2005 FORD Explorer

We have a 2005 Ford Explorer and the rear back panel cracked by the Ford Symbol. We opened the lift gate one day and the panel broke in half at the crack and the whole back window shattered and injured us. Ford wants to charge me $140.00 just to look at it. Sorry but Ford knows about the cracks in the back panels and won\'t fix my car!

We were leaving our Son\'s game and we opened the liftgate to put things away and when we shut it the window exploded. Glass went everywhere including on the third row where my daughters are getting into their seats. We tried to fix it and as they were putting the hinges on the new window exploded allover my husbands head.

I\'ve had my 2005 Ford Explorer… sense 2008 second owner of the vehicle… everything was going well until I transmission does not go into reverse… it\'s going to cost me almost $3,000 to get it fixed and I don\'t have it can\'t afford it about to lose my job because of this major problem on the Ford Explorers transmission I can\'t even find the transmission in my area to have it put in this is ridiculous

As I was driving on the interstate at 3am eastern standard time on my way home from work going 70mph the truck sounded like the entire bottom fell out. I was able to pull to the right side of the road, check the truck out , seen nothing wrong on the exterior of the vehicle. I got back in the truck to pull off to go home , while putting the truck in drive it took a minute then it felt like the truck jumped. I was able to put it in first gear then back in drive and was able to drive away. Now , the truck will not switch gears. I can get up to 10mph and it does not switch out of first gear. There has been so many complaints about this situation.

The right rear window hinge rotated out of position and fractured, causing my rear window to explode while driving. The hydraulic arms then extended when the glass was gone, bending the frame of the tailgate, cracking the plastic, and exposing wires. The shattered glass exploded onto two infant car seats in the back seat.

Cracked/separation of rear lift-gate applique. The problem seems to be seamed up against the seal of the rear window. Refer to Ford TSB 05-24-2. This seems to be a universal problem.

While driving down the road yesterday10-22-15 the back glass shattered and took the support frame with it..

Transmission grinds when going from 2 to 3 gear

Paint started peeling off the roof approximately when the vehicle was around 4 years old and now in 2015 paint has bubbled and peeled off in multiple areas like the quarter panels, rocker panels, back doors, lift gate etc.
Approximately in July 2015 my liftgate windshield wiper stopped working

Vehicle has hard time accelerating. When vehicle accelerate a loud “cluck” sound can be heard. Failure to accelerate at times. O/D light on, and Check Transmission message on.

Took the car to local ford dealer for 100k mile service in Nov 2014 with no past problems. Then in Jan 2015 we had no warm air coming out of front vents. Had to have Heater core replaced. Then in March 2015 transmission began to slip when in reverse. Dealer said we needed new transmission. $3500 for remanufactured transmission.

Just ANOTHER very annoyed Ford Explorer customer with a cracked rear panel. Every Ford Explorer from 2002 – 2005 on the road has a cracked rear panel, and it is absolutely ridiculous that Ford never issued a recall on that defect. Most recalls actually affect very few vehicles and is purely precautionary…this defect occurs in nearly 100% of every Explorer!

I have not fixed the liftgate yet, I was researching repair options and discovered the liftgate crack is a known defect that Ford has not taken care of responsibly

My 2005 Ford Explorer has paint bubbling all over the vehicle. I have called Ford numerous times about this, they have denied knowing anything about this problem at all. They refuse to help me. I have read on the internet that there are many people experiencing this very same problem and have received no help at all. Ford has issued a service bulletin about this problem but yet they refuse to replace any paint on my car. In the spots of the bubbling paint it is starting to rust from the peeled paint. I have taken it over to a local collison body shop and they wont repaint it because they are aware of the problem and they cannot guarantee their paint job because of the defect.

I have a ford explorer 2005 4dr xlt MVP 4×4. When I bought my ford explorer In 2004 and the dealer explain me that the warranty of my car was covered to 70,000 miles.. In 2010, the transmission of my car Start having mechanic problems then I took my car to the dealer becauses my car has only 36,000 milles, less miles from the warranty and they told me that the warranty of this is no more covered.

Complete transmission failure. Little to no warning signs until the car wouldn’t go into reverse. Ridiculous a transmission would only last less than 100k miles. Time to stop purchasing American made cars…how unfortunate.

At 62,000 miles the transmission and the throttle body failed on my 2005 ford explorer. After much investigation on the Internet, it seems that ford put faulty transmissions in explorers from 2002 to 2005. They took NO responsibility for this and the repairs costed me $3300. They tried to charge me $4300 but I flat refused to pay that.

The transmission made loud clunking noise when shifting form Park to Drive or Reverse. Transmission slipped and caused a delay between pressing the accelerator and actually moving the vehicle.

PAINT IS BISTERING ON FRONT EDGES OF HOOD. This is the only place on the whole 2005 Explorer

The rear panel has a vertical crack covering the entire panel. This apparently is due to the wiper mechanism behind it, I have seen dozens of similar Explorers and Mercury Mountaineer’s (same body style) with the exact same problem. I got an estimate yesterday from my local Ford dealership, for $472. This is ridiculous. At one point Ford was paying for all but $100 of the cost to repair this problem, but now they are not offering that option at all. This should be recalled because it is obviously a manufacturer’s problem and could cause major harm to the user of the vehicle.

Idler pulley and AC pulley were replaced and the squeal is still there.
Rear differential is going out. Fluid analysis reports it has water, dirt, is high in iron indicating gear, shaft, or spline wear and bearing wear.Will explain what Ford says and the dealerships are saying.

CRACK IN THE REAR HATCH PANEL CAUSED BY A DEFECT IN THE DESIGN

On Dec 4,2010 I went to open the back of my truck only to find a crack on the right side of the emblem that started from the bottom of the window to the end of the panel which I didn’t realize was plastic. From doing research on the internet I have found over 6,000 complaints about the same thing and Ford has said the same thing to them as they did to me. Take your vehicle to the dealer and see what they offer. The dealer will fix ii but I have to pay for it, Ford takes no responsibility although they are aware of the defect. I feel they should take responsibily and fix this problem since it happens for no reason on the owners part.

I am in the military and just returned from deployment and noticed my 2005 Explorer, which was setting in my garage, has a crack in the rear panel. Dealer says there is a defect but not covered. Internet says lots and lots of people have the same issue. what gives? Im going to Toyota, I guess, unless it is covered for a defect. I have been a FORD customer since I was 16 and am 39 now, but lately, noticed FORDs are falling apart. $500 bucks for something I didnt do…not good FORD.

After coming back from a vacation to the airport to get my car, I noticed the tailgate of my Blue 2005 Explorer XLT was cracked all the way through with a 8" long crack from the bottom of the glass to the bottom of the tailgate. After a brief internet search, it turns out that this is a WIDESPREAD problem that Ford knows about, which they refuse to do anything about. I even have a Ford full-extended warranty that covers everything and they STILL refuse to do anything. The repair will be $400-$500, which I am NOT going to pay for. It’s a Ford design flaw, they knew it back in 2002, yet continued to produce Explorers with the same defect for three or more years.

While driving a coastal highway, the car\’s engine (without warning) shut off. I pulled over-this was very difficult to do on a windy road with no power steering and brakes-and let the car sit. I checked all fluids and everything was fine. I restarted the car after a few minutes and it was a rocky ride home. During the ride the \"Engine Fail Safe Mode\" light came on. It is now in my garage dead and ready to be taken to the garage by tow truck. This is the 3rd time the car has done this and the 1st time I am reporting it due to the fact that the car is completely dead. This last time the situation was quite harrowing and I am in fear of driving this car again. Any suggestions? To me, the risk of death was extreme.

When we first drove the car it had a vibration in the steering, it shook your hands, this is not a small vibration. I told the dealer and he said it needed an alignment. I left the car with them and picked it up the same night. They stated that they did not have time to do the alignment but to bring it back on Monday. I drove the car home and took it back on Monday. They had the car all day, it did not fix the problem. Took it back a week later, still did not fix the problem. I have had the car in the shop almost more than I have had the car at home. Each time I take it in and they say its fixed it takes them 1-3 days and eventually they say ” I don’t feel anything” or “Its normal driving experience”. I told the dealer that I was not happy with the vehicle and that is not what I thought I was buying. If I knew that all Explorer drove that way I would have bought a different type of vehicle. NOT A FORD. I have sat down with the service manager and the general manager of the dealership and have gotten NO help. They let me drive another 05 Explorer, in June, and that vehicle drove worse than mine ever did. it shook so bad that the general manager that was in the car with me was shocked. If this is the way all Ford Explorers drive why don’t they tell the consumers. I feel that the vibration is getting worse and that eventually will become a safty hazard. I have a 5 month old baby and do not want the car any longer due to this. I want to get Ford to buy the car back. The dealer says they tried to get Ford to qualify my car for this but they got turned down. They have replaced the rack and pinion, done numerous alignments,changed out the type of tires twice, and who knows what else trying to fix my car. Everytime I take it in they say they will drive it and try to make it better and in the same breath tell me its “me”, that there is nothing wrong with the car. Its strange how my best friends SUV doesn’t drive that way, my husband truck doesn’t drive that way and my mothers Ford Explorer 1998 model doesn’t drive that way. If what they is correct that ALL Explorers drive that way, why do they try to fix it everytime I take it in. And why doesn’t Ford tell everyone that the steering on all Explorers will shake your arm off. After all its considered NORMAL.

We have the “Heated” leather Eddie Buaer seats. They are so uncomfortable, on a drive 30 minutes or more, that you can hardly keep your mind on your driving. If feels like your setting on rocks. After a time your legs start to “Go to Sleep”. Ford says “nothing wrong”. This has got to be a design problem and should be recalled before causing people nerve damage in there legs.

Vehicle keeps stalling out, engine quits running acting like the vehicle ran out of fuel. It has been in the shop three times for this problem and could not be duplicated by the dealership. Also, the dealership kept a \"OPEN\" work order on this vehicle at the second failure point making it appear the vehicle was only in the shop twice, but we do have invoices with the same number and mileage on it but with a different stamped time on them clearly showing these are not the same documents but appearing so. The third time it was in the service writer \"Nick Persson\" witnessed the shutting of the engine (running rough) but it did not die out. Twice it was towed in and once it re-started and I drove the vehicle to the selling dealer. This vehicle has a FLEX FUEL ENGINE and this was a major factor in purchasing this vehicle. We were told not to run E-85 fuel in the vehicle and to use regular unleaded 87 octane. We were told by the service department they did not know enough about the Flex Fuel engines. We were also told by the service department that Ford has not issued any bulletins or concerns on this problem. This vehicle has left the dealership service department three times now without the problem being explained or corrected. We (my wife) has lost confidence in driving this vehicle because of the possibility of being stranded on the roadway again. It also should be noted that my wife is handicapped and has limited walking capabilities. She was also instructed by the by the service manager \"Mike\" not to call Ford Roadside Assistance if the vehicle should stall again and to call him directly. We feel the dealership is trying to mask the failure rate and hide the fact they cannot remedy the problem with the vehicle. The third time the dealership kept the vehicle for eight days and drove it for over forty miles but unfortunately the problem did not return.

