2012 FORD Explorer

Power steering was shutting off at start-up. Dealership replaced steering gear due to recall. Power steering was shutting off again in June 2018, dealership and Ford states it is no longer under warranty although it was replaced due to recall and do not want to repair for free.

Rotten egg/sulfur smell entering cabin of vehicle when engine is labored as a result of going up a hill or entering from a on ramp and the RPM\'s increase. Notice more when AC unit is on in summer months.

Ever since i purchased my car in August 2015 I have smelled fumes entering my car when i accelerate quickly to go up hill or pass someone. I have two young daughters under 2 years old that can\'t tell me if they feel funny from this smell. Purge valve sensor replaced due to engine light repeatedly coming on. No repairs on the fumes.

The odor is nausesting. I travel extensively and the fact I can\'t use my AC with my windows closed is infuriating.
The battery operated CO detector I put in the truck sounds at least once per trip if I forget to open the windows while running the AC.

I am experiencing strong exhaust fumes in the cabin of my vehicle when the vehicle is Exceller rated or pills or when merging into traffic. My family and myself have both experienced headaches and lightheadedness when smelling the fumes.

My 2012 Ford Explorer 4×4 Limited displayed the message \"Power Steering Assist Fault\" and steering became extremely heavy. This message has appeared several times with the heavy steering in the past few weeks but will resolve after a restart. But on 04/21/17 this same message appeared and would not fix with the restart. The Ex was towed to Serramonte Ford service center in Colma, CA. After several days of diagnostics by the mechanic, still no clue as how to resolve the issue.

Rust Bubbles on hood. Ford will not do anything

Paint on edge of hood is bubbling from a well known defect in Ford painting of aluminum parts. This is a very old problem with Ford paint systems that they are aware of and are not notifying customers about. How has a class action suit out been ruled on yet in this case?? I am just in the process of opening a case with Ford. They had better do the right thing!

Paint on hood is blistering and bubbling – this issue is known to Ford – who issued a TSB back in 2004 (Reference Numbers 04-25-1 Aluminium Corrosion) for older models of Ford 2000 – 2004 – this issue is known to Ford the hood is manufactured from Aluminium and the paint blistering is caused by galvanic corrosion and contamination. Why is this still happening on later models – I do not expect a 3 year old vehicle to rust or bubble the paint.

Paint bubbling on hood caused by aluminum hood oxidizing. Was told by Ford auto shop known problem with explorers and a couple other Ford models.

Ford recently declined to repair the bubbling paint on the hood of my 2012 Ford Explorer on the basis it is out-of-warranty due to mileage. Based on my research, Ford has had corrosion issues for some time but has failed to correct the issue.

Air condition: When sitting for several hours in the sun and the recycled air is left on, upon starting the car a mildew smell is emitted for the first 15 seconds. Exhaust (this is a brief statement of the past two months): when under hard acceleration, getting onto the interstate, or going from 20mph to 60mph — approximately 20 seconds after you let off the gas a burning smell fills the cabin. This smell is worse when the rear air and recycled are on. I have found out through Ford that there are “gills” located in the rear bumper to help displace air when the doors are closed. These gills are not spring loaded (they just lie there) and under hard acceleration (or when the SUV is under stress — ie, pulling a heavy load or climbing a mountain) the gills lift and emit/suck exhaust fumes into the car. A Ford Service Specialist has worked on the car four times and I have been told they could not duplicate the smell but when I drive it and when I drove other 2012 and 2011 explorers there is the same smell. After driving with me, the Ford specialist admitted there is a problem, but there is no fix and no one would guarantee me the SUV was safe. I personally took the car to my local HazMat fire station and within a 2-4 block radius (we made a circle) the carbon monoxide monitor went from 0 to 10ppm (11ppm is when the alarms go off). Ford then took the SUV to their fire station and brought in their own equipment and found that the emission was 6.6ppm. At this time I started Lemon Law paperwork, but Ford is offering to buy the car back. At this level of carbon monoxide, people driving the car for long distances could fall asleep and wreck, newly pregnant mom’s could have birth defects, or worse could happen due to extended exposure to carbon monoxide. I am getting out, but not without a fight. There are others who need help, this SUV is dangerous and could progressively get worse. It is worth someone looking into this. I am told that there is no fix and that there is no answer on the horizon. I have worked with many people to make this work in my favor, but not everyone can do this on their own! While at work my rear lift gate window exploded. At first site I thought it was vandalism but nothing (car chargers/CD’s/ road side kit etc) was taken. After further investigating, things just didn’t add up nor were consistent with the site of my destructed rear window and uplifting of the panel underneath the shattered glass (which was mostly on the ground as opposed to being inside my vehicle.)

Just purchased this car, decided to look up any recalls and found 1 pertaining to the toe links. looking throughly at the vehicle there are a lot of major defects. this is going to be a daily driver for my daughter and i and i truly don’t feel safe as i’m reading all the reviews and recalls. the only thing i can mention at this moment about this car would be the back washer fluid leaks into the cabin, the hood of the car does not shut correctly-handle for this area is loose. the state of this car is unknown.

I own a 2012 ford explorer. recently i received a warning on the dashboard indicating that there is a "power steering assist fault. " this happened while i was driving the vehicle with my family (lucky at a low speed). i am aware of a recall for this issue. in short, the recall covers 2011-2013 explorers and mandates that ford replace first the software for the steering rack assembly and if that does not rectify the problem then the entire steering rack assemble itself. i visited my local ford dealer who diagnosed the issue and stated that the entire steering rack assemble failed and needed to be replaced. they also informed me that my vehicle is not covered under the recall. my question is why? a known steering issue for 2012 explorers is clearly evident on my vehicle. seems ford is passing the blame for a known issue! i must note that there are only 45,000 miles on this vehicle and for this to fail with so few miles (while i was driving) is unacceptable. it is unclear to me why ford would not cover this under the recall especially since it is a major safety issue. nhtsa campaign number: 14v286000 *tr

Persistent exhaust odor in vehicle upon start up . when the vehicle cranks up and with a/c on there is a strong exhaust odor , it isn’t as noticeable at highway speeds but still there . this issue started a couple weeks ago and hasn’t went away

As i was pulling out of a parking lot onto a city street the power steering alert came on and i lost power steering. the car was very difficult to steer and i barely managed to stay on the road. turning was the difficult part. i parked the car and shut off the engine. when i started the car again the power steering had returned.

2/17/21 my airbag light came on... but when i looked for a recall or what to do it says i don’t have a recall....

Drove about 2 miles in the morning while turning onto the interstate ramp the steering locked up would not go over 30mph, suv started to smoke while the temperature gauge never changed inside of the vehicle. lucky to not have caused a major accident. after having vehicle towed, per the mechanic the computer system is fried, motor valves melted, and all spark plugs need to be replaced. this suv is only a 2012 and should not have this major of problems when it has been well taken care of. ford really needs to look further into this so this does not happen to someone else.

While driving the vehicle suddenly power would be lost. when applying more pressure to the accelerator, no usable power was present and the vehicle could not exceed 30 mph. after this occurred on the 4th time on a subsequent day, the "engine" symbol was displayed. currently the vehicle is at a ford dealership to troubleshoot the problem. on two occasions this discrepancy with acceleration and functionality of available power nearly caused an accident with small children in the vehicle. this should cause a major concern to other owners and ford motor company as a whole due to the potential damage, injury, or death that could occur due to completely losing acceleration and/or power while driving. *tr

Takata recall i purchased this vehicle in january 2016, on october 22, 2016 while driving in elberton georgia my car alerted me that the power steering needed to be serviced. about 2 miles down the road my turn signal wouldn't stay on when being used to turn. a few hours later when ready to head home i could not get my car to steer without major effort on my part. i am a mother of 3 and i refuse to put my kids in an unsafe vehicle. the issue has to do with the power steering control module and i was informed by ford that they would not fix the issue at no charge because the recall 14s06 has expired and i had exceeded the mileage warranty by almost 3000 miles. i don't feel that i am responsible for the charges to get this issue fixed being as i was not aware of the recall. i'm not happy that i'm expected to cover charges on something i wasn't aware was a problem with my vehicle until the service alert appeared. this is my 1st ford vehicle and i absolutely love it, however, if this is the customer service that i am going to receive i will not ever buy another ford vehicle and i will not recommend anyone to purchase from ford. i have been without a vehicle for 2 days as of right now, which makes it very difficult to get my kids to daycare/school and get to work. my husband has had to ask about changing his schedule in order to help me since i don't have a vehicle. sincerely, unhappy mother of 3 *tr

My air bag light is on and won't turn. what i have read is once it on the airbags will not deploy i'm case of an accident. ford know about this problem and is not trying to fix this is very unacceptable for such an expensive vehicle.

While driving down the highway at 70 mph, the passenger side windshield flew off. upon stopping and inspecting, the plastic slips that held it in place were broken. i checked the driver side, and the clips are starting to break on there as well, it is no longer attached at the top and it is only a matter of time that fails completely as well. i have attached pictures showing the passenger side that flew off and the driver side that is failing. *tr

My 2012 ford explore ltd. stops in the middle of the road while driving. a wrench light comes on in lower left dash, and the car loses power. i can no longer once this happens. i must turn off the car and restart the engine to get it going again. this has happened on a highway going 70 miles per hour, and in the middle of intersections, on regular city, suburban or neighborhood streets, not to mention it is now happening 2-3 times a day while with no warning. it happens while driving only, sometimes after turning, sometimes not, but the car is always in motion at the time, at various speeds in various temperatures, with climate control either off or on, seems to have no bearing. this is extremely dangerous and can easily cause an accident, injury or death. apparently the current recall for the power steering does not address this. i am having that worked on right now as i type. this happened once last year on the highway, and once about 6 months ago as i pulled out of a parking lot. hadn't happened again since until the month of october in the 80 degree weather of plano tx, whether car was already warmed-up or not. *tr

Vehicle has been driving perfectly fine and out of no where it shows 2 warnings. one indicting to service power steering, and the other indictating to service advance trac system. the steering fluid is full and there are no damaged to the hose or power steering system. this is showing the same signs of the recalled explorers yet this one has not been recalled.

Strong exhaust (burning oil smell) coming into cabin under medium to high acceleration through ventilation ( ac on) . the smell permeates the car and burns your nostrils. i could smell it for quite some time even after existing the vehicle (as the smell remains in my nose). even felt a bit lightheaded after existing the vehicle. i have had passengers notice this smell on several occasions also.

The aluminum hood cause galvanic corrosion and rust bubbles formed on the front of the hood. these bubbles started to peel and ford refuses to do anything about their design flaw.

I have had the car for 2 years and have had at least 10+ incidents of my car losing all power for acceleration. it has happened on the highway going 65+, it has happened accelerating onto the high way, it has happened on residential streets, it has happened on state highways, it has happened in parking lots. the car suddenly revs super high but pressing the accelerator does absolutely nothing. i have to limp to the side of the road, turn the car off and usually it fixes the issue. but several times i have had to turn it off and restart several times before i have normal control of the car again. i have brought it in several times and every time they tell me unless it is happening at that moment they can't figure out the problem. i have kids in my car most of the time and to suddenly lose power is a tragedy waiting to happen. today during a routine oil check, it was discovered my ptu is leaking. in a 5 year old car i would not expect this to be the case.

Turbo gone bad - car began making loud rattle noise when started. noise would subside some after a few minutes. car has been very slow to accelerate, whenever it's being driven, over the last few months. have to really press down all the way on the gas in order to keep it going. the mpg have been steadily declining as well over the last few months. dealer told me it's a "turbo problem". was told that 180 other 2012 explorers are also affected, parts on back-order for six weeks. can't drive car. repair cost approximately $3500. ford offering no relief at this point.

I am experiencing the exhaust fumes smell in my vehicle when accelerating up hills or when merging into traffic. my family has suffered symptoms such as headaches and lightheadedness due to the smells. the smell is a very strong exhaust fumes smell and lasts for at least 30 seconds to a minute.

2012 ford explorer releases strong burnt rubber smell when i accelerate or reach 3000 rpms. it is getting worse the more miles i put on my car. causes myself and my 2 children to feel car sick or have headaches. the only way i can get the smell to go away is to turn off the a/c or heat and roll the windows down. i have mentioned it to local dealership twice now and they have no idea what is causing it but i've told them about the class action lawsuit and they still act like they have never heard of it. the first time i took it to the dealership for the smell the car was also making a noise when the a/c was on so i was told that the repair they did would fix whatever was causing the noise and the smell. i just took it back to the dealership today for an oil change and once again mentioned the smell and they said they have no idea about a burning smell and nobody has had that issue that they know of. now that i know it is legitimately a concern and my kids and i aren't just actually getting "car sick" i am extremely upset that i'm not being taken seriously. i am supposed to take the car back to the dealership monday to have other issues fixed and i can't wait to see what they tell me now that i have made them aware of the legitimate problem with the exhaust odor.

Turbo failure while driving, large loss of power and potential for an accident. turbo charger failed on my 2.0l ecoboost engine at 58,000 miles. turbo failed while in traffic and caused very poor performance and could have easily caused a wreck. turbo failure does not create a check engine light or give any indication that is has failed other than a large loss of power and the engine continues to run. turbo failure is sudden and there is no indications prior to it failing. the turbo was not covered by warranty due to vehicles age even though under 60k.

I abruptly accelerated around a car that maneuvered infront of me and my interior cabin was filled with an nauseating exhaust smell. i got a headache, light headed, and pulled over, because i was starting to get dizzy and develop headaches. this occurred on a highway, and nearly killed me. i am furious.

Our 2012 ford explorer has a heavy fuel smell in the cabin after driving for more that a few minutes. it seems to be getting worse as time passes.

Power steering assist fault show up and the steering wheel is very hard to move. i start and turned off a couple times nothing happens. this is my second time this happen. the first time start working again but now have 2 weeks in may garage without be able of move the car.

When the shifter is mechanically and securely in park, the vehicle's sensor system does not recognize it is in park. this leads to starting issues nbecasue of two factors: 1. the battery wears down since the car does not completely shut down and 2. starting the vehicle requires it to be in park which the veichile does not recognize it is in.

There is a leak somewhere around the rear window/ door or top. everytime it rains, water enters the car pouring down the 3rd row seatbelt. this has happened multiple times.

Immediately after ignition is turned on, power steering failure light comes on and steering wheel can barely turn. turn off ignition and back on again and it is gone. this has happened 5 times in the last 2 months.

The strut mounts on the explorer are faulty. resulting in a horrible noise when turning or encountering a bump; and possible separation of the strut mount from the vehicle body. i was alerted that in my small community alone, i was one of 5 vehicles of the same year, make and model who have had to replace both strut mounts on the vehicle within the past 6 months. ford has been alerted to the problem, but seem to take no action in resolving it.

Front strut bearings clunking/ failed. needed replaced. 55,000 miles. strong odor of carbon monoxide when accelerating or following large trucks.

Smells exhaust in the cabin. i have been getting head aches and nausea when i drive. vehicle in motion and after being in the car i get an exhaust smell and get sick.

The driver's side windshield trim blew off the car while traveling approximately 70 mph on an interstate creating a dangerous projectile for vehicles behind me.

There's been a smell each time i would go in my truck and it would give me a headache. during this time i was pregnant. i recently found out that it's been the exhaust fumes entering the vehicle. i have not been using my truck and i can't drive my 1 month old baby in this car. this has not been the only problem with the truck it has been shaking and shuts off. i've already taken it to get repaired but it still shakes. i'm concerned about the fumes coming into the car. it definitely idn't safe for me to have my baby ride in. i can't believe i used this truck during my pregnancy thinking it was just me but seeing it on the news made me realize something has been wrong with the truck the whole time.

I placed a carbon monoxide detector in my vehicle after reading about issues. it has been going off due to high levels of co detected inside my car. the detector only stops beeping when i open all of the windows and turn off the air conditioner. i use a kidde co detector that will alarm if levels are above 30ppm. i have small children in the car most of the time, and i want a recall on this issue to get it fixed and prevent issues with their health or an accident that can endanger both my family and others, as well as fix all explorers with the same issue. the detector goes off when the windows are closed and the air conditioner is on, and when i accelerate.

My ford explorer 2012 has been getting exhaust fumes inside car ever since i bought the car new. i have taken the car back to dealer a couple of times and all i get is a run around. thus issue needs to be addressed before some one dies from the fumes.

Exhaust fumes in cabin. on a couple of occasions, an odor similar to a rotten egg smell has entered the cabin area while driving. not quite sure at this time if i was accelerating or if the ac was on the recirculation/fresh air mode when the smell entered. i am concerned about co2 exposure to my family.

The co detector i installed (battery operated) sounds if i close my windows for more than a few moments during a trip. my 10 year old son can not ride in my truck as he has vomited several times during trips in the past. the idea that the vehicle i drive is poisoning my son infuriates me. the exhaust odor is unbearable, coupled with the nausea and headaches that result from the co leaks i find myself more and more angry that we spent $30k on a death trap

In 2015, ford charged me more than $700 to make the repairs necessary to eliminate exhaust fumes in the car. they had a known fix at that time, but still charged me for the repair.

For about the last year, i would smell something burning inside my vehicle when entering the freeway. i was never able to identify the source of the smell, even after repeatedly stopping to sniff the engine compartment and around the tires and exhaust. i could not detect the smell outside of the car, nor did i find any evidence of anything burning (no smoke, charred areas, stuck brakes, melted rubber, etc). there didn't appear to be any pattern, as i would smell something burning at different points in my commute, with the only time i consistently experienced it being merging onto the freeway. on june 20, 2016 at 1:38 pm central time, i sent my husband the following text: "is the fire extinguisher still in the car?" due to the overpowering smell of smoke in the passenger compartment shortly after getting on the freeway. i rolled down the windows and exited the freeway, stopping at the far end of a parking lot. there was no smoke nor odor emanating from the exterior of the vehicle. due to the heat, we drive with the air recirculating most of the year. much of our driving is in the city, with light acceleration. typically, the only time we rapidly accelerate is when entering the freeway. on this occasion, i accelerated more than normal due to a semi's position in the right lane. at times, my 7 year old has complained about not being able to breathe with the windows rolled up.

Exhaust leaking into passenger cabin on acceleration, normal highway speed and when a/c is on. strong smell of exhaust daily. purchased battery powered co detector and it has gone off several times in the cabin of the vehicle. we have taken the car to the ford dealer in cumming , ga several times, but each time have been told there are no issues. it is my daily driver and i have been diagnosed with several health problems since purchasing this car. my husband suffers headaches when he drives it. we noticed the problem a few days after the purchase of the 2012 model in september of 2011. we have still not been able to get a resolution.

While driving on trip, the calipers seized, the brakes almost caught fire. the caliper and rotor both had to be replaced with only 51,000 miles. also, the rear brake pads and rotors were also replaced at 27,500 miles.

Vehicle has 66,000 miles. the service power steering now and advancetrac warning lights came on saturday evening (9/10/16). vehicle drove with no issues that evening. sunday morning (9/11/16) the same indicator lights came on and the power steering did not work. checked for leaks, fuses, etc. and no apparent issues. as dealerships were closed on sunday, autozone ran diagnostics and showed zero error codes, even with warning lights on. this vehicle is not covered under the existing 2012 ford explorer recall regarding the same issue that seems to be occurring in the same year, make and model of car.

Exhaust smell in cabin after acceleration, for example during attempts to pass on highway, etc. sometimes referred to as "rotten egg smell". smell is definitely getting in to cabin. dissipates after several minutes. have been experiencing neurological problems for about 6 months now (random, constant muscle fasciculations throughout body, strange headaches and heat-related sensations, etc), trying to work with doctors to figure out if symptoms are related to vehicle and the smell. the smell is well-documented on the popular ford explorer forums online, and happens usually under hard acceleration or highway speeds.

Air bag connector corrosion. multiple connectors. has happened every year since i purchased the vehicle in oct, 2012. it has been in for repair multiple times yearly. has to go back again due to inspection due. this happens whether the vehicle is moving, stationary or parked.

