2001 PONTIAC Grand Am

Yesterday morning I walked out to my car and noticed a stain on the road right under my car engine. I was running late so I didn’t think about looking to see what was wrong with my car. Once I started my car and drove it for maybe two minutes my low coolant light came on and then stayed on for maybe a minute. I didn’t think anything of it since I was on a major highway in the middle of rush hour. I continued on my way to work and maybe ten minutes later my low coolant light came back on. I couldn’t get out and check because once again I was still in the middle of rush hour getting to work. As before the light only stayed on for a minute and then went off. I made it to work without the light coming on again. Once I went out to my car to leave work there was a stain on the concrete where my car sat. The stain was almost as big as my engine. I popped open my hood and looked to see if I had any coolant left and the tank was completely dry. So I put some coolant in and drove home. On my way home my low coolant light came on three times and went off three times, also I noticed that my temperature gauge was going up. Since once again being in rush hour I couldn’t pull over and check my coolant levels every five to ten minutes, I waited to make it home before I checked my engine and coolant. I out a piece of cardboard under my car last night to see if I could see what was leaking but nothing leaked. But after I drove 30 miles to get to my college classes, I checked under my car and low and be hold there was a stain on the concrete under my car and I know it was from my car because there wasn’t a stain before I got there. So now I am stuck with a leaking intake manifold gasket and I put over 200 miles on my car in three days. So I really can’t have this problem.

Dashboard rolling up security light flashes while driving at normal speed rpm needle flickers transmission sound like it’s slipping weatherstripping around doors falling off two windows won’t work power steering fluid leak causing hard steering water on floors and in wheel well in trunk when it rain paint peeling and fading rearview mirror fell off headlight lens popped off etc.

V6 – Intake Manifold Gasket leaking coolant externally only at this time. As Autosafety.org already knows, this is a well documented issue with the General Motors V6 for many years now. I only wish I would have known this before buying a Grand Am and an Alero which both had this problem.

THIS IS JUST ANOTHER PROBLEM TO ADD TO THE LIST THE CAR WILL NOT START THE SECURITY LIGHT IS STAYING ON HAD TO A DEALERSHIP ABOUT 3 WEEKS AGO AFTER HAVING TO HAVE IT TOWED AFTER IT SIT ALL NIGHT THE MECHANIC GOT IN AND IT STARTED RIGHT UP, NOW IT WILL NOT START AGAIN AND OF COURSE I DO NOT HAVE $200 + TO HAVE IT TOWED AND $100 + TO HAVE IT CHECKED AND WHATEVER ELSE IT WOULD COST TO HAVE IT FIXED ONCE AND AGAIN

The control knobs on the air/heating system have come off twice. Now not working except on the high control. My brakes have sqeeked for a while and seem to grab at times. The autodriver window does not work properly. My R/L blinkers do not work not do the hazard lights. They work at times and not at other times. Seems to have a short.

On 8/27/07 steering locked up while turning corner, and horn started beeping on its own. Still in auto shop, put on the second multifunction switch and cam switch. Steering wheel cracked inside according to mechanic. Already filed a complaint with the NHTSA today.

JUST PAID 900 DOLLARS FOR INTAKE GASKET REPLACEMENT.GM SAID THEY COULD DO NOTHING.PLEASE INVESTIGATE.

Intake manifold gasket (dex cool situation) which I see is a problem with MANY GM vehicles.
This repair is after settlement date inclusion so my daughter who owns the auto is looking for reimbursement.

I don\’t understand Pontiac\’s thinking when putting out this model. They have a great security feature (if the only thing in the world you have to worry about is your car being stolen) where if the car thinks it\’s been tampered with, it won\’t start (the engine will turn over but not catch). In order the then start the car, you have to sit with the key in the on position for ten minutes, the system will reset itself, and you can then start the car. Well, my car thinks it\’s been tampered with if you miss the ignition keyhole, jiggle the key too much, turn the key and the engine doesn\’t catch, open or shut the door funny, etc. So with all these wasted minutes sitting behind the wheel of my car I begin to think of all the good reasons for this wonderful security feature and I can only think of one: If I were trying to steal my own car, I wouldn\’t get any. However many bad things come to mind, like if the feature decides to act up when I\’m running for my life from someone who is trying to rob or rape me. I wish Pontiac would disconnect this for me.

I bought this car in May of 2002 and since then I have had to take my car in to have the heating/airconditioning unit fixed 3 times, but looked at more than that. I have had a new rack and pinion steering put in. My keyless entry had gone out. My driver side widow was not working properly. I have air coming through my windows and all they say is, it normal wear and tear and it is coming from the holes in the mirrors. The back seatbelts don\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\’t lock, and they don\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\’t seem to care that I am concerned for the saftey of my children who sit back there. I have tried other car to see if their seatbelts lock and they do just fine. I need some answers from someone or I will have to seek some justise myself.

Car will crank but doesn\’t start. The dealer ship has replace the fuil pump on 03/28/2002, the ECM on 04/09/02it also had code PO621,the knock sensor on 04/26/02,on 07/12/02 the vehical did the same thang again the dealer ship found code P1632 for the theft deterent system all they did was clear codes, the last time was on 02/27/03 they found code PO1632 and replaced ignition switch and lock cylinder and didn\’t address the code that was found. On the day we went to pick up the car it would not start they stated the keys had to be repogramed for the vehical.

Bought car with around 32000 miles. 6 months later, put in shop with service engine light on and trac off light on. It started missing right away so took to shop. They kept nearly 3 weeks and said it was head problems and fuel injector exhaust valves cylinder. They claimed to fix. 7 or 8 months later put back in shop with oil leaks. Have to get more info on this problem don

1. On the a/c problem the temp control broke off in my hand for no reason. Small problem but using cheep plastic parts was the reason for the break.2. The body problem the doors were not properly alligned and you can hear the wind passing over the doors. They said that there is nothing that they could due to fix it.3. The Other problem (igntion) was addressed 3 times the ignition would not recognize the key which would set off the security system causing the car not to start all & security light to stay on. 3 times the ignition switch was replaced and the keys reprogrammed.4. The wheel problem was addressed soon after the car was bought. The wheels would shake going down the road Pontiac rebalanced the wheels & tires so the tires were not properly balanced from factory.5. The engine problem is a bad oil leak comming out from under the intake manifold this problem has not been fixed yet but the straw that broke the camels back. We are still waiting to see what Pontiac is planning to do about the problem.6. The brake problem has to due with the rotors warpping under reagular use. The steering wheel would shake going down the hwy and get worse as you applied the brakes. There is a bulliten out on this problem. The fix was to turn the rotors and put on new pads. Seems to me that since the same rotors warpped once turnning them is just a bandaid to get rid of the problem till the car is out of warranty.

** Gas gauge not working properly, dealership changed sender sensor, that’s where they charged me. 8 days later still not fixed took back to dealership, changed fuel sending unit did not charge me, 5 days later took back in still not fixed fuel tank module bad, did not charge me and this fixed the problem.** Cooling system; when had in for fuel gauge problem they found the intake leak (4-25-02) repaired. ** 12-11-02 water pump went out @ 77024 miles. total bill 301.86 warranty company paid 238.70. ** 6-22-04; intake gasket went out again. miles 136947 total price 844.56 I paid full price. I feel this should be paid by GM, if they would have had the correct gasket when it went out the 1st time I would not have had to pay for this. ** instrument display went out 6-5-03 miles 96477. It is now going out again. **Brakes 4-25-02 50887 brakes and rotors changed. On 7-8-02 miles 59220 took back to shop for vibration and pulsation problem, they fixed for free (brake shim??) service bulletin. I have had my brakes changed 3 more times since then with rotor being turned/replaced each time. I have copy’s of all invoices if you need them. There have been a few other things but it is so hard to figure out where they need to go. Thanks for your time, Ronda Kelly

My 2001 ponitac grand am se1 was involved in an accident where i was making a left turn as was a vehicle approaching in the opposite direction. i entered the intersection at less than 10 mph and the vehicle from the other direction visually estimated to be travelling at 35 mph moved from the dedicated turn lane out into the intersection where we collided. the front end of the 1989 cadillac el dorado struck the rear passenger side door and rear wheel. as a result spun the rear end of my vehicle approx. 90 degrees, pivoting off of the front wheels. the airbags deployed upon impact. the driver of the cadillac applied his brakes and left approx 16 feet of skid marks prior to impact. given this information and the low speeds of both vehicles the airbags should not have deployed.*ak