Still trying to get this paid for. Top of SUV paint is peeling and chipping down to the basecoat. It is only barely out of warranty and appears to have been happening for some time. Only noticed when climbing up to check on top of tailgate for other matter.

Paint on roof & liftgate peeling off vehicle – obviously for some time as there was a lot missing from the roof & there is visible rusting on the roof. First noticed when it started peeling from the liftgate which caused me to look up on the roof where I otherwise have no reason to look. Ford stated that as it was out of the 3/36K warrantee period they would do nothing – despite this being a well documented issue & something known about by several Ford / Chrysler dealers I spoke with.

Paint is the current problem with my Explorer – it is peeling and flaking on the roof of my vehicle. Dealership is unwilling to pay even though there is a TSB on it and Ford knows it is a manufacturers defect. Please Help

my trans went out in june of 2010 and can’t get it fixed it will cost $2,000. The whole inner workings is shot and I don’t have the money to fix it

My 2005 Explorer is showing paint blistering on the front of the hood, and I understand that Ford had issued a Technical Service Bulletin that addresses that particular problem. Apparently, the hood is made of aluminum and, due to contamination by iron particles, the aluminum hood has started to corrode, causing the paint to blister. Estimated repair costs to my vehicle are nearly $800.00 and I think Ford should be responsible. Thank You

Back panel under rear window cracked. If this falls off while I am driving down the road, how would the person behind me avoid an accident when it falls into their path. This could be a potentially deadly situation and Ford is doing nothing to fix it. I would look into having it fixed but I have no choice. This is a work vehicle and I have no say on the maintenance performed on the vehicle.

 My 2005 Ford Explorer has the paint peeling off the roof and rear hatch. When i took it in for repair to Ford they told me that the warranty (even the extended warranty) did not cover paint. They informed me to contact Ford Customer Care (800-392-3673), when I did call them they took all my info and then asked me to bring the car back to my dealer to get a estimate for re-painting. A few days later the dealer called and said Ford was not willing to help in repainting the vehicle, but that the dealer would help (since I was loyal customer) pay for the repainting, but only 25% of the total cost. i declined their help and told them this was a Ford issue and not their fault. I have since filed a claim in Small Claims Court and awaiting the hearing scheduled for June 10, 2010.

2005 ford explorer. consumer states problems with air conditioner *tgw the consumer was a quoted a price of $2,400 to fix the air conditioner. the consumer stated the air conditioner failed for the second time within 16 months. according to the invoice, the ac compressor had a large hole on the side of the case. the consumer believed the original design of the air conditioner was defective. *jb

2005 ford explorer transmission issues. very common on this model, based on customer/car owners complaints. reverse is affected. could not reverse quickly, almost hit by oncoming car. very dangerous. i have children!!!!

The gear shifter/lever broke off into my hand when attempting to shift from park to reverse. the gear shifter/lever broke at the base, inside the steering column. the broken part seems to be a cast metal part, that the gear shifter/lever rotates to change gears. the fracture surface appears rough -- it is not clean. fortunately the car is stuck in park, not another gear, and in a safe place (parking garage). should this have happened when in any other gear i would have to turn off the car in that gear, if i had enough room to maneuver the car to a safe place. otherwise it would just have to sit wherever it was left, no matter how inconvenient to other drivers. i called ford and they state this is not a documented issue, therefore no recall or reimbursement is available. however, an internet search reveals this is has happened to many people, with pictures of the same exact break point that i have experienced. also, there are after-market replacement parts for this exact part, further hinting this is a known problem.

Vehicle engine while traveling, generally at high rates of speed greater than 40mph, will randomly turn off. there are no warning lights, no indication on the instrument panel. the engine just turns off. the only way of knowing is once the gas pedal is depressed to increase speed and then realized the car had turned off. this is happening more frequently. i had to by a new car. explorer just sits in the driveway. this happen randomly with no notice and generally while traveling at speeds above 40 mph

When trying to fill the gas tank it is slow and will not fill properly. had 3 different mechanics try to fix the problem with no resolve.

Transmission just failed on the highway. no forward or reverse gears. the occurrence of transmission failures for this vehicle is extremely high and well documented. the transmission on this vehicle is unreliable and unsafe because of poor engineering. my family was luck to not get rear ended on the highway resulting in injury or worse.

While stopped at a red light on a residential street, the rear window exploded. it appears the right rear window hinge had rotated out of position and fractured, causing the window to break. the hydraulic arms extended since the window was no longer there to hold them back, which caused the lift gate frame to bend, plastic to crack, and electrical wires to be exposed.

Several times over the past two years while driving at high speeds all the electrical turns off like the key is turned off. it is almost impossible to steer as there is no power steering. it almost caused an accident as the car slowed quickly. i am concerned as this has been reported several times and nothing has been done to solve this issue. either ford should fix the issue or pull this car out of service before somebody is killed.

Metal seat frame bar coming through outside of drivers seat.. i am 5' 3" tall, 125 lbs...not from over weight driver.. very prominent metal bar makes seat almost impossible to sit on. lumbar support didnt last 5 years...seat dangerous to anyone sitting on it.

About 7 months ago i started having an issue while driving on a city street, that shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear it would rev and hesitate and when it does it to many times while driving the check transmission message appears on the display and also the o/d light blinks and my truck will act funny until i shut it off. this has been an ongoing issue and when i took it to my mechanic it is giving them several different error codes and they are not willing to try all 6 codes to figure it out. since it is a closed transmission case that has no drain plug and no dip stick to check the fluid they really don't want to mess with it and cost me a ton of money to figure it out. i have 106,000 miles on it currently and hope you give me a more pinpoint resolution so i can decide if i should get it repaired and what more specifically they can try.

From park, delay from 1 to 7 seconds for engagement for reverse (automatic trans), worse in warm weather. serious safety issue, as you may press on gas thinking you're in reverse, and then accelerate!! heard 1st hand from ford dealer this is well known, and sometimes severe. something with solenoid pack? happens often!

Abs light and advance tracking light and 4x4 light and car with tracking light all comes on and the braking jerk when stopping. also low oil pressure light comes on even after oil change

Rear wheel well shock tower mount is rusted out. there is no reason this should be happening. this is a major safety issue.

Takata recall. fuel gauge stopped working changed the fuel pump in the tank 2 times still did not work. checked for ground connections all seemed well. the fuel gauge still does not work

2005 ford explorer. frame is rotting along the welds. not up and down. length wise running with the frame. obviously a factory weld issue and a big issue at that as the issue could have the frame fail and entire hub/axle/wheel assembly rip right off the vehicle. this is also a very common issue with ford's in general from 02-2005. as you already know i'm sure. this vehicle was well maintained and taken care of and the frame issue has made an otherwise great running low mileage vehicle worthless. not to mention had the issue not been found very dangerous! please get these death traps off the road!! have pictures but the files are to large to send. thanks.

I was backing up from my driveway and my car accelerated when put into reverse and it peeled out and had to hit the brakes really hard.sometimes the engine shakes when going forward for a few seconds then it goes away.

When using the cruise control and the 2005 ford explorer is going down hill or when pressing coast button, the 2005 ford explorer stall, engine cuts out. steering and braking becomes difficult.

Need to recall the gasket heads. there are hundreds of complaints of the same issue. little holes melted on the head. overheating vehicle and smoking out antifreeze while driving. why it's this material plastic?

1) abs, brake, and wrench failure lights flashed on for about 3 seconds and turned off when decelerating with cruise control from 55 mph to 45 mph zones at courland, va. vehicle manual provides no guidance on this failure mode; only “warning lights turn on and continue flashing, reduce speed and take vehicle to nearest service provider” and “warning lights turn on and stay on, stop driving immediately and have vehicle towed to nearest service provider.” 2) approximately ten minutes later, driver began applying brakes to disengage cruise control and slow from 60 mph to 35 mph school zone speed about 50 to 60 m before school zone warning sign at capron elementary, va, on state highway 58. 3) driver checked speed upon entering school zone and found cruise control light still on and vehicle still traveling at 60 mph. depressed brake approximately 1/3 total braking range (4 cm), which should have locked the brakes and brought the vehicle to a full stop. no effect. cruise control light remained on and vehicle continued at 60 mph. 4) at this point, driver realized that he had no control of the vehicle, panicked, and decided he had to stop or crash the vehicle. driver jammed the brake petal as hard as he could and held. it took probably 3 seconds for the rear brakes to finally go up a logistic growth resistance curve, grab, and stop the vehicle. no braking by front wheels. abs did not work. contributing physical defects: worn-out front brakes, even though vehicle was kept under rigorous maintenance and had valid virginia state inspection sticker. warped front brake rotors most likely induced intermittent false signals to computer control center causing cruise control to fail to disengage.

Something wrong with the tire pressure the light stays on in the message board and a message with the brake system also stays on and it stalls while im in motion on the hwy and streets and takes awhile to move foward again. i

Driving on the interstate at about 70 mph, sunroof was tilted in vent position when my sunroof exploded. glass reigned down on me. i thought something had smashed through, but i could not find anything. looks like it actually blew outward in the center. it's possible something hit it, but i did not see anything. it just was a loud "explosion" and that was it.

My explorer transmission just stopped working going down the highway, almost got hit by a truck. electrical system kept going in and out. checked with a ford dealership they said it was a common problem with explorers and there was no recall. i checked online and there was over 10,000 complaints made. i am in the military have 14 combat tours, and come home to have my life put in danger again on something that you all know about. when are you going to step in?

While using cruise control, when the vehicle decelerate going down hill the engine stalls all warning light comes on and engines dies. this happen all the time when i or wife are drive with our family

Brake lights do not work. rear turn signals do not work. it is not the fuse because the rear back up lights work and the high center brake light works and the rear lights turn on when i turn on the headlights. just when i press the brakes and turn signals (rear) do not work. researching online, lots off people have problems with the multifunction switch being the culprit.

While driving down the interstate at night my vehicles dashboard began to act erratic. then the battery gauge rapidly dropped into the red zone. within about 3 miles i lost my interior power, headlights, taillights, and signals including my hazard lights. when limping off the interstate my truck had lost enough power to where it died out. once at the dealership it was found that the alternator fried out causing a surge that wiped out the pcm and utility cluster all without warning.

We have a 2005 ford explorer and the back lift gate panel was cracked right by the ford symbol. when we went to open the back lift gate and the panel where it was cracked broke in half and shattered the whole back window and injured us. ford wants to charge me $140.00 to just look at it. come on ford do what's right! beware if you have a cracked panel on your ford! it can break in half and the glass can shatter.

