Cruisers to be fitted with new safety panels

BOARDMAN Township police officers have another line of defense against injury during rear-end cruiser collisions.
The department bought 10 vehicular fire protection systems, called FIRE Panels, to install over the gas tanks of the Ford Crown Victoria cruisers. Each panel, a polymer shell containing a fire suppression powder, costs $495. The money is coming from the department’s Law Enforcement Trust Fund, cash seized during drug and other investigations.

The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966 requires manufacturers to remedy vehicles with safety defects or failures to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard(s). 49 U.S.C, ยง 30120 The Act contemplates that some safety defects or standard noncompliances may be too difficult or too expensive to repair and gives the manufacturer the option of refunding the purchase price or replacing the vehicle as follows.

Airbags can significantly reduce the chance of death or injury in an accident. Defective airbags, however, can cause serious harm to drivers. The Center for Auto Safety is working to ensure that airbags are properly engineered and truly protect occupants in collisions.

SUV’s flaw might be fire’s cause

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH Peter Romans reported that the house fire that killed his wife and two children early Sunday started in his sport-utility vehicle parked under an attached carport.
Yesterday, the state fire marshal’s office confirmed that the origin of the fire had been traced to the carport, but investigators have not determined a cause.

Huge Recall, but Many Cars Unfixed

AFTER six recalls to correct problems with millions of Ford Motor Company cruise-control switches blamed for almost 1,500 fires,the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration took an unusual step.