On three separate occasions in the past two months, my vehicle has turned off while driving. the steering wheel locked up and the car turned off. on all three occasions i was coming either to a stop sign or traffic light with my foot on the brake, about to make a right turn. thankfully, i was not yet in the intersection when this happened. i believe the issue is related to the ignition switch recall issued by gm. some time in 2015 i did make an appointment with northstar chevrolet in clifton park, ny to have the issue resolved, assuming that they were actually going to repair the ignition. i notified them that i did have issues with turning the key when trying to turn the car on. they said it was not related, that it was an old car and the ignition had worn a certain way - that's why the key didn't always turn easily. they said the recall repair was to make the hole in the key smaller so that i couldn't have heavy items attached to my key. they looked at what i did have on my key chain and said the weight should be fine, it was mainly for people that had dozens of keys or very heavy items on the key ring. i left without any changes to my key. now, in march and april 2017 i've had more serious issues with my car turning off. i also have problems with turning my car on if the key is not pushed up in the ignition before being turned. this is the case even without anything else attached to the key when trying to turn the car on. i am fearful of driving my car without having this properly repaired, yet the dealership insists that they are only permitted to perform the specified repair to the key itself, but will not be able to make any repairs to the car itself under the recall, even though it's the ignition switch on the car that is not making proper contact to turn the car on. i need my faulty ignition switch replaced before i have an accident.

'm writing to notify gm about a dangerous issue with my 2001 pontiac grand am. the security system activates preventing the car to stop for 10 minutes until it resets, causing many work related issues. this security issue prevents the fuel pump from activating, allowing the car to start. the problem has gotten so severe, the car now shuts down mid drive while on the interstate. living in louisville, tn away 10 hours from home, i have no other choice but to keep using this vehicle to get back and forth from work. now i'm forced to remain in the outside lane to quickly get over onto the shoulder when the car shuts off. this has happened no less than 15 times a week, almost causing an almost fatal accident. i've been to a trusted mechanic where we replaced the ecm two separate times, but the issue still persists. has there been many issues reported about the car stopping in the middle of a drive?

Blinkers just stop working somtimes for hours and then back on while driving and a cadillac converter is making noise.

We are having issues when we use our turn signals. most of the time our signals don't won't work unless we wiggle (with force) our hazard light button. then we hear buzzing and crackling that is mostly continuous in our hazard button. this happens when we are driving or sitting still. it does stop clicking when we shut the car off, but does often continue when we start our car back off. the crackling/buzzing noise has went on for as long as 15 minutes . i'm sure it would have gone on for longer, but we wiggled the hazard button and places a folded piece of paper to lodge it quiet. we have an extremely hard time using our turn signals at times, they just quit working unless we wiggle our hazard light button.. all of this happens with normal day to day driving. *tr

Was driving down city street car was in motion and car died leaving me with no steering or power. has not started since. have narrowed down to ignition or security it has killed a battery. turns over but will not start. getting very costly.

My steering column makes a vibrating noise... this happened after the red security light came on the left part of the dash.... also since i purchased it in july there has been an issue with the key not starting it right away usually have to wait ten seconds or even up to 30 seconds before you can start my vehicle. i'm looking to prevent any accident before it occurs. i do not want my car locking up on me. i prefer safety over speed.

You have to mess with the key to get it to start and it overloads my fuel pump and makes the fuse blow and i have to get it fixed. the key has been like that since before i purchased it and according to the original owner it's been doing that since he purchased it.

The car starts up and then shuts off after 5 seconds. the security system will not let it stay running.

I was involved in a car accident as a passenger on 10/25/2001 in which the steering column locked up on our 2001 grand am as we were driving causing us to lose control of the car and flip down hill. my father and my brother were front passengers and i was the rear seat passenger of the car and was ejected out of the back window. the airbags never deployed. after being ejected from the rear window of the car i suffered a broken pelvic bone, a bleeding brain with permanent brain damage, internal bruises on my lungs, my liver, and my kidneys, and the top 3 discs and bottom 3 discs in my back popped out of place. i had to be air lifted to shands hospital in gainesville florida where i remained until 11/20/2001. during the the time between 10/25/2001 and 11/20/2001 i was in a coma, had to be fed intraveinously, and was placed on life support. i was transported to shands rehab hospital in gainesville fl, on 11/20/2001 and was released from shands rehab hospital 11/30/2015 in wheelchair and body brace. i had to have outpatient vocational rehabilitation therpay due to my brain injuries after being released from the hospital. i recently learned that the vehicle that i was involved in the accident has been recalled by general motors due to a faulty iginition switch that causes the vehicle to lose power which causes drivers to not be able to control the steering of the vehicle and am submitting this claim because of this finding. there have been several other claims agains general motor regarding the same vehicle model. i have uploaded the fhp report as well as pictures post accident of the vehicle.

Where the steering pinion attaches to the frame rusted out and broke making right turns impossible because of the pinion moving and the inner tie rod hitting the frame. pretty much making the car worthless. *tr

My car was not included in the nhtsa action number: ea02037 for the same issue. my car was manufactured 1 day after the deadline of 5/1/2001. the turn signals work intermittently. we are able to get them to function by putting the signal into the "on" position and pressing the hazard light button on and off and the turn signal will stay on until switched off. i contacted the dealer and the manufacturer and both confirmed i was not included in the recall. i found out this was happening prior to my purchase of the vehicle after purchase. i do not feel gm complied fully with recalling vehicles and still put in faulty switches after the date as i am not the only one that has the problem and wasn't included in the recall. *tr

We have received the recall letter dated october 2014. we had complained about the safety of the vehicle as it shut off as we were going down the interstate across a bridge which has a bump on it we lost all power and was like old fashion steering. we coasted to the end of the exit ramp and had to play with the key and after awhile it started and this continued off and on and they told us had to turn key for 10 min on aux till light blinked and reset itself they told us would reset security system and start. which it did most of the time was a pain an inconvenient. we got rid of it in 06 or 07. it was interesting and gm said it was our problem. haven't purchased another gm vehicle. had a lot of close calls with this vehicle....but was our issue they told us.... *tr

1) 7/1/2011, vehicle would not start. vehicle towed to shop costing owner $180.20 2) 12/9/2013, vehicle would not start. vehicle towed to shop costing owner $252.51 plus lost of wages for time away from job costing owner $26.91, and forced to get rental vehicle costing owner $73.04 for rental car fees and gasoline 3) 3/11/2014, vehicle would not start. vehicle towed to shop, unknown why vehicle would not start. no repair at shop, but owner lost time and wages away from job costing $2.99, and forced to get rental vehicle costing owner $46.09 for rentalcar. owner advised keys for vehicle would need service from dealer 4) 4/8/2014, keys sent to progressive chevrolet by repair shop costing owner $267.78 5) 11/8/2014, owner received recall notice #14350 from general motors. owner scheduled appointment for service relating to recall and received two new ignition keys. vehicle seems to start, so far, just fine. with all of the aforementioned problems with owner vehicle, i should be reimbursed for all of the trouble, lost of wages, towing fees, service repair fees, and not to mention stress of not knowing what was wrong with the vehicle. with general motors knowingly producing a defective vehicle, and ignoring the fact that the owner's vehicle could have caused serious bodily injury or death to owner, but stood by and did nothing for the thirteen years that i have owned the vehicle is really a travesty. gm took their chances hoping that this problem would go away, but it didn't, people have lost their lives. others have been injured, and others, such as myself, have lost piece of mind and confident in gm. i paid nearly $30,000.00 for my pontiac grand am. i am not sure why all of the problems related to starting the vehicle occurred. once the recall issue was addressed, the owner's vehicle starts just fine, so far. *tr

