. *kb

1997 jeep wrangler tj sahara - fuel tank overflows when trying to fill up the tank. has happened more times then i can count. this is dangerous in the aspect that gas leaks all over the rear left side of the vehicle, splashes on the tire and pools on the ground. not only is it dangerous but it is an environmental hazard as well. this is not an isolated incident as my research shows this is very common with jeep years 97-01 and up. this should warrant a recall and the manufacturer should provide a fix as this is clearly a manufacture defect.. *tr

When filling gas tank, near the end, gas gushes out of tank before nozzle cuts off. has always done this. complained to dealer many times. *tr

1997 jeep wrangler exhaust manifold. consistent decrease in power, stumbling, and poor gas mileage. after a wreck i noticed the manifold was cracked. both the insurance company and the authorized jeep dealership told me it was not due to the wreck but due to fact it was a common wrangler problem, and it probably had started prior to the wreck i just hadn't noticed it. but since there is not a recall they would not fix the problem. i have fixed it. *tr

Jeep suddenly lost power on highways while going 55 mph +., causing a near accident while trying to coast through lanes of traffic to the median. after 10-15 minutes, i restarted the jeep and it ran fine, but usually about 20-50 miles, it will occur again.. very hazardous. *ak

Both external rubber side latches failed on 1997 jeep wrangler. the hood flipped up and obscured the driver's visibility. the hood was destroyed by its impact against the roof. this vehicle had been manufactured w/o the standard internal latch due to several parts changes during the manufacturing year. an internal latch could not be fitted to the mis-matched hood and grill. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated while traveling 40 mph under normal road and braking conditions, the hydraulic brakes failed without warning, almost causing an accident. the brake petal was applied to avert an accident and went to the floor. the brake lines burst causing brake fluid to leak from beneath the vehicle. the nature of failure was permanent. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic shop, who determined that the cause of the problem was due to rust on the brake line. there were no prior warnings of failure. the manufacturer was contacted and expressed they had no obligation to report this problem to the public. the vehicle was currently at the shop for further evaluation.

Dt*: the contact stated while driving at 40 mph, the fuel gauge displayed a faulty reading. the gauge indicated a quarter tank of fuel was available however the vehicle had ran out of fuel. the fuel gauge completely failed to function. the service dealer and manufacturer were notified.

My husband was rear-ended while driving the 1997 jeep wrangler. his seat collapsed backward during the impact resulting in hitting his head on the roll bar and an exaggerated flexion-extension of his neck and back as his the support (the seat) basically disappeared. *nm

Catalytic converter failure causing poor performance, excessive fuel consumption and noxious odors. replacement of converter remedied all the problems. *jb

Same as everyone else....cracked exhaust manifold on 4.0 l 6 cyl. jeep has redesigned part. i formerly worked with a 4x4 repair shop, and almost everyone that came in with a 1997-2000 (or so) jeep had same cracks. leading 4x4 magazines state "it's not if it cracks, it's when". given this many complaints, jeep should be paying to fix their flaw, not consumers. will replace with aftermarket component, not jeep's. *jb

Dt: the airbag light illuminated, and the consumer assumed that the airbag was not working. the consumer found recall information pertaining to a similar issue involving the airbag; nhtsa recall 98v046000. however, this vehicle was not included due to vin. the vehicle has not been to a dealer for repairs. no corrections have been made. the consumer talked with a dealer who said he would need the clockspring replaced, but no repairs at this time. there were no previous problems or incidents. *sc . *ak

Dt: while driving at various speeds and road conditions the front brakes locked. when the brakes lock the wheels skidded either to the right or left, but more often to the right. had been to the dealer numerous times. no repairs were done because dealer determined nothing was wrong. called chrysler, and tried to speak to an engineer and they did not wish to talk to consumer. vehicle was involved in several crashes. *ak

Dt: contact stated the hood latch was made from rubber, and when a strong wind hit the hood, it blew the hood open and caused the rubber to break that kept the hood latched. the vehicle has not been inspected or repaired yet. *ak

The seatbelts in my car do not fasten properly. there is a gap, next to the clip, that it gets stuck in due to its bad design. for fear of failure, in the event of an accident, i am replacing all of them.

