SUV’s flaw might be fire’s cause

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH Peter Romans reported that the house fire that killed his wife and two children early Sunday started in his sport-utility vehicle parked under an attached carport.

Yesterday, the state fire marshal’s office confirmed that the origin of the fire had been traced to the carport, but investigators have not determined a cause.

Huge Recall, but Many Cars Unfixed

AFTER six recalls to correct problems with millions of Ford Motor Company cruise-control switches blamed for almost 1,500 fires,the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration took an unusual step. In February, it issued a consumer advisory urging owners whose vehicles had not yet been fixed to have the switches disconnected immediately.

GM Dexcool Engine Damage Class Action

The class covers three different groups of GM vehicles which suffered from engine damage caused by the use of Dexcool engine coolant.  Repairs involving intake manifold gasket failures, engine coolant sealing issues, and sludge (a rust-like material) are covered by this proposed settlement. These repairs would likely involve parts like the intake manifold and/or manifold gaskets, throttle body gaskets, radiator cap, heater core, water pump and other parts of the cooling system.

Family of four dies in accident

A Joplin family’s trip to Dallas ended in tragedy Sunday when the car was struck by a tractor-trailer and caught fire.
Killed in the crash were Robert Hayes, 52, his wife, Melissa, 41, and sons Tyler, 15, and Colby, 14.
Sgt. Brent Crittenden of the Pryor (Okla.) Police Department said witnesses reported that the Hayes vehicle stopped about 1:15 p.m. for a traffic light at U.S. Highway 69 and Southeast 49th Street.
