Former Mitsubishi President is Arrested

TOKYO — Katsuhiko Kawasoe, the former president of scandal-plagued Mitsubishi Motors Corp., was arrested Thursday on charges related to a cover-up of auto defects suspected in a fatal accident.

Five other Mitsubishi officials, including a former president and vice president of the automaker’s truck unit, were also arrested, and police said all six were in custody.

Ford Motor Co. should pay punitive damages of $246 million in addition to nearly $123 million in compensatory damages to a Del Cerro woman paralyzed two years ago in a Ford Explorer rollover crash, a jury said yesterday.

SAN DIEGO — A jury ordered Ford Motor Co. to pay at least $122 million to a woman paralyzed in a rollover accident, the first setback in a string of lawsuits involving the Ford Explorer, the nation’s best-selling sport-utility vehicle.

Ford previously won 11 rollover lawsuits involving the Explorer, a company spokeswoman said.

TOKYO  Japan’s Mitsubishi Motors hid 26 defects in its cars from regulators for years in addition to four problems it publicized in 2000  to avoid issuing recalls for the vehicles, the company said Wednesday.

The automaker said it would immediately start recalling the affected cars, estimated at over 160,000 and most of them sold in Japan.

Toyota Fined $250,000 by NHTSA

Honda Fined $50,000 by NHTSA

On October 4, 1996, American Honda Motor Company agreed to pay a fine of $50,000 to NHTSA for failure to timely recall 3.7 million 1986-91 vehicles equipped with defective seat belt buckles made by Takata Corp.

Ford Fined $425,000 by NHTSA

On March 11, 1999, Ford Motor Company agreed to pay a civil penalty of $425,000 to NHTSA for inaccurate or incomplete responses in investigations PE92-069, PE94-034, PE94-078 and EA95-002 of  steering column and underdash fires and for failure to timely recall 7.8 million vehicles made between 1988 and 1992 for replacement of ignition switches.