The back lift gate panel cracked on the back of our ford explorer and when we went to shut the lift gate the whole back window shattered. ford won't replace it because they say its not a safety issue and our year of our ford was not apart of the recall of these panels being cracked. please be aware that if you have one of these cracks that the back window can shatter when closing the lift gate.

Fuel gauge drops to empty after filling the tank up and starting it. the fuel gauge remains on empty. service engine light comes on and stays on. it is unsafe not knowing how much fuel is in the tank because you could run out of gas at 70+mph and cause a crash. searching the issue online brought me to hundreds of 2002-05 ford explorer owners with the same exact problem. ford motors should put out a recall for this issue because it is extremely dangerous.

My gauges go haywire the needles shake while driving and when car is off no key in ignition. the lights flash as well. car will stall in traffic at a stop, the rpm won't go above 2 even when hwy going 60 mph. mechanic said it's electrical, the dealer took out top counsel as a work around for this electrical issue claiming it was not a recall.

We've replaced the fuel sensor in our 2005 ford explorer xlt twice in the past two years. we had 68,000 miles when we first replaced the fuel sensor. it is a costly fix. now, august 2017, the fuel sensor is not working and our service engine soon light is on. this is a safety issue because we never know how much gas we have in the tank. the gas goes up and down and is not reliable. the computer never states the correct number of miles till emply. i'll be driving along and the gauge goes down to empty and the computer states -------.

There are two cracks on the back top lift gate which allows water to get to the electric locks and it opens by itself when wet. the wheels bearings have to be replaced about every 3 months. the passenger front belt tightens and will not loosen.

Car stalled while driving at highway speeds. brakes and steering became impaired. lucky, i was in the rightmost lane and was able to narrowly avoid collision. incident occurred after a ~3hr drive as i was exiting the highway (i.e. slowing down). upon restart, engine turned over, but was undriveable due to iterative surge/stall cycles.

Defective throttle body assemblies and sensors. randomly engine goes into fail safe mode and has stalled while driving, at traffic lights, and during turns. instrument panel is now going haywire. message center reports low oil pressure, check charging systems, tire sensor failure fault, change oil soon, and oil is fine. battery has been checked. tire sensors, alternator...all fine. it's all i have and i must drive it to work each day! bought used in november 2013. had 69k miles at purchase. now has 103k miles. it doesn't feel safe :o( please help!

I parked in my driveway, returning from the supermarket in the 2005 explorer in a 90 degree day. i opened the top of my lift gate and stuck my head in to grab my bags when the right hinge attached to the rear window dehisced and the lift gate came down on the back of my head. the torque was too much for the left hinge and it bent , shattering the glass of the rear window all over and breaking the bottom door frame in 1/2. the vehicle is not drivable as what is left is hanging by thin hydraulic attachment and could drop at any moment.

The vehicle shuts off while driving causing loss of power steering, power brakes with a complete loss of power. this is an ongoing problem and has happend during highway high speed driving. it happens on cars built 11/24/04 and prior. the codes are p2106 and p2135. it's caused by a faulty throttle position sensor and requires a powertrain control module reset b36.11, b37.2 or higher. this has been an ongoing problem thar ford readily ackowledges. they have ugraded the throttle position sensor twice without solving the problem.

Walked out to my garage and noticed a cracked had showed up overnight. it goes from the back eindow, by the right edge of the ford logo, to the bottom of the lift gate. it is almost perfectly vertical, i have seen a ton of these on xlts. i thought i was lucky, i was wrong.

In nov of 2014 we took the car to the local ford dealer for 100k mile service. we told them to check the drive train because when you put the car in reverse there would be a slight hesitation then a clunk then the car would begin to move. they said there was no issue and they installed a computer upgrade to improve the shifting. they also changed the tranny fluid. then in march of 2015 when you put the car in reverse the transmission began slipping and got worse in a couple of days. we took it to the local dealer again and they took 2 weeks to figure out the transmission needed replaced. they said $3500 for a remanufactured transmission and i would have to pay for all of it. *tr

Filled tank to full (automatic shut off). when i started car the next time, gas gauge read empty and check engine light was on. i have had the malfunction of gauge before and has always come back after a few miles, but never light. after getting error light read, it is determined to be a faulty fuel sensor. this can be a safety hazard as there is no way for the vehicle to display the fuel correctly when the sensor malfunctions. i make sure not to overfill the tank as ford warns that this could be an issue, which should have been fixed (not just that they know it can happen). even by following the manufacturer's precautions, the part still failed. *tr

Fuel gauge is working intermittent. tank is fill up with gas, but gas gauge show empty. sometimes it comeback, after an hour or so and then, after 30 mins goes back to empty again. i read this is an issue on almost all ford explorer. *tr

The rear lift gate trim panel split vertically from the glass to the bottom of the lift gate. the crack runs adjacent to the ford emblem on the lift gate. i see a lot of this occurring on similar year models and consider that this is a design defect that should be addressed. *tr

Hello while driving down the highway, the upper ball joint in the drivers side front broke and caused damage to the axle, tire, and wheel. this caused issues with control of vehicle and could have cause a much greater accident than what occurred. i was able to avoid a major accident, partially due to the low speed at the time, however had this occurred while i was on the interstate or on a crowded highway, this could have had exponentially worse outcomes. i have been told by numerous mechanics that the ball joints are an issue for ford explorers and this isn't my first issue with them myself. i also had issues with my 2004 explorer. this was not an original part to the vehicle and was checked less than a week before it broke and passed inspection. please look into ball joint issues for ford explorers and keep something like this from happening again. a picture of the vehicle is below. please contact me for more information if needed. http://oi59.tinypic.com/t658xd.jpg. *tr

Took my suv to bodyshop yesterday i noticed the roof top exterior was peeling paint and rusting. it will lead to leaking problems if not repaired but owner of shop says that there is no way of them being able to seal it permanantly it is a matter of how long new paint will last . to have it repaired is very costly but if not will do further damage. *tr

The plastic bracket that holds up the overhead control console between the drive and passenger and right next to the rear view mirror broke and the entire console fell while the car was off and parked with no one in the car. the console dropped and blocked the rear view mirror. had i been driving it would have been a shock and caused me not to use my rear view mirror. when i went to remove the bracket to get a replacement i found it was super brittle and falling apart. it broke into a few pieces while just holding it. it clearly was not structurally sound. if this interior and hidden plastic part that was not subject to any passenger interaction or sun exposure is disintegrating what about other parts of the car. i see lots of plastic parts failure complaints for ford explorer. is the plastic they used defective or are car parts like this bracket in ford products supposed to self destruct?

Rear widow is also a hatch. the hatch has a fracture in the center of where the hatch secures itself to the frame. the hatch will not close properly and needs to be physically manipulated at an angle to be secured. *tr

Electric windows won't work. all fuses are working. some wires that go from the vehicle frame to the drivers side door are severed and melted. the wires are in a protective rubber boot that is between vehicle frame and door. *tr

I have a 2005 explorer xlt and i also have a large crack down the panel below the back window. which has led to water seeping into my back wiper motor causing me to replace it frequently. which replacing this is not cheap.this is certainly an issue that needs to be addressed due to there are many of the exact same complaints. also the brackets that hold on my back window came off/broke. we were leaving for vacation and the whole window was in my hand when i went to close it. i am a ford lover through and through and would just like these problems that numerous people are having corrected . thank you for your time! *tr

I am another very annoyed owner of a 2002-2005 ford explorer with a cracked rear panel. from what i can tell, this affects nearly 100% of all explorers of those model years and it is ridiculous that ford has not issued a recall notice for this defect. *tr

I went out to my 2005 ford eddie bauer explorer to remove items inside back cargo area and noticed that the plastic tailgate panel below the rear window had vertically cracked all the way down and through the whole piece. there was no physical evidence to show cause for the spontaneous wide crack. the car has been well cared for. parked daily in garage and not even driven daily. i am extremely concerned that the glass window panel might be compromised and could cause deadly damage to passengers in my car or others on the road behind me should it come loose or shatter, including the chance that the back windshield wiper could come unattached and also fly off into the window of a vehicle behind me. i have just researched this problem and have found hundreds of other owners who have had the same spontaneous cracking and have filed complaints. something must be done. this is an extreme safety issue. *tr

Because of the recent gm recall ignition issue, i thought i should let someone know about the serious similar issue i had 3 times before i traded my car in. the car would just shut off while driving. and all 3 times, i pulled to the side of the road and restarted the car and continued on my way. i was lucky to have a place to pull over safely. i took it to my mechanic twice, found nothing wrong. took it to ford and they found nothing wrong. i traded the 2005 for a 2011. i also told the dealer that i traded it into about the engine just shutting off for no reason and to check out the problem before they sold it again. *tr

As i was driving in traffic, the panel suddenly started beeping and flashing lights and my car would not change gears. the o/d light came on and the information center indicated there was something wrong with my transmission. now the car will not shift into 3rd gear until it reaches very high rpm and when it does shift it is very hard. i drive the car to and from work a total of 6 miles a day and almost never on the highway. it is almost 10 years old and it only has 70,000 miles. i've heard this has been a problem with ford transmissions for over 10 years but they refuse to take responsibility for the defect. i have been buying ford cars since 1995 but this will be my last. too many other problems that they refuse to fix. *tr

Ford explorer eddie bauer - garage kept, low miles due to working from home. discovered a crack in the back hatch upper panel. when reported to insurance company (progressive) the agent indicated that this is a known defect and all ford dealers are aware of it. i discovered other ford explorers and expeditions around the county with the same crack. crack is caused by lack of stabilization behind the panel and the crack appears due to regular closing of the back hatch. starts with a single crack (can lead to multiple cracks). the crack allows water to enter the back hatch area causing rust and disabling or limiting the back window wiper. i wrote a letter to ford and emailed them regarding this manufacturing defect and was told that this is not something they take care of. cost to repair can run anywhere from $275 to $1,000, depending upon the severity. we have started a facebook page for those of us around the country that have experienced the same problem and our number is growing every day. problem seems to be 2002 thru 2006 ford explorers and expeditions. ford has changed the manufacturing for the years following. *tr

There's an obvious defect in the 2005 ford explorer, the 7 ¼ x 55 ½ panel, the one with the ford logo in it. it cracks. it did it twice on ours, we replaced it once costing us $500. our repairman said he's seen this exact problem on many ford'. we looked into it, and numerous other experts agree on the defect. the first time we tried to bring attention to ford for this problem, they blew us off, not even having the courtesy to get our letter to the person it was addressed. as human nature, ford tried to manipulate the problem, at the end of the conversation actually convincing themselves and trying to convince me that there was no problem. we like to keep all our stuff nice but currently our vehicle doesn?t look nice. we cannot afford to throw away our money on a defective product. again, it is defective, anyone related to the vehicle industry and bodywork, with any sense, can realize the problem. on our first attempt to propose ford?s resolution of this problem we didn?t draw attention to the problem. this time we?re ready to go at it in full force (attorney general, bbb, local & national news outlets, and the federal trade commission) if ford doesn?t find a fair way to compensate us. the issue being the first panel being defective and cracked allowing us to drive around in a junky looking vehicle; replacing the product for $500 which still had the issue and once again we?re driving around with a junky looking vehicle; resale value has been compromised. thank you for your thoughtful consideration in hopefully resolving this issue. *tr

