The brake lines had to be replaced due to corrosion and the fuel lines need to be but I can’t afford it. Now the anti-lock brake system is malfunctioning due to the same problem. My mechanic told me it’s a common problem And I looked on line and found out there have been many complaints reported to GM and their response has been the brakes will still stop the vehicle with broken brake lines.

K1500: I bought a used 2003 Chevrolet Silverado from an individual in Gainesville GA. When the vehicle was purchased everything was working. Now all these gauges are incorrect & the dealer is using these inaccurate gauges to avoid repairing the vehicle. We were not aware of any problems with this vehicle when we purchased it, & took it in immediately, (and I do not recall the month) the tachometer, speedometer, all the engine gauges stopped working while we were driving down the road. We could not tell how fast we were going or anything. I took it to a local dealer, who stated that it was a recall on the instrument cluster panel & wanted $700.00+ to fix it here @ June Walker Chevrolet. Since, I had service there I had felt sure that since it was a class action lawsuit that it would be take care of. However, this dealership refused to do the repair unless I paid for it myself stating that they were not liable for it. They are using incorrect gauges to justify their reasoning. I have drove Chevrolets & Fords & I know that they do not care for warranty work. However, this is a safety issue & I cannot understand why they will not fix this vehicle. I would have continued to do business with them, had they stood behind the brand. Due to the fact that we were totally unaware of this, we are being penalized for this error. Please advise

K1500: anti lock brakes engaging at low speeds on dry roads increasing your stopping distance greatly

Constantly receive reduced engine power due to faulty wiring. Wiring harness to throttle body has been replace up to the last 16 inches or so. There is believed to be a break in the wiring harness somewhere in-between the pigtail splice and the computer. Truck will go into reduced engine power on the interstate, in heavy traffic, or just on an open road. Speed, temperature, rough road have no effect. It is a random occurrence and very dangerous at times in heavy traffic.

My speedometer needle sticks in cold weather. I cannot determine my speed! GM cluster replacement policy #2253005 was only good to replace it free if you knew about the policy at 70000 miles. They replaced the steering kit once under warranty but it keeps going bad.

I bought my truck 11.9.10 from Superior Auto Center. By January 2011 the wheel bearings and steering went out. When I purchased it the battery was dead. They replaced the battery and 15 miles down the road the engine light came on. It was the catalytic converter and knock sensors. The battery being dead cleared the light. The stereo wires were flagged a fire hazard and he speakers were shorting out. The brakes were 70% worn at the time of purchase. One of the back seatbelt buckles is defective. I don’t know who else to contact with my complaint. How can they sell it to me with smog issues?

With less than 32000 miles, rear discs disintegrating causing rapid erosion of brake pads. Because the calipers still worked, warranty was voided. Acknowledged as premature wear-out of pads and rotors. Rotors were rusty, flaking and discolored. Must return a second time because parking brake does not work at all.

Why does Chevrolet continue to build such a poor product. My Silverado, along with several others on the highway have wiring defects that affect the tail light/brake harness and the ignition system. Being stranded twice, along side an Arizona highway during summer might be bad enough, but to add the embarrassment of owning a product that has faulty day-lamps, tailgate latches that snap when you close (not slam) your tailgate,and moldings that were apparently built by the cheapest supplier is just wrong. I’ll never purchase another GM product, neither will any of my family, friends or co-workers. It’s a shame that Chevrolet has NO PRIDE…

While traveling in Georgia in late December, I had a breakdown. Prior to the breakdown, the truck had been problem free. Duvall Chevrolet of Clayton, Georgia, determined that the Transfer Case needed to be replaced. I agreed to have a GMC replacement Transfer Case with a 3 year warranty. I was in a travel status and continued west after the repair was completed. I had only gotten about a hundred miles when I realized that I had a fairly significant vibration that I hadn\’t had prior to the repair. I called Duvall, who told me it was probably nothing serious and I should talk with my hometown dealership when I got home. Subsequently, I determined that I had fluid leaking from an area near the Transfer Case. I stopped a Herb Adcox Chevrolet in Chattanooga, TN, where I was told the Transfer Case was leaking and a damaged U Joint was the cause of the vibration. As I understand it, the U Joint is connected to the Drive Shaft which is connected to the Transfer Case. Who paid? Me. Adcox topped off the Transfer Case fluid so that I could return to my hometown dealership, Goodwin Chevrolet in Brunswick, Maine. Goodwin inspected the vehicle and determined that the problem was a crack in the Transfer Case Adaptor Housing, which is connected to what else: the Transfer Case. But, they also determined that this wasn\’t covered by the warranty, even though the work that they completed was almost identical to that done replacing the Transfer Case. Guess who paid? Me. I don\’t pretend to be a mechanic, but it defies logic that these problems that were non-existent prior to the Transfer Case replacement and essentially connected to that mechanism were not part of the original problem or the result of the work completed. I submit any rational objective person would reach that conclusion, but not GM. I filed a complaint with GM Customer Service (File # 71-612320192, but they played a dazzling shell game after discarding all the shells. Somehow, they reached the conclusion that all of this was unrelated and they had no warranty responsibilities. I don\’t buy it and won\’t be buying anymore GM products.

This new vehicle has a romping sound like a wheel bearing. Both front bearings and hubs have been replaced, differential replaced which did not solve the problem. GM tells me that it is a problem they are having nationwide with the 2003 Silverados. On March 24, the dealership replaced something in the differential, but the problem continues. I have not heard of anyone else having this problem and am wondering if they are giving me the runaround. I have contacted the GM customer complaint and the problem continues. The complaint number is 1-71056327. Soon after purchasing the truck, the inside mirrors temperature malfunctioned and had to be replaced. Also on the left fender (sportside truck) was a hump in the fiberglass fender. Whole left side of truck bed had to be replaced.

this is a 2500hd with a duramax motor. tha diesel engine does not creat vacum, they use a hydro boost unit powed by the power steering pump. the routing of the power steering hose laied acroos the steering gear box rubbing a hole in the stell line. this action caused me to loose steering and brakes. dealer would do nothing to help me!!!.

The anti-lock brakes on my Silverado started to intermittently engage when stopping and the speed had dropped to about 3 – 5 mph. I almost rear ended the vehicle in front of me. Since it was unsafe to drive, I took it to my auto mechanic. He verified that the wheel bearings needed to be replaced. He mentioned this was a common problem. Someone else present said they disconnected their GM anti-lock brakes because it was doing the same thing. GM refused to pay anything towards the repair. I asked to speak to asupervisor. She (Katherine Prince 866.790.5700 ext. 41016) also said under no circumstances would GM pay for this repair.

steering shaft emits “clunking”felt through the steering wheel while turning at low speed. Diagnosed as widespread problem with steering shafts. Two month wait for part.I was told it was a nuisance but not a safety problem.Also there is an intermittent problem with “upstroke” of wiper blades in delay mode. Blades stop momentarily in center of winshield.this did not happen while being “checked out” at the dealer’s, therefore it was not diagnosed.

Speedometer inoperative. I have had this vehicle into the shop on four different times to repair this problem and they road tested to duplicate the problem but found no problem. this is an on going problem for chevrolet for the 2003 silverado truck one dealer in San Bernardino Ca. is replacing A miniumn of 20 clusters per week documented but because of my mileage at this point they will do nothing for me.

On Sept. 5th this truck was purchased from Spadoni Motors , Hwy. 17 , Terrace Bay Ontario for a total purchase price of $ 44,363.87 . My truck ahs a duramax diesel w/allision trans.On 4 ocassions the engine has accellerated by it self from idle. GM says the PCM is programed to do this if it senses that the engine is going to stall it will automaticaly jump the RPM,s 300 by it self. I almost hit a car on one ocassion I won’t let anyone drive the truck as if this happened in a parking lot iwth people around I could injure someone. GM’s answer is they have never heard of this and I am out of luck. The gvw is 11400 so it doesn’t fall under the lemon law. The dealer has offered to buy it back at an $8000 loss. I took deliver on 4/1/03 and the truck was at the dealers for 5 out of the first 7 weeks I owned it GM told me that is what the wtty is for and I did not have a replacement vehile. The truck had a bad vibration and Mike Mckab for GM’s coustomer relations told me this was because of the way the truck was transported and it would clear up, well the dealer replaced 5 out of the 6 tires on the truck because they would not pass the road force test. All I get from GM is lies and we never had that problem. Help I don’t know where to turn!!

Most major problem is that any time vehicle get below 50 mph when decelerating or slowing down transmission freewheels. In their words it goes into a neutral mode. I do honestly believe that this is not legal by the national vehicle codes. This is normal for this vehicle but makes it very dangerous coming down out of the California mountains, and driving in city traffic. Would seem to be very hard on the brakes. Have driven others at Sunset Chevrolet, in Banning, Calif. And they respond in the same manner. This is on the 2500 Duramax hd with Allison transmission.

making humming noise when engine is cold between 25 30 miles per hour

I took my vehicle to the dealership (Woody Chevrolet Sales, Lexington, VA.) Dec 28, 2005 for oil and filter change only. After a two hour wait they returned my vehicle and when I drove away I immediately felt major changes in the braking and steering of the truck. Turned around and went right back. Ask what they had done to my vehicle to create these changes and they claimed to only have changed the oil. January 1, 2006 at startup the vehicle service light for the emission system came on. Still having braking and steering problems. Intend to seek repair from a different dealer this week.

I purchased this vehicle on 3/6/03 approximately 2 weeks after purchase when we were driving the vehicle a SERVICE 4WD light came on. I was told the 4 wheel drive didn\’t work when the light was on and it was a computer reset problem. I took it to Spradley Motors in Pueblo Colorado and told it was fixed, the light came on again along with the seat belt light flashing on and off even when the seat belt was on. The pre-tensioner was ordered and replaced as was the buckle on the drivers seat belt. This on 4/22/03. On 4/25/03 the light came on again and I took it back to Spradley motors, they replaced a computer part and told me it was definitely fixed. On 4/30/03 during a trip to Denver the light again came on and I call Med Ved Chevrolet the original place I purchased it (120 miles from my home) and they said bring it in the other place isn\’t fixing it right and we know exactly what is wrong with it. I told them this was the last try and they completely blamed Spradley saying the new part wasn\’t even programmed correctly and they assured me it was fixed now. I got to Colorado Springs about 1 hour away from them at 8:15 PM and the Service 4WD light came back on. If this isn\’t a lemon I don\’t know what is. They said the entire computer was checked and there were no errors etc, yet I get 1 hours away from them and there the light is again and I don\’t have 4 wheel drive on a $49,000 vehicle.

I have done some reserch, and it appears that other owners are having the same problems as myself. The A/C compressor has gone completely out on me, twice, durring road trips in the summer. The service rep stated that it was a faulty relay switch and they didn’t get the updated switch until the second repair attempt. The A/T has a rough studder/slip when switching between 1st and 2nd gear, occasionally. The steering column feels loose and rattles when turning and going over speed bumps between 0-15mph. The Goodyear tires are horrible on the truck. My fiance and I have both almost wrecked on several ocassions in light rain while traveling at below reasonable speeds for conditions. The rear tires will spin when taking off from a stop even with the weight of a 1500lb trailer on level ground just accelerating normally for the conditions. Lights will on the dash will flash on and off for no reason. I have not taken the truck in for service for the other listed problems because I need it 5 days a week for work and Chevy doesn’t do major work on weekends. I enjoy the truck, usually. It has a smooth ride and good towing power. But there are surely some kinks in the vehicle.

First time:Main computer failed.Second time:stalling, running rough, boggs down and makes loud noise,mis-fire in #5 & #6 cilander.A/C not working.NOT FIXED.third time: Everything same as second time and engine light now coming on.NOT FIXED.Fourth time:all lights on dash come on and all messages appearing on message board.NOT FIXED.After computer changed truck preformed unsatisfactory and is still unsatisfactory.All having to do with computer.Told it is a random problem that is hard to detect and may not ever be fixed.

eng. fuel injectors keep going out on duramax diesel. repairs are very costley . problems started at 77000 mi. 10100 mi & 11900mi . I transport rv trailers & itis getting imposable to make a living with this truck. I have put in three injectors, the problem is far from over because I have another one that is starting to smoke. Putting them in does not fix the problem. I want to know what GM is planning to do with this defect.

Constant wind noise from hood hinge flaps and top windshield seal at 50 and above. Also driver door seal squeals. I repaired the flapping noises myself after the dealer tried 6 times and said it was my bug deflector. The door seal was replaced after 6 trips and is worse now than then. I repaired this as well as I could. They replaced 1 of 3 seals. After 6 visits for my Goodyear tires (nothing found wrong again) they decide to replace them. It took 2 weeks to get tires and then they replaced 2. The trans is clunker and has computer software issues causing shifting problems and Dealer can not duplicate. The computer thinks it is ok so no codes will be stored. I also pointed out the GM TSB’s to them on this problem. I may as well go to the zoo for service at least I get to expect poor service from wild animals. I wrote the VP of GM and he responded to me and forwarded my letter to VP of Sales and Service. Went back for repairs and still have same problems and the new tires with 1000 miles are bad just like the others. $38,000 piece of junk with $3.00 hr monkeys repairing it. What a joke, they can have this truck back since there is nothing wrong with it. I was also refused service two times by my local dealer because I bought it else where. Service manager said: "You are not our loyal customer and if we decide to service you, you go behind our loyal customers, reguardless of order". I think he may be looking for other employment now that the VP called me to discuss my concerns, but that is still against the law and the GM contract. Think I am going to just get a horse and when it stops working just shoot it.

Center hub caps will not stay tight. Have had a “loosening” problem since new. Dealer provided a bag of new plastic nuts. On last trip the left front hub center cam off and ended up in the north rim of the grand canyon. Dealer installed a new center hub cap and another bag of nuts. Some of the new nuts wouldn’t tighten and had to be moved around to different locations to tighten. I believe the problem is due to the stainless over-lay spot welded to the steel wheel, thus limiting the thread contact with the lug nuts. The plastic nuts only grab the steel lug nut by 1 or 2 threads. My window sticker says “chrome style steel wheels”. This statement is mis-leading. They are a steel wheel with a stainless hub cap welded to the wheel and a plastic center hub with plastic nuts. The service manager was suppose to check on this problem but never heard back from him. please note: I am a mechanic. I know how to install these type of centers. I do not over tighten them and they are installed by hand. I noticed the problem when the truck was new and I drove it home. I waxed the wheels and noticed the loose centers. These could be dangerous to a pedestrian if one flew off struck them.

2003 chevrolet silverado with brake problems. consumer states that the vehicle is on its second set of rotors and third set of pads. he believes that the 2003 and 2004 chevy silverado should be included in the recall. *kb the rotors were rusting and falling apart. the consumer also stated there was a constant noise coming from the steering column. *jb

While starting up the vehicle srs light appeared on the dashboard and remained on. vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection., and the mechanic determined that the control module needed to be replaced, and replaced it. while the vehicle was parked in a garage the air bags deployed on their own. mechanic replaced the air bags, problem recurred. *ak

While routinely driving my 03 chev silverado truck, the brakes failed. when i was able to safely stop and move to a safe place, i looked under the vehicle and saw brake fluid leaking from one of the brake lines which had failed due to excessive corrosion. as a retired police officer, i have excellent driving skills which helped me to avoid a collision with another vehicle when the brakes failed!

Significant corrosion of the fuel (gasoline) lines causing leak and possible safety hazard (fire). several forums report brake and fuel line premature failure due to corrosion. gm not addressing this known problem.

