2012 HYUNDAI Elantra

I had two instances where the car just stopped–no power and no movement even though the engine was running and we had only slowed to turn (no chance that it wasn’t put in gear correctly). Then the engine started ticking/knocking. I took it to the mechanic and he said that the engine was shot and would have to be completely replaced due to the same issue that Hyundai had with their 2011-12 Sonatas. Replacing the engine is more than the car is worth. Only 106,000 miles.

I received two conflicting conclusions from Hyundai about my case concerning Campaign 137. I am extremely disappointed in Hyundai\'s responses throughout the past three months.

My car accident in February may have been caused by a defective yaw-rate sensor. The electronically stability control (ESC) system and sensor certainly did not help me, and the ESC system was on a recall in Campaign 137. The yaw-rate sensor was replaced by my dealer, which acknowledged the product was defective.

I contacted the North Carolina Department of Justice about my car accident and safety recall. The department sent two letters to Hyundai asking for its position on my issue.

HYUNDAI NEVER RESPONDED TO THE NORTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE.

I was advised by the North Carolina Department of Justice that I could file a lawsuit against Hyundai to the district court or Supreme Court.

I was driving heard a loud bang then i got home and looked the strut coil fractured and snapped off and was hanging there

When putting the driver side sun visitor down at first it would just make a clicking sound. then one day would not go all the way back up. when i checked , above the mirror on right hand side by the arm, the white plastic trim for the visor is broken so the visor is just kind of hanging. somewhat blocks vision.

Loss of power while vehicle was in motion on highway at about 80mph. vehicle failed to respond to input on gas pedal, and engine produced minimal power. no loss of electronics or steering. from a stop, vehicle produced limited power and speed reached maximum speed of 15-20mph. after 30min, vehicle responded normally. no warning lights appeared during or after incident. reason for failure unknown at this time.

Steering in this car intermittently goes in and out making it impossible to steer the car

After i turn my car on, all of the warning lights go off except for the airbag light. it continuously stays on whether the car is stationary or in any form of motion. occasionally, it will go off for a second or two when the steering wheel is turned but it always comes back on and remains lit.

Just bought the car a couple weeks ago for my daughter. the car was parked in a parking lot and would not start. tried jumping it. changed battery in key. gas tank was full. finally looked on internet and finally looked on line and found a lot of others had the same problem. they said to push the car from the rear. we did and it started. afraid my daughter will be stuck at night leaving work.

Airbag light warning staying on

1 month after purchasing the car brakes messed up then rodors then bearings. airbag and engine light came on and wheel light. i put over 1000 and $200 in this car within four months

I live in missouri where they still have vehicle inspections to renew tags for legally driving. got in the vehicle and started it i then try to use the steering wheel controls to change radio station would not work then tried the other side of the steering wheel to make a phone call and it wouldn't work then i tried the horn and it would not work. i looked up the problem and what i found is that it's whats called the airbag clockspring so there for the airbag in the steering wheel will not deploy in the case of an accident i have researched that my vehicle is not the only one and with this issue it is very unsafe and will not pass inspection in my state

This vehicle has the same power steering defect as other hyundai vehicles covered under hyundai recalls. the steering wheel decouples with the power steering due to a disintegrating rubber component. loss of vehicle control and death of the occupants is possible. problem manifests as a 'clicking' or 'clinking' in the steering wheel when turned, with worsening loss of control of the vehicle.

Passenger side airbag light comes on and off all the time that someone is sitting in the seat. there is nothing in the seat or a person. it comes on and off while i am driving or sitting at the light. most of the time, it does not come on when i first start the vehicle. it was repaired once several years and that was $350.00. that stayed on all the time. i think it is a mfg defect.

On november 8th, 2016, saint paul, mn, my car would not start up. no warning signals came on and just made a "clicking" noise". i called hyundai's roadside assistance when they arrived he told me to try to start it up. the car then came on which was approx. a 45 minute wait. in october 2015- eagan, mn, i was driving on the highway, i felt dizzy, nauseous and had a panic attack. i tried pulling over to the side of the road, the car would not stop despite stepping on breaks, the car kept pulling toward the side of the grass that was surrounded with gravel. i ended up hitting and stopping at a guardrail. the driver side wheel was blown and along the drivers and passenger door was scratched, there was also some front end damage which got repaired. in approx. march 2015- west saint paul, i just got off the highway when my car lost power. i started it up, pressed on the gas and ended up rear ended the driver in front of me. in 2014, maplewood, mn,i was at a restaurant's drive-thru and my car lost all power and steering for about 5-10 minutes. i called hyundai's roadside's assistance to report the incident. in 2014, eden prairie, mn, i was driving on the highway and my car completely lost power and the steering wheel locked up. i called hyundai's roadside assistance to report the incidence. about 15 minutes later, the car started up and no longer needed roadside assistance's towing service.

Both rear calipers were substantially frozen and had to be replaced. auto has 20,000 miles.

2012 hyundai elantra limited has 117,400 miles on it and the airbag light won't go off anymore after starting the ignition.

I have had numerous experiences where the vehicle wont start. i went to get gas one morning and after i pumped the gas and got in to drive off my car wouldn't start. i waited for aaa and while waiting tried turning over the key and it started right up. like i said this has happened about ten to twelve or more times. i recently changed the battery but it happened again several times. someone needs to do something regarding this complaint as i see it is something that has been complained about numerous times.

After out of warranty like 1 months or so the airbag light is on i do a research online a lot of the elantra owner have the same issue after out of warranty same issues come out --airbag light on when i went to the dealer they changer hundreds to just to run a diagnostic. hyndai has such a good reputation, something that has to do with safety like this should be covered for at least 5 years, hard to believe after 4 years so many people are having this issue.

Front left coil spring broke after going over a pothole at very low speed (about 15mph). i've recently learned that many 2011 elantras in salt belt states/areas had a recall on front coil springs after similar issues. i'm concerned that the front coil springs in my year make/model (2012 elantra, also in a salt belt state) has the same issue and should be investigated for a recall.

At approx. 70,000 miles: srs airbag warning light illuminates intermittently, then progressively steady illumination while driving. airbag light comes on after tight right-hand turns, at any speed, then may turn off again when completing a left-hand turn. over time, light stays on for most of driving time. brought into dealership; diagnostics performed. throwing dtc code b148100 driver airbag resistance too high 2nd stage. technician said car needs replacement of both clock spring and driver airbag. no coverage on warranty (2nd owner plus factory warranty expires at 60k miles). airbags will not deploy in the event of collision

2012 hyundai elantra. consumer writes in regards to vehicle driver side floor mat damages and unable to locate replacement. *ld the consumer stated the driver's side floor mat was badly worn. the dealership advised that the mats can not be sold separately. the consumer believed that was unacceptable. *js

The sun visor broke while attempting to lower it into position while driving. the plastic parts that surround the arm inside of the visor broke. the sound and movement of the broken visor caused me a moment of startled, distracted driving until i could pull over and try to deal with it. the visor will not stay up or down. it hangs in my line of vision and creates a driving hazard. it also hangs too close to my head and creates a physical hazard. i bumped my head on it yesterday while at the drive-through pharmacy. the owner's manual states that a warning (with an exclamation point inside a triangle in a yellow box) indicates that a condition may result in harm, serious bodily injury or death if the warning is ignored. there is a warning on page 4-94 of the owner's manual that states, "warning for your safety, do not obstruct your vision when using the sunvisor." hyundai knows that obstructing one's vision with the sunvisor may result in harm, serious bodily injury or death. hyundai knows that this is a recurring problem with this vehicle and several other vehicles, as they have issued technical service bulletins in the past (08-01-029, hyundai recall campaign t64) for the same issue. hyundai knows that this continues to be a problem for several elantra, santa fe, accent, sonata, and other owners. a simple web search will show several results: http://www.hyundai-forums.com/md-2011-2016-elantra-sedan-coupe/130049-broken-sun-visor.html http://www.carsafetyreference.com/hyundai-sonata-2007/visibility_wiper/ http://www.howtomendit.com/answers.php?id=157121 the dealership has informed me that the replacement sunvisor will cost over $100 which does not include labor charges. this seems to be a manufacturing defect and should be covered under warranty and/or extended warranty.

The first trouble started when i was driving on the highway at 60 miles/hour, my car started slowing down and would not accelerate. i had to drive at the speed the car would choose to run and in a few minutes it would work fine again. but this kept happening when i would accelerate the car on highways and i took it in to the dealer who said it was sensor problems. engine light comes on when i use air conditioning, or use the head lights. car will randomly not turn on although battery is new and makes a humming noise as i turn the key.

Brought it in to get my oil changed and they told me i need a new engine as it is the same problem that the recalled hyundai sonata engines have.

My husband backed the car up 3 inches in our driveway and the front coil spring broke, shot through the tire and the tire exploded. we bought our 2012 elantra in october 2011 and apparently there was a recall of the 2011 elantras for this exact issue for cars that are owned in the "salt belt" / cold weather states which is where we live, but the recall was only issued for elantras manufactured between 11/12/10 to 3/31/11. mine is a 2012 which was purchased in october 2011and manufactured sometime between march 2011 and october 2011. i highly doubt that hyundai, which apparently didn't know about the issue until an increase in warranty claims on the issue started an investigation of it in 2014, changed the front coil springs they were using to manufacture the same car just 1 "year" newer between the end of the recalled vehicle date and the manufacture date of my 2012 elantra. i now have to replace both, relatively new tires, and front struts and springs. i believe the recall should include more vehicle years since there would have been no reason for them to change the parts they were using between 2011 and 2012 models if they were unaware of a problem. also, a 2012 elantra that was possible manufactured in the recall time frame should also be included in the recall.

My check engine light came on @ 25900 miles & manual states bring into dealer right away, this was also confirmed with a call to the dealer.. work order states"technical service bulletin" states technician updated electrical control unit, & check engine light went off. my concern why is this not a recall item. since there is a service bulletin put our in this issue.

Intermittent...car is stationary and i attempt to start car with push start and the engine will crank for approx 3 second and then start. i turn car off and hear a tick tick tick from engine. restarts with no hesitation. this is usually after a drive around town and then i come home and maybe about 6 hours later i'll go back into my car and it will sputter again. no solution as of yet.

The clock spring has worn after roughly 55k miles and just being out of warranty. dealer replacement is $300 and airbags will not deploy without repair. this began after going over rough brick pavers and the light is intermittently on, probably about 80-90% of the time. as i understand it the veracruz and santa fe models had a similar issue a few year prior (11-01-052) and online searches show this is a common issue with (at least) early production elantas. while owner diy replacement is possible, it is not recommended due to srs system importance as well as lack of ability to recalibrate software.

Clicking noise when moving steering wheel in either direction. both stopped and while driving. no recall yet but with the number of similar complaints online, it should be. repair estimate 425.00.

The airbag light is on. clay cooley hyundai dealer in rockwall, texas diagnosis was the clock spring needing replacement. hyundai told me "no dealer in the country has this part right now because of a defect in the part. the manufacturer must make new parts that will not be available until june 2017." i was sent away and told they would call me when parts are available. meanwhile, my airbags are deactivated and may not deploy in a crash

In my elantra 2012 the light of the airbag is on, the vehicle has not suffered accidents or strong blows, and has followed the maintenance recommended by the manufacturer (following the manual), (95k miles). the dealer says that the airbag light may come on because some of the sensors are damaged; the cost of the repair can range from $ 250 up to $ 3000. with this light on, the airbags will not deploy. hyundai has a good reputation, and safety should be included in the warranty, especially since the vast majority of elantra owners complain about the same problem. (googling). the solution should be included as a recall.

Engine ticking. brought it in and they informed me i need an engine replacement. they also informed me if i do not get the engine fixed and continue to drive it, it could stall and or potentially blow up. vehicle is under 100k miles, however i am second owner, so it is not covered under warranty. i do have all of my service records, i definitely maintained the vehicle so there is no reason to have to replace the engine on my behalf. have not gotten it fixed yet as i do not have 8k laying around to do so. hyundai needs to recall their 2012 elantra engines as it is a manufacturer problem.

There is a lot of give and play in the steering wheel when you turn it that it does not actually turn your wheels.

Elantra with 1.8l engine developed an engine "ticking" noise at 60k miles that developed into a "knocking" noise shortly there after. main rod bearing failure. had to have engine short block replaced. vehicle had scheduled maintenance that included oil changes more frequently than required. engine would have destroyed itself and stalled if continued without repair. limited search on internet showed many other similar complaints. sounds very similar to nhtsa recall nhtsa reference #15v568000 on hyundai sonata with 2.0l and 2.4l engines.

Engine failure. driving on freeway.lost power. engine light came on. noise from engine. pulled over to gas station. oil was low. towed to dealer. they said the car had severe oil sludge throughout engine. my car was made at the same alabama manufacturing plant as the recalled hyundai sonatas that were recalled for engine failure. my car is still under the 5 year warranty. hyundai of america will not repair or replace my engine because i don't have all my oil and maintenance receipts. i have another 2006 saturn that i maintained the same way and it is driving perfectly. please consider a recall for engine failure for elandras built in alabama in 2012. i have seen online other owners with the same make, model and year have similar complaints.

The engine is making a ticking noise. was told that the lifters need to be replaced and there is too much back pressure. i will need a new engine. several other models are under a recall but not this brand.

Airbag light on dash remained on after start, went out for several moments then has remained on. is remaining on after multiple restarts.

Yes , i have been buying light bulls for my car over the last year's and they go out less than a month time, i have brought more then 10 and the people at the part store said it's a electric problem, but the people at dealership want me to pay 125 to put it on there machine. i don't think that's fair.

Airbag light and tire pressure light came on when i turned on my car. it does go off after driving a few minutes, but always comes back on

2012 hyundai elantra. while attempting to start the vehicle, it failed to start without warning. the vehicle had to be placed in neutral in order to start it. according with numerous reviews there is something wrong with the inhibitor switch (range switch).

Vehicle wont start at times. this happened when i first bought the vehicle and hyundai changed the inhibitor switch. recently started having the same problem of it not starting. dealer showed me where the reset is so i was able to start it and bring it to the dealer. again they changed the inhibitor switch. i was told they changed the design of the switch and hopefully i won't have this problem again. hyundai paid for the part but i had to pay for labor. i'm sure i am not the only one that had this problem.

Big problem with the front coil spring. mine broke and punctured the new tire i had installed this year. the spring broke in half. i was going over a speed bump leaving a baseball stadium when all this occurred.

Air bag light coming on in 2012 hyundai elantra, took to the dealership to have a diagnostic done was told it was the clock spring (in the steering column) was no longer functioning. was told if involved in an accident the air bags will not deploy. this was not covered under warranty period.

Vehicle stationary. shifter in "park". attempted to start vehicle. turned key in ignition - car did not start. radio, lights, air and all other peripherals started and functioned appropriately. tried to "jump" vehicle using two different jumper-cable sets. had battery tested - oem battery, 4 years old, rated at 550 and functioning at 542 - good battery, no need for replacement. popped out the shift lock insert. inserted flat head screwdriver to depress the button. put car in neutral. put key in ignition, turned to start - car started as if nothing was wrong. drove for about 30 mintutes. stopped at a store. attempted to start vehicle as normal - vehicle started fine. parked vehicle in driveway overnight. attempted to start vehicle to go to work - vehicle would not start. repeated the same process from the previous time it wouldn't start and was sucessful. have a video showing the shifter going through all gears - when put into "park" the lights on the shifter completely go out and then eventually flicker back on. please contact me if you would like the video, as a picture would not show the issue.

Car wont start when you try to turn it over. all lights work even air will blow but wont start

My airbag light is stuck on. will be taking to a dealer however have found many other complaints of this problem online. the light will come on as usual when starting, go off after 6 seconds then stay illuminated while driving or go off and on.

I had my car for a year and 3months and haven't had this problem till now i was driving on the freeway i hit a small bump and i've hit bigger bumps and never ever have my air bag light come on, or break light may go out if i hit a bump this needs to be fixed asap and it shouldn't be a fee this is a safety issue and i'm not happy about it please fix this issue

Car won't start intermittently. had battery and alternator checked. lights go on,radio works but car won't start. car is usually parked in a parking lot or driveway. weather is nice not too hot or too cold.

Occasionally while traveling on the highway - any speed from 50-70 mph - the electronic stability control light will flash, even though there are no adverse conditions. while the light is flashing, i can feel that my left rear brake is applied, causing me to have to correct the course of the car. i do not feel safe in this car anymore. this did not start happening until after i received the recall service associated with campaign 137 for the the yaw sensor (which describes the exact scenario i am experiencing now). this has been going on for about 6 months so far (date noted below is most recent instance). in that time period i have had to have my rear rotors replaced, and the brake pads replaced twice. the second time i replaced the brake pads, they had heated up so much from dragging that they had fused onto the rotor, and the caliper was broken.

All of the issues i am having appear to be involved with the components of/electrical connections to my steering wheel. the red airbag "error" light came on (intermittently at first) about 6 months ago when the vehicle had approx 64k miles on it. over the next few months, the horn has stopped working (another potentially large safety issue), and the buttons that control the upward volume and radio station browsing have been wavering between working sometimes and not working at all. i did some research about the airbag and horn problems, and there were many stories from other owners of hyundai elantras of various years with the same issues. in addition, their experiences with dealers sounded very much like mine in that they (the dealer(s)) want to charge a sum of money to first inspect the vehicle and then charge for the repair(s). because the airbag and horn problems are potentially very dangerous, i felt the need to report these concerns. i am attaching a picture that i took with my cell phone on 8/17/16 for reference. *tr

Air bag warning light is on and stays on. i went to the dealer and they said the clockspring needs to be replaced. this should be recalled. there are other vehicles affected, not just mine. my friend with a 2011 sonata has the same problem. i don't know why they won't do a recall...

When i turned on my car on in sep. 19 2018, the airbag warning light turned and stayed lit. now, i have the issue of my airbags won't deploy when in a accident. my car has never been in a accident ever, and now i have this problem that it can be one of two things. the cock spring needs to be reset or a computer board needs to be replaced underneath the passenger seat and reprogrammed. also, it is hard to believe that is not safety concern to neither the hyundai manufacture or nhtsa. in regards to that, when i had a 2008 hyundai accent it had the same issue with the airbags light in the dashboard that turned on. also, when took my accent to the dealership the cost related to that was $2,800 to fix the issue. i feel that if it happened to more then one hyundai car model the issue should be address and fixed.

The airbag light won't go off now after my battery died and was re-charged. i've been inform that the issues is something with the clock spring. most other elantras from this time period are covered under an extended air bag clock spring warranty and i believe the same extended warranty should be applied to my touring. thanks!

One day i noticed that my steering wheel was loose and it was making a clicking noise. one another occasion, while i was driving, my vehicle i noticed that all of a sudden the airbag light came on. i thought that it was a minor electrical malfunction (because my flat tire light has been on for years and i never know when i really have a flat), so i ignored it until i went to use my horn to alert an approaching vehicle of my presence, and it didn't work. it hasn't worked properly since. if i use my keys to lock the door it will beep, but if i attempt to use the horn itself i get nothing.

My 2012 hyundai elantra would stall at stop signs and lights. it would stop and start again.. i went to hyundai to check it out and they said it was the fuel pump. the next day i was driving on the highway and turning off the highway my car stalled out and when i tried to pull over on the side of the road the brakes were hard to press. using all my weight i got it to come to a stop. it would not crank. i tried about three times to crank it while holding down the gas. it eventually allowed me to change gears really quick and take off. i made it 5 minutes down the road to the house but it stalled as i parked. now it won’t crank at all. for the last couple of weeks i’ve been trying to crank it. i’ve had the fuel pump, the spark plugs, the camshaft sensor, and the camshaft position sensor changed and it still isn’t cranking

Each time i hit the brakes then release i hear a clicking sound from the brake paddle that makes me nervous that something may be wrong. this happens every time i use the breaks when driving.

