2017 SUBARU Outback

Walked out of staters bros and the windshield cracked from the very bottom center and traveled up 10 inches and over to drivers side 16 inches.up on its own while i was in the store. no crack prior to leaving my vehicle 25 minutes earlier.

Windshield cracked spontaneously. am aware there have been numerous complaints if similar problems on year and model, 2017 subaru outback. vehicle is garaged and i've noted crack is "growing." local dealer claims to be unaware of a broader issue involving many other vehicle owners describing same problem.

Sometimes the battery goes dead for no reason. this has happened multiple times in the last 2 years, with the most recent event occurring today (may 10, 2021). it could occur after i haven’t driven it for a day or in the midst of a road trip after i’ve stopped for lunch and it won’t restart. i have replaced the battery 2 times since purchasing my car (used) in 2019.

We have experienced multiple, ongoing battery drain incidents, replacing the battery twice in one year (most recently). we are left stranded repeatedly and must jump the car for it to start. i understand this is an ongoing issue with this model and others. the incidents happen seemingly randomly. it is working fine, then you go back to get in it and it won't start. sometimes, when you are attempting to start it, the back hatch will make a sound/motion. we have been stranded more times than i can count! after 4 years of this, we are beyond frustrated. i do not feel safe on the road by myself. most owners have taken to keeping a battery jumper with them at all times. ridiculous.

My battery has seemed weak for over a year. on a routine service, i had asked subaru of santa fe to inspect my battery. it checked out as good. yet, every time i started the car, it would seem like the starter was laboring with a drained battery. of late i have had to jumpstart the car a few times, even. i took it for inspection today to auto zone, to see if i needed a new battery. they checked it and said the battery was fine and did not need replacement. i looked up the internet to see if others had similar problems. sure enough, i discovered that there is a legal suite regarding an identical issue for the same year mske and model car as mine. the battery has never died while the car is in operation or moving, but only when the car is started. this could be a safety issue if the vehicle is stranded in a remote or unsafe location. to my knowledge,

My new battery was drained to a point the vehicle would not start. i messaged some bible study friends and one was going to come over and jump my vehicle. while waiting i put the car in neutral and pushed it out of my garage into the driveway. the driveway is on a steep slope. once in the driveway i tried putting the car into park, it would not go into park. in fact it would only go into drive which did not stop the vehicle from rolling backwards. i tried the emergency brake but it is electrically operated and did not work. the brakes were very hard to hold since the hydraulics were not kicking in, same with the power steering. i am a big strong guy so i wrestled the car to turn it diagonally in the driveway as it rolled backwards, trying to prevent it from going into the street and flying into someone's house or vehicle. once diagonal in the driveway i threw a padlock under the front tire from the drivers seat with my foot on the brake to prevent it from rolling back. at this point it was barely held but stationary so i got out, chalked the wheels with 2x4's until by bible study friends came over and jumped my car. i did not have my cell phone and no one else was around to help me. i litterally thought i was going to have to just let my car roll down into the street and let it go because i had no other options. i called subaru of america and they directed me to a youtube video that shows once the battery completely dies, there is a special tool you need in order to get the car in and out of park. but it doesn't tell you that if the car won't start and there is enough power to get it into reverse, don't do it without the tool. what if this happened in the mountains or san francisco or any hilly or mountainous location? i believe this is a high potential for life threating injury or loss of property. e-brakes should not be electric in my opinion.

The car drains battery rapidly overnight. the idle current is about 2 amps which is abnormal

The battery is prematurely draining and this has left us stranded and requiring a jump start. this is a safety issue for my family. the oem batter failed after 18 months. the new battery (with a 5 year warranty) has now failed after another 14 months. this is not due to leaving a light on or a door open. the vehicle is not being left parked for long periods of time. this is a daily driver vehicle.

The data control module failed after only 30,000 miles. it's a 2017 subaru outback and because of not driving last year (2020), the 3 year warranty was no longer in effect. we are paying $1500, for a failed part (data control module) that caused two consecutive batteries to drain. the car will not start without jumping it.

This subaru outback windshield cracked for almost no reason. we bought the vehicle 2/28/21 with 19700 miles. while driving from 4-5pm on 5/7 i did not notice any audible rock hits or impacts on the windshield. we were receiving rain in michigan and the temperature was dropping quickly. i parked the vehicle at 5pm, and there were no cracks in the windshield at that point. when i went to drive the vehicle at 11pm that night, i noticed what i thought was debris on the windshield (i parked under a tree), but i didn't realize this was a crack developing. i drove it from 11-11:45. when i parked the vehicle at almost midnight on 5/7 i didn't realize this crack was getting larger. on 5/8, i went to use the vehicle at about noon, and the crack was now 10-12" long and within the drivers line of sight. i called subaru since the vehicle only has 23,000 miles, and they said to call my insurance. now i have to pay for a windshield on a nearly new vehicle from a crack that seemingly appeared out of nowhere. most of the driving was on a clean and new freeway, no dirt roads. in the second photo you can see what is maybe a very small rock chip, but i have numerous similar chips on two other vehicles that have not developed into a crack, especially so quickly. i think this is a defective windshield on this new subaru. i believe this should be replaced under warranty.

Battery dies..had new one installed this week, same problem. no recall? cant use car

>>>this information is in addition to the previously filed nhtsa safety issue id 11415232 <<< in my previous filing, i did forget to include another issue that i believe is also associated with the electrical problems i have experienced with my 2017 outback 2.5i touring vehicle. so, along with all of the failures experienced and discussed in filing #11415232, a handful of times, i have also experienced that the front passenger-side window would not work when attempting to open or close it from the driver-side control. but i do want to point out that the window would open and close when i used the window controller located on the passenger side door. thank you for allowing me to add-on to my previous complaint.

I believe all of the following circumstances to be caused by an electrical problem: dec.31, 2020: car hesitates to start. it never turns over so it does not ever start. we install new battery & car starts. mid-jan.2021: car won't start from push start, but does start when i use my remote start key fob. after that, car starts with push start. feb.-april 2021: car has a several times when it hestitates to start, but ultimately it does start. may 1-3 2021: car hesitates to start, but ultimately starts. may 4-5 2021: car not only hesitates to start, but now i have all kinds of lights lit up on my dash, including check engine, eyesight, x-mode light is flashing, and several others that i cannot get to turn off. in all instances, vehicle was stationary and turned off. i have photos & video but can't seem to reduce file size to required 5mb. side note: unless i am at work or running errands, my car is always in the garage.

Car battery will not hold a charge. i had to replace the original battery twice now. original battery died march, 2019 — i had my mechanic replace that with a new battery (battery replacement 1). battery replacement 1 died february, 2020; battery replacement 2 (another new battery) was installed. battery replacement 2 died november, 2020; battery replacement 3 (another new battery) was installed by subaru.

I have had three sizable cracks in my windshield since 2017, with the most recent fairly large which will probably cause me to have to replace the entire windshield. the other two cracks have been repaired at my expense. the vehicle was in motion in all cases, but there was no discernible danger ( ie. following a truck) . they all occurred on two lane roads traveling at or under the speed limit.

Battery failure after 6 months under normal use. no periods of leaving headlights on overnight, etc. had just driven about 90 minutes, turned car off to run into a shop, returned and car wouldn’t even crank. aaa tested it and the alternator. alternator was “good” but battery reported “fail”.

Something (electrical issue?) is draining the car battery and needs a jump if not driven within a day or two. we replaced the battery twice within a year thinking we had a defective battery, but problem still persists. we took the car to a mechanic thinking it could be the alternator, but that was not the issue.

The battery life was terrible and it finally died on a trip even though it was only two years old. there seems to be a battery drain issue on these cars that contributes to the problem.

Battery goes dead after a couple of days of no use

With all items off the electrical system in the vehicle drains the battery in a short time. i have installed a switch on the battery to open circuit so the battery doesn't drain while parked. this prevents me from being stranded again when the vehicle is parked.when i return to the vehicle i switch back to closed battery circuit. i now can start the car and i am not stranded. this proves to me that there is a problem with the electrical system drawing too much current when vehicle is parked with no items on in the vehicle. if you want i will provide the current flow when vehicle is off and parked. this is a real problem and i will provide any information that you want. i appreciate your action on this problem.

Battery drains prematurely? i've had to have it jump started 3 times in the past couple weeks. had it checked out & battery, alternator, and starter are fine. battery just dead in the driveway in the morning. roadside assist guy recommended filing a report because he'd heard others had had problems, too, possibly with back hatch not closing properly causing dome lights to stay on and drain battery. did find back dome light on 1 night, turned off light, and reclosed hatch. i feel like i've been diligent since but it was dead again this morning anyway. date listed below is most recent incident. previous 2 incidents were about a week ago and about 2-3 days apart.

In 2018 the battery kept dying and had go be replaced. now, in 2012, the same thing is happening again. it had to be jumped off yesterday morning, again this morning and now this evening is dead again. the car only has a very little over 32,000 actual miles on it. the vehicle is keopt in the garage all the time and this is where it is as it is dying.

Experienced frequent occurrences of dead battery (that was only 8 months old). dealer replaced battery but i continued to have intermittent issues over the next year. took it back to dealer in aug 2020 for analysis, was told no issue, it just isn't driven enough, and recommended battery maintainer install or gel battery. issue can occur whether car was driven yesterday or a week ago. was told by independent mechanic that battery installed at dealer was too weak so i purchased a new battery in feb 2021 and have been monitoring voltage. while i have not had a completely dead battery since then, there have been a few sluggish starts. volt meter shows battery drops below 12v within hours after being driven. i ensure that no lights are left on, nor is anything plugged into charging ports, to mitigate drainage and believe there is phantom drain/electrical malfunction somewhere in the system.

Subaru dealer replaced dead battery 10/2020. car parked for 20 days (no lights, etc were on during that time) and battery was dead. dealer checked battery and electrical systems and claimed all was good. he did say that it is not uncommon for them to go dead in 10 to 14 days. this is the second time this occurred. the 1st time, the dealer replaced the battery (10/2020)

Battery died and electrical system would not charge vehicle. car was towed to subaru in savanah where the battery was replaced and the charging system fixed. this is an apparent system problem with outbacks

The battery keeps failing. it’s my 4th battery change and i can feel that i will need to change the 4th one soon.

I had several times in 2020 where my battery went dead after leaving the back tailgate open or listening to the radio with the engine off. the last time it happened, we replaced the battery, fearing it happening again in the cold weather(12/2020). all of these situations happened while the vehicle was parked and either the engine was turned off or just the accessory mode was on.

My original battery died earlier than it should have (~dec 19/31k mi) about a year and a half after purchasing car) and was replaced under warranty. in the last 6 months, i've had repeated issues with my battery being dead and having to jump start the vehicle. took it to the dealer and was informed they saw nothing wrong with it. within 1 month (dec 20) alone, i had to have the car jumpstarted 3 times. i had to buy my own jumper to deal with the problem. it doesn't die while on, it's just dead when i go to start it.

Since the time of purchase in aug 2020, the battery has drained, and thus stalled the car, three times. the battery has been checked, functions normally, and is at full capacity. the only obvious connection between each occurrence seems to be raising the back tailgate. the first time happened while camping. the tailgate was open for about an hour while removing camping gear. the second time happened while in town (boise, id) and the back was open for roughly twenty minutes. the third time happened again in the mountains and the tailgate was open for less than ten minutes. the battery is quick to jump and, again, has been checked.

My windshield cracked on the inside of the window without any force applied on a moderate temperature day without ac or heat blowing. i was driving down a straight well-maintained road when it happened and heard the pop of the windshield. approx speed was 20mph with no street bumps and again on a very calm day as far as temperature. also, no equipment or people around who could have seemed to 'tossed' anything at the windshield. the crack is on the interior layer of the windsheild and not the outter. also, i have had 2 instances now where my car has completely died without any items being left on to drain the battery. first time was after the car had been off only a hour or so and completely dead. i repleaced the battery and at that point the car was only 2 years old. the second time the battery and systems tested all fine but it was so dead, power locks wouldnt work with the key fob.

The car battery has died for no apparent reason twice within less than 2 years of owning the vehicle. i’ve had to replace the battery both times as it would not hold a charge.

The first time, i was driving and heard a rock hit the windshield, i watched the crack spread across the windshield just as fast as it happened. after that incident, it seemed each rock that hit my windshield turned into a full-length crack.

I have a 2017 subaru outback. i have replaced the battery 4 times and less than 5 years.

Bought the outback new in july 2017. in 2018 the car battery died several times. the the original battery was tested and failed the gr8 test and was replaced under warranty. in 2019 the battery once again died and the battery failed gr8 test. it was replaced under warranty. in 2020-4/2021 the battery died several times when the engine was not running (drivers door opened for 10 minutes, radio on for 10 minutes and driven to a restaurant 10 miles and battery dead after 30 minutes). on 4/19/21 battery tested and a draw test performed. the draw test found the vehicle to be in spec and the battery passed the gr8. the car’s software was updated to fully charge the battery on short trips.

When my car sits in garage for a week, the battery dies. i have taken it to subaru dealer and they say there is no problem. but i continue to have problems with this car. i have documentation on the 6 times i have had to use road servic finally i bought a trickle charger to remedy this problem.e for a battery jump start and the receipts going to dealer.

Battery died multiple times . left overnight, dead the next morning.car could be jumped from another car but not from a lithium ion battery pack. after many aaa calls i took it to the dealer . they couldn’t find anything wrong. after several trips to the dealership i just said i’ll buy another battery. . i’ve had 3 batteries in 4 years.

I have faced battery issue with subaru outback numerous of times. the vehicle was purchased on 17feb, 2017 as brand new subaru outback 2017. i faced battery issue first in april 02, 2018. the vehicle didn't start all the time, i also got stuck car won't start, away from my home. i showed to the dealer and battery test failed, they replaced with same oem battery. the battery was still in warranty january, 2020 same issue re-appeared. the dealer tested battery and replaced with same oem battery again. i still believe there is issue with their battery and no surprise if i get stuck again with same problem.

Vehicle died while in a hospital parking lot and was jump-started. battery replaced by a local repair shop. car could only sit 2 - 3 days before needing a jump start. took car to stl subaru dealer. they upgraded the charging software. the dealership stated that the two-week-old battery was bad. when connected to the car, the overnight voltage drops on the battery would be from 0.4 to 0.5 volts. the battery was typically dead within 3-4 days. when disconnected from the car, the overnight voltage loss on the battery was minimal. this indicated the car had unsustainable current draw even when "turned off." returned to the subaru dealer, noting the car displayed excessive current draw when turned off. they reported was that the factory diagnostic machine had indicated no problem with the car or it's electronics but that the battery was bad. local repair shop disagreed but replaced the battery with another new. the overnight discharge condition continued with a new battery. i placed the car in "parked and locked" condition and measured the current across each fuse in both the engine and passenger compartment. 2 passenger compartment fuses showed significant current draw when the car is parked and locked, serving a power window and the circuit labeled "acc" which includes the car's heating, cooling and defrosting. i removed these fuses and the car can now sit unused for extended periods. replacing the fuses returns the car to the overnight battery drain condition. i now have a car with a non-functioning passenger window and no heating/cooling or defroster. it is unclear if the car can pass the state safety inspection in this condition. to me, this proves that the problem is not the battery but rather unsustainable current draw from the car's electronics when parked and "turned off." the car is not safe to drive without a defroster.

Battery discharges and needs replacement.

In january of 2020, car with44659 miles unexpectedly would not start, requiring a aaa jump, and then purchase of new battery. 11 months later, on 2/1/2021 car with 55153 miles would again not stop. aaa had to jump start. we drove vehicle to a local dealer who claimed that battery was now fully recharged, and there was nothing they could do. we purchased and now carry an emergency battery charger with us out of fear of this occurring again.

Complaintpurchased vehicle on 8/15/2017. started having electrical issues that have persisted consistently. incidents include radio freezing, radio updates and problems still persist, full radio / screen replaced, lights on the cpnsole pulsing during a highway night drive, notice from starlink that my system was not working and i recently just had my battery replaced for the fourth time in 43 months of owning this auto. most recently i couldnt start my car and was stuck at the south rim of the grand canyon. had to get the auto to flagstaff subaru to get the battery replaced. no one mentioned that this issue was recurring and widespread problem. when i got my car back to las vegas, i took the car in to the las vegas subaru dealer on april 8, 2021. the car was picked up by me on tuesday ap 13, 2021. i was told that they did an update and that the problem would be fixed. there is no way to tell if that is even remotely correct as there is a new battery (again the 4th battery) in this vehicle and who knows when and where i will get stuck next. the time periods between incidents are as little as a few months and beyond. i literally just read an article today about there being a class action lawsuit for this very same issue for 2016-2020 subaru outbacks. no one in the service department or at subaru national 800 number mentioned this to me. after this 4th battery incident, i did make a complaint to subaru's national office

The battery failed less than 3 years old. completely died on november 6,2019. the vehicle was parked and would not start.

On multiple occasions, i've arrived at my car after a reasonably short time away - each time overnight, parked in my garage - to find my battery fully drained. i wondered if i had left my lights on, and if that might have caused the problem. i found that the controls for my headlamps were in the off position. next, i wondered if i had left a door ajar, or an interior light control switch in the on position. i never found a door ajar. i never found an interior light switch on. i take my car into faraway corners of the wilderness on occasion. i cannot risk battery drain when i return to my car after a day or two of adventure. to be safe after these incidents, i removed the lightbulb from the "way back" of my subaru outback. i did this to avoid accidentally draining the battery if i left that light on (easy to go unnoticed). further, i keep each of the other interior light swich controls in the off position. i changed this from the "on when a door is open" position that i used to keep the switches in, again to ensure that i don't accidentally drain the battery. during my next maintenance visit with my subaru dealer's maintenance team (an oil change, i believe), i discussed the battery failure with the technician. i asked the person if there was some way set a software control so that no light would remain illuminated with the engine turned off for more than some set period of time (for instance, 10 minutes, or a half hour). the technician said there was no way to set that for the car. i regularly check to ensure that i'm not leaving my front seat, or mid-seat lights on since my battery had drained on those occasions. i've always wondered, however, if the problem was some electrical issue with my car, rather than my own potential mistake. more and more, i think it may have been an electrical battery drain issue.

My 2017 subaru outback has electrical problems causing the battery to drain. within two months of purchasing my new vehicle in 2017 the battery died while the vehicle was parked for two days. nothing was left on to drain the battery, something within the pre-designed electrical system failed draining my battery. this continued to happen periodically over the next two years until i decided to purchase an optima red top battery at my own expense since subaru did not provide an answer to this problem. this should not have happened, when buying a new vehicle i do not expect the battery to die right away.

The car has 30k miles and the battery drained out suddenly. the only solution was to purchase another battery from the dealership. i was told that battery had low charge. i think this issue is the same as other has been experiencing.

Purchased new vehicle from teton motors in jackson, wy. battery was replaced once under warranty and dealer thought it was a bad battery as it failed so quickly. started having issues with car starting due to drained battery about 6 months later and we thought that we had left lights on in the car. we turned off all interior lights to try to ensure this did not happen again. during routine service we were informed that battery was bad as it would not hold charge and needed to be replaced. also, dealership suggested us install a trickle charger as my wife does not drive the car very far for work. so we paid to replace battery and install trickle charger in early 2021.

Will not start with keyless ignition. first time 2018 when battery appeared dead and coukd not be jump started in our garage and coukd not unlock doors or emergency brake and could not be jumped, car towed and new battery installed. one week later same thing again dead battery in our garage and car tested by subaru for more than a week and no cause determined. third time april 1, 2021 battery dead after three short stops and driving less than 10 miles and radio could not be shut off at first. tow truck driver said battery at almost full charge and duggrsted use key fob and press start and it worked.

This vehicle is driven circa 125miles/month. the battery is usually drained before use, and must be charged. it is typically ok until the next use, when recharge must recur. this means that the computer is always resetting itself. the reset causes the vehicle to fail state inspection. this has been a recurrent problem since the vehicle was purchased new in february 2017.

