2001 TOYOTA Sequoia

Over course of 3 days last weekend, our Sequoia experienced activations of the TRAC Control/VSC/Brake systems. This has also occurred 4 other times over the last 3 years. All occurred during dry conditions on dry roads. At 70 mph brakes were applied automatically by computer with VSC light flashing and TRAC lights remained on. Later on in the evening, moving at about 10 miles per hour the same actions occured but it sounded like a loud grinding sound from the front end. It let off and occurred a few hundred yards later. This has been repeated 2 other times since. A scan of the onboard computer does not indicate any errors when the TRAC and VSC lights are on. Lots of complaints on this problem. Only 2003s recalled – Toyota needs to expand. This was NOT driver activation as they like to call it. reference PE08072 and EA09006. Research on the internet indicates that this is a widespread problem and a local autoparts clerk indicated it was a common problem. Previous complaint to NHTSA is ODI ID Number: 10368149. There are 40 complaints on the website for this problem alone. What the heck is Toyota’s problem? I have not fixed it because there is not a consensus on the problem and Im not spending money on a guesstimate!

Whole A/C system went out secondary to manufactures defect according to toyota mechanic. Was expected to pay 2500.00 for cost of labor and parts. Had several attempts of arguing with Toyota dealer owner and finally agreed to pay all but 400.00 in which I was responsible for. I don’t feel that I sould be responsible for any cost of the repair since it was a manufactures defect.

We have a Toyota Sequoia, the problems are the 4 wheel drive is not operating all the time. It does not engage sometimes and does not stay in 4 wheel drive. One example is my wife had six friends in the vehicle the 4 wheel drive did not stay engaged and the vehicle skid control made the engine loose power so she slid backwards down a hill. No one would ride in our 4wheel drive again. The vehicle skid control makes the engine loose power while in traffic. There is also a hesitation in the engine when accelerating from a complete stop. Another problem is the braking system is not adequate for the vehicle. The entire front brakes had to be replaced. The vehicle has been in for the same repairs at least 10 times and is still not working the way it should. We have all the documentation for service on our Sequoia. We have done internet research through NHTSA and have found the same problem with other Toyota Sequoia’s. There was also a problem with the air conditioner having a bad oder from bacteria growing, the exhaust manifold was loose and the power window motors made a loud noise. We have filed a complaint on all the same problems with NHTSA, Comsumer Affairs of California and you. We want to pursue the Lemon Law and get our money back. We are currently working with Toyota Arbritration but are getting nowhere. We have had Toyota’s previously and had no problems with them. This vehicle is a LEMON.

THE O2 sensor is bad the price of repair is 300.00 but because it is attached to the manifold the price goes to 1200.00 because replacing it strips the threads in the manifold requiring a new manifold. toyota states this is typical even though there is nothing wrong with the manifold and will not assist in the cost

The manifold on the passenger side is warped and there is no sense of customer service either from the dealer or toyota. I have 49000 miles and they say that the manifold is not power tran – Its an exhaust problem. I bought a toyota bacause of the supposed reliability but I have never heard of a proble like this happening at 49000 miles.

At around 14,000 started having problems with front brakes. When applying them they would make a horrible grinding sound. Took car in to dealership and they said they found nothing wrong. At 19,993 miles still having the same problem, took car back to dealership and was told I needed new brakes. They told me the Sequoia was real heavy and went through brakes fast. I owned an Expedition before this and never had these problems. Now again at 26,000 miles, I\’m started the same problems all over again. So is this normal for brakes to last 6,000 – 10,000 miles. I doubt it.

My truck would be perfect aside from the major corrosion located on the entire frame. i’m on borrowed time with my vehicle. toyota should replace the frame before the bottom drops out. the cause of this would probably be cheap parts from the factory.

My 2001 sequoia, suddenly showing the vsc lights and brake lights at the same time! there is a very rough feeling when i'm driving the car like something in the undercarriage is very wrong. there is a twice beep and the car, will suddenly pull to the left momentarily and then release itself but the lights never go out unless car is off. i can feel the brakes like shaking.i s scary and this happen like 4 times.the last is in the highway.is make a noise like a scratch metal.i know i'm not the first one .please toyota fix the problem. *tr

Frame rust on 2001 toyota sequoia - vin#[xxx]. toyota case # [xxx]. on mar. 7, 2013 this vehicle's frame was inspected and found to be ok and then treated with a rust inhibitor as part of a toyota recall campaign. the dealer doing this service was toyota of scranton, in pa. 3 1/2 years and 11,000 miles later this vehicle failed the pa state inspection due top significant frame rust through. there are large holes in the frame and in some areas in the rear very little solid metal remaining in the frame. the trailer hitch is attached to the damaged frame making an accident when towing a trailer highly likely. the value of the vehicle has gone from $5,000 to 500 and i will sell the vehicle for scrap and parts. the vehicle is in excellent condition, except for the rotted frame. i believe there are now thousands of unsafe toyota sequoia, tundra, and tacoma vehicles operating on public highways. i have not had an accident simply because the yearly state inspection showed the extent of the damage. i often pull a 5000# ski boat, and 2 horse trailer behind my sequoia. i will not risk the safety of my family, my horses, and fellow motorists by driving this car. but, how many drivers are completely unaware? how many believe the toyota recall was effective and their vehicles are safe? i believe toyota knew the rust treatment was simply a way to buy some time and they are now rejecting cases "that recall campaign has expired" was what [xxx] my toyota case manager's told me. she didn't offer any help, no buyback, no frame replacement, and she didn't say i should no longer drive the car. toyota knows this is a big problem and they are now putting their loyal customers at risk, and all who share the roads with these unsafe vehicles. the issue will be most acute in the areas of the us where highways are salted and treated for winter driving. driver's in upstate ny, nh, maine, mi, wi, mn, etc. are at high risk and toyota knows. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Intermittent vsc control warnings, breaking engaged with pulling vehicle steering to the right. sometimes with only the warning lights and check lights. first occurrence day after purchase of this used vehicle (50 miles). took back to dealership and could not find nothing wrong, very scare . speed has been between 10 to 65 mph. highway and city driving.

Happened yesterday 3 times in less than 2 hours . vsc traction control engages for no reason. driving at 55 mph on freeway, the truck applies the breaks sharply, trac light comes on with a warning beep, makes a loud grinding noise and can't use the breaks or stering. barely made to the side of the road in a busy freeway. it was terrifying specially when your little kid is in the truck. it could have caused a big accident.

Extensive frame rust is causing large holes to develop in important structural locations. in some areas, two sides of the 4 sided frame remain. vehicle is unsafe to drive or even lift.

Vehicle pulls to the right especially when stopping

Frame badly rusting out. the toyota dealer sprayed it out a few years ago but now rusted rear differential is leaking. the whole rear axle a single welded piece. this particular vehicle was purchased and used in connecticut (ct), garaged and presently has 98k miles on it.

While driving our 01 sequoia sr5 with only 85,000 miles on side streets and highways at speeds ranging from 5mph to 70 mph, the suv's braking system suddenly engages for no reason while the veh. is in motion. the vsc, check engine lights come on along with the alerting sound. when the brakes engage, the veh. veers to the right, the steering wheel vibrates and the veh. goes into a skid due to the brakes being suddenly engaged. the veh. also decelerates suddenly as if it has lost power. this is dangerous for other drivers who can't tell if you are braking because there are no brake lights to be seen to prevent a collision. thankfully we have been able to react defensively and avoid collisions with other veh.'s. and roadside objects. we have seen several suggestions as to the fix for this problem like the yaw rate sensor being replaced. the cost of the part is $568.00 without the install cost.this problem is a safety issue and if it occurs at the wrong time, a preventable tragedy is going to occur. i have seen well over 50 complaints on this from other owners and a closed nhtsa investigation on this exact issue. they recalled the 2003 sequoia for the same issue. toyota needs to fix this in all model years before a life is lost. see 2003 recall info below: 2003 sequoia recall #10v176000 recall date 04/30/2010 component electronic stability control read more at https://www.cars.com/recalls/toyota-sequoia-2003/#qjwyc1mk25ovhgfx.99 read more at https://www.cars.com/recalls/toyota-sequoia-2003/#qjwyc1mk25ovhgfx.99

My complaint stems from the vehicle stability control (vsc) issue that commonly plagues the 2001-2001 toyota sequoia. as many others have filed complaints over this vsc issue, mine is no different. my sequoia, a 4x4 sr5 with 160k miles, works flawlessly other than the vsc lights being constantly illuminated while driving. the results of the malfunction, possibly from the yaw rate sensor, present a momentarily loss of power and random unexplained steering events. the only way to temporary clear the vsc lights and the effects of the malfunction is to completely stop the vehicle, turn off the ignition and restart the vehicle. i fear a loss of control of the vehicle while my wife and kids are driving at highway speeds. i would like to see toyota issue a formal recall or pay for a new yaw rate sensor and the consumer pays the labor. other than the vsc issue, the sequoia is a great vehicle overall.

My 2001 sequoia (151,000 mi) which has been garaged and maintained meticulously is suddenly showing the vsc lights and brake lights at the same time! there is a very rough feeling when i'm driving the car like something in the undercarriage is very wrong. there is a "clunking" noise as slow as 5 mph at all times and all speeds. at high speeds, the car will suddenly pull to the left momentarily and then release itself but the lights never go out unless car is off. i have read the 138 complaints at the dot.gov site about this exact problem and thus far, toyota corp is ignoring the complaints.where is the recall for this problem. i know alot of owners who haven't even investigated why it's happening in thier truck too. how can they do business like this ??? this is a life threatening problem for toyota !!! i will stop at nothing to have toyota repair their problem on their product. just fix your problem toyota and i will call off the dogs... simple stuff.

While driving on flat, dry, level pavement at freeway speeds the vsc has been activating causing the steering wheel to jerk to the right. as the steering wheel pulls the vehicle to the right there is a chime, then the vsc and trac system shuts its self off and the "off" light stays illuminated until the engine is shut off. upon restart, the vsc is on again and the cycle repeats. the check engine light is not on. there is no way to predict when the wheel will be jerked again. seems very dangerous.

The engine warning light keeps coming on. i have it repaired and a few months later it comes back on. this has been happening since i bought the car used 10 year ago.

Just driving along, and feels like the brakes grab - - jerk the wheel truck rocks and vsc trac lights go on. problem has been occurring intermittently for months. can be at highway speeds, but also happens at any speed. very dangerous and scary. i recalled having a problem with my pistons in my calipers seezing up so i replaced them. but shortly after on the highway i had to come to a immediate stop not slamming on the brakes but just pressing the brake all the way down the vsc track off light comes on. if i shut the truck off the light goes off but even if not moving now if i press the brake all the way down the light will come on. doing my research online i notice the 2003 version had a recall for the same or similar issue but this year has yet to be on that list.

While i was traveling on the highway at 70 mph, the right front brake locked up momentarily and lurched the vehicle, the vsc and traction control light started flashing and a warning buzzer went off. after looking into things, there are known issues with the 2001 and 2002 toyota sequoia that cause this exact thing to happen to plenty of other people. i understand that there has already been an evaluation done on this matter and it was ruled that the severity of the issue does not warrant a recall. why there is no recall being issued on the multiple failure points in the vehicle's system and people are required to spend thousands of dollars in repairs for parts and labor when the manufacturer's design didn't last? i purchased this vehicle for my father to feel more safe in, and that is the last thing that he feels while driving it. i am now required to drive our affected vehicle and have to be constantly paying attention so that the abs system doesn't shoot me into another vehicle.

The vehicle stabilization control turns itself on at random times while driving. has no correlation to driving conditions, type of roadway, or speed vehicle is moving. there is a beep and then a pull on the steering while a loud grinding noise and sensation occurs. it has gotten so bad, the car is not driveable because you cannot stop. mechanic has tried to repair but is unable to root the cause. the last time was so bad, my husband thought he was going to crash on the highway exit ramp.

Was driving straight on a city street with no adverse weather conditions (rain, wet road, etc.) had accelerated up to about 35mph when suddenly the trac off, vsc, and skid lights illuminated (possibly flashing) and a warning beeping sound went off. there was a loud grinding metal on metal sound and the car was shuttering (vibrating). i immediately begin to depress the breaks, and while the car did begin to slow further than it already was, i did not feel like i could have come to a complete stop as if i had total control of the breaks. i looked ahead to see where i could pull into to get off the road when the lights/warning sound went off and the vehicle resumed normal operation. this was after about 5-10 seconds. i drove for a couple of minutes to a gas station to get gas. the vehicle seemed fine. i was only about 5 more minutes to home so i continued driving. during that 5 minute drive it happened a second time. the exact same behavior, i was already slowing down approaching a red light and was traveling probably 15-20mph when it happened. after about 5 seconds the behavior stopped and the vehicle resumed normal operation. i was only about 30 seconds from home. continued home and haven't driven the vehicle since. this is a major safety issue to have your break system activate uncontrollable. it was terrifying at 35 mph, i can't image what might happen at 65mph. a few seconds of research shows hundreds of other complaints of the same problem. some people have reported pulling the fuse for the abs system to disable it, because not having it is safer than your breaking system uncontrollably going off on you. this needs to be recalled by the manufacturer and fixed before there is a fatal accident!

Twice, once in nov. 2019 and again n mar,.2020, the electronic skid control has engaged without warning and without reason, causing me to nearly lose control of the car. both occasions occurred on interstate 40 near raleigh , nc. the weather was clear and the road conditions were dry, solid (no sand or gravel) surface. when the system engaged at approximately 65 mph, the vehicle was pulled to the right nearly uncontrollably, the abs system engaged (grinding metal-on-metal sound0, and the engine speed was reduced. in addition, the trac and vsc icons lit up on the dash and the re was a beeping sound. this is a dangerous situation. had there been a vehicle in the lane to my right, i could not have avoided hitting them. fortunately, no other vehicles were involved and there was no accident, but this was purely luck. after the first event i took my vehicle to mark jacobson toyota in durham, nc on nov 14, 2019 ( i have the service receipt.) they stated that they "could not reproduce the problem" and said that they did a "zero point calibration." i have not had the vehicle serviced after the second episode since it happened just yesterday. a survey of the internet reveals multiple other first generation sequoia owners reporting the same thing, but there is no reported solution to the problem. the only "fix" that works consistently is to remove the abs system fuse; hardly a solution, since it doesn't make sense to me to disable a critical automotive safety system. nevertheless, given the severity of the problem with the abs system energized, i can understand that disabling the abs system is the lesser of two evils. i would be grateful for you help in finding a safe solution to this dangerous situation.

Corrosion on chassis

While driving into my driveway, on the freeway or on city roads, i suddenly hear beeping sound, grinding noise, momentary deceleration and then the vsc off and vsc trac lights in the instrument panel turns on. sometimes this happens when the vehicle is idling and stationary. i am afraid that i might get into an accident because of the sudden deceleration especially when i am driving on the freeway on the way to the office 5 days a week. the local toyota dealership told me that there was a recall for this covering 2003 sequoia models but did not include 2001 sequoia models. i believe that toyota should include 2001 models in the recall before people get into accidents because of this problem.

Toyota rust issue on my 2001 toyota sequoia r5. my vehicle was originally used to transport children to and from practices and games twice a week. this past summer, i started driving it daily. i took my vehicle in for service because i kept hearing a knocking and my engine light was on. after taking it to the mechanic, we discovered it was an o2 sensor causing the engine light on, but also noticed extreme rust on the entire frame. the mechanic determined the vehicle was unsafe and recommended the entire frame be replaced as that knocking would cause the front half of the vehicle to separate from the back half and cause a serious issue. after talking to toyota body shop, service department and a mechanic, i learned of a campaign that toyota had issued. toyota issued the campaign due to severe rust of its toyota tundra but failed to offer the same coverage for toyota sequoia issued for 2001. the campaign that was issued was for 2005-2008 sequoia, however my toyota was made in 2001. currently, my vehicle which transports my family, including young children has to sit until i can find $15,000-$17,500 to have it fixed by a toyota dealership. at this point, i can not afford this, especially for a vehicle i purchased used last year. my mechanic and toyota has deemed this vehicle unsafe. i’m requesting to have toyota replace and fix the entire frame or buy the vehicle back from me so that i can purchase another vehicle that’s safe, reliable and specious for my family. i would hope to have this issue expedited so i can continue transporting my family safely.