After driving over railroad tracks, the driver side air bag warning light randomly turned on. the light stays on. i went to the hyundai dealership to have the issue resolved, but they are charging close to $400. i am worried that my air bag system is not functioning properly.

Battery draining overnight. brake lights and interior lights going off and on overnight. all of this goes off while stationary.o

Motor ticks very loud uses a quart and a half of oil every 500 miles is not leaking it out but burning it occasionally makes a grinding noise and doesn’t want to start.

The airbag on my 2012 elantra came on at 101,000 miles. took to dealers, they did a diagnostic and said the passenger seat sensor was bad. wanted $1500. to replace the seat.

Sold a lemon law buyback car without my knowledge. from what i understand i was to sign a document stating that i new that i was purchasing a lemon law buyback car. i did not find out until i went to get the plates for my car and they showed me the title. i contacted the dealership and basically my loss their gain. may 2015 had to replace hose and have a/c recharged costing almost $300 july 2015 had to have both from wheel bearing replaced along with tires costing me $800 june 2016 had to have end links on sway bar and cv joint and shaft replaced. this was under the powertrain warranty still in place on the car check engine light come on and off at random times. when tested said it was an o2 sensor. the back drivers side door lock sticks. so i have to manually lock it for my key fob to lock all of the doors. today was just told i need wheel bearings and tires on the front end. i believe this car has too many issues being a newer car. i have never had a car with this many issues. especially a newer car. i cannot get out of the loan because it is a lemon law buyback and the resale on it is horrible. i cannot afford the upkeep on the problems it keeps having. something is wrong this car. *tr

I just crashed this car yesterday, 01/09/2017 on rt. 724 between birdsboro, pa and gibraltar, pa. i was driving with a 50-55 mph on a 55 mph road going to work with almost no traffic. i was driving in a straight line when it happened, i was not even turning.the sky was clear and no distractions. suddenly, the car wheels went left and right and then all the way to the left taking me to opposite side of the road and crashing the car in a ditch then flipping on the driver's side(i attached pictures). my trials to turn it back to the right all failed. emt came and were able to get me out. i almost got killed. i don't drink or smoke. i heard of several incidents like this about the steering in elantra. the car has only 56000 miles on it. i believe the problem is with steering. i felt like there was no steering at all. hyundai motors should be held liable for such faults in their cars and affected owners should be compensated. i don't want to drive hyundai again. (the picture showing the tire marks was taken a few hours after the crash. it shows that the road was clear and clean). *tr

I noticed i had to air my tire up once every few days, so i thought there was a nail or slow leak in my brand new tire, but then i had to start airing it up daily, i then took it to the tire shop, they told me i had to get a new rim because there was a crack on the inside of my rim. by the time my new rim came in i was having to air my tire up every hour. i kept the cracked rim. i was driving when i noticed it going low. it did cause a blowout on my new tire, there is no reason a 4 year old rim should have cracked on the inside. they are alloy wheels. but i had to pay almost 200 dollars for a new rim and then another 100 on a new tire after i had just bought 4 of them. there has to be a manufacturer's defect on the alloy wheels. if the rim would have happened to be on the front of my car it could have caused a fatal crash. *tr

Gear will not shift or move. transmission cable broke and left the vehicle immobile.

Going 60 mph on freeway. heard terrible noise and oil light went on. pulled over. oil was very low. rod knocking. towed to dealer where repairman said engine shot because of damaged bearing and sludge. car still under original warranty: 2012 hyundai elantra, 1.8 engine, 46,000 miles. dealer refuses to contribute any money. wants $6200 to repair with remanuf engine. won't provide form estimate. car cannot be safely driven. there were no previous warnings: no overheating, no oil lights, no noises. all dealer would do is remove valve cover and send pics which it says shows sludge.

Steering gets sticky or stuck. it's not like it gets completely stuck that you can't turn the wheel, but there's a noticeable resistance while driving on the highway at highway speeds. it happens while driving straight and wanting to change lanes. left or right it does it both ways.

2012 hyundai elantra limited. the airbag warning light appeared randomly at first then remained on constantly. over time, functionality of all steering wheel mounted controls for cruise control, trip computer, bluetooth, audio system, and horn were lost. i disassembled the steering column to access and remove the air bag clockspring. i tested the connections for continuity with a handheld meter and found none on any terminal. the clock spring failed.

While driving engine light came on and car started running very rough. took car to dealer and they found multiple cylinders injectors leaking down fouling plugs. needed fuel induction kit and a fuel injector kit. total cost $548.85. *tr

While driving on city street, the passenger side sun visor broke flopping down while being adjusted by passenger causing wife to be startled as she steered the car 2015. driver side sun visor broke flopping downward as i was adjusting it while driving city street 45 mph causing me to have to re-gain control of vehicle. 2016 we have both visors and parts and photo's. *tr

When outside temp. drops below 20 degrees f the washers will not work. i have uesd fluid from dealer and auto zone and other venders including -35 degree fluid to no avail. above 20 the washers work

Since purchasing this vehicle on numerous occassions i've had neighbors tell me my trunk has been found open and numerous times i look outside and its open the keys hung on the wall of my house it happens any and everywhere grocery store etc. its not a safe place to put anything without the chance of being stolen from trunk or give acces to the main cabin cause thats where the backseat release is open season for theft

Random no start. push button start will just make one click sound and not start (this is not a low battery clicking sound). after numerous attempts, the engine will start. one time it took over 10 minutes of pushing the start button on and off to finally get it to start. it seems to happen at random times. it will start fine for months and then just randomly not start. it happened in the past an just started happening again about a week ago.

After it rains, ( in motion or standing still ) water comes through the light above sun visor, soaks the driver's side floor front and back, and goes into dash this is causing corrosion to all electrical components in the dash could cause failure to devices and a fire hazard. the touchscreen went black, so i pulled the fuse only to notice the fuses had corrosion. my feet get soaked making the pedals slippery. i did research online only to realize i am not the only one with this problem. the water on the floor has soaked through the carpet and pad to about 1/2" of water at the highest point. this could cause mold and mildew to be circulated through the car. the car has gotten condensation on the windshield after it rains and the sun comes out. the moisture inside the vehicle is starting to cause damage to all electronics.

At about 100,000 miles logged on the car, the airbag light came on. it would sometimes turn off during bumps but, ultimately, it came back on and stayed on. the mechanic said that the pin and airbag were bad. they aren't sure of the cause or how it happened but the repair (parts and labor) is well over $1000. there doesn't seem to be a recall related to this and it's not covered by the warranty, as far as i can tell. the airbag issue does not seem to have been caused by anything specific that happened while driving the vehicle.

Car was parked and completely off. i put the key in the ignition and turned it partway. all electronic components and headlights came on. i turned the key all the way and it would not start. there was a loud rythmic clicking and each time it clicked all the electronics flickered. jumping the battery did not work.

Air bag warning light comes on and stays on. recently replaced battery so it could just be some connection or electrical issue. dealers claim it's $200 just to check. this should be a free fix even if out of warranty.

A few weeks ago, i was driving my 2012 hyundai elantra (114,000 miles on it) and it started to sputter and i could not accelerate above 20 mph and engine light came on. there had been a similar intermittent probelm prior to this. i had it towed to my dealer and ended up with a replaced coil pack on one cylinder. on 11/4/20, i was run off the interstate by a semi because as i entered the highway, i could not accelerate beyond 20, and then 40 mph and the tacometer regisered 0. i took car back to dealer where they said that the "tech reset adapt.values" ("valves" is what they told me verbally). well i left with the car after the supposed "fix" and 1/2 mile from the dealership, the same de-aclleration occured, and this time when i went back to dealership the manager had the tech run the diagnostics on original problem on his ipad and tech said the coil pack was fine. the manager then had the tech run all system computer checks and the second time around, an error pointed to the crankshaft so they ran all the computer updates, which took a good 20 minutes, and said that likely fixed the issue. i thought the issue was fixed but today, two days later, i was driving the car and the engine just stopped in the middle of the street while i was driving. i restarted the car and drove it a few miles and i noticed again that the tacometer was not working. this is the 4th time i had to take it to the dealership. i asked them why they didn't run updates when the car is in for routine maintenance and he said they only do so when a problem is noted. the initial issue almost got me killed on the highway. and according to the dealership, other drivers of hyundai vehicles are experiencing the same issue. someone will be killed if this safety issue isn't resolved. the issue has not been resolved as of today, 11/6/2020 regardless of what prior svc reports upload states.

For the past several months i have had a reoccurring issue with my 2012 hyundai elantra. about 1-3 times a week, my car will not start. all lights, radio, etc. work fine when key is turned to on/start position but car will not start. it makes one click sound and then nothing. generally, if i keep trying it will eventually start. sometimes it takes 10 minutes and sometimes it takes a few hours. along with this, about once a week my car will shift gears hard. it is an automatic and otherwise shifts fine. i have had routine maintenance completed on time since i bought this car in 2016. i have brought my car to my mechanic several times in the last few months and he cannot determine the problem since the car does not do this regularly. i read online that it could be the neutral safety switch (range inhibitor) so i replaced that. the problem still exists. i contacted the hyundai dealership from which i purchased my car and they have no answers.

I have been experiencing failures from my speed control. it moves slow on it own regardless of how high the meter says. when braking the car shakes and then on its own it goes off and all the lights on the dashboard comes on. this has happened to me 3 times on the highway. the engine light also came on recently and now my car vibrates/ shakes when idle or when it starts.

The vehicle was stationary. my tire was flat on the side of the road in a desert and i turned the car off to change my tire. i tried to start my vehicle and all accessories turn on and the car unlocks with the electric key fob but the car doesn’t start. inhibitor switch is bad is faulty. it starts sometimes and doesn’t start at sometimes. many people have become stranded due to this defect and have reported it on car guru and many other hyundai forums. everyone believes there should be a recall for this faulty issue.

The air bag light stays on when car is started and stays on while traveling on the road, occasionally will go off if car hits bump on the road, but will come back on when car is started.

The dash console continues to go go out to the point the odometer, speed , mileage and other instrument panel information is not visible. when i purchased the vehicle they replaced the dash console and 2 yrs later is needing replacement again.

My car is rattling when an idol. it sounds clunky, that’s the best way i can describe it. it does it at a stop sign, stop light, in park and in place.

Since the day i purchased this car with zero miles it would randomly cut off and it would do that even when in drive like it wasnt getting gas. it would not turn over then after 20-30 min it would start right back up and this started right away and has done that ever since. i also had the o2 censor replaced as well. the tires are awful the suspension is even worse then my air bag light cut on out of nowhere and now my steering column is totally messed up. directly behind the airbag. it clacks back n forth as you move the steering wheel even ever so slightly. if i hit my brakes the wheel shakes and the column rattles and clacks, if i go over bumps in the road or rr tracks same thing, the entire steering wheel shakes violently and rattles and clanks. i have been told by three different shops that this is a common issue with this car and design. the steering column was poorly designed and is going to break if i dont have it replaced. the cost to have this done is almost $1000 and it shouldnt be an issue i have to pay for bc of the poor design. there has been nothing done to the car on my end to cause this and i need help asap bc its my only car and i do not have $1000 to pay to fix a bad steering column that shouldnt be breaking to begin with!

When coming to a stop a pulsating motion, similar to a warped brake rotor, was felt. the steering flex coupler partially disintegrated causing approx. 1/4 turn slack in steering wheel. coupler was replaced on 8/5/2020. i did not suffer any damage,but i absolutely believe that this design is far more dangerous than the toyota air bag design.

Clunking noise when turning the steering wheel either left or right. this happens while being stationary as well as in motion. there is a minor bit of play in the steering wheel as well. after researching it appears to be the steering wheel flexible coupler. i will be replacing it and giving feedback on the outcome.

This is the second time this happens to me. the eps light turns on, the steering wheel gets tight. so the power steering disconnects from the engine. you literally can’t steer. this last time it happened i was driving down a grade at night. if incoming traffic would of been coming i would have crashed into them or go down the cliff. the power steering was replaced once by dealer already less than a year ago. this car is un safe and i refuse to drive it any more. i was able to push it in neutral to the shoulder once i put it in park the car shook and it shut down.

Upon extensive research and collected complaints, i have discovered a defect in the 2012 hyundai eleantra airbag sensor light. it will not provide a code on odm reader to identify the specific cause of the airbag light.

When i'm driving and i come to a stop my car would make clanking noises i turn my car off and turn it back on and it would stop. when it was time for an oil change i changed my oil and one night i'm driving home and it makes the clanking noise again along with a burnt smell i pull over turn my car off turn back on it still clanking and has clanked ever since. i towed my car home and haven't driven it again because when inspecting it, we noticed my oil level was perfect but timing chain was extremely loose and metal shavings in my oil.

The vehicle is rattling it stalls out of no where its very loud in the engine. it stalls at stops and sometimes while driving in the middle of the street. the noise is constant

Air bag light is constantly illuminated engine has a continual loud ticking noise such as lifters noted appropriately 60,000 miles . vehicle is still covered by 10/100,000 warranty yet dealer denies any issues with the motor. this is a known issue in california with a pending class action litigation, but not here in nys

Driving in a 35 mph zone when i drove over a small pothole. the car made a long bang noise, car began to sway side to side uncontrollably. i learned that my coil springs were severely damaged and had bended my rims of the wheels inwards, and thus my rear wheels became deflated. had to change the coil springs and rims, but i noticed that 3-4 months later, the coil springs and shocks are deteriorating once again and continue to have the loud bang noises and car drops heavily after going over speed bumps. also, car is hard to keep steady in areas where there is wind even in the mildest forms, which is scary when there is high winds during my commute in the fall and winter. car will be swaying side to side even when driving way below the speed limit (say 30 in a 50 mph zone, or 40 on freeway). *tr

Dash display of odometer/mpg/et cetera no longer is readable due to dim or missing digits. this was repaired under recall several years ago but has recurred. i no longer can see necessary information about the car's equipment or drivability status. this occurs at all times, driving or stationary.

Swerved to avoid hitting deer car went down an embankment going approximately 45 miles per hour picked up speed going down hit a cattle fence a tree on passenger side ultimately slamming head on into two trees before stopping air bag did not deploy when it should. *tr

Both front shocks have broken during driving and punctured the inside of the front tires, causing me to drive off the road. the shocks did not break at the same time (front passenger snapped first and the front driver about 6000 miles later.) the front passenger broke when driving on a city street and the front driver broke while stationary in my driveway. this vehicle has under 130,000 miles, but has been in midwest winters for at least the past 6 years.

Brake lines get corroded by the holding bracket screws probably because of not water resistant type of metal and start leaking.

Front coil spring (drivers side) failed, ripping tiring open. luckily this happened some time after i parked at a supermarket causing no personal injury. i did see on-line that the 2011 elantra had a recall for similar problem

So my car all of a sudden started making a strange popping noise while driving the vehicle. everytime i would turn my steering wheel at a certain angle the wheel would pop. as i drove the car it would continue to make this awful noise until one day im driving down the road and it popped and the steering jerked my car out of the lane . driving home the wheel was rather stiff and i worried constantly about getting in an accident . my reason for the steering issue is i worry someone will be driving the car and it jerk them into a car coming from the other side of the road which will result in a head on collision. second issue is the electronical system in general. everytime i start my car it doesnt start all the way and it dies out mid driving ., i ended up pulling out of an up hill parking lot and not being able to stop the car at the stop sign because the car died out after i had it in drive. i had to pull up and bump the curb in order to stop the car from rolling out into oncoming traffic while leaving the parking lot. i am not sure if its dealing with the ignition in general but that would definatley be a saftey concern. my other issue is the airbag light will not go off. after a certain milage the light came on and i can not get any mechanic to even attempt to fix it over fear of air bag deployment and having to total the vehicle upon repair. i am seriously terrified if i get into a vehicle accident the air bags wont go off at all and it will result in either a really severe injury or even be fatal from airbag failure .

The dashboard airbag light has come on.

Clicking/thumbing noise when you turn steering wheel either way. was told steering coupling issue, cost approx. $600 to repair. it looks like numerous people have reported. should be recalled by now, especially since the dealership states it's a safety issue!! numerous lights keep going out, was told it was a wiring issue! airbag light on dash on.

My airbag light suddenly came on about 2 years ago and hasn't disappeared since. i stays on at all times. i have hear several complaints from other hyundai customers as well. this is a major safety concern and no one will even touch my car for this reason.

The airbag light on my dash came on about a month ago for no apparent reason and i had my car inspected and no codes were shown. the reason for the airbag light is still unknown and i worry that the airbag wont deploy if i get into an accident. i've heard this happening to several different hyundai elantra owners and i think there should be a solution for this common problem.

One tpms sensor failed december 2018, now the other 3 failed in the span of the last 6 weeks. this is an important item. how do you know if the tire is really low when driving, other than a visual or an air gauge. i’m not the only one with this problem. the first time i was driving, on the last 3, the code showed on start-up

The steering column is making a clunking noise. may need to replace whole steering column in case it goes out.

While driving on the highway at 65 mph the car went over a small bump and driver felt an odd vibrating feel from the car. there was a huge amount of white smoke visible in rear view mirror behind the car. driver pulled over and found the driver side strut coil spring had burst thru the strut mount and was rubbing against the tire sidewall of the tire. driver replaced the tire with the dough nut spare tire, which was small enough to avoid the extended spring, and carefully drove home. driver replaced the strut himself as car had 170k miles and out of warrenty.

Stability control malfunction, i lose control and the brake applied unexpectedly and the crash my car i am ok but i have damage in my car. i went to dealer for this recall and they did not fixed now i dont know if they are going to pay for it

The engine started making a significant knocking sound , the vehicle only has 111000 miles on it, and the repair quotes are $6,500 which is almost what the vehicle was worth.

I was slowly going into my parking spot and the car suddenly accelerated and lurched forward. i tried to brake, didn't seem to do any good. it hit concrete protecting a street light and was smashed up and stopped. it was terrifying. i the car did this on it's own. i know where my feet were and i was in good shoes. i'm a classically trained professional ballet dancer and i know where my feet are in space and what they are doing. i did not accelerate, the car did it on its own like that amos episode in doctor who. it was terrifying, this car should be looked into. it happened two other times, but it did it and then stopped. this time it stopped when it hit the object. the cars i had before never did this. there is a problem with this car and i was lucky i was in a safe place.

My 2012 hyundai elantra has started with loose steering and a loud clunking noise each time the wheel is turned either way. i have contacted the dealership and they said my warranty is not covered.  i have read a number of complaints about the same problem from other owners. i have also asked multiple of mechanics and they have said the same thing that hyundai elantras are know for steering wheel problems. the dealership wants $135.00 to look at it, i'm sure it's a manufacturing problem and should be recalled or covered. this occurs when in motion or stationary. if your on the highway going at a high speed it feels unsafe and your putting your family at risk.

This vehicle i have to the mechanic several times this year and it fixed the yellow light goes off for two months or so and comes back on again. this has been going on for the past year.

Airbag light came on for no reason and won’t shut off. have not been in an accident, not have i hit any pot holes. no explaination

When trying to steer straight especially at highway speeds the steering is difficult to move the slight amount necessary to continue going straight.

Airbag light on even when in motion.no incident or accidents happen.it wont turn off even after minutes of start up.

