2003 CHEVROLET Cavalier

The steering wheel is loose. Pins on tilt mechanism are gone. Don’t know when it fell out. Noticed when cleaning car when i tilted the steering wheel up.

. Lights signal does not flash it just called so it doesn’t look like my cart is trying to term when they lie signal is on than lights go on and off I have had it Checked and was told there was a recall and many things on my car

Throttle stuck and began accelerating. When I attempted to break it continurd to accelerate. Put into netural and RPMs stayed reved break would not stop car. Turned off engion and rolled to stop. When I turned the car back on, engion was still idoling fast and RPMs were high. Luckly this was on the back roads before I got onto interstate, could have been extermely dangerous!! Did a little research and noticed this was an issue for 1996 cavaliers and recall issued. However there has not been a recall for 2003’s yet.

I noticed the paint started coming off in a small area of the roof in 2006 and thought maybe it was dinged by a stone but within several years the paint really started coming off on the roof, trunk and hood. Now the whole top of my car really looks awful and it is moving down the side. I took it to a repair shop and they said it was obvious the paint and clear coat were at fault. I have taken excellent care of my car and only have 16,998 miles on it. Other cars from that year do not have the problem as far as I can see.

paint peeling on roof, hood and trunk, tried to contact gm with no luck. gm should fix this since it was gm that didn’t put proper clear coat on.

I have a 2003 Chevy Cavalier ls. I love it the only problem is the paint is starting to peel the clear coating could i get a free paint job the car is kept in the garage and is taken care of i love the car i used to work for Valley Chevrolet and if I was better I would go and paint it but I cant I had a major heart attack and cant work anymore and I have oxygen I worked for Kenny Wallace since it opened we always wanted a black car because they really show the quality of the car the only problem is the paint if you could find someway to help me i would really appreciate it I am 73 years old and cant afford to get it painted I used to be a body and fender man for Valley Chevrolet I polish the car and do not abuse it it is like brand new if the paint was recalled I was in the hospital with a heart attack in 2006 thank you robert slovinski my dad only bought black cars and this never happened to any of his which now he is deceased

Almost all of my paint on the roof, hood and trunk has faded. Every car with this same make, model and around the same year that I see has this same problem. This has to be a problem from the manufactorer. Aren’t I entitled to get this problem fixed without coming deeper out of my pocket?

While driving at 45 – 50 mph on the highway the transmission completely failed, without warning and the wheels on the car locked up. The car came to a complete stop without warning and 3 cars swerved off the road to avoid a rear end collision. Once out of the car it could not even be pushed off the road. The mechanic noted that all the egears were broken and the transmission could not even be rebuilt. A transmission had to be pulled from totalled Cavalier and rebuilt to get my car running. Without the rebuilt transmission, parts could have cost up to $2500 plus labor. I was disappointed/scared that such a thing could happen without warning. Had I been driving on the interstate I could have been killed or seriously injured if another car had hit us. I was disappointed because I take very good care of my car and have never had any serious problems with it.

When I come to a stop, turn the corner, or even try to get off of a ramp, my car stalls when you push the clutch in. When the clutch is pushed in fully the rpm drops to zero and the car dies. If I\’m going fast enough, the car pops it\’s clutch and continues again until I push the clutch in again. Also, when I\’m turning corners and the car dies on me, the steering wheel locked up, and I have to pull excessively so that I don\’t hit others. This is a huge risk of my life and others the few times that I\’ve had it checked out, the maintenance people found nothing.

The instrument panel is faulty. First the Tachometer started acting up, the needle moves the correct distances, but it doesn’t correspond with the numbers. Sometimes it goes all the way around. Then a few months later the speedometer started acting up, at first, only when it was really hot outside and the dashboard got hot. Now, in November, it’s doing it more regular. At times it will say I’m going 65 when I’m going 40, and it will stay 25 mph off no matter my speed. Other times, the difference will continue to grow, and the needle will eventually point straight down. As of yet, the temp and fuel gauges still work fine. Also, the backlight for the odometer is inoperative. I’ve talked to a relative who is a mechanic, and was told it’s a bad circuit board and to replace it will run about $250 if we replace it ourselves. I also have found a way to reset the speedometer until the next time it acts up. When the engine is not running, I turn the key as if I’m going to start it, except I stop just before the starter kicks in. Each time I do this, the speedometer backs up about 10 MPH. I repeat until it’s at zero, and it works fine for awhile.

Over the July 4 holiday just about everything went wrong with the car,it is now in the process of having the transmission rebuilt the brakes and steering are supposley my imagination,I have only had the car for six months and it already needs a transmission and when I get it back I am afraid to put my three kids back in it,bought a new car so I didnt have these kinda problems and this is worse than my used car and wont this depreciate the value of the car

on 12/20/04 my Chevrolet Cavalier lost power on a major highway. I had to immediately pull off the road and ended up hitting a guardrail. After 9 days at the dealership I was told by the dealer and General Motors that they would not pay for the collision repairs due to the fact that they could not duplicate the problem and the car was running up to GM standards. No way. The car lost power on that day and I ended up in a wreck. My own car insurance had to pick up the collision damage and since they could not find a problem I now have a car that I feel is unsafe.

My ABS and brake light came on daily. I brought my car in 4 times for them to “fix” the problem until they finally replaced the brake system computer and hopes that it will fix the problem for good. My battery died in the middle of the repairs and they had to replace that too because I had a short in my battery. Recently my car has not been starting and is very lugged down. Sometimes when you try to turn the car over, there is no power to the electric windows or radio/cd until you turn the key off and restart the car. The lugging down on my car has been there for most of the time that I have owned my car. I brought my car in after 3 months of owning it for them to re-set my transmission computer too. I am planning on bringing in my car for the issue with starting.

in the 15 months i have owned this car (bought new) i have had to have repaired a power window switch, a power window motor, fan switch line repaired twice, ac compressor, electric fan, two new rotors brake lights numerous times finally found out it was not the bulbs but the connection have made 8 trips to dealer for repairs this is ridiculous when i stopped at a stop sign one day car cut off for no reason had to put it in park and restart but dealer found nothing wrong so they say i wonder every day what is next is this how it should be of course not

I\’ve only had this car for 1 yr. 2mos.after purchase the brakes & water pump had to be replaced. The car constantly leaks oil in which I had to keep going back to mechanic. Then 3mos, later the engine had to be replaced. Even after the engine was replaced the car still shakes when I come to a stop. Also for whatever reason the only way that I can keep the car from overheating is to to turn on the a/c. In which the a/c does not turn off even when the motor is off and the mechanic/s ( I have been to 3) can not figure out why The a/c stays on meanwhile this is running down the battery So I have to jump start it just about every morning. In order to avoid jump starting the car, I have go under the hood and remove a piece that is connected to a/c every time that I turn off the motor. Even though a/c is on, no air comes out and there is no heat (it has not been repaired). When I make turns, the car make a loud clunking and rubbing sound. And transmission plate has to keep being put back into place.

I have not fixed the windshield wiper yet. It has seemed to come undone from the power to move it. I have gotten the fuel pump fixed. It was driving fine and then the car just stopped. The dealership that first looked at it said they had just replaced a fuel pump in another 2003 Cavalier shortly before and they said the owner described it as happening the same way. I feel that this may be a defect that needs to be recalled.

I did not get it fixed yet. My fuel gauge is showing a half a tank more than what i have in the tank. and my rpm gauge has been erratic as well. This is dangerous because the car can run out of fuel.when the fuel tank is full the gauge is hitting the temperature gauge piece.

I bought my car in March and the very next day, my speedometer started to act up. I called the dealer back that day and I was first told that it has been sitting a while and that it would be fine once I started driving it more. They also told me that the car went through a complete inspection, and if it kept acting up they would pay for it. From that point on, I kept getting the run around everytime I tried to call to keep complaining about the speedometer, and also the lights kept dimming. They come back on if you hit the dashboard. This is a serious safety issue, and I did call GM and they couldn\’t help me either.

i bought a chev cavallier 2003 the paint is fading off on it i was informed that G .M know ther was a problem with the pain on the 2003 and still put it on the market i called g.m thay said it was fading because the car was old the dealer i bought it from said it was bad paint but g.m probley wouldnt do any thing about it because i havent spent a lot there on repare i have a very small income so i take it were i can aford to i think it is wrong g .m got all this money from the goverment as in our tax dollors and wont be made to stand by thair cars please can you help me my number is 410-335-6132 or443-527-9007 thank you

electrical cluster defect. while driving on freeway speedometer gage started to act irradict, heat indicator spiked to 260 degrees but when checked engine was ok. at tom bell chevrolet redlands ca. dealership confirmation that cluster was in need of repair. according to web site this is national problem. cherolet is so backed up with repair orders it takes up to three weeks.this type of defect could cause electrical fire under dash board, smoke inhalation injury, accident or death. i have filed a complaint with NHTSA 1-800-424-9393 others must do the same to initiate a recall and force GM to stop, knowingly selling vehicles with a defective part.

1. both brake lights went out w/in month of each other. in the months of July and August.2. brakes noisy, September3. Trunk would not open, October4. Brakes noisy, again, November5. Car turns off in the middle of an intersection after making a complete stop and trying to speed up. Freaking out, I pressed the gas and moved the key in the ignition, then put car in park and got it to start, November. It just seems to me that I have a disfunctional car that when I dont have something wrong with one thing I have to go in to the dealer for another. Its a new car and its costing me more problmes and inconviniences than the old ’96 I had till I bought this one.

The clear coat has come of and now the paint all over the entire vehicle is coming off and rusting on the hood.

In 2008 we contacted the dealer and GM and complained about the paint coming off the roof of the car. GM said it was not their responsibility. I contacted the General Manager of Chevy in July 2008 and did not even get a response. The paint problem has moved to the trunk so we took to be repainted. The shop that we took it to said it was a faulty prep by Chevy that caused this problem. I am not sure where to go now or if it is too late. In readying your website it looks as if GM does have a warrant for the paint, which we were in the time period. In 2010 the motor to the power window stop and we took it to the dealer for repair, not knowing if there was any recall on this that we did not receive but they did not indicate that there was.

I have a 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier, I purchased it in 2007. My clear coat is pealing off of my roof in huge areas, and around the seam of my trunk. I have taken very good care of my car, even parking in a garage every night. I have recently called the cusomer service number to file a complaint, after reviewing this websit and finding out that GM will repaint your car for 6 or more years. They told me that there was nothing they could do and had no idea what website I was talking about, and had never heard about the paint complaints, and the ability to have it reapainted. They told me that since there was no recalls on the paint they would not repaint my car. I am writing this letter to further my compaint and try to seek help. I still owe 4000 on my car and have had it less than 3 years. I will be devestated if you will not help me with my problem, especially after reading the information on the web page. Also, if this problem is not resolved I will never buy another GM car again.

At a very early stage the Paint on my Chevy Cavalier started peeling off due to what I believe is a defective color or clear coat. I am working on Chevy to repaint the car free of charge.
 
