2005 MERCURY Grand Marquis

Surprised no prior complaints lodged with CAS. Reported to be a common problem that is life threatening and discussed on a number of websites: the headlights on several years (2002-2005 and more) of both Crown Victoria and Gran Marquis FAIL WITHOUT WARNING…you can imagine what a significant safety issue this is. “The original Light Control Module installed on these cars had a major problem. The LCM fails over time due to a a bad circuit…” Ford just recently completely redesigned the LCM. YET FORD HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL for the many thousands of Crown Vics, including many police interceptors, and Gran Marquis on the road. This just came to light for us when my wife was driving at night last week and her headlights failed without warning as she was coming into a turn, nearly causing an accident. Ford will replace the original LCMs with the new fail-safe one but only on a case-by-case basis IF a vehicle owner happens to present with the problem, AND Ford is charging OVER $1,000 for the repair. That’s right, for just a single component of just the exterior lighting system of the car, Ford wants over $1,000 (diagnosis, part, labor). There may already have been fatalities caused by this serious defect that were not attributed to the defect. Our local Ford dealer is aware of the problem but insists they can do nothing (except charge over $1,000) because Ford Motor Corporation has not issued a recall. SOMETHING MUST BE DONE. I can refer you to various complaints on internet postings of the identical problem. Thank you.

Throttle stuce as I was pulling in to a parking spot at a local convenience store causing my car to jump a cement stop, hit the car next to me then hit the building. No apparent damage to the building and and some front end damage to the car I hit as well as to my car.

I was going apx. 10 m/p/h after pulling from a driveway. There were two cars at a STOP sign and I put on my brakes, the pedal went clear to the floor, the ABS did not respond and I was unable to stop. I hit the car in front of me and that is how I stopped. This was the second time in five months that the brakes had failed, the first time there was no other car in front.

Set cruise control at 74 mph on interstate 30. Approximately 5 minutes later I heard the engine begin to rev up and the car began to accelerate. I thought the cruise control had hung up so I tried cutting it off on the steering wheel, when this didn’t work I applied the brakes and found out there wasn’t any. The brakes just went to the floor with very little effort. As luck would have it, I was traveling with a male companion who was 6’2” and weighted 200 pounds. I calmly told him we had no brakes and it was obvious the car was accelerating out of control. We were gaining on a large RV in our lane and an 18 wheeler on the right hand lane with no where to go. I told my companion I did not want to drive in the median dividing the highway for fear we would overturn on uneven terrain, by this time we were traveling at 100 mph. As we approached the RV in front of us he grabbed the steering wheel from the passenger side and steered us into the center median and by the grace of god there were no large obstacles , just small bushes and debris until we could safely get back on the highway. When we got back on the interstate I turned the engine off, and because my companion was a large man, who was able to steer a heavy car with no power steering, we maneuvered around cars for sometime before we could coast to a stop. When we tried to restart the vehicle it immediately started and everything began working properly again. The owner of the dealership met us, brought us another vehicle. And decided everything was ok with the car and suspected we had brakes the entire time. I assure you I pumped the brakes and beat on the cruise control with every bit of power I had. They replaced something about the computer system and assured me the vehicle was repaired. It did run fine for several months until one day I was in the driveway and when I went to put it in reverse, I always step on the brake, the engine revved up. My brother-in-law was outside and asked me what I was doing to the car. I showed him how the engine revved up when you applied the brakes. I went to the store , and as I went to leave it did it again, only this time it shot out in reverse and I almost hit a car. I drove straight to the dealership and told them this car was dangerous and I don’t want it any longer. To this day neither of us will use cruise control as we never found out what the problem was.

defective electric motor that turns on airconditioner compressor i understand here in florida there is a backlog of over 1000 ……….waiting for new parts. i hardly used the control pnel in 4 years possible 15 times.

Neither the air conditioner nor the cruise has worked since 46,000 miles. it needs a new air compressor which would cost over $1,000 and there are several other complaints for this issue plastered all over the internet.

The light for the air bag blinks and will not stop as long as the switch is on, the manualin the car is no help or if it has a fix but says it is dangerous in case of an accident it may not work.

My car's light model has been recalled but mine failed before recall. i had it repared locally by a non ford shop. at the time of my recall i had over the 250,000 miles allowed on the car. the local ford shop (woolwine collins ms) refused to repair my car or reinburse me for my repairs i had done about 6 months before the recall. i continue to get notices from ford to correct the problem but what can i do??

The lighting control module (lcm) is to be replaced and the owner is to be notified when the part is to be available for replacement. the recall date was december 21, 2015-recall number: 15v861000. it appears that the ford company is taking too much time and doesn't plan to correct this problem. the problem should have been fixed in a timely manner.

Previously shows an open recall from dec. 2016 for cracking solder on headlights going into the circuit board. needs a solution to correct safety issue.

My headlights failed. ross tire and service performed diagnostic service. informed me of need for lighting control module replacement that could be done for free at a ford dealership because of a recall. ford never sent me a recall notice! i was minutes away from being on the i-10 atchafalya basin bridge which has no shoulder or lighting! the dealership in lafayette fixed my car free of charge however ford has failed to cover the cost of the diagnostics done for me at ross's tire and service. i was on a city street when my lights failed on my way to i-10. i have documentation.

I have toyo versado lx tires on my 2005 mercury grand marquis p225/60/r16 98t dot dot 73a6fwv4410. the tire has developed a bubble in the tread on the inside of the tire. i pulled the tire out of service before any failure or accident. toyo tires is not even interested in hearing about any part of the problem. they just tell me it is out of warranty. i was not making a warranty claim, but am disappointing that they want nothing to do with any of the details of the problem to see if this is an isolated incidence or whether there is a problem with these tires. i am quite sure that there are alot of these tires that are approaching 5 years old that are on the road. i live in kingman arizona, and the car is kept in a garage out of the sun when parked. it is not parked out in the sun regularly during the day either. there has been no accidents or flats on this tire and it has approximately 35,000 miles on it. the remaining tread depth is aprox 5/32 of an inch.

Jan 19, 2016, letter said i would be notified as soon as corrective part became available. this has been over 6 1/2 months. as i'm planning on taking an extended trip, much of it at night, in the near future, i'm concerned my headlights will suddenly go out. please goad them to get on the ball and provide a repair.

Vehicle would not stop when foot brake was applied. when brake was applied vehicle lunged forward. driving on a main road, passing through a school zone and approaching a stop light. this was the second time vehicle would not stop in the past two months. i hit the rear of another vehicle damage occured.

Ford motors issued letter dated january 2016 for safety recall notice 15s39 / nhtsa recall 15v-861. followed up with local dealership 5/11/16 - no parts available yet - call ford corp customer relations. called ford corp - no parts available yet - call your local dealership. called both parties again 8/4/16 and again on 1/18/17. same response. each referred the problem back to the other. is this issue going to be resolved or not? hopefully it won't take an injury or death for it to become a priority with ford.

The headlights have failed due to defective light control module. this failure is noted as ford recall # 15s39, dated april 14,2017. ford customer service rep says vehicle not included but did not provide information about recall #. cannot drive car at night, except to pull lever for bright light toward me (driver).

You allowed ford an entire year to get replacement parts for headlights that go out at night! meanwhile people are being killed because of this defect. trump should fire every one of you - at least we wouldn't be paying for you to not protect the public while catering to the very companies your mission specifies you are to see to it they do not harm the public.

On 12-7-2016 i was told by fremont ford in fremont ca that they would not be able to fix my headlight problem -- a factory recall item -- until march 2017 at the earliest because the part would not be available from ford until then. the headlights won't stay on. i can't drive at night or in the rain (headlights required in the rain in ca). unacceptable.

