2002 TOYOTA Tundra

The shifting lever broke off in side from the shaft. The pot metal just broke in two. The dealer indicated Toyota would do nothing, this is not a recall, and although a BIG safety issues, that Toyota would not really care.

Vehicle left icy highway going about 60 mph and struck a 12 ft high wooden fence and sheared off a railroad tie fence post. Impact speed was approximately 55 mph. Vehicle struck fence/railroad tie post at a near 90 degree angle. Seat belts were in use by both passenger and driver. Neither air bag deployed during accident. Local dealer basically blew me off and told me to call the 1-800 number in my warranty book. Toyota regional has called and wants to tow truck to local dealer to check on air bag system. I am concerned that someone else may have a similar problem in the future and either be seriously injured or killed. I also am concerned that Toyota may say that the air bag system is fine, my truck will be repaired (if it\’s not totalled), and I still have an air bag system that may not work in the future. I did note that NHTSA had a report (ODI#767700) of another head-on collision at 45 mph and the air bags did not deploy. Please advise. Thank you. By the way, the right half of the front bumper is pushed back nearly to the front wheel.

2002 toyota tundra. consumer requests reimbursement *tgw the consumer stated toyota did send him a check for $ 61.63. but, they didn't reimburse for his time for installing the fuel support strap that had completely rusted. when he contacted toyota, he was informed it was their policy to only pay for installation when a business performed the installation not individuals. the consumer stated the dealer was busy and couldn't install the strap, so he and a friend performed the installation. *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 toyota tundra. the contact stated that the air bag warning light consistently illuminated on the instrument control panel. as a consequence in a situation that warrants the frontal air bags could fail to deploy, which increased the risk if a serious injury. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and a technician concluded that the airbag sensor in the floor board needed to be replaced. the vehicle has not been repaired. the current and failure mileages were 186000.

Loud knock turning the wheel to the left, rack and pinion leakage, inner outer tie rods can snap cause an injury or death. headlights are very dim even the bright lights are dim. an oncoming car is not even phased when i have my bright lights on. it's difficult to see very well with those damn lights they're almost in amber color tried to use lens renew did not work

Fortunately i was off the interstate when making a right hand turn into a convenience store...........the steering suddenly became almost impossible to turn, actually causing me to turn into the outgoing lane at the store entrance. there was no advanced warning....just no steering on turns and no brake fluid in the resevoir. the toyota deal says the steering rack needs replacement.($1600)......and could not explain exactly where the fluid went. this was suppose to be a 300,000 mile vehicle, now stands at 116,457. had to replace a stabilizer as well due to corrosion. i just sold my 1997 grand am with 224,000. and my 1988 dodge caravan had 244,000 before the transmition went. toyota and reliability???????? *js

There is excessive rust across the entire rear end of the truck. the rear axle casing has started to deteriorate to the point that differential fluid is leaking from the casing. i have already had to have the frame, spare tire and fuel tank replaced due to excessive rust.

Vehicle frame has rusted through in places and has deteriorated by flaking in other locations on the frame. also power steering rack has rusted through. the truck has less than 61000 miles on the odometer. i filed a complaint with toyota in late october, 2016. after speaking with a toyota representative, they said that they would not do anything to remedy the problem as their recall on the frame was good only until 12-31-2012.

Part of the frame on my truck has one large rust hole and a smaller rust hole. i spoke with toyota about it for the first time on saturday october 22, 2016 and i was told that the frame is still covered until december 2016. i received a follow up call like i was told on monday october 24, 2016 only for my case manager to inform me it was not covered. she said the first lady i spoke with was wrong about what she told me. now i'm stuck with a truck that has major rust issues.

Rear axle seals have failed four times in the past five years. when they fail, the rear brakes become coated with oil, significantly increasing stopping distance.

Vehicle made whining noise after going from park to drive. moved a few feet and steering became very difficult. leaking trail of fluid underneath. private mechanic confirmed today that the power steering rack is completely rusted through and was the source of the leak. vehicle has approximately 137k miles. had i been on the highway, this would have been disastrous. i had just been on the highway.

Takata recall my tundra is a 2002 so not currently included in the recall. the airbag warning light came on over a year ago and the mechanic says it is non-functioning, i hear this is a common 2002 problem. they should also be included in the recall.

I was driving down interstate 5 on my way to work at 70mph and as i was on the causeway the lower ball joint came off causing my front tire to come off and it resulted in a crash that totalled my truck and damage to me as well .

I was driving down the road on a road ~35 mph when my rear axle assembly locked up causing the truck to abruptly come to a stop.

Frame has corrosion & perforation. dealer said it will not pass state inspection. this is even after the phase one & two resolutions performed on this truck in 2010. in 2011 the rear gas tank strap broke. in 2012 the spare tire fell off while entering the interstate. this corrosion is an ongoing issue ever since i bought it new in 2002. toyota's campaign it resolve this issue is nothing more than a bandaid to bide their time further down the road. i contacted toyota, 4/2017 and they said the campaign to "fix" this is over. so, i guess i am stuck with it.

My 02 toyota tundra was included in a recall for its frame and crossmembers rusting out and causing an unsafe vehicle. i brought my truck in a couple years ago for the recall. the truck had very low miles for the year under 60k and was taken good care of. the dealer deemed the frame was not rusted through enough to warrant a complete new frame. instead they sprayed my frame with some rust proof paint. well that band aide has almost all fallen off and the frame is worse than ever with cross members rusted all the way through. i contacted toyota hqts and after being bounced around for over an hour was told by a supervisor that i am out of luck because they placed a year warranty on the paint job. any problems over a year past the warranty work is the consumers problem. well the paint held for a bit but ultimately did not resolve the underlying rust problem. i was told to follow up with the dealer that had done the warranty work. they inspected the frame and took pictures to send to toyota, but ultimately said the vehicle was unsafe at this time. i have not gotten any resolution with the issue. my main issue is that they think spraying an undercoat on a rusted frame is going to resolve the rust issue when in fact it was a band aide that has hidden what was manifesting underneath and ultimately destroying a very great vehicle. toyota has not held up their end in standing behind what it sells and behind resolving major safety problems for its constomers.

Vehicle was recalled for frame rust. it was recorded in 2012 that the frame was coated with crc to prevent /stop the rust. had it inspected by the dealer and found the frame had rusted around the rear leaf spring and was recommended that i should not drive the vehicle in with this problem. toyota cannot verify how long this crc coating would last. is this a just a fix to show that toyota has fulfilled its obligation as required by nhtsa?

My tundra was recently diagnosed with critical frame damage that will not pass pa. state inspection. the vehicle was serviced by toyota for most of it,s life and all frame recalls were completed. the truck has 136,078 miles and is in very good condition. my recent claim with toyota was rejected based on the their interruptation that all required recalls were done and there is nothing toyota can due for me. there are numerous problems with toyotas response. the first beginning that when i picked the truck up after the frame recall treatment i asked the tech how the frame looked, he said good but there is a separation starting at the driver side rear leaf spring. that is exactly where my problem lies today. i believe toyota covered up the problem by treating the frames rather then replacing them in an attempt to save money. how many vehicles covered under this warranty were treated in the same manner and are still currently driving on the roads today? how many of the recalled vehicles now pose a problem to all motorist. please look into this

Frequently from a park position and then shifting and turning seems to lack responsiveness.

Notified of safety recall on vehicle for rust on frame that will cause structural failure that can lead to loss of control of the vehicle. took vehicle to toyota dealer to be repaired. was told the repair was made. informed by inspection service center the repair was not effective 8/10/2012, notified toyota customer care 8/11/2016 of the problem they opened case #1608102651. i contacted them again 8/12/2016 and was informed by the case manager toyota would not inspect or repair the vehicle. she indicated the recall was listed as limited service and not a safety recall. she indicated this was an on-going issue and several recalls had lapsed for this same problem. because the recall had expired toyota was no longer responsible for the defect. they only rust on the vehicle is on the defective frame. a recall repair that does not fix the problem is useless.

Truck inspected by toyota for corrosion and treated with chemical as part of the recall notice.at this time i had no concerns with condition of the frame for safety concerns.my truck was treated 10/24/16 by toyota and during a routine exhaust fix mechanic showed me areas of concern on rear of the frame.the dealership that performed the treatment looked at the frame again and stated they diidnt want to touch or check the areas of concern a incase they made holes in the frame.i opened a case with toyota and indeed got a second opinion from another toyota dealership whom deemed my vehicle unsafe to drive due to frame corrosion in the areas that were treated , now this was only 3 months after toyota treated the frame. i was given a case manager at toyota for special circumstances as he quoted, and 2 days later was told nothing could be done. i also have a gas leak which has materialized around the rotted crossmember . overall in 3 months i now have perorations and delamination of the rear frame and a junk truck.

Rear frame crossmember rusted through and holes in front frame. in 2011 there was a safety recall on this. feb,15, 2011 i brought the truck to the toyota dealer where i bought it. they inspected the frame and sprayed undercoating on it. it was not a sufficient fix. toyota refuses to fix this problem.

The front frame on the passenger side has a large rust hole completely through it, by the sway arm bracket, and that bracket itself is loose and hanging. the vehicle has 139,000 miles on it.

I did not get any extended warranted notice from toyota to fix the frame. i was living in mississippi in 2002 and moved to tennessee in 2004 where the salt and rusted the frame. i only got one recall on the rust problems, but i did not get the extended warranties!!! i live and bought the 2002 tundra in johnson city, tn.... the tennessee road commission uses salt on the roads and highways in the winter months. i did not get any extended warranted notice from toyota to fix the frame. 2002 toyota tundra structure: frame and members:underbody shields nhtsa campaign #09v444000 date announced: november 18, 2009 problem: summary: toyota is recalling model year 2000-2003 tundra vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in the following states: connecticut, delaware, illinois, indiana, kentucky, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, virginia, west virginia, wisconsin and the district of columbia. excessive corrosion of the rear cross member may cause the separation of the spare tire stowed under the truck bed which would present a road hazard that could cause a crash. also, corrosion of the rear cross member could affect the rear brake lines and the proportioning valve resulting in diminished braking capability. extended warranty.... i did not get.... according to a letter sent out to toyota dealers, toyota has extended the warranty on 2000-2003 tundra frames, which allows dealers to replace rusted frames on 2000-20003 toyota tundras at no charge to the consumer. this is excellent news for any toyota tundra owners dealing with frame rust issues as well as a strong symbol of toyota’s commitment to quality and customer service. while this move didn't happen as quickly as we would have liked, we strongly applaud this action. *tr

Had to replace all 4 oxygen sensors. the front two were faulty before 50000 miles and less than 7 years old. the rear differential cover is rotting and leaking fluid. the only way to repair it is to weld over the hole.

The headrest on the front seats are too short. i am 6'6" tall. at tallest extension, the head rest presses against the top of my spine, below my head. i fear a broken neck and head injuries in a head on collision. i presented this question to toyota engineers several years ago and they were indifferent.

The frame on my 2002 toyota tundra is rusting and has holes completely thru the frame. the truck has always been registered and licensed since new and my problem is never receiving a recall notice. when i learned from a friend that tundra frame had been replaced, i called toyota for my frame replacement. toyota said the recall expired and refused to make the repair. other that the frame, the truck is in excellent condition because it has been well maintained. it is sad to have an excellent truck setting on a frame that is rusting away. how can toyota sell a defective truck and identify it as unsafe, fail to contact the owner and then refuse to repair the truck saying the owner missed the deadline. toyota could have contacted me but i never received any notification. i asked if toyota could offer any credit on a replacement, even some consideration on a new tundra and toyota refused to make any effort to assist me. i currently own four toyotas. buyers beware! *tr

Frist time comeing down my road going 30 miles per hr l right upper and lower ball joint broke tire went under the truck. second time the left upper and lower ball joint broke turning a corner. third time it happen i just got off of the hwy and the lower ball joint broke. i am afied to drive it .

Column shifter broke away from shift column with very little force when shifting in reverse. attempting to back out of parking spot. had to jump on brake to avoid losing control of vehicle.

Loud popping sound when turning the steering wheel, head lights are very dim extremely hard to see and melting plastic around them

I had my lower ball joint separate from the knuckle. luckily i was in a parking lot. i see that there was a recall on the lower ball joint for 02 tundra. so i do i go about getting a refund for what i had to spend. *tr

Rear differential is leaking oil due to faulty metal used in manufacturing. diff. is leaking thru rust holes in housing metal and not thru seals.

Difficult to start and engine dies when driving

The rear axel and differential housing/casting is corroded thru such that oil is leaking through the differential hub onto the roadway and resulting in a loss of gear oil within the differential and axels. after driving on the highway this oil was observed on the spare tire (mounted under the bed) and up the back of the bumper. the service representative at one dealership i approached to discuss the cost of repair indicated that they have seen the problem multiple times. this obviously should not be happening and i believe it to be the result of a defectively designed/manufactured component. i have not yet had the vehicle repaired due to the high cost, but it is not driveable as the differential will not hold gear oil.

