2005 TOYOTA Sienna

Ever since we bought the 2005 Toyota Sienna, we’ve never tried. But it seems the safety feature never was in-place. We did not know and did not ask. Until this morning the door closed on my 7 year old daughter. I called a local Toyota dealer right away. I am very disappointed because I’m a true Toyota fan. This is the second safety issue I encountered with this minivan. I contacted Toyota to file a complaint and received a case#1110060314. I have scheduled an appointment to have the dealer look at the issue. However, the initial diagnostic fee is $200 which is not covered. I actually never knew the safety feature suppose to be in-place until I did the research after the accident. All I wanted is to get the door fixed and make public aware of the problem – especially when we have little children.

I am experiencing a quite serious problem with a Toyota Sienna which is likely to be a corrosion issue.

I have good documentation on a class actionable problem for Toyota. There is a TSB for A/C replacement which costs $4644 which doesn’t fix the compressor seizure problem (I have had the TSB applied with extra last chance lemon law effort). My compressor has seized 5 times, all in the month of may (various years), which causes the vehicle to be undriveable – A/C clutch fails, belt fails and engine can overheat.

The run flat tires are an absolute joke. So we can drive 50 to 100 miles doing 55 mph on a flat or bad tire, if I can\’t make it home that day or night because I can\’t find the proper dealer to repair the tire, what have I gained? Mine were totally worn at 15k but the dealer said that they should be changed soon. At 20K I told them the tires had a constant vibration. They said \"next oil change\". My ex-husband drove the car and couldn\’t believe that they had let us drive like this. At this point my 17 year old had the car two hours away with him in the pouring rain. He was appalled. It took Toyota over a week to get the tires in and call me. By this point I had received the Toyota recall notice — but I had done some research and I knew I wanted them to put on regular tires. I want dependability, not this stupidity. They refused as the deal with the tire company mandated run flat tires. For the record, I also had done my service with the Toyota dealer so I qualified for \"free\" tires. If I had not used the recall thing, Toyota would have been willing to put on whatever tires we would want; but the recall superceded the Toyota \"free\" program. I am switching from these junky undependable things as soon as they wear out. I plan to put a spare in the trunk soon; certainly before the next road trip. I warn EVERYONE I can to avoid this type of tire. While I haven\’t had the disasters I\’ve read about with flat tires, I want to prevent one. With tires being one of the two most important things on a car (brakes the other) this is utter nonsense and Toyota should be ashamed.I also had numerous problems with the rear hatch and the side doors which wouldn\’t open or respond to the clicker or any buttons on numerous occasions. The Toyota dealer took it in for a day, ordered a part, put it in another day and hoped it fixed the problem. When it didn\’t the scenario was repeated. It was in for at least 4 to 6 days (not in a row). It is now fixed.

Our 2005 Sienna LE FWD has Dunlop tires that are worn and need to be replaced. We originally purchased our van December 28, 2004 and have only put about 18,000 miles on it.There is currently a Toyota fix for the 2005 Sienna AWD tires, where they will replace the tires for free. However, I believe that the same problems that have occurred with the AWD tires is also happening with our minivan. At this point, customer service has said it is not their responsibility — it\’s Dunlops. I intend to follow-up with Dunlop, but based on what information I\’ve received so far, it doesn\’t look like we will be getting replacement tires…without us paying money for them.

On august 1, 2005 while travelling westbound on I 80 from Tahoe to San Francisco, we (my wife and 3 kids under 5 years of age) encountered a flat tire in our four month old Toyota Sienna XLE/AWD Limited that had 3000 miles. After pulling over to shoulder, we evacuated the Sienna because of the amount of smoke coming from tire. Suddenly, the tire erupted into flame. Two passers-by extinguished the fire with fire extinguishers borrowed from nearby business. Towed on flatbed to nearby Toyota dealership, a new Bridgestone B380 \"run flat\" tire was put on and dealer said there was damage to underside/tire well but that it is safe enough to drive home. Once home Toyota and the dealer where we purchased the car in March said there is nothing they can do. It was an unfortunate \"road hazard\" but not their fault. I think these tires are dangerous. The next family that something like this happens to may not be so fortunate – lives are at stake!

Slowing as I approached a four-way stop, my brakes failed to stop. I heard a loud noise (my husband, a mechanical engineer says it is the anti-lock brakes) when I apply the brakes, they don’t work. I keep pressing the brake and on the fourth braking attempt they worked (came within inches of the car in front of me). This is the third time this has happened. Each time was at a slow speed (approx. 10 mph), after a rain but not currently raining. The first time this happened, I drove immediately to the dealer and was told they had never seen anything like this. This vehicle is currently at Toyota 101 in Redwood City and they have just told me that they couldn’t replicate the situation and are doing nothing.

Run Flat Tire issues. We had to replace all 4 tires at 40,000 miles and then about 3 months later had to replace 1 tire and then about 5 months later another tire and now 4 months replaced 3rd tire.

Oil pressure light came on, took van to dealer, since it was still under "Platinum" warranty. Told we had engine sludge, and entire motor would have to be replaced. "Platinum" warranty will not cover it, they deem it neglect on the part of the owner. We are told they "may overturn their decision" upon receipt of maintenance records. Warranty department maintains that prior sludge issues are a thing of the past…

My sliding doors become frozen in the winter and my children have to climb in through the front door to get into the vehicle. When we first try to open them and we see they are frozen, the doors stay slightly ajar and the alarm continues to beep while driving until they become unfrozen and unstuck. This sound will drive you crazy. I’m very concerned about the doors being frozen and an emergency happening and the kids can’t get out fast enough. Meanwhile, due to the doors being frozen and having to keep testing the power button to see if the door is unfrozen now the power buttons don’t work we have to manually open the doors.

2005 Sienna Toyota…Driver side sliding door will not close….Repaired 3 times. It is a serious danger to be caught on the road with no way to close the door. No satisfaction from the dealership…just bills! No one seems to take responsibility for this very obvious manufacturing defect…If there is any way you can advise me I would be grateful.

Letter from congressman loebsack's office on behalf of constituent re sudden acceleration of toyota sienna *tgw the consumer stated the vehicle suddenly accelerated while traveling with her husband and two children. the brakes did not stop the vehicle, nor did shifting the gear into neutral, park or reverse. the rpm needle went all the way to the right and there was a loud roar coming from the engine. the consumer pulled the key from ignition at about 75 mph in the middle of rush hour traffic. the consumer stated the sudden acceleration occurred twice before. toyota claimed the floor mats were the cause, however the consumer's husband checked the floor mats and they were not the problem. *jb updated 06/15/10.*jb

2005 toyota sienna mini van. consumer states problem with sliding doors. *tgw the door would freeze shut every time it snowed, rained or the temperature was below freezing. in addition, the passenger rear door would not unlock. the dealer informed the consumer it would cost $800.00 to fix as they would have to break the door panel to get the door open. the driver side door is beginning to exhibit the same problem. *jb

Consumer did research on investigations for a 2005 toyota sienna. consumer would like to know what toyota has to say about the investigation but they have not sent anything in yet. *kb

2005 toyota sienna bent rear shock due to part failure. customer states that toyota is going to make him pay for the repair to the van because it was not in recall and not under warranty. *kb the consumer stated the rear hatch was being shut when the shock bent. the rear hatch was used minimally. *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 toyota sienna. the contact was unable to provide an approximate speed at the time of the incident, but he noticed that the air bag light intermittently illuminated on the instrument panel for an extended period of time before turning off. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the contact was informed that the sensors within the seats were defective. the vehicle had not been repaired. the failure and current mileages were approximately 126,000.

Vehicle was going at approximately 45 mph and inadvertently the air bags deployed. owner contacted the manufacturer, and was told to take it to the nearest toyota dealership. however, the owner had not taken the vehicle to dealer for inspection. owner is still waiting for a return phone call from the dealership. *ak

While reversing out of a parking spot, felt the van "jumped" then accelerated on it's own while in reverse swiped a parked truck, and did a half circle into the drive-through of a parking lot only to stopped when it hit another suv. i felt i had no control of the van while this was happening.

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 toyota sienna. the contact stated that the power motor unexpectedly engaged, which forced the power lift gate to the fully closed position. a serious injury could occur if someone was struck by the lift gate when it fell down or closed. the vehicle was taken to a dealer and a technician concluded that his vin was excluded from recall # 084244000, structure; body; hatchback/liftgate. since he was ineligible for a free remedy, the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the failure and current mileages were 87,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 toyota sienna. while placing packages in the rear of the vehicle, the liftgate fell on the contact's head without warning. the dealer replaced the struts. one month later, while holding her infant and retrieving packages form the rear, the liftgate automatically fell and struck the infant. the manufacturer stated that they were investigating the failure, but have not reached any conclusions. the failure and current mileages were 31,000.

Please reference existing nhtsa action number: ea06020 struts for the rear power liftgate failed suddenly. initial behavior was rear liftgate opening more slowly than normal, and began to occur during colder weather temperatures. then liftgate struts suddenly failed completely- after opening the liftgate, it fell down with full weight (almost zero resistance) onto driver who was under the liftgate. *tr

Liftgate on 2005 toyota sienna xle limited with the power liftgate option. gradually stopped lifting and upon several occasions, would lift up completely and as i was loading cargo into the rear it came down pinning me between it and the bumper. the shocks were not strong enough to hold the weight of the liftgate and it had started to go down and the power closing feature took over. *tr

We have a 2005 toyota sienna xle limited awd minivan with a power lift-gate. earlier this week, after opening the lift-gate via the power remote, the door immediately slammed down. my wife was retrieving items from the trunk and was hit by the falling door. this is a very heavy door, and my wife hurt herself trying to hold it open, while getting out from under it. the lift-gate opens under power, but now will not stay open, and slams shut every time. we have since shut off the power feature, and only use the lift-gate when together. someone holds it open, while the other loads or unloads the trunk. it is too heavy to handle alone. *tr

The support device for the back liftgate failed to stay up. it looks like it leaked fluid where the piston meets the cylinder. it fails everytime the door is open. *tr

Lift gate will not stay open any longer. when power lift is enabled, it will open the back hatch (slowly) and immediately begin closing -- in power mode! this has some pretty fierce force behind it and am glad that we do not allow our children anywhere near it until this is fixed. one or both of the gas lifters has obviously failed. it used to be that this was bad only in cold weather but now it happens regardless of temperature (70 degrees today). *tr

My 2005 sienna power hatch door would not hold during cold weather. when it is around 40f, the power hatch door would not stay at the top and would come back down. the dealer replaced the rear hatch struts but the problem remains. the dealer told me it is like that when the weather is cold and there is not much they can do. here in idaho, there are about 4 months in a year that the weather is that cold. that means i cannot used the power hatch rear door 4 months out of a year. i am just wondering why would a customer pays extra for something that they cannot use 4 months out of a year. one of the reason i purchased the limited version was because of the power hatch door. if toyota takes the position that the power hatch door would not work when it is cold, toyota should disclose this to all potential customers. so people can make an informed decision before they make the purchase. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 toyota sienna. the contact stated that the rear liftgate would not remain open. the dealer stated that the liftgate shocks should be replaced. as october 4, 2007, the dealer had not repaired the vehicle. there is a defect investigation open for the structure: body: hatchback/lift gate: support device (nhtsa action number ea06020). the vin was invalid. the failure mileage was 31,000 and current mileage was 32,000.

I opened my rear liftgate using the power button and reached into the back of my sienna and the door unexpectedly started closing on top of me. i was unable to push back hard enough on it and had to quickly drop to the ground to prevent being trapped and/or injured. had my children been in their i don't know how serious it might have been. *jb

My daughter was placing items in the back of our 2005 toyota sienna xle when the power rear liftgate suddenly came down with great force and struck her on the arm/shoulder. it was with great difficulty that my daughter was able to escape from under the door. the liftgate operated on its own. this is a serious safety risk. my daughter was able to force her way free, with bruises, but a smaller person could have been seriously injured. i will talk to toyota customer care to report this incident, but in my opinion this is a dangerous vehicle. i checked the liftgate when i arrived home and it is still operating erratically. until this is resolved, we have turned off the power to the rear liftgate and are operating it manually. *jb

Rear liftgate stay on 2005 toyota sienna has leaked and failed. result is now liftgate closes automatically on top of owner when loading and unloading. only 25,000 miles at time of failure. *tr

Back door was opened using the remote key and then it suddenly closed by itself. individual was hit by the door as it closed. further inspection showed that the left side "strut" on the door was leaking. called toyota customer support at 800-331-4331 and was given a reference #. toyota also referred to tsb bo001-07. brought vehicle to dealer and dealer would charge to fix since vehicle has 51k miles, although less than 2 years old. dealer refused to acknowledge back door stays were defective although numerous consumers have complained, and there is a current nhtsa investigation (action #ea06020). *tr

Complete failure of right rear hatch shock. the shock completely and suddenly lost all pressure causing the rear hatch to fall. defective part was replaced. toyota covered only half of the cost. part was left at toyota of greenville. *jb

Using the automatic opener on the key fob i opened the trunk liftgate of the 2005 toyota sienna xle limited and was putting groceries in it when it came crashing down on my back. i brought it in to the toyota dealership, and they confirmed there was an issue with the shocks ,and were ordering replacement parts. this was very dangerous. the force that the door came crashing down with was enough that it would' have crushed a child. even as a strong adult, it is difficult to hold the door open. the trunk was not usable until this problem was fixed. *ak

2005 toyota sienna lift gate strut fail, causing the lift gate to fall on users. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated while the lift gate was opened, the left rear support hydraulic strut fractured and the lift gate fell down without warning. no injuries were sustained. the vehicle was inspected by a dealer who determined both rear lift gate hydraulic support struts needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was alerted.

Rear hatch fails when trying to open the hatch causing the hatch to fall and because of the weight could cause serious injury if someone is attempting to get items out of the back of the van. *jb

Failure of rear liftgate strut causing liftgate to immediately close we have a 2005 toyota sienna with a power rear liftgate. when only one strut failed, as soon as the door was opened, it no longer had enough pressure to keep the door open. as the the door began to fall, the power closing mechanism began to pull it closed. in otherwords, as soon as the door was opened, it began to automatically close. fortunately there were no injuries--it just gave us a scare. to correct this failure, the dealer is replacing the struts so that the door will remain up when opened.