All gauges on the car went haywire after just 3 years of owning the car. They don’t work at all. I have no idea how much gas I have, how fast i’m going, or the temperature. Chevy would not fix it due to my limited warranty which had expired. I was quoted about 500-600 to have it fixed. I tried to tell them it was a safety issue and there should have been a recall.

Various problems with 2003 chevrolet cavalier.*mr the vehicle tail light shorted out three times then the circuit shorted out. the gas gauge would fluctuate. cold starts. the vehicle would hesitate at stop light or stall out completely. the driver' s side speaker blew. the cd player would eject the cd while it was playing. the rpm gauge bounced. the fuel pump was replaced. the alternator made noise. *nm

The vehicle was undergoing repair for a minor vehicle accident that occurred on 11/11/04. it was determined that the vehicle had a previous accident and the airbags had been previously removed without being replaced. diagnostics on the airbag module showed that the airbags had been deployed and were missing. the airbag dash warning indicator also has been disabled somehow. none of these deficiencies were reported at the time of the vehicle purchase. it is uncertain when the original repair was made and by whom. the accident on 11/11/04 was not severe enough for the airbags to deploy. no injuries resulted from the missing airbags.

My car has the same problem with the instrument cluster that was recalled for other gm vehicles. the fuel level gauge, temperature gauge, rpm, speedometer.... none of my gauges work. they gave the wrong readings, the hand wouldn't return to their starting positions, then the hands went lower than their starting positions to the point they all didn't work anymore. this car needs to be added to the gm recall list for the same problem.

I was one block from home and my car stalled it wouldn't start back up. i found my self at the intersection. the mechanic said it is a bad fuel pump. the car only has 60,000 miles. this happened about this time last year . also last year my gauge to my engine temperature went out of control. i can't tell the engine temp. anymore.

Takata recall

Cluster of dashboard indicators (speedometer, gas guage , engine temp, rpm) all are not working now. they were going off and on at times when driving but now nothing works...my mechanic informs me this is a common problem with this make and model. no recall found. very dangerous to drive why wasn't this common problem listed as a recall when many have complained??

My 2003 chevrolet cavalier recently began to make a clunking noise, which can also be felt, in the front end. when i put it up on a lift, i noticed that the sub-frame was rusting (deteriorating). i know it is 13 years old, but my parents owned a 1989 cavalier z24 for 20 years, and they didn't have any problems with its frame. i've read that other people have had this same issue with their 2003 chevy cavaliers. why is this? why has there not been a recall? my family has owned several new and used vehicles, all gm, and we have never seen a sub-frame rust to this extent. we are a gm family and are extremely disappointed in gm's lack of response to this safety hazard.

"check engine" light keeps coming back on for the same issue, supposedly the "air intake temp sensor, replaced that one and several sensors repeatedly, had the complete wiring harness connections checked and cleaned, even replaced my ecm and bcm [neither of which was cheap], and still has "check engine" light, even after being "cleared" over and over again -- this car was well maintained and the body and sub-frame are severely rotting out left and right -- had a weird leak on the pass. side front, under the dash. it comes and goes. the car smells like an old sneaker inside. water would pour out of the passenger side heater duct, but there was no rhyme or reason to it. one i even had soap foam from a drive thru car wash literally come blowing in to the cabin, thru the very same heater duct. thankfully it has seemingly cleared up, but it is still a head scratcher. i've taken my car to several dealerships, privately owned shops, and even had some "car savvy" friends look her over, as well as my dad [ands ase certified tech], and the check engine light still comes back every time. if i would have known i'd put this much money into a car that literally ready to break apart, i would have saved my money to put towards another car. live and learn, i guess. she was doing so well for 10 or 11 years and it's like she just started "giving up" on me. she's got 165k on her and the pain has gone to crap, but that's gm for you, kept her garaged, waxed regularly, had her looking showroom new, until recently, the paint's clear coat started to "stipple" [sharp bumps] and bubble all over top panels, starting with the roof, then hood, and now trunk. it's embarrassing to drive her, and i am not paying to repaint her, i already have way too much into a car that likely will not pass inspection coming up in august. i'm now handicap'd and disabled, fixed income, can't afford a new car.

Instrumet cluster problems for a few years. fuel sending unit has been replaced at about 52,000 miles after quiting twice while driving highway speed of 55 mph. dealer claimed the car quit because of a bad battery the first time and did not diagnose the problem correctly. it was not the battery. the fuel sending unit intermittently reads well beyond full and interfears with the temperature gage function. now speedometer is stuck at 85 mph while turned off. i was driving with the cruise doing 67 mph, i slowed down to make a turn at an at grade insection to a road posted at 55 mph. i completed the turn and sped up. the speedometer read 58 mph but it felt llike i was gong about 30 mph. i stopped at another intersection and the speed dropped to 40 mph. i made the turn and acelerated and the speed went to 110 mph but i was not going near that fast. the car is in driveway turned off but the speedometer reads 85 mph. most recent issue is steering rack and k-frame rusted out and needed to be replaced. mechanic stated he never saw a steering rack rust out or a k frame rusted as bad as the one on this vehicle. we are the original owners.

I have noticed a lot and i mean a lot of these cavaliers have had horrible frame problems i use to work on cars everyday until the last year when i got out of the mechanics field an now i own a 03 chevy cavalier its a two door 5 speed 2.2 i was on my way home from the store and i felt something rubbing so i stopped an got out to find out my k frame was horribly rotted an broke now this vehicle is 13 years old but as rotted out as it was it wasn't something that just happened its been bad i was just the lucky owner that the frame gave out on an i demand to know why this isn't a recall another thing is i owned a 98 ford f150 which had recalls an when i was sent the letter about the recalls i asked ford why the frames on the f150 or ranger wasn't a recall they had no answer. i put my child in these auto makers cars and trust their work to keep him safe but they have no answer for why one of the most important part on the whole vehicle is falling apart. i don't know if they need to use stainless steel, aluminum, or what but it needs fixed or the vehicles need reimbursed an crushed. i could of been doing 70 mph down the highway with my woman an son in the car an the frame could of went and killed us all. is that what its gonna take to get this [xxx] fixed someone else to die/hurt. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

I was looking at my local news station and a man had called the investigation team about cracks in his dashboard so they could get in touch with gm about it because nothing was being done to resolve the problem. i have cracks in my dashboard and part of it was cracked so bad it came out and it is big enough for me to sit an apple in. the man who brought the story to attention was concerned about the cracks over the airbag that if it ever came out that debris from the dashboard would fly everywhere and that would be hazardous to the occupants of the car. this is a concern to me now because the cracks started out small but got bigger over time. i'm almost sure that there will be more cracks appearing especially when the weather gets hot and my car is not always in the heat or in areas where the hot sun is beaming down on it. to me that would be considered as a defect for that to just happen. i also have a ford escort 2000 model and the same thing is happening to that dashboard. i can take photos but i don't know how to upload them on the computer, tell me other ways i can send photos if possible. my vehicle is mostly stationary at my home address whenever i am not at work and i never hardly use the freeways. there has definitely been no tampering with my vehicle. the story i saw on the news was aired i believe last week or the week before.

Metal on metal noise found out shoes and rotors are damageddamaged. i have no money. v can't fix this. smell inside of leak. temp running high. 200.

July 2009 ignition lock cylinder was stuck. i had it replaced for $362.75 at chevrolet dealership. august 2014 ignition lock cylinder was stuck. i had it replaced for $488.83 at chevrolet dealership. september 2015 ignition lock cylinder was stuck, my key came out of lock and the car was still running. i had to come off of the clutch to purposely make the car cut off and had to unplug the battery. the 2003 chevrolet is not included in the recall but it needs to be. my ignition lock cylinder has failed me 3 times in the past 6 years. thankfully, i'm alive and able to tell you all about this. chevrolet & gm knew about the lock cylinder recall when i had mine replaced last year.

The dashboard pieces have started to crack bad. i replaced the console piece but they dont make a replacement for the strip along the bottom of windshield. its got chunks missing out of it.

Steering wheel and shroud became totally disengaged and fell into my lap while trying to turn onto livernois road making it impossible for me to steer vehicle.lucky i was leaving post office after mailing letters and not while on freeway. *tr

I had been reading about recent recalls with gm, especially ignition switches. i have a 2003 chevy cavalier and it was diagnosed with a bad ignition switch. i first noticed when i went to start the car in the morning, a day after coming home from work. good thing it happened then because i would have been stranded off site. i went to start the car, nothing happened except wipers and radio did not work as well which i thought was strange. finally the radio at least came on at some point, but car still would not start. after it was fixed they said the ignition switch was bad and the mechanic asked if i had looked for the recall on it. i searched online but did not find it. i know my car is older, however of all the cars i ever owned and i had many, i never had any issues with ignition switches! i think i had one of the defective switches and would like to look into this matter. unfortunately i probably can't go back to get the physical ignition switch at this point, too late. i have the proper paperwork for it however. also on another note, my rear driver side signal keeps going out, no matter how many times i replace it. that might be something gm should look into as well. *tr

My son was pulling into a parking lot and as he describes it, everything but the radio went dead all by itself (the engine died and there was no power steering or brakes). obviously the same symptoms as the current recalls. i called the dealer and was told the car isn't on the list. i've complained to chevy and am getting the runaround by multiple members of their "consumer support team" (we've assigned you a service request number but i am to wait until it happens again and then bring it in "so we could start reviewing on your case"). i took it to my own mechanic and he ran a bunch of tests but couldn't find anything that would cause the car to die. *tr

2006 chevrolet cobalt & 2003 cavalier. consumer writes in regards to both vehicles power steering and cutting off problems. *smd the consumer stated the cavalier, cut off, just like the cobalt. however, the cobalt was recalled. the cavalier cut off weekly since it was purchased. the power steering was replaced during a recall. it was replaced at 35,000 miles and again at 68,000. *jb updated 08/07/14 *jb updated 09/24/14. *jb

Cluster defect: purchased a 2003 chevy cavalier brand new off the lot in december of 2002. just after 5 years and approximately 55,000 miles, we are driving down the highway during snowfall while the speedometer stated we were traveling at 65 miles per hour, we did not know that the speedometer was not reading correctly until we got to a corner and the speedometer showed we were driving at about 20 mph when we were flying at atleast 50 mph which indicated the speedometer was about 30 mph off. then the tachometer would stop working, get stuck, or not operate correctly. i then began to have problems with all of the gauges, the gas gauge needle would go backwards on top of the temperature gauge causing the temperature gauge to stop working then all gauges would malfunction, then they would stop working completely. i took it into the chevy dealership, they came back to me and said it's working fine, there's nothing wrong with it. and again and again and again the gauges continue to go haywire chevy stated when i took the vehicle in that they have never heard of such a complaint and i told them to look it up on the internet, there are hundreds/thousands of complaints regarding this problem. currently none of my gauges are working and am having to use a gps to navigate speed and fill my vehicle up every 4 days because i have no idea when the car is on empty. it is high time something be done about this. chevy recalled a bunch of other models, but not the cars. something has to be done about this and quickly before someone is killed. or does it take a death or many more to get someone's attention that this problem needs to be addressed. please investigate this defect further. there are too many of us out there that are dealing with this problem and are just keeping quiet about it. this problem definitely warrants a recall and fast. Went to start car to go to store and it would not start. luckily it was at home when it decided to stop working. towed to garage and they said it was the fuel pump. the garage replaced the fuel pump and it fixed the no start issue. i had no idea that this was the process to start a recall investigation or i would have said long ago. there has been lots of recalls lately on gm and this same cavalier decided not to start twice after the fuel pump, once in 2011 was the timing chain then again december 2012 that i still have to diagnose which led me to research recalls. each time the car stopped working luckily it was in my driveway each and every time. the timing chain there was some warning, it would sometimes buck, other times it was fussy on starting and it would stall at stop lights. i will report a new issue if i can find out the 3rd unknown 2012 issue. *tr