Air bag light is on and took it to mechanic who said there is a problem with the passenger bag and it is deactivated. this seems to be a problem that many others are also having from the complaints i have read.

Frame is severely rusted and called about a previous recall to replace the frame but they told me that i had just missed it and the recall had ended? i told them that i had the truck at the time of the recall but was never notified of the recall. i had received other promotions about new vehicle discounts for toyota owners, but never about any recall on the truck at all? now the frame is rusted even worse but i have to continue to drive the truck because i cannot afford another vehicle at this time! the other day i pulled into my driveway and noticed the vehicle making a noise and when i looked under the vehicle, the fuel tank strap had rusted and fell apart and the fuel tank was hanging down. i had to take a ratchet strap and strap the fuel tank back up to the frame because i have to have the truck to drive to work. i look now and there is a recall about the corrosion on the fuel tank straps and on the spare tire carrier and such and yet again i was not notified about the recall. had the fuel tank not fell out on me and then me look on your site to find out about it, i would again not have known there even was a recall until it was too late to do anything about it ! i need to know what can be done about getting toyota to honor the frame replacement recall on my truck that i was never notified about even though i know that they knew i owned it because of the other mail they had sent me about new vehicle offers for current toyota owners? any and all help appreciated as i cannot afford to buy another truck having so much money in this one that is eventually going to break in half as i drive it down the road which is not safe for me or anyone else on the road around me. i live in kentucky where is one of the primary areas for salt. thank you, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Replaced ball joints 4 times in 10 years

Seatbelt buckle piece popped out and i have to push the red button to secure seatbelt.

2002 toyota tundra sr5 frame was sprayed with undercoating per recall when it should have been replaced. now frame has holes 1" wide 4" long behind front tires on both sides. body still looks new. i see trucks for sale that are rusted out beyond repair but have new frames.

Frame is rusted and won’t pass inspection. have already replaced fender and box

"toyota recalls" chasis/frame - i had every recall or service bulletin completed by toyota sales/service in our area. toyota's fix for the frame rust did not work. i was informed this week that there are now holes in the frame. the tailgate is rusting along with the bed of the truck as i was able to see the underneath of the bed when the toyota dealership put it up on the hosit yesterday. this truck has been maintained properly, has approximately 135,000 miles on it, and the body is still in good condition. although i was notified this week about the frame, it's has been on going for some time and i do not understand why no one in the last 2 years informed us of the frame rust damage. even the toyota service department that had serviced the vehicle earlier this year did not inform me of the extent of frame rust damage.

The frame is 80% rotted through with rust. i'm sure it will be deemed unsafe to drive and unfortunately waiting any day for it to completely fall through. the bed is literally nosediving into the front body of the truck.

Air bags didn't deploy in a serious head on collision

The frame is so rusted there are areas i can put my fist through, the rear shock rusted off the frame while i was driving the truck

During an oil change the mechanic noticed the frame just in front of the leaf spring bracket was severely rusted through making it dangerous to drive. we did have toyota supposedly address a potential rust situation in 2012. however, this damage should not have occurred if this was supposedly addressed. we have contacted toyota and they have told us that there is no assistance that they can provide at this time. we are concerned that there are potentially many other vehicles with the same issue and are totally unaware of their dangerous situation.

I purchased this truck used in 2015 and was unaware of any recalls due to frame rust. i have replaced tailpipe, muffler, many brake components due to rust problems. the frame now rusted more and i am being told that it may be unsafe to drive. a mechanic told me about this frame rust recall and i took it to fred anderson toyota in raleigh,nc. the found that all recall items had been completed by the dealer in boone,nc. i find this hard to believe since the rusting issue is much more severe. i just want a fair evaluation of what can or should be done. fred anderson toyota in raleigh did have the truck but not sure how far they took the investigation of rust.

When pulling the vehicle into park on a roadside, the gear shift lever snapped and stopped working, making it unable to shift gears including putting the vehicle into park. upon removing the cover over the steering wheel, it was obvious that the gear shift lever had indeed broken completely loose from the steering column.

Vehicle had a recall for frame rusting out. the vehicle was bought to koon toyota dealership in 2014 for the recall. they did a spray on the frame that was supposed to cure the rusting out on the frame. however the frame is still rusting out. i bought the vehicle to connacelli toyota in springfield pa, and they do an inspection to find the frame not safe to drive on. connacelli tells me there's nothing they can do because the time has expired on the recall. this i could understand if the vehicle never was serviced in the allotted time, but however it was serviced by koon toyota and the remedy evidently did not solve the issue.

The rust corrosion is so bad that the spare tire fell off hitting the leaf spring support bracket and completely caused the bumper to fall off the truck. the spare tire rolled into oncoming traffic and almost caused an accident. the corrosion is evident all over the chassis and other parts. this happened while i was driving and pulling a landscape trailer on route 173 in new jersey. *tr

Takata recall although currently toyota claims my truck is not included in the recall i have the same air bag warning light that those who are part of the recall have. i searched my make model and year on line and founds hundreds of others who are having airbag issues but we're excluded from the recall.

Recently had to replace and pay for replacing srs sensor assembly dtc b0133 short in in p?r squib and b1100 air bag sensor. old unit serial # 12625229if. i was told that my truck was not on the recall list so toyota would not pay to replace it. since it is the same issue for the recall, why is my vehicle excluded if it is the same safety concern? i cud have been a victim of this defect. the new unit serial # is 01860095if

Toyota has a recall on the truck frame that they won't do anything about. this truck has only 70000 miles on it. we took it to the dealership and they told us to call toyota. we contacted toyota and opened a claim and they told us there not doing anything at this time for that recall. the whole frame is rotten and is not safe to drive. we've done all the recalls they had for the frame and it still rotted out. not sure how i can get this resolved with toyota. the frame snapped on the front driver side. the frame snapped while driving around town.

While driving, i had my spare tire fail off the car due to tundra spare tire lift plate rot. i was unaware of this condition and could have resulted in a serious accident.

The remedy applied to my 2002 toyota tundra for safety recall 09v444000 has proven to be ineffective. i purchased the truck used from the toyota dealership where the safety recall remedy had been performed. the frame cross-member which supports the fuel tank - a component called out in toyota documents related to 09v444000 - has separated from the frame on both sides. (see attached photos) this condition was discovered during my recent state inspection. i was told that it is dangerous to operate the vehicle in this condition until the cross-member which supports the fuel tank can be repaired or replaced. since recall 09v444000 was originally initiated to fix this very problem, i believe my vehicle should still qualify for this repair because the fix applied was a band-aid repair that did not address the original fault. your database currently shows there are no longer any open recalls on my vin, but the original flaw has progressed to the point where the vehicle (which is otherwise in excellent condition) is unsafe to operate on public roadway. is toyota obligated to address this issue, or was their temporary fix (the application of rust-proofing) enough to absolve them of any responsibility from that date onward?

2002 toyota tundra 4wd limited access cab. in dec 2012 brought truck to burnsville toyota for recall. they only sprayed rusted inhibitor paint on frame. brake warning light came on. brought truck into local independent shop. they said brake line to rear drum brakes shook lose, due to frame rusting/corrosion away from shock absorber mount. they also stated truck is unsafe to drive because frame and crossmember supports are corroded and rusted beyond repair. called burnsville toyota and they said, that the recall 3 year warranty had expired and they will do nothing to help. the engine, transmission, and body are still in good shape. disappointed that toyota would not offer to help with there designed error in frame.

While driving on state road 27, i starting smelling fuel in the cabin; when i get to my destination, about 7 miles after, i came out with the truck still running, notice a lot of fuel under the truck, i turned off the truck immediately and the flow of fuel gradually stopped.

Structure. 220,000 miles i tool it in for an oil change the tech calls me over to show me the rotted frame member's. i took it to tarbox toyota in ri, they took pics and sent it to toyota. they also told me i should not drive the vehicle. toyota said no outstanding recall on it so i am out of luck. i was never notified of any recall except for the one listed to replace a rear chassis member which i had done. the killer is i have put $5000 into it over the last few years thinking i would have the truck for another 10 years...its only used occasionally. now what do i do?

The spare tire carrier/hoist rusted causing the spare tire to fall off the truck while driving down the road.

In 2012, my frame was recalled for rust. toyota applied a corrosion resistant spray compound. it did not work. now i have rust holes coming from the inside out.

Fuel tank rusted

The differential housing is rusted so bad that oil is seeping through rust pits. the frame is also rusted and had to have it welded. also lost the spare tire due to rust.

Purchased the vehicle in february 2017 and was informed by the mechanic that the rear end differential was beginning to leak due to excessive rust. further inspection of undercarriage do to a noise under vehicle found that the frame and body mount had deteriorated due to rust causing a hole in the body mount causing the cab to flex and bounce on the frame. vehicle treated by toyota for earlier recall due to rust of the frame and given a 5yr extended warranty. body of vehicle is free of rust, frame and differential have excessive rust making the vehicle unsafe to operate.

Takata recall toyota does not recognize that our 2002 toyota tundra has a factory faulty airbag/ seatbelt system, and say that there is no recall for our vehicle, and that we have to pay to fix it. the seat belt is always loose, there is a permanent lit light related to the airbag.

I recently found out about a problem with the frames of certain toyota tundras from a coworker. i found that my truck fell into the category, however i was never notified of any recalls or safety actions. i brought my truck into the dealership and was told that the spare tire carrier will be replaced as well as the fuel tank straps and a coating can be applied to the rear part of the frame. i asked how the rest of the frame was and was told there was major rot in the front section. i called toyota and was told there was nothing they would do about it as the recall or safety action expired on 31 march 2016. i expressed to them that i was never notified of anything about the frames and was basically told there was nothing they would do. i am now stuck with a truck with a rotted out frame that toyota is not willing to stand by, even though i only missed the deadline by a month and a half, due to them.

My first issue was 3 years ago when my muffler was so rusted away i felt something dragging pulled over and seen my muffler had fall almost off hanging there. the next year i pulled into my work and all my studs on my tire broke and my tire and rim went one way and me and the truck went other way. now my brakes keep sticking then they finally just stopped working all together after replacing pads. i have went thur 3 sets of tires in 4 years. i have it in the shop and they are saying my brake lines are completely corroded and falling apart.

We have a serious rust issue with our 2002 toyota tundra. toyota replaced a frame but reattached all the already rusted pieces back onto the new frame. the break line has rusted through on several occasions. we have gone through a red light & stop sign. no was hurt, we were lucky but this truck is a death trap. we have hit the side of the garage trying to get it out of gear because everything is so rusted. we have contacted toyota & have been told it's a maintenance issue not a defect. this truck 100% a defect! it is a pile of metal sitting in our driveway because i refuse to put my family in it. it us irresponsible to drive this vehicles, so in our & the publics best interest it sits in our driveway.

I found portions of the frame rusted thru and could not mount step bars. i mentioned this earlier in a report. i also just found my spare tire missing and found the bracket holding it had rusted and the tire was lost while driving. when and where is unknown. toyota examined the truck 2 years ago for a recall for rust issues and said everything was ok.the tire loss is irritating and dangerous to other drivers.

When installing side rails i discovered the frame of the vehicle had rusted thru at the location i was going to drill a hole. the truck will not pass inspection and there are safety concerns. toyota will not address the issue. there have been recalls for frame issues in the past and it appears toyota has not solved the problem. there may be many more vehicles out there and do not know they have a weakened frame. toyota needs to do more to resolve the issue.

I had the frame rust under coating 'band aid' applied to my 2002 toyota tundra by a toyota dealer in lynchburg va in 2011. the frame rust has reappeared so i took it back to the dealer asking for a new band aid to fix this problem and was told there was no warranty on the first fix and toyota will do nothing. i feel like it is toyota's responceability to repair or fix the underbody rust problem because they knew about this and are trying not to fulfill their obligation under the rust recall agreemeent with the court.

Took the truck in for recall inspection of rear as per recall notice #bxd ssc. was told by sunnyside toyota that the rear part was fine but the other part of frame is badly corroded. they/and the toyota manufacturer said that this portion of frame is not covered under recall. estimate of repair cost $15,000. remarks on vehicle inspection report: 99 front section of frame has a large hole that we feel is getting to the point of being dangerous/not part of bxd campaign

Toyota rust thru frame recall...... i had the rear spare tire carriage assy and cross member. replaced. they forgot my free undercoating until i called them. and complained . but my complaint is they did not inspect the exanded front frame until the recall waranty had expired...then they took pictures and told me to "beg my case" to corporate. to which they denied; as the time limit had expired. my clam is :if the dealership had notified me ,in time, they would have found the 4 inch long by 1/4 inch wide rust thru n my frame , definaely in the recall area. it took the dealer 1 year to warranty undercoat the frame of the recalled areas as the dealership had[ a] moved to a new location ... and [b] they were not trained in the application . my settlement desired iis for toyota to replace my frame.

