2002 DODGE Intrepid

Dodge Intrepid 2.7L engine started to overheat and it was diagnosed that the water pump needed to be replaced. The old water pump that was taken out had no ‘wings’ left. While replacing the water pump the timing chain and all the tensioners were replaced, thermostat and radiator were replaced also. The engine had problem with oil pressure and oil pump was replaced. The engine has significent internal damage because of oil sludge – all oil passages are chocked by sludge. The engine has a persistent knocking noise and car is not drivable.

Engine failure due to oil sludging. Oil changes every 3000mi with documentation. All oil changes up to 111000mi done by a Dodge dealer. Most recent changes done at home. The car belongs to my sister and brother-in-law.

While exiting the interstate I heard a engine tapping, I pulled immediately into the service station at the end of the ramp before making it into the parking lot. The presure release valve, (the mechanic called it) was destroyed with enough force that the screws holding it in place dented the hood. the tempature gauge went to hot and temp light came on in the 2 minutes it took me to exit the interstate. After the “presure release valve” was replaced the mechanic then informed me that there was a hole in the block. The hole is located on the lower rigt side of the engine behind the altenator. The final discovery was that the oil was completly mixed with coolant and that the engine head was most likely cracked

while driving with cruise control on the transmission quit. Shop said that it tore the spline out.

While driving up an incline on a mountain highway, we heard a loud knocking noise, as we accelerated up a bit more. The knocking noise became more louder and then the engine started to sputter and had no power. I looked under the car and found an oil spot under the oil pan. The oil level had been slowly draining out while we were driving the car and prior to that. The engine failed secondary to lack of oil and oil pressure. There had been a oil leak that happened unexpectedly. Now we hear that there has been problems with engines from DODGE. We, and I believe many other DODGE owners, were not made aware of this problem. I believe that we should have been made aware of this situation.

While driving out of town on my honeymoon, without warning, temp. gauge maxed out. Pulled into gas station and car died on its own and would not start until it had cooled off completely. Brought it in to my mechanic, thinking my thermostat was going bad only to find out that there is a problem with my head gasket.

While driving car home from work, as my daughter was making a turn, the car lost power and the engine died. After several attempts to restart the car she had to get help to push the car out of the road. The car was towed the next morning to an area auto mechanic who diagnosed the problem as engine failure. The engine was replaced on 5/16/08 by Lebanon Wholesale Automotive in Lebanon, TN. The mechanic confirmed the diagnosis as engine failure due to sludge build-up.

When I purchased vehicle I was told I must use synthetic oil, which I did on all oil changes. Apparently they knew of an engine problem. The dealer has since relocated to another state. Oil was not getting into the engine. Several mechanics thought it might be the oil pump. Several said it was a defective 2.7 engine and I needed a new engine. Then engine seized which lead me to have to get a 5000.00 loan while I still had 2 more years of car payments!!!!

We purchased the car in September 2004 from Parks Chevrolet in Kernersville, NC. Within 3 days, I started to notice a slight squeek. We took the car in to check the noise. THey said it was brake dust. The sound got louder and within about 30 days, we changed the brakes, and again in January or Feb. and then again in May. The transmission light came on and the car would jerk into high gear. The dealership said that it was a computer problem, some adjustments were made but the car worked fine for three weeks then it started all over again. We have had to avoid several wreck sbecause of this. We have to pull to the side of the road in dangerous traffic, and re-start our car. On June 26, the car just cut off in mid-traffic, nearing causing an acident at a busy intersection. The dealership said that the oil is mixing with the engine, which they say is different than the transmission problem. We would like to join a class-action suit to force Chrysler to stop selling this junk and reimburse our money.

We purchased a 2002 dodge intrepid from Ken Garff in July of 2003. We inquired about a warranty and was told by the salesman, Ron Brown, that if anything happens just come in and we\’ll take care of it. On April 27th, 2004 as we were driving, the car started making loud rattling noise. Seconds later of the rattling noise, it started to jerk, like it was dying. There were no warning lights that came on. Fortunately, we were right in the front of the dealer we purchased it from, so we pulled into the dealer and reported the problem. They told us to drive it to the back where their service is at. We turned the car on and the engine light came on. We drove it to the back and reported to their service personnel. They told us to take it to a Chrysler dealer, which we did and found out it needs a new engine. The car dealer wanted a 2nd opinion, so they towed it to their Dodge dealer, which confirmed it needs a new or replaced engine which will cost anywhere from $5500 to $7500. I called the main office of the car dealer and they pointed finger to the manufacturer. I called the manufacturer and they pointed finger to the car dealer. Please help

We had the intake manifold replaced shortly after we bought the car in October of 2007 due to an antifreeze leak and no heat. We then noticed that we were leaking antifreeze again 4 months later. We were told that we had blown the head gaskets. We had these replaced to the tune of $800. We had to pay half because the car was under warranty. We also had to have the car towed again from a highway. Brown sludge was leaking from the car because of the oil and antifreeze leaking into each other. Had car back two days and it is leaking antifreeze again and the oil and antifreeze are leaking together to make that same beautiful brown sludge. We took the car back to the dealer and informed them that we do not want this car back, it has been a living nightmare and spends more time on the back of a towtruck then it does in our driveway. right now it is sitting in their lot while they try to determine if the car was fixed correctly.

We brought the car in for an oil change and preventative maintenance. As well as replacement of the front brakes and rotors (an issue we have dealt with since the purchase of the car)(we have records). Rotors warping and needing to be turned or repaired every 6 months) The engine had started making a noise the we did not like so we (assuming it was covered under our extended warranty) had the authorized shop with our contract look at it. They called us back after submitting a claim to replace the engine. The claim was denied due to \"poor maintenance\" We are currently challenging this and going through any process we can to have it reconsidered. We still owe a good amount on this car, it is our only vehicle. We are a family of 4 with one income and cannot pay to have this repaired. The engine replacement alone is 4500 for a refurbished unit. When my husband topped off the oil a week ago he did note sludge. This is a 2.7 liter engine that according to information on line is known for this failure. We have a lifetime oil contract and were never informed that this engine is reported to do better at the aggressive 3,000 mile change mark with Synthetic oil.

We bought our 2002 Dodge Intrepid as a rental return. At that time it had 15700 miles on it. Never had any problems with the engine, until recently when we started hearing a grumbling sound coming from the engine. It sounded like something was hitting the valve cover. We brought it in to have the service people look at it at the place where we purchased it, and they heard it too, said it was deep, and that there was nothing they could do. They suggested I take it to the Chrysler Dealership to have it looked at. That\’s when my problems really began to multiply. First they said they had to take my engine apart to see what was causing that noise. I thought, well that\’s all covered under the extended warranty that we purchased when we bought the car, thinking it would be covered should any major repairs be required. This turned out to be false. They said that my engine was not maintained properly and that it had sludge in the motor, causing the hydraulic tensioner to malfunction. Not enough pressure was going to the tensioner, causing the timing chain to slap-up against the valve cover. So we agreed to pay for the tensioner to be replaced since they told us that the warranty company would not honor our claim anyway, since they discovered SLUDGE. In other words, it was my fault this had happened. Not enough oil changes. I had changed the oil according to the owner\’s manual, but didn\’t keep good records of it, except for one, which I had done at an oil change store. Well, we finally got our car running again, after waiting two weeks to have a tensioner replaced. (Totally unacceptable time frame) We paid them $385.00 for the repair and drove out ONE BLOCK, when the check engine light came on. We Immediately turned around and notified them of this discrepancy and they said they would again look into it. Two days later, we had to call them up to find out what the matter was this time, they told me the Number One piston was at 85% compression. Now wait a second. I didn\’t have this problem before? Why is it there all of a sudden? After several attempts to have my car checked out, they said, \"Oh, it\’s not something you did.\" \"We\’ll find the problem, and fix it at no cost to you.\" OK, I felt a little better. Another week went by, and we still didn\’t have a car to drive. We called back again, since they never call us, and asked again what was taking so long. They said the engine was shot and that we needed to replace it with a rebuilt or new one. ($3400+, to $5400+) OK, where am I coming up with that much cash for a problem with my car that we didn\’t develop in the first place? This is absolutely ludicrous, to have to pay for their mistakes. We are still waiting for our car to be re-assembled as of April 11, 2005. How long will we have to suffer without a vehicle? We are still making payments on it for three more years. We cannot afford this outlandish repair of an engine, which is know to cause sludge regardless of the consumers efforts to maintain clean oil in it. This inherent design flaw which doesn\’t allow the oil to travel properly through motor\’s internal parts is the real culprit here, and we should not have to be responsible for footing the bill. Please help us get our car back the way it was when we drove it in. We are definitely not paying any more money to fix it. We just want our car back the way it was when we drove in.

Water pump blows, they replace the engine. Now the transmission goes out? Starting to wonder if I bought a lemon, considering the fact that the engine is starting to run rough now.

Was driving down the road and engine locked up with out warning. There was no engine noise or any indication that there was a problem. The car just died at a red light and now in wont even turn over at all. Tried to move engine by hand with bar & socket on harmonic balancer but would not move.

Vehicle had water pump replaced , then transmission went out , oil pump went out and said vehicle engine needs to be replaced.

Vechile stopped running in traffic. Had towed to certified mechanic. Mechanic said engine seized up and is shot. Estimate reair 3500.00+.

Valve noise since the vehicle was factory new. Dealer tells me oil is thick when engine is cold. Only getting 16 miles to gallon. Noisy performance. It is believed by myself that there is an internal problem with the valve or valve train. Possibly poor oil circulation or defective parts.

UPON TRAVELING FROM OK TO IN FOR HOLIDAY WITH FAMILY, CAR BROKE DOWN AND WAS TOWED TO NEAREST GOODYEAR AND WAS TOLD TIMING BELT WAS OU T. TOWED THE INTREPID TO IN, TOOK TO RON,S AUTO SERVICE AND WAS INFORMED ENGINE WAS GONE. IT HAD NOT RUN DRY AND NO WARNING LIGHTS HAD APPEARED AT ANY TIME.

upon driving for a few miles, the oil light comes on when at a stop, then goes off upon acceleration. the vehicle was immediately brought to my repair facility and i was told that the oil sending unit seemed to be not operating properly and it was replaced which did not solve the problem. the repair facility felt that there is something going wrong internally with the engine and would need to be replaced. i was given the number of the chrysler hotline for the 2.7 liter engine and told to file this complaint and forward this and all my other information to them for investigation.

Turned engine off. 5 Minutes later would not start. Had Car towed. Found Rear main bearing bad, timing chain and gears out. Bottom line the engin needs to be replaced.

Transmission damage resulting from internal lubrication pump failure requiring complete rebuild. I am currently experiencing oil lamp warning light at idle and am just learning of oil sludge problems with this vehicle. I fear I will experience catostrophic engine failure soon based on other consumer complaints that began with simular symptoms. This vehicle has only 87,550 miles on it and has been well maintained with oil changes every 4,000 miles. I need to get three more years out of this car or I am in for serious financial hardship. I don\’t think she\’s going to make it.

Took car in to be checked when I noticed the oil light flickering on when I came to a stop. Replaced oil sensor. 2 days later the same problem occurred. Further investigation showed the engine to be filled with sludge. Had to be completely torn apart, cleaned and repaired.

the power works but the window brace on the inside is evidently broke because the window does not go up or down right. i know of several intrepids that this has happened to. also we just found out the rotor on the wheel is oblong due to heat, they figure. were these cars made with sub-standard materials

The only warning that I had was the oil light coming on. I checked the oil and refilled it the little bit that it was low. I was driving the next day and went over a railroad track. The oil light came on again and within 10 miles the car was knocking and then the car quit running. I have been told that the engine is faulty. I have been told that the engine is problematic and unforgiving if you don’t have the oil changed exactly at every 3000 miles. I did have the oil changed regularly. The amount of a new engine to be installed is way more than I can pay for. Right now I have a very big paper weight that I can’t do anything with but keep paying for because it is not paid off yet.

The oil pressure in this 2.7 L is running 3 pounds (should be around 10). It is in need of bearings (Cam & Main) along with a new oil pump. The servicing dealer said he has seen 4 or 5 of these engines fail this year around the same mileage. He recommends a new engine, as the repair is not likely to fix the problem in the long-term.

The oil light is coming on and the dealer will not fix it. It is still under warranty and they say it is a wiring problem. I put a guage in it and when the light comes on it has 3 psi oil presure at the guage. They still refuse to fix. I have been to three dealers and they all give me the same story. Is there any way to make them honor there warranty?

The oil light flickers when I slow down, and when I am at idle at a light, the oil light comes on and only goes away when I accelerate. I am concerned that the bearings and/or oil pump need replacing before any more significant damage starts with the engine. I have called auto shops and no one gives me a straight answer on what it is. All I know is that repairs are very expensive. This is horrible, its only a 2002!

The most recent problem is with the transmission. The vehicles rpms were running high and the car was not shifting properly. Was making very loud noises with attempts to shift. The car was towed to a mechanic. I was told that not only the trans was bad but also the engine was destroyed. Was given estimate of $7500 to fix. The car will now not start and is just sitting as I still owe money on it. the water pump went our in 2006. The car suddenly had no heat and was leaking fluid. Was repaired and paid for in full by me.

