1992 BUICK LeSabre

This 1992 Buick Lesabre has had multiple problems. At this point the rocker panels are rusting through and I beleive comprimising the structure of the unibody construction.

the paint is peeling off the entire auto, top, sides, trunk. the color coat is peeling off leaving the primer showing.

The A/C failed, and a small repair shop found the problem to be in the small circular shaped electronic part, perhaps an electro-magnet, attached to the compressor, which regulates the clutch of the compressor. I think most of the repair cost was actually simply the labor involved. The mechanic eventually involved another mechanic to assist, as he couldn\\\\\\\’t get the close tolerance on the setting or spacing to produce proper function. When car was returned to us the first time, even then it failed, and he repaired further at no charge. My memory says the repair part failed, though it may have been only further adjusting of tolerance/spacing of parts.Left rear door window motor failed before we purchased the used car. Owner said it didn\\\\\\\’t work for some years. I DISCUSSED IT WITH A MECHANIC FRIEND WHO STATED HE KNOWS OF FREQUENT FAILURE OF BRUSHES IN THESE GM MOTORS. Dealer will only sell a motor ($140) but not brushes for it. Though I have repeatedly disassembled motor, cleaned and gently resurfaced brushes and rotor, I have not been able to gain a permanent fix. Fortunately it is stuck closed rather than open.I replaced front brake pads first time recently. Discovered that when reinstalling the calipers, the design of that particular unit does not lend itself for easy start of caliper mounting bolts. At each bolt, getting the bolt first started was a challenge. In the process I also noted that 1 mounting bolt was different from the other 3 — a fact that caused me to wonder what difficulty some former mechanic had experienced in a prior brake job. While not a certified mechanic, I do possess the appropriate knowledge and tools for brake work, which I have always done on all my vehicles since the late 1960\\\\\\\’s. In this case, even with all the slick caliper grease present, the mounting bolts seemed not to position easily in the calipers to properly reach the starting point for rotating into their threaded locations.

Paint is peeling, I purchased this car used about 2.5 years ago. The paint started to peel within the first week. I used a garden hose to wash the car and the pressure from the hose started the paint to peel about the size of a half dollar on the door. Since then the paint has progressed to peeling from the roof, the trunk and the doors, it seems to Bubble up and then come off in pieces, I am afraid to wash the car, the rain even causes the paint to come off, it also leaves a white chalk like substance where the paint used to be,

White smoke coming from steering column. it does not smell electrical, nor is the smoking consistent first occurrence tonight. conditions were, 40 mph, parking lights on, econ/vent set at 68 and fan on auto with cruise control not engaged. smoke came from outlets where turn signals, tilt steering adjustment and retractable steering column insets. i pulled over, turned off the car, opened the hood and saw no smoke from engine compartment and smelled no other "hot" instances. the smoke from the column cessated when ignition was turned off. i restarted the car without further incident. after speaking with an engineer friend, he suggests it may be the air bag contacts and advised me to notify you immediately as a safety notification for possible recall/fire hazard. where there is smoke, there is fire and i am reporting it as such which includes unknown damage due to overheating of some sort to the driver side airbag system. *nm

Tl* the contact owns a 1992 buick lesabre. the contact noticed coolant leaking from under the vehicle. while the parking brake was engaged, the contact had to depress the brake pedal to prevent the vehicle from rolling down an incline. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign numbers: 96v015000 (power train) and 91v167000 (parking brake) however, the contact's vin was excluded. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified. the approximate failure mileage was 240,000.