Airbag fault code 34. passenger side seatbelt pretensions circuit resistance outside limits. circuit was damaged by static discharge from human to outside of door. vehicle was parked during both incidents. no accident. no detonation of explosive charge. same problem occurred 2 years ago on driver side with code 33. numerous reports from other consumers. please inquire to repair facility “safetyrestore dotcom” for number of these failures. airbags are inop when fault occurs. need shielded circuit to prevent reoccurrence.

I was out driving at around 9:30 pm and my headlights just went out, after i got home i looked for lighting issues with the car and discovered a recall. the next morning i contacted autonation ford in memphis tn, where i reside and scheduled an appointment to take care of the recall. i took it in on 8/11/20 , where they did a lcm bypass that was told to me by the service advisor garvin. i picked the car up on 8/15/20 and the lights were working when i left the autonation but after i got home 30 minutes later i went to drop off some mail at the mail drop and the lights went back out. i call autonation service department and spoke with service manager thomas and explained the problem to him and my situation and was told to bring it back in when i could. i took it back on my first off day that they were open . i was then told that they would look at the work they did and if it were still in place anything extra would cost me out of pocket. i don't feel as if i should have to pay for an issue that wasn't properly repaired. as of today october 3,2020 i still have no headlights. i have replaced the multifunction switch, replaced the bulbs and i still have no headlights.

I purchased a 05 mercury grand marquis and had issues with the headlights going out while driving at night. i seen that there was a recall on this issue for my vehicle but when i called the ford dealer they said my car wasn't registered for a recall. they said i would have to pay $135 for a diagnostic test and leave my car for 24 hours. no one was able to inform me why my specific vehicle was excluded from the recall. if i'm telling them that i'm having a problem that they clearly know about why are they charging me to fix it?

Headlight module went out 12-10-2016, brought car to spring hill ford (dealer) dundee il. car was under new recall but the dealer did not have the newly designed part yet so they put in the same defective part and told me they would call me when the new parts become available. they never did despite months of me calling them. now the old design part is acting up again but in 2016 the dealer reported my car as having the recall fixed, which was untrue. my car should never have had been marked down as having the recall fixed. i still have the same old defective part in my car. ford should redo their paperwork and have this recall properly marked as not fixed. i spoke to ford 800-392-3673 this morning and the foreigner on the phone just wasn't getting it.

The air bag light on the driver side stays on and sometimes blinks. this car only has 21,523 miles on it. i'm told this is an indication of a malfunctioning air bag operation. has a recall been issued on this malfunction. the air bag light comes on when the car is stationary and moving. this has created a fear of the air bag not operating correctly in the event of an accident. the repair for it is unknown to me.

The lighting control module (lcm) of my son's 2005 mercury grand marquis malfunctioned while he was driving home at night causing his interior, headlights, and other controls to shut off causing a dangerous situation on an open highway. after checking with several dealers, apparently his mercury is one of the few of the 313,000 recalled vehicles that do not qualify for recall repair of the lighting control module (lcm). frankly, due to the safety concerns and near disaster of the failure of his headlights ford motor company and / or nhtsa needs to expand the number of ford / mercury vehicles that should come under this recall (15s39) this is necessary because his loss of headlights could have led to a crash. right now, the dealers are asking for $125 service fee just to diagnose and anywhere from $480 to $600 for parts and labor. i feel that because of the similar nature of the failure of the lcm that the recall should be expanding to cover his vin and the lcm be replaced free of charge.

Vehicle well maintained. 81,000 miles. getting 3 4 airbag code. i am seeing repairs around $1300-$1400. and many many folks are having the same issue. car inspection due this month. please force manufacturer to cover this safety repair.

Air bag dil code came up 33. took car to repair, cost ~$1300 to replace failed pretensioners driver and passenger. safety was compromised without repair and could have resulted in more severe injury or even death had a collision occurred.

Replaced the lcm in october 2014 per recall. replacement lcm has failed also. dpatrick ford, evansville indiana wants to charge $700.00 to install a bypass wiring part. headlights fail to come on or stay on. hold high beam flash to see at night.

The car was stationary. the right blinker started blinking faster than usual. then the headlights went out. after searching on line i discovered recall 15s39. the problem is the "lcm" lighting control module. i took the car to penske ford (alex uribe) in chula vista. they said they had the part but they lied. they kept my car 5 days, never called me regarding status, i called them on the 5 th day and i was told my car was modified and they could not fix it. i explained it was previously secret service car that's why it had additional wiring. told me i had to remove the wired before they could fix or he could do it for $135 hr. and it would take 5 to 6 hours. i refused. how did the interceptors get repaired or were they not included in the recall? the more i search on line i"m finding the dealers don't want to do the repair because it's too labor intensive. if that's the case what recourse do i have? i have no headlights, no taillights and no dash lights. when i picked up my car they told me "we got your headlights to work, but they could go out anytime" great! i can't drive at night and i'll probably get a ticket for no tail lights. i called ford but the person in the phillipines couldn't grasp what i was saying. is there no u.s. customer service? help please.

Air bag light stays on. when starting car, get 3 dings twice, pause, repeat ... i have been told by a local dealer it will cost $600-$1200 to fix. considering the number of complaints on this issue and the fact that it is a safety issue, why has nhtsa not required a recall? since i cannot afford the cost, i guess i will have to live with it as i am sure many others are doing.

I nov 2014 i took my grand marquis in for a safety recall for the lcm (light control module),. while there, they also replaced the lower steer shaft for a second recall that i was unaware of (recall 13s08). i have been having issues with the steering locking up at low speeds, so i had the ford dealership check it. the showed me the lower shaft that had been replace under the recall (by them) and showed me the intermediate shaft that now needs replace due to being frozen from corrosion. that part was also part of the recall 13s08, but was not replaced. there was a second recall issued also 13r01. now ford is telling me there is no open recalls on my vehicle and that due to age and mileage it is no longer covered under warranty. this is not a warranty issue, it is a safety recall issue, that was not properly fixed the first time. ford now wants to charge me $600 for parts and labor for a repair that should have been completed under a safety recall.

Unintended accel. sometimes when i step on the brake the car accelerates instead. at first i thought it was me and my big feet. after some internet research i find it may be common as the 2005 gets older. i asked if brke pedal could be adjusted so that there was no interference with the gas pedal, i was told no. i had the master cylinder replaced, minimum improvement. one day i "shot" across us19 in ross township when i braked. instead of stopping at a red light, i kept going until i cleared traffic in both directions ruining 2 wheels & tires - subsequently repaired. the car now sits in our driveway, after some other occurrences without incident. i'm leary of driving it & don't want to sell it & get someone injured or killed. fortunately i have a 2004 sable which i drive daily with no such problems! ideas?

My husband and i were on vacation on august 14th 2015 when we were going to leave our location, we turned car on and headlights; when we noticed headlights would not turn on at all. we manually turned the knob multiple times and no lights turned on. when he pulled turn signal lever back toward him, we came to a conclusion the only way we could travel was with the manual high beams on. he had to hold the lever the entire way to our next location in the mountains which was dangerous for us as well as other drivers. the headlights somehow came back on. and on august 26 2015 i just had the same problem with headlights not working unless holding back the manual high beams lever. this time they did not come back on. not only am i as a driver blinding people with high beams, i am risking my driving by holding down a lever while trying to drive. the lever hits the steering wheel and makes it difficult to turn the wheel. this is a serious problem that many others with this year make and model are experiencing. this needs to be addressed and fixed

The headlamps decided to quit working right when i am driving down the highway at 45 miles an hour. could not see anything. other drivers going the opposite direction were honking and flashing their lights at me. this is very dangerous, and somebody could get hurt.

Both low beam headlights went out at the same time and won't come back on. the high beam "flash to pass" works but i don't want to "blind" any on-coming traffic, so i will not drive at night until this problem is repaired !