On 10/28/19 i was driving when out of nowhere the airbag light on the dashboard turned on after a few minutes it turned off and then it turned back on. i wasn't in any car accident and i'm currently using my car with the light on. on a different occasion, i also have taken the car in for a clinking noise when steering and the dealership swore to never hear the noise now my car is out of warranty and it stills making that noise. it was the same noise it made when the right axle in my car had to be replaced. as well, as changing the harness on my rear lights because the brake lights kept burning out and i was constantly changing them out.

While driving, my airbag light came on. i was not in an accident nor did i drive over any bumps in the road. it goes off, then comes back on again.

Grinding noise when applying brakes in 2012 hyundai elantra after just 22000 miles. mechanic smooted rotors but said the calipers are not functioning properly and it would happen again. happened a few months later and in checking online found literally thousands of similar complaints. most of us are concerned that the brakes can't possibly be functioning properly. in particular i try to leave a great distance just in case a sudden stop is needed and the brakes don't work like they should. every person on the forum is getting the same line from the hyundai dealers, it's your rotors and pads, not covered by warranty, we are replacing our rotors and pads only to have them ruined within a few months. my independent mechanic (not affiliated with the hyundai dealer) insists that the calipers are the problem, they are not functioning properly and are ruining the rotors and pads. the calipers just happen to cost $700 for the part alone, and i'm sure labor would be steep. in addition, if it was the calipers, those would be covered by our warranties. it really appears that hyundai has bad brake calipers on it 2012 and 2013 elantras and they are unwilling to acknowledge the problem and perhaps are hoping to put us all off until the calipers are no longer under warranty. my concern is there are a lot of us out there driving around like this and what happens when an urgent stop is needed and the brakes don't function properly. this could have very dire consequences. *js

While traveling on a city street at about 20 mph, i hit a pothole with my 2012 hyundai elantra and the car came to a stop, afterward the tire burst. noise was a loud rubbing sound coming from the front passenger wheel. a defective strut coil/spring ripped and cut through the inner side wall of the tire. aaa towed my car to one of their repair shops. total cost of new struts and tire was $895.

Going over a standard low grade speed bump. my driver side coil spring snapped. this was replaced by the dealer under warranty. should they have done the passenger side preventively?

After about 60,000 miles all of my exterior lights are constantly going out completely. within the last six months i have changed my brake lights at least 8 times. my head lights have been changed about four times and my high beams both went out at the same time. one day i was driving on the inner state and all my back exterior lights went out. some days they may work if i have the lights position in the on position instead of automatic daylight position and vice versa. this started happening roughly around the end of 2017 and over time it has gotten worse.this is very unsafe to operate a vehicle and all your lights go out not to mention its expensive to continue to replace bulbs that won't work beyond a month.

The back end sways significantly back and forth whenever the car goes over an uneven bump in the road (as long as both sides don't hit at the exact same time). i've done research on the issue, and found that there are hundreds of reports/forums all reporting the same problem. many people are reporting complete loss of control leading to crashes, which i do not find hard to believe. it takes an effort, with good driving conditions to keep the vehicle from swerving. i can only imagine how easy it would be to lose control and go into a spin during rainy or snowy conditions.

I am the 2nd owner of the vehicle. this vehicle started the infamous 'ticking or knocking' sound in january this year when it was very cold. at first i thought it would go away after the engine warms up but it continued to get worse with time. the ticking sound became very loud and annoying. i took it to couple of reliable mechanics to take a look and get an idea of what's wrong with the engine. they both told me separately that one of the pistons is not working properly and in order to fix this issue i have to have my engine replaced.i was also told that this is a 'known issue' with elantras 2012-16. anyways i took it to hyundai dealership here in chantilly, virginia. they looked at it and finally told me that it is out of warranty and it will cost me $8000 to put a new engine and about $4000 or so to replace with used engine. this is shocking given that hyundai is well aware of the faulty engine design and lots of people have already complained about the ticking problem yet there is no recall !!!

Steering is extremely difficult to turn while driving and making loud thud and clicking noises. i understand the rubber coupling may be to blame and hyundai refuses to pay for cost of repair. this should be a recall as it’s placing people’s lives in danger. i drive with my 1-year-old son in this dangerous situation. it’s appalling that hyundai has not recalled this problem with the immense amount of documented complaints.

As i backed out of a parking place and attempted to stop the car in reverse to check the area behind me, the car stalled out completely, the engine stopped and the brakes would not respond and seemed stuck. i put the car back in park and turned it off, then finally on the third try, the engine engaged and i had control of the car, moved back into the parking place and then managed to back out normally and proceed.

I've had my car for 4 years. and the last three years it started having issues. hard shifting and shaking at random times engine light coming on and off. i've taken it to the shop countless times and only recently was given a diagnosed with a transmission sensor reading too hot. before that every mechanic said they couldn't see any issue . i find it alarming though because we don't really know if it's the sensor or actually the transmission and it's frustrating that nobody seems to have had any answers for the last so many years. it seems like it's a very common issue. and something that should have been able to be pinpointed and resolved much sooner. a few months ago when it would shift abruptly it was definitely a safety hazard on the road. currently it's not lunging as dramatically. however it's still difficult to drive. i have kept up on all the maintenance religiously including flushing the transmission fluid and replacing it as directed. i definitely think that it should be investigated because everyone i know that has a hyundai elantra has had the exact same issue. and it definitely could cause accidents especially for inexperienced drivers.

My 2012 hyundai elantra started making a ticking/ knocking noise in the engine. i googled the problem and found that many people were having the same issue. it was a missed step when building the engine. the noise is called piston slap. it's happening to a lot of hyundai's from 2011-2016 elantra and sonatas. hyundai didn't do a recall because they don't want to foot the cost of replacing the engines. i took my car to hyundai of south brunswick nj on 7/3/19 no one called me until 7/9/19 i called everyday 3-4 times a day and kept being transfered to leave voice mails, i left messages and no one called me back. on 7/9/19 i was called and told it would cost me 6,766.00 to replace my engine. i believe hyundai should be responsible for the engine when they're aware of this issue and have not done a recall. the problem happened just starting the car one morning and the noise got louder each day.

Parking brake warning light indicator on the dash board display: the parking brake warning light does not always display when the parking brake is engaged. this problem is intermittent and often causes a problem with driving. when the light does not display while the parking brake is indeed "on" the driver is not alerted by the warning light and expects to be able to drive the vehicle in the drive or reverse position. the causes a dangerous situation whereby pressing on the accelerator does not move the car as intended. it will not move from a stopped position, moves very slowly or lurches.

My vehicle has less than 100k miles on it. i have been driving it without any issues and getting routine checkups and oil changes. i was driving my vehicle down the road (almost on the highway) and during my drive my engine blew out and the car immediately stopped. due to being a second owner of the vehicle, i am not covered under the factory warranty under 100k miles. after much research, it seem that both hyundai and kia have engine issues; however, only certain makes/models are covered when elantras also have the same issues.

Airbag light on intermittently. the dealer refuses to look into it, unless i pay fee for assessment. i see lot of complaints online regarding 2012 elantra having same problem. some of them have official recalls, but my vin doesn't show any recall, so dealer is not looking into it without me paying for it.

Been taking to dealership for this a few times was told no problem. took car to sears they informed me of a “recall” for this issue. it’s in fact not a recall just something hyundai added to the warranty. i had to have sears tell me so i can tell the dealership. my car is at 99,000 miles and i believe dealership was waiting for 100k to tell me the problem so they could charge me. description below: the mdps (motor driven power steering) assembly contains a flexible rubber coupling which may wear over time resulting in a slight "clicking" or "thud" type noise when turning the steering wheel. wear of the coupling does not affect the ability to steer or control the vehicle and is not a safety issue.

Takata recall: my car will rev the engine really high over and over again on its own rather than idle while in park. also while in drive and the break pressed, the engine will rev on its own likes its trying to move forward without me pressing the gas pedal. this is dangerous. this has happened on multiple occassions not just what is noted below.

Intermittent engine ignition failure. engine does not start when gear shift is in park and key is properly inserted and turned. grinding noise and engine does not start. problem occurs up to five times per week upon attempting to start the car. the issue began in april 2018 and is ongoing on a weekly basis. the defect has resulted in unreliable transportation. i replaced the ignition coils and ignition plate was cleaned. problem was not resolved. mechanic cannot identify the defect. similar issues have been reported with hyundai sonatas, resulting in a recall. many complaints about intermittent hyundai elantra 2012 ignition failure can be found online.

Trying to figure out how to reset or get the airbag sensor to turn off. it came on for no reason, i was not in a accident. it is faulty. the dealer gave me a repair quote that was ridiculous - over $3000. lots of people are having this problem (see online), this should be under warranty for at least 5 years. this is a safety feature i thought i would send a message.

On about 3/23/2016 i was driving at highway speed on i-287 on my morning commute when my sunroof exploded, raining glass down upon me. i assumed it was hit by a rock until i read about the exploding sunroof problem. my insurance company (geico) paid $1,323 to replace the sunroof.

Early sunday morning, on march 23, 2013, just three days before i am to have an anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (which is the result of a previous auto accident) a drunk driver runs a red light. t-boning our 2012 hyundai elantra. the impact causes the 2012 elantra to spin through the intersection, coming to rest in its original direction on the left side of the street, just a few feet shy of a large tree. no airbags deployed.

In june 2012 a truck making a left turn into oncoming traffic is t-boned by me in a 2012 hyundai elantra. the truck was hit so hard it rocked over onto its driver side wheels before coming to rest on all four. i learned later the impact broke the rear axle. that said, my front airbags did not deploy.

I have had a few incidents where my car sudden accelerates when i am not pressing the accelerator.

The vehicle has constant intermittent start up issues where you get a click when trying to start the car. this is very dangerous because of what if the car randomly cuts out while driving? the fact that they chanted the battery size has created concerns of potential fires with the vehicle as the faulty wiring mixed with a battery size that just a year later hyundai changed could lead to a significant issue. there are thousands of complaints about this issue and the fact hyundai is charging people hundreds of dollars for "fixes" that within hours of completion are rendered worthless is unacceptable. this issue is widely seen online for this year model but hyundai refuses to acknowledge. even spoke to a parts manager from hyundai and they acknowledged the issue with this model in particular as it was the first of the new body style and that by the 2013 model they had made changes to the battery size and connectors which corrected the issue for future models.

My engine has very loud ticking sounds. as well when i go to shift my car back into park the engine revs erratically. while sitting idling it goes lower and higher.

I was driving through a store parking lot and went over a speed bump. my front suspension collapsed. luckily i was close to a car repair place and was able to get it there through burning rubber and incredibly loud noise. i bought the tires a month prior. whole front suspension was replaced.

Both visors - mechanism inside exploded now visors stuck in odd position where does not block sun and hits you in the forehead if you have an accident it would kill you .. this is defect in plastic mechanism that holds the visor .. i can see online thousands have the same issue.. defective mechanism in visor.,

I have 2012 hyundai elantra gls with 1.8 l dohc engine. when cold started, the engine produces ticking/knocking noise which quiets down after running for 15 minutes. but, i observed that it is getting louder and louder and the noise is also not getting reduced as it used to be. i went to northtown hyundai and they found metal shavings in the oil pan. hyundai refused to replace the engine for free even though they very well know that it is a manufacturing defect due to bad piston coating. the engine power has highly reduced and i am afraid that it might blow in the middle of the highway. i have attached the hyundai canada bulletin where they acknowledge the manufacturing problem. but, hyundai usa is not doing anything with this problem.

After 110,000 miles, engine started hesitating, not running smooth, anymore. brought to valley stream, ny dealer on 1/8 and they claimed no trouble found, sent me away and 2 mos. later, the engine died. they "confiscated" my vehicle for safety concerns, but never said what, specifically.

Intermittently engine won't turn over. it will sometimes go a week or so turning over normally, & then without warning, it won't start for 10-60 min or longer according to 1000s of drivers. last night, i was stranded for 50 min in a parking lot at night trying to get my car to turn over. dash lights up, fuel pump goes on, but there is no crank. i filmed it https://youtu.be/nbz957tb72u it's called "hyundai elantra wont start-again. dealership said they've never heard of this before..right." but there are 1000s of other complaints in that search. some forums say it's a inhibitor switch. the dealership denyies such reports on hyundai's manufacturer, although many drivers say on these forums that they had to have their elantras towed to the dealership before they were told there is no problem. helpppp me !!! it randomly turned over 50 minutes later. that cannot happen! i could be in an emergency situation. any of these drivers could be in an emergency situation. look at the comments on any youtube video after typing in elantra won't start. hundreds of people stranded from this electrical malfunction hyundai refuses to acknowledge. please read my details i typed on my video. battery is good. i had my son with me at the lynnwood one en route to his doctor appointment after it wouldn't start for 10 min in the driveway last month. everett i had an appointment so that will be on record. they didn't even look at it because it started when they turned the key and their online manufacturers site reported no problems and they refused to do a simple google search when i asked. there's no way the manufacturer hasn't heard of this. the examples are overwhelming. someone is going to get hurt, if they haven't already. major hazard to public safety. hyundai needs to take responsibility and recall this! please help me. it's like ford denying tranny problems in their'12 focuses.

I have a 2012 elantra, i am 2nd owner of the car, it just turned 67,000 miles and began making a loud ticking noise coming from the engine, i took it to my mechanic who did an oil change and discovered that there were pieces of metal in the oil pan and suggested i take it to hyundai dealership. upon inspection at dealership they stated i need a new engine. the car is no longer in warranty so they dealer sent the information into hyundai corporate, outcome is no free engine i have to pay 3,000 out of pocket to have a new engine installed. in researching the problem online i am not alone in my pain! shame on hyundai your car should be placed in the least wanted list! i wouldn't purchase another hyundai if it cost one cent! hyundai is well aware of the issues with the engines and yet fails to acknowledge the right thing to do for its customers. beware do no purchase a hyundai anything! i would not trust any of it's vehicles this is a huge safety issue for any one that owns one - do you homework check out the facts. fortunately for me i didn't encounter a major accident while driving this car. i am now the owner of a very expensive car that is worth about the cost of the engine!

Takata recall. when driving up to 40 mph my steering wheel starts making some funny noise and it shakes really bad at the same time.

" takata recall" - i got in my car, started it up and the only light that would not go off like it should when you start up the car was the "airbag" light. so i turned off the car, and figured maybe its a fluke and started my car up again and it stayed on. my light for my airbag came on for no reason. i didn't hit anything and didn't run over a pothole. i find it really odd that the light just came on out of the blue. the car didn't even have 94,000 miles on it yet. i'm always telling people how good my car is and how it has airbags for driver, passenger and side curtain airbags. someone should really check this out. before this car, i owned a subaru and even though it was a 2002, not once did my airbag light come on and stay on. the yellow light you see on the picture came off with the last recall on my car regarding the electronic engine control system. i took it into the hyundai dealership and they handled the recall, after that the light came off and has stayed off. but the airbag light stayed on.....

At 56,000 miles or there abouts my engine started to tick, has had regular maintenance and oil changes since purchased as a used vehicle in 2014 with 17,000 miles. the mechanics state this a common problem with the elantra. i am covered under my 100,000 mile warranty, yet hyundai refuses to fix the engine blaming it on poor maintenance. i brought this vehicle putting my trust in the company and now may end up paying for a car i cannot use or may kill me. someone needs to do something.

I purchased the car used, when it had 35,000 miles on it. around 38,000 miles, i started to experience an engine ticking noise and vibration before coming to a stop or when starting up after a stop. it feels like the car will stall, but it never actually stalls. i have taken the car to several mechanics and the head mechanic at a hyundai dealer. the hyundai mechanic said the issue is "common" with hyundai elantras. he listed off various fixes he has tried, but said he can't figure out a common cause. when i researched the issue online, it appears that many other hyundai elantra owners have the same problem (e.g. carcomplaints.com). it seems that there are many hyundai elantra owners waiting on engine replacements, with hyundai often not wanting to pay for the engine. i wonder if a recall is needed.

Vehicle front coil springs failed while going over a speed bump at low speed of less than 10 mph. coil springs fractured as seen in the photos attached to this writing. coil spring failure follows a similar pattern to the coil springs in the hyundai elantra 2011, which was recalled over this issue. i believe this faulty product has made its way into the hyundai elantra 2012 supply chain. here is a link to a website listing other hyundai 2012 owners having the same front coil spring issue. http://www.carproblemzoo.com/hyundai/elantra/front-suspension-coil-spring-problems.php if this failure were to occur at speed, partial loss of control would happen. it is conceivable that deadly, total loss of control could occur at speed.

Airbag light turned on for no reason.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 hyundai elantra. while driving 30 mph, there was a ticking noise coming from the engine. the contact coasted the vehicle to the side of the road. the vehicle was taken to northtown hyundai (3675 sheridan dr, amherst, ny 14226, (716) 992-6536) where it was diagnosed that the engine failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided case number: 15444915. the approximate failure mileage was 86,000. the vin was not available.

My steering is loose and the wheel clunks and rattles. sometimes it feels like the steering wheel will come right off. i can hit the slightest bump and it will rattle and shake like i ran over a huge pot hole. also, when i'm driving the car will suddenly slow down and whine like i hit the brakes even when i didn't. i was almost rear-ended when i hit the gas but the car decided it wanted to suddenly slow down a few seconds later. there is something terribly wrong here. the engine is also making a ticking/knocking noise when warming up. this happens daily.

All oil changes for this car has been done at a dealership since my stepfather bought this car. upon his death, the car had 111,000 miles when the title was transferred to me. cold weather was approaching and i wanted to get an oil change done. the dealership could not get me in for a week and even cancelled an appointment i had to i went to exhaust pro. when the temperature got to 20 below zero wind chill the engine started ticking. i took the car to dealership and had them change oil but the ticking persisted. i took the car to dealership to inquire about ticking noise and was informed there are metal shavings in oil and engine needs replaced costing $9400. this is a known problem with the 2012 and 2013 elantra but no recall has been done like the sonata. i feel that hyundai should replace the engine at no cost to me. it may not be under warranty anymore but hyundai knows there is a problem and they should be held accountable and not the consumer.

When the weather got cold the engine started making a knocking noise. took it to the mechanic and he said the block would need to be replaced and to contact hyundai since this seems to be a common problem with the 2012 elantra. fyi: the check engine light never has come on for this problem.

My vehicle was in car accident on 2/13/18, was hit while driving on the street with such a force that the car was pushed across median strip onto on coming traffic. hitting another vehicle. which the air bags did not deploy?

All i did was hit a speed bump and my airbag light came on. the car has never been in an accident. there have been a lot of problems reporting the same.

Vehicle has had engine ticking noises starting around 50,000 miles. on 3 occasions the dealer advised it was a non issue. other vehicles from the same manufacturer and with the same engine have had recalls due to an engine manufacturing process defect. engine noise has progressed from a slight ticking to a hard knocking sound and difficulty idling upon initial start up with no diagnostic codes

Sunroof exploded 5am in the morning on highway 405 traveling to redmond wa., i was not near any underpasses, or bridges. the window sound made a loud bomb noise and them i heard glass breaking. it was going to rain the rest of the day so i took black duct tape and taped the glass so that the integrity of the glass would hold and not continue to shatter and it would not destroy my head liner.

Airbag light is on continuously but is not due to clock spring issues as covered under an extended warranty. dealer diagnosed the problem as a faulty airbag control module that needs to be replaced. this vehicle has never been in any sort of accident and an airbag system that does not work is not a part of normal wear and tear. this is a serious safety issue that is explicitly hyundai's responsibility.