Car suddenly quit and the engine fail safe light came on. computer scan showed the throttle actuator/control was stuck closed, and could clear any codes. vehicle would not move at all.. i had to have it towed back to my home. engine would not run at more than an idle with the accelerator fully depressed, and there would be no change in the rpm. *tr

"check engine" light came up, but the car did not show any difference in performance. i took to advanced auto and they said the "gas tank sensor failed". i checked with a local mechanic and he said it would be major job and could take more than 6 hours labor the estimate was over $1000. but the car is running fine, but the "check engine " is on constantly and it goes off when the tank is almost empty. when i put gas, it come back on again and stays on. gas tank needle drops to empty suddenly and it goes up again. i checked with midas auto repair and they checked and said the same problem of gas sensor failure. it is annoying to see the check engine light always on, but the car seems to run fine. any cheaper way to get this fixed? i don't have any mechanical skills, other than changing the air-filer. i think ford should fix this free of charge. *tr

My vehicle was parked. i went out in the morning to take my children to school. i noticed a large vertical crack in the lift gate panel to the right of the ford emblem. it had not been driven. this happened overnight while my vehicle was parked. i did some research to find that this is a common problem with this year/model. *tr

Went to load stuff into the back and noticed a spider crack on the plastic panel right below the rear glass panel. i have no idea how it got there but this seems to be reported by almost all 05 explorer owners and it needs to be replaced under ford's liability since it is such a common issue and not just a small amount of vehicles occurring this problem. *tr

The engine had been behaving strange. there was a "tinking" sound, like when you hit metal against metal, and the engine would slip out of gear when under speed control. the vehicle was driven the night before with no problems. the next morning it tried to turn over but couldn't start. the local ford dealership says the sprocket jack shaft broke, controls cam broke, there were bent valves, lifters were hit with the jack shaft and cams were hit too. the engine hydro-locked, ruining the top of the engine. i called the national ford complaint center. ford said it would not offer any financial assistance for putting in a new motor. *tr

Parked and went into grocery store. came out going to where i had parked. as i walked up to the back of my vehicle i noticed a vertical crack in the panel under the rear window. at first i thought i was at the wrong vehicle because i knew my 2005 explorer was not cracked. upon further examination,i realized this was my vehicle. i have seen another explorer around town with a vertical crack in the same spot. seems to me this just might be a design problem. believe ford motor should repair at no cost. *tr *js

My car was parked in a small lot at work. when going out to load some items in the cargo area, a friend noted the vertical crack in the lift gate. it is to the left of the ford emblem and i have since seen numerous identical cracks on other vehicles. there was no collision that cause this, there are no scratches or dents. it is a manufacturer defect. *tr

We purchased a brand new 2005 ford explorer and have kept the maintenance on it. when the temperature control is turned to the warm/hot (red) position or the a/c unit is turned on, we noticed a thumping noise over the years. within the last couple months, the thumping sound has become progressively stronger (as if someone was physically punching through my dashboard/glove compartment), causing my heating/cooling system to be inoperable. a recall needs to be issued to repair the heating/cooling system as a manufacturer defect and should not be the responsibility of the owner to fix. there have been several complaints that have been filed online along with complaints from other ford owners that we know. *tr

There is a defect in the fuel gauge indicator. it will randomly drop from the true fuel level to zero fuel. after some variable time period it will again go from zero fuel to that actual fuel level. this is a safety hazard because it confuses the driver as to how much fuel there is in the fuel tank and may cause the driver to stop the car in an unsafe location. i have had this car for seven years and it has persisted all these years. i checked the web and other ford explorer owners have the same complaint. i believe that ford should recall these cars and fix this safety hazard. *tr

Vehicle started skipping and lunging as it changed gears. took to ford dealer and said it needed to be replaced. costs up to 3,000. ford did all service on vehicle at all the right times. no recall can not believe it. finally took to transmedic had replaced for $2300. can't someone get ford to do anything. *js

Complete transmission failure at 99k miles and cost to completely rebuild is $2400. car has been maintained according to ford recommendations. transmission repair indicated this is a common issue with these transmissions used in ford explorers during these years. ford should perform a recall as this could cause accidents given the lack of warning before failure occurs. *tr

Transmission failure - driving home and the transmission failed. no drive, no reverse, does not go. i purchased this vehicle brand new and have had all of the recommended services performed by my local authorized ford dealer. after it failed, i searched the web for complaints, i should have done this before buying it. not very happy about the fact that ford is not doing anything for this very common failure!! i will warn all potential buyers of any ford products. *tr

Large cracks developed on tne tailgate on both sides of the ford sign in the panel below the rear window. the cracks continue to get larger and i am concerned that a piece of the panel could come loose and cause a following motorist to have an accident. i am aware that ford has received thousands of complaints regarding this issue which is obviously a design flaw and should be held accountable for the repair. *tr

While sitting in my driveway in a parked position, the upper tailgate panel, directly to the right and running right next to the oval ford emblem, a 1/4" wide crack that runs vertically on the back panel appeared. this upper panel of the tailgate also opens up just the window part of the tailgate. the tailgate on this explorer can open up two ways. one way being the entire tailgate is lifted so that it is open like for a dog to jump in and is then level with the interior back part (with the seats down), and it also opens up with just the window part which is where the crack is. this crack is so wide that it allows moisture, snow, water, rain, salt, etc. to seep into the components which house the electrical and tail light, stop lamps and turn signals. it also compromises the body structure and safety features. there are thousands of complaints of this happening as i did a google search. this is clearly a defect in manufacturing and/or parts or components and because of the large number of complaints, the manufacturer should issue a recall notice. at the time of this occurrence, my back tailgate was facing west with the sun shining on it. could it have something to do with the components shrinking and expanding? i have pictures of this issue that i can e-mail to you. updated 9/13/12 *cn updated 09/20/12

After filling up my tank, the fuel gauge dropped to empty, and the check engine soon light came on. also the system that tells me how many miles to empty only shows dashed instead of an actual number. i have looked online and this seems to be a common and pricey problem. the day after i filled up, it jumped to half a tank and then back to empty. this is very unsafe and i don't know if this will cause other problems. i have only had the truck 3 months. *tr

Brought the car to the dealer for the transmission lurching. my wife was parking her car and when she shifted in reverse to back into her parking spot, it lunged backwards and rammed the exhaust into bumper, literally crumpling the exhaust, into a concrete barricade, with no warning. this was at 75000 miles in march of 2009. anytime she put it in gear it would just jump, like something would make it hesitate, and then all of the sudden full power almost uncontrollably. brought to ford dealer and instead of replacing they had rebuilt it. the case for the transmission was cracked, the first sign it needed a new one. fast forward january 20th 2012. now the transmission failed on me, and with no warning with cars coming from behind me, it now has 40000 on the rebuild so now the car has 109000+ miles on it. now the transmission has aluminum filings inside of it from the parts inside coming loose and shredding the case on the inside. for will not take care of it and it should still have a warranty. it is a dangerous car, if she would have drove to work and it lost power on a busier interstate she would have been in a major wreck. i can't replace a loved one because ford will not remedy the problem. i am getting rid of it so that my wife and kids are safe. *tt

The gears in the powered brake/gas pedal assembly seem to strip. then the brake/gas pedal won't change position. that creates a dangerous situation for the driver because the pedals get stuck too far away for some drivers and too close for others. this is a fleet wide issue for all fords with adjustable pedals. *tr

Drove the vehicle to work and went to leave and i had no reverse. the transmission had been slamming into reverse and then engaging prior to this-but no slipping or anything else. i had the fluid changed and there were no teeth or any metal in the filter or pan-but this did not fix the problem. spoke with 3 transmission shops in my town and all told me the 05 explorers had junk transmissions. that the fluid in part of them from the factory was bad and the tranny itself was just a big mistake. this needs to be recalled- $1338 later, i have a rebuilt 'junk' transmission. i have owned fords in the past and loved them, but my explorer ended this lover affair. everywhere you look online there are complaints about this vehicle- and no one is making ford do anything about it. *tr

Right next to the ford emblem a crack developed. it's on the rear glass hatch and runs from the top of the fiberglass panel to the bottom. the panel keeps expanding and contracting with the crack going from just a slight line to a 3/16" gap! definitely a manufacturer defect. i've seen many other explorers with the same issue. the truck was in perfect condition when it appeared and ford says that it's not their problem. too bad your warranty has run out! poor design that ford should fix for the money we have given them for the vehicle. *tr

Heat component: tried to defrost the windows on my vehicle, when i adjusted the controls to the heat i began to hear a loud clicking noise and no heat was coming out of the vent. winter is in and it is extremely difficult to see when driving due to this issue. two other individuals with the same make & model have the same exact issue with there vehicle. i feel that it is a failed piece of equipment that causes a high safety risk. *tr

The activheat heated car seat cover model # 6hcscbl24 was recalled because the seat cover could overheat and burn me. on august 12, 2011 i mailed in my request for a new seat cover along with a 3" x 5" section of the front mesh fabric of the seat cover to activheat seat recall, c/o atlas north, po box 873, woodbury, nj 08096. the recall letter stated that i would receive the new seat cover in 30 days. it has been over 60 days and i have not received the replacement seat cover. i have called 800-541-3722 twice to inquire about the recall. the answering service has taken my name and phone # and said they would call me. i have not received a call. please help me obtain the new seat cover.

