My Dodge grand caravan is losing it’s paint. It is bubbling then flaking off. I had to relace the sterio system due to cassette failure and the fuel system is an ongoing problem since I purchased the car in March of 2005. I have replaced the fuel pump twice and am having problems again. I love the car but with the problems that are exhibiting I will not purchase another chrysler product.

Back suspension dead, transmission broke 3 times(1995,1999,2003), back viper broke since bought from previous owner, and abs brake sensor and pump/master-abs failed last December.

Around August 4, 2003, my Dodge Grand Caravan suddenly locked in second gear. I have replaced the filter and the transmission fluid. This did not fix the transmission. While asking friends if they knew any to fix the problem before I take it to a shop to be fixed, one of them print me the information about the Chrysler Ultradrive transmission report that is on your web site. I have got to my local Dodge dealer and they said that they have never heard of Ultradrive transmission problem or recall. I showed the dealer the information that I printed from the web site. Dodge said that I would need to call Chrysler. I have called Chrysler Customer Relations about the Ultradrive transmission locked in second gear. I was told that they only have 4 recalls on the van two of the recalls have been complete but to have not. The two recalls that have been done are: Liftgate Latch PN CFXR6406 and Seat Belt Buckle/anch. clip. The two recalls that have not been done are: Liftgate support washer and a Left Wiper Pivot.I then explained to the Chrysler Customer Relation that the records on they web site only shows back to 1996 per the web site information. They said that any recall would be with the vehicle for life in the system. I also asked if they had any information on the Ultradrive transmissions having a problem with the 1989 to 1991 models. The person said that they are unable to look that information up.I then explained that the information is on the Center for Auto Safety web site. The Customer Relation person said that if the information is not on the Chrysler or Dodge web sites then the information is not right. Also the Relations person said that even if there was a problem with the Ultradrive transmission that it is no longer covered under the manufactures warranty anymore.Please contact me by e-mail if you have any information that I may use to resolve the problem with the Ultradrive transmission.

One of the two lifttgate support strut anchors shearded off causing the liftgate to fall, components not repaired under recall due to vin.

Tl* the contact owns a 1991 dodge grand caravan. while driving at unknown speeds, the brake pedal was depressed, but failed to engage and traveled halfway to the floorboard. the contact stated that the brakes eventfully engaged after the brake pedal was depressed several times. in addition, the anti-lock and brake indicators were illuminated. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, but they were not equipped to service the vehicle. the mechanic referred the contact to another independent mechanic who then referred the contact to a local dealer. the vehicle was towed to glenbrook dodge chrysler jeep (100 w coliseum blvd, fort wayne, in 46805, (260) 579-4713) where it was diagnosed that the anti-lock system failed and the vehicle was in manual mode. the dealer informed the contact that parts were no longer being manufactured. the manufacturer was notified and opened case number: [xxx]. no further assistance was provided. the failure mileage was 66,000. the vin was not available. *tt information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 1991 dodge grand caravan. the contact stated that there was a failure in which the previous owner had to replace the abs hydraulic control unit. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 96v099000 (service brakes, hydraulic). the failure recurred and caused the reduced power assist to fail during braking. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer. the dealer kept the vehicle for over two weeks. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided no solution other than suggesting the part be replaced a second time by the dealer. the contact was unable to determine if the same part being replaced would prevent the failure or if the failure would recur. the approximate failure mileage was 140,000.

Nhtsa recall #96v099000, referencing abs lifetime warranty. dealer crystal chrysler center, cathedral city, california, (760) 324-4557, has failed to repair the defective abs system of this vehicle under the mandated nhtsa lifetime warranty. dealer has had this vehicle for over six months with the excuse that "diagnosis" is in process. chrysler corporation's "executive referral" customer assistance (586) 274-8177, has failed to assure customer satisfaction. abs anti-lock light remains on, pump and actuator assembly continues to fail and has created a "dead short" in the "fusible links" causing catastrophic failure in the wiring harnesses. no matter the mileage of this vehicle, i am requesting repairs to the entire abs system under the nhtsa lifetime warranty...please assist. update 9/15/15*cw updated 11/10/11.*jb