Toyota rust issue on my 2001 toyota sequoia v8 sr5. used to transport friends and family and children, but no longer safe due to excessive rust and inability to control the vehicle when slowing at higher speeds. vehicle veers to right and left uncontrollably. today, i almost sideswiped another vehicle on the highway. i was going around 60 mph and slowed to exit and almost lost control of my vehicle and ended up in a ditch. i took it to a mechanic and was told the vehicle is unsafe to lift due to excessive rust. recommended to have the frame replaced, but that's well beyond the cost i'm willing to pay. research tells me that this is a consistent problem for these vehicles and toyota should do something about it -- if not pay to have new frames done or reimburse people for the many who have these issues. this vehicle has only 154,000 miles and is otherwise in immaculate shape and condition due to proper maintenance. this problem should be resolved quickly by toyota. i no longer feel safe driving this vehicle for the reasons i've mentioned. excessive rust and inability to control a vehicle is not something i should have to deal with on a vehicle that has low miles for the make/model, and has been meticulously maintained. please expedite so i can recover financially from this or have a vehicle that i can feel safe using again with my friends and family.

Came rusted apart and in safe to drive the frame was coated in 2013 at fannon toyota in ashland kentucky this dealership was closed by the fbi for cheating people on paying for sold cars

Purchased vehicle in 2004. complied with a toyota inspection for possible rust on frame in 2012 and had vehicle sprayed with undercoating in 2013 (per toyota instructions). toyota knew there was a problem. by 2015 frame was still rusting and by 2018 rust is so bad that car will not pass inspection and being told frame is "conpletely rusted out" and "not safe to drive" by mechanics. now scared to drive the vehicle and worried about the safety of myself and family as frame may collapse or components come off at any moment. toyota refuses to take responsibility for the defect in sequoia and tacoma vehicles with this problem. problem is widespread. someone is going to die as a result when a massive frame failure happens while driving. please assist with pressure on toyota to fix this problem.

My vehicle has significant frame rust throughout. in some areas, the rust has gone all the way through the frame and large chucks/flakes of rust are falling off. in addition, there is rust coming through the weld seams in many locations.

One owner vehicle when i purchased january 2015. was serviced at local toyota and never said any issues with frame before the deadline to have frame replaced. after i purchased my machanic noticed the rusty frame and toyota said after the deadline to get fixed but no one at toyota said it was that bad. it continued to get worse and many other people with this vehicle are having the same issue. it now won’t pass inspection b/c the frame is falling apart. this is my daily driver and should not have pieces of the frame crumbling apart. the rearend is about to fall out. this is a major safety issue known with a lot of these vehicles!!

The traction control pulls the vehicle to the right at any speed. i almost crashed today.

Second time this left tire has came off while driving it's happened once on drivers side cvs joint ball joints and spindle is messed up nothing was hit wasn't driving crazy tire just came off it's kerps being on going issue

Tsc off and tsc trac warning lights come on and abs system actuates while in motion.

While driving the vehicle the brakes where applying themselves, vehicle started shaking and vibrating and slowing down and the vsc trac lights came on. it scared me and i almost had a panic attack. i pulled off taylor road(city street) and turned the car off and checked to see if i had a flat tire. i restarted to car and the lights remain on and i took the car home. my wife is now scared to drive it.

Driving down the road trac, vsc trac lights come on and the vehicle breaks hard and jerks the steering wheel to the right.

Accelerating onto highway the car made grinding noise and pulled to left as well as suddenl braking. it was almost a disaster but car in next lane veered away and i pulled onto shoulder. i had been told the yaw sensor needed to be replaced but was not available anywhere. when i looked online i saw nhtsa did not feel it was a dangerous failure, but it read as more of an inconvenient problem so i was comfortable trusting them and drove it after the dealer had said it couldn’t get the part. why was toyota able to declare a part obsolete that obviously is important to my safely operating the vehicle? how can. the nhtsa possibly think this is not a safety issue?

The frame is totally rusted and the campaign is past the deadline it has not broke yet but i'm afraid to drive it also.

Driving 45mph on straight road the vehicle vsc engaged pulling hard to the right and decelerating quickly. i pulled over, called dealership and was told to drive it the 2 miles to dealership. within 100’ of dealership i crossed intersection and car suddenly decelerated, engaged the assistance again and i was almost struck by truck that swerved and almost hit pedestrian. dealer said it was a yaw steering sensor. part was unobtainable or possible within 8 weeks, and no after market parts available. mechanic recommended vehicle not be driven. toyota declared part obsolete. i researched and found this was already at the nhtsa attention but that they closed the investigation. how is this acceptable?

Our 2001 toyota sequoia had a limited service campaign recall in 2013-2014 for severe rust problems in the frame. we took it to the dealer we bought it from. they either would replace the frame or just under coat the frame. they told us we only needed the undercoating - not to replace the frame. now the frame is completely rusted out. my understanding is that toyota did a recall for the same problem in newer cars (i believe 2005-2008), but will not do anything for later model cars, yet it is exactly the same rust issue. toyota was able to undercoat the frames, which did not fix the problem, rather than replacing the entire frame, which was much more expensive for them. this same problem also occurred with the toyota tacoma trucks.

Driver side lower ball joint failure. replaced ball joint september 25 2017 with o'reilly auto parts "master pro" part number k90262. part failed after exiting highway at the top of off ramp. speed at failure approximately 5 mph. speed 10 seconds earlier approximately 70 mph.

I put my car in park and left it running exited the car open the back door and walked behind the car and then the car began rolling backwards until it ran into a wall after i had already removed items from the back door and walked behind the car

When driving at a speed anywhere from 10 to 60 mph, the skid control light and vsc trac can go off; alarm sounds...vehicle shake and grinding coming from brakes. brakes and do not work well when this occurs. this can happen at any time. it is now occurring very frequently. the only way to stop it is to shut the car off.... and restart the vehicle.

I am the original owner. the ball joints have failed on both sides, with the wheels falling off while driving. at speed, my family would have been killed -twice! the wheels have fallen off twice. i have kept this vehicle in excellent repair. i have owned 4 toyotas and currently own three. ball joints should not fall apart under any circumstances. toyota has a recall for this problem back to 2004. however, they refused to stand by me on this, even after i paid over $2200 for the last repair. this is a dangerous situation for all sequoias prior to 2004. i can probably get a photo of the wheel off of the car where it skidded to a stop.

Frame rusted out and needed extensive repairs. class action suit by toyota admitted problems but excluded my model year. they recalled my car in 2012 but treated frame and denied liability when it completely rusted out. i have paid over $15,000 in repairs related to this rust.

I am hearing a rattling sound that sounds as if it is coming from the transfer case. i had recently (10 days) replaced all the shocks with bilstein and replaced the tires with pirelli atr p265/76r-16. the problem appears more pronounced in a turn and over more rough road (nothing crazy, asphalt highway). i do not notice the sound at highway speeds. i suspect that this condition may be associated with the atc or vsc system. i tried to disconnect the vsc system however i still would occasionally get the noise. this is similar to a problem i had 6 years ago: while in motion, entering a downhill turn, the vehicle began to shake uncontrollably. my first thought was that the entire wheel assembly was shearing off. the condition was more common in a turn, but could be induced in a bump. i had recently installed new tires and a suspension so the dealership suggested that the slightly oversized tire (p265/75r-16) was he cause. i replaced the brand new pirelli tires with the factory size michellin's however the problem continued. i had the vehicle re-inspected and the technicians stated that the problem was a worn rack & pinion assembly. i paid to have a new assembly installed; though the vehicle was supposed to have been test driven it exhibited the same symptoms when i drove it. after returning to the dealer i had the head mechanic test drive with me; he stated that this was a normal vsc operating condition. i insisted to speak with someone higher up and happened to connect with a toyota factory engineer from japan. after a test drive he concluded the problem was probably something in the vsc system. after further inspection they discovered a sensor was bad. i had to pay for this repair as well. now, i am beginning to have the same problems, coincidentally, after a tire replacement using a pirelli p265-75r-16 and new bilstein shocks.

Traction control malfunction. when in motion the car engages the brakes for no reason, intermittently applying the brakes causing the car to pull & swerve, and shudder. this happens when going straight, turning, or just driving down the road.

While driving down the road about 30-45 mph the vehicle suddenly jerked to the left as if someone else turned the steering wheel. if i hadn't moved fast it would have been a major accident in the neighboring lane. there was a beep at the same time and the trac light and vsc trac light went on. upon further testing the yaw rate sensor had a fail code of c1234 and the code c1363 booster pedal force switch vault was also affected. our yaw rate sensor needed replacing. i hear a recall is in the works for this. if ao i want a refund please. it was very scary and dangerous.

While driving on dry roads, the vsc anti-slip comes on and starts braking, occassionally causing the vehicle to pull to one side, and engages the abs which makes the car vibrate and makes the driver question whether the brakes work or not.

Regardless of speed a warning bell will sound, several instrument lights come on and the brakes activate causing the vehicle to pull to the right. i've experienced this numerous times with seemingly no common denominator. neither speed nor steering input seem to be the trigger for this. i've taken it to my local toyota dealership with no satisfaction and contacted toyota of america customer service with no satisfaction.

The vsc trac, vsc off, brake and abs lights came on and are stay on until the engine is shut down. sometimes the lights come on as soon as startup. sometimes when idling. suspension is very stiff, and steering seems affected as well as engine seems to lug when driving and the lights come on.

Airbag light was flashing mechanic determined the code to was b0132 short in pt squib right circuit ground. toyota dealer determined the cause was a mechanical failure in the right seat belt assembly in the passenger side. once that was replaced, the error persisted and determined that the passenger side sensor also has to be replaced. airbag sensor failure is common in many toyota models. however, toyota said that the 2001 sequoia is not in the recall list.

Toyota 2001 sequoia frame rot may 20th, i was driving with, my daughter. the car shook back and forth. i drove to our mechanic. they called saying the frame was horribly rusted and was not drivable. said it was a miracle myself and child were not in a devastating, catastrophic, deadly situation that day. toyota refuses to do anything about it.

When operating at speed, the vehicle will suddenly shutter briefly, and pull to right. seemingly a wheel locked up. control of steering is lost. vsc light comes on, and cannot be rest until restating the engine.

Right front brake locks up without warning and anti skid light and alarm come on. after a few seconds the vcs trac light and the vcs off light comes on and stays on and car drives fine until its turned of then this happens again .

Warning lights on the dash board come on periodically for no apparent reason. i maintain the car properly with regular oil changes and manufacturer recommended service. they go off on their own. my mechanic has no idea what causes this. it happens standing still, in motion or just by starting the vehicle.

Tuesday, november 10, 2015, i was driving down interstate 37 toward corpus christi, tx, and out of the blue my well maintained vehicle had a hard shake/shimmy in the rear end. it rocked my rearend left to right. very scary. luckily i had both hands on the wheel. the traction control sensor went off. i braked, thinking maybe i had had a tire go flat quickly. very scary at 75 mph. also very lucky that not semi's or vehicles were near me. i turned the sequoia off and got out to check the tires. there was no problem. i got back in and restarted the vehicle, the traction control lights had gone off, so i started to accelerate back into traffic...and the sequoia went crazy again, rear end shaking, traction control lights going off. it was 8 pm, dark. i was too scared to try driving again, so i called for a tow. i have done some research on similar problems and found there were many. some people say it is an electronic control sensor. each wheel has one and maybe one went out causing that wheel to rotate differently from the others, jerking the car around. this is very dangerous! i had been in san antonio, tx rush hour traffic just 3 hours before and had this jerking that caused swerving happened on the downtown highways, someone could have been killed. people should be warned and toyota should recall vehicles affected, because from my research, there are a lot of affected sequoias.

While traveling 74-75mph in my 2001 toyota sequoia on a dry highway passing a slower semi-truck on a straightaway, there was a sudden loud grinding noise, the vsc and traction control lights flashed followed by a series of high-pitched beeps. the suv lost partial control, automatically slowing a little as it pulled slightly to the right, scarily close to the big rig. however, the scariest part was that driver input controlled nothing for several seconds. i pulled to the side of the highway. the drivers manual said it was safe to continue driving the vehicle. this happened 3 other times on the remaining 700 miles of my trip. each time after an incident the suv did fine as long as the "vsc and traction control off" lights were on. but after the vehicle stopped, they would reset and turn off. the problem would occur again and the lights would turn back on. toyota claimed no responsibility. they replaced the skid control computer at a cost to me of $1123.36. i have not driven enough miles to see if this solved the problem. a simple internet search showed 23 pages of 2001 sequoia owners with the exact same problem and even a recall for 2003 models with the same safety defect. please investigate this problem before there are injuries or fatalities.

While driving on a neighborhood street the vehicle with no warning applied full braking to the right front wheel causing the tire to lock up. at the same time 2 skid control lights came on the dash along with a loud warning buzzer for around 5 seconds. dry pavement in arizona. vehicle swerved hard and had to oversteer to control it! this has done it 9 times now. it has happened every time! speed is not a factor. weather is not a factor. if the overide button for the traction control is engaged on not is not a factor. today (9-19-2015) was the last straw. in 3 lanes of traffic, speed 45, it came on. cars on both sides the did its thing! i almost hit the car to the right of me. i am now parking it until i am contacted by someone at the nhtsa or toyota. i am holder of a cdl license of over 40 years. this is the most dangerous thing i have ever seen a vehicle do! i understand there is no recall! help!

The vehicle skid control randomly engages for no reason. it causes lost of power and braking, causing steering to be very difficult.

Started with both vsc and trac lights on. in both warm and colder temperatures, the car abs engages. feels like driving over gravel. car pulls to one side or another, and braking seems almost impossible. this became more and more common. it started once every couple of months, to almost every trip. toyota read codes and stated that it was yaw rate sensor that needed to be replaced. over a cost of $1800. we changes it and the car acted normally for 1 day. a day later the lights came back on and the skidding occurred again. even after replacing the yaw rate sensor and performing a 0-point calibration, they read the codes, and showed the following: c0371 yaw rate sensor output signal malfunction c1208 steering position sensor output signal malfunction c1234 malfunction in yaw rate sensor c1271 low output voltage of right front speed sensor c1272 low output voltage of left front speed sensor c1273 low output voltage of right rear speed sensor c1274 low output voltage of left rear speed sensor c1275 abnormal change in output voltage of right front speed sensor c1276 abnormal change in output voltage of left front speed sensor c1277 abnormal change in output voltage of right rear speed sensor c1278 abnormal change in output voltage of left rear speed sensor c1279 deceleration sensor is faulty c1281 master cylinder pressure sensor output signal is faulty they estimated that the cost of repairing all of these sensors was approx $4500. the likelihood that all of these sensors gave out at the same time, to me is highly unlikely. there has been numerous complaints about this car's braking system and this seems to be an exploit of yet another shortcoming of this car. currently if the car sits idling for more than 10 mins, the vsc and trac lights come on regardless of temperature outside.

Street driving, clear day and car dash board starts to alarm. dashboard lights for vsc, antilock brakes goes haywire. horrible grinding noise and vibration felt through the brake pedal, with loss of power, and pull to the right all simultaneously happening. alarm bells all going off in the car. it is very loud noise for all occupants. terrifying occurrence with loss of brakes and power. first event lasted approximately 20 seconds. pulled over and the car seemed fine. this has been intermittent but occurred after car was warm and occurs more frequently when its is warmer outside as well. now, 16 mos later, this happens all the time and toyota dealer says there is nothing wrong with car and cannot diagnose the issue. it is a safety issue for sure. will have to park the car now since they cannot figure out what is wrong with it.