Dt: on the headlight plug a grease was used and it dissolved the insulation around the wiring at the plug ,and blew the fuse. this was on both headlights. dealer had not been contacted yet. manufacturer said there were no recalls or tsbs on this, and caller filed a complaint with them, file #13888043.*ak

I am in the process of replacing the exhaust manifold on my 1997 jeep wrangler for the second time. the first one failed at approx 55k miles (out of warranty) and chrysler jeep customer service denied existence of a problem with the exhaust system, in spite of numerous reports of manifold failure on many internet automotive sites. the replacement part was supposedly redesigned to prevent recurrence of the problem, but it has now failed (mileage is now 110k, so these are 55k parts!) and must also be replaced. the mechanic stated that the replacement parts just crack in a "new spot". chrysler jeep has been totally unresponsive to what is obviously an engineering flaw in their product, and sticking their customers with the bill and any resulting safety issues! not a great way to build your customer base! *nm

The consumer was having the same problems as recall#98v046000 regarding the clockspring; the horn failed. the dealership would not repair free of charge, because the vin was not included in the recall. please provide more information. *jb

Hard brake line leading to the rear axle burst with a loss of braking. brake line, as it passed over the frame near the front wheel well was severely rusted and crumbling. when removing the line for replacement the line also broke in half at one of the clips mounted on the frame. *jb

Water leaks onto floor of passenger side of vehicle. this is a known problem, i have heard this one several times, yet haven't seen jeep do anything about it. there was nothing that happened to my truck to cause this, it rains and my passenger side floor gets soaked.*ak

While driving 55 mph vehicle suddenly lost steering control. consumer had to slam on brakes to regain steering control. vehicle was taken to a repair shop, and mechanic determined that the link on the stabilizer bar broke. the dealer was not notified.*ak the consumer feels that the connecting link is not sturdy enough and is weak due to it's size. *nm

Cracked exhaust manifold on 97 to 2000 jeep tj wranglers. missing exhaust "according" missing resulting in cracked manifold. resulting in car failing us epa smog guidelines. in search of tj owners showed many owners having this problem. *jb

I'm the original owner and sole driver of a 1997 jeep wrangler with 34,000 miles. i noticed the windshield defroster wasn't working when i drove home in a snow storm last week. fortunately, the drive was a short distance. *jb i easily determined that a plastic bell crank broke off its shaft that goes into the heater housing. i activated the defroster control to confirm that this part is the defroster bell crank. nothing has fallen down the defroster duct to jam the door and cause the break. the door moves freely when turning the shaft by hand. i believe the break happened when the defroster was actuated during max heater fan, causing max air pressure on the defroster door with max torque on its shaft. the repair estimate from my local dealer is $855. i have a strong suspicion this is a common problem and doubt if many people go to this expense to fix it. i don't want to spend this amount of money on a defect that may break again. since driving with frosted windshields creates a considerable safety hazard, i think a recall should be initiated to make this system more robust. a windshield defroster should last much longer than 34,000 miles.

Jeep skidded on wet surface. on removing rear drum i found the brake adjustment cable broken. brake shoes were ok. in my opinion the brake adjustment cable was defective. *ak

Consumer noticede a loud noise while driving and exhaust fumes coming into the vehicle. consumer took vehicle to dealer for inspection. dealer informed consumer that vehicle had multiple cracks on the exhaust manifold, and it was not covered under a recall. *ak *tc

While driving on route 93 in boston, ma on a rainy day at 6 am. i braked and swerved to avoid a car and the back brakes on 97 jeep wrangler locked and the back end came around and i it the zipper lane barrier. i ended up facing traffice in the wrong direction in the high speed lane. *ak

The vehicle used as personal auto, non recreational vehicle, in mormal city driveing conditions. speed 50 to 55 mph, i passed over a seam in the pavement, an undamped oscelation was initated in the front suspension, the car became uncontrolable at all speeds. i was alble to safely pull the vehicle to the side of the rode and stop without further incednet. investitagion of the steering components identifed exceve wear on front end tie rods and stearing damper. the car is a 97 jeep tj with 35000 miles . *ak