Took our 2005 ford explorer to service dept. before warranty expired-previously alexander ford, now ford of murfreesboro. the transmission had been slipping periodically at the time. they drove it & said nothing was noticeable. i indicated to them that it slipped maybe once or twice every month or so. now vehicle is out of warranty. i was driving in traffic and the transmission slipped on me. i had a car in front of me & when it finally let up, i almost hit the vehicle in front of me-with a baby in a car seat in the back seat. when i slammed on my breaks after the transmission kicked in, i suffered whiplash. it scared me to death. there appear to be so many transmission problems with the 2005 explorers. this is dangerous and someone should do something about it for a recall. they should have checked my vehicle out more extensively rather than barely drive it for a few minutes when it was under warranty. i could have injured a child & i did injure myself. *tr

While driving on the highway, transmission slippage occurred switching suddenly from drivinig to neutral, gear could not be changed unless vehicle was parked and brake pedal was pressed down. scary situation considering that i could be driving on the left lane. please consider this as a safety complaint and request for safety recall. *kb

While shifting into reverse sometimes there is a 3-4 second delay. it is also slamming into reverse at times. more frequent as time goes on. this is a know issue from tsb 05-15-4 causing by the ford factory failing to put an additive in the transmission fluid. this should be covered by ford. i'm now looking at a costly repair. *tr

I own a 2005 ford explorer that i purchased in june, 2005. on saturday, february 21, 2009, i attempted to shift my 2005 ford explorer, which had roughly 49,000 miles driven at the time, into reverse in order to back out of my driveway. in doing so, the gearshift almost completely broke away from the steering column. i was able to turn the ignition off, but was unable to remove the key from the ignition. after having the vehicle towed to the dealer, i was informed that the gearshift is not a serviceable part and that the entire steering column would need to be replaced. the service representative stated she had never seen this issue before, it was not covered under warranty, and the cost for a new steering column and associated labor would be more than $1,600. she also informed me that a used steering column from a junkyard would cost much less, but that she would not be able to provide the exact amount until early monday morning. on monday morning, i was informed by krf south that they could obtain a used steering column and the total costs for parts and labor would be $620. i chose to have the used used steering column installed due to the price differential. simply put, a gearshift should not break off from the steering column through normal vehicle use. i believe this to be a serious safety issue that should be addressed by ford. i was fortunate enough to be able to turn off the ignition after the gearshift broke away. had i not been able to turn the vehicle off, i would have needed to remain in the vehicle with my foot on the brake until i could get assistance. now i have a replaced steering column, with the everlasting thought that the gearshift could break off at any point in the future. i have a wife and 3 small children and i am hesitant about her using the vehicle due to the fact this may very well happen again. *tr

The car stalls while driving at various speeds from 25 mph to 55 mph without warning. the loss of power brakes and steering at these higher speeds is extremely dangerous especially in close traffic. after coasting to a stop the car restarts easily. this stalling occurs with the cruise control on and off and does not appear to be a factor. weather in all cases was dry and warm. the stalling has occurred several times ,weeks and months apart. two ford dealers have looked at the car but cannot find a computer code problem, they also haven't been able to recreate the problem thus they say they cannot fix the problem. a web search divulges that others have reported this similar problem to ford for the 2002,2004 and 2005 explorer. please look into this before someone gets injured or killed! *tr

Parking brake shoes broken. advised during regular service that shoes were broken during earlier service and was advised to wait until rear brakes required service since parking brake is rarely used. during service on 9/21/2011 request repair of parking brake in which the shoes were replaced at cost of $424.19. inquired as to cause since parking brake is rarely used and was told that could be the reason. overheard another service rep state that, quote, "explorer's are notorious for that". currently contacting ford national customer relations to inquire about possible partial reimbursement since problem appears to be wide spread. *tr

On friday, 8/12/11, at approximately 5:30 pm, i noted an approximately 2" long crack on the rear hatch panel, located just above and beside the ford emblem. as of this past monday, 8/15/11, this crack has now extended all the way across the panel. i have had this vehicle for 3 years without any type of body damage or accidents. this is not an area where another vehicle would have hit mine. as far as i know, this just appeared with no reason. i have done extensive research on the internet and noted this is a common problem with this year, make and model of ford and is apparently based on defective glue. i contacted a local ford company and was advised that this is not under warranty.

While stopped at a traffic light i switched on my turn signal to indicate a right turn and noticed the normal click of the turn signal was not occurring. i looked down at my instrument panel and saw the right turn light was lit but not flashing. the rest of the trip i had to continually turn on and turn off the turn signal to let others now my intentions since the signals would no longer flash. finally i rapidly worked the switch up and down and was able to get the turn signals to operate correctly again. also on other occasions the signal would click very fast which and the actual signal light would not flash or light but would eventually start working again. i assumed it was a burned-out bulb but when it came back on again i knew that was not the case. i saw a recall recently for the turn signal switch on ranger pickups and excursion suvs in the age range of my vehicle and this seems to be exactly what is happening with my explorer.

While driving, when i applied the brakes, the car lurched and made a noise. about 1 minute after that, a warning light that stated "engine fail safe mode" and a little wrench showed up on the left of the instrument panel. i was driving home, and the car started to speed up without my increasing the speed using the gas pedal. the car continued to lurch off and on until i got home. i researched this problem on the internet and it seemed to be the throttle body assembly that had failed. upon taking it to the mechanic, that is exactly what is was. the car was dangerous to drive, i could have been killed had the car's speed kept increasing. the repair was $1026.00.

The ford explorer from the mid-2000s is starting to show multiple defects. ford co. advised owners to report these problems through this complaint form because as of now they are not doing anything to recall the defects. the back panel below the back window cracks vertically right near the ford emblem. some cars have multiple cracks. the majority of this type of ford explorer body type are showing the crack. it happens around the 5 year mark. i believe it is due to freeze/thaw happening at the back window, which then cracks the body. it is an expensive repair job and owners are advised to not even bother because it will happen again. it appears abruptly and is disconcerting to see this suddenly and for no personal reason happen to your car due to bad design. newer explorers have been redesigned so it doesn't happen. the second defect which is happening now to many explorer owners at the 5 year mark is the failure of the heating system. the damper flap starts clicking non-stop and there is no heat. again the repair is expensive because the entire dashboard has to be taken off to repair. these defects are widely discussed on the internet and this is the only real formal way to document them. the ford explorer has proven to be a real lemon, full of design defects and a real disappointment.

This problem is very stressful on a senior citizen with a heart condition who's heart is functioning at 60% and on medication everyday. upper back hatch has factory defect crack next to the lock, in the last couple of months it has been unlocking itself at random, while sitting still or driving. no injuries, muggings ,theft,kidnapping of grandchildren and/ or escape or theft of four children yet!!!. i do not have the extra monies to fix..it is fords factory defect that i see on explorers everywhere. i have contacted them , and they still claim no safety issue. *tr

I'm the original owner and have 76,306 miles on my explorer. i noticed a gas smell. i took it in to the dealer. dealer found a gas leak where the filler hose attaches to the gas tank. the plastic piece that is part of the gas tank had many cracks/fractures that allowed fuel to leak out. the only repair option is to replace the entire gas tank at a cost to me of $2,009.00. i feel this is a design flaw and a safety issue. the gas tank holds 22.5 gallons of fuel that could flow onto the hot exhaust pipe if the plastic filler piece failed completely. *tr

My 2005 ford explorer came with metal valve caps on the tires, when i brought it in for service with a low pressure signal on, the dealer told me that the valve caps were frozen onto the stems, and if he tried to take off the caps, they would snap the sensors in the tires, and it would cost approximately $600. to replace all four sensors. i responded that it would cost $600. to put air in the tires because of a design defect? the response was yes. my point, if you did not have the money to correct a mfr's design error, you are riding on under-inflated tires, creating a potentially hazardous situation. *tr

I have a problem with the cruise control on my 2005 ford explorer. my son first discovered it back in july-august 2010. while he was adjusting his speed for the cruise control while on the highway, the car completely stalled out and he lost all power steering and brakes. thank goodness, he had the peace of mind to put the car in neutral and turn the key to start it again. i would not have thought to do that while traveling at a high speed trying to control the vehicle without power brakes or steering. since that initial episode, both my son and my husband have tested it at slower speeds and have had the same results. so we brought it to a ford dealer in our area to have it checked out. they eventually determined that it was a problem with the electronic throttle box and that it would cost in the range of $800-850 to fix. i asked the dealer if there was a recall regarding this problem and he said there wasn't. i questioned why there wasn't since this was clearly a safety issue, stalling at high speeds. i realize it is only when i use the cruise control but that still doesn't take away the safety concern. he assured me that it would not happen if the cruise control was not used. so i opted to contact their customer service center to see what they could do. $800-850 is a lot of money. i got feedback on the issue a couple of days later that basically said there was no recall so they couldn't help me. then i was asked to fill out a customer service survey where i reiterated that my concerns about the safety issue were not answered. i have not gotten a response from them and that was back on 8-10-10. so i am now writing to you. just how does a safety recall get started? are there other people out there that have had the same problem? *tr

The transmission started slipping and would not engage right away. engine would rev but vehicle wouldn't go. the vehicle then started smoking from underneath. the dealer stated that the transmission had a massive fluid leak inside the converter housing and fluid was dripping on the hot exhaust. the leak was caused by a defective pump seal in the transmission, with only 39,200 miles. the repair cost $1100.00. last year i spent $800.00 to replace the failed solenoids in the transmission body that were posted in a ford technical service bulletin. however, ford did not wish to cover the cost since i was outside of the warranty by one year although i only had 35,900 miles at the time. *tr

The sun visor support of the ford explorer 2005 is defective and breaks easily. this has happened 3 times to me and as per research in the web, it is a problem that happens very often in this model. one time it happens while driving, and the sun visor was hanging and blocking the view. i was able to stop, but there is a potential safety problem, that could cause accidents, all for a small defective plastic piece. the hinge base is made of poor resistance plastic and has a terrible design, this is incredible taking into account that the visor arm is metallic and it transfers a considerable force to this plastic base each time you fold or use the sun visor. *tr

Car was parked and off out in front of garage, all doors locked. approximately one hour we noticed the car was on fire outside. fire was coming from inside engine hood. fire department showed up, put out fire and kicked in the windows. damage was severe and life-threatening; large fire almost caught the entire apartment building on fire. the fireman said that this seemed due to an electrical problem and not arson due to the way the fire came from the engine, all doors and windows of the car were closed with no evidence of break-in. this problem seems to be similar to the recall for scds the cruise control deactivation ford made on suvs and pickups 1998-2002 but this occurred on a 2005 ford explorer. please help! people almost died due to this terrible hazard ford has not fixed. *tr

On three occasions within the past three weeks, my car has lost all power. on two of these occasions, i was slowing down to make a turn in the road and on the third time, i was driving on a straight-away. each time i was doing less than 40 mph. only one time was anyone else in the vehicle but it was still very scary and very upsetting, considering i have only had the vehicle for 8 months. i am just afraid that this is going to happen when i am going faster or in heavy traffic. so far, i have been lucky and have not been in any traffic when this has occurred. *tr

Was traveling westbound on hwy 98 in florida when the vehicle slammed on its brakes to stop at the yellow light, my reaction time was not enough to stop in time to not hit him. i hit the back of the work van going between 45-55 mph. my seatbelt was fastened and the inertia reel never locked in. my head hit the steering wheel and the airbags didn't deploy. my front bumper made solid impact. i am taking my vehicle to a shop on tuesday to have everything looked at and fixed. *tr

I have a 2003 ford explorer. i have had so much trouble with the check fuel cap light coming on, it has been replaced twice, then the technician reset the warning light. in december 2008 the car just stopped taking fuel, it seemed like it was full. it would take me a half hour to fill the tank. i took it to the ford dealer, they said they cleaned all the sensors in and around the fuel tank, i paid a bill of $370. the next time i filled it with gas, it did the same exact thing again. i took it back to the dealer, they put a new filler neck on it and charged me $260. it worked for a short time, then in february it started doing it again! i did not want to put any more money in it, after about a month of that, it fixed itself. now, the check fuel cap light is on again, and also the service engine soon light. this has been, without a doubt, the worst car i have ever purchased in my entire life, i purchased it new and it has been trouble from day one. the service manager said i was having this trouble putting the gas in it because i have put a lot of gas in it....excuse me, you can bet he wouldn't have said that to my husband if he took it in for service! *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford explorer. the contact continued to hear a roaring noise coming from her vehicle. she took her vehicle to the dealer and they stated that the front driver's side wheel bearings were defective. the necessary repairs were made by an independent mechanic. the two front wheel bearings were replaced and, upon further investigation, all four wheel bearings were found to be defective. all four wheel bearings were replaced at the cost of over $600. the failure and current mileages were less than 120,000.