2017 outback. unable to remove the key from the ignition. once in park turning the steering wheel back and forth doesn't help to release the key. moved gear shift multiple directions until eventually the key was removed. the key isn't particularly worn.

My windshield had to be replaced twice in three months once 2-20-19 and 5-6-2019.

My subaru outback is less than 3y 9m after being purchased a brand new and it already got 5 (five !!!) new batteries replaced without being identified with any issues by subaru technicians. the first time the battery died was when the car was only 7 month old on the original warranty. a new oem battery (#2) has been installed at the subaru dealership. 14 months later this subaru battery #2 is dead, replaced by a new aaa battery #3 that within two months was dead, extremely corroded. once again i was forced to address the same issue, bringing the car to a dealership where a new oem subaru battery #4 was installed and covered by a thick layer of petroleum jelly. the battery #4 has lasted only for 17 months. thus a new subaru oem battery #5 had to be installed. every time i'm told the car has been checked, no issues have been found, though i had also reported that i kept adjusting the clock in my car every couple of weeks, it has been falling behind. it's hard to accept that subaru technicians have not been able to diagnose the cause of the parasitic drain problem in my car. what is exactly going on with my subaru outback 2017 electrical system? too much frustration when i missed my working hours, medical appointments due to dealing with the car that is not starting, as well as witnessing my car losing its value. all the documents are kept in a file, my notes are recorded.

The electrical system keeps draining the battery. i have to keep a battery jumper in my car because the battery is constantly dead. i’m in my 2nd battery and having to jump star5 it at least twice a month and the car only has 30,000 miles.

Car was rear ended (driver side rear) at full speed, which then pushed us into a parking lot, specifically the corner with a cement piling with a light pole which collapsed, no airbags deployed.

This is a re-submission of complaint no 11398779. photo files failed to upload. i had just entered the golf course parking lot and had turned right to enter a perpendicular parking slot. my speed was less than 5 mph. my car suddenly accelerated out of control, hit a concrete parking block (6 in high) and then over a 1 foot high wall which was 3 feet from the block. the car ended up on a down slope and the rear wheel fortunately caught on a retaining wall. i was not injured and the airbags did not deploy. there was one witness to this terrifying event which occurred on february 4, 2010 at about 8:10 am. it occurred in a part of the parking lot i have used at least 50 times in the past year. several members have said they are afraid of parking in these spots and will never use them again. the component that failed is unknown to me, but i feel it is a definite safety risk. i was fully insured and the minor damage to the car was covered by my insurance. ## #vpic# 1 - check digit (9th position) does not calculate properly #vpic#

I bought the car 25 june 2020 and 3 days into it i got a chip going theu an automated car wash i called safelite and the ins company and they replaced the windshield and out of nowhere i get a crack coming up from bottom of windshield on drivers side going up to wiper area the car sat for 2 days in my driveway while i drove my other vehicle prior to this florida heat is brutal i believe this is a faulty windshield you cant see it well unless your in driver seat or cleaning windshield ad i am ocd

A minor rock hit on highway causes windshield crack from from bottom near wipers all the way to the middle of screen.

A crack formed in the windshield during normal driving, there was no chip or object that hit the windshield that would form a crack. it is a big s-shaped curve from the top of the windshield where it meet the roof down toward the middle of the windshield below the rear view mirror. the windshield was replaced by the dealer within the last 6 weeks from a prior chip and crack.

Dead battery requiring tow service to charge battery 4/2018 and 5/2018. replaced battery under warranty after testing at subaru 5/2018. dead battery requiring towing company charge times in 5/2020 and replaced battery on 5/14/2020. dead battery now again in 4/2021 requiring towing company battery charge.

Safety defect operator data: blind spot indicator is only presented on external review mirror. data should be provided in center instrument cluster rather than having to deflect focus from direction of travel.

Vehicle design safety defect: after locking doors while seated in vehicle must select unlock to exit vehicle. in an emergency safety dictates that pulling door open lever would open door in one action.

I recently purchased a 2017 subaru outback. it developed random small chips in the windshield in 4 different spots on the windshield i was driving on a small neighborhood street, when i noticed specs on my windshield that would not come off upon further inspection i came to realize they were tiny chips in the glass. i have no explanation as to how those got there i was not impacted by anything flying at my windshield. i had to pay out of pocket to fix one chip that got big enough to possibly crack the other 3 i was told by the safelight employee that i would get lots of them and i didn’t need to do anything until they chipped or cracked deeper. he informed me that the subaru glass is very thin and chips and cracks easily he has many subaru’s that come in for this problem. the way the chips are starting out very tiny and how they are spaced out leads me to believe this is something subaru should be made aware and recall and replace. my husband just purchased a cross trek and no surprise after inspecting his windshield we found two very tiny small chips in different locations on his windshield. i was told to try and keep my windshield cool and out of the sun to try and prevent anymore chipping or cracking. if i had known the subaru outback had this defect i never would have purchased this car.

The window cracked from the inside starting on the bottom of the front window. there are also multiple cracks on other parts of the windows.

I purchased the vehicle used from a dealership on 02/09/2021. on 03/31/2021 while driving the car, i noticed a crack in the windshield near the top center of the windshield. upon further exploration, i noticed the crack extended from the top-center, down about 4 inches and then another 6 inches towards the passenger side of the vehicle. the vehicle has not been involved in any crash or accident in the six weeks i have owned the car. the crack seems to have appeared out of nowhere.

I recently started having issues with removing my key from the ignition. i could remove it most of the time after multiple attempts and messing with the shifter and steering wheel etc. but there was at least one time that i had an appointment and could not after 10 minutes, remove the key. i had to leave the key in the ignition with the car in the partially "on" setting. i took this into subaru dealership to get it fixed on 25mar2021. i discovered that this is a known issue, but that subaru decided it wasn't a safety issue. i had to pay about $500 to repair this issue. i beg to differ that this is a safety issue. leaving the keys in the ignition because i could not remove them is a safety issue because 1) an un-licensed driver or youngster could have gotten in the car and started driving it; or 2) a criminal could have gotten in the car and waited for me to return with malicious intentions and 3) or the car could have simply been stolen. i also contacted my insurance rep and found out that if a car is stolen with the key in the ignition, that this would be a non covered claim. even if it was physically impossible for me to remove the keys.

The headlights (hid with auto-leveling) are pointed dangerously low. they do not illuminate the road ahead far enough. a driver would have very little time to react, given this limited illumination distance. subaru dealerships are adamant the headlights are adjusted to specifications. there are many complaints about this issue all over the internet from owners, and the dealerships i've mentioned this issue to have explained they are aware of the complaints, but there is nothing they can do. i am very worried for our safety and for the pedestrians/vehicles we would not see in time to stop. we purchased this vehicle new, and this is not a new issue. i have tried to address it for several years. when the vehicle is accelerating from a stoplight, for example, the headlights are basically fine (given the shift of weight to the rear which has the front of the vehicle aimed a bit higher), but as soon as the vehicle levels out, the issue is very evident. the automatic high beam feature simply does not compensate, as the automatic high beams are not intuitive enough to perfectly activate and stay activated every time (it misreads surrounding street lights, for example, as oncoming headlights very easily.

I am experiencing repeated battery drain leaving the vehicle unable to start. the dealer says i am leaving something electrical "on" when i park it. it has gotten so bad that i carry a starter jump pack battery to get it going when the battery goes dead. the original equipment battery rating is 200 cold crank amps below the standard of 550 cca seen in most cars. this problem has been going on since i first purchased the vehicle new.

This car has had repeated electrical issues. the car is on it's third battery in 4 years. suubaru paid for the last "aftermarket" battery based on my request and numerous complaints from others. the safety issue came up from the last problem: the key was stuck in the ignition. this too is a common problem. the dealer replaced the sensor in the gear shift mechanism to fix this problem. the safety issue is owners are posting workarounds on line to get around this problem. the workarounds get around the issue. however, by disconnecting wires the key can be removed in any position, including while the car is in gear and moving. that is clearly a potential problem. this repair was made approximately three weeks ago. two days ago the battery was completely depleted and the tailgate would not function. i brought this to subaru's attention. this time they said i was out of warranty and they would not assist (i was out of warranty on the ignition switch and battery issues). i believe there is a fundamental problem in this generation of subaru's that needs to be investigated. a simple search of the subaru outback forum for key release problems will verify my assertion. subaru needs to come clean on the electrical engineering deficiencies impacting safety and reliability.

Have the car 5 years, have had to replace the battery now twice. once at 2 years and once a year and a half later. i own a 2014 vw beetle and still have not had to replace the battery.

Battery keeps draining even after being replaced key sensor also always goes off that key is not in car when driving

After 2 years of use, the oem battery was not keeping the charge or was draining due to an issue with the electrical system. i had to have the car jumped a couple of times to get it started. brought the car to subaru dealer and they did not find any issues but replaced the battery with another oem battery, quite unusual until i read an articale about a class action suit against subaru. in 2020, the new oem battery was having issues requiring i jump it several times. i was away from home at the time and brought the car to advanced auto parts. they tested the 2nd oem battery and advised the battery was bad and not holding the charge. at that time i purchased a diehard battery and have had no issues in the last 6 months. as i stated above, i have read that subaru is in a class action suit for the exact issue i had and wanted to have this issue recorded.

Battery drains for no apparent reason. leaves people stranded.

Vehicle's battery went dead at about 22,283 miles in jan of 2020. battery would keep dying even after proper jumping. vehicle was brought in to dealership. dealership advised of software issue draining the battery. i was advised that they did an update and replaced battery. a year later, vehicle is having battery issues again (battery kept dying- multiple times- even after driving to try to "charge" battery). vehicle was brought into dealership in feb 2021 at 23,560 miles. different statements were made by dealership. i was told there was an issue with the vehicle electrical system needing more power than the battery could provide. i was told they had a solution, a bigger battery. when i picked up my car they just swapped out the battery with the same size battery. they didn't tell me (tried to hide it). when i confronted them, they advised that subaru didn't have a fix yet for the draining of the battery. subaru says i will just have to keep bringing in my vehicle every time there is an issue with the battery until they come out with a fix. please note: subaru appears to try and hide the electrical issue. none of this information was on my service paper work and they only spoke about the electrical system in feb 2021 after i brought up the issue after reading forums on the internet about people having the same issue.

My 2017 subaru outback 2.5i limited began having dead battery issues at nearly 15,000 miles. the first incident happened while visiting the cherokee national forest. the car would not start after we returned from a short hike. it left us stranded and forced to walk 4.5 miles to gain cell service to call for help. my car now has 36,000 miles as of 3/16/21 and is on its third battery. this time i bought the best battery i could find and am hoping for the best. something keeps draining the battery, leaving me in one bind after another. with no help diagnosing the problem at the dealership, what more can i do???

Battery appears to drain over a relatively short period of time resulting in: p1604 startability malfunction, b2320 back &side radar low voltage, c1413 antilock brakes voltage malfunction, b2500 power lift gate voltage malfunction, b2a07 telematics battery charge history fault, b1011 battery power supply control malfunction, b1013 ignition power supply failure, and b1014 accessory power supply failure. all is taking place while vehicle is parked in heated garage.

We continue to have to change the battery in our subaru outback. this last one only lasted 2-3 months.

Battery drain. battery needed replacement 11/14/2019.

Over 4 years of ownership (new when purchased in feb 2017) have experienced 6 occurrences (first in jan 2018) of vehicle failing to start due to dead battery. original battery replaced under warranty in aug 2019. as of today (03/15/2021) battery is being replaced again by dealer at my cost. no other problems identified by dealer. vehicle always stationary when problem occurred. approx 42k miles on odometer.

Battery failure several times after playing radio 15 minutes, after tailgate left up for 1/2 hour. dealer reprogrammed ecu to increase charging, would not start and dealer said all normal on 1/12/19@ 18,301 miles. i replaced it with the larger capacity battery at autozone. since then no battery problems. however, i am still afraid to play radio or have tailgate up for a long period.

Driven the 2017 subaru outback in the morning to work and parked in a covered parking garage. noticed a big crack on the upper middle of the windshield when getting back to the car in the garage at night time.

Battery died less than 2 years old. car was parked for about a week and when i tried to start it it would not turn over. took to dealer and they said the battery was dead.

I have replaced the battery twice on my own since i was told they aren't covered under warranty. the batteries discharge on their own when the car is parked. i have to use a battery charger all the time or the battery is dead when i try to start the car. i put the last battery in around aug 2020.

During first 3 years of ownership our new car has failed to start many times and emergency service called to jump start vehicle as battery was discharged after power trunk opened without any activation while parked in our garage. battery discharged several times without trunk activity, simply parked overnight in our garage with everything electrical checked and turned off. dealer replaced battery 4/20. battery discharged again a couple of weeks ago (3/06/2021) while having trunk open to clean inside of car. very concerned as to being stranded again due to safety..

Battery died twice when car was inactive for one week. both times had to replace the battery.

In home driveway, car won't start, battery dead. towed to dealer, battery good but needed charge. dec11, 2020, in driveway, car won't start, and clicking noise in rear power gate, towed to dealer. battery tested bad, replaced. also replaced prg module for rear gate. mar 8, 2021, in driveway at home, won't start. jumped and drove to dealer...(this new battery) charged and tested, failed, so they replaced the battery, again. It looks like the car bleeds the battery. vehicle purchase: oct 2016 i had my oem battery replaced due it it dying in < 3 years. (september 2019) i replaced it with duralast gold and that also died in 2.5 years. (feb 2021) during the cold wave in texas, the vehicle would not start. i chalked it up as cold weather and went on. but this past week it died all of a sudden and i had to get it replaced via warranty. i ran a blue driver report and it shows low voltage errors for some components. this sounds like the same ongoing lawsuit for battery drain issue.

When the car is shut off, something is draining the battery so that it very often does not start in the morning.

Repeated battery failures. purchased vehicle certified pre-owned in september 2020 with 11,000 miles on it. battery has been replaced by dealership twice since then, and vehicle still intermittently fails to start under normal driving conditions, requiring jump-start.

Purchased the car new in may 2017. bob moore subaru. i just replaced the 4th battery on march 8,2021. four batteries in less than 4 years. service has checked the system before on 3/8/21. subaru just says it checks out and thats it. how would the owners of the company like to replace a battery every year. how would anyone look you in the face and say- it checks out fine. are you kidding me. car is garage kept, perfect condition and drove everyday. it is dead the next day with no signs of being weak. fob is in back of my house.

Vehicle charging system seems to be working only part of the time . the battery has been drained more than once after driving the previous day . it’s almost like something has been left on ,draining the battery when i know every thing has turned off . is there something that stays on after you shut the car off long enough to drain the battery ?

I was driving down the road city highway 90 in ocean springs, ms (55mph) and my windshield suddenly cracked about six inches from from the driver side near where the frame meets with the car over. i did not get hit by anything. it was lightly raining, i had my windshield wipers on the absolute lowest setting. it was about 47 degrees fahrenheit, and i had my defroster on split with my feet set to 70 degrees fahrenheit.

The key gets stuck randomly in the ignition after driving around and parking the outback. have to play around with the shifter to hopefully get the key out. at this time, it's random and intermittent. it's a concern that it will be a constant problem and one day the key won't come out at all. it seems to be a known problem as subaru has a tsb 16-112-18r for the problem. the problem started happening after four years of ownership at about 42,000 miles. there has not been any spills or contamination that i know of. it started in february 2021 and has happened about a half dozen times. https://www.tsbsearch.com/subaru/16-112-18r

Battery has died 3 times in 4 years, battery replaced after it died the first time in 2018. new battery, only approx. 2 years old, died twice in 2 weeks. all three times the car would not start after i had the back hatch and/or doors open 20-30 minutes, sometimes while cleaning the interior. the third time the car would not start after having the back hatch open approx. 5 minutes after taking some items out of the back. all three times the car was off and in the garage.

Subrau outback windshields are prone to cracks in the center top area. small rocks will cause damage 100% of the time in this same area. replaced original windshield and current windshield experienced cracking in the same location.

A new battery died after 7 months use. i replaced it. the newer one died in 5 days. i read there is a class action lawsuit about this model draining batteries prematurely. each time, we went to use the vehicle, stationary, and found the battery completely dead.

My car windshield all of sudden started cracking 2 weeks ago around february 17th.2021. my car always parked on my driveway. called local dealer was told it’s going to cost us $1200 to get it replaced.

Numerous times over past two months, when at slow speeds, the automatic transmission stalls causing the car to stop. at least once, when entering traffic, a car behind had to do an emergency slowdown to avoid a rear end collision. two subaru dealers have checked the vehicle being unable to find a problem. yet, on searching the web, this common conditionis is clearly described in nhtsa files.

Battery dies after the vehicle is idle more than a week. the original battery lasted three years. the problem continues with the replacement, which is less than a year old. i am the original owner and have driven this vehicle less than 20k miles.

I had backed my car up to the front of the garage. i came to a complete stop. as i tried to put my car in park, my vehicle catapulted into the garage which was directly behind it. i believe my car experienced "sudden uninterrupted acceleration". my cinder block garage partially collapsed and need to be completely razed.

For no apparent reason my outback's windshield cracked. the crack starts near the bottom of the passenger side and extends upward about 14 inches and sideways about 10 inches. it occured while the car was parked at a ski area. it was snowing and about 28 degrees.

On the morning of february 23, 2018 and went out to my vehicle that was parked (stationary) in my enclosed covered garage to find a giant crack through my windshield with no discernable cause.

Defective electrical system causes battery to drain prematurely and requires jump starts if vehicle is not frequently operated.

After returning home from running errands noticed windshield was cracked there was no sign of anything hitting the windshield didn’t hear anything hit during the trip

1) windshield cracked overnight while parked in an enclosed garage. this occurred within the first few months of ownership. 2) the advanced collision detection/ lane tracking system called eyesight failed within the first few months of ownership. 3) battery has repeatedly failed and required roadside assistance. car was parked in ab enclosed garage most of the times when this failure occurred. 3) currently, a flat tire indicator is on even though all tires are properly inflated. note: except for the windshield case, the dealer has been unable to diagnose or duplicate the problem and the only remedy provided was a battery replacement.

Battery keeps dying with no apparent reason. has been replaced 5 times with only 52,000 miles. now battery is dead again after only 68 days after last replacement.

Faulty occupant detection system. turns off airbag with passenger. turns on airbag and seatbelt chime with no passenger/weight. intermittent. brand new car with 700 miles and brought in 3 times to subaru santa monica. service center unable to replicate problem, but i sent them videos.

Our windshield began slowly cracking starting at the base of the driver side front window. it began at the bottom edge (heat strip) and moved half up the windshield before we replaced. cost $569 for oem windshield. subaru dealer denied the warranty claim, while admitting a problem with earlier versions that year's outback.

Front driver and front passenger doors do not lock automatically and remain unlock when shift in drive when car is stationary and also when care in motion. no voice, light or any alerts that alert the driver to lock the doors manually every time you drive the car. this a safety issue as if you forget to lock the doors manually and by any chance snaps on the door handle, car door will open and fatalities can occur. spoke with service advisor at my subaru dealer and he stated that this issue is real and there is no way to program the vehicle to lock the front doors automatically when it is in drive or at certain speed. i am not aware of any other cars that have same issue, even older cars 10 plus years old cars has this safety feature as standard. this issue is not mentioned anywhere in the vehicle manual and sales persons do not talk about. in my opinion this is a safety issue and a key factor when choosing to buy subaru outback.

Car attempted to accelerate without input from driver.while approaching a stop sign i was slowing down with my foot on the brake car engine suddenly raved up to 4000 k, when i shifted to neutral engine revved to 7000k. i put car back in gear and drove car approximately a quarter mile back to my home using the brakes to control speed of car and called the dealer. had car towed to dealer where it remains.

I bought a 2017 subaru outback in march,2017. it has 1946 miles. car has safety issues. car doesn't go into park, instead it goes into reverse. it happened when come home try to put in park, i come out of the car but it start going back. also after that it was not going into drive either. subaru change the shift assembly, but the car still make "klunk" noise when i put in the park.