Awd off error and wrench symbol - issue has occurred multiple times, under different conditions. without warning, the vehicle loses acceleration and the wrench icon and awd errors display. the throttle becomes unresponsive, but all other systems remain functioning. if you leave it in gear without the brakes engaged, it will move at idle speed on flat ground, but is unable to navigate inclines. when slowing to a stop, the whole vehicle shudders. stopping and restarting normally returns the vehicle to normal operation. this has accured over a dozen times. dealer has said that there are no codes reporting the problem. recommended we replace tires. replaced tires and issue is still present. have filed a complaint with ford to bring in other resources to triage/diagnose issue without success. this is a very dangerous issue as when to issue presents itself, the car stops unexpectedly and must be shifted into park in order to clear the problem. on roads without shoulders or multiple lanes, this is a very dangerous as the car is sometimes not able to make it to the side of the road and must be put into park where it stops. the car is to dangerous to drive and there are no know fixes right now.

I/we have had multiple occasions of the engine failure to accelerate while in a regular driving mode. the engine will not continue to respond to the accelerator. the vehicle was driven to the local ford dealer and they were unable to duplicate the problem. today i was able to pull a code p2111 and took that in. i was told it was a malfunctioning throttle body. this appears to be a problem that is occurring in this and similar vehicles. ford has said they will not correct the problem. the vehicle was being driven on a local road at the time of the condition occurred. we pulled into a parking lot to get it off the street. after pulling the code the vehicle still would not respond to acceleration attempts. the vehicle was turned off and restarted. upon restart it ran correctly.

Since day one of ownership i signaled to the service department that i smell fumes in the car while using climate on heat or cold. they tested and said all is ok. after 1 year it still happens every time i use climate, sometimes more obvious than other times. no smoke enters the cabin, just a heavy odor. i always have to open the window to be able to stay in the car. worried about long term effects on my family and our future baby. called ford even today to ask if they have any documentation on this problem..said no.

Paint "bubbling" has taken place on the lift gate in the vicinity of the lift gate handle. the bubbling has enlarged significantly since i first discovered it in december of 2016. no accident. normal operation and use by a private individual

Upon heavy acceleration (merging, passing a vehicle,etc.) exhaust fumes are detected in the vehicle. irrelevent as to whether heat, ac or vent is open.

We have noticed intermittent odors in the cabin. sulphur smelling odor after accelerating quickly (for example passing, merging). it happens when the heat is on, or off. it has happened intermittently for as long as we can recall however the smell is now (approx. the last year) noticeable just about any time we do highway driving. it almost exclusively happens on the highway. on the infrequent occasion that i need to make a quick acceleration while doing around-town driving, the smell can be noticed. i am currently receiving medical attention for severe symptoms of, what i believe to be, carbon monoxide exposure. symptoms include extreme fatigue and headaches.

Leaking exhaust i have been tested and have high levels of carbon dioxide in my blood i now have a battery operated carbon dioxide tester in my vehicle. i pray this protects me. i was so fatigued last summer, i went straight to bed after work. now i finally know why!

My vehicles air turns on on it's own as you drive. this is not the ac nor heater. as you drive you can hear your air vents turn on and you smell a foul smell and the air pushing through the vents is muggy sticky air that makes your skin feel clammy. this has been reported to the dealership before and had been "repaired" however, the air continues to push through the vents whether you have the switch set to on or not.

I was driving and for no obvious medical reason passed out and my car traveled across a highway and off the highway and hit 2 trees. i have read a news report of this happening to other drivers with this make and model of my card.

My 2012 ford explorer would all of a sudden sound like it was slipping out of gear while driving. i would lose all control of the accelerator & vehicle would idle very rough. the "wrench" light would appear on the dash display. i would have to drift over to the side of the road, turn the vehicle off, & then re-start the vehicle. this happened without warning & became more frequent. dealership replaced the throttle body (at my cost) & explained no recall had been determined yet, but expected it to be issued in the future due to the number of complaints. i also had to pay to have my selector lever assembly replaced again since i was again having the issue of vehicle problem of "shift to park" appearing once again. the first time this part was replaced it was covered under tsb 15-0047, but this time it was at my expense.

I have the similar problem with my exhaust system. although, no check light is on, when my car is idling or earlier today when i was just driving for awhile with the heat on, i spell a strong exhaust smell in the car.

The airbag light stays on continuously despite being checked. i see that this is a known problem with the airbag but no recall has been issued. i don't have anything under my seat to affect the units being unplugged

I purchased my explorer in october 2011. i have been suffering with bouts of nausea, vomiting, dizziness, weakness and general instability since august 2013. i have been under several doctors care with little improvement in my condition. most recently i have been diagnosed with vestibular proxsysmia. my major concern is that these symptoms could well have been caused by persistent carbon monixide exposure. i will be pursuing this possibility with the medical professionals involved with my case. i just recently traded in this vehicle for a ford escape so no longer own it.

The power steering, four wheel drive, and traction control completely stopped working even after i had it towed to the dealership some months back to fix this problem! also,the myford touch goes black and will not work for weeks. when the power steering quit i was on a paved side road near my home.

There is a strong smell of carbon monoxide when the engine is reved over 3000 -3500 rpm this happens every single time. it seems to be on par with the other complaints regarding this issue with the exhaust system. i noticed this issue since i bought the car from the used car lot.

The power steering assist warning came on and i lost power steering. this issue was a recall issue with ford. t took the vehicle to sanderson ford and they contacted ford special service support center regarding the recall and warranty on the vehicle for recall. ford did not approve the repair stating the vehicle was 13000 miles over the allotted mileage. really??? following are the exact comments from dealer to ford and ford to dealer taken from copies of their communication: dealer comment: november 23, 2020-request ford agent: if safety program 14s06 is closed and steering gear is required the vehicle must fall within the 10 yr/150,000 miles to be eligible for this repair. nov 24, 2020-dealer-14s06 looks to be still open to myself and the technician please clarify ford agent- 14s06 is closed on oasis thank you. ford agent- not approved. please be advised this is not approved. if 14s06 was open we could approve it but because 14s06 is closed and veh is over the fsa guidelines for 15n01 then we cannot approve. 14s06 was closed back in 08/07/2014. dealer response: my apologies. just.trying to do my due diligence for the customer. 15no1 is still open. which then refers to 14s06 for explorer. the steering gear was not replaced when the 14s06 was claimed years ago. only the reprogram was performed. 14s06 has a supplement which is copied and pasted as follows: subject demonstration/ delivery hold-safety recall 14s06-supplement #3 certain 2011-2013 model year explorer vehicles reprogram power steering control module and steering gear extended coverage why did i not receive the coverage? i don’t have enough letters allowed to continue the quote. but the supplement says if denied the steering gear assembly cause veh had exceeded the original recall i should get a refund. ford has had this safety issue for a long time. my cost was $2,100.

The rear brake calipers were not releasing properly after application of the brakes. this led to accelerated wear of the brake pads, overheating of the pads and rotors, and ultimately, non-repairable damage to the rotors. we believe this is a safety issue related to a design flaw that could lead to brake failure, or overheating to the point of creating a fire or explosion hazard.

Fumes entering the cabin making the passengers nauseous and resulting in headaches. we noticed that only when we are in my husband's car that my children and i become sick with headaches and nausea. my husband drives to work in this vehicle and usually arrives to work with a headache. he didn't realize that the car was making him sick. he trusted the service people when they told him the car was fine. he typically dives on highways. the fumes are coming through the vents.

Vehicle has an illuminated airbag service light supposedly due to a malfunction in to electrical connections of the airbag system or a faulty drivers seatbelt tensioner. apparently this will result in the airbag not deploying during a crash. ford dealers have serviced other parties explorer's with the issue by checking electrical connections and adding dielectric grease or by replacing the driver's seatbelt tensioner. this repairs usually result in upwards on 5 hours of labor plus parts which the owners were charged. these fixes are only temporary as the problem typically returns. this is a safety issue resulting from poor manufacturing or installation of parts and numerous explorers manufactured between 2012 and 2016 are experiencing it. owners should not be charged for the incompetence of manufacturing processes or lack of planning especially when the problem is safety related.

About a year ago i bought 2012 ford explorer xlt with a 2.0 four cylinder eco boost engine from a dealer in akron ohio. i live in rochester, ny. during the first winter months i had the car, when i had the heat on i noticed a strong exhaust smell in the cabin. at first i thought i was crazy because the car was in such great shape, but the more passengers would say the same thing i started to realize it was a real issue. i did some searching online and see that other people have the same issue. when i have the heat on and i put the circulation in recycle mode, it seems to subside the problem a little, but then the recycle mode shuts off and goes into fresh air mode automatically again i get blasted again with these horrible fumes. this happens about every 5 minutes while i am driving and i have to keep hitting recycle and opening up the windows while i am driving to air out the fumes. when i am moving at 50 or more it does not seem to be an issue, i don't know why, but when i come to a stop it is bad, exhaust fumes spew into the cabin. i get headaches all the time while driving. i am afraid to take my kids in the car because of this issue. if i start the car first thing in the morning and i forgot to turn the heat off the night before, the heater kicks in when i start it and it is bad. this morning it snowed here in rochester so i went out and started the car and let it warm up for 5 minutes, when i came out it smelled so bad i couldn't even get in. i had to rolls down the windows and let it air out, and even then when i came to work today i have had a headache all day and i smell like an exhaust stack. please help me. i love the car, except for the fumes issue.

For all three rear seat belts the latch plate will not engage in the seat belt buckle. the rear seats are rarely used so i don’t know how long they have been inoperative.

Recall 14s06/15n01 performed in 2016 for failed steering. complete steering rack replaced. 4 years later the steering completely failed again while my wife was driving. luckily i was with. vehicle is impossible for her to steer when it failed. i was able to take over and get the vehicle home. takes all the strength you need to turn. took it to ford dealership. ford refuses to replace the failed steering rack again that was replaced under a safety recall. ford also refuses to help with any financial support for the $3000 repair. in review of 14s06 and 15n01 there have been multiple supplements with extended coverage but only 1 time replacement. thus they are recusing themselves of liability should a crash have occurred. the safety recall solution is simply a continuation of a major safety issue they do not stand behind. i'm grateful my wife and kids were not alone or in an accident. others may no be so lucky and ford needs to be held responsible for their solution. 8 year old vehicle. steering has failed every 4 years since new. recall means nothing, people will get hurt.

Power steering assist fault, my steering was intermittent but now its completely gone. i can not steer my car. it was stationary , it happened as soon as i started my car.

I was driving on highway today at 70mph and all of a sudden i heard a slapping noise on passenger side the rubber molding from winshield came loose and was hitting passenger window. after stopping at next exit i was able to push it back into trim piece but the trim piece is a little loose.

I own a 2012 ford explorer. recently i received a warning on the dashboard indicting that there is a “power steering assist fault”. this happened while i was driving the vehicle with my family (lucky at a low speed). i am aware of a recall for this issue. in short, the recall covers 2011-2013 explorers and mandates that ford replace first the software for the steering rack assembly and if that does not rectify the problem then the entire steering rack assemble itself. i visited my local ford dealer who diagnosed the issue and stated that the entire steering rack assemble failed and needed to be replaced. they also informed me that my vehicle is not covered under the recall. my question is why? a known steering issue for 2012 explorers is clearly evident on my vehicle. seems ford is passing the blame for a known issue! i must note that there are only 45,000 miles on this vehicle and for this to fail with so few miles (while i was driving) is unacceptable. it is unclear to me why ford would not cover this under the recall especially since it is a major safety issue. nhtsa campaign number: 14v286000

Water is leaking from the roof that causes electrical issues. bad design by ford in which seal seams not properly installed, which cause leaks inside vehicle.

The power electric power steering assist, the power steering, my blinkers, all went out when my gear box did. for the second time. ford has recalls on these parts but not for my vin number.

While driving on the expressway, down a straight stretch of road the molding on my driver's side window trim flew off. there were no cracks or damage to it prior to this happening. after i leaving my destination, the sticky rubber underneath came loose, flapping against my windshield and driver side window until it flew off, hitting the car behind me. i was also on the expressway doing around 75 mph when this incident occurred. *tr

My wife and kids were driving our 2012 ford explorer on the highway when the dashboard gave a notice of "service power steering" and "service advancetrac". the suv instantly lost all power steering and my wife had to muscle the vehicle off the highway. after taking some time to look int what could be the cause i ended up having it taken to the germain ford of beavercreek. upon diagnoses they stated that the electric power steering gear had become faulty. i asked if this was covered under the 'field action notice' or the recall that were available for this issue that i have seen all over the internet. it was explained that due to being 9,900 miles over the warranty of the field action notice they would not cover it, even after a asking through a provisional request to ford. i called ford customer service and was advised that this suv had the initial recall on the electric power steering back in 2014 and that this field action notice is a follow-up coverage for that. i stated that this fix must still have issues and was advised that ford has the thought that if something was wrong i would have brought it in before the 150k/10 yr mark. i stated we didn't know anything was wrong until now.

My power steering and power assist went out for a second time after being replaced under a recall making it hard to steer and tearing up other parts in my vehicle. i was told by a ford dealership that the recall was only good to be replaced once and i would have to pay for it a second time. *tr

Vehicle overheated without warning leaving me stranded on a deserted highway. after speaking with a mechanic and having them come to the vehicles location and performing a visual inspection he stated antifreeze was leaking from the water pump. the vehicle was taken to a local ford dealer and upon completing a diagnostic check they confirmed the “internal” water pump had failed without warning. i was contacted 5 times by the dealership and each time the news got worse. then final call the advisor told me to fix it and nothing was going to be guaranteed to last it was going to cost approximately $4,000 before taxes. they’d also have to change the oil twice along with the spark plugs. the vehicle had just been at a local ford dealership for maintenance and to fix outstanding recalls and after checking the service manual nothing is “suggested” “recommended” or “required” to service the internal water pump.

The front strut tower mounts are bad. this is on every 2011-2015 ford explorer i have seen. it makes a bad clunk sound everytime the wheel is turned.

Power steering assist fault, first appeared january 9th 2020 - purchased vehicle with around 146,000 miles on 4/2019 - we are the second owners, first owner bought new and had detailed maintenance records - never had recall work done from 2014 regarding this issue. took to paul miller ford, lexington, ky - stated ford should have to fix - but they won't because it is over 150,000 miles. power steering assist fault light came back on feb 7, 2020 - and still remains on and un-driveable. ford refuses to fix the issue, and i'm not the only one. there are several of us on forums being told the same thing. i do not believe the previous recall fixed them all - they only contacted ones that were manufactured out of chicago - with this many still having problems, there has to be problems with all models during this time-frame, regardless of where they were manufactured. this is a safety issue and should be addressed and ford should be held accountable. had i known about this issue - i would not have bought the vehicle.

I have coolant leaking, i took it to a shop to be diagnosed and was told that it would cost over $2,000 since the water pump is in the front of the engine, there is only 132,000 miles on my car and i shouldn’t be having this issue!!

Airbag light has been on for a week now. took it in to the ford dealership to find out the wiring is malfunctioning. according to the dealership it is a common issue with 2012 models. i was told that since the airbag light is on, if i got into an accident the air bags will not deploy. this is a major safety concern. now i am having to pay upward of $400 to repair.

When engine is started, the airbag lights go off but come back on and stays on. this started a month ago and the warning light still switches on when the car is started

Steering system failure appeared in my car and i could no longer move the steering as it got too hard for no reason, i don't even want to imagine what would have happened if i had driven on the highway with my family i think it is the defect of the ford for which ford should be responsible for solving this problem to prevent crashes

Electronic steering gear assembly was a recall and was replaced. replacement part has now gone bad once again. ford is not honoring the warranty it provided for this part. vehicle has no steering power now. went out while driving down the road. unable to turn left causing to go off the road. was able to correct and traveled to dealer to find out that the steering is gone.

07/25- had recall ordered- toe link on both sides, rear. performed at harrisonburg ford, va. ; 09/04 driving on route 33 in va, mountain road. heard grinding noise coming down mountain, noise steadily increased and began to feel like a loss of control. slowed down and a mile from shop the noise stopped. went to rice tire in va and had it checked. the bolt holding toe link on right side had dislodged nearly completely. had it replaced and told to go to ford to re torque both sides.; 09/05 went to ford. was informed that mechanic had hand torqued the bolts, essentially misread instructions. manager actually stated that they were going to have to call many other customers to re torque their toe links correctly as well. i asked for alignment as well, because this problem would surely affect balance and alignment, this was performed as well. they billed it to recall warranty dept.; 11/6 driving on 25 in colorado springs 65 mph, traffic stops and as i break heavily i lose control and vehicle hops a lane. no accident.; 11/07 take vehicle to ford to check toe links, was told both nuts were loose, left and right, the knuckle on one side has snapped the brakes are bad, rotors and back 2 tires are bad..i specifically asked , says that this is all related. the front brakes are worn as well, clearly from compensation of driving with bad toe links. i was told specifically yes this is all related. ford recall manufacturer refusing to cover toe links as well as all associated damage, totaling over $3k. i have never had any issues with vehicle and perform regular maint on tires brakes and rotars, etc. and within 3 months of recall i have had 2 life threatening incidents and complete ruination of my vehicle safety, and alot of damage incurred. receipt of recall on 11/25 stating everything related is green. no way this damage is not associated to "new, safer" toe links.

I bought my explorer in june 2019. after purchasing i noticed the smell of the exhaust inside the vehicle .throughout the summer months i drove with the windows down due to the a.c. not working properly . i continued smelling the exhaust but financially unable to seek repairs. with cooler temperatures the windows now closed the smell of the exhaust was more apparent and i begin to experience severe headaches, frequent nausea, fatigue and some dizziness and confusion. i was told of reports of carbon monoxide issues with this make of vehicle and spoke to ford about repairs as well as other recalls needed for my explorer. i took my car for the repairs today and am still experiencing the carbon monoxide issue still. i will be contacting the ford dealership tomorrow as this wasn't repaired. i'm concerned for my health and having this issue not fixed .

On 11-3-2019 at around 1820 hours while driving in the mountains, a yellow "service power steering soon" light illuminated. i acknowledged the warning and felt no change in handling at the time. i continued driving about another 10 minutes to my destination. as i turned into a driveway i could feel the steering get very tight and mentioned it to my passenger. i parked the car and returned about two and a half hours later. when i started the car at that time, a red "service power steering now" warning illuminated. i attempted to turn the steering wheel and was only able to do so with great effort. i drove the car about 100 ft and parked it for the night until i can get a tow truck for it. i will be contacting my local dealership, redlands ford, where i purchased the car originally.

Power steering recall of 2014- my vehicle was recalled for steering was fixed under a recall in 2014 the extended the warranty to 10 years of 150,000 miles. my vehicle keeps showing a power steering assist default. it has been to the dealer and they claim it is not saving a code so they can't do anything. what is gonna happen when it happens at 70 mph and me or one of my family members is killed. they need to honor their warranty and fix it. i can not drive it to dealer once ther steering fails and they tell me this is the only way they can fix it.

Since march 2019, i had been experiencing a slight stiffness in the power steering. by may, the traction sign came on then went off. when i asked the dealer about this, they said there was a 2-3 week wait to have the car looked at. it didn't happen often, but infrequently. then one day in late june, when i turned on the car and backed down the driveway, there was no power in the steering. i drove back up the driveway and turned off the car. then turned it back on and all was fine. in late july it happened again and early august it completely went out. i was able to get the car in at the dealership on a friday and they found it was the steering gear failed internally. they finished repairing the car by the following tuesday. when the car was at 141,000 miles i had asked if there were any recalls that haven't been done on this car. they said no. my questions is: does a safety recall expire?

While my was driving she went to accelerate from a stop and heard a noise. she thought maybe she ran over glass or something. when she went to turn the corner the vehicle kept going straight. she ended up hitting another vehicle due to the rear suspension breaking. my vehicle is part of the rear suspension recall.

The vehicle was started up and went to back out of a parking spot. the vehicle was practically impossible to steer. the steering was the worse ever to try to turn the wheel. had to pull into another parking spot and park it there. turn the car off. then came back a few hours later and started the car and the steering worked fine. this has happened on previous occasions when starting the vehicle. the steering is impossible to turn the wheel. again, this has happened to me before, but luckily only when starting up and initial driving. it has probably happened at least 4 times to me and at least 2 times for my wife. i have heard of other people's steering stop when driving!