We purchased a 2005 ford explorer in may ¿08 w/38000 mi. on it carfax, at that time, indicated a new transmission was installed on 2/9/07 @ 27643 mi. lately the transmission has not been running good so we took it to our mechanic, who tells us it is a "ticking time bomb" and needs a new transmission asap. the car currently has 48953 mi on it. he encourages us to investigate recalls and warranty info. we called the dealership who installed the transmission in 2/07, they said it had not been replaced, but other parts (relating to the trans) were replaced. we requested a copy of the service order faxed to us. once rec'd, codes and wording are very confusing but we believe it to indicate that the transmission was replaced. also the service tech we spoke to told us the warranty was a 3 yr/36k mi so a replacement now would not be covered. we believe this transmission has a major defect if, in fact, it was replaced @ 27643 and the new one now has only 21000 mi on it. we called ford motor co service dept. based on their records from the vin #, they told us the transmission was replaced in 2/07. we were also told that the warranty was changed on the ¿05 explorer transmission to 3 yr/75k mi. (why wasn't the length of term changed also?). they also told us that the new transmission did not come with a new warranty of its own ¿ it fell under the old warranty. we've had this vehicle for 8 months; we¿ve put 11k miles on it and it needs major repairs that were evident prior to our purchase. questions remain: did the dealership replace the transmission in ¿07 or not? if not, what was done to correct the problem and was ford motor co. billed for a new transmission? if it was replaced, why are these transmissions going bad after only 20-25k miles? and why won¿t ford stand behind their product? *tr

After having this vehicle for only 2 years, the heater/ defroster does not work. it seems to be the switch that selects heat and cold is broken and only makes a clicking sound, and will not pull in heat to defrost the windows and warm up the passenger compartment. this repair costs quite a bit of money. this is also a severe safety hazard due to winter driving conditions and the need to defrost the windshield. i have seen several others complain of the same problem. *tr

I recently went to get into my car to go to work, and when i tried to engage the gear shifter is didn't want to go into reverse so i tried again and the gear shifter broke off of the casing of the steering column and i had to replace the whole steering column in order to drive my vehicle again. *tr

On several occasions (about 6 times total) and without any warning, my 2005 ford explorer has lost all power. all incidents have occurred within the past 6 months with the most recent occurrence on november 26, 2008. each incident has occurred at speeds below 45 mph and while coasting on a slight downgrade. my concern is that i will lose power in a crucial situation and not be able to steer or stop effectively since these features function most effectively with full power. in all instances i moved the gear to neutral and restarted the engine without any trouble. i did catch it one time before it lost power, again while coasting i noticed the tachometer drop to almost 0. at seeing this i tapped the accelerator, the rpm went back to a normal range and i drove on as normal. *tr

I was removing caps on valve stems to check tire pressure when the valve stem broke off in the cap. it immediately deflated the tire completely! i was lucky that i was not driving. the tire was completely flat and coming off the rim. i had the spare tire put on. when i went to the ford dealer said that they had alot of vehicles in that the valve stems had broken off. very dangerous. i am now afraid that the valve stems on the other tires could do the same thing. because they also have tire sensors in valve stems it is very costly to replace and only a ford dealer can get the part and recalibrate the computer for the sensors. *tr

Last year the fuel gauge began having intermittent failures, and would not read out the correct amount of fuel in the tank. notified the dealer, who supposedly reprogrammed the pcm in the vehicle. after the vehicle was out of warranty coverage, the fuel gauge began malfunctioning again. i have spoken with other explorer owners who have had the same problem, even after the dealer has replaced hundreds of dollars worth of components. i feel this is a serious safety related design flaw, as operating a vehicle without knowing the correct fuel level can be very dangerous. the only way we maintain a safe fuel level in our vehicle is by keeping the tank topped off frequently, and keeping track of the miles on the odometer. a newer vehicle, with modern electronics, should not have this many problems. *tr

While i was towing a trailer that was well under the weight limit for the vehicle, the transmission began leaking fluid. due to the design of the exhaust system, the fluid leaked directly onto the hot exhaust pipe under the vehicle, which caused large amounts of smoke to come from under the vehicle. i was stranded on the side of a busy freeway with the vehicle smoking profusely. the transmission was covered under the warranty, and the dealer repaired the transmission on site. it took almost four weeks to get our vehicle back from the dealer. i fear that a large transmission fluid leak on one of these faulty designed vehicle could start a fire or cause a serious accident in the future. *tr

Vehicle had a dead battery roughly 6 months ago. dealer replaced battery under warranty, but did no other diagnostics on the vehicle. if the vehicle is not driven every day, the battery drains down, and now the battery will not charge at all. now my vehicle is out of warranty coverage, and the dealer will not diagnose the charging system problem. this vehicle is completely unreliable, and the charging system failure is just one of my many complaints about this vehicle. *tr

2005 ford explorer xlt rear wheel studs shear off, wheel falls off while driving, no warning. has happened three times 1st time 9/22/08 rear passenger side wheel fell off. travel speed approx. 25mph. all five studs sheared off. towed in had repaired. cost $442.00 including purchase of a new wheel. 10/1/08 heard a slight chirp in drivers side rear so i removed center cap and found two sheared off studs still attached to the center cap. replaced all 5 studs total cost $204.00 10/18/08 arrived home from a fishing trip a distance of 600miles round trip looked at wheels and found missing stud on the passenger side rear missing and another stud stripped. currently have car at a ford dealership for repair which will be approx. $180.00. i have called ford motor co, 4 times yesterday and today with them denouncing this could happen and accepting 0 responsibility and have told me there is nothing they can do. they say they have never had a complaint with this issue. i find that hard to believe since by goggling "ford explorer wheel falls off" or "ford explorer wheel studs fall off" i find over two dozen exact complaints about ford explorer studs shearing off. like mine, in most cases the suv has between 48,000 and 50,000 miles. and in many reports it happens multiple times to the same vehicle. i found ford motor co. representatives taking a total no responsibility posture and to be very uncaring about the possibility of major accident, injury or death that my be caused by this faulty condition. i write this complaint with hopes you may take the appropriate action to make our highways safer. *tr

2005 ford explorer xlt 4.0l v6 28,000 miles purchased new on july 7, 2005 we started having problems with the fuel system in the end of june 2008 (intermittent loss of fuel gauge and service engine soon dash light) called the ford dealer on or about july 1, 2008. we were driving and the truck engine died, no warning no steering no brakes, (the wrench light and engine failed test mode light came on) she managed to get it to the side of the road where it started up as if everything was ok, moments later it happened again, this time she put it in neutral and it started again while moving. she drove it to my house and took my car home. *tr

My vehicle started to have the fuel gauge act erratic . it would go up and down , then it would go to below empty . in late may the fuel gauge quit completely and the check engine light has been on the entire time . i have no warranty and now the fuel pump looses pressure after sitting over night . today it started to stumble while i was driving it . i am disabled and i cant afford 770 $ . the vehicle only has 52000 miles on it . i am told by ford dealer that the pump/fuel sender/ gas cap sender unit needs to be replaced . i believe that this should be a recall situation , because a vehicle this new should not be having this problem . *tr

Car had died approx. 4 times before leading up to this event. on each prior occasion we were able to restart the car. when we contacted ford dealer in ok, they said they couldn't diagnose the problem without it happening while the vehicle was in their possession. we attributed it to bad fuel because dealer said there were no recalls with ford. then car died for no reason, could not restart, had to have it towed. ford repair shop thought it was the throttle body unit which they replaced then they still couldn't get it to start. after further research they discovered that the harmonic balancer had separated and damaged the crank shaft sensor and that was why it wouldn't start to a tune of $1100.0 which was not covered under warranty because it had 40,100 miles and the warranty expired @ 36,000 miles. *tr

2 days ago the transmission on my 2005 explorer began to hesitate between 2nd and 3rd gear. the next morning while on my way to a service station, it slipped out of 2nd and never found 3rd... the engine just revved up. i could shift on the column so i did that to get the vehicle to the dealership. after running some tests, the dealer told me that 3rd gear was "gone" and that i needed a new transmission. this is a 3 year old vehicle and i've spent 1.5 years of those three in the desert... there is no reason that the transmission should blow after 3 years regardless of the fact that for 1.5 years of it, it wasn't driven regularly. ford needs to own up to this and take care of it's customers. this will be my last ford. *tr

Both sun visors in my 2005 explorer broke within a day of each other. the small plastic holder on each of them shatter into microscopic pieces with nothing on the visors. no cd holders or sunglasses either. they just broke while driving down the road. they were both folded up and not being used. it was very strange. it happened when i was driving and i felt like it was very dangerous because it dangled by a wire that could not be cut due to what it was connected to. i tried electrical tape and anything i could think of but it would not stay up. i could not get an appt until the following week and had to drive with this obstruction for 2 days. not only was it annoying but it was very unsafe. of course, my warranty had expired two months prior to this incident. it cost me $205.00 to have this repaired and i feel like this could be a recall issue because i have seen more complaints online by several other people with this car. *tr

I bought one of the sharpest suv's i ever saw - a 2005 ford explorer xlt 4x4 6 cylinder. it started randomly dying on me like the others i have read about (70+ on the interstate was the most interesting!) this vehicle doesn't have a cable from the gas pedal to the throttle; the computer takes the request from the pedal and then the computer opens the throttle. so, if the computer can't "see" what the throttle is actually doing, that could be a bad thing, and for safety reasons, shuts everything down (ford's so called fmem "limp home mode"). well, i replaced the tps, and it started again. i took it to the dealer, and in return for 90 dollars, they plugged a box into my suv, pushed a button and then told me the pcm was bad. the pcm (powertrain control module) is the main brain for the car. everything is either directly controlled by it, or by a submodule (srs, 4wd, abs, eatc, instrument cluster, tpms, and vcm) that it directly controls. here is the rub: consider people that lose a limb, but continue to feel its¿ presence. that¿s¿ because even in the absence of real time data from the limb, the brain has a problem and ¿thinks¿ it sees the limb. in case the analogy isn¿t clear, if the pcm begins to fail, it might say *any* sensor is failing. but the sensor is fine ¿ the brain is ¿broken¿. if it is broken due to a heat or vibration issue, it can work perfectly for however long, then just go nuts for a little while. that¿s what scares me the most ¿ this pcm controls everything, right? what happens if it commands the throttle to wide open, commands the transmission to shift to 1st, then fires the airbags? can you prove it couldn't? my problem in a nutshell is that an emissions control item like the pcm shouldn't fail in three years. ford should just fix it instead of charging a grand plus labor. all of these others having intermittent surging, stalling failsafe mode and throttle issues i am betting is the same problem. *tr