Pep boys futura plus touring se p215/70r/15ww. part#wk14cpu754. purchased set of 4 on 4/28/2004 at hampton, virginia pep boys. belt separation after 18,000 miles. half the width of the tire for approximately 8 inches circumference bulged out approximately 1 inch. happened while setting in driveway. service advisor at dealer where purchased initially denied it was a defective tire, then said that is what he had been told to say by management. manager then offered to prorate and replace with same tire, that has now been rebadged as a definity tire, at a price that it was already being sold at in sets of 4. apparently he assumed i was ignorant. now running on spare and going to buy a set of michelin x ones at costco since my experience seems to indicate these tires are defective and the manufacturer knows it and is stonewalling. *tr

I was on my way home with my four kids when i noticed a strong smell of gas. when my husband got home i had him look at it to find out it was leaking gas from the fuel rail so bad that there was standing gas on the valve cover leaking into where my spark plugs are. i contacted the place i am buying it from and they refuse to fix it, unless i pay for it. is there any recall in this problem?i see there has been many complaints same as mine. *jb

While driving approximately 30 mph consumer applied the brakes to come to a stop. when proceeding to pull off vehicle hesitated and would not move. when taken to dealer for service it was determined to be the abs not unlocking.*ak

Upon receiving a recall notice consumer took the vehicle to service dealer for repairs of abs brakes. the service dealer told the consumer that he would need to pay for a diagnostic. consumer stated there were 7 recalls on this particular vehicle. the recall specifically stated there no charge to the consumer. *ak

Failure of front left ball joint and axle. ball joint fractured and wheel came off while driving. *jb

The vehicle had no instrument panel readout. the dashboard lights came on, but the consumer was unable to tell how fast she going. *jb.

While driving,the consumer applied the brakes and a loud humming noise was heard from the front. the driver was able to drive the vehicle to the dealer for inspection. the consumer informed the mechanic a recall notice #(v96099000) regarding the abs hydraulic unit was for this vehicle. the mechanic informed the consumer that the recall was performed in july of 1997 and the remedy was not available for again. please fill in additional information.*jb

Abs brake alarm and dual pressure switch was part of the recall but the pressure switch wasn't replaced. *ph there was also a problem with the vehicle not being able to start up due to a dead battery. *mr

Consumer stated upon starting vehicle gas fumes filled the inside compartment, then gradually dissipated. *ak the fuel rail was replaced. *sc

While driving in the rain, the windshield wipers failed. *jb wipers were repaired under recall the first time, then they failed again. consumer was informed that the defective part was the crank that connected to the wipers and it wasn't covered under the recall. consumer repaired the part on their own. the slots in the crank flared out which caused it to rock and loosen the nut and fall off. *ph *nlm

The head light covers became discolored, which made it difficult to see at night. *jb *ts

Separation of fuel rails connecting u tube cuasing fuel leak onto spark plugs. gas odor in van led to discovery of problem before tragic consequences. repair shop informed us that they are seeing this problem often.

Vehicle shuts down completely from transmission. vehicle will start back up, but will not go faster than 30-40mph. before when transmission was changed vehicle wouldn't go faster than 10mph. dealer kept rebuilding transmission, and consumer had to pay out of pocket too often to repair tramnsmission again.*ak

Driver's side seatbelt will not stay buckled, inside of plastic came out with buckle.*ak

Recall 96v099000/ abs brakes. dealer refused to service vehicle due to mileage.*ak

Headlight lenses are yellowing and causing poor visibility. dealer has been notified. *ak manufactures stated the problem is due to the vehicle age and mileage. *yh

While traveling emergency spare tire straps and clamps separated from tire, causing tire to roll onto highway. replacements made at half cost. *ak *ml

Headlight covers are turning yellow. could not see in dark while driving. was causing poor visibility for the driver. took to dealership & the covers were replaced with brighter ones. *ak

While driving daughter to daycare vehicle acted like it was running out of gas. started shaking very badly. pulled over,waited a little bit, drove, and started the same problem again. contacted dealer, and was told the fuel injection needed to be cleaned. had that done by a local mechanic. problem went away for about a week. found out by the mechanic that the fuel rail had a leak which was dripping onto the engine, which could cause a fire. tried to contact manufacturer for the fuel rail, and was told that it is on back order for up to 6 months. *ak

Driver's side belt buckle failed to latch properly. had to insert latch into buckle on several occasions before it locked properly. dealer was not contacted. *ak

While driving engine stalled. then, consumer found out that camshaft was broken, and engine had to be replaced. *ak

Driver's side seat belt will not extend from the panel. dealer has been notified. please provide further informaton. *ak

Vehile parked in driveway vehicle caught fire. all the switches & control modules had melted. the wiring harness was also melted. was informed that it was an electrical short that caused the fire. the fuse had failed to blow. *ak

Windshield wipers flew off the vehicle, causing poor visibility. the dealer has been notified. windshield wipers are on back order.