The mechanical engineer diagnosed my engine w/ having engine noise down to a broken #2 connecting rod. Rod bearing spun due to lack of oil getting to bearing because of sludge and oil pick tube. Poss. water pump issue causing sludge.

The heat will not blow warm air when stopped only when I am driving. I went to buy a thermostat and the guy told me about the 2.7L arbitration info bulletin

The head gasket blew and when they took the engine apart there was oil sludge build up throughout the engine. I have kept the oil changed but I did not keep any of the records as to mileage or receipts.

The engine started ticking at idle and it sounds like the lifters. We have tried to find someone to work on the car, but have not been successful. We have been told by many repair shops (including one that specializes in rebuilding motors)that the 2.7L engines are defective and tend to seize up around 70,000 miles. They have said the motor will have to be replaced. No one wants to work on or warranty any work done on these cars. The dealerships do not want to work on the car either, but have said they discourage people from buying them because of the problems with the motors. So here we are, like so many other people who have filed complaints. We can’t trade it in, can’t find anyone to work on it, and can’t afford the repairs if we do find someone.

the engine expired while driving down the highway. We kept regular maintence as in changing the oil every 3000 miles. We feel the Chrysler Corp. should do something about these 2.7 engines.

The engine at this point and time has sludge in it and the oil is not dispursing correctly. There is also a very loud knocking noise when driving it on the freeway. I know engine is going because I had a car do this before but not for sludge.

The car was towed to a Bayside Dodge Dealership in NY with engine failure due to several overheating issues; they disassembled the engine in order to do the repairs, order the parts but came to the conclusion that the car needs a new engine. They ordered it from the Chrysler Manufacturer and here comes the problem: because I didn\’t transfer the Warranties from the first owner in 30 days, they cancelled it. Now I am completely uncovered, with no engine for the car, no way of paying for the replacement, and the dealership won\’t let me pick up the car until I pay $1500 to be reassembled. In the meantime, they took my car out and parked it in a back alley without notifying me. I am in disbelief and completely heart broken to see my car in this condition. It is very confusing for me what is happening since the car was serviced for overheating in August 2004 under the warranty. In my opinion, the engine is factory defective. The car took on water, up from the front doors,and wheel wells. The carpet would get soaked when we had water on the road ways.

The car started dropping speed while the cruise control was set, and there was a ticking noise and then a clunk and then the car died. I just bought this 2years ago for my son, he was driving home this weekend from college and this happened. Both garages I had it towed too told me that something in the engine had locked up and it would cost about $3500.00 just to have the engine repaired this is without labor cost added in. I personally can not afford this since I still owe about $6000.00 on it. This is the first Dodge I bought and will be the last.

The air worked great then a line broke and leaked out all of the freon. I got it fixed and he charge me five hundreddollars. After it was fixed a month later the compressor went out on it. I had it repaired again for sevenhundred and fifty dollars. it has’nt went out again but I am waiting.The engine failed driving down the road, motor started to sputter and spurt then i heard an engine chatter. It shut down so i tried to start it again, it failed to start.I had it towed to a garage to have it looked at, they told me that a timing chain tensioner went bad the chain loosened up and the motor was friedI called around and everyone told me its best to just replace the motor. It should be about 3600.00 to repair.

The 2002 Dodge Intrepid had been purchased in March 2006. It had been properly maintained and had a recent oil change November 6, 2006. On December 13, 2007, while driving the vehicle the engine light suddenly came on and the vehicle made aloud pinging noise. Within minutes, the vehicle stopped running. We had a repairman from the garage who did the oil change look at the engine, because it appeared to have been overfilled with oil. What actually happened was the coolant had mixed with the oil creating sludge in the engine. When I had a garage look at it for the repair, I was told that there are problems with this type of engine and it should be replaced at a cost of approximately $5,000.00. I was directed, by Jasper engines, to look into the matter. I discovered numerous other Dodge Intrepid owners, with faulty 2.7 Chrysler engine. They had experienced the same sludge mixture with the oil and coolant. I don’t believe a newer vehicle, with low mileaage, and a good maintainance record should need it’s engine replaced. I have payments on this vehicle for 4 more years and in it’s present condition, it does not have the same value unless I spend $5000.00 for a repair. I would like the Chrysler company to stand behind it’s faulty engine and make good on the repair.

The 2.7 liter engine failed. The oil indicator light was for the last few thousand miles before failure. From what I have read, all signs point to an oil sludge issue.

Regular maintenance has been performed on this vechicle since I purchased it in May, 2003. The engine has failed and several mechanics have told me that it would cost approximately $5000 to fix. I am still paying on this vehicle.

On September 7, my wife and I, along with our two daughters (ages 4, and 4 weeks,) were driving on a major interstate (I-94) in Northwest Indiana. I heard a noise in the engine of our 2002 Dodge Intrepid, (featuring the notorious 2.7L engine,) and immediately noticed that the accelerator was completely unresponsive. Luckily, we were able to coast over to the right shoulder. We had to wait 20 minutes in a perilous situation for a family member to arrive at the location. We then had to maneuver an extremely dangerous transfer of car seats and our two daughters to the functional vehicle while constant, speeding traffic was passing very close to us. On June 21, 2005, the engine on my 2002, Dodge Intrepid 2.7L SE, expired with no warning. My local mechanic looked at the engine as the vehicle was over the 36,000 mile warantee period. He stated there was serious \"sludge\" in the engine and that I would need to replace the engine or sell the vehicle at a loss. The Dodge Dealer I bought the vehicle from stated the same thing… at a cost of $6500! I have maintained this vehicle immaculately, and only used premium oil (Mobile 1 Synthetic) and filters (Fram or Mobil). I was told that I had neglected to change the oil by the Dodge Dealer (NOT the local mechanic who obviously noted the premium filter). In any case, there was no warning and the vehicle was recently paid in full…. now it sits in my driveway as I use my 1996 Ford Escort with 200,000 miles on it… with no problem!

On December 11 2004 my Dodge Intrepid stop on the highway. After speaking to my mechanic I found out it is the sludge build up with in the engine. I change my oil regularly and keep up with proper tune up and maintenance on the vehicle that is a 2002, only 48,000 miles and now my engine is gone and I could have loss my life on the road. On August 2, 2007 my car overheated while taking my daughter to volleyball practice. When the dealership finally got to my car on August 6 to find out what the problem was they said the water pump, thermostat and thermostat housing had gone bad. I had some service items needing to be taken care of so I authorized them to be done. I checked on the progress at the end of the week and was told that it had an oil sludge problem and the tensioner chain needed replacing. On the morning of August 14 they said it was ready but were now having a problem with the drivers window operating properly. They fixed this and said the car was ready for pick up. I barely made it home. It had to be towed back to the dealership the next morning, August 15. On August 17 they still could not tell me what the problem was. On August 20 the service rep called and said it needed the engine replace and the cost would be $8500 and the company would not cover it under warranty because the cost was over $6000 and because of the oil sludge issue. I have had the oil changed regularly but cannot produce all of the receipts to prove it. I am still paying on the vehicle and cannot even drive it. Because of the cost of repairs I cannot get it fixed. After doing some research the oil sludge problems seems to be widespread with the particular vehicle and has been for many years. I would like to just get another car but cannot afford the have the payoff of added to financing.

Oil light is on. Oil does not circulate properly. The repair shop cannot fix the problem.

The consumer should not have to pay for a faulty design.

My wife was driving home from work yesterday and she started hearing a ticking noise coming from the engine. The car has not died yet, but according to my mechanic, I shouldn’t even move it. The repair estimate is about $1,500. I tried contacting Chrysler LLC for assistance. They informed me that there are no “Incomplete Recalls” on this vehicle. The Chrysler rep proceeded to tell inform me that she will file my complaint for internal review. My understanding is that they are waiting for enough complaints to issue a recall. How many is enough?

My mechanic said typical for this 2.7 motor, sludge buildup premature engine failer. estamated repair $7,000 I have let this car sit for a year hoping to get ta a point a could afford to fix it , The car is in perfect condition other than this premature engine failer

My engine started making a loud clicking noise,and the steering wheel locked up and the car stopped. Without any warning the vehicle engine failed.

My engine has been “ticking” for probably 40,000 miles or longer. For a year and half, everytime I have work done on the car or have the oil changed, the mechanics tell me to “get rid of this car”. It’s paid for, I can’t afford payments or repairs. Everyday I ride on a prayer. My “check engine” light has been on since around 50,000 miles and I now have 121,639. After reading other comments, I guess I have been blessed to ride this long.

My Dodge Intrepid 2.7 engine blew, I change my oil regularly by a friend that works at an oil places. Started making a knocking nosie, the check engine did not come on it I parkd the car.

MOTOR SLUDGED – I was told to produce all oil changes for life of the car. I did so! But then Dodge told me that slug in the Intrepid motor are to common and that Dodge can\’t afford to stand behind their motors. I tried to receive help through CMA Ext. Mechanic said the engine has a sludge build up problem that caused the timing chain to break. I still owe over $5,000 dollars on this car. It has around 70,000 miles on it. That is not suppose to happen to a five year old car.

May 2006 – car would not go over 2500 rpm with out lurching. We took it to a mechanic and they fixed the problem with the cam shaft sensor for 210.00. October 2006 – I was driving north bound on I – 75 near skiatook, OK when the engine started pinging. We slowed down and at that point it got much worse and became a loud knocking. We turned the car off and at that point it blew out all the antifreeze. We had the car towed to the same mechanic that fixed the cam shaft sensor and he has told us that the engine is shot and needs to be replaced for 4500.00 at 73500 miles. The oil light flickered at low engine idle for around 6 months prior to this. We replaced the oil with heavier wieght and that problem stopped.September 2005 – The window control on the driver side went out. Have not had it looked at by a mechanic.

Low oil pressure at idle. Oil light comes on and lifters make a noise at an idle of 900 rpm\’sLow oil pressure is low due to sludge problem, that is very common in these motors. I replace the motor with a Jasper remanufactured engine. The car has 60000 miles. The Mechanic check the oil pan and valve covers and found alot of sludge. The oil was changed according to schedule as per Chrysler Manual. It was a fleet car from my company. I opted to buy it because of the great ride and maintenance record.

Looks like I am the next in a long line of complaints on the 2002 intrepid 2.7 L engine. We have purchased an extended warranty on this car when we bought it back in 2002 from enterprise rent a car. We were to have coverage for 5 yrs 75,000 miles. I have maintained this car myself with my family’s help. Well last week my engine light came on and then the car died. I got off the road and my local garage which was just 1 block away said it was something internal with the engine. He of course doesn’t take the warranties because of the refusal to pay for work. So I had it towed with my road side assistance to the local dealer. They diagnosed it and said the time went due to (you can guess right) SLUDGE. I have no proof that I have done the oil changes only my word and of course that is not good enough. So the warranty adjuster came out and took oil samples to the lab to see how old the oil is. I am presently waiting on this. The garage told me that if they don’t cover it that it will cost me 8,480.00 to repair it. The local guy can do it for about 4,000. Well I just don’t have that kind of money to spend. I still owe 6320.44 on the damn thing and am not at all happy. Then I find out that this engine is notorious for blowing out. I have already called and opened a claim with daimler and am awaiting to here from the dealer tomorrow. If I can not get this car fixed I am literally screwed. If I do not have a car I can not work and I can not pay the remainder of my loan. I am in dire need of assistance in this matter. I am going to fight daimler for everything and if this thing goes to court I really want to be involved because I am tired of being stepped on by them.

Leaking cooling system, Removal and replacement of the thermostat, car shop recommended water pump and timing chain, estimated $1500 cost of repair, unable to do so due to finances.

Latest problem is engine just died on freeway. Was told engine has seized up and needs to be replaced.

Keep getting a check engine lite. The code says o2 sensor on no. 1 bank front sensor. Intereior lights go bright to dim.Took auto in for repair and found out the oil pressure is only at 5psi. So you tell me how long this engine is going to last at that reading? The mechnic told me that Dodge had this problem since they come out with the 2.7 motor. Our neighbor had the same problem with there car also.

In November, housing to radiator went out, had repaired, cost 289.46. In April the radiator had to be replaced, it cost $138.00, and now in May the engine went out, and the water pump.