Brake lines, gas line, transmission fluid lines all rusted/corroded beginning at under 50,000 miles. * had near accidents as the brake lines blew while driving on a highway and was decelerating in an attempt to come to a stop..pedal went to the floor, i continued on (foot off the gas) until the truck slowed down enough on it's own, shifted into low gear & was able to come to a stop and get towed. * shortly after brake line incident, the same thing with the gas line, rusted/corroded and leaked gasoline when ignition was on and pump was running... towed * a few ,months later, i was parking the truck and fluid started spewing from under the truck - after close examination i determined it was transmission fluid, the lines had rusted/corroded - again,towed. * rear bumper rotted out completely before hitting 35,000 miles- i had it replaced, now the wheels and side quarter panels and everything in between are also rotting out. * currently the dash lights/panel will intermittently begin to flash - the whole dash goes blank, lights off, then they come back on, while driving! **my mechanic recently told me after state inspection, that the frame is the next thing to go, it is rusting out more than expected for a vehicle of it's age/low mileage. personally, i feel that inferior products were used when the truck was manufactured only because i have another chevrolet product with twice the mileage and 6 years older with barely any rust/rot/corrosion.

Front brake lines rusted through and spilled brake fluid while moving at slow speed. had front brake lines replaced. six months or so later, rear brake lines rusted through and spilled brake fluid while moving at slow speed. had rear brake lines replaced. abs is now contaminated and is causing stop time delay, especially at high speed. almost crashed on several occasions where my heart dropped to my stomach. decided not to drive truck anymore until i can replace the entire brake system with rust free components.

While driving, the heater blower stopped working and i smelled burning plastic or insulation. i pulled over and figured out it was coming from under the dash. logically i pulled the bottom cover off from below the blower assy.(former mechanic). smell was coming from plug harness and relay. melted wire insulation and melted plastic from plug harness(obvious short). i was near an auto parts store and checked to see if they had this wiring plug assy. and they informed me that they did and this was an issue that gm had and there had been a safety recall on this. it's winter and i needed a defroster! roadside fix, but this could have been much worse. contacted gm and they informed me that this was not their problem because the vin number wasn't part of their recall. gm case # 8-174060432. not dropping this, this could have gotten worse.

Brake line rupture.

The front to rear brakes corroded to the point where they blew out when the brakes were applied while driving on the highway.

On october 22,2015 while driveing on interstate 75 the fuel pump stopped functioning and resulting in a near disasterous situation.results $751.81 repair cost plus tow. then one week later,october 29 2015 at wilmington pike and inertstate 675 red light my brake lines burst and i narrowly avoided a wreck. repair cost $870.17 .i was not noteafide of any recall. so be fair warning if i had known or been i would have fixed it

This is the second of three fatal collisions investigated this year by my office involving chevrolet pickups that caught fire after being involved in frontal collisions. this was an off set head on, passenger side to passenger side. passenger in pickup was pinned in vehicle due to crush and consumed by fire.

My husband was driving the vehicle at approximately 60 mph on a local highway when he needed to brake to slow down for a vehicle who turned on up ahead when the brake line blew. pedal immediately went soft. he barely avoided collision and had to pull off into a nearby church parking lot. now we are out the expense of having the brake lines replaced. the rust issue, which has been complained about in all of the others, is the same here that led to this. though it has high mileage, the truck has been very well taken care of as it is a regency edition silverado.

The gauge cluster is always drawing power. battery goes dead if i do not drive the vehical for one day.

Brake line burst and brake pedal went to floor. at only 15 mph i had some stopping power by pumping brake pedal and got the truck stopped. thankfully, i have a very long driveway and was still on my property. i was pulling a heavy trailer and do not want to imagine what would have happened with traffic and at a greater speed. i inspected the brake lines and noticed they were all badly corroded. i am having all brake lines replaced tomorrow. i see no recall notice and have since read about others who have had the same problem. i am 66 years old and have had one brake line failure many years ago on a 1963 plymouth with very high mileage. this truck has just over 50 thousand miles. i was shocked at the condition of these brake lines. without complete replacement of the lines i do not consider this vehicle safe to drive. *tr

I have had to replace the distributor cap and rotor bug often due to corrosion after less than 1000 miles. this is very dangerous. the dealership installed cover over the ac line and that had little effect. it is my belief that this is a manufacture flaw. *tr

My wife and i got into the vehicle to go somewhere and as we started to move i tried to stop and the brakes would not stop the vehicle. i applied the emergency brake in order to stop. i returned to my driveway using the emergency brake. i checked and found that i had no brake fluid. i got under my truck and found that my brake lines are corroded and one had a severe leak. i researched the internet and found that there have been multiple similar incidents where there have been crashes. i have talked with a chevrolet rep and i was told that they do not consider this a safety issue. although they know of this problem they do not plan a recall. someone evidently has to die before it becomes a safety issue. *tr

On january 20, 2015, the brakes on my chevrolet silverado failed. when i applied the brakes to make a normal turn, on a residential street around the corner from my house, the brake pedal went all the way down to the floor. i was extremely fortunate that no cars were coming the other way & i was able to maneuver the truck out of harms way until i came to a safe stop. i noticed a trail of liquid on the ground & also dripping from under my truck. the liquid coming from the truck was brake fluid. a later check proved the bake fluid well was empty. obviously the brake fluid that was in the reservoir was now on the ground causing the vehicle inoperable. well it was operable, it was all good to go. stopping the vehicle was another matter. thank goodness i was driving in a residential area when this incident occurred. imagine if this had happened on a busy interstate (like interstate 95) where some real damage could have occurred or perhaps worse death. *tr

There was a complete brake failure coming to a stop sign. fortunately was able to get the vehicle stopped using emergency brake. there was also no other vehicles at stop sign or at cross street. went through the intersection. there was little or no brake pressure and the brake pedal went straight to the floor. at the shop it was noted there was a complete brake line failure at the abs module near the driver door of all 6 rear brake lines. the brake lines all rusted through. the shop noted this was a common defect of the chevy silverados. this appears to be an issue especially in cold climates where salt and snow accumulates. this needs to be a safety recall to fix this defect. all 6 brake lines were replaced. *js

I was approaching a traffic light in town and when the brakes were applied the brake line broke and there were no brakes. i swerved to miss the car infront of me but hit her passenger side rear. she in turn hit the car in front of her. *tr

I depressed brake pedal to shift the truck from park, and the brake pedal went to the floor! pumping the brakes did no good. i looked underneath, and brake fluid was running down from under the driver's seat area. upon closer inspection, one of the brake lines coming out of the abs modules had sprung a leak at the point where it bends over the top of the frame rail. if this had occurred while driving, an accident is likely, as there was no brake, despite the dual master cylinder! all of the brake lines are severely corroded, especially where the oem factory formed bends are. the brake lines are actually at the point of crumbling in places. to counter any claims about severe corrosion environment causing the problem, contrast the brake lines to the fuel lines on this vehicle which have no to very minimal corrosion. i also own another 2003 gm vehicle with far more miles, and it also has very little brake line corrosion. i have owned both these vehicles from new, and the silverado has less miles, and less winter salt exposure than the other vehicle. i have also owned other vehicles for many more years and miles than this silverado, and have never experienced anything like the horrible crumbling of this obviously defective brake line material used on the silverado. please nhtsa, take some action on this obviously serious safety situation caused by defective manufacturer materials! *tr

Frame rust enough to void inspection. rust noticed within a year after purchase. vehicle now fails inspection. i have another older gm vehicle housed in the same place, driven in the same area with double the mileage and three years older without this issue. i feel it is design/materials issue. *js

Blower motor switch resistors, defective from factory. resistors get so hot they melt and melt the end off the factory wiring harness. the wires and blower motor are suppose to be protected by a fuse but the fuse never blows. replaced resistors in 2013 but it did not last 1 year and burned up again in 2014! gm has known about this problem for many years but does not care if the wires over heat and cause a fire. *tr

Truck colided with guard rail. bounced off, hit vehicle 1, then into vehicle 2 then stopped after hitting vehicle 3 a semi truck. all damage was done to front of the chevy silverado. at no time did the airbags deploy. silverado was determined to be totaled due to the excessive damage on the front. airbags should have deployed during one of the impacts. *js

I purchased a 2003 chevy silverado lt manufactured in nov 2002, for the past yr and a half the truck has been in and out of the shop numerous times for electrical problems, my outside temp and direction indicator located on the rear view, the heated seats, the remote entry have all stopped working and sometimes the stereo will come on and work properly but with no sound, constantly having to get a jump start because the battery was drained while parked. i have replaced the battery twice. after talking to several different technicians at different dealerships i found out that those items i just listed are controlled by the body control module or (bcm). also that it will draw power off of the battery. that is the same problem recalled on the other gm vehicles, why is the recall not being added to the chevy trucks as well. my truck was manufactured very close to the same time as the malibu's and other gm vehicles that are being recalled and i would like to know if my vehicle has the same part. *tr

On the listed date, i was driving my vehicle as described above. i attempted to apply the brakes in a curve when the pedal went straight to the floor and i ran my vehicle off the roadway causing minor damage to the vehicle. my greatest concern however, is the post accident research i conducted on the brake system of my vehicle. my research indicates that there have been thousands of owners who reported to gm that the same model of truck as mine had brake systems that prematurely reached failure. specifically, they rusted prematurely causing my brake system to completely leave my vehicle in a dangerous operational position. upon investigation of the lines, each of the 5 lines in the system was experiencing the same rust issues and needed to all be replaced. i feel it should be the responsibility of gm to replace my brake system via recall. *tr

The brake lines on this truck are so rusted so are the fuel lines i'm surprised even stops or that the fuel lines haven't burst yet i have abs light on and service brake system because everything is so rusted and now have a short somewhere so anytime you hit a bump warning light flashes and it starts dinging and warning lights flashes service brake system... there is no reason for this to be rusted like it does this vehicle is washed at least once a week it is in immaculate shape. *tr

2003 silverado started by itself while i was putting gas in . key was in ignition but was not turned on. it started in reduced power mode. i do not have a remote start installed on this vehicle. *tr

While driving down rte. 188 in seymour, ct (steep decline) a deer crossed in front on me causing me to apply the brakes very firmly. as the truck slowed, the pedal pressure suddenly disappeared and the pedal went all the way to the floor. no lights or warnings illuminated in the instrument cluster. as i approached the stop sign in front of me, i was unable to bring the vehicle to a stop. fortunately (as this is incredibly rare) there was no traffic in either direction, and i was able to continue through the intersection without event. it was only due to extremely good luck that there was no accident. the vehicle was undriveable from that point. *tr

While backing my truck out of my home driveway, i stepped on the brake and it went immediately to the floor. the brake warning light on the dash illuminated, a warning chime sounded, and the message center flashed an alert to "service brakes soon". i had almost no response at from the brakes; fortunately the street was level so i was able to quickly coast to a stop. i immediately pulled the truck back into the driveway and parked it. when i got out to investigate, i immediately noticed a small pool approximately a foot in diameter of brake fluid on the driveway surface just behind the driver's side front tire, along with a trail that lead back to the street. brake fluid was dripping from the lines at the frame where it makes the bend upward at the front edge of the cab. closer inspection with a flashlight revealed that all the brake lines are excessively rusted and one or more of them appears to have burst where the lines go over the frame rail into the engine compartment. all lines will have to be replaced before this vehicle is safe to drive again. this vehicle was purchased used (60k miles) in florida in 2006, moved to washington state (seattle area) in 2008, and then moved again to northern virginia in late 2009. it has had minimal exposure to road salt, ice or snow conditions in the time that i have owned it. *tr

2 problems. anti-lock brakes pulsate intermittently. engine 6.0l exhaust manifold bolts are broken. causing emissions codes to set and exhaust gases into cab. i have found that this a common problem for 1999 to 2007 v8 engines. gm said there is no recall or warranty for this problem. *tr

I was stopped on boat ramp and started to back up when brake pedal went all the way to the floor.we were very lucky to not launch boat and truck into river at the same time. we then had the truck towed to our local garage and the brake line was repaired. the mechanic told me that the brake line was rusted.this has happened twice now.the second time i was stopping at a red light and the pedal went straight to the floor . chevy says you don't lose complete braking but i would like to see the ceo have it happen to him. this problem will make me sell this truck .i will not be driving this vehicle again ..i hope the nhtsb will make chevy either address this problem or fix it before someone either gets seriously hurt or killed. *tr

While hard on the brakes to avoid a vehicle, my rear brake line burst, and i lost all brakes. luckily i was able to use the emergency brake to come to a stop. now i have a $400.00 bill to replace rusted brake lines, that should have never rusted in the first place. *tr

I was driving home from having dinner with friends. luckily for me and others on the road it was a late saturday evening during a beautiful florida summer. i was driving on ulmerton rd which is a 4 lane rd in pinellas county. i was driving at about 45 mph and the light turned red. i started to apply the brakes pretty softly as the light was some distance away. all of the sudden the brake pedal went to the floor and all the bells and whistles on the dash started going off. i realized i have no brakes. i start to panic and then decide i better try the emergency brake as i do not want to run the red light and get into a possible accident. i must emphasize the anger i felt at this moment as my wife usually drives this truck and there is no way she would have thought to use the emergency brake which is rather difficult to use in the first place in this truck as it is up and to the left a good ways. i used the emergency brake the rest of the way home. applying the brake and then pulling the release which is not an easy task to do. my brake lines were so rusted they exploded doing 45 mph. this truck was purchased brand new by my father and was given to me when he passed away. he had free car washes at the dealership he bought it from and had the truck washed constantly. i am furious that this $30,000+ vehicle is completely rusting on the undercarriage. in my opinion gm sold us a lemon. they chose to put profit before the safety of its customers and if my wife was driving this vehicle during rush hour as this vehicle is used for daily driving to and from work could have been seriously injured or worse killed because of this not to mention the safety of any innocent people in her way. this report is being reported 2 years after the incident because i did not know this site existed and i just saw the same complaint on a forum which mentioned this site. *tr

While on my way to work monday morning the brake pedal went right to the floor. i was able to get the truck back to the house to inspect the problem. i found that the brake lines were completely rotted out. thank god i was only a few miles from the house. i live in a rural area with steep and winding mountain roads and have to drive the interstate to get to work, thank god it didn't happen there. it happened with no warning, a few people i know have experienced the same problem with their chevy pickups. the steel brake lines are a bad design, i live in pa. where the brake lines are subject to salt they should be stainless steel. i'm sure someone is going to get killed if this problem is not resolved. *tr

Chevrolet silverado lt 3500 4wd crew cab we were on the way to go on a road trip and had my trailer hooked up to the truck. when i got out on my driveway the brake pedal went all the way to the bottom and it was no brakes left. it was no warning before and it was no brakes at all on the truck. all the brake lines were rusty and left front was broken. we replaced all the lines on the truck before we could drive it again.total cost $ 665 if this would have happened on the highway i probably had caused an accident.this time we were lucky. *tr

While changing my oil i noticed excessive rust on the brake fluid lines running from the front of the truck to the electronic brake module under the truck (along to frame rail). i began to search for pre-bend replacements and found several reports of issues with chevrolet vehicles having this problem. i want to ensure the vehicle is safe to drive but i am unable to find exact replacement brake fluid lines. it appears that people are replacing them with straight stock brake lines and getting the correct shape and length is difficult. these things appear to be hard to replace. i want to replace these to ensure the truck is safe to drive but even gm does not appear to provide a direct replacement. *tr

Recently, my vehicle has had a hard time starting. i took my vehicle to the local chevrolet dealership to have it inspected/diagnosed. i was informed that my fuel pump/filter combo as well as all the injectors needed to be replaced and would cost me just under $6000.00 for the repair. it has come to my attention today after researching that this is and has been a known issue to the point that gm issued a service bulletin to repair this problem and modified the bulletin to extend the time frame and/or total mileage, but that time extension has expired before my vehicle developed the same issue that the bulletin addresses. with such a wide spread problem such as the nature of this magnitude, why does this not fall under a mandatory recall from nhtsa? i use my vehicle for only weekend recreation, and as such, i only have 42k miles on my vehicle, and for an engine that i paid a premium for, i think that it is just plain wrong to expect to pay such an outrageous bill for an engine that is advertised as a 'tough, long-lasting engine'. nhtsa should force gm to address this issue, because there are many like me out there, and i truly believe that is a safety issue for the people like me that own these vehicles. *tr