I am the original owner of a 1997 jeep wrangler, vin 1j4fy19s2vp52606. recently, i turned the steering wheel fully in one direction (i don't recall if it was clockwise or counterclockwise), and heard a snap somewhere in the steering wheel or steering column. the airbag warning light came on (and has been on ever since), and the horn no longer works. *ak i contacted chrysler, and was told that my particular vehicle is not involved in any of the airbag recalls for the '97 wrangler. however, it seems a bit of a coincidence that the symptoms described above match those described for the '97 wrangler nhtsa campaign id number 98v046000 - "driver's side air bag clock spring wiring harness can break when turned to the full lock turn position" *** recall notice - "a broken clockspring will also cause the horn to become inoperative. the airbag warning light will stay on if the clockspring breaks." the parts are currently still available, but i hesitate waiting very long before having this broken part replaced. *ak

The fuel tank sending unit malfunctioned causing an incorrect fuel level on the instrument panel. the gauge would read 1/4 or 1/2 when the tank was actually empty. a recall (94v106000) was issued for this problem but the consumer's vehicle was not included due to vin (safety recall 755 - fuel tank sending unit). *ak *nm

The clutch pedal quit working and the throw out bearing was broken. *ph *jb

I bought my 1997 jeep wrangler in june, 2002 from a used car dealer in baltimore, md with an as-is warranty and was told the vehicle had passed inspection and was in good condition. it had 64,000 miles on it and appeared to be good. since then i have had nothing but problems with this jeep. first the wiring harness, then the transmission, now a diagnosis to replace the intake and exhaust manifold, replaced fuel pump and has a faulty fuel gauge, and possibly the stabilizer bar or steering components. this jeep is costing me more in repairs than the actual value of it. i fear that it is unsafe and that i m facing more expenses if i keep it, but i am still making payments on it. do i have any recourse as far as lemon law protection, recalls, help!!! i don't know what to do with it. *jb

The 1997 jeep wrangler has a problem with the hvac dampers literally falling apart and becoming unusable. the plastic ends break off and the actuators will not operate them. the part has been upgraded by chrysler so they now this exists. it is a fairly expensive repair (over $700). my is done. the dealer did just fine but i have ask chrysler to make this a safety recall. the defrosters are virtually non usable when this occurs. this is a dangerour situation, driving with no defrosters. this problems has occurred on many wrangers and as my dealer said cherekee as well.

Exhaust manifold has completely failed due to severe cracking at 54,000 mi/ although this is apparently a defect in '97 jeep exhaust manifolds (based on number of problems reported on internet and manifold has been redesigned) chrysler will provide no assistance in the repair which is over $900.

I have talked to several dealerships and i have been told my jeep was not made on the right date under the recall. i have had a problem with the gage/sending unit for the last (almost) three years. i do not understand why my jeep is not covered when so many more are with the same problem. my gage sometimes does not show empty when it is and sometimes showes empty 100 miles into the full tank. i have talked to seval other jeep owners and some of them have experienced the same problem. yet, the dealerships say even though some jeeps are covered under the recall others are not. crazy!

Daimler chrysler has been unresponsive to my requests for replacement of this part under "implied warranty" or anything else, even though the car problem websites (and yours) are full of reports of exhaust manifold failure in late '90's model wranglers. they claim to have no record of the problem, even thought the part has been redesigned. the dealer here has been great, but can't do much without manufacturer support. here's hoping that with enough information on this part, customers can get some satisfaction! dt

The exhaust manifold develope 3 cracks along the reducer joint which required removal and rewelded. the cracks started before the warranty ran out, but i was not able to determine that until i noticed an increase in engine noise and exhaust fumes in the vehicle at which point the warrenty just ran out due to mileage. this component should not fail this fast.*ak

My fuel gauge shows 1/4 tank when empty- there was a safety recall in '98 (nhtsa # 97v194003 & tsb # 755) for this same problem for my year vehicle. when i contacted the dealer and also the manufacturer, i was told that this recall did not apply to my vehicle- if it is a safety problem for other vehicles of the same make/model/year, and i have the problem (obviously), theni don't understand why my vehicle was not included in the recall- thank you for allowing me to report this. *ak