I was traveling on an interstate and my car went from normal temperature to over heated in seconds. Then a loud clunking sound. Then nothing. I had my oil changed regularly. I have very low mileage (2002 – 66,521)and took care of my car. I am out of town (200 miles from home)and I have no other transportation, and no money to complete the repairs needed. I was riding with my daughter (she was driving the car) in the Dodge Intrepid when the thermostat suddenly began rising. There was no warning at all. We thought that it was a mistake in the thermostat. I said I would have someone check it, never thinking that at about 74,000 miles or so, and almost four years, the car would have engine problems.Then my daughter remineded me about her Chrysler Sebring (she now has a Mitsubishi) that stopped on her all of a sudden at night at an intersection with no warning lights or gauges or anything to indicate there was a problem. Which later was found to be engine sludge in her 2.7 liter engine. The same engine that is in my Intrepid. My car began to smoke and we had to stop the car on a very narrow street that had no pull over lane. My daughter opened the hood to cool the engine. We needed to move the car because the street was not safe to be stalled on. My daughter could have been hit by a passing car, or the car could have been hit. While we waited, we called a close garage because it was almost 5:00pm we did not want it to close before we could get there for the car to be checked. After the engine cooled enough, we crept to the garage, stopping to let the engine cool. It was hard to believe. All that day the car was fine and suddenly my daughter and I are creeping to get this car that I have had for almost four years and having engine problems to a garage. The owner of the garage looked at the car but could not touch it until it cooled down. To do this they placed coolant in the engine and it bubbled out. It took almost 30 minutes for the car to cool enough to look at it. The owner said that the engine was about to go and that I should trade it as soon as possible or see if the car company I purchased it from will trade it. He said whatever the car dealership did, short of another engine, it would happen again. He also said that he did not build it and it would be better for them to access that. Kernersville Chrysler Dodge refuses any responsibility. They will not trade it nor did they offer to fix the engine. I have had open heart surgery this year, and I do not need this aggravation. I have a problem making insurance and monthly payments on a car that sits in my driveway and cannot be used. Jacquelyne B. Barber

I was just informed that the 2.7 liter engine in my 2002 Dodge Intrepid contains sludge and that it will fail within 10000 miles. The dealer claims that improper servicing is the fault. The car has been serviced properly, per manufacturer\’s instructions. The replacement cost is five or six thousand dollars. Many many people have experienced the same problem with this engine.

I was driving in a rural area and when I attempted to go up a hill, the engine light came on and the car started to stall out. I was able to make it up the hill, but as soon I was over the crest the temperature gauge shot all the way up and smoke began to billow from underneath the hood. I was able to find a safe place to pull it off the road (Thanks be to God!), but after I turned the engine off, it would not turn back on. I had it towed to a local repair shop who advised me that coolant had mixed with oil in my engine to form a sludge like substnace — probably because of a faulty water pump. He told me that there is no way to rebuild the engine in a situation like this and that I will have to buy a new one. The cost is going to be over $6000, but the repair shop manager assured me that this problem is not out of the ordinary for this make/model and that I should file a complaint.

I was driving home on Mon 10/22, my car began to die repeatedly, on the last time it died, it made an awful noise. The person at the repair shop said the oil was all gummed up. I had just recently had my oil changed, and did so regularly. As a result of this problem my engine had failed and needs to be replaced. I felt this was very strange for a car with only 60,000 miles on it to have engine failure, so I did some research on the internet and I found that many of these cars were having this same problem. I was driving along and the oil light came on after I changed the oil 2 weeks prior. Checked oil and it was level. Light stayed on and off for several days but on mostly. One day it started making loud banging noises just after I started up. It then started to overheat quickly. I called some shops and they told this motor was notorious for having problems. So I took it to one and they said the motor was bad. Ironically they had another intrepid in the shop for the same thing! I had to replace the motor which cost over $5400.

I took my car to a dodge dealership because my engine light came on a couple of days ago. My oil light constantly goes on and off while driving. They are trying to tell me that the warranty will not cover this. I get oil changes. They are telling me that it is due to the buildup which I don\’t understand why I am being punished for that. I came to them soon as the engine light came on before it caused more damage.

I started having problems with the transmission in December 2004, I had internal sensors replaced for $950.00, and in April 2005 I brought a used transmission for 675.00, and had it installed for 400.00, and in May 2005, I had to have the rear end seal replaced for 350.00. THe automatic trunk lock does not work. I brought the car in April 2002 and had it for two years before the troubles begin. I am still recovering financially from the loss, and I have 3 kids and a wife. Two are in daycare. Do the math. I am very much interested in the lawsuit against Daimler Chrysler. To add fuel to the fire, I still owe about $10,000 on the car.

I have had a problem with the oil light in my car. After receiving oil changes the light remained on. I also recently have had problems with my car running hot. The sealant that holds the top of the pressure valve together(the part going from the coolant tank to the engine)gave way and the top popped off causing coolant to spew all over under the hood of the vehicle. I had this part repaired. About a week later my car ran hot again. I again took it to a mechanic to have him look at the car. he stated that water was beginning to mix with oil. He stated that I needed a new engine because the head gasket and possibly the block had been cracked.

I had Just bought the car from O’hara Chrysler Pylmouth Dodge Dealeship on Feb21 2006. After making three payments my motor started to make a bad noise. I took it to my car repair man and he stated that a rod was going bad and this was caused by sludge build in the engine. In the three monthes that I have own the Car. I have had the oil changed once at a valvoline instant oil change shop.

I bought this car in Oct. of 2002 with 11k miles on it. I brought it back to the dealership 3 different times for a transmission fluid leak within a 6 month period. Where the last time this happened, all of the fluid was in my driveway! This was after it was fixed twice before! The rear passanger window stopped working around the beginning of 2004 (I never had that fixed). The front driver side window fell off the track around the beginning of 2007. That cost around $200I had another problem with my transmission in August of 2007, this time it was not shifting out of 2nd gear. I had that fixed for around $400.Now, I just picked up my car from the autobody shop. I drove it maybe 15 minutes to pick up my son and his friends, and it made an terrible sound,the low engine pressure light came on and just died in the middle of a busy intersection! Im lucky we are all still alive!!!!

I bought the car on April 1st, 2005. It had 72,781 miles on it. Being a single mother of 2, I needed a reliable car that would last me for years. I paid for the car in full, using all of my savings. About a week later, my mechanic found a pressure seal leak. He fixed it and did a tune up which included an oil change. Three months later, 6,415 miles and 2 oil changes, my air bag light came on and my oil light began flickering. I called my mechanic and scheduled an appointment. The next morning when I started it, it sounded like a deisel truck. I towed it to the shop and later found out that the rod bearings had blown due to low oil pressure. I checked the oil every time I stopped for gas and changed the oil every 3,000. This car had to last me! Now, after spending every last penny I had slaved for, I need a new engine. It will cost me $4,421. To make things worse, even if I replace the engine, ultimately I will have to replace the new one a few thousand miles later. I now am behind on my bills and facing eviction- and I still don’t have a car to get to work and may lose my job. The fact that Chrystler won’t take responsibility for their faulty engine design disgusts me. They are taking advantage of consumers and robbing us of what little we do have- even putting some of us closer to homelessness.

I am an owner of a 2000 Dodge Intrepid that quit while I was driving it to the shop to get it repaired!!! My car had about 93,000 (mostly highway) miles on it. Two years ago immediately following an oil change my car started ticking I ttok it to the Dodge Service Station and they said the timing tensioner needed to be replaced (73,000 miles). 2 weeks ago it started ticking so I took it to a local shop (not the Dodge Service Station). They fixed the car and after it sat in their heated garage over night it stopped ticking. I drove it for 3 1/2 days and it started ticking again. I called the Dodge Service Station and they said that part I had earlier replaced was not under warrenty any more so I took it to the shop who had worked on it the previous week. They ordered another timing tensionier that day and while driving it up to the Auto shop it get it fixed the engine seized up on me. My oil light NEVER once came on until I lost power. They said there is “sludge” build up and that there was so much slack in the timing chain that it tore up the inside of my motor and now have metal throughout it and need a new one. First the air conditioner just stopped working in June 2007. On July 22, 2007, I drove the car to my cousin\’s house, and when I prepared to leave, the car would not start. Auto repair shop towed the car to the shop and told me that it is the timer belt and later told me that the engine needs to be replaced. Then they called and told me that an adjuster from my warranty company (I purchased a three year top of the line warranty when I purchased the car from a Used Car lot in 2005) had come and took pictures and wants to deny the claim because of the sludge in the oil, and asked me if I had the oil changed, maintenance, etc and if so, I need my receipts.I have had oil changes and do have receipts, but I feel that the warranty company knew all about these cars with the oil sludge problems and so did the dealer when he sold me the car. I had paid, durng the first year to have this sludge cleaned out, and was told that it was clean and would be okay now. My mother reported this to the Dealer, and all he said was that\’s why we have a warranty. I had to pay ot of my pocket to have this work done. I had never heard of other complaints about these problems until now. The engine cost $3,100 to replace. I don\’t have that kind of money, neither do I earn that kind of money. I badly need my car becausee I work in another city – quite a distance from my home, and I have to drive to get to my job.PLEASE HELP ME. First problem was the pressure valve failed. Then a few months later the idle was always jumping up and down. With 20 miles left on the warrenty I decided to take it in. The told me I had a bad water pump. The replaced it. They also recommended that I replace the timing chain. I declined because of money issues. Now, two months later I find out that the 2.7 engine may have a defect.

First of all the 2002 gets 28 mpg I don’t understand why, our 1999 got 30 mpg all the time and the 2003 gets between 28-30 .If the 2002 would have been my first Dodge it would have been my last however I have been driving Dodges all my live. Both cars the mirror knob on the inside that controls the mirror came off shortly after purchesing the car seems like they are build a lot cheaper. The transmission in the 2002 is making a winnie noise too. NOT A GOOD CAR!!!

Ever since I\’ve had this car, I\’ve had to constantly get fuel injection cleanings and oil changes. The car would stop at any time and need a fuel injection cleaning. I was told to get oil changes ever three months because oil sludge would build up in the engine. I had all kinds of oil problem repairs. Since 2002, I\’ve spent over $3000 in repairs on this car. In February 2005, I got an oil change, tune up and fuel injection cleaning. Within the same month, I started to hear noises coming from the engine. It sounded as though something was rattling within the engine. I thought, maybe there wasn\’t enough oil, so I put oil. While driving, the car turned off. I had to steer over to the side of the road. I had the car towed to the stop where I was told that the engine was gone. I checked several places within the city of Montgomery, cities around Montgomery, and even Florida. Every place contacted had the same response that the engine for the Dodge Intrepids is no good. The cost for a used engine is $3200 and a new engine is around $7500. One business in Florida told me that in one month, he sold 91 engines for the Intrepid. I was also told that Chrysler were not discussing their engines at all. I was instructed not to buy an engine because same thing would happen again. When I told them the number of miles I had on the car, I was told that I came out good. Most people are only getting 40,000. This is not fair, I am paying for a car that I can\’t drive without paying over $4000.

Even though we changed the oil ourself as required the engine was full of sludge and as our 17 year old daughter was driving the car the engine blew without warning. We were told the only way to repair the car was to put in a new engine. We could not afford the $6500 repair so the car was repossed by the loan company. They will sell the car for junk and we will be stuck with the balance.

Engine spun bearing on crank shaft due to improper oil flow. Engine stopped working stranding me on the side of the road. No warning at all. No light. Had vehicle towed to NTB in Cumming, Georgia to begin excessive and costly repair.

Engine problem light has been coming on and the engine would surge intermittently during the spring and summer 2007. We had it checked at the dealership (Kinchloe Motors, Parkersburg, WVA) in August 2007 when they fixed the window. This was the second repair of the drivers window for malfunction. The dealership said they could find no problem with the engine. Intermittent light and surging continued we had the car back to the dealer in October. They still could find no problem. There was no mention by them at either visit that there was a recall on the intrepid engines. On December 22 the engine stopped on a highway 100 miles and 2 hour from home.

Engine locked up while under normal driving conditions stranding my wife, one year old son and I on the side of the road in the Texas heat. Towing expenses incurred so far are $125.00 plus I will incur the cost of replacing the engine.

The 2002 Dodge Intrepid is still currently at a repair shop, waiting to undergo repair, as i cant afford paying for the repair. I hope to end this matter quickly. All I want is compensation for the damage to get the car fixed and back on the road.

Engine began to start a loud bang then seized up. Was discharded from military on my way back home from Virgina to Wisconsin. This caused me to delay my school because of the cost and no transporting.

ENGINE – Rattling noise in the engine. Blown piston/cylinder.Wheel- vibration whenever the car was in motion. Front left wheel.

Engine – car has always been maintained according to manual. Oil light came on and the car started getting hot. It was drivn about 2 miles from the spot where the light came on to the nearest car repair place and they said the engine had already blown. It cost $5581.69 to have a new Chrysler engine put in.Transmission – back in September of 2004, the valve or solenoid body in the transmission stuck and had to be replaced. I took it to the dealer and had to pay 860.19 to get it repaired. This was at 52379 miles. Then in May of 2006, the transmission went out again and it cost me $3092.51 to repair it. AAMCO said the valve body was shot again along with most of the rest of the transmission.Brakes – in December of 2005, I took it in with brake noise even though we had changed the pads around 60000 miles. Just Brakes said that all of the rotors were warped because the hardware that holds the pads and moves them against the rotors was defective and the rotors were warped beyond use and I had to buy all new rotors for $313.14

Driving down the highway, the engine starting sputtering and then the temperature gauge pegged high. The water pump had failed and dumped all of the coolent into the oil (what the mechanic told me). I also now have the oil light coming on when idling. The “sludge” in the engine is choking off the oil lines, to the point that the system is seeing only 6 or 7 pounds of pressure at idle, but goes back up once the car is running and the oil pumps rpms go higher. I am just waiting for the engine to seize up and stall when I am driving it.

complained numerous times to dodge dealer that the brake pedal sticks and has to manually unstuck with my left foot so that the car moves when I press on the accelerator with right foot. last year the master cylindar was changed. now this year they said that the master cylinder and right and left calipers has to be changed and the seals have swelled. said that brake system was contaminated with wrong fluid. this dealership is the only one that has worked on my car.