Liftgate support cylinder is leaking, won't support the liftgate. fell on my head the first time before i knew about the problem. happened 1000 miles out of warranty and the dealership wouldn't help me out. the part is very expensive for what it is. $180.00 from the dealership. i ordered mine on the internet for $125.00. still waiting for it to come. *nm

I was loading packages into the cargo bay of my 2005 toyota sienna (minivan) and the power hatch failed and closed on me. i was leaning into the vehicle and my arms were pinned. the hatch did not go back up on its own and i had to push up with my neck and shoulders to free myself. the vehicle has approximately 13,500 miles and has never been in an accident or otherwise damaged (to our knowledge). i would estimate fewer than some 200 cycles of using the hatch. there was no warning of imminent failure such as a gradual lowering of hatch opening performance. i am currently going through rehab for a cervical strain (sprained neck and shoulders). i brought the vehicle in to the dealership to be inspected by the local toyota regional rep. he said he never heard of this before and that i am the only who was ever injured by this type of failure. i do not trust him to be truthful and unbiased. i am an engineer and i do mostly component failure analysis. with a fairly new vehicle, low miles and a little used hatch i doubt this could be a single occurrence. i don't care to be bamboozled by toyota. had this happened to someone physically more fragile, they may have been paralyzed or killed. i requested that toyota not repair the vehicle at this point in time in order to make it available for other inspections or if this becomes legal evidence.*jb

Abs pump stopped working. no warning. brakes failed,ran into my garage. took to local mechanic. had to pump breaks to get it there or pay towing cost. learned over 2000.00 for the part. it is know to go out he said and shouod gave been a recalled item...

Abs brake pump module. went out causing accident. no warning. abs lights came on. took to shop. draining battery,causing brakes to fail. shouod be recalled due to no warning,complete brake failure,causing vehicle to be dangerous, not road worthy.

Front tires - excessive tire wear problems

I was backing out of a parking space in a parking lot. i put the car in reverse, place my foot on the brake, put the car into drive, lifted my foot off of the brake and the car immediately began to accelerate without my foot even touching the accelerator. when i put my foot on the brake, the brake pedal went all the way down to the floor without stopping the vehicle. the van struck another vehicle that was parked in the parking lot, went over the curb of the parking lot, down an embankment into a ravine and headed towards a tree. the passenger that was in the front seat then reached over and put the car into park, which brought the car to a stop. the whole time the car was moving i was trying to stop the car by pumping the brakes, but they did not work. the car was accelerating the entire time until the passenger stopped it by shifting into park. the airbags did not deploy. damage was done to the front passenger bumper and side of the car, the driver's side front tire exploded. after the accident, the brakes did function.

When driving through sweeping turns on dry, paved roads, the vehicle's vsc engages, causing vehicle to self brake, pulling to the left (toward oncoming traffic), and the vsc light on the dash to blink and beep. this puts the passengers of my car in danger, as well as those in vehicles around us who are not expecting a sudden application of brakes or swerving into neighboring lane. my vehicle has been inspected at an independent mechanic with no findings which would warrant the vehicle to engage in such activity. *tr

My steering has been getting stiff for the past few weeks. about a month i noticed that my steering was stiff and then smooth a few days later. now it feels stiff at cold start and even after warm up from normal driving. i have new belts and no power steering fluid leak. i've read many blogs online and people claiming that the (u-joint) aka "steering knuckle" is the cause. due to water/dirt/salt from the road - causing rust on the u-joint. toyota manufacturer should have thought of installing a rubber boot to protect the u-joint from exposure of weather elements. if the u-joint is badly rusted, it can break off and cause an accident. this should be considered as a safety recall.

Crankshaft pulley safety recall - 2005 toyota sienna -recall # 11v539000 more vehicles possibly affected than stated in recall notice. dealer stated vin did not fall in range of recall, although the defective crankshaft pulley part stamped with mark has been identified on my vehicle. burning smell related to drive belt while driving and abnormal engine noise. upon replacing new drive belt, the crankshaft pulley was inspected and shown to fail due the inadequate adhesive stated in the recall. notified dealer, called toyota representative and opened case#1611070038. both dealer and toyota refused recall since vin was not in range. toyota representative stated no photos or evidence were required to show the failed crankshaft pulley. please used the details and photos attached for odi# 10924632

The air bag light is on for the third time since i got my car, it got fixed twice before under the warranty but now is not in the warranty no more.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 toyota sienna. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, there was an abnormal smoke odor emitting from the front of the vehicle. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 11v539000 (engine and engine cooling). the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 107,000.

Vehicle's vsc engaged and applied braking and steering interference at 65 mph on a straightway on the highway in dry conditions and on a non-distressed roadway. this caused a very dangerous situation.

Airbag light came on for no apparent reason. dealership wants $5000 to replace the airbag harness assembly because the impact image sensor is damaged. this seems like a great deal of money for a sensor.

When the rear sliding door was closing, the cable broke inside the door and the door would not close. i was at preschool picking my kids up so i had to call a friend and the only way we could get the door closed was by cutting the cable.

Steering has become intermittently stiff. steering wheel doesn't self center. it's difficult to turn the wheel either way. after turning the wheel very hard, it suddenly becomes easy. this phenomenon occurs when the vehicle is stationary, and at all speeds. the problem started approximately two months ago, and has gotten progressively worse. the power steering pump is working properly, the belt is in good condition, there are no power steering fluid leaks and the power steering fluid level is correct.

The lift gate struts, which have already been replaced via a recall have failed. the lift gate will not stay open with the lift gate motor on or off. it slams shut and is very dangerous. when trying load in groceries today, the lift gate tried to close on me. lucky children where not the ones that were underneath.

When using the remote buttons for the power slider doors, there is a loud popping/grinding noise and the doors fail to open. the first time we realized this was a concern, the vehicle was parked in the driveway. our concern is that one day the doors will quit working all together and our children will not be able to get out of the vehicle in the event of an emergency.

My 2005 toyota sienna started giving problems of rack and pinion leak for power steering around 90,000 miles. asked the dealer if this could be covered under warranty or power train but was denied. looking around various forums online, i came across that many of 2005 toyotas have this type of problem. i also own 2005 toyota camry and it also have the exact same problem at about similar mileage. cost to repaid was mentioned as $1300. i have 2 2005 toyota vehicles and both have exact same problem wanting me to spend $2600 total to repair the rack and pinion unit of both of my cars. i understand a lot of other 2005 toyota owners also have similar complaints. it should be a recall or it should be enhanced warranty work and toyota should fix this.

Dashboard started becoming soft a few months ago, where if you accidently scraped it with your fingernail a little chunk would come out, and then it started cracking and every time we get in there, there is another crack. worried about air bag coming out. i'm just now reading that a letter was sent out from toyota about this to owners, but we never got one. we have gotten one for a couple of other things, but not for this and we didn't get one for clicking noise on driver's door either, which is happening now. i know the car is older, but if these are defects, toyota should fix them. i'm reading about a lot of people having the same problems.

Seat belt will not retract like it should. this happens too often. not just in my car.

Driver side door is making loud noise when door is opened or closed. this popping noise is coming from door check pocket. i'd noticed that toyota had recalled several vehicles related to this issue however they didn't recall some of the other vehicles including ours.

The car dashboards is cracked and sticky

Takata inflators - when driving in city 30mph or freeway 50-60mph in curvy path, the unti-skid lock turns off even if the road was dry. when it happened frequently and a motorcycle almost slammed from behind, i brought my van to the dealer and it shows no record of the unti-skid lock being on. i insisted to take precautions and they did a zero calibration, changed new tires and realignment but problem persist. i brought it back with the same complaint but they claimed the they never had any other customer with the same problem. i reached online yet there were many others. i hope you can help me on this. the dealer can't figure out this problem and just washed their hands. this happened multiple times already and afraid to drive my van.

Drivers side door internal metal is pulling away from itself where the door check is. this also causes the metal to cut into the door check. creating an audible clicking noise but also creating a safety issue. i have been told that there is a chance that the door itself could fall off. toyota implemented years ago a customer program to help for the first 10 years or 100,000 mile warranty by extending the warranty. however this does not cover vehicles that had an issue after the warranty expired or if they buy the car used. due to this i am required to have the whole door replaced and also painting that whole side of the car which will be a total of $2,114.64. i called toyota headquarters and they said there is nothing they can do since no recall was issued and only the customer program was setup to help correct this safety issue.

While driving on a normal day no rain or any slippery condition on the road going about 40 miles an hour my vehicle anti slip system ingaged and break momentary and vehicle slowed down this happens several time why is this system engaging when it's not raining or no slippery condition existing on the road.

Sienna was accelerating from 40-45 mph and a slight right turn on a city street, when the vsc lights turned on and applied brakes. city street was dry, weather was clear and sunny.

Power sliding door stuck open. wouldn't budge - we live in the upper peninsulla of michigan and this happened during the middle of winter as we were getting our children to school. temps were in the single digits with wind chills -10 to -20 degrees. had to physically force the door shut to close it. it's still in the same state i left in. doesn't open. it's just barely closed/latched so the beeper doesn't go off indicating the door is ajar. cable is broken. other door is slowly closing on power and when turned off (power option) the door sometime won't stay open but will slide back to closed position. super heavy door and little children don't create a safe environment.

While driving around curves with dry pavement on highways and exit/entrance ramps at highway rates of speed (55-65 miles per hour or less) the anti-lock brake system engage,s causing the van to pulse and slow down unexpectedly. it disengages once the wheel straightens. we first tried to trouble shoot with our local mechanic with no success, prompting us to have our local toyota service department attempt to diagnosis. initially they said they were not able to diagnosis the problem or replicate it on a local highway (as it does not occur on every curve encountered) and were ready to send us home without any remedy. this was unacceptable. with our persistence they hooked it up to a computer and determined(without guaranteeing) it was the steering angel sensor and replaced it. now without returning the van to us, they want us to replace the rack and pinion system for even more cost, again, without guaranteeing this will alleviate the problem. per our reading up on this problem, we have found that this appears to be problem for other 2005 toyota sienna minivans.

This is a customers car. i work in an alignment shop. the customer dropped this car off this morning for an alignment. i drove the car into the shop, on the alignment rack this morning. when i got out of the car, and walked around to the front of the car, i noticed the hood was open. i did not remember popping the hood, but i figured i just forgot, and proceeded to shut the hood, as i didn't need it open to align the vehicle. when i tried to close the hood, it would not catch, it just kept popping back up. it seemed to me that the latch was stuck. after looking under the hood, i looked under the dash. what i found, was the hood latch cable was routed under the parking brake arm, every time you set the parking brake, you were "popping" the hood! this can be a very dangerous situation! if you set the parking brake without knowing the hood is open, you could get back in the car and drive away, and have the hood fly open at highway speed, very dangerous! on this car i disconnected the latch cable, and rerouted it.

Drivers door check strap spot has weld failed and the door makes a clicking sound when you open or shut the drivers side door. because of the manufacturing failure you do have to slam the door shut to make sure it is all the way closed or it will not latch properly and open up when you are driving. this is an ongoing problem . toyota has issued a warranty extension to fix the problem but unfortunately a lot of the vehicles manufacture safety defects are void past the warranty extensions and the costumer was not notified of the warranty extension before warranty voided and it is up to the consumers to fix the problem on their own at their own out of pocket cost. this is a manufacturer defect and safety issue.

Front driver and passenger seat belts constantly folding over and getting stuck in retracting mechanism. this happens whether van is stationary or driving. pull out seat belt to buckle, it gets folded and stuck on the way back in. then it won't go in or out.

Husband pulled into parking spot in front of a store, he was completely stopped in the spot and before he could put in park it suddenly accelerated full rev, hopped the curb and hit the building. while up against the building it was still in full rev. finally it stopped and he backed it back over the curb. van went about three feet into the building. tire on front passenger side was flattened. van has been totaled. thank god no one was in front of our van.

It was in the accident and the airbag did not deploy. it always has the light on

Cpsc:i currently own 2 2005 toyota sienna minivans. i've had one for at least 8 years (now has ~212,000 miles and the other i purchased in the last month (has ~127,000). the engine in my original van has been wonderful however currently you cannot open either of the sliding side doors, with the automatic option or manually. the automatic feature broke. *bf updated the consumer stated the vehicle's hatch door would not always close and the sliding doors have come off track and become inoperative. 08/18/2017*js

Passenger side automatic sliding door stopped working 5 years ago so we used it manually. door stopped working manually 2 years ago. driver side sliding door was not automatic. one year ago began not working intermittently. now you cannot open the door from the inside. this posses a great safety hazard. passengers in the rear two rows of the van cannot open either door in an emergency.

I was backing out of my garage and i have an l shaped driveway. i was going approx. 2mph and then i took my foot off the gas and was "covering" the brake and suddenly the car began to accelerate and i tried to brake, but the car slammed into a parked car and still did not stop. it continued to accelerate until i ended up in the street. i was trying to brake the entire time, but the car did not stop and continued to accelerate. my foot was not on the gas. we live on a residential street in the suburbs and luckily no one was hurt. the sienna and the parked car both have extensive body damage.

The right side (passenger) headlight went out. replacement of the light bulb (which was a whopping 190.00) did not solve the problem. was told that it is a special type of hid light which has a headlamp control module aka ballast aka computer that could be bad. dealer quoted $600 to fix a headlight. my other repair shop quoted $450. really toyota? $450-600 to fix a headlight???? ridiculous. no one should have to pay this much to fix a headlight. who engineered this? beyond frustrated.

Airbag light turn on with no reason

I've noticed a crack that has appeared on the dashboard (near glove compartment) at the passenger side going towards the radio player. there's another crack on the dashboard near the vent on the driver's side. i've done my research regarding this and found that it is a known issue for 2005 toyota sienna. i've contacted a representative of toyota dealership in tysons, va for them to take a look. i also wanted to file a formal complaint regarding this issue.

Mileage 128,054 airbag light went gone off. toyota saying the entire airbag system needs to be replace. they performed a hard computer rest. 02/13/17 - 02/25/17 (current) the light comes on at different times…. light comes on when car is started in park light comes on once the car is started and the driver seat belt is connected light comes on once the car is started, driver seat belt connected and the car is in drive. the dealership replaced the dashboard on a recall and since then the airbag light has been on.

In stationary mode my sliding doors will not open, or will open intermittently, or will not open at all or will not close at all or will not latch. the passenger door would not close all the way and so i had to drive home with the door unlatched and beeping at me staying part way open even while operating the vehicle. i see that the 2005 toyota sienna was given an extra 9 years warranty for this issue or 120k miles, my car has only 110k miles and has the same issues as the nhtsa campaign number: 16v858. both doors were affected within a week of each other. the dealer diagnosed the actuator motors on both sides as coincidentally going out at the same time but replacing the actuator motor on the passenger side did not fix the issue. after removing the passenger door they say that the cable is bad and the clutch is worn out on the motor/part that moves the door is bad or broken. the first night i saw the problem the car alarm came on really muffled and ran the battery down so the battery had to be replaced. this may have been associated with the door is my thinking since all this happened within a few hours of each event. (this door has been frozen shut twice since i have owned the vehicle and had to wait for it to thaw to get it to open or shut.) this vehicle has not had heavy use, only light use.

Seat belts won't be able to retract. it is getting worse and worse.

When the liftgate is open electronically, it falls about 10 inches after it reaches the fully open position at which point the power motor will engage and power the liftgate to the fully closed position. the liftgate safety operation does not go back into open position with children underneath the liftgate until after injury. there needs to be recall before major injury happens to a child. these children are getting their backpacks without paying attention to the liftgate and it is closing on them!