While traveling on a city road at about 25 mph, the right front wheel came off. i was towed to my mechanic for repair. both the tow driver and my mechanic told me they had seen this previously in toyota tundra's. i later found that there was a recall (ssc 50 j) and, after email correspondence with toyota and dealership approval of the workmanship performed by my mechanic, applied for a refund of my expenses. when i was denied the first time, the service manager at hollywood toyota said that he would resubmit by fax, saying that he saw nothing more that the office could want and that he had submitted the toyota service order for his inspection of my truck, a service order which the office claimed they did not have. the claim was denied again, this time because i had no records of maintenance on or inspection of the faulty ball joints. (there is no way to maintain the ball joints, and there is no way to inspect them, as they are inside a rubber boot.) the denial also stated that my mechanic's invoice was missing detail, although did not state what detail was missing, even upon written request. hollywood toyota's service manager said the detail on my invoice was greater than toyota itself provides and called someone up the line to find out what the issue was. he called more than once. no response. and, when there was no answer after two weeks, called again. nothing. note: if there is a way to attach, i would like to attach the full complaint i have written up and will be mailing to your offices.

I would like to report an unsafe condition discovered on my 2002 tundra. with 158000 it was discovered that the front half of the frame has rotted out/ several large perforations make the vehicle unsafe to drive. this is even though the vehicle had gone through a previous recall campaign in which the frame was inspected and rust inhibitor applied to rear of frame. *tr

Vehicle has 121,000 miles on it. the frame has now cracked due to rust perforation and makes the vehicle unsafe to operate. toyota is aware of the rust issues on their tundra models years 2000-2003 and has commenced at least 3 different campaigns to address this issue. the truck was brought in for all 3 recalls the last one in 2012. toyota's solution was to spray them with rust inhibitor and send the customer on their way. this is nothing more than putting a band aid on a hemorrhaging wound. most of the frames had already experienced frame corrosion. when i spoke to toyota's customer service center on 4/15/15 they issued me a case number and said i would receive a call back. toyota called back today 4/16/15 and said they would do nothing for me as the rust corrosion campaign ended in december 2013. i think the government needs to step in and force toyota to fix or replace these trucks.i am sure many owners have no idea they are driving around with perforated frames that are unsafe. my damaged frame was discovered during a routine oil change. *tr

Truck needed sensor replaced for safety inspection sticker (check engine light on). mechanic found frame underneath to be so rusted he was not comfortable working on the truck. i took the truck to local dealer and they agreed the truck is rusted to point of being unsafe. they took pictures to send corporate for frame replacement approval. request was denied. i then called toyota customer service several times before they agreed to assign a case number. i was eventually told that although truck is unsafe, there is nothing they will do since campaign is closed. i had the truck sprayed as initial recall stated. i received no other recall or requested service information from toyota. i now have a truck with low mileage that will not pass inspection and is unsafe to drive and toyota will do nothing to make sure their customers are safe or care about the safety of other drivers on the road should parts of my frame start falling off while driving. i find this practice very neglectful especially for a large corporation. i have seen that many others are in the same position with their tundra. i would like to know what can be done to rectify this safety issue. toyota should be made accountable. *tr

I have a 2002 toyota tundra that i bought from del toyota in thorndale pa. i bought this truck new from this dealer. toyota sent me a letter for the recall of the frame. i took my truck to del toyota to have the frame looked at in 2012 and they said the frame just needed sprayed. i was fine with that. the problem is now my frame has 4 inch holes in it up by the engine on both sides. there is not whey my frame would have rusted out that fast since the dealer looked at it in 2012. so i took my tundra back to the dealer to have them inspect the holes and they told me they would call toyota to get a new frame on it because i had the truck in during the recall period the first time. little did i know toyota said they will not replace my frame because the recall period is over. then del toyota told me to call toyota corp and talk to a case manager. so i called toyota corp and talked to [xxx] (the case manager) and she told me toyota would not replace the frame because the recall period is over. i told her my truck was in for the recall and they sprayed it when the frame should have been replaced. she told me again toyota will not replace my frame. so now i am stuck with a unsafe vehicle that i feel unsafe driving and will not pass inspection anymore. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Toyota tundra continue to have corrosion and rust on frame,last inspection on 1/1/12 in a toyota dealership they check for corrosion and did not find any,which is not accurate because as of 9/1/14 rust and a actual hole and crack was found by a certified frame technician..he said this should have been caught in year of 2012 because metal does not rust that quickly.it takes more that a couple years to actually cause a hole and cracks. toyota just did a visual and did not look thoroughly , they did not want to go to the expense of taking care of the problem leaving a unsafe vehicles on the roads and risking people lives. *tr

When driving over unequal pavement on road, felt and heard noise at rear of vehicle. saw wheel tumbling down road behind vehicle. stopped vehicle and noticed that it was spare tire from vehicle. placed spare tire in bed of truck and when i got home, noticed that the bracket/plate that was securing the spare tire to the underside of the bed had separated from the cable that was holding it in place. the bracket/plate was so corroded/rusted that when the truck hit the bump, the weight of the spare wheel caused it to collapse and allowed the spare tire to fall onto the road. *js

The rear transaxle hub does not have a bolt on cover, but is welded solid to the axle casting. i noticed oil on the ground and investigation reveals the hub cover has rusted thru, allowing oil to run out. if all of the oil had drained out and the vehicle driven,the axle could have seized up,causing a serious vehicle crash and personal injury or death.toyota was notified via local dealership, and they denied any coverage. between the environmental impact and the safety issue,and the fact it is not repairable, makes me want to complain. the leak was temporarily plugged with epoxy, but has recently failed again. november 23,2013 .checking various internet web pages, this apparently is a common problem across all toyota trucks and most year models, not just tundra.with the frame rust thru and cross member rust thru recall,all of these recall areas are within inches of my rust thru / perforation of even thinner sheet metal in a critical location. please review . *tr

I noticed a pool of oil under my rear axle. i inspected it and saw that the welds were failing due to excessive rust. i had the frame and brake lines replaced under the recall and this is clearly related to the rust problems (i had the power steering rack replace last month due to rust) but toyota won't fix it until there is a recall. i had it repaired (the whole axel replaced) at a local garage for approx. $2,340. with the power steering rack repair that comes to ~ $3,300 in less than 2 months. the garage said they see these problems all the time on the tundras with the frame recall. *tr

I was pulling out of my driveway and experienced a sudden and complete loss of power steering and was unable to complete the turn, stopping in the middle of the road. one of the connections on the power steering rack had completely separated due to rust and the power steering fluid was pouring out. if i had been going at higher speeds (such as driving on a highway or taking an off ramp) it would have been extremely dangerous as it would have been hard to impossible to maintain control. the rust is clearly excessive and hard to believe it is not related to the recall that covered the frame and brake lines (which i had replaced under the recall a few years back after some trouble with the dealership claiming it did not qualify). a local garage replaced the steering rack at a cost of over $900. i took photos of the failed rack. i called the national toyota number and had a case manager assigned to my complaint. the best that toyota offered was to have me tow it at my expense to the dealership 40 miles away to have them inspect it while the dealer was telling me they have seen a number of these fail and toyota has not been admitting that the problem with them is their fault. i have a 1998 corolla that has no rust issues at after the same conditions for more years. *tr

We had taken our vehicle in for a recall to our local dealership and they said the frame of our vehicle was not bad but they did the undercoat option. that was less than a year ago and now our frame on our vehicle is severely rusted and they are saying there is nothing we can do about it because the time has expired. we also called toyota and they said that it was expired and it is up to the dealership to decide what to do. in our opinion they should have just done the frame replacement at the time of the first visit! if the undercoating was to take care of the issue why now are we having issues!! what is more important than the safety of a customer and the people surrounding them when they drive!!! *js

I had recall for my tundra bed and there were going to resolve the rust issue at no charge. i took my truck to bobby rehal toyota in mechancisburg pa. they broke a part that wasn't part of the recall. they told me and if i wanted my truck back i had to pay for it. i tried to resolve with bobby rehal and toyota main office and they told me to pay if i wanted my truck and the part they broke was not part of the recall. i explained i didn't need or want this recall but was told it was a no cost recall by letter. i paid it but now i just received another recall for airbag but how can i take my truck to toyota not knowing the outcome of the recall so i may choose to do nothing because i cannot be sure they won't make me pay again for something i didn't want/need in the first place. thanks. *jb

Severely rusted frame. may impact structural integrity. just learned that a neighbor had their frame replaced recently, and discovered my frame is severely rusted too. today toyota dealer said there was a recall (but it ended last year). i never got a notification (letter) of the recall. dealer could not make the repairs for me. *tr

I was driving down a "very" steep graded and winding gravel road that required consistent braking and as i was making a turn to negotiate a right turn on a curve, my steering all of a sudden failed to exist. the steering wheel seriously resisted my turning it. i was forced to apply the brakes quickly to attempt going over the side of the road and down a deeply sloped ravine of about 20 feet or so. the truck stopped with the front wheels "just over" the edge but did stop before going "over". luckily i had a "come-along" with me and was able to crank the truck backwards enough to get the front wheels back on to the road surface. i haven't carried that with me in years ! i had to baby the truck about a mile at very low speed to get back in to town. the steering wheel was/is very difficult to turn. i "could not" make a typical turn at very slow speed and not use the opposing side of the road. i got the truck home and shut it down. i suspected a power steering leak and checked to find it was out of fluid. i used my friends vehicle to buy power steering fluid, filled it, checked and found fluid spraying out of both ends of what is known as the "rack" or tube? it took less than a few "seconds" for it to drain totally. i checked the internet to learn this is not uncommon. i did a close physical inspection to find much corrosion. this truck was the subject to the recall for and received a new chassis as a result of excessive corrosion. i consider myself very lucky. this could have been much worse ! *tr

The 2002 toyota tundra has known issues with the front rotors and pads and service bulletin about the problem for corrections to be made. i complained to the dealer about the problem in 2003 with maybe 20,000 miles if that. the problem was corrected under warranty, that is, the rotors and pads were replaced, so i was told, but with the same problematic parts that were issued with the truck. the calipers, which have been reported as undersized for the vehicle, were not touched. eventually the shimmy becomes bad enough it negatively affects the brake system. toyota knew of the issue but did not follow through in truly correcting the problem. *tr

Had frame replaced per recall, 5/2012. had been smelling gas after fill ups so had airport toyota, vandalia, ohio - repair while they had truck torn apart- told me the gas tank port was corroded so they put new gasket on. now i am smelling gas on passenger side. i am taking truck back to toyota. i am concerned about the corroded gas tank because i had it repaired once before. i believe this problem is just as important as the corroded tank straps that were replaced in 2010. it's not something that is seen easily. *tr

Fortunately i was off the interstate when making a right hand turn into a convenience store...........the steering suddenly became almost impossible to turn, actually causing me to turn into the outgoing lane at the store entrance. there was no advanced warning....just no steering on turns and no brake fluid in the resevoir. the toyota deal says the steering rack needs replacement.($1600)......and could not explain exactly where the fluid went. this was suppose to be a 300,000 mile vehicle, now stands at 116,457. had to replace a stabilizer as well due to corrosion. i just sold my 1997 grand am with 224,000. and my 1988 dodge caravan had 244,000 before the transmition went. toyota and reliability???????? *js

I am the owner of two toyota vehicles. vehicle one is a 1992 toyota pickup extended cab 4x4 3.0 v6 with 220,000 miles on it i bought it with 124,000 miles on it. vehicle two is a 2002 toyota tundra sr5 4.7 v8 with 47,000 miles i bought it with 39,000 miles on it with only one previous owner. the new frame is installed on the truck but i have noticed now that my rear axle housing is completely rotted and rusted out and leaking all over the place. the structure of this is not safe and i travel an average 6,000 miles a month for work. my 1992 toyota truck with 219,000 miles rear axle is in better shape than the 2002 toyota. i have spoke with toyota directly and they refuse to do anything about the situation. there should be a law suit against toyota for not replacing these rear axles because the same metal was obviously used on the frame that was replaced. i have now seen many of the same trucks around my town with the same problem and have read many complaints on the internet about this recurring situation. it is in toyota's best interest to take care of the problem before there is a class action against them. *tr

The rear frame and cross members are so rusty that it is causing the bed to rust from the frame up. everywhere the bed attaches to the frame it has rusted through. eventually the rust will be so bad that the rust around the bolt holes will no longer keep the bed attached to the frame . this is definitely a safety issue and toyota tells me that no recall has been issued for the beds of the rusty trucks. *kb

Any speed above 40mph produces a violent shake/wobble from the front end. going down a slope and /or applying the brakes makes the problem worse. this is the second time in 2 years that i have had to replace the rotors, calipers and pads at a considerable cost to myself. both times the symptoms were the same and the cause was the same. the plungers on the right front caliper sticks and causes the pad to maintain contact with the rotor and overheating it causing the rotor to warp. the warp in the rotor produces the shaking which is extremely unsafe. i don't tow or haul heavy loads, i don't drive excessively fast nor do i use excessive braking, still the problem recurs. *tr

Took my 2002 tundra to a local toyota dealer for a second time to inspect frame after being told by an independent licensed mechanic that my frame was perforated/rotted, the rear end housing was leaking, the spare tire hanger was broken,(tire missing), all heat shields were either broken,loose or missing and front brakes were in need of being replaced again. front brake rotors, pads and calipers were replaced 11/09/07. all of this had occurred since 05/06/2010 when the truck was last on his lift. harr toyota performed a frame inspection and verified all of the above failures. they also did the frame crossmember inspection in 01/10 and the truck passed. they specified that the frame failure was @lt rail/trans mt. they also said the rt ft sway bar link was broken, and noticed an exhaust leak. they declared that in spite of the frame failure it was safe to drive just don't do any offroading! so i guess that hitting a pothole would not be advised.! they told me that the brakes were unsafe, and not covered under any recall. i am very upset at the condition/value of my truck. i am also very upset that nhtsa is letting toyota get away with the "warranty enhancement" of replacing the frame only of these trucks. toyota and its dealers denied the rust problem for years. my problem started when the vehicle was still under warranty, and i was blamed for the failure. in the years that toyota has denied a problem with the tundra, the frame rust has infected, most if not all, of the truck. both bumpers are rotting off. the gas tank had to be patched (05/2010) because it was leaking fuel from a rust spot under one of the support straps. toyota will replace other compromised parts at the owners full expense. in my opinion they are using the frame replacement to generate part sales and repair business to help defer costs. nhtsa- please force a more comprehensive recall! !