Chrysler 2.7 L Engine Lawsuit JG Diagnose – Cooling System Overheating: Technician inspected cooling system and topped off coolant. Tested thermostat and cooling fan operation. Recheck work performed last week (replace water pump). Found no leaks from cooling system, but engine builds up significant pressure quickly and vehicle overheats. Technician replaced thermostat with no change, performed additional testing and trace concern to either faulty head gasket or cracked cylinder head. Technician also noted oil pressure light comes on idle when warm. Recommend replacement of engine with Jasper remanufactured engine. Advise customer of Chrysler arbitration concerning engine failure concerns and advised to contact hotline.

Car is undrivable. It broke down on the side of the road and I had to have it towed. It was towed to Lee’s Auto Repair where I was informed that I needed a new engine. The car has a 2.7 ltr engine.

Bought the car two months ago. Everything looked and ran fine. Started making noise yesterday and took to Precision Tune in Colombia, SC. Was informed that the engine had failed and needed to be replaced. Will cost around $4,600 when repair is completed next week. After seeing all of the negative comments about the 2.7 litre engine in these cars, I can now see why it failed at such low mileage, even though the car looks to be great shape and well maintained.

Bought my 2002 Dodge Intrepid used in December 2002 with approximately 35,000 miles on it. Recently my oil light came on and car was making a knocking noise even though the dipstick showed there was plenty of oil in the engine. I took it to my mechanic and he told me that he had personally changed five or six engines from the same vehicle type because of sludge build up and knew of many others from other mechanics. I now have a car that I owe several thousand dollars on and can’t use or in good consience sell to anyone else. This engine has only 71000 miles on it! Do I have no options because I bought the car used without knowing that the engine had an endemic design defect that caused it’s failure? I specifically bought an American car because I believed that it is important. I will never do so again.

Bought 2002 Dodge Intrepid 2003 with 11,000 miles. I presently have 43,000 miles on my car that I can’t drive. I owe $7112 on my car. Engine light on.In March 2006 I started having engine problems. I had two certified mechanics look at it and they both said that the 2.7L V6 engine has been a problem for a lot of people. They won’t touch it. Estimated cost to fix is $3000 plus labor. At first the engine light came on and said that the O2 sensor had gone bad and that there was a multiple cylinder misfire. Got the engine checked and was told to replace the spark plugs and spark plug coils, which I did. That still did not make the problem go away. I got it checked again and they told me that they weren’t able to tell what the problem was unless they checked the inside of the engine. They told me that the engine had oil sludge build-up and would eventually lead to complete failure of the engine. So I replaced the engine because the internals were done for it. I constantly changed my oil every 3,000 miles and this is what I get for it.

Air conditioning- Evaporator problem, to repair this $200 part the dashboard has to be dismantled which means extensive labor cost. living in florida is no picnic with no AC.Engine- Engine blew/ timing chain belt broke while on the I-75 highway. From what I understand this a common problem with this model, it is dangerous and should be recalled. I Maintain and do everything I should with the vehicle. After reading about the engine oil sludge problems on the Intrepids I found I am in the same boat. My engine failed today, and the repair shop found very dark oil with ‘chunks’ of things coming out. Now, I may not get my oil changed every 3,000 miles, but it certainly hasn’t been more than 6 months or so since the last oil change. Certainly not enough for a broken rod in a three year old engine. I called my Dodge dealer and I can now say after reading about this that he new exactly what this was about. He was very unhelpful, basically saying they had to take the engine apart, said up front that they would want oil change receipts and intimated that I was guilty of negligence unless they found otherwise. I don’t know what the bill is going to be, but I am sure it will be major. I will be contacting my insurance company on Monday to see what other options I have. I do have gap insurance for leasee’s so I may have some, but this is still unnacceptable. I owned a Dodge Ram and this car until now quite happy. But I will not own another.

After owning the car approximately one month, on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007 car vented steam from the engine after short 14 mile trip in rural residential area. MPH did not exceed 50 mph. Referred to owners manual which indicated this was normal occurrence, but did check coolant level and added Prestone 50/50. Drove car on Sunday 9/16/07 40 miles and temperature gauge ranged between middle level and notch below H. Car taken to two mechanics. Second mechanic on 9/20/07 said car had coolant in the engine. Recommended rebuilt replacement engine.Our mechanic, Mark Hanlon at Donnie Braun and Sons Auto Repair diagnosed our problem as a failed water pump which caused the coolant to mix with the oil in our engine. He recommended a complete engine replacement with a rebuilt motor based on the fact that these motors are notoriously bad. The estimate to replace the motor with a rebuilt motor is $6,105.15. Mark provided to us information from Jasper Engines & Transmissions which indicates the following problems with the 2.7 V6 motors: (1) oil starvation due to a restricted oil flow; (2) bearing failure due to tri-metal bearings rather than aluminum; (3) water pump failure due to the timing chain tensioner applying more tension than needed; and (4) improperly sealed gasket which allows coolant to enter the oil cavities. Apparently, all these problems are corrected in the rebuilt motors.

After having body work repaired following an accident, I picked up my 2002 Dodge Intrepid and after less than 5 miles of driving, the oil light came on only seconds before the vehicle lost power and would not start. After having the problem diagnosed, I was told that the engine had seized up due to an oil pump failure likely caused by an extreme amount of sludge. The mechanic noticed that I had a recent oil change sticker in the window of my vehicle and was well within the window of my next scheduled oil change. They are currently researching the cost of replacing the engine. After an internet search for similar problems I was astonished at the number of complaints of this kind listed on this and other websites. 2.7L V6 engine needs to be replaced due engine failure caused by oil sludge. Bought car at 28719 miles in June 2005 at a Toyota dealership along with the Toyota extended care warranty plan. On March 25, 2005, I was driving to work and the car stopped without any warning, at first the car wouldn\’t restart. So we pushed it on the side of the road. After about an hour, the car started, but seemed to still be running really rough. I took the car to get an oil change. The mechanic came to me and showed me the oil that came out from my engine stating I had water in my oil. So, immediately, I drive to the Toyota Dealership\’s Service Center. At first they couldn\’t find any problems, then I was told it was the water pump. Then a week later they stated I have engine problems. I questioned whether the repairs were going to be covered by the extended warranty and was told yes by both the Toyato Service Manager and the Manager on duty at Toyota Care Extended Warranty. At that time, I requested authorization to pick up a rental car and was given the authority and told the warranty only covers five (5) days. Two weeks later, I called the Toyato Service Manager questioning what exactly was wrong with my car and what the hold up was as I\’m still driving the rental and responsible for payment after five days, and it over three weeks later. He told me he wasn\’t sure as he was unable to get a hold of his contact at the Dodge Dealership. I decided to call the Dodge Dealership myself and found out my engine needs to be replaced due to oil smudge. That the hold up has been they cannot locate an engine for my car as Chrysler no longer makes the engine, and they were deciding how they could resolve this issue. I questioned the Toyota Care exended warranty customer service representation who was responsible for payment and was told that the warranty was covering the repairs. One month and one week later, I receive a phone call from Toyota\’s Service Manager stating that the representative from the warranty company just left the dealership and denied my car claim. As far as I know, my car sits in the Dodge Dealership with it\’s engine in pieces. The Dodge Service Manager stated he contact Crysler to see if the manufacturers warranty would cover repairs and stated no. I have four reciepts proving I had oil changes done within the 5000 mile limits. I only drove this car for 8 months, still have to pay over 800.00 in car payment, insurance, and extended warranty. Of course, the toper of this would be that I am now also responsible for the rental for the entire time cause my claim was denied.

I was driving home on the highway and almost lost my life being almost hit by a Rig passing on the highway all because my cars engine seuiz up. I was never notified of any problems with the 2.7L engine and to read these lawsuits and know that I was not the only one who suffered the exact same problems. Please let us do not let them get away with this it is costly to the consumer and dangerous to the public knowing that this vechile could stop at any time and cause serious injury to me and other drivers on the higway.

This engine is the Chrysler 2.7L which has had problems with sludging. The engine needs to be replaced. I need to know the amount I would receive based on the problems noted with this engine.

The cd player stopped working, the seatbelts in the back do not lock in place, so they are not useable. The engine has a loud ticking noise, replaced the tensioner pulley and still has the noise and engine sludge build up. Did numerous oil changes and the sludge still builds up, and the engine still ticks. Sounds like a diesel engine.

Following spring, motor failed during a trip while passing a truck on a 2 lane road in WV (legal passing on long straight). Barely got by the truck and immediately lost power causing truck to nearly collide from the rear. Couldn’t get off the road (no shoulder or pulloff areas) till coasted off into a pulloff area 1/2 mile further down the road.

I was 30 miles from my home when something began "ticking". When we parked to check under the hood, it never cranked up again. We had to have the car towed back to my hometown and to a repair shop. After checking I was told that the whole motor was "gunked up and ruined".
After checking on getting my car fixed and no one seemed to want to tackle the job, I actually just bought another car. After a time I gave the car to my son and I paid to have it repaired. He located a man in Lebonnon Tennessee who had done this to other Dodege Intrepids before. We had to have the car carried up there on a car carrier, which cost another $1300., but a new motor was put in and he is now driving it. The cost of the motor, towing and my having to rent a car until I could get another one not only cost me time, misery but about $4,000.00 total. I am very unhappy with Dodge and think some reimbursment is in order.

I had the engine taken apart before they told me the timing chain tensioner broke, then i was told that with the mileage it would be easier to replace the engine with a new one. I found out that The 2.7L in the car was one of the defective ones that Chrysler sent outwith the 2002 Intrepid. I would like the manufacturer to pay for the replacement for the defective engine.

I drove a 2002 2.7 Dodge Intrepid. One day I was driving down I-5, (the main highway) and my car started to over heat right away to the red and was blowing cold air. I was by myself and pulled over as far as I could but my car was still in the lane. I waited a little while til my car cooled down, about 1 hour. I tried to drive it to the gas station to use a phone to call my dad. I finally got a hold of someone to come tow me home. The next day my dad had fixed the thermostat thinking this would help. um….. NO! My car started to blow cold air again. I was driving then all of a sudden my car just stopped on the freeway. I was not even able to pull over AT ALL!!! My car just started to slow down and I couldnt even turn my wheel. I had to call the police department and let them know that I was in the freeway and was scared to cause an accident. They came and blocked the road and pushed me to the side of the freeway. This is the worst experience that has EVER happened to me in my life!!!!! My dad looked at the car and checked the oil and all he could see was sludge everywhere. I am still making payments on my car and I still have it in my yard. This is a waste of money and do not feel that this is something I should be paying for. Its just been sitting there and after reading all these complaints I cannot believe that Dodge is still selling these cars and putting peoples lives in danger daily! I looked online for ways to stop people from buying these cars and found this site. I really hope something happens with these cars. At least STOP SELLING THEM!!! Engine failed suddenly after repeated attempts to fix an oil leak problem, having replaced the front oil seal, and we were told at first it was only pulleys, and upon further inspection , the driveshaft was wobbly, and we were told the engine needed to be replacedat a cost of $4500. the car has been sitting at the dealer since then(3 months ago), and we cannot afford to fix it and dont know if it is even worth it.

air conditioning/heat- the heat failed in the winter of 2010 engine cooling (radiator, water pump)- the radiatior failed in the winter of 2010. and was causing the heat failure. The radiatior was replaced. power options (window/door/seat/roof)- the windows electic in the back seats have failed, when looked at we were told we would need to replace the motor in both back windows, they have been left un repaired.

According to the mechanic water has got into the oil which in turn blew up the motor.

I purchased a 2002 dodge intrepid brand new, this is my second daimlerchrysler vehicle that has not held up well that i consider a lemon. at 26 miles, the abs light came on for a few seconds, then turned off, there was almost no braking power. i had to quickly downshift into low gear to slow down the car. this has happend several times. at first i thought it may have been things breaking in. dodge dealers just deleted the "internal cab failure fault code" and did nothing to try and fix this. later the steering began squeaking during low speed manuvers. then i experienced play in the steering wheel. at 2000 miles the vehicle would wander and would almost never drive straight. after 2 dealership alignments and 1 independent, the steering wheel is still off center. 3 different oem tires rotated to front completely worn on outer edges, abnormal tire wear and feathering. suspension squeaks loudly at times. at about 500 miles the transmission would sometimes slam into 3rd gear, shift rough in lower gears, bump, hesitate, stumble. dodge dealership always "could not duplicate" the problem. i almost crashed when driving and front wheel hit moderate puddle when vehicle was thrown into another lane. i was told by the service manager "those things happen". i have written and spoke to daimlerchrysler reps many times, they deny there is any problem. at about 13,000 miles the engine would clank when starting sometimes (sounds like not firing up properly). i have never had these problems with any other vehicle, even front wheel drive and do not see how they can get away with this. there are many others experiencing similar premature problems that should not be occuring as such. i have started a website against daimlerchrysler [xxx] - email address is [xxx] - address: [xxx]san leandro, ca [xxx]. *ak parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

An oil plug front left of engine block blew out pumping oil onto catalytic converter. open flames melted wheel well, back bumper, and fuel hoses off of gas tank. fire went out went all the oil was pumped out of engine and car stopped moving. i contacted chrysler safety, they referred me to dodge customer care; they initially created a case #31892226 but then sent a letter saying they were not responsible because the car was out of a three-year warranty period and also unspecified environmental factors. although my wife and son were almost immolated, it wasn't important enough for them to check into. the car remains parked at a local garage awaiting investigation.