Vehicle isn't going into gear properly. when putting foot on gas pedal vehicle jumps forward, and the gears shift. then vehicle cuts off without prior warning, and vehicle won't move sometimes. *ak

Side door would be sticking. it fell off the track when closing. has not been to or notified dealer as of yet. *ak

When applying the brakes pedal stiffens and vehicle will not slow down. owner has to force full body weight on pedal in order to stop vehicle. dealer has replaced the electrical relay. *ak

Abs light came on. when brakes were applied, had no brakes. pedal failed to respond. felt very hard. coasted vehicle to side of road. had vehicle towed to mechanic. informed a relay/dual function switch had to be replaced. switch acted as if it was turned off when it was on. *ak

Air bag deployed while crossing railroad tracks doing 15-20 mph. can nhtsa help or provide additional information in this matter. *ak

Abs braking system malfunctioned due to a defective pump relay dual function and a switch pressure acutator, which may resultin extended stopping distance. please provide further information. *ak

Without prior warning, there is a loss of power, and their is a fuel leakage from the fuel rails. also, there is some type of knocking noise coming from the vehicle, and engine cylinder head had to be replaced. *ak

Liftgate bolt broke, causing liftgate to fall down, and may have caused injuries. there is a recall for 1992 grand caravan, recall 97v079000, but this vehicle is not included in the recall due to vin although it has the same problem. please provide further information. *ak

Fuel injection system was leaking gas on top of engine. dealer replaced defective injectors twice, and problem has not reoccurred. *ak.et.

While driving the van cut off. it coasted to the side of the street, and when stopped driver smelled smoke. saw flames coming from underhood. rescued the children from the vehicle. phoned 911, and fire department and police came. the vehicle was towed to s & w towing lot, and there has been no informaion obtained as to the cause of the fire. *ak

While getting out of the side door of the vehicle the door fell off without inications. please provide further details. *ak

Drivers side seatbelt would not unbuckle. problem area is buckle housing mark press. *ak consumer was unable to unbuckle the seat belt, after an hour he went to the dealership and they were unable to unbuckle it so they advised him to cut it off, they could not cut it off due to liability reasons. *slc

Brake pads are corroded around the edges. winter road chemicals disintegrated brake pads. the dealer has been notified. *ak

The rear window wiper motor shorted out due to the window washer cleaner leaking into motor. the dealer has been notified. problem has not been corrected. *ak

Consumer received a recall notice on the abs system. at the time the vehicle was o.k. vehicle is over the extended warranty of 10 years and 100,00 miles. the dealer is not willing to repair the seat at their expense. *ak

Consumer went to reach for seatbelt, seatback broke, causing the seat to fall backwards. seat completly broken, will not stay up. *ak

When driving the vehicle jumps into different gears and jerks all the time. dealer has not seen. *ak

While drivingheard a noise in the steering column . then took the vehicle to the dealer and was informed that the steering wheel was broken. *ak

When applying the brakes the vehicle makes a ginding noise and excessive pressure is needed. *ak

Seat belt in middle rear becomes detached due to a faulty spring clip which snaps inside out. owner is very concerned for his safety. *ak

Ea-97-005, the rear middle seatbelt achorage does not hook on when using the seatbelt. won't protect the occupant if in an accident. *ak

The bolt that supports the strut, on the right side of the tailgate , sheared off and caused the gate to fall, hitting owner's head. the problem has not been corrected. *ak

While driving, the center seat, right seat belt anchorage release, when seat belt is in use.