While driving my hyundai elantra it makes a hard shift at times slightly a bit hesitant which could cause the car to be rear ended .been to 2 mechanics already one being the dealer they say nothing is wrong with the car

Takata recall car doesn't want to start and struggles to do so. have replaced battery and key fob batteries. this has to be a starter issue, possibly an electrical short. says "key out" while i'm driving it half the time. i am afraid it will cut off while i'm driving it! i have only had the car for 2 years! been doing this for about 2 months.

Well i bought the car used and later found out it had a recall on it.... sometimes when i press the breaks it seem like it flooding and be pulling to the right and making noises underneath near tires.. it also have a sensor lights on.

Hyundai motor america (hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 elantra vehicles manufactured october 29, 2010, to october 25, 2011. due to an electronic stability control (esc) sensor malfunction, the brakes for one or more wheels may be applied unexpectedly and the engine power may be reduced. these symptoms will be accompanied by illumination of the esc indicator lamp in the instrument cluster.

Vehicle stalled twice while driving. once while merging from a highway on to a surface street. hyundai is aware of this issue involving 2012 elantras and other years as well. this issue was also present in the sonata, and ultimately was settled with a class action law suit. speaking with an attorney we are also aware of instances where vehicles have caught on fire as a result of these defective engines.

Driving down road engine died towed to dealer told needed new engine had one at 44,000 done under warranty. this engine lasted to 76,000 now needs another engine. engine is so backordered dealership telling me 6 months. so many elantra engines blowing up should be a recall !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After pulling into my parking space, i went to put the car in park and it lunged forward several feet onto the pavement and up 2 steps in front of my house...the vehicle was stationary, at the curb

There is an active recall campaign on the clockspring for this vehicle. the airbag light will turn on and off while turning the steering wheel while driving. hyundai charged for a diagnosis which revealed a "b1346 driver airbag resistance too high (1st stage)" code, but they would not replace the clockspring under warranty. on hyundai's own website they describe the reason for the additional warranty as: "the clock spring is an electrical connection which rotates with the steering wheel to maintain proper functioning of the airbag unit. hyundai’s system is designed to illuminate the airbag warning light when electrical resistance increases, which can be contributed to by usage patterns and environmental conditions." and in regards to warranty extension: "hyundai is extending the warranty coverage for the driver’s front airbag clock spring assembly to 15 years, unlimited mileage, from the date of original retail delivery or date of first use. this coverage is automatic; there is no action needed on your behalf." i would like hyundai of america to replace the part as promised, as i can't afford to do more diagnostic procedures, and i feel very unsafe driving the vehicle.

Tapping from engine. have asked dealer to inspect and they said there is no issue for the last four oil changes and inspections. with the recall of other hyundai, i'm thinking this maybe the same issue.

Engine light came on. took to auto zone & vide 0713 & p0711. i also took my vehicle to aamco which verify the sensor in the vehicle needs to be replaced however they have to take the transmission apart to fix. i only have 31,000 on my vehicle. has there been a recall already or do you expect this should be covered under 1000,000 even though i am 2nd owner. they did give me a card for roadside assistance

I’ve been feeling the car pulling forward for a while now. it’s gotten to the point where i can only press on the pedal a little so it’s doesnt speed up to fast. when the car is going up hill it starts accelerating on its own and when you let go of the breaks you can feel it accelerating without giving it any gas.

Airbag warning light came on as i was driving. it would come on and off at first, but now it stays on the whole time the car is on. car shakes excessively, especially when idle.

The steering in my 2012 elantra sticks while driving on straight on straight roads at speeds over 40-50 mph. this vehicle is equipped with electronic power steering and it feels like a magnet breaking free from a metal surface when trying to navigate. a resistance is always present at higher speeds. constant correction is mandatory or i feel the steering wheel won't break free. this is a very dangerous situation. hyundai advised replacing the motor driven power steering column at my cost of $1300 parts and labor. i have had the steering coupler replaced for $100. this is not the fix for this problem. the clockspring issue is also not a fix. i've seen many complaints of this issue on the forums. this is present on several model years with low and high mileage vehicles.

Periodically (including today) my elantra will not start. all electronics turn on and the battery, engine, oil indicators appear on the dash. as many others have mentioned i wait 5-10 minutes and try my car again it will work just fine. had a few diagnostics where the dealer suspected battery or oil change but i've had several batteries since oem and keep up to date on synthetic oil. searched online and found many other complaints regarding range shift being the culprit. either way i'll be taking it to be inspected before it gets any worse/will not start at all.

While in motion, car jolts as traction control light blinks as well as the engine malfunction light. engine then shuts off. this has happened multiple times over a 2 month period, at a variety of speeds and on both highway and city streets.

This is a pushbutton start vehicle. intermittently, when the button is pushed, the car won't start. this occurs with a fully charged battery, foot depressed on the brake pedal, etc. this is apparently a very common problem, although my local dealer professed to never have heard of it. consensus online is that it is a faulty "range switch", resulting in a failure of the vehicle to sense that it is in park. dealers claim that they "can't replicate the problem", and so can't fix it.

Inhibitor or range switch when attempting to start the car it only makes a single click and the display does not always show that the car is in park. sometimes shifting into neutral allows for a start. sometimes wiggling gear shift while in park allows for a start. sometimes it just doesn't want to start. mechanic won't replace any part if they can't replicate the problem. i've seen a lot of complaints about this issue for this vehicle (2012) as well as the 2011 and 2013 models. this can seriously cause people to become stranded!!!

I pulled into a parking spot, the car accelerated by itself jumping the curb running about 15 feet and hitting a rock before i could stop it.

Steering is loose - hard to handle

It is unacceptable for a vehicle to not cover safety concerns as it is clearly an issue with hyundai's manufacturing.

Attempted to switch lanes on the highway at 55mph. switched lanes successfully, but could not straight the steering back straight, causing crash into concrete barrier! airbags did not deploy upon impact. airbags deployed after bouncing back off of the concrete barrier.

The front coil spring fractured while i was driving on a city street and came into contact with my tire. the coil started to rub against my tire until it was punctured. i think this may relate to the recall for the 2011 elantra (15v629000).

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 hyundai elantra. while driving at unknown speeds, the vehicle jerked and the air bag indicator illuminated. also, the brake lights failed to work. the vehicle was taken to a local dealer (henderson hyundai, 46 n boulder hwy, henderson, nc 89015) where it was diagnosed that the fuel injector was clogged and the vehicle had an oil leak. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 60,000.

Automatic transmission does not shift properly and check engine light illuminates on and off the speed sensors in transmissions may have failed

Clicking noise when accelerating/ starting car

Front axles are loud while driving. changed to a softer compound tire and made a difference. however, the road noise has become louder at 77,986. took vehicle to service and they found nothing wrong. this has been going on around 20,000 miles.

"takata recall" poor engine performance. rough idle at cold start. smell gas as well. randomly blows huge amounts of smoke out the tail pipe while accelerating. "example" merging on interstate. this has been going on since the vehicle reached 50,000 miles. all maintenance work has been done. now at 77,986 runs like a grass cutter. just runs rough.

"takata recall" turn ignition key to start position and click, click, motor does not start. turn key off back on to start position and engine starts. this happens randomly.

My 2012 hyundai elantra began having acceleration problems for the past 6 to 9 months. as i step on the gas at approximately 30 to 40 mph the automobile kicks, bucks and does not accelerate as intended. my hyundai dealer replaced the fuel pump/assembly ($700) and it seemed to get worse.failure to accelerate as expected is a danger if you are trying to enter a busy highway or trying to get out of the way of another speeding vehicle. this seems to occur at speeds up to 65 mph when stepping on the gas. this happens on a regular basis but not every day.

Takata recall. airbag light is on. looked online and a lot of other people are having this issue.

When attempting to start my vehicle it would not start. all lights came on, but the engine would not turn over. after turning the car off and sitting for 10 minutes it finally started. two days later my vehicle did the same exact thing. i took my car to the shop and they found nothing wrong with it. while at the car shop another elantra owner (2011 model year) was there with the same issue. i am unsure exactly what the problem can be but i did look online and many owners for the hyundai elantra model years 2011-2013 complained of the same issue.

I have an issue with a 2012 hyundai elantra. it currently has 84,585 miles and i purchased it used from a dealership at 48,484 miles. it was inspected by a hyundai service department in august of this year after making a knocking noise and stalling continually. it was diagnosed by the hyundai service department with the same exact issue the sonata has which is covered in the class action suit, but our dealers request for a new short block was denied by hyundai. there are metal shavings in the oil valve, and also in the oil pan caused by shearing from the crankshaft. there appear to be others with the same crankshaft issue that own elantra models as well. please see above attachments. my concern is that the same faulty deburring process that was used on the sonata’s crank shaft may have also been used on certain elantra’s during the same timeframe. i also have receipts of all of my oil changes. if there is any information that is public knowledge about this deburring process that might have been used on other engine models or if you have any suggestions on how to proceed, i would appreciate it.

When drving the 2012 elantra over a pot hole, a man hole or any other uneven surface or imperfection on the road the elantra sways in an extremely unsafe manner, if you do not have a firm grip in the steering wheel you can definately loose control and have or cause a serious accident. hyundai should do something about this issue and correct the problem, there are so many owners complining about this problem.

My elantra limited 2012 unlock my doors or start the car unless i put the key up to the start button. i don't havean ignition my car only starts with a push button,both key fabs won't work, i've researched and alot if customer have the same complaint this happens multiple times someone mentioned the had range shaft or something replace and it works but many people are complaining about the same problem

Airbag light came on about a week ago for about 10 minutes while at a drive-thru window and went off. driving down a 45 mph road the light came back on and went off just as quickly. called the dealer the next day and made an appointment. light continued to go on and off while driving around town and even came on when i put the car in park. took it to dealer and they couldn't "duplicate" the problem so they have no idea what is causing the light to go on and off. has been doing it everyday since i left the dealer. i am waiting on a loaner from them so they can keep the car for longer than a couple of hours. have to say i don't feel real safe driving my car with the airbag light going on and off while i am driving.

Intermittently, my car does not start. i turn the key and nothing happens. i try it again. nothing. i try it again and it starts. it happened when the car was sitting overnight in my garage. it happened after i was in a store for about 45 minutes. it happened after i was in another location for 2 hours. i brought it to the dealer about a year ago when it happened and they said nothing was wrong because it didn't do it for them. (of course, it didn't!) then, after another couple of times of it happening again, i researched and found it was probably some kind of switch. i told that to the dealer and they replaced something which seemed to fix the problem. now, all of a sudden, it's happening again. i am afraid to drive this car for fear i will be stranded somewhere unsafe one day.

I purchased this car new from a hyundai dealer in march 2012 problem 1. since early on, the car always exhibited a serious instability in the rear end. specifically speaking, when driving on any small bump found on any normal road, the car rear suspension will not absorbe the bump like any normal car would but instead severely jumps and then 'darts or shifts' laterally. even in dry pavement. having lived in the ne and illinois now, i am a very experienced driving in snowy conditions. driving this car in even 1/2" of snow is downright terrifying. there is absolutely no rear end control and total instability no matter how careful you drive. i have found myself not knowing if i was going to make home without getting into an accident. the past two winters i had to use other vehicle even if the weather forecast call for snown flurries. i have never driven a car so unstable in my 45 years of driving. by the way, loading up the car with passengers or additional weight has zero impact reducing the severity of the problem. problem 2 the rear tires wear out very fast. even though i rotate them even 5k miles, they wear so badly that they produce a loud road noise from uneven wear. i am on my third set of tires and these need replacement now. i have taken the car to to hyundai, they checked alignment and said there is nothing wrong and the problem must be the tires. after doing some research, i learned these cars have a solid , non-adjustable rear end with a fixed toe-in and camber. i am certain that both problems i listed are caused by hyundai's rear end design. this is a major problem and hyundai refuses to acknowledge it. it is a matter of time before accidents with loss of life will occur. what am i suppose to do this coming winter? .a neighbor with a 2013 elantra complained about the same instability.

Problem : esc light flashes while driving, some time makes rumbling noise , power loss, feel like car in neutral, steering felt lock, sudden break and creates unsafe condition. not all symptoms come up same time but one of them while light flashing. details : 1. first time happened in june/july 2015 contacted dealer. since dealer cannot replicate they did test drive and felt everything normal. i drove 1 year scarred but issue didn't occurred 2. few weeks ago this problem resurfaced dealer repeated same story but wanted to drive with me which is pending. while normal driving it happened and this time it was recorded on my cellphone to show as proof because in test drive it may or may not happen. i feel company and dealer not working closely and someone can cause serious issue of safety. i request to look into this reaching out to company and address this issue. i cannot upload video let me know if you need. just loading a picture.

Dashboard airbag light comes on and off intermittently while driving. the light stays on for a few minutes, turns off for a few minutes, and appears to happen at random.

The driver's side coil broke and punctured the tire causing a blow out while driving 70 mph in the middle lane of a highway. terrified because the the smoke and the inability to steer the car i was barely able to get across the right hand lane and park on the side of the road. the car was towed to the dealership where i had purchased my 2012 hyundai elantra. i am the original owner, and have always serviced my car at the dealership. the coil spring broke on may 27th and the dealership is having difficulty locating a replacement for the coil spring. i am told that they could possibly have one by june 8th. this fact alone tells me that my car is not the only one with this issue. i am insisting that they replace the passenger side as well because i am certain that it is just a matter of time before that coil also breaks. the dealership said that hyundai will not cover the cost of replacing the second coil spring as there is nothing wrong with it. i have contacted hyundai and started a good faith request and they are reviewing to see if they will cover the cost of replacing the passenger side. hyundai had a coil spring recall on 2012 elantra vehicles for all cars produced prior to 3/31/2011. my car was produced on 6/9/2011 just missing the recall cut off date. obviously given what happened to my car they need to extend that cut off date. i am very lucky that my blow out did not cause an accident. my dealership has been very good during this ordeal and has provided me with a loaner car.

Have a ticking sound in engine. took to dealership was going to charge me $62.00 to look at it. took around 45 mins. service person came and told me it sounded like a piston slap . with further look at the engine they said i need a new engine. say what! will i looked on line and youtube about this problem. went to a web sight about complaints found a lot of them about ticking . called and asked if it was a short, long or creat engine. to me the short block need replaced. called next day and told me that engine was on hold. hyundai wanted them to take pictures and send them to corporate office. dealership said they would call me when they find out what hyundai wants to do. have read online line that hyundai knows about the bad engines and do not want to replace them. you get nothing but hassle from them about replacing the engine. dealership stated that it's not there fault. but i feel that they are also. they sold me a car with a bad engine. i could have had a frozen engine while driving on the express way and got into a bad accident. going to call again on friday to see if anything has been done. took it in on monday. dealership to me not to call them again. that they will call me. all i want is the engine replaced so i have a car.

My vehicle was affected by nhtsa campaign number: 15v871000. the local hyundai dealer performed campaign # 133 on 04/14/16, at which time a y yaw rate sensor rep/hecu upd was (corrected). on that date, the odometer reading was: 53,768. prior to having this re-calibration i had experienced no noticeable issues regarding the braking system. after the recall was performed by the dealer, on six (x6) separate occasions, one of the bakes has independently locked up upon transitioning from smooth to rough surfaces, going over a manhole and/or dissimilar road materials (such as blacktop to cement bridge, or onto a serrated metal bridge material). this has been completely random in occurrence, on the highway or typical city street, but does seem to be related to braking or slowing down in general as that is when it is noticed, except that one wheel brake locks - causing the us (the drivers) to take evasive action as the car suddenly will veer to one direction or another unexpectedly instead of the intended slow-down. rather than rectify the problem the recall was meant to resolve (that we had not even seen symptoms of), now the "supposed repair - hyundai campaign 137," seems to have actually reproduced the symptoms in our vehicle, now making us feel unsafe and uneasy driving it as we have nearly avoided collisions on a few occasions due to the new brake lock-up that has started since recall work was performed on 04/14/16, which was meant to correct this issue, not create it.

Nhtsa campaign number: 15v871000 - same situation 2012 hyundai elantra - engine breaks automatically while on the interstate. car seems to break (slow down) in bursts while trying to accelerate even on roads with speeds under 40mph. has been a intermittent issue since january. dealer agrees it is an ebs/ yaw system problem but will not fix it with the recall of nhtsa campaign number: 15v871000, even though we have a 2012 hyundai elantra. the problem may be bigger than the original scope.

Our vehicle is just outside of the production window that applies to hyundai recall 133 regarding fractured coil springs. our right front coil spring broke, resulting in the puncturing of the tire. both us and the previous owner of the vehicle live and have used the vehicle in the defined snow/salt region. the vehicle impacted a pothole. immediate inspection showed no damage to tire or wheel. driver continued on to work, parked, and at the end of the workday began to drive home. after turning a corner, an audible "grinding" was noted, and driver stopped, looking under the vehicle for lodged debris. second motorist stopped to assist, and an attempt to move the vehicle was made, at which point it was noted that the suspension was "off", and they believed a portion of the braking system was resting on the tire. driver proceeded to attempt to remove the vehicle from the roadway, and the turning of the vehicle resulted in the fractured coil spring coming in contact with the right front tire, lacerating it. recall 133 covers models manufactured through march 31, 2011. our manufacture date is june 20, 2011.

Due to the design of the 2012 elantra suspension/rear end, the rear wheel tires are worn out well before expectation. purchased the car new and after 20k miles discovered significant wear on the rear tires...especially the inside of the tire. thought it was a tire problem. replaced all tires, and after only 16k miles the rear tires again need replacement. front tires look like new. the tires are less than 2 years old. again, still thought it was a tire problem. went to tire dealer and was told the problem was not the tires but the fact that the rear suspension cannot be adjusted for alignment. it is fixed by hyundai at a -1.50 camber...which apparently causes the tires to ware out quickly. i now agree that it a car problem and contacted hyundai customer service. the rep said they had never heard of this before (which i find difficult to believe) and refused any assistance pushing it back on the tire manufacturer. the local hyundai dealer stated they were aware of this problem, but could nothing to resolve it. this appears to be a design flaw which hyundai is not ready or willing to address.

Both original coil springs of this vehicle have snapped due to corrosion and cold weather climate within a year of the other. hyundai will not include in the recall because it is 2012 vehicle. the issue is the same as the 2011 coil spring failures. this recall needs extended to the 2012 vehicles as well.

Over the last several years my elantra has stalled immediately upon starting. it doesnt matter if the engine is hot or cold. just filled up with gas or anywhere in between. the problem is very intermittent. usually it would then start on the 2nd or 3rd try but has on several occasions left me stranded requiring a tow. the dealership acknowledged this was a known problem but unless they can replicate the problem, there is nothing they can do. ive had the throttle body cleaned and all new spark plugs, but its still acting up. i dont want to keep throwing money at it guessing what could be wrong. this began around 10,000 miles and it now is approaching 80,000. id like for hyundai to acknowledge there are hundreds of similar complaints and to investigate the problem.