Driver and passenger front seat belts do not retract properly. it gives driver and front passenger a sense that the seatbelts work only to find the seatbelt is loose at the waist. a known problem by toyota in the 2016 "campaign" whereby they installed driver and front passenger seatbelts. here it is 2020 and the exact same issue is happening.

Brakes abs not working. can't find out why. sometimes i have brakes, sometimes i don't. lighrs come on and off. looked up recalls descriptions show tge same recalled issues but my car has zero recalls. driving in traffic ,brake pedal goes to the floor. no brakes. i got out of traffic and parked car in driveway. pebdemic came. now i need to find a way to fix it.

The right front passenger seatbelt frequently binds up in the top guide area. the seatbelt is not usable.

The front seat belts gets tangled. it takes a lot of time and effort to get it untangled. most recently i was unable to get it untangled so i had to take it to my garage to get it untangled. very serious safety problem if it get tangled while i am out running errands and cannot get it untangled so i can drive home. hazardous and should be recalled!

I have a toyota sienna 2005, mileage 178000, slip indicator turns on randomly and causing the car lost control. it is extremely dangerous when it happened out of zero warning. it's not only scare me but also my children in the car. it has been happened for over a year since sept. 2019. it usually happens when driving on dry curving roads at speeds 35-75 mph. when it happened, the antilock brakes engage, slip indicator light comes on, and alarm sounds, the car’s brakes grab and pulls the car to the side. it happens randomly, goes away, and back to normal. i have sent the mini van to a few mechanics for multiple times but they can't find out what's wrong with it. i have replaced 4 brand new tires, done the zero-point-calibration, mechanics couldn't find codes for the issues, they have tried everything to diagnose and fix the problems but it just never work. i love my mini van but now i feel very unsafe to drive my family with this mini van. it bothers me a lot when driving this mini van. my anxiety level go up, especially, when driving on curving roads. i wish this safety complaint would catch the attention. hopefully, toyota would recall the vehicles and fix the issue for their loyal customers, and also the safety of the people and their families riding this mini van.

I have been having problems with the traction control. the light will randomly turn on, which brakes the wheels. the system will start beeping and saying a false traction control problem. (when the road is clear) i looked online many toyota siennas have this issue. it is dangerous and should be recalled to be fixed!

The shifter locks up in park and won't come out of gear. if the van is running or off it won't come out of gear. having the parking brake on makes no difference. have to rock the van back and forth to get it out of gear.

I’ve only had the van for 5 months and this problem has occurred over a dozen times, beginning with the day i bought it. and every time this problem has occurred i’ve been driving on dry roads. it usually happens when driving around a corner, anywhere from 35-65 mph, far. all of a sudden the traction control light starts beeping, the brakes engage on their own, and then engine makes a loud noise (likely downshifting itself). it’s as though the vehicle thinks it is slipping, even though it is not, i drive very cautiously so it’s not me flying around a corner super fast, it also happens when my partner drives the van as well. i finally took the van to a mechanic and they told me it was the steering angle sensor that was faulty and needed to be replaced, so i spent $900 to have it replaced. i’ve had the van back for less then 2 weeks and just tried to take it on a road trip, got about an hour from our house and it did it again 3 times in less then 15 minutes, again driving on dry pavement and when driving on a windy highway. it’s terrifying when this happens especially because it always happens when we’re going around a corner, it’s very dangerous and scary. it seems to be happening with a lot of other sienna’s, even newer ones. this is an expensive problem that desperately needs to be addressed, someone is going to wreck and die from this if they haven’t already.

Air conditioner blend door actuator has stopped working on the drivers side front seat. it always blows hot air whether i select cool or heat. the passenger side changes as selected.

Door check broke loose at weld to door frame on drivers side front door. cost over $500 to have a new one installed. didn't really notice when it happened, just when it didn't work anymore (the door would swing open wider without stopping) (about november 2015).

Slip indicator sensor turns on ,brakes while turning causes me too loose control while driving very unsafe

On numerous occasions, the front passenger safety belt has gotten bound up and stuck in the guide on the a pillar. this has happened while putting on the belt, as well as while the vehicle is in motion. i’m concerned that if this happens during a collision the front passenger will not be properly restrained and could be injured. i have been able to free the belt with tools before, but am no longer able to do so.

Continuous issues with traction control system almost daily. any time vehicle veers towards the right anti-slip indicator light, alarm sounds and abs system activates. this happens almost daily, on dry roads, going downhill or on a curve, even while switching lanes now. this happens above 20 mph. driving becomes stressful and worry-some when alarm begins to sound and dash light come on. fear of losing control becomes great, fear for your passengers safety as well as other drivers safety becomes real. during the past 3 months there have been 5 separate incidents in which the vehicle has lost acceleration, pulls steering in one direction and sudden break lock occurs. 2 of which took place on the freeway on ramp at a speed of 35mph, 1 driving downhill, slightly towards the right, at a speed if 20mph and the last 2 while switching lanes, 35 mph. vehicle began losing power and slowing instead of increasing speed. there are many complaints regarding this issue with many drivers in many areas. why isn't this being investigated? *tr

My 2005 sienna has shift gear problem. the shift level moved out of the park position, get stucked.

The traction control system is activating improperly. the vehicle's anti-slip indicator warning light illuminates; an alarm sounds; the abs system activates; and the vehicle sometimes loses power. this happens on dry roads, most commonly either going downhill or else on a curve, even a mild one. this happens above 20 mph. when it happens, the combination of alerts and sensations are very startling to the driver, creating a dangerous situation. it has occurred while trying to accelerate to merge onto a highway. this was exceptionally dangerous as the vehicle began losing power and vehicles behind us almost hit us from behind as we were slowing instead of increasing speed. from my internet searches (including nhtsa complaints), this appears to be a recurring issue with this make/model/year range. this has been happening for the past 3 months. our vehicle has approximately 135,000 miles on the odometer.

Parking break does not engage until after several tries of engagement. and many times does not engage at all. grade location of the vehicle does not matter (e.g. horizontal to >% deg). attempts are only made while vehicle is in park. (it is not attempted while vehicle is in drive, reverse or neutral)

Driver side door is making loud noise when door is opened or closed. this popping noise is coming from door check pocket. after examine door check pocket, the popping sound is because pocket is detached form the door frame due to insufficiently and poor welding. the force of opening the door causes it to breakaway from the door frame. i noticed 2017 nhtsa id number: 11002982 has the same issue. youtube also has incidents regarding this.

Since 7/2019 to now, 10/2019, i've had intermittent hard brake pedal. letting up on the gas pedal, the van begins to stop right away. there's no rhyme or reason for the hard brake pedal, its affecting the front right wheel, and it smells bad. there's a vibration at times, and wobble. after the van sits for an hour, the brakes are fine until next time. today, backing out of a parking spot, it was difficult to put the van in reverse, and letting off the brake, the van wouldn't roll back. i had to give it quite a bit of gas to get it to move. the van didn't want to go more than 10mph in a 35mph zone. all of this has happened since a new brake booster was installed. there is a new caliper on that right side, and both front brakes got new brake lines. the pads still have a lot of meat on them. i can drive the van just fine, then sometimes get back in the van later, 1 to 6 hours later, and the brake pedal is hard. it occurs when the van has been sitting all night and half the next day, or it can happen when i'm driving it. there is something wrong with the brakes on my 2005 sienna. nobody can figure it out.

When driving at any speed above 25 mph, the traction control light on the dashboard will come on, it will beep and the brake will engage without the driver pressing the brake pedal (these all happen at the same time). this in turn locks the brakes at times and the car veers to the right. there is no reason that we can figure out that this happens. it has happened many times and three days ago, it happened twice in one day. we have taken our vehicle to hendrick toyota in wilmington nc and provided them a video where two owners took videos each time it happened in their vehicle. i also provided them with email discussions from two different web sites where owners were discussing the issue. we believe this should be a recall for toyotas.

The passenger side seat belts when pulled out to enable the passengers to buckle can become folded and lodged in the opening at the pillar preventing the belt to move further. this renders the belt useless until the passenger can dislodge it from the opening. it can take as much as 20 minutes to free/or dislodge the belt from it's pinched position.

Steering becomes stiff and makes it hard to turn the steering wheel while driving. the steering knuckle outside of the fire wall is exposed to the elements and becomes stiff and requires frequent lubrication to maintain the function of the power steering. this is a concern we have dealt with for a number of years and we have recently become aware that it is a common problem with this van.

Emissions fail, pre mature failure of catalytic converters (2) , part not lasting ,subject to premature rusting , a problem for most of toyota cars

The passenger side automatic sliding door will not open in either automatic or manual mode from the inside. it will open if someone pulls the handle from the outside. possible motor and or cable problem. there are similar complaints i found on the internet. it started intermittently about a year ago but now it’s permanent and can only be opened from pulling on the outside door handle.

Both right and left rear doors will not open using the mechanical assembly or disabling the mechanical assembly. this happens when trying to exit or enter the car. my son has to climb through the front seat. very inconvenient.

The dash board is cracked on or near the passenger side air bag. i feel this could be a problem for the passenger if activated. toyota knew of this problem and had a recall which ended my 2017. i was never notified of this recall. a check with toyota and they state nothing can be done.

Vsc system activates the abs while driving under normal conditions. usually on interstate entrance/exit ramps, the vsc light comes on with loud beeping noise and activates the anti-lock brakes. the vehicle pulls either to the left or right and acceleration is affected. it's very scary! speed limit on ramp is 55mph and it happens when going 45-50mph. it's also happened while driving 35 mph. it happens at multiple locations. i've had the car checked by 3 different shops and nobody can figure out what's going on. it's a weekly occurrence.

The gear shifter is flopping back and forth and i'm afraid it will go into neutral and cause a huge accident or roll out of park and hurt someone.

Airbag light for driver side blinks off and on during driving at speeds between 35-45 mph. this occurred at 209,560 +/- miles. this is occuring with other issues in the electrical modules including abs control malfunction, power supply voltage yaw/deceleration sensor and it loses communication with steering angle sensor module. this seems to not only be an issue with my vehicle but others as well from reading many forums on toyota sienna vans including ones just a few years old.

Check engine light, vsc and trac off. as i was driving after just purchasing this vehicle from a dealer after about 60 miles or so these lights all came on the same time. i was told after a scanner was placed on the vehicles computer system that it is due to either catalytic convertor/o2 sensor malfunctions.this is an important exhaust and emission component designed to burn up toxic exhaust fumes that sets off these lights. this is a major issue with not only this vehicle but other toyotas. this needs to be addressed. we in the usa would like to breath clean air and it doesn't seem feasible to have to continue to "fix" these sensors designed to make consumers spend large amounts of money to fix their vehicles.

While driving at 55 mph highway speed and curving gently to the right, the vsc system on this minivan evidently picked up a false indication of a slip in the vehicle's traction. this caused the car to automatically apply the brakes on the left side, pulling the van's direction from right to left, and slow the car quickly from 55 to 35 mph, with vehicles behind me quickly closing in on the rear end. within seconds the automatic braking ceased and i was able to reaccelerate back to normal highway driving speed. the engine was not stalled in the process.

I own a 2005 toyota sienna van and have been bragging on it to everyone except for one big problem that has haunted me since 2016. the problem is that it has faulty seat belts that were installed in this van and they were recalled. it took forever to convince adams of lee’s summit to replace them because they didn’t do it every time. my husband [xxx] fought with [xxx] of lee’s summit dealership on several occasions trying to get the original recall performed because the seatbelts would not do it every time. in the mean time i was forced to carry a small screwdriver a forced to sit in parking lots in danger as i fought to try and untangle the crossover of the seatbelt. than after many trips they finally replaced the seatbelts. within a year the post height adjustment broke on the drivers side and it broke in the up tallest position wear my 6’ 2” husband needs it. i am a 5’5” women with disabilities and having to constantly fight with these seatbelts to go to my doctors appointments is horrible. so now it sits across my throat, very painful and unsafe. he has taken back to the dealer two times and they refuse to honor their work or part. first time on 05/02/2017 which was less than a year after it was replaced, noted as body/interior repair order. they refused to repair it. second time we brought it up again at an oil change on 7/3/2018 they also refused. they were paid to install it under warranty it should come with some type of a warranty with this installation. seatbelts are designed to be worn across our legs and across our shoulder, not our neck. i feel something needs to be done for my safety. you attention to this problem would be greatly appreciate. sincerely, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

While driving approximately 10 - 15 mph under the speed limit on a gently curving overpass, the stability control engaged, sharply jerking the steering uncontrollably in the wrong direction and hindering my ability to steer the vehicle or brake. this has happened twice previously, both on curves, and on neither of those occasions was i exceeding the speed limit, nor was there any reason for the system to engage.

June 14, 2018 re: toyota sienna dashboard cover recall complaint my local dealer, fred anderson toyota of columbia, promised to replace my 05 sienna dashboard cover under a toyota warranty, on july 3rd, 2015, and that they would order the dashboard cover part and that they would call me when it arrived. the service advisor i met with in person each time was mr. ron kirkland. i followed up again on december 17, 2015, when they again told me that the part was not available and that it was on order, and that they would notify me when it arrived. i followed up by phone a few times in 2016, and early in 2017. i got the same reply each time i spoke with mr. kirkland. i then followed up again in person on july 26, 2017. i got the same reply from mr. kirkland. on june 11, 2018, i again spoke with mr. kirkland regarding the lack of progress in completing this recall work. he promised to look into it, and phone me when he had an answer. i followed up again with mr. kirkland on june 14, 2018, when mr. kirkland stated that toyota was no longer able to honor this warranty work. i voiced my displeasure about toyota, and mr. kirklands lack of professionalism in resolving this warranty service in a timely manner back in 2015. i asked one final question of mr. kirkland, how much would it cost me if i paid for the dashboard cover replacement? he gave me an estimate of $2,000. more than 50% of the current value of the sienna. i am now attempting to contact everyone and anyone who will listen, in an attempt to get this situation resolved – honoring the dashboard cover replacement as toyota promised me in 2015.

The shift stick was loose and would move in any direction. if the car was driving on d and someone was to tap the stick shift slightly up or down, the stick would move even when the car was in motion and brakes were not pressed. any major bumps would cause the shift to move loosely from its proper place as well.

My toyota sienna has 80,000 miles and has gear hunting, when i go on a speed bump it surges and hesitates, i don’t feel safe at all. i’ve previously owned other toyota’s with problems not like this. please help. i love toyota, but i value safety.

