Before dawn on Feb. 23, Darius Williams ran his Nissan Sentra off a North Carolina interstate at 80 miles per hour. A length of guardrail pierced his door, according to the police report, driving the 24-year-old’s body into the opposite back seat.

The Center for Auto Safety today filed a petition for a defect investigation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), requesting the agency open a formal investigation into safety-related issues associated with Chrysler’s Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM).

Probe finds NHTSA moves slowly on investigation requests – 8/11/14
DETROIT — People are waiting longer than they should for an answer when they petition the government to open an investigation into what could be serious safety problems.
The Associated Press reviewed all 15 petitions filed by drivers with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration since 2010 and found the agency missed the legal deadline to grant or deny the requests 12 times. One petition from 2012 has yet to be resolved.