Re: nhtsa 15v871000 based on the hyundai safety recall, i went to two dealerships and still have a glowing esc dash light and an unresolved safety problem. each did a free "calibration" of a "steering" sensor and told me a "yaw" sensor would have to be replaced at my expense for over $1200. the nhtsa remedy said "dealers will verify the proper operation of the esc sensors .... free of charge". please note "sensors" is plural. surely it was not the nhtsa's intention to have hyundai operate a "bait and switch" by doing a free "calibration" on one sensor and charging over $1200 to replace the other. my family and i are now driving a car with a safety issue that is known to the nhtsa and hyundai but is apparently not covered by a safety recall - based on hyundai's interpretation of the existing recall! your help is needed - thank you. *tr

The esc system did not help prevent and may have even caused my car accident. there has also been a recall on my yaw-rate sensor, which is the key component to the esc system...updated 05-19-16 *bf on march 2, 2016, hyundai national customer care refused the consumers request to have the vehicle tested in its post accident condition. on march 26, 2016, southern states hyundai of raleigh replaced the yaw-rate sensor and acknowledged the part was defective. hyundai sent a letter to the consumer, stating they did not believe the yaw-rate sensor contributed to the accident. updated 06/13/16.*jb *tr

Sunroof shattering: while traveling on the highway in virginia on 3/25/16 i heard a crack, pop, and then shattering. pieces of glass could be heard sliding over the top of the car and seen in the back window. no item was seen inside of the car to suggest an outside object breaking the glass. i dropped off the car at the hyundai service department in white flint.

Our 2012 elantra began making knocking sounds during cold starts. the noise was fainter when the engine was warm but never disappeared completely. the sound became louder when the weather was colder. when i originally took the car to the dealer, i told them that i thought the problem may have been the timing belt but was informed that the 2012 had a timing chain and not a belt. when the noise became too loud, i finally took it back to the dealer for a diagnostic check of the engine and was told that it was a defective connecting rod bearing and a new engine was necessary. i am aware that the 2011-2013 sonata was recalled in 2015 for the same problem but thought that the elantra was exempt.

Takata inflators first day i got the car, i was driving slow due to poor conditions (snow) when i tried to stop brakes made a grinding noise car pulled off to one side. i came dangerously close to smashing into a snow bank. i assumed this happened because of the road conditions. this has happened repeatedly and unexpectedly, every once in awhile i apply the breaks, hear the grinding noise aand lose control of the car. im very lucky and surprised i havent gotten into an accident because of this. its extremely scary and i absolutely hate driving the car in fear of this happening and causing a crash.

Airbag light came on dealer reports it is a faulty clock spring. i see this has been an issue in the past with other hyundai years and the dealer states it is a problem they frequently see.

My 2012 elantra ltd edition has a keyless entry and push button to start. recently i am having problem to open the doors or start the cars. sometimes it starts the engine and sometimes it does not. i am surprised this problem is lot more common in the forum and it has not been taken care by hyundai or nhtsa. i am missing my work. this is my second hyundai and this is it. no more hyundai for me. i paid big bucks for it and no one cares. i have left the message to the dealership in the morning and they have not called me. i had owned many cars before and never had a problem like this.

While driving on a major highway in normal non slick road conditions, my vehicles esc light began to blink. unexpectedly, and without my foot depressing the brakes, my vehicle decelerated from 55mph to 20mph. the front left tire ceased to rotate and torque was lost to the engine. the car was turned off and back on again and i immediately turned off the esc system and drove home. that evening i received the notice recall for exactly the issue i had encountered. i brought my vehicle two days later to sansone hyundai where they agreed after reading the car's computer that the esc issue had indeed occurred. the technician then explained to me that they "reset the computer and this probably shouldn't happen again". he went on to explain there is no current solution, and i have to be patient. i appreciate the fact a solution has not yet been found but, i am now fearful to drive this vehicle. i was unbelievable lucky that there were no driver's behind me and that i was near the shoulder when the system failed. if those lucky conditions had not been present i could have been involved in a potentially serious accident. i feel i should have been provided with a loaner vehicle in the meantime. i purchased my hyundai because i felt they were safe, reliable cars with great customer service. my car actually experienced the issue that is described in the recall which itself states that, "inappropriate brake application to one or more wheels and/or reduced engine torque can increase the risk of a crash". knowing this, hyundai has sent me on way in a vehicle which can "increase the risk of a crash". i now have to wait and be genuinely scared of the vehicle which i rely on. i have patience to wait for a solution, but i need a solution from hyundai now. not when someone is able to update the software in the vehicle.

Brake lights started to fail first right side rear then all failed including the third light.

My car accelerate on its own without me pressing on the gas randomly. some days it drives normally and other days i can feel the car accelerating on its own. it was so bad 2 days ago that when i got off the highway it was trying to accelerate into the car in front of me at a red light. i had by foot on the brake and the car was revving to 5000 rpms. i took it to hyundai who could not find a problem but charged me $250 to clean the throttle body.

The steering sticks when driving relatively straight, all speeds, and applying small corrective movement. the dealers claim that this is caused as the electric steering assist "idles" when the sensors say the car is going straight, however, we all know small corrections are required on straight roads. very scary when you have to momentarily fight your steering to correct for a pothole or uneven pavement.

The vehicle has accelerated on it's own twice now -- today and about a month ago. both occurrences were exactly the same. they were while parking in my office's parking lot after driving 20-30 minutes on the highway. as soon as i took my foot off the brake it was if i was pressing down on the gas pedal but i was not. when i stopped and put the car in park the rpm shot all the way up and engine was revving as if i had my foot all the way down on the gas pedal. this did not stop until i shut the engine off. i then restart the car and it is not happening. then, with the car still in park, i gently tap on the gas and it starts again. the gas pedal does not appear to be physically stuck. about an hour later i start the car and try tapping on the gas and cannot reproduce the problem. i see these complaints all over the internet. hyundai needs to own up and issue a recall before somebody gets hurt, this is very dangerous and scary.

2012 hyundai elantra randomly will not start. we replaced the neutral safety switch and about two weeks later it did it again. does not seem to be affected by weather. it has been towed to the dealer twice, but since it starts when it is there, they say they can't replicate the problem and therefore can't fix the problem. i would say in the year and a half that i have had the car it has stranded me 4 times and not on the first turn over another 15. i usually turn the key to the off position and try again. after a couple tries it usually starts.

My car has been having issues with starting. the problem isn't all the time. i'm not sure what the trigger is, but one or twice a week, it won't start. i thought it was the battery, but it's not. i changed it and still giving me issues. i read online and found that it might be the range switch because people that has this issue had their range switch replaced and no more issue. before they replaced the range switch, they recommended to put in "n" position before start, which i did and it worked for a while. now, i have to put the e-brakes on before it cranks. the last couple of weeks, i have issues with locking my car. neither the electronic push button on the door nor remote works. i had to manual lock it with the key. but this issue isn't all the time either. it only happened 6 times so far.

Car won't start. at first, we thought it's the battery so we got our battery jump starter. but it wasn't the case. lights and electrical works but the car starter won't turn over. towed it to the dealer. the following day, went to dealer to check it and the car started without any problem. dealer's mechanics still hasn't seen it yet that day. there might be some loose wiring or inhibitor switch problem.

I am terrified to drive my car on compacted snow or ice. the backend fishtails so bad i fear losing control. i have to slow down to 30 mph to control the car. i will not drive on any big highways because i can't go over 30 mph. like other complaints i have lived in mn all my life and had many cars. i have never experienced what i am with this car. they back end has a mind of it's own. if you go to carcomplaints.com you will see what others are experiencing. there are lots of complaints on this issue. look up the 2013's to understand what is going on. i love my car but now feel i have to get rid of it. in good conscience i can't sell this to a private party. i don't want to be responsible for their death. only choice is thru a dealer and lose money. i suppose a hyundai dealer is my only option because some of them are aware of this problem. one admitted it was a design flaw. let the dealer ship car to a southern state where there is no snow and ice. please help. make hyundai fix this problem before someone gets killed. i am disappointed with consumer report who recommended this car. they must not have tested it on winter roads. thank you *tr

Intermittent start failures. car fails to start several times a week. had the battery tested and it checked ok. seems to be related to the automatic transmission shifter. the shifter seems to think the car is not in park, but is is. switching it back and forth out of park sometimes works, but not always. very frustrating. unreliable. took it to the dealer and they "corrected a grounding anomaly". failed to start again the next day. online reports have been very helpful in seeing how widespread this problem is. if hyundai doesn't recall this problem, their rising reputation will be dashed. i wish i had not bought this car.

When driving over a speed bump at the mall i heard a noise from the front of the car. looked at front of car ,did not see anything wrong,proceeded to drive it and heard the noise again and the smell of burning rubber and smoke coming from drivers side front wheel compartment. called tow truck and the mechanic said the front spring was broke.this happened on 11-21-15. had it towed to a repair shop.

Windshield washer fluid pump needs to be replaced. per mechanic, this part is not available "after market" and is only available from hyundai. for this reason, the mechanic believes that this is a common problem which is why the part is only available from hyundai.

I am literally scared to death to drive this car again in the winter. on monday, november 30, 2015, we received our first storm of the season. i was driving on almost entirely clear roads until i went over an overpass that must have had a thin layer of ice on it. my car began fishtailing so bad that i had to use both lanes to recover. thank god no one was in the lane next to me, or one or both would be severely injured. i immediately slowed down to 40 miles an hour and continued to fishtail over every single overpass until the roads actually had some precipitation on them, at which time i couldn't go over 40 mph without the car swaying to the point of no recovery. i have grown up in wi and mn, and i have driven on snowy/icy roads my entire life. i have had small non-4-wheel-drive vehicles (honda civic hatchbacks) and i have never, ever experienced anything like this. cars were passing me going close to the speed limit. i was the only one who had to slow down that much in order to remain in control of the vehicle. prior to this incident in our first snowfall (i just bought the car in july of 2015), i have experienced the rear end "swaying" every time you go over a bump or try to change lanes. it feels like it's just about to swerve but then it recovers, but i didn't ever think it would get this bad. i have no idea what i'm going to do this winter. i do not feel safe in this vehicle. i even added two sandbags to the trunk to try to add some weight, to no avail. this issue has to be addressed before somebody is injured severely or worse. i cannot tell you how close i was to rolling this vehicle on monday. this vehicle is simply not safe to drive in areas that have the slightest amount of snow or freezing conditions. hyundai has to be made aware of this issue. this has happened on roads at speeds anywhere from 25 - 65 mph. highways or city streets.

We had our oil change done, my husband drove out highway at nite going straight and all of sudden car started drive odd.saw oil light on pulled over,towed to dealership.they in turn said engine was bad,had to sell us another car. has that happened to others?

When driving over a speed bump in a mall.,i heard a noise from the front of car.looked at front of car did not see anything wrong and proceeded to drive it. it made a funny noise and you could smell burning rubber and smoke started to come from front drivers side wheel compartment.called a tow truck and the mechanic said looks like the front coil spring broke. i was wandering if you have had any complaints on this year as i know the 2011 had a fracturing problem with the front coil springs.this just happened today 11-21-15 and is at a repair facility to be looked at on monday when they open for business.

I parked my car at home and shut it off. i immediately attempted to restart it in order to adjust the car's position, and found that the interior lights would come on, but not the engine. 3 dash lights--engine, battery, and i don't remember the third one--remained lit. took it in to the dealership the following monday (10/19), and they replaced the starter.

It was beautiful, dry sunny day when driving down a city street in a construction zone(half paved road half dirt road), all of a sudden the airbag light illuminated on the dash. it stayed on until 5 days later, the light flickered three times and stayed illuminated. a few time sitting still, car in the park position, car running the airbag light would be off but as soon as you put it into gear the airbag light on the dash would illuminate. ten days later the light went off for 30 minutes(driving a city street in the rain with wind shield wipers were on) but then it came back on. when the mechanic ran a diagnostic check on it, no error message came up. he tried to reset the airbags but was unsuccessful. the light is still on. it is very unsettling not knowing if there is really a problem with the airbags or if it is a malfunction of the airbag system in some way.

My car was sitting at my apartment. went to go to the store and the car wouldn't start. the car would not turn over no matter many times i would try and start it. i had to call my dad who told me to hold gas pedal down and start the car. this happened twice. took it to the dealership, said they couldn't do anything about it because it wasn't happening at that moment. car starts to jerk while driving. started off only in the mornings, then while i was driving home from work, it jerked again this time more aggressive. have talked with hyundai 3 times about this issue, said they couldn't do anything about it until they see it happening themselves. i am having to press the gas hard to go at least 50 mph. yesterday 10/19/2015. i stop to get gas. full my tank up, get in the car and the won't start again! press my foot on the gas, car won't start. had to call triple a and they say my battery is low. bought the car in 2013, shouldn't be happening. something is wrong with this vehicle and all i get is they have to see it happening. i have taken this car to the same hyundai dealership in south austin. i bought the car from carmax. i have no idea what else to do.

Car would not start at all from overnight rest in our driveway. called the hyundai assurance line, they sent a tow truck for a battery jump, tow truck driver started the car without a jump by repeatedly pressing the gas pedal as he turned the key. he said it looked like the car was not getting enough gas and that he'd seen this many times before on runs for elantras. research suggests this is the 2nd leading cause of complaints for this model / year. thank you. *tr

Highly frustrating and potentially life threatening situation hyundai has put me in. on september 11th my vehicle caught on fire in the rear by the exhaust pipe. prior to this my vehicle had been at rick case hyundai 3 times with me complaining the transmission was not working properly the 1st time i was told there are no codes so we have to wait till it breaks, the 2nd time i was told no codes sorry, and the third time they actually replaced a broken part that controls the shift times in the transmission. could show them my problem. i asked hyundai corporate to do an investigation into the transmission and the fire and help me resolve this issue. they went through their 6 week process and then denied my claim saying it wasn't found to be a malfunction of any parts that caused the fire. i have video of where the fire started, the transmission not working, and countless pictures that show the fire obviously started at the tailpipe due to an increase in temperature because of the transmission failure. when i ask hyundai for the information that lead to their conclusion they say it's confidential and proprietary and will not let me see it. when i tell them the transmission is still not working and everytime i drive it there is a burning smell and i'm scared for my safety and life driving this car they just say hyundais decision is final and they won't honor my warranty on the car. they claim it's perfectly safe to drive and operating as intended and designed. i feel they are covering somethings up or never actually investigated this incident which is why they won't release information. during the fire malfunctions in the head shield and taillight wiring were discovered making for 4 possible life threatening defects my car was parked at work in my parking space when the smoke and fire started.

Right front axle bolts became very loose at 39,000 and the axle could have separated from the transmission and or wheel potentially cause the driver to loose control and being involved in a serious or fatal accident. hyundai should either use effective lock washers or lock tight on the bolts to prevent them from backing out of the axle where it connects to the transmission and or wheel. a recall should be ordered. if you google this problem there is a video on the web where another elantra has the very same problem. i became aware of the problem because my elantra started making a very not8iceable popping sound when you put the transmission in reverse or drive. the bolts became progressively loose to the point that while driving at highway speeds when i would take my foot off the accelerator the axle would pop due to looseness and when i placed may foot back on the accelerator it would pop. this is a very serious safety flaw. when i look the car to the dealer they charged me $63.65 to re-torque the axle bolts that should never have become loose.

Failure to start; car does not recognize that the car is in park and it prevents the car from starting, even though it is in park. car cannot be taken out of park or put back in sometimes after it is started and idling. happens intermittently, very frustrating. have bypassed the situation by taking the samll clip from the center console off, then depressing transmission engager and moving the gear shift into reverse and then back into park. the vehicle will then start. after all the complaints i have seen for this very same situation, i cannot believe there has not been a recall hyundai?

Does not start all the time.the panel lights come on when you turn the ignition on but it will not start all the time.after 5to 20 minutes and moving the gear shifter it may start.

Since we have purchased this vehicle, it continually pulls and drifts to the left. we have to fight to keep it on the road at all times. so far the sway bar (link) has been replaced in the front and new tires put on. all this has been absolutely to no avail. there are several videos on youtube that show this exact problem people have been experiencing with this same make, model, and year hyundai!! apparently this is a common problem and it is very dangerous when trying to steer the vehicle and the wind is blowing across the interstate. also, when we had the vehicle looked at with one of our own mechanics, and not the dealership's mechanics, he put it up on the lift and could hardly turn the wheels. he commented that the steering was as tight as if the vehicle was a truck!! there is something very wrong with the steering that could easily lead to an accident.

The vehicle will not turn on when pushing the push start. this keeps happening this is not safe. this needs to be recalled, my safety could be in jeopardy.

Windshield washer stopped working. reported to dealership, they said they don't have time to fix it.

While the vehincle being in park and trying to start the vehicle it did not start. it does some clicking and after turning on and off the key the vehicle starts. it has aggravated more over the course of these past two weeks and its doing it almost every other time i try to start the engine. the dealer has checked the battery and also taken it to autozone and confirmed the battery is ok but the vechile still does not start. i have an appointment for this coming 9/21/15 for the dealer to take a look at it but reviewing all of the electrical complaints it seems that there is a common trend of affected vehicles with the same issue. have not seen the experience of the vehilce stalling on me during the highway but because of the daily traffic i take to commute home-work i just hope i dont get into a situation where my safety gets compromised. do not know how many complaints need to occurr before hyundai does something to solve the issue and really prevent a major safety one.

I turn the key and the dashboard lights turn on. the radio turns on also. the problem is the engine doesn't start. there is no noise where you should hear the starter. just silence.

On multiple occasions, when starting my elantra, the engine won't turn over. the car made a "click" sound, but did not start. after a few minutes it would turn over. i had the battery checked and it was fully charged. this happened about 7 times since feb. 2014. this last time, sept. 3, 2015 it would not start at all. i had it towed to my car repair. again, the battery was fully charged. they called to tell me the next day it started up right away, and many times during the 6 hours the garage had the car. the garage was unable to replicate the issue. called the dealership and they said they have not have any complaints about this issue. researched the issue on line and there are some complaints about this issue. the posts are pointing to a bad rain sensor or a transmission range switch.

Engine refuses to start all electrical are ok, dealer said that the transmission must be jiggled and they decided to replace a micro-switch.

Failure to start. car does not recognize that the car is in park and the inhibitor switch prevents the car from starting, even though it is in park. car can not be taken out of park or put back in. could present a potential safety hazard because someone could get stranded somewhere with no way to start car. i have seen numerous complaints about this issue online and actual youtube videos about the problem. i have real concerns about my daughter driving this relatively new car and then getting stranded somewhere

The airbag indicator light on the panel has come on for no apparent reason indicating there may be an issue with the airbags becoming disconnected???

Yesterday, august 17, 2015, i parked at my apt complex to get my mail, turned car off completely, i was literally out of my car for 40 seconds. i got back in started it up, and nothing. it would not even turn over, no sounds, no clicks, just dead silence. all of the panel lights were lit, however, and the air vents were blowing air from the fan, the radio turned on, but not the engine. the battery was newly installed on october 2, 2015 when i purchased the vehicle as a certified pre-owned. i used my hyundai roadside assistance, someone arrived in a normal vehicle to jump start my car. first try, it started up just fine. he was trying to sell me a new battery for $150, indicating that because i live in arizona now, the heat does strange things to cars. i didn't take the offer. i let the car run while i was parked for about 20 minutes, then drove to the carport where i park my car normally in my apt complex. i shut the engine off, and hesitantly tried to start it again, and to no avail. nothing again. it wouldn't start. after searching online, i found a few sites where others had the same issue. one person mentioned to turn the ignition to acc and throw the shifter into neutral, which i did, and then magically my car started up perfectly fine. i tried turning it off and on again about 5 more times, and it did just fine, no stalling. since i've had this vehicle there have been many times (at least 20+) that it won't start up on the first try, but seconds later i'll retry the ignition, and it'll start up, but it sounds as if it's going to conk out. like it's barely hanging on. i've had no other issues with my car besides this. after reading on multiple forum sites, it seems like it's fairly common, and i think there should be a recall set for this. thank you. *tr

I was driving down a dry solid road with no obstructions or potholes. all of a sudden my car acted like it tried to shift gears, heard a strange noise and the car acted like it would not go faster when i stepped on the gas and felt like i lost some function control of the vehicle. it has done this before but only temporarily. then the esc (electronic stability control) light started flashing all with in 2 seconds. when i realized that it was not changing, i turned the esc off and it went back to driving normally almost instantly. about a mile down the road i figured i would try to turn it back on because i remember being told by the dealership to leave it on. a few seconds passed and all of a sudden my wheels locked up and i lost control of the vehicle as my car started to turn sideways. i quickly turned off the esc button and it corrected immediately, however, it felt like the transmission had to readjust after having the wheels locked up. i do not feel safe driving this vehicle any longer. i have an email with many other people who have reported this same issue (some have had actual accidents) that i can send you. this is very concerning and should have a recall done on this before this kills someone.