I purchased my 2017 subaru outback brand new in january, 2017. currently, in may 2017, the vehicle has 3200 miles of operation. the problem i am having is three-fold. 1. around town in city traffic, the steering is heavy and difficult to control. it is very tiring to drive the vehicle under these condition. at times, it feels as if you may suddenly loose control of the steering. 2. the vehicle wanders. at highway speeds, it is difficult to keep the vehicle on center of the lane. you must constantly correct from left to right in order to keep the car on-track. at one time during one of these corrections, the vehicle crossed the lane divider and almost impacted the vehicle driving adjacent to me. 3. steering wheel does not return to straight ahead. the vehicle does not "return to center" under any operating conditions. on most cars, if you turn the wheel left or right, the steering geometry tries to return the steering wheel to center position to keep the vehicle traveling in a straight line. the subaru outback does not exhibit this capability.

Driving back to michigan from florida, my 2017 subaru outback (6000 miles) stalled twice unexpectedly in heavy traffic conditions on i75. the vehicle was in stop and go traffic when it stalled. i coasted to the median, placed the car in park and restarted the engine. (both times) the condition has not repeated itself since, now has (7800 miles). subaru dealership could not replicate the problem and subaru customer service cannot resolve the issue.

As exit my level garage the driveway is on at 9% down slope when i put my car in reverse and back up out of the garage and then place the car to drive to move back up the driveway to load my wife and grandchild the car slips backwards between one and 3 feet or three seconds of his full slippage. my granddaughter at two years of age does not know that the car will slip back without control. this is a safety concern and can cause critical harm to her and/or my wife. other car manufactures cvt transmissions has almost zero slippage from reverse to drive. this characteristic on the 2017 subaru outback creates a very unsafe condition and if safety is your biggest concern i find this a big safety characteristic and if i knew this before i would not have leased this vehicle.

Takata inflators i cannot find out if my air bags on my 2017 subaru outback are on the recall.i have not received a recall letter.can you please find out and let me know

Subaru 2017 push button start allows the driver to turn off the engine with car gear selector still in drive. when i did this, the car began to roll as i exited. fortunately, i had one foot still in the car and was able to press the brake pedal.

Takata recall--checking if appropriate

Window cracked but was not hit with anything. crack appeared on the drivers side, halfway down the windshield, and obstructs view of the driver. car has less than 1600 miles on it. dealer stated it was not covered as a defect and we are on own own to replace it. there are numerous complaints of subaru outback windshields cracking because they are to thin. dangerous to drive due to visibility issues.

On 8 june 2017 i had just pulled into a parking spot in front of a medical suite when my leased three month old 2017 subaru outback with 1,000 miles suddenly had an unintended acceleration episode jumping the curb and crashing into a brick wall and suite door after displacing a threshold column by two inches. the airbag did not deploy, the "eyesight" function did not stop the vehicle, the seat belt did not restrain me and my chest slammed into the steering wheel, my knees crashed into the dashboard. on 2 june, less than a week earlier, the car had done the same unintended acceleration while backing out of a parking spot, but nothing was hit at that time. after the initial ambulance er visit, plus two more, my physical injuries consisting of aches and pains, bruises, xrays, iv treatment for persistent headache after the accident, are insignificant compared to the mental and emotional damage. not to mention the economic burden and frustrating situation this leaves me in. i contacted the dealership and sent in pictures of the vehicles and damaged building. they in turn referred my complaint to subaru of america who was very diligent in performing an investigation and keeping me updated with the procedure. however, almost two months after the accident, subaru of america claims their results indicate "misapplication of throttle and break" clearly putting the blame on me, without mentioning anything about the first incident, and the lack of response of the safety features of the vehicle during the accident. there are at least 34 reports of similar accidents due to unintended acceleration of outback vehicles, and at least 70 related to the subaru forester on carproblemzoo.com since 2000. i now find myself with a beautiful brand new vehicle that i will pay the lease for, but don't feel comfortable driving out of fear that the unintended acceleration will reoccur.

First braking issue (also power train): the brake pedal is only slightly higher than the height of the gas pedal. consequently, several times while driving, my right foot has hit both the brake pedal and the gas pedal simultaneously, especially in an emergency situation. in such instance, the result is a power surge while braking, potentially extending the stopping distance of the car. other cars (non-subaru) have the brake pedal higher, so this simultaneous application of brakes and power is less likely to happen. the dealer's service manager says the height of the brake pedal is not adjustable, and refers owners to subaru's customer retail services. subaru's customer retail services claims there is no way to adjust the height of the brake pedal to avoid this problem. second braking issue: unlike other cars, there is no emergency hand brake or foot brake on the subaru, so the risk of an accident is high if the regular brakes fail. the brakes have not yet failed, but there should be redundancy for this critical braking function.

Subaru markets their high beam assist (hba) feature as working “in conjunction with eyesight to automatically switch the headlights between the high and low settings when an oncoming vehicle is detected.” that’s not entirely true and that’s where the safety issue comes into play. the hba feature turns off high beams at lower speeds no matter if an oncoming car is present and absolutely turns them off at a stop sign. this makes for traveling at low speeds in residential communities dangerous. in our community, for example, it’s very hilly and curvy with a lot of wildlife and people who walk/jog so speeds are often below 20 mph, the speed at which subaru’s manual says this feature works. if anything, when there is no oncoming traffic in a residential communities high beams should always be on at night. this allows for the earlier detection of people and animals. in talking to subaru they really didn’t care at all that this created a dangerous situation and offered to tell their engineers. of course, this can be turned off, but only by visiting a dealer and paying them to fix subaru’s design flaw. nhtsa should require subaru to 1) fix this feature so that it only dims high beams when there is oncoming traffic; and 2) require subaru offer to disable the feature free of charge at any authorized dealer until the problem is fixed.

The "check engine" light came on a week ago and the engine became sluggish when accelerating. we took the car to marin subaru service department where they did a diagnostic test. result is that a rodent must have chewed through the soy-based harness covering the sensor wire. repair bill = $1,400, subaru says its not covered by the new car warranty. they are telling us not to drive the car now as it could be dangerous. insurance says it does not cover this either. subaru and the other mftrs have known about this issue for some time apparently but continue to use material they know attracts rodents.

I would really like to purchase a new subaru outback, but the forward jutting headrests ("head-restraining system") is way too uncomfortable. we are learning all newer vehicles seem to have these remarkably uncomfortable and posture damaging forward tilts due to your recommendations/requirements. please re-think your current recommendations and design recommended headrests which are safe and do not sacrifice posture and comfort. your current recommendations are certainly leading to worsening arthitic symptoms and pain for people such as me and may be contributing to the opioid epidemic.

I was driving 75 miles per hour on a busy highway in holiday ski traffic and the panel just above the brake and gas petal fell down and blocked my access to the break petal and limited my ability to move my foot off the gas petal. i was able to gain control of the car, while driving at a high speed in the left lane by yanking the panel off my feet and slowing down to exit the highway. i stopped the car, put the panel back in it's place and secured it with duck tape. i purchased this band new car on 12/30/16 and this happened on 2/17/17.

Star crack in windshield discovered stationary (in carport) the day after purchasing the vehicle (odometer reading 200 miles). location of crack slightly above wiper blade on passenger side. impact strike the size of a pinhead. the damage is characteristic of prior model years 2015 and 2016 in which the manufacturer initiated recalls. it is apparent this problem continues and has yet to be resolved.

The car battery has been completely dead twice when parked in airport lot for several days. once the battery was completely dead in the home garage when it hadn’t been driven for several days. each time the battery had to be jumped. the battery was replaced at our expense the first time because we assumed we left an interior light on. we are sad to discover there is an electrical problem that subaru will not fix.

2 weeks after purchasing the vehicle, the battery was described as, "completely dead." 1 year later, again, the car would not start and aaa reported the battery as, "completely dead," and could not find anything on in the car. a new battery was placed in the car and 24 hours later, aaa reported the battery as, "completely dead," as the car would not start. i have gone through 3 brand new batteries in 2 years, yet the car continues to drain the battery for no apparent reason. upon research i found there is a class action lawsuit against subaru for outback vehicles from 2016-2020 due to this exact problem, yet subaru, "refuses to fix the problem."

While traveling through michigan's upper peninsula and northern wisconsin during snow fall with a fully packed car on the highway i experienced the rear end "ghost walking" or "steering" or "pulling" to the left and to the right. i had to drive 40mph while two-wheeled drive camrys, civics, vans, etc. passed us by. growing up in northern michigan, i'm no stranger to winter conditions and all wheel drive vehicles. i don't think all-wheeled drive vehicles make me invincible, but they do make driving in wintery conditions better. after our trip, i took the car into the subaru dealer and they said at 37k miles, the suspension looked great, alignment looked great, and that they would recommend new tires (tires are at 4/32 and have even wear and tear). i asked to speak directly to the tech working on my car and he said that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle and that although they were recommending new tires, the current tire condition would not cause what i was describing. my wife and i then researched and came across several online forums with other driver's experiencing the similar issues, but with prior year models. i called subaru's main customer service line to see if they could help and they said that they would make note of my complaint, but that if the subaru dealer tech said the vehicle was fine other than suggesting new tires, i should get new tires and the vehicle would be fine. subaru also said there were no "campaigns" open with respect to this problem and that they were sorry i "felt like i had this experience" and there was nothing they could do. here's a link to a forum, where the people seem to know what is going on: https://www.subaruoutback.org/threads/2005-2009-ghostwalking-abnormal-winter-handling-fixes.30747/page-2. we plan to buy new tires, but are willing to offer our car up for test driving to see what is going on.

I'm on my 4th battery in 3 years. battery has gone dead multiple times, leaving me stranded in difficult and potentially dangerous situations. cannot open lift gate to access the cargo area where i keep my road safety reflectors, flashlight, tire pump, etc. stranded in dark parking lot 1 time. as a result of the reliability concerns i have had to buy a portable charging unit to have in the car at all times. i have also had to purchase a new battery for a car that only has 27k miles on it. there are instances of many similar problems resulting in a class action lawsuit against subaru. this not only impacts the reliability and safety, it also impacts the resale value.

Multiple times the tailgate has spontaneously opened when we were not in the vehicle. aside from issues like running the battery down, inclement weather damaging the interior and the theft of contents of the car are issues. thus far, the car has not been in motion when it happened, but there was a least one incident reported where a vehicle was in motion when this happened (see attached complaints of other owners.)this is not a case of accidentally activating the key fob - it has happened when the car was turned off and someone was sitting in the passenger seat. the only key was in a purse in the back seat. the passenger witnessed the car tailgate just spontaneously opening. it has happened when we returned to the car after being at an appointment, while staying at a motel, and when the car was packed for a trip the night before. we are very concerned this could happen when the car is in motion, creating a deadly hazard for other vehicles. we have found this problem reported by numerous owners of this model. the local dealer initially dismissed the problem as a case of accidentally pressing the key. we disputed this and they kept the car for two days to see if it would happen and it did not. sometimes it is two months between incidents. this is a serious problem and safety hazard that subaru needs to acknowledge and correct, perhaps necessitating a recall. there does not seem to be any conversation among service departments that have received similar complaints. it's just a single isolated case as far as our local dealer is concerned. i am submitting a document that shows multiple complaints (and not all) that other subaru owners have been reporting for years.

This occurs while the vehicle is stationary. when the at select lever (shift lever) is put into park the key only rotates into acc and not into lock. the key cannot be removed like this. the vehicle has 75,000 miles on it.

My vehicle developed a crack that has transversed the entirety of the windshield, necessitating its replacement. the crack began on the lower left (driver's) side and moved across to the right (passenger's) side before curving back and upward toward the location of the rearview mirror. this has obscured the eye sight cameras and impaired the safety mechanisms in the vehicle. the vehicle was parked when the crack began with no precipitating damage observed to the windshield. the crack continued to grow over the course of several days. ~`````````````

On december 7, 2020, at approximately 1200 hours, i returned to my 2017 subaru outback after a brief shopping trip. the battery was unable to start the vehicle. i had to use a portable battery starter to start the vehicle. the drive from my residence to the store was approximately 20 minutes long. the first thing i noticed upon starting up my vehicle was it drew hard from the battery, almost not starting. i am not new to this issue, as it has occurred several times over the past 4.5 years of owning this vehicle. the battery that came with my vehicle, purchased in july of 2016, was replaced under warranty at 808 miles. the battery was replaced again approximately 2 years later, suffering from the same issues. the battery would work okay at best, then start to draw hard on the battery, then die completely. when tested, all of the batteries were supposedly suffering from a bad cell. 3 batteries were replaced under warranty. the current battery was purchased just outside of warranty in 2019, as the last warranty battery was in 2017. this battery is supposedly a newer, updated model with more cca. i do not leave lights on in the car, or any electronics plugged in due to this consistent issue. this recurring issue has lead to a lack of trust in the vehicle starting, having stranded my family several times. to combat this issue, i keep a portable battery charger and jumper cables in the vehicle.

2017 subaru outback, constantly dead battery. i’ve had the car due on me multiple times. it cannot hold a charge. dec 5th it happened again and had to call tow company to jump it so i could take to the dealership. this is a recurring problem. this car has just 16,000 miles.

We bought this vehicle new. our battery has been drained prematurely numerous times and we had to replace the factory battery quickly after purchasing it. we have been stranded numerous times with the car being unable to start at all. majority of times this occurred, we had left on the accessories less than 5min. while waiting in our car before the entire battery was drained. on one occasion, the battery drained with no explanation. we contacted our local dealership for service and they said there is nothing that can be done about this. this issues is unlike any other car we have ever had. it is common to leave accessories on for a small amount of time without draining the whole battery. especially in a new car. after becoming frustrated with the dealership's response, we looked online and saw this is a known issue for subaru outbacks from our year. apparently the electrical system is flawed. we plan to trade in this vehicle as it is not reliable and we have been stranded so many times it is not a safe car to own. the car should be recalled or at least have a fix available.

Battery intermittantly discharges nessitating recharging. i replaced it with a new one thinking perhaps the oem (2yrs old) was faulty. then i read that this is a known problem with this year/model subaru.

I was driving down the highway that wasn't very busy (around 12:30 pm) and all of a sudden i hear a slight crack noise. i look around and i see a crack appeared on the passenger side of my windshield. while driving, it was growing longer. i don't understand how or where it came from but i am scared that it is going to get larger as the day and week continues. no debris nor large dump truck was near me. this crack happened too easily and has me questionable about my windsheild. i don't understand how something so little is turning into something so large and can potentially become dangerous.

I purchased my used subaru outback from carmax. it has been working fine for a period of time. however, now i find my car constantly dead and have had to purchase a charger and leave on my car every other day or i find my vehicle is completely dead and the battery is drained. it happens if i do not drive me vehicle for 48 hours. i also have an interlock device on my vehicle (put on after the battery issue began) and had my battery checked at an auto parts store who said it was fine. when i purchased my car from carmax the vehicle was dead in the lot so i was not able to test drive it. carmax replaced the battery to ensure it wasn’t a battery issue. this was likely a temporary fix which is why the issue didn’t occur immediately. i took the car into carmax and they checked the battery and found it to be working fine. i replaced the battery clip on the negative terminal, which they said was a little bit loose and i paid for the repair. the issue is still persisting. since i have found there is a class action lawsuit against subaru for this issue. carmax says i need to get subaru to fix it, if there is an issue. when it dies i usually have to go to the interlock mechanic and he has to reset it. this is causing significant issues with me getting to work and planning an upcoming move i am making in the next month. the interlock device can read whenever i turn the car on and how many times it has died and i can get this documentation if needed later as well.

In late 2019 i started having issues with my windshield. i wash my car 2x a week and park inside a garage every night. i started seeing light cracks forming on the windshield out of the blue. fast forword to 2020 i now have multiple feint cracks and i am afraid to drive with the fear it will crack more.

While driving on the highway a pebble hit the windshield months before september. there was a chip but no cracks, come september the windshield cracked from the spot where the pebble hit. pictures are shown below. the vehicle at the time was only 4-5 months old and in september 8 months old when the cracking started. i had the windshield changed through my insurance and satellite. the windshield has had pebbles hit it while i have been driving and there have been no cracks or chips.

As i was driving on a 2 lane road a tiny peddle off a vehicle in front of me hit the windshield creating a very subtle crack. the next morning there was a huge crack along the entire windshield affecting driver visibility. i currently don’t have pictures because it has already been replaced by the subaru dealer. the total cost was over $1,000 to replace. i was not aware of this vehicle complaint website at the time.

Mileage: 248. car continue to move backward after shifting from reverse into drive. shifting back to reverse and again to forward ( 3 times) did not help. it happened on a level parking lot (slow speed moving). after shifting automatic transmission from parking to reverse vehicle starts moving backward. after complete stop, shift lever was moved from reverse into drive. car continue to drive backwards after applying gas pedal. shift lever was moved back to reverse and again into drive. car still was moving backwards. there was 2 more attempts to shift back into reverse and into drive. no help. only 4-th attempt was successful and car starts moving forward. only because driver was very careful and mowing at slow speed, collision with others cars on a parking lot was avoided. this is very dangerous, because you never know in what direction car will move after shifting from reverse into drive.

I was pulling into a parking space when the vehicle suddenly accelerated forward with the engine revving. i slammed on the brakes preventing a collision with the care parked in the opposite parking space. the car continued to try to accelerate. i took the car out of gear and the engine roared, over revved, slowed, and over revved a second time before finely slowing down. this is the second time this has happened. definite safety issue. has something to do with the eyesight system/cruise control.

We were traveling south on interstate 15 and about 45 minutes into my trip to take my cousins back to the airport in salt lake city from idaho falls the hood of the car just flew up and smashed into the windshield. the care was un-drivable and had to be towed. ultimately the insurance company totaled the vehicle. the weekend after i was back in colorado my brother and i saw another subaru but different model that it looked like the same thing happened. have pictures of that as well.

Battery has died at least 5 times. enough to where i bought my own jump start battery. the first time i had to jump it was just over a year old, so i brought it into subaru and they replaced the battery free of charge. from that point on when the battery died i had it jumped by a tow. nearing the end of my lease the vehicles battery was date december of 2018. i attempted to have it jumped this morning, 11/7/2020, and i was told it was completely dead this time. while i was attempting to have roadside assistance jump the vehicle, i heard the tail gate trying to engage and then it failed to start. it seems like the tailgate was draining the battery trying to open or close, but it wasn't used when i got home.

Battery issues are non stop! battery dies all the time. we had a new 2016 outback previously, that had to be towed because it would just die. we traded it in for a new 2017 outback and it’s even worse. battery has been replaced (not sure how many times), and issue is still the same. leaves us stuck/stranded in random places, and back hatch will sometimes beep non stop even though it’s completely closed. we have to keep an emergency jump kit with us constantly. the back hatch won’t open when battery is dead/low, which is crazy that there isn’t some type of override to this. i have seen countless battery issues for this vehicle and i’m beyond shocked that this hasn’t been fixed/addressed by subaru. we are fed up with the battery drain, and do everything we can so we can (hopefully) proactively start our vehicle (have all interior lights off, radio off, air off - all systems possible turned off). even that doesn’t always work. we spend extra money on gas just to recharge the car by driving it more miles than we want to. i’m gonna be done with subaru after this.

Keys frequently get stuck in the ignition due to an electrical malfunction that causes the steering column to be unable to detect when the car is put into park. the entire gear shifter had to be replaced to resolve the issue. this is a frequent complaint for this make and model and it seems numerous complaints have been filed.

Premature battery failure. replaced twice in last 14 months. does not hold charge properly. seems to be either underpowered or has unidentified drain on battery.

Ascent dead battery issue. parasitic power draw that drains battery significantly when parked or short use. subaru tested but would not acknowledge the fault. i know need to use a trickle charger all the time when parked. 2 batteries impacted in the 8 month covid19 timeframe and in under 36k mile use. neither replaced by subaru.