Engine was very loud, so i took the vehicle to the dealer who said it was a cracked exhaust manifold. i asked if this is a problem with the wranger and was told that they were not aware of any recalls. contacted a few jeep clubs via the internet and found out that the cracking of exhaust manifolds on wranglers is very common, to the point that you're lucky if your's doesn't crack, and that the manifold has since been redesigned. i contacted the crysler customer service center on the internet to find out if there was a problem and if in fact the manifold was redesigned as i wanted to make sure that i wasn't just installing another defective exhaust manifold. there are aftermarket exhaust manifolds that carry an unlimited warranty and are in fact less expensive, unfortunately there is a heavy demand for them with a long wait. chrysler customer service would not provide me with any information, just boiler plate responses thanking me for contacting them. i ordered a new replacement exhaust manifold from the dealer, and when i went to pick it up, both the service and parts managers indicated that they new of no problems with the wrangler exhaust manifold cracking. when i asked if the manifold was redesigned, they indicated that they did not know. when i got home and opened the box containing the replacement manifold, it is obvious that the manifold was indeed redesigned! they added bellows thermal expansion joints in the first and sixth exhaust pipes. apparently the length of the manifold coupled with thermal expansion, just rips apart the manifold. while i did not have a fire in my engine compartment, as some have had, the underside of the intake manifold was black from the leaking exhaust, and was indeed evident in the car when driving. repeated contacts to the internet chrysler customer service ended with them cutting off communication. i have digital pictures of the old and the redesigned manfold. i am very disapointed in how chrysler has handled this issue.*ak

Freeze plug cracked on perfect day of 70 degrees. engine coolant lost. this happened in a parking lot - 02 mph in reverse. :) if it had happened on the freeway, permenent engine damage could have occurred due to overheating and leading to seizing.

Noticed what sounded like an exhaust leak coming from the engine compartment. i brought it to the dealer with 27k miles on it. they heard nothing. in may 2000 my mechanic mentioned a crack in the exhaust manifold. i brought it back to dealer and they said they found nothing. oct. of 2001 with 58k the noise was unbearable and three cracks visable. dealer said too bad out of warranty. if so many people are having this problem why can't something be done? by the way i will never purchase another jeep again.

Vehicle was driven directly into a small concrete post. bumber was forced back causing engine and frame damage. driver head struck windshield of vehicle. driver (complainant) was operating vehicle in a parking lot and had not placed seat belt on at time of crash. face went into windshield breaking windshield and compl. nose. it was opinion of police, dealership personnel, and others that the airbag should have deployed with such a severe front end crash. daimlerchrysler was written to and a subject met comp at dealership and took computer readings of vehicle. no analysis was given to compl except for written correspondance from daimler chrysler (a.l. gilbert -special investigator) that the vehicle did not strike the appropriate "crush" and "crunch" zones to operate airbag. we cannot believe that a front end impact into a pole with 8000 damage and the drivers face hitting and breaking the windshield is not enough of an impact to cause the airbag to deploy. we have written daimlerchrysler twice asking for the readings from the computer and no one will respond. we also still do not know if the airbag will deploy if another accident occurs with the front end. we would also be interested in other jeep owners with similar experiences as to hope and remedy a possible fatal accident because of the airbag not deploying on jeep products. *ak

Drivers seat belt comes undone at any speed every time you drive it - a few times each time you drive it, rear center mounted tail light does not work, tailgate hinges are extrremely difficult to shut causing the tailgate to not be closed properly all the time, front turn signal sometimes does not work, especially if it is wet out- dealer notified and was told that they cannot replace the socket (not a stock item), the bulbs are fine in the brake light and turn signal. *ak

On 09/07/99 as my jeep wrangler was parked in the parking lot of my bank it proceeded to roll backwards out of the parking lot, across a busy street, and into a canal ( ditch). it landed on its right side and was submersed. it took two tow trucks and 3 hours to pull it out. once at the jeep dealership they investigated to see what had happened. they came to the conclusion that it was the gear shift ( which had been in the parked position) but never gave any specifics. my insurance and i ended up paying a total of about $9,000 dollars. the repairs took a month and a half, in which my insurance paid for a rental car. when i asked about having the powertrain investigated by an outside mechanic they offered to "sell" it to me for $1000 dollars. i filed a complaint with the manufacturer shortly thereafter, and never to this day have received a reply. after reading the artcile in the newspaper today about the defects in the grand cherokees it made me think about my jeep and what happened to me. the situations with others was exactly like my experience except that no one was injured. please investigate the wranglers years 1995-1999 also for similar accidents. that jeep was my first vechicle after graduating college, i had always wanted one. it was the first and will be the last jeep i ever own after that horrible experience. i am just so thankful that no one was injured.*ak

Sirs, i have some general concerns, and could not find another area on the web site to address them: i can not understand why the same lights that mark brake use, also mark turning. when someone is tapping brakes and has turn signals on, it is unclear what their intention is. i also do not understand why we have running lights on all the time. i have to dim my rear view mirror to avoid being distracted by these lights, which defeats the purpose of these lights.*ak