Ignition switch failure. after turning off car, switch slips into accessory position and drains battery. car does not start when i return to the car to go somewhere. i need to pay for a jump or new battery, or tow to my mechanic. then i have to keep replacing the ignition switch. the original ignition switch lasted until 2011. the after market ignition switches fail within about a year. sometimes within a few months. since jan. 2011, i have had to replace the ignition switch on 1/10/11 cost $147.50, 2/16/2012, cost $220.39, alternator assembly, cost $588.28 (mechanic thought it couldn't be the switch again), starter assembly again 2/21/14, cost $384.23; recommended i replace the radio since the electrical system shorted out 3/14/2014, cost $45:ignition switch again on 8/01/14, cost $110.56. also this car keeps having the left rear taillights fail. they tell me this is all part of the electrical system short which they guess is causing all of the above problems. but all these problems didn't exist until i made the first replacement of the original ignition switch. i believe that the aftermarket was full of faulty gm ignition switches and there was no way for my mechanic to tell if we were getting bad gm designed switches. luckily for me and my passengers my car didn't fail while i was driving. it always happened when the car was parked. but having 95 year old passengers, on hot florida days, get into a car that won't start, cannot be cooled down, cannot even roll down the windows since they are electric , these conditions could have killed my elderly fragile passengers. there should be some way of insuring that all those bad switches are removed from the aftermarket. *tr

We bought this car as the third owner the air bag light was on the cruise control didn't work and the horn wouldn't sound.after searching the internet,and finding out that they had many many of the internal pasts changed and the multitudes of people reimbursed, we took our car to the dealer and told because we were the third owner,and that the mileage was high,they would not accept responsibility. the car was never been in a accident,nor has it been abused. i think that because my horn can't work it may be a concern. i also think wile driving my air bag may deploy causing an insident.both dodge intrepid , and other dodges have the same problems. the problem can be resolved by paying 4-to5 hundred dollars to the consumer. i feel as though the cost and replacement of the part should go back to the manufacturer as it is an internal part in the steering that breaks with out warning and without any cause from outside sources i.e.accedentsor other. because not enough people contacted you, the manufacturer decided it wasn't good enough to be considered or issue a recall.

My pregnant wife was leaving a friends wedding with my three year old in the car, she was turning around on a side street she lost all steering i was there in a separate car i went out and checked for the problem. i found that both bolts that connect the inner tie rods to the rack and pinion steering had been broken completely. this is my wife's daily driver she has it on the freeway everyday. *tr

My 2002 dodge intrepid has had many problems since i bought it roughly four years ago. i was informed that it had a rebuilt engine and transmission. just recently it has been having problems shifting out of know where. i was at the stop light and when it turned green i pressed on the gas and it did not want to go. i let up the gas and it kicked in to first gear. when i am driving and getting up to about 30-35 mph it would go up to 3rpm and not shift. i do regular oil changes on both the transmission and engine. this problem can cause an accident because the car is just doing whatever it wants to. after reading all these other complaints it is very similar to my problem. i am understanding now why dodge stopped making intrepid. i am very disappointed and will never buy dodge again. *tr

Noticed antifreeze leaking from under center area of car, attempted to pit in antifreeze, leaked out right away. i checked the oil and it was full of antifreeze. the motor is shot. there was no warning no service lights the car has not been over heated, it was very well maintained by a local dealer.

Coolant would completely discharge randomly and the plastic harness inside the steering wheel breaks while turning, thus rendering the horn / airbag useless. the harness is a $400+ repair and the coolant system resulted in $2800 in repairs due to a chain effect of problems. it all stemmed from a defect overfill cap and water pump. the coolant discharge occurs on the drivers side wheel-well and could easily cause loss of control. it would be nice to have a functioning air bag if that were to happen. *tr

A/c evaporator, ac receiver dryer, heater core had to be replaced for my 2002 dodge intrepid. the car had less than 64,000 miles on it. the repair was extensive as the steering wheel and dash board had to be pulled out. hours of labor apprx= 8. this was a problem described in the technical service bulletin # 2400204a. apparently this part has a history of failure. cost of repair was 897.00. the main reason for this repair is because the air conditioner stopped working. i really thought we should of been reimbursed by chrysler for this repair as it was so extensive, and there was so many other complaints pertaining to this part. i researched silent warranties on this problem but could not really turn up anything to help. *tr

Two incidents: october 2007, a 2002 dodge intrepid with 2.7l v6 had an engine cooling failure causing immediate overheating problem on florida highways. the cooling fitting on the top of the engine popped off causing the engine to loose most of it's coolant. approximate mileage 106,000 this was taken to the dealer for an expensive repair. at the time the dealer did not notify me of the serious problems with this engine, such as sludge oil pump failures. on january 19th, 2009, the engine failed again. at approximately 125,000 miles. the water pump failed, the heads were blown, and probably the sludge oil pump caused this whole sequence of problems that could have been avoided if dodge made design changes back in 2007. the estimate for replacing the engine is at $6500. not feasible to repair and i found many complaints about this engine design dating back to 1998 and 1999. both failures were immediate with little warning to the driver. thank god no one was injured. owned by son nick straty *tr

I purchased a 2002 dodge intrepid 2.7 liter engine from honda cars of mckinney in may of 2005 for $7000 and felt very happy about my purchase until a about a year and half later, the engine begin leaking oil. i followed the normal maintenance schedule and had the oil changed every 3000 miles. i took my dodge to allen samuels of fort worth, texas and they "fixed" my oil leak problem for $893 but was never told about the 2.7 engine design problems which cause major oil sludge problems. after about 2 months, the engine light came on again. i took the vehicle back to the dealership and they ran another check and found that there was no oil leak (engine burns oil now) but there was a "small" transmission leak. i was unable to get any further with the dealership without paying more money? since then, i've been unable to get my car inspected and have received a number of citations for expired inspection. i was even told by a policeman that i could check with the air texas program for repair cost help. i sent in required documents and found out from christian brothers automotive that it would cost more the car is worth to fix. the state of texas has given me a $3000 voucher to replace this pos dodge. the problem now is that i'm unemployed and can't afford a car that qualifies for this benefit. i am in the process of sending a complaint to robert nardelli with chrysler but i saw this link and thought i would get the word out. the dealership and/or chrysler owe me the cost of the "oil leak" repair, cost to either replace engine/trans and the expenses to try and get it inspected. *tr

I was driving my car and noticed there was not heat. the fan was blowing, but the air was not warm. the day before, the car was running fine. i pulled over and called my husband immediately. i asked me if there were any noises, smoke, strange smells, and if the temperature was fine. i said no to all and that the temperature was fine. he said to drive a little further and see. i drove not even 1/2 mile down the road (myself and my daughter were in the middle of nowhere) and noticed smoke. i pulled over and called my husband again. he asked me if there was any water coming out of the exhaust, no there was not. he asked me to look under the hood and check the water/antifreeze reservoir. the reservoir was empty. he came out immediately and by the time he got there, the motor was all cooled down. he put 2 gallons of water in the reservoir, which seemed to disappear. he checked the oil, and there was water in it. there was not warning! i have maintained my car well and have had 90% of all my work done at the dealership where i bought it. i have done all the recommended work when they have worked on my car. i even had the radiator flushed, transmission flushed, and the serpentine belt replaced because they said it needed it. *tr

Driving around doing errands, heading to the next town (15 miles) to finish my errands and my engine started to overheat. i turned around and went to the service station that was only about 1/2 mile away and had them look at the car. i had no previous problems with it overheating. it ended up being a cracked block. i needed to get a different engine because it was to expensive to repair the original one. *tr

Brake pedal has repeatedly stuck and has to be manually unstuck, so that when accelerator is pressed the car moves. has complained to the dealer numerous times. last nov the master cylinder was replaced. having problems again and now the dealer said the master cylinder and the calipers right and left has to be replaced. *tr

While getting an oil change and having the water pump replaced, my mechanic found oil sludge under the valve covers. he said this is very common in the chrysler 2.7l engines. he cleaned it out as best he could with solvent and rags. the cost was over $200.00 for just the cleanup, and i don't know how much more sludge is in the lower part of the engine. engine failure could be coming soon. *jb

I was recently installing my britax regent as directed. and used the carseat belt for my daughter who is now about 55 lbs. while installing i saw how if we were in an accident the gen 3 seat belt acceptor would fail when it made contact with her carseat. so my child would no longer be protected. in order to install her seat i had to twist the connector about 8-10 times to keep it as far away from the seat as possible. i twisted the connector until it could not twist any further. i am still do not want to have my child ride here but i have no other choice. i will be replacing the connector as soon as i can. i want to have daimler chrysler replace my seat belt connectors with either gen 2 or gen 4 connectors. all gen 3 seat belt connectors need to be recalled and replaced! note for below numbers. i have not been involved in a crash yet. *tr

We have had so many problems with our dodge intrepid leading up to the failure of the engine. first, the engine starting stalling, we would have to restart the car and it wouldn't shift from one gear to another. then there was a leak in the coolant pipe so we had to replace that. my boyfriend then drove the car for few hours straight to go visit his family. he couldn't get the car started to come home. finally he got it started and started driving home. it died on the way home and hasn't been running since. we have been without a car because it costs so much to get it repaired and we can't sell it because we would hardly get anything for it. *tr

My wife was driving our 2002 dodge intrepid coming from my mothers house, luckily it was at low speed. while she was making a left hand turn the upper steering control arm on the driver side had broken off at the rack and pinion portion of the steering control leaving the car unable to steer. it was then towed to my near by auto mechanic. the next day it was discovered that the rack and pinion was defective at 99,000 miles i had looked for the bolt that held this arm into place it was a grade 8 bolt that stripped out of the rack. luckily she wasn't on a interstate going 65 mph while this happened with our 2 kids as this would have left a catastrophe or death upon all three dodge really needs to make a plan to recall these cars as it shows to be defective materials. *tr

Had to replace front brakes 5 times over the course of 4 1/2 years. also had rotors turned and replaced 4 times. the last set of rotors were warped within 6 months. they were drilled and slotted rotors to help heat escape, but were soon destroyed. i now have 61,000 miles on my car. i used an independent shop to replace my brakes. on my last check-up at the dealership, i asked the serviceman to check my brakes. the new set have been squealing. when i was later called to p/u my car, the serviceman said there was absolutely nothing wrong with my brakes. when i drove out the driveway of the dealership and stopped at the exit, my brakes squealed. this will continue to be an expensive repair. *tr

I purchased a 2002 dodge intrepid with a 2.7-liter engine in july of 2005 from holley dodge in middletown, ct for $9,500. the vehicle at that time had 48,000 miles on it. in july of 2007 (at 78,000 miles) i experienced engine problems and, after bringing it back to holley dodge for service, was told the engine had low compression and was offered repair options of: 1) tearing down the motor which would cost at least $2,500 depending upon what is found; 2) a rebuilt motor for $3,500+; or 3) a new motor for $4,500+. the warranty did not cover the cost (36,000 miles/3 years). i had maintain the care carefully, changing the oil every 3,000 mile which is more frequent than recommended in the owners manual. after researching this matter, i discovered a vast amount of similar complaints from all over the united states as well as numerous web sites devoted to this 2.7-liter daimlerchrysler engine problem. experts believe the engine problems may be due to engine defects or oil sludge build-up that is common in 2.7l vehicles. i have read that the center for auto safety has received five times more oil sludge complaints on chrysler 2.7l vehicles than other vehicles. apparently these complaints involve quite a few dodge and chrysler vehicles from 1998 to present. i believe chrysler is violating consumer rights under lemon laws or other consumer-protection laws. can you advise me? thanks, mike veneski *tr

Thermostat housing popped off when driving down highway this part is glued on i have seen other cars and reports of this same thing happening to others, this part should have been bolted not glued, since then have had problems with car.

As i was driving up a hill my car lost power and started to smoke. as i pulled off the road the engine quit, and a fire started under the hood.