My 2012 ford explorer leaks from the 3rd row seatbelt. it has ruined the carpet in the back and molded it. it also filled up the spare tire area with water and rusted the rim of the spare tire and the inside where the tire sits. i did not notice this until many months after i bought it because i wasn't using the 3rd row at the time.

Lost communication with the climate control system. the windows lock up, and the car blows constant heat through defrost. no hazards can be used as the entire control panel is out. very unsafe without hazards, let alone full blown heat when its already . 105 outside with the heat index.

When the vehicle is stationary and i turn on the vehicle it displays the following message "power steering assist fault" and the steering wheel locks and i am unable to move the vehicle until i turn it off and turn it back on at least 2 times. i am afraid if this fails while i am driving i could kill myself or someone else.

When it accelerate 0 to 60 it feels like trembles, even when it passes 60 mph it feels. if you active the over drive it feels iven more... i replace the tires, brakes , control arm, motor mount. the mechanic check everything. so the only rest for check is the rack and pinion the hall thing. the explorer is in very good condition

Power steering default activates which cause you to use extreme force to navigate the wheel and there is a popping noise in front of vehicle. all while driving and sitting still.

I have a 2012 ford explorer that was included in the safety recall 14s06. the pscm was reprogrammed prior to me purchasing the vehicle. associated to recall 14s06 is the extended coverage program 15n01, which is to remain open on the vehicles that were recalled in the event that any loss of steering assist dtcs are present. my explorer has a complete loss of power steering and the dealer has noted that my entire steering gear assembly must be replaced. ford refuses to acknowledge extended coverage 15n01. this coverage is supposed to last for 10 years and 150,000 miles. i am at 144,000 miles. ford continues to repeat that my car is not included in the special coverage. however, publications from ford indicate otherwise. replacement of my steering gear is $2,200. all of which should be covered by ford. my power steering and stabilitrak warnings go off and i lose power steering while driving. this is a safety issue that needs to be addressed correctly by ford. ford’s customer care department is severely incapable of answering the most basic questions. they are also incapable of accurately documenting what you have called about making it impossible to reach any resolution or provide information beyond what you research on your own. i requested escalation and was told that they don’t have bosses, won’t escalate my request for additional information or provide original recall notifications for my vin. i was told the only way to pursue the issue further was to write a letter.

For the past year while driving at highway speeds the steering wheel gets "stuck" in position and will not turn left or right to stay in your lane. i have to apply heavy pressure on the steering wheel to make it move again but afterwards it appears to drive normally except on the occasion when it does it multiple times in a 3-4 hour trip. i mentioned it to my ford dealership when in for other service but nothing was ever done about it and they denied a recall was open for the steering. fast forward to may, june, july and august 2019. on occasion when backing out of my garage, the steering wheel would lock up and i could not steer the vehicle without using excessive force. the steering wheel would then release and steer as normal. this happened more times than not so i started to wonder if it was the the brake pads and rotors sticking together because they were wet when the vehicle was parked but that theory quickly got shot down as it happened even in a long dry spell. today, sept 05, 2019 as my wife went to back out of the garage, the steering wheel was completely locked up and would not budge. normally i would rock the steering wheel left to right, back and forth and it would free up but not this time. after searching for remedies on the internet one person recommended to turn the vehicle off and wait a few minutes and then to start it up again. i did this and it worked! i also want to relay that at no time did i ever see a warning light on the dashboard while driving at highway speeds or when starting the vehicle after being parked in the garage. its possible that the steering may have been repaired in the past before i purchased the vehicle (used) as it does not show up in a recall by vin search. note: just started car again and the steering is locked again. took several restarts to free it up!

The steering locked on my 2012 ford explorer ltd. while driving down a city street. i could not turn the steering and had to coast off the road. had to call to have the vehicle towed. a notice on the car said check power steering. i seen where others have had similar problems with this vehicle, but i didn't see it as a recall item on your site.

Experiencing hard shifts with a thud. happens when the vehicle is slowing down then when i accelerat there is a delay then a thud when it finally shodts into gear. apparently i'm not the inly one from what ive heard. i wish ford would fix this issue. i have taken it to garage but they were unable to determine the issue.

I had a sync black screen the central processing unit and apim was no good so i had no control of anything like the heat defrost or anything that controlled with the touch screen including the rear camera and sensors to the car and from what i read that is a known problem with that car of that year.

Twice in 5 days the vehicle has “awd off” error message pop up when driving at 25mph, and has forced the vehicle into idle while in traffic. all of the mechanics we talked to won’t touch the vehicle because this a known issue, and direct us to the ford dealership to have it serviced. there is zero sense of safety when driving it.

Water leaks in through the third row seat belt tensioner. water runs down the seat belt and pools on the floor. this happens when the vehicle is stationary or moving. water in the seat belt assembly is a safety risk. i reported it to ford, they declined to fix it.

On 4/17/2019 my air bag light came on its not blinking just solid its been almost a week and light is still on. i have researched this issue and it appears to be a common issue with my ford year and model. from what i researched none of the ford repairs have permanently repaired this issue. from i have read in these complaints is the airbag will not deploy when this light is on wondering why there is not a recall for this very dangerous condition. i am not taken my car to a ford dealer to pay hundreds of dollars for a temporary fix this needs to be addressed asap.

Steering wheel locks up when you start truck and have to turn off and restarts to go away

Purchase vehicle 2 21 2019 and the two engine lights warning lights breaking decelerates which is very dangerous driving on the highways. service light tracking light stays on and the vehicle does all this on it's on. i have contacted by chat the ford corporation about this serious issue with this make and model. i was told their was no service bulletin so they could not help me. they refuse to address the dangerous matter this make and model has very dangerousand the lights are still on. also with the engine lights staying on all the time the cruise control does not work.

The control panel that shows the rear backing and then switches to controlling temperature, radio, seats, etc has failed. there is no backing assist or any controls for interior functions. the feature stopped when in motion and hasn’t come back on since.

Airbag lights have come on and off on my car for the past few years. ford fixed issue one time under warranty. faulty wire connection is what i was told and everything else was fine, according to ford dealership. my airbag lights are on once again and it appears this is a big problem with the ford explorers. it seems that 2011-2018 are affected by some sort of airbag malfunction. ford is not helping anyone and people are paying ford hundreds, if not thousands of dollars to fix the problem only for the problem to still exist. it is wide spread and not just an issue in certain climates. at what point does the manufacturer become liable for faulty safety equipment? we are all being told that our airbags will not deploy if in any accident, large or small, and to me this is a huge problem. how many lives need be lost or in jeopardy before someone can hold ford accountable for their obvious defect? this is my only vehicle and i simply cannot afford to have it in and out of the shop for repairs that shouldn’t even need to be done in the first place. i have several small children that ride in my vehicle daily and now i feel their lives are at risk whenever we go to the grocery store. i don’t have hundreds or thousands of dollars to keep dumping into my vehicle for a repair that ford should recall and fix themselves. there are a few tsb’s out at ford currently for the airbag systems and they seem to be primarily an issue with needing dielectric grease added at the connectors. i have found thousands of complaints from explorer owners with the same concerns and receiving little to no help from ford. it’s a matter of them saying “oh well” or “there’s nothing we can do”. this is completely unacceptable and quite frankly unbelievable that it’s happening on a 40k car. several mechanics have also stated that a safety issue of this magnitude should be a recall.

Power steering went out. my vehicle is part of the recall. took it to mcmullen ford in council bluffs, ia. they told me i’m 300 miles over the recall and it was going to cost $1,900 to fix. vehicle has 108,954 miles on it.

The same common problem with every single 2012 ford explorer. the airbag light came on and possibly disabled the airbag system. according to hundreds of explorer owners this issue is an endless money pit because there is no permanent fix and ford refuses to recall the vehicle for this problem. the cost for turning off the light at a ford dealership will be upwards of $400 and will only turn the airbag light off for a short while. i was promised by local ford dealer "there's a high probability i'll have to bring the car back in for this issues down the road and their apologies but there's nothing from ford to help me cover the cost of this repair". unsafe rip off.... pure and simple

I have an exhaust smell coming from my vents. this odor is present in the front and back seats of the car. it is present when the vehicle is in motion, as well as when it is stationary. it happens at random times and can happen while driving at a slower rate, and while driving at high speeds. the dealership cannot identify the source of the smell.

As i was driving on the highway out of no where i heard a flapping noise coming from the drivers side of the windshield, the saw a black piece of rubber immediately flapping around. i immediately slowed down and went to pull over to see what it was. then i heard a loud 'pop" and saw this black thing fly pass me. when i got out i realized the black pillar molding on the driver's side of the windshield had flown off. similarly enough, my room mate has the same year and model vehicle, about a week after mine flew off, her passenger side did the same thing, only driving on residential roads (slower speed). this piece is about 2 feet long, as a projectile filing off a vehicle in motion it very easily could have caused an accident or hit a pedestrian.

The car has water leaks, i started having problems with electrical function and fear of fire or contact in my car .

Start car and epas steering does not work. restart a couple of times was able to drive just once. the next day even restarting the car did not work. i see that their was a recall for this issue. i hope ford fixes this issue under the recall.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford explorer. while driving approximately 65 mph, the black plastic trim near the driver's side window fractured and scattered across the highway. as a result, the contact's visibility was impaired. the contact checked the rearview mirror and noticed the vehicle behind her swerve to avoid the debris on the roadway. kisselback ford (1118 13th st, st cloud, fl 34769, (407) 892-5477) was notified of the failure and indicated that the part may be ordered. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the vin and failure mileage were not available.

While driving on a rural road warning lights came on. pulled over, turned vehicle off. turned back on. complete power steering failure. appears to be same issue as previous recall.

In 2014 there was a recall for my vehicle. it was not fixed because when checked my car did not show any problem. now i cannot drive my car due to power steering assist fault. i called the dealership and was informed they cannot fix my car based on warranty because it previously checked out fine. this car is not safe to drive and quite expensive to fix. why can’t the recall still apply to my car. my car was in my driveway when it happened so thankfully no one was hurt. but the danger remains if i have to drive it anywhere without being able to get it fixed.

This is a safety issue - air bags could malfunction at anytime due to miscommunication within the system. air bags can deploy at anytime or can fail to deploy when necessary. air bag light turns on and stays on. according to ford dealer this is a known issue but has not yet been recalled. seat belt buckle replaced, air bag diagnostic module replaced, program control module air bag reprogramed. light continues to turn on. has a wire harness issue l/f door module srs - wiring loom needs to be replaced.

Windshield side molding braking apart and flying off during drive.

Our power steering failed completely on 12/17/2018. exact symptoms as described in former recall 14v286000 - somehow ford was able to change this recall to an extended warranty which lapses at 150,000 miles. our vehicle failed at 150,950 miles - rendering it extremely dangerous and impossible to control. repair costs over $2300. how the nhtsa can accept such an agreement as an extended warranty in place of a blanket recall demonstrates the power of the auto-maker lobby at the extreme detriment and danger to the american public. ford and nhtsa should be ashamed.

Power steering fault. the power steering just stopped work while i was driving with now warming until it was completely inoperable. i nearly crashed it to an on coming car in the parking lot of my gym. i notice there was a recall for this make and model but when i did a vin search my truck was not registering a recall.

Water leaks from roof rack and cracks in welding around tail-gate roof and welding around hinges. water is pooling and standing in the spare tire well. water is running down the driver side third row seat belt, down the sound proofing/ insulator pad over the frame, wicking onto the spare tire cover and floor cover. after investigating this on the internet, found many owners with the same issue and ford dealers are not addressing it.

When trying to make an unprotected left turn at a stop sign, i pressed the gas and my car didn’t move for a couple of seconds once it dod move it took a few more seconds for it to accelerate quickly to safely make my turn. the oncoming traffic in the lane i was crossing over for the turn had to brake suddenly because my car didn’t make it through the intersection fast enough. i was told that my turbo boost was bad. i have a 2012 eco boost model and it was classified as “under boost” which wasn’t allowing my car to accelerate properly and would eventually give out completely not allowing me to accelerate at all.

"power steering assist failure" warning when starting the car can usually be resolved by restarting the car and has been intermittent for the life of the vehicle, however the power steering (which is completely electronic--no pulley or hydraulics) is now failing while driving making the car nearly impossible to turn and especially at lower speeds because you're fighting through the electronic motor in the epas system.

My vehicle has failure on the electronic power ateering assist, as noted on recall campain 14v286000 by nhtsa for this vehicle but my vehicle was not on recall list. vehicle has experience loss of power on electronic power steering making ateering hard. today when driving on highway problem happened for the third time, had some trouble getting out of highway, i need to mive to the side of the road and turn off vehicle for some time and turned back on to restart the electronics.

Seat belt pretensioner. air bag light on and off at random while driving. not covered under warranty.

Took my 2012 ford explorer in to have the tires replaced and the next day there was an "odor" coming into the cab as well as outside of cabin as i was driving to work and when i stopped and got out of the vehicle.

Sync system died- no screen/no usb power/no navigation/no heat/cool control/no radio/no hand-free phone while driving on a highway- unable to restart or reboot.

The problem occurs again twice on 5/23/18 the wrench icon appears again, lost power, no acceleration, turn off the engine and restart..made an appointment back to coggins ford and they checked and still there is no code to see what is wrong with the car. they suggest that it might be the electronic throttle body if i want to replace it but not guarantee. with my approval i am taking my chances to replace it because i am scared i will be in a serious accident if i will not do something about it. i hope this will fix the problem and also hoping that you will do something about this incident. thank you.

The wipers will randomly turn on even if the switch is off. i have found that i have to turn the wipers on to the highest setting then immediately turn them off you get the wipers to stay off. my second problem is the air bag warning light will turn on at random times while driving. i can go weeks or months with out it turning on but i can also go weeks with it staying on 24/7. i have taken it to a ford dealer to be looked at and the answer i got was “we are not sure why it’s doing it but just put a towel on the dash to keep it from getting hot and that should fix it maybe”. i have found that while driving if my wife turns around to get/give something to our child the light will turn on when she fully sits back down.

This is the continuation of my 2012 ford explorer follow up complaint about the power train malfunction and reduced power that happen on 5/12/2018. as i mentioned in my last complaint that i took it to coggins ford in jacksonville on 5/14/18 and they checked my car and the service advisor said that they test droved and checked but no codes so they cannot do anything and he advised to keep on driving until it happens again and to bring it back. now, i am nervous driving this car, it might put me and my passengers in a dangerous situation if suddenly this happen again loss of power and stalling while driving. this a serious safety and it can lead to accidents, injury or death. i hope ford will investigate and have a recall on this problem.

I was driving on the highway with the speed of 60 miles per hour and suddenly the wrench icon shows on the left hand side of my steering wheel and my car speed is slowing down. i tried to push my accelerator harder but it will not pick up speed, so i pull off the road and turn off my engine. after a few minutes, i started my car and it starts and drove home with a low speed and made an appointment to coggins ford in jacksonville,fl.05/14/2018. i will follow up on the result.

While driving on highway, lost power and speed dropped. it was like engine stopped working properly. had to pull off road, it was so scary on highway to loose power not to mention dangerous!!! check engine light came on. after taking to ford dealership, found out that ecoboost turbo had blown and seized up.

I have been experiencing “power steering assist fault” errors on startup on my 2012 ford explore fwd. this results in complete power steering failure which makes it impossible for me to turn the wheel to either direction. i’ve read that there is a recall but ford has not sent me any notifications in mail or notified me when i had the car at the dealership for service.

Vehicle was in motion when power steering locked up and all dash lights flashed. resulted stranded on side of busy road and all power steering failed. was driving side street at time of occurrence. i made multiple attempts to contact ford corporate to resolve and they refuse to cover under guaranteed recall of the power steering rack and pineon. i have auto service center repairs with a repair cost of $2000.00. please assist in covering this cost for repairs under warranty recall. i have only owned this vehicle for 2 years. thank you.

The power steering assist fault will randomly shut down my ability to steer the vehicle. this happened once while leaving my driveway to take my kids to the bus stop. i could not budge the steering, i lost all control. i turned the vehicle off, than restarted it, the assist fault was not on now and i was able to drive. luckily this occurred be for i left my driveway because you loose all control of the steering. other times it comes on when i start the vehicle and will not go off right away, leaving me stuck at work, grocery store so on. my car is now in my driveway with the fault on. i have tried everyday, but the car is not drivable and the fault will not shut off this time. i have only owned this car for two years and only drive it when i have to. i don't feel safe in a car that looses steering at any time. if i'm on the highway when it shuts down i feel this is risking life and safety of myself and anyone around me.

Monday, february 18, 2019 when i startedmy car i started smelling a strong order of a natural gas smell coming from my car. it gets so bad that i have to roll down the windows at times. i contacted ford regarding this however they said thatt since me car is out of warranty it will be be covered and there are no current recalls on this vehicle. it's a constant gas smell whether i'm driving, idling, or parked. this is not safe.

My explorer smells very strongly of exhaust when accelerating. it makes me nauseous and passengers do not want to get in my car — i don’t want to get in my car. ford’s customer service program has not addressed the issue and they have not even acknowledged the issue. plugging up two small plugs in the trunk and reprogramming the air conditioning/heat system does not address an apparent exhaust leak. i have spoken with employees of ford, seen countless stories online — this issue is not unknown or undiagnosable. i hope that the nhtsa may provoke ford to do the right thing before someone get seriously hurt.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford explorer. approximately two and a half years after the vehicle was repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 14v286000 (steering), the steering ability failed and the power steering indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to junge cedar rapids (319-393-6500, located at 1200 boyson rd, hiawatha, ia 52233) where it was diagnosed that the power steering gear failed and needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to nhtsa. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 100,100.

Power steering locks up and needs replacement. ford dealer claims this is not covered under recall, and vin search indicated no open recall for this vehicle. dealer has reset vehicle computer and that may be why no open recall shows up. internet searches indicate that this is a very common problem and should have been covered under a previous recall, but there is no evidence that the vehicle ever had recall work done. so far the problem only presents itself upon initial startup while the vehicle is stationary. however, internet searches show that others have had steering lock up while in motion, causing vehicle accidents.

At beginning, vehicle frequently suddenly reduce the speed while driving, then i experienced the difficulty to start the engine in the morning. miss fire of the engine experienced during both in driving and morning engine start. the vehicle also accelerate when the driving speed around 20 mph in city driving, and suddenly reducing the speed when it is around 80 mph on highway. so i decided to send it to a local repair shop for finally i parked inside of the garage and waiting to delivery it diagnostic, but the repair shop could detect anything wrong in mechanic, therefore they recommend ne send it to ford dealer for further testing. after store this vehicle in the garage for few days, the engine can not start at all. i had to tow it to ford dealer for further testing. the only error ford dealer found is the re-installation of pcm software. which ford had a recall on this vehicle, the recall work was performed by the same ford dealer on 11-15-2016. after last week re-install the pcm software by ford dealer, i still experience the uneven shaking when the engine accelerate to 4000 rpm (not driving condition), as well as the diving speed close to 80 mph on highway. buy ford dealer claims these symptoms are very normal of the ford expedition.

Oil is collecting at my air intake. i have replace the pcv valve but it is still leaking oil onto my air filter. this is also causing fumes in the vehicle.

Could not fill my gas tank because it was blocked by some piece of metal. at a gas station. went to an auto repair shop and the mechanic had to use 2 screwdrivers to push the metal obstacle away. i was then able to put gas in.

Sometimes my steering wheel will lock and i can not move and i am driving with my children and that scared me i’ve called the tow truck twice taking it to the dealership for them to find nothing. now my vechile is starting to shake when i’m driving and i’m tired of taking to the dealership for nothing. i’ve taken to 2 dealership and they say the same thing. it’s always when i’m driving. it’s all i the dealership papers. i’m sick and tired of this . it started about 1 year after i got it. i would not buy another ford

Sudden grinding in the steering wheel. suspect it is related to a prematurely failing steering gear box. occurred while vehicle was stationary

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford explorer. while operating the vehicle, there was an odor being emitted from the exhaust that caused the contact to feel nauseous and dizzy. the vehicle was taken to barber ford (640 e 8th st. holland, michigan 49423) on three separate occasions to have the voluntary ford exhaust campaign completed. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure persisted. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and advised the contact that the failure he was experiencing was not part of the voluntary ford exhaust campaign. the failure mileage and vin were not provided.

