Dan Becker, director of the Safe Climate Campaign, an environmental group, said the new standards would lead to a 30 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from cars and trucks by 2016.
“This is the biggest single step we can take to lower global warming pollution,” Becker said.

Environmentalists are pushing for the greatest gains in fuel efficiency possible, a reasonable goal given that the program could cost taxpayers several billion dollars or more. As Safe Climate Campaign’s Dan Becker recently told The Hill newspaper, "The American people are subsidizing the auto industry, and we need to get some equity for that in the form of better environmental protection and less addiction to foreign oil."

CAS Petitions NHTSA Over Cell Phone Use
The Center for Auto Safety (CAS) petitions the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to take action to restrict the availability of two-way communication features through in-vehicle telematic systems while a vehicle is in motion. The purpose of this petition is to make the driving environment safer by reducing the availability of devices that have been proven to be traffic hazards.