The seat belt hook on the right side in the middle of the vehicle disengages from the metal floor anchor. the spring clip is not broken. consumer has not taken the vehicle to the dealer. please add further information. *ak

Ea-97-005, the vehicle rear middle right side seat belt anchorage comes loose, preventing protection to the occupant if an accident occurs. *ak

Seat belt anchorage, the middle seat right hand side the floor latch becomes unbuckled, the little clip that hooks comes apart when driving after being attached. *ak consumer states the clip is not secure.*jb

Vehicle parked in garage, house smoke alarms went off, owners discovered vehicle on fire, originating underhood. *ak *slc

Received recall notice on abs brakes, took it to dealer and he said that there was no problem on brakes, send the vehicle home and the brake light still stays on. took it back and dealer replaced the piston but the brake light is still on. (92v-030). *ak

The driver side seat belt wouldn't hold when trying to latch. *ak *slc

The back window of the hatch shattered for no apparent reason.

Original transmission was rebuilt by dealership at our expense. later, had to replace the transmission because of the same problem. chrysler would not cover any of the expenses and we have never heard if any recall work was done for transmission problems.*ak

Abs/brake light is on for more than 2 minutes, braking condition significantly decreased or vehicle won't stop.*ak

Part failure caused 4 people to be marooned on interstate hwy5 at night. *ak

Replacement transmission was purchased through chrysler and lasted only 29,000 miles before failing in washington d.c. traffic on mother's day. chrysler will not replace and are non-responsive to my requests to meet on the subject.

1. transmission solenoid body locks transmission in drive/2/1 range. (the transmission cannot be shifted to neutral, reverse or park without a great amount of force.) disconnecting the battery resets the controls and allows the gears to be changed normally for a month or so. 2. idle air control motor sticks in the open position, causing the engine to idle at a high rpm (1000 to start with, more if not replaced right away). this makes stopping the vehicle more and more difficult. *ak

I contacted nhtsa over a month ago (odi# 736341), but have heard nothing back. are you hearing me? this problem presents a high degree of danger for a fire. no safety defect listed in summary. *ak

Fuel rail severely leaks gas at non-servicable o-rings, causing a serious fire danger, when engine and fuel lines are cold.

Front headlamp plastic lenses of this model grow opaque with time and very little light is able to pass through making it very dangerous at night. the model includes years 1991 through 1995 and possibly the model previous. the lack of light at night is a road hazard both to the driver and oncoming traffic. there is possibly a defect in the type of plastic used or a reaction with the heat of the lamps with the plastic. i have never seen an clear front lense in these models which include the dodge grand caravan, caravan, plymouth grand voyager and voyager. *ak

Glass wiper won't operate on rear door (stucked up while in operation)creating visual hazards especially when backing up the vehicle during snow/rainy conditions.

Heavy gas smell. mechanic identified o-ring failures on injectors and fuel line.

Upon entering the driver's side and shutting door, the back window of the hatch shattered. *ak

Fuel rail developed leak. drips gasoline on hot engine parts. other makes/models have been recalled according to my understanding. parts are even on back order by chrysler until feb 14th at least. the parts department tells me these have been "trickling in" i guess for other makes/models/years?. but not for our particular vehicle. this seems to be a serious safety concern to me and will cost in the neighborhood of 350.00 for me to get this repaired.

Brakes got red hot with smoke as the only indication. pedal stiff at top. no brake warning light and no abs amber warning light. lost pressure down to 14.5 psi in front driver side tire. tire too hot to touch. break break//////// on older transmission failure the fol. applies. transmission seized as though it went into park. van shook violently until neutral selected on gearshift allowing me to coast to stop. second complete transmission swap out. first was at 90k miles. still have part that failed. second failure i was almost hit from behind.

No summary

While unloading groceries, hatch suddenly slammed shut due to failure (shear) of hatches right strut body anchor. my head was grazed, but am ok. plastic trim by anchor damaged. door is extremely heavy, and will not open without strut assist. a failure of this nature is extremely dangerous - what if the door (500lbs + enertia) fell on us or the kids while unloading groceries, or sitting on gate for tailgate party/drive-in? falling with the speed and force it did would act like a leg/neck/bone crushing guillotine. it is lucky that no one was hurt, but someday, some one will if this weak design is not corrected. i say it is weak because anchor diameter appears to be 1/4" which is ridiculous. 3/8" would be minimum diameter for proper design. please do something before someone gets killed. signed - brian d. lubell