2002 toyota tundra recalled for frame rust issues. took nearly 5 months for repairs, even with multiple calls to dealer and corporate. vehicle needed further repairs when returned for broken right front stabilizer bar. then failed sticker inspection because of dry rot in tires presumably from sitting so long? 1) nhtsa needs to set a reasonable time frame for vehicles to be repaired once recalled. five months is unacceptable. (2) nhtsa should review whether commingled old rusty 're-usable' parts with a new solid frame isn't in fact creating another issue causing the older parts to fail (there are many reports by bloggers of other things breaking or needing repair post the frame replacement . i personally feel less safe post recall than before (3) nhtsa should be doing post recall follow ups to ensure that toyota is properly repairing recalled vehicles, especially toyota's given their recent history. there are reports out there that things like tow hitches are not being replaced because they were 'after market' and in my case, the side steps were simply thrown in the back of the truck because they were too rusty to re-install. they also did not replace front and rear shocks and struts which have to have been compromised by the other rust issue? and (4) toyota has some severe customer service issues that it needs to address. *tr

I own a 2002 toyota tundra and i have had approximately five occasions where i heard a clunk while driving the toyota tundra as if the transmission was slipping during the month of july 2010. on august 13, 2010, i was driving approximately 75 mph when i had driven the tundra approximately 200 miles, i pulled off of the highway to refill with gasoline and as i slowed down to the pump, the tundra began to excessively shake and stalled. i then started the vehicle up which started well and i cut it off to refill with gasoline. once i began to take off, the tundra began to shake again and stalled, not more than 1/10th of a mile from the pump. i started the vehicle again and when i put the tundra in gear, the tundra continuously stalled no matter whether in drive, neutral or reverse. every time i started the vehicle and put it in a gear, it would stall. the vehicle was towed to my residence which was approximately 100 miles. my failure mileage was approximately 89,000 miles. *tr

I have owned a 2002 toyota tundra 4x4 since 2002. in july of this year i experienced a near wreck when i hydroplaned and was unable to regain control. when i tried to gain control i felt as if the truck was going to roll and i was forced to drive off the highway. although i did not collide with anything i did have some damage to the rear axel with noises coming from it. the next day i took the truck to a local garage to inspect the vehicle and they found nothing. not stopping there i crawled under and i found a broken link bolt on the right front sway bar. upon inspection of the link bolt i found that the link had rusted to less than half of it's original diameter which lead to its failure. taking this issue up with a toyota dealer i had them repair both sides of the sway bar links. when the left link was removed it too was found to be broken. the design of the links are such that water and road salt can settle in the bushings causing them to rust. the broken links are likely why i was unable to regain control of my vehicle and caused damage to the rear end gears and axle. i have had this vehicle in for safety inspections on numerous occasions and nothing was found to be wrong. if professional technicians can't detect this problem than how can an owner and how can these owner's feel safe with these undetectable problems. i have saved these parts and feel that they are worthy of closer inspections. *tr

My 2002 tundra and my sisters 2001 tundra have been recalled twice for rust issues, the first was for gas tank and straps, the second for frame rust. we brought our trucks to herb chambers in auburn ma. for the second time we were told they were fine. exception was they wanted me to bring my 2002 back because they were "replacing gas tank straps in all recalls as a precaution." the problem with this is that they told my sister no such thing. our vehicles are only 8 years old, both gas fill doors rusted shut and we had to break them open to get gas and then replace the locks, my battery housing rusted and i almost lost my battery. our runners are rusting, the side of my truck is rusting, we both find rust lines on the road or in the garage along the sides of our trucks. a bracket rusted and severed my brake line when i took a turn, my sisters power steering line was severed by a rusted part. yet our cars are "fine". i was also told that "with the tacoma's we looked for perforations with a hammer and a pick like tool but with the tundra we will visually inspect for perforations so you won't have to wait long." my issue is why do i now need gas tank straps? perhaps this will help if any future issues arise. plain and simply i think that toyota is not being up front and that is dangerous. thank you *tr

I encountered the same transmission failure that's similar to other nhtsa odi reports. the problem - which i understand is fairly common with this 2002 toyota tundra - started with rough shifting and clunking noises in the power train at around 60,000 miles. the odd sounds started intermittently at highway speeds and then became more frequent and then finally resulted in failure at around 111,000. the transmission quit at a highway intersection stop 140 miles from home in january, 2010. it would not go into proper gear after stopping on the highway. the vehicle was towed to the nearest toyota dealer in victoria, texas on saturday evening for repair work that was eventually done four days later at a total out-of-pocket cost of nearly $4,000 (parts, labor, rental car, towing; does not include missed work)...this vehicle has been maintained properly by my toyota dealer. so the transmission should not have failed so soon, as my other trucks (ford, dodge, and even nissan) never required transmission replacements, leaving me stranded in harm's way along a rural highway. so my next pickup truck will most likely not be a toyota. *tr

I have a 2002 toyota tundra that is leaking gas. initially i noticed a fuel smell when i walked by the truck which progressed to seeing fuel on the ground. if i put too much gas in the truck, over 1/2 tank, you can see the fuel leaking through the 4x4 fuel tank protective cover. i had the truck put on a lift and was told that fuel was leaking from the seam of the tank. i recently took my truck to toyota in response to the recall re:excessive frame rust and my truck passed that inspection. i have less than 51,000 miles on this truck and i am afraid to drive it on the highway. i have lived in ma for 22 years and have never had a fuel tank problem. on 04/06/10 i took my truck to a required yearly inspection. my check engine light was on and the garage told me that my vehicle had failed the emissions test. i have been following other owners reports online and have noticed that more people are reporting leaking fuel tanks. extensive research indicates that aftermarket gas tanks are not available for this model/year so i must have toyota either do the work, or minimally, get the part from them. based on their recent reputation, i am not thrilled about taking my truck back to them. i have 60 days from the failure date to get it repaired and reinspected to avoid losing my registration! i need this truck to be safe for me and all the other drivers that i encounter. can you please look into this safety concern? *tr

We bought a used 2002 toyota tundra on 6-16-2005 that had 45,134 miles on it. it now has 109,000 miles on it . when we first bought the truck from the dealership, the brakes were replaced before we took it home because we noticed a vibration. since then, we have replaced the brakes, pads, etc. twice. we now have to have the vehicle service again because while driving the truck shakes violently at around 40 mph and braking literally shakes the entire truck. it seems highly unreasonable to have to replace the braking system 4 times in three years of ownership. i believe that there is a serious defect in the braking system in the 2002 toyota tundra that could lead to accidents causing injury or death. when will toyota recall these vehicles due to manufacturing defects in their braking system? i am starting the incident date as of the date of purchase since that is when we first had the brakes replaced. i now have to pay more money to have the entire truck braking system corrected again so that we do not end up in harms way. toyota needs to step up and review all the complaints that have been filed about this complain. something is wrong with the braking system in this vehicle. *tr

I was driving in a large parking lot at a speed not more than a walk. i took my foot off the brake pedal and touched the accelerator pedal and the truck surged forward hard enough that the three people in the truck were thrown back against their seats. i immediately braked and the truck came to a stop without further incident. the acceleration was sudden and violent, and the only reason an accident did not occur was that there were no other vehicles or pedestrians in front of the truck when the incident occurred. the truck is a toyota 2002 tundra with the v-8 engine. *tr

Do your job nhtsa. the 2000-05 tundras have a brake problem. how many complaints do you need to recall an obvious safety problem that toyota has ignored? they are on the ropes now for some of the other problems that they have been ignoring for years. you can act tough and strike now, while they are unable to strike back. *tr

The fill neck on the gas tank is very difficult to put gas into my truck. i must use a screwdriver at times to fill my gas tank. i feel that this would be very dangerous at a service station, because that if a spark from the screwdriver being forced into the fill neck could ignite the fumes. *tr

My 2002 toyota tundra truck is not drivable at this time. the truck was brought to toyota dealership after a local mechanic found fluid leaking from rear differential due to rust/rot. during the dealers inspection, they also noted a gas smell and suspect that the gas tank or gas lines are leaking also. the dealer did a frame inspection and while the whole frame is excessively rusted, the frame passed the recall test because it had not been perforated yet. the dealer did not want to even remove the differential plug because the whole unit was so rusty. i have been under the truck and personally seen the excessive rust on the frame, fuel system, and suspension components. amazingly, the body panels have little or no rust and in very good condition. during previous dealer visits we were verbally told that the rust was normal. the repair estimate for gas tank/lines and new differential housing, etc. was approximately $7000. i purchased this truck new and have always done all required maintenance and was planning on having the truck for a long time. it currently has 89,101 miles on it. the excessive rust is not normal and i feel that the frame and some associated components are defective. i feel that due to the nature of these defects that the vehicle is unsafe to drive and i'm guessing that it would be difficult to sell and if i did, it would be at a greatly reduced value. i purchased a toyota truck because of their reputation for building long lasting, high quality vehicles. i feel that in light of these defects that they misrepresented their product. *tr

Approx every 3000 miles the rotors warp and have to be replace. it is a dangerous situation if traveling or pulling trailers. i do not do either and very careful with truck. still happens. dealer didn't do the tsb before i bought it with 16,000 miles on it. i don't put many miles on it so it was out of warranty when first had the problem. didn't realize it was a recurring problem until the second time i had to have it fixed. lots of forums on the same problem. no coop from toyota or dealers. *tr

The spare wheel/tire fell off my 2002 toyota tundra as i passed over a speed bump (at a very low speed) whilst leaving an apartment complex. i was unaware of having lost the wheel but my son, who lives in the complex, saw the incident & called me - by the time he called i was on the highway driving at high speed - if the wheel had fallen off whilst i was on the highway the consequences could have been catastrophic. i submitted a report (case # 208366) to nhtsa 11/25/09 after going on line & discovering that corrosion was an issue with the frame of this vehicle & that other incidents of a similar nature had been reported & that toyota were preparing a remedy. on 01/10/10 i contacted my local toyota sealer & was advised to bring in the vehicle at my convenience when the spare wheel would be safely secured within the truck bed pending a permanent fix for the problem. *tr

2002 and 2003 toyota tundra brakes warp every 10,000 miles. i have owned a 2002 toyota tundra since it was new. at 35,000 miles, i began to experience a brake problem with violent shaking of the front end. my normal mechanic told me that it was warped front break rotors and they would have to be ground down flat. i did this and then experienced the same problem at approximately 45,000, 55,000 and 65,000 miles. i am now nearing 75,000 miles and the vibration is starting. i only drive about 10,000 miles a year and have had heavy loads on the truck about 5 times in the last 8 years. my mechanic showed me a set of instructions that mechanics had for upgrading toyota tundra breaks because of a design problem with undersized front disc brakes and drum brakes in the back after my last brake job. i contacted my toyota dealer and was told that brakes are generally covered and are considered routine maintenance. however, they were aware that the brakes on the 2002 -2003 tundras had a design problem and did not hold up properly. they continued that the brakes had been upgraded with a labor only charge for anyone who contacted them within the first 3 years or 36,000 miles. they also stated that this brake upgrade kit was no longer available as a kit and i would have to purchase the parts separately if i wanted to fix the problem. the cost of the parts is over $2000 without labor. the toyota 800 number told me i had no options because brakes are routine maintenance, period. currently, my only plan is to continue to have my rotors turned every 10,000 miles until i need new ones. hopefully other tundra owners will do the same or their safety will be greatly compromised. my front end suspension is also showing wear. *tr