Engine started knocking, so i stopped at a service station. they said that they do not repair 2.7 liters for chrysler. had it then towed to the chrysler dealership and they said that the motor was blown due to oil sludge and needed to be replaced at a cost of $5700.00. contacted impartial services group, sent them all information on the car, including oil changes. was made an offer by chrysler of $1080.00. turned it down as they have had the same issue with mercedes owners and have taken care of them. talked to the owner of the chrysler dealership in my area and he said "the 2.7 is a junk motor and i wouldn't have one on my lot". he also went on the tell me that the oil ports are to small to allow proper oil flow and the "v" shape in the oil pan does not allow for all of the oil to drain out during oil changes. i contacted chrysler by letter and e-mail and they said sorry, but there is nothing we can do. i am in the process of creating a web site in which will be called the national push my dodge. it will include a date in which i will push my dodge intrepid as far as needed to create awareness that chrysler has turned its back side to middle class americans. *jb

36 miles after the 30000 mile warranty, i took my car in because the glove compartment is separating from the dash. i was told it is not covered under the warranty. i am now only covered for power train now until 70000 miles. they offered to cover parts but i have to pay for the labor. i was looking at 5 -7 hours of labor. *tr

We had no injury or permanent failure yet. however, the 2.7 liter engine in the 2002 dodge intrepid continued to plague us with problems related to sludge buildup. the vehicle had regular 3,000 mile oil changes prior to the first incident, then more frequent changes after. we had the oil pan drop once to remove sludge buildup, and two oil pressure sending units installed in the last 13 months. i am very familiar with how a vehicle operates, and what to do in emergencies to avoid permanent damage to vehicle parts, and i feel that this is the only reason we have not had a permanent failure of this motor. *ak

Purchased the 2002 dodge intrepid 2/11/06. in less than 1 year the engine locked. the vehicle was towed to dealer. not to rebuild. salvaged engine wasn't an option, would only have the same problem. the mechanic found the core of the engine was beyond repair. the two mechanics expected payment. i explored the web & the cheapest rebuild engine i could find was $2,499 + core charge, that i won't get back with a shot core. the mechanic will have to be paid of course, to reinstall the re-manufactured engine. oh, and let's not forget the loan balance still required for the purchase of a car that cannot be driven. fortunately. i am able to borrow from my 401k to get the car drivable again or my daughter would be out of luck. however, the most discouraging thought was how long will the rebuild engine last? thank god it came with a 3 year unlimited mileage warranty. the original engine, when purchased used had 82,357 on it, and my daughter only got about 10,000 miles of use before it died. that was terrible.*ak

After a short 5-10 minute drive, the transmission kicks into a low gear and will not shift. i can travel about 40 mph with the tachometer reading around 4500 rpms. it sounds like the transmission is going to blow up. i had it checked by a transmission place and even though the check engine light has stayed on for the past 2 months, they cannot isolate the problem. the recommendations of the error code does not reveal the parts as problems. i can turn the car off and put it in park and the problems stops for another 5-10 minutes if i am lucky. it seems there are many complaints about this on this website and it sounds like it is time for someone to force dodge to fix their problems. i want the call to last long enough for it to be paid off and from reading others problems, i doubt that i will make it. one word needs to be said: recall. *nm

Oil light coming on at idle and then going of when pressing gas. loud ticking noise in engine. 66600 miles on vehicle of this 66600 i put 49000 on vehicle. i have had the engine diagnosed and it needs a new engine. faulty engine, it will cost several thousand dollars just to try to repair the engine and new one cost 4000 to 8000 dollars. this vehicle is dangerous and i have researched and found that there are thousands of others with this particular motor that daimler chrysler makes with the exact same problem and mileage has no effect or how often it is maintained. i cannot afford to replace this motor and daimler chrysler will not honor nor offer warranty for this problem and blames the consumers. i request an investigation, these are lemon cars and should be recalled. what if my children and i were killed because of an accident due to this engine failure? maybe that's what it will take for someone to do something about this. it is not fair to the consumers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*jb

My vehicle was being serviced for a head-gasket leak. the dodge dealer servicing my vehicle advised me to get rid of the vehicle quickly because it has sludge buildup that cannot be removed and that it runs a high risk of seizing up, which itself can result in an accident and injury. *jb

Subject: mastercraft tire tread separation comments: in march, 2003, i purchased a 2002 dodge intrepid using ebay. the car had 8,000 miles and carfax showed no accidents. when the car arrived, i noticed it had two new mastercraft sensy tires on the front, unusual for that low mileage. upon inspection, i found that the right tie rod end had been bent and not repaired, the likely cause of the new tires. i then replaced the right tie rod end and had all four wheels aligned. as the tires had a tread wear rating of 620, i figured there were good for many miles. in late july, 2006, the car had 32k miles. i was hearing a loud "slapping" sound on the front end. taking the car to a costco car center, they determined that both tires had tread separation, requiring immediate replacement. the tires had less than 25k miles on them. the car has a lifetime four-wheel alignment policy from firestone ever since i purchased it, and the front end alignment has been checked about every 3-4k miles. these tires apparently had a manufacturing defect. their identification is mastercraft sensy 01, 225 60 r16 m&s 98t, dot 3dx3 fmw 3302, not as described by your form below which has incomplete info use only the info in this paragraph to describe model, size and dot number. i suggest this defect should be investigated. the tires were left at costco and are no longer available, but i have their written statement of the problem. your comments please. thank you. *jb

While wife was driving car to store on 2 june 2006, intrepid engine shuttered and check engine light illuminated. shuttering stopped and engine runs smooth but light is still illuminated. mar 2006 engine oil change was accomplished along with a engine flush by ed's tire service, fayetteville, north carolina. july 2005 car failed inspection because of a bad battery, which was difficult to replace. between 2002-2004 front rotors have been replaced twice, once by the dodge dealership for $150.00 then once by me for $60.00. this sludge buildup problem that dodge refuses to fix is becoming stupid! they are making the money off of us, they to at least own up to their design flaw and fix the problem. does anyone know how to get sludge out of the engine other than tearing it down? *nm

I bought a 2002 dodge intrepid se in march 2003 with about 20k miles on it. had it checked by a mechanic and was told all was good. $1,420 to repair the water pump? the engine made a sound, shook slightly which made me look at the gauges to see what was up. the only thing i saw was that the temperature was a little tiny bit over the halfway mark. usually, this gauge sits without changing once the car is warmed up between the 1/4 and 1/2 mark. recommend: any service shop that changes the oil in a car should input that service into a national computer system so that anywhere people drive, move, visit, that record is permanent. that is my first suggestions. then she asked me if the car had overheated. answer: no. she said the estimate to repair the car was $1,300 and if the heads were cracked that could cost another $700. i was like, "what?" say that again. the way the 2.7l engine is built, the repairs are expensive. i asked if it was worth replacing and she said it was..she couldn't advise me...but you know how it is. this is not a problem confined to my car - it has affected a fleet of them...same type..same engine. after i drove off the lot, i heard a ticking noise. i asked about the notes on the mechanic's ticket that said, "* engine has sludge". no one ever mentioned that to me and i didn't know what it was, either, so i asked. what's that? she said, "that's just the mechanic's notes for when you bring it back." i said, "...yes...but what is it?" then a mechanic appeared and started talking about using synthetic or regular oil (how am i, a lay person, supposed to know what?) to reduce engine sludge and yes, "all these 2.7l intrepid engines have this problem." i said, "so...what does it do?" chrysler needs to fix the 2.7l engine problems, find a fix for the sludge problem even if it means replacing the engine with another type. it is not fair to cost us unnecessary repairs. *jb

My used 2002 dodge intrepid with a chrysler 2.7 engine started knocking like crazy after stopping on me several times while driving. the first expensive "repair" to correct this problem was replacement of a fuel pump and a "fuel pump cont module carter electric fuel ass" which had cracked (345.00 for the part, $600.00 for the "repair"). two weeks later the engine was knocking even more loudly and i was informed by pep boys that the engine was shot--locked up--and that i should have it towed to a dodge dealer. $172.00 later, the dodge dealer had towed my car and told me the same thing. the warranty company demanded oil change maintenance receipts which we could not produce as we have friends who change the oil for us. we were told by several engine repair companies we contacted (trying to find an affordable option) that the 2.7 engine had a defective timing chain which does not allow oil to pass through and be burned properly, causing sludge to build up and destroy the engine. of course dodge and the warranty company "blamed" it on our "poor maintenance"--we still owe 9,000 on the car!!!--the currie motors dodge dealer wanted to charge $750.00 to "tear down" the engine, then said they could put in a refurbished engine for $5300.00!! no apologies for their defective engine. no consideration whatever. they seemed gleeful that they were going to make so much money from our distress! each engine replacement company we called to inquire about the cost of replacing an engine asked, before we even told them, "is it a chrysler 2.7?" the dodge chrysler company should recall all autos with 2.7 engines and replace the engines for free with an improved 2.7 model. i know after this experience that i will never buy another dodge or chrysler or any other model marketed by these dealerships. i regret that i had no idea about dodge inferiority before i purchased the vehicle. i didn't do my "homework," i guess. *jb

After having our 2002 dodge intrepid serviced for transmission failure. we noticed engine starting to knock. wasn't sure if it was transmission or engine. ruled out transmission,took to dealer, dealer says sludge build up in pan causing engine failure,normal oil changes done,at 3400 miles average. manual calls for 7500 mile oil changes, engine bearings bad, replacement costs upwards of 5000.00 working with dealer now on getting it replaced, engine should not have failed this soon. *nm

I am the owner of a 2002 dodge intrepid. let me first start by saying that because i am a female that is on the road alone frequently, i am very conscientious about ensuring that my vehicle is properly maintained, and i have always had my oil changed between 3000-4500 miles. last week while traveling for work, my vehicle started to make a very loud knocking sound while driving down the interstate. i was very near an exit with a service station, so i immediately drove there and check my oil. i was not low on oil. back on the interstate once again, i continued to try to determine where the noise was coming from. without warning, my engine light came on and my car would not run. in heavy traffic, surrounded by many interstate trucks on i-77, i attempted to try to get to the right hand side of the road, narrowly being missed by fast moving traffic several times. after getting my vehicle to the shop, i have been told by a mechanic that my engine needs to be replaced. i do not understand how this could be possible as i have been so extraordinarily careful in making sure my vehicle was properly maintained so that it would last and i would have minimal problems. fortunately, i was not injured and i was able to get off the highway without causing an accident. it certainly could have been worse. the worse that happened is that now i have a $4000-$5000 repair bill on a vehicle that i still owe $9000 on. according to the mechanic, it is impossible to even find a used engine for my car, as all of the engines go bad on this type of vehicle. since researching my vehicle after this incident, i have seen hundreds of similar situations happening to people all over the country. if there is a defect with this vehicle, i am hoping that the manufacturer takes action and corrects the problem. i only wish i would have been advised of this problem or it could have been corrected before something happened to me on the highway. *nm

Hello i own a 2002 dodge intrepid, this vehicle has been giving me serious problems since it reached 60,000 miles. it all started with the oil light flickering on and off and the engine light would also do the same thing. then the water pump and thermostat went out. next the water outlet housing started leaking. now the transmission is acting up and the car makes big jerking motions when driving and the rpm rises up. my wife has been in the car with our children and the car would just stall, while driving. finally i had enough the safety of my family is number one priority. it seems dodge owners around this country are having similar problems at such low mileage. my neighbors, friends and family members are telling the same story. these vehicles need to be recalled, due to engine defects. i have spent hundreds of dollars already in repairs. every family deserves a vehicle that is safe for their family, friends, and neighbors. the dodge intrepid's need to be recalled, because they are very unsafe to drive. it shouldn't have to take a death to recall these vehicles. put an end to this engine failures and demand a recall. we need your help to solve this safety hazard, with these engines. i have parked the vehicle even though i still owe 4,900 dollars because i didn't want to trade the car in and put another family, in danger. my wife and i purchased another vehicle, has over 70,000 miles and runs really well. please recall the dodge intrepids, help keep are streets and highways safe, from defected engines. went out and the water outlet housing leaks. *jb

Engine failure. engine failed due to water ump allowing water to enter engine via oil pan. sludge problems caused timing chain to be excessively tight thereby causing too much pressure on waterpump bearings. waterpump bearings failed thereby letting water flow directly into engine. oil has been changed in this car regularly. this is entirely a design flaw. i still owe a lot on the car and can't afford a new engine or even a used one.*ak

Have had 2002 dodge intrepid in the dealers shop in various occasions re: the transmission not going into gear or shifting hard at the wrong speeds. we have had issues with the gears since the day we bought it '2003. we are continuously told nothing is wrong that they cannot duplicate the action. last month it wouldn't go into gear or when it did it moved slowly then the engine shut off. we were told once again they couldn't find anything wrong with it. recently 8/8/05 it begin kicking and bucking while driving on 8/9/05 the service tech told us it is something totally different a "cam sensor" that they "think is possibly bad or more internal issues with the engine." all through it they cannot duplicate what we have been complaining about. the check engine light is on now and the air bag light is on yet, they cannot seem to repair these. we have an extended warranty on the car yet, we feel the dealership is being dishonest with us. we also feel that we have been sold a lemon. we have record of each time the car was at the dealership and they have a journal of all visits in their database. we have kept the car well maintained and at 49k miles it should not be having these issues. *nm

Dt: the contact was driving 60-65 mph and heard a clanking noise. then, vehicle went out of gear and went down to 15-20-mph. the tachometer was up to 4 mph, but the mileage was down 5-10- mph. did not work even when putting foot on the gas. she had to shut the car off in order to get it into the right gear. it felt like the gears were stuck. the dealer told her that valves in the transmission were stuck. the contact had to cut the car off 10 times a day in order to get it to go into gear. *ak

The vehicle just started knocking to it to the shop and was told it need a new engine car has less the 70,000 miles on it and its only a 2002. the repair shop says it has sludge that caused it to spin a bearing. the good news i have a warranty the bad news is the wont cover the whole repair and is given me the run around about fixing the car. also had to have the transmission replaced just 2 months ago. *nm

On 12/18/2002, i purchased a "leftover" 2002 dodge intrepid se. i recently refinanced my home and paid off the car loan less than 3 years later. as soon as i recieved my title for the vehicle, the engine failed! i brought the intrepid to a local mechanic who stated that he saw sludge in the engine and that i should contact sansone route 66 in neptune, nj to replace the engine. i contacted the dealer who stated that the vehicle was out of warrantee for two reasons; first, because the intrepid has 47,000 miles on it (i bought it with 12,801 miles on it) and second, because the mechanic found sludge in the engine which i was told was my fault for not changing the oil! i have changed the oil regularly with mobile1 synthetic oil and used mobil 1 oil filters (confirmed by mechanic) as well as having other oil changes done. this is a complete failure of dodge/chrysler to honor its commitment to repairing faulty engines; i have done research and have observed many others with similar problems.