When i bought the car it was used with just a little over 100000 miles on it. i noticed anti-freeze leaking out of the intake gasket onto the engine. it got worse so i had my mechanic replace it with a oem part. he warned me against it saying that all the 6"s had this problem because the orig. gasket that gm used was faulty and that he suggested a replacement gasket that was better but at over $100. compared to the $35. oem i went with the oem and two years later i ha to have it done again. this time i had the $100. gasket used and no more problems. seems that all the pontiac 6 cyl. between somewhere around 1998/1999 through 2002/-- have this problem. my son has a chevy corsica with the same engine and his blew at 124000. anyway i spent over $2300 fixing a gasket that should have never leaked. i believe that is was bad when i bought it because it had stop leak in the cooling system the i thought was a little strange. *tr

On my way to work (2nd shift) in rush hour traffic as i was preparing to merge onto the highway the car simply shut-off blocking traffic. (i was eventually - 20 minutes - able to get help to push the car off the road.) everything shut off and car would not restart....everything including the power-steering. this has happened one other time and the vehicle is now nothing more then a two-ton paperweight in my garage - and about as useful. on a second occasion it cut-off as i pulled into traffic and almost caused a collision...fortunately i was able to coast far enough to get into the turn lane and then when traffic cleared to push it back off the road. an online search told me this is a well-known problem with the security system of the vehicle but there seems no agreement on a solution/fix. evidently the security system simply does not recognize the key (even when it is the correct one) and thinks the car is being stolen and thus shuts itself off. what would/could have happened if this occurred while i was at speed in traffic? if pontiac knows about this why is there no recall....does someone have to die first? *tr

The car was purchased with 26,700 miles from my father. he bought it new. there were no major problems with it other than the a/c, which needed to be recharged. the car had approximately 28,500 miles when the engine shutdown suddenly. it happened on a busy highway where the speed limit is 55 mph. the car could would not restart after several frantic attempts. finally, it started after 10 minutes and ran long enough to drive it three miles to the house. the ignition switch was replaced and the car ran well for another 200 miles before the engine shutdown suddenly again. a battery cable had overheated due to a poor factory terminal connection that only used a portion of the cable strands to supply power to the main fuse box under the hood. the cable was replaced. the car ran well for another 300 miles when suddenly all the instrument warning lights started flashing, but the engine didn't shutdown. the battery was damaged during the battery cable meltdown. it was replaced. the car was driven the next day and the engine shutdown suddenly again. it eventually restarted. it failed again after making a left turn on the way home. it restarted and was parked on the driveway. a search on the internet indicated the problem could be caused by the body control module (bcm), which is located under the dashboard on the passenger side. the bcm was removed and one of the three electrical connectors (pink) was found to be wet and corroded at three of the male and female connector pins. it could not be determined where the water came from. the connector pins were dried and the corrosion removed. a dielectric grease was applied to avoid further corrosion. the car has operated properly, so far. possibly, the passlock system was intermittently losing a critical sensor input due to corroded bcm terminals. investigate the faulty battery cable connector, and water corroding the bcm terminals. *tr

We had a flat in our driveway on one of a set of goodyear gt hr tires which were purchased in june 2007. upon changing the tire and inspecting it, the tire had large cracks all around the perimeter on the interior side. we checked the other tires and saw similar cracks. we took it to the goodyear dealer where they were purchased and the owner found it leaking at one of these cracks. i commented that i was dismayed that these tires dry rotted at only three years, to which he stated that, "they aren't dry rotted; these are stress fractures". i asked why they would have these fractures after only three years and what caused them,and he gave me no answer. the dealer seemed to have no concern that these tires are failing in this way in only three years and only wanted me to purchase replacements, offering a very small discount, to which we declined. we will be replacing these tires as soon as possible, and are aware of the tread wear and miles they have on them, but we are concerned that others are driving on tires that they think are fine because they aren't very old. they shouldn't be cracking like this as we've had many sets of tires and have never seen this before. had that tire gone out any other place than in my drive, i am afraid to think what would have happened. we still have to drive it to have new tires put on, which i greatly fear. this tire was dated 0907. *tr

I have a 2001 pontiac grand am gt v6 3400. the passlock/security system has proven to be faulty on numerous occasions. in the recent past the security light would randomly flash preventing me from starting my car for up to 10-15 minutes. it has more recently taken a turn for the worse. now my security light is on solid. i can turn my car on but within 1-2 seconds it shuts off. i have not had any theft attempts, yet my car thinks i am trying to steal it. i believe the computer is faulty and recognizing problems that do not exist. along with the problem of the car not starting, the keyless entry (also provided by my gm dealer, not second hand) is useless. i have no control over my car, for it is in shutdown. if i were to replace the ignition cylinder it would cost $200 for the part and another $2000 to get the part replaced professionally. i wish gm could stand behind this faulty product that so many people like myself have struggled with. i am a proud owner of my car and would love nothing more than to keep it, but i would like to be able to drive it. passlock/security systems in this model are faulty and i'm not alone in this recognition. *tr

Gm recall #03043 nhtsa action#03v327000 hazard warning switch overheats leading to solder joint cracking which in turn leads to an open circuit that causes intermittent/inoperative use of hazard lights/turn signals they have refused my recall because they say the car was built 10 days after the cutoff of 670,740 units that were affected. *tr

Automatic driver side and passenger side windows both partially down, driving around 35mph, when passenger side window falls sideways into door. first time this has happened to my car. unable to get window back into place, will have to take it to mechanic or dealer to get it fixed. *tr

Periodically, the car will turn over, but not start. this occurs about every 10 days. if i leave the key in the "on" position for 10-15 minutes, the car will start when attempted. i received the tip about leaving the key on from another grand am owner that experienced the same issue. *tr

Multifunction switch went bad. it is a known problem from gm. however, there was never a recall on this switch because gm doesn't want to pay the costs. it could cause problems with turn signal blinkers posing a safety hazard to the driver and other motorists. i had to take my vehicle to the garage and parts were replaced for $316.40. *tr

Ignition lock/security will not allow car to start and in rare circumstances lead to instant shutdown. *tr

The very same problems/issues are occurring with/in my 2001 pontiac grand am. i am the only owner of my vehicle and have experienced every single issue others have wrote about. from the security issue to the driver side seat not moving at all..... gm really needs to research/investigate these matters and place re-calls on all of them asap. this is a very serious matter and apparently they are overlooking this completely. *tr

I have a 2001 pontiac grand am that i have had issues with since i bought the car. now for the second tim in three years i have had to replace the passlock sensor and the ignition switch cylinder. this fix has cost me over $700.00 each time not including the tow. i am a mother of two kids that works full-time and goes to school part time, this problem has drained me of money that i use to support my children. i have missed work and school because of this problem. there are forums that i have looked at and read with people going through the same issue. i have taken it to a gm dealer and also a mechanic in order to fix this problem that's when i realized it was the same issue. i compared notes. i believe that this is going to be happening again in the next few years according to my mechanic, who has also heard people discussing this same issue. *tr

Security light comes on while driving. at least once a day the car will not turn over and i must reset by turning to the on position for 10 minutes. this has left me stranded in unfamiliar situations waiting for this to reset. upon the first two times of this happening (before i had a repairman tell me of the resetting) i had the car towed to a shop and over 400 dollars spent on a fuel pump. the second time they replaced the fuel pump and the third time after being towed it started at the shop. the fourth time it happened and towed to a different repair shop and they were the ones to tell me of the reset procedures. now it happens about every day. *tr

I never received the recall on the exterior flashers. had to have interior and exterior flashers changed at my expense. also have had rotors and brakes changed 6 times in last 1 1/2 yrs. was told its a problem but not on recall list. *tr

This is my procedure of start engine. turn on the key, i can see the sign of security. wait 10minutes until lights off. turn off the key and start the engine. that is too annoying me. i already towed my car 3 times and replace the fuel pump. it costs $500. is that not serious? recently it occurs too often!!! *tr