The car battery was found to be dead after sitting for at least 2 days, on 3 different occasions before being replaced on 1/8/2020. after being replaced the same problem kept happening. the new battery was taken back to the place of purchase where it was tested and found to be in good working order. since being replaced the same condition keeps happening, at least 4 more time , most recent as 11/3/2020. each time the vehicle sat in our driveway for 2 to 3 days not being used

Our 2017 outback has problems with the battery discharging. the car wouldn't start in february 2020. since we had a long trip planned, we replaced the battery. that seemed to work for a while, but the car seemed to struggle with starting some mornings. i noted that the battery was only at 11.5 volts after sitting overnight. we took it to the dealer and they performed $130 "parasitic battery drain test", but it didn't show any problems. i investigated the problem on the internet and discovered that there is a recall to reprogram the car to solve the problem. the dealer wasn't aware of it and thanked us for bringing it to his attention (and to be "generous" he wasn't going to charge us for the recall!). we thought that the problem might be solved. if we don't drive the vehicle for 3 or 4 days, the battery is dead, under 11 volts. so, it is a ritual for us to have to charge the battery if it hasn't been driven in a couple of days. we also carry a spare 12v battery in the vehicle along with jumper cables. even after the vehicle has been parked for several hours, there is randomly a "fan noise" near the rear axle. i believe that this is the "parasitic drain" in action. there are lawsuits filed over similar complaints. i do have a cell phone video that has the sound documented, but it looks like i can't upload it. it continues to be a problem.

Battery died at 22928 miles and less than 2 years. dealer replaced, but 18 months later, and several jump starts, we took it back to the dealer. now, out of warranty, we spent $673 to replace a defective circuit board that was draining the battery.

Rear door (trunk) does not stop closing or does not opening nor by button on the front panel, nor by remote. battery is getting discharged after i stop and close it. i have to keep the jump starter battery in the car and use it every week, sometimes - every day. battery itself was tested good several times (i've started with it). all surfaces around end switches are clean, there a re no alarm indication about open door. at dealership they charged me $80 but did not find/help at all.

I bought this vehicle new. i am on the 4th windshield now. cracks show up below the wiper and spread straight up and down then across the windshield. any litle ding causes a complete loss of the windshield. i have never owned a car that had this problem...

2017 subaru outback limited with eyesite safety cameras/driver assist. windshield cracked overnight just sitting in my driveway nosed up to the garage. no crack when i left work to head home. nothing hit windshield on the way home. if you've had a rock or pebble hit you're windshield, believe me, you know it! scares the crap out you. nothing like that at all happened. next morning i get in car to head to work and there's a long crack coming up from the very bottom to about eye height and then turns inward toward the center of the glass on the passenger side. there was absolutely nothing around or on the car. there are no kids in the neighborhood either. my garage is about 200' from the street where the car was parked. small town residential road to a dead end, very, very little traffic. i have a 2011 subaru outback with 103k miles, and that has had no issues with cracks in the windshield. still has its original glass.

Pulling into our garage (as we have done probably thousands of times since owning the car), our 2017 outback accelerated out of control into the back wall of our garage. car had been stopped at the parking position in the garage and was being shifted into park when the acceleration occurred. gas pedal was not touched (car always coasts into garage under it's own power, and foot is only on the brake always). extensive damage to car and garage. both subaru and our insurance company have been alerted.

Within the past 3 weeks, we have encountered an intermittent and recurring problem of being unable to remove the keys from the ignition when the car is turned off after driving, and in "park". car is stationary when this occurs.

Key not releasing from ignition after putting car into park. this is a known problem as subaru put out subaru service bulletin 16-112-18r. subaru states "the cause is contamination of the park-range switch internal components." so it is a manufacturer defect but subaru has not made a recall, costing owners $400-$800 to get it repaired if the car is no longer under warranty.

Vehicle was driven on 10/05/2020 and parked with no cracks in windshield, upon returning to vehicle there was a large crack crossing windshield. no rocks or debris have struck vehicles windshield.

When turning the vehicle off, the key is intermittently not able to be removed from the ignition. rear hatch will also not open when this occurs, as the shift select solenoid doesn't recognize that the transmission is shifted into park.

In november 2019 i had to replace my battery which was replaced for free by subaru in chandler, az and was guaranteed for 30 months, in september 2020, i had to replace my battery again which was installed by subaru in chandler, az for free and guaranteed for 30 months. i did a search on faulty batteries on subaru and found the belows information.. so i decided to file a report. " subaru is hit with a new lawsuit alleging the 2016-2020 subaru outback and 2019-2020 ascent have defective electrical systems causing premature battery failure. what should owners do if you are experiencing the same issues?"

Multiple battery failures- battery dies repeatedly. have replaced 4 times already. last dead battery is today with it having died last week as well. this will be 3rd battery in less than a year.sometimes headlight will dimly flash or there will be a thumping noise that comes from the back, possibly the tailgate. other times it is dead next day when going to start it after having been driven the previous day. keys are not kept in car.

While driving my normal work commute down a straight stretch of road at 47mph—no rocks seen or other cars present—my windshield suddenly cracked 12 inches, for no apparent reason. last week—in a completely different spot—the windshield got a large chip in it from a tiny pebble flung up by a truck. i just bought this car from subaru dealership 1 month ago. it seems highly likely that i will he injured from the faulty windshield in an accident, from a rock, or for no apparent reason. subaru denied there was in issue despite a class action suit in new jersey, and tons of other complaints. despite research, i had no idea this was an issue with my model or i would not have purchased.

Battery goes dead overnight. in 2019 i experienced a dead battery on my outback. it happened in early 2020. i replaced the battery around may of this year. i took it to local dealer and left for 2 days. dealer updated eco and said that should fix it, fail inagain in july 2020 and again today 9-15-2020

This 2017 outback suddenly lost all electrical power. even jump starting the vehicle was difficult. thee service that came to jump the car said they have seen a lot of subaru's needing to be jumped and this was from a subaru's roadside service provider. putting the battery on a charger would not help. i brought the car to the subaru dealership where we purchased the car. they said the battery was bad and needed to be replaced. they did not check the charging system saying it was definitely the battery. at a cost of $165.78 the battery was replaced. this seemed very odd to me that the battery would already be bad after three years. i did some internet checking and found out there are many people experiencing the same issue. nothing was left on in the car but it was not being driven everyday as it once had. seeing how many people are having this issue i was wondering why there has not been a recall for this model and year?

The battery on my 2017 subaru outback keeps draining and going dead. this is the fourth battery gone dead in four years. last one only lasted little over three months. we replaced with brand new factory battery at end of may. today in september 7th. battery completely dead as i try to start the vehicle. last time i took the vehicle to a subaru dealer. they said everything electrical was ok on the car. technician said the back dome light was on. this time i checked the dome light and it was on off position. i believe there is some kind of elctrical issue with this vehicle that is causing the batteries to die.

Bought 2017 subaru outback in late 2019. in march 2020, after letting the outback sit in the driveway for three days without driving it, the battery was dead. jumped it and brought it to the dealership. dealer replaced battery. in august 2020, outback sat undriven for four days and the battery is dead. jumped it, drove it around to recharge the battery, and after leaving the car off for a few hours it will not start again.

When putting my car into 'p' for park, and turning my car off with my key, my key will not turn all the way into the off position for me to take my key out. i have to turn my key into the on position, shift the gear into either 'n' or 'd', then back into the 'p' position several times before i can get my key out. this is such a safety hazard. this happens when my car is stationary and parked, and i am attempting to leave my vehicle. apparently, many people are having this same issue and subaru doesn't care enough about their clients to repair this problem. they only care about their $$$.

The battery died with less than 30k miles on it. after jump starting and driving the car to recharge the battery, it wouldn't hold a charge. after jumping, the car had multiple features that would not work -- windows would not open, hatch would not open. i had a new battery installed on 4/17/20 (mileage 29,554) and they reset the windows & hatch to function properly. in june, the battery was dead again, and i had to get it serviced again to have the windows & hatch reset (mileage 29,971). finally, on 8/30, the battery was completely dead, despite showing no indication of low charge or reliability for some time. i could hear a clicking in the hatch that makes me think there is some trigger there draining the battery.

About a month ago, i began hearing a periodic loud metallic clack-clack-clack when making a left u-turn, which sounded as if it were tire rotation dependent. it sounded as if it came from the front end. after a couple of weeks i could hear it randomly when going from a stand still, and very seldom when braking. last thursday, i noticed that the steering wheel center position had moved to the left, and i decided to check the whole front suspension. tightened a bunch of under torqued bolts, including the 8 that hold the engine cradle to the body. last night the noise was noticeable when driving over and bumps, and the car began to pull to the left when braking. a final road bump and the car sounded as if it was falling apart. when stopping at the next traffic light, the car pulled more noticeably to the left, and the rear end came up. i made it to a gas station, where i inspected both front and back but was not able to see anything. tried to rock the top of all tires in and out and they all seemed firm. drove 18 miles at 25-30 miles per hour, trying not to use the brakes at all. once in the garage, i got under the car and voilÁ... left rear trailing link completely broken. at 74890 miles. the pictures show another crack starting on the upper bend of the arm. by the characteristics of the crack, it seems as if the part had fatigued. this morning i crawled the car to the closest subaru dealer, and even out of warranty, they replaced the link for free, of course after i got the "never saw this kind of failure before" internet forums have multiple reports of this kind of failure. please see the attached pictures.

Battery is draining prematurely.

The battery is discharging resulting in a dead battery. no doors or hatch are left open and everything is turned off when the car is parked. the car can be jumped and the battery recharged, only to have it discharge again after a few days time. this is the third time it has happened over the past 2 months.

8/28/20-while pulling out of my garage, i noticed a reflection of a small pinpoint "chip" in my windshield, about 4 inches from the a pillar. overnight the "chip" grew into a large horizontal, vertical and then horizontal crack that interferes with the driver's line-of-sight. the windshield had cracked previously on 1/2/20 and was replaced at a subaru dealership for over $1000. see nhtsa id number 11297463 filed on 1/6/20.. this is the 2nd cracked windshield in less than 9 months!

Vehicle would not start 8/25/2020. battery drained and needed to be re-charged. no interior or exterior lights were on. the battery had been replaced two years earlier on 7/19/2018 by subaru of whitefish, mt. dealer tested battery on gr8 tester and tested bad. in both cases, vehicle was stationary in the driveway or garage.

The windshield just cracked by itself while not moving. i got in the car to start it and heard a crack. it started at the bottom of the windshield behind the trim and went up the windshield about 10 inches. sense then it has spread.

The car dies very quickly. we bought the vehicle brand new, and it only took about a year before the car started dying for no reason. we replaced the battery, but the car would still drain the battery overnight. we took to our mechanic and he cannot find what is drawing the energy. now, if we leave the doors open for more than 10 minutes the car will die. it is completely unreliable at this point, and i have had to purchase a travel "jumper" kit in order to not get stranded. it seems very random how it will die. it can just be sitting in the garage overnight (from 5 pm to 8 am), with nothing running, no doors open, no lights on, but will be fully drained.

My car battery continues to drain. i was given a new battery despite the car being less than three years old. three months after the new battery was installed by the dealership, the battery drains overnight to the point the car barely turns over or doesn't start at all. even after extended periods of driving, the battery barely turns over despite sitting overnight for 12 hours in the driveway in august.

Windshield cracked while driving in a highway with little to no reason of physical impact from outside. it started as a 2 inch line crack that grow to almost a foot while driving. evidence available upon request such as dashcam videos and photos.

Mutiple times when the car is stopped and put into park,regardless of where, the key will not come out of the ignition. the switch can be turned off, but the key will not come out of the ignition. the gear shift has to be manipulated multiple times between drive and park in order to ever remove the key. this makes it quite difficult to run errands or to take a trip, not knowing if the ability to remove the key will be possible. and, of course, if the key has to be left in, the possibility of theft would be great. car is not recognizing the gear shift is in park. on one occasion, i had to leave the key in the car in my driveway, but this runs the battery down. dealer where i am taking car to be repaired as well as the subaru of america contact, advised me this is a regular occurrence and subaru is well aware of what is happening. i feel this should be put on the recall status! this has happened on multiple occasions since buying the car on june 5, 2020. today's date is 08/14/20. repair will be made monday, 08/17/20.

The battery does not last long and does not always hold its charge. it has completely lost its charge multiple times from the second day i owned it. in less than a year the car has had a drained battery for no apparent reason. the vehicle has consistently lost its charge while stationary. at some times it is off and will not turn on. other times it has been on and parked and suddenly turns off. the dealership service department can not determine the reason.

I purchased my 2017 outback brand new from the dealership in 2017 and in the three years of owning it, i have had to replace the windshield 3 times. i have never had a car where the windshield appears to crack for no reason or by the slightest touch of loose gravel. each time the windshield cracks i have been in motion, on a highway going speeds of about 60mph. the crack will start small and then spread very rapidly within a matter of minutes, thus making it impossible to get the crack filled before it spreads.

Won’t let me remove the key when in park. diagnosis is the shifter plate assembly needs replaced.

Battery seems to be draining for no reason. my current battery is 2 months old and was stone dead this morning(tuesday) in my carport. i had not driven it since saturday, but the saturday trip was about 100 miles.

Battery drained while camping 3 nights in a remote location, even though no lights (including interior dome lights) or other accessories (e.g., radio) were used. we did have the power tailgate open at times, which we now understand is badly designed to drain the battery. dealer (and subaru corp) did not provide adequate explanation for why a battery would drain (especially when only 3 months old). same thing happened while camping a year later, after which we insisted (requiring considerable argument) on a larger battery. but same thing (drained battery, despite no use of aux elect) just happened on another 3-day camping trip this past week. (in all 3 cases, car was parked for 2-3 days with no lights or radio used, but with power tailgate opened at times for access to camping equipment.)

Battery died in 2019 after owning car for ~2yrs as it failed battery load test. battery replaced april 2019. in july 2020, the car failed to start (stationary) again requiring a charge / jump. took car in today on 8/8/20 and it failed battery load test again and battery was replaced again under warranty. this appears to be a common problem with subarus and subaru needs to address as this can leave consumers in bad/difficult situations.

2017 outback, experienced a faulty battery took to dealer in december 2019 and was replaced at subaru of glendale. 7/18/2020 dead battery issue again with the second new battery. have to get it jumped monday to go to the dealer again, car has aprox. 25,000 miles+- can't check exact miles because no power. called subaru roadside today waited 3 hours and the service no showed.

The subaru has left me stranded twice now with battery failure. there is no cause for the battery failure. it happens sporadically and is horribly inconvenient. once, i was alone in a parking lot at night (a woman) with no cell phone. another time it was 100 degrees outside. and, most recently i had my grandchild with me and we were stranded for an hour. it has 50,000 miles on it. the vehicle was stationary with nothing left on.

Two chips in the windshield appeared for no apparent reason about ~10 days after purchase of vehicle. chip # 1 is above the steering wheel and around~ 5 mm size. chip #2 is in front of passenger seat with a clear crack on the outside and inside of vehicle about the size of ~ 1 cm. there is a concern for these chips to continue cracking and destroying the windshield. no rockfall witnessed/no stones hitting windshield witnessed. see attached pictures. also noticed a few other little chips that have potential for cracking. aware of subaru windshield lawsuit, sadly was unaware of it before purchase of vehicle otherwise would have inspected windshield prior to purchase.

I purchased my 2017 subaru outback in may 2017. on or around 13 april 2018 my windshield cracked as i was driving. nothing hit the windshield inside or out. i did have the windshield defrost heater on and the outside temperature was well above freezing (sf bay area cold - which really isn’t cold at all). i researched and found others with the same typical low center crack which progressed up the glass over several days. the dealership declined my claim. i initiated a claim through my own insurance. (state farm). i contacted subaru of america who said they would compensate me the difference after the repair. i got the work done at the dealership after a lengthy fight over the phone with a group sub contracted to handle the claim for state farm. they tried to give me cheap (non-oem glass) i had to fight for oem glass, stating over and over that i purchased the vehicle for the eyesight system which the manufacturer mandates oem glass (what a headache !!!) i got the work done - finally, with oem glass. done at the dealership (by yet another sub-contractor). the dealership then re-calibrated the eyesight system. sofa reimbursed me the difference. (shout out to anthony who listened with empathy then reimbursed my deductible - thank you) the whole affair was a real headache - i was treated like i was negligent or trying to get over. (i am super tenacious - god help anyone who is less so, or cannot be persuasive -pushy). and now i am left with a sour taste and fingers crossed that it doesn’t happen again. i am not confident with my vehicle anymore.

Went to start my car in the garage, and the electrical system was completely dead. a new battery was installed 4 weeks prior to the car not starting.

Battery drains repeatedly, sometimes twice in a day. also rear gate has twice been open in the morning after locking car at night and storing fob well away from vehicle. lastly, car no longer charges my iphone and has “blown” two charging cables, one brand new.

Our pre-owned 2017 subaru outback’s battery died a few days after we had purchased the car at the dealership with 41,000 miles, march 2020. we tested the battery and it needed to be replaced, which we did ourselves. when we called our dealership where he purchased the car, the dealer told us they could not change the battery. the car didn't give us any more problems until this morning when we found the battery dead again. the vehicle has been used on regular bases and it was parked overnight and we are certain that we didn't leave anything open.

With no warning and driving 70 mph on the interstate pressing the gas pedal resulted in nothing. dashboard lights started indicating “brake” and other distracting messages. i was in the far left lane in heavy traffic, but was somehow able to cross over two lanes without a collision and make it part way up a ramp. car was towed into a subaru dealer who found a “broken variation chain”. a new transmission was installed four days later. i no longer feel safe in this vehicle or any with this transmission now that i have read about all it’s issues. why did i not have a warning since it is a known problem? importantly, why in the midst of a potentially life ending emergency did i not get a meaningful dashboard warning, e.g., “pull off road”, “power lost”, “transmission fail”?

My windshield has cracked now three times under circumstances that are unclear. each crack has appeared in the lower center zone of the car and each has reached a diameter greater than 6 inches.

My wife and i were traveling on i-26 east bound, just north of its intersection with i-95 in sc, when we heard a pop and noticed that the windshield had cracked. it was not a result of any road debris because there were no vehicles in our immediate vicinity. *tr

The windshield has cracked for no apparent reason twice in the last year. the first time was in june of 2019. today i was driving down the interstate, and i noticed a small crack coming from the middle of the bottom and began increasing in size and started curving. the first time it happened in june of 2019, i noticed a small crack just behind my rear view mirror coming downward. over a few days time, it increased in size, curved and spider webbed. i had that window replaced by a company who replaces windows recommended by the local subaru dealership where i bought my car. they used a subaru windshield when they replaced the cracked windshield in june of 2019. *tr

When stationary, the rear lift gate opens without being nearby or activating switch. one time after the gate opened, it apparently did not shut properly. after about 10 days, the car battery died. the battery was 6 months old. after restarting the car, gate had to be manually unlocked from the inside. *tr

When the car is in park and i try to remove the key it will not release. have to turn the car back on back up, put it in drive and accelerate forward, sometimes several times before the key will release. *tr

The vehicle's battery drains very quickly and needs a jump start. has been a continuous issue for several months. we have had to buy a jump start kit. dealer said the battery is fine and cannot diagnose the issue. sams club and a nissan dealership have both said the battery was not the problem. *tr

My windshield has cracked without being hit by anything across the bottom near the wipers. my battery continues to die for no reason that i can find, even after i have replaced it. i don’t leave the lights on or anything and i can come back to my car and i have to jump it. i have also been in it after driving it, stopped and turned the car off and listened to the radio and 10 minutes later i go to turn the car back on and it’s completely dead. after i get it going the gate will beep continuously while it is still closed and i have to reset the whole vehicle to get the beeping to stop. i took it to get checked and they told me to replace the battery. when i got the battery checked for power nothing seemed to be wrong with the battery. and yet this continues to happen.