1) driving on smooth pavement at 35mph, sudden and harsh thud was felt vehicle veered out of it's traffic lane, steering the vehicle was nearly impossible. operated brake to stop vehicle. 2) inspection reveals both rear engine cradle mounting bolts failed, dropping engine/transaxle onto steering column, steering gear being pulled away and nearly separated from steering column. 3) initial inspection determines vehicle minimally needs replacement of engine cradle bolts, replacement of damaged sway bar links. repairs pending. this failure is similar to recall of buickregal 1988-1991, ford taurus/merc sable 1987-1995 and others... *tr

I own a 1992 buick lesbare limited that i was driving to work on the morning jan 14 2003. the temperature was below freezeing. i was about 3 miles from home when i happened to look in the rear view mirror and noticed a lot of smoke rolling out from under my car. i immediately pull over and turned the engine off. i opened the hood and found transmission fuild all over the engine compartment. i had it towed to a gm dealership and they informed me that the transmission oil cooler lines had come loose from each other and dumped transmission fuild all over the engine. i paid for the repair and the tow bill. just recently i was doing some research on my wife's 1997 chevy s-10 blazer that was included in the dexcool class action lawsuit and found a web site on recalls that informed me that there was a recall issued for the exact problem that i had experienced. i called buick to se if they would reimburse me for my repairs. they informed me that there was not any recalls for that problem for my car. i checked your web site for recalls and found was a recall for my car if it was in one of the 27 cold states that were included in the recall (your # 96v015000) i was wondering how could you let gm off the hook for 23 states of vehicles that are not in the cold states. what would keep a car fom a non cold state being transfered to a cold state and that failure happen. your records show in jan 18 1995 that this problem caused 4 fires that were reported. the sad thing about this there are more vehicles sold in those other 23 states then in those 27 cold states. missouri is the state i live in and is further north than kentucky or parts of illinois. but where i live does not dictate where i drive. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1992 buick lesabre. the contact searched online and found nhtsa campaign id number 96v015000 (power train:automatic transmission:cooling unit and lines) and stated that her vehicle was leaking transmission fluid. the dealer stated that her vin was not included in the recall. the contact took her vehicle to the dealer and they repaired two hydraulic hose parts, four hose clamps, and replaced all the transmission oil and additional brackets. the contact paid $111 for the repair and would like to be reimbursed. the current and failure mileages were 140,000. updated 03-05-08 *bf

Tl*the contact owns a 1992 buick lesabre. while driving 15 mph, the entire subframe that holds the engine separated from the vehicle. the failure caused a crash. the contact's husband suffered moderate neck pains. the contact had no control of the steering at the time of the crash. there was a police officer on the scene, but no report was filed. the vehicle was towed to the nearest dealer. the manufacturer has not yet been notified. the failure and current mileages were 200,000.

92 buick lasabre, brakes had to be applied hard to avoid accident, however when the brakes were applied the entire front of the car became completely uncontrollable. at the same time, the brakes faded to nothing. finally had to use the emergency brake to stop the vehicle. upon inspection, the a frame holding the motor had rusted through, this caused the steering to be disabled, as well as the brake system, aside of the emergency brake as mentioned. by the grace of god, there was no involvement with any other vehicles. this is a very dangerous situation and when i see other buicks of the same model, i wonder how safe they are to be on the highway. in my case the speed was about 30 mph, if the speed would have been 55 or 60, i can only imagine what could have happened, not only to myself but also to other drivers and passengers on the roadway. this is a very dangerous condition for anyone on the roadway because of all the vehicles of this make and model that are on the roadways sometimes depending on the speed limit traveling at speeds that would make it entirely impossible to avoid a crash and possibly the death of the driver and passengers of their car but also other innocent motorists and passengers on the roadways. without close inspection,because of the location of the rust problem, one would never notice the problem until it is too late. i am a disabled deputy sheriff and would hate top see another person become disabled because of the defect that i have noted here. i believe that the design and way in which snow and ice gets jammed up in the location that i observed the rust, caused the problem to go on with out being noticed. *jb

My cars paint started pealing off and now almost the entire top of my car has no paint but a gray type surface as well as the entire roof is rusted. that's just one thing. the trunk of my car when i open it leaks the water inside as well as when it is shut. my car also will not crank after i have parked it and will require a boost to get it going now i have replaced the battery and the battery cable heads and it still does that on occasion. my car one day started making a horrible knocking grinding noise and i went to have it looked at and they told me it was the harmonic balance pulley. i went to get the part to repair my car and they said the only place to get the rubber seal is thru the dealer. it is to expensive for me to get it fixed professionals, so now i drive only when absolutely necessary and the rubber seal is almost worn down completely and when it falls off and im told it will. i will be out of a car. the roof interior has also fallen down and i have to pin it up out of the way so i can see out my back window. the rear windows do not roll down and the rear window defrost only comes on on occasion, as well as my heater only comes on when it wants to not when we turn it on. *jb