2002 toyotas tundra sr5 extended cab: on sunday 8/15/09 brakes failed and i evacuated vehicle because of smoke coming out of engine compartment. vehicle towed to repair shop, mechanic discovered that rack and pinion had rusted through and brake fluid caused the smoke as it burned on the engine block. the break lines did not fail it was a hole in the assembly through which the brake fluid escaped. very serious incident that could have resulted in an accident has it occurred while driving at speed, incident occurred while i was leaving my driveway. i called toyota on 8/21/09 to report failure and find out if there was recall, number called, 800-331-4331 ext 5, ref number for call 0908132654. toyota informed me that there was no recall. i am reporting this incident now, 11/25/09, in light of the recent recall for rusting frame member. my loss a brakes resulted from the corrosion of a component that my mechanic was surprised to see fail. this was a first during his 15 years working as a mechanic. *tr

While driving on the highway i would occasionally hear a slight "clunk". sounded like it might be the transmission. this first occurred around 85k miles. then again about a year later. after the second or third time, i took the car a transmission specialist. they reported that the overdrive gear bearing was failing and this was common on the early tundras. apparently the needle bearing begins to fall apart and eventually the whole transmission goes out. rebuilding the transmission costs just about as much as replacing it and there was already damage to the gears. end result -- i had to replace the entire transmission at 100k miles. if this is truly a common failure, it seems that toyota put these trucks on the road with a transmission that wasn't up to the task. i rarely haul heavy loads or trailers and consider my use of the truck to be very gentle. hardly anything that would cause the early demise of a transmission. *tr

I have a 2002 toyota tundra pu that was built it 2001. the frame of the vehicle is experiencing severe rust. pieces of rusted metal have fallen from the vehicle¿s frame. the spare tire is also in a rusted/pitted condition. the vehicle has gone only 40,247 miles and i live in massachusetts. the truck is in mint condition throughout with the exception of rust and metal deterioration located only on the frame. i brought the vehicle to the local dealer and they acknowledged that the rust/deterioration was severe, especially for the low mileage. however, they did conduct an inspection and determined that the frame was not perforated. my concern is that the deterioration will get worse overtime, and due to the low miles the vehicle would be on the road for many years. as a result, a safety failure in the frame would be probable. the dealer said that i could call the toyota rep. to voice my concerns. he also said that they would inspect the vehicle¿s frame each time i bring the truck in for service, if i requested it. this type of frame deterioration is not acceptable for only 40, 247 miles. i also keep the truck in a garage. thank you for your time and attention. *tr

I have a 2002 toyota tundra sr5. headlight lens material has become blurred and more opaque in recent years, causing driving at night to be less illuminated and more hazardous. this began developing a few years ago, approximately 2005. i attempted to use a lens polishing product, but that produced only marginal improvements. the lenses continue to deteriorate over time, and it is only the headlight lenses while the same lens material is crystal clear over the marker lights. the lens material was poorly designed for use with headlights and appears to react poorly to the higher heat produced from the headlight bulbs. this is a serious safety hazard. *tr

I have had the tundra and 5th wheel trailer combination since they were both new in 2002 and towing has been excellent. this trip however, i hit a 'bump' on rt. 93 southbound (heavy traffic) in medford, ma and the spare tire broke off of the holder. it proceeded to bounce up into the front compartment of the trailer and then dropped down and lodged between the trailer's axles. at least no one was injured, but the vehicles were damaged. i had about $5,000 in repair bills relating to the 'accident'. my concern is that the spare tire/wheel had never been off of the tundra and they were 'new' except for their age. it appears that the amount of rust on the tire hanger bracket was a major cause of the wheel dropping. i have pictures and the replaced parts for your inspection if desired; you can see rust-out holes right through the bracket! i am concerned that this could be happening to many other tundra's of a similar age. i would like to at least offer some form of warning to other owners. after toyota's email response, basically saying this was never heard of before and calling the holder bracket a 'cover', i sent a second email: my concern now is that you have referred to the rusted-out bracket that holds the tire under the truck's bed (part # 51900-0c010 on my repair invoice.) as a 'cover, i'm hoping that we are speaking of the same piece of equipment. my suggestion involves safety more than warranty or money. if other tundra's have the same rotting out of that bracket, other tires will fall off of those trucks. by the way, my tundra looks like new and is in excellent condition; so i'm presuming that others may be even worse and that my vehicle is likely in average or better condition. if this truly is a potential issue for others, at least warning them to evaluate it would be appropriate; i surely would have appreciated it! *tr updated 03/25/10 *bf pictures received. updated 10/05/10

While driving on the freeway my truck made a bad sound from the transmission a gear grind clunk noise. i pulled off the freeway asap and put it in park. there was no fluid draining or any thing. when i went to put it in drive it was hard to go into gear. but it drove ok so i went to my appointment less than a mile away. from there my wife picked me up and we did some christmas stuff and got back to the car later than expected and i had to drive it home (aprox 5-7 miles). at first it was ok then clunk grind jump neutral in a bad spot on the freeway. i was able to get it about another mile to safety it jumped again and no gears. i had to push it out of harms way and jacked up my back. i was trying to stay off the operating table for my back now if im on my feet more than couple of hours i am bed ridden from days to weeks. at the beginning of the day perfect vehicle with 34000 miles now needing a $4500 transmission. i checked with some shops and a couple of dealers and they all said the same thing broken main shaft, factory defect weak main shaft. toyota would not pay for it. 2002 vehicle. i notified toyota the vehicle was in storage in california and would be started from time to time to keep my warranty as i am handicapped and could not get back to it. now they had no info on this and i had to pay to fix a 34k mile toyota for a defect and now get a back operation. *tr

My 2002 toyota tundra limited extended cab 4x4, v-8, has a pulsating brake pedal since i took delivery of it on 2/1/02. every year when the truck was taken to the dealership for the pa.state safety inspection & emission inspection, i complained of this problem and on several of my dealer invoices this complaint is noted. at one point i took a tsb,(technical service bulletin) into the service manager and showed him that toyota had a problem with the front brake pads,calipers, and rotors on the tundra trucks,(2000 thru 2005).the original front brake pads,calipers and rotors were too small for this size truck causing the brakes to heat up and warp the rotors. toyota was trying to correct the problem by offering an updated front brake kit, which consisted of larger pads and calipers. i was told by the service manager that my truck already had this updated brake kit installed. this was absolute lie on his part because after reviewing the tsb and looking at the pictures of the old style pads and calipers verses the updated pads and calipers, it was obvious that my tundra had the old style and tsb was dated 9/12/02 and my truck was taken delivery of on 2/01/02. on 7/7/08, i took my tundra to the dealer for inspection and was told by the service manager that my truck needed brake pads and new rotors because of the pulsation caused by rotors. he told me that toyota had a problem with these brakes because they were to small for this size truck. my total bill for the pad,rotor,and inspections came to $498.84. when i told the dealership about the brake tsb on my truck they said it did not qualify for the tsb and there was nothing they could do.. have documented proof that indeed my truck did qualify for the tsb. i called toyota customer assistance and all i got from them was a lot negative attitude and they told me it was a dealer problem. basically, they told me to"go scratch". this brake problem is going to lead to heated brakes that will not stop the truck. *tr

2002 tundra 6 cylinder automatic transmission with 84,900 miles on it had total failure on i-10 while going 70mph. the engine continued to work but pushing the gas peddle did nothing. we safely pulled over, but the truck would not go forward or in reverse. i had complained to 2 different dealers of a bumping feeling and other abnormalities for several months, but neither dealer could detect a problem. i have maintained this truck as directed by the manufacturer and it is otherwise in excellent condition. i have only towed a trailer once with the trailer and cargo weighing less than 2000 lbs. however, the problems i complained of to the dealer occurred before i towed the trailer. fortunately, i had the toyota extracare extended warranty (7 years or 100,000 miles) which covered the cost of replacing the transmission with a reconditioned transmission. *tr

Front brake rotors continually warp on 2002 toyota tundra. have had rotors surfaced two times and replaced pads three times. brought this up to dealer during warranty period and was informed that this was not a warranty issue. *tr

The check engine light of our new toyota tundra truck turned on. i brought it back to the dealer for inspection/repair/replacement. its representative wrote in its evaluation that my son had abused its use and did not repair/replace the part. one evening, while my son and his girlfriend were on their way to a class field trip, the left lower ball joint of the truck broke off while traveling within the speed limit on a public road causing the left front tire to come off. traffic stopped behind and allowed my son to maneuver it safely on three tires to the side of the road where the truck flipped on its left side. my son and his girlfriend were very fortunate to survive this horrible accident with moderate injuries. some witnesses stopped to help them out of the truck. the paramedics and the sheriff came to the scene and had our truck towed to their impound facility. we towed our truck from the impound garage to a storage facility. my son filed a complaint with the bureau of auto repair and one of their technicians came to thoroughly inspect the truck for about a week and informed us of an impending recall on the lower ball joint. that same week, we got a recall notice in the mail from toyota corporation regarding the defective lower ball joint. about a month and a half later, we towed our truck and met with their representative at one of their orange county dealerships to inspect the defective part and the extent of damage to our truck. we received a call from their claims department regarding our case, i called the person back and left a message with him. i placed another call to him. up to now no action has been taken by toyota corporation regarding our case. *tr updated 09/30/08. *jb

Brakes wear out prematurely and vibrate when applying the brakes. no accident, just defective materials or bad engineering that should be corrected. brakes are too small to adequately stop the vehicle. toyota needs to recall and put larger brakes in to adequately stop the vehicle before accidents happen. *tr

My 2002 toyota tundra had the front brakes replaced 7,000 miles ago. when braking the truck shudders and shakes. i was told that the rotor is warped. the toyota dealer says this is a problem due to me driving hard on the brakes. this is false. i am very easy on the truck. now simultaneously the check engine light went on. the toyota dealer says the catalytic converter needs to be replaced. the cost of the part alone is $1,000.00 all this after i dealt with a problem with this truck in 2005. back then, at 58,000 miles, the engine threw a rod and the entire engine had to be replaced. is this truck a lemon or what? i am not hard on my vehicles. i own a 1994 honda accord that has 250,000 miles. i expected the same from toyota. i am very disappointed in the toyota tundra. why i am having to pay for new brakes 7,000 miles after replacing the front brakes? why is the catalytic converter failing? someone needs to hold toyota accountable for these problems. instead toyota wants to blame the consumer and say the consumer is at fault due the way the consumer is driving. *tr

Front suspension lower ball joint failure on 2002 toyota tundra. i have not had any problems with the ball joints leading up to this event. they have been checked off in routine maintanence of the vehicle every 3000-4000 miles as being in good condition! for this reason and for the recall (special service campaign 50j lower ball joint) that was issued on the same exact part that failed on my vehicle. after reading the recall i would like to know why this same part on my truck was not covered when it appeared in good condition to the service technicians, but then failed while driving under normal road conditions? " in extreme cases, the front suspension lower ball joint may separate from the knuckle causing a loss of steering control, thus increasing a possibility of a crash." quoted from (special service campaign 50j) this is exactly what failed on my truck and i was lucky that i was going slow when it happened because the entire passenger side front end slammed down to the tire hitting the pavement locking up the tire pulling the axle shaft out of the axle and pushing the fender into the passenger side door! there is no doubt, if this would have happened at a higher rate of speed, the vehicle would have rolled causing serious injuries! this vehicle has never been driven hard or has it gone off road into a hole, or that anything, that would cause that type of wear. for these reasons i believe that this is a manufacturer defect of some kind whether it was the scratched surface of the ball prior to assembly as in the recall or some other type i don't know! i would appreciate an investigation into the parts! thank you *tr

3 interior door handles broke off completely starting in 2004 front passenger door, then in 2005 right rear passenger, 2006 the driver handle broke. toyota did not want to repair said it was not a manufactures defect. everything is plastic and cheaply made, i had to pay for repair, feared that in an event of an accident i would be be able to exit my vehicle unless i rolled window down and opened door from outside handle. *tr

When applying brakes at speeds above 50 mph a shaking occurs in the front brakes, stopping distance is increased and controllability is harder to maintain. took vehicle to toyota dealer in town, and he said the brake system needed overhauling, and that there were two technical service bulletins br004-02 and br003-2 detailing the problem and fix. due to the fact that the truck was out of warranty, it would cost. *ak

I have a 2002 toyota tundra with a braking problem. i have had a vibration in the truck when breaking since we bought it new. i brought this problem to the attention of the two local toyota dealers, they both said that there wasn't anything wrong with the brakes. i just recently replaced the brakes and had the rotors turned. this did not help. it still vibrates and the brakes are spongy. i again talked to my local dealer and they finally said that they new that there was a problem with the brakes and it is very expensive to fix. of course they told me this after the warranty ran out. i have seen many other posts on this same issue, i believe an investigation is in order.

Automatic transmission failure, truck was not abused, well maintained, trans fluid was changed several times and always clean. very dissappointed in having to replace. have driven 3 toyota's over 200,000 miiles with no transmission problems. have heard of other trans failure in this year and model. only 12 months warranty on replacement.