Drivers side inside door handle, spring sprung, and door handle is almost all the way open. just by touching it, the door opens. with this being a front door, the lock wont allow it not to open. there is a recall on this exact same problem, but they say my vehicle isn't covered. they said the vin number isn't part of this recall, yet it is the same issue the recall was issued for. the recall number is15s11.

I am worried about the carbon monoxide in my ford explorer. i was driving a friend of my to lunch and she got insanely red and broke out in hives the minute i turned the heat on. i ride with the windows open because i am concerned about the air in the cabin with my 2 year old who has asthma. there is always a smell when you turn either the air or the heat on.

You can smell exhaust fumes in the cab of vehicle, after about 15 minutes of driving i get a headache and dizzy and have to roll the windows down for the dizziness to go away. sounds like a simple fix however when its 8 degrees outside and you have children you cant really be rolling the windows down. since having this vehicle i have gone to the hospital/doctors multiple times for fatigue and headaches to which i have had to get treatment. i used to spend my lunch hour at work in my vehicle and now i cant do this because i will get nauseous and feel like i am going to faint. i am scared to be transporting my children in my vehicle due to this now. after looking into what was going on with my car i found many more people that have had these issues and i'm curious as to why ford hasn't issued a recall for this yet to get this fixed. i am hoping this helps ford realize that something needs to be done. most people with these suvs are parents with kids. not sure how ford can feel okay with themselves over putting children in the situation of inhaling carbon monoxide. if it was an option for us i would purchase a new vehicle but unfortunately that's not financially an option at this moment. i purchased my vehicle in march of 2016.

The windshield pillars fly off while driving, an the wheather stripping under it does not stay, it slowly flaps out when at driving at speeds of 50-70mph. when the wheather strip flys off it causes the pillars to break more when driving on highway

Steering assist fault

While i was about to make a turn at a four-way stop, the power steering assist notification came on and my steering wheel locked. i ran up onto the sidewalk. had there been any pedestrians, they would have gotten hit.

While driving the stability control lights came on and the wheel got tuff.

Multiple times my brakes have had to have repairs because of a failure in the emergency brake system. twice within the past 6 months i have had the e-brake lock up, get stuck, or fail in a way that required full replacement of my rotors, pads, brake lines, and fluid resulting in thousands of dollars in damages. after the first failure in this, i stopped using the e-brake, however had the problem repeat itself only a few months later. the time earlier this year was noticed when the brakes were pulsating while driving, and the second occurrence this year was noticed when the fluid was drained and a "low brake fluid" light came on, and was further examined after fluid did not stay in the system for very long (matter of an hour or two).

Steering gears lock steering system almost causing a crash with my 11 year old son in the car.

While driving and going into turn power steering warning came on causing total loss of control of vehicle. was able to stop and have vehicle towed to dealership.

The airbag light keeps coming on, it has been addressed before by the dealer but continues to happen. now that my car is out of warranty i would be responsible for this issue that is very common with this car.

2012 ford explorer xlt 4w. the terrain management system fault light came on and car went immediately into limp mode on a major road.there was no warning and was almost rear ended. took to dealer oct.1 and they kept it two days. the dealer said they could not find a code. dealer said it is fixed by updating and calibrating the abs system. it was not fixed. . oct 13 same light went on and car immediately into limp mode on expressway. nearly caused accident because car immediately slowed down and would not go more than 5mph in limp mode. you loose complete control of the transmission and throttle. there are 53+ cases with this problem on the internet just this year. https://www.carcomplaints.com/ford/explorer/2016/engine/wrench_light_on.shtml this happens suddenly while driving and without warning. the car immediately begins to shutter and vibrate and immediate begins to slow down to 5mph. this is a dangerous situation and should be investigated. you have no control over the speed of the car or the transmission.. please google (terrain management system fault light) and see that there are many more ford cars are affected by this problem there are 3 youtubes showing this problem. they cars are not safe to drive. anyone who had a terrain management system light that goes on while driving will experience the same dangerous situation

Front passenger seat pretensioner has failed causing the airbag light to come on. a technical service bulletin has been created on ford's end blaming the connect. see tsb 12-5-11. it tells the mechanic to inject dielectric grease as a fix.

Airbag light illuminates soon after being fixed at dealer. literally went on prior to driving home from dealer only to turn around and bring it back. have had the vehicle in the dealership on numerous occasions in the last year. no one can answer the question: is the whole airbag system dismantled while on? if you turn car off and on it will disappear and come on soon after. called ford customer service only to be told they can't answer the question. been dealing with this constantly since prior to august 2017

After parking my vehicle in my drive way (vehicle was in park with emergency brake applied) i exited the vehicle and the vehicle started rolling forwards down my slopped driveway. i attempted to chase the vehicle hoping to jump in and apply the brake but was unable to. vehicle came to a stop after hitting my fence, bushes, and a small tree. there was body damage to the front right portion of the vehicle.

The vehicle at start up has disabled power steering causing the vehicle unable to be steered. the vehicle was in a driveway and was about to place into drive gear when the warning light came on and could no longer turn the steering wheel.

My vehicles is expediting recall 14s06 and has happened 2x and for dinner is as saying my vin number is born unser the recall. help

I have a 2012 ford explorer and i really like it but i've been having problems with it. since november of 2016 every time it rains or snows i come in to the truck to find a puddle of water on the front passenger side floor. lately when it rains it's like it is literally raining inside my truck. the water leaks right through the top where my light and the buttons for my sunroof is. now my back up camera doesn't work and my truck is starting to smell like mole. i'm also afraid that the water leakage is going to destroy all electrical problem or cause a an electrical fire while i'm in my truck with my kids. i also don't want my floor to rust. can you pleas help me in finding out where is the problem coming from? a coworker of mine is the same problem with her truck as well.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford explorer. while driving 7 mph, a grinding metal sound was heard and the vehicle stopped. the contact shut off the vehicle and restarted it, but it would not engage into gear. the contact had the vehicle towed to his personal auto mechanic and was informed that the passenger side axle mount fractured. the technician replaced the passenger side axle mount. while test driving the vehicle after the repair, the contact noticed that the instrument panel lighting, including the wrench icon, the service advance track indicator, and the cross traffic system fault indicator illuminated. the mechanic stated that the vehicle would have to be taken to the dealer to be reprogrammed so the instrument panel lighting would dim. the contact took the vehicle to helfman ford (12220 southwest fwy, stafford, tx 77477) to be reprogrammed. there were no recall for the failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 74,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford explorer. while driving 72 mph, the contact turned on the heater. approximately 15 minutes later, the contact became tired and sleepy. the contact rolled down the window and felt better approximately six minutes later. the contact experienced this issue several times within the past two years, mainly during the cooler months due to having the windows rolled up. the contact stated that this seemed to be a carbon monoxide failure. the dealer and manufacturer were not notified. there were no recalls associated with the vin. the failure mileage was unknown.

Service power steering. advance trac light came on. unable to steer vehicle while on highway doing 55mph. we are unable to get this car repaired due to high cost to ship car 572miles out of town. told us that we need to pay for the repair and will get reimbursed at later date. however after explaining we don’t have money to ship it they offer little to no help. there is a local shop that does warranty repairs but we have to pay out of pocket up to $1,600 not including labor costs of repairs done to vehicle. ford then said “repairs and services would be our responsibility” explained in photo documentation

Dizziness, nausea from driving vehicle in september, october, november and december 2016. auto in motion. when driving auto 1-30 miles or more, when i got out of car i was dizzy and at times had to hold onto a pole or anything near me to regain balance. i felt tired all the time. i purchased a new 2017 ford expedition in jan 02, 2017 and i have not been dizzy since. i noticed chicago tribune article in the rides section of sunday feb. 4th, 2018 issue written by phoebe wall howard of detroit press and it hit a nerve with me that this may have been the problem. high carbon monoxide level in car cabin.

My 2012 ford explorer limited edition has an exhaust leak that is pushing fumes into the cabin of the vehicle. the noxious fumes enter the cabin and induce nausea and severe headaches. the vehicle has been brought to a certified ford dealership who has confirmed that this leak is part of a largely known issue that occurs with the explorers'. i have been informed that while ford recognizes the problem, they have yet to produce the parts required to fix it, and i have to sit and wait for ford to do what is necessary on their part, which is going to take an undetermined amount of time. in the meantime i am forced to drive around with these fumes entering my vehicle.

Heavy fumes are entering my car causing headaches. recall was performed and problem continues to persist.

Strong carbon monoxide odor coming through the hvac vents when i was driving to work. i rolled down my window to get the odor out of the vehicle. i have noticed this odor in the past but i figured that it was coming from outside of the vehicle from other motorists. after receiving notice that this is a recall and is potentially coming from my vehicle, i will go ahead and schedule an appt. to get this resolved. this is a dangerous issue to have. more importantly with my family in the vehicle. if the ford "fix" doesn't resolve the issue my question is, what am i to do about this? the final payment for my 2012 ford explorer is due on 01/15/2018. i really do not want to have to purchase another vehicle after paying $698 for the past 6 years. if this issue continues i'd expect ford to do 1 of 2 things, 1. take back the ford explorer and let me trade for another ford vehicle of equal cost to what i paid for my explorer, less the interest. 2. refund my $46k that i paid for my ford explorer as you have sold me an unsafe vehicle. i've already had the issue of losing power steering while i was driving on multiple occasions. luckily i got that issue resolved from a previous recall. please help us nhtsa as we should not have to tolerate unsafe vehicles at our expense. it seems like the hard working people are the only ones that pay for manufacturer's mistakes. let's start punishing these big companies so that they do a better job regarding people's safety. thank you!

Steering wheel locks up while driving. i have to turn the car off in order to unlock the steering wheel. very dangerous. dealer made me buy a new battery and "reprogrammed" vehicle, but the problem came back.. it's happened multiple times. most recently on 1/10/18.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford explorer. the contact stated that the windshield weather stripping became loose. also, the interior door panel molding on the front driver and passenger sides separated from the doors. furthermore, the rear hatch was not welded together, which caused water to enter the trunk area. the failures occurred without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer (randall reed's planet ford 59, 19000 eastex fwy, humble, tx 77338). the dealer stated that the vin was not included in a recall and that the contact would have to pay for the repairs. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was contacted at 800-392-3673 and asked the contact to call nhtsa. the approximate failure mileage was 71,000.

Gear steering assy problem. stiffness in steering

A few times at slow speeds the “power steering assist fault” light would come on and it was very difficult to steer. if the engine was turned off and back on, it would clear the issue. this last time it happened the “service advancetrac” light also came on and the issue could not be cleared. the car was too difficult to steer and had to be towed to the dealership. all of these happened at slow speeds.

The airbag light is on. it does not flash it's just on all the time. i took the vehicle in for an oil change and asked the ford dealership to check it out and they said they did not have time and when i asked if it was covered they said i would have to pay for it. i called the ford dealership today and asked about bringing it in and eric again said i would have to pay for it and he knows nothing about a recall or any problems with the air bags. i have read online that there are over 850,000 fords who have a recall due to the airbags malfunctioning. i am also told that the airbag will not deploy. this is my only transportation and i feel this is very dangerous. i will never buy another ford again. the customer service is horrible.

Power steering assist fault, lose of steering at low speed lost control and hit curb

The vehicle would randomly go into limp mode. in limp mode the vehicle would no longer respond to the accelerator pedal and would stay at a rough idle. it did not matter whether you were going 10 mph or 70 mph. it happened once when on a narrow bridge during rush hour. it always happened when trying to accelerate but did not matter what position the pedal was in to begin with. shutting the car off and opening the door would reset it and it would work again until the next time. it turned out that the throttle body was defective. it took two visits to the dealership until they could figure out the problem and cost $500 to fix. the fact that it was random and you lost all means of acceleration could be extremely dangerous especially when merging into high speed traffic. my wife refused to drive it.

Our power steering system finally went out on our 2012 xlt. in fact, the wife was driving on the interstate with our two toddlers at 75mph when it went out. she pulled over and i had to meet up with her and drive it home (not easy). we would have been eligible for the recall if this happened 8k miles ago, but since we are over the 150,000 limit, i get to pay $1940.00 to get it repaired(getting repaired as this is typed). its sad really, because when i was at 120k, i was having issues with the power steering and was hoping to get it replaced at the dealer, however at the time, they were "unable to replicate the issue" so no action was taken. i am disappointed, because it takes a complete failure (and endangerment to lives) for the recall to be initiated. i wonder if gm's ignition recall is the same way? i could repair it myself as its not too bad of a job, but due to being busy, it would probably take a week or two for me to do alone and this is our primary family vehicle. my service adviser has been nothing but helpful but have to say that i am disappointed in fords approach to the failure of a major component of the vehicle.

After starting the car while parked the 'service advance trac" warning came on. after driving approx. 100 feet the warning went away. there was a slight hardness in the steering at this time. that went away when the warning went away. this occurred on nov. 10, 2017. the second problem occurred on nov. 23, 2017. while parked overnight and all day in our garage i started the car and the "power steering assist fault'' warning came on. i could not turn the steering wheel at all. i turned off the engine and within 10 to 15 seconds i started the car again. no warning came on and the power steering worked o.k. i started the car again this morning and no warning or problem.

On 3 separate occasions over the last 3 years the airbag warning indicator light on the dash has come on, for no apparent reason. on each occasion i have taken the vehicle to my local ford service center where they finally determined that the solution was to apply some dielectric grease to the electric connectors under the drivers seat. this fix was covered under my extended warranty on the first 2 occasions on the 3rd they agreed to apply the grease at no cost to me. my service center has told me that when this problem occurs the airbag will not deploy. wondering why something as important as an airbag has loose connectors which hang down under the drivers seat, seems like a design flaw? why is there no recall to permanently fix this issue.

There is a smell of gasoline in and outside of the vehicle at all times. the check engine light keeps reappearing even after continuous examination.

Brake system malfunctioning and ford dealership has the vehicle for 2 months and unable to repair due to bad production parts

2012 ford explore limited. while driving on highway, the car suddenly with no warning decreased speed then a wrench warning light came on in the lower left dash panel, and the car was idling very rough. even though i was pressing on the gas pedal to accelerate, there was no response. i was able to limp it home at literally 2 mph in "limp mode". the car did not respond when i pressed the acceleration pedal although i still had power. i had to have it towed to dealership to be checked out. after researching what it could be, i learned it is possibly the electronic throttle body (etb) and/or purge valve. i am passed extended warranty naturally and probably going to be left with a huge bill. why is this not a recall ford????? it is clearly a manufactured issue with this many people experiencing this same issue.

When takin off at higher speed like to pass someone, a smell of exhaust fumes fills the car through the air system. it’s so bad we have to roll the windows down to get it to go away. my babies even complain of the horrible smell. this has been going on for months and i’ve heard of now as a big problem.

Power steering quit working in the parking lot. has no power steering. has had a software update to fix the steering and was told the steering needed replaced but the part was on back order and then was told the vehicle didn’t qualify to have the steering rack replaced and now it has failed.

An exhaust odor repeatedly occurred in the cabin while the vehicle was accelerating.

Exhaust leaking back into the vehicle. as i accelerate, it smells like gas fumes coming from a/c vents. i noticed it from the day i bought the vehicle.

(re)starting august 1, 2017, while driving, the vehicle would suddenly and without warning decelerate, with no response from the gas pedal. ford calls this their "limp home mode." the wrench icon warning would display and the entire vehicle would shudder until it was put in park and turned off. usually, it would resume normal operations after being restarted, however, on one occasion, it took three attempts to restart. after two such incidents occurring in less than a mile, i don't feel safe driving on the highway (or, really, any other place) as there is no indication to other drivers and the vehicle actively decelerates, rather than coasting. during one such incident, the deceleration was so pronounced that passengers jerked forward in their seats and a canine passenger lost its footing, falling into the back of the seats. we previously experienced this same issue in 2015, leaving me and a small child stranded when the vehicle did not restart at all. as part of a "goodwill" repair due to the vehicle being just out of warranty, the etb (electronic throttle body) and purge valve were replaced by ford. i filed complaint 10787972 with the nhtsa on 10/25/2015. in 5 years, this will be the second replacement of a part that's expected to last well over 6 years. ford is aware of the problem, is and has been sued, and is being investigated.

Purchased this car in august 2015. every time i accelerate quickly to pass someone or go up hill fumes enter the car. very strong odor and i have two young daughters who are unable to tell me if they feel funny from the fumes. purge valve sensor replaced due to engine light coming on repeatedly.

While driving down the highway my explorer made a loud clunk sound and then the wrench symbol appeared on my dashboard. then the gas pedal quit working, and we had to roll off the highway avoiding being hit by other traffic. i had to stop and restart my car 5-6 times before the gas pedal would work again. this has happened 5 times in the past two months, and when i called to have it serviced they told me the wrench light had to be on for them to identify the problem. but i cant go anywhere when the wrench light comes on and a tow truck will not tow a car with it running for me to get it to the dealership to be tested. this is a safety issue that other people are having. the throttle body is going out on many explorers after 55,000 miles. is it going to take deaths before this is a recall?

Throttle body electronics, vehicle will suddenly stop. i was driving in traffic at 55mph and suddenly stopped moving when failure occurred. dashboard indicated a 4 wheel drive or engine check. i was slowed to 2mph luckily no other vehicles were behind me. this is very dangerous in traffic, no warning. ford knows about this problem and is not recalling vehicles why, the parts are in short supply my suv was in the garage for 10 days waiting for part, this issue should be a recall. ford repaired my explorer but many drivers are on the road and have no idea this could happen to them. safety first please

When accelerating to gain access to a highway or just speeding up on a local street, there is a gas or burnt oil smell that permeates the cabin of the vehicle. this happens every time i accelerate, every day.

The airbag warning light is constantly illuminated. after researching the problem at http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/index.php?threads/air-bag-light-seat-belt-warning.349429/ this appears to be a common problem among all of the fifth generation ford explorers. electrical connectors under the seats that run to the seat weight sensors are having continuity issues and causing airbags to not deploy.

When i was driving my ford explorer 2012 on a busy highway (us 60), the vehicle suddenly reminded me that "power steering assist fault", then the steering wheel became inoperable, which put me in an extremely dangerous position. very luckily, no accident happened; a gentleman stepped out his vehicle and told me to restart the vehicle; after that my vehicle become operable. this is the first time, "power steering assist fault" occurred in this vehicle, and it was completely unexpected during driving in a busy highway. it is a very dangerous fault!!! on oct. 1st, 2014, this vehicle's "power steering control module" was reprogrammed, (2011-2013 explorer, electric power steering reprogram pscm), at a ford dealer. the fault occurred today appears an evidence that the "reprogram" did not solve the problem. given a large number of ford explorers running on the road, i believe, this is a very serious highway safety problem.

Electronic throttle body failure while driving 65 mph on the highway. very dangerous.

Driver door bounced when closing. would not latch. tried twice. went outside of vehicle. found part of door latch on ground. able to cycle latch with key fob and door was able to latch to get home. was repaired under a service contract for $100. seems like a safety issue with the latch assembly. vehicle was parked at the time .

The hood has paint that is bubbling up and coming off. the hood is aluminum so it isn't rusting, it appears that that the metal was not prepped properly at the factory

The driver side door handle assembly / spring came apart and the handle remained stuck in the open position as a small piece of black plastic from behind the handle molding became wedged between the door interior and the handle itself (leaving it propped in the 'open' position)

Repeated issue with malfunctioning tcm. went into default mode while driving on state highway. repairs made but have since taken vehicle in again for same service issue and is scheduled for a third repair. i know the 2012 focus, fiesta and expedition have class action suits due to tcm. dealer has twice told me vehicle is safe to drive in it's current state since service and check engine lights are not flashing in default mode.