Dashboard was replaced in a recall and after the service was performed the airbag inflated light remained on. the dealer said that it was something to do with a sensor and was not related to the work they had performed, yet said it needed to have a diagnostic performed and they wanted to charge for that and for any other work done as a result of it. how could they possibly know it’s unrelated to the work they performed if they had not done the diagnostic and it had never had this problem before they worked on it?. i feel strongly that they are just trying to avoid having to do any extra work it’s not covered by warranty or paid for. as a result this is creating a highly unsafe situation with a false reading and not knowing if the airbags will accidentally deploy or if they will function properly in an accident. this is putting my family and i at risk

Cable on spare tire carrier under vehicle broke and fortunately spare tire appeared to have bounced away form vehicle and in to lava field. could have been so much worse. local dealership stated they have no information regarding a recall on the spare tire carrier. however, i see it reflected on line. i have a broken spare tire carrier and cannot locate the spare anywhere if the field. toyota usa states to contact servco but they are of no help.

Passenger seat warmer was on the other day while i was driving and began smoking and melted the seat in the shape of a dime. for a couple weeks it was causing burning feeling in legs from being too hot. i turned off seat warmer and hit the seat until the smoking stopped.

While the vehicle was stationary, the sliding side door closed on my son's fingers, and they got jammed in the door. the sensor on the sliding door did not work, when it should have not closed when it hit my son's fingers.

From driving normal speed, car cap out at 20 mph at highway. almost got into wreck. check engine light came on as is happened. i took it to auto zone . manager checked and said it happened to his 2014 corolla, toyota covered variable transmission celenoid under recall. he said to call toyota or dealership. dealership is saying, there is no recall for this kind of safety issue.

The drivers side door. when open and closing the door, there is a very loud clicking. i was told that there is a crack in the door near the top hing that is connected to the door.

Vsc keeps engaging / with lights and alarms, the car looses power and pulls to right. this occurs unnecessarily at different speeds below 20 mph and at 65 mph on a freeway straight away and on & off ramps of the freeway. this is happening with dry / good weather operation. i have owned this vehicle for 1 week and have had this happen at least a dozen time.

"takata recall" problem within the shift lock assembly, the shift lever moves out of the 'park' position without depressing the brake pedal.

I pulled into a parking spot and put the van in park (with my foot still on the brake). i took my foot off the brake and it continued to roll forward. i quickly put my foot back on the brake and it stopped moving. i then shifted back to drive and then back to park. i lifted my foot off the brake and the van continued to roll forward (even though it was in park). i put my foot back on the brake to stop it from moving. i shifted into reverse, lifted my foot off the brake and the van still rolled forward. i quickly put my foot back on the brake and turned off the ignition. with the ignition off the van stopped moving. i waited about 30 min. and tried again, at that time the van wouldn't even start (no sound). i had the van towed to my mechanic (it was a saturday). i am waiting for my mechanic to look at it. i searched on line by vin number and found out there was a recall for my van for a gear shift malfunction. i never received notice from toyota about this.

Shift gear stuck in neutral mode for toyota sienna 2005. driving sienna out of my garage in reverse, then stepped on brake--to proceed to move gear to drive mode. then van got stuck in neutral mode. attempted to move shift lever all the way back to p to get out of n mode, and nothing happened. light stays on "n" position. looked at vehicle manual to follow directions ie. if can't shift automatic transmission lever... ignition key to lock, park brake on. push down shift lock override button. shift out of p position only while using a button. shift to "n" position, start engine while keeping brake pedal depressed. will have to have van towed to toyota dealer. this happened at home in the driveway outside of the garage. i was reversing out of the garage to drive out of the driveway to road.. i will need to contact toyota for an appointment first and hire a tow company to deliver to toyota dealer. also, when engine is turned on and stepping on car brake, shift lever moves to p, r, n ,d, and lower gears but is permanently stuck in "n" mode is my best explanation. fortunately, this incident occurred at home and not on the road, highway or other area of traffic. i can only assume some kind of cable/mechanism broke. botton line, gear won't get out of neutral mode, even with steps as noted from vehicle manual.

While on the road, infrequently as we start hitting continuous curves, the beeping starts with slip control symbol coming on. the brakes engage on their own. it doesn't seem to matter how fast or slow we take the curves. i have no control over the vehicle at that point and it starts braking itself for few seconds. very dangerous on the curves and especially if someone is behind you.

The gear shift lever on our 2005 toyota sienna became loose and wobbly. the vehicle was in park and my wife shifted into reverse. she heard a noise like something had broken and fallen to the floor behind the gear shift lever. the lever was loose and wobbly after that. the dealer said there was no recall for our particular sienna.

Abs lights activate going at speeds from 15-60 on any type of curves then starts braking automatically. this situation has been going on for a while and as late as this past weekend (10 times) on highway 299 west from redding,ca. - eureka, ca. these sensors need to be recalled.

The drivers side seat belt gets twisted with retraction & gets stuck in the extended position causing a safety concern

I was completely stopped in my sienna awd at a traffic light at the top of a freeway on-ramp in a major city, and rear-ended by a vehicle beginning to travel down the on-ramp at an unknown but high rate of speed and not heeding the traffic signal. on impact, the rear cargo compartment of my sienna crushed inward so far that it caused the third row bench seat to move forward and propel the seat part of the bench seat into the backs of the second row captain's chairs in front of it. this would have crushed the legs and maybe whole body of anyone seated in the outer two seats of the rear bench seat, and perhaps in the middle position as well. i found a piece of paper bag caught between the bottom seat edge of the bench seat and the back of a captain's chair, and i could not pull that piece of paper free. i had to pull really hard to remove the large pack of toilet tissue, shown in the uploaded photo, in order to dislodge it from the rear bench seat area. the tissue pack likely is narrower than the trunk of an adult human body which could have been caught there, with legs also crushed by the lower portion of the bench seat as it impacted the back of the captain's chair in front of it. i believe the cause of this safety problem is a poor design; inadequate rear-crash protection for third-row passengers, who usually are children. as a parent and vehicle owner, i was never warned about the great danger my children could be in if they seated anywhere along the third-row bench seat during a rear-end collision. i'm traumatized by the thought of a child or anyone having been seated in the third row at the time of this collision, which fortunately they were not in this instance.

Two instances in oct 2017 of brakes activating without driver action. braking accompanied by beeping - possibly electronic stability control (esc) activation signal. braking reduced speed approximately 10-15mph. both instances occurred on the same road, a curvy 45mph limit asphalt 2-lane. conditions dry, ~50 deg f. braking occurred on a straight section and did not pull the car to one side. do not believe anti-lock engaged. van has 137k miles.toyota service (11/9/17) : "no problems found no codes stored no vehicle event log (vehicle does not have that capability) more obvious and likely cause could have been the fact that the front tires were at 20 psi and the rear at 35 psi, the disparity in wheel speed signals could have triggered a false event." verbal report confirmed "no problems found" including steering rack bushings, steering angle sensor, and wheel speed sensors. the service representative, with 6 years experience as a mechanic, said he had encountered this problem before but it was rare. he also stated that an apparent difference of only 1mph in wheel speed could be enough to cause inadvertent esc activation. however, he was unsure why the problem, if it was caused by the fore/aft inflation difference, was so intermittent. the dealer waived the $98 diagnostic fee. a drive on the same road on 11/10/17 did not produce the unexpected braking, but it is unclear whether this means the equal tire inflation fixed the problem as, as stated, the problem was intermittent. systems designed to improve safety should fail in ways that do not compromise driver control and owners should be made aware of critical maintenance procedures to avoid such failures. failure of active safety systems such as esc, risks delaying acceptance of increasing levels of driver assistance including full autonomous control, an advance that promises dramatic reduction in road mortality.

This report includes two separate safety issues. first issue: after backing out of my driveway onto my street, my car would not shift into drive gear from reverse. the engine would not restart after turning the key off since it was still in reverse, even though the lever was shifted back to park. thankfully, i don't live on a busy street and there happened to be a few linemen doing work that were able to push the van back into my driveway. with two young children in the car and not being able to push the van on my own, this could've been a very dangerous situation in a busy location. after disassembling the dash, my husband discovered the mechanism in the gear shift had malfunctioned and was able to repair it himself instead of towing it to a toyota dealer for pricey repairs and towing fees. second issue: on multiple occasions (usually, but not always, while accelerating onto a highway on-ramp) the traction control light will illuminate, a repetitive beeping will sound, and the steering wheel vibrates and becomes difficult to control since it freezes up. this has happened on dry roads and smooth driving conditions only when no traction control is needed. each time is happens it is a stressful experience since it could be lead to an accident due to lack of control. after calling a toyota service center to inquire if there are any known issues of this, they deny it. upon doing our own research, we were able to discover other people with the same issue. a very similar replication of our situation is shown in this video. the only difference is that ours doesn't happen as often in one drive. it usually will happen a one or two times and then not happen again for weeks or months. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sy9a8shj0xg

Shift control didn't work and van rolled away. we also had an issue backing out of our garage and the car sped up and went out of control. the van was out of control and finally stopped out in the street. this van scared the day lights out of us. complete defect

I made an appointment and showed up 15 minutes early at 11:15am for my appointment at a the toyota service center on 4th avenue in san francisco. i have two recalls issues on my 2005 sienna (shift lock solenoid and corrosion of the spare tire carrier) and this super annoying and unsafe locking of my front seat belts both on the driver and passenger side. the seat belt issue should be covered under a warranty enhancement - zf2. it took them 5 hours to fix both recall but they refuse to fix my seat belt issue. at first, they said they couldn't replicate the issue. i drove off and what do you know, the seat beat got stuck again! i drove back to the service center and show my service person. he jerked the seat belt left and right to loosen it and then said this "just happens" and there is nothing they can do about it. he said the warranty enhancement was for the retractor mechanism and not for the folding seatbelt issue. i said, this is obviously a defect in the design of the seatbelt holder/attachment and toyota should fix it. was told, "nope, sorry, can't help you." i was so mad. wasted a whole day and didn't get the most important issue to me fixed. toyota is no longer caring about its customer.

Front passenger side seat belt jammed and won't retract. it happens so often even after de-assembled it and put back together

I have a 2005 toyota sienna and three other toyota vehicles. because i vacation and my extended families live in trinidad i shipped the vehicle there for my used. when i saw the recall, it was the shift lock solenoid assembly. for more than a year i tried to have toyota resolved this problem. nowhere in the recall notice say anything about the vehicle location. it's a worldwide recall, so i thought it can be fixed at a toyota dealership in trinidad. i was told that they would look into it. i said if they gave me the part i can take it there and have the authorized dealer install the part. now it a problem because they say the vehicle can only be fixed in the usa. it never said anything about that in the notice. i believed toyota have a responsibility to fix my vehicle with some kind of working together with me to resolve this matter. what can you do to help me in this matter, i don't owe anything. i am still paying for 2 of my new toyota cars. the part in the shift interlock system has a component the shift lock solenoid which prevent the shift lever from moving out of the "p" position unless the ignition is on and the brakes pedal is depressed. there is a possibility that the solenoid could be damage and the shift lever could moved out of "p" position with depressing the brake pedal. resulting in the vehicle roll away, which could cause a crash.

While driving at approximately 40 mph and entering a left turn curve, the abs and vsc lights activated and the vehcle lurched violently to the right then back to thge left. i was able to regain control after a few seconds, but during this time time i was not able to steer properly. the vehicle was taken to an independent service facility. the brakes and stability control were inspected. there were not any trouble codes stored. examination of the wheel speed sensors revealed the right and left sensors were seized in their mounting brackets. we believe the sensors have rusted and have swollen. we had the abs and vsc systems disconnected. the problem has not occurred since this was done. we are planning on replacing these sensor in the near future. this is a very serious condition and needs to be investigated.

I have experienced numerous problems with the doors on my 2005 toyota sienna awd xle. although all of the doors were previously repaired under warranty, the problems continue with front doors squeaking, the back sliding door automatic door does not open and the rear hatch fails to close.

On several occasions the vehicle stability control (vsc) on my 2005 toyota sienna awd xle (127,000 miles) is activated suddenly and for no reason. this is intermittent and happens when on a curve at varying speeds on perfect road and weather conditions. a buzzer sounds, vsc light comes on, brakes slam on and vehicle pulls to the right. mechanic could find not anything. toyota dealership had not heard of this problem. a google search revealed many similar complaints. this is frightening, dangerous and creates unsafe conditions for passengers in my vehicle, as well as other drivers on the road as the car suddenly and drastically reduces speed and pulls to the right. many others are experiencing the same problem and should be recalled. any defective part that poses a safety risk should be recalled by law! it seems that most people experiencing this problem are outside of their warranty.

The sliding doors continue to malfunction where you can't open and get out of the vehicle, causing the potential for people (e.g. kids, disabled folks, older people) to be unable to get out. this has happened multiple times now on the passenger side where the automatic door will not open and the manual override does not work. once due to an actuator, several times caused by a crappy cable mechanism, and now a forth time due to who knows what. the dealer this time told us it would cost $275 to take the door apart before he could diagnose the problem. we have already spent $3,000 for the past times the door would not open. my disabled sister got stuck in the damn car and had to be moved out the other side which was extremely difficult. what if there is an accident and a person can't get out? i see hundreds of the same complaint on websites, and looking at only three add up over 1000 complaints, all on the same door issue. multiple times we were traveling with small children and the passenger sliding door would not totally close. what were we to do? once the cable assembly snapped and we could not close it. toyota has to be aware of this issue and should be made to replace the door with a different design or just with a manual one that people can open and close.

When i shift to parking position the vehicle continue running. you could run over a person or a kid by accident.

On several occasions the vehicle stability control on my 2005 toyota sienna xle is activated suddenly and for no reason. it has happened changing lanes on the freeway, on off ramps, and city streets. i was never going over the speed limit, turning sharply, and the road was not wet or slippery. the activation caused my car to rapidly decelerate from 50 mph to 20 mph in a matter of seconds and caused my wife, children, and i to lurch forward. vsc also caused my vehicle to swerve sharply to the right. i had immediately lost control! this put me and my family in mortal danger along with the occupants of vehicles around us. they were completely unprepared for my sudden and unwarranted stop! i believe toyota has sold a vehicle that has a hardware and/or software error in it that can result in fatal injuries to the driver, passengers and occupants of surrounding vehicles. this is why i believe the national highway transportation safety administration should require toyota to issue a safety recall that permanently eliminates this problem for toyota owners like me. like others i believe this situation is far more serious than your recent recall of the toyota shift lever assembly to prevent an accidental roll away. (nhtsa campaign number: 13v429000). in our case we are driving at highway speeds when without warning the car suddenly slams on the brakes and veers to the left. i have read others complaints that are almost identicle. please do not wait for injuries and deaths to resolve this issue!

Passenger's side power door will not open. it seems it fails releasing the latch.

Driver and passenger seat belts are not retracting properly when fasten. as a result, the seat belt has too much slack and this will not protect the occupants from an accident or bodily injury. the drivers belt also has become frayed.

Door check mounting pocket welds broke and torn sheet metal. with this assembly broken the drivers window will only open 1/2 way with the door closed as the pocket assembly blocks the window from opening all the way. so i understand this is a known problem with toyota from 2004-2007. if something would happen that required vehicle evacuation thru the drivers window it would be impossible when the window does not fully open because of a known defect.