2012 elantra limited fails to start when in park. battery is fine, all electrical equipment is working. engine does not crank when the push to start button is pressed. sometimes it starts after a few tries, but it would not start after trying 10 minutes yesterday. i tried again in the morning and it started without any problem. i search the web and have read that a lot of people are having this problem. people online are saying the problem is the range switch / inhabitor switch. i noticed that the issue is happening more frequently lately. if so many people are having this issue, there should be a recall on this.

I have a hyundai elantra limited, 2012, with the technology package. there are multiple issues with my car, that have occurred since i purchased it brand new off the lot in 2011. whenever i take the car to the shop to have the issues checked, i am always told that they were unable to replicate the problem, so couldn't find anything to fix. first, there are serious issues with the transmission. when taking the car out of park and into drive or reverse, it often lurches into gear, which then continues as i drive into 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and sometimes 4th gear. it shifts really hard, as if the car were a manual and i was not shifting very well between gears. a couple of months ago (~june 2015) the check engine light came on for the first time, and the shop said that it was a transmission temperature sensor error. the check engine light came on the 2nd time this week on 7/14, and turned off within 24 hours. i've continued to have this jerking shift issue, though it never seems to happen when it's at the shop. second, there is some kind of electrical issue/short in the car, because sometimes when i have windows down and i hit the lever to roll the driver's window up the sunroof also starts to open/close! or, the windows don't go up/down as hard/soft as i move the lever. also, in the past month or so (july 2015) the proximity key seems to not work, and i have to press the button on the door handle multiple (up to 10) times before the car will lock/unlock. this also prevents me from being able to start the car (ignition switch) because it doesn't recognize the key is inside the vehicle. please help!

Rear end fishtails severely when i hit a pothole, sewer lid or any bump in the road. i have come very close to hitting other cars beside me and head on from this problem. i am terrified to drive my own new car. i have taken it to two different hyundai dealerships and their service department says there is nothing wrong with the car and it operates as designed, yet they have also told me that this is a very common complaint they did lower the pressure in the tires and suggested i put cases of water in my trunk to weigh down the back end of the car. i have added 70 pounds of weight in the trunk and still it does not help at all. i have read that in the snow the problem is ten times worse. i live in a state where we get plenty of snow and i dread the thought of having to drive that car during that time. i am so disappointed i don't even have the words to express how upset that i am.

When stopped at red lights or merging from a slow speed into fast moving traffic the vehicles rpm gauge suddenly shoots up, the car shakes and then stalls for no apparent reason.

Earlier this month, two attempts to turn off/reset the red airbag symbol failed leaving me with a constant fear of safety for myself and passengers while driving my 2012 hyundai elantra. inexplicably, the red airbag symbol popped up onto my dashboard screen even though i have never been involved in a collision with this car. i am the first and only owner and sole driver of my automobile. according to mechanics who have checked the airbag problem, in the event of a collision the airbag will malfunction potentially setting off a serious scenario for driver and passengers. two attempts to readjust the airbag symbol and correct the problem were made by glendora hyundai in southern california followed by a reputable automobile repair shop. the problem could not be traced or identified using state of the art diagnostic testing, thus, the root of the problem remains a mystery. again, as long as the source of the airbag problem remains undetected the problem cannot be corrected and my vulnerability to being seriously injured is a viable specter that will no doubt be realized in the event i experience the misfortune of a vehicle to vehicle collision.

I drive in stop and go traffic to and from work. when i push on gas it makes one knock sound. when i let go it makes one knock sound. it's only once, it does not knock continuously. it started making this noise after oil change in january every so often but it has gotten to be every time i push on gas and let go now. i was told i need a transmission flush when i got the oil changed just recently in april. could this be the what is causing the knock noise? i read reviews on flushes and some say to get it done , others say it has damaged their cars transmission.

The sun visor on the passenger side is broken and will not stay up blocking visibility.

Left tail/brake light is malfunctioning. when the headlights are on, the tail light is on; however, that same light is also the brake light, and when the brake is applied, the light will not illuminate.

Periodically my car refuses to start. the battery is good, all lights on the dash are normal, headlights work, radio works, car is in parked position, yet when i turn the key it refuses to start. this is the second set of occurrences of the same issue. i experienced this issue last year (2014), at which time i had to take the car into service on more than three occasions before the figured it out. they eventually sorted out the issue in november of 2014. now 6 months after, in may 2015, the same issue occurs only to find out that hyundai will only warranty the part but not the labor costs. today while at the dealership, there was at least one other hyundai elantra owner with the same issue. i'd hate that the car refuse to start in an emergency situation this is obviously something that hyundai is aware of, yet refuse to take full responsibility and remedy the situation for myself and all other customers. i believe there should be a recall for this. i also have a second issue with this car, from the day of purchase. the car shakes at speeds between 40mph and 55mph. i have taken the car in on multiple occasions to two different hyundai dealerships, yet they cannot figure out the issue. they have balanced the tires, aligned the wheels, rotated the tires, etc, yet none of their attempts have resulted in a solution. this issue make driving the car feel very unsafe, and very unpredictable in wet conditions

Periodically my car will not start or turn over to start. the normal wear and tear parts are young and a couple forums i have found on the internet show that other people with similar model years and the same year are having the same problem. there should be a recall on this issue. it was reported it might be the range switch or the shift interlock. thank you for your concern. when i called into my local hyundai dealership they sounded perplexed.

The car won't start. this is a push button start. i thought perhaps there was something wrong with the key that has to be in the car at the time of starting the car. this is the third time this is happened in three weeks. then i went online and found out there are hundreds of other owners with the same problem. i called an online number and found out that the manufacture is aware of this problem. they are not issuing a recall but they call this a campaign and have a number for this problem which is 933. they will not pay for a rental car, but they will pay for the repair. then i called a dealer and they said they did not know anything about this problem but to bring the car in. i feel this is all hush-hush, to the disadvantage of the owner, who could find themselves in a very dangerous situation if all of a sudden there car will start. please investigate, including an online search, to determine if a nationwide mandatory recall should be initiated. *tr

This is a problem that has been going on with other elantra drivers. there are videos on you tube with this issue. the vehicle doesn't start at times and it should be a recall on this issue. this is a new car and should have issues like that. it seems to be a problem with the starter or the ignition switch. *tr

After purchasing the car new with all of 31 miles on it i noticed on my 350 mile drive home from anchorage to fairbanks alaska that the rear end of the car would skip around unpredictably when hitting a bump or when i hit an icy patch of road (and as a result of the skipping around, the rear tires wear/cup ridiculously fast, which may also be dangerous but is mostly annoying and expensive). despite a few attempts by the dealer at repairing the steering column it still does it, 30k miles later. as far as speed, it happens at any speed above about 35 mph . it is bad enough in the summer to feel like the rear end is leaving the road, but it is extremely dangerous in the winter when traction is already tenuous at best. sooner or later this is going to kill someone if it hasn't already. *tr

Vehicle accelerated on it's own, and applying break pressure only slowed vehicle but kept accelerating. hyundai reports no issues, yet this incident is all over the internet doing searches on hyundai. hyundai reports no recalls. when car placed in park mode, rpm shot to maximum of 8 and stayed there. when placed car back in drive, car rpm went to 2 and car wants to accelerate fast. please nhtsa, apply pressure for recall for this very unsafe condition on a vehicle. *tr

I turned the key to the start position so i could start the car, but it would not start up. the car was in park. i did some research on the internet, and found some videos on youtube, and people commented they were having the same issue. some people mentioned that if you turn the key so you can move the shifter from park to neutral, and back to park, the car may start up. i tried exactly this, and as soon as i attempted to move the shifter to neutral, the car started up. it appears to be a problem with the inhibitor switch, which i will try to get that replaced by the dealership if possible. since many people are experiencing this same problem, there should be a recall for this issue! *tr

My car won't start the first 4-5 times i hit the start button. the first time it happened my car was lower on gas and the outside temperature was very low. i filled the car up, ran at highway speeds for 20 minutes. the next day it was the same situation. i took it to a service garage and they tested the battery and alternator, both were perfect. i thought it might just be the cold, even though i never had these issues at lower temps. the third day it was 30 degrees...same issue. today was the fourth day, where my car won't turn over. what is going on?? this could be extremely dangerous. *js

Car would not start. after multiple attempts at turning key, it finally started. lights and horn functioned properly, but i replaced the battery anyway. car would still not start on first few attempts. engine would not turn over at all, then after several attempts at turning key, it would start, as if nothing was wrong. brought it to dealer, they said they cleaned out some parts of the engine and updated the computer. the next day i had the same problem again. brought it to the dealer, and they said they changed some fuses. less than a week later, still the same problem. there are multiple incidents of this happening for other owners of this car which i found online when i was looking to diagnose the problem. *tr

On three occasions the past 2 weeks, my car would not start. in researching the issue, i find that this is a common occurrence with 2012 and 2013 elantras. while this is not a safety problem with vehicle performance, it is a safety issue for the driver finding out that your car won't start and it's the middle of the winter. hyundai needs to address this common issue and issue a recall to repair the defective part(s). *tr

Sunroof shattered traveling down the interstate at 70 mph in very light traffic, heard a loud noise on top of car. soon realized by the wind noise that the sunroof had broken. pulled off at next exit, observed shattered sunroof glass. concerned this is a defect - as there was no traffic around to throw anything into the roof of the car, and it did not happen after passing under an overpass. there was no explanation for the damage. *tr

Inability of hyundai manufactured wipers to clear rain, and added streaks. driving in rainstorm became very dangerous. am filing complaint now, however, have had wipers replaced on 2 occasions in order to address this issue. *tr

We were on vacation in the smoky mountains. we hiked for a couple hours and returned to the car. i turned the ignition key, nothing. tried several times, nothing. lights came on bright, power windows worked, dashboard lights bright. i tried taking it in and out of park, tried turning the key different speeds, nothing. the engine did not try to turn over, no clicking, just silence. we tried to get help, no one stopped. after an hour or so, tried it again, started right up. we drove back to our cabin. it started fine the rest of the time we were there. when we got back home, took it to the hyundai dealer. explained the problem. he said if it was working fine now, not much they could do. he also advised me that if they diagnosed it for days, found the problem, but it was a loose connection or something that did not require replacing a part, the entire labor cost was mine to pay. that's when i found out that the hyundai 5 year, 60k warranty does not cover labor after 36k. ouch! a buyer beware/read the fine print moment. so, i left since it hadn't happened in a couple weeks. this first incident was in mid-october. three weeks ago, after 2 months, around dec 20th, 2014, it happened again. same thing. just dead. battery fine. everything working but the car. tried a half dozen times, moving the tranny shifter, etc. went in the house, came back out, started like nothing was wrong. a week ago, same. this morning, jan 8, 2015, again, same thing. i checked the battery and connections, both fine. after 20 minutes or so, tried again, started. it is happening more now. i researched on the internet and hundreds of folks have had the same problem with this make, model, and year. there also are you tube videos of it. so, this makes me wonder why there hasn't been a recall. my elantra has almost 59k on it, so i will be at the 60k limit in a month or so. what can i do? The car wouldn't crank or start when i got to the gas station. after multiple tries with putting the car shifter in park to neutral and switching the gears it finally started. i called the dealership and took it down to get looked at. as i was driving it down to the dealership as i was approaching the traffic light i realized the car wasn't running anymore and by this point i had limited brake assistance and also lost all power steering and had to use the e-brake to help with stopping the vehicle to prevent the accident that was about to happen. this was a great thing that i was driving and not my wife as she would've froze and might not have been able to think how to get the car to stop in which this could have been a accident with bodily injury or even possible death of the person driving the car or the innocent person that was collected up in the accident but no one would know as it didn't happen, thank god for this. i had the car towed the rest of the way to the dealership and they looked at it and the car started for them and they tested the battery, alternator, and starter and all tested good so they gave the car back to me stating it was the ac invert-or that was plugged in to the cigarette lighter. i told them that i plugged the invert-or in after the car died to charge my phone but they still insisted that i was lying i guess. i drove the car off the lot and a few days later the same thing happened again but i was going 35 mph and was able to stop the car with no incident as i was afraid to drive the car normal speed and knew it would happen again as the dealer ship had not found anything faulty. now it sits in the driveway and is completely dead and will not start. the dealership major hyundai of stroudsburg, pa 18360 will not allow me to bring my car back to them and hyundai will only tow it to the closest dealership which happens to be them. *tr

Car won't start on several occasions. for about a week straight, i would try to start my car in the morning and it would not start. all lights come on in the car so it's not the battery. after about 3 tries, car starts. also happens when i leave work at lunch time after it has been just sitting for a few hours. usually it starts after 2 or 3 tries and turning the key all the way and holding it there until it does. a few times i have had to put it in neutral to start it. after about a week, it stopped doing it. now a month later, it is doing it again and getting harder and harder to start. today it took like 10 tries to get it started. dealer says it has to be doing it for them to figure it out but it's not doing it every time consistently. will take it there today and hopefully it will do it for them as well. reading the complaints on this forum, it seems like there are many complaints about same issue. hyundai needs to figure this out and do a recall. this will be my last hyundai if it is not resolved. *js

My 2012 hyundai elantra gls would not start this morning. i last drove my car home & parked it on 18th december and was home by 6pm. my car sat until the 20th of december around 9 pm when i went out to start it to check the fuel level. my car sat till 6:20 am on the 21st of december. i hit my door unlock on my key fob and the doors unlocked from there i proceeded to start my car. everything started but the car. i turned back to the starting position and tried again. same results. after review of my issue on various forums the "range switch" continues to be the faulty part. *tr

My hyundai elantra 2012 gls sedan was sold as having daytime running lights (drls) according to monroney sticker. nhtsa and iihs dictate that "daytime running lights (drls) are headlights that are lit whenever a vehicle is running. a low-cost method to reduce crashes, they are especially effective in preventing daytime head-on and front-corner collisions by making it easier to see vehicles, particularly as they approach from far away." however, drls do not engage automatically when my vehicle is started, against to nhtsa and iihs drls definition. in order to operate drls in my hyundai elantra 2012, parking lights have to be engaged. in other words, when drls are operational, amber side parking lights and the rear tail lights are also on, which obviously masks turn and stop signals and in my opinion could represent a very real road safety issue. in addition, when drls are engaged, the interior gauge lights are automatically dimmed to a night driving level, which makes it much harder to read the gauge during daytime and represents a potential safety issue as well. contacting multiple local hyundai dealerships and hyundai eastern region hqs was futile, since the only answer i was getting is that this is "a new design drls" and nothing will be done to address the issue. ironically, it looks to me the end result of this "new design" represents not an increased safety for my vehicle (according to publications dot hs 809 760 and dot hs 811 029 drls are an important safety feature), but rather an increased risk of a collision due to masking turn and stop signals, and substantial dimming of the cabin. i noticed there are multiple complaints of this nature on the nhtsa website both for 2012 and 2013 hyundai elantra. i would like to thank you for taking time to read my complaint, and i would ask nhtsa team to look into the situation promptly and to address this safety issue. *tr

2012 hyundai elantra. consumer had to replace battery as an out of pocket expense. the dealer stated the battery was not under warrant, so a reimbursement is being requested. the consumer returned to the dealer for the third time, because the vehicle would not start. the consumer stated there was an obvious problem with the battery. *jb

Hello, well, i am the first owner, and there was not any accident before. last thursday, after i started my car, i tried to shift the gear to drive, and the car was suddenly shook. i kept tried to drive it, but whenever the rpm goes up to 2000, the car was bouncing like that i stepped on the brake or so. i was not even able to drive it, and it was even so dangerous to drive. therefore, i just tried it again at night, and the engine light turned on. i put my car into the fitzgerald hyundai service center in gaithersburg, md on friday morning (11/7/14), and i got my car back yesterday. when i picked up my car, i asked them what was the wrong with it, and they told me that the transmission sensor did not lead the temperature. therefore, i told them that i put my car into the hyundai service center in fairfax, va three months ago for the exact same problem, and the fairfax representative told me that they could not find any problems with it, so they just reset the software so that it is going to be fine. however, this happened again after few months. a man from fitzgerald told me that this time they update some numbers, so it is going to be fine. i do not know whenever this happens, the engine light turned on, too, and it seems like that it is breaking transmission and the engine together. since this was not my first time, i reported this to the hyundai recall service center. they called me yesterday and told me that they do not know the reason, but they fixed it. how come they can fix it even if they do not know the reason? i kept complained about it, and they just told me that they will expand the dates for the warranty so that i can fix it whenever it happens again! they also said that they do not know the next step for it. how irresponsible! now, all i can think of is that this is the defected car. can you please investigate this? thank you. *tr

Last oct. i noticed my tires on the rear of my car were bald .i took it to the dealership to have it looked at they would not do anything with it . so i talked to the owner he agreed to replace them. they checked the alignment said nothing was wrong. put new tires on ,now one year later tires are bald again. dealer said they would not do anything for me . hyundai said they will not do anything. the car has only 32000 miles on it. this is going to be the 2nd. set of tires on the rear in 1 year .please let me know what i can do to resolve this problem. thank you *tr

Car would not start when key turned. dash lights came on, but engine would not turn over or even crank. the only sound was a slight click in the engine when the key was turned. jump start would not help. remedied by turning the key until i could shift out of park to another gear, then returned to park. did this multiple times and finally the car started normally. concerned about losing power when driving and having an accident, or getting stranded somewhere. called dealer and was told that they could check for battery issues (which it is not), but to call them if it happened again (hopefully, not while driving). *tr

A few days before this incident, a warning indicator light appeared on my instrument panel. i made an appointment for that weekend to have it checked at a local dealership. as i was driving home from work, the first unusual thing that happened was the hyundai logo appeared on the nav screen while the car was in motion.typically the hyundai logo only appears when the car is first started-never while vehicle is in motion. about 10 miles later, all of the power to the vehicle disappeared as i was driving about 65 mph in heavy traffic. when this happened, it felt as if i had been rear-ended in an accident. after determining that was not the case, i looked at the instrument panel to see all the warning lights illuminated. now i'm trying to move to the side of the highway when the power was magically restored and the warning indicator light that had appeared a few days prior was now gone. i did not have an opportunity to pull to the side of the road, put the transmission in park and attempt to restart the vehicle. no, it restarted all by itself! i took it to two different dealerships who both assured me the car was fine and that what i described was impossible to occur. trust me when i tell you that unless you've experienced losing all power to a vehicle while driving at 65 mph, yet here is not another feeling like it. i no longer felt safe in my own vehicle and made arrangements for it to be replaced. i would have felt much more comfortable had the dealership(s) found something that could have been repaired. given that they could find nothing wrong left me very leery of the vehicle's electrical system. also, the mpg gauge would reset itself; at idle, it frequently almost stalled; at night, the headlights would flicker at idle; the compass readout on the rear view mirror would also flicker at idle when the vehicle almost stalled---very bizarre behavior from a vehicle. *tr