I was driving on i30 eastbound in texas on october of 2015 when without warning my passenger side windshield molding came off and hit the car behind me. after stopping and checking both vehicles no injuries or dam age to the other vehicle and we went on our way. i contacted my ford dealer and was told that this was not warranted and the cost to repair would be around $400. i expressed my displeasure with this and had it repaired.i chalked it off to a fluke, on may 10 2016 we were coming back from an event doing about 65mph when i heard something "pop" and realized something was wrong. the freeway was busy and it was at night so the decision was made to keep driving as we were only a couple of miles from home. upon arriving at home our inspection revealed that this time the windshield molding on the drivers side had come off. knowing the cost of repair i decided to search the internet and see if i could buy the parts myself and repair. while doing the search i found that the web was loaded with hundreds of complaints about the same re-occurring problems. the cost of these parts are over $200 but more than that is the safety issue that is involved. if this defective part had come off and hit a motorcycle rider it could have caused serious injury possibly even the death of the rider. this is and ongoing problem that is costing consumers money and risking injury to to anyone who happens to be in the wrong place at the right time. ford motor company knows about the defect yet refuses to act. i feel that they are intentionally putting motorists at risk by their complacency on the problem.

The seat belt sign keeps coming on. i have taken it to the dealership three times. they have corrected "the problem" all 3 times and the next day the light is back on. every once in a while the seat belt sign turns off but comes back on within a couple of days.

When we first bought the explorer in 2012 the steering quit working on a hill and my wife crashed into a bank and a concrete light pole. never was paid back for our insurance deductible plus now we have a wreck car not worth nothing even thought it was repaired. ford did there update recall to the steering. all has been fine till april 2016. twice it has showed a steering assist fault and the steering wheel wouldn't move. luckily it was in the driveway. ford can't look at it for a week so it sits in our driveway my wife is scared to drive it again and i don't blame her. so here we are again same problem which was suposabley fixed

There are water leaks on the hatchback on both sides and it was determined by the dealership that there is a water leak in the right rear body seam..other leaks could be possible.when it rains the wheel well has 3 inches of water in it. we had to remove the spare tire and the mold is making me sick..it's a overwhelming smell and it is not safe to drive with no spare

When stepping on the brakes, i could feel and hear a drag. car has 17,400 miles, right rear pads were metal to metal and cut into the rotor. rr brake pads were extremely difficult to remove, indicating the pads were seized into the bracket. this wording is taken from the ford service repair invoice. i have had many cars and never had to replace brakes at a low mileage. this is a safety issue that needs to be looked into.

This vehicle leaks water in the wheel well when it rains and has cased the carpet to mold...there are cracks in the rear hatchback and under the luggage rack and the right rear window has a stream of water going in the rear down the seat belt cannot have the spear tire in the vehicle because it has to have a towel there to soak up the water..mold makes me sick to drive it..

My wife first told me she thought she had a flat in the front tire because the steering wheel was pulling back and forth. she stopped to check, no flats. restarted the vehicle and all was good. later that week while driving her dashboard lights blinked including the traction control lights. (she wasn't sure what other lights illuminated) at the same time the power steering failed. the software fix had already been done for recall 14s06 last august. took the vehicle to the dealer and was told the battery didn't have enough charge to run diagnostics? there was never any sign of a weak battery. i had no recourse but to have them change it. after installing the new one i was told no codes are present that would warrent any additional service. i am not confident at all that this vehicle is safe to drive.

I first reported an incident with the loss of power steering on march 24. i was told the problem was resolved by the dealer by replacing my battery? here it is 10 days later and another power steering assist failure. vehicle was remote started from inside our home. 5 or more minutes later my wife got in the truck to find no power steering and the "power steering assist fault" error message on the dash.

2012 ford explorer rear brakes - vehicle was purchased as a certified pre-owned. part of certifying the vehicle was to replace the rear pads and rotors at 20k miles. at 32k i found myself having to replace pads and rotors again. this is known issue with ford explorers where pads are seizing in the calipers and dragging on the rotors causing premature wear. ford dealers and ford customer service are refusing to recognize this as problem, and more importantly as a potential safety issue.

The front drivers side pillar blew off my vehicle while driving at normal speed on i-75 (70 mph). it just missed a car that was following me. the plate that holds the pillar on the frame, shows stress cracking at each bolt and the lower two tabs that connect the pillar are sheared. the tabs at the top of the pillar pulled out completely. i had taken this vehicle to the dealership to complain about the noise the wind noise coming from the sides of the windshield. they said that they couldn't determine the problem and advised me that i would have to pay to have the pillar assembly replaced if i wanted to get rid of the noise. they did not remove the pillar to inspect anything, likely knowing they would damage it.

While on freeway, car suddenly decreased speed even though i was pressing on the pedal to excelerate. it has happened a few more times but luckily i was not on freeway. took it in to mac haick and they said it was the throttle body. my car has less than 30,000 miles and i asked if this was common and was told no. he said that sometimes it happens with more that 60,000. i asked if there was a recall and was told no. i then called ford customer service, the rep said that they did not have any recalls and gave me a case #8559890.

Water leaks inside the cabin every time it rains or car gets washed. water drips down from top through rear seatbelt retractors near rear hatch/door and streams down seat belts and then puddles under third row seat and spare tire well. leaks anytime no matter if parked or in motion. seatbelts and seat bolts/hinges are starting to rust. wires near 12v cigarette lighter and tail lights also get wet. 2012 ford explorer xlt (no sunroof/moonroof).

While making a left hand turn, the power steering went out, causing my vehicle to veer into a brick mailbox and ditch. resulting in major damage to my vehicle and mailbox. also causing injury to my right arm and shoulder.

Check charging system light comes on daily. while driving the car on a city street, radio shut off, lights dimmed and car cut off in the middle of traffic, steering also became difficult before shutting off.

There weeks after the front windshield was replaced the lh a-pillar flew off the car while moving on the highway. the car was moving at 65 mph.

On 6/29/15 while driving to work at about 40 mph the awd off light came on with a wrench on my 2012 ford explorer, the vehicle suddenly decreased in speed to less than 5 mph. pulled over turned the vehicle off & then turned back on. computer seemed to reset itself. took vehicle to ford & said they could not replicate the problem. then again tonight (11/9/15) on my way home from work, again going about 40 mph, the awd off light with the wrench came on again. speed immediately dropped to less than 5 mph & vehicle made grinding noises. pulled over, turned the vehicle off & turned back on. computer reset itself again & immediately drove it to ford. the only message they could find was a code for loss of communication to bcm. was told there was nothing they could do and if it happened again to leave the vehicle running, call roadside assistance & have them tow it in while still running. i live in a rural area that does not have many places to pull over when your vehicle breaks down and i do not understand why the computer systems memory does not track these messages. i guess it will take a fatality before ford rectifies the problem.

November 13, 2015 carolina, puerto rico i'm driving normally then a wrench light pops up on the dash & says "see service manual". i then immediately without warning loose all control to my gas pedal & the engine shakes at an idle. i am forced to pull over. we return home less 10 mile per hour, then turn the car off. once i turn it back on it "warnings 0" in some way & runs normally.

Issue has occurred multiple times, under different conditions. without warning, the vehicle loses acceleration and the wrench icon and awd errors display. the throttle becomes unresponsive, but all other systems remain functioning. if you leave it in gear without the brakes engaged, it will move at idle speed on flat ground, but is unable to navigate inclines. when slowing to a stop, the whole vehicle shudders. stopping and restarting normally returns the vehicle to normal operation. however, on october 25, it failed to start and had to be towed to the dealer. there is no external indication of this sudden loss of power and it creates a very dangerous situation because it happens without warning and you are only able to steer and brake to control the vehicle. our 2012 explorer is currently at the dealership, who has indicated that the problem is the electronic throttle body (etb) and purge valve. ford is aware that there is an issue with etbs with other models, reference nhtsa action # pe13003, and explorers, reference nhtsa #10054323 and 10053276, ford tsb # tsb-13-9-8 and tsb-13-5-29. description: lincoln/ford: due to diagnostic trouble codes (dtc) p0106, p0236, engine on some vehicles experience hesitation, loss of idle rpm, difficult in starting, lack of power, running rough and crank no start situation. description: ford: due to blocked vapor purge line port in air cleaner outlet pipe assembly, the mil would illuminate, with dtc p144c.

I'm driving normally then randomly a wrench light pops up on the dash & says "see service manual". i then immediately without warning loose all control to my gas pedal & the engine shakes at an idle. i am forced to pull over (mind you with my 2 kids in the car when this has happened 3 times in 1 month). then turn the car off. once i turn it back on it "resets" in some way & runs normally (until this happens again). the first time it happened was 3 weeks ago on a weekend late morning driving maybe 45mph, the 2nd time was this past tuesday 11/2/15 in the evening after work at 5:15pm driving may 35mph. i took it to the dealer they said it was "fixed" & they sent me on my way. then it happened the 3rd time the next morning on 11/3/15 @ 7:30am when i was stopping at a stop sign so i wasn't going more than 5mph. it's been back at ford since then & they said they "can't fix it if it doesn't show up for them or the can't duplicate the problem" meanwhile myself & i have no vehicle to school & work. & the worst part is all tree times my kids were with me & there could've been an accident but ford won't do anything.

2012 ford explorer rear brakes - vehicle was purchased as a cpo. part of certifying the vehicle was to replace the rear pads and cut rotors at 20k miles. now at 32k i had to replace rear pads and rotors again due to seized calipers that caused the pads to drag and prematurely wear the pads. this is known issue with ford explorers where pads are seizing in the calipers and dragging on the rotors causing premature wear. ford denies that there is any issue, yet the internet is full of stories of people who have experienced this issue. i feel the nhtsa should look into this as a possible safety issue for someone who may not be aware of the problem and be driving around with brakes that will eventually fail them possibly causing an accident.

This happened three times at speeds of 40, 50 and 60 mph, on highway, veh. engine light comes on and veh. comes to a stop. the engine is still idling but the gas petal does not work. there is no warning, the veh. just comes to a stop.i was lucky to have been on rural two lane roads so i could pull of road. if you were on a multi lane highway you would be in big trouble, because veh. comes to a stop and you have no control of the speed. the first problem, switched off veh. restated, no engine light and everything worked, took veh. to ford, they check it out, could not find any problem. the veh. worked fine for about 6000 more thousand miles, then at 60 mph it cut off again, i got off road, restarted veh. engine light stayed on but gas petal worked. i drove about two more miles and veh. cut of again, engine idling gas petal not working. restarted veh. engine light stayed on but gas petal was working. i drove veh. to ford dealer, they now said the problem was the throttle module. ford said there was no recall on this module, so i paid over $600 for the repair work. this is a very serious safety problem there should be a recall or something to warn ford explorer owners this could happen to them. i would think, i am not the only explorer owners to have had this problem.

While driving to work, exhaust fumes in my car nearly put me to sleep. i took it to my ford dealership to find the problem, and learned that ford has a service bulletin to correct this issue, so they have been aware of this problem. this should have been a safety related recall, but instead i must pay $885.00 to repair this known safety issue.

I was driving my 2012 ford explorer at a reduced speed, approaching an unprotected left turn on green when my car suddenly jerked and sputtered and lost speed triggering the wrench icon to light up on my panel. i was applying gas to complete the intersection with no acceleration. i crawled through the intersection as my car continued to lose power and idle loudly and sputter. i was barely able to get off the road and had this been a busier time of the morning could have been in a side impact crash. the service center cleaned the throttle body and the problem appeared to be solved until almost a year later 9/25/2015, as i had just shifted from reverse to drive and as i accelerated and began driving, my car suddenly sputtered and went into the same stall described above. i applied gas and tried to accelerate with no success. the wrench light came on again. i was told to turn it off and then back on which allowed me to drive it with caution, to the service center. after diagnosis at my local service center, it was determined that the electronic throttle body is worn out and needs replaced. my vehicle isn't even 5 years old. this is very perplexing. the incidents are unsettling and should it happen on a busy roadway or while accelerating to make turns or pass a person is at a great risk of being injured or killed.

As i was breaking to turn left at a street light my car started to shake, wrench light came on, the vehicle lost power and stalled. i took it to jordan ford in san antonio, texas, they told me they could not duplicate the error message and noticed a carbon build up and recommended cleaning. almost $500 to pay for something that may not fix the problem. i noticed other complaints online about the same issue that happened to my vehicle and i'm very worried. i drive my children in this car. i would like to know why there aren't any recalls on this vehicle.

I am reaching out to you on an open issue with my 2012 ford explorer. case #cas7740243 with ford customer service. last month my wife was driving the vehicle on a well-traveled road with our 2 children. the vehicle went limp in traffic. fortunately she was able to forcefully steer the car to the side of the road before it went completely dead. this was an extremely dangerous situation given that the vehicle malfunctioned on a major road and there were multiple passengers involved. the local ford dealer, cross roads ford in springfield, il, identified that the vehicle’s electronic throttle body (“etb”) system failed and needed replaced. my first thought was that a 2012 ford explorer with less than 54,000 miles should not need a major repair like this. i conducted research and discovered that ford had previously admitted liability to etb system failures on multiple ford/mercury models of the similar time period. ford issued a special customer satisfaction program extending the etb warranty coverage and instructing franchised dealers to update the powertrain calibration to improve vehicle performance in the event that intermittent electrical connectivity of the throttle body motor contacts occurs. (see nhtsa action number pe13003). i was provided no explanation from cross roads or ford customer service as to why the etb system failures in those situations are different than the etb system failure here. ford's customer service told me that ford will do nothing to reimburse the costs it took us to fix this issue and that ford has no responsibility on this. not only do i feel ford owes reimbursement for the replacement costs, but this is a major safety issue that ford needs to review in light of ford’s preexisting admission to faulty etb systems. i am bringing this to your attention.

Exhaust gases enter the cabin when accelerating - smells like rotten eggs - to test theory placed house hold co2 alarm in vehicle cabin and drove up interstate - exceeding 3500rpm for 2-3 seconds - co2 alarm went off to indicate co2 present inside of cabin - conditions were - all windows closed all doors closed - air conditioner running. dealer states no reported occurrences of this from other explorer owners, said it could be a faulty co2 alarm - went to home depot - purchased new co2 alarm - tested in vehicle with windwos and doors closed - new co2 alarm also alerts to carbon monoxide (high levels). - co2 is 100% entering closed cabin.

Paint on hood is blistering - ford knows about this issue and issued a tsb in 2004 to fix this issue in 2004 why are we still having this issue on a 2012 vehicle - dealer says ford hq denied repair to hood paint since vehicle is out of 3 year 36,000 mile warranty - why is paint corroding on 3+ year old $34,000 vehicle? ford should take care of this issue since it is known and devalues the vehicle by many $k.

While driving on a 2-lane highway about 50 mhp, my 2012 ford explorer suddenly lost all speed and the gas pedal had no effect. after drifting over to the shoulder out of harms way, the power remained on and the dashboard said "check manual" with a wrench lit up. what happened was that it just lost all speed and the gas pedal had no effect until i turned off the power and re-started. this was the first incident. this happened twice more in the following month for a total of three times when the exact same thing happened, just lost all speed. finally ford service was able to diagnose it and said it was the throttle body. after doing research, it appears that other ford models have the same throttle body problem, loss of speed. this should have been a recall but someone dropped the ball, making it a part of the customer satisfaction program (csp 13n03) instead. this is obviously a very dangerous situation. ford service has been extremely difficult work with as they will not honor csp 13n03 for my explorer.

The left rear wheel began making a loud squealing sound (break pads) and when vehicle was at a complete stop, a large cloud of smoke was radiating off of the left rear wheel. the wheel was removed and the brake pads were stuck against the rotor. the brake pads are fairly new (replaced in february 2015). the caliper was removed and a retaining bolt was broken off/stuck inside of the caliper mount. the piston was pushed all the way inside of the caliper and would not extend out. the caliper was leaking brake fluid. the caliper could not be set back in place due to the faulty retaining bolt.

I was on a residential street driving 35 miles an hour when the car suddenly went less than 5 miles an hour immediately. i drove it off to a safe spot and parked it. luckily no one was behind med and i was not on an interstate or highway. no warning. it would not go over 5 miles an hour, even with the accelerator push all the way to the floor. i took it back to the dealer, where it was evaluated and i was told it needed an "update". now, i received a letter in the mail from ford and was told there is a recall on this car's power steering unit. i am afraid of now driving the car till the electrical /computer system is fully tested. how do i get an answer?

We our purchased this vehicle from a local ford dealer. overall we loved the vehicle until we realized this suv was not 4 wheel or all wheel it was just a regular vehicle. it has 20" inch wheels and we cannot find all season tires to fit this vehicle. it was the scariest winter of our lives!! we take small children to and from school(mennonite) and also have two mentally challenged folks who live with us and have to transport them to dr's appt from time to time. why on earth would a vehicle like this be ordered to be sold in this region equipped with the tires it had on it. its extremely dangerous in winter conditions. we're in our late 60's. and had to literally push this vehicle out of our driveway in nothing but a dusting of snow!!! any tire dealer we tried to get tires from were in total disbelief that its an suv type vehicle with no extra drive capabilities and they cannot find tires for the 20" rims.

Power cut off. (golden wrench of i dont know what's wrong came on) on 4 lane had to pull over to shoulder of road. cut off engine, restart, no light drove to ford shop monday and left car. shop to check out and get back with me. friday had to call and see if any news of whats wrong. told after 3 hr runaround, needs battery and throttle body $ 900.00 +- out of warranty consumer satisfaction program 13n03

While driving my for 2012 ford explorer ecoboost 2.0l, accelerating at approx 55mph up a hill, i lost power on several occasions starting on july 11th. i had to pull over and drive 10mph with hazards on. thankfully was able to pull over and not on the freeway. my explorer has been at the ford dealership now for three days and they still do not know what is wrong with it, and not able to fix it. i'm already going to have to pay 600 in labor so far and over a 100 for a rental and of course it's not under warranty. i beleive this is a huge safety issue, since you loose all power. you could end up in a terrible accident if this happens on the freeway.

Driving to work at the normal speed limit 6:30 am in light traffic. ambient temperature was 65 degrees in dry conditions. suddenly felt like the transmission had been placed in neutral. engine continued to run but no power to the transmission. was able to let the car coast until i could turn on to a side street and stop. an error condition displayed "awd off" and then a wrench icon appeared. i placed the transmission in park and turned off the engine. restarted the engine and the car resumed normal driving conditions. took the car the next day to the ford dealership. was told that no error code was captured so they could not do anything. i asked how it was that the computer could display the "awd off" message and the wrench icon without a code being stored. no response. was told to leave car running next time, call a tow truck and then they could get the code. of course, i am not always close to the dealership, it could happen after they closed or on a weekend. noted that in march 2014 ford settled a complaint on "throttle body" problems in escape, fusion, etc, that had a similar description. explorer was not included in that settlement. *tr

Had to have rear both rear calipers, rotors, and brake pads replaced because calipers were hanging up causing the brakes to drag. i also noticed smoke, could feel heat, and smell hot metal coming from right rear wheel on or around 6/14/15. i also noticed the same on 6/26/15. dealership where i had vehicle repaired said that the left rear brakes pads were worn out, the right rear pads were 2mm from being worn out. also both rotors were warped and discolored. vehicle has advancetrac system as standard equipment, because of heat and dragging brakes, the service advancetrac light would come on when the above situation occured. cost of replacement calipers from ford was covered under the extended warranty purchased at time of vehicle purchase. the rotors, pads, and installation costs totaled $412.93.