My truck has only been in pennsylvania for 4 years after being in virginia since new. i was driving down a hill and my pedal went to the floor with the brake action light going off. inspection of brake system found that the rear brake line had rusted through. i replaced all the brake lines and found several sections of the brake line severely corroded almost to the point of failure. *tr

I entered my 2003 model year chevy silverado 2500 hd truck on april 19, 2013 at my residence. i started the vehicle and pressed on the brake pedal to put the automatic transmission into drive. upon pressing the brake pedal, it immediately went completely to the floorboard and no brake stopping action was apparent. it is imperative to recognize that i routinely apply the manual parking brake when i park the truck, so in this instance when the brakes severely malfunctioned the truck was prevented from moving forward as the vehicle went into drive. i placed the truck back into park and pressed the brake pedal numerous times attempting to recover my vehicle brakes, to no avail. it should be noted that i was parked facing a downward angle when i experienced this terrible brake failure. and had i not employed the parking brake in advance there surely would have been a collision resulting in personal injury and property damage. after my attempts to recover my truck brakes proved futile, i discovered a large puddle of brake fluid on the ground directly under my driver's side compartment. it was determined all steel brake lines were severely rusted and the two (2) brake lines running from the truck's master cylinder to the abs module had a number of rust deterioration holes in the steel lines rendering the truck unusable and unsafe. my truck has only 36,095 miles on it . i can not comprehend how this "latent defect" in the 2003 year chevy silverado trucks brake systems could go unrecognized by the manufacturer and a recall not initiated and corrective action not taken. an immediate recall is warranted and adequate repair compensation to me in particular is certainly justified, along with all others who have experienced this same "latent defect". the manufacturer must take immediate action to correct this dangerous situation and provide me compensation. *tr

I have read in the internet that this problem is a widespread problems. it is sort of ridiculous to take off a battery to clean it . put back on and nothing but hot air on passenger. my wife is pretty upset about this, she will not even drive in my truck anymore. what a crying shame! *tr

While inspecting fluid levels, i noticed the brake lines were severely rusted. i continued to inspect the lines to the rear of the truck, they too were severely rusted. while doing an online search i discovered many owners had the same issue. so now i had a decision to make, continue driving the truck until there was a failure or arrange for repairs, incurring an expense that could have been avoided if gm had installed better quality lines. truck is now at a local gm dealer being repaired. gm needs to step up and make things right !!!! *tr

Hooked up a trailer and headed out the driveway. went to brake at driveway/road intersection, pedal went almost to the floor. i pumped the brake furiously till pedal was all the way down. there was no braking. i switched to 4 wheel drive, steered to the curb and shut off the key. had it towed to repair shop where it was discovered all brake lines were heavily rusted and one had rusted through and fluid had bled out. all lines had to be replaced. cost was $985.80. *tr

While slowing down just prior to coming to a complete stop, the brake pedal went to the floor and the warning light/signal came on. upon inspection of the vehicle, brake fluid was seen below and to the front of the drivers side floorboard. when trying to move the vehicle at low speed (idle) to a safe location, i had absolutely no brakes. chevy's claim that the "other half" of the brake system would function with increased stopping distances is not true in my case. the vehicle was not repairable on the side of the road and was towed to the local chevy dealership in corpus christi texas (allen samuels chevrolet, 361-884-5234). upon diagnosis, victor landa (service advisor) informed me that the brake line failed due to rust/corrosion. furthermore, he stated that this a pretty common problem due to the salty environment (gulf coast of texas) and that he has a mechanic that is getting really good at making replacement lines. upon inspection, [xxx] indicated that all the brake lines on my vehicle showed excessive corrosion and suggested replacing them all for safety along with the "control valve". all the lines were constructed by the mechanic at a cost of repair exceeding $1800.00. the vehicle has only been on the beach less than 8 times total in its life and has been thoroughly washed after each visit. it appears, based on internet research and discussions with staff at allen samuels chevrolet, that this is a common problem. so common that the nhtsa has opened an engineering analysis on the premature brake line failure. i hope that this issue is resolved by issuing a recall so that undue repair costs are not passed on to the consumer for "faulty" brake equipment. more importantly, i hope this is resolved prior to any consumers losing their life. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

After noticing a gas leak, i asked my father to drive my truck to the dealership for repair. when he put the truck into reverse he had no brakes and had to use the emergency brake before rolling into my mother's car behind him. upon inspection by the dealership, all of my brake lines and gas lines were badly rusted and had to be replaced. upon research i found this problem quite widespread and expensive, not to mention the critical safety issues involved. i do want to know that chevrolet/gm is concerned about our safety and is addressing this problem.

Applied brakes to slow down to make a turn onto another road, lost complete brake pressure to later find steel brake line along driver's side frame rail had burst and it was not that corroded. i would have hated to see what happens if this occurs at a higher speed or even worse while towing a trailer. vehicle went from full brakes to an almost total loss. even though brakes still function, it would be extremely dangerous to drive. *tr

Truck was pulling partially loaded trailer entered curve in road going downhill & when brakes were applied pedal went to floor with obviously no rear breaks,truck nosedived when applied at bottom of pedal, truck & trailer started to jacknife had to get off brakes and steer my way out of trouble & apply only lightly until entering straight section of road. this made for an extremely intense ride down the hill. any hairpin turns or stopped traffic in front would have resulted in a serious accident. stopped & pulled off road to see what had happened and brake fluid was running all over the bottom of the drivers side frame rail. closer inspection reveals obvious burst brake line but without removing inner fender or wiring harness i can not actually see the rupture and it may be concealed by the clips attaching the line to the frame. oddly the lines have some rust but nothing which looks like it is so severe to have allowed a rupture. the attaching hardware may be allowing some movement in the lines allowing additional rust to take hold. i bought this truck new in 2003 in october i think and one thing about it that was different than the two previous new chevy trucks i bought was the rear brakes never seemed to apply as hard as they should and nothing even close as the 2000 tahoe or the 1994 silverado. since the brake lines seem to burst in front of the abs system it could be that the abs system is partially blocking the flow creating a higher than normal line pressure between the master cylinder and the abs system. *tr

While being serviced, my mechanic observed significant rust on fuel lines, transmission and brake lines underneath my truck, as well as in the engine compartment. no recall has been issued. lines are not leaking as of the date of this report. *tr

I was driving our 2003 chevy silverado in a residential area at speeds of no more than 40 mph. i braked at a stop sign and noticed that the brakes went way down to the floor and yet the truck wasn't stopping. when i applied even more pressure (at this point i was up against the steering wheel and practically standing upright!) the "service brake system" warning light suddenly popped on with a ringing bell. i was less than two miles from home, so i continued my drive, downshifting to 1st as i approached a stop sign. at a red light, i shifted into park to avoid rolling into traffic. after returning home, i noticed a line of fluid drips on the driveway. i put a dish under the area that seemed to be leaking (under the driver's side door) and my husband later confirmed that it was brake fluid and that a line had ruptured. two separate repair shops confirmed that five brake lines had rusted out and one had ruptured. we paid over $1000 to replace parts that would not have rusted out if they had been made with a rust-proof material rather than steel. if this brake line rupture had occurred one day earlier, the scenario could have been much uglier: i had been driving to the beach, at highway speeds, with my two young daughters as passengers. our silverado has about 74k miles on it and has been nothing but a headache with parts rusting out before their time. *tr .. updated 08-30-12 *bf

Brakes went to floor when descending hill to house. unable to stop my wife down shifted to first gear to try to slow truck down but still could not get it to slow down. end of road is cul-da-sec (luck it was early morning and kids weren't out playing yet) with a walking trail to woods at the end. she figured that was best way to slow it down so aimed towards trail. after entering the woods 75 feet the truck finally came to a stop. luckily my wife was not hurt and also the truck was not damaged, but now my wife is afraid to use the truck. mechanic told me brake and fuel lines are no longer stainless steel. who's bright idea was it at gm to cut cost by making the brake and fuel lines not be stainless steel. i have never heard of lines not being stainless and shame on any safety industry personal that decided this was ok. i would gladly pay the extra $20 on truck cost to have it stainless. here in the new england area they use salt on the roads during the winter and even if i rinsed off the truck every day it would still corrode out the lines. gm got luck with this one that no one was hurt, they offer recalls for other items which are wasteful, but for something like this they don't. i have been a gm owner for a long time but if gm is going to take risks with me and my families life, this maybe the last gm product i own. *tr

Backing boat trailer on boat ramp, summitt lake, tekamah, ne. sudden brake failure (pedal went to floor) with no warning or warning light. managed to get truck into drive, and pull out before i went in the water. the brakeline under the drivers side door had rusted through, and there were no brakes working. had the truck taken to blair, ne, and repaired at private shop. before repair, i contacted the service manager at dillon chevrolet in blair to ask if covered, was informed no warranty was available despite low miles, and cost of repair would be approx $1000 to $1500 depending on amount of corrosion present. the independent garage repaired for ~$800. there are thousands of complaints noted on various internet web sites, and i am aware of current investigation due to other catastrophic failures. fortunately, there was no accident. had i been on the highway when the brakes failed, i can only imagine that the outcome might have been different. *tr

On april 19, 2012, the chevrolet dealership advised me that two or three of my 2003 chevrolet silverado diesel fuel injectors, part# 97729095, needed to be replaced and recommended all eight fuel injectors should be replaced at a cost of $5,260,18. i asked if this repair was covered by chevrolet and the dealer representative said my truck did not qualify because the time limit had expired. he said if the vehicles fuel injectors had failed within the first 200,000 miles or within the first seven years they would have replaced the fuel injectors at no cost. on that date, april 19, 2012 my vehicle had 36,273 miles and was 9 years old, i asked why the dealership hadn't notified me of this problem and they said it was not their responsibility to notify me and refused to replace/repair the defective fuel injectors. *tr

I have several broken bolts on my exhaust manifolds. my check engine light goes on and off for emissions related codes. i will not be able to pass a smog test unless this is fixed. several auto shops want about $1,000 to fix this. its an ongoing problem and is known by chevy/gm and yet they will do nothing to help or fix it. this should be recalled immediately! *tr

On september 4, 2011, i experienced a sudden brake failure while attempting to stop at an intersection. also, i was accompanied in the vehicle by 10 month old daughter. i had to steer my vehicle away from oncoming traffic as i was unable to stop at the intersection due to the lack of effective brake assistance. there was no prior warning or dash illumination to indicate that there was a brake issue. thankfully, a tragic accident involving injury or death was avoided. on september 6, 2011, i contacted chevrolet customer service dept in regards to this matter. i informed customer service of the brake line issue. at this time i was assigned a case number (71984021797) and was advised to have a diagnostic service conducted by a local chevrolet service garage. on september 7, 2011, a local chevrolet dealership performed the diagnostic check on my truck and the results of the inspection were relayed to chevrolet customer service dept. later that day, i spoke with customer service and i was informed that the inspection revealed that all brake lines were rotted and corroded. she further stated the truck was in good condition with low mileage and that would make it an excellent case for repair assistance. she forwarded this information to a higher dept. and that i would be contacted the following day. on september 8, 2011, i was contacted by customer service . they informed that chevrolet determined that the truck was out of warranty and no action will be taken. she further stated that brake lines are a wear item. i reminded her that brake lines are not a wear item and they don’t fall within the category of tires, rotors, and brake pads. i than asked to speak with a supervisor so i could better understand the basis of the decision to not provide repair assistance. at this point, customer service laughed at me and said they would tell me the same thing.

While idling at a red light the smell of exhaust fumes became prevalent inside the passenger cabin. upon inspection of the exhaust system it was determined 5 of the exhaust manifold bolts had prematurely failed allowing exhaust gas to escape from the engine into the engine compartment and into the passenger cabin. the vehicle is currently used sparingly where family members or friends are not allowed to ride in the truck until the exhaust manifolds are repaired. *tr

Purchased 2 new(?) wrangler st tires from dealer on 11/09/2005 but date code on tire was 2504 to match original 2 still in good shape. breaks redone front end alignment performed. front end of truck still vibrated at higher speeds on level road. dealer tried numerous times to identify cause over 2-3 years. balanced and rebalanced the tires. did high speed test in shop. suspected tires, but could not identify exact problem with tires. on 30 oct. 2010 while traveling @ 70mph on clear day on straight interstate road, front passenger tire exploded. road was clear, nothing was struck by tire, outside temp was about 73 degrees f. tire was shredded to bits and only had about 31k miles on it. plenty of tread and no unusual wear patterns. took tire to dealer and replaced both front tires with coopers and now there is no vibration in the front coming from the tires. *tr

2003 chevrolet silverado - abs activation during low speed breaking that led to increased stopping distances, intermittent at first but over 3 to 4 months increased to the point that it nearly resulted in an accident. brought the vehicle to an authorized chevrolet dealer for repair, diagnosed that the abs sensors were corroded and after testing, found that the "lifting sensor causing different wave lengths at speeds below 5mph". the repair consisted of cleaning the rust build up under and around the sensors and replacement of both sensors. the repair cost $430.00. told by the service advisor that this was a common problem in this model and year and advised to file a claim with gm for reimbursement of cost as this repair was not as a result of accident or negligence on the part of the owner. this repair is similar to the remedy mandated for the exact same condition under recall notice 05v379000 for chevrolet silverados, model years 1999-2002. the claim for reimbursement filed with gm/chevrolet was summarily rejected with the stated reason that the vehicle is out of warranty period. even when apprised that there is a recall in place for the same condition on vehicles one model year older, chevrolet refused to negotiate this claim. i then filed a claim with the bbb as recommended in my vehicle's owners manual and though helpful could not assist stating that vehicle is out of manufacturer's warranty period. looking for help in recouping repair cost for damage that was as a result of flawed design from a corporation that refuses to listen to consumers complaints and instead throws up a firewall to deny claims in the hopes of disheartening the claimant until they give up. *tr

I have an 03 chevy silverado. my speedometer works intermittently if at all. when it does work it is usually off by a good bit (high and low). it has never been in an accident and is a one owner. i googled "silverado speedometer bad" and found hundreds of similar complaints as mine. it is a regularly occurring problem for me and many others as well. dealer says it is a $500 repair. i now rely on my gps which has a speedometer feature on it. *tr

There was absolutely no warning that my brakes were going to fail! i had my two children with me and was approaching an insection. i went to apply my brakes and nothing happened. i was unable to stop. luckily, i coasted through the intersection and was not involved in a collision. i tried to stop the truck by putting it into park, which was a mistake, this did not stop the truck so i immediately put the truck back in drive. i then stepped on the emergency brake which stopped the truck. at this time, i was stopped in the middle of the road so i decided to release the brake and coast over to a safe location to ensure the safety of my children. as the truck stayed on the side of the road, i again pushed the brake peddle to discover brake fluid shooting out from truck. when the truckwas lifted onto the tow truck i was able to see the brake line had a large hole, as if it had been blown out. this was then confirmed by my mechanic. all the brake lines need to be replaced because they are all extremely rusted and i run the risk of another brake failure. i have contacted the dealership, but they have told me this will be my own expense. the truck is only 7 years old. *tr

In-dash gear selector light is inoperable. light stopped burning for no reason and during the day time can not see what gear the vehicle is currently in. there is a possibility that vehicle could not be in park and could roll away from vehicle operator when it was thought to be in a parked position. to fix the light one large part that covers multiple dash components is replaced not just a single component and this part costs hundreds of dollars even if other components are working fine. this component also has to be installed by a dealership since it covers the odometer. *tr