My 2001 sequoia was in an accident in november 2014. it was totaled but i decided to have it repaired as it was in great running condition prior to accident. it had been running fine to around may when the vsc went off while i was driving around a curve making me almost lose control of the car. the same thing would happen intermittently with a slight jerk of the car to the left. on june 25th there was a very violent jerk to the left while i was driving with my boys. took it to a dealership on 6/27/15 and was told it was the yaw rate sensor. dealership re-calibrated and it ran fine for 2 days. on 6/29/15 there was another violent jerk of the truck with the vsc lights coming on. i called the dealership and they instructed me to bring it back in. took truck in on 6/30/15 and was told i would need to repair the yaw rate sensor since the recalibration did not work. i was given an estimate of $746.29 for replacement and this was taking into account the $108 i spent on 6/27/15. told the repairman i would investigate further and would get back with him. as i was pulling out of the dealership going less than 5 mph, the truck jerked violently again almost slamming me into the car in the left lane. with the high mileage of the truck i do not want to spend an absorbent amount of money for repairs. as these sensors have reportedly had reports of multiple malfunctions in the past based on my research, i am not even sure that having it replaced would even fix the problem and if it did, would i be faced with the same problem a few months down the road when the new sensor goes bad. i can not believe that toyota or the government would allow this type of malfunction which is life-threatening to go on unresolved. is it really going to take the loss of lives as in the case of the airbags before something is done? help!

My 2001 toyota sequoia violently experienced a vsc trac error when driving next to a semi on the freeway. it almost pulled my car into the semi, and then off the road as the wheel jerked, brakes and engine response cut significantly. this highway issue happened last month, and just this week, the problem has become more frequent, occurring on neighborhood streets with absolutely no triggers. the steering wheel sometime shakes, and sometime pulls suddenly. it occurs sometimes during a slow turn, but is also happening just driving at 25 miles an hour down a straight road.....updated 11/13/15 *bf updated 12/28/2015*js

Was driving 60mph & car had loud noise from under car. dealer says it might be skid control module or yaw control? it is dangerous to drive but dealer can not tell me if repair will work. might be a different sensor. when this occurs, i can turn off engine & retart, then drive again. often, the vsc lights stay light up on dashboard. dealer put computer on car for locating repair codes. but dealer is still not sure what will fix vehicle

Was driving through town at about 50mph when the whole car started to sway back and forth. we immediately called my maintenance guy at midas and drove it over. turns out the entire frame rusted and rotted through from the inside out. we had it thoroughly checked out by a couple of people last year before putting money into fixing it up and keeping it for my son to drive. it checked out fine. nobody could tell it was rotting from the inside out. if the frame had fallen apart 4 days earlier, my son and i would have been severely injured, as he drove it for 2 hrs around the highway. we were told that if it had fallen apart around a turn on the interstate or on an off ramp, it would have flipped over. i don't know how it didn't happen then, but am grateful it didn't while he was driving. the service manager at midas has said he has never seen anything like it in all his years working on cars. when i called toyota about the problem and knowing that online we have read many stories of the same problem, they stonewalled me and told me there was nothing they could do. i am truly concerned for anyone else driving one of these sequoias and not knowing that it could fall apart at any time. the rest of the vehicle is in amazing shape, and it is disappointing that toyota had not recalled these, as they did the tacomas several years ago. it is a very dangerous situation!

On september 12, 2012 i had my 2001 toyota sequoia with 170,334 miles serviced at prime toyota in west roxbury ma due to the recall for frame corrosion. it was determined by the manufacturer that the frame qualified for rust prevention coating which the dealership performed the application. on june 12, 2015 i had performed preventative maintenance on same vehicle now with 225,345 miles the inspection of frame revealed several sites of rust throughout the frame in some cases the rust has rotted through. i was advised since the manufacturer previously performed preventive measures in 2012 they are no longer liable and would not replace frame at their cost. hence my complaint for a fair resolution. i am aware this is a major issue with similar vehicles by the manufacturer. the attention to this matter is greatly appreciated.

Immediately after, not during, a very mild auto accident the driver and passenger airbags deployed without cause. they shattered the windshield and caused mild burns to my hands and forearms. from a complete stop, i pulled forward approximately 2 car lengths and the automobile in front of me stopped without warming or break lights. i had almost come to a complete stop before my front bumper tapped her rear bumper. my body did not even move when the two bumpers tapped each other. no damage was noticed on either bumper, not even a scratch. my windshield had to be replaced that day in order for me to drive home. i waited 5 hours for the repair man to come. i filled this on my auto insurance windshield policy and paid my $50 deductible. alfa insurance promptly raised my collision deductible from $250 to $500 and told me they would never replace another windshield. if the air bags had not shattered the windshield this would not have happened. i am so angry at toyota. no insurance claim was filled by the other driver since there was no damage. no ticket was given by the officer that came to the scene. the officer told me that the air bags should not have deployed and that he thought something was wrong. this is what caused me to investigate and found the air bag recall on the sequoia starting in 2002, but did not include 2001. i filled a malfunction report with toyota and they sent out an investigator. after 45 days i received a letter stating they could not find anything wrong with the sensors and denied the claim. i have not had the use of my seat belts, horn or air bags to provide a safe ride since january. i have had to drive through ice and snow with no protection for my four children or i. it is obvious toyota does not care about safety. *tr

2001 toyota sequoia was recalled due to corrosion of the frame. all parts such as the back plates for the brakes, tie rod ends, stabilizer bars, and many more attached had rust when it went into the shop. however, toyota did not care that the rust had spread. i could have wrecked several times due to the negligence of toyota. it has been costly and the car is not the same since the transfer of the frame. rust spreads as cancer and is as deadly when it is under your car. i will have to spend thousands of dollars to ensure the safety of my family. *tr

The traction control on my 01 sequoia comes on without warning at around 10 mph . this has caused several close calls to accidents. i took it to a local dealer who asks me to keep it over night because they couldn't figure out what the problem. the next day they call me and tell more that the skid control ecu and the translate ecu are malfunctioning. they tell me because if the year and mileage of my vehicle to replace them it would be at my cost $2500 if my cost. how can they tell you that something then manufacture is faulty then try to charge me to replace it. now i am forced to drive an unsafe vehicle with four children as i commute daily because i cannot afford the repair or to buy a new vehicle. *tr

I barely tapped thr back of an old toyota corolla and at a low speed where no damage was done to either vehicle beside mine when the airbags unnecessarily deployed and shattered my windshield. when i took it to my body shop guy he said there was no way the airbags should've deployed he had checked my sensors and they had not been touched. about a month ago i took my car to my local toyota dealership for someone to come up from i believe atlanta and inspect my car. i never could get a response from him. testerday i called my local toyota inquiring about my airbags problem and they said yours were recalled new ones are here bring your car here in the morning and it'll take about three hours to fix. i was excited to finally get somewhere with this issue... this morning i take my car up there and they tell me that it wasnt recalled and to call the guy who cane down and inspected it. i am not happy with the way this is being handled and how no one will take responsibility for this defect and fix it. *tr

On multiple occasions, my 2001 toyota sequoia has shown random activation of the vehicle stability control system at highway speeds on dry, smooth pavement. each incident the same thing happens: the activation of a brief audible warning beep, the vsc indicator light flashes along with the slippery surface light (two squiggly lines) and the vehicle suddenly begins randomly applying hard abs braking to the right front wheel, accompanied with a loud grinding noise that sounds like it coming from the braking system. the brakes feel as if they are pulsating during each of these incidents, it is almost impossible to control the vehicle. it jerks and swerves from side to side and shakes violently. the only way to regain control is to reduce the speed and pull to the side of the road as quickly and safely as possible. the lights stay on until the vehicle is cut off. once the car is turned off the lights will go out. after the car sits for about 30 minutes or more or over night the lights will no longer be lgo out. i have had the truck diagnosed with the yaw rate censor code by one repair shop and one autoparts store. over the past year, this serious problem has recurred at least four times without warning and there is not a predictable set of circumstances that seems to cause an occurrence. my wife now refuses to drive this vehicle and i have dramatically reduced the usage this suv for fear that another incident may result in a serious accident!!! it is a very frightening experience for me and my family. i have 98,200 mile on the vehicle. *tr

At highway speed going down hill fully loaded at night in sierra with temps in low 30s and no snow in the area where the incident happened, my 01 toy sequoia pulled to the left within seconds both trac off/vsc trac lights came on. all of my mud and snow tires have good tread. luckily, i had both hands firmly on the steering wheel when it happened. able to get home safely at normal highway speed. these lights are still on until to date (1/17/16) because i have not taken in to toy dealerships; guess many third parties don't want to mess around with this issue. many complaints have been posted in regards to vsc issue. toy need to recall this model now. *tr

While driving at 60 mph the vehicle pulled sharply to the right and its trac/vcs control lights began to blink and the warning sound came on as well. the vehicle made a grinding sound and i pulled over to the side of the road. i shut the car off and waited a few minutes. i turned on the vehicle and the indicator lights were off and it drove normal. this same incident continues to happen even after i took it in to get diagnosed. i was told by a toyota technician that he could not find the problem. *tr

Vsc trac, vsc off, trac, emergency brake & abs lights are all illuminated. seems like every sequoia 2001 - 2005 has this problem. after lots of research it seems like it's a fault with the vsc computer and ecu computer which dealers want $2000 and up! these malfunctions in computers affect the vehicles abs brakes, and stability control system which poses a threat to safety of driver and passengers. *tr

Vehicle's traction control system malfunctioned while driving on dry flat pavement. skid light and sound came on followed by vsc and trac control lights. vehicle pulled hard to the right, made loud grinding noise, and was extremely difficult to control steering and braking. this continued for approximately one minute, stopped, and then did it again. this is a very dangerous situation which could potentially lead to fatal accident if it occurs at higher speeds. it happened few times, took it to dealer can not find issue but appears to be a very common problem with this make/model. i would like to see a recall. *tr

Our vehicle has a squeak and cracking sound which is very scary when riding in this truck.my husband was informed by a toyota technician that there had been a recall on this vehicle for under carriage rust/corrosion which could lead to possible frame damage. on 9/22 we called our local toyota dealership, gave the vin and was told their is no recall, & advised to notify toyota if we wanted to pursue this issue. so we immediately called toyota & rec'd a case #, and was informed the issue was the under carriage which was rusting and the corrosion was causing frame damage due to the salt and other elements on roads for ice & snow on 9/23 we rec'd a call informing us that the "safety campaign" ended on 7/29, notifications went out to first time owners and or dmv current owners. my husband & i have been registered owners of this vehicle since 9/26/07. we were not notified of this safety campaign which poses a safety hazard and have been told that our state of md is a state in which this vehicle is effected by this recall/campaign. for the safety and lives of my family i am writing to have the "safety campaign" opened so that this vehicle will feel and sound safe to drive and the lives of my family will not be jeopardized every time we ride in this vehicle which most of the time is daily.why would we not adhere to a recall if we were notified? i don't understand how there is a cut-off date. i mean what happens after 7/29 the corrosion doesn't matter or the lives of those who own these vehicles don't matter? seeking help in maryland. *tr

While driving along at ~40mph, car jeered to the right and made a noise as if the anti-lock brakes were pumping on the right side of the vehicle. the vsc & trac lights came on. vehicle then drove normally until the ignition was turned off. once the vehicle was started, the same incident occurred repeatedly making it unsafe to operate. took vehicle to the toyota dealership and was told i needed a new yaw sensor - $558. *tr

Lower ball joint went bad. had it fixed three times fir the same issue and it still is not working right. i was told by automatic that it could be a manufacturer damage because the ball joints it should not keep wearing out. *tr

It feels like its slipping and the warning siren goes off, trac & vcs lights start flashing and vehicle starts grinding sounds like metal on metal and loose control of car, can't brake, can't steer just have to wait for it to pass as you are rolling away. very very scary - what if i was on a highway??? not a happy toyota owner right now!!!!there needs to be a recall on this, i see several complaints that sound just like mine on the internet and can't believe that toyota hasn't done anything about it - are they waiting for some fatalities to happen. this is my 1st toyota and i'm the original owner and up until now this has been an excellent vehicle to drive (14years). now i'm afraid for my life... *tr

All of a sudden a grinding noise from front of vehicle, anti skid beeping, vsc light popped on. very hard to steer and brakes not working well. happened repeatedly. pulled over, turned vehicle off. engine on, drove off, 5 miles later, all over again, but more severe. not safe at high speeds, more than 25 mph. this occurred in august, no snow, no rain, dry cement.

I own a toyota sequoia 2001 limited. like 6 months ago i experienced the problem the first time while driving on freeway around 60 mph uphill. svc-trac off lights came on and some noise this happened in dry perfect driving conditions. after that, some times the lights came on with out noise. after shutting engine off and turned on again all lights were gone. i scanned to see if any code was stored but nothing. until one day driving on main boulevard speed around 40 mph it happened again. this was the first time the car pulled me to the right and loud grinding noise happened at same time. this sound and shake of the vehicle last no more then 15 seconds. after that, it started to happen more often up to the time that it was happening every mile. the car was braking itself without warning, right front wheel and left rear wheel. i took it to the dealer they scanned and nothing, asked me if i could leave the car one more day. next day they call me to say that yaw rate sensor was faulty. i replaced, sensor plus labor was $ 800. i have not felt that problem again. toyota people seem they do not know what to do about this issue, but they know this is happening. at freeway speed this will cause a fatal accident. why there is no recall on this problem it is the big question. *tr

This vehicle has been recalled under a "limited service campaign" for excessive frame rust. vehicles for this campaign are being inspected and if they do not have significant frame perforation from rust, a rust resistant compound is being applied. for vehicles that do have significant frame perforation, failing the inspection, toyota is replacing the frame of the vehicle. my complaint is that while toyota is replacing the frame free of charge, they are not going to cover the costs of any component that breaks (due to significant rust) during the disassembly or reassembly, i.e. any rusted parts or even nuts and bolts that are not reusable. this is outrageous, it is their fault that many things will have to be removed when they otherwise wouldn't have to be, and i will be expected to pay for it? this treatment was confirmed by calling toyota customer care. i believe i will be looking at significant costs, which are unknown until they happen, at which point i will be forced to pay for it or be left with a partially assembled, undriveable vehicle due to faulty toyota parts. *tr

Bought my 2001 toyota sequoia 2 years ago (obviously used) and the vsc/trac lights have come on in the past but never really effected driving. they would go back off by themselves because the button on the dash didn't turn them off. today i went to drive it and noticed the lights were on again. as i'm driving, i'm noticing that the vehicle is acting like i'm driving on water (almost like i'm in 4x4 mode) and it's shaking bad because the roads are dry. my husband disconnected the battery and reattached. the lights were off and drove fine on the test drive. turned off vehicle and went to leave later, the lights were back on and it was doing the same thing. it keeps jerking and is very unsafe to drive. looked for a toyota recall but found nothing except a load of complaints online about this very same problem on this vehicle. it looks like it takes a lot of money to get repaired and when you're working just to pay your bills and support your family, you definitely don't have an extra $2000 laying around to fix something that should be under a recall. not even sure what to do now since i still owe another year on this vehicle. *js

Three (3) cooper tire failures, discoverer h/t, 265/70r16, dot number utc2c5t2305. 9 oct 2013, took vehicle in for regular maintenance. received courtesy inspection that included tire tread/condition check. checks were good with outer/inner tread depth of 8/5, 7/5, 8/8, 8/8. tires rotated and front end alignment accomplished due to uneven wear on front tires. on nov 4, 2013, 400 miles of interstate driving after 9 oct 2013 tire rotation/front end alignment, 7/5 tire tread separated on interstate damaging left rear wheel well, left rear quarter panel and rear bumper ($2500 damage). 11 april 2014, approx 2500 miles after 9 oct 2013 tire rotation/front end alignment, 8/5 tire tread separated on interstate damaging right rear wheel well, right rear quarter panel, right rear door and rear bumper (approx $2000 damage). purchase 2 new tires for front, rotated both 8/8 tires to rear and had them inspected at tire dealer who said that there was no need to replace and that there was several thousand miles left of use. 10 may 2014, approx 3500 miles after 9 oct 2013 tire rotation/front end alignment, left rear 8/8 tire tread separated on interstate damaging left rear wheel well, fuel line, left rear quarter panel, left rear door, left running board, and rear bumper. *tr