Hvac system intermittently turns on defog or defrost mode by default. also, when fan on high, sounds like it is blowing, but no change in passenger compartment air flow. all vac lines are connected properly in engine compartment. climate controls operable, but vent/airflow doors do not open/close on command when changing operations from the climate control panel. this has been the case since ownership in 2002. due to excessive dealership labor charges, i have not had it corrected as they state it is very expenseive to tear out the dash to investigate. when heat is selected, blows in defrost mode. all modes but econ/vent blow in defrost mode by default. this has happened each and every operation of this climate control function. i am reporting appx 2000 incidents. *nm

Dt: the contact owns a 1992 buick lesabre. the contact states that the air bag partially deployed in a head on collision. at 40 mph. it pushed consumer's car back two feet and engine back 4 inches. someone from buick came out and inspected vehicle, and then indicated they would not do anything about the vehicle because it was still drivable. contact stated that the air bag light illuminated. while driving sometimes consumer heard a humming noise like the air bag was going to deploy. contact pulled over and waited for the humming noises to stop. contact filed a complaint before as indicated in odi 10105027. also, consumer's aunt was in an accident with same this happened about two years ago. both fenders, hood, grill, and bumper were completely damaged. upon impact, the driver's air bag partially deployed, while passenger's air bag did not deploy. contact's aunt was the only occupant in the vehicle. she had seat belt on. the air bag warning light was not on prior to the crash. driver sustained a broken collar bone. this vehicle was used for transportation only, she still had to drive this vehicle. *ak

The fuel pump is near the gas tank or inside the gas tank. it is like placing a lighter near the gas tank. the design is poor. fuel pump is defective, and consumer is waiting for a manufacturer's response.*ak

The paint job on 1992 buicks does not last and badly chips off the base coat on the roof and the trunk. i have a 1992 lesabre and the dark blue has chipped off the roof the size of a basketball. i saw two olive green lesabres on the road today with chipping on the trunk, hood and roof. the white primer coat has good adhesive, but the base coat was not properly applied or there is a problem with compatibility between the primer and the base coat. *la

I am not complaining about a tire but about all replacement tires. i think many people would like to have a fuel efficiency rating for tires. when i bought new tires for my car, i lost 10 percent in gas mileage - i went from 22 down to 20. i might have bought different tires if i knew this beforehand.*ak

While driving vehicle engine just dropped out. vehicle just stopped suddenly. contacted tow company & driver indicated motor mounts broke. vehicle towed to dealership & mechanic indicated the "k" frame had separated. this caused a lack of steering control. motor mounts were still intact.*ak

Vehicle was parked on a hill, with the ignition turned off, gear in park, and emergency brake engaged. vehicle jumped out of gear and almost rolled down the hill. vehicle was taken to the dealership, and emergency brake lever assembly was replaced at owner's expense. *ak *ml

It had been raining in a parking lot of a department store, vehicle proceeded out of parking lot. driver's foot slipped off brake pedal, and ran head-on to a light pole. upon impact, driver's side airbag didn't deploy. had vehicle towed to a service station. due to front damage vehicle has been totaled. *ak

The driver airbag seems that it will deploy due to fact the steering wheel is "very puffy" and the horn is inoperative, if the airbag deployed unexpectly may cause a loss of vehicle control and crash. please provide further information .mjs

The 2 rear power windows would fail to operate properly. they will not go up or down once the button is pushed. took vehicle to dealer & was informed by the mechanic the power motor needed to be replaced in order to operate rear power windows. *ak

While driving about 30mph abs light came on when driver applied brakes to stop about a foot in front of a vehicle ahead. *ak

The horn will only work if it is hit with the fist once it is started.if the engine is turned off and it has been been restarted, consumer must then hit the horn with fist for the horn to work. *ak