About a year after i got the car, which was around 3 years ago, i was in a parking lot & turned it off for a few minutes and then when i went to start it again it would not start. also, the security light was flashing. that happened again 6 months later and then 3 months after that and then every month. then about 2-3 weeks ago the interior chime and interior lights wouldn't shut off. it was exactly what it would do if i had just put my key in and the door was open. however, my key was not in and the doors were closed. we disconnected a fuse and that at least made the noise and lights go off and kept my battery from dying. my radio also didn't work but i could live with that. then about a week and a half ago my car started locking itself every 30 seconds and the trunk opened every time the car locked. i opened the drivers side door and smoke came pouring out. i called a neighbor and he disconnected my battery and took my car to his house to work on it. he called me back the next day and said that a module underneath my passenger side dash was misfiring and if we had not disconnected the battery when we did the car would have caught fire. i saw the old computer module. half of the plastic was melted away and the wires were burnt. he got a new one from a junk yard for $50 for me and reset it, with a machine from work, to my passlock. that seems to have fixed the problem but i've read complaints from other owners of pontiac grand ams and the same things are happening to them. i just listed a complaint and let them know what i did to fix it but if this is happening to that many people someone could get hurt if they don't know what to get fixed. my car almost caught fire and it wasn't even on! *tr

Related to recall #03v327000 had my hazard switch replaced via recall. new switch is same as old switch and is defective. pontiac won't replace. purchase new switch yesterday and is also defective. replacement switches are also defective. recall does not remedy problem. *tr

Change oil light will come on early, about after 1,000 miles - before the typical 3,000 miles oil should be changed (i change my oil every 3,000 miles). *tr

Security feature will not allow the car to start, you have to turn the key to acc. for 10 minutes before it will start , in my mind this is serious safety problem , what if your having an emergency and do not have 10 minutes to wait or you have to sit in the hot car with an infant this problem should be addressed. *tr

There is a crack in the fuel tank. the fuel tank is not made of steel it is made of some type of plastic. there is a recall on the same make, model, and year of my car. but my car does not fit the vin number. i believe this to be unsafe and hazardous. i have talked to many people they have not heard of this issue of the fuel tank having a crack. i think that it should be recalled and the gm pay for the repair. *tr

My husband bought me a 2001 grand am gt in october 05' @ 80,000 miles. i had problems with the front driver and passenger windows in a year. the driver side window regulator popped and blew out then about 2wks later the passenger side window went out!! my ignition switch doesn't work, i can take my keys out of the ignition while the car is still on. my signal lights went out i replaced them. my driver side seat does not maneuver @ all. my fog light in the front on the left side has came off completely while the car was still parked. i have noticed other grand ams @ drive through restaurants who's windows don't work and you have to get you're food through the door!! this is completely unacceptable and should be fixed free of charge to all owners asap!! its a shame we pay so much for so little!! *tr

Pontiac grand am 200, 99,333 miles all highway. third time replacing the ignition-tumblers, and housing to ignition. this car may run forever if the ignition would do its job first. this is a serious problem for all consumers. just replace the switch with a push button, thus by passing the passlock problem. *tr

Three times passlock ignition lock needs to be replaced. tumbler internals replaced. problem seems to be a gm product dependability design flaw. $300-$500 per repair. the first time was under warranty. i am only 35 years old and love pontiac but i will never stand behind a product that pontiac will not stand behind themselves. very unprofessional and very disappointing. p.s. pontiac will eventually fold due to poor sales, poor service, and a lack of effective pm. sincerely, dr. howard *tr

A few years back, i had a problem in which my rpms would rise insanely when i was stopped at a light, and even when i put my car in park. it was as if i was "flooring it". i took it to the dealer. they said it was a head gasket problem. luckily, it was still under warranty, as i only had about 45,000 miles on it. i took it home after it was "fixed", and it continued to do the same thing. i took it back to the dealer, and they said that they fixed the problem and that it will be ok. i took it back home and it has pretty much never stopped. it tends to do it more in the summer as opposed to the winter. recently, the car was leaking coolant. i took it back to the dealer. i was once again told that it was the head gasket. my car is no longer under warranty, so i had to pay $1600 to get it fixed. 2 head gasket problems within a matter of 2 years? that seems like something that should never happen. after getting that fixed, i take it home. it runs fine for about 2 days, and then starts pulling some crazy stuff. the service engine soon light came on, although there weren't any noticeable issues. the light went off 2 days later. after that, i started experiencing other problems. my car has a serious lack of power when going up a hill. if i step on the gas a little more, the service engine soon light will flash. it doesn't stay on, it just flashes for about a minute. whenever i come to a stop, my car tends to violently shake. i'm afraid to take it back to the dealer to see what's wrong, because i'm afraid i'll have to pay even more money for something that wasn't wrong prior to taking it the 1st time. *tr

Between march 2007 and november 2007 the regulators on all 4 electric windows have had to be replaced. the car had approximately 30,000 miles on it when the first window failed and currently has 42,000 miles. i have never had to replace a regulator in any other vehicle i have owned and these are vehicles i have owned as brand new vehicles with up to 150,000 miles on them before they were sold. *tr

I have a 2001 pontiac grand am se the plastic pieces to hold the window in place have broken. my window just dropped one day out after i rolled it down. it seems i'm not the only having this problem this year with the window just dropping out of place or off track. *jb

I was rolling down my driver's side window when i heard a pop and the window glass fell. it shattered and i received several cuts. a week later i was rolling up the passenger rear window ( a window that i rarely use) when i heard another pop and the window refused to go up or down. i was told that the window regulator also broke in that window. now i have 2 windows in my car that cannot be used. i replaced the window glass, but am unable to replace due to the $330 cost of each for a total of $660. *jb

Tl 2001 grand am. went on a website other than nhtsa. she was told by the dealer that they will check it to see what they can find. the vehicle is at the repair shop and they advised her that they are unable to diagnose it. the vehicle started on its own. she is the second owner, 89,000. she owned it almost 2 weeks. while driving, the vehicle shut off, no warning, no warning lights on the dash. she was able to coast the vehicle to the side of the road. she sat for 5 minutes and was able to start it. 24 hours later, she drove it , no problem. she attempted to start the vehicle and was unable to do so. 2 hours later it would not start and the tow company check to see if it was the battery or alternator. the vehicle was towed to her home 24 hours later, it didn't start. the mechanic attempted to restart it and it did start 48 hours later. the diagnostic computer also didnt determine the failure. rk

I purchased my 2001 grand am gt in 2002. so far since i've owned the car, i seem to replace the breaks every 10,000 miles or every year, i have had the rotors replaced twice within the last 5 years, replaced the alternator and fuel pump. now, my abs lights continue to go on and most recently, my car will not start it seem every two weeks (i hope i am not away from home when this happens) - the security light has been coming on and have to keep the key in the "on" position for 10 minutes and then try to start the car - my garage told me it was a security code problem that only the dealer can fix. i have only 90,000 miles on the car and now, i need a rack and pinion which will cost me another $900.00 (i spent approx $500 dollars on the car in the last 6 months). my break pad wear out at least yearly (i am retired and don't even drive the car long distance). now my abs lights are constantly coming on, even though the garage said he found nothing wrong and i need to take it to the dealer. the car is pretty - but will never buy another pontiac again - i can't afford to keep it in the garage every three months (so it seems) and need a reliable car - not one that doesn't start once every two weeks because now my security systems is messed up. also, have had problems with 1 and 2 on the ac settings (wouldn't work at all) - and of course, paid to have that fixed. please help me.