I took my truck to the nearest dealer located near my home and i took my recall letter i must of sat there for 2 hours waiting for someone to speak to me about this recall issue but got the run around for 2 more hours finally a rep approached me and asked if i could come back another day. i requested a letter or some kind of document to verify my compliance with the letter i received but was denied. my spare tire fell off during this accident thank god no one was hurt. *tr

To whom it may concern, on may 24, 2014, i was traveling with my kids through interstate 15 south at approximately 65 miles per hour. my truck pulled me to the right in which i had to react fast and hold on to the steering wheel with both hands. vsc-trac off light turned on with a beeping noise. i tried to break and my truck lost controlled and began making a grinding metal noise. i took my foot off the break and steered straight. this lasted about 10 seconds. i had my kids with me. if i hadn't reacted fast, we were going to be thrown off the freeway. i took it in to the mechanic and the computer scanner showed-no active faults. vsc- is the vehicle stability control. the vsc auto engages and disengages. there's a button that turns off and off in the middle of the dashboard. i never touch this button. this vsc lights off and on and pulls the car without a warning. i called the dealership in escondido and spoke to mike in the service department. he said he's never heard anybody complain about this. i found out that there's a recall in the 2003 toyota sequoia. my truck has 189000 miles. i bought this car for safety for my children and it is very scary to have this happen to us. i have been researching this and there's other people having this happen to them but toyota doesn't want to do a recall on this safety issue. there is a recall on the frame of 2001 toyota sequoia. please assist us with this safety problem. *tr

Driving into little rock arkansas dry warm conditions and at 70 mph my car vibrated loudly and veered to the right hard. pulled over on side of highway and trac and abs lights came on and did not go back off until i shut the car off only to come back on after 5 miles down the road. this could have been bad if i would have been in another lane with another car beside me. very scary!! don't know what to do i have owed this car since it had 64000 miles when i bought it no problems at all. i seen a recall for the 2003 year models for the same problems,but nothing for my year model. help me get my suv fixed. i want to trust it again. *tr

Toyota sent me a letter asking me to bring my 2001 toyota sequoia truck to a dealer near me to have my rusted frame replaced at no cost to me because they were having a service campaign for trucks like mine. after taking the truck there i got a call from the dealership telling me i had to pay almost $2300 for parts.i called toyota to complain but with no positive results. the dealer said it is not safe to drive the vehicle and yet toyota will not keep to their word of doing the repairs at no cost.i feel toyota needs to own up and fix a problem that was their fault to begin with. *js

Vsc light illumination/failures initially appeared at 42,000 miles, very intermittent and seemingly random. frequency increased after 75,000 miles; abs light appeared later. 1. vsc off light illuminated (variable speed control) initially at intermittent time while driving, now illuminated full-time. 2. vsc trac light illuminated (variable speed control) initially at intermittent time while driving, now illuminated full-time. 3. abs light illuminated (anti lock brakes) initially at intermittent time while driving, now illuminated full-time. abs now inoperable. tested to validate inoperable status - full brake lockup, no abs operation. variable speed control now inoperable. spun out twice recently in slow speed right hand off-camber turn on wet pavement.

While driving down the highway the skid control light will flash and engage causing the vehicle to pull violently to the right and slow the vehicle down. then after 1-10 seconds it will stop and the skid control light will stay on. it scares you every time it happens, most especially at high speeds. if you do not have a good grip on the wheel you will be in the other lane before you know whats happening. extremely dangerous. *tr

Vehicle had experienced intermittent stability/traction control trouble lights in cold weather. while driving in sub freezing weather on wet heavily salted nearly clear (possible slight slush from snow dusting) interstate along a straight smooth slight upgrade stretch, the vehicle without diver action (steering, braking, or acceleration) experienced a rear end swerve to the right and inability to control. result was leaving the right side of the roadway down a 25-30 foot embankment (no guardrail) and a vehicle roll (one time, ending up wheels down, still running). travel was at or below that of traffic. no other vehicles experienced difficulty on the same stretch of road. it is believed that a sudden random actuation of the stability/traction control system initiated the event. this appears to be a generic issue with the toyota system spanning several models and years.

After coming back from trip, me and my family were heading home (we were about 2 miles from home), and upon coming to a red light, i stepped the brake pedal on my 2001 toyota sequoia, and the car came to a complete stop; but when the green light traffic came on, and as soon as i let go of the brake pedal, and about to press the gas pedal, the car just stalled ( also with battery light on indication lit, check engine on, abs lit, vsc trac lit, vsc off lit, brake light indication lit, abs light). so, first thing i did is turn off the engine , put the car in the park gear ( at the same time my foot is on the brake pedal), but as soon as i turn on the engine, put the car in drive and let go of the brake pedal, the car stalled again. next thing i did is let 2 people push the car while in neutral to put the car in a safe place where there is no traffic, upon them pushing the car, they left, and the car was still running even no one pushing it, and came the scariest 20 seconds of my life, car made a loud annoying grinding sound, car still moving, even with emergency brake on, my foot on the brake, key removed from ignition, car placed in park, in other words i had no control of the car. after 20 seconds, the car came to a complete stop, and we got out of the car scared and shaking, i thought we were going to die that day, but thank god the car stopped, or maybe my kids angels helped avoided an accident. also good thing there was no heavy incoming traffic, there was 1 or 2 cars only in the way that stayed out of our way. i need help, toyota has to recall and fix it because is a safety issue and also it is the right thing to do, if not i will be reporting these to the better business bureau and the local state consumer agency. *tr

While driving on a smooth pavement the vsc/trac system engages for no reason. sounding off the internal chime and turning the vsc/trac lights on the dash. the abs system kicks in and grinds on the brakes. loss of steering is present as the vehicle pulls to one side. *tr

I was notified by toyota that my 2001 sequoia was part of a limited service campaign for 2001 to 2004 sequoias. certain of these sequoias experienced more than normalcorrosion to the vehicle frame. i took the car to molle toyota in kansas city for inspection. i was informed that my vehicle did have a hole in the frame and qualified for a frame replacement. pictures were taken. i was promised copies but have not received them. apparently tundra and the tacoma vehicles were also previously recalled for frame rust due to using inferior metal which rusted from the inside out and by the time it was visible it was too late to correct. specifically relevant is the fact that following an investigation by nhtsa in october 2009. toyota issued a regional recall that covered 110,000 2000-2003 toyota tundra vehicles. the sequoia and tundra are built using the same frame and may be built on the same assembly line, and probably use the same steel for the frame. why was the sequoia not accounted for in the previous inquires and recalls? dealerships must have known of the problem for the tundra and the sequoia vehicles. yet no one informed owners. no one inspected the sequoia. this is clear negligence. this was known since at least 2009. since that time i have put a lot of money into this vehicle. upon learning of the defect i explored the possibility of trading the vehicle in. i disclosed the frame problem as part of this. no dealer wanted the vehicle. the suggestion was to sell the vehicle myself. i find it particularly troubling that the molle toyota dealership actually suggested that it might be necessary for me to sign a waiver in order to take the vehicle out of the dealership. the waiver was to hold toyota harmless should something result as a result of the defect. i was shocked when in talking to the case manger assigned to my complaint she repeated this request. *tr

Last year my car while traveling at a speed of 50 mph just collapsed. my ball joints fell completely off. my the grace of god i wasn't killed because i was on the interstate. i have since had it repaired but not by a toyota dealer. at the time as now, all my lights were lit vsc trac, abs etc. i have had this problem throughout having this toyota and it has been very costly. now as we speak my car is at a dealer and i can only imagine they will tell me it's the faulty computer chip. i will also have them check for rust since i'm hearing of all these cases of rust. my car has been in tip top shape due to my husbands knowledge of cars. however, some of these reports appear to be incidents beyond our control. i'm lucky to be alive. i guess if i had been killed toyota would still be denying their product is faulty. i would like toyota to step up and pay for some of these issues i've had and if my car needs this expensive computer chip..abs is engaging my brakes they pay for it. this is the second time i've made a report and i haven't heard anything from toyota... *tr

While driving forward from a stopped position on a flat, level, paved road with the outside temperature at 72, the vsc (vehicle skid control) activated and nearly pulled me into the lane next to me. there were no pot holes or anything in the road that would've caused it. it stopped after a few seconds and then again, about two minutes later at a 25mph speed , the system activated again and i had no control of the brakes or steering while the system was activating. the car is great shape, one-owner, well maintained and there seems to be a history with toyota and the vsc system. very dangerous situations that the vsc put me in. *tr

Frame rot and hole/perforation through frame found while inspecting the 2001 sequoia for the "limited service campaign c0d (specific 20 cold climate states only) - corrosion-resistant compound application to the vehicle's frame". dealer informed me that toyota would replace the frame for free but that i would have to pay $6,000 to replace suspension, brake lines and exhaust components removed in the process. dealer stated that they would not reuse the components removed as part of the frame replacement. these components are functioning today and do not need to be replaced. the only reason the dealer gave for the additional cost is that they would not re-install the existing parts. sounds like a bait and switch scam. toyota offers to inspect the car and perform a no-cost recall to fix a serious manufacturers defect for $6,000. there is no way to perform the recall without incurring the additional costs. *tr

Driving on highway and car increased speed applied brakes would not stop, taking off and car has no power. *tr

While i was driving the vsc trac light came on, the vehicle started grinding while i was pressing the gas and brakes. the vehicle felt as if it was loosing power, i almost lost control of the steering wheel because car was losing power and control. the abs light also came on and vehicle started shaking very badly. this happens several times while i'm driving vehicle. i have taken it to be serviced from the dealer but the problem still exists. i will talk with an attorney about these problems because i am very afraid of a serious accident while driving my wife and kids. *tr

Traveling on the freeway at a speed of 55 miles the vcs trac control light came on and the brakes were applied with out me hitting the breaks, i lost control of the steering for a slight second, the truck swerved to the left, it almost cause me to hit a car on the left of me on the freeway. once i turned the car off, the vcs trac lights turned off, then it happened again on the street at a lower speed of 45 mile the vcs trac light started to flash and the brakes were applied and the truck swerved to the left, the lights stayed on again until i turned off the truck. *tr

I have a 2001 toyota sequoia with 120,000 miles on it and on 3/3/13 i had a very bad incident happen with the vehicle stability control (vsc). the problem happened twice within less than a mile. i was driving on sunny day on a straightaway about 35 mph both times when out of nowhere the vsc light came on and the steering wheel started to shake violently, the brakes pedal felt like something had broken with it, and it would not allowing me to stop the vehicle. the car for lack of a better way to word it was acting like it was possessed. at this point i have very little control over the vehicle and i had to do something asap. i was able to pull off to the side of the road on a very steep downward bank. i was losing control of the vehicle and i was very lucky to have not been on a major highway. i had 2 adults and 4 children in the vehicle when this happened and i feel luck that there was no accident and no one was hurt or killed! i am now at the point that i?m scarred to drive my vehicle. think about this, what a horrible feeling to have to deal with and when will this happen again? so now i am at the point do i sell it because i don't trust it and pass on a problem to another person. *tr

This was the first incident: as i was driving then suddenly the truck started to beep and moves back and forth and made a braking sound. and i went into the side and hit a small post and the seat belt tighten. now my back has been hurting me since. and some lights were on. the vsc trac and trac off lights were on. then after that one i have been driving very careful but it will still do the same thing. the beep starts and the swirling back and forth. but i have been driving slower too so i don't get out of control. this is very scary. after the i turn off the truck the lights are not on. but the thing is that it just happens. i have no i idea when or what time. i hope i can get help on fixing this problem. thank you *tr

Vehicle frame failure due to excessive rust. frame recalled after we received a letter to have frame inspected. local dealer inspected and found it qualifies for recall and can be replaced, however, the manifold and catalyst, and timing belt, etc. likely will be damaged in frame replacement since they are rusted to frame. the quote to replace those items more than vehicle is worth--car is totaled due to failing parts and rust. we filed a complaint with toyota and we were politely told that only the frame is covered in recall. very disappointed that toyota will not give us any compensation toward another vehicle since this vehicle is now totaled in it's value (if exhaust system needs to be replaced in addition to frame). we are proceeding with replacement and will see whether the existing exhaust system can be salvaged. if it is damaged beyond repair, we have no other alternative but to replace the vehicle at our own expense. *tr

I own a 2001 toyota sequoia and experienced a loss of steering control on three separate occasions. the first incident occurred while driving through a shopping mall parking lot at 5 mph. our vehicle shuddered and swerved to the right while a buzzer went off & then the vsc and trac off lights illuminated. the next two incidents occurred over the next few days while driving on the highway between 20-25 mph. on both occasions our vehicle lost control and veered to the right before i was able to gain control of the vehicle. this is a serious life safety defect that has been acknowledged by toyota for the 2003 sequoia's and by the vast amount of complaints should extend to earlier models as well. i recently took our sequoia into a mechanic and their trouble shooting revealed that the skid control ecu would need to be replaced, costing over $3400. *tr

In nhtsa campaign id number: 09v444000, toyota recalled model year 2000-2003 tundra vehicles due to excessive corrosion of the rear cross member that may cause the separation of the spare tire. the 2000-2003 toyota sequoia vehicles share identical frame cross member and spare tire mounting arrangements in which excessive corrosion in the rear cross member and spare tire mounting location can cause separation of the spare tire stowed under the rear cargo load floor which would result in a road hazard. this separation of the spare tire or mounting bracket could cause a crash. also, corrosion of the rear cross member could affect the rear brake lines and the proportioning valve, resulting in diminished braking capability. any separation of the spare tire and/or diminished braking capability could increase the risk of crash to affected vehicle and/or a road hazard to those traveling nearby. *tr

Actually, this was not an "incident". rather it was me crawling under the truck to scrape some rust off of the frame. what i found was about a one foot long rusted "slit" in the frame. it did not look safe to me, so i took it to the toyota dealer to inspect. (cost me $25.) i was told that it was safe for now, but would soon not be safe. the toyota field specialist said there was nothing he could do. looking online, i see countless cases of rotting frames on this year sequoia. things i see online from other owners (using my words): "the frame is rusting from the inside out. it was made with either inferior material or bad coating. the tacoma (with the same frame) has been covered by toyota." lots of upset people out there! not sure what to do... don't feel right about selling it... don't feel safe driving it too much. please help! *tr

Wife was pulling off from a stoplight when the traction control system light (skidding car icon) and warning buzzer came on and the vehicle started making a loud grinding sound, vibrating, and pulling to the right. she pulled the vehicle over, turned it off, and called me to come swap vehicles with her. when i started the car, of course, the symptoms had gone away. several days later on a family trip, i was driving the vehicle on the interstate at 65-70 mph when the vehicle did the same thing she had described. we pulled over, the noise stopped, and then the vsc/trac and trac off came on. this should be a recall fix. too many vehicles have had this problem, over several production years (2003's actually have a recall for a similar issue). however, reading various forums has made me think toyota doesn't even know the root cause of this. but it's definitely a safety issue that needs to be checked out. *tr

Today driving at 40mph my 2001 sequoia suddenly jolted and brake with a terrible grinding noise, this while i was using the gas pedal! it was very scary and shocking that it could possibly do such an unsafe maneuver. my children & i were terrified as the beeping started and then a steady noise while the grinding persisted. i am so glad the car behind us did not plow into us, and still do not know how they did not. to everyone that has stated this: "people will be killed because of this", you are very correct. it is dangerous to have such a faulty system in a car on the road. we had is towed away, and frankly i know not what to do since reading all of these other incidents. even if we have it fixed, it sounds like it will not cease. i had this happen twice in the last 2 days, but thought i'd run over a pothole or something. today, it was smooth pavement and nice weather. we really need a recall to save lives! *tr

