Honda Adds 273,000 Vehicles to Long-Running Air Bag Recall

In its fifth action to handle the same defect, Honda announced that it would recall 273,000 vehicles for defective air-bag deployment systems, a problem that has led to the recall of nearly 2 million Hondas since 2008.
The automaker said Friday in its filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it began considering a recall expansion after learning of what it described as an “energetic deployment” of a driver’s air bag, which occurred on Aug. 1 in a vehicle not previously recalled.
In some of the affected vehicles, a driver’s air bag inflated so forcefully that it sent shards of metal into the driver.