On 4/3/07 my pontiac grand am was worked on at greiner pontiac in victorville california because a constant ticking noise was coming from the console when i used my turn signals, also air bag light came on and the area where the radio is became very hot. on 4/3/07 greiner pontiac found the multi-function switch to be failing. greiner pontiac replaced the switch. when they finished my car, as i drove away i noticed that the steering wheel was tight and made a tick noise when i turned. i went back to greiner to inform them of this, and they said that is normal from replacing that switch. on 8/27/07 the steering locked up on me while driving and the horn started beeping on its own. i called greiner when i returned home and they told me it sounded like the power steering pump went out. they advised me to take it to ideal auto center who does work on gmc vehicles. took my vehicle to ideal auto center approx 10:10 in the morning of 8/27/07. on 8/28/07, tuesday afternoon i called ideal , talked to mike he stated when greiner pontiac put the multi-function switch in on 4/3/07 they had put it in wrong and that my car should have never left their lot that day in the condition they left it in. on 8/31/07 , approx. 11:30 am, i called ideal auto center, spoke to mike, he stated that my car should be ready in about an hour. i then went down to ideal auto, and mike stated that my car should be ready shortly. about and hour and a half went by, i asked the cashier clerk if she can check the status of my car. she told me that the steering wheel was broke, had a crack . when their mechanic tried to un-loosen the steering wheel, a loud noise sounded off. ideal auto said when greiner did the work on 4/3/07 they tightened the steering wheel too tight which caused pressure to crack the steering wheel in side. *jb

My 2001 grand am se hit around 98,000 kms and has been revving at 2,500 to 3,000 rpms while idling and while driving over revs and you need two feet on the brake. have replaced intake manifold, one sensor, one valve, and $1,000 later my car still does the same. this is not safe while transporting children and with winter coming it should make for a scary ride. *tr

The remote keyless entry system in the 2001 pontiac grand am, and other late models, have a defect causing the car not to start. the system fails in times of high heat or humidity, causing the fuel system to shut off, thus making the car inoperable. only dealers are certified to identify and repair the problem, and they do not instruct owners on how to bypass system in order to get it started. the bypass method is posted on numerous websites, yet gm and their dealers instruct owners to pay to have the vehicle towed in and charge for repairs that are not covered in the warranty. this issue should be part of a recall to implement a permanent fix, versus owners having to pay hundreds of dollars every year to have this issue fixed.*jb

The passlock sensor is going out of my car again this is the second time this has happened... the car will not start until i have reset the system, i had the ign switch replaced 3 years ago and it started acting up again about 4 months ago. it makes it really hard for me to go anywhere in the summer and having to set in 95 degree heat waiting for 10 minutes for the car to reset....on the incident date i am putting today's date since it did it this morning before i came to work but it has been doing it for 4 months at least now. *tr

This is the last of many times this has happened to the car. it is a 2001 pontiac grand am. when i go to start it , turn the key in the ignition' the security light flashes on the dashboard. the owners manual says this means the built in anti theft system is malfunctioning , and to turn the key in the on position ,and leave it there for 10 minutes until the security light stops flashing. then turn the key off and start the car. so far it has worked every time, but i have been stuck in some rather unsafe places for 10 minutes or more at a time waiting for my car to start. and i never know when its going to happen. it can happen three times in a row and then not happen again for a month. no rhyme or reason. very unsecure.d *ak

We had an intake manifold leak on our 2001 grand am. the car had less tan 75,000 miles on it. when we got it back it had a cracked intake manifold and coolant in the oil. since that time it has been in another dealers shop and not fixed. *tr

Car will not start after the security light has been flashing on and off thought no big deal the first time just a another everyday problem had car fixed and 500.00 dollars later the car is repaired and back up and running. then it just keeps doing the same old thing wont start just have to turn the key in the on position for several minutes and it will eventually start which is becoming a very big nuisance to me and my family. i believe this is a unsafe problem that needs to be fixed before someone can get hurt or killed, due to the fact of the car shutting off going down the road which with no motor running you have no power for your anti lock brakes and your steering. i have read several complaints under the recall problems but this seems like an ongoing process that needs to be taken care of. need to mention that it gets expensive for the repair bills and haul bills which occurred the first time this happen. i believe this should be a recall due to the danger and unsafe being of the car because you don't know where you'll be when the car decides to not start or if your in an emergency situation. any information on this would help. *tr

I own a 2001 grand am se 2.4l. i've had nothing but troubles with this car since i bought it. here's the list of some of the things i've had to replace on the car: alternator, starter, ignition module, coils and housing unit, and now the passlock system is junk!! this car has several times put me in danger because of it stalling just after stopping or just after going after a start. which means i'm in the middle of an intersection when it stalls. i'm taking it to the dealer friday to get the passlock system fixed because my security light is on. i want this car to be recalled or to get reimbursed for the cost and time i've had to put into this car which is a lot$$$*jb

I have a 2001 pontiac grand am. i received a notice that the hazard switch was recalled and i took it to the dealer ship to have it replaced. after that i had a clicking noise that was intermittent so i took it back and they replaced it again...still have the clicking noise. then they told me it was the multi function switch. after doing some research this seems to be a known problem in the pontiac's and should be recalled along with the hazard switch. if the problem was not such a known issues i would not be complaining. matter of fact this is my first complaint ever on a vehicle. i hope pontiac realizes there is a problem before it causes fire or something that is a safety issue. however, i do think it is a default and pontiac should be reimbursing for this problem. *jb

During a routine oil change, it was found that coolent was leaking into the oil. the cause was found to be a cracked lower intake manifold gasket. as a result, i am forced to pay $800.00 to have the gasket replaced. my car only has 32,000 miles on it. there are so many people out there with the same problem. gm needs to be forced to correct an error that they are obviously aware of but refuse to correct. there are too many reports of this happening on gm vehicles for it to be a coincidence. *nm

I own a 2001 pontaic grand am that i bought in april 05 having bought it used i had it about 20 days when my service engine soon light came on took it to the dealer that i bought if from he sent it to his mechanics and the replaced the coil pack because it was reading a misfire on cylinder 4. didn't have problem for about 8 month so i thought. on dec.20,2006 started running real bad had coil pack changed, boots, housing, and spark plugs at the nice price of $200.00. in 1 day to find out stll not working right mechanic said problem is internal and the only way to fix this is replace motor which for a used one only $3300.00 unless i would like a new one for $6000.00. i feel that they have lost there minds expecting people to pay that kind of money for another junky motor when the one i have now only has 77000 miles on it it should be like the energizer bunny still going i have taken excellent care of my car i did talk to pontaic complaint line to have smoke blown up my you know what they dont care about there customers i owe to much to trade it in and can't afford to fix it so now i have a car payment and can't even drive it pontaic need to fix there junk they have on the road before somebody gets hurt or killed driving this stuff i know i will never own another if i can get rid of this. *nm

"hazard switch" recall has been replaced twice on my 2001 pontiac grand am and i am still having the same clicking noise, sounds like a turn signal, and it is getting worse. i am told by the dealership that i will need to replace the turn signal switch, that the recall has to do with the hazard light not the turn signal. the noise being heard has "always" been the turn signal noise, it just comes from the center of the car where the hazard switch is located, and i have seen plenty of reports from other individuals that are having the same issue. pontiac "gm" should have to fix this problem, not the consumer! i am also having a problem with the security light coming on and having to turn the key and wait 10 minutes before i can start my car. there is nothing that the service department will do about it because by the time you take it to be repaired they cannot find the malfunction. gm should have to fix these ongoing problems that many consumers are having with this model vehicle. *jb

Tl* - the contact's 2001 pontiac grand am gt's fan speed switch for the defroster and air conditioning wasonly working at level 4. this incident occurred on several occasions ,and she was unable to adjust the setting to 1,2, or 3. also, the driver side window was inoperable. the contact removed the panel and observed that one of the plastic window guides was broken. the contact attempted to replace the window switch,but the mechanic informed her that the failed components were the regulators. *ak

Tl* - the contact stated that while trying to accelerate the vehicle, the rpm increased to 3,000-4,000 rpm. the contact stated that the vehicle accelerates slowly and when the vehicle needs to get to about 3,000- 4,000 rpm for it to change gear. the contact also stated that the service manager of the dealership told him that the transmission is changing gears about 10 miles per hour over where it should be changing gear. the contact has taken vehicle to dealership 3 times and they have not been able to diagnose the issue. the contact states that dealership has informed him that he will have to leave vehicle for at least one day and that he will be responsible for payment of $100. - $200. for the repair. the contact said that dealership can't work on this vehicle until early january 2007 and this would have to be done during the week. the contact feels that he should not be responsible for this repair because the lemon law in the state of connecticut, where vehicle was purchased.