Vehicle's traction control system malfunctioned while driving on dry flat pavement. vsc and trac control lights came on, vehicle pulled hard to the right, made loud grinding noise, and was extremely difficult to control steering and braking. this continued for approximately one minute, stopped, and then did it again. this is a very dangerous situation which could potentially lead to fatal accident if it occurs at higher speeds. it happened with our children in the car and scared everyone. this is the second time it has happened to us, but appears to be a very common problem with this make/model. i would like to see a recall. *tr

Brought in car to have muffler checked out and my mechanic called me back after putting car on the lift. there were rust perforations the size of a football as well as openings along the whole frame. the mechanic told me it was unsafe to drive and that this was not normal wear for this vehicle. he was concerned that the drive train would fall through if we went over a big enough bump and cause an accident. the rust was abnormal and he said that it looked like it was rusting from the inside out of the frame. i called toyota to file a claim and they had me bring it to the local toyota dealer. they refused to send out a regional rep to look at it saying it was not under a recall of any kind. now my car is unsafe and worthless. the toyota corp. customer service told me to sell it for parts.... really??? they did nothing and offered no answers. please research this problem and get something done about it. does someone have to die to get the attention? you buy a toyota for its longevity and quality. i will never buy a toyota again. *tr

Two days ago, i happened to be on my way home on a back road and only going around 40 mph when my stability control light, vsc trac, and trac off light came on and my car started making a beeping noise and i could not control my vehicle. this is for a 2001 toyota sequoia. i have seen many complaints since on different forums about this same problem. what can be done about this problem? i am very disappointed with toyota and hope that there will be a recall on this problem or they could be facing some lawsuits if these kind of problems persist and someone gets injured or even killed because of negligence on toyota's part. as for me and my family, we have owned toyota vehicles for years, my great uncle was even asked to be in a toyota commercial because of the devotion our family has had to toyota. i really hope they do the right thing because there will be challenges made against their company if not. *tr

The vsc traction control system engages in the middle of driving. the car shakes profusely causing a loud beeping noise, jerk of the truck and acts as though it's not going to stop. toyota refuses to acknowledge the problem because the 2001 toy sequoia hasn't been included in the recall. i have taken the car to the dealership 5 times. no fix to date help!!! *tr

Recently, my 01 sequoia has been making a loud metal-like grinding noise coming from the front end of the car. sounded like it came from the engine or the tires. this caused the car to become unstable on the road and it was swerving, the vsc trac light and vsc off light flashed and beeped rapidly, and worst thing of all was that the brakes did not work either. the more i put pressure on the brakes, the more the metal grinding noise was intensified. felt like the engine was going to be dropped in the middle of the road or the tires were scraped to the bone. problem first happened in april, but thought it was nothing because as fast as it came out of nowhere, it quickly went away also. however, 2 weeks ago, my husband and my son were in my car and it happened again. this time it lasted longer and my husband had to try his best to control the vehicle because it was swerving and shaking so bad, and the loud grinding noise was back. we kept the car in the garage for a week in hopes that it will "go away." today, 5/16/12, as i'm driving at 50mph it happened again.thankfully, there were no cars behind me, and just a truck a little ways ahead of me. because i was driving at a speed of 55mph, it was very difficult to stop. i put pressure on my brakes to no avail because the more i tried to push the brakes, the louder the noise was and the more the car was shaking. this is one of the most terrifying events in my life because i saw that i was approaching the back of the truck fast and i couldn't stop, i tried to pull to the side but there were no room because the sides were just guard rails. at that point, i put more pressure on my brakes because i didn't wanna be killed or hurt anyone else, so my car finally started to slowed down. the scariest part was that i could not brake. the more i applied my brakes, the louder the noise, and the more the car was shaking.

I was driving on the highway slowing down in traffic and the truck started skidding on it's own, the vsc trac light and trac off light both came on while the car with the skid mark indicator light flashed and beeped, there was a noise coming from under the truck that sounded like something was lose. i stopped at the store and when i got back in the truck, the lights were off but a few minutes later, going only about 30 mph, it did it again and was louder and shook worse. i was scared and just tried to get home. it was too late to take to toyota but i did talk to a mechanic and will go to toyota in the am. *tr

2002 - vsc trac light came on, vehicle unexpectedly pulls to right, called dealer said okay to drive home . took to dealer didn't find anything wrong. vsc trac has continued to malfunction through the years, each time dealer reported nothing wrong. 2012- problem has worsen, trac light comes on everyday. vehicle either unexpectedly pulls too hard to right or shakes badly as though frontend is falling out from under the vehicle. *js

Recently had new tires installed, while accelerating up freeway on ramp i could feel power being taken away, looked down and skid control light was lit up. asked mechanic about it and recommended zero point calibration to rest sensors for steering yaw and pitch. after zpc vsc trac and vsc off lights were on. code pulled c1231 steering angle. zpc again. code and lights still, code will not clear with toyota intelligent 2 scanner. monitoring steering sensor with scanner show both positive and negative numbers with zero at wheels straight. mechanic want to change out spendy vsc cpu and translate cpu and says that is no guarantee to fix. i am driving it with lights one due to unable to pay $2k for something out of know where and no part physically broke to promote. in looking around i see this is not an isolated issue. *tr

Vehicle: toyota sequoia 2001 4wd ltd temperature: 87 degrees f conditions: sunny & clear - no rain/water present - no obvious slippery conditions surface: paved surface road accessories active: air conditioning was on & radio was on while traveling at approximately 35 mph in a straight line the traction control light illuminated (vehicle symbol that includes 3 wavy lines) and sounded an audible signal immediately followed by the "vsc trac" & "vsc off" lights illuminating. to memory, the accelerator pedal was being pressed as normal. when the above dashboard lights illuminated a negative sensation could be felt through the steering wheel, but the vehicle did not veer off course. next, the emergency flasher hazard light was turned on, the a/c & radio were turned off and the four main windows were lowered to their full down positions by the driver and the vehicle was driven to a side street approximately 1/8 mile ahead, stopped and parked. the driver kept the vehicle running. the vehicle was then inspected by the driver for signs of obvious mechanical failure. the brake, driveline and suspension components did not show any obvious signs of failure. the owner's manual was checked and it did not indicate that the vehicle could not be driven in the current state. the vehicle's a/c system was switched back on (the radio was left off) and the vehicle was then driven approximately 10 miles, parked and turned off. after approximately 4 hours of the vehicle being parked & not running the vehicle was restarted. the previous dashboard lights at first did not illuminate. after approximately 1/4 mile of driving the "vsc trac" & "vsc off" lights illuminated again upon depressing the brake pedal. vehicle was driven approximately 50 miles, parked and turned off. there were no unusual mechanical sensations felt or heard during either 10 or 50 mile drives. *tr

Was driving out my driveway, not going fast at all...turned on a major street and suddenly, a picture of the skidding car appeared and then the trac/vsc lights came on with a horrendous noise. took car to the local toyota dealership and of course they couldn't find anything wrong with it after relinquishing $100.00 diagnostic fee. the light and noise from the vsc engaging or disengaging is really loud and has happened every day since the initial issue. does this present a problem? i'm afraid to drive my car but is very much needed for work and recreational activities. i've searched online and it appears that this is an ongoing issue that toyota is aware of but fail to do a recall. *tr

My 2001 toyota sequoia lost all steering control while driving my boy to basketball practice. my mechanic had to replace the entire rack and pinion which was completely rusted out and leaking power steering fluid. he said the entire frame was completely rusted and probably not safe to drive. he also mentioned that he has seen several sequoias with the same rust issues but don't expect toyota to fix the problem even though they are in the process of replacing tundra and tacoma rusted frames. after visiting certain websites like edmond's i've learned this is a common problem with sequoia owners and that toyota is not resolving the issue. why has the nhtsa not addressed this problem? it's time to act on this problem and force toyota to replace these rotted frames. *tr

Vsc light was coming on intermittently. vehicle(sequoia) was still under warranty so the dealership replaced the skid control ecu. the vsc light started coming back on intermittently approximately one year later. since the vehicle was out of warranty toyota said it would cost approximately $2400 to fix. since the lights only came on intermittently without any other problems and i didn't have the money to spare i didn't get the repairs done. while having my rotors turned at the dealership the mechanic said they noticed the vsc light was on. they said they worked on my vehicle for 3 hrs(at no charge-just doing me a favor)) to try and remedy the vsc light problem. when i left the dealership i got on the highway and not 2 miles down the road the warning lights and abs lights were coming on, i started hearing warning beeps, the car started vibrating violently and pulled to the right. scared the heck out of me! i pulled over and had the car towed back to the dealership. of course the dealership said it was skid control ecu and would cost $2400 to fix the problem. i have taken excellent care of this car and would fix it if i didn't think it would happen again. because of necessity i have been driving the car and dealing with the daily scare but lately it has been getting so bad that i will probably have to trade it in before it causes an accident. *tr

Our 2001 sequoia will not pass inspection due to excessive rust on the frame. i drive a sequoia and my husband drives a tundra. we bought both our vehicles "new" from our local toyota dealership who does most if not all of the maintenance on them. this is the first time since we've owned the sequoia that rust has become an issue?! we did some research and found that many owners of the sequoia are reporting this very same issue which is similar to a tundra recall. the recall was for frame rust due to the use of inferior metal which caused rust from the inside out and by the time it becomes visible it's too late. it is a known fact that both these vehicles are built with the same frame. the recall should apply to any of toyota's vehicles if it is the same issue. we have also filed a claim with toyota. *tr

December 28, 2011, i brought my 2001, toyota sequoia in to be serviced for rear brakes and to get the oil changed. my certified mechanic called me at home and strongly suggested that i come in to see what he discovered while my vehicle was up on the lift. so i stopped in to take a look. he showed me extensive rust holes in the middle of the frame welds on both the passenger and driver's side. he also pointed out that the rear differential case has severe rust damage. he strongly urged me to stop driving the vehicle and stated that it is unsafe in its present condition and that he has never seen such extensive frame rust damage on a vehicle this well taken care of. the drive train, outer body, and interior are in mint condition. i also have always made it a point to power wash the salt (calcium chloride) off the under carriage after driving in the northeast after snow or ice storms, when salt is used on our roads. i contacted my local toyota dealership and they gave me the phone number to toyota headquarters. the end result was, they were sorry to hear that i had a rotted out frame and suggested that i get rid of the vehicle because there is currently no recall for the sequoias. although, after going online at the toyota forum i found out that they're are over 300 consumers with the same type of issue with their sequoia frames in our state, so i do not stand alone. i am floored that a company like toyota, that prides itself in being committed to safety does not care and will not take ownership when they knowingly used cheap japanese steel to build these faulty frames. i currently have three young children and this is my primary vehicle. i cannot afford to throw $8 k away (kelly blue book) on this vehicle. please help! in march 2010, toyota recalled 2001-03 tundras for significant frame rust, which is the same frame as the sequoia... very puzzling? *tr

Abs, trac control, and vsc light come on intermittently all at the same time. there is a total loss of abs and traction control - very scary on icy roads. problem comes and goes. cannot seem to get a fault code. based on the postings i see, this is a known problem. *tr

I took my vehicle in for an oil change and tire rotation and then received a call from the olathe toyota dealership indicating my vehicle was unfit to drive due to rust damage on the under-carriage. they indicated the transmission crossmembers has a 12-inch long section of rust and there are som small holes on the passenger side. the frame is weak and potentially unsafe. i understand toyota has recalled the 2000-2003 tundras and possibly tacomas for this rust damage. if i understand correctly, the sequoia is built on the same framework as the tundra so i would assume a recall on the sequoia's would be necessary as well. i would normally not consider buying a 10-year old vehicle but due to the fact it was a toyota and they are known for long-lasting vehicle lives, i had no concerns. now it seems i may have a $13k investment that is a danger to my family and worth next to nothing based upon the rust damage and serious implications it could cause. *tr

I was just like to issue a complaint about the excessive rust on the frame of my 2001 toyota sequoia. it is almost to the point where i will no longer be able to drive the vehicle. i was checking break wear when i noticed that the sway bar on the left front of my vehicle were rusted in two. i have ordered new sway bars. my sequioa was equiped with the tow package but am afraid to pull my bass boat with it in fear the hitch will be pulled loose from the frame because of all the rust. i have noticed recalls on the tundra for rusty frames and why i would like know why the sequoia isn't being recalled since this seems to be a common theme amongst owners of 2001 & 2002 sequoia owners.

The "vsc off" and vsc skid lights came on and has remained on to the present date. when the lights came on all vsc functions stopped. vehicle was taken to the dealership. repair was not under any warranty. an estimate of approximately $2200 was given to replace the vehicles ecu. no repair was made. occasionally the vehicle would lose power under moderate acceleration for a brief period (usually less than 2 seconds) as if something has cut power 20-30%. i suspect it was the vsc system trying to cut on or engage. this has not happened for some time. vehicle now has 178000 miles. *tt

Front brakes caused violent shaking at highway speeds. had prepared vehicle for lengthy holiday trip by inspecting and rotating tires, having wheel alignment, checking brake pads, rotors, bleeding brake lines with new dot3 brake fluid, engine oil change, coolant flushed, etc.... this was not the first incident, but definitely the worst. toyota dealership has told me on numerous occasions that they could not fix it. how disappointing. i recently found that this is a known issue that they don't want to address. people will die as a result of their recklessness. definitely a toyota problem due to improperly undersized braking system. you might end up being in the vehicle that one of these suvs rearends. *tr

Upon inspection, my mechanic notified me of excessive rusthrough on the rear frame of my 2001 toyota sequioa. this rustthrough has perforated the rear frame and the truck can no longer be driven. the rearend may separate from the body due to this excessive corrosion. this excessive corrosion is the same as seen on toyota tundra and tacoma where these vehicles have been recalled and replaced and or repaired. this is a dangerous situation and many other sequoia owners have filed complaints here at nhtsa and have posted on the internet. toyota is not helpful and will not replace the frames for sequoia owners. my sequoia's body is in great shape and runs great. now i cannot drive it and its worthless. this is a severe safety issue, and should be recalled for safety. i could have lost my rear axle and had a serious accident, especially, if i was towing my boat. *kb

Upon having vehicle inspected by ase-cert. tech., i was informed that 18"-24" of the vehicle's left main frame rail was rotted/rusted through along the bottom surface. the rotted section is located adjacent to the transmission cross-member on the left side, as well as smaller perforations on the right main frame rail in the same location (transmission cross member). also, the frame rail is rotted through at the junction where the spare tire carrier support is welded to the frame. technicians have advised that the vehicle is definitely unsafe to drive, as frame is in danger of collapsing, as well as spare tire falling off vehicle while in operation. its been brought to local toyota dealership for further assessment. factory "truck frame team" was contacted to discuss replacement of frame, as done in response to the rusted frame epidemic on tundras. this produced no results other than toyota stating that "there are no problems with sequoia frames", and "there is no program to replace them". toyota will *not* repair or replace this frame, nor offer any assistance with vehicle that is in otherwise excellent condition, with a book values of $9000.00-$10,000.00, now made worthless and un-drivable due to the rusted frame. there are many dozens of other identical complaints regarding dangerously rusted/rotted frames on 2001-2003 sequoias with rust damage all in the exact same locations, on this nhtsa website (see listings), but toyota will not admit to this obvious design/material defect, as they have with the tundra, which uses a nearly identical frame from same manufacturer and assembled in the same factory. neither has the nhtsa yet initiated any sort of intervention on behalf of consumers. early sequoia owners in northern us/canada would be well advised to have their vehicle frames inspected by qualified technician, and report those findings immediately. *tr

I was driving about 50mph when all over a sudden my car lost power and i heard a grinding noise and was shaking. then immediately the sequoia vsc & trac sensor lights turned on. this has happened twice now in the past one week. it's like i almost lost control of the car. it would have been definitely worse if i was on highway. i called toyota corp customer relation and filed a complaint but they would not admit to have this recalled despite the fact that they have had many safety issue complaints about this problem. they admitted the problem being reported on other models like 2003 and up but would not offer to recall mine and have it fixed because its a 2001.

When traveling at any speed the two warning lights concerning the trac control on the the dash comes on and beeps several times, the vehicle suddenly brakes and pulls hard to the right temporarily losing control. all this happens in a split second with no warning. i am very concerned with my safety along with my families and others on the road concerning this safety defect.