While driving and coming to a stop vehicle will suddenly stop which may cause a crash. has to wait about 15 minutes, and then vehicle will proceed. please provide further information and vin#. *ak

Abs brakes and the dashboard sensors do not operate properly. dealer contacted, and diagnostic check was done. found three troubled codes, and faulty abs computer. problems cannot be remedied, and still exists. *ak

Computer system for the airbag system failed, causing the on & off switch to be inoperative. consumer does not have an option to have the airbag on or off. please provide further information. *ak

While driving vehicle at 30-35mph, the abs light would come on & stay. took vehicle to dealer. abs pressure modulator valve needed replacing. relay for pump & asm relays needed to be replaced also. gm provided no help with paying for repairs. *ak *ml

When the vehicle is parked on a hill and the parking brake is applied, the vehicle won't stay parked, but would roll. dealer was contacted. *ak

Consumer experiencing problem with vehicle emergency brake system. when applied the parking level assembly may release one or more teeth, reducing the cable load to the rear brakes. depending on the level of the road, the parking brakes may not hold the vehicle, and allowi it to roll. dealer/manufacturer notified, and was informed that vehicle was not under that recall. repairs will not be made unless consumer is willing to pay for repairs. *ak

Vehicle was broadsided on the right side by another vehicle after entering the intersection. the seat belts did not restrain driver, they failed to lock. *ak

Abs light came on. vehicle in dealer shop, and was informed vehicle needs a pmv valve. dealer refused to repair unless cost goes to consumer. *ak

Power window motor has failed, and the windows in the vehicle will not go up or down. the motor has been replaced twice under warranty. *ak

The gas tank leaks gas onto the engine pipe. dealer has replaced the gas tank assembly, but the problem has reoccurred. *ak

Vehicle started smoking in a parking lot, and then the vehicle caught on fire. the fire department arrived to put out fire, and the vehicle was towed home, not totalled. adjuster to investigate the problem. *ak

Engine fire: parked car in lot, attempting to turn off engine noticed flames coming from the hood/fender and grill. jumped out of car, and within seconds the entire car was engulfed in flames.cause of fire is unknown. *ak

While parked in garage the transmission cooling lines caught on fire. cause unknown. please provide details. *ak

When traveling at 35 mph and attempting to make a gradual stop the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard, causing extended stopping distance, resulting in the consumer having an accident. consumer has contacted the dealer, dealer was unable to determine the cause. please provide any further details. *ak

The brake pedal and the accelerator pedal are too close. sometimes when applying the brakes foot touches the accelerator pedal, causing the vehicle to surge forward. *ak

After driving the vehicle about 1/2 mile, at the speed of 20 mph, saw steam coming from the front of the vehicle. as driver pulled to the side of the road vehicle had no brakes. was able to pull into a shopping center and stop the vehicle. at that time the vehicle was on fire and burned up in the engine compartment. *ak

While driving the vehicle and the driver applied the brakes there were no brakes. the driver said that when she pumped the brakes 3 times there was little of brakes. dealer stated that the brakes pedal goes to the floor after two or three attempts. the motor pack valves are bad, replaced motor pack codes 61-45. also needed master cylinder to complete repairs. this is what the dealer stated in there report that this vehicle needed to be corrected. *ak

The abs warning light remains illuminated, indicating malfunction within the system. please give any further details. *ak

While driving the passenger's side door unlatched, causing the door to open, cause unknown. dealer replaced the door latch which did not remedy the problem. please give any further details. *ak

Abs problems; intermittently, when applying the brakes the pedal would go to the floor. the master cylinder/ the rear wheel cylinders and rear brake shoes were replaced in march of 96, at 62,000 miles. the master cylinder was replaced again on 10/15/97 at 73,000 miles for the same problem. *ak

Vehicle's brakes went out without warning and had to be replaced. dealer says the master cylinder was bleeding. *ak

Anti lock brake light came on; when taken to dealership was informed that the anti lock brake system would have to be replaced. *ak

Rear brakes show no wear, causing excessive wear of the front brakes shoes and pads, consumer has contacted the delaer. dealer replaced the front shoes and pads. *ak left wheel cylinder was leaking. *yh