Power steering failed on interstate. driver drove to a safe place. i met them and drove the car to a place until it could be driven to a dealership. when i tried to drive it to the dealership, vehicle would not steer at all. i called a tow truck. dealership told me the steering gear needed replaced. they said it wasn't covered under the recall. i called ford customer service and they said the recall had been performed and was closed, therefore the steering gear was not covered. when they performed the software upgrade for the steering i had not had a problem with the steering. i believe ford agreed to the recall and provided the software upgrade to avoid fixing the real problem, the steering gear. if the steering had completely locked up on my wife, she could have been involved in a violent accident at 70 mph. i think the investigation should be reopened on the steering failure, due to the fact people could be injured or killed in an accident and because i believe ford chose to make the least costly repair to avoid correcting the problem. i am not the only person that has had this problem. i have seen multiple posts where ford did the same thing to other owners with this problem. it is obvious the cost difference between a software "fix" and the steering gear replacement at a cost of over $1,500.00 would be the desired fix for ford. the safety fix would be replacement of the steering gear. i believe you should investigate any accidents that may have occurred due to this defect and may not have been investigated due to extensive front end damage. i could not steer the vehicle at all, when i wanted to drive it to the dealer. this was witnessed by relatives and the tow truck driver. i don't think ford should be able to offer a "software fix" to a problem that is not fixed by the software upgrade. thank you for all you do. *tr

On 6/23/2015 my wife brought her 2012 ford explorer to me stating it was very hard to steer. by the time i left work at 6pm, the hixson ford dealership was closed. the next morning, while on the way to the ford dealership and while going around a long curve on hwy 546, the steering wheel totally locked up causing me to be within inches of hitting an on-coming car in the curve. jerking the wheel in the opposite direction that i was turning in the curve and then back unlocked it and enabled me to get back in my lane. ford states that they had already "reprogrammed the pscm power steering control module" last july so therefore the "recall" for this issue (#14s06) has already been cleared for this particular vehicle. whether ford already reprogrammed the pscm or not, the issue which the recall was issued "power steering may lock up" has happened. my position is that "reprogramming" or “updating the software” is not going to fix a faulty sensor which is a part of the steering gear so the "alternative" recall fix should have been completed in the first place which is "replacing the steering gear". hixson wants $1,795 to replace the electronic steering gear. the faulty sensor cannot be replaced because it's apparently built into the steering gear. this recall issue should be paid for by ford who has already admitted to a faulty sensor. i’m now on my 6th day of a rental car.

I first encountered the problem on monday june 08, 2015 as i was driving to work at the traffic light all of a sudden the steering was really hard to steer as i was trying to make a left turn i had to use all of might to make the turn very scary. i was able to drive my car home after work that night, everything okay till wednesday, june 10, 2015 @ 7-8am, driving to drop my kids off to school and work, as i was a making a left turn it happened again, but worst it was busier day, 2 error message came on about steering assist and trac advance message, and 2 lights came on dashboard with a car and 2 wavy lines (road) 2nd picture was the same with the word off. i had to use all my might and drive slow to turn into the school turned the car off and on hoping lights will go off, still the same call my boss let her my car issues and that im running late. i called ford service dept, i was told to the bring car in immediately not safe to drive but it will cost me to tow car. i drove car in that night myself, thursday pick up rental, friday -06/12/15, i received a call from ford saying part will cost me 1500.00- 2000.00, not including labor. outrageous its a electrical problem ford should fix it free, but no per rep, let him know what i want to do on monday rental will be on my own after that. wow, first my rental i have to pay for upgrade it was not same size as my vehicle, family of 6(including my blind, disabled wheelchair father) who we care for, ford still wont cover for a car same size as my car. i was told i need to take care of the difference for rental upgrade if i want a bigger car. so, ive decided i dont have that kind of money so i will pick my car up on monday, june 15, 2015 and hope and pray that i wont get into an accident because ford will not work me. my option is to trade my car in for another car and spend more money. very disappointed in ford!!!!!

On my way to work the service power steering light came on in my 2012 ford explorer. when i got work i called the ford dealer they said bring the vehicle in the steering could go out. later the same day i took it to the dealer and the steering went out in the 2.5 mile trip to get to there. i was going very slow and managed to maintain control of the car, it was difficult and scary, no hydraulics any more these systems are all electronic. the dealer has had the vehicle for a week and has not been able to recreate or diagnosis what's wrong and therefore how to fix it. ford has been absolutely no help will not return phone calls, nothing. so today they stop the car rental coverage and shove an undiagnosed safely issue back on me. i really do not want to drive this vehicle not knowing if the steering might go out at any time. i found on the internet there have been steering recalls on this vehicle make, model and year, but apparently only those assembled in chicago. ford has not issued a recall on this vehicle.

I am unable to enter the date of 5/29/2015 which was the date this occurred. the car was driving good and i stopped to shop. i came back to the car, cranked the car and immediately received the message of power assist failure. i tried to back up and realized that i had no power steering. i was able to get to a parking spot and checked the service manual. i followed the instructions and hoped that the power steering would reset as was told in the owner's manual. i was able to drive slowly and get home. today i took my car to hixson ford, monroe, la and had it checked. at this point i was receiving an additional error messages related to traction. also, my signal lights would not work. i had read last night that there were some recalls on this problem related to ford explorers. the technician checked my car and told me we would have to replace the steering shaft/gears for $1,794.00. i had to leave my car at the dealership because it is not driveable. i would like for you to check and see if this is an on-going problem for cars with vin numbers not included in the recall. i was told the recall was based on where the car was manufactured. it appears to me that ford has consistently had a problem with the power assist failure on 2012 ford explorers.

I went to crank my car and when i did i immediately received a power steer fail assist notice. my car had no power steering. i was able to slowly drive to a parking space and review my owner's manual. i let the car set for 10 seconds and then cranked again in hopes that it would reset. it didn't. i was able to drive home and park the car. this morning i took the car to hixson ford in monroe, la. by that time i had received a traction error on the dashboard and also was unable to use my signal light. i was told all of this was in relation to the power steering and the need to replace the steering column for a price of $1794.00. it appears that ford is very aware of the problems of the power steering failure. why hasn't there been a larger recall? my car is not one of the 2012 models that was recalled. just out of warranty and then this. i think further investigation is needed in the problems with the power steer failure.

Started car and power steering assist failure warning came on. you could not steer at all. had to turn car off and on a couple times to get computer to reset. cars 3 yrs old just out of warranty and ford won't cover it even though steering could lock up as your driving.

I parked the vehicle to go into a store. when i returned and started the vehicle. i had the power assist fault and service track management errors show on the panel. i had to drive the car home without power steering. i took the car in for service yesterday and was told that it needed a steering gear. i was under the impression that this would be part of the power steering recall issued last year, however that is not the case. i was told by the service tech that he tried to contact ford to see if they would work with me on this and they stated there was nothing they could do. so i brought the car home without repair or new parts ordered due to the costliness of this issue. it appears that i am not the only one having this potentially dangerous issue with their vehicle. at this point, i am quite disappointed with ford!!

I received a recall notice a while ago and took my car in right away for the software fix. not long after that, i started having problems where the power steering intermittently didn't seem to be working. 2 weeks ago i took it to the dealer to be checked. they said they found no problem. 7 days later i got in my car and immediately got a power steering assist fault error on the dashboard and couldn't turn the steering wheel. i had it towed to the dealership but once it was there, the power steering was working fine. now, 5 days later, my car is still there and the only thing they keep telling me is that they have not been able to replicate the problem so they can't do anything. i sent the service rep a link to multiple websites where many people have had this exact same problem which can only be repaired by replacing the steering gear assembly but they made it clear that they won't fix it until they see it happen for themselves even though they retrieved the error code from the diagnostics in the car. i contacted a ford rep directly and got an email message from the regional rep who also said that if the dealership cannot replicate the problem there is no repair. so, unless it happens again while they have it i'll have to just drive it and hope that when it does happen again it isn't in a situation that injures me or a member of my family. also, if it does happen again while i'm driving but doesn't go out permanently it doesn't matter because they'll only fix it if it happens to them no matter what codes are present in the system. so it appears that intermittent loss of power steering is ok for ford since they'll only repair it if they experience it no matter what the car diagnostics say! how many ford owners are on the road now just waiting for their power steering to go completely out? how is this a safe policy? i shouldn't be afraid to drive my car!!! *tr

I was driving back from the mall on a single lane highway at 55 mph with the whole family. all of the sudden the vehicle just quit. i tried to restart the vehicle while it was gliding without power, but it would not start. i had to pull over to the side of the road until the car stopped by itself. while the car was gliding to a stop, there was no steering brakes or anything available, since the engine had cut off automatically. luckily i did not get hit by anyone. i finally pulled over, restarted the car and drove again. in a couple of minutes the car stalled again with no controls. this happened about 4 times within a space of 15 miles. i took it to the ford dealership the next day and had to spend $1000 fixing it, which they blamed on the throttle activation or body. this could have resulted in a fatal situation, especially because the vehicle had no controls when it stalled. i believe there has been the same issue with other fords and lincoln vehicles on the web. this should be considered a serious safety issue, which should be fixed as soon as possible. this could happen again to someone and result in serious injury. i feel like ford should be responsible for the fix to ensure public safety. *tr

Traveled to florida from pennsylvania for vacation. window on passenger side developed line of small bubbles vertically while sitting in hotel parking lot. windshield then cracked in middle in a "z" formation. its a rather large crack and makes it difficult to see out front window. i believe the window is defective like the ford e series windshields. i contacted ford but as usual they would not accept responsibility. this car has been recalled twice already. *tr

On december 27th 2014 i purchased a used 2012 ford explorer with 42,990 miles on it. since then we have noticed under accelerating, you can smell the exhaust fumes in the cabin. any harder than 50% acceleration and with the rear ac on, it is an almost instant smell. after a few roads trips it is predictable and we try to avoid repeating the issue. it has not been to our lcal dealer because they "haven't heard" of this issue before (called 2 different dealers). i can not afford to be without the car, pay for a rental car, my $100 extended warranty deductible, and get the, "we don't know what the issue can be from." i have heard and read allot of semi fixes, but wish i could get a strait answer before taking to the dealer first. *tr

In a parking lot on a friday dec.19 at 6am, the steering assist dash warning light came on, and in same instance, steering locked up. i was unable to steer, but was able to bring my 2012 ford explorer limited to a stop. restarting the car enabled steering. i notified my spouse who called dealership and arranged for a service visit the next monday. dealer honored recall ( 14s06 electric power steering ) for issue by flashing the software. my 2012 ford explorer was presented to me as repaired & fixed and ready to drive in a safe manner. same event occurred jan. 8 at 8pm in a parking lot. i took my explorer to same dealer the next morning. the dealer called and stated the rack & pinion and several steering modules required replacement. dealer then stated you only get one (1) ford recall service for an event and any further work would not be covered by ford motor company. after the first repair attempt which was not a solution, all costs ($1700-$2300 for rack & pinion/associated parts contrasted to a virtually no cost software update done under the recall as a potential fix(thus using up your recall and closing your case, when the recall addresses the parts failure) are borne by the vehicle owner even if it still a recall event. dealer did state they would check what ford would do since the second event occurred 2 weeks and 600 miles later. basically, ford has developed a policy to circumvent covering the cost of a mandated safety recall. an internet search shows this is a business-as-usual practice for ford for this steering lock up recall. bottom line - ford is keeping unsafe vehicles, which have a recall notice, on the road as people who don't have the funds or stamina to fight ford, leave the ford dealer service department with the same unrepaired safety defect present. *tr

I went to unlock my vehicle and the system did not respond to unlock my doors. i unlocked my doors manually and there was no lighting indicator throughout the vehicle. i placed my key in the ignition and there was still no power. i have less than 20,000 miles on my vehicle and barely use it. how can a vehicle less than two years old just stop working altogether? this is my only source of transportation and now i will have to put out additional funding just to get it to a place where it can be checked out. what is going on with ford vehicles? i am really frustrated!!! *tr

We have 74000 miles on our 2012 ford explorer. i was doing the 6000 mile service, change oil and filter, rotate tires, check fluids, brake inspection, and do inspect other areas. i was in the process torqueing the lug nuts after the tire rotation. i use a craftsman torque 1/2" drive ratchet for this. on the driver side front and rear wheel 1 out of the 5 wheel studs would not torque too the 100 ft. pounds. the studs on each wheel stretch and are ready to break. why would ford use inferior medal in something so important. we recently owned a 2001 dodge durango and bought it new. we had over 200,000 miles on this vehicle and i never had this problem. and to replace these ford didn't allow enough room. you have to remove the wheel hub and bearing. which i tried after removing the 4 bolts and axle nut. it would not come out. i believe it's because of the 2 different medals. the aluminum housing and the steel bearing hub was find when it's new but give time in the elements and corrosion sets in. i have no other choice but take it back to ford dealer for the repairs. i don't trust the other wheel studs and want all replace for safety concerns. please help on this problem. i believe the medal is to soft for wheel studs. thank you. *js

While i was driving my 2012 ford explorer xlt, it lost all power for the 4th time. when i pressed the throttle there was no response. indicator lights said awd off and displayed a wrench icon. i coasted to the side of the road. when this happened the first three times i turned the car off, restarted it and all was fine for a few minutes, before this happened again. this is quite a dangerous situation to be in. i have also seen several complaints of the same problem from several other ford and lincoln owners. i believe this is a serious safety issue, since stalling in the middle of anywhere is not safe and can lead to accidents without warning. also my check engine light is now light and i will be taking it to the ford dealer to get it fixed. it is going to cost me an arm and leg, but hopefully it ends up being a safety recall and ford reimburses down the line. *tr

Investigation of intermittent "service engine" light eventually led to a determination of a faulty evap purge valve pulling fuel into the evap canister. technician said he would not drive the car, as this is a fuel leak and unsafe condition. dealer acknowledged safety issue, cites 1st time this has been seen, and not covered by any extended warranty or maintenance program. paperwork provided cites "a faulty evap purge valve can cause excessive engine vacuum to be placed on fuel tank, drawing fuel/air from the fuel tank through the evap system and into engine. this can cause drivability concerns as well as rich/lean concern." *tr

After a month of owning the 2012 ford explorer we noticed a very foul exhaust smell from inside the cabin of the explorer. we would smell the odor under acceleration, especially when rpms reached 3,000 plus. this particular odor smell under the above conditions have been observed ever since. we did not think anything of the smell until we began researching it recently and came across several sources indicating this could be harmful to our health. *tr

We own a 2012 ford explorer xlt and are very pleased with it overall. however, we have recently discovered that our interior door panel on both the driver and passenger sides is splitting on the vinyl seam just below the arm rest. our vehicle currently has 55k on it for mileage, so any hope of this being covered under warranty is gone. i have contacted an upholstery repair service and they stated that it cannot be repaired because it is vinyl, but will instead need to be replaced. i recently got an estimate and for parts and labor it would cost us almost $600 to repair both sides. because it is happening in the exact same location on both interior doors, i feel that this is faulty design and should be subject to recall. *tr

The throttle box has gone bad. the car stalls randomly when taking off from a start and requires a new throttle body at only 47k miles. this is part of the powertrain, but not covered by the warranty. ford had lots of problems with throttle bodies in earlier models and it seems they haven't fixed it yet. *tr

I was driving approx. 35mph and all of a sudden the wrench light on the engine came on i lost all power to the accelerator. i had to coast to stop, turn off the vehicle, start it back up and proceed. it has happened 4 more times since the original date. one of those times was when i was crossing an intersection and was almost broadsided. this is very dangerous and is happening with no warning or pattern. i have looked online and it seems to have happened with many ford explorer owners. i am reading it has to do with the powertrain control module. *tr

We have a 2012 ford explorer with 46,000 miles at this time. on august 30, 2014, we were driving about 35 mph when the car lost all power, and the powertrain/wrench light came on in the display. the check engine light did not come on. i pulled to the side of the road where the car was shaking like it wanted to stall. i turned the car off and back on, and it started up fine, and the wrench light went off. we drove another 100 miles when it did the same thing again on september 1 going about 50 mph. i took it to the local shop who noticed that the voltage was dropping from 14 volts down to 12volts and shutting down the computers (so they said). they changed out the alternator- $560. everything was fine until september 20 when the car did the same thing twice again, about 10 minutes apart, going 70 mph (car lost power, wrench light on, had to pull over and restart). i took it to the closest ford dealer within 2 days; they drove the car 55 miles and could not duplicate the problem because it is intermittent. there were no error codes present. the check engine light never came on. they said to come get the car and keep driving it. internet research indicates that this is likely a throttle body (etb) malfunction. i called the ford dealer where we bought the car (not where it was now) and described the problem to a service manager with 19 years experience. he said it was likely the throttle body since the car would restart. he said only 2 things trigger the wrench light- the transmission and the throttle body. since my wife and daughter ride in this car, i decided to have the throttle body replaced at my expense on september 24 - $470. continuing to drive the car as ford suggested, with an intermittent cut-off problem, was not an option for me so i decided to make an educated guess/diagnosis and throw parts at it and see. *tr

The power steering pump quit working 2 times on my mothers suv. vehicle was taken to ford twice because they did not fix it the first time. saw recall but explorer was not in the list. i am a mechanical engineer and was driving the vehicle on both occurrences. it is my ethical responsibility to report this issue. i also work in automotive field and i know this was a failure of the power steering. i do not want my mother or any individual hurt due to lack of investigation. i expect a response from your organization. the dealership can pull up all info, a rental was provided. i was barely able to manage the vehicle to the side of the road, a weaker driver, physically, would have had an accident. *tr

My car is less than 3 years old. at the time of the first incident, i was driving about 25 mph and my car just suddenly stalled. i saw an "awd off" message on my dash. i tried to accelerate to pull over to the side of the road, and there was no response to the foot peddle. i hit the brakes and killed the engine. i was able to restart the car and continue on to work. i just assumed that i had someone hit the gear into that mode. but it happened a 2nd and then a 3rd time that same week. i brought the car in to the dealership around the middle of august. before i brought the car, i searched the internet for other related complaints from ford owners. i found a site at www.cargurus.com and found out that there are many other ford owners with the same complaint. one owner said that his dealership replaced the "throttle body assembly" and he has never had that problem again. i brought this information to my dealership and i paid them $99.00 for this service call. they were not able to find out what was wrong, but they did do some sort of service notice that i had not yet done on my car. they hoped it would take care of the problem and it did for about a month. but this week, it happened 5 more times. yesterday was the first time that it happened twice within a few minutes. this time the check engine light came on. i have the car at the dealership right now and i am hoping that they will find the throttle body assembly is the issue. if not, then i am concerned that this will happen again and that i may be rear ended on the interstate while i am trying to coast to the side of the road. ford must know that this is a problem. there are too many complaints about the "awd off" error code. i do not intend to pay for this repair!! my car is out of warranty now. i don't think that i should be paying for any car/engine repairs on such a young vehicle. *tr

While driving at a constant speed of aprox. 35 mph on a city street, the vehicle suddenly and dramatically lost speed. the accelerator pedal / motor speed ceased responding and the engine started to run very roughly. the car went into "idle" and i was forced to stop in the middle of the road. the event was completely unexpected. i had no warning and not enough power to get off the road. an orange "wrench" warning light appeared on the dashboard. i turned off the vehicle and was able to restart with normal operation. i immediately had the car towed to the dealership service department where they replaced the left valve cover. i drove the car with no problems until 14 days later when the same problem re-occurred. this sudden and unexpected loss of vehicle control seems to be a significant safety concern. god help me if this happens while i'm on the freeway... *tr

Safety recall notice 14s06/nhtsa recall 14v-286 we received this recall notice in the mail from fmc. knowing we had a trip coming up, i immediately took the vehicle in to ken garff ford in utah for servicing and to have the recall corrected. they supposedly fixed the issue so i went on my way. i drove a single gas tanks worth (appx 400 miles) and then everything went to hell. power steering failed, traction control failed, terrain management failed. this is the exact problem for which ford issued the recall in the first place. the ford dealership is now telling me that they completely fixed the problem and it is my fault that these systems failed. they want me to believe an elaborate tale about how i have driven my explorer 72000 miles without a problem and suddenly, after the recall gets fixed, i then have that exact problem? that is a sneaky lie that might work on someone more passive. when the vehicle failed we were driving with our family on a vacation and this incident stranded us in meridian, idaho, where our vehicle currently sits 6 weeks later. it seems to me that when a safety recall is issued and "fixed" it shouldn't create a safety issue for the consumer anymore, which is exactly what this problem caused. it also seems to me that it is awfully convenient for fmc that my car broke immediately after it was "fixed". so now i am liable for the repairs. how nice for fmc. meanwhile, it took fmc 6 weeks to get the part to the dealership in idaho so they could "fix" the issue. we'll see how long it holds up this time. i am still waiting to get my car back. *tr

Ford recently declined to repair the bubbling paint on the hood of my 2012 ford explorer on the basis it is out-of-warranty due to mileage. based on my research, ford has had corrosion issues for some time but has failed to correct the issue.