My car automatically applied it's brakes and veered sharply to the right. the vsc and trac off lights came on. this event repeated itself several times before i could get home. it almost forced me off the road. if i had been in the left lane, i would have hit any car in the right lane or if i had been going faster at the time, it would have been an accident. the cars behind me had to slam on brakes to avoid me. i checked online and there are many other similar complaints on the toyota sequoia in multiple years. there is a recall on the early 2003 models. toyota service says it's a common problem with the yaw sensor and an $800 repair.

I have a 2001 toyota sequoia that has excessive corrosion in the front swaybar mount and rear crossmember in the frame. this failure is identical to the failures seen in 2000-2003 toyota tundras that resulted in nhtsa campaign id number: 09v444000. as a result of this, toyota recalled model year 2000-2003 tundra vehicles due to excessive corrosion of the rear cross member that may cause the separation of the spare tire. the 2000-2003 toyota sequoia vehicles share identical frame cross member and spare tire mounting arrangements in which excessive corrosion in the rear cross member and spare tire mounting location can cause separation of the spare tire stowed under the rear cargo load floor which would result in a road hazard. this separation of the spare tire or mounting bracket could cause a crash. also, corrosion of the rear cross member could affect the rear brake lines and the proportioning valve, resulting in diminished braking capability. any separation of the spare tire and/or diminished braking capability could increase the risk of crash to affected vehicle and/or a road hazard to those traveling nearby. my vehicle has failed state inspection and is unclear whether it is repairable. *tr

Vehicle was making a noise and vibration in the undercarriage. took the car to toyota dealer in greenfield, ma. tech test drove and inspected car. excessive rust was found in the rear left suspension attachment to the frame. it was separated by 1 1/2 inches. service manager advised car is unsafe for driving. could have had a catastrophic failure while driving. excessive rust was found on the rest of the frame. vehicle is at dealer waiting for response from toyota. toyota says car is out of warranty and there is no recall for this auto. *tr

Component: structure, frame. took our car to a local toyota dealer for annual inspection. we were totally unprepared for this shocking news: it would never pass inspection because the frame underneath is rusted and has a hole the size of a baseball in the rear portion near the spare tire. not only do we suddenly not have a car to drive, it's worth has totally dropped to zero. should this be under toyota's recall for tacomas with this similar problem? we just returned from a 1500 mile trip and i shudder to think of what may have occurred .

Vsc, abs, trac, and brake warning lights all on constantly. when first observed, only occurred during cold weather. lights did not come on when weather and car was warm. starting 2010, these warning lights have constantly been on. toyota dealer seemed unsure of problem, but suspected that vsc computer needed to be replaced at a cost of $2500. *tr

2001 toyota sequoia rear trunk latch broken. apparently this is a recurring problem with the sequoia. once latch is broken, rear trunk can not be opened. you can not open it from the interior since there is not mechanism to do so. cost to replace the broken latch is costly to consumers. i have contacted toyota about this problem with their sequoia, but was told that they have not gotten any complaints. i did a web search and there are thousands who have encountered this problem. therefore, it is not covered under warranty or recall. bad design and cheap material used by toyota. far as safety, you can not have any passengers in the third row since the broken latch does not permit opening operation should one need to get those passengers out. diffidently a safety hazard and potential entrapment for those in the rear seats. part is available at a modest cost, but having dealing install is costly. *tr

I own a 2001 toyota sequoia. i got my sequoia brand new and now has over 88,000 miles. my sequoia began to give me trouble about three months ago everytime i tried to put it into gear. the gear felt tight almost difficult to put into gear. on a recent trip to san francisco, i began to also notice a "buzzing" sound on the gas pedal. as i was driving up the grapevine on interstate 5, my transmission "popped" and i had no power. it turns out that the drive pin broke inside the transmission and caused major damaged to the transmission. at the time this happened my wife and two young kids were with me. we were extremely lucky we did not get into an accident because of this major breakdown. i have come to rely on my vehicle and have been really good at keeping it tuned and getting the required services to keep my car in shape. my concern is, has this happened to anyone else who owns a 2001 toyota sequoia? if not, can it happen again? thanks nhtsa.

Took the sequoia to the body shop for minor repair - the body of the car looks almost new - no rust - a vehicle to be proud of... but... the repair man called me and sounded very concerned. just like tacomas and tundras, this vehicle has some of the worst frame rusting he has seen on a vehicle its age - especially for the lack of rust elsewhere. told me he hoped it was all paid for because i should junk it. 10k for a new frame and the car is worth less than 9k. i told him i still owed 8 thousand on it. he said to call toyota. said he works on 20 year old trucks all the time with nowhere near this type of frame rust. kept remarking how he couldn't believe it... said it just flakes apart when you touch it. he stressed that i should not have my children in that vehicle. my family vehicle. i called toyota complaints dept. the rep told me he was the senior rep there and that he had never heard of such a thing on a sequoia. told me that lots of trucks of all makes have frame rust problems. he explained that he doesn't know what the previous owner did to the vehicle - whether he did any underbody maintenance (he suggested that car owners generally rinse the undercarriage after driving in the snow). he even suggested that "..for all we know, this vehicle could have been in a flood." does a flood cause aggressive frame rust but leave the rest of the vehicle in mint shape? said there were no "programs" for me at this time and suggested i call nhtsa. ii had to ask - will nhtsa will help me buy a vehicle to drive my kids to their functions without risking their lives? because right now, i cant afford anything else. i have a loan on this car. calling toyota was 100 percent pointless. *tr

2001 toyota sequoia vsc traction inadvertently turned on while driving on a straight away highway at 75 mph causing the vehicle to abruptly pull to the right, almost causing a crash. luckily i pulled the steering wheel and car back into my lane and then exited and had the car towed to the dealer. this could have resulted a terrible crash and rollover. it was a very scary experience for me and the 7 witnesses in my car!!!!! *tr

I am experiencing problems with the traction control system on my 2001 toyota sequoia. unexpectedly, sometimes at high speeds, the traction control activates and can significantly affect steering and braking while driving due to strong grinding feeling during the traction control engagement. again, this activation has no apparent cause as it occurs on flat dry pavement at various speeds. luckily, i have been able to maintain control of the vehicle despite the significant effect this engagement has on the vehicle. at a minimum, there should be a longer delay between an initial warning light and the actual engagement of the system. there is no time to react with the current design. on my second trip to the local toyota dealership, they have determined that the yaw rate sensor should be replaced. during my first visit, they could not determine the cause of the problem after plugging the car into their computers. i paid the diagnostic fee and hoped it was an isolated incident. of course, it happened again about a week later (december 22, 2010 to be precise). i'm currently waiting for the part (yaw rate sensor) to come in as i must get the vehicle fixed. *tr

Had vehicle in for routine maintenance and was told the frame was rotted and had a whole the size of 2 fingers. this vehicle has the same frame as the 2001 toyota tundra which was recalled by toyota due to excessive rusting. i called toyota and was told they have no current recalls or fixes for this vehicle at this time. this is the same failure as the tundra which can cause the underneath spare tire to dislodge during operation.

I own a 2001 toyota sequoia sr5 limited 4x4. since new this sequoias vsc trac light would sometimes come on then reset itself when i turned the vehicle off. when the vehicle was taken to toyota they could not find a problem. last week with 62,000+ miles on the odometer i experienced a frightening event. i was driving straight approximately 20mph on a dry clear roadway when all off a sudden the "vsc trac" light illuminated and an icon of a vehicle skidding started flashing accompanied by a loud beeping noise. the scary part was that the sequoia started pulling to the right accompanied by a loud grinding noise which could be heard and felt through the steering wheel. the brakes also had lost some of its stopping power when i applied the brakes to pull over. i initially thought i had a right front flat tire or i ran over something that was caught in my undercarriage or suspension system. after what seemed to be approximately 3 seconds the beeping noise stopped and the vehicles "vsc trac" and "vsc off" lights stayed illuminated on the dash and i regained control of the sequoia. i pulled over and checked the outside of the sequoia and found no damage. i continued to drive with the vsc lights illuminated without incident. after i turned the vehicle off everything reset and the lights were off until the same exact incident occurred the following day. it was good there were no other vehicles on my right side because there may of been an accident due to the violent pull to the right when the above condition occurs. since the last incident i have not had any problems with the vsc, but i am taking my sequoia to an authorized toyota dealer on monday because i fear this incident may happen again at a higher rate of speed and i may lose control of my vehicle. after reading numerous complaints on the internet this appears to be a major problem with a vast majority of 2001 toyota sequoias! *tr

I have a 2001 toyota sequoia, purchased used in 2004. in 2006, the abs,vsc,brake lights began to light up intermittently. after a few months, they came on & stayed on. the dealer did a diagnostic test and said it was a computer problem and would cost $2500+ to fix. this seems like a major design flaw by toyota, and causes an extremely unsafe condition. i would expect a recall due to the number of similar complaints.

I bought my toyota sequoia in 2001 when it first came out. i drive the suv in the north east (ct, ny, nj) area generally and it now has about 75,000 miles on it. after about 4 years i noticed rust under it and every time i took it for any service they reported rust. last week the differential housing leaked and i took it to toyota to get a repair estimate. they commented that the vehicle was very heavily corroded (rusted) to the point that even if the differential housing was replaced that the suv would be very unsafe to drive as the rust was everywhere underneath. therefore i decided not to have the vehicle repaired since the cost to make it safe enough to drive was significantly more than replacing the differential housing that had completely rusted out with holes in it. there was significant other damage attributed to rust. the vehicle is still drivable but it is not being driven since it would damage the differential since it has less lubrication which is continually leaking. so far nothing has been done to correct the failure and several options are being looked into. *tr

My 2001 toyota sequoia had a problem where the abs and vtrac light would come on and the vehicle would violently pull to the right side and you would loose traction and control. this happened numerous times and was taken to the toyota dealer for repair. they reloaded the computer program because the computer was not logging the codes. the next day the same thing happened and i took it the dealer right away and they were able to get a code and determine it was a yawr sensor.the sensor was replaced on 6-10-10 and seems to have fixed the problem at a cost of $455.46 plus $100 to reprogram the computer. this seems to be a regular problem with this vehicle and it should involve a recall before someone get seriously injured or killed. *tr

Thursday may 20th 2001 ball joint failed on left front, doing 35mph. wheel came off. recall starting with sequoias manufactured august 2001. mine was manufactured may 2001. my vehicle was not under recall so they refused to fix it and the dealer wants $4800 for the repairs. they cited on the estimate that reason for failure is "unknown". they stated the right side ball joint is fine but they suggest replacing it for another $500. i was could have had a car full of teenagers going down the freeway at the time, my daughter wanted me to drive carpool for a field trip, luckily i couldn't drive for them. *tr

Parking brake needs constant adjustment to be effective. the parking brake is completely unusable after less than 2,000 miles after an adjustment. i have asked toyota about this several times, but have never received an effective solution or answer to the problem. since i very rarely use my parking brake, it is very easy to not know that it does not work. *tr

We were driving down the hill and the traction control system went crazy we skidded out and then the abs and traction control/slip lights went on. they stayed on until we took it to the dealer and they replace some brake sensors that were corroded. on the way home it happened again. the traction control computer was reporting that there were still bad sensors, but the sensors were fine, so they replaced the entire traction control computer. after a week in the shop it finally came back working. a traction control system should not throw your car out of control and run you off the road. the dealer said that they had not seen so much corrosion under a vehicle before. they said that the frame, exhaust, spare tire, and brake components as well as various other electrical components looked to have what they would call excessive corrosion. they said i should take it up with whom i bought it from. i think this is the same problem as the tundras are having with corrosion and should be looped into the same investigation. the sequoia, i was told when i bought it, was designed on the same frame, and drive train as the tundra which would explain why the corrosion is effecting similar braking systems and the spare. i would love for someone to investigate this. i would have hated for anything to happen to my family which was in the car with me. *tr

My 2001 sequoia is experiencing false skid indications, resulting in sudden, severe applications of the right front wheel brake, with no warning. after purchasing my used sequoia (with approximately 121,000 miles), we drove it approximately 70 miles without incident. we had just left a parking lot and driven less than one-half mile when the right front wheel brake suddenly did a strong apply, pulling the vehicle toward the right, off the road, while making a grinding sound. the brake apply and the noise lasted approximately (3) seconds, and then the brake released and the vehicle made a series of beeps. no indicator lights were illuminated on the instrument panel before, during or after the incident. we were traveling in a straight line on a dry, smooth road, at a speed of (25) to (30) mph; the outside temperature was approximately 80°f. the incident occurred a second time several hours later on the same day. all factors were identical, except we had driven about (5) miles after starting the vehicle. in each case, the vehicle was pulled toward the right, off the road, and could have resulted in an accident had there been an obstacle there (another car, pedestrian, etc). it was a holiday weekend and the dealership service departments in the area were closed. we drove the vehicle home and searched the internet for information on this incident, and were amazed to find many similar problems with model years ranging from 2001 to 2006, and with no known fix. the local dealership later confirmed that they had no knowledge of any incident like this. the vehicle has not been repaired. this is the most dangerous vehicle condition i have ever seen. i am justifiably afraid to drive the vehicle again, or to drive in the vicinity of any other sequoias or tundras that i see on the road. *tr

I began to notice over a year ago that the headlight high-beam indicator was working intermittently. after a few months of intermittent operation it ceased illuminating altogether. my local mechanic informed me that toyota had told him that the entire combination meter would need to be replaced to repair it (this was not entirely accurate). i recently found online that a number of owners reported that their high beam indicators were not working, and that a toyota service bulletin had been published to repair it. when i pulled up the service bulletin i noted that it required a wiring change in addition to replacement of a very expensive ecu. it is my contention that toyota should be financially responsible for repair of this expensive modification since the vehicle was wired improperly to begin with and since there are substantial safety implications for vehicles driving with headlights on bright when the driver is not aware of it. *tr

My 2001 toyota sequoia is experiencing false skid indications resulting in dangerous applications of the right front wheel brake. the indications are illumination of the skid symbol, rapid antiskid servo action, right front wheel brake application which last from one second to as much as 30 seconds. once the right front brake application stops, the skid symbol is no longer illuminated and the trac off and vsc trac lights illuminate. this occurs in all driving conditions at low or high speed, smooth road surfaces, and whether going straight or turning. i have had the toyota service department connect their computer several times to determine a cause and they can not definitively tell what has failed. sometimes they tell me it could be the yaw sensor or the skid control ecm, but these are very expensive parts that may or may not fix the problem. this problem has been occurring for about a year. initially, the first sign of a problem with the car occurred while driving at 35 mph and the throttle went to idle and the trac off, vsc trac, and engine lights illuminated. toyota said it was the throttle cable and throttle sensor and i paid them to replace both parts. shortly after this, the false skid failures began. the false skid failures occur randomly and without warning and recently, the frequency of occurrence has increased. *tr

The vsc light came on after my 2001 sequoia hit a pot-hole. this was back in 2004 and the light remains on. i was told it was a sensor. the vehicle is long out of warranty and i can't afford any expenses right now. that's just one of a few major components to go. in 2003 the torque converter went and the transmission had to be replaced. i had 88,000 miles on it and it was beyond the 60,000 drive train warranty. however, toyota did pay for half of the $4000 bill with the dealership picking up a 1/4 of the bill. i paid the rest. was paying half an admission by toyota that they provided a faulty transmission. i do know that the dealership removed the old transmission and shipped it off to toyota and i never heard another word about it. the brakes on these big vehicles have been a sore spot with me. i've had to change brakes and rotors numerous times over the years. and last on my list of complaints is the tailgate. it has rusted out prematurely and it is more than a $1,000 to replace. i use bungies to keep it closed up and i had to prop the window up since the tracking system in the tailgate rusted out and fell apart. *tr