Erratic instrument panel..sometimes after turning ignition key on all panel lights stay on (beyond normal)and all gauges go off..sometimes ok when starting but some lights come on (air bag, service eng, abs gas gauge, etc) after driving ..sometimes all instr gauges go out completely while driving including speedometer...they sometimes come back on and sometimes not...i entered my make and year on google to see if other owners have similar problem and found out many do..interesting to note that while researching on google i found out chev trucks in year 2003 had a recall due to faulty instrument panel controls but the autos were not recalled.. i feel this is a definite safety hazard since i sometimes have to drive with no speedometer, gas gauge and an airbag light that stays on. i do not feel safe driving this vehicle for any length of time and have to resort to only short trips (grocery store, dr appts, etc) i would like to know why gm has not recalled this 2003 chevy cavalier..esp when they have recalled the same yr and make trucks for faulty instr panels.. i feel this faulty instr panel is placing me in a very dangerous position each time i get behind the wheel and needless to say do not feel safe driving this auto at all... *tr

On or about march 8th, 2014, i noticed that holes had appeared on the drivers and passenger side of the vehicle on the bottom and when i went to further exam the hole, i then realized the underside of the car is completely corroded. the sheet metal on the passengers side is coming off in sheets and the hole has become much larger in size. also, the vehicle pulls to the left and right pretty strongly. the inside floor of the car feels squishy like the floor is going to fall out. higher speeds seem to make more sheet metal fall off. *tr

After i drive car for 5 then system security light comes, and many other lights come on dash board and all the gauges dropped to zero. pepboys says it is bad bcm. *tr

When shifting auto transmission into reverse gear from park the clip that holds the shift cable onto the shift lever on the transmission broke. dealer told me that entire shift cable must be purchased to get the small clip that holds cable end to transmission shift lever. i went to a local junk yard to find this small clip (part) and was astonished to find that every auto of this year and make had the similar problem. all of these autos has the cable wired to the shift lever. some used a wire tie to secure the lever to cable. the tow truck driver who responded to tow my vehicle said he sees this problem "all the time". when i called the local chevy dealer they said they were out of stock for this cable and clip and had to order it. this may also indicate that this problem is wide spread. if this shift cable were to fall off while trying to manually shift the auto transmission, well, i am sure you understand the results. *tr

The entire instrument cluster panel completely went hay wire and the speed would increase and decrease. everything was flashing to the point it was actually scary. i pulled over to the side of the road and it stilled continued. i finally decided to continue home and after about 6 miles it finally just stopped. i researched this problem on the internet and have found that so many more have experienced the same thing happening but some have had their car actually start on fire. please advise if there is any recall in the near future before someone has to lose their life over this. thank you so much for any consideration. *tr

Coasting down hill on a dirt road, got to the bottom and engine had died. rolled to a stop and would not restart. towed to a mechanic, replaced fuel pump. this happened twice more and each time the fuel pump was bad. the last fuel pump only lasted 3 months and like the two previous pumps, it was brand new!! this is 3 bad fuel pumps in a year and my wallet can't afford to keep this up. why is there not a recall on this? *tr

Driving at low speed. steering wheel experienced excessive side play. made appointment at local mechanic (non-dealer) steering housing taken off and found one of two pins in the steering column for the tilt mechanism half way out of housing. mechanic reinserted pin and attempted to restake pin in housing. experienced no side play after repair for about 1 week and problem has resurfaced. *tr

My boyfriend was driving our car. i was in the passenger seat. we had been driving on the interstate for about a mile. then the car stalled. my friend realized something was wrong when he hit the gas pedal and there was no response, so he placed it in neutral, steered and signaled until he got us and the car safely off the road. after, the car was towed into the dealers shop the mechanics said it was the fuel pump that had failed to work. therefore, a new fuel pump was installed in the car. *tr

I was turning left on to a street and i heard a loud boom and then the car just came to a stop. i got out of the vehicle and the rim was snapped in half. this caused my air bags to deploy. *tr

When driving on a long trip, i noticed that the speedometer kept increasing after each time i stopped the car. when i stopped, the speed read 25. i went 45 mph, it went to 70 mph. etc. it now rests in vertical position facing down. the gas gauge has also begun to go haywire. i also noticed that the car would longer can go into cruise control (without working for a few minutes then shutting off), i am thinking because of the speedometer or cluster. either way, it now no longer works at all. seeing everyone's complaints on here and with "government motors" not doing anything about it, i will not put my trust in their brand on any future vehicles. this also happened on my 2005 cavalier. good thing for a gps... *tr

The problem is with the speedometer. i was traveling at what i thought was about 40 mph and i looked down and my speedometer showed 65 mph. when i cam to a stop my speedometer only went down to 25 mph. the next morning it was down to 0. one week later it went up and didn't go below 35 mph and it has kept increasing. now when i get in the car the speedometer is at 95mph. this is a huge safety issue. please issue a recall for these items. the cost to repair is $500 and makes it too expensive for it to be feasible. *tr

Was at a stop light and car just konked out and would not start again. i tried and tried but to no avail. had to push it into a gas station about 100 yards, not easy as a 50 year old female (no one stopped to help me, just sped by). i have seen hundreds of complaints on-line that this has been an habitual problem with this make and model. it only has 71,000 miles on it and i just purchased the first part of 2012???? what is up? this many problems should have involved a recall! *tr

I have a 2003 chevy cavalier stalls : changed the fuel pump , pressure solenoid switch ,torque converter clutch solenoid .tired of this and no one doing anything about it still stalls and all everyone can do is guess at what it is i hate my cavalier the last three years i had problems with the catalytic converter got that fixed after three converters help. *tr

My gauge cluster went out while going down the highway. very unsafe, i was unsure of the heat of the engine and it is one of the hotter days of the year!!!! looked on-line and found how common this issue is. i cant see how much gas i have, how hot my car is, how fast im going, or how hard my car is working. if this piece of equipment is failing so widely it needs to be recalled!!!!!!!!! very very very unsafe. tried to take to advanced and they wont read the code as its not a standard code (?) gm you are loosing customers fast and putting thousands of lives at risk by letting this continue to go past you and all for the sake of a little money to fix a problem you sold to us? if you can recall the same issue on some of your trucks you can on this car as well, discontinued or not. *js

At approx. 67k my fuel pump failed. i purchased and installed a new fuel pump, adhering to the manufacturers installation recommendations. less than 6 months later the new pump failed. the has been a recurring problem now for at least 10 fuel pumps. this installation recommendations have not changed and i have had the electrical system that powers the pump checked out as well. in each condition it was a no start "failure", leaving me stranded in each case and costing me hundreds of dollars in towing fees that are non-refundable. even though the auto parts stores have been kind enough to honor the warranty most times i have still had to pay for at least 5 of the 10 fuel pumps. that's a 1 to 1 ratio. i have also read about the condition with brushes in the motor wearing out. some of these pumps have provided 30k miles or more and others not 3k mi. this is a huge problem and i for one will not be shopping for another chevy until this problem acknowledged and resolved. i am researching my purchases/exchanges to verify the dates and will register each one of them individually. *kb

I was driving at approximately 6 am on a december morning in 2010 when the 2003 chevrolet cavalier i was driving cut off in the middle of the road. i had to push the vehicle into a parking lot to be towed to a body shop. i was informed that the fuel pump had went out and it would cost roughly $450 to fix. the mileage at the time of the incident was roughly around 87,000 miles. *tt

My husband and i went looking for a car at this dealership on oct. 31, 2010. we found this chevrolet cavalier (2003). when we bought the car it had no information on it; so i checked on carfax and found that it had couple of recalls on it; but nothing about the fuel pump. so now the car go's out won't start. i don't know what to do about this. we are on a fixed income and can't afford this right now. there was a recalled the cars from 1998 to 2002 and fixed the problem. we will have to have it fixed or get rid of it or trade it in. *tr

My car would not start after i turned it off. i banged on the gas tank with a hammer, while a coworker cranked the engine over and the fuel pumped kicked in. this resulted in the car starting; however i played it safe and had it towed home. i replaced the fuel pump and have not had any problems since. still unfortunate that the fuel pump barely lasted 100k. i believe chevy should give you a fuel pump free of charge if there is a failure within the first 200k miles. plain and simple fuel pumps should not fail as often as they do with this make/model. it's is dangerous to everyone's health, and i hope no one ever gets hurt from it. *tr

I had left my mothers and drove approximately 35 miles and started slowing to make a turn into our local grocery store when my 2003 cavalier stalled and would not restart back. upon checking i discovered there was no fuel to the fuel rail.i had just over 1/2 tank of fuel in the tank. i had another turn key and there was no whirring to indicate fuel pump was operating. i called tow service and towed it home. i dropped the tank and replaced the fuel pump and problem was resolved. another symptom not listed in the complaints when my pump failed all the gauges on the dashboard would register (fuel gauge and temp gauge) then would drop to 0 and would flicker continuously when key was turned to the on position. upon purchasing new pump assembly that the wiring harness needed to be repaired as well. you can not purchase a new harness to resolve issue had to cut the fuel pump leads off of pump wiring harness and purchase a new connector and splice them together. i feel there maybe more customers with these vehicles that had service done in a local shop that was not reported to nhtsa or to gm. as this repair was very expensive at the time and many would seek repairs for lower rates then offered by a dealership. *tr

2003 chevrolet cavalier giving off fumes first time i filled it to the top with gasoline. that eventually set off a check engine light on the dash. i used my obd2 scanner and it was a code for a high evap leak. it was too difficult to find the leak at my home, so i had the dealership do a smoke test and revealed a crack at the seams of the gas tank. dealership said no recall for that make and model. estimate for replacement and labor was $1,000. i found a salvage yard gas tank from a low mileage oldsmobile alero and the local repair shop replaced it. mechanic mentioned it is a common occurrence to find a crack at the seams of a newer gm small car with a plastic gas tank. i reset the check engine light code myself and the problem never reappeared. *kb