The dirver's side mirror doesn't stick well, so when you drive around it easily moves, and driver can't see the cars besides him. has to look back which can be dangerous.*ak

Exhaust header developed a crack extending more than 80% of the diameter of the pipe. crack occurred adjacent to the weld which holds the connection flange to the exhaust header. this piece has since been redesigned to correct this issue. because the miles on the car (a little over 42,000) exceeded the warranty (by 6,000), it is my responsiblity for the costs of parts and labor. if jeep has redesigned the part to keep the pipe from breaking shouldn't they re-imburse or fix those that had the original design flaw?*ak

Transmission sticks trying to shift into 2nd gear, has been serviced, still is sticking while shifting especcially into 2nd gear, which sometimes grinds. dealer has changed the transmission fluid twice, 2nd time used synthetic fluid. 2nd gear feels like the syncronizer is not working properly, or very slowly. i must hold the clutch in for an extened period to allow 2nd gear to syncronize before shifting into it up and down shifting. *ak

Front brakes only stop the vehicle, back brakes do not engage. on ice, the vehicle does not stop because the auto trans keeps the rear wheels turning whle the front slides. i have attempted to have this problem corrected several times. *ak

The problem is with both driver's and front passenger's seat belts. they do not retract properly and therefore become caught in the door latch. this has caused multiple nicks and abrasions in the belt. i had spoken to the dealer about this and they replaced one of the belts while the vehicle was under warrantee. my concern is that the belt will fail in an accident. i have not followed up with the manufacturer or dealer since. i would like you to investigate and, if this is a real danger, encourage the manufacturer to correct. thank you.*ak

On 10/09/00, while starting my vehicle i heard a noise coming from the engine compartment. i had the vehicle checked at the service station that has worked on my vehicle in the past. at that time i was advised that the exhaust manifold on my jeep was missing some bolts. the mechanic advised me to contact a jeep dealership because he had read that the bolts on the jeep's exhaust manifold break. i then called a local jeep dealership and advised them of the problem. they asked me how many miles my jeep had on it and when i told him 83,000 miles, he told me that they only cover until 80,000 miles. if jeep/chrysler know this to be a problem with their jeeps, something should be done for the consumer.*ak

I am reporting that chrome side mirrors made by steelhorse for jeep wranglers are defective. this is my second pair and as soon as you reach 35-40mph or drive off in a good wind these mirrors flop down, rendering them useless. in the state of texas, rearview mirrors are required to pass inspection. this company makes a defective product and should stop doing so. also, there is no way to make adjustments to these mirrors to tighten them up so the wind won't blow them over. *ak

The shift stick popped out of its fixed location. i believe this could be a hazardous problem, luckily it happened when i brought my vehicle to a stop. for further reference- this vehicle is adult driven by myself only and is never taken off road. i purchased it with 31k miles. after removing the shifter boot, we noticed that there is no bolt or any other type of feature that actually secures the shifter in its location. i would be than happy to answer any other questions regarding this, to prevent a serious accidents transpiring from this defect. thank you.

Exhaust manifold had to be replaced. there were several large cracks, luckily the problem was caught before it broke off. i still have the part if someone would like to examine it. i contacted chrysler by phone numerous times and also sent a letter with photos of the failed part. they said it's not their problem. i talked with two mechanics who told me the part was probably defective since the jeep was less than three years old at the time. i'm not sure when it actually started to fail, but a mechanic noticed it in august 1999 and that's when i had it repaired.

Catalytic converter went prior to30,000 miles, had to be replaced ! gasket cracked at only 37.500 miles, leaking water into engine, had to be replaced. car has only 37.500 highway miles !!!

I have only included the one date i can remember that jeep was in the repair shop. but, to this date, after jeep warms up and then is shut off for approx 20 minutes, it hesitates on acceleration. dealer said couldnt duplicate problem. oil gauge dropped to zero, then engine knocked & i shut off. dealer said oil pressure ok, could not duplicate prob. it still drops below 20 sometimes, but not zero again. i have had manifold bolts replaced twice and catalytic converter replaced once. water leaks on passenger side & drivers seat belt gets caught in door latch.