On 4-6-10, the brakes of my 2003 chevrolet silverado pick-up truck with 55,031 miles failed without warning. the truck was stopped at the time with the brake pedal depressed. the truck was in drive gear. the brake pedal suddenly went to the floorboard and braking ability was gone. the truck began to roll, but did stop on the level terrain. no injuries resulted. on 4-7-10, the repairing mechanic reported all brake lines were excessively corroded and rusted, and one of the lines had broken open. all lines were replaced. i will attempt to retrieve the replaced brake lines from the repair garage for your use. please advise me accordingly. my repair bill was $475.00, paid on 4-8-10, by personal check. the speedometer of this vehicle operates erratically and has ceased to operate. *tr

After perusing excessive rust to under-carriage of 2003 silverado, researched other complaints and found numerous from all over the country. this led me to believe that complete brake failure was related to rust problems. entire left brake line had to be replaced due to rust-through. actual rust-through of brake line was not reported to gm as at the time i saw no correlation to what later became a rust through problem of bumpers and cargo body. this was experienced after rust-through warranty had expired. my concern is with the rusting of brake lines and possible injury and even death when complete brake failure is experienced. if this has no relevance to other rust problems with the chevy silverado from 2002 until 2009 then disregard this complaint. *tr

Bought 2003 silverado 3500 4x4 used in 2006. it had 125,000 miles and ran great. in october 2006, the speedometer started reading inaccurately the oil and battery charge gauge are not accurate either. i consider this a safety issue. i received a letter stating, the instrument panel may be defective. the problem i have is the mileage. it is over the maximum allowed to replace the cluster. i have over 200,000 miles on my truck. the truck runs great and i would not think twice about taking long trips(over 2,000 miles) as i do because of my work. i don't think there should be a mileage limit at all. there is clearly a major problem with the cluster. i think there needs to be a recall period, not just a letter stating there is just a problem. please look into this again. thanks d.h *tr

Had fuel in oil new injectors replaced and 5000 miles later had to replace fuel injector pump leaking on bottom. now truck lose fuel from filter and has to be hand pumped to start truck can sat for days and be ok or may sat for just couple hours lose fuel pressure. have also had to have steering pump replaced. *tr

In december of 2007 my 2003 chevrolet extended cap silverado truck's speedometer started jumping and getting stuck; it gave inaccurate speed while driving and while parked. jan 08-an auto repair service charged me $108.98 for a speed sensor, $75.74 for a connector, and because of the time span to fix, $86.95 for a new battery gone dead. the speedometer continued to jump and get stuck, but i was unable to pay to get speedometer replaced. by nov 08 ? symptoms got worse. while driving on the interstate, at first got stuck at 85mph when going 60, then it climbed to 120mph, then it went past 120mph and is now permanently stuck on "r" on the drive gear panel (straight down). my warranty is expired and i cannot afford to fix the problem. *tr

The daytime running lights have failed due to what appears to be the overheating of the lamp sockets. when you go to replace the lamp' the sockets appears to be burnt and brittle and are missing the little metal tabs used to make contact with the lamp base. you cant replace the lamp. therefore i only have 1 daytime running light and am worried about a possible fire hazard with the other one. the one that works looks like it's not far from failing and very soon wont be working either. the more i see the amount of gm vehicles (trucks, silverado, tahoe, trailblazer, sierra, yukon & envoy's) without two daytime running lights, i really do wonder if gm has a real problem. i see several each and every day without one or both. i have spoke to other owners and they have the same problem with one or both of them. thank you for your time. *tr

I am an experienced cpst in baton rouge louisiana. on 7-30-08 i assisted a mother with the installation of a new britax marathon (camo pattern cover) using the latch system. mother indicated she had just received the seat and it had been back-ordered for some time. when i pulled back the seat cover to access the stored latch attachments....i noted that the attachments were stored in a manner that might lead to misuse. the attachments were routed to the inside of the harness before being placed in the recessed storage compartment (in the shell toward the back of the seat). the problem....unless a parent lifts the seat cover all the way to visualize the ? misrouting of the stored connectors ...entanglement of the harness could easily occur when the attachments are removed from the storage compartment and pulled through the rf belt path path openings in the shell. i have contacted the client to ask for batch number and serial # on the product but the home phone seems connected to a fax. information i do have: britax marathon model # e9l0668 mfg 07/09/2008 fabric cover...camo pattern i did speak with a britax representative (chris) on 8-6-08 to report my concerns. i gave him the model # and mfg date. he did not request any identifying information or contact information from me for follow-up. i am always somewhat concerned when no follow-up name / number is requested on a concern i have registered with a manufacturer. On january 5, 2008 i arrived home at 11:30 pm and parked my truck in the garage attached to my house. i went to bed and at around 2:00 am i smelt smoke. i walked through the house checking rooms, when i got to the screen door to the garage the handle was hot. i then went out my front door and called 911. the truck was a loss and part of my garage. in less then 11 months this is the 2nd chevrolet/silverado that i have owned that has burnt. *tr

Beginning at around 80,000 miles my speedometer stopped reporting my speed correctly. it will stay at 0 mph or 30 mph then after turning off the vehicle a few times it would reset. it didn't happen again until a couple of months later. but it only happened intermittently with no way to diagnose the problem. today (85,000miles) i was driving on the interstate and my speed stopped at 30 mph and wouldn't go to zero. i stopped tried to get it to reset and then it stuck at 80mph. i was not going that fast. now it is not reading my speed correctly at all. it will either stay at 30, or it says i'm going 20 when i know i am going at least 60. this a definite safety issue. diagnostics don't seem to locate the problem. *tr

Low speed activation of abs system for no reason. this has caused a couple parked car incidents and a couple of parking lot stop strip incidents. i am told by a very good dealership in dryden ny that this is the same abs system that is recalled on 1999 - 2002 model year silverado's for the very same issue. will it take a death for gm to step up to their problem? the entered date only reflects today, there have been other incidents. *tr

Speedometer was fluttering and sticking since purchase of this vehicle, particularly in cold weather. typically, after it warmed up, the speedometer would become somewhat functional again. through discussions with gm dealership, it was discovered that a service bulletin and letters of notification have been sent out to warn owners of this problem. this web site shows complaints of this problem dating back to dec of 2005. a 70,000 mile limit has been set for gm to cover repairs. my speedometer finally became totally inoperable at 105,000 miles, and i took it to the dealership for repairs. a month later, i see this notice. how can gm set a mileage limit on safety? this should be a total recall! at $500. to fix, most operators are obviously like me. you fix the things on your vehicle as you can afford to or if it makes the vehicle totally inoperable. i put over 20,000 miles a year on my truck. like an above owner stated, why am i being penalized for driving more than 10k miles a year? why am i being penalized for using this truck on long hauls. it has been a great truck, and i have very few other complaints. however, gm knows that they put a defective and unsafe and faulty instrument cluster in these trucks. now they want us, their consumers to pay for it? please nhtsa, this issue needs to be turned into a recall. *tr

I am the owner of a 2003 chevrolet silverado 2500 truck. approximately one month after the truck was purchased, it was being driven at about 45 mph and began to lose power while being driven. pushing on the accelerator made no change. the truck was taken to the dealership from where it was purchased, they tested the truck and reported no problem found. this problem has continued with the truck since that time. the truck has been in service on 4 different occasions, and the dealership reports that they have fixed the problem by replacing the wiring harness, replacing broken wires, replacing wiring that is broken inside insulation etc. this has not resolved the problem to date. the most recent incident occurred when the assistant service manager from the dealership took the truck out for a test drive (for a total of 120 miles), and he reported that the truck never lost power. i picked up the truck and drove it home and later that evening was driving the truck at approximately 45 miles per hour, when the truck began to lose power. several times when this has occurred, i have narrowly avoided being hit by other vehicles on the road because the truck loses all power within 20 seconds. *tr

There hasn't been an accident or any injury (yet) but steering related issues concern me and i don't know what could happen if left too long. the steering column makes thumping and chattering noises. this will be the third time it needs to be repaired, first at 35k, gm replaced under warranty, second at 51k, the dealer just removed some steering shaft and greased it, now it's doing it again at 65k. i haven't had it fixed yet, i don't drive it everyday, but i'm willing to bet the dealer will want to replace it this time. *tr

The anti-lock brakes on my 2003 chevy silverado with 19,000 miles on it were activating when stopping in normal conditions resulting in the loss of braking power. the first few times the problem happened, it almost resulted in rear ending the vehicle in front of me. the problem was corrected by replacing the front wheel bearings. gm refused to pay for the repair in spite of well documented problems. *jb

If it rains and wipers are used wipers will not turn off unless fuse is pulled. water gets into wiper module and cause short circuit., which depending on the occurrence and weather situation, driver visibility could be reduced, which could result in a crash. *jb

Had to replace a flexplat twice on 2003 chevrolet 1500hd (4x4). first one at 43,000 miles, the second one was at 78,000 miles. chevrolet would not help on either one. they also said they had no problems with it but the transmission shop found a service bulletin stating to use a new spacer if you do have problems. *tr

Right front wheel bearing had to be replaced at 49,000 miles-was so bad the wheel almost fell off according to mechanic that repaired for me. *jb

2003 chevrolet truck silverado 1500. rear brake rotors were replaced by chevrolet service garage at 15000 miles and again needed the disc rotors again at 21000 miles. the disc rotors are flaking off badly leaving a rough rust surface. also the abs produces a rumble and brake pedal pushes back just before coming to a complete stop causing the vehicle to travel several feet farther before the stop. my friend has the same problem with his 2003 chevrolet which he had converted so he can drive because of severe back damage because of a falling accident. this problem should result in a recall because of this problem and also the brake lines leading to back and front brakes are very rusted and could burst at any time causing the truck to crash causing injury and death. this problem has gone on for several years. i had the same on my other 1997 chevrolet silverado. this condition needs correction, why not now? *jb

Whole driving down the highway going 70 mph, my speedometer stuck at 70, then started going up until it topped out. i panicked and pulled off to the side of the highway. when i shut the truck off the speedometer stopped going down at 65 mph. i had to start and stop the engine repeatedly and the speedometer went down in 5 mph intervals. i've heard from several people that have had the same problem and it cost them between $350 and $450. i cannot afford this so when it does happen i have to pull off to the side off the road and start and stop the car until it resets. *jb

The rear brakes are prematurely wearing out and have been replaced three times with less than 40,000 miles. my abs sensors had to be replaced also. chevrolet is obviously aware of the design flaws of these type of vehicles, based on the number of online complaints i have read regarding the disc brake system of 2002-2004 pickup trucks. chevrolet went back to drum brakes on the rear for 06 due to the problems, but they will not recall or warranty any of the problems. *jb

I have a 2003 chevrolet silverado 1500 hd with a speedometer that works erratically. it seems that the speedometer selects a random "offset" between 0-65 mph and then operates linearly with that offset until at some random time it chooses a new offset. for example, the speedometer may say 50 mph when i'm stopped, then 110 mph when i'm doing 60 mph (verified by portable gps). then the next time i drive the truck the offset has changed to 20 mph. or while i'm driving the offset may change. i've discovered via the internet that numerous silverado owners have experienced this problem and dealers want about $500 to repair. this is a safety issue as i cannot be certain at what speed i'm driving.*jb

Reduced engine power message and drops into "limp mode", there is no problem with engine overheating. the computer give a code 1516 "drive by wire" sensor calibration problem. dealer indicated "yellow" wire broken on some vehicles others have to replace the throttle sensor. danger is on loose of power in traffic, instead of a message to check the engine. *nm

In september 2003, i purchased a2003 chevrolet silverado z71. on february 6, 2005, i had to have a "lube pack" replaced on the steering column. everytime i turned the steering wheel, a loud noise was heard. on september 26, 2005, i had to have the "lube pack" replaced again, for the same reason. i took the vehicle in to the dealer again several months ago and i complained about the same noise. he told me, after checking it, that it would be best if i waited a little longer, because gm would only replace the "lub pack" one more time at their cost. after searching for similar problems on the web site, i see i am not the only person having this problem; many other purchasers of gm trucks are having the problem and it has been occurring since 1999. i was under the impression that part of nhts's job was to investigate and see that corrective action was taken so that the safety of drivers and passengers was insured. it also appears that no one, especially nhts, knows whether this steering problem constitutes a dangerous condition. i realize that a recall of vehicles to fix the problem would be most expensive for gm, which is having financial problems at this time, but gm is responsible for doing nothing about a problem that could be a serious one, even if just one life is lost because of it. *nm

2003 chevrolet silverado hd, every year since i have had this truck, i had to have the steering gear box shaft sector lubed and once replaced. just had this done again two days ago. this is an irritating problem since when it is going bad or needs lubed, it has a clunking noise in the front end and don't know whether this is a safety factor or not. so far i have been lucky and not had to pay for the repair but have been told that if it happens over a year after last repair, i will be responsible. this is a factory defect and i don't believe anyone should have to pay to have it done. i have had other chevy's and other makes of trucks and have never had this problem. *jb

Took vehicle in for routine oil change @ approx. 36,000 miles. asked service technician to examine brakes for wear. technician stated that the front disc brakes were fine, however, the rear rotors were flaking and rusted. rear rotors and pads needed to be replaced. technician stated that this seemed to be a frequent problem with chevrolet trucks. he also stated that this was not typical wear based on his experience, particularly at such a low mileage. *jb

Front and back rotors need replaced, even though vehicle has low mileage, due to rusting rotors. this creates an unforeseen expense as well as hazardous conditions that may cause brake failure. *jb

Anyone had their chevy truck fuel pump replaced? apparently this is a default on lots of 2000 and later gm suv's & trucks, a quick survey of people i know and their contacts has revealed that this is a common occurrence (4 confirmed). my 2003 truck (45k miles) is sitting in a dealership waiting for me to authorize +$1,000 in repairs (@10% of the value of the truck). there is a recall for tahoe's & suburbans etc. regarding this issue. i want to escalate this issue and make it a recall item. a fuel pump that fails to deliver enough fuel to an engine will lean it out and eventually kill the motor, making this a larger financial and hazardous issue. please let the nhtsa know if this has happened to you. if it happened to an associate of yours, please have them email the ntsb directly. on craigslist. *jb

We all need to contact gm at www.chevrolet.com and complain. i purchased my 2003 chevy 2500 hd in nov. 2005. it had 32000 miles on it. the warranty ran out at 36000 and when i hit 38000 miles the problems started. the electrical system started acting up. i had went to leave and everything was dead no power at all. i would jump it and then it was fine for the first couple of times. the last time i jumped it, it cranked but i had no power it wouldn't move in drive or reverse and all the gauges went crazy. i disconnected the battery waited a minute and reconnected it and everything was working fine again. a week later the speed odometer went crazy and wouldn't go back to zero. now starting a few weeks ago the drive train is making a loud clanking noise and the rear wheels are wanting to lock up when i try to start off. these problems don't occur every time, but the drive train noise is getting worse from all the feedback i see on this web site i feel i would waste my time contacting gm. all of us chevy owners with problems needs to contact gm every day about our $30,000 and $40,000 dollar hunk of scrap metal. i hope mine will burn and i will not ever buy another chevrolet product again. here is there web site www.chevrolet.com. i have been calling the phone # on the web site, but it just stops ringing. you can send them e-mails and letters. *jb

I brought my 2003 chevrolet truck in for an annual inspection and they informed me that the rear brakes (rotors, pads and emergency brake pads) needed to be replaced. the truck has 35,000 miles on it and the rear rotors are heavily rusted and are crumbling away. the disc brake pads are also completely worn out. there was no accident but i believe this is a significant safety issue and is the result of defective parts on these vehicles. i have seen many other comments on the internet from other silverado owners indicating that they have the same problem. i believe that chevrolet should recall these rotors and pads and correct the problem before there are serious accidents from failing brakes. *nm