Speedometer sticking at 80 to 160 mph, even though the car has never ever been driven at those speeds, speedometer registars anwhere from 10mph to over the limit of the speedometer (180mph) when the car is shut off or stopped. this started at 25,000 miles on the odometer. the temperature gauge started registering over the red (and has actually touched the speedometer gauge needle) approximately 1 year later started at 32,000 miles. at 39,000 the gas gauge started doing the same thing. i have been driving with a portable garmin nuvi gps since 2008, just to use the estimated speed in the hopes i will not get a speeding ticket. the first time i looked down and saw my speedometer at 85 mph, i instinctively slammed on the brakes, and was extremely lucky no one was behind me. i was only going 50 mph at the time this happened. i now have a teen driver, and i cannot allow her to drive this car because she is not experienced enough to estimate her speeds. i will never know if my car trulely overheats because it overheats on the gauge 3-5 times a week. i have to fill my gas based on when i filled it last & how many miles i have driven since as i have no idea how much gas i have. this can be a very dangerous situation, that can lead to death and injury, as a told you my experience with instinctively slamming on the brakes, and i would hate to see what happens if i run out of gas unknowingly in the 3rd lane of an expressway. i also own a 2002 chevy cavalier whose gas gauge registars 1/4 of a tank when it is empty. i spend over $450 at a garage to find out that the car was not breaking down, but was actually running out of gas. the 2003 chevy cavalier of course has the more dangerous problem with the entire instrument cluster a mess. unfortunately, the vecicle was not still under warranty with the low mileage, as it had been over 3 years. when are you going to do something about these cars? lets hope i'm not driving in front of your mother or daughter tomorrow. *tt

I am the owner of a 2003 chevy cavalier and i have 2 complaints that should have been recalls as there are many with the same 2 problems, first every gauge in my car quit working no rpm, no gas guage and no speedometer. second ever since i bought my car for no reason at all it would just stall at redlights when i would take off, dealer said no problem, i have nearly wrecked many times because of this, the latest was today i have read many forums that say they found out it was the faulty plastic fuel pump, why no recall this is going to get someone killed. *kb

On may 31, my 2003 chevrolet cavalier ls sport stalled on a highway. i was in heavy traffic and my power steering went out, but i was luckily able to make it to the side of the road. i immediately exited my vehicle and called roadside assistance for a tow. after receiving diagnostics at a chevy dealership, it was determined that my fuel pump had gone out and had to be replaced. the cost of this and replacing a fuel filter was close to $1,000. my car only has 60,000 miles on it, i had previously replaced the fuel filter 1 year before at another gm dealership, and i performed regular maintenance on the vehicle in accordance with the user manual. when i went home i researched the issue with the car, and lo and behold i came across hundreds of pages which described the exact same problem i had. on one forum alone, there were over 700 posts where owners of the 2003 model cavalier had fuel pumps go out at around the same mileage as my car, with repair costs ranging from $300-$900. i continued to research the issue, and found that the nhtsa had researched a large number of consumer complaints regarding fuel pump failures with the 2003 model cavalier ¿ investigation #ea07015 and #pe07033. gm documents in both of these cases indicated a large number of malfunctions in models up to 2003, then a sharp decrease in failures in the 2004 model. *tr

My fiance purchased a used 2003 chevy cavalier about two years ago and we had the fuel pump go out about two months ago. i installed a used one from a junk yard and it went out again last week. i realize that i can't necessarily expect a used fuel pump to last for a significant amount of time, but i noticed that there have been many others complaints in regards to fuel pumps on this year model. i have owned a few cars much older than this one and with higher mileage and have never had to mess with a fuel pump. it currently has 120k miles. *tr

I was driving and had been in my car for about five min and smoke started coming out of the bottom of where the radio and heater controls are..at that time i pulled over and saw flames in the dash and it was growing and i called 911 fire and we closed the doors and waited til the fire truck got there and handled the fire. it completely destroyed my dash steering column front windshield and head liner...all my instrument panels and wiring are fried. i believe it was a faulty wiring system...if not would like to know how this could have been prevented and how do i fix my car.. *tr

I am the original owner of a 2003 chevrolet cavalier. it has 120000 miles on it. a couple of years ago i noticed my gas gage seemed to be stuck, the car had approx 90000 miles on it at the time. a couple of months later my rpm gauge started doing the same thing. about a year after that my speedometer started to also go haywire followed by my oil gauge. my whole instrument cluster no longer works. it has not been fixed because i can't afford it and it has not been recalled. but after looking at how many cavalier have had this same problem i believe it should be recalled. *tr

Mva occurred while swerving to miss a deer. driver unable to negotiate the right hand turn resulting in a head on collision in an embankment. car skidded across the road over a ditch appx 3 feet wide and apxx 1-2 feet deep, then hit the embankment head on at an unknown speed. driver stated she was going appx 40-50 mph prior to swerving for the deer, she thinks she might have slowed down to appx 30-40 mph prior to hitting the embankment. after the initial impact with the embankment the car rolled appx 1.5 - 2 times landing on the driver side door. the air bags did not deploy, unrestrained driver hit the windshield causing bruising, concussion, abrasions, laceration to the scalp. no passengers noted to be in the vehicle other then driver. car is totaled. driver is currently off of work due to closed head injury as advised per er physician. *tr

My wife was picking our children up from school. when she pulled out into the flow of traffic her car died in the middle of the road. this of the second time the fuel pump has gone out the first time was about 60k miles the car now has 95k and i already have to replace it. i've read about many other people having the same problem and everyone is wondering why no recall. *tr

The car just would not start one morning after no warnings! i had it towed to the shop and was told the fuel pump, fuel filter and some type of module would have to be replaced, at a cost of $900.00!!! *tr

Driving down the highway at 70 mph. the car began to shudder and lose acceleration. i got off at the nearest exit and as i passed through the exit intersection, the engine died. i coasted into a gas station, where the engine would turn over and then die right away. after 15 minutes it no longer turned over....the tow truck man tried it. turns out the fuel pump is shot and apparently this is a common problem for 03 cavaliers. the car only has 78,000 miles on it. *tr

In response to previous investigation nhtsa action number pe07033 i was driving my 2003 chevy cavalier on 95 south bound, when the trac off light came on and the vehicle jerked and stalled a little bit. i attempted to continue driving, however noticed the vehicle stalling even more. i was in an extremely dangerous place in highway traffic, and knew i had to pull off the road immediately. my car shut off as i was pulling to the right shoulder of the highway and i was almost hit by vehicles going 60-70 mph. i was able to coast to the shoulder of the road - in a position where i was not even able to exit my vehicle from the driver side. i had the vehicle towed to my mechanic, who informed me that the fuel pump and fuel filter need to be replaced. this is going to cost me approximately $417. i have researched this problem on the web and find it to be extremely common. to say that this isn't a big problem with this type of vehicle is unfair. *tr

I have a 2003 chevy cavalier and the instrument panel has stopped working. i purchased the car in 2005 and in about 2006 it started acting up. at first the gauges would flicker in and out one at a time sometimes reading incorrect speeds or fuel level and sometime not working at all. they would sometimes seem to be affected by the temperature and other times not. i took it in and the mechanic fidgeted with the fuses and it started working again and he said that was the problem. so each time they acted up i would adjust the fuses & they would start working again until even that didn't work. so i went to buy new fuses and the employee at the part store checked my fuses and said they were working fine. i haven't been able to afford to have it fixed. in about 2008 or 2009 i had some other work done on the car and the mechanic said that he had actually seen other cavaliers with the same problem and that the panel needed replaced. my dad wants to fix my car but we are waiting to afford it and not sure if that will fix the problem. i have looked online and seen many other complaints about the same problem and i am wondering why there isn't a safety recall to fix the problem that is obviously characteristically a problem with the chevy cavalier in more than one year. i don't believe that this is something that the consumer should have to worry about and pay for when it is obviously a manufacture default. it is not only monetarily inconvenient but it is a safety problem. you are unable to know how fast you are actually going, or how much fuel you actually have. there is a reason we have those gauges and it isn't simply to look pretty. i would appreciate if someone would take the time to look into this and realize that this is a serious issue for a lot of people. thank you. *tr

While driving on the highway, i looked at my speedometer and it was not moving above 35 miles per hour. i pulled over and saw that the speedometer did not go to zero; it stayed at 35 miles per hour. i turned my car off and on, and the speedometer decreased to 30 miles per hour. after turning my car off and on six to seven more times, the speedometer finally went back to zero. after that, i began driving again. the speedometer worked fine. the next day, the speedometer got stuck at 50 miles per hour. without pulling over and turning the car off, the speedometer began working again, however, it showed i was driving at 100 miles per hour, when i was driving with highway traffic at about 50-55 miles per hour. this happens just about every day during the summer months. when it is cold, this tends to happen less frequently, maybe once a month. the car has been taken to two or three mechanics and each time i am told that there are no problems. the computer says there are no problems with the car. this problem, when first noticed, could have created a serious hazard if the speedometer was stuck at 55 miles per hour, and the driver exited to a city road at 30 miles per hour. the driver would hit their brakes, thinking they were driving fast, possibly causing a collision. when the speedometer is not working there is no real way to tell the exact speed that you are driving. general motors was called the day of the problem and a report regarding the problem was created. *tr

My driver's side power window will initially go down. when i attempt to power the window up, it goes approximately one to two inches then stops. i have to continue driving or leave my car running until the window is up. it is very unsafe to leave my car in any lot or parking space with the window down. on average every 10 minutes it will go up another inch or two. this happens every time i power the window down. i will not leave my window down. elements will damage the interior, and it leaves me susceptible to vandals. i have two children and i consider this malfunction unsafe for me the driver and my children. i paid $18,000 for the vehicle, i will not allow this to go unfixed, however i feel it is the company's responsibility to recall and repair the issue. *tr

The fuel gauge began to malfunction about a year ago. assuming it was just the float, i decided i would ignore it and use the trip odometer to determine how much gas i had left. unfortunately, because the gas gauge went well past full, into the realm of what would be considered two tanks of full, the temperature gauge needle could not move. eventually, the gas gauge needle went past the temperature gauge (now at what would be considered two and a half tanks) which freed the temperature needle to actually register. now, the temperature gauge is malfunctioning, resting at the half way point even after the car sat all night in our recent frigid temperatures. it now runs in the red even though there is nothing wrong with the engine. now, the speedometer is showing signs of malfunctioning, as it reads 5 mph though i am at a complete stop. research on various internet message boards suggest this is a very common problem in not only 2003 chevrolet cavaliers, but other years and models of chevy vehicles. when i complained to gm that a malfunctioning speedometer was a safety issue, i was greeted with "there's no recall, it's no longer under warranty, can't help, your problem, deal with it." following this logic, what's stopping gm from creating more defective vehicles, if the problem happens after the warranty expires? they've adopted the attitude it's "not their problem." at what point is a defective speedometer not a safety problem worthy of a recall? *tr