Had just had my car in for my 20,000 mile check one week ago. had tires rotated and all the other recommended service. was driving on highway, good weather in atlanta, ga, and tire pressure gauge went on. i exited the highway (fortunately i was in a location where i could and it was evening with less traffic than the norm) to find a station to check tires and put in air in. one tire had a bubble/bulge in the sidewall and all four tires were showing a pressure of 29/30....down that much in one week with no significant weather changes, i haven't hit any potholes or bumps, or any reason why this should be the case. very frustrated and afraid to drive, especially after reading all the horror stories about the wheels/rims/tires on this car being the wrong size for the car. please do something about this sooner rather than later before someone dies! why must that always happen before anything is done? *tr

When riding the vehicle at 60 -70 mph, and hitting a normal bump/hole in the road, the stability control makes very aggressive adjustments in the rear of the car and make you feel you are losing control of the car. during winter/snowy roads there is weak stability in the rear suspension. this is really scary!. please help us identify what is the issue with this vehicle. thanks *tr

My 2012 elantra has failed to start 3 times while it was in park and 2 times while i was on the freeway in a period of 12 months. there was no warning while i was on the freeway. all dashboard lights were on, radio was on and it was until i tried to accelerate when i realized that the car had turned off on me. luckily, it was in heavy traffic going about 15 miles per hour, nonetheless, it was a pretty nerve wrecking unsafe experience. i was able to turn the car back on after 3-4 attempts. my biggest fear is that the car can potentially turn off on me when i'm going 60+ mph. i drive my kids everywhere in this car and i fear for the safety of my family. i have taken it to the dealer after every incident and their main response is that they cannot duplicate the problem, therefore, they can't fix it. at one point, they claimed that it could be due to carbon build up in the engine so i paid ~$300 for that service which did not help because the car turned off on the freeway several months later. i have even had the hyundai tow truck from roadside assistance tow my car from my work parking lot to the dealer in hopes that it was proof that the car did not turn on. tow truck driver confirmed the car did not turn on, then prepped car to place on tow truck bed. he got the car to dealer, then attempted to turn on the car and it did. i tried to get documentation from him but he declined. all i got was a letter that stated that the car was taken from my work parking lot to the dealer with zero details. the dealer is being irresponsible and does not stand behind their product. this is a huge safety issue. i am in the process of pursuing the lemon law and going to bbb for arbitration in hopes that they take the car back. i feel like i don't have an alternative. i cannot, with a clear conscious, sell this car to a dealer or a private party knowing that it is defective. *tr

When turning on the ignition switch the car interior lights light up. turning the key to the ignition position, nothing happens. there is no draw on the dash lights or any other lights on the car. it simply has no noticeable effect. i have to turn the key off and on numerous times before it starts. not starting is, of course, a concern. the expenses from taking it to a mechanic has become a real drain on our finances. however, if it begins to turn off while we are driving, serious injuries may occur. {ref: chevy cobalt} please investigate this issue. getting ahead of this could prevent more tragic occurrences. *tr

A few weeks ago, my 2012 hyundai elantra would not start. i googled the issue and it seems that this has affected numerous hyundai drivers. the issue ended up being that the range switch had to be replaced. i don't know if this is something that should be considered as a recall. thanks. *tr

I have had multiple instances where my car has trouble starting, or will not start at all. beginning in 2012, when the car had to be towed to the local dealer (tustin hyundai - patterson's) as it wouldn't start. the dealer had the car for roughly three weeks straight, and could not find a problem, so they decided to replace the fuel pump system. then again in february 2013, my car still had issues starting properly, and the dealer and corporate headquarters were contacted. additionally, on october 4th, my car would not start once again, and finally, after three times, it started. it is currently at glendale hyundai for the same issue. i purchased this car brand new in 2012, and have had nothing but trouble. from the issues with starting, to my windows not rolling up. the start issue is a major problem and safety malfunction. as a young woman, i do not feel safe driving my car alone at night or long distances as i cannot count on it being reliable. hyundai needs to issue a recall, as a simple google search brings up multiple others who have had similar issues, only to be told there is not a resolution. *tr

While stopped in traffic (restaurant drive thru lane), vehicle lurched forward; attempted to put transmission shifter into park (automatic transmission) to check the problem; vehicle would not go into park or reverse; would only go into drive or neutral. hyundai dealer inspected and identified problem as a defective shift assembly. i have been in contact with hyundai customer care expressing concerns regarding potential safety issues (not being able to reverse vehicle; vehicle not being able to be restarted if engine died). vehicle is only 2 years old and just out of the 60,000 warranty period. hyundai (at this point) is refusing to repair under customer good will. *tr

The vehicle would not start, all lights / accessories were in perfect working order, but the engine would do nothing when the key was turned to the start position. the first time this happened we had the vehicle towed to the dealership where we purchased it new. after recommending a fuel system treatment - which we had previously undergone at 40k - we declined. the net result of this visit was that nothing was wrong with the car. after experiencing the same problem a few more times (9/8,9/9,9/21, 9/23 all roadside assistance calls), sometimes being able to start the car after a few minutes - sometimes not. we find ourselves at an impass with the dealership. they are telling us they will no longer be able to run a diagnostic without charging us the fee - even though when i bought the car i paid in excess of $1200 for the 100000 bumper to bumper extended warranty. *tr

I've had the following issues with the 2012 elantra: 1.) the vehicle would not start. this only happens intermittently so it is hard to predict when it will occur and where you will be stranded. all indicator lights will turn on but when i turned the ignition all the way nothing happens. i brought the car to the dealer since it still under warranty but the dealer had no idea how to fix the issue. they had my car for 3 weeks now and still trying to figure what is wrong with the car. 2.) there are also instance where the engine starts but the gear gets stuck in park and cannot switch to other gear. i had to turn the engine off and try to restart. 3.) the battery light indicator briefly lights up at 60 mph. *tr

Within the first year of owning my 2012 elantra, i started having an issue with the car not starting. dash would light up normally, and radio, etc worked fine, however the engine would not try to turn over at all or make any noise whatsoever. the problem is that the car is not sensing that the car is in park. the dash will normally display p (for park), however in these instances the dash is blank where the transmission position should be displayed. the shifter is also stuck in park so i can not move to any other gear. in order to resolve this issue, i have to use the shift overide and move the car out of park and then back into park. the dash will then display the p, and i can start the car normally. i have taken to the dealer on two occasions, and their computer diagnostics don't detect any problems. they said if they can't repeat the problem then they won't change out any components. this is frustrating because there is no way i can get it to the dealer when the problem is occurring. *tr

I left home for a 1,000 mile road trip starting on the date specified above. mileage indicated above is a close approximation to when the incident first occurred. on the first day, i stopped for gasoline at a station. when i tried to start the car back up, i had power to everything but my car made no attempt to start. after trying several times over the course of about 5-10 minutes, it finally started and ran fine. this happened five times over the course of the trip lasted 8 days. i have made an appointment at the dealership to look it over, again. i say "again" because i took the car in to the dealership less than 500 miles prior for what i believe to be a related issue. the automatic transmission shift lever would not leave the "drive" position when i stopped at one point and needed to get out of the car. i could not because i could not put it in "park", gear shift lever was stuck in "drive". back to the "won't start" issue - wiggling the automatic transmission shift lever seems to have helped me start the car when it previously would not. dealer said they could not find the cause of the stuck automatic transmission shift lever. *tr

The vehicle failed to start on the first attempt. all of the interior electrical components appeared to be working. the engine failed to turn over. after several attempts, the car started. the vehicle started dozens of times over the next few days without issue. however, the failure to start has recurred twice more in the past four days. this does not appear to be a battery issue. *tr

The vehicle in question periodically fails to start. this has been an ongoing issue with this vehicle for several months. at first the vehicle would not start on occasion but has since began having starting issues more frequently. i contacted my dealer and was told of two possible issues regarding a stop lamp switch and a faulty starter. i brought the vehicle in and they were unable to identify a problem. i contacted hyundai usa and they were unaware of an issue regarding my specific vehicle as there are no recalls for this specific issue but there are recalls regarding this same issue but with other vehicles. i feel that hyundai is not standing behind their products with their warranty and i do not know on a daily basis if my vehicle is going to start the next time i attempt it. *tr

On several occasions, i had noticed that it was hard to shift to park from the reverse and drive gear positions. it seemed as if the gear would jam on something and after a while of trying to get it to move forward it would advance to the park position. now, just yesterday i was getting into my car from work and when i attempted to start it just said quite. everything else worked, but the engine would not turn. i attempted to shift out of park and it would not let me. i pressed on the brake pedal so that it would release but it did not work. i must have tried 10 times to start it and as i was about to call the tow truck , i tried it one more time and then it started. *tr

Yesterday afternoon i got into my car to go to the store, and it wouldn't start. i continued to turn the key to on position, then back off and wouldn't start. then tried again in then it finally started barely. again i got into my car to go to work, and it wouldn't start again. i switched the key back off position and on again and still no start. tried it again 2 more times to start and finally it started up. i had this issue about a year ago about a month after i purchased my vehicle and got it towed to dealership and they found nothing because it started right up for them. please let me know what to do to get this issue from occurring. *tr

Several weeks ago, on a sunday, i got into my 2012 hyundai elantra in the parking lot of the local kroger and tried to start the car. it refused to start or turn over. it didn't make a sound. the lights, radio, etc. worked fine, but the car would not start after repeated attempts. i called a friend who came over and jumped me off. i thought this could be related to my battery, but for the next two weeks, i had no problems. this past sunday, august 24, i put the key in the ignition and it gave a little hiccup, as if it wasn't going to start, but then it started anyway. i made a short trip into town, stopped at the store, came back and the car still started fine. but the next morning, monday, aug. 25, it would not start after repeated attempts. my neighbor gave me a jump-off - it took a couple of minutes, but finally the car started. i assumed this was definitely the battery, so i headed to autozone and got a new battery installed. several days passed, and everything was fine. on thursday morning, august 28, it wouldn't start again. i tried repeatedly, no luck. i called a friend, who came over to jump it off. still wouldn't start. i called hyundai roadside assistance and they had it towed to pride hyundai, a dealership in batesville, miss. i got a ride to work and, later, i got a call from pride hyundai. they said the car started just fine. they also reported that the tow truck driver said it started for him as well. i explained the situation and they said they'd look at it. hours later, i called them back (since it was clear they had forgotten to call me) and they said they'd hooked it up to the computer and found no problems. i asked them to keep it overnight and try it again the next morning. the lady on the phone went out to the lot and came back - she said it started fine for her and again she insisted they could find nothing wrong with my car.

After sitting overnight, vehicle failed to start following morning. although all components requiring power (windows, headlights, radio, interior lights, etc.) seemed to be functioning ok, jump started vehicle, and it started immediately. a few days later problem recurred; let vehicle sit for some time, and vehicle then started immediately (no jump start). today problem occurred yet again (waiting to see if vehicle will eventually start). a quick review of online forums indicates a possible issue with the shift interlock, or perhaps a faulty rain sensor. as an aside, a longer-term sporadic, presumably electrical, issue also exists with the passenger side front window. the window will go down without issue, but it often takes multiple attempts from either the passenger side or driver's side window control to get the window back up. *tr

2012 hyundai elantra. consumer writes in regards to vehicle tires issue. *smd the consumer experienced a flat on february 7, 2012. upon opening the trunk, she discovered there was no spare tire, or a tire mobility kit . when the consumer contacted the dealer, they informed her there was a tire mobility kit in the vehicle. however, the consumer stated there wasn't. on april 6, 2012, the consumer experienced another flat tire.

The car will not start once it is turned off. it could start once and go to the store, and then lock up for a few hours. eventually it will act normal again ad then start all over again. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 hyundai elantra. while driving various speeds, the vehicle would suddenly decelerate without warning and the abs sensor illuminated. the contact stated that the failure occurred when the accelerator pedal was depressed. the vehicle would skid and the contact would lose control of the vehicle. the dealer was unable to diagnose the cause of the failure. the manufacturer was notified, but no solution was offered. the failure mileage was 32,000.

My 2012 hyundai elantra would not start this morning and this was the third time this has happened starting in may 2014. i hit my door unlock on my key fab and the doors unlocked from here i proceeded start my car. everything started but the car. i turned back to the starting position and tried again same results. i waited a few minutes and tried again amazingly it started. what is going on with my car? this has happen before the first time called a tow truck driver and by the time he arrived it started . this was followed by a visit to north county hyundai in carlsbad,ca. of course the dealership found nothing wrong . again what is wrong with my car? *tr

My 2012 elantra started fine this morning and every day previously, but when i went to start it after shopping, it wouldn't start. i turned the key in the ignition switch and nothing. however, all of the lights inside worked. i tried several times to get it to start and it finally started. i came home and then after a couple of hours, i went out to go somewhere and once again, it wouldn't start. after 3-4 times of turning the key, it finally started. i currently have it ready to be picked up to go to the dealership as i am assuming it will not start again the next time. i have read numerous complaints with the exact same issue as well as viewing videos of the same exact thing happening. i purchased this car new in june of 2012 so i wouldn't have to have to worry about getting stranded, but i may be regretting my decision. *tr

Whenever i try to turn on my car everything turns on except the engine. the lights and everything are fine. the battery tests fine. i have been to the dealer 3 times and they say nothing is wrong with it. it has not started approximately 15-20 times. based on accounts from others with the same vehicle who have had this problem the engine has also stopped in the middle of driving. thankfully the issue has only ever occurred when my car is parked, but i'd really rather not risk it happening on the road in rush hour traffic. *tr

The car just wouldn't start , it worked fine the previous evening and it locked as well . today morning nothing works ,i had to manually open the car with the key , after i placed the key in the ignition nothing lighted up on the dashboard . tried multiple times . *tr

Intermittent problem: car didn't turn over. i waited a few minutes, tried it again and it started. dealer couldn't find the problem. second occurrence: wouldn't start, then it did when i tried it a third time. that same day, car was idling for about 3 minutes as i was sitting in it. i had put it in park and when i tried to put it in drive, it wouldn't budge out of park. i turned the car off (fearing the worst) and it started and allowed me to put it in drive. *tr

I attempted to start my car last night and it didn't start, lights were on full power and everything but not a sound from the engine... tried many many times didn't start. then randomly it started. drove home parked went out this morning and tried again did not start. i have tried many times this morning but again it has not started. *tr

One day in june, i tried to start my car and the park sensor above my odometer would not show. because of this, the car wouldn't start at all. i had to continue to try to start the car, by turning the key multiple times inside the ignition and pressing my foot onto the pedal. it finally started, but not without apprehension on my part. the rest of the time, the car worked ok for the most part, but whenever i reached a traffic light it would act as if it were parked and acted a bit funny. the story above happened 8 more times over the next few weeks. i had the battery checked to see if it was a battery problem, only to realize the battery was fine. i tried other techniques, such as turning the key completely 90 degrees, but that didn't solve it. finally, i went to the dealer and upon my story being shared, the mechanics immediately told me that the transmission range switch was not working. they had noticed more hyundai elantra 2012 cars in the past few days having the same issue. since i am under the 5 year / 60,000 mile warranty, this issue was fixed at no cost. however, while this issue was fixed at my end. i would hope this story would spur a further investigation into the transmission range switches on all hyundai elantra 2012s and see what issues (if any) could result over a faulted transmission range switch. *tr

There appears to be an issue with the ignition switch that may be due to the switch overheating. what happens is that i will park my car and when i return a few minutes later and try to start the car nothing happens when i turn the ignition switch. if you go to youtube.com and type 2012 hyundai elantra ignition problem into the search engine you will see other 2012 elantra owners posting videos of the same problem. i called my dealership which stated there is no recall of the 2012 elantra. again since other 2012 elantra owners are posting this on youtube that tells me this is not an isolated incident. *tr

The car shut itself off while we were driving. the car would not restart or shift into park and the key would not come out. finally got the car to start in neutral and car sputtered and it registered no rpms, so it didn't move. after about 20 minutes car did start in neutral and we were able to make it home. *tr

Turn key in ignition. nothing happens. turn off, turn on, eventually ignition works and car turns on. this happened multiple times before first visit to dealer to try to remedy issue. first trip to dealer 5/14/14. dealer can't recreate problem. problem continues. 6/11/14: turn key, car won't start, turn off, turn on, car wont start. after several tries, hyundai dealer called, sends a tow truck. tow truck driver turns key. won't start. tow truck driver says you need to turn the key and hold it down to "reset the computer, reset the brake switch." he does this and car starts. he tows it to dealer 6/11/14. dealer can't recreate problem (sands down painted ground areas). 6/26/14- car starts but is stuck in park, can't shift to drive. turn off. turn back on. able to shift to drive. later same day 6/26/14, turn key in ignition. nothing happens. hold key down as instructed by tow truck driver on 6/11. turn off, turn back on, car starts. read up on the issue online. symptoms sound similar to brake switch recall issues on earlier models. *tr

During normal vehicle operation at approx. 45 mph, dry pavement, the vehicle brakes suddenly locked up, causing the vehicle to skid left into oncoming traffic with tires screeching. during the skid into oncoming traffic and a frightening attempt to control the vehicle, the abs light blinked several times then went off. this could have resulted in deadly consequences had i been driving in heavy traffic or on an interstate. ( a few days prior, while traveling at approx. 50 mph the brakes were making a horrific grinding noise with no pressure applied to the brake pedal. this resulted in decrease of speed in the vehicle in which it would not accelerate above 40 mph.) the vehicle was towed to the hyundai dealer where they questioned if there was any problem. the computer readings were all good and showed no problems with the vehicle. finally, after a service technician driving it home for the night and experiencing the problem twice himself, they realized there was a serious issue with the brakes. the hecu (hydraulic electronic control unit) had failed at 31,685 miles. this is the answer the service department has given for the problem. the vehicle is still currently in the service department being repaired. i am still in fear of driving this vehicle even though it is being repaired. *tr

I was driving in dry weather and on normal road conditions when the esc light begin to blink for no apparent reason. i could not accelerate when this occurred, and then the vehicle brakes locked up. luckily, i was entering onto a on ramp and the vehicle skidded to a stop onto the shoulder. if this would have occurred while traveling at a higher rate of speed it could have been very dangerous. i had the vehicle towed to a nearby hyundai dealership for review of the issue. *tr

Vehicle brought to lester glenn hyundai toms river nj on march 21, 2014 for noise in engine or trans...said there was nothing wrong..they pushed car out and told me it was a clamp for my exhaust..i continued to hear noise..(it did not happen all the time) so the car was returned to the dealer 3 weeks later..they did diagnostics on vehicle and pushed my car out telling me that i had "aggressive tires" on the vehicle.and they charged me 243.00 for diagnostics..my vehicle is under warranty..they told me if i didn't pay i wouldn't get my car back...i have brand new cooper touring tires on and the problem was there before the tires..on 05/12/2014 i drove to new york to visit my daughter and when i left was on 278 west traveling to toms river nj . i was on 278 for approximately 5 minutes ..i tried to accelerate and the car wouldn't move..the rpm's were going crazy, speed of vehicle would not accelerate more than 25mph..white smoke started pouring out of rear and undercarriage of vehicle..it was not overheating..my pressure fine..i managed to get to side of brooklyn queens expressway and shut vehicle off..3 pedestrians stopped because they thought my vehicle was on fire..a tow was called..arrived in 1.5 hours..only 1 tow company allowed on the bqe..i had no choice but to take the tow..it cost me $660.00 to get my vehicle back to lester glenn hyundai..toms river nj...they diagnosed my vehicle saying it was pcv valve ..i do not feel like my vehicle was fixed and i feel very unsafe in it..i work in a full service garage and i had at least 15 mechanics look at my vehicle..they all say its in the transmission and now i do not want to drive my car more than 20 miles..can you help me?? *tr

Cpsc: i1440033a. 2012 hyundai elantra. consumer stated that there is something wrong with the car brake system. *ln the mechanic resurface the rotors, but stated the calipers were not functioning properly and it would happen again. a few months later, the grinding noise returned. *jb

I accelerated out of a parking lot and then lost power because the car went out of time and started misfiring. then white smoke started coming out of my tailpipe. the car behind me almost hit me. this is the second time my car has misfired. the check engine light came on. the reason i know it misfired is because i have a code reader and it said cylinder 1 & 2 misfire. i pulled over and turned off the car, waited about 5 minutes, restarted it and the car runs fine. the dealer cannot do anything about it because they cannot recreate the problem and by the time i get the car to them the engine light goes off. strange behavior with this car.