For what appears to be no reason at all, the speedometer needle will go 'ballistic', registering higher than traveling speed, and occasionally even pegging out. "over a period of time, it will then drop back to normal operation. this phenomenon will occur in warm or cool temperatures, within 5 miles of starting, or well into a longer distance of travel. upon inquiry at several dealerships (i am a full-time driver and travel a lot), i have heard various reasons for this occurrence, the most prominent having to do with the cluster in the dash, and the 'cure' depends upon the person to whom i am speaking. at one dealership, i was told parts were on backorder for 7 weeks. at another i was told i would have to park the truck and wait for a third-party repair service to do that work. i would be unable to move the vehicle while waiting, as the mileage would have to be re-programmed into the repaired cluster. waiting time for that was estimated at 4-6 weeks! (as stated, i rv full time, and this is my only means of transportation.) customer service at gm gives the impression that ours' is an isolated situation (explain that 7-week backorder at the dealership to me again!), and therefore must be of little consequence to them! i am concerned from the safety standpoint, as it is impossible to know what one's speed is. (going too slowly can be as dangerous as going to fast--i fear being rear-ended as much as anything!) there must be more folks out there who have not complained, to account for the lengthy wait involved in getting a solution to the problem. please help. *nm

Was driving down the freeway and my speedometer was showing that i was slowing down. my speedometer will work for a short period of time then it will start to show that the vehicle is slowing down. and soon shows that you are going 0 mph. after sitting for a few hours in park and not running, it might work. sometimes it never works again for a day. took it to the local dealer and they told me that they have had many others like this and they didn't know why it is happening but chevrolet has not recalled it yet. they told me it ranges from 2003- 2005. they have worked on every one of these years. the dealer told me they couldn't do anything for me except replace my speedometer cluster, for about 1000 dollars. without a speedometer is a big safety issue and i know that this is happening to other people. *nm

My speedometer is not giving the right speed or sometimes, it doesn't even work at all. i still get my total mile on the odometer but not my speed. this is a low mileage, barely used truck and i have no idea how fast i'm going? sometimes it works but is still off and other times, it just stops working all together. if it is cold, it stops working and you hear a tapping noise coming out of the cluster. if it is warm weather, you get some response out of it but it is not correct. i was already pulled over for speeding when i thought i was under the speed limit. there are i believe, 5 different speed sensors on the truck and i don't know which one is not working. i am not alone in this! there are hundreds of people on chats and forums who are complaining about the same thing. why should i have to pay for these cheap parts? *nm

On 25500hd silverado, steering has to much free play and is sloppy. steering also wanders. had alignment done 3 time within 2 month period, and steering shaft replacement per bulletin - did not correct situation. still wonders to left. not safe when hauling a trailer or not. to date this has not been corrected properly. *jb

I have owned my 2003 silverado for just over 3 years. i have had several problems already: 1) the air conditioner would only blow out hot air-- has been fixed. 2)vibration noise in rear end around 30-40 mph--?? can't be fixed/duplicated. 3) speedometer quit working--replaced at my cost; warranty just expired, go figure; also had to go to court to fight speeding ticket! ( relative has same truck, same problem!) 4) windshield wipers will not shut off, i get to pay for this one too, after warranty. i had to pull the fuse out! not very safe in crazy mi weather!! 5) also had tailgate cables replaced under recall. 6) back seat loop replaced due to recall. no wonder chevy is not doing well, who wants to spend over $30,000 for a piece of junk! will not buy another. *jb

Intermediate steering shaft keeps wearing out every 15 thousand miles and the dealer has replaced it twice in two years it is worn out again at 45k mi. and needs replaced . in my opinion this should be a 100k mi part at least. *nm

Intermediate shaft problem. has been an issue since 99 model chevy/gmc trucks. the only fix they have is to remove the intermediate shaft and lube it every few thousand miles. at one time gm was replacing the shafts with a new model, however they cannot fix the problem and it keeps occurring. not sure if the problem would lead to a possible injury situation.*jb

Failure of the left front wheel hub bearings. resulted in severe wobble while driving, especially noted in turning to the left. dealer advised this was a serious problem and could have resulted in wheel failure or fire due to overheating. vehicle has under 42,000 miles. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated intermittently, when the outside conditions are cold the steering is stiff. this occurs at any speed. the problem is worse when the brake pedal is depressed and turning the steering wheel. the dealership replaced the valve in the power steering. this has not corrected the problem. there is a technical service bulletin, #10013533, regarding this, but no repair available. the water pump gasket was replaced. the transfer case bearings were replaced. updated 03/22/06. *jb

The brakes have not felt as though they were working properly since i purchased this truck. sponge brake difficulty stopping at slow speeds longer stopping distance pulling to one side. i have brought it back to the dealer twice with this complaint. i felt the problem was becoming worse. i took it back again, the dealer now tells me that the rear rotors are rusted and pitted beyond repair and the front rotors are showing rust also and that they will not cover this expense. this vehicle has under 30,000 miles. i called the manufacturer for assistance and they will only pay for one rotor (a good will gesture) this is a terrible response, i have now found that i am only one of many with this problem. this is a safety issue that should be published i had very little warning of problem. *jb

Premature rear disc brake failure--2003 chevrolet silverado, 31750 miles-rear disc rotors rusted, pitted, flaking. dealer replaced rotors and discs at my cost. even though rotors are obviously suffering from weather and salt, dealer insists that the calipers still work, therefore it is not a warranty issue. i contend that the literal disintegration of the rotors caused the rapid wear of the brake pads. when inspected in august of 2005, i was told the pads were at 75% thickness. the truck still has 6 months left on the manuf. warranty. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated the speedometer failed while driving on the interstate. the vehicle cruise control was set for 70 mph when the speedometer needle began reading 120 mph. the contact did not notice a change in the actually speed the vehicle was traveling. the cruise control was reset at 70 mph and the speedometer continued to register at 120 mph. the speedometer never worked properly again. the dealership replaced the speedometer cluster. *nm

Driving down the road you go to put the brakes on to slow down, and there is pre activation of abs system on dry roads, and then when you almost get to a stop the brake pedal fades away, causing you to roll forward at least 5 feet until pedal comes back and stops you. called gm and local dealer because i heard from regular mechanic there was a recall on the chevrolet trucks for abs problems and they both told me that my truck wasn't part of recall ,only up to 2002 were recalled that i would have to pay a non-returnable fee for a diagnostic test to see if it is the wheel speed sensor is corroded and if they can duplicate the problems i say it has. then if they do gm said they would try to work out something with dealer on my payment of the repairs.*ak

Chevy silverado 2003. i have owned my truck for 2 years. in those two years i have experienced lack of brakes at a slow rate of speed. 40 and under. i have been to the dealership 3 times. last march my valve stem broke at 28 thousand. at that time, i told the man working that i don't have brakes,sometimes. he asked when? i don't know, just at stop signs and in san francisco traffic. he said to keep an eye on it. i did and took it back last friday to get it checked. i also saw the recall notice that nhtsa had in the paper last week. they mentioned a recall in costa rica and in six states on the chevy silverado and the anti lock brakes. i took it to the dealership and heather said there was no recall and that i would have to pay for any work. i have a truck load of kids all the time, yet i don't have brakes all the time. its happened about 20 times in the last two years. heather said the men drove it for two miles and found the problem. i don't know what they found, but i don't like it when mechanics take advantage of women. i just want my brakes fixed.

Dt*: the contact states there is a nhtsa recall campaign 05v379000 regarding the abs. the vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall. the abs activated at low speeds, however it was not included in the recall due to the vin. the dealer replaced a wheel sensor on 9-2-03, but this did not correct the problem. the rotors have been replaced twice, which also did not correct the problem. the contact finally disabled the abs in 12-04 as a solution to the problem. *ak

9 january, 2006 to whom it may concern: i would like to report two safety related problems with my 2003 chevrolet silverado pickup truck. while driving through illinois last year, i experienced the failure of the speedometer. i had been on the road for 12+ hours and was the only car on the interstate late at night when i began having trouble maintaining a consistent speed and was uncomfortable in general with the quality of my driving. feeling that i must be too tired to continue, i pulled off the road at the next interchange. when i stopped i noted that the speedometer continued to read 60 mph. this vehicle had approximately 40,000 miles on it at the time. the other problem is more recent. the vehicles flashers come on when the left turn signal is applied. this is very confusing to other drivers around me. the manager of the company fleet reports that there are two company pickups of the same vintage that have also experienced unreliable speedometers early in there lives. the chevrolet dealer states that he has not experienced these problems before. please let me know if this is an ongoing problem with these trucks or an anomaly. thank you,. *nm

We purchased a 2003 chevy silverado from steve's auto sales in norway, maine on 11-19-05. it had 49,000 miles on it. in looking it over my husband found that the brake lines are rusted. chevrolet has been told and they say that they can't do anything for us. it doesn't sound safe to me. *jb

Dt: the contact complained about steering failure . anytime the vehicle stopped the steering column locked. the brakes must be released, allowing the vehicle to move forward slightly before the steering wheel will turn. the dealership replaced the following ;the gear box, gear shaft, power steering pump and a valve in the power steering. after each repair the problem remained, and it was more evident in the morning when the vehicle was first started. the dealer has been in constant contact with the manufacturer, who responded by letter to the contact telling him this was a characteristic of this vehicle, and they would do no further testing . *ak

Dt: the contact stated the left front brake caliper broke while driving. the vehicle was taken to a certified dealer for inspection and repair. the manufacturer was contacted. they have agreed to reimburse the contact a portion of the repair cost.*ak

Dt: contact stated he and 2 others jumped on a tailgate to transport a couple of feet away. the cables on the driver's side tailgate broke, causing the tailgate to go down. this , in turn, it caused him to fall out, hitting the pavement. injuries were sustained. *ak

Dt: the contact stated the steering column was loose and he heard a popping noise coming from the steering column. on june 29, 2004 the steering shaft was replaced under warranty. there was 35,000 miles on the vehicle . at 78,000 miles the problem recurred. also, the steering was difficult to maneuver; especially at higher speeds, and when there were indentations in the pavement. the dealership agreed that the problem is with the steering shaft occurred again. the vehicle has not been repaired.*ak

Wire short in wires leading to the drivers door and rear door. wires shorted out behind left kick panel and partially melted the kick panel. no modifications to truck - seems they were installed poorly from the factory. dealer is charging to fix and replace wires and reprogram the door control module. shorts caused air bag light to come on - dome lights failed to turn off - left rear window rolled itself down while truck was sitting unoccupied - all power windows failed - battery completely drained. *jb

Speedometer erratic, sticks at various speeds, does not display correct speed. part is on national back order. was told by chevorlet dealership that this problem exists in 2003 and 2004 silverado trucks. internet search for others experiencing this problem provided numerous results. with road conditions in fla subject to change without notice due to rain this is a very unsafe condition, its hard to drive safe if you have no idea how fast you are going. was told the part will be at least 2 months back order. *nm

Dt: the contact stated both of the rear seat belts located close to the windows tightened with movement of the passenger. the buckle has to be disengaged to loosen the belts. this process started all over again when the passenger buckled the seat belt. the dealership was unable to locate the cause of the problem. *ak

The speedometer on my 2003 silverado started sticking, not resetting to zero. this allowed the vehicle to fail to show the correct speed. at times, i could turn the vehicle off, and restart several times in a row to make the speedometer reset back to zero, but now it will not reset at all. i have heard from several dealers that this is a common problem, if that is true, why hasn't general motors done something to correct this problem, such as a "recall"?? this to me is a serious problem, and the manufacturer should be taking the proper steps for repairs! if i cant get this resolved, i can guarantee i wont purchase another gm vehicle! *nm

Dt: the contact stated while backing the vehicle out of the garage the steering wheel would not turn. he depressed the brake pedal and it would not stop the vehicle. then he pressed very hard on the brake pedal and the vehicle finally stopped. had the vehicle towed to a dealership to have it inspected. they found the hydraulic pump that controlled the steering and the brakes needed to be replaced. repairs were made.*ak

Speedometer started sticking and gradually got worse, now the speedometer is stuck. i called the dealer and they said they just send them off to a speedometer repair shop all the time. i called some speedometer repair shops and they said that the problem i am having was quite common for the 2003 chevy truck.*jb

Dt: contact owns a 2003 chevrolet silverado. there is abounce and vibration in the steering column while driving under normal circumstances, but it became worse while turning the steering wheel left or right. sometimes there was a grinding noise coming from the steering column while turning the steering wheel. this happened every time the contact drove the vehicle. there was a remedy kit available from chevrolet that iwascovered under warranty or the contact would have to cover the expense. while the vehicle was still under warranty this kit was installed in approximately a year ago, but the vehicle was experiencing the same problems again. the new recommendation from chevrolet was to replace the intermediate steering shaft. the service dealer said the vehicle iwasout of warranty, and that there was no recall. the contact would have to cover the cost of the repair. the manufacturer stated that they were aware there was a problem, but if there was no recall and the vehicle is no longer u was nder warranty there was nothing that ccould be done, except for the contact to pay for the repairs.*ak

Dt: the consumer complained about several problems. while driving he had trouble shifting from first gear. the dealer reprogrammed the engine control module and the transmission module control. the vehicle was still shifting hard, and the rpms revved. the replacement of the aforementioned did not remedy the transmission problem. the second problem was with the brake light coming on the cluster assembly. the service dealer replaced it, and it seemed to work well at this time. the third problem was with a noise in the rear of the vehicle. the dealer replaced the gear kit, two gaskets, case, the rear differential carrier assembly, carrier gears, and shims. the noise was still heard. the dealer recommended that the contact install carpet to cut down on the noise. the final problem was with a loss of rear traction. the dealer has been unsuccessful in identifying the root of the traction problem.*ak the cruise control stopped working. updatd 11/29/05. *jb

I have a 2003 chevy silverado 1500 with 28000 miles. i purchased the vehicle in march 2003. the rotors on the rear breaks are completely rusted. the dealer would not warrant the rotors and pad even though i complained about the problem while the truck was still under warranty. the brakes are extremely soft, especially at low speeds. i want the entire brake system replaced for safety. i have 2 friends with the same vehicle, both have twice replaced pads and rotors in less than 60000 miles! i cannot afford to pay this replacement my self. i want chevy to make good on a faulty design that i paid my entire savings on!!!! *nm

On 2 separate occasions i had flat tires with my 2003 chevy 2500hd 4x4 truck with aluminum wheels. fortunately in both cases it was on my driveway rather than on a public road. the aluminum wheels appear to have electro-chemically welded themselves to the wheel hubs. i could not remove them (after removing all lug nuts of course) with a 12 pound sledge hammer & wood block. my local chevy dealer informed me they use a 20 pound sledge hammer. i requested some form of anti-seize material be applied to the wheel/hub interface but was told this is normal for this vehicle. i even drove the vehicle for a few feet with no lug nuts installed to break the wheel free to no avail. i called chevy roadside service who facilitated the tire change. this is ridiculous had this failure been on a highway my life would have been endangered by having to work under the vehicle while only supported by the manufacturer supplied jack; while traffic passed nearby. *jb

Purchase truck used in june of 2005 with 49000miles truck has less then 55000miles on it.. first day ran out of gas ..gas guage and digital reading showed 50 more miles worht of gas.fixed thegas guage problem or so they say then oil guage started showingway past full on oil then would go back to no oil then to normal speedometer sticks and on occasion will go back to zero for the most part your start off speed is at least 40mph.. was told by dealer it was a faulty i.c.p and that they have been having several brought into the dealership with the same problem.. i feel if this is a problem that obviously chevy is aware of it should be recalled and fixed with no out of pocket expense to its consumers. was also told that my dash would have to be shipped out of town to be repaired and that i would be without a vehicle for awhile.. i am truly disappointed with what i thought would be the perfect truck considering its a 44000 dollar vehicle only to find out i need to spend an additional 4-500 dollars.. wow what a disappointment:(