2002 dodge intripid blew it's engine 2.7 on 07/002/05 on hwy 50 while i was driving with my daughter in the car. it has been 14 days and the car is still at the dealers not fixed. we are still in a rental while they decide if my car will be fixed. we had to drive apx 2 miles as slow as 5-15 miles per hour to get off the hwy. the service writer says the problem is oil sludge. i think the engine is a hazard to human life and any other vehicle on the highway.

Dt: the problem began two or three days ago. while driving vehicle shut off and stopped. the check engine light came on. vehicle was taken to a mechanic, and was unable to determine what the code meant. vehicle was taken to a second mechanic, who again was unable to determine the cause of the problem. this mechanic changed the rotors, but also was unable to tell what the code meant. the vehicle shut down on a main road, a 4 lane highway, while traveling about 50 mph. there was no other warning besides the check engine light to indicate that the car was going to shut down. vehicle coasted to a stop and rested in the turning lane. there was a little braking, but no steering ability. electrical system was still functioning. the police came ,and the vehicle was towed to a shop. then a couple days later the vehicle started back up with a clutter in the engine.*ak

I was driving to church on may 15, 2005 while i was approaching a stoplight the water temp. gauge began to move to the dangerously high temp. side and then the engine began making a ticking sound and white smoke came from the engine, then the engine shuts down completely. the thermostat & water pump failed which led to the oil getting hot inside the engine, which led to oil sludging because of narrow oil ports within the engine, which cause the timing chain to fail and the cylinder heads to become damaged. i called chrysler about this engine defect and they placed the blame on me instead of fixing the defect. i will now have to replace the engine for $4,000 or let it be repossessed. i have a 2002 dodge intrepid se with 2.7l engine.

I financed a 2002 dodge intrepid in february 2003. the payments are over $400 per month for 6 years.on december 21, 2004, the engine failed. i still had a warranty on the vehicle, so i called to have it towed to the dealer where i purchased it. after authorizing them to break the engine down and see exactly what the problem was, i was told it needed a new engine. after the warranty company came out to do their inspection, i was told it was my fault and i was responsible for all charges. they said the problem was sludge buildup and lack of oil change. my problem is that there was no warning at all. there was no engine knocking , the check engine light never came on, the car was running good. and then one day the engine is no good. i still have 4 years to pay for this vehicle and i have to buy a new engine, which costs $4,000 to $7,000. We are experiencing an on-going problem with the brakes on my 2002 dodge intrepid. the brake pedal sticks after applying the brakes. when this happens the brake pedal must be pulled up with your foot. initially we experienced a slight sticking of the pedal when depressing on the brakes, as the pedal was going down. the problem is intermittent and takes you by surprise but has not caused an accident. the manufacturers dealer service has not been able to resolve the issue after several attempts. we are concerned that the problem may get worse but the dealer where we bought the car has given up on resolving the problem and the manufacturer has not yet responded to our messages. *ak

My 2002 intrepid stalled on the highway less than a year from the purchase date. i was on the expressway doing approximately 60mph, when the engine completely stopped running, the oil light came on...luckily i was able to pull over to the side of the highway safely. the dealership stated that the engine seized due to sludge, however, the oil was changed as scheduled. the estimated bill was $5,000. after investigating this issue, i have found numerous websites dealing with the same issues, with consumers telling the exact same story that i had. it appears to be an issue with the 2.7 liter engine in the intrepid and all of the people who commented were accused of non maintenance of the vehicle because of sludge. chrysler refuses to take the blame. i am still looking into whether or not my vehicle is covered under the lemon law, it has less than 18,000 miles since purchase and has been 1 year since purchase. *la

Rack & pinion failed. reported to dealer more than once after initial clunking noise. dealer failed to identify the problem. the problem occurred at 39,000 miles on the car. called chrysler and they said since warrenty had expired they could not do anything. new rack and pinion installed by local workshop.*ak

The brake pedal went down to the floor when trying to stop the vehicle causing the vehicle not to stop. an independent mechanic determined that the brake line ruptured due to the brake line rubbing against a bolt. please provide any additional information. *nm the bolt was located behind the power steering unit, which was on a collar type device, which appeared to be attached to the catalytic converter unit. *jb

Consumer complained about automatic transmission gear position indicated (prndl) problem. while vehicle is parked, the consumer's child can move the gear shift without the key being in the ignition. the vehicle was in the drive way and the consumer's son inadvertently was able to push gear shift in to neutral, this resulted in a collision off of a rock retaining wall. the child was slightly shaken up inside the vehicle. the manufacturer and the dealer are aware of the problem.

Consumer made an appointment with the dealer for recall 03v035000 repairs concerning seat back recliner bolt. dealer indicated to the consumer that the repairs would take a half hour. vehicle was at dealer for two hours and the dealer mechanic didn't look at the vehicle. *ak

Problems brake rotors and odometer on 2002 dodge intrepid es.*mr the vehicle made an unusual noise and then shut down. the dealer indicated that the start-up alarm system needed to be regulated. the dealer made the repairs but the problem continued. a few days later the noises continued, the odometer stopped and the vehicle didn't indicate what gear it was in. the vehicle was taken to another dealer who corrected the problem. the consumer later learned that the vehicle needed new rotors and brake pads on all four wheels. the vehicle was returned to the sales dealer who was no longer in business. after contacting chrysler, she was told there was nothing they could do. the consumer doesn't think the rotors should have failed within four months or ownership. *ph *nlm

The consumer was driving approximately 35 mph when another vehicle hit the driver's front. neither air bag deployed upon impact. there were injuries to driver and passenger. please provide further information. *nlm

It started out as just a rough idle. they couldn't duplicate it and told me to drive it until it got worse. i did. it then added trying to go dead when i pulled into parking places. they again couldn't duplicate concern. take it and drive it until it gets worse. then it started racing occassionally while at idle and would take five or six times to start only to to go dead when you pulled a short distance and came to a complete stop. they still can't duplicate the problem. chrysler told them to replace the head. the mechanic says there's nothing wrong with that head and that it will not fix the problem. i know they're going to give it back to me and say drive it until it gets worse again. the next step is for it to go dead in traffic and cause a wreck. *ak

We have a 2002 dodge intrepid, we have replaced 2 fuses for the a/c and now they said it is the fan. the a/c man told us there was a recall on the caravans and the stratus. i feel that the intrepid should be added. this is the second vehicle we have had this problem with. we had a plymouth voyager and the same thing happened. i feel that you should check these vehicles concerning this.*ak

Consumer states that automatic door lock does not work. she had replaced the one in the front door. the doors automatically lock at 15 mph, but will not release until she cut the vehicle off. but the lock in the back will not release until all the other automatically release, and then has to release it manually. consumer states that the mechanic can repair it, but it will cost approximately $250.00 per door. she feels this is a safety issue, because if something happens and the passengers cannot get out of the vehicle. *ak

When you first start the car it would not move when you put it in any gear, then when it did finally move you may start moving and then it was like the transmission was shifted into neutral. took the car in to the dealer, and had it checked, said it was a quart low on fluid, car was sent back home with me, a few days later did the same thing, took it back and the dealer where the transmission was replaced, new transmission would not shift out of low gear, had dealer tow it in, stated to me the the transmission controler needed reprogramming, it was reprogrammed and sent back out on the road, about 100 miles later it was a repeat, would not shift out of low gear, had the vehilce towed in again, dealer replaced transmission and controller, picked the car up from the dealer, i found a bracket that they had left loose that was within a fraction of coming in contact with the rack and pinion steering, returned to dealer to have bracket reattached. i have filed lemon law on this car. *ak

Car began with not accelerating. it would feel as though it was sticking. i would be driving and between it changing from 2nd to 3rd gear (40-50mph), it would jerk or feel like it was popping into the third gear. i bought the car at 19,000 miles, took it to the dealership at 30,000 miles and they said there were no fault codes, (warranty ended at 36,000 miles) transmission ok. now at 50,000 miles, my car has electrical and internal transmission problems. it will cost me anywhere from $1700-$2100. i have not had the car a full year. called the manufacturer, nothing they can do for me, called the dealership where car was purchased, nothing they can do for me.*ak

Passenger inside door handle broke off at only 41000 miles. called the service dept and am told it is not covered. will have to pay for repair. i will never buy this car again. this is my second intrepid and was too stupid to learn my lesson the first time. dodge is now a memory, i am sorry but i am buying japanese. everytime i have a problem they either cannot find the cause or it is not covered by the warranty how could a handle break when i take care of the car so well. unbelievable! another lost patriotic american changing to foreign vehicles. i hope they go bankrupt!*ak

I have a 2002 dodge intrepid that i purchased on april 11th, 2003 and i have been hearing a lot of reports on the gen 3 seat belts, and i would like to have mine replaced. i have two small children who use the seat belts, a 5 year old and a 2 month old. *jb

The air conditioner did not work. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated the air conditioner condenser was punctured by a foreign object. *ak the puncture site was in front of the condenser. the dealer stated it was not covered under warranty because of the puncture site. the consumer stated the a/c never worked since purchased. *scc *jb

My vehicle will intermittently stall. the car can be driving at any speed and the front end will lock up on it as if it were being put in park. the engine light comes on and i to have put the vehicle in park and then restart the vehicle. recently i had a near miss accident which two individuals almost hit me due to the car locking up. *jb

Loose ground wire to battery posed electrical problems. also, odometer tampering. vehicle died while driving. also, suspension/ steering problems. dealer replaced all four bulbs on headlamps and high/low beam dimmer switch ,and cleaned out engine hoses, pcv valve and fuel filter. *ak

We have a 2002 dodge intrepid with the police package. the vehicle has 21,000 miles and we have replaced the brake rotors 4 times. we are a security firm and thus we have never been in a high speed chase and only drive the vehicle on residential streets. we have three other different vehicles and have not had brake problems with them. it was suggested by the dealer that we are misusing the brakes. i have talked with another police agency in the area and they have also had the same problems as we. i believe there is a problem with the brakes that come with the police package option.