On march 15, 2016, the vehicle stability control on my 2005 toyota sienna xle activated suddenly and for no reason. i was in a left turn merging lane from one major highway to a busy interstate. i was going about 50 mph when it activated. the activation caused my car to rapidly decelerate from 50 mph to 20 mph in a matter of 3 seconds and caused my wife and i to lurch forward. vsc also caused my vehicle to swerve sharply to the right. i had immediately lost control! this put me and my family in mortal danger along with the occupants of vehicles around us. they were completely unprepared for my sudden and unwarranted stop! i believe toyota has sold a vehicle that has a hardware and/or software error in it that can result in fatal injuries to the driver, passengers and occupants of surrounding vehicles. this is why i believe the national highway transportation safety administration should require toyota to issue a safety recall that permanently eliminates this problem for toyota owners like me. (as background, i did some internet research to see if others have experienced this. i've attached my findings of 23 identical incidents experienced by sienna owners. i stopped at 23 - there were more.) i believe this situation is far more serious than your recent recall of the toyota shift lever assembly to prevent an accidental roll away. (nhtsa campaign number: 13v429000). in our case we are driving at highway speeds when without warning the car suddenly slams on the brakes and veers to the right. i believe this calls for your immediate action. personally, i think this is just as serious as a car going down the highway that suddenly bursts into flames. i know you would issue a recall to that car company and i believe you should issue a similar recall to toyota.

The driver seat belt will not retract causing it to be completely useless.

My car has the exact symptoms for a recall involving a crankshaft pulley, yet my vin is apparently not involved with that recall. my engine model 3mz-fe is involved with the recall yet toyota service dealerships and toyota customer experience both say it isn't. currently my car is not safe to drive according to the service dealership and a fee of roughly $800 awaits me. i do not understand how my make, model, model year, engine model, can all be related to a certain recall, and yet be told that my car does not qualify for that recall. i've been a loyal toyota customer for years recommending friends and family. extremely disappointed, and most likely won't purchase another toyota.

Very stiff when turning. steering seems to lock and making a turn and returning to normal driving position is faulty, i took it to two mechanics and they both said it was the rack and pinion that had to be replaced. in looking at the database i see that this problem does exist with the toyota sienna. recall should be initiated as this poses a very serious problem.

Extremely hard steering has been frequently a problem (accompanied by a loud squeal) during the first minute after start up, particularly in the cold. now i have noticed a sudden steering difficulty on a turn while driving long after start up.

"takata recall" we purchased our vehicle about a year ago and do love our sienna. the vehicle will down shift and the traction control kicks in while we are in a curve. it is so bad that it almost comes to a stop and skids around the curve. it doesn't matter if you are going 30 or 45. it happens several times while driving on a daily basis. we have took our vehicle to a mechanic and they have hooked it to their machine and can not seem to tell what is going on with it. i am very concerned because i carry my small children and am afraid the vehicle is going to cause me to wreck. we have been told that it could be several different things and that it is going to be trial and error to find out which one it may be. while costing us hundreds, even thousands of dollars. this morning my husband went to the toyota dealership and the guy told him that he is more than sure that it is the "yaw" rate sensor, he has seen it on several toyota's. he has seen this on several toyotas and that toyota themselves will not fix the problem. i understand that my vehicle is out of warranty but i am very upset because it sounds like there is a problem with that particular part on many vehicles yet toyota will do nothing about it! i do not understand why i should be out money for a faulty part. make no mistake i will not be purchasing another toyota for this reason. if toyota will not make the effort to fix the problem why would i purchase another vehicle made by them, it is bad customer service. if this was something that i had caused myself i could understand. just this past summer we replaced the air conditioner, i did not want toyota to fix that because it is normal vehicle maintenance. this is something that toyota needs to deal with and fix because their vehicle is not safe!!!!

Very dangerous situation: toyota sienna 2005 vsc (anti skid system) kicks in unexpectedly for no reason. numerous times i have been driving straight along dry roads only to have my abs (antilock braking system) suddenly come on, the van slow down, with the vsc alarm going off, and the vsc light blinking. it's very scary, especially on the highway, and it becomes hard to control the van. this has happened at high (~55 mph) as well as low (~25-30mph) speeds. i drive 90% on smooth, well-paved suburban roads, and about 10% on highways. the frequency of this defect is definitely increasing. one day it happened 4 times in one trip! all for no reason, and all under dry, normal driving conditions on smooth, suburban roads. my van has 113k miles on the odometer. this defect creates a very dangerous situation where the vehicle slows suddenly and unexpectedly, and swerves to one side without warning. i can't understand how there hasn't been a recall yet. a quick search online shows many people have had this exact same experience.

2005 sienna, srs airbag light came on while driving. vehicle has not been involved in a crash. connectors were checked and were secure. ran scan on srs with innova 3150 and received error code b0101 "open in d squib circuit". after researching online, it seems to be a common problem in the 2005 and 2006 models. there should be a recall. some dealers just want to replace the entire airbag system, which is an expensive solution. this is a huge safety concern for toyota.

I was driving north on interstate 55/70 approximately 5 miles east of the poplar street bridge when the sunroof shattered. there was no indication of a problem with the roof and nothing was thrown up by or dropped from a vehicle in the area and i was not passing under an overpassing street. the sunroof just shattered on its own dropping glass into the vehicle as well as off the rear of the vehicle. i closed the interior shield to minimize the amount of glass in the vehicle, but glass continued to fall off the back of the vehicle all the way back to orland park.

In the past month, i have had major issues with three of the doors on my 2005 toyota sienna xle. the tab welds on the front driver's door have snapped, the cable on the passenger side sliding door snapped and the driver's side sliding door only works manually. when i called toyota customer care, i was told that the sliding doors would be covered under an extended manufacturers warranty and that the front door, had an extended customer care program because of a known issue with the welds. obviously this was a big relief for me because of the cost of repairing the doors ($ 4,000+). when i was transferred from the call taker to toyota itself, i was then told none of the doors are covered. i was told the doors were covered under an extended customer car warranty because it is a known problem. the extended warranty for the doors has expired so toyota won't cover them. as of now the passenger side slider will not open because the snapped cable jammed the door shut. the driver's door makes two loud "clunks" when open and closed and it is just a matter of time before that door becomes inoperable. i would think that not being able to exit one of the doors would be considered a safety risk and it is obvious toyota knows of this problem because they already had the extended warranty.

Driver side front door -check pocket welding points broken driver side front door was giving click and other noises during open and close. it started about 4 years ago. i thought it may just require a few drops of lubricating oil. eventually, the click noise becomes louder and louder. mid last year, the driver side front door -check pocket gave away. every time you open and close the door, it gives very loud crack and the door is not properly checked. i've found that there are multiple welding points of the pocket to the door body and some welding points gave away over time. but eventually, part of the pocket gave away and it becomes loose. i had cars older than this and never had such issue. it is definitely a quality issue or design flaw. because the door is not properly checked, it may cause safety issue in windy or sloped situation when you open or close door. i contacted toyota and after many emails and phone calls, they replied and said that they won't do anything about it. none of my other cars or my friends cars (not toyota) have such issue even though some of those cars are older and have more mileages. this kind of customer service from toyota is not acceptable. *tr

I have a 2005 toyota sienna ,the drivers side door started making popping sound a few months ago and as the time as gone by it is getting worse and worse. the noise is coming from the door check welds that were welded improperly and the main structure of the door is affected by it. researched the issue and it is a common problem on my type of car, toyota has recognized this problem which affected 600,000 sienna's and issued a warranty enhancement program in 2007 but it ended a few years ago. took it to toyota dealership, they refused to fix the problem because my vin # is not affected by the warranty enhancement and even if my vin # was affected, its too late to take advantage of any help from toyota. i have called toyota corporate, they know all about the issue and will not help me either. everyone from techs, service advisors and mangers they all knows the problem exist but will not fix it because they want the consumer to pay for it. the only reason my vin is not affected is because not enough people have reported this common problem. this same vehicle is also affected by dash crack problem, for years i have complained about it now finally toyota will fix this issue for free. *tr

While putting on the seat belt on the driver's side, the seat belt wound not extend out of its holder to allow the belt to click into its holster. i would have to pull it multiple times or jiggle the holder on the side wall of the van to get it to work. it does not allow the driver to be belted. it has happened multiple times since the start date. *tr

During a routine oil change, i noticed the passenger side, power steering rack and pinion boot had a tear and was leaking. i have read that the leaky seal eats into the boot to deteriorate over time. as i searched the internet for this problem, i noticed their were several other causes of this same issue. i think this demands for a recall. *tr

I received my 1st recall notice (10v-160) in 2010 and the current recall eos (e1s 14v273) arrived in may/2014. it is now march/2015 and still toyota is working on a solution. this is a joke and clearly malfeasance on their part. five years of allowing a very potentially serious problem to go uncorrected seems almost criminal to me. cannot the authorities apply some pressure on toyota or will it take deaths and lawsuits to move a fix along. *tr

Driver side door check strap weld failing, causing door to droop/pop and loosen from frame of body. 100's of other sienna owners are reporting this problem(check carcomplaints.com), and affects the door integrity, therefore causing huge concerns during a potential accident. this may increase the chances of driver door from remaining intact during a collision, or worse a fatality. i have never seen such a weld failure in any new or old vehicles that i have owned, and seems to be a design/assembly error. toyota issued a warranty extension for 5 years from purchase but most welds fail after 6 or more years of operation. structural repairs of this caliber should be done by the factory not at the local repair shop, and must meet crash test tolerances. there are over 100k sienna's on the road, and this should be investigated. toyota was notified of this concern, and could not provide service since warranty has lapsed. it makes you wonder how strong the other hinge welds are.... *tr

I have struggled with how to handle the failure of both power doors on my 2005 toyota sienna van. the doors fail to open and do not close with power without pushing them closed. the problem is that when you push the door past the catch point it will not return if your hand is in the way. when it was originally designed it would go back if your hand was in the door. now if it goes beyond that catch point it lunges and will catch your hand and will not release. the doors have bad hinges and cables which toyota refuses to admit are faulty. they offer and extended warranty for you knowing that the 120,000 mile limit puts most out of coverage. this is just another game to put off the safety of the consumer. i have a 17 year old downs child. she gets out of the van every day and has to push the door shut. she has to use two hands and it is not safe. if she slips her hand will be in the way of the door and it will not reopen. i have tried to talk to toyota and they just say we are out of their coverage time limits. i reported the door way back in early 2012. this would have been in the scope of their liability. at that time they said it would cost two to three thousand dollars to repair the faulty equipment. i ask the obvious? when does this stop? do a search on google for sliding door problems for sienna vans and you will be overwhelmed at the blogs and sights dedicated to this one issue. this is a massive problem and should have been addressed by toyota. the other issue is when the cable for the door breaks you can't get out of the van. when you can't get out of the van there is a major mechanical problem. toyota needs to replace the parts causing this issue at no cost to the consumer. the parts are the lock actuator, the sliding hinge and cables which fail and causes door to hang, the cable which when broken renders the door useless. please help!!! *tr

Seat warmer on drivers side burns my leg if left on for more than 2-4 minutes. understand there is a recall for this year and model but was told by toyota the recall does not apply to factory installed models(xle) , which mine is, only vehicles which had seat warmers installed by southeast toyota(set) as an option. *tr

While driving on 4 lane highway, i began to smell burning rubber, then noticed that the battery discharge indicator light came on. found that the serpentine belt driving the alternator and compressor had been shredded and was hanging to the ground. upon a closer look, the crankshaft pulley had failed (it had come apart). it appeared that the outer ring had separated from the rubber inner ring of the pulley and the outer ring had become misaligned. the misalignment appeared to have caused the serpentine belt failure. it also caused damage to the timing belt cover, the timing belt and the power steering belt. the battery light came on because of the failed serpentine belt. fortunately, i maintained power steering because the power steering belt had not completely failed when i pulled off the highway. the failure seems to be identical to that covered by safety recall nhtsa campaign number: 11v539000. however, toyota claims that my vin number is not subject to the recall. toyota's response to me does not make sense since this is the same model, same model year, same engine model, same parts manufacture (pulley contains the mark noted in the recall), same manufacture date (feb. 2005), etc of the vehicles covered by the recall. seems that the recall has not covered all of the vehicles affected by this failure. my vehicle was purchased new on september 15, 2005. *tr

There is a spare tire recall on 2004-2011 toyota siennas. the "interim" fix removes the spare tire from underneath the vehicle and stores it in the passenger area. toyota has known about this problem since 2010. i bought this car for the extra cargo space and the seven passenger capability. now at best its a six passenger vehicle with a pretty big tire unsecured in the passenger/cargo area. the reason for this recall is that the spare tire had been suspended under the car and now it has been determined that the cable is deteriorated and could allow the spare tire to drop onto the road. it seems to me that toyota is in no hurry to make a permanent repair. in the event of really hard stop or collision this loose tire and wheel assembly could cause injury. *tr

Approaching full stop realized that although braking car was not slowing. brake again and again then car felt as if coasting in free fall then shot forward like an air plane taking off. kept slamming on brake; suddenly car stopped moving forward - no huge jerk/lurch as one might expect from sudden stop just......stopped. continued to drive home. a few times i pressed accelerator and then brake to compare to "event" and am convinced i was braking the entire time of the "event". i am trained movement specialist and know my foot was on brake not accelerator. towed car to dealer today. toyota can't find anything wrong with car and suggested i had been stepping on accelerator. *tr

On monday, oct. 13, 2014, i was slowly backing out of my driveway when my 2005 toyota sienna van suddenly accelerated rapidly and uncontrollably. i tried to stop the van, but it sped backwards across the street in front of my house, ran over a curb, and crashed into a parked car. the car that my van struck pushed into another car which was also damaged. this was most frightening and upsetting, especially since i have learned that this type of malfunction has been reported many times to toyota. my van was totaled, the second car may have been totaled and the third car will need at least a new door. a woman who was in the third car is claiming to have been injured. *tr

This past winter, our right side power sliding door began to act up- it would not open or close via the key fob or button over the rearview mirror. if you pulled the door handle, it would open or close. after a few days, it began working fine again. then in april, it began acting up again, doing the same things as before, but this time, it also would sometimes not fully close (it would be closing on its own, but before it was fully closed, it would go back open again). we didn't want to spend money on it because we had just bought a house for the first time and were focused on that. but then when we were out in june, we had closed the door, or thought we had, and came out of the store we were in later to find the door wide open. that is a problem! our van could have been stolen or things out of it. thankfully, god watched over our vehicle. so we finally explored into getting it fixed and were told about this extended warranty/recall for the first time. the problem was by the time we inquired, we were just over 120,000 miles, but are still within the 9 years (but it is whichever occurs first), so now we are being told it cannot be fixed under the extended warranty/recall and will cost us $1,900 to get it fixed. we don't have this kind of money and are very upset! we were never notified by toyota of this extended recall, or we would have taken the van in right away when the door began to act up. we also were told (falsely) by the toyota dealer that it is 7 years or 120,000 miles and that either way, we don't qualify. i think toyota needs to take care of this problem because it is a safety issue to our vehicle and personal safety (especially with kids- we could think the door is closing, but then it doesn't). *tr