Dt: 2003 chevrolet silverado. my vehicle is two years old and only has 13, 000 miles on it. had to take vehicle to dealership to have the brakes checked. the brakes were grinding metal to metal, and the brake pads were worn out. the brakes should have not worn out at 13, 000 miles. the warranty expired since the consumer had the vehicle for two years. the consumer should not have to pay to have the brakes fixed. the dealership told the consumer that warranty was for two years. or 24, 000 miles. just noticed this week how bad the brakes were. did not have any accidents, and when pressing on the brakes could hear them scrape against the metal. *ak

The locking rear axle on my chevrolet silverado 2500hd does not release when entering a turn or intersection from a stop, causing the vehicle to continue forward and fight steering in the proper direction. i have had several near head on collisions with opposing traffic upon finally completing the turn. chevrolet inspected the rear axle and installed a lubricant additive at approximately 10000 miles but the problem still exists. i have spoken with other owners of the same make,model,and year vehicle who have similar problems. *nm

Warranty on catalytic converters on chev silverado 1500 v6 4.3 went bad corrosion inside rattling. replaced ,but not the muffler which was checked at same time and the bellow was found to have been loose due to corrosion,and debris from the converters, but was not covered on warranty. why? i was informed it wasn't 't part of the exhaust system.??? the exhaust goes through the converters and out the muffler. *nm

I noted the recall on the chevy silverado's for anti-lock brake activation at slow speeds. the article only noted up through 2002 vehicles. i have a 2003 silverado 1500 and i note the issue. the antilock activates around 10 to 20 mph as i enter a turn lane for a gas station i use. there is a ripple series of bumps in the turn lane. if i forget and am on the brakes, the braking effect seems to drop about 50%. the first couple of times i nearly rolled through the intersection due to not understanding the brakes and what had happened. if there had been another car in the intersection i probably would have hit them. perhaps you need to look at the 2003 silverados also in your investigation. sincerely, james copes [email protected]. *nm

Rear brake rotors warped at 15500 miles. could feel vibration when applying brakes. chevrolet dealership turned down rotors and reinstalled old brake pads. when i questioned the rotors warping with this low mileage, turning down the rotors instead of replacement and reuse of the used brake pads i was advised that this was all that gm authorized to fix the problem. *nm

Dt: the brake pedal is soft and will go to the floor when stopping. this happens intermittently. started noticing the brake problem on june 1, 2003. contacted the dealer, and they did a diagnostic test and could not find anything wrong with it. there was recall for the abs brakes for 2002 models. however, this vehicle was not included due to vin. contacted gmc, and they said to go to a different dealer. they did so and got the same results. *ak

Looseness in front end steering. clunking and wobble in front end felt through steering wheel. repeat occurrence. first time require removal and replacement of steering intermediate shaft replacement pn 88963611. first occurrence happened at 28162 miles, second occurrence happened at approx 46,000 miles. probable design flaw. *jb

We have a 2003 chevrolet silverado and a 2004 impala. speedometers have broken on both. the impala was replaced under warranty. the silverado was turned in under warranty but not repaired and now it is out of warranty. this apparently is a major and widespread problem with chevrolet vehicles and the company will not stand behind the product. bob howard chevrolet in oklahoma city tells me cost to fix this problem is $400-600 for the part and $125-175 for labor. how many of these module clusters have prematurely malfunctioned? mechanics and gm service centers say they are on national back order. that should illustrate the need for review and recall. *jb

When coming up to an intersection, the truck failed to come to a complete stop, in dry conditions, with ample stopping distance. the truck was revving at a high rpm, and continued to push forward with the brake pedal pushed as hard as possible. this resulted in a rolling collision. vehicle finally stopped when shifted into park. immediately called dealership, and gm. after 2 days in the dealership they stated nothing is wrong, and will not investigate any further. i will not drive the vehicle any longer after this scary incident.*jb

My 2003 chevrolet silverado has 24000 miles on it and the brakes rotors are showing a high rate of corrosion. this vehicle has had very poor braking since new and could cause a very serious accident. corroded brake rotors with very limited wear of the brake pads. rotors wear out before pads. also the rotors show signs of poor metal quality with high corrosion even pitting all over the braking surface. at this time i am working with gm to warranty the brakes due to corrosion not wear. this should be a safety concern, since the brakes could just fall apart. *nm

Failure of windshield wipers intermittantly usually when it's raining very hard; resulting in total loss of visibility and near collision on several occasions. gm knows they have a problem with circuit boards. this is surely a safety item.

The truck was parked and the key was in the accessory (acc) position, and my two year old granddaughter hit the shift lever out of park, and the truck rolled down the street and hit a u-haul truck, she was not injured, her mother was in the truck with her but could not shift it back into park, or hit the brake. *jb

Dt: 2003 chevrolet silverado extended cab short wheel base 2 wheel drive truck. while driving over rough surfaces,there is noise in the steering. it was repaired under warranty on august 16, 2004. the intermediate steering shaft was replaced. chevrolet claimed that the consumer had to pay $80.00 as a diagnostic fee. in addition, has to pay for the parts and $275.00 labor fee. the dealer agreed to wave the $80 inspection fee if they id the work. the manufacturer said that it would be up to the consumer to have this fixed, and the dealer would determine if it would be safe to drive the vehicle. *ak

A/c stops working. pressure switches changed, coolent recharged, now they are adding an electric fan to help cool the condenser. can't figure out what is wrong.

I am the owner of a 2003 chevrolet silverado with 43,000 miles. as a result of the rear rotors on the truck rusting and falling apart, i had to replace the rotors. due to the poor design of the parking brake assembly, the passenger side rotor had to be cut off with a torch!. *jb

Dt: contact heard a loud clanking noise in the steering column for about a period of 2 years. he heard the noise when turning the steering wheel while going over a bump. it has gotten progressively worse. dealership tried to put a lube kit in it, and it did not help it. the dealer ordered a knuckle assembly and replaced it. roughly 10,000 miles later it started to make the noise again. on 7-26 he noticed that when turning off the car the steering wheel was not locking. it occurred at any speed. *ak

General motors have a faulty neutral safety shift switch on their silverado 1500 1/2 ton pickups that may lead to failure and cause the truck to burn. i have brought this to the attention of general motors but they ignored me. my truck burned and we put it out. i see others that have burned and i bet the neutral safety switch is what started it. if you were to investigate how many 03 (maybe newer maybe older) have burned you will find the cause in this switch.

Dt: both rear axle seals leaked and grease was coming out and getting on the end of the axles and on the rear rotor disc brakes. when braking heavy on hills smoke eminated, mostly on the left side. mechanic was on vacation and consumer was waiting mechanic's return for repairs. consumer did contact gm, who said they had no reports on this issue, but there was a recall on the rear brakes. consumer had an appointment, and dealer stated they would look into axles when repairing the recall. *ak

Dt:contact stated the braking system was defective. the pedal went down very far and was spongy. it took a long time for the truck to stop. the consumer stated pumping the pedal did not help. contact bought vehicle new and was having this problem somewhat since he purchased it, but did not realize it was so bad until he drove other vehicles. this happens at any speed. the dealer said it was operating as designed. *ak the consumer stated the abs light came on. when the consumer drove 45 mph down a gravel road, and applied the brakes, there was no abs function and the wheels did not lock. although the truck did eventually stop, it took a great distance to do so. the steering shaft was replaced. *jb

2003 and up chevrolet silverado 1500 4.8l automatic i found i am able to shift the transmission out of park without the engine running and with the key in the accessory position. this is from no key inserted to inserting key and rotating to the accessory without going to the run or start positions. this can be done without depressing the brake pedal. this has also been verified on numerous 2003, 2004 and 2005 silverados with automatic transmission but unknown engines at several dealerships. i was told everytime this is normal operation but was unknown to them prior to me bringing the problem up to them. this problem is consistent and occurs everytime attempted. possible scenerio involves children in the vehicle with the key set to the accesory position to permit the radio to play while the driver exits to perform some task. the children could hit the shift lever and move it out of park permitting the vehicle to move. again, this is possible without the engine running and without the brake pedal depressed. with the key in the run position, the brake pedal must be depressed to move the shift lever but never with the key in the accessory position.

I own a 2003 chevrolet silverado extended cab short box z71 4x4 pick up truck. it has the 4 speed automatic with overdrive transmission. i have a consistant shifting driveline clunk that only occurs when the transmission upshifts from 2nd to 3rd gear and then downshifts from 3rd to 2nd gear. i have had this vehicle back to the chevrolet dealer three times so far concerning this issue. all i get is the usual gm runaround that this problem is a normal condition and no repairs should be attempted according to the tsb related to this condition. i have owned other gm vehicles in the past, and i have never had of any of them bang or clunk from the transmission when shifting gears automatically. they claim that it is some type of a momentary torque reversal problem when that particular shift occurs that causes the clunking and or banging condition in their transmission. a momentary torque reversal in their drivetrain while the vehicle is moving in forward gears is a normal condition? not to me. they absolutely will not fix this problem under warranty stating that it is a normal condition. on the other hand, if this causes the transmission to suddenly lock up...and someone gets hurt in the process....then i'm sure that it will be fixed properly. why is it that the automotive manufacturers today will not repair their engineered screwups at their expense, like they should be responsible to do? why is it that they will not fix their problems unless that componet in question fails completely?

My rear rotor on my 2003 silverado ss with 41,000 miles is rusting/cracking away causing my pads to dig grooves into rotor.pads have another 40,000 miles left on them.the warranty ran out at 36,000.should gm be held responsible for the defective rotor?

Upon parking, had slight difficulty placing vehicle into park gear position on very slight incline in driveway of home. stepped out of vehicle, returned a few minutes later to find vehicle had rolled into pole. attempted to start vehicle, but would not start, tried to put vehicle in neutral, and column shift was very loose. applied parking brake and contacted dealer for tow next morning. dealership determined the shift cable had broken, replaced with new shift cable. only explanation offered was plastic sheath had cracked allowing cable to kink, they stated initially it sometimes happens, but they did not explain why. i am very concerned that if vehicle were parked on street on a slight grade it would have rolled downhill possible causing damage or injuring someone.

Along with at least a dozen other complaints filed with nhtsa i also have concerns with the intermediate steering shaft sectoron my 2003 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd making a rattling , clicking noise espically when turning. what is the criteria to get gm to announce a recall? i feel this should be addressed before more serious consequences occur. so far i have made an appointment with the dealer and was told they would look at it and possibly replace the sector or place a lubrication kit in it.in reading other complaints it doesn't sound like this resolves the problem. my vehicle is out of warranty but this has been ongoing before the warranty expiration. i would be happyto allow and encourage you to forward this to gm for action.

Your id#05v161000 should also include chevy trucks with automatic transmissions. i own a 2003 chevy silverado 2500 hd 4 wheel drive. i have an automatic transmission and my parking brake has'nt held since last fall. its holding power had gotten continually weaker since the purchase date (9-30-02). chevy told me i had to adjust it, i did, twice. i can't adjust it anymore. additionally, my windshield has a perfect crack in it that follows the uppermost blow pattern of the defrost vents perfectly. this crack started during the first cold spell this past winter. it grew everytime i used the defroster. it stretches all the way across my windshield at this point. chevy told me that since there were imperfections in the glass, caused by wear and tear, that the windshield was not thier responsibility. the imperfections they found were not visible to the naked eye. damage by road debris would be accompanied by 'spidering' of the glass. none such on my windshield.

When windshield wiper motor gets wet from rain or washing the car, wipers seem to short out and turns on by itself, will not turn off until dry.

I own a 2003 chevrolet silverado that has the problem with the anti-lock brakes activating at low speeds because of rust around the sensors. it also has a problem with the brake rotor braking surface rusting and pitting so bad in two years that the rear brake pads were only making 50% contact with the brake rotor causing a loss of braking performance. your current investigation does not include 2003 vehicles and needs to be expanded.

Brake pedal feels very spongy. when brakes are applied hard the stopping didtance is very poor. in fact on dry pavement, the vehicle abs system will not engage. when i add my boat trailer (whithin the manufactures hauling spec) the vehicle is scary to drive, it feels like you cannot stop. i have contacted the dealer and they have no way to make the truck stop better. please help!!

The brakes on my 2003 cheverolet silverado are very soft. they require greater stopping distance than normal under any driving conditions. when going down a hill or other incline, you must press the brake pedal to the floor in order to stop. dealers have not resolved the problem.

Windsheild wiper variable speed control does not work properly. wipers will not turn off once turned on, thus ruining the wipers in light drizzle/foggy conditions. intermittant settings do not work at all, wipers only work in normal and high mode.*ak

2003 chevey 2500 hd crew cab duramax. the speedometer sticks and will not return to 0. when the temperature is really cold, all of the gauges stop working. no accidents, and no consequences except for the cost of repair. i have spoken to service shops in canada and here in minneapolis, and both say it is a fairly frequent problem. in fact, gmc has opened a shop in california which deals only with the instrument cluster. why is this problem not fixed my gmc, if it a problem they know exists.

I along with 4 close friends each individually oun 2003 chevrolet 2500hd pick up trucks. all of us have had a steering problem stemming from a steering component called the "intermediate steering shaft" all of my friends have had their shafts changed out under chevrolets factory warranty. i was not able to have mine covered because i am outside of the warranty milage, however i did have the problem diagnosed by my local dealer and was confirmed that the intermediate shaft was bad. i do not know what this shaft does but i am terrified to drive my truck in fear of my steering shaft breaking and falling out. chevrolet has refused to cover this part as a good faith repair so i am looking into making this a recall situation due to the number of warranty repairs they make on these trucks.*ak

After hearing grinding noises, i inspected rear brakes and found rear inner brake pads had prematurely worn out. after disassembling rear brakes found pads frozen (stuck) on pad guides (had to force off with hammer) which prevented pads releasing from rotor and caused uneven and premature wear of pads and destroyed rotors. new pads were purchased and upon installation realized even new pads would not slide freely on pad guides. local chevy dealer states they are unaware of any known problems. after searching numerous forums on internet and speaking with other silverado owners found this is a common problem yet manufacturer does not want to take responsibility. to avoid this problem from recurring i had guide notches on pads machined slightly oversize than oem. so far no problems to report. if i can figure this out why cant gm. *jb

Experianced a total digital blackout of all digital read out accross the dash. could not determine what gear i was shifting into. mileage readout and such was black. no display showing radio or heating/ac control.*ak

Both wheel bearings on the front axle failed on our 2003 chevrolet silverado 2500hd 4x4 4-door pickup. it has 39,000 miles and has been used in light duty situations only (primarily highway driving with light towing). a large squeak developed over a three week period when turning right corners. our local mechanic found that both front wheels, especially the drivers side, were close to falling off the truck. even though it was out of warranty, the local dealer replaced both failed mechanisims without question with in stock parts. a little odd that they would have multiple sets of front hub assemblies in stock on last year's model, don't you think?*ak

While driving srs light appeared on the dashboard and remained on. consumer =drove the vehicle to dealer for inspection. but, driver informed consumer that the problem could not be duplicated. *ak

While driving 55 mph consumer's vehicle was involved in a front collision. upon impact, dual air bags did not deploy. driver sustained head injuries due to his head hitting the steering wheel.*ak the chevrolet testers came to inspect the vehicle. they concluded that the impact was not hard enough nor was the vehicle going fast enough for the air bag to deploy. *nm

2003 chevy 1500hd taken to 3 different dealers for a vibration in running gear, last dealer instructed me to lower tire pressure from 50 in front and 80 in the rear to 45 pounds all around. this is half the recommened pressure of the truck and i asked if this would be safe, i was told not to worry about it. *jb