The fuel sending unit leaked and was replaced 03/1998, the vehicle was hard to start and the fuel sending unit was replaced 5/98 the fuel sending unit was recalled and replaced 8/98 fuel leaked after recall work and had to be replaced again. ever since the fuel guage reads 1/4 less fuel than is actually in the fuel tank

Dealer said no warrenty coverage for manifold due to mileage and age. called chrysler help line and told maybe cold water or rain got on it and agreed i should have bought extended warrenty. why isn't the manifold covered under the emission control warrenty. what is more important then getting the exhaust gas to the converter? instead it goes to the air and creates a safety problem if it gets in the passenger compartment. i see your data bank has other manifold failures alredy and service notices of head bolt maifold issues. looks like a mfg. defect since these vehicles are so young. the fuel pump was fixed under warrenty, the car would't start right. the power steering unit continues to leak slowly and the dealer suggest a seal leaking but i have to pay to fix. great car!

Whenever my 97 jeep wrangler's engine is sufficiently warmed up, the oil pressure drops to under 20 psi. i have brought it to the dealer. they said it was the oil pressure sensor. when they claiimed to have fixed it, no more than a few weeks later, it started happening again. this time i tried to call them any left messages with the manager of the servive depatment . i was never contacted back about the problem. with my works schedule, it is hard for me to bring my car in all the time. also with reports i read dealing with similar problems, i would like to rectify this problem asap.

Seat belt catches on driver's door latch 9 out 0f 10 times. seat belt is getting a hole in it. leak has been fixed 15 times and it still leaks on passenger's feet. damage is occurring to interior of jeep and anything left on the floor gets wet. i was told( dot number: ? tire size: 22ss/75r15 )

The exhaust manifolds bolds are made out of alluminum, which at high temp. will break. that is what has happened in this case.

The rear differential was cracked, as was the exhaust manifold. also the crank sensor harness and the tps were melted against the manifold. the dash leaked water and the brake shoes/lining and rack and pinion set needed replacing. the drivers side seatbelt would never retract and the dash lead water extensively causing the resstr-blower to go out. the radio was also broken for a couple of months

My radiator has rotted out, including part of the core,this has never happened with any vehicle i've ever owned, i've lived and driven in the same conditions for my whole life.

While driving on interstate at 65mph, front end of drive shaft fell out. luckily it did not flip vehicle. bent the drive shaft in half.

The seat belt won't retract therefore the belt gets caught in the door latch. the belt becomes frayed as a result of the damage. this is the second failure. after 4 visits to the dealer, the part was replaced on 9/9/1998 at 46,889 mi.

In a 16 month period, i have experienced 3 fuel pump failures. #1 3/3/98 at 34,622 mi. #2 7/9/98 at 43,705 mi. #3 7/3/99 at 67864 mi. this failure has occurred without warning and has left the vehicle inoperable. chrysler customer assistance has been contacted and they claim there are no known issues with the fuel pump. dealer claims otherwise. i feel vehicle is unsafe and unreliable.

Vehicle exhibits undamped shimmy of front suspension after hitting pavement irregularities at ~40-45 mph. shimmy continues until spped is reduced below that range. condition appears to be worsening. mileage at 37,000 now. dealer replaced sterring damper and pitman arm shaft seal which had little affect.

Fuel gauge continues false reading after dealer repairs. *ak

Engine harness bad in vehicle.vehicle has been to dealer for lots of problems since new.the latest is the harness problem.the vehicle has been to the dealer 4 times, and is at present time is still at dealer.they have had it going on three weeks now.no one can find the proper parts or a correct way of fixing it.i have contacted chrysler more times then i care to recall,but still the same answer that they are trying everything to fix the problem.this last time 2 wires in engine harness melted,i feel that the vehicle is unsafe and unreliable.if you can help in anyway i would greatly appreciate it,thank you james haven. *ak

Engine manifold cracked during start up on a cold morning. *ak

The problem with the exhaust is that it is making a clicking sound at startup everytime until the engine is good and warm. after the engine is warm it will usually stop. the higher the rpm's get the faster the sound is. i have been told that it is with the manifold. the second problem is the computer. the vehicle will not hold it's idle after gas is given to the engine. it wil drop then come back up and it will sometimes almost die. *ak