The air bag light is on and the ford dealer says that the issue is related to the connections that are under the seats. the connections need to be cleaned and reattached. they indicated that it was caused by cookie crumbs, juice, etc. probably from children. i indicated that the vehicle is a 2012 and that cookies, etc. should not be able to cause a safety device as important as an air bag from not working. i believe that this issue should be investigated as if cookie crumbs, etc. can cause air bags to fail then there should be an immediate recall to address the issue. *tr

Dash reports tms fault, then awd off successively. then car becomes unresponsive to the accelerator and slows down rapidly. the dash also displays a service indicator "wrench." dealer reports vehicle throws code p2112, throttle body stuck closed. i believe the scope of ford csp 13n03 in response to nhtsa action number pe13003 needs to be expanded or many more drivers will be stuck in ford vehicles that all but shut down on the interstate during a throttle body failure. *tr

I am experiencing an odor of carbon monoxide inside the car. i live in el salvador central america and have found in the internet that there is a recall for this problem the agency in my country does not responsabilize on this i have small children and we cant be smelling this exhaust fumens and strange odors inside our car. *tr

I was on vacation and i started to get a very loud grinding noise from the rear brakes every time i started i had to put the brakes on. i decided to end the vacation early and headed home. before i got home i had to stop at a ford dealer about 300 miles from home. the guy at the dealer test drove the car and then inspected the brakes. he told me the rear brakes pads and rotors had to be replaced because they were worn to metal on metal. i had them fix the rear brakes for $324.13. he lubed the calipers and since then i have had no problem. i think the brakes should last longer than 30,550 mile on a $46,000 vehicle. *tr

I was stopped and the car was idling in drive (i was braking) when the car beeped and displayed two warnings, one about power assist failure or off and the other about advancetrac service (i don't remember the exact wording of the errors). the power steering was no longer working in the car. i put the car in park and turned it off and on again. after it turned on it still said the errors but i was able to move the steering wheel, and when i put it in drive and moved up a bit the errors also went away. i called the dealership and they were able to tell me there is an active recall but that they didn't know anything on how to fix it what it was, or any type of remedy or reassurance. they said the soonest they could take the vehicle to look at it was a week away. *tr

Received recall letter from ford to get my vehicle in immediately. called sacramento downtown ford and spoke with david. david said "sorry, can't help you right now as they have not sent us the parts or the software". he added, "call back in a couple of weeks". i was shocked that nothing was offered. website even states may cause inability to steer your car and letter even states may cause an accident. but they can't help me right now? so disappointed in ford! if something happens to me or my family ford will pay.

I was driving on rt44 in ma when i noticed oncoming drivers yelling at me. i thought i was doing something wrong and when i came to a stop light, the driver in front of me got out of his car and yelled that my 2012 ford explored had flames coming from the bottom of the vehicle. i immediately evacuated the car with my wife and children and my car was indeed on fire. i happened to have a fire extinguisher with me and was able to put out the fire. i was in front of a ford dealer when this happened and they came out to inspect the car and i was told the heat shield was ignited from touching the exhaust. they removed the plate and you can see the burnt damage (i have pics). this situation could have turned fatal and they said they will put a new one on. this should not be able to catch fire and if it wasn't for other drivers i don't know how this could of ended. my wife and 3 year old son are now terrified to ride in the explorer. this needs to be investigated immediately. *js

Car hesitates after turns and then again when accelerating and acts like it doesn't have enough power. car had to be towed on a separate incident in 2013 after losing all power during a turn; the throttle body - air intake had to be replaced at 24,457 miles. the problem is ongoing, something is wrong with the car. every time i take it in to be checked, i get the same response: cannot not recreate the concern, ran through oasis and no problem found. i am over ford! there was a customer satisfaction program (aka recall without the press involved) (program number 12b36) in april of 2012 that had to reprogram the vehicle's pcm (powertrain control module). this was due to the fact that "inoperative engine cooling fans could lead to high engine temperature gauge readings and reduced air conditioning performance. continued operation of the vehicle could result in illumination of the malfunction indicator light (mil) and eventually cause the engine to automatically enter derate (reduced power) mode." this was "fixed" 14 months before the car was towed.... *tr

Driving to work on june 25, 2013 (20,420 miles) on the highway going 55 mph when a "power steering assist" fault code popped onto the screen and with very limited steering capabilities was able to pull off of the highway, turn off the engine for 10 minutes and the error corrected itself. on may 9, 2014 (30,513 miles), after coming off a winding road turned onto a straight lane, power steering assist fault code popped up again, was able to drive it home. on may 23, 2014 (31,002 miles), got into my parked vehicle turned on engine and the power steering assist code popped up and i wasn't able to turn the wheel at all, had to turn off the engine and restart it again. when the first incident happened on june 25, i contact my local dealership and i was instructed "if it happens again, bring in your vehicle." for the second incident, i took my vehicle to the dealership and because there was no fault code showing at that time, they couldn't find anything wrong and was told "if it happens again, don't turn off your engine and drive straight to the nearest dealership so they can retrieve the codes." my main concern is not being to control the vehicle if it happens again and causing an accident. *tr

On three different occasions within the last month the power steering fault assist has gone off. twice while driving and once when first staring the vehicle. i took it to the shop and they drove it for a few days but can't fix the problem unless something is recalled or the problem happens while they have the vehicle. this is to dangerous of an issue to happen while driving when my two small children are in the car. *tr

Ford explorer 2012 with vibration and grinding sound in the steering column and loss of all steering. initially infrequent however after two years the occurrence is common at all speeds and road conditions. i have experienced sudden and temporary loss of all steering on the interstate highways. i took my vehicle to three separate ford dealers four times for this problem. i was told by the service adviser there were no diagnostic errors and the problem could not be replicated in a test drive by the service technician. when i returned to my local ford dealer in may, 2014 i brought website reports of other drivers experiencing steering gear failure in their 2011 and 2012 ford explorers. this vehicle is currently waiting at the ford dealer (over two weeks) for replacement parts. *tr

In september 2013, i was driving down a neighborhood road at about 15-20 mph when a wrench symbol appeared on the screen and the vehicle began slowing to a stop. the gas would not work during this time and i turned off the engine. it did restart without problems, but did it again a little later. i took it in to my local ford dealership, where i leased the car from. they looked at it and said they couldn't find anything wrong, but could not get codes because the engine had been turned off. i was told to bring it back if it happened again. it happened 2 more times in october. both times were at night over a weekend when the dealership was closed. again, they looked at it and said they couldn't find anything wrong, but reset the "system" and i was told to bring it in if it happened again. no problems until the night of may 3, 2013. i was driving outside of mckinney, tx, with my cruise set at 74 when it happened again. this really scared me because i had just come off of i-75 where they are doing construction and there are concrete walls on either side of two lanes with no shoulder! since you cannot control the speed, and the only way to make the car work is to turn the engine off, wait a few minutes, then restart it, i have no doubt that we (myself and 2 children) would have been in an accident. it is a very busy area with speeds up to 75 mph and lots of semi-trucks. i spoke to the service manager and gm of paris ford who both agreed to a loaner car until mine could be fixed, and took it in for the third time. apparently, the only loaner car they had was unavailable, so i could take my car back and drive it until they had a loaner. we decided that was enough. i didn't feel safe driving it and did not want to take a chance of anything happening to myself or our children. we turned it in the dealership and after paying $251, it is now back with them. this car is dangerous! *tr

I brought my car to ford for service. i noticed that the paint on the hood was bubbling. i showed it to the service writer. he reported it to ford. they said there is nothing they will do for it. *tr

On friday april 18, 2014 my wife an i prestarted the car to go to dinner, after only 2 minutes the car shut of. upon review of the issue the low oil pressure light came on, the stability control light came on, as well as he service engine soon light. the mileage at the incident was approx 45,500 but the complaint says 44,000 because this is the second time it has done this, and the first time for the stability control light to illuminate. after dinner we came home and attempted to restart the vehicle, everything seemed normal, it started it drove, but subsequently we had it towed to ford, so they could address the problem. *tr

This is the second incident with the steering assembly. in august of 2012 my power steering failed and the steering assembly was replaced after a two month wait for parts. (first clue there was a serious problem) it was repaired and 6 months later it has failed again. i am a police officer and we have purchased ford explorers as patrol vehicle. i have written a letter to the police association with my concerns about officer safety issue. when is nhtsa going to step up to the plate and recognize the serious safety issues with this flaw. this problem could have been buried years ago, but with social media the problem is exposed. your credibility as an investigative body is certainly at question. the fact recalls were forced on toyota and you blatantly ignore the issues with ford is an integrity issue with your abilities to be impartial. my neighbors lost a 4 year old son in the old chrysler mini van issues with the rear latch problem. it was uncovered that chrysler was aware of this problem and was exposed by the media. dealing with ford head office gives me the impression that they are not concerned about customer safety or my concerns. i wonder how they were so empowered. there are many articles since 2012 about nhtsa investigating this issue. influenced by corporate power or an inept investigative body. i think both. *tr

On monday 10march2014, my 2012 ford explorer started and immediately stalled out, when i look at the dash it had said it had low oil pressure. the vehicle was towed to cavalier ford in chesapeake, va where it has been determined that the high pressure fuel line and high pressure fuel pump have to be replaced. during further trouble shooting it was discovered that henderson ford in bay st. louis, ms had installed a fuel injector into the engine without properly ensuring the cleanliness of either the injector or the point of insertion. it has been determined by cavalier ford that henderson ford improperly installed a replacement part, and allowed me to drive over 1,000 miles with this problematic part in place! *tr

Slush on the windshield pulled the wiper from the wiper arm on the passenger side making me pull over on a busy street. the manufactured arm is the cheapest and most unreliable arm i've ever seen. i checked with other 2012 ford explorers and they have the same arm. the 2013 and 2014 have different style arms that hold the wiper on securely. i'm going back to the dealer to see if they can put different arms on but this definitely is a safety issue. just by raising the wiper arm up and grabbing the bottom of the blade the wiper snaps off. i was lucky not to be on the interstate hwy when this happened. *tr

On monday march 10, 2014 i started the my 2012 ford explorer and drove it to work approximately 2 miles and shut it off, after 25 minutes i returned to the vehicle and attempted to start it. the vehicle started and then immediately shut off and said low oil pressure, i proceeded to remove the key and open the hood. i checked the oil and all was within range, no issue immediately noted, i closed the hood and attempted to restart the car. upon the attempted restart the car took a substantial amount of time to finally turn over, i immediately shut the car off and figured it needed to refresh itself and waited a moment. after restarting on the third try i then attempted to drive it all indicators had turned off. while driving the vehicle it refused to accelerate over 35mph, i immediately reported the issue to ford and the vehicle had to be towed to cavalier ford in greenbrier, va. *tr

On dec. 2, 2013 i was stopped on the side of the road with a slight decline at a school bus stop. i put the vehicle in park (while still on) and got out of the car to retrieve a forgotten item from the back for one of the children (as i have done numerous times before without incident). when i exited the vehicle, it started to roll forward (while still in park). it rolled off of the road, down an embankment, into a ditch/ravine, crashed into a tree and rolled onto the driver's side, coming to rest at an approximate 45 degree angle. my 20-month-old child was in the car at the time and was seated on the side of the car that was in contact with the ground when the car crashed. after retrieving the child (physically unharmed) from the car with help from a passerby, i noticed the car was still running. the passerby and i went down to turn the car off and remove the keys, at which point it was verified that the car was in fact still shifted into the park position. the tow truck company also verified that the car was in park when they arrived. speed of the vehicle at the time of impact is unknown, as it started from a stop and increased in speed as it continued to roll forward and down the embankment. post crash, the 20-month-old was physically fine, but expressed significant emotional anxiety when being placed in his other car seat for subsequent car rides. side airbags on both sides of the car deployed, front did not (presumably because no one was seated in the front of the vehicle). once the engine was turned off and the keys were removed, the horn began honking (presumably a built in safety feature). once removed from the crash site (time to remove: 2.5 hours using 2 different tow trucks), the car was not drivable and after 21 days the car was determined to be a total loss. *tr

This is a continual problem report one 8/10/13 19,000 miles: power steering light came on and power steering went out while driving vehicle <15 mph and back ceiling light came on and wouldn't go out. ford: 8/13/2013 said ceiling light shortened out battery and caused power steering to go out - ordered light bulb came back in 3 days to replace light bulb - they said power steering was fixed. report two 9/23/13 23,891 miles: power steering light came on while parked. ford: did diagnostic said the issue was most likely wiring and said issue was fixed and i left with car report three 10/02/13 24,280 miles: power steering light came on dashboard and power steering went out while driving on a highway 65 mph, pulled off hwy. reported incident to ford. ford: ran diagnostic, said issue was motherboard. ordered part and i returned in a few days to replace computer board. told issue was resolved and left with my car. report four 10/31/2013 25,295 miles: power steering yellow light came on dashboard as i started vehicle in parking lot. power steering had not gone out only had warning light showing. i drove a few minutes home without the steering going out. i started car about an hour later in garage and power steering was completely out. bright red lights on dashboard. warning light said something to the tune of 'report power steering immediately". ford: kept car for 4 full days while we drove rental and was told they have no solution and ford regional's engineers supposedly said 'this is not an issue they have seen before' (even though there are almost 100 reports on the nhtsa website about this exact issue) and to report if happens again. report five 11/28/13 27,000 miles: power steering went out while starting vehicle in garage dashboard light up with red warning signs. have to wait until after holiday to report to service. *tr

Steering suddenly became extremely hard and stiff to the point where i could not make a turn of more than 10% at any speed. luckily i was only going 25mph at the time of the incident so i was able to gradually guide the car to the side of the road bringing it to a full stop. i tried resetting the "error condition" by restarting the car, but the steering became only marginally better. i was however able to drive the car down the side street at 5-10mph to my house which was a few short blocks away. since the car was undrivable, i had it towed to all american ford in paramus nj, for service. where they claimed that they have only heard of one or two cases such as mine. i directed them to this site to help them with their research, which they of course they were not interested in. *tr

While driving on the highway steering wheel became stiff and a message appeared "power steering assist failed". vehicle was very hard to steer but i managed to turn on flashers, reduce speed and steer safely to the side of the road. i turned the vehicle off and called for assistance. while waiting for help i restarted the vehicle to try to maneuver to a safer roadside position. at that time the power steering seemed to be working again so i drove carefully home. i then visited the ford dealership where no error codes or error history was found and they found no problem and sent me on my way. *tr

I was driving the vehicle down the highway when the steering went stiff and several lights on the dash came on. i immediately slowed down and struggled to steer the vehicle of the side of the road. once to the side of the road, i called the dealer they acknowledged this a common problem in the new explorers and that if i turned the vehicle off and restarted it would reset the system and to bring it to dealer immediately. i arrived at the dealer (after it happened a second time) where they informed i would need a new rack and pinion. i don't mind paying for the replacement part but this is a huge safety issue. if i had been going through a turn at those speeds, my kids and i would have been killed. if the dealer and ford know there is a problem why hasn't there been a recall. do we have to wait until someone dies? *tr

We purchased our vehicle in august 2011. in june of 2013 the power steering gave out. we dropped it off at our local ford dealership on june 18. two days later the mechanic informs me that they could not figure out what was wrong and had to call ford motor company directly. they informed the mechanic that our vehicle's power steering rack (epas) needed to be replaced and it is not covered under the powertrain warranty. they charged us nearly $2000 to fix the car. which was approx. 5% of the total cost of the car. the car was under 2 years old and only 53k miles. we feel ripped off and used. we are loyal ford customers with this being our 3rd ford in 10 years. we feel it should be covered under either a powertrain or manufacturers warranty. *tr

I bought my 2012 ford explorer in january 2012, and had no problems for several months. recently, when starting the vehicle the "power steering assist fault" warning started coming on. after turning off the ignition and re-starting the engine, the warning went away and i regained power steering. about 6 days ago, i drove 15 miles to work, and the same "power steering assist fault" warning came on and stayed on - even after recycling the engine. the "service advance trac" warning also stayed on and i lost the power steering. this is unbelievable, the dealer said that they had to replace the "power-steering gear box", and the part is two days away. i saw someone posted that ford doesn't consider this a safety issue because you can still steer it. if i have trouble steering it, i hate to think what my wife or daughters would experience. this vehicle isn't like a regular full size car or truck, i am 6'2" and weigh about 270, and when the power steering failed, i could not steer it to park the vehicle in reverse. it was very difficult to steer at any speed under 5mph. if this happened while driving at speed, a person could lose control. this is obviously not a minor fix on a new car. looking at the posts, ford needs to address this issue asap. i asked the dealer what this repair would cost if it weren't under warranty. i was told a couple of thousand dollars. if he is correct, that is ridiculous on a 18 month vehicle. i didn't buy this to be a money pit. *tr

I was driving when the steering wheel jerked. the steering immediately became very hard to operate and the engine appeared to lose power. indicator lights came on about the same time the steering jerked. the lights said "service advance trac" and "terrain management system fault". i had to pull of the road and just trying to make to left turns to pull into a parking lot took all the strength i had in both arms. my turn signals would also not work. i even tried turning the 4 wheel drive knob, as i noticed that the lights were not working on that as well and nothing would light up or show up on the dash screen. i turned off the car while i pulled out my owners manual to look up information on these indicators. after letting the car sit for a while, i restarted the car and the indicator lights were still there. i called ford road side assistance and had the car towed. i also was put in a rental car. then today the ford dealer told me that since my car had 47, 627 miles on it that this problem wasn't covered under warranty. they told me only if it happened in first 36,000 miles. they also said i would have to pay $1865 for a new rack and pinion steering or they would clear the code and i could chance it to see if it happens again. they said it was common and most times you just need to let the car cool down and restart it. this is very upsetting- they knew this was a common problem and then i investigated this further online and found many other people reporting the same issues. some in just the first month of owning the vehicle. this is the same thing that happened to me with this vehicle and the engine fan not working causing the car to overheat in the first 6 months of owning it. later i got a recall on it. this is very frustrating- i have a car that is 18 months old and i have to put $1865 into it to fix a common problem/defect. this is a serious defect! *tr

My wife was getting on the freeway with left blinker on to merge lanes and the power steering assist light came on the dashboard and then the power steering quit. my wife with a fully loaded car with kids on board was thankfully able to slowly muscle the car on to the shoulder. she then powered the car off and then restarted it which seemed to fix the problem. luckily this incident did not happen on curvy road or there would have been a major accident. ford, please fix this problem. would hate to see someone get hurt and the explorer name damaged all over again due to another very serious issue. *tr

While driving uphill on a narrow mountain road i lost all power steering assist with a simultaneous audible warning and a dash visual warning that my power steering assist had failed. with difficulty i was able to exit the road into a private driveway. i turned the vehicle off. in a few moments i started the vehicle again and everything functioned normally. i took the vehicle to my ford dealer on or about september 10, 2012. they told me i needed a new steering assembly. it has been on back-order since then. no additional faults have occurred. the vehicle now has over 12,000 miles on it. *tr

Ford motor company october 18, 2012 while driving my 2012 ford explorer, the power steering unit quit working as i was turning into the school parking lot. i almost hit a gate post and had to backup with a ten car line behind me. the steering continued powerless for the entire trip home, about ten miles or 15 minutes. after parking overnight in my drive, i started the suv to drive to the dealership and the power assist steering worked as normal. this could cause a serious accident if turning a sharp curve and going into the other lane of traffic or traveling around one of the mountainous curves we encountered this summer, with no guardrail and a hundred foot drop into the pacific ocean rocks of the northern california coast. if an accident did occur the explorer would check out to be mechanically trouble fee and the cause would be listed as operator error. Car's power steering went out making it very difficult to drive. my wife was able to pull over into a lot and called me. the car was a few miles from a ford dealership (northgate ford near cincinnati, ohio). after starting it back up, i was able to drive the car to the dealership. the dealer called me back that night (aug 6th) and stated they confirmed the problem and the car can't be driven until this is fixed. the car has now been in the shop for more then 30 days with no fix and the date to get parts keeps slipping. the last i heard the earliest they will have parts is nov 2012. that will means the car will be in the shop for 90 to 120 days waiting on parts. i see articles about a 2011 ford explorer power steering issue that seems to fit what we are seeing on our 2012. i have contacted the bbb and i'm looking into ohio's lemon law. *tr