This is really an ongoing issue that started in winter of 2012 and carried over into 2013. our sienna has/had issues with the power sliding driver and passenger doors. we were told by lithia toyota in grand forks, nd that it would cost $1700 to replace a latch and cable in order for the power sliding door to work. there is no way i was even going to consider paying that for the driver or passenger side, let alone both. after reading about all the issues toyota sienna's have, my wife and i looked for other options. we took our sienna to corwin toyota in fargo, nd where they removed the power capability so we could simply have a manual sliding door on the driver side. that option worked well for a while, but eventually it didn't work between the snow/ice and (full disclosure...we live on a gravel road) dust, our doors continuously stick no matter what time of the year it is, regardless of temperature. we often go for months at a time with only one operational manual sliding door (we did have lake toyota in devils lake, nd make the passenger side door manual like the drivers side). when both doors get stuck, we have one repaired (have done that a couple times). this is a safety issue that toyota is refusing to do anything about. why can't we have a manual operating door? why do we have to keep going to a dealer to have this situation taken care of? i have tried to contact toyota customer care and was told that their warranty expired at 120k mile point (we currently have 194k miles on the van, bought it with 125k). i just want toyota to repair my sliding doors so they work manually. i do not care about power doors. perhaps you can explain this to toyota in a way which i have failed to do. *tr

On hwy 1 from pacifica to santa cruz, driving approx, 45-50mph around the bends and curves, the van's vsc light would come on along with warning beeping and the car would try to "correct" itself by steering straight when i needed it not to. this happened again approx. 1-2 months later while driving along hwy 50, at approx. 45-50mph up to south lake tahoe on the same dry, but winding/curvy roads, the car would try to "correct" itself by steering straight. again, on june 17th, along hwy 50 approx. 45-50mph just taking the exit off of the freeway, steering into the right hand turn lane, the car vsc light, beeping and steering "correction". this is very dangerous!!!! i am surprised that it has not caused an accident yet!. i need the car to turn for a reason!! please feel free to contact me for further information. i took it to the toyota dealership and they said that the van had no logs from the sensors (steering angle or yaw). we asked them to recalibrate it (set it back to zero), but that obviously hasn't worked. i have ordered a new steering angle sensor and i am having it installed and the system recalibrated, in hopes that will fix the issue. *tr

My 5 yr old daughter was sitting in the driver's seat and my almost 10 yr old son was sitting in the passenger seat. i was standing right next to the driver's seat inside the open door, the car was parked in my driveway. my son for some reason decided to shift the car out of park. the key was not in the ignition and nobody was pressing on the brake. the minivan started to roll a few feet back and i screamed and luckily he put it back into park and it stopped. this is a defect in the shift lock solenoid that was recalled. i received a recall notice a few months back and i took my minivan to a toyota dealership less than a month ago for this to be fixed, apparently something went very wrong. *tr

The accelerator stuck on this van as i was passing another vehicle on a rural, two lane road. as soon as i depressed the accelerator to pass, i knew something was wrong. the gas pedal stayed down even after i removed my foot and the van continued to accelerate even faster even though i was now hitting the brakes hard! with curves in the road approaching in about a mile, i had to do something fast! i was standing on the brakes with both feet now and the van continued to speed up. i was able to shift it into neutral, all the while continuing to stand on the brakes. the engine revved even faster but i was able to get the van turned off the road into a farm field access drive. the van still wasn't stopping but at least i was off the road and not going to hit another vehicle. as the van continued to move, i thought about bailing out but thankfully, i didn't. the van was still going fast enough it could've run over me and i had no idea where it would end up if i got out! by the grace of god, the van finally stopped after i started turning the wheel hard to the left. i shifted it into park and shut it off while i sat there shaking and trying to decide who to call first. this situation could have turned out extremely bad had the circumstances been different. thank god there was no one in front of me while this was going on, i wasn't in a congested area of houses or other vehicles or on a busy highway. i'm so glad one of our boys wasn't driving this when it happened! this was the scariest thing that's ever happened to me while driving over 30 years! the van was towed to the dealership where we purchased it and have had it serviced faithfully. i'm waiting to hear back from them when they will be able to look at it. *tr

Power sliding passenger door failed in the open position. auto-door turned off and finally with much effort closed the door manually. door will now not open without the major effort of a full grown adult. failure was sudden and unannounced. in case of an accident or emergency, there is no way any mid or rear seat children or small adults could open this door enough to egress the vehicle. several people with the same failure report having to drive with the door jammed open to get to repair shops. failure of this drive cable (and sometimes the associated motor) is well documented on-line, even in much younger vehicles. toyota even added it to the extended service plan. *js

After the rear hatch struts were replaced for the recall, the rear hatch when opened manually flies open so fast it has hit me the head. toyota said the new struts have more pressure to hold the door up so it will open faster, but this is dangerous. the door never opened this fast with the old struts. toyota needs to resolved this issue. *tr

The driver's side power sliding door will open about 4 inches then returns to close. there is nothing blocking the track. estimates that i have read have been anywhere from $1500 - $2500 to get this fixed. i have three small children, one of whom is disabled. if there was an emergency, i would not be able to get my children out of the vehicle quickly. i do not have the finances to get this fixed. after reading about this same complaint from hundreds of other owners, could there be an investigation or recall for this problem? is there any place i can get help for this problem? my children's safety is of utmost importance to me. *tr

Sliding doors freeze shut whenever temperature is below freezing. the toyota service departments solution is to spray the door weather stripping with silicone spray which does solve the problem but only for a short duration of time (1 month max) and does not solve the problem at colder temperatures (below 20 degrees f) where the doors always freeze shut. this issue is potentially dangerous by trapping the passengers inside with no means of egress, especially in the event of a front end collision where even the front doors are inoperable. this is a know issue with this year/model toyota van, with many others experiencing the same problem. i have experienced the problem when trying to attempt to enter the vehicle and exiting the vehicle after the temperature has dropped while driving. *tr

Driver side sliding door will not open at all, manually or automatically. originally, with less than 100,000 miles, this sliding door would partially close, but just before latching closed, would reverse direction and reopen. toyota dealer stated this was not part of toyota's extended warranty, but replaced the hinge for the cost of parts when the passenger side sliding door also began having problems opening with the interior buttons and remote (at about 110,000 miles). evidently, toyota's extended warranty does not cover very much because the dealership has told me every time that it was not a warranty item, and contacting their corporate resulted in no action. after having all the items fixed at the end of may, a month later the passenger sliding door once again would not open with the switches, and quite often hangs up partially open or closed when using the handles. this causes a problem/safety issue especially when the children are dropped off and picked up at school because they (or a teacher) have to return to the vehicle, or parent get out and go around, to close the door. the driver side door not opening at all now poses a serious risk should an emergency happen and the driver would have to climb over the seat or exit the van to go to the passenger side sliding door (that may hang up) to reach our young daughter. i believe toyota should have to issue a recall on their 2005 siennas' sliding doors because this results in many dangerous situations and this is an extensive problem (i know of multiple owner's with these problems and a simple google search gets countless hits).

Auto was purchased new from toyota dealer in march of 2005. received an extended warranty enhancement notice for front door check mounting panel from toyota in 2007. the warranty was for 5 years or 100,000 miles. in june of 2011, my driver door began making the popping sound described in the information i received from toyota. i took the car into a toyota deal and was told the extended warranty had expires and i would need to pay for any repair. this was a manufacturing defect identified by toyota yet the refuse to cover the repair,$2,000. august 2013 took the sienna into the dealer because of a clunking noise when window was being lowered. i paid for the "repair" but still have a malfunctioning window. i was informed, after discovering the window still wouldn't work, that the door weld would have to be fixed for the window to function properly. i am concerned because now i have a nonfunctioning window and a door that has a manufacturing defect that toyota refused to acknowledge as a long term safety issue. interestingly enough, if you were lucky enough to have the door weld fail prior to toyota issuing the "extension" they would have reimbursed the owner for repair. or, if you experienced the failure during the 5 year period, it would also have it fixed by toyota. this should be a mandatory recall based on it being a safety issue.

I first experience issue with the doors closing but not smoothly and the dealer at the time was where i purchased the vehicle and they said there was nothing wrong but i would occassionally have to tug on teh door latch 5-7 times very forcefully in order for the door to disengage and start to open. i switched to a toyota dealer within 5 miles of my home and had my car in for regular service several times i requested the side sliding doors checked because the driver side had more frequent occurance of not opening unless tugging very forcefully on the latch and then once it started to open it made a creaking sound that i explained as sounding like a strained metal wire. i asked if there were any issues with door mechanisms or motors etc as i had not received any type of recall notice, etc. i was told on 3 seperate occassions that the doors were in working order . on 7/16/13. i brought car to dealership to diagnoase service eng light that came on and indicated sliding doors were making odd noises and seemed to have difficulty closing completely. the dealer called the next day and indicated a cost $5k for repairs. i inquired about the sliding doors and was told by the phone rep that there was no documentation of a door problem and i explained that i have been experiencing issues with the sliding doors on both sides and it was supposed to be checked. i was asked to hold and then was told the doors were checked and had no issue. that was a lie. i left for vacation on 7/19 and returned on 8/7 without my sienna. the day i got back the passenger sliding door opened but but would not close i hit the button to close i heard the motor for the door but it didn't move. i found a peice of black plastic on the ground and a metal cable hanging from the side of the car. i was not informed of recal/extended coverage for the sliding doors i would have demanded replacement!

Several months ago, the panel spot welds on the front door (driver's side) door check mounting panel became detached causing a "popping" noise when opening and closing the door. today, i heard a "clunk" noise when i opened the door and the "popping" noise stopped. however, now i am not able to open the window more than 1/2 way nor open the door properly which has me rather concerned for my safety. if the window is open at all, i cannot open the door wide enough to get out even though i am not overweight nor am i a large man. if i close the window first, i can open the door 3/4 of the way before it stops. toyota is fully aware of this door check problem. i received a notice from them a number of years ago indicating that, because this problem is quite common, they are offering an "enhanced warranty" for 5 years from when the vehicle was first put into service or 100,000 miles, which ever comes first, to fix the door. i bought the vehicle new in 2005 so the enhanced warranty expired in 2010. when i first heard the popping noise, i brought the vehicle back to the dealer who informed me that i would have to pay for the repair since the enhanced warranty period had expired. the cost, $2300 dollars. when i asked, "why so much?" their body shop gave me a long list of parts and work that needed to be done to "repair" the problem it included removing the headlights, bumper, quarter panel and rear door among other things. the reason they could not just replace the door was that toyota redesigned the entire door and had to retrofit the newly engineered door to my vehicle. so unless i pay $2300 to repair what is, essentially, an engineering design flaw on toyota's part, i am left with an unsafe situation if i need to quickly get out of the vehicle and cannot close the window first as would happen in case of an electrical system failure for example. *tr

Air bag light began flashing. dealer scanned airbag system code and found b0111 open side squib circuit. there was an open connector on the passenger side wire harness for air bag. dealer replaced connector and wire kit, installed new connector and soldered wire to existing harness and installed new corrugated tubing. this resulted in a $523 charge. *tr

The door check on the driver side failed. toyota (local dealer and headquarters) denied it was the door check (a known manufacturing defect) and gave me an estimate of over $1500 to repair the defect. i took the vehicle to a reputable body shop to look at the door and they confirmed the damage was caused by a faulty door check. the body shop did repair the defect, which as i understand it, if not repaired can allow the door to swing freely. toyota did not correct or acknowledge the faulty door check on this 2005 awd sienna. *tr

During the timing belt and water pump replacement, toyota technician found radiator had a small leak and suggested to call toyota company . toyota representative from company informed the radiators had problems for 2005 sienna but they will not be able to fix it because mileage is more than 75000 or vehicle is more than 7 years old. *tr

Passenger side power sliding door hinge broke at the joint attached to the door which made the door sag and rub up against the rear quarter panel which resulted in scratched paint and metal. door was not able to be opened by remote. had to be 'helped along' to get it started opening. i thought it was electrical until i took it to the dealership. toyota part number is 68380€“08031. as a result of the broken hinge, the door lock actuator has burned out and will not open the door with the use of the remote. toyota only has a recall for the cable in the sliding door mechanism, but the dealership will not replace the cable until it is actually broken. this same type cable holds up the spare tire and they did replace it. i guess a tire falling into the road is more important than my child falling out of the van if the door falls off! *tr

I was driving in traffic and briefly looked to side of road. then looked back and noticed traffic stopped ahead of me. fully applied brakes (hard) but no braking, squealing or abs. full airbags but fortunately no injuries. looking at the scene i should have had plenty of distance to stop. car totaled. *tr

Shifter of automatic transmission suddenly became loose while driving. it started to wiggle unpredictably left and right between gears, e.g. 4 and d. it would not stay firmly put in p(ark), and when in p, removal of the key from the ignition became difficult or impossible. *tr

My wife started the car and claimed how hard it was to turn the steering wheel. we drove to a location using the expressway and the problem continued. it made turning under motion very difficult. i took the wheel on our return and confirmed how awkward it was. so we drove to our garage. they called us later and said the input shaft malfunctioned. cost of part from toyota $374.19 plus tax and labor. only one left in stock. is it possible that toyota has a problem that needs to be recognized and recalled before there are serious accidents?

I was driving home from work, after merge from rte 20 into rte 9, i drove up hill, about 50 yards to my street, i saw smoke behind my van, i did not see any warning light from my driving panel, my van was still running smoothly, so i decided to drive to my house (about 150 yards) away, after i parked my van, i saw smoke coming out from hood, and a long leaking oil track along the street. i checked my engine oil, it was ok. next morning, i started my van, it is still no warning light on my driving panel, i called aaa to get my van towed to toyota westborough ma. technician told me that my engine cylinder head got blown a hole and oil flying out to be burned and produced smoke, potentially it will catch fire if i continue to drive. i had my van oil changed on 08/2012 by sears shop, about 5,000 miles was driven since last oil changed. i believe the engine aluminum head was defective product, not because of other reason. it is very dangerous it happened while the van was running at highway. it could catch fire too. *tr

Three of the four doors of our toyota sienna have broken. when the cable that operates the rear sliding passenger door snapped, it became entangled in the door mechanism. when we tried to shut the door manually, the glass from the door shattered on the children sitting in the rear seat. previously, the driver's door hinges snapped. we discovered this problem when three of four hinges had snapped. the door was at risk of falling off entirely. we have brought this to toyota's attention (now a small claims matter). toyota has refused to acknowledge or remedy the situation and has not issued a safety recall (it has offered repairs in some cases (ours was not covered because of mileage)as a limited extended warranty). *tr

Vehicle had been parked. when we backed out i turned the wheel to the left. there was a "clunk" and it felt like i just went over some object with the right front tire. we could find nothing in the parking lot that would contribute to this. i drove the car that day without further incident. the next day we went on a 430 mile trip. several times that we parked we heard the same "clunk" and felt a slight drop in the right front. i went to the toyota dealer as soon as i could get an appointment on 2/26/13. toyota found that the internal power steering rack was failing and had to be replaced for safety. the part number was: 0 44250-08041. i asked toyota if there were any safety recalls. there were none. toyota said these failures did occur on trucks in heavy duty use but not in sienna mini-vans. *tr

Online search revealed ongoing problem by other owners of front seat belt jamming. this is about the 3rd or 4th time it has happened to me.