Below you will read my complaint to michelin about the quality. the sidewall blew completely off the rim while traveling at a legal speed of 70 mph. this should not happen with a premium tire made by the above company. it only had a puncture which caused it to lose air. this was verified by the dealer of discount tire in santa fe. he did tell me that now tires fail immediately when they lose pressure and blow apart. this should not happen! you should at least be able to slow the car down to examine the tire. with this happening, they are exempt from replacing the tire as a failure and get away with selling you a new tire pro rated!! how convenient!! these tires will kill someone if they haven't already. see below my response to michelin and discount tire. it had half it's tread left!! ok.............so i am under the 6 year limit and the tire did have a puncture as told to me by the selling manager. the fact that the tire blew apart signifies to me that it was a defective tire. i have had many flats in my 66 years and never saw a tire come apart like this one. by the way, it was in a matter of seconds. i have attached photos of the tire for you to see and i will contact the dealer to see what he has to say. i can tell you this..............if this is the best explanation you have for a premium tire, i will not put another set of you tires on any of my vehicles. i will also do my best to inform the general public of your policies. i would expect more from a company that i have had a long standing relationship. too bad...........i see it as a sign of the times!! *tr

I bought my 2002 tundra new and experienced brake vibration almost immediately. the dealer said that the vibration happens when it is cold (bought in nov 2001) and it is normal. i did not believe this logic, then the dealer said there was nothing wrong with my vehicle and refused to do any work on it under warranty (but was willing to work on it if i paid; go figure). five years later the problem is getting worse and had to replace my pads several times. stopping distance on the highway is getting longer and more dangerous. i see here that i'm not the only one experiencing these issues. what is the nhtsa waiting for to initiate an investigation? for a bad accident to occur and someone dies?

Addendum to my odi 10150678: my reference to1/5/2006 napa "repair" was to no avail. larger tundra pads alone do not solve the violent downhill braking problem that so many others also describe. 2/20/2006 mileage 35,800. 3/07/2007 mileage 41850. as can be seen driving in colorado terrain is being done most reluctantly.*jb

I own a 2002 toyota tundra that has a manufacturer's defect in the braking system. this defect causes the front rotors to warp, which in turn causes my truck to shake violently during breaking and also hinders overall braking ability. after having my brakes serviced several times, i learned that toyota has issued a technical service bulletin addressing the defect in the braking system of my model truck and detailing how to fix the problem. the cost of said repairs exceeds $2000. i find it absurd that toyota recognizes the defect but refuses to execute a recall for the braking system. basically, the consumer is left with three options: 1) pay $2000+ to repair a manufacturer's defect; 2) pay for brake service about every 2 or 3 months; or 3) drive a vehicle with poorly functioning brakes. i, along with many others who have experienced the same problem as i, am currently driving a vehicle with poorly functioning brakes, because i cannot and will not afford the cost of either of the first two options. it remains beyond my understanding how toyota can get away with recognizing the problem with their vehicles but not atone for their poor craftsmanship. additionally, many other owners have reported that, while their vehicles were under warranty, their toyota service facility blamed the brake problem on individual braking habits. however, after their warranty expired, they informed them of the defect and offered to fix it at full cost. ridiculous. *jb

Tundra 2002 v6 vibrated badly at 45 mph. when checking, found 3 broken studs in the front wheels, 2 from the driver side and 1 from the passenger side. with some on-line research, a tsb for this particular model and year has issued back in 2003. yet, owners of this tundra model had never been made aware of it. while making a call to toyota corporation, a customer service representative stated that there is an upgrade brake system-calipers, brake pads, and other parts related to the front brake-available for free of charge for tundras that have had brake problems. when taking this problem to a local toyota dealer, no one seemed to take any action. 3 months later, they still didn't fix my car. brake history-several complaints about the brakes and rotors being worn out and warped fast have been brought up the local dealer. every time a complaint was made, the answer was that brake is not covered by the 3-year/36k warranty. when the studs broke off, dealer told me that they didn't document any of my complaints due to the facts that i never asked them to repair my brake. wow, it sounds like they have to rip me off before they document my complaints. if others got their brake system upgraded for free of charge, then why not me? *nm

My '02 toyota tundra would suddenly not idle on its on. then it would run normally. this has happened twice now. now i have to push the gas pedal half way to the floor to get any response. in researching the problem i discovered that there are a lot of people having the same problem. it is all related to either the throttle position sensor or the throttle level sensor. these parts cost around $275 each. toyota mechanics know there is a problem here but toyota will do nothing to help. *jb

I was driving about 30 mile per hour when my brake started to vibrate violently. after carefully inspected, i found that three studs were broken, two from the front left and one from the front right. a friend of mine, an auto mechanic, said that the studs might have been broken due to uneven wear of the rotors and loosen of the nuts. well, i have been complaining about my rotors warping too fast to the dealer, but i was told that brake system is not covered by the warranty. i brought this problem up several time, but the same thing answer was given to me. recently, i went back to the dealer and told the service manager about the incident. there i found out that all the complaints i made to the service department were not documented. i was told that they only documented if work orders were written. that means i have to pay them to document. the manager said he may considered replacing my brake system if the problem was documented before. toyota has heard and read hundreds of complaints about this brake problem. this problem is a safety issue and it should not be ignored. *nm

About two months after purchase. the vehicle would shake when the brakes were applied. the vehicle was taken to the dealer; a service technician said the rear drums were probably out-of-round. drums were resurfaced and brakes were good - for about two more months. problem recurred - taken back to dealer. shoes replaced. brakes good for 2 more months. problem recurred - dealer wouldn't do anything since out of warranty. taken to an independent shop where drums and rotors were machined. brakes were good for about two more months. truck again shakes when brakes are applied. the problem is ongoing. *jb

The shift lever broke from the steering column while i was shifting from park to drive. the metal support surrounding the steering column broke. the truck was totally disabled and needed to be towed. the shaft sub-assembly, the tube sub-assembly, the support tilt steering assembly, and some screws, bolts and washers needed to be replaced. i asked to save the old parts. *nm

Office of attorney general-toyota recall on ball joints. *ts the ball joint and spindle on the front drier's side failed and as a result the driver lost control of the vehicle and ended up in a culvert. the vehicle was towed to a toyota service facility who informed the consumer that the ball joint had been recalled. the consumer never received the recall notice from the manufacturer. *nm

My brakes have had squealing and since the vehicle was purchased. i was told it was dirty rotors and it couldn't be fixed. at about 12,000 miles it began to vibrate when braking. i was told the brakes were showing some wear, but it was normal. at the 15k mile check i again reported the vibration. again i was told it was normal wear. now at 23,000 miles i learned of a tsb issued for the vibration problem on my vehicle. when i took the vehicle to the dealer i was told i need a brake job, but the tsb only covers vehicles under 36,000m and 3 ears. my vehicle is over 3 years so i am told the tsb does not apply. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated the front disc rotors are defective. the rotors overheat and warp. the vehicle has been repaired twice. the first time the rotors were replaced. the second time the rotors were turned. when the brakes are applied the whole front end vibrates. the dealer informed the contact there was a service bulletin out to correct the problem which consists of replacing the current rotors with bigger ones, but the repair only applied to vehicles under warranty, therefore no repairs were made.

Vehicle purchased 4/22/2002. all of the pulsating, vibration while braking downhill (as described by so many in the preceding 21 complaints under "component" service brakes. hydraulic), occurred on: 8/20. 2002-warranty week., 5/1, 2003-more warranty work, finally on 1/5/2006 went to napa auto repair and finally paid for a sensible analysis of the problem and so far a good braking experience. current mileage is 35,800 miles!! i hope that somewhere in this complaint i will be able to share the reasoned analysis by napa regarding unsized front pads before i run out of space: larger pads for sequoia installed. sequoia has 4 wheel disc brakes-curb wt. 5280. tundra-curb wt. 4518. tundra rear brakes-drum. smaller pads in front than sequoia. initial problems seemingly develop when rear drum shoes wear down unevenly thereby putting more wear on small front discs. no "failures" or "deaths or "injuries" to report--(sorry) but only because most of us slow down before the inevitable occurs! warranty work on the two described occasions is listed as:"f. disc 1-sd gnd comb:opposite side rear brake drum (one side) r&r opposite side" in may, 2003 at 11,611 mi.: "replaced calipers per tsb, resurfaced front rotors, rear brake drum r&r, strut set (2) parking brake. replaced rear brake drums". i hope that my experience will generate some manufacturer recognition and admission to their problem. thank you, i.l. turner. *jb

2002 toyota tundra front drivers side ball joint and spindle failed. *ts when the ball joint and spindle failed it caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle and crash into culvert. the consumer was told that the faulty components had been recalled. the consumer never received the recall notice. *nm

The plastic link member of the rear side window latching pivot failed/broke/fractured when the window was latched closed. this occurred on both the driver and passenger side windows within about 2 months of each other at the end of 2005. it is apparent to me that this is a design defect as it occurred in both latches on a vehicle that is only 4 years old. the pin pressed into the mechanism, through the hole in the plastic link, is a split spring pin with a zig-zag 'tooth" pattern along the slit in the pin. i believe the "teeth" in this pin create a stress point on the inner diameter of the molded hole through the plastic link causing the link to fracture when the latch is closed as intended. the dealer from whom the vehicle was purchased has refused to replace the failed parts. *jb

Dt: contact states water enters the water tight joints in the wiring harness. this causes the pins to corrode and shorts out the rear tail light. the vehicle has been to dealership, but the vehicle is no longer under warranty and there have been no repairs made. *ak updated 1/11/2006. *nm

Dt: contact stated while driving his vehicle the front left ball joint spindle came undone. the front left tire dislodged and the vehicle dropped speed. he had no control. this, in turn, caused an accident. the truck went off the road and into a ditch. the vehicle was towed to a dealership. there was nhtsa recall 05v225000, but he never received a recall notice. the dealership told him this vehicle wa snot included in the recall due to vin. *ak

Consumer complaint regarding 2002 toyota tundra. the vehicle makes noise when turning left. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who determined that five of the lug nuts were loose due to stress. 5 of the lugs were left loose. one stud broke and one lug nut was holding the wheel in place. *ts the consumer noticed that the tire were worn and asked the service manager to have them checked. it was determined that they were indeed worm and the tires were replaced. after the tires were replaced the consumer notice a problem with the front end that was not there prior to the tire replacement. the dealer replaced all 6 lug nuts, 1 stud and cap which was installed incorrectly. the brakes were replaced at 20000 miles and 90000 miles. about 6000 miles after the last brake service the consumer notice a pulsation when the brakes were applied. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where they replaced the rotors. *nm

I have a 2002 toyota tundra, access cab. starting at approx. 30,000 miles, the brakes began to vibrate when applied. condition has progressively worsened, and now the truck front end shimmies considerably when applying the brakes. this creates a dangerous condition, particularly when driving down hill or in traffic. *nm

The front end steering rack let go, then the ball joints let go and the whole front end fell out causing 4,500.00 in damage as well as injury to my back. *jb

I have had multiple problems with my 2002 tundra trd 4wd. i have had it in more than 4 times for the brakes vibrating/pulsating and looks like i will be taking it in again as they are starting to vibrate again!! reno toyota has always done all the maintenance on it and keep trying to say it is my fault the brakes are bad and the rotors are warping. they replaced the rear axles a couple of months ago but i had to pay the $50 deductible. they also had to install a gasket on the crossover for the engine coolant as the factory never installed it. the ac doesn't get cool enough to cool the interior. whistling noise but don't know where it is coming from...sounds like coming from side mirrors??? i replace the wheels recently because of vibration because the wheels were warped. always have excessive brake dust on front wheels. transmission feels and sounds like it is slipping all the time. rough idle after warm up. i bought it new in july 2002 and now have 69400 miles on it. most of which are highway miles with no towing ever...no heavy hauling ever. am too afraid to drive it off-road because of all the brake problems...nevada=mountains=cliffs=death...i am not ready to risk my life or my grandchildren so will not even let me ride with me anywhere. *nm

Dt: the consumer was making a right hand turn about 2 mph when the truck started making a strange noise. the consumer got out of the truck and discovered that the wheel was off the truck, and the rest of the truck was sitting on where the wheel used to be. the wheel was face down on the road and the fender was on top of it. also, it caused body damage to the rest of the truck on the right fender. the location was the right front wheel. the consumer the dealer has been contacted, and they said that they could not do anything until they hear from toyota. this vehicle has not been in any accident that would have caused this to happen. the dealership said that they had a recall on the ball joints, and they would take care of all expenses at that time. they have not taken care of anything. *ak

Purchased 2002 toyota tundra nov 2001. jan 2004 vehicle would shake badly when brakes applied at 40+ mph. was told needed brakes replaced/rotors turned. needed rotors turned again dec 2004 and again june 2005. now aug 2005 same problem. with fast stops on freeway this shaking causes control problems which is a safety issue.*jb