As i was driving at night, my vehicle's low and high beams (lights) suddenly cut off. unexpectedly, the road i was traveling became very dark because i live in rural areas in west virginia. unfortunately, a second later, my car ran over a small boulder on the side on the road causing a damage (small cracks) at the bottom right hand side of my bumper. nevertheless, i put the emergency lights on until i returned home right away. earlier this week, i used the car again without any lights issues. however a day later, the issue returned again. this time i was traveling in the highway at 60 miles per hour. all low/high beam lights cut off. my only solution was to hold the "flash to pass" lever towards me, and the high beam lights would turn on. however, it is extremely cumbersome driving this way. i've been told by many mechanics that the main culprit is the lighting control module (lcm) and this safety issue has become extremely common in grand marquis especially 2005 models. consumers and perhaps the government may need to further intervene, so ford can do something about this safety/hazardous. in my case, my bottom bumper suffered, but it could have been worse - it could easily cause an accident at any given time. currently, i only use my vehicle during the daylight hours. i've been told that repairs can exceed $700 or more and in some instances, the issue returns within a few months after replacing this part. this electrical issue should perhaps be further investigated as the lcm could be the main culprit, but something else could also be triggering the lcm to fail. thank you greatly!

Driving home on highway at approximately 65 mph. heard a click sound but did not relate it to lights immediately. it was just approaching twilight. i guess we did not immediately notice the lights as there was still some daylight. next night driving in town after dark and the lights went out, just sudden darkness. we were on business hwy 23 going over the overpass in town and were able to get off on a side street and limp home hoping that we would not get stopped and cited. this is my vehicle that i use for my work. i now have to schedule my work around daylight hours as we can not find the light module to replace mine. this is a horrible danger to myself, my family and other drivers as well. we have called multiple places to find the module and they all say they can not get them. the most frightening of all, we have never been sent a recall notice on this. we are going to try a garage that services all the state patrol and police cars in this part of wisconsin. there are still some of the mercury's out there in service. i suspect they will surely supply them with the modules. hope to find one there so i can resume normal work hours and not have to schedule daylight only work meetings. i have loved this car for 8 years. would hate to have to give it up for something like this but the fact that mercury does not respond is upsetting to say the least. *tr

This started out with lights and windshield wipers cutting off and on with no apparent wearing. also burning smell. took it in got that fixed. i was informed this had occurred in others same exact thing. right after that next thing was dash lights for abs, airbag, and anti skid stay on. i took it to 2 places. was told it was a module unit by one place the other couldn't find a reason. i have not had it fixed since i couldn't get a clear reason for it, also the car runs fine. the lights must mean something. i'm going to sell it but need to get as much a possible for it and this will take away from the buying price. need to fix but was told the module unit repair seems strange. please help any advice would be helpful. thank you *tr

Cannot shut lights off when i shut off the car. when i turn them on the sometimes work and sometimes don't. riding down the hwy they just go off. i have been stopped by the police. drivers window works sometimes and does nor at other times. buttons for the passenger seat also works whenever it wants to. *tr

The issue described in pe08066 happened to me last night. while driving at approx 50 mph my headlights tuned off spontaneously. luckily i had other cars in front and behind me and could still see the road because of their lights. my turn signal functioned when i signaled i was pulling over, and it appeared my side markers were still on (yellow glow off cars around me). i do not know if my tail lights were still on. i turned my headlight dial from automatic to manual headlights, and there was no difference. then, my headlights came back on spontaneously. they were out for a total for 10-15 second. this is very dangerous. *tr

Headlights intermittently fail without warning and cannot be regained with headlight switch. in fact, no position operates with the headlight switch - no parking lights, no headlights, etc. only after a seemingly random cooling period will the module allow the circuit to re-engage. ford issued recall 14n01 but to date has not provided car dealers nor retail customers with a replacement switch. one ford dealer ( tom peck ford 608-676-2273) says back orders are unfilled . no ford dealers nor after market auto parts companies are able to obtain the part. even if the vehicle owner attempts to purchase and replace the small cigarette sized box called a "light control module" out of pocket, rather than waiting on ford, it cannot be found on the market in companies like advance auto parts. this is not intended as a shrill complaint about ford. but the danger is huge to the driver and other vehicles when this part randomly causes all power to be lost to the headlights. at highway speeds, it is very difficult to maintain control of the vehicle to a stop in total darkness. the part failure is increasing in frequency, and is has become a safety menace. some ford or mercury owners may not be affluent enough to own a second vehicle to drive only at night. no drivers want to encounter another vehicle with that kind of malfunction. in fact, all the vehicles with that known hazard should be off the road at night. no doubt ford has been addressing the light control module issue since the april 2014 recall, but certainly not with the urgency required. *tr

Headlights suddenly went out while driving on interstate highway at night. i had received a "customer satisfaction program" recall from ford motor company in april of this year advising that the "lighting control module" (lcm) could fail causing the loss of headlights. i took my car to the local dealership the next day. the car was examined, the defect was acknowledged, and the replacement lcm was ordered. it has now been well over two months since the lcm was ordered. the dealership claims that the supply of the lcm is short due to the massive number of defects. i have pleaded for relief by emailing ford but they have not seen fit to even respond to my communication. it is beyond my comprehension how any prudent person, corporation, or administration could categorize losing the headlights as anything other than a safety issue! it is for this reason that little action is being taken to correct this potentially fatal situation. *tr

The air bag warning light comes on, blinks the code 34 two times then stays on. after researching i find that numerous 2005 mercury grand marquis have had the same problem. this is something that needs to be fixed by ford. i have had more problems with this model than i have ever had with any other car. i have had to replace the a/c - heating system, front light system (after tons of complaints by other people ford finally recalled and fixed the problem. why do you wait? if one person complains, much less numerous others it should be fixed by ford due to faulty parts. of course now i will have to have it fixed and it is expensive! i use to have all the faith in the world in ford but no more. you buy parts not made in america and this is the result and of course you don't put the parts where they can be easily accessible so the owner can repair it themselves and the dealerships charge astronomical fees to fix it. wonder how long before ford acknowledges and recalls or at least fixes the problem when someone takes in the car. *tr

Failed lamp control module, headlights fail to work, only high beams work when lever is held in flash position. ford issued an extended warranty program 14no1 in the spring of 2104 for just this part for 15 years or 250,000 miles. no replacement parts are available in the usa. the dealer says they have a waiting list that goes back six months. have talked to regional managers in dearborn, mich. all say they have no idea of a shipping date, much less a delivery date, from supplier. won't indicate how many vehicles are effected, but has to be many due to extended warranty program. their solution is if the lights don't come on or go out while driving is to hit under the dash to the right of the steering column and they should come on. this means there are cars on the road that people are driving during daylight hours knowing that their cars headlights are not working correctly, but no parts available from ford to honor warranty. this means that cars are being used that may not be legal to drive in the rain (most states have headlight on if raining law) and also will not pass state inspection. i understand that parts are not always readily available, but should be available in several days. if this is a known problem, why are there no parts? no other help or loaner vehicle program is available. *tr

In early june the headlights started going out with no warning. they would also flash on and off when the wipers were on. took the car to a mechanic and he said the lcm was bad. $500 to repair. was looking online for a lcm and seen that ford was extending their warranty on the lcm under the number 14n01. looked at my ford recall letters and seen that ford sent out this warranty 14n01 to me in april of 2014. took car to the dealer on 11 august and they confirmed the lcm was bad and would replace it. it is now 15 september and the parts are still not available. now the wipers and wiper washer come on even when the wiper switch is off. lights come on when their not supposed to. anti-skid was also flashing on and off. car may be unsafe to drive but i need transportation for work and cannot always use my wife's car. ford will not offer a car for me to use. should this be a safety recall? do i have any options with ford? *tr