2003 chevy cavalier, ~83,000 miles. dec 3 in ne ohio, traveling at highway speeds on ohio route 11 at ~11:50pm. car suddenly started to slow down, trac light and oil light came on. able to pull over to side of road. engine still running but rough. no power when tried to make car move. had to have car towed home $200. took ~3hrs in freezing cold and snowstorm. car would not start the next day. could not hear characteristic whir of fuel pump when key first turned. diagnosis of electrical showed fuel pump was receiving voltage. tapping on bottom of fuel tank while trying to start car resulted in car starting. diagnosis: new fuel pump required. anticipated cost $250 + labor. total anticipated cost: $450 + labor. fortunately no or little traffic. also fortunate tow truck responded quickly otherwise personal injury from cold could have occurred. this should not have happened at this low mileage. fuel pumps should be lifetime engineered. *tr

Fuel pump failure - replacement learned of replacement wiring harness - recommended by general motors due to possibility of fuel tank catching fire due to a defective connector replacement was not a harness but a connector that had to be spliced into existing cable which was around 30 or so inches long dealership says splice connector is only alternative to replacing the entire cable which would run over $500 and would have to cut and splice that together as well as new one would have the defective connector as well ** my complaint on this - this is a factory defect or so the dealership says and is aware of the problem which indicated that the harness needs replacement due to fact that using existing connector installed by the manufacturer could cause a fire in the fuel tank - which i would think this is a safety issue that should have had a recall to it. ** also replacing a connector by splicing is pretty much pointless on such a short cable to begin with and if a diy was to do this the connection may not be solid and tight therefore a heat build up could occur and a fire could result as well. *tr

My speedometer was acting up for a year. while i was driving it would stop. when i would come to a complete stop it was stuck on 65mph. made driving hazardous not knowing exactly how fast i was driving.if i let it sit for awhile and cool of i would start it back up and the speedometer meter would go down about 10 mph so i would beat 55mph instead of 65mph. everytime i would start the car it would go down further. then it would work properly for a few months w/o acting up and then start all over again. this went on for about a year. when i finally had it replaced it completely stopped working the needle registered 110 mph and was not coming back down. i had to wait 2 weeks before the dealership was able to replace the instrument panel b/c the had to order the part they were completely out of stock. they told me they've had to replace the ip in alot of vehicles lately. *tr

This does not involve a crash related complaint, it may be considered a minor defect related issue. i am a repair facility, we have a transmission removed from a 2003 chevy cavalier for repair, the warranty company that i am working with needed to verify miles, so we hooked up the battery with the transmission out of the car, the odometer moved forward 17 miles. every time i hook up the battery and disconnect it, the odometer moves forward 17 miles. i thought maybe it was an isolated issue to this car, so i disconnected the transmission wiring harness to a 2005 chevy cavalier, then connected and reconnected the battery, it also rolled the odometer forward with each connection at a rate of 8 miles. no one at gm has ever heard of this, i will continue to test other products to see what happens. *tr

My 2003 chevrolet cavalier ls has a malfunctioning speedometer, gas gauge, and sometimes temperature gauge and tachometer. the vehicle had not sustained any damage that could have possibly caused the malfunction; this problem is solely the result of poor manufacturing. after searching online and calling chevy i confirmed that the problem is with the gauge cluster, an electronic component behind the dash. this cluster costs $500 to replace, presumably with one that works properly, a concept which is hard to imagine with the chevy cavalier. somewhere in the manufacturing process general motors must have decided to cut a few dollars and get some cheap parts, because the malfunction is widespread and consistent in all the reports i've read. this issue absolutely needs to become a recall so that chevy is forced to pay the $500 replacement fee; and monetary justice aside, malfunctioning gauges could create potentially life-threatening dangers. it is not a recall yet, but is absolutely needs to become one. *tr

I have had a continuing problem with a single part on this vehicle that is prematurely wearing out. i called chevrolet to express my concern about this issue and that i was 99% sure that it had failed again (for the 4th time), and was in need of replacement (for the 4th time). because i had the ¿right upper strut mount & bearing¿ replaced 3 previous times, i felt that chevrolet should be made aware of a defective part and also hoped that chevrolet would pay for this replacement. it is my opinion (and have not been proven otherwise by chevrolet or anybody at chevrolet), that the upper strut mount is an automotive part that should at least last 100,000 miles if not longer. it is also my opinion that this part should not have to be replaced 4 times in less than 60,000 miles. *tr

I have a 2003 chev cavalier. owned it from the time it had 4 miles on the odometer. recently i noticed that the speedometer wasn't reading quite correctly. i first noticed it when the speedometer read that i was going 15 miles an hour over the speed limit and people were tailgating me. i didn't realize why until when i came to a stop my speedometer was stuck at 20mph. over time i have noticed that this problem has only gotten worse. every now and then it will read at 60mph at a dead stand still. but that is not even the half of it, it still got worse. at a stand still it would read 100mph+ and when moving it would go back over and start at 0mph. ridiculous!!! i have received two tickets because of this problem. also, on top of all of that, my temperature gauge will sometimes read 260 degrees. i've checked the water and anything that would be causing my temp to read excessively high and there are no other problems. the whole dashboard cluster is messed up. sometimes my fuel gauges won't even read correctly. the problem has just gotten out of hand. i have been told it can cost as much as $1,000 to fix this problem. *tr

Windshield on passenger side failed. plastic cap that by friction holds elbow/joint of both control arms to wiper pivot point separated and is worn and will not hold. now the driver side cheap plastic cap has failed. the motor works fine. independant repair man says he sees this " all the time" part very poorly engineered no retaining clip, cotter nut,or screw to give structural support. *tr

On friday night i parked my car as i usually do and on monday morning at 7:00 am it started fine. after dropping off my eight year old son at the before care of his school, i drove 2.73 miles and my car went completely dead and the lights turned on after applying slightly more pressure on the gas pedal going not more than 30 mph in a 35 zone in order to go up a slight, hardly noticeable incline and my mileage had just reached 83,934. i was on the left hand side of the road without a side to pull over to and luckily there was no car in the right hand lane because i barely had enough time to move over into the right hand lane and as far to the side as i possibly could. here i was now with my two year old daughter stuck near another school where parents were hurriedly trying to drop off their children and traffic was building up around me quickly. i had to get out of my car and try to push my car as far out of the way as possible (i am only a 119 lbs girl so of course i did not make it far). my husband was still sleeping and he did not hear my frantic calls, so i had to call a girl that lived across town who i worked with to request her to pick-up my two year old daughter, call a tow-truck to request them to come and get my car out the commuters way asap, and i then wrote a note, put it on the windshield of the car with my cell # stating that i walked to safeway which was 1.71 miles back down the street in order to meet my ride as we were not in a safe area and i was afraid of the angry people trying to drive around us as fast as possible and my two year old baby was upset. a few minutes after we walked into the safeway, a police office who had read my note called me, told me that i had done the right thing, and made sure that we didn't need a ride and we were okay. five minutes later my ride picked us up, took us to my car where we waited for the tow truck, and then helped guide the tow truck to my home. tow bill was $78 & will be $554 + to get this repaired. *tr

The catalytic converter has been damaged and needs to be replaced. the repair shop says that the damage was a result of unburned gasoline going into the catalytic converter when the coil failed. the coil assembly failed and two cylinders stopped firing. i only drove the car about one-mile to the repair shop after the failure (which happened suddenly). the coil assembly had to be replaced at a cost of about $400. after it was replaced, the "check engine" light came on and the repair shop says that the on-board computer diagnostics indicates that the catalytic converter has failed. the car cannot have its registration renewed without a functioning catalytic converter, which will cost about $500 to replace. *tr

The front defroster/defogger would not blow air. the ventilation control cable was replaced because there was a "kink" in the cable that caused the air to not be directed to the defroster. the service tech recommended that i not use the recirculate function on my ventilation system as it seems that when the control is in that position, the cable will start to "kink." this is unacceptable as i should be able to use every function on the ventilation system. *tr

I have a 2003 chevy cavalier with 56,200 miles on it and my wife and i were returning home to flint mi. @ 10 pm on i75 in michigan when the car started to slow down and than it picked up to normal speed for a couple of miles and than it stalled and would not restart. the only light that came on was traction control off light. we walked to the nearest exit and called our son to come get us - we were approx. 30 miles from home @ 10:30pm. i could not get the car towed until the next morning due to severe storms in the area. i researched the internet and it was very obvious that it is a common problem to have the fuel pump quit on 2003 cavaliers. i called and had the car towed to my son-in-laws house (36 miles). i had to meet the driver and show him where to take the car. i took the day off work and called to get prices on fuel pump modules. the normal cost is over $400 for the module. after the car was towed my son-in-law used his tester and there was not any codes in the ecm. we than tested the fuel pump and there was not any noise indicating that the pump was not working. i went and bought a pump which listed for $420 and just because i was a gm employee - i was able to get a discount and only paid $240.00. my son-in-law charged me $100 to replace the pump and the car runs fine. by the way the towing bill was $110 but the insurance company would not cover the total bill because i did not take it to the nearest repair facility. it would have cost me in excess of $800 to take it to a repair facility. i tried contacting chevrolet customer service but they deny any problems or issues even though there are 100's & 100's of complaint on the internet. if you need anymore info - please contact me. *jb

Front driver side window failure, started going down a quarter to half way down and stopping then when you try to put it up it only goes up like a inch and you have to wait a little while and keep doing that until the window is completely up. second there is a clucking noise coming from the front at low speeds including when turning or going over a bump. *jb

Seat belt in middle rear position of car was getting caught on some part of the mechanism and a large hole in the seat belt resulted. i had to have the entire mechanism replaced at my own expense since it was six months past end of warranty. *nm

Knob to turn the controller for defroster, heater for feet or vent. the only area it blows out is out the vent panel in the front of car. i am unable to use the defroster for the front of car, or receive heat at my feet. i just cant believe that this item has already failed. the car is only 3 years old. i would think this is a safety issue since you are required to have defroster to use. and need heat in the car. this other knobs on the control panel work fine there is 3 knobs. 1 for the amount of blower that you want, the second one is for the temp setting and the 3rd one is for where you want the blower to come out of. i have had nothing but problems with the car since day one. first it was the tail lights, then the power windows them self and now this. *jb

I have a 2003 cavalier and i am experiencing problems with front brake rotors again. when car was 1 1/2 years old i experienced wheel vibration, took car to dealership where i bought it and they told me that the brake rotors were warped and that they would replace them under warranty. i checked them about 2 weeks later and found that all they did was turn the rotors down they didn't replace them . vibration problem was fixed i thought . got new tires on car and about 6 months later the vibration problem surfaced again. so i took car to a regular brake repair shop and was informed that the rotors were indeed warped. so had the work done for about 350.00 this lasted for awhile till warranty is out now problem is back again. to me it seems like a manufacturing defect/ or it could be the cheap factory wheels. car is a big disappointment. first brake service was 20 thousand plus miles, second time car has 45000 on it, these are mostly highway miles not a lot of stop and go. i have a 94 s-10 with 109000 miles and it,s only had 3 brake jobs in 12 yrs. this car is only three yrs old with low miles and it,s on it,s third time. *jb