I believe there is a parasitic draw on the electrical system of my 2017 outback (which i purchased in 2016). it has died repeatedly and randomly since i purchased it, failing to start after being parked for a few hours. more times than not now, it has happened when i'm in the backcountry (such as 05/28/2019), sometimes away from cell service. initially, i brought it into the dealer and they were unable to find anything wrong, so i have continued to monitor it. sometimes, it is "just" a dead battery that can be jumped (like 10/21/2018), but on occasion, the car will start momentarily but then the entire electrical system will shut down immediately (03/08/2020). sometimes it is so drained that the car fob won't even work. each time i take it to the shop (dealer or midas), they cannot diagnose any issue - "the alternator tests well, but something is draining the battery." i have even purchased a new battery, which was supposed to last 5 years, and it failed in under a year. i keep my interior lights off and do not have anything extraneous plugged into the car, yet the problem persists - it happened twice yesterday (5/29/2020). i have recently learned that this is a well-known issue for outback owners on various online forums and i hope that subaru is able to do sometime to correct this problem - the reason i bought this vehicle was to have reliable transportation, which, unfortunately, it most certainly is not. *tr

Twice, during a time period of 10 minutes, the vehicle accelerated suddenly when the brake was applied. i could hear and feel the accelerator kick in when my foot was on the brake -- the vehicle was propelled forward. first at a stop sign before pulling out onto a busy city street, then 10 minutes later when stopping to allow cross traffic to clear before pulling out of a parking lot. pavement was dry (no ice, snow, or water). i know that my foot was on the brake and not the accelerator. called the dealer and brought it in immediately. over about a 3-week period, the dealer evaluated the vehicle and had a safety engineer from corporate come in to inspect the vehicle, and the conclusion was that nothing was wrong with the car, and nothing showed up on the vehicle logs/data to indicate a problem. i said i refused to drive the car anymore. we decided to trade it in, and they didn't give us any trade in assistance because they said nothing wrong with the vehicle. however, they did give us $2,500 coupon towards a brand new, 2020, vehicle, which we used. *tr

Outback accelerates by itself randomly. i notice most when approaching stop sign and switch foot from gas pedal to brake. *tr

The car accelerates when braking. only happened twice so far. don't remember exactly where or what i was doing but for sure needed to slow down & as i braked the car also accelerated at the same time. i don't remember the dates. it's been awhile ago. *tr

My factory-installed windshield cracked spontaneously while driving at highway speeds 4 months after purchase. the crack immediately spread to over a foot long. i replaced the windshield with oem glass. less than a week after replacement, it cracked again, while decelerating on an off- ramp. again, the crack was immediately over a foot long. both times, there was no apparent rock or reason for cracking, nothing around that would have kicked something up. both cracks started near the top of the windshield, but neither started on an edge. *tr

I have had two brand new subaru outbacks. my first was a 2015 and my second is a 2017 outback. my 2015 had 4 broken windshields in less than 2 years. my 2017 has had 3 broken windshields in 3 years. all together i have had 7 broken windshields in 5 years. some happen when the car is not in motion and some have happened when the car is in motion. all the breaks begin somewhere around the perimeter of the windshield (up to about 3-4" from the edge. i can't tell what is causing the cracks to happen because there is either no indication of anything striking the windshield or there is a tiny "flick" crack sound as if a speck of sand hit the windshield. i have reported this problem to you before when i owned the 2015 outback. i see that there are now 2 class action suits pertaining to this. hope this can be remedied. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 subaru outback. the contact stated that while attempting to accelerate the vehicle forward after or during a maneuvering the vehicle in a sense where the contact would have to decelerate the vehicle first. the contact took the vehicle to the dealership a total of 2 times subaru of jacksonville (10800 atlantic blvd, jacksonville, fl 32225, (904) 641-6455) who informed the contact that the transmission was a dino flow transmission and needed to be operated in a certain manner that the contact may not have done. the contact made the necessary adjustments operating the vehicle however, the failure persisted. the contact returned the vehicle to the dealer who provided the contact a loaner vehicle. the dealer was not able to identify the cause of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 3,000.

Vehicle bought in 2017. in 2018, battery drained three different occasions: twice, i had to call roadside assistance; third time, another person helped me start my car. i happened on 9/30/18, after parking outside an animal hospital. i took it to the dealership to get it checked and i was explained that the battery doesn’t charge enough during short trips. i opted to buy a car starter portable battery, given the frequency and inconvenience of getting stuck in places. i ordered it on october, 2018. i don’t recall how many times i used the car starter kit in 2019. however, in 2020, it has been already 4 times i’ve had to use it to start my car: once on 04/04/2020 and since then, other three times. once after being parked for a few days, and today, 05/09/20, twice: after stopping, waiting to drive into a ferry, and then, to start the car to leave the ferry. *tr

Battery flat twice overnight two days in a row despite dealer checking out issue and telling me battery was fine. finally replaced battery. now learn that there is ongoing issue.

Sunroof exploded with a fair size hole in it! also, the windshield glass has cracked lines in it. stated with a small stone ding and now has expended to a crack line hald way across the windshield. to me, subaru has a glass issue with my 2017 subaru outback. the auto has all of the safety features, so replacing the windshield is not cheap, due to the sensor cameras. the roof blow out happened while driving it. also, the small stone ding occurred while driving it as well. all occurred while driving the subaru on city streets. subaru did replace the sunroof at no cost; the outback was still under warranty. the windshield started to crack shortly after having safe lite repair the ding. that occurred about 6 months ago.

With car in park, can’t remove my key from ignition. intermittent issue

At 35 months, the original battery in my outback suddenly died and would not start the car. i can jump start the vehicle. after jumping the vehicle and driving around for 30 minutes, things seemed ok & the car started 2 hours after being driven. the next morning however, it was totally dead. subaru service told me i needed to drive it at highway speeds for at least 45 minutes. so, i jumped it again and drove the vehicle for 2 hours at highway speed. shortly after i returned from this trip, i had the battery tested at an auto parts store. i was told battery and alternator were ok, but it still needed charging. the car did start about 6 hours after returning from this trip. however, the next morning the battery was totally dead. i'm currently trying to work through this with a subaru dealership, and have an appointment in 2 weeks. in the meantime, will try to keep the outback in service with a trickle charger, and jump starts as necessary. *tr

My wife came out of work and noticed a large crack running from the top/center of the windshield down and towards the driver side of the vehicle. the vehicle was parked from 6:30 am to 3:30 pm and was not near another vehicle. the windshield was crack free on her drive into work and she did not have anything hit the window while driving. there are no signs of any sort of impact on the windshield and there was no debris (i.e sticks, pinecones, rocks) on the vehicle when she came out of work. vehicle was parked in a small parking lot on the air national guard base where she works.

Windshield spontaneously cracked while it was parked overnight in our under-house parking space. crack begins at the very top of windshield, about 3.5 inches from driver side edge of windshield, and proceeds diagonally for about 19 inches, definitely into driver's viewing area. no sign of rock or other damage anywhere near this crack.

My car is a 2017 subaru outback. since i've had it x 3 years,, the battery has drained abnormally three times and i've had to replace the battery 3 times. i'm not leaving it on and definitely not leaving any lights on accidentally. i only have 23,000 miles on it. battery manufacturer states my battery should be good for at least 5 years, especially at the amount i'm driving per year. so each incident occurs when i try to start my car and it doesn't turn on. the car is stationary and not involved in any accidents. it was parked each time this incident occurred but this situation must be something wrong with the electrical components in the car. it makes the car unreliable. i'm usually stuck in a parking garage at work or home and last time was on the street and had to get a tow to the mechanic.

Twice over two weeks, the car's battery was discharged enough to the point that it required a jump start. the first time (0411/2020) was after a 30 minute car ride, it failed to start on its own. the second time (04/25/2020) it sat overnight in the garage and failed to start. both occurrences required the vehicle to be jump-started

The ignition key gets stuck in the ignition. can not get out has happen on many cars mine and mine daughters. subaru has issued subaru service bulletin 16-112-18r and replace the faulty part but want hundreds to do this. this happens a lot, and will get worse till i am forced to pay.

When the vehicle is placed in park it is not possible to remove the key. this leaves me stranded as i can not leave the vehicle. i was left stranded in mexico. *tr

My 2017 subaru outback touring cracked my windshield.

Windshields, particularly the eyesight equipped models, are extremely prone to cracking, arguably defective. 5 months after purchasing new, i got a rock chip while driving. when getting it repaired it spiderwebbed, requiring total replacement of the windshield. 2 weeks after replacement(at the price of $900), it got another rock chip while driving on the highway. a year later it got another rock chip while highway driving, and a crack has started to spread despite being repaired. depending on how far it spreads, i'll be on the third windshield in less than 50k miles/3 years of ownership. my other high mileage cars(130k and 225k) are both still on original factory glass.

Two issues: - windshield - i came out of the gym to see a huge crack in my windshield. on the very next day as i was driving on the interstate a what i assume a small rock hit my windshield and another crack spread across the windshield. -leather driver car seat - within only two years of use, the car seat is ripped in several places. nothing has ever happened to warrant such rips.

Vehicle was purchased 30 dec 2016. full windshield replacement by subary dealer on 11apr2018, 1 year 3 mos from initial purchase due to a small rock hitting while driving on highway, passenger side, lower corner edge. 31oct2019, 1 year 6months since full replacement, another crack appears in the windshield, lower section, middle of windshield. this time we we had the spot filled because it was very minor and had not "spidered". 18apri2020, 6 months since last crack, another crack from rock while driving on highway, driver side lower corner edge. it spidered on impact to the point that we will have to have the entire windshield replaced by the dealer. this is very frustrating since we have had several difference vehicle brands and this is the only car that has had repeat cracking of the windshield. there must be a design flaw.

I had to replace my windshield on my 2017 outback 02/14/2020 and again on 03/21/2020. i didn't notice any direct impact on my windshield. advanced auto glass in weatherford, tx was the glass company that did the replacement. then the second time didn't notice crack either. never heard impact. but advanced showed me a small pin sized impact area in the lower part of windshield, the part that's black. the crack was too long to just fix. so waited till the crack extended to in from of driver side.

There are two cracks on the windshield, including areas that don't seem to have been able to be hit by road debris (on the very edge, protected by body trim. these were discovered and haven't been connected to any obvious piece of road debris or dings. they were just discovered in a normal visual inspection prior to driving.

While driving on residential road with and not hit by any debris or stones - , windshield cracked starting from lower edge section and then across windshield on passenger side.

Within one year of owning my new subaru i went through 3 windshields. all 3 times i was traveling on a highway while on vacation. each time i had to pay out of pocket totaling $1500. early last year 2018 i once again had to have my windshield fixed.

I purchased a brand new 2017 subaru outback, in nov 2019, windshield crack by itself without any external influence during normal driving @ 9200 miles, got new one replaced on 12/5/19, then after 3 months driving less 500 miles, it cracked again. made report to subaru of america, they deny the defective of their windshield and refuse to be responsible for the replacement cost..

Windshield crack in the middle of the day while driving to work on a local streets street. it's the bay area in cali, so the weather was around 60 f. there were no sign or chipped or anything.

In motion on a highway, windshield cracked. crack could not be repaired and required replacement of windshield. replacement cost was in the amount of auto insurance deductible of $500.

Windshield large crack developed unexpectedly from very small chip while driving on highway. windshield had been replaced when purchasing the car 4 months earlier.

Was driving down the road and a crack appeared in the windshield. the crack quickly grew to cover a large portion of the driver's field of view.

On feb, 22, 2018 while driving south on i35 from norman to purcell, oklahoma the front windshield of our 2017 subaru outback shattered completely. the glass remained in the frame of the car but was fractured into innumerable pieces. the traffic ahead of us was greater than 100 yards and i witnessed no debris airborne before the glass failed. when we arrived at our destination several people inspected the windshield yet none of us could determine a point of impact,either by the direction of the fractures or by an indent in the glass.

Tire failure at low mileage. tires not passing safety inspection after appx 20,000 use. tread down to 4//32. tires purchased at costco . line is michelin premier a/s . multi visits to costco to inspect after two independent tire inspectors stated they would not pass safety inspection with wear bares close to tread suface. costco refused to call failure stating that is normal for this type of tires. the rating was at least 60.000 miles. there was a recent road hazard that punctured front tire and costco wanted to charge for new front tire. very unstatisfied with tires, frequent slipping and loss of traction on snow and rain. unsafe.

Cvt transmission at 35326 miles started distributing power indiscriminately to any of the 4 wheel causing instability and shaking when driving. very difficult to control when driving. transmission requires replacement.

My windshield developed a crack starting from the bottom center, right where the windhield heating element is. the vehicle was in motion but nothing hit the windshield, i just heard a pop and saw the crack appear and in a matter of minutes it was half way up. ended up replacing the windshield with an aftermarket one after subaru of america said they won't cover it.

Windshield cracked and spread at multiple points during moderate temperature fluctuation. cracked continued to spread over the course of a week. the vehicle was parked at the time the cracks formed and was parked when they speak. ambient temperature inside the vehicle was 75 degrees f while driving and approx 40-55 f outside.

Noticed a crack in the windshield. no impact or event caused the event. filed claim with my insurance company. we noticed crack after a couple of minutes driving after stopping for lunch.

My 2017 subaru outback has parasitic battery drain that kills the battery. the car won't start making the vehicle unreliable. this is a routine issue with subaru and needs to be addressed.

Ironically on the same day that i had the vehicle inspected per rhode island inspection laws, i parked the car in my driveway after the inspection. i came out a while later to find that the windshield was cracked. when i first observed it, the crack was about 6 inches long. it has now exceed 2 feet in length. i was baffled as to how the windshield cracked but then i subsequently read about how there were lawsuits being filed against subaru because there were numerous others whose windshield were cracking for no reason.

I parked my car in my apartment's parking garage overnight. when i went out to my vehicle in the morning there was a large crack in the windshield approximately 24". there were no cracks or chips in the windshield prior to the windshield failing, nor did any object strike the windshield when it was parked.

I purchased new 2017 subaru outback on august 2017. however, the windshield was cracked without any reason after two weeks. i found it in the morning. i called to local dealer, but they said that i need to pay over $800 to replace the windshield. to save money, i replaced the windshield on safelife autoglass. i paid around $500, but my eyesight was not adjusted.

While i was in my parked car i turned on my windshield defroster and my windshield wipers. when i did this - the windshield spontaneously cracked.i watched the crack spread across the windshield. the car was stationary at the time of the crack. this is a known issue with 2017 - 2019 subaru outback, forester and crosstrek models. both the dealership (flow subaru of winston-salem)and subaru of america refuse to fix this known issue.

I had to replace the windshield after discovering a crack. the vehicle was parked in our car port and was crack free when last driven the day before.

Stress crack on windshield for no apparent reason. driving on highway, noticed that the windshield started to crack from the bottom center to middle. there is no chip mark from road debris. just started to crack. no cars in front of me.

The windshield has cracked in the bottom right corner and has traveled more than 15 inches towards the middle of the windshield. the cause of the crack is unknown

Two episodes of spontaneous chipping/cracking. first chip happened in the lower right corner when parked in parking lot. this happened before the first 3 month check-up. we choose not to replace it as there was no evidence of spidering and it did not affect driver vision. second crack happened today, while parked in a garage, at around 40k miles. this is a large crack that is arising from the medial bottom aspect of the windshield.

My "eyesight" does not function appropiately since my windshield cracked. turns off and on randomly, crack does not go through the sensor.

Parked the car with no crack in the windshield. warmed up the car in the morning and found a crack when leaving for work. vehicle was parked when it happened. crack is located right above the wiper blade and spans in three directions right where the wiper deicer is located. because of where it is located it could not have been caused by normal driving such as a rock or debris. i believe this to be a defect in the windshield.

My windshield started cracking for no apparent reason. i noticed it after getting ready to travel home after work. my car was parked in a covered garage.

Unable to get key out of ignition when vehicle is in park (in garage or anywhere else). found issue on forums many times. seems to be related to gear assembly. messing with shifting, back into park, wiggling key eventually get it out. sometimes it takes 5 minutes. happens at least 40% of time.

The windshield developed a horizontal crack on the driver side only a year and half into ownership. nothing was observed to have struck the vehicle. the crack was not there in the evening when the vehicle was parked in our carport. it was observed when we went to drive the vehicle in the morning (july 10, 2018). san diego was experiencing average summer temperatures. the windshield was replaced at our own cost, as the dealership would not take responsibility. a second crack in the exact same place has appeared approximately 18 months later. again, there was no crack when the vehicle was parked in our driveway in the evening. nothing struck the vehicle's windshield in the days prior. in the morning, we came out to an identical horizontal crack on the driver's side of the windshield (january 21, 2020). the temperature was consistent with the winter average (low of 45f). as we have moved cities (san diego to portland), we took the vehicle in to have it looked at, as we also had a safety recall that needed to be fixed. again, the dealership claimed that it wasn't their responsibility and that something must have hit the windshield at exactly the same place. the mechanic did not think that anything struck the vehicle. the assistant manager motioned for him to be quiet and then tried to convince my wife that it was a rock.

Windshield cracked and i’m not sure why. started small; stretched completely across within two days. driving it with the crack didn’t feel safe. hard to say if it was happening wile the car was moving or while it was parked since it happened slowly.

My windshield cracked while sitting in a parking garage during a workday. the crack started off about 12", and about a month later spread all the way across the windshield.

When going to park, i shift the car into park and turn off the engine but the key is stuck in the ignition. this has happened every time i've driven for the last three days. the only way to get it to come out is to turn it back on and trying shifting into park again, occasionally several times before it recognizes that it's in park and will release the key.

I bought my subaru outback new from the dealer in june of 2017. since then i have had to replace the windshield three times. the first crack, in 2017 was the result of a black walnut falling from a tree in which the car was parked under. the crack went from the driver's side all the way across the windshield. the second crack in 2018 was from gravel on a highway exit when the car was traveling at 35mph. the crack started at the top of the windshield and grew all the way down and across the driver's side in less than a day. the third crack happened in january 2020, the car was traveling at 65mph on rt 95 when the driver heard a pop and a crack appeared at the bottom of the windshield. the driver had not seen an object hit the glass nor heard anything greater than the small pop of the glass.

Car lost power and engine shut down while at freeway speed with 1/8 tank apparent remaining on the gas gauge and 60 miles remaining on the miles to go indicator. added 1 gallon at roadside and car started immediately. added an additional 15.5 gallons at a station 12 miles from point the engine shut down. this leaves between 2 and 2.5 gallons of unused fuel in the tank at the point the car shut down from fuel starvation.

Cannot remove ignition key when done driving. not always, but randomly.

While driving on hwy 101 in paso robles , heard a large pop. after stopping noticed a crack approx 8 inches long on passenger side about halfway up apparently emanating from the edge of the windshield. did not see an obvious rock hit.

The windshield in our 2017subaru outback has failed for the third time in three years. a crack initiated in the passenger side lower corner wiper defrost zone, and grew upward and into the central part of the windshield. see photo. this happened under routine low speed in-town driving conditions and for no apparent reason except the windshield defroster was on. a cracked windshield is a safety risk. subaru is well aware of the deficiencies in the windshield design and materials in outbacks and other subaru models of this vintage, and the attendant safety concerns the defective windshields represent. evidence of a pervasive defective windshield problem and related safety concerns includes subaru service bulletin #12-19215r and numerous associated class action suits including luong v. subaru of america and powell v. subaru of america. subaru's solution has been to replace broken defective windshields with new defective windshields of the same type that are prone to break again, or to deny responsibility. subaru should offer free windshield replacements for the life of affected vehicles, or improve the windshield design and materials to actually fix the cracking and damage susceptibility issues.