While driving down the highway @ 65 mph the headlights suddenly went out causing a very dangerous situation. i tried the switch in every position to no avail the only solution was to use the flash to pass bar. i safely pulled off the road and tried restarting the car and moving the switch to different positions, nothing would work. the only way to use the lights is the flash to pass (bright lights) switch which causes not only a safety hazard to my family and other drivers but is against the law to drive with only bright lights. ford has issued (customer satisfaction program 14n01) which is a step in the right direction but the dealerships all say that the lcm is on backorder and will be at least 45 days to receive this safety hazard part. mt family is now stuck in a vehicle that can only be safely driven during daylight hours. please help, parts stores have these parts and ford should have to be required to purchase them if they can not provide the parts until 45 days later. is this safety issue going to take someone dying *trbefore it is rectified? *tr

High and low beam headlights failed while driving at high speed on dark 2 lane highway in upstate ny. fumbled with light controls until by random chance discovered that by holding "flash to pass" stalk back, high beams could be activated. made it home steering with the right hand and holding flash to pass with left, blinding oncoming drivers with the high beams all the way. this is an intermittent problem in the lighting control module (lcm) that can sometimes be cured by kicking the lcm, which is located under the dashboard above the accelerator pedal. hard to do at night, on a dark road, at high speed, in traffic, while holding the flash to pass stalk with the left hand and steering with the right hand. this intermittent light failure occurred again the week of may 25, 2014. this vehicle should not be driven at night and should be recalled immediately before someone gets killed. *tr

Lost headlights. lighting control module failed. it was dark and i was out of state, approximately 325 miles from home. i stayed in va and returned home in ny state the next day during daylight hours. i traveled through a mandatory "headlight one zone" on route 15 in maryland. i traveled through construction zones in pa on i81, where headlights are required to be on. approximately two weeks earlier i received a letter from ford(customer satisfaction program 14n01) notifying me that this failed part was now part of an extended warranty. problem is that the part is not available and ford motor co. cannot tell me when it will be available. this should have been a safety recall. imagine an unsuspecting driver, driving at night on a two lane country road when this part fails. if this driver is going around a corner, the car would almost certainly leave the road and crash. *tr

Sudden acceleration. the car did this after starting it in the driveway. upon placing the car in drive the car accelerated burning rubber in the driveway. had to stand on brakes and turn ignition off to stop car. the second incidence happened while braking for a red light, i had to shift car into neutral to stop car. unsure of mileage in this instance. most recently while in south carolina i was sitting at a red light with my foot on the brake the car suddenly accelerated and i had to shift to neutral to avoid rear ending car in front of me. At about 8 pm, i was driving on an interstate in heavy traffic when the headlights went out. i was able to pull off the interstate. i turned the headlight switch on and off, but the headlights did not come back on. after a few minutes, the headlights just came back on. i turned on my blinker to get back on the interstate and the headlights went off again. my husband and i swapped seats and he took over the driving. the lights came back on and he pulled onto the interstate. the lights went off again and as long as he pulled the blinker towards him, then we had bright lights. whenever he released the blinker, the lights went out. after driving for about 10 minutes with the bright lights on, the dim headlights came back on and stayed on for the next hour as we drove home. he was told at a ford dealership that it was the light switch, so he replaced the switch. the next night the headlights went off again. i pulled off the road for a few minutes and the lights came back on and stayed on until we got home about 20 minutes later. we have not driven the car at night since then. we have since learned via this site that there is a problem with the light control module. the service man in the ford parts department said it was his experience that when this happened it was the light switch. so we spent $137 on a part that we did not need. *tr

The lights were on in normal mode when i heard a click and they suddenly cut out. i was driving slowly in town and was able to pull over; i discovered that i could hold the turn signal control signal for the passing brights and get light; otherwise no lighting would turn on regardless of attempts to change the lighting mode and restarting the car. eventually the lights came back days later, but have continued to cut out intermittently ever since. this is a major safety hazard as there is no predicting the failure, and the brights are not good to have to hold to use. *js

Similar to events as published in nhtsa action number pe08066, i was driving on the interstate at night and the headlights suddenly went dark. no warning, just went out. pulled off onto shoulder and could not avoid sliding off the road - very dangerous. finally figured out if you pull the turn signal lever all the way towards you it will turn the bright headlights on, but you have to hold it on position .. if you let go the headlights go back out. the problem is intermittent and appears without warning. 1000's of complaints about this same issue all over the internet - so i can't believe the agency closed the original investigation?? what could be more dangerous than losing your headlights at night?? there should be an immediate recall from ford motor co. on this issue! my local ford dealer and communications to ford motor co. have produced no help. this is approximately a $700 repair at the dealership for a proven defective "lighting control module". this is a "safety-related" issue if there ever was one! *tr

While driving on the massachusetts turnpike at night the headlights shut off with no warning, notice or anything. never had this happen before. scared us to death!!! we immediately turned the signal to pull over to the shoulder and then they came back on. about 2 minutes later they went off again. my boyfriend pulled over to the shoulder and turned on the hazard lights and shut the car off. we then turned the car back on and had no headlights, just marker lights. but, if you held the stick for the high beams you could use those. then the lights miraculously clicked on and stayed on for the rest of the way home. this has been a continuous problem. after much research i have found out it is the lighting control module. approximately a $650 part and about $200 for labor. i contacted ford motor company and they do not feel that this is a safety issue and are going to do nothing about it!!! really!!!! i am part of a website and i get numerous emails for people that have the same problem. i am afraid to drive at night because i never know when the lights will work or not. i don't want to blind people driving behind them and it just really sucks that ford does not think that driving down the road at night with no headlights is not a safety concern.... why doesn't the ford executive try driving home in the dark with my car and see how he likes it. then we will see if it is a safety issue or not, huh?? *tr

While driving at night, my headlights without warning, extinguished. i turned the 'high beams' on and they also failed to light. i stopped and after a few minutes, the lights came back on. i searched the internet and found that many ford crown victoria / mercury grand marquis (multiple model year) automobiles are suffering from the same problem. it is apparently a failure in the 'lighting control module' (lcm). there are many web sites that offer re-manufactured lcm's but i question why this is not a safety recall? i think that losing your headlights while driving at night would somehow qualify as a safety hazard and this should be the manufacturer's responsibility to fix this problem. *tr

We had just left a funeral home and driving back home on a 4 lane road. we turned to avoid getting on the highway immediately and decided to take another route. as we were heading up this 2 lane road that was dark all of a sudden our headlights and instrument panel lights went out and cars coming at us were flashing their lights. i slowed down and was able to pull over to a side street. sat there trying to determine why the lights were out. turned the switch from the on position to the automatic position and the lights came back on. we drove all the way home on back roads to avoid getting on the interstate, not knowing if the lights would go out or not. read the manual to see if we had missed anything and then got on the internet and saw the hundreds of people having the same thing happen to them. i will contact the dealer and see about fixing it but from what i have read, the light control module is bad and so are the replacements. i am hopeful that there is a newer improved model that is now being used. thank god we were not on the highway or we could have been killed. this is a serious problem. *tr