I just got this car at a used car lot about two weeks ago and it rained one night and the front windshield became foggy so i tried to put on the defroster and it would not work no matter where i moved the switch it would only blow the air forward so i had to pull over every little while and wipe it off just so i could get home. the next morning i took it to a mechanic and he looked at it and said the cable that controls the flow of air was broken and he tried to get one from the junk yard and said 3 out of 5 cavaliers of around the same year 2003 had the same cable broken the same way and he told me the flap that the cable controls was sticking and causing it to break so i told him to leave the same cable on the car and he put the flap to the defrost position manually in case it rains again it seems very dangerous if you cant see where you are going this is in the summer time that i am having this problem i don't even want to think about what might happen in the winter time. *jb

Driver was traveling at about 50 mph when she heard a loud pop. suddenly the car started shaking back and forth. driver lost control and crashed into a jersey barrier which totaled the car and caused injuries. subsequent inspection revealed that something seemed to let go in the steering rack. the steering wheel can turn 8 to 12 inches from side to side without moving the wheels. *jb

On feb. 15 2005 i was driving a 2003 cavalier when. as i was driving and switching lines my light turned red and i did not realize it. i went through causing a head on collision with another car. my complaint is that the air bags on my car did not deploy after the accident. my speed was somewhere between 14-20 m.p.h. the vehicle i hit was making a turn at about ten m.p.h. or so. the bumper of my car is completely off and is now being repaired. i was not severely injured but i was very appalled at how the air bags did not deploy. i could not imagine what would have happened if i was not wearing my seat belt. i believe that the airbags are faulty and i also plan to file a lawsuit. *nm

Dt: the consumer owns a 2003 chevrolet caviler. was losing control of the steering and the brakes. it started in the winter. the consumer stated the direction that car was headed was the way it stayed. also, she noticed that there was a hum in the steering wheel which lasted a couple of seconds each time. the consumer contacted the dealer, and they said that it did not sound to them as dangerous. a couple of months later the problem finally came to ahead in june. lights came on the dashboard. the belt broke, and the alternator seized. when the car was repaired by the dealer they concluded the alternator and the belt malfunctioned. also heard a grinding noise in the brakes. the dealer never did any repairs to the steering. the consumer said that the key was hot after it had been in the ignition. and the steering wheel was tight when turning to the right. the car went back to the dealer , and she did not have the tightness to the steering. but, the car was still pulling to the right. the brakes were spongy. there was a popping sound in the front wheel. there was a delay in the speed of the car. and almost had a collision. *ak

Dt: 2003 chevrolet cavalier. the trunk latch broke approximately 3 or 4 weeks after purchase. the vehicle was taken to the dealership and it was replaced. then, a couple of months later it happened again, and the fourth latch for was put on the vehicle. currently, the consumer has an appointment a tdealer to have the fifth latch installed. the last time it was installed the consumer requested they put in a latch from a different vehicle and that one lasted 8 months. the manager stated there were no problems with this vehicle but there were other customers in the waiting area that had problems with this same vehicle. the warranty expired, and the consumer will have to pay for the service. *ak

Just wanted to clarify my call resulting in odi number 10133041. according to the mechanic, prior to the belt breaking, my car's alternator had a "hard spot". this means that it would seize and let go. my understanding is that the alternator should not seize unless there is a collision which in turn stops the engine. this car has never been in an accident. *ak this random seizing, i believe, is what caused my "undiplomatic", steering and braking problems - with loss of control ranging from 1/2 second to 2 seconds at a time. on the report associated with the alternator repair, i again reported braking problems (not just the documented noise), and the oddball sensation in the steering wheel. both lines of complaint were attributed to the seizing up of the alternator. to me, this means that my life, and the life of anyone else on the road with me - was and still is still at the mercy of a weird alternator, whose intermittent failures result in loss of power to the steering pump, and the brakes - resulting in complete loss of control of the car until the backup kicks in - which takes from 1/2 second to 2 seconds. i wish to make very clear - i do not blame the dealer for lack of ability to adequately repair what is an inherent design flaw. in addition, in the course of research, i have learned that most all new cars regardless of manufacturer are designed the same way. this is a serious hazard, and needs to be addressed on an industry wide scale. at this stage, steering, acceleration, and braking are all erratic. sound in the front tires is like a clip-clop. i am not a mechanic, but in reading the descriptions placed here, i must also wonder if the crashes and airbag failed deployments in several posts were also due to a seizing alternator prior to the mva.*ak

Rear drums are wearing out faster than front brakes. *jb

The vehicle was undergoing repair for a minor vehicle accident that occurred on 11/11/04. it was determined that the vehicle had a previous accident and the airbags had been previously removed without being replaced. diagnostics on the airbag module showed that the airbags had been deployed and were missing. the airbag dash warning indicator also has been disabled somehow. none of these deficiencies were reported at the time of the vehicle purchase. it is uncertain when the original repair was made and by whom. the accident on 11/11/04 was not severe enough for the airbags to deploy. no injuries resulted from the missing airbags.

All around problems

The service engine soon, abs and track off lights began turning off and on periodically in mid may 2005. the car was taken to the dealer on may 19, 2005 for routine service and for the warning lights just mentioned. the lights began turning on again and the car was taken back to the dealer on june 20, 2005. the leftwheel sensor, and an oxygen sensor were replaced, this, i was told,would fix the problem. on june 24th the car began miss firing on my way to work. the problem was so severe that i had to have the car towed to another dealer. this dealer's techincian informed me that the fuel pump was bad, and probably was on the 20th, when the other dealer serviced it. and more upsetting to me, i was further informed that the wheel sensor dealer #1 had replaced was still not working properly. i now have paid nearly $1200.00 in repair costs, and my car is still miss firing, the three lights i listed above are still on, and now the check engine light is on too. the car is totally unsafe to drive. it has just under 50k miles, i drive carefully and the car has been very well maintained. i truely believe there is a serious and dangerous defect with this vehicle that gm's trained mechanics are unable to diagnose and repair. this, i was told

Had car parked with the engine running. put car in reverse, backed up and then went to drive. drove about 15 feet and engine died. had car towed to shop and the fuel pump had to be replaced.

Dt: caller says rear driver side wheel locks up under 30 mph. when caller hits brake he can feel it grab. when he tries to take off he can feel it hold longer than it should be holding. vehicle has been to 2 different dealers, and they said it was normal. manufacturer said they could not find anything on it in their search ,and offered the caller a free oil change. *ak

Dt: consumer had recall on tstop light and turn signals. consumer took vehicle to fox chevrolet for repairs, and vehicle did not have right turn signal or stop light on the passenger's side. consumer called fox chevrolet, and dealer said that he should bring vehicle in next thursday. consumer wanted to take vehicle back right away because he felt that vehicle was not safe without proper lights. he did not want to drive unsafe vehicle for a week.*ak *nm

Dt: contact heard a loud "pop" noise, she turned around and the back window was completely shattered. the contact searched around the vehicle and the road surrounding the vehicle, there was nothing that would have caused the window to shatter.*ak

The vehicle stopped dead while in motion. this is not the first time this happened, the consumer had to pull over to the shoulder. this happened many times while moving in traffic. *ak the consumer felt that the vehicle may be qualified for the lemon law. the fuel pump had been replaced four times. *sc *jb

On january 28th 2005, i took my 2003 chevy cavalier to my gm dealership for service on a recall issued by you and gm, recall #04083. this recall is one of the most blatent disreguard for human life. you gave chevy options! options, that shouldn’t have been given because with these options human life is still at risk! this recall allows chevy to apply grease before replacing the rear lamp bulb sockets, not just to replace them and insure my saftey as a comsumer. my car was serviced on january 28th 2005 for this recall. grease was applied and with in 3 days my passenger side rear lamp failed and had done so with all signs listed on the recall. but because the dealer had “done” the recall they tried to tell me it was a burnt out light bulb. which in the end proved not to be. the whole socket was then replaced on january 31st 2005. fast foward to april, my warranty has since expired. when my drivers side rear lamp fails, also with all the signs listed on the recall, but because the dealer had “done” the recall they tried to tell me it was a burnt out light bulb. i check the lightbulb, which was fine. i called the dealership and spoke with the service manager and addressed the situation. why were both the sockets not replaced at the time the passenger side failed? the answer i received made me take a step back. i was told, chevy does not allow them both to be replaced unless they are both broken or in this case have failed. chevy will not replace something unless it is broke….even if it is a saftey recall! to clarify the situation i contacted chevrolets customer service line and received the same information. the dealearship ended up fixing the recall at no charge to me, on april 30th 2005. why was chevy given any options? why was my life put on the line for a mere $100.00, if that? this recall needs to be recalled itself and chevy needs to be made to replace each and every rear lightbulb socket on every chevy cavalier it produced in 2003.

Brake failure, 1st happened at 1024 miles, dealer reluctley fixed it, happened again at 19.500, dealer and gm refused to fix.

While driving at approximately 20 mph driver hit a bump in the road and the vehicle began to sputter and suddenly the engine stalled, causing the vehicle to lose power and completely shut off. owner later contacted the manufacturer, and was told that this was his problem ,and there was nothing else they could do. *ak

The wiper blade arm had disconnected from the washer/wiper housing on the passenger side during inclement weather conditions, which obstructed the drivers vision while driving. the dealer was notified. the dealer informed the consumer that the part was not covered under a warranty or a manufacturer recall. *jb *sb *nm

Chevrolet cavalier z 2003, multiple failures. *bf the defroster would not clear the windows, the heater did not work, the air bag light illuminated because there was a split in the center of the steering wheel. when the consumer made a right turn a noise was heard. the left rear turn signal bulb was replaced, the right rear brake light bulb. there was a noise coming from the front of the vehicle, the dealer lubed the front sway bar bushing. the tires were over inflated, so the vehicle would sway when going over bumps, the blower motor, and heater control was replaced. the abs lamp illuminated. the vehicle needed brake pads. there was mold on the drivers front door. the ac compressor was replaced. the window went down extremely slow, the dealer lubed the window track and regulator. the fog light bulb was inoperative, the door latch was inoperative. *jb

When slowing down at any time headlights dim very low, almost not being able to see them. as a result, driver's visibility is impaired. *ak

When i am on a hill and either get out of the car or put on the emergency brake there is an awful creak from the back end of the car. i took to dealership and they said there was nothing that could be done, it was the way the car was made!!??*ak

The brakes of the consumer's 2003 chevrolet cavalier grind loudly while braking. *nm the consumer also experienced extended stopping distance while braking. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who indicated that the brakes were operating as designed.