Abs brake problems; the computer unit that controls the abs system was replaced because the abs warning light came on and would not go off, the dealer is aware of the problem. *ak *jb

Aproximately 2 inch split in driver's side airbag cover could cause airbag not deploy or deploy inadvertently. not checked by dealer. *ak

Rear brakes show no sign of wear, causing excessive wear of the front brake shoes and pads. consumer has contacted the dealer, problem has yet to be corrected. *ak

While driving at night at 60mphi vehicle cut off, all the power and lights went out. has been towed to dealer 3 times for same problem problem, is in the ignition. *ak

The motor mounts were replaced on two occasions . please describe .

Anti-lock brakes failed 3 months after warranty expired, dealers refuse to do anything. *ak

Owner has abs brakes. the brakes have extensive wear and tear and, had the brake system replaced at 20,000 miles and at 40,000 miles. dealer said that the front brakes have more wear than the rear, brakes are imbalanced. *ak

While drivng along the engine will stop without warning, doesn't matter if speed is (25) or (70) mph. this has happened (25) or (30) times since 12/2/96. happened (10) times on 1/29/97. taken to (2) different dealers and still cannot find problem. *ak

While braking, pedal went to floor, vehicle gradually came to a stop, no warning, dry weather, two occurrences. *ak

When adjusting the straps on the on my way carseat by evenflo, the adjuster bar pulls off of the back of the car seat. this happened with the first car seat we had model #4471027p1 and i contacted evenflo. i was sent a replacement set of straps which were installed and again failed. i again contacted evenflo and they sent me a new car seat (on my way model # 8450prvnv) and i have the same problem. i was told by both evenflo representatives that the seat is still safe to use, but there is obvious stress markings on the car seat from the adjuster bars being pulled off. i can no longer use the carseat because the plastic is broken and i cannot reattach the adjuster bar.*ak

The brakes will sometimes stop very high when depressed, usually after driving a short distance and stopping and then re-starting the car. after releasing pressure on the pedal, it will then depress to the normal position. it is very scary and we do not know if the car will stop although it does not seem to affect the stopping power*ak.

I have contact several buick dealerships on numerous occasions and been told everything from "i followed a chemical truck too closely" to a bad primer and paint problem that they are unwilling to make right. i finally contact general motors directly and filed a complaint with their customer service department and a case number was issued. i was instructed to go to the dealer nearest my home and have the service mgr. look at it. he did and said that i would hear from buick. i did, they sent me a letter including a certificate for $500 off the purchase of a new buick. i called them and said this was unacceptable and they just don't care. they are experts at the run-around and stalling tactics. i had finally given up when a friend sent me a consumer reports article that specifically mentioned your website and 1988-1992 buick paint problems. i found that a tsb #570502 exists specifically for 92 lesabre paint problems and need any help i can get to convince buick or gm to do the right thing. a person who spends $25,000 on a vehicle in 1992 shouldn't have to have a complete new paint job in 1999 or back in 1995 when the problem first appeared. now this is a widespread problem over neerly the entire car except the hood which was repainted due to an accident. now the roof is starting to rust and paint comes off in large flakes and when it rains or gets wet, it streaks milky colored water from whatever is under the paint. i took the car to 2 different auto body shops and both state this is an original paint defect. please help with any information you can provide!! thank you, cathy hays

I have written buick motor division twice regarding this serious defect and have been denied any assistance or satisfaction. i received the typical boiler plate letter reply stating that because my vehicle was out of warranty and because it was seven years old they felt no responsibility to replace the components responsible for the abs failure. i documented to them a five-year history of abs failures in buick le sabres and park avenues, but they did not acknowledge the problem (i didn't expect them to). i believe the nhtsa should investigate the buick's chronic abs defective components and require buick to recall their product to replace the system components to protect the driving public from this serious safety defect. for confirmation of the abs problem, i refer you to: ww.carpoint.msn.com/vip/reliabilitysummary/buick/lesabre.*ak

We received a recall notice concerning transmission cooling unit and lines, and had it replaced by a buick dealer, but it seems to still be leaking. recall 96v-015.002. *ak