Water leaks to passenger side floor. *ak

At 9773 miles air bag light came on and all gauges including speedometer and tachometer showed zero. when vehicle hits bump while driving, gagues come back only to eventually read zero again. ongoing problem since july 1998 and dealer cannot fix problem. been to dealer 8 times since initial problem, and still have same problem as of april 1999. need some assistance for this problem since dealer is no help at all. everytime they fix problem, happens a couple of months later again. *ak

Vehicle involved in rollover accident. rear passenger seat came loose, struck driver in head, ejected from vehicle. should this have happened? *ak

Replaced radiator and still have leaks coming from somewhere. letters sent to head office and dealership. *ak

Contacted chrysler concerning my problems, and they stated that they cannot do anything for me. when i called about my airbags the first time, i was told i would be sent arbitration paperwork and never was. when i called back, i was told that an inspector should have gone out to look at my car before it was repaired and that it was "too late now" to do anything. i was never told that an inspector or anyone else could be involved when i first contacted chrysler. i am furious and frustrated and need help with this serious issue. *ak

In the morning the vehicle would backfire andwhen the vehicle is driven after it sits for 20 minutes. now the dealer has replaced a exhaust manifold /catalytic converter/tps sensor/air intake housing,a broken stud in the exhaust manifold to head assembly, this has been going on for the past year and i get the same reply i can't find the problem or it's in the computer. this was all taken care off, but the problem still exsists. i've talked ato a lawyer and he couldn't help me. maybe you can as this does cause a flame to come out of the intake. and now it's getting worse now it's when i'm driving down the road a 25 - 30 mph. what can i do? please help, scared to drive it might explode the engine while i'm driving with my son or girlfriend. *ak

Vehicle has anti-lock brakers on all 4-wheels. on slick roads,grass,mud, snow, front wheels lock up and you dont have any control as you cant steer. the lock is working on front brakes but not the anti. this is very dangerous and i dont drive in snoe. i have reported numerous time to dealer and chrysler. they say there is nothing wrong but service mgr almost went in ditch. last time i called chrysler the lady hung up on me.

I have e-mailed you several times and no answer. front brakes on my jeep lock up on slick road and you have no control, almost wrecked several times. anti lock brakes do not work on front. vehicle has anti-lock brakes on all four wheels. i cannot get any satisfaction from company. servioce manager drove it and almost wrecked. another mechanic drove it and said the only way that you could stop it on slick road was 4-wheel. i paid $23,900.00 for it and should be able to drive it on sllick roads. *ak

Took jeep to dealer several times had headers replaced soon after maifold exhaust faolure. radio replaced once, still doesn't stay on.

I called chrysler this a.m. and the girl hung up on me she said that i would have to get someone else to help me. i have had my 1997 jeep wrangler, sahara to garage i dont know how many times since it was new. it has anti-lock brakes on all 4-wheels and on slick roads the front wheels lock up and you cannot steer it then. in snow, gravel, grass etc. this is a very dangerous problem. i dont think that they should hang up on me as i own dodge 1999 truck and cherokee limited all bought new.

Instrument panel: all instrument panel gauges are driven by a microprocessor, such that it tells the panel what the gauges should read. when the instrument panel cpu fails, all gauges; fuel/temp/oil/volt and tachometer, speedometer an d odometer) fail simultaneously. this is disconcerting at best, highly dangerous (say if one were on a freeway) at worst. also, transmission: the 5-speed transmission used with the 4.0l has major problems shifting into second when cold. jeep's answer for years has been "they all do that" yet they have continued to use the same transmission and have no fixed for the problem to this date. *ak

Front wheel lock up on slick road-snow-mud. i have had it to garage several times. very dangerous, one mechanic was about to wreck trying it out. other mechanic said that you could not stop it on slick road except when it was in 4-wheel. front wheels lock and you can steer. chry. finaly sent rep. in this week but he drove it in level dry field, he said that nothing was wrong with it. i dont drive it in snowy weather, will chrysler reimburse me or pay for damages if i shouild wreck?

Front brakes lock up on slick roads and then no control. i have taken it back several times. took back the other dy and the shop foreman almost went in a ditch. i dont let my wife drive as it is dangerous. it has antilock brakes on front. the shop man said that i need to get someone from factory to look at. i cannot get any satisfaction from company. i took it to another dealer the other day and he said that there was no way to stop this jeep on a slick road. i would like for some factpry person to look at it. as it is very dangerpus. i do not drive it on snowy roads as you cant stop it in 2-wheel drive. i woulappreciate your help on this matter.