Starting in october 2004, the dashboard lights in my 2003 chevrolet cavalier began turning off anytime i drove the vehicle with the headlights turned on. i took the car into a chevrolet dealership four times regarding this problem and it has never been resolved. the first time i took the car in, the dealership informed me that they could not replicate the problem and were unable to conduct any repairs. the second time, the dealership still could not replicate the problem, but replaced the multi-function switch. the third time, i took it to a different dealership and they made a "highly educated guess repair." the fourth and last time, the dealership made no repair attempt and basically told me to not bring the vehicle in again unless i am able to bring it in with the dashboard lights turned off. at this point, i am driving the vehicle with a flashlight in the car so that i can see my speed and other gauges when the dashboard lights are off. while they do not turn off every time i drive with the headlights on, they are off quite frequently. at the worst, i fear this will cause an accident. at the least, i assume i will be pulled over at some point for driving with a flashlight on in the car. while i understand that the dealership has not been able to replicate the problem, it is very dangerous. i have a 5-year extended warranty and gm is required to warrant all electrical problems under it. from internet research, i can tell that gm has multiple problems with the electrical systems in the 2003-2004 cavaliers and i feel this is one more manifestation of that manufacturing problem. *nm

There are numerous things, and the delaership has convinced gm, because i wrote gm about the problems with this, that i am making this stuff up to get an suv. first the radio wasn't working, they put the cable back on said it was loose, its still not sounding like a radio should. next was the popping in the front end, dealership turned rotors, under warranty back brakes squealed real loud they said it was dust i had to pay for that. back brakes still squeal, front end still pops like a bad cv joint. trunk wouldn't shut had to keep slamming it. took it back they greased it worked for awhile starting to get hard to shut sometimes. brake lights and back lights and cruise control quit working . took it to dealership at least 5 or 6 times till they finally replaced it how long it will last i don't know. front sun visor popped when it hung up in rear view mirror real floppy can't use it no more dealer said they ordered it in december. still waiting not fixed. real bad odor of gas in car when tank is half full, no explanation as to why. seat belt makes a funny noise when you are wearing it, pins you back against seat real hard. no explanation for that. have to stop and jerk on it to loosen it like a seat belt should work. dealer says i am imagining this stuff because i do not want car, bought it new still paying for it. been trying to get rid of it they have everyone convinced i am a psycho woman wanting an suv and thats why i am complaining that is all false. just plain hate a car i am paying for.*ak

I bought my 2003 cavalier in feb. 2003. within months of purchase i began to have problems with my tail lights. my left tail light burnt out completely (both turn signal and brake light). it was brought into the dealership in which they replaced the socket, bulb and greased the socket. in the following months, my left tail light continued to fail. two of those times i was pulled over by the local police. also during the summer of 2003, my battery died, although no lights were left on; my car stalled while in drive waiting at a stop light; my window motors died and had to be replaced; my locks failed to work properly which also had to be replaced. this past year i've had even more problems. as of recently, both left and right tail lights failed, and both were replaced, and the right one went out yet again. the trunk was leaking, which caused mold to grow in my trunk and damaging personal effects, and also causing the right socket and wires to become corroded. the socket and wires were replaced again, and the leak was fixed, but dealer refused to replaced fabric in trunk. driver's side window motor died yet again, and was replaced. cd player stopped working. dealership ordered and installed new system. currently i have problems with my power steering upon ignition when cold outside, squeaking sounds over front tires while going over bumps and turning, and all air vents, except passenger side are not functioning properly. dealership looked at vents but stated that they were "operating as designed." over the past 2 years, my "new" car has been back to the dealership about 15 times. way to go gm...another winner!

While driving approximately every two months the brake light will illuminate the dash board. the fuel pump blew out. the heating a cooling went bad. the vehicle makes noise when making right turns. consumer has not found out what it is as of yet. the vehicle has been into the dealer at least twenty times. *nm

04 v 524 000/rear light bulb socket assembles: the consumer stated, the recall remedy was performed three times on the left rear tail lights socket and two times on the right tail lights socket and the bulbs continued to fail. the dealer was still unable to locate the problem. *jb

Headlights are going out completely on 2003 chevrolet cavalier. ok, whom, has what legislator, in, whom's back pocket? there was a recall by chevrolet in november, of 2004- i am betting completely voluntary, of course. this recall, was, for taillights and lightbulb grease. right, somebody going to get killed in those vehicles, if the headlight problems are not corrected. here is a hint, read thier tsb regarding the headlights dimming problem. what a load that is. i will tell you why, i think they put that tsb out. it was just simply to cover thier own you know what. i wonder how many fires, or deaths have occured due to the light hearted approach gm has towards the lighting problems on the 2003 models? don't you love huberous. have you gone to your dealer about a safety issue lately. oh, check out the brake rotors there is stress and heat fractures at less than thirty thousand miles. come on! are we waiting for 1000 wheels to catch on fire, or just my pregnant wife loosing control due the shimmy. ah heck, i'll just go buy a an old pinto and have real expensive lawn ornament fully insured of course, for the next three long years. did i mention the stereo face burning ones fingers, but the dealer says, that was ok too. forget the kickbacks and do your jobs. remember the taxpayer and public servent, not corporation and public servent. sleep well, i am glad someone can. i got go change some diapers now. yeh, three kids; none of them ride in that death trap.*ak

I always noticed on my 2003 chevrolet cavalier that the low trac light would periodically come on when i braked. i thought that this was just because it was a nicer vehicle than my previous one (an old ford escort). i recently took my car to the dealership (integrity chevrolet in parma heights, oh) for 2 recalls. when they finished doing the recall work, they informed me that my front brakes were low. i thought that was unusual since the car was only 1 1/2 years old and had only 23,000 miles. a couple of days later i inquired to the dealership about getting the brakes repaired. they informed me that this was just part of the "normal maintenance" work and was not covered under the warranty. i thought this was not usual maintenance since a person should not need new brakes after 23,000 miles. i took my car to a local service center a couple of days later to check my brakes. they informed me that not only did i need new brakes, but i also needed new rotors because mine were rusted. this trip to the local service center cost me $423.14. i am still making payments on this car and it is only 1 1/2 years old! this should not be happening to a 1 1/2 year old car with only 23,000 miles! the service center attendant had informed me that they had noticed this with many of the 2003 chevrolet cavaliers. this lead me to believe that the problem with my brakes and rotors is indicative of a manufacturing defect! *jb

Consumer experienced electrical problems with vehicle. while driving, all the lights cut off including the interior lights. the consumer took the vehicle to be serviced three times within the last two weeks. they explained to her that they could not find the glitch and until they do she would have to drive the vehicle as it is. *jb the theft service shuts down in the vehicle. the airbag light came on. when the defroster or heater is on the consumer smells a burning smell. *tc

1) brake failure, warped rotors and hubs, lro. 2) crash, rear end collision. property damage. 3) gm refused to fix 2003 cavalier on 01-17-04 under warranty and as a result a crash happened on 02-28-04, a rear end collision due to brake failure.cause was defective factory equipment, warped rotors and hubs resulting in violent judder, shutter, and chatter, due to a lateral brake run out problems.this condition shows up thru the steering wheel which shakes violently when applying the brakes, especially on the freeway at 70 mph. it's a total out of control condition.there is indeed 2 tsb's out on the lro problem from gm, tsb 01-05-23-001a, brake lateral runout,tsb 00-05-05-22-002b, brakes rotor service guide on 02-28-04 my daughter audra m griffin crashed into a 2001 ford pickup due to front brake failure. my daughters statement was "daddy the brakes didn't work", this after an extreme nasty gram (fax) was sent to jessica white gm customer service about the dangerous condition regarding my from brake system. gm absolutely refused to fix this unsafe condition under my warranty contract. they did nothing thus endangering me and my family. fast action is required to investigate and get this car fixed pronto. so far gm seems content to do nothing. they now seem to be more interested in avoiding legal liability, then they are about my safety.*ak

When braking consumer heard a squeaking noise coming from the rear brakes. dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. *ak the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician and consumer took the vehicle for a ride and determined that the rear brakes were the problem. the consumer asked if the brakes were covered under the vehicle's warranty and was assured that they were. when the vehicle was returned the next day for repairs someone else told the consumer that the rear brakes were not covered under the warranty. the consumer chose not to have the repairs made. *nm

Driver was involved in a frontal collision. upon impact, both frontal air bags failed to deploy. driver sustained major injuries. the vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection. the cause had not been determined. *ak

While turning on the turn signals the turn they failed to come on. consumer took vehicle to the dealer for inspection, and the mechanic replaced the bulb and socket. the consumer informed the mechanic that this problem occurred more than once and had not been resolved. *ak the right and left rear turn signal failed, there was shaking in the dash when the blower was on due to the a/c accumulator. *sc

First problem with my car was a short in the brake lights. chevrolet repaired that. then the horn would work randomly. chevrolet replaced that. the a/c failed to work on the driver side. chevrolet repaired that. then the keyless entry randomly stopped working, chevrolet told me they cannot find anything wrong the keyless entry still doesn't work properly. then the car started turning off while i was driving. chevrolet again told me they could not repair the problem due to nothing registering on the computer. my car turned off mid turn and i hit a brick wall. chevrolet investigated the accident and told me my car didn't turn off. i got my car back last tuesday and my car turned off again. i made an appointment to bring my car back to chevrolet and its turned off again. i guess chevrolet will never be able to repair my problem. *nm

Six months or so after the purchase of my vehicle i started experiencing rotor problems, i took it to my dealer and they fixed it. it worked well for about a month or so then it start to pulsate and grind again so i took it in and they fixed it again, this is the pattern two months ago was my fith or six time that i have had them fix it. well the problems is getting worse it make a very bad grinding sound when i push on the breaks and it is really pulsating this time around. i would just like for the rotors to be replaced. i'm really tired of the constant trips to the shop.*ak

'03 and now the air compressor has locked up. since i live in texas, it is essential to have proper a/c in the vehicle. the extended warranty wasn't offered to me at the time of purchase, and now the vehicle is just past the 3 year/ 36,000 mile warranty. the dealership is telling me that it will cost me at least $900 to repair, then after the repair is complete, i will be offered the extended warranty. i can't believe that a car that is less than 2 years old, with less than 40,000 miles on it, could already have this type of problem. i feel like this is a manufacturing issue, and as such, the corporation should pay for the repairs. *ak

I bought a ne 2003 chevrolet cavalier on 5/2/03. it has been to the dealer 9 times for repairs. 7 of which were for brake, turn, and/or dash lights not working. originally, fuses were being blown. in 3/04, i was advised that there was a bad socket problem. in 7/04, the excuse became that they have a "special" grease that they have to put on the bulbs and that this was normal. i had to return my car most recently on 8/4/04 because i did not have rear brake lights or turn signals. i filed a complaint with the better business bureau. we went to arbitration on 6/8/04. chevy motor div. acknowledged that there was a safety defect with my car (brake lights) prior to it being returned to the dealer in 3/04 and faxed a copy of the bulletin they wrote in 4/04. however, they argued that they corrected the defect w/ the bulletin (verbal instructions were given on or about 3/12/04 when my car was being repaired to the service tech at the dealer re: the bulletin that wasn't in written format until 4/24/04). my arbitration was denied because my brake lights were working at the time of the arbitration so they determined that the defect had been corrected. since june, i've returned my car to the dealer 2 additional times for brake lights and turn signals not working properly. since i've purchased my car, i've had fuses replaced, fuse links installed to 5 circuit branches, drivers side window motor replaced, hvac cable and seal replaced, converter seal replaced, sockets replaced, and bulbs replaced; and all in less than a year of owning the car. in this last time, the dealer has replaced bulbs, replaced sockets, and packed sockets with special grease. i've had to drive a defective car for over a year now. my fear of having an accident because my lights fail to work properly. *ak