5 speed automatic transmission in 2005 ford explorer 4x4 eddie bauer, slips/fails to change gears usually either at highway speeds (passing slower vehicles, uphill downshifting) and also has a severe delay in engaging in reverse (3-5 seconds) i am concerned that these two issues could result in a severe or deadly accident. this problem is wide spread according to my research, usually resulting in ford dealer not repairing the problem under warranty. i have children in the vehicle often and feel that when the transmission "can't find the gear" , another vehicle could strike mine. vehicle has less than 35,000 miles . *tr

I recently purchased a near new 2005 ford explorer. the vehicle is in pristine condition and has very low mileage to the point where it is below the industrial average. since i purchased the vehicle, i have fueled it several times, always filling the tank to the top. every time i have filled the vehicle up, the fuel gauge has dropped to empty and the mileage till empty indicator shows just dashes. in addition to the gauge dropping to empty my "service engine light" comes on immediately following the fuel gauge dropping. at first i thought it was possibly just a problem with my vehicle so i figured i'd have it fixed. then out of curiosity i decided to check online and with other fellow owners of the 2002-2005 ford explorer model to see if they were having this problem as well. and to my surprise i found that it was a very common problem. this issue disturbs me mainly because it is a safety issue. god forbid my wife is traveling down the road with my 14-month-old son and runs out of fuel due to a faulty fuel gauge on a deserted dark highway. since this was such a common problem i thought i would be able to come online and find out that there was a recall. but i did not find that. all i found was a bunch of people complaining about the same exact thing. now my question is, why hasnt there been a recall yet with an updated part for replacement? if someone could contact me and assist me with this matter i would greatly appreciate it. thank you *tr

2005 ford explorer, driving on a twisty coastal highway, about 35 mph, turned wheel to follow right hand turn in the road, there was no power to the steering wheel, or to the brakes. i had to wrench the wheel really hard to the right to keep from driving off of the road. i finally pulled to the side, turned on hazard lights, removed key from ignition. i reinserted key, car started and ran as if nothing ever happened. i drove for another 20 miles, about 40 minutes, without incident. then the engine cut out again-no warning, just all of a sudden i was unable to accelerate. service engine light came on, small wrench icon lit up, and digital display message "engine failsafe mode" appeared. there is nothing in the owner's manual about this warning message. i have taken the car to ford dealer service where it was purchased. they have told me a sensor on a belt was damaged when the belt slipped off its pulley, and that sensor was therefore unable to sense the crankshaft, and therefore the engine shut down. there was no indication of why this occurred in the first place, or what measures could be done to assure that it does not happen again. this engine shutoff had occurred twice before, but both times the road was uncrowded, and straight, and the car ran fine after starting back up, so i didn't really think about it. but the idea that i could have very easily driven off the road, off a cliff (!) and died, or had my family in the car and this same thing could have happened, this to me is terrifying, and unacceptable. i realize there is inherent risk in driving a car, but potentially lethal malfunction of the vehicle should not be among those risks. *tr

Locking mechanism on the inside of the driver door stopped working after only 41 thousand miles. when vehicle was taken to the dealer for the problem to be addressed, they advised that the wires for the lock mechanism were caught inside the door jam, and had to be replaced. the locking and unlocking button on the inside drivers door would not unlock or lock the car. this is obviously a safety hazard as if there is an accident the button would not work to unlock the door and allow the passenger to get out of the car. i contacted ford motor company and they advised this is not currently a recall, therefore i am submitting this request for review and follow-up for potential safety defects. no accidents led up to this event, it was just a sudden onset where the locking mechanism failed after very little use. thank you very much for your time and assistance. *tr

I purchased a new ford explorer xlt with just under 6,000 miles from my local ford dealer. it was considered "new" because it had under 6,500 miles (it was their demo car.) 5000 into my new purchase, at approximately 11,000 miles, i began experiencing transmission problems. the vehicle drifted back while in gear and would not shift into gear smoothly. i took it in for repair as a transmission complaint. 8,000 miles later (at approximately 19,000 miles), i was having more difficulty with a slipping transmission and took it to the ford dealer in my area. they found a leak within the transmission and found other transmission issues. at approximately 49,000 miles (current mileage), i was again experiencing transmission slips and a loud noise coming from the rear. i took it to my local ford dealer who said the rear needed replacement and basically the entire back end was falling apart. i could feel this was also related to the transmission. i, again, took it in for the 3rd time as a transmission complaint. the dealer called me and told me my car was repaired, but apparently, they only fixed what was wrong with the rear. i paid $1500 to fix the rear. i picked up my vehicle and i noticed the car was not shifting properly and it was more obvious than before. i live only 6 blocks away. i drove it home and parked the car. that morning, i could barely get my car to go into gear. it would not even go into reverse. it wouldn't move. i eventually got it to go into drive and was just barely able to return it to the dealer, which, fortunately, was just a few blocks away from my house. the car clearly had a bad transmission from the start. now, the dealer tells me i need a new transmission which will cost me $3500. i have always changed the oil every 3,000-5,000 miles. i treat the car like my baby - it was well taken care of. i have never been hard on this vehicle. i believe the back end trouble is related to the transmission, as well. *tr

Our vehicle is a 2005 ford explorer. with the cruise control set and coasting with the coast button down to 30 mph the car shuts off. we just had the car checked at courtesy ford in portland oregon and were told that everything checks out and there is nothing wrong with the car. service was able to reproduce our car shutting off with the cruise control on when coasting to 30 mph. i filed a complaint with ford customer care and was also told that all systems checked out and there is nothing wrong with our car. courtesy ford was not able to reproduce this problem in 3 other newer model explorers, but today were able to reproduce this problem in 2 other 2005 explorers.

My wife was driving our 2005 explorer and the engine died while coasting. power steering was lost. my wife was able to coast it to the side of the road since it was late at night and there was no other traffic on the road. to this point there has been nothing done about it. the dealer did not feel a error code was probably logged and to this point we have not been able to find what the problem is. *jb

The car rpms increased while stepping on brake, car has surged forward on at least 3 occasions and one time it surged backwards when in reverse and hit a pole, even though foot was on the brake. car has died on several occasions while attempting to accelerate. driver side window has failed several times, despite having the master switch replaced. *nm

2005 ford explorer, rear liftgate glass will open by itself while i am driving down the road. it has happened multiple times since we have purchased the vehicle. i can be going 30 mph or 60 mph, doesn't matter. does not appear to be any pattern as to when it happens, so is unpredictable. this creates a very dangerous situation if it happens when i am on a 6 lane exchange. also, if i have my dogs in the back or anyone sitting in the 3rd row, another dangerous situation is created. there is no way to "bungee" the glass portion to secure it. you can only bungee the lower portion of the hatch- not the glass portion. living where we can have a high wind gust at any moment creates yet another problem should it pop open and i cant get pulled over fast enough. the vehicle is now at the dealer for the 3rd time for this problem. i have even called the ford company itself, and they have opened a file. (for what good that has done me) they can not identify a problem, so they tell me there is nothing for them to fix. will the vehicle continue to be returned to me "unfixed" until my warranty period is up, and then it truly becomes "my" financial problem? these vehicles are too expensive to have this type of problem continue. will it take a disaster and someone being injured because of this failure, for corrective action to be taken? *jb

Suv was in park with emergency brake engaged. driver released hood in error got out to close hood and owner got out of middle row to release brake. when emergency brake was released car rolled and door hit parked vehicle damaging front passenger door. child was in car strapped in child's car seat. very scary feeling for car to be rolling backwards with child inside car alone. *jb

We started to hear knocking from under the hood of our vehicle, so we took it to a garage to have it checked out and the dealership told us that it was the timing chain and that the timing chain on a lot of the new fords has been going up. now our 2005 ford explorer xlt will not start and is sitting in our driveway. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated while driving various speeds, the lift gate ajar light illuminated and seconds later the lift gate opened. the vehicle was inspected by a dealer who realigned the lift gate glass strut. afterwards, while driving low speed, the entire lift gate opened without warning. the dealer instructed the contact to use a bungee cord to lock the door as a temporary repair. the vehicle was returned to the dealer who installed a lift gate dual lock assembly. there was a nhtsa recall, # 04v442000, regarding the structure. the vehicle was not included due to the vin. the manufacturer was alerted.

I purchased a 2005 ford explorer limited from a ford dealership in the spring of 2006. the vehicle was a lease return. after driving the vehicle i noticed a vibration in the floorboard and in the gas pedal. i e-mailed ford concerning this and they sent me to the dealership where i purchased the vehicle for the corrective action. i've been back and forth to the dealership appox 8 times for the same problem and no resolution has been found. i contacted ford a couple of more times and i still haven't gotten the problem resolved. in the meantime this vibration gives me back and headaches and numbness in my feet and i can no longer drive the vehicle because of the adverse affects it has on me. what more can i do? mclean ford-mercury have been great through out this whole ordeal. they've done more than most dealerships would do and have been super. unfortunately i can't say the same for ford. i'm really disappointed and dissatisfied with their service. *nm

I have a 2005 ford explorer eddie bauer which looses power steering control and braking ability at random. i have taken this vehicle into service at the dealership for repair but no satisfactory outcome is there. for the first problem of loosing the braking ability, the vehicle when started has no problems but after driving a short distance (few meters to up to a mile) the advance traction loss message is displayed in the message centre and the vehicle looses the ability to stop in the required stop distance. when applying the brakes, the pulsation is felt in the brake paddle and a screeching heard before the vehicle stops. then once the engine is turned off, and vehicle re-started, the message is reset and vehicle works fine. the second issue is that the vehicle while driving, at random gives the message in the display with an audio signal indicating oil pressure low, service engine soon and other lights in the display and rpm meter showing zero reading with loss of steering ability. there is no power assist to turn the steering whereas the engine is running and also vehicle accelerates if pedal is pushed. i have been into the dealership thrice but the problem is yet to be fixed from last 15 months. the control on the vehicle can be got back once the engine is switched off and restarted. i have resorted to putting the vehicle in neutral and let it roll and turn the engine off and then restart it and get the steering control back. i had left the vehicle at the dealership in oct 2005 for 10 days to diagnose and rectify but i was advised that problem has been reported to the authorities at ford but i am yet to hear back from the dealer or the oem. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated the engine surged and the check engine light illuminated at speeds of 30 mph. the vehicle was taken to the dealership on four occasions and were unable to correct the problem. the ring pin gear was replaced the first time the vehicle was taken to the dealership. the dealership determined the third and fourth cylinder spark plugs needed to be replaced on the second visit. the cylinder spark plugs were replaced on the third and fourth visit. the rear axle was replaced due to a shutter coming from the rear of the vehicle. the right handle was loose. the lumbar seat switch was loose. updated 09/13/06. *jb

On two separate occasions my 2005 ford explorer xlt has completely died while the vehicle was in motion. both instances happened at speeds of less than 45 mph. the vehicle goes dead, as if the key has been turned from "run" to the next position back. there are no symptoms prior to the vehicle shutting off. the vehicle experiences a total loss of power, all gauges go dead and all dash warning lights illuminate, so i know that the vehicle still has electrical power. something is causing the engine to turn off while the vehicle is in motion. this has happened on the 13th of may and again on the 2nd of june. on both occasions i took the vehicle to garry smith ford, in ft walton beach fl for service, and on both occasions i was told that they could not duplicate the fault and that there was no record of a fault in the vehicle system. i am not satisfied with their answer. they have replaced no parts on my vehicle and recommended that i simply keep driving it, until i can get it to die, then call them on the phone. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated the rear hatch liftgate glass opened without warning while driving various speeds. the vehicle was inspected by a dealer who determined the latch lock on the liftgate hatch door glass needed replaced. the problem persisted and the vehicle was returned to the dealer. the dealer replaced the latch switch for the rear hatch glass which corrected the problem.