Drivers door started to creak as if the hinges were dry. tried to lube the hinge but did not solve the problem. the door the started to click and have a banging sound as if something was loose or broken. *tr upon investigation found the lower weld that attaches the door open holding arm to having been broken.

Dash has cracks all over. i am a little worried that the passenger side air bag would have an issue deploying properly in the event of a crash. *tr

Toyota has issued a csp to fix the power sliding doors in our model. ours broke over a year ago and the cables were the only problem at the time. toyota took almost a year to get the parts to start fixing the doors. now they are telling us that many other parts are broken and not covered, this seems like a bait and switch tactic to me as i have read hundreds of blogs and posts stating the exact same thing happened to them, with a $1500+ price tag. i feel that the parts broke due to toyota taking so long to get the notice out to customers after the issue was already happening. i think it is a scam and would like it to be investigated, i think they should be responsible for the entire repair cost since when we went in, only the cable was broken. *tr

Steering very hard and "bumpy" during low speed maneuvering when first driven for the day. internet search revealed many others have very similar problem that improved after spraying "steering knuckle" with penetrating type oil. appears steering link is becoming corroded and sticky. vehicle is always garaged when not being driven. called toyota dealer, they are aware of problem but say toyota hq has not authorized them to do any work without full pay. appears lots of people are having belts, power steering pumps, etc replaced at great expense at independent and dealer repair shops without solving the problem or the problem even being correctly diagnosed. lucky i have internet and refer to it in these situations. guess i can now have mine repaired for $1-2000 or do the temporary oil fix. lots of money when its a manufacturing design defect and they won't help. *tr

The automatic rear sliding door on the driver side broke. i can see that toyota acknowledged the problem and extended a warrant to 9 years or 120,000 miles (whichever comes first). well, my vehicle has over 120,000 miles and i am now unable to use the door at all. after doing research i have found that many people are experiencing the same problem. i think this should be a recall and not a warranty extension. i have no way of currently opening the door. this is a major safety concern considering i have three small children. if something were to happen, an accident or any other circumstance to get to my children quickly, i would not be able to. the automatic doors was the selling point for our purchase of this van. toyota says to come in and have the automatic door deactivated so that we can use it manually. to have it fixed costs between $1,000 and $3,000. *tr

When pulling front seat belts to hook them, they will frequently fold over and become stuck in the bezel if you don't remember to be very careful and cannot easily be moved further or retracted without considerable effort. it must be "worked" back into its storage area. one needs to get out of the vehicle and work it back into the bezel with a slotted screwdriver or some other tool. i have just driven without the seat belt when its raining hard or very cold. toyota hq says they will not help with the problem and we are on our own. haven't priced what it will cost to have the whole mechanism replaced. design or quality of bezel material is the problem but toyota says sorry, take care of it yourself if its a problem for you. *tr

The struts of the door(liftgate) is not holding the door properly when it is opened. so there is a possibility the person who opens the door will hit their head. the failure started @ 70k. *tr

I was driving the car and noticed it was a bit sluggish. the next thing i know, the brake pedal is on the floor even though i am not pressing it, and the car is still moving. i had my three children in the car, so i drove carefully to a safe stopping place, used the emergency brake, and exited the car. i then noticed that all four brakes or tires were smoking and there was a very strong burning smell. if there had been a need for me to stop suddenly while i was still moving, my brakes would not have worked! after getting the car towed and replacing both the abs actuator and the master cylinder, my mechanic diagnosed the source of the problem: the brake light switch and bracket had been knocked out of alignment and were causing brake application even when the pedal was not depressed by the driver. this caused abs and vehicle stability control failures when the brakes overheated. i searched toyota's recalls and found a recall for this exact problem was issued for 2011 siennas only, but i had experienced precisely the same problem in a 2005 sienna. i called toyota and got nowhere; because no recall had been issued for my model year, they would not help me at all with covering the tremendous cost i had incurred. *tr

The front seatbelts--especially the drivers' seatbelts often become stuck when extended. sometimes the seatbelt cannot retract because it is twisted; more often the seatbelt will not retract. the result is that the it the occupant isn't (adequately) restrained. a temporary fix can often be accomplished by adjusting the shoulder height but this is time consuming and frustrating. *tr

The vehicle hinge of the driver's door becomes unwelded from the door causing a clicking noise. after several openings and closings of the door the hinge loosens even more causing a interference with the window. the driver's side window is only allowed to fall 2/3rd of the way down before the hinge stops it causing potential breakage of the glass while the motor vehicle is in operation. *tr

Under toyota's customer support program, a technical service bulletin was put out saying that 2005 toyota siennas had faulty radiators that cracked in cold weather and could lead to coolant leakage and subsequent engine seizure (safety report #0506). when the weather started getting cold this winter, my radiator cracked and i needed to be repaired as the engine was running extremely hot. when i found this bulletin and brought it to toyota's attention they refused to honor it saying that my vin number was not in the range. when i asked why this was the case, they claimed (they being toyota's national headquarters) that they had realized the fault and therefore switched the radiators out during production. upon closer examination, the bulletin was announced by toyota on january 30, 2006. if what they claim is true, then they were knowingly selling cars with faulty radiators for about a year and a half before they issued the recall. if they were lying, then the recall needs to be extended to include all toyota siennas of that year. *tr

When pulling the driver side seat belt in order to buckle, the belt folded slightly at the point of exit from the body panel, causing it to become stuck and unable to retract. after attempting to fix for half an hour, we were unable to return belt to proper position and had to drive home without a functioning driver seat belt. this has happened several times now, but this is the first time we were unable to get it fixed in a reasonable time. seems to be a design issue. *tr

2005 sienna was driven to a parking garage and parked for two hours. upon returning to the sienna and starting the engine, three lights came on; check engine, vsc, and trac off. drove vehicle home (150 miles), the 3 lights remained on as well as loss of cruise control and an intermittent compass display. took vehicle in for inspection at a local toyota dealer and was told the skid control unit ecu needed to be replaced. i found out there are other complaints and a technical service bulletin on the 2005 sienna vehicle stability control (also called electronic stability control) system that has caused injuries. even more remarkable, my 2005 sienna has only 62k miles and in that time there has been 2 other incidences with the same symptoms. why has there not been a recall if there are already injuries in the database?? *tr

Toyota recently recalled the power sliding door cables for certain toyota sienna years. the broken cable inhibits the door from working correctly. ours, a 2005 sienna, was taken in and it turned out to be the power sliding door actuator. five days ago, the other sliding door actuator failed. both doors cannot be opening correctly and poses a serious danger to the safety of our 2 young children. toyota fails to recognize all of the complaints about failing actuators that are posted online. they are charging $1,100 to fix each door. there should be a safety recall because of the actuator failures. thank you. *tr

Our car started having problems in 2008 with the passenger side rear sliding door. it became gradually more difficult to operate and eventually would not open at all. when i took the car to the dealer in 2009 (it had 99,000 miles), the toyota dealer said that it was a ˜known problem with siennas and recommended cutting the door cable. he said it would cost over $1000 to fix. i paid to have the problem diagnosed. the sliding door failure is a safety issue for us, and anyone with children. the door is now operated manually, which it was not designed to do. it requires an unreasonable amount of force to open/close. the safety mechanisms, which were designed into the door to prevent injury, “ these sensors do not operate now. my pre-teen children have to get out of the car on the street side, since the door is too difficult to operate. i feel that this door failed because of a design defect which toyota has known about for several years. toyota has apparently intentionally delayed the release of the ˜warranty enhancement in order to purposefully exclude as many owners as possible from this program in order to avoid paying for repairs. my car, which had dealer-documented rear door failure in 2009 at 99k miles, is now excluded from the repair program. *tr

While i was driving, my steering started locking on me. i was going thru mountain driving and as i try to get control on situation it started to become much harder to control. to avoid any unpleasant incident i decided to move over in right lane and slow down significantly to keep control on the car. once the mountain driving was over i tried to find reliable shop to get this issue fixed as this was getting worst. we were fortunate to come out without injury but next family facing this issue might not be. i did research regarding this issue on internet and it appears that many more consumer has experience similar problem with same model. i would like to request a proper investigation for consumer safety. thank you *tr

We have had complete sliding door failure from the latch release motor for both the passenger and driver side doors. the malfunction is electrical and was in no way caused by mis-treatment or an accident. the passenger side door failed first and several weeks later the driver side sliding door failed in the same manner. this failure has resulted in passengers not being able to open the sliding doors from the inside of the car. the doors will only open from the outside. *tr

At approximately 81,000 miles, the srs light started blinking on my toyota sienna. code was b0116 (open side squib circuit). this is a safety issue and there is no recommended maintenance listed for this system. i took the car to the dealership, who indicated that this repair was out of warranty (5 years/60,000 miles) and that i needed to pay approximately $3,000 for the repair, plus rental car. toyota was unwilling to stand by this safety issue, after requests by dealership and personally by me for assistance. i expected the safety equipment to last the life of the car when i purchased it, and not to have to budget for such a large repair, unless maintenance was indicated. all other maintenance has been performed to or exceeding toyota standards and on time. further, i was told that repairs like this are often/usually covered by toyota if the owner has been continuously getting service/maintenance at the dealership, and that assistance is usually denied if service/maintenance is performed elsewhere. my service/maintenance is performed elsewhere, but with extremely high standards, parts, and liquids that are all at or above toyota specifications. *tr

Toyota recently issued an extended warranty notice for the sienna van rear powered sliding door. however, they conveniently excluded key components, from this warranty, that allows the door to operate fully and correctly, such as the actuator. the power sliding door on my sienna does not work due to a faulty actuator but toyota will not cover it because it is not on their secretive list of covered components. even though they admit oem component failure of the powered sliding door through their extent warranty notice. so now i am simply looking for toyota to cover a component that they should be held responsible for. the dealer wants ~$900 dollars for the fix! *tr

Our right side-power door stopped working and we then received a warranty enhancement notice "certain 2004 to 2007 model year sienna rear sliding door latch assemblies and power sliding door cable assemblies" extending the warranty to 120,000 miles. we took it to the toyota dealer and they stated that the door latch assembly in our vehicle is not covered because the part numbers are different. it seems if they are having an issue with these components they all should be covered. the part number needed is 69631-08021 which includes the parts in the recall. it seems if there is a problem that required a warranty extension, and those parts are some how defective then the entire unit should also be covered. *tr

During inspection and repair of other vehicle recalls, it was determined that power steering assembly was severely leaking fluids, that radiator was leaking in 3 places, and air conditioning coils hoses\brackets were corroded and cracked due to manufacturer using two dissimilar metals (such as steel bolts in aluminum assembly) and thereby requiring immediate replacement for safety. toyota dealership upon inspection declared steering assembly a "critical" repair and issued written documentation. i took vehicle to another shop and they confirmed toyota's dealers conclusion and also found radiator and conditioning coils problems missed by dealer. all problems have been fixed at owners expense - a recall should be made by manufacturer. *tr

The passenger sliding door on the vehicle does not work. the toyota dealership said it's a motor defect not covered under toyota's warranty enhancment for the door. this has become a safety issue because my son is not strong enough to open the door manually and in order for him to exit the vehicle, he either needs to exit on the driver's side into oncoming traffic, or climb to the front seat to use the front door. on more than one occasion, we were almost hit by a car while dropping him off at school. there is no parking lot there and neither parents nor children are supposed to exit the vehicle at all on the drivers side. my son couldn't get the door open so i had to get out of the car and was almost hit by another car not expecting me to be opening the door. it is more than a matter of convenience, it is essential that the door can be opened and closed using the power feature. the manual sliding door is way to heavy for a 5 yr old to use safely. *tr

Drivers side door started to make cracking popping noises when the door is opened and closed. the weld inside the door is faulty. this problem occurred after the additional warranty period but within the mileage limit. hinge needs to be welded or the entire door replaced. both options at owners expense. this is a faulty design that should not have a limited warranty. *tr

The vehicle was taken to a toyota dealer to correct a possible steering defect, as prescribed by a letter received from toyota motors in march 2012. while in the custody of the dealership the struts for the rear lift gate were replaced in response to a 2008 recall issued by toyota, but never communicated to the owner. the struts that were installed were not the correct ones, and when the correct parts were received the vehicle was returned to the dealer for replacement. the rear lift gate has not functioned correctly since the installation, even though it did prior to that time. after several additional attempts to correct the problem, the dealer said the malfunction was coincidental. i then contacted toyota, and the dealer's customer relations representative. the customer representative had the assistant service manager contact me and had their master mechanic review the situation. he determined that the new struts that were installed were "stiffer" than the original struts, and that the motor on the lift gate did not have sufficient power to operate the lift gate. the dealer is supposed to contact toyota for a resolution, that he states could result in my being responsible for replacing all or part of the motor. i am not sure why i should be liable for any of the cost to replace the defective struts, to return them to normal operation

Driver side door retainer broke and door is not serviceable. this is a safety defect that toyota knows about and issued a notice on but did not inform us of defect and will not fix it. this is outrageous. *tr

Driver door mounting panel weld broke and now is causing a popping noise when opening and closing the driver side door. toyota sent out an enhancement warranty notice on june 18, 2012 knowing full well that the vehicle prescribed warranty had expired and refused to fix the problem. what is the point of notifying owners about the defect when they refuse to fix the problem. toyota need to be compelled to issue a recall rather than just notification since other owners are also experiencing the same problem. *jb

The automatic sliding door no longer engages when the button is pushed (neither the car button or the fob button work). the door occasionally opens when manually opened, but is often stuck closed. being unable to exit a vehicle using the passenger sliding door is extremely dangerous. *tr

The liftgate struts were replaced under the recall in october 2008. rear liftgate struts do not work now. the liftgate will not stay open. we have to hold it open while another person retrieves items from the rear cargo area. the struts began failing intermittently in the winter of 2010. i complained to my dealership, but the liftgate worked for them, so they would grease them. in the winter of 2011, liftgate struts quit working. the struts don't work in hot and cold climates. i've shown this to my dealership again this year and they referred me to toyota customer care. customer care issued a case number and said they can't help me, but my dealership would contact me. i never was contacted and had to contact them myself. they refused to replace for free, but quoted me an outrageous amount. i haven't replaced the struts yet. i have 3 young children which could be seriously injured by the liftgate falling. it has already bumped my husband and i in the head. *jb