Abs light intermittently illuminated while driving or when braking. also, an ongoing problem with excessive wear of brake rotors and pads. they had to be turned or replaced. *ak

I purchased a new chevrolet silverado truck on 8/15/2003. i drove it 15,000 miles and the transmission went out and was replaced. on another trip returning from denver to durango i was driving on a mountain road when the back wheels suddenly, without warning locked up. this caused the truck to go into an uncontrolled skid and i crashed into the side of the mountain. the truck bounced back into the road and almost forced other cars off the highway. the opposite side of the highway was very steep with no guardrail. had i skidded that direction, i would have tumbled some 200 feet or more. to add to this the airbags did not deploy upon direct frontal impact with the mountain. all of this information was noted in the colorado highway patrol accident report # 908fzeh21p. general motors has accepted responsibility but 10+ weeks later has not replaced the totaled truck!*ak

Consumer was standing on the tailgate when cables broke. as a result, consumer was thrown to the ground. no injuries reported. *ak

2003 2500 silvarado with 36,000 miles. so far the transfer case shifting module (dropped itself inot 4 low at 70 mph), transmission (became so sloppy that it slammed passengers around had to be rebuilt), air conditioner compressor (quit working and the new one works poorly), fuel pump (died in the middle of utah and took 4 days to get the part), radio (had multiple problems had to be replaced after 4 visits), keyless remote failures, and 4 recalls. *ak

I am complaining of a clunking sound and a hard shift coming from the transmission in a 2-3 upshift in a 03 silverado automatic. i have taken it to the dealer many times and they tell me that gm says the noise and shifting is normal. i have driven many cars and nothing i have driven shifts like that. i wish gm would have to do a recall and correct the problem. *ak

I am complaining of the insufficent lube in the intermediate sterring shaft in a 2003 chevrolet silverado 1500 2wd. a loud poping comes from the steering wheel as you turn. i have found many other vehicles similar to mine having the same problem and wish gm would do a recall.*ak

(1) while crossing over a cattle guard at 10-25 mph the spare tire hoist and spare tire fell off the truck which are mounted underneath the 2003 chevy duramax pickup truck. ( 2 )the tire impacted the trailer brake plug hookup and broke the welds holding it on. (3) accident reported to supervisor and interagency safety commitee. vehicle to be serviced and repairs made when possible.*ak

Bought a new 2003 z-71 chevrolet silverado in sept 03'. had a bouncing while driving at any speed. went to the dealer and was told that i probably needed a tire balance. so i went to their tire shop. i did this five(5) separate times. so then they thought maybe a bad tire. so, i had all tires changed. i have now had three(3) differant sets of tires put onto this vehicle. so then i e-mailed chevrolet with no response. about three weeks later i e-mailed them again. this time i got a phone call from chevrolet. they had me set up a ride along with the service manager. just leaving the dealership for the test drive, the service manager commented on the vibration in his rear through the seat. 20 minutes later his comment was "this would drive me crazy!". at that point they changed the rear shocks. no help. so i called the dealership to see what was their next coarse of action and the service manager told me he was meeting with his rep. and a engineer and wanted the truck back again three weeks later. so after i dropped it off, later i got a call from the service manager that there are two setting on the front end that they wanted to try. i got my vehicle back without any explaination from anyone about what was done now. i didn't want to take it but was told that leaving it there would not help because if this did not work that pretty much too bad. no one had a solution for me i was then told that it was drivin' be the engineer and compared to several others. they then said it's probably a characteristic of the vehicle. however, i was not givin a chance to drive any other at any time nor did i see any 2003 z-71's on their lot. so what did they compare it to and why wasn't i givin an oportunity to drive another?? i also work on a used car lot myself and have driven 2 other 2003 z-71's which we had and one was lifted. neither had the bounce mine has. some roads bounce so much that the truck starts to hop constantly. not to mention the back pain after long drives.*ak

While driving at any speed vehicle pulled to left. dealership replaced the leaf coil spring and two space bars. but, problem still recurred. manufacturer admitted there was a problem ,but they didn't know how to resolve it. *ak

While parking vehicle pulled sideways. driver lost control of vehicle, and it crashed into a tree. no injuries reported. dealer stated that tie rod separated. *ak

While attempting to park in a parking lot vehicle swerved to the left and collided with a tree. consumer examined the under side of the vehicle, and discovered that the left tie rod broke. dealer claimed that the collision caused the tie rod to break. consumer was not injured in the collision, and no other vehicle was involved.*ak front lower control arm had to be replaced and front wheel alignment was performed. *tt

The vehicle's lower idle arm and ball joint has failed. as a result the vehicle shakes violently when driving over 40 mph. the cause has yet to be determined. please provide additional information. *nm

Air conditioning will blow hot air, if you press the switch most of the time it will start working properly. *la

2003 chevrolet silverado tailgate support cables snapped in half while loading an atv and severely damaged the tailgate and re-injured a sprained right ankle. if it wasn't for a commercial grade drop trailer hitch this accident could have resulted in a much more serious bodily harm. both digital pictures were taken and the tailgate has been sent to colonial west chevy in fitchburg mass. for immediate repair. i wouldn't be surprised if there's not a class action law suit ab out this. *ak

While making a right turn a loud knocking noise was heard coming from the steering column. consumer drove vehicle to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that steering column needed to be replaced due to a worn out shaft, and lack of steering column lubrication. consumer informed the mechanic that the problem recurred. *ak

Passenger side wheel cracked. i was not near the dealer and took off the wheel and had it welded at shop that specializes in cracked wheels. *jb

While driving 55-60 mph when vehicle brakes were depressed transmission shifted to third/fourth/fifth, and sixth gears, flowing vehicle ad engine idled high. consumer only noticed this problem when the tow button was depressed. *ak

While driving, under any braking conditions, there was a delay when the brake pedal was pressed. the consumer has made contact with the dealer. please provide any additional information. *nm

(1) na; (2) seat heater control switch location. easy/often inadvertant activation when operating window or mirror controls. activation is not noticed because the indicator lights do not face the driver. the first indication is when your butt starts to fry. attempts to deactivate the heater is dangerous because the indicator lights do not face the driver so you have to divert your attention from the road to operate the heater. i have run off the road several times trying to turn off the heater while driving. also, the seat heater gets too hot and presents a risk of burn injuiry or fire. (3) todate nothing.*ak

Center hub caps will not stay tight. have had a loosening problem since new. dealer provided a bag of new plastic nuts. on last trip the left front hub center cam off and ended up in the north rim of the grand canyon. dealer installed a new center hub cap and another bag of nuts. some of the new nuts wouldn't tighten and had to be moved around to different locations to tighten. i believe the problem is due to the stainless over-lay spot welded to the steel wheel, thus limiting the thread contact with the lug nuts. the plastic nuts only grab the steel lug nut by 1 or 2 threads. my window sticker says chrome style steel wheels. this statement is mis-leading. they are a steel wheel with a stainless hub cap welded to the wheel and a plastic center hub with plastic nuts. the service manager was suppose to check on this problem but never heard back from him. please note: i am a mechanic. i know how to install these type of centers. i do not over tighten them and they are installed by hand. i noticed the problem when the truck was new and i drove it home. i waxed the wheels and noticed the loose centers. these could be dangerous to a pedestrian if one flew off struck them.

Consumer stated that vehicle's extended mirror did not extend far enough as a result, an excessive blind spot was produced. *ak the consumer feels that if the mirror were extended two more inches visibility would be greatly improved. *nm

1to2 gear slamming,within 900 miles,engine light on at 800 miles,change oil message at 740 miles,abs light on at about 8000 miles,7500 miles would not start,poor brake performance,extended cab pass. door squeaking loudly,bose sound speaker rattling,tail light squeaking,2-3 upshift very abrupt and loud,clunky like the transmission is falling out,turn signal right flashers will come on sometimes until you cancel the turn signal,rear bumper rusting out,truck will sometimes roll 2-4 inches when first started,chevrolet refused this truck on a lemon law buyback ,they installed a software download for late upshift,not much help,they replaced the crank pos. sensor,truck now starts,replaced taillight,one less squeak,put nuts on the rear door speaker,now it hopefully wont fall out ,they wedged the rear passenger door,temporary fix,1500 miles later squeezing again,oil life monitor reset(fixed),repaired,the 2-3 upshift clanking they say is normal(rattles the inside of the cab when it happens)brakes fade at low pedal pressure,they say its normal(seems there is a recall on this sight for that),turn signal causing flashers to come on,unknown why,or how to fix it,dealership not eager to fix rust issue on bumber,not airtight cabin wind noise,chevrolet claims it as normal,they changed alternator,and plug-ins for late upshift,no change,eager to rid of this truck!!!*ak

Air bags not deploying on a new chevy silverado pick-up/ following a vehicle crash. driver was injured, and scarred. was hospitlized and still having problems and will have a lifetime scar on face area. also legs and thighs are scarred. our son was traveling at a high rate of speed passing, lost control went off highway head on into deep ditch, flipped over, went side to side coming to rest sideways on tires that were now flat and still no airbag deployment. sent a complaint and pictures, police report and medical records to gm, no satisfaction from there. what does a vehicle have to have done to have an airbag deploy???? vehicle was totaled. son is permantly scarred, and parents have lost faith in chevy trucks, and airbags. his older brother co-signed so he would have a "new, safer" vehicle and am now so very upset with gm as to an explanation as to why these air bags did not deploy to protect our son. this vehicle (he was speeding passing) went off the road head on into a deep ditch, overturned several times, hit side to side in ditch, flattened tires and came to rest on shoulder of road. now how much more does it take to deploy an air bag???? i think if we were wealthy and could afford a lawyer they maybe would of listened and checked this more, but as we are just "common" hard working us citizens, we don't really count. also our son was drinking at the time of the incident, ( should not matter to safety of vehicle equipment) i was told it was not "catastropic enough" of an accident to warrent any damages. ?? then they tried to say the "accident" (meaning vehicle) wasn't. i think we all know what they meant. we were not looking for "millions" (stretching it), just his medical bills and the problem corrected in other chevy's so this would not happen to someone else. as usual the honest people, and hard working middle class can get no help. prayers go out to anyone else this has happened to and that it won't happen to someone else's child.

While driving at low speeds power steering locked up. vehicle was taken to the dealer numerous times for inspection, and mechanic could not duplicate the problem. *ak

While driving at low speeds vehicle vibrated and the consumer heard a loud humming noise. dealership informed the consumer that the problem pertained to the muffler. *ak

While driving to the doctor i heard a loud metal on metal clunk sound from transmission hump. immediately following, vehicle started missing like it was out of gas and stalled. in approximately 2 seconds the fuel guage went from reading 1/4 tank to empty.*ak service dept informed us that the electronic float device located inside the fuel tank had failed. upon further investigation they discovered that the reason it failed was due to the fact that gasoline destroys them. we can expect to experience this problem indefinately because gm has no replacement part that works . the dealer informed us that gm is aware of this problem and that all pick up trucks made by gm have this part and will experience this problem at some point in time. in other words, you have no accurate fuel guage and should keep your truck as full of gas as possible at all times.

My 1 1/2 year old 2003 chevrolet pickup truck, after doing what it says in one of your bulletins, cd gets hot, ejects cd, and resets clock to 12:00, quit working. while i drive a lot and the truck has 54000 miles on it, the stereo has never touched the pavement, and does not have 54000 miles on it, yet, chevrolet refuses to replace this defective stereo system. which means, i guess, that they have a life expectancy, of their stereo systems, of 1 1/2 years. no help from the dealer, or general motors at all with this complaint. they offered to replace for 450.00, which is idiotic to get replaced if they are not going to stand behind it when it goes bad in 1 1/2 years. highly disappointed in general motors lack of backing of their products. *la

Constant wind noise from hood hinge flaps and top windshield seal at 50 and above. also driver door seal squeals. i repaired the flapping noises myself after the dealer tried 6 times and said it was my bug deflector. the door seal was replaced after 6 trips and is worse now than then. i repaired this as well as i could. they replaced 1 of 3 seals. after 6 visits for my goodyear tires (nothing found wrong again) they decide to replace them. it took 2 weeks to get tires and then they replaced 2. the trans is clunker and has computer software issues causing shifting problems and dealer can not duplicate. the computer thinks it is ok so no codes will be stored. i also pointed out the gm tsb's to them on this problem. i may as well go to the zoo for service at least i get to expect poor service from wild animals. i wrote the vp of gm and he responded to me and forwarded my letter to vp of sales and service. went back for repairs and still have same problems and the new tires with 1000 miles are bad just like the others. $38,000 piece of junk with $3.00 hr monkeys repairing it. what a joke, they can have this truck back since there is nothing wrong with it. i was also refused service two times by my local dealer because i bought it else where. service manager said: "you are not our loyal customer and if we decide to service you, you go behind our loyal customers, reguardless of order". i think he may be looking for other employment now that the vp called me to discuss my concerns, but that is still against the law and the gm contract. think i am going to just get a horse and when it stops working just shoot it.

Steering wheel vibrates when turning. the dealer has been contacted. *ak

1st event in december 03 atempt to pull out of parking space steering wheel wouldnot turn with foot on brake , serval events since with brake applied steering wheel will not move. dealer tech. saw event ,called gm techinal service they gave no remedy to fix problem ,truck is at dealers now.

The passenger side window will not go up. took vehicle to dealer, and he did something to the computer to correct the problem. the last 4 months the window had the same problem.*ak

While driving vehicle leaked fuel. when this occurred the brake pedal became hard and failed to stop vehicle when the pedal was depressed, resulting in a rear end crash. consumer sustained minor injuries. vehicle was towed to the dealership, and dealership only repaired the body parts damaged by the crash. however, dealership indicated it couldn't find any leak. when the consumer picked up the vehicle from the dealership there was smoke coming out from under the hood. dealership indicated that the smoke was caused by fluid from the radiator, and the body parts they had replaced. the failure recurred while driving on the highway at 55 mph. this caused the vehicle to hydro plane from the diesel fuel, and consumer lost control of the vehicle. it was towing a trailer at the time of the incident. the trailer jack knifed and damaged the side of the vehicle. it was towed to another dealership, who found a leak in the fuel injector line.*ak

1. poor ride, vibration, while driving at various speeds. mostly between 35 to 50 mph. had the problem with "stock" tires. replaced with after market tires, slightly larger. still had annoying vibration. to a point that i do not like to drive the vehicle! 2. fuel economy sucks! i "upgraded" from my '92 gmc pickup which gave me 12 to 14 mpg around town to 15 to 18 mpg on a trip; to my "new" chev. which is good for about 9.5 to 9.8 mpg around town and the best ever, on a trip was 13.4 mpg!!! 3. the bench-type seat is not adjustable to remove the "vee" feeling when driving. 4. the self-darkening mirrors are a hazard when trying to backup or change lanes! 5. the passenger front seatbelt locksup and can't be freed unless you unbuckle and reattach the belt, only to have it lockup again! i have had the vehicle back to two different dealers on three seperate occasions principally for the mileage and the very annoying vibration! i have contacted general motors, also with no success! i've changed tires, asked to have the transmission checked for the vibration, only to have seperate service managers tell me that "it seems okay to me, and that there's nothing on the computer to indicate a problem!" and "you put bigger tires on the truck! you can't do that!" i just "celebrated" (?!!!) my first anniversary with the truck and its been a miserable year!*ak

First time:main computer failed. second time:stalling, running rough, boggs down and makes loud noise,mis-fire in #5 & #6 cilander.a/c not working.not fixed. third time: everything same as second time and engine light now coming on.not fixed. fourth time:all lights on dash come on and all messages appearing on message board.not fixed. after computer changed truck preformed unsatisfactory and is still unsatisfactory. all having to do with computer. told it is a random problem that is hard to detect and may not ever be fixed.