From day one when i purchased my toyota tundra on 9/30/02 i have had a problem with the brakes. i brought the truck back 2 days later to tell the salesman that i felt that the brakes "shuttered" when the vehicle was driven in city traffic conditions and braking distance was increased the more that i drove the vehicle. they checked the truck that day and i was told that it was fine. now, almost 3 years later with only 27,000 miles the brakes are worn and the rotors have to be replaced. the dealer says that the brakes are not covered but they might replace the rotors. i see that there is a history with the rotors warping and causing the pads to fail prematurely. i don't understand how toyota can sit back with a blind eye when clearly there is a problem with the braking system. *nm

I own a 2002 tundra that has the brake vibration (warped rotors) problem now at 50,000 miles. the truck had 20,000 miles when the problem first surfaced and then took it to the dealer and got fixed, but the problem off course started again around 40,000 miles and when i contacted the dealer they told me that toyota will only cover the problem till 36,000 miles. this is a universal problem for this model. *jb

Several months ago i filed a report regarding the failure of both lower ball joints on my 2002 toyota tundra. since that time you have enacted a recall # 05v225000. i called toyota customer service to inquire about recouping my costs which exceeded a thousand dollars. toyota informed me that my vin # did not match with vehicles being recalled so they would take no action on my behalf. how is it possible that i have the correct year and make of vehicle and experienced the subject problem, but they are not required to correct the problem? *sc

This compliant is applicable to toyota tundra trucks ~2000 to 2003 models. a very strong brake vibration felt through-out the vehicle coming down mountain passes (i live in colorado). even with the appropriate down-shifting the brake vibration is frightening causing the driver to wonder if the vehicle will be able to be slowed after a while. this is a known defect to toyota motor corp and is addressed in the toyota service bulletin br004-02 and is only addressed upon complaint by the customer and then again only at no charge if the vehicle is within the warranty limitations. the fix is a design change in the form of repalcement of the front caliper assembly and the front rotors. the rear drums might also have to be replaced with drums of greater mass and rigidity, according to the tsb br004-02

Dt: the consumer states that she and her husband were traveling on the interstate between 70-75 mph and vehicle was not operating correctly. this was the first time that consumer noticed that the steering was not correct. the owners changed seating arrangements, and the wife took over driving after one hour and a half. the other driver noticed that the truck was pulling her into an 18 wheeler that was traveling besides her. the interstate was flat that they were traveling on. she was trying to apply brake pressure and get away from the 18 wheeler. the steering was uncontrollable before they crashed. the next thing that the owner remembered was that they were going off the road, with one tire in the dirt, and then the vehicle starts flipping. the vehicle was sitting up straight across both lanes that they were traveling. the police and ambulance arrived at the scene. . the owner's husband was killed in this accident, and there were two injuries who were taken by ambulance to the hospital. a police report was issued. the owner had just noticed the problem with the vehicle the day of the accident. the dealer was contacted, and aware of the accident. dealership reimbursed the owner on the rest of her extra extended warranty. the owner has not talked to toyota. also, the owner became aware of nhtsa recall. 05v225000. *ak *tt

Dt:contact complained about brake problems. when the brake were applied they were spongy and it required extended time/distance for the car to stop. the brakes have been replaced several times every 3-4,000 miles. the front and rear brakes were changed in 3/2005. *ak *nm

I own a 2002 toyata tundra. i, like many, as i am now finding out, am plaged by the same braking problems that so many are experiencing. before the 36,000 mi warranty went out i took the rruck to my dealer and they said that there was a service bulletin on the brakes. they replaced rotors, and calipers. after a while the same vibrating came back again. i took it back again and they turned the rotors and said that fixed the problem. since the warranty has run out , i have replaced the rotors twice and new pads every time. i love my truck but there is no dobt that they have a problem. i just need a solution, along with so many other tundra owners!!

Dt: the lower ball joints have failed causing the wheel to fall off severing the upper ball joints. this also damaged the brake lines and the abs sensors. the vehicle was towed to the dealer and the consumer contacted toyota who referred her to the nhtsa website. toyota denied there was a recall. no repairs as of yet. *jb

Dt: the owner was driving at 50 mph while towing, and could not control the vehicle and crashed. the vehicle was bouncing from guard rail to guard rail. when the owners came to a stop the vehicle was still right side up. the vehicle was totaled. both occupants sustained injuries. the passenger was hospitalized for a week with broken ribs and other internal injuries while the driver suffered from shock and a concussion. however, the driver sustained some injuries from the airbag. both are in physical therapy and the other therapy treatments. the driver is still suffering from headaches. there were no problems before the wreck. no noticeable problems to the vehicle with handling. there was no wobbling or any indication that this was going to happen. *ak *sc

Stop lamp socket failure. at 1st the bulb would stay in the socket and would only fall out every six months or so. in the last 1/2 year the bulb would fall out at least once a month. most of the time the bulb would fall out and end up laying in the lense casing and could be plugged back in and still work. this is a reoccuring problem in the toyota tundra. they had a recall for the 2002 model tundra for the exact same problem. that recall # was ssc-y01. i went to the dealer and the plug was totally cut off and replaced. the repair was covered under extended warrenty but with a $50 deductable that i had to pay. my service man did not know anything about the 2000 recall, but another service man indicated to me that is was a problem in previous years and gave the 2000 recall information above. i called toyota and they would not do anything. the exact wording for 2000 ssc-y01 tundra stop lamp recall said the following " the plastic bulb socket in certain rear combination lamp (includes stop lamp) may not have been molded properly in certain 2000 model year tundr's. this could cause a reduction of bulb retension force in use. in the worst case, the bulb could fall out of the socket resulting in an inoperative stop lamp." this is exactully what occurred with my stop light bulb. what they do not indicate is the worest thing could happen would someone could rear end you since the lights are not working which could be fatal. you make the call.

After the failure of the right front suspension 1 year earlier (see odi#10121403) the left front suspension collapsed as i was pulling into my driveway. results were the same as the prior failure with the wheel assembly coming off and this time jamming up into the wheel well. entire left front suspension components were replaced by same service dealer. as with prior right front failure there was no warning of impending failure.

Failure of right front suspension resulting in wheel assembly coming off of vehicle. while pulling away from a traffic light the right front wheel assembly including driveshaft, brake rotor and all attached wires and hoses came off the truck and ended up under the vehicle.

The drivers side front suspension ball joints gave way as i was driving at 75mph on interstate 40 west in texas at mile marker 14. the entire wheel, break, and axle assembly detatched at hi speed. the break line was severed. the assembly folded under the truck and i skidded on the wheel with little control until i could maneuver off of the interstate and maintain an upright position with the vehicle. the twisted tie rod kept the tire and wheel assembly from completely separating from the vehicle. the weather was light snow with a temperature of about 34 degrees. time was appx 9.50 am. the truck was repaired without comment by street toyota of amarillo, texas at a cost of appx. $ 2,200. the dealer said there was an inordinate amount of wear on the front end steering components. the truck is in good condition with a good documented service record. the truck had been steering "loosely" and i had a mechanic examine the steering the previous week. he said it looked and drove ok, but he couldn't really tell. the truck has never been involoved in an accident or insurance claim.

1.excessive break vibration during stoping. thought to at first related to tire balance. 2.front brake rotors warped from heat buildup and improper ventilation. 3.contacted local toyota service department. advised of (toyota tsb #br004-02 brake upgrade) authorizing replacement of: dust shields, front rotors, calipers,pads,rear drums,and pads. toyota refuses to repair with mileage being 41,000 as truck is not in warrenty. toyota would like to repair for $1803.25. toyota would not comment on why i was not advised of this problem before warrenty expired. as of now, have contacted toyota southeast and issue not resolved. tundra will now have to be repaired out- o-f pocket, as break failure is imminent, and safety is compromised. independent mechanic suggest replacing rotors with performace cooling disc and ceramic pads to minimize warping.

****note: regarding a 2002 toyota sequoia since this is not an option i chose tundra because this is the closest to the sequoia size. the vsc trac-off system turns on when driving on straight, dry freeway. the truck lost speed and it started moving to next lane. i lost control of the steering. i thought that i was going to crash. i took it in and i was told that the computer needs to be replaced. i am afraid to drive my truck again. i am afraid that next time that happens on the busy los angeles freeway, i could be the victim of a terrible tragedy caused by the vsc malfunction.*ak

Regarding 2002 seqouia. since seqouia not an option, chose tundra as it was closest to vehicle type. driving on freeway at speed limit, then car felt as if veering off to the left, it was hard keeping steering wheel straight and then i noticed that the trac off and vsc lights went on. it was a clear day, fairly smooth surface in the center lane, when this incident occurred. had to pull of freeway and turn off vehicle and then restart to reset the car. this is the only way the lights will turn off and the car will steer normally. this is not the first time it has happened, this has happened a several times in the past few months.*ak

While driving 60 mph the ball joints failed. it came completely from under the truck. there was no warning. there was no accidents. consumer contacted the dealer. there were no recalls. *ak

At 25000 miles the check engine light came on in my 2002 toyota tundra. took it to the dealer for service, was advised that the repair would cost $300 to fix. the problem is emissions related and attributed to a defective part ( fuel filler neck ). there is a toyota tsb out describing this problem. *ak

While driving 70 mph, the transmission stalled. the vehicle was towed. dealership repaired the problem. *ak the driver heard and felt a loud bump in the rear of the vehicle. the engine continued to run but the vehicle would not move when the consumer applied the gas pedal. there was rear end grease leaking from the right side rear showing on the wheel and tire. the mechanic stated that there was no connection between the rear brake, rear end leaking grease, the drive shaft and the failure of the transmission. the brakes were a major problem, the cruise control never kept speed or smooth, the left lower front ball joint had a catastrophic failure that caused the entire wheel, brake line and all essential components on the left side of the vehicle to come loose. the consumer requested reimbursement. *sc the brakes were a problem on the vehicle, and the drums were replaced. *jb

While driving 5 mph driver's front side collapsed. vehicle was towed to a dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that both upper and lower ball joints snapped, and needed to be replaced. *ak

Brakes are defective, the pulsation of the brakes is critical and dangerous. *bf the consumer stated that apparently there was a service alert concerning the pulsating brakes of this vehicle good up to 36000 miles. the consumer had the brakes redone at 59000 miles before he received the alert. at 83000 miles the pulsation of the brakes became dangerous again. the consumer would like to know what recourse to take in reference to the defective brakes. *tc

I was driving my 2002 extended cab 4x4 tundra 1 or 2 mph on an unpaved but graded road viewing real estate when the entire front passenger side of the vehicle collapsed jarring the truck to a stop. i thought the road had collapsed. it appears as if the front lower ball joint failed. i was only 7 miles off interstate i-95, i shudder to think of the consequences of a failure like this going 70 mph with traffic. *jb

While driving at 65 mph, the vehicle suddenly jerked. the consumer could not control the vehicle while crossing into oncoming traffic lanes and coming to a stop on the shoulder. the consumer noticed that the lower ball joint had separated and the tire (wheel assembly) had folded under the passenger side of the vehicle. *jb *sc

Icy road conditions caused a direct collision of my 2002 tundra with a tree at approximately 30 mph. the front bumper radiator and all parts in between were pushed back into the engine from this impact; however, the air bag did not deploy resulting in driver injuries.*ak

I have a 2002 toyota tundra with 39,000 miles on it. i was going 15-20 mph and aproaching a on ramp to the highway when my front drivers side ball joint snapped. i had my 4 month old son in the car with me. luckily i was able to stop without getting into a accident but wonder what would have happened if we were on the highway. toyota said i must have hit something in order for it to fail and refused to contact the nhtsa and refused to cover the expense of having it fixed. $1900.*ak

Vehicle has excessive vibration/shaking when braking, especially downhill, and most notably at speeds between 40-50 mph. repair attempts have been made at 20,341 miles and 24,312 miles replacing calipers, rotors and drums, as well as attempts at resurfacing badly warped rotors/drums. condition still exists at current mileage of 28,128 miles. fear that this is a dangerous condition that will result in loss of handling, control, traction or may lead to an accident if brakes fail to stop the vehicle. as this also does not appear to be an isolated case, this condition is likely to affect vehicle reputation and (re-sale) value as well.

In november of 2003 i was making a right hand turn when the ball joint on the driver side gave way causing the wheel to fold under the truck. in september of 2004 a similar incident occurred with the passenger side. this truck is well cared for and there were no obvious signs of a problem prior to failure. both sides have been repaired at my expense because the truck was past warranty. total damage was about $3,000.00 ea04024_cat. *ak the consumer stated the manufacturer had since issued a recall, however the consumers vehicle identification number was not included. *jb *sc

2002 toyota tundra 4x2 sr5 with under 18,000 miles, at 45 degree angle while in drive and no load, vehicle will roll backwards and will continue to roll until the brakes are applied. while rolling a loud constant clicking noise eminates from the rear end as if gears were slipping. vehicle seldomly driven and almost never pulls any loads, never abused or wrecked and maintained regularly. this has occurred since the vehicle was purchased in may of 2002. lakeside toyota informed me today 9-20-04, this was normal for the truck and that they simulated it with another truck.*ak

(1) on 8/13/04, at 10494 miles, i noticed that the violent vibration had returned. (2) concerned for my and other motorists' safety, i took it in to the kirkland toyota dealership again. (3) kirkland toyota test drove the vehicle and found the tsb on rear brake vibration, op code 472151 combo code a. the service dept. relaced both rear drums. (1) the following day, 8/14/04 i test drove the vehicle and discovered that the violent vibration during light braking had increased, now occurring on both grades and flat surfaces. (2) my next step is to contact the dealership again, but i am not encouraged that a solution will be found. *ak

Consumer stated tire pressure sticker provided wrong information. it indicated the following: 26 psi at the front tires, and 29 psi on the rear tires. at 26 psi the tire experienced tread separation, consumer already replaced two front tires. *ak

My axle is being replaced on my 2002 tundra. my local mechanic says this is a common problem. dealer will not admit or deny this. it seems that this could be a real safey issue. this was discovered during routine maintenance.