2001 toyota sequoia- 48k miles..vehicles traction control and vsc lights come on shortly after driving the car. just before the lights come on, the car shakes and makes a grinding noise, pulls to the right, and loses power. this occurs every time you drive the car. anywhere from 1min to 15min from the start of driving. it is very dangerous once the vehicle is up to speed, we have almost gotten in to an accident because the car pulled so violently and didn't have power. the car will shake and pull and the only way we've gotten it to stop is by stepping on the brake and reducing speed (less than 30 mph). after we reduce the speed, the trac and vsc lights come on and the car is drivable until you cycle the ignition. it's pretty scary. my father-in-law took the car to a toyota dealership and their diagnosis is skid control ecu faulty, must replace. dtc codes c1363 and c1234. the cost they quoted him was $2415.99 + $200 labor. we haven't decided to purchase the new ecu because we feel its something that should be covered under a warranty or should be a tsb. i've since searched the internet and found that other sequoia owners have the same problem and toyota's response is to just replace the ecu. some of them even got into accidents due to the sudden loss of power and shaking. *tr

The sequoia has a vehicle skid control (vsc) that is supposed to activate when the vehicle is involved in a slide or skid or some kind. however, the vsc tends to activate on it's own and during normal driving conditions. the activation causes the right front brake to slow the wheel causing the vehicle to pull drastically to the right for no apparent reason. this has happened numerous times at 30-45mph on smooth, straight roadway. it is a definite safety issue and a crash is bound to happen. i found several more complaints on the issue on-line at tundrasolutions.com. i still own this vehicle and the problem still persists. toyota says the unit needs to be replaced and the parts man stated he sell or replaces 7-8 vsc units per week. *tr

While driving at a rate of 70mph the vsc trac and trac control warning lights came on. the car decreased in speed and veered to the right, causing me to momentarily loose control of the car. per owner's manual took car into dealership for diagnostic. per codes obtained via diagnostic dealer suggests replacing yaw control sensor and ecu. after researching this issue myself it seems to bean issue with the 2001 sequoia and its ecu, yaw control sensor, and the steering angle sensor that could result in serious harm or injury if not corrected. *tr

My vsc/abs skid control light went on and my vsc/trac sensor and abs lights were going on and off for about 5 days. the first time was on the highway and i lost all acceleration and had to pull of the road two times over a 4 mile stretch. the final time, which caused me to go for a repair was, at a stop sign where i began to accelerate when my skid light came on and the gas pedal became unresponsive for about 10 seconds. i was able to swerve to avoid a collision with an oncoming vehicle but was scared as i had my one year old in the vehicle and felt helpless. i got an estimate from two dealers and one came in at $2,000 stating the whole throttle needed replacing with the sensor. the second dealership spent 8 hours examining it and decided to clean the throttle control sensor and this seemed to fix it without any added expense. this dealer only charged me $55 for a checkup!! there have been no recurrence of this issue thank god! this should be a recall!! *tr

I was dropping off my wife and 4 month-old twins @ the airport. she was going on a vacation w/ her mom and sisters. while getting her checked in, our 9-year-old twin girls and 3 year-old girl were sitting in the car. we were standing right next to the car but could not see in the back w/ the dark tinted windows. in the mean time, one daughter, who was sitting in the 3rd row, middle seat of our 2001 toyota sequoia, became tangled in the automatically latched seatbelt. as she attempted to get free, she only got further twisted. her twin sister then yelled to us, her parents. we opened the trunk and found her purple and struggling to breathe. the worst thing is that we couldn't unlatch the belt, nor could we untangle her. we started yelling for something sharp to cut the belt (the airport is not the best place to find something sharp) and at the same time we grabbed the key out of the ignition to attempt to stick into the latch in hopes of unlatching the belt in an alternative way. in what seemed an eternity of helplessness, the sky cap found scissors and cut the belt... at the same time, i released the belt from the latch w/ the help of the key. just as our daughter passed out, we were able to untangle her from the belt. fortunately, were able to quickly get her breathing again. police and paramedics were called. a report was filed. all commented on the poor design of this middle belt! hopefully our near tragedy with a happy ending will prevent anyone else from a tragic ending! please help us require this type of belt to have another design w/ a simple manual release! thanks, vernon j cooley, md *tr

My 2001 toyota sequoia had an issue with "check engine" light at approximately 77,000 miles. it pulled the p0155 code that indicated failure of oxygen sensor. toyota had at least two technical service bulletins on the issue showing this problem as widely known. what is more, on tundra vehicles (that have the same engine)toyota recognized the issue by extending the warranty on sensors and on that specific code up to 90000 miles. the repairs cost was almost $340, pulling the code (5 min) and replacing the sensor (15 min) was charged at 2 hrs of labor. toyota customer service refused to cover repairs. customer service case 2007-07250397. *tr

The throttle body sensor failed numerous times causing my family to lose all acceleration on a very busy highway. i was able to get off the highway and get a tow to the toyota dealer (david maus) and they thought initially that the whole throttle body needed to be replaced ($2000+) but after the mechanic cleaned the sensor it resolved the issue thus far, its been three months without recurrence. i want people to know this is a cheap fix as i believe others noted here that the dealership only offered replacement as a solution. i did have a second quote done elsewhere just to be sure and they were going to replace the whole throttle body as well without trying an alternative. be careful out there and get a second opinion. *tr

On friday, may 25, 2007 at approximately 2:45pm, my wife (belinda) was traveling on the northbound 57 freeway transitioning to the westbound 210 freeway. at this point, she lost control of the vehicle. hysterical, she still managed to navigate the vehicle over to what is a quasi shoulder on this transition only to exit the vehicle, examine the affected area (passenger front wheel), to find that the wheel itself had come apart from the vehicle looking like a \"pancake.\" it would only be a few moments before passersby stopped stating to her (after they had examined the damage) that her ball-joint had broken along with several other parts of the suspension. she was lucky she wasn't killed (or, my entire family for that matter on a trip to san francisco we had taken only three weeks before this date). my wife telephoned me on my cell phone, at which point i called the auto club for a tow. shortly after, a chp officer had appeared on the scene as well as a tow-truck driver. traffic was backed up for approximately 3 miles. however, both the chp person and the tow-truck driver stated more specifically that, the lower ball-joint had failed. my wife was petrified. when i got in there, a service-writer (i have her card somewhere else) had already undertaken a search to see if my vehicle fell under a recall. i found it curious that she\'d do a search for this specific recall if she did not already know exactly what was wrong with the vehicle (as if she had seen this exact kind of damage before). in other words, i am reasonably certain that she knew exactly what was wrong with the truck when i brought it in. as of this morning, i spoke with the symes service manager (louis) who in turn stated that he spoke with his \"area director\" \"tomo.\" he instructed his service manager, louis, to tell me that toyota will not be taking care of this as it does not fall within the vehicles recalled. *tr

I lease a used 2001 toyota sequoia sr5 4wd suv in november of 2001. the skid control ecu had failed in 2003 and a toyota dealership did not want to replace it for reasons that the warranty no longer covers it. to replace the ecu computer, i will have to pay over $2000.00. this problem prevents the anti-skid control and anti-lock brakes (abs) to function. i have found out that this problem with the ecu has been very common for the toyota sequoia's made between 2000 and 2003. there are several occasions where i almost had an accident because of failure of the abs and anti-skid control. toyota has clearly ignored and avoided to fix this problem. i hope you can help me. *jb

We tried to open the back hatch and the handle was broken. there is no other way to open the hatch. because of this, my husband had to crawl over the seats and pull our heavy luggage out the other direction while the shuttle was waiting to take us to the airport. we had to spend $200 to repair this problem in addition to our other problems with this vehicle. *jb

Tracking control and emergency brake lights stay on all the time. have had the problem fixed twice, but within a week or 2, the lights come back on and stay on incessantly. toyota service center says "there is nothing they can do about it", so i have lived with it for 4+ years now. the brakes shake the entire vehicle when applied, they feel warped or bumpy. again, "there is nothing they can do about it".

Got 2001 toyota sequoia 02/2001 many problems. one is vsc system warn lights on, total activation of vsc system for no reason. 8/04 brought to dealer, vsc warning lights on and sometimes power cut,very dangerous! dealer found "yaw rate sensor may possibly be malfunctioning, but everything working according to manufacturer specifications no problem at this time. vsc system working as designed. ok to return to service." 7/06 check engine light on. brought to dealer 8/3/06, told nothing wrong, probably loose gas cap. we had heard that excuse before. 8/18/06 on a trip from ct to sc, vsc off/ vsc trac off warning lights came on and beeped. arrived at our destination, parked car for 1 hour. drove about 1 mi vsc system fully activated brought us to complete stop in traffic, almost rear ended! took to local dealer (8/21). $191 later was told it was a sensor malfunction not a safety issue what so ever. service rep said "absolutely not a problem to drive to ct perfectly safe". 3 hours later vsc off /vsc track off warning lights came on. on our last stop warning lights went off as usual but did not come back on right away. instead vsc system went into total activation on i81 at 70 mph! luckily we were in right lane. made it to narrow shoulder. got vehicle under control, the shoulder had run out and we were about 1 ft from hitting the guardrail. we could have been killed and could have caused a 40 car pile up with many deaths! brought vehicle to our local dealer. problem so dangerous that i don't want to get in this car again! i will never feel safe or trust toyota service again. toyota needs to educate dealer service depts and recall this vehicle before someone dies. this is only one of many problems we have had with this car and toyota service. we could have been killed or hurt twice (not just this incident) because of malfunctions and toyota service mistakes. we bought this vehicle because of toyota's reputation for safe, quality-built vehicles. we got neither! *jb

Dt*: contact stated the vehicle's skid control and traction control were making the vehicle very slow. no matter how far down the gas pedal was depressed, the vehicle would still not obtain the required power from the engine. the traction control and skid control were also not being controlled by the vehicle's computer. this problem started a year ago and was more common during the summer season. there were no accidents reported to these incidences. the vehicle was taken to the dealership however the problem persisted. the dealer determined that although the vehicle skid control and traction control computer were not working automatically, the brakes would continue to operate safely.

During normal driving vsc, trac control and brake lights all lit up. lights go off and come back on intermittently. i have been on edmunds website and see too many other people with this exact issue. it will cost on the average over $1,000 to correct. my vehicle is no longer covered under warranty and is too young and expensive to have this issue. this is something that i feel toyota should recall. *jb

Faulty latch on rear hatch. unable to open with either key or with remote. it is stuck because it may have something defective with either the latch or the lock. *jb

Driving south bound on rt. 301 in bowie, md. began to slow and moved right into the exit lane towards mount oak rd. west bound. heard a loud noise and the 2001 toyota sequoia leaned over toward the drivers side front wheel. it became extremely hard to turn the steering wheel and braking power was greatly reduced and the sequoia was basically uncontrollable. was able to steer slight towards the right to avoid being pulled back into traffic. impacted a safety median, designed to protect cars entering the highway from those exiting the highway, and crossed completely over it the wheel hub had separated from the lower control arm. the tire, wheel rim, hub, steering rack, steering tie rod, control arms, brake lines, drive axle, etc. had all been damage severely. pictures of the scene show a single skid mark from the driver's side front wheel clearly. the single skid mark indicates that one wheel was not rotating at all, while the other three were rotating freely, or under the control of the anti-lock brakes. i found no my 2001 recalls. i later found nhtsa campaign id number : 05v225000 indicating a recall due to failed ball joints in the 2002-2004 sequoia. the sequoia model was first available as a my2001 and initial introduction was late in 2000. my2002 started in the late summer of 2001. i find it hard to believe that so quickly after the model introduction toyota would make major changes in the suspension and/or ball joints. it was by luck only that no one was injured or killed due to the suspension failure, toyota needs to react quickly and notify my2001 owners of this dangerous defect. not only did the suspension fail, causing the wheel to move back and jam into the rear wheel well area, but it seemed to cause an almost total loss of braking ability. i believe the anti-lock brakes responded to the locked front wheel by modulating the power to the other wheels resulting in less braking force. *jb

I own a 2001 toyota sequoia and the front left ball joint is making a popping noise. i contacted toyota and they told me they are not offering a remedy campaign for the 2001 toyota sequoia. they have a remedy campaign on the sequoia and tundra for 2002-2004. they are not offering a remedy campaign for the 2001 sequoia even though the front ends are the same. i am concerned not only for my family, other owners and the general public that walk, ride and drive on our public roads. when the ball joints fails the vehicle will wreck and cause serious injuries to all people in the vehicle or close to the accident. it does not make any since that the 2002-2004 sequoia and tundras have a remedy campaign and the 2001 sequoia does not when they have the same front end. *nm

Headlights will not shut off after the engine is turned off. also, a buzzing noise comes from the fuse box while the headlights are on. as a result of the headlights staying on, the battery runs down. the only way to start sequoia is to jump/boost with another car/battery. legacy toyota, 4115 jonesboro road, union city, ga 30291, 770.964.8888 replaced the fuse box junction block assembly and block assembly on 11/30/04. i took the sequoia back to legacy this morning for the same problem. *jb

Vehicle: 2001 toyota sequoia sr5 2wd. front suspension problem. since obtaining the vehicle in april 2001 i noticed a problem in the stability of the front end of the vehicle. i took it to the dealership (i-10 toyota in indio) on 3 separate occasions and they were unable to identify the problem. when i heard about the recall (o5v225000) i anticipated that this was the trouble that i had all along with the sequoia. when i looked into the recall it turned out that it referred to 2002 to 2004 vehicles only. common sense tells me that if the trouble existed on subsequent models after its inception to the market, it is only obvious that 2001 models are to be included. i understand that recall letters will be issued starting in july 2005. i am filing this complaint because i am aware that 2001 models will not be included and i respectfully request that 2001 year models are also recalled. the instability with the front end continues. the tires have been changed 3 times to different types and the instability continues. please verify with your internal engineers if the ball joints utilized on 2001 models were any different than latter models. you will find that the same mechanisms have been used until now that this issue is being addressed by your office. your attention and subsequent positive inclusion of my petition is appreciated. hector casas

Traction control system (vsc/trac) will intermittently not function for no apparent reason, causing vsc/trac lights to illuminate and potentially compromising vehicle safety. diagnostic check of vehicle reveals a problem with the brake booster and/or a sensor within the brake booster assembly that is prone to intermittent failure on this vehicle. replacement of the parts in question are prohibitively expensive (over $1,000) and only covered up to 3yr/36k mile on the vehicle. there is a definite failure trend present in this particular vehicle and toyota knows about them, given the tsbs that exist for this problem. this issue needs to be addressed as a recall to ensure all vehicles, especially ones out of warranty coverage, are repaired properly. *jb

While driving in inclement weather the windshield wipers would come on and go off intermittently. the problem was intermittent. please fill in additional information. *jb

2001 toyota sequoia, v-8, 2wd. vehicle vibrates when braking due to warped front rotors. rotors have been turned, but warp soon after due to heat buildup. the problem has been recognized by toyota and included in tsb-br000r-02, tsb-br001-03). new rotors and calipers are needed, but dealer will only replace for a fee as my vehicle is out of warranty. *jb

Squealing brakes and severe warped rotors causing vibrations while braking. contacted toyota and was notified that calipers and rotors are insufficient for the vehicle. tsb issued to repair if under warranty, otherwise cost is $2000. after one week of driving, following a replacement of the rotors and pads, notice an extreme vibration. discovered that the rotors are heating up real fast. notified that this condition could cause brakes to fail if not fixed properly. my safety could be jeopardized by this defect. vehicle cost is $40k with additional costs to correct a known defect discovered after warranty expires. i expect more for my initial expense. toyota should be responsible to correct these problems before there are any incidences of brake failure causing injury to anyone. *jb