My 2001 pontiac grand am smelled like something was burning. i took the car to the dealership who told/showed me that the insulation on the wire harness was literally disintegrating causing an extreme fire hazard. i was told it would cost over $2000 to replace the harness. everything in the car was factory installed and the insulation should not literally be disintegrating into dust after only 5 years. *jb

I own a 2001 pontiac grand am. i have experienced several of the same problems/issues noted in previous complaints. my 1 and 2 function on the fan is no longer working, the turn signals appear to have a short/wiring problem, the driver and passenger side window motor/brackets needed to be replaced, the driver seat adjuster is broken, the(gear shaft) button that puts the car in gear(p,r,n,d) pops out frequently, driver floor has been soak and wet periodically, and numerous braking system problems(need to replace rotors and brake pads frequently, had to replace brake calipers/hubs/wheel bearings). the only problem that was covered under a recall was the turning switch, which the problem has re-occurred. i would like to see the manufacturer cover these problems that have become repetitive in several other vehicles. *jb

Well i've called and talked to the dealership that is located in lexington,ky (paul miller ford). i have talked to the sale's man that have sold this car to me that i'm having problems with that i have only been having for about three weeks now. talked to him and he told me that their wasn't nothing to be done at all... in other words there is nothing we can do for you. when i got this car they have told me that it's been checked out and there wasn't nothing wrong with it and also that a older lady had it already maintained before we got the car. the problem with the car is that it wont start when it's cold,brakes make some time of funny noise,turn the air up to level 3 for it to come on,security light is coming on,it's eating up gas really bad. i'm hoping that someone can help me then tell some bull and find a problem to my solution. also, i have a warranty on the car that i'm having problems with and i work. i'm in risk of loosening my job over this matter. no money, no car payment and no job! *nm

In november of 2005 i purchase a 2001 pontiac grand am gt. a couple of days of having the car, when i went over a bump the car stalled on me. i thought it was a one time thing. i took it back to the dealer and they told me nothing was wrong. when it happened 2 more times, i took it back to the dealer and they told me that all of my relays were bad and that it would cost me $700. out of cost pocket. they told me this when my warranty expired. i thought i had a 90 day warranty, but it turn out that i had a 30 day warranty. i think they knew what was wrong with the car, but waited until my warranty expired, so they wouldn't have to fix it. my car is only years old and it has 42k on it. so how can all of the relays be bad? they also told me that since i have been driving the car, that i could of damage the relays myself. i didn't buy the car for it to sit in the driveway, i bought it so i could drive it. i called the lemon law, they told me they only cover the engine, i also called gm corp, they called the dealer and the dealer told them that they told me they would split the cost of the relays. which they never said that, i have a witness that can state that they never offer to split the cost to repair the car. i am at the end of my rope. you are my last hope. *nm

Not a safety precaution. i drive a 2001 pontiac grand am. every car that make and year model have broken hub caps, mine included. they rattle for a while then they break in half. there has got to be some sort of defect if it's just that make and model. the noise is embarrassing and annoying. i feel that the pontiac company should look in to the problem and fix it. also, rear middle seatbelt never stayed tight. loosens very easily while my child is wearing it and when my child was in a car seat. *nm

3 instances of failure of vehicle to start, ie turns over but will not crack. 1st instance had vehicle towed to mechanic, when vehicle cranked when mechanic attempted to start, then took to dealership, they stated leaking vacuum hose, replaced hose, 2nd had to have vehicle towed after being stranded at work, dealer stated faulty ignition switch march 2006, and replaced switch. now 3rd time same problem turns over will not crank (nov 2006). *jb

I purchased a used vehicle in march 2006. at that time i was provided a "car report" that showed no accident history/clean to everything. at a later time i went to purchase new insurance and i was first alerted to an "accident". i found out the vehicle was in an accident in june 2002, over $700.00 in damage. in 2003 again, was taken to a body shop for repairs. i have tried to work with the dealership to handle this situation. i took the vehicle to one of their vendors-same outcome. my vendor same outcome--extensive damage/frame straightening etc. i asked for my money back or a new vehicle. they refused. it would cost more to fix this car than it is worth. i need some assistance. i looked them up on the bbb and they have 55 reports in 36 months. not to mention they are making a 1000% profit off of me. *jb

Grinding sound in front brakes. dealer replaced rotors at my expense. still making grinding noice. breaks seem to have been a problem since i bought the car new in 2001. recall of blinker switch. blinking (inside above radio) noise came back after 1 year. dealer says that recall was for the hazard lights not the turn signals? car won't start and security light on. have to wait 10 minutes with car in (on) position and then car will start..this information is located in the owners manual (are they expecting this problem?) dealer said at first that my key was worn out that's why it's not reading it correctly and then later stated that the sensor was bad in the ignition switch. had to replace ignition sensor switch at my expense. rear floor board behind drivers side gets wet. no known cause. recently the service vehicle soon lite came on. dealer repaired at my expense. dealer said that the headlights were out and a part was cracked. heater/ac buttons 1 and 2 do not work. recently noticed that when i drive i hear grinding sounds seems to be coming from the body of the car, like it's coming unscrewed. just took my car in for repairs of ignition switch, 4 new tires, a back seat seatbelt replacement and my drivers side automate seat adjuster was working the morning i took it in. when i picked up my car it was making a grinding sound and the seat cushion was torn. service manager says they will replace the seat cushion but they don't think they broke the seat adjuster and the service manager says that maybe the seat adjuster just decided to go on that particular day. i'm now fighting to have them repair what they broke. i will never go to nucar pontiac in delaware for repairs again. this is the worst car i've ever owned. i think most of these problems should be recalls since many people have them. i will never buy a gm car again. please someone help to make the car makers responsible for their poor workmanship. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated while parked, the abs light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealership three times to replace the bearings, which had the speed sensors attached. on the forth visit, the abs problem reoccurred. other components affected were the cruise control and the traction control. the manufacturer was contacted, and provided no resolution. the contact expressed concern because the defects represented a risk to safety.

Passlock system shorts out and ignition does not start. this happened several times, each resulting in tow & repair fees. solution: if you turn the key to the "on" position & wait 10 minutes, the security light will go solid and them disappear. the car will then start. it's still a pain, but at least it's only 10 minutes of my time. no more towing. if you want to keep this car, i highly recommend giving it a try. *nm

Passlock system shuts down fuel injectors or fuel pump for no reason. ignition switch replaced twice, module behind ignition switch replaced twice. each repair prompted by passlock system. now the fifth occurrence means another repair. each time at my cost not to mention tow bills. this problem requires a recall. *jb

Turn / flasher switch was recalled..i had it replaced by dealer and after a month it has started again with the constant clicking noise. my security system also has failed costing me $500 to have repaired..and now my auto door locks do not work , my automatic dash lights come on and off..my guess is a major wiring problem! *nm

Where to start...i have a 2001 pontiac grand am. within 2 months of buying it, my fuel pump & computer went out at the same time. next was my water pump & timing chain. then was the security system, then the turn signals, then the windows wouldn't roll down. and now my brakes are having to be replaced on a consistent basis. the only thing covered by gm was the turn signal switch. all other replacements were at my expense. after researching on this site, i see numerous complaints of the same kind. i notified gm and they refused to help at all. i explained that since there are multiple complaints for the same things, it has to be a manufacturing defect. they shrugged that off. they finally sent me a letter stating that they would no longer "entertain" any of my comments or complaints. do not buy a pontiac!!! junk city!!! *nm

Everytime there is a heavy rain the floors of my 2001 pontiac grand am gets soaked. yesterday was by far the worst of all, there was about 3 inches of standing water on the passenger side floor. my car smells of mildew and the carpet is ruined. this seems to be a common problem for this car and i would like to see something done about this. i feel like i have wasted my money and i still have 2 years of payments remaining. *nm

Front passenger side window fell off track when trying to roll up window using automatic switch. the regulator, motor and sash-frt. had to be replaced.

Twice now all of the sudden the car would not start when trying to start it. the first time the car was sitting for about 4 hours when it would not start and had to have it towed and the service garage said it was the security codes. they cleared the codes and it was fine for a few months. the next time, we turned off the car and went to start it again in a few minutes and it would not start. again we had to have it towed to the service garage and again it was the security codes. we had to have the ignition replaced in order to get it started again because it was registering that the car was being stolen in the anti-theft system. so, now about $400.00 later, i pray it does not happen again, 2 jobs rely on this one car. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated the computer module went out which caused the security system to lock the vehicle. the vehicle was disabled from starting and the horn and the alarm would continuously activate. the incident occurred 4 times and the module was replaced everytime.

