2012-11-23	TIRES:TEMPORARY/EMERGENCY SPARE TIRE	Toyota is recalling certain model year 2001 through 2004 Tacoma light trucks manufactured from August 28, 2000, through August 27, 2004, and originally sold, or currently registered, in the following cold climate states with high road salt usage: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia. The spare tire in the subject vehicles is located underneath the rear of the vehicle and held by a spare tire carrier. A lift plate on the carrier is used to help raise, lower and retain the tire. During its manufacture, the lift plate may not have been sufficiently coated with anti-corrosion materials. If the plate is insufficiently coated and the vehicle is operated in cold climate regions where road salts are frequently used, road spray can reach the carrier assembly and corrode the lift plate. Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, dealers will inspect the vehicle and replace the spare tire carrier lift plate as necessary, free of charge. The recall began in February 2013. 2006-07-17	EXTERIOR LIGHTING	CERTAIN AJ MOTORSPORT COMBINATION LAMPS SOLD AS REPLACEMENT LAMPS FOR USE ON THE ABOVE LISTED PASSENGER VEHICLES. COMBINATION LAMPS NOT EQUIPPED WITH AMBER SIDE REFLECTORS FAIL TO CONFORM WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 108, LAMPS, REFLECTIVE DEVICES, AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT. Remedy: AJ MOTORSPORT WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND OFFER REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE LAMPS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 31, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT AJ MOTORSPORT AT 626-618-2026.

2005-05-17	SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER BALL JOINT	ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, DUE TO A MANUFACTURING ISSUE IN THE FRONT SUSPENSION LOWER BALL JOINT, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE SURFACE OF THE BALL OF THE JOINT MAY HAVE BEEN SCRATCHED. THE BALL JOINT MAY EVENTUALLY EXPERIENCE EXCESSIVE WEAR AND LOOSENESS, RESULTING IN INCREASED STEERING EFFORT. Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FRONT SUSPENSION LOWER BALL JOINTS FREE OF CHARGE. 2004-05-05	SEAT BELTS:FRONT	CERTAIN PICKUP TRUCKS FAIL TO CONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 209, ‘SEAT BELT ASSEMBLIES.’ THE DRIVER’S SIDE SEAT BELT HAS INCORRECT MARKINGS. Remedy: DEALERS HAVE REPLACED THE SEAT BELTS. NO VEHICLES WERE SOLD TO CONSUMERS.

I purchased my 2004 Tacoma in May of 2013. I found it with 89,000 miles and it only had one owner. When looking at the truck I saw that the exterior was in great shape. I looked at the outside of the frame and it seemed to have minimal rusting.

After purchasing the truck I entered my VIN at Toyota’s “Safety Recalls & Service Campaigns” website to see what recalls/service notices it had. NOTHING…

Within a few weeks of purchasing the truck, I had the transmission fluid flushed as well as the spare tire holder replaced (a recall due to none other than rust). This was done at Kings Toyota in Cincinnati, OH. In addition, I asked them to inspect the frame since I knew some Toyota’s had an issue. They completed the service and told me the frame was FINE and told me how there was a satisfactory program that had ended the previous December. I had to bring the truck back once parts came in to have the work finished and again they neglected to tell me about the SERIOUS DANGER associated with my frame.

On 3 other occasions during that same summer, I had it in for other service performed underneath the vehicle, and NOT ONCE were the large holes in the frame mentioned, nor did the office, when they entered my VIN, did anyone mention the CSP had not been performed. They did try to upsell me on new tires, and explained the safety issue of tires as their tread wears.

I was at 2 different Toyota dealerships for 4 separate service appointments and not once did anyone from Toyota flag the issue with my frame, nor the serious safety risk. Two of the services included other known improper corrosion resistance issues- a tire carrier requiring replacement, and a corroded parking brake requiring replacement components. Work for both of these was performed right next to the very obvious frame “holes”.

After noticing the holes myself, I brought it to a 3rd Toyota Dealership, who said that the defect is present on my vehicle, that if it was their truck they would not drive it another mile due to the safety concern, and that the dealership would not do anything about it as the CSP ended 12/31/12.

When I called Toyota customer support and explained all of the information above, they told me that there was nothing they would do.