I bought a certified preowned ford explorer with 19,900 miles in last week of june 2012. within one month, i had multiple incidence ( roughly ten times)of the vehicle power steering assist failing while driving. it would fail both at complete stops , slow speeds and once while exiting a highway offramp at approximately 25mph. once the vehicle was restarted the system would reboot and the problem would be temporarily corrected. the local ford dealer has had the vehicle since first week of august and is now telling me it may take until november to correct this issue. they have been telling me the needed part is on "back order".that is all i have heard. *tr *js

Driving on rt 495 when the warning lights activated and a warning came on in the message center saying "service advance track." i started to pull over to the side of the road and discovered my power steering wasn't working. after i pulled over i stopped the car i looked in the message center i saw that the advance track wasn't selected. i tried to select it but wasn't able to. i turned the car off and back on a couple times and the problem cleared. called ford dealership and they didn't seem to want to help because "turning the car off and back on fixed the problem." i pushed them to get an appointment, they called me saying that the power steering module was bad and needed to be replaced. *tr

Power steering has failed on a number of occasions resulting in driver having to manually steer. steering fails when auto in motion. occurrence when speeds anywhere from 10-60mph. very dangerous. one has to pull over (if possible) and turn off auto and then re-start. issue has occurred four times in last month. only 10,000 miles on auto now. *tr

On july 27th, while driving on the highway, at approx. 60 mph, i received error messages regarding the trac assist and power steering assist. at that time, i noticed that the steering had completely locked up on me. luckily i was on straight-a-way, and there was no one in the lane next to me, so i was able to ease on over to the shoulder. i called the closest dealership, who advised me to turn the car off and on, and bring it in. in the meantime, my husband had sent me the arfc.org link showing several others who had the same issue. the tech at the dealership basically blew me off and said "well, you can post anything on the internet." the next day, i was told that the entire steering mechanism would have to be replaced, and it took five days to get the parts in and the vehicle repaired and back on the road. it appears this is a known issue, but ford is failing to do anything about it, as far as recalls, etc. *tr

While the vehicle is moving, the power steering assist failed and the steering wheel becomes extremely difficult to turn. it is virtually impossible to turn the steering wheel, only with extreme difficulty and approximately a tenth of a mile of straight roadway was i able to steer the car to the shoulder. turning the car off will temporarily re-engage the power steering. however, the problem continually re-occurs without any warning. the vehicle is not controllable at highway speeds or on curvy roads. *tr

I was slowing down as i was approaching a traffic signal and heard a warning chime. initially, vehicle did not show any signs of problem, but got a warning message of power steering failure (or something similar) and another one indicating to service the advance track system. the advance track indicator light went out on the dial, too. after a few hundred feet the power steering was completely gone and i had to use significant effort to steer the vehicle into my driveway. fortunately, i was only 2 miles from home with few turns to get there. almost couldn't make the turn into my driveway. started & restarted the vehicle several times and eventually all problems and warning lights disappeared. drove the vehicle a few miles and all seems ok. will update with any additional issues after 8/21/12. vehicle was purchased used on 8/15/12 with 12,700 miles. called dealer and they said to bring in if problems persist. *tr

I was driving home from a movie on pacific coast hwy in huntington beach, ca and all of sudden the power steering assist fault warning came on, i hadn't lost complete function of the steering but it was about a half a mile down the road that it got almost impossible to steer. i called the dealership and they told me to tow it to the dealership as soon as possible. i didn't know that there was a short term fix by turning off and then turning back on again to make the warning light go away. tomorrow taking in my car to dealer to get it fix.... now before it ends in crash or someone killed.!!!!!! i have the ecoboost i4 cylinder engine. *tr

I had a customer whose 2012 explorer had power steering failure (july 15, 2012). the vehicle was still running but he could not turn the steering wheel. i contacted ford mtr co and ask if they were having issues like this. they said no. i told them they may want to see all the complaints about the problem on line and they said again they did not have a problem. i called other dealers and found that all of them had been having the problems and was told how to correct it. i contacted ford again and received authorization to make the repairs, ordered the parts and found out they were on national back order. after waiting 31 days i called ford again and was told my parts order had expired (i personally followed up on the order everyday) and i would have to reorder. i can't understand why ford did not advise me of the problem when i first ask....can you spell cover up? i have supplied my customer a vehicle and ford has authorized up to $2000 for rental. from looking at the back order status, i would guess it will be another 30 days before we receive the parts. i would suggest that ford issue a recall as it is extremely dangerous (it happened twice to my customer) and some one is going to get killed. good luck finding the parts. park your vehicle and have ford tow it in. initially my customer thought that his vehicle had gone dead but that is not the case he just could not steer it. if it happens to you...park the vehicle....learn about your state's lemon law. my customer will be with out their vehicle for over 2 months but since it did not fail during the first warranty year, he is not covered by the lemon law in our state. *tr

Complete loss of power steering. happened multiple times. it showed power steering assist fault in the instrument cluster. very dangerous. when will it happen again at highway speeds on a corner? hopefully someone can help because i really don't feel like driving this vehicle with my wife and 2 small children. please note i live in toronto, ontario, canada, m8w2h8. *tr

I was driving my ford explorer on a road when a "service advance trak" warning appeared on the left hand dash. my steering wheel locked, and i had to forcibly muscle the car to the side of the road. i turned the car ignition off, then back on, and the error went away. clearly, this was dangerous, as i could have crashed into another car. a few weeks went by, this happened again sporadically during this time, usually after my car was in "park." yesterday i turned my car on, and "power steering issue" popped up as a warning, and again the car was not able to be steered as the steering wheel locked. despite turning the ignition off and on, the warning and steering lock did not turn back on. i had the car towed back to the dealer. *tr

From a stop-zero mph, conducted a right turn from surface street to freeway on-ramp. mid-turn, power steering assist failed, resulting in near accident/running off-roadway surface. additionally, elec stability control (ford 'advancetrac') warning light indicators illuminated indicating service required immediately. *tr

As i was backing my vehicle up there was a chime and an error message displayed on my left screen instrument panel telling me that there was a power steering assist fault. i restarted the vehicle and the fault did not return. two or three days later as i was driving, it happened again. i was going 15mph and out of nowhere, the error popped up on the instrument panel and i couldn't make a turn. i restarted the vehicle in the middle of the road and the fault cleared. 8 aug 2012 i was driving down the road and it happened again. again i was doing 15mph. i attempted to restart the vehicle but this time the fault did not go away. i then drove the vehicle back home and since then i haven't been able to clear the fault long enough to drive it to the dealership. luckily for me, all of these occurrences happened in my neighborhood. had i been on the interstate or driving fast, i wouldn't have been able to make a turn and could've hurt myself or someone else. i contacted the dealership and they will be looking at the vehicle tomorrow. the only problem that i have now, "other than the fact that i have a brand new $46,000 paper weight" is figuring out how i will get the vehicle to the dealership. *tr

Three times in the same day my power steering went out. once when i started the car first thing in the morning and was backing our of my garage. twice when i started driving forward after idling in a drive through line it went out. all three times i received warnings immediately after the power steering was lost that the power steering assist was out. each time i had to turn the engine off and restart it to regain the power steering. *tr

I live in ecuador (south america) and bought a 2012 explorer base model, on october 2011. a few days ago, after a long trip, i got the "advance trac" error message, and 3 days ago, i got the power steering failure, and the steering wheel got locked, traveling at around 20 mph, the two messages were on the screen, advance track and power steering. i turned the car off and then back on, and everything was normal. yesterday i turned on the car and had no power steering, i had to turn it off and on again, to have it back. *tr

Power steering fault while returning from short supermarket trip, lost all power steering, dash board lit up, then terrain sensor fault, causing a feeling of reduced gear, turn signals failed as well. very difficult to drive, and unable to reset by shutting vehicle off. dealership stated a fault in power steering rack, requiring replacement, they also stated it is a different part number then original part meaning it may have been remodeled due to "issues". very dangerous situation!!!! *tr

I have had 4 different instances where i received a "power steering assist failure" while driving the vehicle straight or entering a turn. this has occurred at speeds ranging from 10 mph and up to 40 mph. when i can finally pull over and turn the car on and off the warning goes away, and the power steering starts working again. *tr

Greetings, i saw information on the web that stated the nhtsa is investigating issues with 2011 ford explorer power steering fault as to a possible safety recall. the information i saw was specific to the 2011 model year. however, i have a 2012 with the same issue. for no apparent reason, a "power steering assist fault" message is displayed followed by "service advance track". this can happen at anytime, without warning, regardless of your speed. this is very dangerous !!! my wife almost hit the railing on a curved bridge when the power steering decided to quit. and luckily, there was no oncoming traffic at the time. the vehicle was just purchased last november (2011) and has approximately 10k miles. this is definitely a dangerous safety issue that needs to be addressed as soon as possible !!! As i was driving through two consecutive 90 degree turns at approximately 15 mph, the power steering failed causing the vehicle to be extremely difficult to turn. due to the loss of power, the vehicle nearly left the road into an adjacent ditch. the vehicle warning lights on the dash did light up indicating a failure. once regaining control of the vehicle, i turned the vehicle off. upon restarting the vehicle, the failure lights were still lit. after reading the owner's manual, i determined it would not harm the vehicle to continue driving it without power steering. approximately 0.2 miles later the power to the power steering system was restored. *tr

I imported this 2012 ford explorer to bolivia, bought in miami, fl. i was driving on a straight road, relatively slow (30mph). suddenly the steering got stiff, making it extremely hard to turn. i slowly parked on the side of the road. the dashboard showed a sign that read: steering fault assist. i turned the vehicle off, then back on again. the problem went away. i am lucky that i was not going any faster, on a highway, or on a curve. a friend who bought a 2012 explorer here in bolivia, from an newly (2012) authorized dealer, had the exact same problem. he was on a highway, going at approx 60mph. fortunately for him, he was going straight, and was able to park on the side. *tr

While driving approx 45mph the system track warning light came on & beeped, immediately followed by the power steering failure light. i was in an area with heavy construction & could not pull off the road immediately & steering became less & less responsive & in less than a minute as i found a place to pull off, the steering locked up totally. i called for tow service after turning off & back on with the same warnings & unable to turn it at all. while waiting on tow, i turned it off a couple of more times & the steering was back but the system track control light remained on. once the car made it to the dealership, they were unable to duplicate the problem after checking, driving & rechecking for four days. i was told to drive it & return if it happened again. i am scared to death to drive this car for fear of it happening on the freeway at much higher speeds or my normal route to work which involves numerous curves & curves on bridges with no place to get off the road even if i could manage to get it off the road. my husband also fears for my safety in this vehicle. how many chances do i get before i crash & hurt or kill myself and/or someone else. i for sure do not want to carry any passengers in a vehicle that is capable of carrying seven. *tr

When using the passing gear ,to pass a vehicle ,toxic exhaust fumes get sucked in the cabin ,took the vehicle to the ford dealer ,and was told that it has been happening to the ford explorer,and that ford motor company knows ,but does not know what is causing it ; this happens only when using the passing gear to pass another vehicle ,the fumes are so bad inside the cabin that the window has to be open to the let the fumes out . this a hazard and health issue . *tr

We had just driven 1 1/2 hours (about 100 miles) from home to a campground, pulling our fleetwood pop-up camper. drove highway speeds, with air conditioning on (as it was hot outside), sometimes using the "tow" mode other times not. vehicle acted fine during our trip. pulled into the parking lot to register at the office and shut off the motor for about 15 min. started it again to pull into our site and there was no power steering. got a warning on the dash that said "power steering assist fault". note: this had happened a couple weeks prior to this under similar circumstances, but after shutting off the ignition and restarting, problem cleared itself. not so lucky this time. power steering did not come back. it was 4:30 pm the day before a national holiday (july 4th) and i knew it was not going to get looked at until at least 2 days later. ford roadside assistance could only offer to have it towed to the nearest dealer 21 miles away. i decided to have it towed on july 5th. on july 4th, after letting it sit all night and completely cool down, i started it up. same problem plus two additional warning messages: "service advancetrack" and "terrain management system fault". vehicle was towed to dealer and diagnosed as needing the steering gear (part of the electronic rack and pinion steering). part #bb5z-3504-he. i was told there were over 500 on back order and no estimated date as to when they will be in stock. had i known there was this known problem with the explorers i certainly wouldn't have bought one. why wasn't there a recall? there are now almost 600 of these parts on back order which tells me there are a lot of consumers affected and potentially many more to come. the service manager told me the design of the part was changed after my ford was built. *tr

I was on the entrance ramp to the get on the highway and my steering locked up. i lost my power steering and the power steering assist fault light came on and the service advance trac warning also came on flashing back and forth between the two. this terrified me and thank goodness there wasn't much traffic and i was able to exit the highway and stop the car. the power steering came back on when the car was started. this is a very dangerous situation and i hope it is addressed immediately. *js

While driving grandchild to school the power steering suddenly went out requiring a tremendous amount of torque to turn car. i received several faults including traction control, traction control off, power steering assist fault. i was able to manhandle the car to a safe place and shut down the engine and after a few moments restarted an all faults cleared. if my wife had been driving at this time we would have been reporting an accident for she could not have possibly have turned this car. i immediately took the car to riggins motors (selling dealer) and had to leave the car with them for investigation. this is a problem ford needs to overcome now and not stall like they did on the my touch problem for this could easily cause a loss of life if it hasn't already happened. *js

While changing lanes on the 60 west freeway i attempted to change lanes and vehicle power steering shut down. i was in the middle of my lane change and was nearly struck by a trailing diesel truck. i was only able to move steering wheel one inch to the right and one inch to the left. i pulled off highway based on my advanced driving skills as a law enforcement officer. this vehicle is my assigned work vehicle. several faults to include hill fault, traction fault flashed on the dashboard. i turned the vehicle off and on and the power steering worked. i immediately notified my workplace. a coworker followed me to the fritts ford in riverside, ca. i told them about the safety issue. fritts ford tested my vehicle for two days. they said the error could not be repeated but my vehicle had numerous faults recorded with the drivetrain, steering, hill, traction control. they said it was an electrical issue. there is a serious issue with this model. this is the first time it happened but it nearly cost me my life. i fear similar incidents will cause fatalities with unskilled civilian drivers. *tr

First instance (2 months after i bought xlt model - bought late september 2011), in december 2011, electrical system was draining my battery causing my touch to go out, my engine light to go off, etc. now, second instance (march 31, 2012), driving an hour to a destination, turned off the car for 10 minutes, got back in the car, the car stalled and locked the steering wheel. after talking to the service department, they told me if i got the car running, that it was safe to drive. finally got the car turned on for the drive back, half way back, the rpms were revving and then the car was sucking back, almost home and the cars power steering started to go out and it was stalling at every light. took into ford dealership, they are still trying to figure out what the problem is and think it is a short somewhere in the system where they can't find it. i do not feel safe driving this car right now. *tr

I bought a new 2012 ford explorer on 11/26/11. the "my touch" computer didn't work from the begining. the response is slow or non-existent. the screens change on their own. the system freezes up at times leaving no control over nav, stereo, climate, phone, or either of 2 dashboard screens. it will switch to radio and play really loud and then switch back on it's own. ford knows of this problem and can't fix it. they've had my car 3 times and now refuse to see me more about this. they say a fix will come in the future. many people are having this problem. ford is selling broken cars, charging new car prices, and can't fix them. *tr

I stopped at a stop sign and took a left hand turn as i proceeded down a hill. my steering wheel wouldn't turn,like the wheel locked up, and the brakes were hard to push, not slowing me down. the explorer went off of the road striking a concrete pole. it destroyed the entire right front end, and destroyed the pole. the dealer said that they could fix the problem with the steering, and the brakes, but they are not responsible for the damage. they said that it's not ford's fault for the damage. *tr

In the words of one of the several ford motor co. customer care case manager i've spoken to since i purchased this vehicle about 6 weeks ago, ford's mytouch system is "totally dysfucntional". the software upon which this system is based was apparently co-authored by microsoft and ford is currently telling customers they have to wait for the next release, supposedly due to be released in "the first quarter of next year". has anyone ever heard this kind of message before...think ms vista! my explorer has an approx. 8"x5" touchscreen in the middle of the dash. it is supposed to come on when i start the vehicle and many functions of the vehicle are controlled by touching icons on the screen. unfortunately, when the screen fails to come on, usually for about the initial 20 minutes after starting the vehicle, the driver controls are unavailable. this includes features like being able to view the rear-view camera, turning on the heated seats, climate control features, dealing with phone calls and selecting music sources and radio channels, etc.. mytouch also includes a feature where its supposed to sync to the driver's mobile phone, but this only works intermittently at best. the worst problem with this system, which i believe makes the vehicle unsafe for nighttime driving, is when the touchscreen, which cannot be turned off or dimmed, starts flickering (ford's term is "strobing") very rapidly while driving after dark. this can continue for up to 30 minutes at a time, and is incredible distracting while trying to drive. i've posted a video on youtube under the heading "ford mytouch stobing". this problem has been known to ford since the 2011 model year and they continue to sell these problematic vehicles without telling customers until after they take possession. *tr

Two extremely frightening experiences happened this day. (1) i was driving on interstate 95 and the explorer braked extremely hard from a speed of 65 mph to zero. there was nothing around and i could not determine any reason for this. i proceeded on to my destination and the vehicle accelerated inexplicably to 95 mph. i tried to turn off the cruise control manually and by tapping the brake (i was fearful of the vehicle rolling). thank god, i was able to maneuver around traffic in northern new jersey and then the vehicle reduced speed. it was a very terrifying experience and one the ford dealer told me he has no explanation for. i have had many, failures of the myfordtouch system which i will detail in a separate incident report.

This form does not allow entry of multiple dates. there is an issue with myfordtouch with this vehicle that is continual. putting in one date is pointless. the climate (defroster, etc) system and the navigation system are part of this module, along with phone and audio features. this module locks continually and it is dangerous because you can't control the defroster or navigation system manually when this occurs. repeated trips to the dealer have been fruitless and my wife was in dangerous situations several times in heavy traffic corridor conditions in northern new jersey. it is unconscionable that ford is selling these vehicles for nearly $50,000 that are defective and they know they are defective.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford explorer. the contact stated that he was able to shut the ignition off with the electronic start button without placing the vehicle in park or depressing the brakes. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostics or repairs. the contact believed that there was a safety issue with all the vehicles that had a push to start button because it allowed the vehicle to be shut off without placing the gear in park and creating a risk of a roll away. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 800.

Power steering assist failure is coming on and the steering wheel completely locks. in researching this- several other ford explorers have been recalled due to this. this is a very serious concern - luckily this happened to me while in my driveway- i can not imagine what the outcome would be if i were on the road running 50 mph.

Bad smell with heat or ac on at higher speeds headaches and lightheadedness felt at times. a seperate issue altogether windows and door locks have failed to work a couple times leaving me stuck inside car until it decides to work. dealer has had suposed part on back order for 2 months.

Since we purchased the suv we noticed a strong odor of fumes in the vehicle cabin. it always occurs when accelerating, like when entering the highway, and the smell starts at the rear of the vehicle where my 2 kids are. we have had all 3 revisions done and still the odor persist. we are obligated to lower the windows each time to not feel nauseous and avoid the strong headaches that usually follow. my 9 year old son has asthma and suffers greatly from it and constantly complains of dizziness as we are daily highway drivers. my 4 year old has had multiple occasions of sudden vomiting while in the car, dizziness and headaches. i too have had to pull over to the side of the road due to the intensity of the fumes and feeling faint. i contacted the ford hotline on this issue and was issued a case # yet ford responded with no solution. they state the repairs they have available have been exhausted and they have no further solution. i asked for a buy back and apparently do not qualify for that either. i don't know what to do. we have been dealing with multiple yearly visits with the same complaint, year after year. we have documentation showing how since the year of purchase we had taken the vehicle in for the fumes odor issue and they had either no repair or pretended i was making it up. i'm glad this issue has surfaced in the media as i obviously was not making it up, and it's a real problem. i worry more than anything about the health of my children and their safety. we have been affected by this issue long before most of these complaints even appeared, and we've had to out of pocket pay for many of the repairs. please help.