Service engine soon light and coolant light came on at the same time, eventually causing the head gaskets to blow. besides having to replace the gaskets, the oxygen sensor had to be replaced as well. also, while the car was still under warranty, at 32,567 miles, the dealer found a coolant leak at the upper intake gaskets and lower intake gaskets, and replaced both gaskets, as well as the oil pump drive seal and related parts.

Both the hazard switch and multifunction switch shorted out at the same time causing the need to replace both switches. the hazard switch subsequently became a recall, but gm would not reimburse me for the multifunction switch as well. the dealer's mechanic could not tell me which switch caused the other to fail.

The turn signals and hazard lights are defective and do not work 99% of the time. i have taken it to the dealership i purchased the car from and they did not fix it for me. dealership said that it was not part of the recall. have had several tickets due to not properly using my turn signals. *jb

Security systems keeps locking my car and it won't start. they say its the hall effect sensor on the ignition switch. i just purchased this car and i love pontiacs, but i will not purchase another one if this problems isn't resolved. this has happened at least 4 times since i purchased this car. no keyless remotes came with the car so i am not sure why this is happening. this is beginning to get really frustrating. *nm

For about a year this vehicle has had a problem with the anti-theft (passlock) system, rendering it disabled until the ignition key is left in the on position for about ten minutes. it can then be started. this is dangerous as well as it is going to eventually cause a failure of the ignition system. i spoke with the service writer at my pontiac dealership and was told that it could be my ignition switch, but she had no definite answer to my problem. also, replacing the switch would cost me about $400.00. we need a recall on this problem! it seems that a lot of these cars are problematic in this area! *jb

I have had problems with my pontiac grand am for about 3 months now. i have had the fuel filter replaces, the coils, cover and plugs. 350.00 later, it is found to supposedly be the injectors. my mechanic stated he found out that a bulletin was issued for the injectors that they were having intermittent problems with them. why was there not a recall? now it is going to cost me another 650.00 for parts and labor. if there is a chronic problem, why is there not a recall or why is pontiac not replacing the parts at their expense?*jb

I just recently replaced the coolant intake in my 2001 pontiac grand am se 6 cylinder. the mechanic told me that he has seen this many times before and that it is a costly manufacturing error. i also have to replace my multi-function switch when the turn signal recall came out. i have done a little research on the coolant intake problem and as i have stated i have found that as well as my gm dealer have all noted that there is a design flaw with the gasket in it's relation to the dex-cool coolant (the coolant is acidic and eats away at the gasket which leads to coolant getting into engine or oil getting into coolant). i would like to looked at further. *jb

It started with a very annoying fast clicking noise. it got worse and worse! then, smoke started coming out of the steering column. i had the hazard switch replaced under the recall. i took it to the dealer today and they told me that it is my multifuction switch, it shorted out the hazard switch, which i already had replaced. now, i am getting charged 315.00 to get it fixed! i have seen many many complaints on many years of the grand am. you would figure that if the company knew about it, then they would take the time and money to correct the problem, the right way. i have told everyone that i know about this, and not to ever buy a pontiac they don't take care of their consumers!! *nm

2001 pontiac grand am, went to start my car and the engine cranks, but it seems like i'm out of gas, and won't start. the problem is that the rke (remote keyless entry) system has a defect in it that causes car not to start. as of now there is no recall on the passlock systems. as for a fix, the experts are honestly not sure. the mechanics i have spoken to can't figure it out and the only fix that seems to work is one found on a discussion thread: to reset the computerized system, put key in the ignition and leave it in 'on' position for about ten minutes. then turn it off, and try - it should start then. warning: continued resetting of the computer this way will eventually damage computer and will cost lots to replace/fix. is pontiac going to replace or fix my computer when i get it messed up by resetting it like i described above? so many problems with the passlock system. *jb

I have had a failure with my multi-function switch causing my turn signal sound to constantly be going off. a couple of times, my steering column has started smoking from this. it is also a distraction from paying attention to driving. *jb

I have a 2001 pontiac grand am se, and three times last year (2005), and currently (09 may 2006), my car is having problems with the dreaded passlock system. the system is supposed to stop thieves from stealing my car. all it has done is prevent me from driving it. multiple times, i have had to sit for 10+ minutes waiting for the system to reset in order to drive. once, the security light flashed on while i was driving and the car suddenly shut off. this is getting to be a severe safety hazard, as the car loses power steering and power brakes, leaving me in a perilous position should the fault continue to occur. *nm

Driver's side exterior mirror suddenly detached upon being bumped by a person's hip as she walked by my parked car. it was a very light bump, yet the large internal bolts holding the mirror in place snapped cleanly in half, leaving the mirror dangling by the power cords only. the car's body/exterior is otherwise in excellent condition. no prior injury/bumping to the car's mirror had occurred to cause or explain any sort of weakening of the attachment bolts. i have since spoken with 2 other people who had the same thing happen with similar surprisingly light contact on their grand ams. one, when she went through an automated car wash. the other, as she was merely driving down the road (wind forces.) none of these vehicles had been in any sort of accident that would have caused weakening of the mounting hardware. nor is it a 'wear and tear' type issue. yet only very minor pressure caused the bolts to break easily. the mirrors had to be held on with duct tape and/or cords to keep them from flopping around and damaging the car's exterior until repair could be sought. i had to hold on to it manually (in very cold weather) to keep it from banging around on the body of my car, until i could secure it as much as possible (with medical iv tubing, off all things.) pontiac claims that this falls under the category of a 'cosmetic' repair...that it would not constitute a safety recall issue (?!!)...and so refuses to repair the problem at their cost. they insist on charging full price. there must be some sort of defect in the bolts attaching these mirrors to allow them to give way so easily under such little force. this creates a very serious traffic safety hazard, as it can happen during the course of normal driving, putting the driver (as well as surrounding drivers) at serious immediate risk of an mva. i have been unsuccessful in reaching anyone in authority at pontiac willing to address this issue. *nm

Driver's side window regulator failed. told by services that in order to replace the regulator the motor needed replaced also. quoted over $600 for fix. *nm

The day after the car was in for recall on the hazard switch the wire leading to the horn, cruise control and drivers airbag became bound up and have shorted out at the clock spring. horn and cruise control inoperative, i assume the airbag is inoperative as well. *nm

The a/c- heater speed control selection 1 and 2 stopped working in 2002 shortly after i purchased my vehicle. on april 10,2006, the selections 3 and 4 are also not working. this is now the 9th probolem i've had with my vehicle. to include both power window brackets breaking, my hazard flasher, transmission, steering, and a/c. i've unknowingly had jackson auto group of hawaii do repairs without so much as a word about the recalls. what proactive steps have been taken to notify the dealers about the recalls and defects? *nm

I purchased my 2001 grand am gt second hand in september 04. the 1 previous owner was my mechanic's brother in-law and has been well maintained when he owned it as well as since i have owned it. my problems started as soon as i left the lot. within a month the car had been back into the dealership to have break pads replaced and rotors re-surfaced. my breaks have made a constant rubbing/grinding noise and no amount of work has solved the problem. i also have this intake manifold gasket issue. in december of 05 the low coolant light began coming on as well as the service engine soon light. i attempted to add coolant but the cap to the coolant tank was badly broken and required the replacement of the entire tank - since the cap would not come off even with a mechanics help. this solved the problem for a couple of months - but in february 06 the coolant alarm started again - i added more coolant and continued to drive it for another month. when the coolant alarm sounded again in march i took it to my mechanic who found the coolant leak from the intake manifold. $800-$900 to fix the problem. this was the second intake manifold he found on a gm car the same day and he told me there is a service bulletin on this. why is gm not being forced to re-call this? come on - i have been researching for 1 day and found hundreds of examples of this problem. i am a single mother on a very tight budget - owe more on this piece of $)%& than it is worth as it is! my car has been parked for a month and i am bumming rides while i make monthly payments on a pretty car - nice to look at sitting in my driveway ! *nm

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle intermittently stalled, without warning, while driving 70-75mph. the vehicle restarted after waiting about five minutes. also, the fuel gauge showed an inaccurate reading and no more than seven dollars of gasoline can be pumped into the tank before the pump shuts off. the vehicle was seen by the service dealer who was unable to duplicate or diagnose the problem.