Vibration near front of 2002 toyota tundra access cab, most noticeable at 25-40mph without and with brakes applied. the vibration duration oscillates in direct proportion to the vehicle speed. and lasts from once per two seconds to twice per second. have taken to dealer (don jacobs, wi) 4 or 5 times without satisfaction. dealer has not been able to diagnose the cause, and recommended new tires to circumvent the wisconsin lemon law, which allows consumers to return a vehicle if the problem cannot be alleviated after multiple attempts to be corrected. problem less noticeable after replacement of tires, but has since gotten worse. not an engine problem, as i have shifted into neutral to vary the engine speed with no change in the symptoms. i have owned 3 other toyotas prior to this one, but i believe this will be my last unless i receive some satisfaction. i submitted the vehicle problem to toyota on a survey they sent me and have never received a reply. i guess they don't want our continued business.

While making a left turn at about 25 mph the passenger side lower ball joint separated. this caused the upper ball joint to separate and the wheel folded up under the vehicle. the c.v. shaft and inner fender were also damaged. my extended warranty company informed me that the sealed ball joint had no lubricant in it. the truck has an empty load most of the time. pe04040_cat

While driving 65 mph driver applied brakes and pedal went to the floor. this caused the driver to skid into a meridian strip barrier. driver maintained control of the vehicle, and was able to drive to the dealer for analysis. the mechanic could not resolve the problem. *ak

Manufacturer refuses to service faulty brake system while under warranty - 2002 toyota tundra 2/03-i took my 2002 toyota tundra to a dealership in scottsdale, az (right toyota) with concern over brake pulsation. the mileage on my vehicle was 32,000 miles. the dealer informed me that my truck was due for a 30,000 mile service interval and checking brakes was normal procedure. i received an invoice noting my front brakes were 90% worn & rear brakes were 40% worn. the dealership offered to replace the front pads for $400. i declined and had my brakes serviced elsewhere 1/13/04-i took my truck to a second dealership in phoenix, az (camelback toyota) for the 60,000 mile service interval. the dealer performed the service and in the process of checking the brakes noted the entire brake system should have been replaced due to two technical service bulletins (#br004-02; #br003-02) the condition of the rotors and drums were warped, with excessive wear. the dealer wanted to replace the brake system. they said that the required service should have been performed under warranty with the tsbs. the mileage limit on those tsbs was 3 years or 36,000 miles. since i was 'over' the mileage requirement, yet had originally brought my truck in for this exact problem prior to 36,000 miles toyota 'offered' to cover the parts if i paid the $1,100.00 in labor. i refused because this problem was alerted to toyota prior to 36,000 and was mis diagnosed as worn pads i called toyota's corporate services number at 800-331-4331 with all the details of this case. they have refused assistance. toyota's internal reference number for this is 200401090758. i have documentation (the 30kmile service invoice) that notes i had brake issues prior to the expiration of the tsb warranty covering the brakes. it has been provided to camelback toyota, and the factory is aware of the issue, yet they still refuse to honor their own policy for replacing a brake system that is unsafe. *cb

When brake pedal was depressed it made a squeaking noise, and front end vibrated. as a result, vehicle failed to stop immediately. this caused extended stopping distance. the dealership replaced the front brakes due to excessive brake deterioration. they also adjusted the rear brakes because they began to warp.*ak

Brakes began shaking about two months after i first bought the truck. i went on an extended road trip and at one point, when going down a grade, my brakes began to shake so violently that i thought i might lose control. i had to pull of the road and inspect my brakes! when i returned from my trip, i replaced the pads and turned the rotors. this was about 2 months ago, and i am beginning to experience the same problem. *la

Vehicle vibrates when brakes are applied at freeway speeds. i have taken the vehicle to two dealerships, six different times and problem is still there. the following has been replaced several times. rotors, calipers, bearings, rear drums and brake pads. the rotors have been replaced twice because they warped in two weeks time. last dealer told me that their tech. could not find what the problem was and that someone from toyota would have to come test drive with me. i am concerned that the vibration will become a safety issue. *jb

2002 toyota tundra 43,000 miles has a severe vibration when braking at any speed, steering wheel shakes side to side and i feel like i'm going to lose control of the vehicle. dealer (rockland toyota) acknowledges the problems and will not pay for repair since i'm past the warranty period of 36,000 miles. *jb

When driving at 20 mph both front passenger side ball joints snapped, causing front right wheel to come off. there was no shimmy or squeaking prior to the incident, only the steering felt a little stiff. the truck was not abused. pe04040_cat

My stake-bed truck's axle broke. the truck had under 12,000. it was repaired in odessa, tx and the service manager tells me the conversions on the truck are too much for the truck. that is why the axle broke. he stated that my husband and i are in serious danger of bodily injury and or death. now the brakes had to be repaired and i was again told by an employee of i-10 toyota that the truck is too heavy for the weight it's carrying. of course he said that was only his opinion.

There is a vibration in the fron drive train between 30 and 40 mph. it only occurs when the vihicle is cold and goes away after several miles of driving. i have contacted toyota and they say it is a normal condition and will not work try to fix the problem. they claim it is comming from the front differential.*ak

Toyota tundra 2001 and 2002 model years. brakes: front disc rotors and rear drums warp and are out of round. causes moderate to severe vibrations when braking. braking at highway speeds very dangerous due to severe vibrations and near loss of control.

Improper front brake caliper size, which causes warping of the front brake disc ,and subsequent serious steering wheel vibration of my 2002 toyota tundra. toyota is declining to issue an official recall of the defective brake components, and dealers have been uncooperative in fixing this problem. i hope no one has to be injured for toyota to take this seriously.*ak

My brakes have had recurring severe vibration problems almost since new. it got bad enough for the dealership to replace my rotors, drums, pads, shoes and bearings two times in the first 13700 miles, as well as turning the rotors and drums at other times. the last time we test drove the truck, it started doing it again with the toyota customer relations manager along for the ride. at that time he advised filing a complaint with toyota for arbitration. with the track record of this vehicle being what it is, i don't think the problem can be corrected to my satisfaction.*ak

At 20,000 miles, the transmission started to shift very hard and the cel came on. dealer said there was significant damage to the transmission and the error code from the obd ii stated "mis shift". it took 7 weeks to get the part.*ak

Experiencing a noticable shake in the front end when braking from 50-40 mph. this has been going on since i purchased the truck in oct 2002. i have brought the truck to the dealer numerous times. they have replaced the front and rear rotors and drums without any luck.

40 mph. driving down lookout mountain. riding the brakes. shaking so bad, i thought i might wreck. scared me and my family very much. dealer will not fix under warranty. dealer "fixed brakes" 12,000 miles ago. truck has 24,000 miles on odometer. heard from other tundra owners this is a very common problem. *jb

The vehicle was built to handle up to a 6200 lb fifth wheel unit. consumer had a 5400 lb unit on vehicle which caused it to have a rocking motion from front to rear while driving. the dealership cannot find the cause of this problem. *nlm

Cab separated from chassis. cab is attached to chassis at 4 flanges welded to frame. 2 each 10 mm bolts connect cab to each flange. a 71 mm hole exists in flange between the 2 each 13 mm holes for the 10 mm bolts. only 6 mm of flange steel exists between 13 mm holes and 71 mm hole. cab separated by tearing 10 mm bolt nuts through the 13 mm holes at the 6 mm dimension. it has been my experience in aircraft structureal repair that the minimum dimension for hole spacing is 3 hole diameters (i.e., hole spacing should have been approximately 30 mm instead of 6 mm).

Brake pedal fades to floor when sitting in stop position

The consumer is concerned at this time because when he applies the vehicle's brakes it shakes at vibrates, the rotors have been replaced every 4000 miles because they warp. the dealership is aware of the problem, the consumer can hear a buzzing noise from the engine area when in reverse and driving, the noise is more apparent when the vehicle is warn. mr *nlm *dt

I was rotating the tires and tightening the lug nuts when six broke. my torque wrench was set at 80 pounds, below the 82 recommendation. two lug nuts on the right rear on one on the right front would not tighten and just kept turning. eventually each of the lug nuts fell off, breaking the stud. the studs did not "snap" like a clean break. the lugs that broke were possibly not hardened or were made from some very soft metal. the left side produced similar results on the left rear. the left front secured all six lug nuts properly with the 80 # torque setting. on the left rear, three of the studs, all adjacent to one another broke just like the three did on the right side. i have been changing tires for 35 years and have only broken one stud previously. eighty foot pounds of torque is not very much to break off a stud. chevrolet currently sets lug nuts at 145 foot pounds of torque. i feel something is wrong with the lug studs on this vehicle, or at least the six that merely broke. thirty of the lug studs held and tightened according to procedures. however, the six that broke did so before ever causing the torque wrench to reach a mere 80 foot pounds, which was actually two pounds under the recommended setting. in looking at the steel stud where it twisted apart, the metal has the appearance of cast pot metal, not cold hard steel. so far, i have received no help from the toyota dealer. they say, "you caused them to break, it is not our fault. we change tires all day with our air impact wrenches and we are not breaking them." a "digitorque" torque wrench is much more accurate than an impact wrench. that is why i own one because i realize the importance of setting nuts and lugs at the right setting. for these reasons, i feel that some lug nut studs that may have not been hardened, etc., were installed on my vehicle since they broke off under very little pressure.

Consumer states that when applying the brakes the vehicle will have a heavy vibration and extended stopping distance. dealer notified. mr

Consumer states brake pedal feels spongy and there is extended braking distance. dealer determined the master cylinder fluid heats up and causes the brake shoes and drums to warp. front and rear shoes and drums have been replaced 3 times. dealer also replaced the rear axle and bearings, were affected by this braking problem. ts

When vehicle is fully loaded brakes will overheat when applied while going down a hill.also, automatic transmission will not go into correct gear, resulting in more excessive brake application.*ak

Consumer applied brakes at 55 mph, brakes locked up, consumer lost control of vehicle, and went into a ditch. damage to vehicle unknown at this time, no injury.*ak

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 toyota tundra. the contact stated that the front end of the frame of the vehicle was rusted and contained a hole. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. the failure mileage was 163,000.

I recently took my 2002 toyota tundra to the ralph hayes toyota dealership in anderson, sc for a repair on the power steering system. while i was there, i was notified that my truck was on recall due to corrosion of the frame. i was told that due to the recall i will be given a rental car, at no cost to me, while my truck was to have the frame inspected and repaired. i agreed to the inspection and was given a rental for the time my truck was at the shop. i received a call on 9/25/14 from the toyota dealership and was presented with 3 options. my first option was to have the new frame installed at no cost however, if any extra parts attached to the frame need to be replaced i was to go ahead and replace them. i was then presented with the price of around $9,500 that i was going to have to pay if i chose this option. my second option was to have the new frame installed at no cost and attempt to install my current parts onto the new frame. the toyota representative expressed with the current condition of those parts i will need to have them replaced with the cost still at $9,500. my third option was to decline the recall and drive the truck as is with the truck deemed unsafe to drive by the toyota dealership. the time frame i was given to make a decision was short of nothing. i had to make a decision by the end of the phone call that meant spending $9,500 or drive with an unsafe vehicle that at any given moment could cause a serious or fatal accident. i was forced into declining the recall because i do not have $9,500 in my bank account. also, after i concluded my business with the dealership, i proceeded to ask them what the trade in value on my truck was to see if buying another vehicle was an option. their response was $500 due to the recalled frame thus trading in and purchasing a new vehicle is not a viable option. would you mind reviewing my case? *tr

I was getting into my car to leave my drive way, i shifted into reverse and the whole "shifter arm' broke off. *tt

Vehicle purchased 5/2002. brakes pulsating & vibration while braking have resurfaced numerous times, had front rotors replaced and then resurfaced again after the replacement, yet the pulsating and vibrations continue to recur approx 3-6 miles after any repair work. problem seems to be rear drum and front discs not working cohesively. front discs have all the breaking burden. no failures yet or injuries because we are so worried that we brake far ahead of time to ensure we stop on time with all the vibration and shimmying going on. *jb

Vehicle has driver & passenger air bags - in front end collision at 45 mph neither air bag deployed, driver side seat belt did not lock so driver hit steering column with full impact - there was no passenger in the vehicle at the time of the accident. nlm