While driving after dark the headlights and dashboard lights went dark. while attempting to restore the lights, they came back on. within ten miles, this event occurred two more times. i went to my local mercury dealer who told me that the module that controlled the headlights and dashboard lights was not available. he also told me that his ordering system also showed him that there were almost 600 of these parts were on back-order. he also told me that one of the components of the module was unavailable and that there was no anticipated date when the module might be available. he also told me that 2005 was the only model year that this part would fit and that the 2004 or 2006 similar parts would not work in the 2005 model year. he also told me that if the part were available that it would cost almost $600 dollars not installed. this part also fits the 2005 ford crown victoria but no other makes or models. this leads me to believe that ford re-engineered this model for the 2005 model and discovered that it was a faulty design and redesigned it for the 2006 model and failed to report the problem to anyone. they have used up all of whatever inventory of these parts they ever manufactured and appear to have no plans to make any more. i have shopped most of florida's junk yards and have not been able to locate any 2005 mercury or ford cars from which to obtain a used part. before daylight this morning while driving my wife to the doctor, the headlights and dash lights went out once again and came back on after about a mile. this is a serious safety issue. i believe that your agency should not only require ford to develop an immediate fix for this problem, but should require ford to supply this part at no cost to the affected owners since it is pretty clear that they were aware of the problem and tried to hide it from the public and the government. *tr

Description of the complaint: lcm known defect: both headlights failed, in both dim and high-beam positions. they will not come on in either the automatic or manual dashboard switch positions. I was driving to work at 5:50 am in the dark when on coming traffic began flashing their headlights at me. i then noticed that my headlights (which i always have set on automatic) had gone out without warning. i had to drive a short distance to find a safe place to pull off the road. i could not get the headlights to come on with the switch in either the automatic or manual settings. i repeatedly shut the car off and restarted it without any luck. i had to wait until the sun came up to continue driving to work. i goggled this headlight problem and found it is a very common failure of the lighting control module in the 2003-2005 ford crown victoria and mercury grand marquis. i contacted ford motor co. but was told there was no recall on these cars with this common and very dangerous defect and was directed to take my car to a ford dealer for service. i personally think ford should be responsible for repairing this defect with no cost to the customer. *tr

While traveling at night on the interstate, the head lights on our 2005 mercury grand marquis quit working and we had to pull over in the emergency stopping lane. all hazard, marker lights and dash lights continued to work. after spending a few minutes on the side of the road, the head lights began to work again and we made it to our destination. i thought i might have touched something wrong at the time as i do not drive this car very often (or that maybe too much light had flashed on the light sensor on the dash and made them go out.) this is my wife's car and she uses it mostly during daytime. the car is not driven very often at night and so it was a quite a while before this happen again. it is now happening more often and after talking to others, it appears that this is much more common on grand marquis, crown vics, and towncars than i would have ever thought. i believe that this is a design defect of ford's lighting control module (lcm) part# 7z-13c788-aa and ford should have recalled and replaced these defective lcm's long before now. we have never been contacted by ford about a recall and i could not find any information about a lcm recall on ford's or any other website. since it looks like ford is not interested in my safety, i have placed an order to purchase ford's improved replacement lcm for my car. i really don't think i should have had to pay for this item to replace their obvious defective component. if ford didn't think they had a defective product, they would not have made several improvements on their lcm and re-classified it as 7z-13c788-ac instead of -aa. *tr

In october 2011, i was driving at night when my headlights went off. i pulled into a parking lot to investigate the problem. i got out and took a walk around the car and all the lights were working except the headlights. i turned the lights switch off for a few minutes and the lights came back on. the problem worsened and i found that i could hold the "momentary" high beam switch on and the headlights would work -- as long as i held the switch in the high beam position. the situation worsened, and now the headlights will not come on for any length of time. the problem has escalated from october 2011 until late may 2012. if i need to drive the car at night, i must hold the "momentary" high beam switch while i drive. once in a while you can see the headlights come on because the lights get extremely bright. then i can release the "momentary" high beam switch. the lights will only stay on for about 10 seconds and then go back off. my mechanic told me that many mercury grand marquis and ford crown victoria's around the model year of my car have this problem. he has traced the problem to something called the lighting control module. it seems to me that this is an engineering problem. ford wants $600.00 just for the part. if you search the internet for similar problems, you will find an abundance of very similar situations as i have described to you. not everyone is reporting this problem. please help! updated 08/20/12

Let me start by saying this is a safety risk that could lead to loss of life. while driving at night, headlights went out. instrument illumination stayed on. headlight switch was cycled and the headlights cam back on. they turned off minutes later. after pulling over and cycling the bright lights and the headlamp switch, it was determined that driving with the signal light pulled back into bright-flash position was the only way to drive. this was after several pull-off-the-road events. we took the vehicle to the mechanic, who determined the headlight switch to be bad. $300 afterwards, the intermittent symptoms went away. however, the headlights never illuminated. from 12/11 through 5/12, the vehicle was driven only during the day -- occasionally at night, but with the turn signal pulled back to highbeam flash. after reviewing many internet posts, i discovered the light control module (lcm) was the suspect component. the dealership price for this component, as of 5/12, is $521.67. i removed the lcm and opened it to inspect. after nothing was found (burned components, cold solder joints, etc.), i reassembled and reinstalled it. after an operational check to see if reseating the connectors fix it, i discovered the headlight system fully functional. we'll see if the problem repeats itself. this problem was reported an many internet repair posts for 2003-2005 ford crown vics and grand marquis. *tr

At approximately 11:00 pm on 3/24/12, i suddenly lost my headlights as i was driving south through north carolina on interstate-95. i pulled into a rest area, and after a few minutes, my headlights came back on when i restarted the car. i drove for a few more hours without further incident. at approximately 8:00 pm on 3/25/12, i lost my headlights again while driving through florida. fortunately, i was only a few miles away from my motel when the incident occurred. the next morning, 3/26/12, i took my car to an independently-owned garage, and the mechanic diagnosed the problem as a defective light control module. he was able to obtain a new module from a nearby ford dealership and successfully install the module into my car. there is no question the light control module was defective because the mechanic was unable to restore my headlights by first trying to replace the headlight switch or the headlight dimmer switch. what's more, he was unable to get the defective light control module to respond to an external computer command. the repair cost $816.77. i was concerned that i suddenly lost my headlights while driving on a busy interstate highway, but even more concerned when i heard a parts specialist at the ford dealership that provided my new replacement light control module claim his dealership was replacing an average of three of these modules weekly on ford crown victoria patrol cars being driven by local police. the idea of policeman losing their headlights during high speed pursuits at night made me very concerned. my concern was heightened when i started investigating the matter on the internet and read many stories similar to mine. a number of these stories suggested that ford has known about these defective light control modules for quite some time and that a recall has long been in order. thank you for your attention to this serious matter. *tr

Upon starting up 2005 mercury marquis (~24000 miles) and placing car into drive, car accelerated at a high rate of speed and crashed into a gas station pump. the car accelerator malfunctioned and was in a "jammed state". the driver immediately put right foot then both feet on brake trying to get the vehicle to stop. the car would not slow much less stop. driver suffered very serious eye injury and currently has no sight in injured left eye. there is the risk of losing left eye. passenger suffered fractured sternum and other bruising. both driver and passenger are traumatized from this car accelerator malfunction. *tr

It was approx. 2:30am [night time] and i was driving on a rural state highway @ 65mph with the cruise control set. the headlights on my 2005 mercury grand marquis suddely went out. the switch was set to automatic on / off. visibility instantly became zero in the pitch black.. as i was 20 miles outside of town on a state highway in an unpopulated area with no lighting.. not even moon light. i slammed on my breaks running off the roadway into the drainage ditch.. taking over 100 feet to stop. after gaining my composure, i noticed that my dashlights were still working along with my yellow warning lights. i tried the headlights switch by changing it from off, to full on- to auto... with no success at first. but after 3-4 minutes the lights suddenly came back on and worked in both the auto & in the switched 'on' positions for 20-30 seconds and then shut off. so i knew the problem wasn't with a blown fuse. this continued to be the cycle.. the headlights would come on for 20-30 seconds and then shut off for several minutes before working again. by pulling the turn control / high beam lever toward me, i was able to get the passing light setting of my headlights to work and was able to drive back home... but this created a danger to vehicles i met.. as it blinded them. i couldn't turn off the bright passing beam without going dark on the roadway. next morning i checked the internet about this problem and discovered that 1000's of other mercury grand marquis owners have had this same problem.. that mercury has known about this problem for years... with similar problems prior to 2005. not only has mercury knowingly endangered my and the other owners [and their faimlies] lives.. mercury has created a very profitable income charging its customers close to $700 for a repair that they know is the result of a faulty factory installed headlight control module. this rates a recall! *tt