Within the first 100 miles of owning our brand new 2017 subaru outback a small rock hit the windshield going under 10mph and a crack propagated across the entire windshield. when we took the car into subaru they rejected fixing the issue because they said a rock hit the windshield. recently we turned on our front window defroster and the windshield cracked again and propagated across the entire windshield again. we requested subaru fix the issue again because it was a non impact failure of the windshield and they rejected to fix the windshield because they said other sections had rock chips (the section where the crack occurred did not have a rock chip). this is a significant safety issue that the windshield will break with little to no external force being applied to it which will cause the windshield to fail and subaru will not resolve the issue.

While driving 60 mph on the freeway, my windshield spontaneously popped or cracked in my 2017 subaru outback 3.6 limited. it caused a distraction for me while driving as i threw up my hands to shield my face. the crack was about 5 inches near the lower portion of the middle/passenger side of the windshield on the vehicle. the next day i started the car and had the defrost on in cold weather, which i suspect may have spurred the first cracking, and the crack spread horizontally across the windshield. i suspect the glass is defected. it could maybe also have something to do with the positioning of the defrost vents inside of the vehicle blowing onto the windshield. i was quoted over $1,000 for the repair as they will have to recalibrate my subaru eyesight camera system as well when replacing the windshield with new glass. i have read that many people experience multiple spontaneous cracks in their windshield per year, which will not be covered under my vehicles warranty. i specifically bought this car for the warranty as well. i would lose money on my car if i traded it in at this point. it should not be my responsibility to pay for subaru’s mistakes and dishonesty in producing defected glass. i can provide a receipt for repair once completed.

When leaving my garage on 1/2/2020, a 9" vertical crack was first noticed in the top middle portion of the windshield, just below the right eyesight camera of my 2017 outback. two days later, when entering my parked vehicle, i noticed a 10" horizontal crack to the left (towards the driver's side) and an 4" horizontal crack had developed to the right from the bottom end of the vertical crack. the windshield does not appear to have any deep chips that would have initiated the cracks. the cracks are propagating into the driver's view which is a safety issue.

When you hit the button to release the rear hatch it does not open all the time. you get three beeps and the hatch does not open. if you use the key fob and attempts to open the rear hatch is the same thing three beeps and does not open. the only way to get it open is to disconnect battery cable wait a minute reconnect cable then hit the button then rear power hatch opens. this is happened multiple timesi took vehicle to dealer wants to get it looked at they could not replicate the issue. same issue happened again today. sidenote when i enter my pin it comes up on your site is a 2017 my subaru forrester sport is a 2019

While driving on the highway my husband turned the defrost on and we heard a “pop” sound. then my husband said your windshield is cracking and nothing hit the windshield. the crack started in the bottom center of the windshield in the black part of the windshield and the crack curves up and towards the passenger side of the windshield.

The windshield on the car cracked. i don't think it was hit by anything. if it was, it must've been a very small object. i noticed it when i went out to the car one morning on my way to work. i had someone come out and repair it as best they could, so there is a mark at the bottom of the crack where they drilled to stop it from getting worse.

My windshield has cracked multiple times. i had to replace it out of pocket when i believe the windshield was defective.

While driving at highway speeds on clear dry roadways, the steering feels as if i have a brief loss of control. i liken it to hitting a patch of ice and having a slight loss of steering control. i've noticed it twice while entering a curve and decelerating from 55 mph to 45 mph (the reduced speed limit of the curve). this issue happens only intermittently and is only noticeable at highway speeds. we had the subaru dealer look at it and they said nothing was wrong.

2017 outback second time windshield has cracked. first time (11/2018)something very tiny hit the bottom of the windshield and it cracked. the car was on an interstate. the emphasis is on tiny, no way it should have cracked. this time, 12/25/2019, i was in the passenger seat, on an interstate, looking straight ahead and all of a sudden a crack appeared on the top of the windshield. i exclaimed to my husband "the windshield just cracked!". nothing hit it, it just cracked and it continues to grow. this was and continues to be a known problem based on reading i have done. i hoped the first time around subaru had corrected the problem with the windshield, i had a corrected windshield and no longer had to worry. why isn't this obvious problem being addressed? my insurance rate went up as a result of the first "incident". and, with the first one it took around 30 days to get it resolved primarily because of a difficulty locating a subaru replacement windshield.

Windshield cracks and requires replacement following the smallest of pebbles impacting windscreen. this is my second replacement following a small hit resulting in the entire screen cracking from molding to molding, rendering the vehicle unsafe to drive.

In february 2019, a crack appeared starting at the base of the windshield. throughout the day it grew to go across the windshield. subaru said i had to fix it there due to eyesight. in december 2018, the same thing happened. i noticed a small crack when i got into my car. nothing hit it. throughout the day the crack spread about two feet. this all happened in less than a year. i do not think a crack occurred from being hit by anything. i think it’s a defective windshield. the vehicle was stationary both times that i saw the initial crack.

My subaru outback 2017 windshield was hit by a tiny stone at ~50mph speed, barely leaving any mark. however, later on (hours later) a crack started to grow from that area. every several days it would increase by a few inches, eventually splitting into couple directions across a few weeks period. it ended up closing a full loop, at which point i feel it is unsafe to drive and am about to replace it. similar type of minor stones hits never seemed to cause any such issues on other cars i've owned.

Key gets stuck in the ignition. the car drives, turns off, and turns on like normal however, when the car is put into park, turned off, and the the key is attempted to be removed the key does not come out. it only comes out after sometimes an hour or more of putting the car into drive and then into park again. this happens every time i attempt to remove the key.

Windshield cracked while car was parked inside garage. crack was significant and appeared for no reason. windshield was replaced on 2/13/19 and eyesight had to be recalibrated. it is our belief that this is consistent with the lawsuit re: 2017-19 outback windshield cracks.

Key has begun to get stuck in ignition each time i shift into park and shut off the engine. one has to repeatedly slam the gear shift into park for the ignition switch to recognize the car is indeed in "park" and release the key. could create an issue for anyone without the physical strength to "slam" the gear shift into "park" or someone who needs to quickly exit their vehicle and get into their locked house or building. house keys are always attached to car keys, which are inevitably stuck in the ignition. a search of online forums shows this is a known issue that subaru has not made good on and dealers are charging owners upwards of $600 to repair.

On multiple occasions (when starting in driveway - stopped, while driving in parking lot - 5 mph, driving in town - 25 mph, while driving on highway - 60 mph) all advanced safety features are disabled including (but not limited to) eye sight (fab - forward auto brake, acc - adaptive cruise control, las - lane assist steering), rab - rear auto brake, rear cross traffic alert, blind spot detection, park brake, abs, traction control, power steering. note that the failure of these systems does not cause a check engine condition and no error codes are logged. the dealer indicated that the first 4/5 failures left no codes. the next failure was delivered to dealer while running in a failed state. dealer reported no codes found. since the dealer did not report this to subaru i will be reporting this problem to subaru.

Right side front quarter glass spontaneously shattered. the vehicle was stationary, not running, and parked in the garage with all garage doors closed. the date was 09/02/2017. the vehicle was purchased new on 07/19/17 with an odometer reading of 18 miles. cause of the glass shattering is unknown.

Windshield developed a chip which turned into a 12 inch crack without impact from rocks or large road debris. the chip appeared will driving on the highway when the sound of sand or bugs was hear to hit the windshield but was not anything that would result in a chip that would lead to a 12 inch crack. the windshield had to be replaced. cost to replace the windshield out of pocket was $675.73 plus tax

I own and drive a 2017 subaru outback premium. i like this car and enjoy driving it. my car has the full eyesight safety system. on september 27 2019 i was driving southbound on the northeast extension of the pennsylvania turnpike. i was a few miles south of the lansdale exit in the middle lane of three. the road was dry, the weather clear and temperature about 80 degrees. i was driving between 65 and 70 mph. a car passed me on the right at a high rate of speed and pulled into my lane in front of me. my subaru pre-collision braking system slammed on the brakes and brought me to an abrupt stop in my lane. i had no control of the vehicle. my wife was screaming “ what are you doing ? what are you doing ? “my eyes went to the rear view mirror to see who was going to hit me. my foot stayed on the accelerator trying to keep moving. the pre-collision braking system finally released the car and i was able to move again. i moved to the right lane and put my emergency four way flashers on. it happened two more times in the next mile. i pulled over and called the dealership and they advised how to turn off the pre-collision braking system. on october 3rd i took my outback to the ciocca subaru dealership in allentown pa. they kept the car for a week and claimed there is nothing wrong with their eyesight system. i don’t feel safe driving this car.

My wife was driving the subaru in town on a paved road her when she heard a pop/crack noise. a crack became visible immediately and after she took a lunch break and returned to the car, the crack had expanded further into her line of site. the crack started in the lower corner of the windshield on the drivers side. this happened in mid august 2019. we had to replace the windshield in september since it interfered with her visibility. i have a photo which is too large (over 5mb) to be accepted by this form.

Within a couple weeks of having to have our windshield fixed, i was driving straight ahead on a freeway, approximately 70 mph, when a crack streaked across our windshield. we couldn't figure out why, thinking maybe a tiny rock hit us. a few days later we asked subaru to fix it, but they said that's not what they do and sent us to a local auto glass company. they said these new windshields with all the technology like eyesight, etc. seem to make the windshields more fragile. on june 1st, 2017 (our car was only 6 months old), having the windshield replaced, we picked it up to a tune of $1,485.02. i wondered when we would have to be back in for another fix. very concerning.

Car stalled (4x's at least) when making turns; stalled after passing a car when i returned to my lane with high speed traffic behind me. have had this problem since we purchased car. have taken to dealer several times, each time the result was "they couldn't duplicate problem", once they said they adjusted the software to correct problem, result didn't seem to improve.

Our outback was sitting in the driveway since yesterday afternoon. this morning my wife discovered a large crack in the windshield. it's approximately 7 inches long. i've read on several websites that this is an ongoing issue with late model subarus. can you please help us?

My vehicle, while stationary without anything plugged in or running (i.e. ac), has the battery die. the vehicle is a 2018, and this happened 08/24/2019. i believe a battery to be a maintenance item, but being less then 2 years old under “normal” use is contrary to industry or manufacturer standards, which i believe the unexpected timing and nature creates a safety issue. i replaced the battery, and found this to be a common issue with subaru’s; however, never received any advisement or notification from the company.

Possible structural design issue that causes the front windshield to crack. oem windshield cracked suddenly a year ago. the crack started at the very top of the windshield in the center. no apparent stone chips or other damage to attribute this to. about 8 weeks ago the replacement windshield also cracked, this time starting under the driver side hood area, at the very bottom of the windshield. there's no way for a rock or other object to impact this area, which, given the sudden large cracks that appeared, lead me to believe there's a structural stress issue coming to play on the front windshield. as the front windshield is a structural safety component of the vehicle, i believe this causes a safety issue long term, not to mention a sizable annual expense between the windshield and having the eyesight cameras recalibrated for the new glass. vehicle has been on the road less than three years. the 'when did this happen' date selected based on this years cracking. i didn't take photos of last years cracked windshield. current cracked windshield still in the vehicle.

My outback has horrible wind noise. its so loud i cant use the bluetooth phone, nor listen to the radio. absolutely horrible and will impact my next purchase.

Yesterday morning, i stopped my subaru in order to back into a parking space. the car was in drive and my foot was on the brake. while my foot was still on the brake and i was changing gears from drive to reverse, the engine started accelerating full-throttle. i had to press the brake pedal very hard to prevent the car from going down the hillside behind the parking lot. i put the car back in park with the engine revving full-throttle and turned the ignition off. after this incident the car operated normally – until today. today, my car was parked in my driveway in front of my garage. when i started the car everything seemed fine – until, with my foot on the brake, i attempted to change gears from park to drive. again the engine immediately and unexpectedly accelerated full-throttle. as i was moving the gear shifter from park to reverse to neutral to drive, i again had to press the brake pedal very hard to prevent the car from backing into my garage door. i immediately called my subaru dealer but could not reach the service department. after 10-12 rings i got a message instructing me to leave a message for them to call me back since they were currently experiencing heavy call volume due to an increase in recall issues. i called back and got through to someone in the service department and explained the problem to them. they said they were unfamiliar with this problem on subaru outbacks.

Was sitting at a traffic light on a city street, the light turned green and i accelerated through the light and after 100-200 yards, the car accelerated wide-open on its own. i hit one car on the right rear and rear-ended another which stopped the vehicle. all the airbags deployed.

Hesitates for 3 to 4 seconds from a stop without warning. has been occurring since we bought it new jan. 2017. reported to service dept at dealership. told it is the way i drive. reported it to subaru corporate offices. they refuse to check into it and say it is not a problem. i am very careful about pulling into traffic as i never know when this will happen. it also has a rough idle. i know there is a problem with these vehicles in the throttle assembly.

My wife was driving on i-80 in nebraska. with no traffic around, her sunroof spontaneously exploded while driving. there were no warning signs or anything ahead fo the event. luckily the headliner shade was closed so the didn't get hit by glass and were able to pull over safely.

Repeated issues with rear lift gate. including not opening and sticking an animal in the back and not shutting completing however giving the indication of shut. today 7-25-19, i was driving at approximately 55 miles an hour and the liftgate not shut light illuminated on my dash during the morning communicate. there was no safe place to pull over until 10 minutes later. when i got out of the car it appeared to be shut however i had to push on the back several times to shut it. luckily my dog was not in the car at the time, but this can pose a major safety issue if actually came open. i have called the local dealership several times about the issue but they said they cannot do anything if they cannot recreate it they only reset the sensor. this was the final draw for me and i believe the vehicle is unsafe. note: picture taken was when i was at a stop light.

Cannot remove key from ignition when in park. many others have reported this online, and the dealership is charging me to check what the issue is. when in park, steering wheel is straight, not on a slope, the key is stuck in the ignition. can turn it off, but can't remove the key. sometimes jiggling, sometimes starting and turning back off, and sometimes starting, putting in drive, and slamming the shifter into park again solves the issue, but sometimes not. spent over 20 minutes today trying to get it out, drove to the dealer, and it came out without an issue. no consistency to the issue.

Windshield cracks and chips way too easily.

Faulty windshield, i am on my third windshield which has just cracked. the crack always begins in the same place, lower passenger side below windshield wiper assembly in defrost portion of glass. subaru has replaced the glass twice at no cost at 27,407 miles and 45,099 miles. now at approx. 63,000 miles it has happened again. subaru is "unaware" of any problem with the windshields in 2017 outback models. i am unaware of any rock impact to the glass. while in motion on the highway, i hear a pop sound and crack begins to form and spread quickly.

The ignition key cannot be removed from ignition. this does not happen every time, but several times a week. i have read many online complaints where this is happening to several subaru owners. they said subaru is charging the consumer anywhere from $375 to $800 to fix it.

The windshield on my 2017 subaru outback with 28,000 mi. has developed a crack i see that a lot of owners of outbacks are also having cracks develop. not sure if there is a recall on the windshield. the crack showed up as i pulled the car out of the garage i wasn’t even driving on the road. the crack is on the top of the windshield near the center.

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 subaru outback. the contact turned off the vehicle, but the key could not be removed from the ignition switch. the contact stated that the failure occurred for approximately two weeks. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 39,700.

Passenger side rear strut completely collapsed/failed at 45000 miles. i replaced (not an easy job) with same kyb oe part.

The keys could not be removed from the ignition after shifting the car into park and turning the car off. the problem first appeared around september 2019 (approximately 42,000 miles). over the next few weeks the problem progressively got worse, and required shifting from neutral to park multiple times until the keys could be removed. the select lever assembly (part 35111al00b) was replaced with the newer version (part 35111al00c) which fixed the issue. the original select lever assembly (35111al00b) was tested and it had a problem with the "p" range switch. resistance across select lever assembly pins 1 and 2 showed a resistance of 2-3 ohms when the select lever was in the park position. the service manual states that the "p" range switch resistance should be less than 1 ohm when in the park position. this high resistance likely caused the ignition to fail to recognize that the car was in park and prevented the keys from being removed.

After stopping vehicle and putting it in park, key will not return to start and is stuck in ignition.

4th windshield replacement on 2017 subaru outback 2.5i premium with eyesight (43,000 miles). minor impact while driving which i'm sure happens every day to other makes without needing to replace windshield. never had to replace a windshield in this household with 80+ years of driving non-subarus. subaru cannot guarantee that defective glass from 2015-2016 is not being used as oem replacement. went with aftermarket on 4th time. seems to me that subaru glass is defective.

Have to replace windshield for 2nd time on 2017 subaru outback. cracks have been both times on drivers side from bottom up under wiper with no chips on windshield. there was a class action suit for the same problem for the 2015 and 16 outbacks which subaru lost but so far they are nor covering the 2017 models which is has a different windshield but having numerous complaints for the same problem. the cracking both times was first noted when the car was in the our garage.

Can not remove key after turning car off. vehicle is stationary, in park and engine off when this occurs. key stays in column. slamming shift lever a few times sometimes frees it up. subaru claims it's not a recall issue. been happening each day the last week.

We purchased this vehicle used in july 2019 and i noticed that the subaru dealer we purchased it from had replaced the windshield. now its been about 2 months and the windshield has developed a spontaneous crack on the bottom about 9 inches long in a s shape. the car was parked on my driveway when this occured. i believe there must be some kind of defective design on these vehicles. i have read that even 2019 subaru outbacks are having this problem. subaru claims that a flaw in the windshield wiper deicer element causes the cracks on 2015-16 models but if thats the case, why is this happening to the model years up to 2019? the body style from 2015-2019 are pretty much the same. i believe subaru is aware of this and does not want to acknowledge this problem.

The gear shifter does not go in to park completely allowing for release of the key. there is a 'reset' you can do in the center console or they will replace the shifter solving the problem.

Battery dead several times. have had to have it jumped six times. battery replaced by dealer once. i note that many subaru owners have similar problem.

The coolant loose and has coolant smell after drive a car. i had several same reason service. they nothing wrong they fill up coolant that's it. now almost empty reservoir. and it's over limited warranty. it's 36059 miles.

Windshield spontaneously cracked while driving in rainy conditions with the defroster on. i heard a large pop. i was driving on the freeway, i wasn't behind any traffic. the cracked started at the side of the windshield. on my way home later that day with the windshield the crack grew an additional 6 inches. i originally thought this was just a freak accident but then i seen someone else's post on newer model subaru windshields and there are hundreds more incidents exactly like this one. i know there was a lawsuit in 2017 on the 2015-2016 model windshields, but i read enough to believe this problem still exists in the 2017 to present models. this isn't safe. torque news there is an article dated may 5, 2018, "subaru loses lawsuit over faulty outback windshields" discussing the lawsuit, the comments from the fellow subaru owners is concerning.

Original windshield cracked by rock (i think) hit at top near edge and crack instantly ran down and across the windshield. took to dealer for replacement, took all day because the first windshield they installed broke, so they had to put in a second. a week later heard a loud pop, like a rock had hit the windshield and window cracked from just above the wiper on the passenger side up and to the middle of the windshield. if it was a rock it couldn't have came directly in but would have had been lobbed as a straight in shot would have clipped the wiper and the wiper has no damage. there is a very small ding in the windshield, certainly not significant enough to cause a crack that would instantly run across the windshield. dealer will not warranty a 1000 windshield that i had for a week. i don't think the integrity of the windshield is sound if a small rock dings the windshield and causes it to crack. if something of size were to hit it i think it would likey break through and could seriously injure someone. this is a huge safety issue, the glass is defective. windshields are built to withstand serious impact without cracking. some needs to look into this. i've seen many people reporting this online and someone is going to get hurt. subaru needs to recall all the vehicles and replace with safe glass and they need to reimburse all those like me that have incurred ridiculous expense because of this defect.

When pulling into a head no prking space, the engine revved and the car sped forward several feet, hitting a rock in the lawn. i put the car in reverse and the same thing happened with car speeding until i could hit the brake.