The car's power sliding door sometimes cannot be closed. after pressing on the remote control to close the door, it moves the door to the close position. however, the door opens itself right after it gets to the close position. i brought the car to a dealership in california (elmore toyota) back in 2007 shortly after the warranty went out, but they said that it would cost me several hundred dollars to fix the problem. in may 2012, i received a letter from toyota indicating that they will extend the warranty to cover the cable and the latch that causes the issue. therefore, i brought the car to elmore toyota only to learn that the reason the door would close is caused by the rear slider hinge that was sagging due to the door weight and causing the problem. so the warranty would not cover the fix. in my opinion, the warranty extension should cover all assembly components causing the very problem with the door, not just the cable or the latch. the purpose of the extension should be to fix the door closing problem for customers no matter what component of the assembly is causing it. *tr

Noticed first crack about a month ago and within a couple of days noticed a second crack. one is on the right side starting from the far front edge where the speaker grill is, running diagonally toward the left rear corner of the van. it originally was about 3" long but now has grown to about 5". the other is on the left side starting at the side window defroster vent, running straight back. it originally was about 2" long and is now about 3" long. it is surprising to me how quickly they started and how fast they are growing. this is clearly a safety issue, i have serious concerns that the force of the airbag depolyment would cause pieces of the dash to become projectiles at the passenger. *tt

Abs, vsc, trac off, and tire pressure indicator came on while driving. i checked the tire pressure, gas cap everything was fine. driving conditions were normal. the lights did not turn on when starting the next morning (not normal). the following day the lights came on during starting (normal) and then went off. *js

I estimated mileage and dates because it seems that after our first winter with the vehicle we began to have issues with the doors in cold weather. i live in nashville, tn so it's not like we have ferocious winters. at that point, my kids were 3 and 1 and obviously still needed to be in carseats. there were times i had to climb through the front seats with each of them because i could not get the doors open for anything. i know this is a widespread problem as i have been researching it for years. many home remedies i would see had raised concerns with others because of the potential to corrode the gasket. so, what i have found to work, is not good for everyone, but it does work. with my gloves on and my hand stretched flat, i bang the crap out of the top of the door at a 45 degree angle. at times, it has left me bruised at the heel of my hand, but i am able to get the door open and allow my children who are now 8 and 5, to enter and exit the vehicle properly. i would think the school would frown on them climbing out the front door in the car rider line in the mornings. :) *tr

I lilve in colorado and the doors will not open when weather drops below freezing. my kids could not open door from inside either. i recently broke the handle while trying to jerk the door open. it only happens in winter, but have never had this issue with any other vehicle.

Automatic sliding door will not work properly. it will not shut unless done manually. occurred soon after passing 50k miles. dealership "could not diagnose problem" and wanted ~$1200 to replace motor in door. appears this is a common problem that toyota will not address.

Our 2005 toyota sienna has had multiple problems with the power sliding doors. originally, the driver's side door stopped closing automatically. when button was pushed to close the door by all methods, on remote control, on driver's head panel or on panel next to sliding door, the door would begin to close then slide back open without warning or without us doing anything to open it back up. our local dealer fixed this original problem as it was under warranty, but now the passenger side power sliding door has the same problem but we are out of warranty and the cost is too exuberant for us to have it fixed. this appears to be a problem for many toyota sienna owners and can possibly be a danger. *js

Sliding doors do not want to open when it is cold out. power sliding door on the passengers side will not open even when it is warm out with the push buttons but you can hear the motor trying to open. this is a dangerous situation with 3 small children if there is ever an emergency. one child is handicapped and couldn't climb up to the front to be taken out if necessary. it has happened now that the door will not open or close if i do manage to get it open at all. huge disappointment in toyota. *tr

Passenger side power sliding door froze shut. after finally getting it open, it no longer works properly. the door will slide open automatically if you give it a boost by using the handle from either the inside or outside but will no longer automatically open with the touch of buttons. i brought it into my toyota dealer to be serviced and they tried to reinitialize it but the problem they say is a bad power door sensor. total cost for parts and labor would be $500! from checking on the internet, this seems to be a common problem with toyota sienna's with the power sliding doors. very frustrated there is not a recall! *tr

I have had trouble with my passenger side power sliding door for the last 12-18months. first the door was stuck and wouldn't open. a trip to toyota resulted in having the mechanisms replaced. fortunately i was under warranty at the time. now the door opens and partially shuts but will not latch for a complete close. a trip to toyota says that the latching mechanism has gone bad and will cost $875 to fix. the other issue is that the doors freeze shut in the winter. anytime we have snow or rain and then the temperature drops, the doors are frozen shut. i have complained about this to toyota on multiple occasions and i was told they could lubricate the doors. yeah, well, that doesn't work either. they have been warned that if my kids are in the car and i cannot get them out in case of an emergency because the doors are frozen, that i will sue toyota. *tr

The driver side seat belt jams when pulled down and can not fasten the seat belt. the jam is difficult to correct, and as time goes by it happens more. it is now happening as much as twice a week. when the belt jams, we must drive home without the seat belt. this is illegal in florida, dangerous, and makes us liable for a ticket and fine. there should be a recall to repair the problem. *tr

Both power sliding doors on my van have stopped working. the first door stopped working and within two weeks the other door has stopped. the doors stopped working with the key fob and the buttons in the front drivers area & the buttons located near the power doors, only opening with the actual door handle. they have now stopped working all together. we have turned the power button off so they open manually now. they are very hard to open manually(almost impossible for me at times?!) i have 3 small children and the other day i could not get the door to open at all (power or manually) and they had to crawl over the front seat(ridiculous)!!. it is very frustrating and unsafe to have doors that won't open. it appears that this problem has been going on with lots of toyotas since 2008 and toyota has not taken care of their customers. toyota has already done a recall on the rear lift door so why not take care of the doors that people actually use to get in and out of the vehicle. it is hard to believe that toyota has let this problem go on as long as it has. they can do a recall for a clip that holds carpet in place but not take care of this sort of issue. my biggest concern is for the safety of my children, that is why i purchased a toyota van in the first place but now i'm starting to regret that decision. after speaking with a toyota dealer and found out that it would cost approx. $1500 per door to fix i was very devastated. that is absolutely absurd!! i would expect to pay that much for an engine problem or transmission but for the doors??? and with all the problems reported by other sienna owners!? toyota step up and take care of your customers!!! how would they feel if they couldn't get out of their door???? *tr

The driver's side automatic sliding door on our 2005 toyota sienna xle no longer works automatically. it still works if we manually hold the exterior door knob or the interior door knob out for a few moments. i guess that means that the cable has not broken (yet). none of the buttons work to open the door anymore. the dealer says it is an $1100 door motor assembly replacement job. when the cable does break, other people report that the door remains stuck wherever it is - open or closed. is that not a safety issue? i ask the nhtsa to require toyota to recall these faulty devices and implement a permanent fix. *kb

The air bag indicator light flashed. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and was assessed to have an open circuit in the air bag assembly. the entire air bag harness assembly was replaced at a cost of $2600. many people are not able to afford this expense and will drive their vehicle without the air bags working properly. *tr

We have a sienna xle limited 2wd van with automatic sliding passenger doors. upon trying to open the driver's side passenger door, the wire snapped and made it virtually impossible to either open or close the door all the way. we turned the door's automatic feature off in order to try and close it manually with only limited success. this is the second such incident as this has happened before, but on the passenger side. very unsafe, especially for those passengers in the back who now have no way of escape except through breaking of windows. *tr

Srs warning light flashing, taken to the dealer to be informed of the b0111 code and told that both front side airbag harnesses are recommended to be replaced by a toyota service memo, though the b0111 is specifically indicative of a faulty right front harness fault. could the number of complaints be low due to the fact that this fault comes up earlier on most vehicles and they are covered by their warranty and thus not a concern? *kb

Toyota sienna 2005 developed two major problems about 6 years and 40,000 miles on it (right after warranty runs out). 1. passenger side front airbag malfunction resulting in airbag lights being on. dealer is quoting $700 dollars. more importantly, the fact that this important life saving device malfunctioning at just 6 years and right after warranty runs out. several other people have had exact same issue as evidenced by discussions in consumer forums on the internet. 2. driver side door makes loud popping noise while opening and closing. dealer confirmed that the welds in the driver hinges have broken. cost to repair (replace door !!) is $2400. toyota customer experience center claimed that a notification about this issue was mailed out, which i have never received. they extended the warranty to cover 5 years and guess what? it breaks at 6 years. both issues are important safety concerns and speaks volumes about toyota quality and cutting corners by designing products that work only until warranty is valid. toyota customer experience representative refused to escalate the matter to higher ups in toyota saying that she has the authority to decide what should be done. they also refused to shoulder the cost to repair. the representative was also unaware of the reasons why the airbag would malfunction. nhtsa should investigate these issues and force toyota to recall. *kb

While driving west in i-88 in new york, between exits 1 and 2, our rear end completely locked up. we were able to get the car onto the shoulder, but in doing so, we hit the concrete wall causing some body damage. *tr

I have a 2005 toyota sienna xle awd limited. the power sliding doors have motors in them that open and close the doors, via small steel cables. the steel cables attached to the motors/doors are the same steel cable type used in the toyota spare tire recall. these steel cables are trash. if/when they break, toyota is charging $1,600 to $1,800 per door to fix the problem, even if the motor attached to the steel cables is fine. i've been told that on newer model sienna vans you can just purchase the steel cables and not the whole motor. a google /yahoo search turns up hundreds if not thousands of complaints regarding these automatic sliding door issues and the extreme cost to repair them. additionally, i have been told by my toyota dealership that if the steel cable breaks, i can not open or close the door manually. this is a safety hazard! i have 2 children, if the door(s) won't open manually, how do i get my kids out if i have an accident? toyota needs to be held accountable for this problem. a recall needs to be conducted and toyota needs to foot the bill for these fixes. i called toyota usa and reported the issue. toyota basically could give a rat's butt about it. it's not a safety issue on a large enough scale. i am at a loss for words at just how angry i am at toyota. $3,200 to fix about 12 foot of cable that is no bigger in diameter than an cell phone charger's wire. we need help and representation! *tr

After toyota dealership replaced liftgate struts due to recall number 08v244000, the new struts cause the liftgate to open rapidly when opened manually, that is not using the power mode. liftgate opens so rapidly that injury is possible if you are not prepared to or are unable to move out of the way. *tr

Toyota safety recall for liftgate support replacement completed. since then, liftgate does not work consistently. works better during cooler weather. tailgate will start to close, go halfway, then reopen fully. after 2 or 3 attempts tailgate flies open quickly and could injure someone if they were in the arc of the tailgate swing. taken to the dealer 3 times to repair this- last time, dealer reprogrammed the tailgate motor, and told me if this continued the liftgate motor would need to be replaced for about $1000. had no (0) problems with the liftgate prior to the safety recall, and dealer is trying to tell me the liftgate motor is going bad (and has nothing to do with replacing the liftgate struts.) i think toyota needs to replace the liftgate motors, as they are unable to overcome the liftgate strut pressures. *tt

Toyota sienna le van was placed in park, turned off and keys removed. the gear shift was able to be moved out of the park position into drive by a 7 year old child. the van rolled approximately 400-500 feet and hit another vehicle and a tree. after a quick google search, i discovered a video posted by another toyota sienna owner which demonstrated if you gently wiggle the gear shift, it will easily move into any gear, with no keys or pedals pressed. i can recreate the issue every time. serious safety issue and i want to prevent the injury or worse to another child. i have an open case with toyota, however awaiting their inspection/ response.

The rear passenger sliding door will not open either manually or automatically. i took it to the dealership and was told that the automatic latch mechanism was broken and when that failed and you try to open the door manually with the handle it breaks the door latch as well so now door won't open either manually or automatically. this seems like a quite a design/engineering flaw. if the automatic opening mechanism fails and the only other way to open the door then causes the manual latch to break leaves you without the use of the door at all.

Air bag on left front failed in april 2009. replaced airbag at owner's cost of $700. then about 6 months later the airbag warning light on dash started blinking and would not turn off. took to toyota dealer on 2/23/11 and dealer stated that code in computer shows short in floor harness. at 100,401 miles toyota will not stand behind failure and my cost would be $1900 to repair. airbag system will not deploy in an accident is my understanding...can't believe toyota will recall a problem for floorboards affecting the accelerator and will not recall a problem affecting the entire airbag system. *tr

Power slide door pulley cable assembly failed on the driver side of a 2005 toyota sienna xle with 84,000 miles. the cable snapped and renders the door useless. pauly toyota dealer (crystal lake, il) did not even come within 20 feet of the van and quoted me $1600 to repair. the cable of the passenger side of the car has shows that the protective cable coating is crumbling and the cable is rusting making it a matter of time before passenger side door cable snaps as well. this is a very poor design that the cable is constantly exposed to the elements and prone to rusting and snapping (there are a lot of posts on the internet of 2004 sienna owners with the same problem). the failed part is the cable, but you are required to purchase the entire motor assembly to repair - it is a poor design to begin with, especially for owners that live in cold weather climates where the vehicle is exposed to freezing/thawing, road salt, etc. *tr

The airbag system light, on our 2005 toyota sienna, flashes on and off consistently. i took our car to the local toyota dealer and spent approximately $100 to research the problem. i was told that there is an issue with the airbag system and the repair would be $ 1500. most importantly, i was told that if the airbag symbol is on, the entire airbag system shuts down and does not work! how can a system so vital to safety not be covered in full by toyota? this vehicle has never been in any sort of accident. obviously there is a design flaw. i feel my safety and that of my family is completely compromised. in an attempt to resolve this problem, i contacted the toyota complaint hotline (1-800-331-4331) and opened a case. the issue remains unresolved. after escalating, toyota offered to pay half, but i still feel that this is much too expensive for something that involves passenger safety and should not fail after only five years. toyota is spending a great deal on advertising to stress the importance their company places on safety. i would expect, if their ads were accurate, that safety related issues would be addressed quickly before any potential harm. a quick google search will show many others with the same complaint about the passenger air bag malfunctioning. this should really be added to toyota's listing of recalls. *tr

Several months ago, we noticed the driver's side sliding door on our 2005 toyota sienna le (we have manual doors, not power sliding doors) would not "click" or "catch" and lock when we opened the door. no matter what we tried, the door would not latch and stay open about 25% of the time. a few days ago, the same door started to not close all the way intermittently. while driving, the interior lights and the door open indicator lights will come on and go off at varying frequency. when the interior lights are on, they cause a distraction and make driving more difficult at night. the lights will go on and, sometimes, slowing down or taking a left turn will cause them to go off, but only for a short time. anywhere from 5 seconds to a few minutes later, the light will be back on. they are on more then they are off. i'm sure our lights going on and off is also distracting to other drivers. i'm fearful the door will one day fly open while we are driving, putting my children in danger. i have not taken the vehicle to my dealer but i will this week. i've read countless accounts on the internet of problems with the doors on the sienna and i hope when enough complaints come in, a recall will be initiated. *tr