Steep hillside incline / decline failure of sensor for fuel gauge/ do not know the amount of fuel in the vehicle computer failure, leaving to being stranded repair of failure cost of 600.00 dollars usda / complaint is as follows:off road travel would be impossible due to in the event you are in a steep incline or decline it would cost $600.00 to repair. really not cost effective. *ak

I have a 2003 chevrolet silverado 1/2 ton pickup with 29000 miles on it when the rear brake calipers froze up and ruined my rear brake pads. chevy says that this is not under warranty because of poor maintenance on my part. i did everything required in the owners manual. i have talked with three of my friends who have the same pickup and their rear brakes failed at lower mileages and were covered and the dealer also installed a special brake dirt cover to the rear brakes to help with the problem. i contend that this is a design defect in the rear disc brakes and can expect to replace my rear brakes in another 18000 t0 24000 miles. would you look into this matter for me.

2003 silverado 2500 tail gate . returned truck to roger dean chevrolet in palm beach fla. they refused to repair broken tailgate straps. truck was also covered by bumper to bumper insurance sold to me by roger dean chevrolet and they refused to replace broken straps.

While driving 65 mph the vehicle stalled without warning. this caused a lost of steering and brakes. the vehicle had been inspected three times and could not be reproduced. *ak the first problem occurred when the consumer was traveling at 75 mph down a slope when the vehicle lost all power (engine, brake, and steering) the consumer would have to turn the switch four times in order for the engine to start. the problem repeated itself two more times with similar instances. *sc *jb

Consumer was pulling down the tailgate and the cables snapped. consumer placed the cables inside of the vehicle and drive it to the dealer. mechanic informed consumer that no cables were available. *ak

Very excessive drivetrain clunk while down shifting 3-2 gear, upshift 2-3 and now is getting worse as 1-2 and 2-1 are clunking due to excessive drive train freeplay. the problem is aggarvated rounding slow cornors, down a grade or with a load. the dealer tried to made me believe i was hearing things and everthing is fine the first time in, yet everyone who rides in it asks "whats that banging". the second time in the dealer for the problem i got a tech service bulletin, which says owners may find the clunk objectionable?? will not adversely affect durability??? there is no way this drivetrain will last as long as a nonclunker. the dealer was also going to get me an extended warranty for drivetrain, which didn't happen. very frustrated chevy won't fix it. if owners find it objectionable it should be fix. *ak

Vehicle caught fire while parked in the driveway. (nar) *ph fire was due to a mechanical and/or electrical problem with the vehcle. the fire not only destroyed consumer's vehicle but damaged the siding of the house. *la *cb

Transmission shifted through all ranges while in first gear (low) would not down shift to pass. *ak

At least one fuel injector failed on my 6.6, duamax. 3700 miles out of warranty. can not replace just one. gm says to replace all. no way to test injectors. injectors are not stocked because of high price. down 13 days because parts not available. *jb

Vehicle seems to go into 4-wheel drive by itself while driving . this has happened to me three times already. i want to switch dealers but gm told me no i have to stay with the dealer who worked on the vehicle. as this happens the vehicle slows down considerably causing the seat belt to lock and hold me back. also at times the vehicle just slows down while at highway speeds. the check 4 wheel drive light comes on and the push buttons on the panel do not operate. (the lights go out) i also think this has caused my odometer to fast forward. it tells me now that i have 29900 miles on the truck . i have all records and need help. i travel to work 8 times a month and round trip is 114 miles this does not seem to work out . can they check the electronics and see actual miles from the computer. *jb

My 2003 extended cab truck has the seat belt built into the seat. i complained that it squeaked so they ordered a new belt assembly, but when they went to replace it they found the seat frame was broken. they ordered a new on but when i talked to them they said it is something they see a lot because of over torque at the factory. i feel this is a major safety issue as my wearing the seat belt would not have helped in an acciddent if the frame was already broken.*ak

Vehicle jack is too short to jack up vehicle to change flat tire, jack placed under frame per owners manual. placing 4inch by 4inch block of wood between ground and jack solves problem - jack is extended as far as it will go. there is no internal threaded screw shaft in jack to extend it. dealer says there is only one part number for pickup jack, to write "gm" on side of block of wood. gm says if they get enough complants they'll look into it.. adding a block of wood under a fully extended jack to remove a flat tire doesn't seem safe as compaired to a jack that is the correct fit for a vehicle. at the price i paid for a new truck i can't understand why gm doesn't provide the correct jack! every silverado owner who has a flat like i did will get a suprise when they try to change the tire with the provided jack.*ak

While driving at 65 mph, the rear end started shaking and without warning the steering wheel had locked up, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. the consumer stated, ¿ the vehicle rolled over three times before resting on its side¿. the vehicle was towed to the dealership. the three passengers were taken to the hospital by ambulance. please provide any further details.*ak

While turning right or left consumer can't see the sides of the road due to poor headlight visibility at night. dealer indicated it would cost $100.00 to inspect the vehicle at consumer's expense.*ak

4x4 does not activate when needed. taken to dealer 4 times for the same problem. bullatin out from dealer to service techs stating there is a computer problem in the 4x4 program and at this time chevroet does not have a remedy to fix the problem.*ak

My 2003 chevrolet silverado caught on fire and burnt after being parked for at least and hour and a half. it was a total loss. *ak

Paint over entire truck is very thin and chips and scratches down to the metal caused by such things as snow between tailgate and bed. have 3 older chevrolet trucks and none of the others have this problem. *ak

On the advice of council, i have been instructed to outline and document to general motors corp. details concerning a vehicle incident that took place on january 29, 2004, approximately 7:45 pm, while driving our 2003 chevy silverado 2500hd [xxx] my wife and i were driving on s.r. 224 east of findlay at 40mph when without warning, the entire front end locked up on the vehicle (later duplicated by the service technician at lariche chevrolet in findlay, ohio) throwing my wife and i violently against our restraints. this resulted in a total loss of control and inability to move the vehicle from oncoming traffic. we were stranded in the middle of a road that is frequented by semi trailers and vehicles traveling in the 55-60mph range, and were completely unable to get the vehicle to move. the vehicle would not go forward or backward. after pushing the 2wd/4wd buttons frantically on the dash and shifting from park to reverse to drive, the vehicle finally moved in reverse (2wd). i then shifted to drive and was able to pull into a nearby driveway. after testing the vehicle up and down the driveway, we proceeded to get off the main road and went directly home (approximately 0.5 miles). the vehicle was towed to lariche chevrolet the following morning. Power train & transmission, clunks & slips quite often on acceleration and sometimes will downshift unexpectedly at lower speeds. *ak

Tailgate cables on 2003 silverado - premature rusting and possible failure. inspected tailgate cables and found them to be rusting already underneath the plastic coating. the truck is only 18 mos old. they haven't broke yet, but i fear personal injury due to the frequent use of the tailgate - especially standing on it loading & unloading boxes and cargo. reluctantly, i might have to purchase another set of (defective) cables.*ak

Vehicle safety: quadrasteer (4 wheel steer) maneuverability when sliding on ice. was driving my chevrolet 1500hd crew cab 4x4 quadrasteer pickup 30 mph (in 40 mph zone) and coming around a right hand bend in the road when the truck hit ice on the road. the vehicle immediately started to slide off the road to the right. the quadrasteer was on and engaged. at this speed the quadrasteer has the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction of the front wheels. as the truck was sliding to the right, i responded as convention dictates, which is to turn into the slide to maintain control of the vehicle. when i turned the steering to the right (into the slide), the rear wheels turned to the left, which almost instantly put the truck in a free slide now going slide ways because the rear wheel steering caused the back of the truck to come around from the left side. the quadrasteer system in a vehicle's free slide acted counter-intuitively and put the vehicle completely out of control in the free-slide. the rear wheels complete for control against the front wheels control and make the outcome of the slide on ice even more unpredictable. additionally, nowhere in the driving manual, which comes with the truck, does it state anything about the driving control being different from conventional handling when the vehicle is in a free slide on ice or snow. there are no warnings in the manual to a give heads up for this potential problem, nor is there any safety device in the quadrasteer system which would help one overcome the complications brought upon by the quadrasteer in this situation. *ak

Steering wheel intermittently locked up, mostly when making right turns, and some when making left turns. vehicle had been at dealer on three occasions. dealer replaced the serpentine belt and the left hub. however, dealer was unable to resolve this problem. *ak

While driving at 65 mph on the highway, the driver lost control of the vehicle, resulting in a frontal collision. the vehicle went into an embankment. upon impact, the air bags did not deploy. the driver sustained injuries. *ak broken sternum, spine and ribs. the consumer was wearing his seat belt. the sdm crash down load from the crash was sent to odi with pictures of the vehicle. cw *mr *jb

Service four wheel drive light comes on. this truck has been to the dealership three times to have the sensor replaced. no apparent cause and no fix for it.*ak

Fuel pump failure. with only 10266 miles on odometer, the fuel pump failed causing the vehicle to stall in heavy highway traffic. we were nearly hit by other vehicles numerous times before making it to a shoulder. *jb

In my opinion... the abs system on my 2003 chevrolet silverado 1500 fails to work properly. upon brake application @ speed... all four wheels consistantly "lock-up"... tires squeal... and vehicle is unstable. upon visiting the dealer two times... the chevrolet dealer states abs system is functioning properly. the salesman @ the dealership states he has heard the same complaints from several silverado owners... and the problem lies within the tires. this raises my concern that chevrolet has not engineered the oem tires to be properly matched to the abs system... creating an unsafe and non-functional abs braking system. i expect my abs system to grunt... growl... groan... and the brake pedal to pulsate... but, not "lock-up" all four wheels!!! i previously owned 2001 and 2002 chevrolet trucks... and i didn't notice this problem. if this is the best chevrolet can do... then i'll be looking look for a ford... a dodge... or maybe a new full-size nissan truck in 2004. have you received any similar complaints? *ak

While driving 25 mph the vehicle was involved in a frontal collision. upon impact, the front air bags did not deploy. the driver sustained neck and back injuries. *ak *sc

At any speed when pressing the brakes pedal would go to the floor and feel spongy. also, when pressing the brakes vehicle will take an extremely long time to stop. dealer had the vehicle four times concerning this problem. the dealer informed the consumer that the brakes were designed that way. *ak *nm

At 6,130 miles the message "check 4x4" was displayed. at the same time, the 4x4 control buttons went inoperable. the 4x4 system was completely disable and inoperable. onstar confirmed vehicle required service. redwood city boardwalk found "mode switch shorted, replaced mode switch" and the problem was corrected. dealer replaced switch module with different color (gray) module than was provided with the truck new (black), gray does not match dashboard.*ak

At 4,702 miles the "check engine" message displayed. onstar confirmed truck required service within seven days. boardwalk chevrolet in redwood city diagnost the problem as "pcm not reading throttle angle" and the problem was correct.*ak

Upon depressing four wheel drive indicator consumer notice vehicle did not respond to the shift change. vehicle was traveling in two wheel drive. *ak

There were forged aluminum wheels in which 8 hub cap nuts came loose on their own. the consumer was concerned that hub cap might fly off while the vehicle was in motion. *ak a local dealer suggested that this was a common problem and the new replacement hub caps have the same problem. *sc *jb

While driving at any speed vehicle drifted to the left. consumer took vehicle to two different dealers, who had done four alignments, but the problem still persists. *ak

My daughter had an accident in our 2003 chevrolet 1500 series pickup truck due to a steering problem. she was making a left turn at a low speed and said something went wrong with the steering. it made a popping/grinding sound, spun her in a circle and caused her to hit a curb and then a yield sign. we had the truck towed to the dealer because i thought it sounded like a mechanical problem. the dealer contacted gm and they said that the damage would have to be repaired before anyone could check out the steering. the damage has been repaired, but the dealer said they could find nothing wrong with the steering. i don't believe that especially since i read an article regarding the recall of certain gm cars whose drivers experienced the exact same problem. i also read in the article that nhtsa is investigating the 2500 and 3500 series trucks and feel that the 1500 series should also be investigated.*ak

Truck leans to left. took to dealer and was informed new leaf spring was ordered. *ak

Lights for instrument panel occasionally does not work. battery died. radio made loud humming noise even when car shut off overnight. air conditioner broke. but the continual problem is the 4wd becomes inoperable and service 4wd message appears. gm has no repair. they state i must stop turn off the vehicle and restart it in order to "wake up" the electronics. it has been in the repair shop 4 times in last six months when i bought it new. the dangerous part is while driving in ice and snow the vehicle's 4wd became inoperable resulting in loss of control of vehicle and a near miss crash. *cb

While applying the brakes, the pedal went to the floor. the driver pumped the brake pedal and the brakes released power. the consumer was able to drive the vehicle to the dealer for analysis. *jb *jb

While driving 50 mph or more the rear of the vehicle experienced poor stability and was unsafe to drive. the dealer stated that the vehicle was operating as designed. *ak *nm

Rattle sound around the windshield. dealer tried to say it was the tires out of balance when the truck was brand new. after 3 visits to the dealer the problem still exists. *la

When turning the steering wheel towards the left it locked up, causing the consumer to lose control of the vehicle. *ak when turning and driving, there was a pop in the front end. *scc *jb

Vehicle pulls to the right very hard. has been worked on 5 times, and has been aligned 3 times. vehicle still pulls to the right. dealer was unable to fix it. traveling about 65 mph, you can let the steering wheel go and you will be off the road in about 2 seconds. *la

There is a knock or a hard pecking felt in the steering wheel. especially when on rough highways and while turning. dealer has been notified 3 times. they replaced the steering shaft intermediate. fixed the problem but it came back about after 6 weeks. took it back down to the dealer but they didn't replace anything the second time? problem still exists. *la

Steering wheel binds while stopped and turning the steering wheel or taking off and turning. if backing up slowly or moving forward slowly and turning through parked cars could cause vehicle to crash into one when the steering binds up. also could cause a crash while turning and steering binds and causes the vehicle to go into the ditch. dealer has been notified 3 times. they replaced the shaft assembly and gear box. but the problem still exists. *la

When taking off from a stop transmission slips, causing vehicle to fail to move, then engages when rpms is high causing vehicle to jerk into gear. can be very dangerous when pulling into a intersection and vehicle fails to move. i have almost wrecked several times because of the delay. does not happen all the time dealership has been notified 7 times and failed to fix it. *la

Passenger side exterior mirror defroster not working. *la

Involved in a 45 mph collision with another vehicle. airbags in my 2003 chevrolet silverado did not deploy.*ak

4 wheel drive becomes non operative and the dash light turns off and message service 4 wheel drive comes on. the vehicle has been to the dealer 4 times and they cannot fix it. *la

Brakes needed replacement at 2,000 miles due to frontand rear rotors being out of round. my initial complaint was due to a very loud noise each morning upon initial braking. sound was not a normal brake squeal. work order shows h0042 1.0+.8+1.8 o.l.h due to rear brakes. *ak

On one occasion the viehicle shifted into towing mode by itself, without any reason, (ie: no buttons pressed). yesterday, the truck shifted into 4wd - low range at highway speed by itself without any reason. this caused the front wheels to temporarily screech and the engine to over-rev. i stopped the truck on the side of the road, turned it off and then the 4wd control panel was inoperative and the service 4wd indicator was on. i took the truck to my local dealer, they told me they didn't have time to diagnose the problem right then, but not to worry because the error code would be stored and they could retrieve it after lunch. i took it back after lunch, and no error code. this is the third time i've had the truck in on 4wd problems, but the first time that the problems have presented a real danger. i had the truck in five times with transmission problems without a fix. *jb

Original goodyear tires have no traction in wet conditions. vehicle has hydroplaned several times while traveling cautiously slow in wet weather. *ak