The first repair we were charged with the replacement of the master cycl and the abs piston assy and we were never told it had been recalled, they charged us for 5 pints of brake fluid and all parts totalling $494.51 to complete this job. since they did not know about the recall. i really doubt they did the job correctly. the next occurrance explains the brake fluid. then approx 3 months later the brake system completely failed, they said they found a foriegn substance in the brake system, it looked like some type of grease, they said they contacted a area rep and they tested the fluid and found 20% of petrolium in the fluid. they were the only ones that have ever serviced our brake system, now they are denying all responsibility and will not honor the work they did. i talked to other chrysler dealers and they said this job only take 2 pints of brake fluid to complete this type of job. 5 pints is enough to fill the system 1 and a half times. i do not have a technical sheet from chrysler detailing the proced

The mounting bolt/stud for the dynamic tensioner broke, causing loss of serpentine belt driven accessories including the power steering pump, alternator, and water pump. the failed tensioner was a dealer-installed warranty replacement of an oem part; the oem part was replaced due to excessive belt noise on 5/25/93 with 25,915 miles on the odometer.

The sliding side door on my 19991 dodge grand caravan completely fell off while the vehicle was turning a corner. i have noted that tsm's (08-62-93; 08-21-94; and 23-06-93) had been issued describing a defect in the sliding door ajar switch (adjustment).

Liftgate latches in the subject vehicles have failed in low and moderate speed impacts resulting in occupant ejections, injuries, and fatalities.there are two failure modes associated with latch failure: fork bolt-detent lever bypass, and inertial unlatching.nhtsa analyses of chrysler and peer minivans took the form of static and dynamic crash testing, engineering evaluations, complaint and field analyses, and real world data analyses.a technical report discussing these analyses can be found in the engineering analysis technical report in the public viewing file.chrysler has advised nhtsa that it will conduct a campaign to replace the latches on all the subject vehicles.the chrysler campaign will consist of notification letters to all owners; free replacement of all latches with stronger, safer latches regardless of the age of the minivans; national advertising to promote customer awareness of the campaign; quarterly reports regarding campaign completion rates; as well as additional measures to ensure a high completion rate, above and beyond the actions that normally would be taken in a formal safety recall.these include follow up written and telephonic notifications to owners who do not bring their vehicles in for corrective action.nhtsa firmly believes that the crash performance of the latches on these minivans raises serious safety concerns, and that the campaign addresses these concerns.the chrysler corrective action will increase the strength of the liftgate latches and decrease the potential for inertial unlatching, thereby reducing the risk of crash-related openings of the liftgate and possible occupant ejection through the liftgate opening.owners of chrysler minivans will get a stronger, safer latch free of charge at the earliest possible time, without the need for further technical investigation and complex and time-consuming litigation with an uncertain outcome.based on the above, odi is closing this investigation.

After an extensive investigation and analysis, chrysler has identified the defect as a fatigue failure, origination in the heat affected region of the "projection welds" of the steering wheel "hub" to steering wheel "armature" attachment.the hub is the portion of the steering wheel assembly that connects it to the steering column shaft and is attached to the underside of the steering wheel assembly by 4 welds.if cracks develop in the heat affected region of the welds and propagate through the steering wheel armature to each of the welds, the steering wheel can separate from the hub.this is a slow progressive failure which normally occurs at high mileage.in some cases complainants have reported a looseness or wobbling of the steering wheel prior to separation.to remedy this defect, chrysler will inspect the steering wheels of the affected vehicles for cracks in the hub area.if any cracks are found, the steering wheel will be replaced.all other vehicles will have reinforcing plates installed which would prevent a steering wheel separation should cracking occur.

On may 7, 1997, chrysler filed a defect information report to recall 436,000 1992 dodge caravan/grand caravan, plymouth voyager/grand voyager and chrysler town and country vehicles to repair the liftgate supports; safety recall 97v-079.odi had investigation the rear liftgate support problem for 1991-1993 chrysler minivans in pe 96-035 and ea96-027.at the time of closing ea96-027 on may 16, 1997, a safety related defect trend had not been identified on the 1991 and 1993 models.since the closing of ea96-027, odi has received 34 complaints of rear liftgate support attaching bolt failures, including ten injuries, on the subjecet vehicles.it is recommended that a recall query be opened to determine the scope of liftgate support failures on the subject vehicles.closing note: on july 19, 1999, damilerchrysler agreed to recall 1991, 1993, and 1994 model year vehicles to remedy rear liftgate supports; safety recall 99v-213.it is recommended that rq99-004 be closed.