Vehicle was involved in a crash. to avoid a head on collision, driver applied brakes and jeep veered to the left, making head-on impact with a bridge. after flipping several times ended up over guard rail on river bank beside a tree. driver sustained massive severe injuries and permanent disabilities. no recalls were issued until after vehicle was totaled and destroyed. airbag team was called at time of incident and stated to look at vehicle would only be a waste of their time and our money. i was shocked to find there were defects in the srs, i thank god i was not killed in this crash because of obvious defects. *ak

Oem part replaced 12/27/97; failed again 12/28/98; current mileage out of warranty. mfg installing defective parts as replacement parts should be required to replace. one year life of this part is unacceptable! not available after market vendors. trapped by chrysler.

Tranfer case failed to work properly while away from home in snow/ice storm leaving me with a vehicle that wasn't working as a 4 wheel drive. in august, the vehicle started experiencing severe hestation from stop and almost caused a serious accident when pulling into traffic

Oil pressure guage drops to zero, warning buzzer sounds. hazardous to pull over to shoulder in traffic, stop engine. dealer reports oil pressure is fine, sender unit at fault. it's been repaired 3 times, still happens. i still feel it necessary to immediately reduce speed or stop until pressure guage reads normal to protect engine. this has caused some traffic safety issues for myself and other motorists.

I was authorized by the dot to have a passenger side airbag switch put in and my dealer wont install it. could you please tell me where i could get this done?.

Electrical short started fire in the engine compartment and destroyed the entire vehicle.

I was exiting the highway and starting to slow for the merge at the end of the ramp. i was in fifth gear and downshifting into fourth, when i found i could no longer shift. the shifter got stuck in neutral. luckily there was little traffic and the light just after the merge was green or i would no have been able to pull over. i would have been stuck in the middle of the road and possibly would have caused an accident. it could have also happend on the highway with worse possibilities. the jeep has been used only as a car. no off-roading or towing. the transmission was also maintained as per manufacturer recommendation. i have that documentation if needed.

Right rear tire blowout.

Low speed blowout. i'm concerned if i will have similiar blowout at hight speed.

Driver's seat belt does not offer restraint in normal operations.

Right from shoulder harness is loose and gets caught in the door latch when the door is closed causing a hole to be torn in the webbing of the harness.

Consumer is concerned with the type of putty used on the plastic door frame. this putty is meant to keep water from flowing through a joint in the door frame. this frame is one piece and is designed to be removed. *ak

Fuel pump failed twice, causing vehicle to stall in a rain storm, almost was hit by an 18-wheeler. *ak

4-wheel drive inoperable. in addition, driver's seat belt will not retract/gas gauge failed, shows tank 1/4-1/2 full when it is actually out of gas/passenger's side door handle very tight and squeaky/abs brakes squeal loudly/automatic transmission has trouble shifting and sticks prior to releasing to next gear, and seat belt warning system buzzer sounds at times uneven and loud with a squeaking noise. *ak

Hood latches are made of rubber allowing them to give when meeting oncoming traffic. latches failed twice on windy days when meeting large vehicles on roadway.

Front seat seat belts when released rest in a position that interferes with door latches. in four out of five times when driver gets out the sea tbelt recoils to its resting position and sits halfway over the latch and door gets slammed on it. *ak

Recall repairs refused due to lack of parts.

When the brakes were applied at any speed the vehicle would pull to the left.

At speeds of 10 mph, while in neutral or first gear, the rpms drop to almost zero and vehicle stalls, but catches itself to normal. it happens, especially when accessories such heat/defroster, etc. are on. *ak

Flywheel grinds a hole in the plastic reservoir, allowing fluid to leak out, addition to spraying power steering fluid all over engine when fluid leaks onto the fan blade, replace power steering fluid reservoir, new unit worked its way loose after two weeks.

No deployment of air bags in accident.

Driver side seat belt twists, causing improper fit.

Master cylinder seal leak.

No deployment of driver's/passenger's air bags during accident resulted in one fatality and injury.

Continuos problem with car cutting out and backfiring when attempting acceleration after warming up then cooling down 20minutes

For guage problem, all dash guages intermittently drop to zero and airbag light comes on. hitting a bump or top of dashboard fixes problem. for #2, oil pressure drops to zero when idling in traffic in warm weather or after long periods of highway driving.