The lights went out while driving in the city at night. i pulled over and played with the light switch until they came back on. i had trouble with the lights several times, before i replaced the light switch on 01/04/12. on a trip to the store tonight, the lights went out again. after checking on the internet, it seems it must be the lcm module, at a cost of $700, to $900. dollars. it seems this is a very dangerous problem with ford motor co, vehicles. *tr

Lighting control module relay intermittent: after reading other peoples incident reports i thank god for getting my family through our involvement with this head light failure situation. we were out of town and got into our car and no headlights! this is a problem that needs to be considered a high priority risk but unfortunately not until a major death related situation will get this resolved. but with the head lights being in the front of the car and a crash will destroy the evidence. i write this so my family and lawyers will be in the loop about this situation. thank you ford for taking this seriously. knowing this i sure hope when i sell my ford mercury that i am not held liable with the manufacturer. we are still coping with the issue. we try to get off the roads by dark. *tr

The headlights do not turn on automatically or manually, day or dark at night, unless you use the bright lights. he lights will not turn on by the control lever. the lights will only work by pulling and holding the light control lever towards the driver thereby turning the bright lights on. the bright lights will not stay on unless you hold the lever with your hand. the headlights still do not turn on even if you turn the control inside the car. i looked at all the fuses in the fusebox . i di not see any split wires in the fuse indicating a blown fuse. *tr

Headlights go out or sometimes will not come on. lighting control module relay intermitten. lights go out with no warning while driving. high beams and cornering lights also inop when acting up.getting worse with time. this is a serious safty issue as it happens on freways, highways etc. we have to tap the lcm in order to get the lights back on but they go out again. this is a very expensive fix ($800) so i cant afford to have replaced. please this should be a recall. *tr

While driving my car at in the very early morning both headlights failed on a curvy downhill road. i switched the headlight switch from the automatic position to the manual "on" position, but the headlights did not come back on. i pushed the high beam switch forward to the high beam position but this failed to turn on the high beams. i pulled the high beam switch back to the high beam "flash" position which did illuminate the high beams. i held the switch back in this position (to the displeasure of approaching drivers) until i found a safe place to pull over. i cycled the headlight switch numerous times with no effect. the light did finally come back on their own for a short time, but them went off again. this happened several times unit they finally did some back on for a lengthy period of time. the next day the same situation occurred. at all times the other lights (dash, parking, etc) continued to operate. very dangerous. *tr

While driving at night, my wife put on the left turn signal and the headlights immediately failed, creating a dangerous situation. she frantically fiddled with various light controls until finally discovering that by manually holding the "flash to pass" high beam lever, it brought the headlights on allowing her to make it home. the headlights were checked by the ford dealer on august 5, 2011. tests revealed no cause but the mechanic suspected the light control module. he advised further driving, which i did that same evening only to experience repeated headlight failure when using either turn signal or activating the high beams. then i discovered a number of internet postings in which drivers experienced the same problem with grand marquis' or ford crown victorias made in the 2000's. then i found a website which stated that the original light control module had a major problem involving a bad circuit that is the definitive cause of the problem. the local ford dealer acknowledged awareness of the problem (even citing several crown victoria police interceptors that required lcm replacement), but because ford has not issued a recall, they wanted over $1,000 for diagnosis, part, and labor. a website also noted that ford recently completely revised the lcm with an internal redesign by ford engineers so that the new lcms will never fail. the website also noted that some dealers continue to sell the old defective lcm which will only fail again. my opinion: besides not wanting to pay an exhorbitant amount to replace one component of a vehicle's light system, it appears ford is fully aware of a potentially deadly defect affecting many thousands of grand marquis' and crown victorias currently in use, but has not issued a recall. this potentially deadly defect must be addressed! it is entirely possible fatal accidents have already occurred but were misattributed.

Both headlights failed, in both dim and high-beam positions. they will not come on in either the automatic or manual dashboard switch positions. My wife and i were pulling into a four lane highway at 9:30 pm in the evening, after finishing dinner. once we had approached highway speed of about 45 to 50 mph, our front head lights went out. immediately my wife pulled off the highway with our lights out, i got out of the auto to insure the lights had indeed gone out...yes, they were out black as midnight. i asked my wife to see if they would come back just for the heck of trying something. yes the lights did come back on and remained on for the remainder of our 25 minute drive. as my wife and i were driving home, she indicated to me this was not the first time, only one of several times as she was driving, it might be in the rain day or night, she never knew when it would happen, however at this time, the lights seem to go out on a regular basic. i'm going to see if the dealer can repair, what i have been lead to believe is the lcm, and to expect a charge up to $800.00+, this is a horrible accident waiting to occur, and a expense that i think merc. show absorb, with all of the problems with the same problem for several years now, i would hope a nation wide recall should take place, before the is loss of life. i thank you for your time, and i do appreciate any help you may be able to offer. kind regards, owner of the above auto, 2005 merc. grand marq. light control module, problem. *tr

While driving the headlights went completely out. the high beams would only come on if you pulled the lever forward and this was only momentarily. was not able to use the switch to turn them back on. had to pull over in a parking lot because it was dark. after a few minutes the lights started to work again but soon failed again.

I was driving on i-81 at night, i operated my left turn signal while accelerating to about 75 mph to pass a truck and my headlights went out. i accidently forced the high beam on by flipping the turn/high beam lever and i held the lever in that position until i could return to the right lane behind the truck and stop on the roadside. to say i thought i was going to die is not simply drama. the worst part was not knowing if my brake lights were working. while off the road, i could not duplicate the failure. i put on the low beam and proceeded on i-81. after some miles, i again tried the left turn signal and again the lights went out. this time i was ready, and used the high beam lever to get to the roadside. again i could not duplicate the failure. i exited as soon as possible, running on low beam, and the lights went out again on the ramp when i operated the left turn signal. i continued to ocala by way of atlanta, running in daylight only. i took the car to ocala ford as soon as i arrived in ocala. the dealer had the car several days and finally duplicated the failure. they replaced a module at the cost of $786.00 and said the car was safe to drive. no repair was done to the turn signal. i got the module from the dealer and sent it to nhtsa for testing to determine if it actually was defective. if not, then my car presents a risk to everyone sharing the highway with me at night, because the problem would still be there. in my opinion, sudden and catastrophic failure such as this presents fatal risk to anyone involved in a crash, including the general public. this failure has nothing to do with reasonable wear and tear, it is a design/manufacturing defect, worsened by a failure by ford to provide a diagnostic program. since the problem is intermittent, people may have already died and no trace of the failure would be found by examining the wreck. updated 01/19/11/*jb updated 01/20/11 *bf

Was driving on frreway at night when lights turned off pulled over on side of the freeway switch the lights on off for about 3 min then they turned on. since then it has been a very life threatning situation when driving at night lights turn off more freaquenty ready to sue ford for not takeing responsobility and issuing a national recall for this deffect. i was told by a close friend that works for a mercury dealer that it is the lighting control module and that all police vehicles with this problem had them replaced.