When driving at 60-65 mph vehicle will shut off , dashboard lights will turn on, but all other lights will go off. this has occurred three times over the past few months. *ak

The oil light flickers when i slow down, and when i am at idle at a light, the oil light comes on and only goes away when i accelerate. i am concerned that the bearings and/or oil pump need replacing before any more significant damage starts with the engine. i have called auto shops and no one gives me a straight answer on what it is. all i know is that repairs are very expensive. this is horrible, its only a 2002!*jb

I purchased a 2002 dodge intrepid brand new, this is my second daimlerchrysler vehicle that has not held up well that i consider a lemon. at 26 miles, the abs light came on for a few seconds, then turned off, there was almost no braking power. i had to quickly downshift into low gear to slow down the car. this has happend several times. at first i thought it may have been things breaking in. dodge dealers just deleted the "internal cab failure fault code" and did nothing to try and fix this. later the steering began squeaking during low speed manuvers. then i experienced play in the steering wheel. at 2000 miles the vehicle would wander and would almost never drive straight. after 2 dealership alignments and 1 independent, the steering wheel is still off center. 3 different oem tires rotated to front completely worn on outer edges, abnormal tire wear and feathering. suspension squeaks loudly at times. at about 500 miles the transmission would sometimes slam into 3rd gear, shift rough in lower gears, bump, hesitate, stumble. dodge dealership always "could not duplicate" the problem. i almost crashed when driving and front wheel hit moderate puddle when vehicle was thrown into another lane. i was told by the service manager "those things happen". i have written and spoke to daimlerchrysler reps many times, they deny there is any problem. at about 13,000 miles the engine would clank when starting sometimes (sounds like not firing up properly). i have never had these problems with any other vehicle, even front wheel drive and do not see how they can get away with this. there are many others experiencing similar premature problems that should not be occuring as such. i have started a website against daimlerchrysler corporation - http://intrepid.clan-510.org - email address is [email protected] - address: po box 2021 san leandro, ca 94577-2021. *ak

Yesterday i had a 4 wheel computerized alignment performed. it was difficult and sometimes almost impossible to tell the car was out of alignment because it would drift to the left or right. that night when pulling out away from friends house, having wheel turned sharp and waiting at idle something in the front end was vibrating and it would change when wheel was moved. later that night steering wheel tightened up as it had before all of a sudden when driving. wheel was really difficult to turn all of a sudden, steering became much more sensitive all of a sudden where it previously was not. when braking or accelerating wheel would feel even move difficult to turn and almost stuck. i tried to get a friend to drive the car. she started to drive it in a parking lot, i asked her to manuver with the car and after driving for a minute she didn't want to because she felt the car was not handling well and didn't feel right. i manuvered in the parking lot and at 15 mile low speed manuvering and sharp turns tires were squealing as if performing high speed manuvers. at one time i was able to send the vehicle into a controlled skid although it has abs. i could not get car to skid again and abs seemed to be working fine. i noticed a clunk felt in the steering assembly when braking hard at lower speeds. the steering attitude and characteristics should not intermittently change. the car still wonders on the freeway and wheel needs constant attention. this car does not feel safe to drive and i don't know why i'm continually being told it's normal. i have driven 3 dodge intrepids and know how they should drive. i even had someone who has driven 3 second generation rental car intrepids and he didn't like the way my intrepid drove at times either. the steering assembly seems to be deteriorating quickly over time and sometimes fails to perform as it should. the vehicle also came out of the factory out of alignment and with two tires that needed to be balanced and since corrected. nlm

I have had steering/suspension and brake related issues from normal driving in the bay area since 200 miles after purchasing vehicle new. i have had to pay for a professional computerized full precision alignment and balancing of two tires that were out of balance from the factory. two dodge/chrysler dealers and wheel specialsts have checked and adjusted tire pressure. vehicle seems to drive straight more often but still drifts to the left, sometimes to the right. front wheels feel like they are slipping bad over bumps even at low speeds. very intermittently steering wheel becomes harder to turn and is much more sensitive all of a sudden. vehicle does not seem to be handling or taking bumps very well at times. wheel does not usually return smoothly or consistantly, sometimes jerky and sometimes slow, usually off center, oversteering or understeering. steering wheel sometimes needs constant attention, having to remind wheel where to go. wheel will move by itself excessively at times on bumpy roads or on slanted roads sometimes almost making complete turns on it's own. sometimes steering wheel has looseness. clunk in steering still continues wheen wheel is turned sharp and braking. excessive amount of groaning noise wheen turning wheel at times. i had to brake hard the other day and was able to lock vehicle up into a heavy skid although vehicle has abs. vehicle feels unstable sometimes and over bumpy roads sometimes. every once and a while you can hear squeaking from struts. i am not the only person experiencing these issues. i have witness testimony on video and video proof. i have video of massive tire squealing at low speed 15mph manuvering in parking lot. my girlfriend does not want to drive the car also experiencing and complaining of these issues. transmission still hesitates or stumbles sometimes. two dealerships say there is nothing wrong with car and couldn't duplicate anything abnormal with steering. chrysler does nothing. car is unsafe at times.

Vehicle lately has not felt safe enough to drive at times. steering wheel moves itself excessively at times and moves excessively to imperfections in roads. steering continues to drift right or left. clunk still heard in steering every once and a while. vibration in steering wheel sometimes on smooth surfaces at higher speed. i had vehicle towed to another dealership as a precaution. i am trying another dealership to try to have my steering issues corrected. dealership adjsuted tire pressure and stated that steering was fine after road test. supposed chrysler representative was there and supposedly test drove the vehicle as well and stated it drove fine as well. shop foreman stated vibration was because wheels needed to be balanced. also stated that it's normal for vehicles to drift when you let go of the wheel. they acknowledged the excessive right tire wear and agreed to do an alignment. dealership stated they did not have time and service advisor stated an alignment could take 7 hours. 7 hours......? i'm afraid they are going to try and align the vehicle to counter these issues or it's going to take that long because there's a problem. this is scheduled for next week. driving home from the dealer along sloped freeway onramp, after letting hands off the wheel the vehicle almost made a complete right turn on it's own. on the freeway vehicle was drifting to the right and to the left. after accelerating from a complete stop and front wheel hit a bumpy part in the road the steering wheel turned itself to the left. steering wheel still feels like it sticks and does not return like it should. i have driven a chrysler town & country as a test and it drives straight when you let off the wheel, the wheel does not move by itself as the intrepid even over really bumpy roads. the wheel always returns how it should. i have had several people drive my car and they all agree even before i explained how i felt about it's steering. chrysler's design is poor if this is normal.*ak

I have brought this vehicle to the dealership twice where i purchased it complaining of intermittent looseness in steering, squeaking and clunking. the dealer could not duplicate these issues, squeaking was supposedly tire noise, clunking was "just bushings". my right front tire is severly worn on the outer edges at only 5900 miles, the left tire wear is normal. dealer would not explain or asses why this is. today i had the steering wheel turned sharp to the left and there was a vibrating noise as if metal was hitting against metal. i called someone out to witness this. about two miles later i was driving and the steering wheel was difficult to turn all of a sudden and steering felt heavy. vehicle all of a sudden turns sharper and steering responds different than usual. when trying to investigate issue and manuvering the steering back and fourth the vehicle was swerving excessively as it never had before. front end felt as if it was taking bumps harder than usual and was even hopping slighly over some bumps. i could hear noise in the passenger side front wheel area. i immediately brought the vehicle to the dealer. the shop foreman road tested and wouldn't say much about the steering. i explained that the wheel was always much easier to turn and explained that the steering is all of a sudden responding differently. several bumps felt harsh from the passenger side where they had not felt as harsh before. i could hear and feel a light clunking during braking three times from the passenger seat. shop foreman didn't really seem to notice much wrong as usual. he did see the tire wear and was like "wow". he is going to ask the service manager for permission to put the vehicle on their alignment machine. they have looked at the vehicle on the lift twice and never found anything visually wrong. i have made an appointment to have the vehicle looked at by another vehicle for a second opinion. i feel unsafe in this vehicle and unfortunately no other alternative to get to work.

Brakes failed initially at about 30 miles, at about 40mph i hit brakes lightly, brakes didn't work, brake pedal felt rough and abs light illuminated. several seconds later abs light turned off and brakes felt as if they were working again. this happened again several hundred miles later and was similar. about 200 miles after that i once hit the brakes hard to slow down, they felt rough and didn't work. brakes have worked since. i assumed that the brakes needed to be broken in. i was reluctant to mention it because the dealer's service department can rarely duplicate or troubleshoot a problem. today i spoke to the shop foreman and he was able to pull codes from the brake controller and found a failure code. the dealer was not able to work on the vehicle today so i will be bringing it back asap.*ak

My seat belts in this car are too easy to open. all it takes for an article of clothing to hit the button and it pops open. i have three young children riding in my car with me and the other day my daughter dropped her juice cup onto the latch when she fell asleep and it opened. i was unaware that it opened until my older daughter stated what had happened. i contacted the dealership and they said that there was no recall issused for the seatbelts, however i feel that this is a major safety issue. later that night my husband went to the car and just rested his arm in the back on the button very gently as if a child might and it opened. i think this is a serious issue that needs to be addressed, as well as other people made aware that this might happen to them. *ak

Transmission intermittently bump shifts or slams into gear. when driving at around 40-50mph and flooring it to accelerate then letting off the accelerator pedal there is sometimes a bang or bump, sometimes harsh felt in the front end or transmission. this is sometimes so hard that passengers feel it and complain in regard to it. bump is sometimes felt on deceleration in lower gears nearing a stop. sometimes feels like it's shifting rough in lower gears. gear selector feels stuck sometimes after parking and trying to shift into reverse. transmission sometimes makes whining noise, not sure if this is normal. transmission seems to hesitate sometimes before kicking down in low gear or upshifting. took vehicle into dealership, shop foreman says there are no updated transmission control module (tcm) revisions after checking. also states no fault codes were found from transmission. states that transmission issues could not be duplicated.*ak

Steering sometimes squeals/squeaks at end of u-turn when steering wheel is turned all the way (lock to lock condition) at about 10mph. steering began to sometimes slightly drift to the left even on flat roads where previous vehicle did not. this first occured at about 200 miles. the condition was unfortuantely not noticed on vehicle test drive. at about 3000 miles issue persists and now sometimes clunk is felt in steering at times when wheel is turned and stopping. this usually occurs when steering is turned sharp then vehicle is stopped. steering once felt loose and floppy suddenly then seemed to correct itself after driving for about 20 miles. brought vehicle in for service at dealer due to issue. shop foreman called and stated that he could not duplicate any of the issues. went on road test with shop foreman and was able to get steering to squeek at the end of sharp turns several times. he thought this was caused by the paint on the road with the tires. i told him this has also occured otherwise. i was able to get steering to clunk several times and he acknowledged this and stated that not much could be done since steering assembly seemed fine. he offered to check and tighten steering related bolts and did this. steering currently has better feel and seems to perform better, not sure yet if these issues are completely corrected. i am still concerned because i had countless steering problems with my previous intrepid, which resulted in an accident. i assumed this issue was only with that intrepid since it seemed to be a lemon. i assumed that a new 2002 dodge intrepid would not have these kinds of issues.*ak

After several days of owning the vehicle the driver side door has become noticeably out of alignment. the dealer was able to correct this and realign the door assembly. also, i noticed that the rear light piece on the top part of the trunk seems to have been cut sloppy from the factory. the bottom edge is jagged and seems to have been poorly trimmed from the factory. i notice this when opening my trunk and when washing the vehicle and feel that it is tacky. selling dealer stated that no one usually sees that so they are cut like that from the factory. the trunk also makes a rubbing sound when opening, which sounds like the wire cover rubbing. vehicle includes a trunk cargo net with the floor mounting hooks not exposed and seems as if you are supposed to tear holes in the carpet from looking at the cargo net instructions. i would like to be able to use the cargo net for groceries but i do not feel comfortable tearing holes in my carpet. i expected a quality vehicle for the price i paid and it so far does not seem that i have recieved a decent quality vehicle with all the issues i am experiencing.*ak

There is a strange unknown beep sound that comes from the inside drivers side of vehicle. this is not the door a jar chime. i am not sure if it has to do with the cd player or stereo being on. several passengers have noticed this intermittent beeping that seems to occur for no specific given reason or time. the beep is always the same volume, tone and sounds like some type of bmw or honda anti-theft device that beeps instead of chirping a siren or horn. this just occurs sometimes for no specific reason and i have not been able to invoke it. several passengers thought it was an anti-theft device. the intrepid has keyless entry but no anti-theft device and has stock base cd player. i have tried everything to try and invoke it, locking, unlocking, opening and closing the doors. also a seperate issue, when driving with cruise control and accelerating with the cruise button an interference type, light clicking noise can be heard in the drivers side speaker during transmission kickdown and acceleration using the cruise control accel button. the speed of the noise increases with the speed of the vehicle and begins to fade until you cannot hear it. this is intermittent and does not always occur. passengers have also heard and questioned this as well. these issues are a distraction and i would like to know why they occur. selling dealer cannot duplicate.*ak

Steering issues still continue. after steering was feeling loose for some time it felt as if it tightened up all of a sudden. slight vibration once felt in steering wheel on freeway. steering wheel slightly flopped to the right today while driving and steering seemed to drift. steering felt jerky and would cause vehicle to almost swerve. steering does not feel normal. manufacture is supposed to arrange for district technician to check at dealership. steering jerks usually during hard acceleration and did not do this when vehicle was new until recently. i am concerned that the steering my fail or not perform as it should. i have had a witness drive my car for verification. steering attitude intermittently changes. i am used to driving front wheel drive chrysler vehicles and the steering attitude should not change as such.*ak

I have made a previous comment in regard to my new 2002 dodge intrepid's steering (sometimes squeaking in lock to lock condition (end of u-turn at about 10mph), clunking, steering once feeling loose and drifting to the left). i had also mentioned that the shop foreman didn't really know what he could do about it since the steering was visually inspected and seemed fine. the shop foreman offered to put the vehicle on the lift and tighten up steering related bolts. the steering now feels more solid and has a better feel to it however i would like to inform you that the squeaking/squealing when wheel is turned all the way on u-turns at about 10mph still persists. the clunking that occurs when the wheel is turned nearly all the way and the vehicle is stopped still persits. i felt the clunking in the front end twice today in a parking lot. the clunking feels like it is the steering assembly. i am extremely unhappy having to be concerned with a car that is so new with such low mileage and has been taken care of. i would like to know why i am having these issues and what is causing them.*ak