Driver attempting to brake but the brake system failed and hit another car, also upon impact the airbags did not deployed to protect the driver considering how severely the front area of the car were damaged. 2 days prior to the accident, car was not starting, was jumped- start and vehicle was brought to hyundai service and they did not see anything wrong. *tr

Pothole induced tire failure - torn sidewall. the limited edition of this car is fitted with 17" rims -- stock tire is a 215.45.17. with approximately 22,000 miles of driving, we have destroyed three tires on potholes, fortunately all were at low speed and there was no loss of control. however, hitting a pothole or other break in the pavement at high speed could easily destroy the tire and cause the vehicle to go out of control. the aspect ratio is simply to small for safety. a review of automotive forums indicates this is a common problem for hyundai elantras with 17" rims. i was hesitant to let my children drive the car on the highway. at our own expense we have replaced the stock wheels and tires with a 16" wheel and larger aspect tire. *tr

I purchased this car in june 2011 and there have been three separate times that my car will not start. the first time was a few months after i first purchased my car. i went to start my car in the morning and it would not cut on. after letting it sit for the day i tried it and it turned on with no problems. the second incident happened september 2013. i went to start my car in the morning. it would crank but not turn over. i let is sit for about 3 days and everyday i would try it and it still would not start. i finally had it towed to a hyundai dealer near me and they ran tests and everything came back fine and was told the car started for them with no problem and i probably didn't push in on the clutch all the way. even though the tow truck driver also tried it and would not start for him too. the most recent incident the same issue happened. car would crank and not turn over. i did some research online and saw from another hyundai owner that they had to pump their gas pedal to get their car to start. once i tried that the car started after a few minutes. this time i drove it to the hyundai dealer where i purchased the car and once again all tests came back fine and they cannot find a problem. *tr

My 2012 hyundai elantra was hit in what i believe is known as the b-pillar on the passenger side (the center column between the front and rear doors).i am uncertain how fast the other vehicle was going but it was fast enough to do approximately $6000 worth of damage, and i suffered a head and back injury.thankfully i did not have any passengers of the airbags deployed.i normally have both of my children in the rear seat but they were not with me at the time of the accident.i have been given several explanations as to why the side curtain airbags did not deploy, none of which make sense to me.i understand that airbags themselves can cause harm and they are designed only to deploy when needed. with that being said, the impact point on my vehicle seems to be at exactly the point of the sensor in that pillar (according to the illustration in my owner's manual).i recognize that my car can sense whether i have a front seat passenger, but i am not aware of a sensor being in the rear seat. i worry about what the result would have been if one of my children had been in that rear seat.my vehicle was deemed unsafe to drive so i had to leave it at a body shop the day after the accident.i am unable to transport it to the dealership for inspection and the dealership tells me they are unable to inspect it at the body shop.they tell me to bring it in for inspection after the repair.the body shop tells me they have to rely on the vehicle's computer system to display a problem if there is one.at this point, i have little faith in the vehicle and am unwilling to accept a failure of the light to come on as a proof that everything is working properly.additionally, i purchased the vehicle brand new-the exterior is red and the interior is black. i later learned that this color combination was never an option, leaving me to question the quality assurance measures in place. *tr

The car intermittently will not start. initially, it would spontaneously start after about 5 minutes of waiting. later, it would not start until you'd wait about 3 hours. been in the shop, where i purchased it new, about six times for the same problem. i have to have the car towed in. they say they have no idea how to fix the problem. if this problem happens at night, and i'm stuck in my rural town or at my urban office, my very life is at stake. and i can't get the dealer to fix or replace this lemon. *tr

Car will periodically not start - all warning lights come on and there is a humming sound. often occurs when wheel is on an angle. car will typically not start 4-5 times in a row. overhead lights work at the time of the failure. a few minutes later, after much jiggling of the steering wheel while turning on ignition, it starts fine. one time it started after emergency brake was released and the car rolled a bit. brought to dealer who could not replicate problem but acknowledged this problem had occurred with other elantras. dealer was about to release car when driver demonstrated that gear shift would not move out of park. dealer found code c1513 brake switch shorted. brake switch was replaced. dealer kept car a few days with no replications. 7 days later, starting problem recurred at driver's home and again after a day at work. in both cases, wheel was not in "12 o"clock" position. in conversation with dealer, we discussed that when the steering wheel is locked (not sure of definition), car should not start. he recommended jiggling the wheel while turning ignition. he also explained that the gear shift will only move out of park if 1) ignition is in on position and 2) foot is on the brake. why is steering wheel locking so often? *tr

Have had 3 instances during warm/hot weather that the esc light has come on (blinking) during normal city driving (after a little freeway driving & using the ac) & the vehicle performance is impaired due to the esc (no pwr or inadvertent braking w/o driver braking). only way to bypass this is by using the esc off button. it appears to go away after the car is shut off & cooled down. guessing that this is some kind of heat related problem (maybe a short) which causes the esc to improperly kick in. *tr

The vehicle has the same problems described in the 2011 recall with the brake switch. my cruise control sometimes does not work and 3 times has cut off on its own. it will not cut back on till vehicle is pulled over and stopped. i was told the problem could not be reproduced but its happening more frequently and im not satisfied with either cocoa beach or melbourne dealer. i have a recurring clutch pedal issue as well and do not trust their technicians any longer. i will just drive the car till it leaves me stranded or in a wreck. westland hyundai however has never had a repeat repair. im not sure why their techs are so much more reliable. wish i still lived in utah to have my issues resolved. *tr

I am the owner of a 2012 hyundai elantra. i believe this car has a problem with the steering system! i have taken the car to the selling dealer and was told it needed an alignment at a cost of $90.00 (not covered by warranty). i had the alignment done and it did not correct the problem! i contacted hyundai customer assistance and was told to take the car to another dealer for evaluation. the customer service person told me to expect to be charged for repairs not covered by warranty! the second dealer also said the car needed alignment at a cost of $100.00! i declined this repair; it had not corrected the problem the first time! i contacted hyundai customer service again and was told this is being moved up regional! i have not had any contact from hyundai regional as of this date! i believe hyundai is aware there is a serious problem with the steering systems on 2011, 2012 and 2013 hyundai elantra and has no plan to issue a recall until someone dies! i believe hyundai's public position on this matter it to tell customers there is nothing wrong with their cars; they just need alignment, at the customers expense! i believe hyundai has adopted the position that if a customer is charged often enough, they will stop complaining, drive the car or trade it for another brand! either way, hyundai is off the hook! i do not plan to be hyundai's test subject!!! i will continue to pursue a solution to this problem up to asking hyundai to buy the car back from me! *tr

The front pillars create very large blind spots, especially when turning. the rear view mirrors are not sufficient. due to the upsweep design of back windows the rear pillars create large blind spots when changing lanes. on numerous occasions i have almost wrecked because of this. i will be getting rid of this car due to the very poor and dangerous visibility. *tr

When i accelerate and every time the gear changes, the car would jolt as if i went over a speed bump. it's really uncomfortable when the car jolts while i accelerate, but the real problem is when i'm applying the brakes. the car would jolt and the speed would increase which nearly caused several accidents. i currently have about 13,000 miles and purchased this vehicle about 1.5 years ago. within that time, the ignition wouldn't start. i would ignite the car and the car would eventually die on me. people said it might be the spark plugs, transmission or even the battery. however, it didn't make sense because the car was purchased only a couple of months before that incident. i never even wasted my battery in any way either. what if the car decides to turn off while i'm on the freeway? i can't afford that to happen. *tr

On october 19,2012, i was driving on 94 e in milwaukee, wisconsin and got into an accident involving four vehicles. the traffic was going at a steady pace around 60 mph. the next thing i saw was brake lights and the car in front of me hitting the vehicle in front of him. i knew i would not be able to stop in time and hit the car in front of me and i also was hit from behind. i was the 3rd of 4 vehicles so my car was damaged in the front and the back. the damage was estimated at around $13,000. none of the airbags deployed. i went to the emergency room upon the night of the accident with back, neck, arm, and chest pain. fortunately, i did not have any broken bones or serious injuries. i still have some aches and pains but am very blessed to be uninjured. although i was fortunate to be physically healthy, i felt it was necessary to report this incident. i am a 24 year old active/healthy adult. if it were an inactive adult, an elderly person, or if a child were in the passenger seat, the outcome would not have been as fortunate. i needed to report this incident for others who had purchased the 2012 hyundai elantra. i know previous reports have been made regarding this make/model and the airbags and i felt like it is my duty to report my situation. *tr

I bought a brand new 2012 hyundai elantra on feb. 10, 2012. within several weeks i noticed the gas disappearing so quickly so i began filling the tank and taking pictures. i bought this particular vehicle due to the fact it advertised 40 mi. gal on highway and 29 city. i took it to the dealership, i was told to fill car and reset trip and drive on highway. i did as they said on several occasions before going back. the trip continued to read 18 mph and approximately (as low as 10.9 and as high as 24.8 mpg) one of the mechanics (i guess he was a mechanic) took it for a ride, i waited; he was gone an hour. when he got back he said he drove 47 miles and got it to read 33 mpg in which he said he combined city and highway together. i have never got it to do that and i have been tracking it closely since i bought it. also, the steering wheel squeals, i told them; they said it is nothing. the brakes (alloyed wheels) squeal after it rains, they said it is nothing. i smelled something coming from cabin filter, they said it is a big job to take apart to see what the smell is and they said they believed it is a dead animal in which i would have to pay for, i told them to forget it. they told me even though i only had about 1000 mi. on car after 3 mo. went by they needed to change my oil so i had it changed. everything is documented. i hope someone can help me. thank you. Car lurched, engine shut off. car became uncontrollable and all the warning lights on the dash lit up. eventually managed to get to side of road where the transmission locked into place. electrical system was still functional but car was completely unresponsive. occurred again 800 miles later after "repair" both incidents nearly caused accidents. *tr

My car started to clunk and would loose drive train power this happened a 4 separate occasions while accelerating and after being completely warmed up. i brought the car to orlando hyundai and they called their main office and was told that there were 5 2012 elantras that had to have the transmissions replaced in the united states but they were not going to replace mine. they said they were going to do some further testing but in all likelihood i would be put back into my car with the problem not being solved. i think this is a safety hazard and hyundai is not taking this seriously and playing with peoples safety. *jb

This car has large blind spots caused by both the left and right front pillars. the positioning of the rear view mirror only makes the right blind spot larger as there is only the space from the bottom of the mirror to the right pillar to view outside of the car. as a result, i almost hit someone crossing the street from my right to my left. thankfully, i saw them in time to apply my brakes. this happens frequently with this car. and, at intersections where there is a four-way stop or, when i am entering the lane, i can often not see a car coming from either direction. i fully anticipate that this car will be involved in numerous accidents. the elantra driver will be at fault but no one will look to this "defect" in the car as the problem. *tr

My car began pulling strongly to the left at various speeds. i contacted the dealership and arranged to have them look at it. our dealership first suggested a roadforce balance and wheel alignment and wanted to charge us $250. since the car had recently been to them for service including tire balancing and rotation, i pushed back and refused this suggested remedy. i had read online how people were experiencing this "pulling" problem. it does make your arms tired fighting to stay on the road. i called the dealership management and informed them of the identical complaints i was finding online. to the manager and our salesman's credit, they made the service dept look harder. a thorough inspection found that the steering "toe" was not calibrated properly. it should have been at zero (0), but instead was at +1. the service department reset the toe back to zero. everything has been fine so far. Purchased elantra 3 days ago and noticed car pulling to left. on highway especially nearly went off road, veered into other lanes. must keep constant pressure on wheel wants to pull away if hand pressure releases. car at 200 miles went to dealer after 2 days, they acted surprised as if they never heard of it happening. dealership looked at car (2 hours) stated they centered the steering wheel? and did an alignment. during test drive later with mechanic car veered to left constantly and nearly went off the road several times when i let go of steering wheel. mechanic reported that car performed within standards. have filed complaint with hyundai, and with bernardi dealership. car is unsafe to drive! brand new just days old. requesting replacement of car since i have safety concerns about the vehicle. *tr

I believe that daytime running light are a great safety feature. the list of standard equipment on the window sticker shows "daytime running lights" (drl). i have found that the only way to have the drl on is to turn on the parking lights. the parking lights, light the parking lights and the tail lights. i had drl on a 2003 chevy s-10 and they only lighted the highbeam at a low voltage, with no other lights. they were on any time the car was running. hyundai cannot correct the problem. i have contacted the dealer and the hyundai website. they should not list the lighting system, they have, as "daytime running lights". i know this is a minor item but it sure does bug me. The hyundai elantra 2012 is equipped with front and rear seat warmers. the switch for the front seats resets to off when the car is turned off. the switch for the rear seats, however, remains in the on position. the next time the car is turned on, the rear seat warmers will be activated again until they are manually deactivated. a caveat in the hyundai manual states: "with the seat warmer switch in the on position, the heating system in the seat turns off and on automatically depending on the seat temperature." this safety feature is to prevent injury to someone using the seat. my concern is the potential hazard the rear seat warmers pose when they are not being used by a passenger and the driver is unaware they are activated. on cold winter days the rear seat warmers could be heating at maximum wattage every time the car is turned on, unbeknownst to the driver. with this being a seating area often used by children, i believe there is a high likelihood that these switches could be left in the on position frequently and for lengthy periods of time. this poses both a health risk, as well as, undue wear on the electrical system and rear seat components. *tr

Traveling on interstate, vehicle suddenly jerked (as if i hit something on the road) complete electrical failure. dash, radio, navigation, power steering went dead. a few seconds later power came back while vehicle was still rolling and was able to restart by depressing brake and "start/stop" button. a few minutes later while traveling at lower speed, the event repeated. this time power would not return. car was in motion and was able to roll to emergency shoulder. car was stuck in neutral so emergency brake engaged to prevent roll back. power gone, unable to roll down windows, activate sunroof, radio or anything requiring power. while call was being made to roadside assistance and after 10 minute wait on hold, dash illuminated power and car was able to be started with start/stop button. decision was made to leave interstate and take back roads to avoid fatality in event of repeat. failure experience 3 additional times. was able to video tape failure: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xn9bpq9fogm&list=fle9mkxppktqats9tx4zu9fq&feature=mh_lolz *tt

This incident happened the night i bought the vehicle. the vehicle will suddenly buck/jolt/jerk as if hitting a speed bump in a very jarring manner. this also happened during a test drive of a vehicle of the same type and color (i'm not sure if they sold me the one during the test drive.). i was informed that the vehicle which jolted in this manner was repaired and sold to another customer. i'm not sure if they were telling the truth or if they gave me the same vehicle. still, this is a serious defect that is potentially a big safety hazard. the salesman who sat next to me was also concerned when the incident occurred twice in the span of one 10 minute test drive. i bought a brand new vehicle not expecting this type of serious, internal issue. after some testing, i believe that this sudden buck will more likely occur after accelerating then decelerating. please investigate this issue. thank you. *tt

I have had two windshields cracks in a 6 week period of time. the diameter of the impact on the initial impact on 11/911 was the size of a pea and left a horizontal crack that was about 12". the second impact, on another brand new windshield, left an impact the size of a pin head and a crack 18" long. i believe these are defective windshields, i did not even hear the impact on the second windshield. by the time i saw the crack and parked my car the crack was almost 6" long. *tr

While pulling onto a city street away from a curb, the car lunged forward and would not continue to drive.i checked to see if the gear selector had jumped out of d to n. did not. tried to continue down the street, and the car did the same thing at different intervals. transmission would not shift properly out of 1st gear. rpm's and engine continued to operate, but transmission was continuing to grind, bang, jump and not shift. after coaxing the car to my residence, some three or four blocks away, i notified the 24 hour hyundai assistance line. being sunday, they could not help. no way to tow car to dealership. drove car to dealership at roughly 15 mph. car continued to balk and jump. dealer manager was contacted on monday morning. after checking with hyundai and a computer readout on auto, it was determined that it was a defective transmission. transmission was ordered and replaced. interesting to know if other customers have had same problem. may lead to a total recall of the 2011 and 2012 automatic transmissions on the hyundai elantra automobiles. investigation needs to be conducted!! *tr

Several months ago the car alarm went off for no apparent reason (the car was sitting in our garage and no one was attempting to steal it). when it went off it was very early in the morning...like 2 or 3 am. we tried everything we knew to try to shut it up...finally disconnecting the battery. we took it to our local hyundai dealer where we were later told that one of the many sensors had gone bad and they would order a replacement part. that seemed to take care of the problem initially...but a few months later the alarm went off again at 2 or 3 am for no apparent reason. we called the dealer and were told they had no available appointments for two weeks. we waited the two weeks while the car sat unused and disconnected from the battery and then brought it back to the dealer. this time they had the car for most of a week saying that they could not replicate the alarm discharging. we finally just picked up the defective car...and that very same day...again at 2 am, the alarm went off again. my husband tried everything he was told to try to shut it up...nothing worked. so, he went to again disconnect the battery...but the dealer had tightened the cables to the battery too tightly. after spending an hour and half a can of wd40 we were able to disconnect only the positive cable to the battery...and there it has sat for nearly a month...unused and disconnected. i contacted hyundai directly and they seem unable much advice other than “take it to another dealer or back to the same dealer and ask them to try again.” we would like to just get rid of this car but could not sell it in good faith with this current problem...so it is both unusable and not worth much as a trade in.

I am the second owner of the 2012 elantra with 85200 miles. i have had it for 1 1/2 years and now my son owns it (as of aug 2017, making him the third owner. he lives with me). the oil has been changed as required. the ticking sound the engine made since we got the car has been steadily increasing in sound, and of recent, it is the worst it has been. i sell cars full time (our dealership owns 2 hyundai stores), and i also own another 2013 elantra that i drive presently. our service dept took apart the engine (on the 2012) to find metal shavings which led to the diagnosis that i need a new engine. my son is 2000 miles out of his extended warranty, and hyundai, nor the warranty company is eager to fix it. i was told by our service dept that in the last month and a half, 5 elantras came in with the same problem needing new engines and hyundai wouldn't replace. hyundai states they are not going to do a recall, even though this is becoming a bigger and bigger universal problem with elantra owners. the ticking is loudest when running cold, and/or in cold weather. (car is in ohio). metal shavings from the engine found in the oil is not a 'normal' issue. i am seeking recourse with hyundai to fix/replace my engine. the date stated on this form as to "when did this happen" is when i took it to my dealership at work to have it looked at. the ticking has been ongoing since i purchased the vehicle, but never as loud as it has become. my son has had the car at college, but i keep track of it needing oil changes and have documentation.

Airbag light came on at 197,000 miles. the vehicle was not in any type of accident where the airbag deployed.