Severe vibration in rear end of vehicle between 65 and 70 mph tire rebalancing and rotation did not improve situation at all seems worse after approx. 20 minutes of highway driving. not sure if its a tire or differential problem but it 'feels' like it is about once per rev. of the axle. vehicle has original ford rsc and goodrich 17" tires. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated while driving at no specific speed all the windows went up and down, the driver seat moved forward and backward, the radio came on and went off, and the air conditioner came on and went off. also, while attempting to apply brake pressure the brakes vibrated and a clunking noise was heard from the rear of the vehicle. the dealership inspected the vehicle and unknown repairs were made; however the repairs did not remedy the problem. the manufacturer has been alerted.

While driving, both passenger and driver side air bags deployed, without vehicle being involved in a collision or roll over. ford has refused to honor warranty, due to scratches on the underside-car frame, near box. have placed claim with insurance company. *jb

I have had nothing but problems out of my 2005 ford explorer. it has been into the dealership 4 times now. i have a grinding noise when i first begin to drive, my transmission has a delay when it shifts and you can press down the gas pedal and it almost feels like it goes into what my dad calls a passing gear before it goes. and this is usually directly after slowing down or from a dead stop. i also have a popping noise in my front end when driving down the road. my vehicle has auto 4 wheel drive and it has engaged for no apparent reason on a dry day as i was pulling into my driveway. at times when i put my vehicle into gear a few seconds later it pops down into gear like it wasn't fully in gear. it has been tippy when turning or taking curves and you have to steer hard to make tight turns. the dealership has reprogrammed my 4x4 module and my abs module but the problem is never fixed. when i take it to them they say that they don't hear or feel any problems so they cannot fix what they don't feel is wrong. i've called ford customer service to only be told that if i cannot duplicate the problem it cannot be fixed. i want to be rid of the thing it is nothing but problems only i owe too much to trade it in. i only have 7000 miles on it i shouldn't be having these many problems out of it. and i hate that they are never fixed when i have children riding it my vehicle and i don't know what is wrong with it. i regret the purchase of this car and would get rid of it in a heartbeat if i could. *jb

Gas guage failure.on the way home from buying the suv,the gas hand would not work.returned car to dealer.the dealer furnished me a new car until the car was fixed. two weeks later the same thing happened.went to a different dealer and the mechanic had a bulletion that ford had issued saying there was a problem with the gas guage because sulfur in the gas was causing the problem. ford recommends using chevron additive in the gas to solve the problem.the mechanic said the vehicle had 13000 miles on it the frist time the gas hand quit working. the car had 17000 miles when the hand quit working for the second time. the mechanic installed a new guage inside the fuel tank. this will only help for a period of time.if this happened on the freeway and you were out of gas it could be serious. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle was placed in park while running and the emergency brake applied. as the contact was standing outside the vehicle and releasing the parking brake, the vehicle engaged into reverse, and caught the contact in the side. the vehicle proceeded to drag the contact into a 4 lane highway then ran over the contact and pinned the contact's leg. the contact was ran over by the driver's side front tire and trapped. a bystander watched the accident take place and to release the contact from underneath the vehicle, the bystander was required to drive back over the leg to save the life of the contact. major injuries were sustained to the leg and side. the police were contacted to investigate the incident and provided a written report. the vehicle has remained parked and has not been taken to the dealership.

Dt*: the contact stated when activating the cruise control and the speed set at 70 mph, the cruise control deactivates itself with no interaction from the contact. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection; however the problem could not be duplicated. vehicle speed control deactivated 3 times while in use. in february 2006, after speed control deactivated it took 3 to 5 minutes to turn it back on. dealer found no problem. in march 2006, it deactivated once. *ak

I was involved in an accident on fl state road 85 at the okalossa regional airport on wednesday, february 1, 2006 at approximately 6:30 p.m. while traveling north on highway 85 another vehicle ran the stop sign exiting the airport to travel south on highway 85. my 2005 ford explorer was traveling at 55 mph and t-boned a 2003 ford minivan. none of my airbags deployed! *jb

I brought this car on january 23, 2006. when i brought the car the dealership told me that my first payment would be on march 22,2006. however i received a payment request two weeks after i brought the explorer. the salesperson completely lied to me. he didn't explain anything i wanted him to. and for worse the explorer transmission does not function properly. when i put the explorer in reverse the transmission make a terrible sound. i contact the dealership and they told me it wasn't their problem. i want to cancel the purchased of this car it is just giving me problems. *nm

I was driving my 2005 ford explorer which i purchased brand new in october 2004, when all of a sudden my gas gauge was reading e and my service engine soon light was on. this happened may 13, 2005. i immediately brought it to the dealer and was told that the fuel pump needed to be changed. since i had filled the tank the day before they wanted me to drive around and use the gas up. i refused and the wound up draining my tank. well after filling my tank up on january 20, 2006 again my gauge is ready almost e and the dash keeps telling me i have a low fuel level. this time i wasn't even driving it happened after restarting my car when they finished pumping my gas. back to the dealer i go and again i am told that the fuel pump needs to be checked out and or changed again but this time they drain the gas and since the tank is full i am supposed to drive the vehicle until i use most of the gas. i am told they do have the part in stock to make the repair. i don't like the idea of having to drive around not knowing how much gas i have. this is ridiculous. *nm

On slight incline, vehicle will roll while in gear or it hesitates to engage in gear when shifting from park. vehicle has been to the dealer for this same complaint many times. factory rep. says nothing wrong all models do the same. i have never owned a vehicle, unless equipped with standard transmission that would perform this way. what can i do? *jb

Both the rear lift-gate and back door has opened on me, while driving on the expressway and residential roads, 6 times on my 2005 eddie bauer explorer. the vehicle has only 6,500 miles on it and i'm very concerned that one day i'll be transporting something and the back door will fly open and cause an accident because my personal belongings have flown out the back into traffic. there is no pattern to when this occurs - it's very sporadic. the message center does warn me the liftgate is ajar (too bad i'm already driving and it's too late), and then the back hatch or back door will open up. i have taken the suv to the dealership to have it repaired, but they refuse to do anything about it and claim that they cannot identify a problem - therefore are unable to do anything about it. *jb

I have a 2002 ford explorer with a leaking rear differential that is making a moaning noise when the throttle is depressed. the vehicle only has 44,00 miles on it. i have discovered through extensive research that this is a chronic problem with this vehicle and that ford is "investigating" the problem. meanwhile, my dealer tells me my only recourse is a $1700 rebuild of the rear end. it is time for ford to admit that the light aluminum rear end was a poor design and recall for replacement!!! *nm

My gas gauge all of a sudden read e and my service engine soon came on, on a three month old 2005 ford explorer with 2200 miles. i have to guesstimate how much gas i have and if something does go wrong with the engine i will not know as the light is perpetually on. the dealer states the fuel sending unit is bad and the part is backordered, i 've been waiting 3 weeks already. the dealer states they are waiting on 20 of them for this same problem. i've contacted the manufacturer and they claim to have no knowledge of the problem, that my situation is the first they've heard of it. this can't be true as the dealer i took my car to is waiting on the part to fix 20 explorers with this same problem. i've also found this problem posted in numerous forums online. i don't think it's safe to drive around not knowing for sure how much gas you have or whether or not your engine is also malfunctioning. ford should issue a recall and expedite the manufacture of this backordered part. *nm

While driving down the road, the liftgate (glass portion) of my 2005 explorer will pop open. there are no patterns (i.e. hitting a bump) to when it will open. my fear is i will be hauling something - the back will come open and everything will fall out onto the raod. my dogs travel back there to and from dog shows. i took it to the dealer, they adjusted the strike plate. it stopped for a while but now it is happening again. the dealer can't define the problem so they refuse to work on it.

Rear liftgate (glass door section) opens by itself when the car is being driven. first a warning sensor lights "liftgage ajar" then the door opens. this has happened multiple times. the vehicle which is a 2005 with 3,500 miles has been to the dealer 3 times & they cannot identify the problem or fix it.

Purchased new 2005 ford explorer after first 100 miles fuel gauge went falsely to empty and service engine light came on. dealership advised the fuel sending unit for my vehicle is defective. ford has already issued a tech bulletin on the issue in may 2005 yet they are still selling the vehicle knowing the units are failing. will require them to remove my gas tank and replace unit. i beleive this should have been done prior to selling this vehicle or i shouldhave been notified of the potential problem prior to purchasing.

The rear differential of my 2002 ford explorer xls is leaking at 41,000 miles. noticed the liquid on the garage floor. after i brought it to a local dealer to look at it they tell me it is the axel seals and is 450.00 to fix.now i look at 2002 explorer rear problems on the internet and they are epidemic in perportion.

This a safety concern. while cruising on the highway at 50 mph i intended to pass slower-moving vehicles by accelerating. however, it took the automatic transmission 4-5 seconds to kick-in, and for the explorer to attain enough speed to safely pass other vehicles, even if the pedal wasfloored. the time interval was too long (other vehicle made with a/t tool only 2-3 seconds), and could cause an accident. i have referred the problem to the dealer and to ford group philis. inc. 4 months ago yet but they have not yet found a solution.*ak

I have a cracked tailgate that is a defect. i have seen this same crack on numerous ford explorer's 2002-2005. i have contacted ford and have gotten no where with this problem.there are numerous complaints of this same problem. i thought the door was closed to hard, that is not the case until i kept seeing the same crack on every ford explorer 2002-2005 then a light bulb went off there's something wrong with the tailgate, that makes it eventually crack. this has not been fixed on our vehicle, we worry the glass could shatter while continuing to close it as i have read with some owners. please help us solve this problem.