I purchased a 2003 chevrolet cavalier from fred diehl motors of philsipburg, pa (814-342-3223). i am having problems with the rear brake lights and now all rear lighting. fist the car was serviced at valley tires who replaced the bulb lamps. *ak second, fred diehls replaced the left side socket and tightened the right bulb. the third time, i was stopped by local police for no brake lights. fred diehls replaced both the sockets and bulbs because of a short in the system. i called general motors woth a complaint (customer relationship manager alvin johnson 1-866-942-4368 ext. 47590). mr. johnson sent me a letter april 20 stating they would make the repairs up to 75,000 miles. on may 28, 2004, i was involved in an accident. there were no injuries, but the vehicle was damaged. i signaled and applied my brakes to make a left turn. a flat bed truck behind me started to pass me as i proceeded to turn and struck the driver's side. the man told state police there were no lights, but he was fined anyway for passing in a no passing zone. on june 1 and 2 i called gm and mr. johnson returned my call and took the accident report. on june 3, darrin tranuse of gm (1-800-231-1841 ext 58932) called me and told me to take the vehicel to the nearest chevy dealer. my brother-in-law followed me to fred diehls because i had no rear lights. they checked the car and found no lights also. they called gm and were given special orders to allow no one around the vehicle until they could look at it. i have twice called mr. tranuse but never received a return call. the had the vehicel serviced three times and the fourth time resulted in an accident. right now, i'm afraid to drive it.

The left and right turn signals/brake lights in car stopped working. i took the car to the dealership where it was repaired. they told me there was a short in the wiring in the rear of the car. the right turn signal/brake light stopped working again about 1 week after the repairs. *ak

My grand daughter was in a low speed accident. no body damage but the air bags inflated the passenger side broke the windshield. the driver side nearly broke her arm ask the dealer to reload air bags and replace the windshield they refused. *la

1. both brake lights went out w/in month of each other. in the months of july and august. 2. brakes noisy, september 3. trunk would not open, october 4. brakes noisy, again, november 5. car turns off in the middle of an intersection after making a complete stop and trying to speed up. freaking out, i pressed the gas and moved the key in the ignition, then put car in park and got it to start, november. it just seems to me that i have a disfunctional car that when i dont have something wrong with one thing i have to go in to the dealer for another. its a new car and its costing me more problmes and inconviniences than the old '96 i had till i bought this one.

I purchased my car in august of20 03. i immediatly had to have the rotors redone. within two months i once again had to have them fixed, this time at the cheverlot dealer in pensacola. within a few months not only did my roters once again begin to pulsate badly, my brakes began to go out. both were redone. the brakes at my cost. it has now been over a month and once again my rotars and brakes are messing up. this is very inconvient for me as i am in the military and i can not be without a car because i live off of base. *ak

I bought my car from apple valley chevrolet in august 2003. the car had 64 miles on it when i drove it off the dealers lot. after the car exceeded 1000 miles it started having an electrical problem with not keeping rpms and shutting off. when the car shuts off i no longer have power steering after this hrepeatedly happened, i informed the dealership of the problem that i was having and took it to them three times and they told me that if it did not come up on their computer that they could not fix it and that there was no problem. *akthe problem has yet to be resoved , no satisfation.due to this being my primary mode of transportation, my car has around 18,000 miles on it now and i have a roaring sound coming from the drivers side wheel. i notified the dealership of the problem and they told me that it would be fixed on may 11,2004. the dealership did not want me loan me a rental and told me and my mother that if i needed a vehicle that i could pick up my car and drive it in that condition. my parents refused to allow me to drive the car in that unsafe condition, my mother got on telephone with the supervisor of maintenance and they agreed to have me pick up a loaner from thrify loan in martinsburg. my mother took me in to pick up the vehicle. i was notified that they had fixed all problems with my vehicle and that i could pick it up, today may 17, 2004. i picked my car up from the dealership today.

While driving at 45 - 50 mph on the highway the transmission completely failed, without warning and the wheels on the car locked up. the car came to a complete stop without warning and 3 cars swerved off the road to avoid a rear end collision. once out of the car it could not even be pushed off the road. the mechanic noted that all the egears were broken and the transmission could not even be rebuilt. a transmission had to be pulled from totalled cavalier and rebuilt to get my car running. without the rebuilt transmission, parts could have cost up to $2500 plus labor. i was disappointed/scared that such a thing could happen without warning. had i been driving on the interstate i could have been killed or seriously injured if another car had hit us. i was disappointed because i take very good care of my car and have never had any serious problems with it.

I have been having a problem with my 2003 chevrolet cavalier. the rear brake/signal lights keep burning out due to bad sockets and bulbs. combined, i have had to replace five (5) light bulbs (three (3) on the right and two (2) on the left). the first time was april or may 2003 on the right side, when i was still in pittsburgh. the second time was in september or october 2003, also on the right side, but this time was in port orange, fl, where i found out about the socket problem. the third time was two weeks following the second incident, this time on the left side, but the dealership had the sockets on back order. the fourth time was in january 2004, again on the left side, this time the dealership replaced the socket. the fifth time was april 30, 2004, again on the right side, after the socket was replaced.*ak

When the brakes are applied vehicle shakes. consumer states that the rotors are the cause of the problem. *ak

Will be driving down the road and go to press the brake to turn or stop and the car stalls in the middle of the road. happens very randomly every so often. have taken it to the dealership 4 times for this problem and can't find anything wrong or duplicate the problem. this has happened to me with others in the car, including a one year old, and have almost gotten in severe accidents. once with an eighteen wheeler!! this is a very dangerous and scary problem!!

While driving at night with headlights on the head light cut off without prior warning, leaving consumer between four to six seconds without a vision of the road. dealer was contacted. *ak

I've owned my 2003 cavalier for 1 yr. 3 months. i'm very irritated with having to go to the dealership every other month for the same problem. i've had my car in 7 times to get the taillight fixed. the first 2 times the light blew out, my radio completely wiped out my preset stations. i also had my car in 2 months after i bought it because there was a bad snow and as i was driving 5 mph i bumped over a pot hole which ended up cracking my spring and strut on the front pass. side. i had to pay out of pocket because the repair was $100 less than my deductible. and i was in the service dept. a week before complaining of a squeak coming from my front tire that they put off as the wheel cover.coincidence?there was no reason that the spring and strut should have cracked like that! i've also, just for the record, asked them twice to check my brakes because as i come to a stop they begin to pulsate. the service dept. told me i needed new brakes.i've only had my car for 1 year, 24,000 mostly highway miles!!! they want $250.00 to fix my brakes and they should still be under warranty. even midas gurantees their brakes w/ a lifetime warranty. you'd think the manufacturer would for an original owner.it's only 2 pads for goodness sake! if i knew how, i'd do it myself. a service tech told me that gm is well aware of these safety hazards that other gm customers like myself are experiencing, yet they aren't doing a recall. something needs to be done before something bad happens to someone while in their vehicle. not doing anything is bad business!! customers should be first priority. as a manufacturer, your responsibility is toward your customer if something you sell or manufacture is defective!!!*ak

With only .5 inches of snow my car (a 2003 chevy cavalier) lost complete control and smashed into the curb. this was while traveling at less than 10mph. i feel the combination of 16" tires and the sports suspension (both standard on the car) was the cause of the accident. *ak

The tires shake and vibrate around sixty miles/hr. so i took them to sam's club to their tire center in december of 2003. they rotated and balanced the tires. i drove the car for one month, then the tires started doing the same thing over again. about one month later, i went back to sam's club and they balanced my tires again. so here it is march of 2004, the tires are doing the same thing again shaking and vibrating around sixty miles/hr. i called goodyear , they told me to bring the car in. they looked at the tires, and said that the rear tires were worn on the inside, and that i would have to take the car back to the dealership to get the tires fixed. they could not diagnose the specific origin of the vibration. basically, for a brand new car, we should not have these kind of problems at 24,000 miles (as stated by mechanics from goodyear, sam's club and firestone). 5. cruise control switch- if right turn signal is used when cruise control is activated, the cruise control will automatically deactivate itself. 6. power failure- car all of a sudden lost power while at a stoplight. 7. a/c & heater- a/c and heater make loud noise. 8. rear turn signal light bulbs burned out 4 times on each side. gm replacement bulbs last only 1 to 1 1/2 month. *nm

When applying the brakes at night, the headlights and dash lights dim to a softer shade of light. i have also changed the rear single lights in my car three times in the past 6 months. this car has a bad brake problem. the front of the car shakes very bad when you apply the brakes while exiting a highway. city driving is not as bad, but when the brakes get warmed up they pulsate when i come to a stop. at the end of the day, i pull my car into my driveway and the first thing i smell when i get out is a burning smell from the back brakes. i called the fucillo chevy service department in december 2003. i talked to a serviceman about my brake problem. he told me that my pulsating brakes is the abs system working in the snow. now the roads are dry and my brakes are still pulsating. i could not find anything in my original paperwork on my car showing that it has the abs system. now my brakes are shot. the car had only 6500 hundred miles on it when i first called in december of 2003. in june of 2003, i bought this car and test drove it. the car seemed to be a good car, except for the noise that i heard coming from the front left tire area. it sounded like a rubber band when it snaps. i brought it up to my salesmen rocky from the chevy department. he told me that it's a new car. now when the front tires are turned to the right, it makes a crunching noise. when i drive over any bump at any speed, it feels like there are no shocks or struts on this car and makes a bad clunking sound. *nm

My car has been dying at red lights and while i am driving it! it takes several tries before the car will restart. it is only 9 months old. my car dealership told me i can bring it in but the will probably not be able to detect the problem. therefore, they will probably not be able to repair anything. *ak

I am a gm technician. gm is having a huge problem with "j" body cars with new body style. (caviler, sunfire year 2001-current) the problem is with poor terminal contact with the rear bulbs due to defective bulb sockets. the result is loss of rear turn signals and brake lamps on one or often both sides. this problem affects cars often with less then 1000 miles. it is a huge problem and our shop must fix 8 cars a week on average for this problem and we are not a large gm shop. not having rear turn signals or brake lamps is serious for risk of rear-end collisions.*ak

4/1/2004-check engine light came on. fucillo stated that it was the emission control and that the part was on national backorder. terry stated he did not know when part will be in. rear axel rattles and tires are worn on the inside. fucillo stated that there is another cavalier in with the same problem and they have no idea what it is. they changed defective muffler and replaced brackets. 4/5/2004-took car to bresee chevrolet. they will not work on it because fucillo did so much work on it. bresee had no idea of national back order on part. they said they would ship the part up to fucillo. svc mgr stated that the rear axle is not aligned. they said that we have a lemon and that if they had sold this car to us, they would have replaced it by now. called fucillo back & talked to terry riordan and got nowhere. *jb