The headlights will turn off intermittently. always at night. this happens when the light switch is in the auto and manual positions. when the lights turn off , putting the light switch to either auto or manual on, does not turn the headlights back on. only, after waiting for 20, 30, 40 or more seconds will the lights come on when operating the light switch. the has happened when the car is parked and while driving (city streets, freeway). this cycle of turning off and on has occurred when getting onto a freeway and repeats at intervals for 30 minutes or more. the problem was only observed by the ford dealer technician when he could drive the auto home at night for two consecutive nights. it was determined that a lighting control module was at fault. the part number is 5w7z-13c788-ac. the old part is not available. *tr

Trunk latch on key fob does not require as much pressure as say the button to unlock, lock, or panic(emergency). at the slightest swipe over the trunk icon the release is engaged, the trunk on this vehicle has been left open and unattended several times. this can cause loss to an occupant who may be traveling with valuables. when entering a passage on the freeway such as a tunnel, the exterior bright lights turn on by themselves. the reason we know is because the highbeam icon becomes illuminated to blue on the dash panel. *tr

Both front inner brakes not properly contacting rotor. only a 1 inch width of inner brake pads have ever contacted rotor. based upon the amount of rust and pitting of the non contact area of the rotors it appears that the brake pads were never contacting properly. in all my years of servicing vehicles i have never seen this type of defect before. *tr

Arrived at son's home and stopped in driveway with foot on brake when vehicle suddenly accelerated uncontrollably, spinning wheels in gravel driveway. driver swerved to avoid hitting garage and ran head on into a pine tree resulting in severe damage to entire front end of vehicle (expect vehicle to be considered a total loss) and injuries to the driver and two passengers. both driver and passenger airbags deployed. prior to arriving at destination, driver had used the cruise control on the vehicle. vehicle has not yet been moved and am currently waiting for insurance adjuster to inspect vehicle. both driver and front seat passenger suffered severe bruising on face, arms, chest and abdomen, presumably from deployment of the air bags as well as from the seat belts. rear seat passenger suffered a contusion on the forehead and a sprained hand. all vehicle occupants were transported to hospital for evaluation and released. *tr

Over the past 20 years, i have owned 6 cars (5 cadillacs and 1 mercury) equipped with michelin tires. of these 24 tires, i experienced tread separation failure on 18 of the tires and 1 sidewall failure at 13000 miles. two tires, i removed at 25000 miles to avoid problems as i was planning a long trip. three of the tires are still on one car with about 13000 miles on those tires. the standard size for the cadillac is 215/65-16. michelin only recommends that i speak with their dealer. the dealer said he could not adjust for the tires. needless to say i did not replace the failed tires with michelin tires. i experienced an unreasonable tread separation failure rate with michelin tires (time will tell for the remaining 3 tires). this indicates a systemic problem with the michelin design/manufacturing. i did a little research on the subject of tread separation failures and the resulting problems and found that there are some deaths attributable to tread separation failures. because of this and the extremely high failure rate, i feel that the michelin radial tires present a serious safety hazard. i recommend the nhtsa investigate this problem. note: i read that tires manufactured in europe do not have this problem due to a different design/manufacturing process. if this is so, the us should mandate the european design for us manufactured tires. i have specialized education in the automotive industry through the general motors institute and 6 years experience manufacturing automobiles. the approximate incident date is for the latest incident on the 13000 mile tire. before that, i experienced 2 tire failures around the first of june. *tr

In feb., 2007, my mother-in-law bought a set (4) of michelin symmetry tires for her mercury marquis. within two months, one had a sidewall blow out. the dealer told her that she must have hit something, so she bought a replacement tire. last week, may 30, 2008, while driving from myrtle beach to rock hill, sc, another tire had a sidewall blowout. after waiting almost 2 hours in 90 degree heat, aaa arrived and changed the tire. she drove to two tire stores looking for a replacement. after purchasing one at the local ford dealer, she started home again. within 50 miles, another tire had a sidewall blowout. this time while waiting for aaa, a schp officer stopped and at least provided some water. she drove home on the temporary replacement tire. today we are going back to the dealer that installed the original tires. i suspect that her options will be to either purchase another michelin symmetry, or an entire replacement set. on her limited income, she'll probably just but the michelin. her daughter and i are concerned with her driving on long trips with these tires. i have found 23 pages of complaints on michelin tires on the consumeraffairs.com website. *tr

I purchased a 2005 grand marques from this company. i was driving one day (11/5/07) when the vehicle caught on fire, i was lucky enough to be in front of firestone service station. as soon as i exit the vehicle the engine burst into flames. firestone along with the assistant of the charlotte fire dept came to my rescue siding that it was an electrical fire. the car was towed back to the dealer for repair. after admitting that it was a malfunction of the sensor in the heating element, insurance company was off the hook. but i'm left to fight of not wanting to repair a burnt engine and repainting the car. what i'masking for is a car of equal value. my argument is that if list on car facts, the vehicle is no longer worst what i owe. plus six weeks prior to the fire i had just paid 1500.00 for my 30,000 service. i received a responds for bbb that mercy states that it not their fault, but a manufacturer defect. i'm desperate need of assistant on what to do next. and/or what other options do i have other that excepting a repair job with no guarantee. so far i have not received my vehicle back from the dealer queen lincoln mercy, it is still been repaired. *tr

2005 mercury grand marquis brake failure. **cc the consumer stated when he attempted to apply the brakes, the vehicle slowed most of the way down to the stop, then the consumer lost control of the vehicle and ended up stopping 10 to 20 feet of where he intended to stop. the consumer believed there was a serious brake issue with the vehicle. the consumer returned the vehicle to the dealer and the contract was cancelled. the consumer stated a rented a 2006 lincoln town car and it exhibited the same brake failure twice in a short time. the brakes did not stop the vehicle in a controlled manner. *jb see also 10184790. *dsy

Two problems with the horn since i purchased my car in dec 2004: 1) sounds when i haven't even hit it at all and 2) won't sound when i need it unless i hit it in exactly the right place which seems to change every time i need it! a couple of times when it sounded on it's own it lasted almost a full minute! hitting it had no effect. and then, a couple of times when i needed it, it never sounded! this scares the i-don't-know-what out of me and everyone around me! i've taken it to darcars on branch avenue in marlow heights, md. a number of times in 2006. they were able to repeat symptoms, and did do something that fixed problems for awhile. but problems keep resurfacing. second week of jan 2006, horn went off on it's own while i was in a curve to the right, and the car to the left of me almost went off the road. serious safety issue!! almost better to not even have this horn! *jb

On saturday, oct. 21, 2006 at approximately 12:00pm i was driving on i-95 just south of port saint lucie florida, traveling at 70 mph, when i experienced a catastrophic blow out of the right rear tire on my 2005 mercury grand marquis, with 14,980 mile on the odometer. the tires were all original equipment tires. the vehicle sustained no damage but the sidewalls were completely shredded, after traveling about 500 to 600 feet to pull over to the shoulder of the roadway. i had to purchase a new michelin tire at a cost of $144.96 -with a 65,000 mi. warranty! the tire that blew with less than 14,980mi was not warranted or pro rated by the dealer or by michelin. i did not run over anything in the roadway, and brought the tire to two different tire shops and they could not figure out what happened. i called michelin and they told there was nothing they could do. this is ridiculous! michelin, advertises itself as one of the "safest" tires on the road, -well this particular one certainly was not. it is a p225-60r16 energy lx4. i am reporting this in hope you may be able to get michelin to help defray the cost of the new tire, and or see if there is a safety defect with this style of tire, which may warrant further action. i remain anxiously awaiting your reply. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated while backing out of a parking space at 5 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and the vehicle surged in reverse. the contact shifted into neutral, the engine revved, and the tachometer rose quickly. the vehicle was taken to a service dealer, where the dealer was unable to duplicate or determine the problem. the dealer told the consumer, the incident was due to driver error and when she applied the brake she inadvertently pressed the accelerator as well. updated 09/11/06. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle's airbags did not deploy after colliding head on with another vehicle. the contact approached a traffic light at 30 mph to turn left when another vehicle ran the red light and caused the collision. the air bags did not deploy and injuries were sustained. the police was contacted and a report was taken. the vehicle was towed to the dealer who offered no explanation as to why the air bags did not deploy. updated 08/29/06. *jb