Monday, september 27th, 2004 i brought in my sequoia for service. i had complained that when the vehicle is stopped (with my foot on the brake) and the air conditioning engages the car rolls forward. the last time that this had happened, several days before, had resulted in an accident with another vehicle. the service tech informed me that they had been able to duplicate the problem and that toyota's regional factory technician needed to verify their own assessment and approve the warranty work to correct the problem he also stated very specifically that they had never seen this problem before. friday, october 8th, 2004 glenn kashima, service director from tustin toyota called me. he informed me that the factory technician had been out to look at the car. he had not been able to duplicate the problem, and determined that the car was operating within specifications. he told me that i could pick the car up. i made it clear that this was unacceptable. first they tell me that the have identified a problem, have never seen this problem before, and it will be covered by my warranty. then they tell me that there is nothing wrong. wednesday, october 13th, 2004 i went to toyota dealership. i spoke with glenn kashima. he again reiterated that the car was operating within specs. this in spite of his acknowledgement of the fact that his own technician had duplicated the problem, etc. he told me that he had asked his technician if his foot had been pushing strongly on the brake when he had duplicated the problem, or only lightly on the brake. glenn told me that he had been asked this by the toyota factory guy. he described that his own toyota truck does that..that if your foot is not pressed hard on the brake that will happen. i asked, 'are you telling me that if the car is stopped, with my foot on the brake sufficiently to have the vehicle stopped, that the vehicle will lurch forward when the a/c engages?' he nodded his head and said,"yes."*ak

Failure reguarding to tires....in particular to toyo tires / open country, 265/r70/16. he problem is a safety issue, the tires are cracking in the tread grooves. and not just one tire all four tires, to top that all off these are the second set....the first one's were already replaced for the same problem. the originals had only less than 10,000miles when i, had noticed the cracking, toyo tires replaced all four because of the defect( all four tire were cracked). the replacement set also cracked the same way, but i, had just noticed the defect....almost 45,000miles later (again all four tires are cracked the same way. i have been told different and changing stories. what i want to know are these tires safe....i'm worried about my families safety, are these tires going to explode as they drive on the highway(we have a large suv). this defect should be checked out. i can send a copy of the bills and the authorization numbers for the replacements (second set / all four). also i am willing to send the tires. how can this be 8 tires all crack the same way, is this a big defect? or does the, number of deaths, box need a number in it first?*ak

2001 toyota sequoia - i have the same problem as hundreds of other toyota tundra and sequoia owners: early warping of the front disc rotors which results in severe brake vibrations and loss of stopping power. on two occasions i have lost control of the vehicle. i have had toyota and independent brake specialists turn the rotors and replace the brake pads on an average of once every 4000 miles since owning the car and now am on my second set of rotors. i was told there was no solution. my warranty expired without toyota informing me of a service bulletin recommending replacement during my service calls which would mandate replacement of the brake calipers. now, after the expiration of my warranty they inform me of a tsb that would have replaced it under warranty, but now i have to pay $1400. several other consumers on mycarstats.com relate that the replacement calipers do not solve the problem. toyota is trying to avoid responsibility. it is obvious that this is a faulty brake system. not a faulty radio or a faulty dome light. people will die. it is your responsibility to do recall this vehicle and mandate toyota to enact a proper and safe solution now.*ak

Unable to open rear liftgate. the latch that is used to release the locking mechanism would stick and you cannot release the liftgate. the problem turned out to be the lock mechanism was severely corroded and both the rear latch and lock assembly had to be replaced. the parts alone cost approx $140.00 my mechanic had contacted toyota for the parts and was told that there were 3 other sequoias in for the same issue. *ak

Purchased 2001 sequioa approx. 7/2001 sloane toyota- devon, pa. approx. 13k car began to shudders when braking. dealer advised needed new brakes reason "due to the size of vehicle, is not uncommon for brakes need replacing every 8-13k miles" was later advised rotors need grinding. service guy said i must have "hit the brakes real hard." no way. i baby this car. dealer then advised rotor work was under warranty.now life of rotors compromised. i was not advised about tsb re: rotors/ brake calipers. 7/28/2004 went for oil change. was advised i needed brake pads =$250, vehicle now has 19k. again i'm reminded " big cars need to have brakes replaced every 15 -20k if not sooner." is apparent service people have been "coached" to follow script re: brake/ rotor probs w/vehicle. found many posts on internet re: this prob. dealers all over u.s. feeding consumers same line. is insanity to have consumers install brakes every 15k-20k miles (normal driving) and rotors gound every 13k. also- tires that came w/car are bald/need replacing. dunlops (sorry, don't have the model handy and i want post to go). very low mileage on car, it should be "mint." consumers apparently expected to replace brakes/ tires and have the rotors ground every 13k - 19k miles for life of vehicle. considering cost of vehicle dealers should own up to the vehicle faults, advise consumers of current probs and "replace" (not grind) badly engineered parts, tires, etc. and eat those service costs. if it weren't for the fact that i am leaving for vacation in a few days, i would go right back with internet posts in handand press them for a good explanation and a refund for the brake work, get new rotors and calipers installed and be compensated for the lousy tires the vehicle came with. i researched suv's for over 1.5 years before deciding on the sequoia, i wish it would live up to consumer expectations. kirby mcghee paoli, pa. 19301. *ak

While applying the accelerator pedal vehicle cut the throttle back from idling. this caused the wheels to spin, then vehicle moved forward on its own, and stalled. consumer restarted vehicle, and drove it to the dealer for inspection. dealer informed the driver that vehicle was operating as designed, but it was unsafe to operate it. *ak

We have a toyota sequoia, the problems are the 4 wheel drive is not operating all the time. it does not engage sometimes and does not stay in 4 wheel drive. one example is my wife had six friends in the vehicle the 4 wheel drive did not stay engaged and the vehicle skid control made the engine loose power so she slid backwards down a hill. no one would ride in our 4wheel drive again. the vehicle skid control makes the engine loose power while in traffic. there is also a hesitation in the engine when accelerating from a complete stop. another problem is the braking system is not adequate for the vehicle. the entire front brakes had to be replaced. the vehicle has been in for the same repairs at least 10 times and is still not working the way it should. we have all the documentation for service on our sequoia. we have done internet research through nhtsa and have found the same problem with other toyota sequoia's. there was also a problem with the air conditioner having a bad oder from bacteria growing, the exhaust manifold was loose and the power window motors made a loud noise. we have filed a complaint on all the same problems with nhtsa, comsumer affairs of california and you. we want to pursue the lemon law and get our money back. we are currently working with toyota arbritration but are getting nowhere. we have had toyota's previously and had no problems with them. this vehicle is a lemon.

Gas gauge erroneously indicates no fuel in gas tank (intermittent problem with fuel level sending unit, that happens when fuel level is in the 2/3 to 1/2 range. problem lasts for a short while and will go away after driving a few miles when the fuel level in the tank drops. toyota dealer states that there is no toyota service bulletin for this problem. *ak

Toyota sequoia sr5 2001. rear liftgate glass is lowered by itself when the vehicle is not running and locked-up. his problem was reported to me by the original owner. i noticed it once in november 2003. suspected that the key on the remote control that lowers the liftgate window may have accidentally been depressed, causing the window to lower. then decided to have the manual lock that disables all power window and liftgate glass switches depressed to disable the power window options. verified that with this key depressed, i could not lower the lifygate window neither by depressing the remote control key, nor by the switch on the dashboard. then in december 2003, on two occasions, i noticed that on two occasions the liftgate window had lowered by itself. i ensurded that the key for disabling the power window and liftgate glass was still engaged. called the dealer. toyota dealer indicated there is a service bulletine for replacing the remote control unit (for power lock and lowering the liftgate glass). i have agreed to replacing the remote control units, but strongly disagree with toyota's position that changing the remote control unit will address this problem. the problem happens when the key to disengage the power window and rear liftgate glass keys is engage. i suspect that the problem is with a control module activating the liftgate motor rather than the remote control unit (based on the condition under with the liftgate glass in my car has been lowered on two occasions in dec 2003). *ak

Since owning the vehicle, vsc initializes on dry straight pavement, at low speeds. returned to local ct dealer multiple times. no problem found. on a recent trip, driving on an interstate highway, straight road, 70mph, all of a sudden it felt like the front of the vehicle was coming apart. the next thing i knew i went from the right to left lane and into the median. luckily no other vehicles were involved and no rollover occurred. i was able to gain control. the vsc was the cause. this time the vsc would not reset. took it to a toyota dealer in jonesboro, ar. they replaced the steering angle sensor and stated this was a frequent problem with the vsc. *nlm

Front disc brakes wear out prematurely, and dealer did not inform the consumer that there was a service campaign for the front brake actuator upgrade at the time of repair. now several months later, dealer tells the consumer that the repair must be done by 36,000 miles. this service bulletin is a "product improvement campaign" which means that the front brakes do not work correctly, and newer, improved components will solve the brake problem. the brakes wear out prematurely, now viberate violently, and it is now difficult to stop the vehicle from rates of speed of 50 mph. this must be a safety issue!*ak

I am taking my 2001 toyota sequoia for the 4th time to have the rotors worked on. the first two times, they just turned them. the third time, they replaced them. this time they are replacing them. the truck only has 28,000 miles on it and i believe this is excessive for a new vehicle that i drive very carefully.

Consumer states" every 3000 miles the vehicle brakes are being replaced. due to brake pedal having to be pressed to the floor before they stop vehicle. dealer has replaced brakes and rotors. please provide any further information. ts

After meeting with district parts and service operations manager steve carlson on 9/23/02. i¿¿ve come to the conclusion that toyota will not fix the problem i have with the smell coming from my 2001 sequoia. first of all, i had to call the dealership at 10:30 in morning to make sure that the manager was going to be there. second is that i got the run around about i should try a ¿¿for fun and giggles¿¿ by not running my recycling mode when driving with the a/c on. third is that when the front windows are open i¿¿m still getting the worst smell of exhaust coming from the rear. i understand his point about the balance of air with opening and closing of baffles in the rear and front of the vehicle. i want to make a note that the venting of this vehicle without the recycling on is the worst i¿¿ve had in all the vehicles i¿¿ve owned. the idea of asking me to use the front vents instead of recycling is a catch 22. where if i keep the recycling on and smell the exhaust smell with it¿¿s 0% emissions in my vehicle compared to opening the front vent and smelling the car in front of me with who knows what. fourth, i have to get enough people to complain about this problem before toyota will do anything to fix this design fault

I need to report my 2001 toyota sequioa after an incident that nearly became a deadly accident that no one could have found out that it was because of a manufacturer's transmission default had i not survived that incident.on dec. 24, 2002, i was driving my 2001 toyota seqioua in fwy 5 when suddenly the engine stopped in the middle of the fwy 5.i was able to start the engine, but it died down after i changed the (automatic) gear to drive.i, together with two passengers: one adult and a 4-yr old toddler,was stuck in the vehicle waiting for the inevitable.to cut the story short,i got my car towed to the nearest toyota dealership, frontier toyota in valencia.after they checked the car on 12/26, the service rep informed me that the automatic transmission needs to be replaced.i bought my 2001 toyota sequioa in nov of 2000 when it first came out in the market.i've maintained my suv with toyota dealerships (mcpherson in tustin, and sunnyvale toyota). i had it serviced for its 30,000 mile maintenance. on may 2002 which is just 7 months prior to the incident on dec 24, 2002. i tried contacting toyota's corporate office, but they don't want to cover the service under the 60,000 mile warranty because the mileage at the time of the incident is 3,000 over.it doesn't make any sense to me that an automatic vehicle i bought brand new, which i have maintained at their dealership all through out including the required 30,000 mile service, will just break down and needs its automatic transmission replaced at 63,000 mileage that nearly caused my life and two other passengers. i am concerned that i may have gotten the default vehicle from the first batch of this suv that came out in the market in nov of 2000.and i am concerned that a manufacturer's default can be overlooked and could have been the cause of my loss and others.i feel responsible to inform to prevent any possible loss/es.i need to be heard because i nearly lost my life, including two more, right before christmas.

We have a toyota sequoia, the problems are the 4 wheel drive is not operating all the time. it does not engage, when it does sometimes it does not stay in 4 wheel drive. one example is when my wife had six friends in the vehicle the 4 wheel drive did not stay engaged and the vehicle skid control made the engine loose power so she slid backwards down a hill. no one would ride in our 4 wheel drive again. the vehicle skid control activates at radom on dry pavement. the skid control makes the engine loose power while in traffic. there is also a hesitation in the engine when accelerating from a complete stop. another problem is the braking system is anot adequate for the vehicle. the entire front brakes had to be replaced. the vehicle has been in for the same reairs at least five times and is still not working the way it should. we have all the documentation for service on our sequoia. we have done internet research through the nhtsa and have found the same problem with other toyota sequoia's.

While driving vehicle the steering wheel was wobbling and pulling to the right. the drivers side rear tire tread seperated. please provide any further information. ph

Consumer states while driving a 2001 toyota sequoia at 60 mph, the right rear tire had a blowout. original equipemnt, tire size p265/70r16, and the dot# db72c481001. dealer and the manufacturer were notified. *jb consumer stated that the tire had never been soft or flat, the whole side wall blew out. *yh

Brakes were repaired 6 times. while driving applied brakes and vehicle shook violently.*ak

Sliding door continued to close while consumer was standing in door way. please provide further information. *ak

When having two windows or even one window open in back seats, vehicle will start to shake in a way that can cause consumer to lose control. contacted dealer, and dealer was not willing to do anything.*akspecifically when there is a rear window open, the vehicle vibrates violently, so severe it's enough to bounce the vehicle as if loosing control. vehicle was taken to dealer who proclaims it's a design flaw. *jg

Vehicle will not override vsc ( vehicle skid control ) if caught in traction, if surface was rough or bumpy. vehicle will not accelerate until it regained traction. toyota was notified. *ak

When accelerating from a complete stop there was a hesitation in engine. this hesitation almost resulted in several vehicle crashes. dealership has examined vehicle, but could not duplicate the problem. informed consumer this hesitation was normal. please provide any additional information / documentation. *ak

Purchased a 2001 sequoia. after warranty expired, & continuing to today, vsc/trac off lights come on while driving, but goes off by itself. researched the issue & found that this problem is common & costly to fix. please investigate if this is a defect & safety recall issue. thanks. *tr

Consumer's wife was driving at approximately 440 mph when another vehicle travelling 60 mph ran a red light and turned into consumer's vehicle, hitting it head-on. front end was severely damaged, pushing radiator through the engine. airbags didn't deploy. consumer was injured. manufacturer has apologized, and will send someone out to inspect vehicle. amount of damage was $23629. vehicle will take approximately 9 months to be totally repaired. *ak toyota issued a letter to consumer stating that the srs operated as designed. *slc

Running board has a non slip strip, consumer has slipped on it numerous times.*ak

While traveling a little twig hit windshield. as a result of that windshield had a small mark. also, when traveling small pebbles hit windshield, windshield was cracked. please provide further information.*ak consumer states pebble hit original winshield, causing damage, dealer replaced windshield at consumer's expense, the replacement windshield has four cracks which happened within the first month of driving, glass company tested glass and glass failed, consumer states neither the manufacturer or local dealer are willing to help with the windshield. *jb

Anti- skid control system mode solenoid sensor/ abs brakes can activate at any random time. contacted dealer, and dealer stated there was nothing wrong with vehicle.*ak the skid control system activated five times during the first week of puchase, but had not occured since. however, the consumer does not feel confortable because of possibility of reoccurence. *yh

I bought a new 2001 toyota sequoia. the brake pads and rotors had to be replaced at 5,000. i now have 15,000 mi and both again have to be replaced because the car shivers when braking on a hill or suddenly. i have the extra care warranty (6 years, 100,000 miles), but the toyota dealer is saying it will occur again and that they cannot do anything about it, nor cover it again under warranty. i drive this car very carefully. i have kids and cannot afford to be braking hard all the time. brake problems in a busy, trafficky city like l.a. can be dangeroous. this is also a new car and seems like a manufacturing defect. i just wanted you to be aware of the problem in case other sequoia owners are experiencing the same problems. thank you.*ak

Brake problem presented itself by the vehicle vibrating when braking from high speed. all brakes required servicing and then replacement. emergency brake required adjusting three times within 20,000 miles. when only one window is open at speeds greater than 30 mph, causes severe pressure vibrations inside the vehicle interior. pressure vibrations extremely distracting and annoying.*ak

Engine stopped while driving 40 mph. would crank, but not start. efi1 fuse was burned out, replaced, and burned out again upon cranking.