In two separate events the car lost power while accellorating at highway speeds to merge into traffic from a stand still. the gas pedal became unresponsive and the tranmission stopped shifting. in the first incident the engine stalled, and in the second it sputtered and almost died during a heavy merge on an on ramp. no diagnostic codes were thrown, so the manufacturer claims there is nothing wrong with the car. in the first incident the car was leaving the toll plaze on the dulles greenway head toward leesburg, va. under full acelleration leaving the toll plaza and effectively driving straight, the car started shufting erratically, and eventually lost power and stalled. in the second incident, about two months later, the car was on a decline on-ramp merging into heavy traffic on rt-270n heading toward frederick, md. the car again started to shift erratically, then began to stall, but i was abke to use the paddle shifters to shift the “gear” of the cvt and prevent stalling. afger about 30 seconds the car was operating as normal. again, the dealer has not found any diagnostic codes, and indicates there is nithing wrong with the vehicle.

Once the vehicle is placed in park, the key gets stuck in the ignition and can't be removed. the only way to remove the key is to place the vehicle in drive and back in to park (with more force). this happens about 50% of the time when trying to remove the key. my warranty is for 36k miles or 3 years. the car is currently at 38k miles.

My windshield was struck with debris while traveling down a 35mph road. the chip immediately began to crack in two directions. i have a extended warranty from subaru that is for windshield protection, which my dealer said will not cover.

I hit a large deer on ih 10 at 75 mph. all airbags deployed safely but conpletely blocked my vision and prevented me from exiting the vehicle as the bags blocked door handles, window control switches and my seat belt release. another motorist cut air bag strips and helped me to exit the car. fortunately, no fire.

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 subaru outback. while pulling into a parking space at a very slow speed, the vehicle suddenly accelerated and crashed into a pole and a second vehicle. there were no injuries and a police report was filed. the vehicle was towed. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer and dealer were not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 20,000.

Fuel gauge is inaccurate and does not show near empty when no usable fuel is left in the tank. we were driving to an event with slightly less than 1/4 of a tank of gas remaining when the vehicle ran out of fuel. complete engine stall (no sputtering/etc. before) at 70mph on the highway, requiring an emergency stop across several lanes of traffic. this is clearly a dangerous problem, and it seems several other 2017 outback owners have reported similar issues. it appears to be similar to the 2018 fuel gauge recall (wtw-82) but for 2017 vehicles. unfortunately, i didn't think to take a picture of the fuel gauge, but was actually paying close attention as i had received the notification for subaru's wud-89 "distance-to-empty software update," so i knew the distance-to-empty indicator was wrong, but given the notice said nothing about the fuel gauge itself and only mentioned the dte software was incorrect, i made the natural assumption that the gauge itself was still at least remotely accurate.

We put car in garage. it was clean perfect condition. the garage is locked and i found a spider scratch which had no visible hole from a pebble. the spider crack was internal so i could feel no indentation. i have witnesses in the vehicle. it is very clear that it was inherent in the window. to avoid possible danger i brought it to dealership. i still paid $100 for repair and i bought it new. also i had scratch protection.

Intermittently not able to remove the ignition key from the ignition.

On march 24, 2019, my husband and i were driving north on interstate 5 in southern oregon, traveling from our winter home in nevada to our summer home in alaska. suddenly, we heard a loud explosion on the roof of our car. the sunroof glass had spontaneously exploded and shattered!! there were no rocks or debris on the road. since we were traveling, i was able to get the sunroof repaired at walkers renton subaru in renton, washington. even though the vehicle was still under the full bumper to bumper 36,000 mile warranty (it had 27,000 miles on it), i was required to pay the $500 repair bill. the service advisor told me that the breakage had to have been due to a rock, and was not covered under warranty. i am convinced that there was no rock or anything else that caused the shattering of the sunroof glass. there are scattered reports of sunroofs spontaneously exploding, and i am convinced that that is what happened to me.

Navigation screen can not see in day time and ignition key will not remove sometime when park.

Windshield developed crack from under driver's wiper up and across 3 inches then across to up to above other wiper then up in half circle and back across the windshield to the driver's side. car had been parked.

Driver front door lock and unlock failed. doesn't operate with fob or key. lock and unlock interior switch doesn't work either,no affect.

The gear shift does not engage fully in park when the car is stopped. this is an intermittent problem. if it is not engaged fully when the engine is off, the key cannot be removed and the gear shift can slide from park to reverse and neutral without pressing the gear shift button. it is necessary to restart the car sometimes two or three times in order for park to fully engage. twice when the car was idling in park it did not engage fully and slid into reverse. the second time caused an accident but no injuries. the car has been serviced regularly and there have been no warning indicators to date.

Car does not start bad battery

Driving on interstate and small pebble struck center of windshield. at the time of impact no visual damage to windshield. drove approximately 5 miles on the way to home when the lower center of windshield cracked. crack is estimated 8 inches in diameter.

The attached invoices are a result of numerous electrical issues that i have experienced since owning the outback. each time i would go for service with key fobs not working the employees were so rude and spent all their time making me feel like an idiot instead of trying to solve the problem. i have left in tears many times. the radio and bluetooth were not working right from day one. when i complained to grayson in knoxville he dialed a local number in knoxville and said "nothing wrong" with the telephone system i still struggle with calls thru the bluetooth. earl duff in harriman has been the most considerate of all the others. however, i find it hard to believe that at 58,000 miles, the passenger airbag is out of commission. right now i am driving with every one of the digital indicators on. cannot use cruise control. the rear hatch only raises abt 1/4 of the highth that it should. i have heard so many good things about a subaru and had to have one. i have had nothing bur disappointment from the mentioned dealers. right now the car is parked in the garage. it still runs but who knows what will happen while i am driving.

In april 2017, just 3 months after purchasing my outback new, i was driving along i-10 in louisiana when i heard a loud noise and a crack in windshield appeared. it began to grow and a couple of months later, in june, there was another spontaneous crack in my windshield that appeared. my car was still under warranty but my dealership told me that this was not covered. the cost was over $600 for replacement and calibration of eye sight. we purchased the oem windshield because they told us our eye sight may not work with a generic windshield. it was replaced august of 2017 - car was less than one year old. well, a year later in september of 2018, the spontaneous cracks started appearing again. and now the crack expands across the entire windshield. i am upset at having to change it again because i feel like this will happen over and over again. it is dangerous and effects visibility. subaru should take care of this.

Touch screen multimedia system freezes and makes handfree calling, voice commands and other functions on screen and certain control functions on steering wheel inoperable while driving. occurs intermittently but has happened more than once.

Camera display does not always display the rear view image while backing up. first time it happened was 5/25/2019.

We were traveling on the interstate and the miles to go before needing fuel monitoring system said we had 60 miles of fuel left. when reached 30 miles of fuel left on the fuel monitoring system the car died as if we were out of gas. it would not start again until be put fuel in the tank. i feel this is a dangerous liability. it just so happened that we had taken an exit and couldn't even make it to the gas station we could see a 100 yards from the exit. we did manage to get the car pulled off to the side of a very busy highway, but it was to dangerous to let anyone walk to the station and had to call someone for help. i heard there was a recall for this problem but we did not receive a notice for our car. i am filing this report because i feel something needs to be done before it happens again. we can't trust the fuel gauge and therefore we make sure it doesn't get very low before refueling.

The key gets stuck in the ignition at the accessory position and will not come out. the shifter also does not lock making it easy for the shifter to be knocked out of park. the car was parked in the driveway at my residence on a slight grade. as i was getting out of the car i accidently hit the shifter knob knocking it out of park into reverse. the vehicle was rolling back but i was able to get back in quickly and stop the vehicle.

After parking, i frequently can't get the key out of my 2017 subaru outback, making it impossible to leave the vehicle. it can take dozens of restarts, switching from drive to reverse to park and moving the wheel to be able to release the key. also, frequently, when the car is parked, i am able to insert the key but cannot turn it to start the car. this started when the car was under warranty but did not become an obvious/frequent problem until just after the warranty ended. i have read on line that this was a design flaw and the part has been redesigned but they did not issue a recall and are now charging me for the new part. i believe this is a safety issue (being stuck outside in massachusetts in winter without being able to leave or sometimes start my car) that they should be addressing. this happens many times each week, and is completely unpredictable.

The car is squirly on snow and ice, feels like the steering wheel has play in it and back end keeps moving. feels like im trying to keep it on the road and arms get tired. this is going straight down the highway. online forums they describe it as ghost walking. it started the first winter i got the car and i am scared to drive it now in the winter and i even have studded tires on it.

Miles to empty (mte) shows 40 miles to go but ran out of gas in the middle of a busy intersection which was traffic light controlled. i was stuck there when the light turned green for the other lanes and cars were coming at me and had to dodge my vehicle.

I am randomly unable to remove the key from the ignition after placing the vehicle in park. it has taken me up to ten minutes to get the key out. sometimes just wiggling the shifter in the park position is enough to get the key to release. other times i have to repeatedly start and stop the engine, and move the gearshift lever from park to drive and back to park to get it to release. the key will turn all the way to the off position in the ignition but something is preventing it from being pulled out of the ignition switch. searching google for this problem reveals that many others are having this problem, and the dealer's solution is to replace the entire shift assembly at your expense if you are out of warranty. that is what they told me, even though they apparently have a tsb on the problem.

When lane keep assist is on at night (uses eyesight to keep you in your lane) the car steering wheel has on two separate occasions suddenly jerked to the right. the first time there had been some road repairs with some parts of the road having new asphalt at some not, and the road was still wet from a previous rainstorm. the most recent time the road was dry and this happened when the car reached and exit where the painted stripe on the right side opened at the angle for cars to depart the interstate to allow for the exit. the first time there were two immediate jerks to the right. the last time a single jerk. each time i had to forcibly jerk back the car back to the middle of the lane i was in, or we would have left the road at 65 mph. i have stopped using lane keep assist - this was very dangerous. the first time i asked the salesman at subaru of champaign about this, and he didn't know about it. after the second occurrence i decided it was a dangerous defect and had to report it. thank you.

Driving on i 29 with no cars around us. heard a pop sound and a crack appeared in my windshield. nothing hit it. it just cracked spontaneously.

Having problem to remove key from the ignition when the can was only driven for year and half and has less than 10000 miles on.

We live in la. we bought our car new on 5/31/17 from subaru of santa monica. at around 6,000 miles we had its oil changed privately in durango, co, where we spend summers. back in la on 12/17/17 we went to subaru of sm for any required additional service. they decided to perform the 12,000 service with 10,107 miles on the car. when service was completed, i drove the car off. it stalled for maybe 5-10 seconds (but didn’t shut down) about 100 yards from the service area. initially, it just wouldn’t go when i depressed the accelerator. i then repeatedly depressed it and finally the transmission seemed to “catch” and the car moved forward normally. later, at my request, my wife met with the service writer (a lady) telling her about the stalling. her response: this happens on all subarus—they occasionally stall for about 5 seconds. subsequently our car has stalled on several occasions with my wife driving. and it also happened to me again, this time after its 24,000 service by the durango subaru dealer on 10/10/18 (see service write-up). as i was driving away, i stopped on a driveway before turning onto a city street. that’s when the car stalled. [i had previously told the service writer about the stalling, but the dealer’s mechanic couldn’t get it to stall.] the two described stallings occurred when the car was stopped and i was about to turn onto a city street. we just received a cvt transmission warranty extension letter (see enclosed) applicable only to 2016 and 2017 subarus (most models) which tells me subaru knows all about this problem and has fixed it on its 2018 and 2019 models. i respectfully request that there be a recall of all 2016 and 2017 subaru vehicles described in the enclosed warranty extension letter so that this very frightening problem can fixed. thank god our outback didn’t stall at a time when oncoming traffic would have plowed into it.

We were traveling with our moon roof closed but the moon roof cover open. we hear an explosion and i thought someone hit me from behind. next think i know glass is falling on my head and on my wife and dog's head. one of the scariest moments of driving i have ever experienced. weather was cloudy no rain, no rocks no overhead bridges. this was truly a defect in the moon roof glass.

Similar to complain dated 12/09/2016 by someone else. about a year ago i was at a light waiting to turn left, my foot was on the brake when suddenly the engine revved up and i had to switch to neutral to return to idle speed. i notified a subaru representative on the internet. this month i had 4 occasions that i had similar experience in a shopping mall trying to turn right into a parking space. this friday i tried to park in my garage after 5 miles drive, and my wife was a passenger, i turned the wheel slightly to the left when the engine revved up from idle of 600 to 2000 rpm and then went to 4000 rpm. i was using the brake and i felt a skid of a tire. switched to neutral and park and turned off the engine. my wife was scared and would not ride in my car. i have an appointment with my wakefield subaru dealer on 09/25/18, i did not drive my car since the last episode. my odometer is 14241 miles. i am positive i did not step on the gas, only the brake.

Twice since purchased march 2017 electrical failures have caused all dashboard warning lights to go on; stability control, anti-lock, various driver aids have ceased to operate, and engine power was severely reduced (although car still ran). first failure was rectified within a few days, but current failure has had the car at the dealer for a month with no prospect of a repair. car was running at the time of each failure. dealer is saying the manufacturer is trying to design a wiring harness or instrument cluster that will work, but backorders are piling up across the country and he has no promise to give me. i'm curious about how long i must wait before i ask the dealer to replace the entire car with one that does work.

Subaru outback 2017 while in motion on highway, heard a cracking sound and with no apparent impact on glass, windshield has now an about four inch crack near the bottom corner edge of the driver side. after a few days time has developed into a length approximately one third of the whole windshield.

The quality of the windshield leaves a lot to be desired. this is the second time in less than a year i have had to replace my windshield. in both occasions, the windshield cracked while the vehicle was in motion. i thought the first crack was caused by a small object/projectile i could not see. then the second crack occurred a few months later (about 5 months apart) around the same spot (driver side) as the first one. in about 30 minutes, the crack radiated quickly from the driver side all the way to the middle of the windshield. in both cases, even if the crack was caused by a small object, the impact was too small to explain such major damage. the first time the windshield cracked, it was replaced by a subaru recommended part and not by an aftermarket windshield. i will use a subaru recommended part again. however, based on the evidence, i do not have any confidence that the problem will not resurface. i think the windshield is fundamentally defective.

Parking gear disengages into reverse, engine running and powered backwards. two incidences in the past 4 months, both on level surface with engine running. required getting control of the vehicle unexpectly moving in reverse. the first incident was on a level parking strip and caused injury to the passenger. the second incident was in our garage on a level surface, and we narrowly avoided property by quickly gaining control of the car. a different driver for each incident. we are very concerned about this problem and the safety issues with the parking gear disengaging into powered reverse gear. our dealer was very responsive but were unable to duplicate the problem and offer a solution.

Bought a 2017 subaru outback wagon 2.5i premium with opt package 14 last feb, 2017. the option package was the eyesight driver-assist system. twice so far, while driving in good weather, the brakes have slammed on for no apparent reason - leaving rubber on the road and throwing my wife and i forward. they apply for approx 2-3 seconds and then - the car continues. fortunately, this has happened on roads that have not been busy and no one behind us. i immediately took the car to the dealer when this happened on 3/8/2018 and was informed they were not aware of any issue that would cause this. this contradicted what the service rep told me on 1/8/2018 when i took it in for the 6,000 mile service. he told me a computer update had been run to correct this. i requested that they download the onboard computer after this second incident which should show speed, braking, turning, etc... when i dropped it off. on pick up, we were told that the car computer does not record this information, they test drove the car and could not duplicate the issue and no defect found. i contacted subaru of america and provided all of the information to them. they advised they would contact the dealer and get all of the details. they later followed up with me and advised there were no stored failed codes and no issues found with the eyesight system and no information stored on this incident in the car. therefore, no issue or defect with the eyesight system and they could not recommend any repairs. this lack of computer stored information contradicts what their own manual says. it states “eyesight records and stores the following data when the pre-collision braking system is operated.” it then lists - stereo camera image; distance from vehicle in front; vehicle speed; steering wheel turning; brake pedal operation…etc. i now turn eyesight off when driving as i have no trust/faith in it.

Purchased our 2017 subaru outback 2.5 i limited in august 2016. as of april 30, 2018 we have had to have the windshield replaced 4 times! each time we were on highways. the most recent incident we were traveling at only 45 mph. each time, as soon as we heard the impact, a huge crack appeared. there is obviously a problem with either the quality of glass being used or the design. we have contacted subaru of america and reported the incidents. and yet, subaru will say there is no problem and no complaints have been filed. we are frustrated and now anxious each time we are traveling that we will have to deal with getting the windshield replaced. today, we again contacted subaru of america and said we want subaru to admit there is a problem and deal with it. we also met with the service director of our local subaru dealer and filed a complaint. he has agreed to forward the complaint to the regional director.

The automatic rear braking is overly sensitive and slams on the brakes anytime i back out of a driveway; unless i come to a complete stop at the moment the tires make contact with the street. the dealer tells potential customers this can be adjusted, but when i took the car in for an adjustment, the service department told me it was against the law to adjust it. subaru claims it's working as designed, but they've never tested it on the road. the only thing they do is plug it in to their computer; and they find no error codes. the 2018 subaru outback is not as sensitive.

Windshield crack in lower glass portion (about a foot long); originated without any rock strike. noticed it while driving one day last week, on a lone stretch of highway in nevada. have seen online tonight that this has been a known problem with several subaru models and years. i should not nor should my insurance company pay for a known issue that these models have.

I had the original windshield in my 2017 outback crack while driving on i-65 back in march of 2018, which i presumed was due to a stone chip even though the chip damage i observed was extremely minor. not knowing about the ongoing windshield cracking issues that subaru was undergoing with their 2015-2016 models, i had the cracked windshield replaced at my dealer with oem parts ordered through my dealer's parts dept. which ended up costing me $500 out of pocket on a $788 insurance claim. now i have the same kind of crack appearing in the replacement window with no apparent stone chip or other cause. i first noticed the crack originate from the area of the vin window in the bottom driver's side of the window. this happened soon after i began driving on a quite cold day with the windshield defogger engaged. since it happened less than 1 year after the first, i asked the service rep at my local dealership if the replacement window was covered by any manufacturer's warranty and he said no, not for cracking. after searching the windshield cracking problem online, i was shocked to read of the number of other subaru legacy/outback owners of similar model years and later with identical stories and with subaru apparently ducking the issue by contending that they are not responsible for warrantying replacement windows. needless to say i'm not happy to read of their dodging this potentially serious safety issue. i guess it will take another class action lawsuit to get subaru to step up.

Not able to take key out of the ignition, key is being stuck 50% of the time. second issue is the engine is making bird chirping noise, it comes and goes but it gets loude!! took it to dealer a year ago by the time i got there the noise stopped so they could not figure out the issue, took in the second time about 8 months ago the service tech heard it and booked me for an appointment. by the time mechanic got to it next day it stopped. this was all under warranty and now i am out of warranty and have no support from a local dealer from where i bought the car. i did some research on this issues and there is a huge problem with this and subaru is not doing anything about it.

I had two significant braking problems within two days. both days were clear and sunny, with no snow, ice or rain. the first occurred when my wife and i were on a local street. i stepped on the brake to stop at an intersection. instead of stopping, the car accelerated into oncoming traffic. fortunately, the driver coming to my right was able to stop before plowing into my car. my wife and i avoided a serious accident. the following day we were coming up to a red light behind another car in the turn lane. i stepped on the brake - carefully so i didn't accelerate - and the brake pedal went all the way down to the floor. eyesight assisted braking stopped the car before i rear-ended the car in front. since it was a turn lane, the car in front moved up and i slowly moved forward. once again the brake pedal went down to the floor and assisted braking stopped the car. i pulled over onto a side street and the brakes worked, but were spongy. for the rest of the way home, about 3 miles, the brakes worked ok. after the second incident my wife and i discussed what happened. we came to the conclusion that we both had similar experiences, to a lesser extent, with the car accelerating when braking. we both thought that we did something wrong, but after the dramatic acceleration into oncoming traffic realized that it was the car. i had the car towed to the dealership. over a few days time they couldn't find a problem and referred it to subaru customer care. it's four weeks since the first incident and they're no closer to identifying the problem.