Knocking noise from engine/transmission area when car is stopped at idle, transmission in gear, windows closed and heater fan off. problem: intermittent, erratic, muffled knocking noise. heard from inside the car. *jb

2005 grand marquis passenger side air bag light illuminated. *ts the air bag light remained on unless the person sitting in the passenger seat weighed 190 lbs or more. a representative of the manufacturer called and explained that did everything they could do until the part was recalled. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated the horn only sounded with extreme pressure being applied to the right side of the steering wheel. the horn did not sound when any other area of the steering wheel was depressed. the vehicle was taken to the service dealer, who determined the horn was not working properly, but could not determine how to remedy the problem without possibly causing the airbag to deploy. the only work completed by the dealer was an attempt to remove the steering wheel cover to inspect the horn connection. this resulted in the horn sounding continuously. therefore, the dealer disconnected it completely. the dealer, who was a ford dealer, recommended taking the vehicle to a mercury dealer for further inspection. the manufacturer has not been contacted. the horn has since been repaired. updated 05/30/06. *ak

The steering bolts came out of my steering wheel while driving my 2005 grand marquis. nothing led up to this situation - there was no warning. had i not been going on a 25 mph 2 lane road this could have been catastrophic. instead, i ended up half way in a ditch blocking the right hand lane of traffic. i was told from my dealership, kingsland ford mercury located on highway 40, per the service manager monty that this was a result of the manufacturer and my car came off the line that way. i have contacted customer service and of course the dealership and there is no recall to my knowledge about these steering bolts. *jb

The vehicle was purchased on january 26 2006 new with lees than 100 miles on it. while at a complete stop in a parking place with my right foot on the brake pedal and hand on gear shift to place the car in park in front of a nursing home. suddenly the car accelerated forward out of control with enough speed in the short distance to go through a wall into a room of the nursing home. luckily the room in the nursing home was unoccupied. i did suffer an injury to the top and right side of my right foot, when i attempted to pull the accelerator up with my right foot and placing my left foot on the brake pedal. the car did not stop accelerating until the impact into the nursing home. the car was towed to the dealership the same day and the owner of the dealership and service personnel was notified of the possible defect. to this date the dealership has not responded to my concerns. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated while exiting the vehicle, the occupants get shocked by static electricity from the door. the dealership suggested fabric softener be sprayed in the vehicle, but this has not remedied the problem. *ak

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle has been to the dealership numerous times because the brakes are defective. when pressure is applied to the brake pedal, the pedal intermittently goes to the floor. most often this occurs while starting the vehicle and placing it in gear. on one occasion a power booster was replaced on the brake system. this did not correct the problem. on another occasion, there was a pedal pressure test performed. the dealership determined the pressure was a little low, but not enough for concern.

This car has a dangerous defect. randomly when in a stationary position, by holding the brakes, the engine and transmission sometimes suddenly accelerates powerfully, making it difficult to hold the car. i notified the dealer about this defect, several times in writing and by phone. dec, 29, 2005 they took it on a drive, and claimed to have found no defect. subsequently, jan, 15, 2006 at approximately 1:00 pm, i was stopped at a red light on grand st. nyc behind an suv, by holding the brakes, all of a sudden it accelerated, and it was impossible to hold the car. it slammed into the suv in front of me, smashing my front. luckily, the suv was not damaged. but even more luckily, we did not get hurt, (i had in the car my wife, an adult daughter, and 2 grand children). in addition, i guess we were extra lucky that we had the suv in front of me, which averted a catastrophic mowing down of pedestrians crossing. the dealers took in the car, and notified me yesterday, jan, 19, 2006, that they ran tests and find nothing wrong with the car. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle was not equipped with quad sun visors. the original sun visors covered only one direction. the manufacturer was informed of the problem. however, the contact purchased additional sun visors to cover both the windshield and the side window at the same time.

Dt: the contact stated while going through an intersection another vehicle ran a stop sign and struck the contact's vehicle on the side. upon impact, the contact's vehicle was knocked into another lane and was hit head on by a third vehicle. this second impact caused the other vehicle to tail spin and was hit in the rear by the first vehicle. the side air bags didn't deploy, but the frontal air bags did. the contact was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. there was extensive damage to the side of the vehicle, the outer column was pushed into the seat, and the dashboard came apart. the contact and passenger sustained injuries. the vehicle was totaled by the insurance company. *ak updated 01/25/06. *jb

Rough engine idle, dealer reps say 'all the new ones do it', 'it's normal'. i've asked them about it on several occasions since purchasing the car. not nearly as good gas mileage as our 2001 grand marquis got, was told by the dealer, "you can't compare cars'. *nm

On three occasions when shifting from park to reverse the engine sped up (accelerated drastically) causing the wheels to spin and only by quick application of the brake was an incident avoided. i drove into a parking space, put the car in park, then not satisfied with the position i attempted to back up, that's when the car accelerated. *jb

Dt: the consumer stated that the accelerator stuck three times. the owner was backing out of the driveway and went to give the car gas and the accelerator stuck. the driver ended up in a ditch. this happened while driving at low speeds at 25 mph. the car is at the dealership to be inspected. the dealer could not identify the cause of the problem. this has not been reported to the manufacturer. a police report was taken. *ak *jb

Dt: when applying brake pedal pressure the pedal goes past the accelerator to the floor, most often this occurs when starting the vehicle and placing it in gear. when this occurs it is easy to hit the gas pedal as well when trying to apply brake pressure. this causes the tires to squeal and the car to lunge forward. has been to a dealer who said he would have a service manager call the consumer about this problem, but he never returned the call. the service representative noted there was nothing wrong. no repairs or changes have been made. *ak

Dt: consumer states the overhead console came down in front of the rear view mirror blocking the top of the mirror. consumer can n' t see properly out of the mirror. he called ford and the dealer to ask if he could adjust the rearview mirror somehow in the down position. both said there was no solution for this. service dept said there had been several complaints about this same problem. *ak *jb

Dt: consumer states that he rented a 2005 mercury grand marquis which he backed into the driveway,and put the vehicle into drive from reverse the vehicle accelerated across street, through a neighbor's lawn and through a hedge into a neighbor's car. there was a police report filed. the investigating officers thought it was a mechanical malfunction. consumer was not cited for this incident. hertz rental had vehicle towed to the service center.*ak

While driving 55 mph vehicle ran over a piece of a tire tread, medium in size. the highway patrol officer informed the consumer that the vehicle was leaking fuel onto the road. the tread caused a puncture in the fuel tank. vehicle was towed to the dealer.*ak *bf

My 2005 mercury grand marquis airbag light is on. dealership claims the airbags will not deploy due to a malfunctioning seatbelt pretensioner. repair/replacement will cost $1800 to do both passenger and driver. car only has 29,250 miles on it. i have found where this seems to be an ongoing problem with this model. also, saw where this issue has caused airbags not to deploy in a collision. some have reported the problem reoccurring after repair. this is a bad design by mercury and a huge safety concern that should have been issued a recall! *js

Started vehicle to move it in my driveway. put it in drive and throttle stuck open and vehicle slammed my garage corner. tried putting it in park and it went into reverse (brake override did not work) instead and crossed street, went across neighbors landscaping stones and slammed into the house next door's front porch at which time the ignition shut down and the car came to a stop. many thousands of dollars in damages to all three homes. *js