I have already replaced two cracked windshields on my new 2017 subaru outback with only 8,000 miles on it. each repair using oem glass and recalibration of the eyesight system costs over $960 each time. this is an unexpected cost of ownership for this vehicle that i've owned for less than 6 months. this is not to mention the unsafe nature of recurrently broken windshields. the first windshield break was noticed when the vehicle was parked overnight in my driveway. a long crack started at the windshield heating element and extended 2 feet across. the second windshield developed a crack from the passenger side during driving. i heard no impact to the glass, just a crack extending several inches. the carlex oem laminate windshield is thin, fragile and expensive. there are numerous consumer complaints stemming back to the 2015 and 2016 outback models with complaints of recurrent windshield cracks. this includes a class action lawsuit regarding the windshields. i have not driven the car in any adverse conditions. it is driven on the same roads i have driven for years in another vehicle that never suffered such frequent and unsafe windshield damage.

New type transmission -happens all the time, more so when car is cool. back out on a downhill slope hold brake, put in drive. it takes 1 to 3 seconds for drive to engage but nothing shows when it is engaged. you can however hear the ping of the engagement with window down. if you remove foot from brake and press gas the car will roll backwards 6-10 feet towards oncoming traffic. this occurs with or without the hill assist on. subaru says this is normal nature for the car.

Was turning left into a driveway at resurrection cemetery in monterey park ca when i heard a loud popping sound and then noticed the front windshield was cracked. it appeared nothing had hit it. the crack is located in the center lower bottom starting from the edge and creating an "l" pattern. it is a subaru 2017 outback with 9,100 miles.

The subaru outback, 2017, 9000 mis. seemed to be losing battery power on each start and then nothing. battery is dead. jump started it..no start except every dash light came on. had to shift gear while not started, put in park and hit shifter to start. why is the battery dead and will not start on a jump start? thankfully, vehicle was parked at home when it would not start. subaru dealer told me to bring it in to see if they can figure the problem. i believe it may have a faulty relay. they are thinking it is the shifting lever. if so, why is the battery totally dead?

Lease date | 08/25/17 on 01/17/18 after several days of the eye sight system turning on and off, i notice that a piece of foam had fallen in the way of the passenger camera. i notified subaru of america of this through their website and mike shaw subaru fixed the issue. today, after two day of eye sight system turning on and off, i notice that a piece of foam had now fallen in the way of the driver side camera. i have not had this repaired. both events severely interfere with the cars safety features from operating and, in the case of the first occurrence, the auto braking system did deploy incorrectly at times.

The vehicle has excessive wander. the vehicle has very high steering effort. during high speed (60+ mph) and cross winds, the vehicle will occasionally feel as if it's driving on ice. it feels as if it's slipping and sliding with little or no control through the steering system. also, when executing a turn while driving at moderate speeds, the steering will not try to return to straight ahead as most vehicles do, when completing the turn.

On numerous occasions in past 6 weeks, i have been unable to turn key to lock so car is turned off and i cannot withdraw the key. only by excessive "playing around" with gear shift etc. can i finally get key out. this could present serious problems to anyone. my dealer not particularly helpful-said if not doing it when bring car in-they can't fix. if you go on internet your can see that has been a recurring problem for subaru owners of various models. i can't believe there hasn't been a recall. thank you. My husband was driving on a public street at approximately 35 mph when another car ran a red light and drove out in front of him. he hit her broadside. he was transported to the hospital with a cracked sternum. the car was damaged so severely it was totaled by our insurance company. the air bag did not deploy, hence the cracked sternum from the seat belt. i believe the air bag should have deployed which would have lessened the impact against the seat belt. i have a police report, pictures of the car and hospital reports if they are needed.

Fuel gauge erratic. car ran out of gas at 70 mph on the interstate while showing 70 miles remaining on trip computer and over 1/8 of a tank on gauge. starting the car shows different fuel level from one time to the next (e.g.-shows over full when last started, then it showed 3/4 full when started again. stop/restart the car and gauge shows 3/4 full again).

Our outback ran out of gas on two occasions: the low fuel light never came on, the fuel gauge registered about 1/4 tank and computer said 100-120 miles left on the tank. others have had similar issues and they are documented on the internet. incident #1: 10/25/2017, gps: 38.365669,-82.850853. incident #2: 06/05/2018, gps: 38.519781,-89.707681. both incidents were on interstate highways during a long day of driving. during the 2nd incident i took pictures of the dash to document the gauges. the dash photos show about 1/4 tank of fuel remaining, 100 miles until empty and no low fuel warning light. aaa put 2.5 gallons of gas into the tank, we drove a few miles to the next exit and filled up. tank accepted 13.5 gallons. so 2.5 + 13.5 = 16 gallons, yet the fuel capacity is listed as 18.5 gallons. so somewhere there is a discrepancy of 2.5 gallons. all these details and documentation was provided to the local subaru dealership. we notified out local dealership of the issue on 6/5/18, they had the car several days and said a fix would be out by end of summer. to date subaru and my local dealership have been unable to provide a fix for the issue. so nearly 6 months later and still no fix. this same problem was reported to subaru as far back as 12/2016. here's a write-up from 12/2016 about a person having an issue running out of gas. their circumstances were very similar to ours: https://www.subaruoutback.org/forums/66-problems-maintenance/385545-2017-outback-2-5i-premium-ran-out-gas-2-5-gallons-left.html we were in the passing lane about halfway around a bus when we ran out of fuel ! this problem is a safety issue and needs to addressed by subaru in a prompt manner.

After using remote start and after driving vehicle, it would not shut off. was able to actually turn off ignition, remove key and still drive car. had to pull fuel pump fuse to disable the car.

Battery has failed three times with no reason found. charged then dead next morn with nothing left on etc. cold temp was not a factor. once was possibility connected to the rear gate motor which i could hear at one point,but they found nothing...the car was in the garage twice , and in driveway other times.below date is the latest, the first time being 12/17;milage is at 11/1 encounter

The windshield is extremely fragile and cracks easily. i feel it is a lighter windshield, perhaps to help with gas mileage. one little rock cracked it easily. previously, owned vehicles of older vintage and models never seemed to crack as readily. on highway traveling 60 small stone hit windshield.

Ignition key becomes locked in the steering column when the car is turned off. many times when i turn the car off the keys become stuck in the steering column. it is necessary to turn the car off and on and sometimes even move the car and park a 2nd or 3rd time before the keys can be removed from the column. its helps to turn the car off quickly and then remove the keys…even then you can feel the keys wanting to stick.

Within 6 months of purchase the windshield cracked spontaneously. car was parked in the employee parking lot. windshield was fine when i left the car. when i came out after work there was a large crack across my windshield. started in the top corner edge of the drivers side and extended across to middle of the windshield by the eyesight camera. no impact point.

First large crack appeared just 4 months after purchasing the car in august 31, 2016 at a fairly slow speed (under 40 mph). second crack appeared may 2018. the third and largest crack happened june 30, 2018, again at a fairly slow speed.

Sunroof exploded while vehicle was in motion at highway speeds. not attributed to impact from foreign object debris. conditions indicate that thermal shock has likely exposed defects in the manufacturing process and other vehicles may be susceptible to similar incidents. vehicle was left in a parking lot for 1.75 hours. outside air temperature was recorded at 92 degrees (f). upon entering the vehicle, the air conditioning was engaged and the internal air temperature was set at 68 degrees (f). approximately 15 minutes later, while driving at highway speeds, an explosive sound was heard. the sunroof cover was closed. upon initial inspection, it was confirmed that the sunroof was shattered however largely intact. upon further inspection, it is clearly discernible that the glass is now protruding outward beyond the roofline as a result of the explosive action.

My windshield spontaneously cracked. car was parked. i went in a restaurant for lunch, with car in view. came out windshield had cracked from very top, through eyesight camera, down through middle of windshield in a wide j. temp was in mid 80s. took it to dealership they said it was due to impact. there is no impact mark at all. brand new car. had it less than a year. had 2 chips prior to this, not connected to large crack. been in outside sales 9 years with 2 other cars. never had windshield problems like this.

Came out of work and found a 12 inch crack going across the windshield without a reason. took it to my subaru dealer and they claimed it was a rock chip and not covered by the warranty. this is the 2nd windshield that has cracked in less than a year. the 1st was 4 months after we bought the car. salesman did not tell us when we bought the car that the windshield is thinner than nornal windshields. subaru has a faulty windshield and they won't admit it. i could see if the windshield had been hit with a 1 inch rock but there is no evidence that it was a rock chip other than the service guys grab a pen and run it along the crack until they find a place that the pen jumps and then states rock chip did it. the windshield seems to have shifted causing a stress fracture break and it is a safety hazard. thought subaru stood for quality but they don't stand behind their vehicles. it's like take your money and run. seems that their engineers could figure out how to make a windshield with thicker glass to work instead of the inferior glass in them. tempted to purchase another brand of vehicle that would be safer. i think subaru ought to stand behind their vehicles instead of hiding from the issues.

The windshield spontaneously cracked while sitting stationary outside my office yesterday. the vehicle was half in sun and half in shade. the crack started near the top driver's side and spread downward and outward. the vehicle has less than 7,000 miles on it.

Since purchase on 2/19/17 from parker subaru cda, complaint of shaking front end, wandering on highway and freeway from side to side in a dangerous manner, from complete loss of steering in snow, slush and gravel as of 2/28/17. i have been very specific about the incidence. going in my driveway at least 8 inccidents; in snow or slush conditions, in depts on only a couple inches or less in the winter of 2017. in the summer of 2017 three incidents of complete failure was reported on grave road at speeds of 15-mph, i have had the very same complaint every visit: 2/28/17, 3/23/17, 4/6/17. 9/13/17, 10/22/17, 1/22/17- @ parker subaru cda.

The first of 4 incidents occurred on state highway 509 when traveling with my 12 year old granddaughter in the passenger seat. at the speed limit of 60 mph in the right lane, the parking brake applied itself without being touched. the car shuttered violently as it turned to the right heading for the shoulder and slowed the car to 35-40mph before i saw the brake light on the dash and was able to turn off the parking brake switch located on the center console. 2nd time going 35mph on a local street when the same thing happened without warning. 3rd time on the same highway as 1st incident but at 55mph and by myself. 4th time this happened was right after i picked up the car from the shop where they tried to repair the problem and were unable to fix it. i was on the freeway onramp to highway 509 starting to merge on a bridge when for no reason the brake applied itself. again the dealer shop was unable to repair the car and i picked it up and took it to another subaru dealer. the paperwork states that the car is not to be driven home or long distances. this subaru outback is a very severe safety risk if i keep on driving it.

While braking at an intersection the car would suddenly accelerate into the intersection. this happens often. i need to concentrate on my foot position every time i hit the brakes to make sure that my foot does not accidentally hit the gas also. for your information, i am 6 feet tall and wear a size 11 1/2 shoe.

Hello, see attached pics of our outback sunroof that exploded while traveling southbound on i-95 in ga crossing south newport river in townsend, ga 31331 around 10:55 a.m on 11/19/17. all occupants heard a loud pop and sound of glassing exiting the rear of the vehicle prior to pulling over. i cleared to the side of the interstate, documented the sunroof damage and then drove 40 mph to next exit where i located a vacuum to clean up the mess so that we could drive 35 miles back home. there was a cold front passing through the area, so there were some gusty winds, but temps were only around 60 degrees. we had just refueled and were accelerating to 60 mph to merge with traffic. we were using a sear's x-cargo carrier on top for personnel storage. i have an appt with the dealer tomorrow to assess warranty, etc. the vehicle is six months old. *tr

We purchased the outback 2017 a couple of weeks ago and have discovered that visibility is severely limited when raining and wipers are on, especially when lights are reflected on the windshield. we have researched and have found on the internet that others have the same problem....for years before and for the 2017 models. we were driving on interstate highways and local roads. a heavy haze appears on the exterior windshield with every swipe of the wipers . so, the windshield is extremely glary when light hits it, thus visibility is tremendously impaired. we noticed that beading occurred on the windshield as rain fell and changed to haze after each swipe of the wipers. defrost did not help; cleaning windshield did not help.

On the highway cruising at 10:19am in oct 13 2017, a number of electrical components on my subaru outback froze abruptly. specifically, my on-board gps navigation screen froze, the digital clock froze (on 10:19am), and the heads up display of navigation directions on the driver's hub froze. who knows what other systems also locked up, which i couldn't observe. after i stopped and restarted the car, those things unfroze.

Fuel gauge does not register full when car is filled up. dealer did not repair the first time and problem returned same day after filling up again. have to go back again to dealer. i am concerned that if gauge does not register properly car may run out of gas in a place that could be dangerous (i.e.; freeway , busy road, etc.). car dealers and companies response to this problem seems evasive . i am very concerned that this could become a very serious and dangerous problem .vehicle is stationary or in motion and no change in fuel gauge. does not matter if you turn vehicle or go up or down hill either . happened multiple times now. not repaired as of yet.

I very small rock chip hit my windshield initially causing an 8 inch crack and is now over two feet long. the chip did not even leave an impact mark; if you tried right now to see where the crack started you would not be able to. i reviewed forums online and have seen numerous complaints about outback windshields. weak or cheap is how they were often described. this was a very small rock chip that hit my windshield. this amount of damage should not have happened. i agree with the forums; weak and cheap. i see there is even a class action lawsuit against subaru.

7,180 mileage, purchased new 12-2016. garaged kept, 80 degree temp. we both are 70 + years, safety reliability are major considerations. on 10-21-17, we made a 20 mile grocery trip. auto drove as usual. on 10-23-17, we had m.d. appointment. starter wouldn't turn motor over. original battery came with the car, had zero electrical energy left...i connected my battery charger to the battery posts, waited 10 minutes. dash lights came on, motor still wouldn't turn over. charged battery an additional 30 minutes, and switched charger mode to 50 amp 'start' mode, starter motor slowly turned, and motor started. made the 60 mile trip to m.d's office, and back home, and when arriving home, found out that the passenger nor driver's electric window wouldn't open, to get mail from our mail box. on 11/26/17 i took the car to subaru of jacksonville. three hour wait at dealer, even with an appointment. the warranty repair was listed as ecm update. dealer's work order copy re. windows was " all systems operating as designed." service department mentioned that there may be an additional update required. with our last couple of g.m. cars, various "updates or adjustments" were made via satellite. this technology is certainly available...with bluetooth perhaps, through cell phone ? i made the 30+ mile trip from the dealer home to st. augustine without further problems.

Open letter to subaru and subaru owners. i have a 2017 subaru outback. the reason i purchased the car was the high safety ratings. i came home yesterday, drove into the garage and shut the car off i thought. i apparently did not push the start and kill button hard enough. i am hard of hearing so did not notice the engine still running. this car does not have a remote start. my garage door automatically closes after a preset time. i happened out to the garage 3 hours latter to find the car engine still running. i can not the imagine the cars computer allowing the engine to continue to run for three hours without the key being in close proximity of the vehicle. this is a very dangerous situation. it was well over 100 degrees in the garage plus the carbon monoxide level was outrageous. if there is computer setting to stop this please let me know. richard

I have a 2017 sabaru outback with the eyesight system. in late july 2017 i had to replace a windshield when i guess a pebble hit and it immediately spread a large crack that over next few days covered entire windshield. $678.80 + half day of work lost. on 9/27/17 as i was going about 10 mph entering highway i heard two popcorn pops - nothing hit the windshield- looked over, and the same type crack appeared starting at edge of window. this has spread over last few days to cover most of teh windshield. when the windshield replaced in july 2017, a lady waiting there told me that her 2016 outback windshield had been replaced three (3) times already. this is an expensive consumer defect which sabaru refuses to acknowledge, and they will not cover teh windshield under the vehicle warranty.

Windshield cracked today but nothing hit it.

My outback was purchased new in april 2017. my concern is that steering is imprecise, particularly at highway speeds. the vehicle wanders/requires nearly constant "centering" and does not tend to return to center after turning. i have sometimes felt a fear that a gust of wind or road anomaly at the wrong time will cause this vehicle to leave the road surface unexpectedly.

Purchased a 2015 outback and experienced 4 cracked windshields in an 18 month period. traded the car in for a 2017 outback hoping they fixed the design flaw. now 6 months after 2017 outback purchase an outrageous crack formed on this new vehicle. all 5 cracks began not further than 2 to 3 inches from the frame. so 5 cracked windshields in a 2 year period from subaru outback. automobiles. the dealership and manufacturer never would acknowledge that there are so many other people experiencing this problem. sometimes the crack would appear spontaneously, sometimes it actually sounded like crackling sounds happening in frame and maybe (?) one time there might have been a small pebble hit the windshield. twice i wasn't even driving the vehicle. impedes vision. distracts driver.

September 9th 2017, our outback was involved in an accident on a mixed residential/commercial street intersection, when it was hit on the left front wheel, hard enough to spin the car so that the left rear corner made contact with the other vehicle. the impact resulted in serious injuries requiring hospitalization and weeks of recovery. the airbags & seatbelt pre-tensioners did not activate. after the collision, the "sos" button was pressed, but there was no response from starlink. several days later the starlink concierge called to advise us that the lights were "on" and checking on our wellbeing. they were unaware that the vehicle had been in an accident several days prior, nor did they have any record that the "sos" button had been activated. the cause of the non-activation is still under investigation by our insurance and subaru

2017 subaru outback has 8200 miles on the car. i was at 85 miles an hour 1st time on this car. all of the sudden transmission disengaged and engine rpm went to 4000. gas pedel was unresponsive for 2 seconds. after 2 seconds car slow down and gas pedal was responsive and car was performing normal. subaru dealership going to check what is wrong.

On a bright sunny day it is really difficult to drive as glare from the center infotainment display directly reflects on the eyes, making it hard to see the road. this is a safety issue, the screen should be anti glare. subaru representative replied they could not help it and asked to find after market anti glare screen protectors.

Windshield had internal cracking developed where right under rear view mirror mounting area. no physical contact but the car was parked hot outside for 3 days and defect happened. initially rear view mirror was still on windshield but after several days drive, it fell down. it is definitely safety related defect.

When shifting from reverse to forward there is a considerable hesitation and then the vehicle lurches forward. i have taken it into team subaru in nampa idaho and they cannot determine any problem. i was told that the hesitation is normal. i do not agree. because not only does it hesitate, but the lurch when the transmission finally engages is considerable. i did not notice this until the vehicle had approximately 1000 miles on it. i have just over 7100 miles on it now.

Ongoing problem for 8 months and counting. i purchased a new 2017 subaru outback. from the first day of ownership, the fuel gauge hasn't displayed the correct amount of gas in the tank. after several attempts by subaru service to fix the problem, i was told that subaru is aware of the problem, but there is no software fix at this time, even 8 months later. i never know how much gas in in my car. the gauge skips around while driving. it may show a full tank, but 5 minutes later show 1/4 tank. after another 5 minutes the gauge may show 3/4 tank. a new car without a working gas gauge! ridiculous!

Upon impact, in an accident that occurred on august 20, 2017 with my 2017 subaru outback, the airbags did not deploy. the auto body repair specialist examined the car, & the angle in which impact occurred and believes the airbags should have in fact,deployed. i also had the insurance adjuster from usaa look at the photographs from the accident. his professional opinion was also that the airbags should have deployed. the other vehicle involved had their airbags deploy. any additional information or photos that are needed can be received by contacting jake at 706-258-2950 my claim number at usaa for this accident is 4790053-9 my claim adjuster is chris james at extension 44727

The windshield spontaneously cracked with no chips visible.

Original battery failed about 30 months after car purchased (new car). there was no warning-just dead after parked in garage overnight. purchased new duracell battery from sams club on 1-24-20. replacement battery was dead after parked overnight in garage on 12-24-20. battery failed in 11 months. no previous warning, weather was normal both instancies.

The eye sight goes out at 3or 4 times a wk. dealer said that it was normal. i feel that if the eye sight going is normal, them why have it. when it goes out i will be driving it on different roads.this has been going on i bought the car.

The key gets stuck in the ignition and will not release. have to leave the key in ignition all the time.