1. a flaw in the 2001 pontiac grand am passlock security system thinks the car owner is trying to steal the car and shuts off the fuel to the car, making it necessary to turn the key to the on position and wait 15-20 min before the car will start... Bought car 10-06, has failed to start 8 times, have replaced $2300 in various parts for mechanics trying to get started. all said that vehicle wasn't getting fuel. dealership in asheville nc, even told me i needed a new motor. quote $3000 to $5000. i towed to a reputable mechanic and car started right up. what if i had bought that motor. i started researching on the internet. 1000's of people are having this problem. several times mone was towed and would start when mechanic went to fix it. was told can't fix what isn't broken. 2 weeks ago did it again. just won't start. had it towed. started up when mechanic went to work on it. did it again last week. i followed advice from website. leave ignition on for 10 minutes for passlock security to reset. it worked!!! this is definitely a problem for 1000's of people. who can keep getting towed, buying expensive parts not needed, missing work, and not to mention what it does to your mentally, dealing with this over and over. *nm

The coolant system has a continual leak. it needs to be replaced at least every month. faulty ignition switch makes all interior lights and gauges go on and off and sometimes not come back on for days (happens everytime the car is started up). makes speed limits impossible to tell, etc. *nm

Front driver side wheel bearing failure. i have had me wheel bearing replaced twice in the last year and it is going bad again so that will make it 3 times in 12 months. the first failure was under warranty and was replace free of charge. the second failure happened just after is was out of warranty and i had to pay to have it fixed even though it was replaced 5 months earlier. now is it bad again. i have never had so many problems with one car. the turn signals work sometimes, the car doesn't start all the time. *nm

Car is extremely hard to steer and makes a lot of noise at low speeds such mostly parking. repair shop advised rack and pinion problem the this model car is a common problem. *jb

Security light came on but went off after next start. next day key fobs not working. reprogrammed at dealer. afterwards car had been making beeping noise constantly while on and parked and inside lock switch not working. after driving over a certain speed beeping noise stops. called dealer was advised passlock issue on that model car. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle stalled intermittently for about seven months. there were no warning indicators before the vehicle stalled. additionally, when the vehicle stalled it will not restart without the computer being reprogrammed. every time the vehicle was towed to the dealer. the only thing the dealer did was reset the computer. after the vehicle was in the dealership 5 times for this problem the contact began resetting the computer. the dealer's service manager showed the contact how to reprogram the computer by turning the ignition on, allowing the security light to flash ten minutes, turn the ignition off, and restart the vehicle. the dealer identified the problem as a short in the ignition switch. the vehicle is currently at the dealer awaiting repair of the ignition. the dealer offered two options for repair, to replace the entire ignition system or jump the security system. if the security system was by passed it will no longer activate. there are two technical service bulletins (tsbs) concerning the ignition, tsbs 010849020 and 020604011. *ak updated 02/27/06. *jb

I purchased a 2001 pontiac grand am in february 2003. shortly after the 45k miles i started to have problems with the dex-cool anti-freeze leaking around the intake gasket, head gasket was damaged. also, there was extensive oil use, approximately a quart every 500 miles of driving. despite what this might sound like, this vehicle, while in my possession has been well maintained. i have had the above problems fixed on 11-20-05 and after the mechanic was done i had put another $1465.00 into a car that has been nothing but problems. now, one month after getting my car back the check engine light is on, and this is not the first time i have had to fix this problem either. i have heard from several mechanics and dealers that this is common problem with this car due to dex-cool only systems and aluminum engines that erode head- gaskets prematurely. *jb

Faulty intake gasket to engine from coolant. after less than 80,000 miles the intake gasket is leaking in the 2001 pontiac grand am. my understanding is that this problem is not restricted to an occasional vehicle and it presents an issue of losing fluid. not only is this a safety hazard for vehicle owners, it is an environmental hazard as well. *jb

When trying to start the car it will not start and the security light is lit. a reset procedure is required that takes over 10 minutes. this has happened many times and makes the vehicle useless for emergencies. the first time this happened they replaced the fuel pump and the fuel filter at quite some expense to me. *nm

Security light keeps coming on. car will become disabled and will not start until system is reset. took car in for repair on this problem once. a year later light started coming back on. ask service personnel about this situation and he said it could be a number of things causes this problem with the security system. *jb

The body control module caused two batteries to fail. the turn signal switch failed causing clicking noise in the ash. *ts when the bcm failed the consumer noticed a 1 amp draw. the dealer could not duplicate the problem but replaced the bcm per the consumers request. the vehicle was bucking and felt as if there was a major miss. this was due to faulty #4 injector. the injector was replaced and the pcm was reprogrammed. *nm

Faulty turning signals. although gm has had a recall on this item i don't think included all vin numbers in the recall. my car is suffering from the same problem but was refused recall service because my vin number was not included. i feel there maybe numerous cars out there that were excluded from this recall. i have a 2001 pontiac grand am gt sedan. *jb

Continuous rapid clicking noise from dash caused by short circuit in multi-function switch. according to mechanic this eventually will result in turn signal failure if not repaired, due to short circuit causing switch to burn out. this has been a recurring problem on this vehicle. had this problem repaired three times already (07/23/2003, 11/14/2004, 10/18/2005) . each repair replaced the multi-function switch with a new part and cost about $300 installed. suspect some kind of manufacturing defect is causing this safety issue. this problem is not related to the flasher unit recall, since this vehicle was already serviced for that recall, but this problem continues to occur. *jb

Dt: the turn signal was making a clicking sound even after the light was turned off. it seemed to be mostly when making a right turn. the problem was ongoing since april 2005. it continued to make the clicking sound anywhere from five to twenty minutes after making the turn. this was an on going problem. when the vehicle was taken to a dealership they said they would have to remove the dashboard to find the cause of the problem. the contact was still unsure of what the exact cause was. the contact has heard of an investigation for the 2002 models.*ak

Three big issues with this car: 1) the worst-i've had problems with the security system shorting three times. each time, the car turns over but will not start. the security light flashed twice, but did not come on the third time. the first time the dealer adjusted the system (whatever that means) which was covered under warranty. the second time (two months later), my car would not start at 2am outside of a bar, so i had to have it towed. this time the whole system was replaced under my warranty. the third time (four months later) my car would not start and had to be towed. the system was again replaced, this time it was covered under a parts& labor warranty so at least i didn't have to pay anything. 2) the brakes. i had the rotors replaced because of extreme vibrating when breaking, as well as a loud squealing noise that would start after the breaks heated up. the squealing noise did not go away so i had the breaks' hardware replaced. that worked for a while. six months later, the vibrating has come back and there is a loud grinding noise when the breaks get wet (i.e. rain). 3) coolant light comes on frequently. first, i simply replaced the coolant much more often than should be necessary. finally, i let my dealer convince me to pay the $700 to have it fixed (i'm not sure what the problem was) a year ago. the coolant light is now coming on again, so i'm just refilling it frequently. i've only had this car 18 months. i'm in love with the look and the pickup, but it is completely unreliable. when can i get it declared a lemon? at least i still have 10k miles left on the extended warranty i purchased with it. if i can't extended it again, i will sell this unreliable car. *nm

Several problems with 2001 grand am v6. when apply brakes at any speed over 35 km a pulsating can be felt. the pass lock system continuously goes off stopping me from starting my own car. had to replace spark plugs and wires 4 times within last year. as they corrode and cause starting problems (so says the mechanic)*jb

I own at 2001 pontiac grand am which has had a recall on exterior lighting - hazard flashing warning lights which causes my turn signals to operate intermittently. through my own investigation over 700,000 of these models have been recalled. when i went to the dealer to have it repaired, i was informed that my vin number didn't fall into the "range" that general motors was willing to replace for free. general motors told me to pay for the repair and send them the bill and they will "review it". it is very obvious that this is the same issue that other grand am owners are having - this part is defective and i want gm to replace it. this is a safety issue with my car, how can they not fix it??

Pass lock system a complete failure. the security light comes on and the car won't start. the owners manual says to wait 10 minutes then turn the key off and try again, but it keeps doing it. can we please have a recall?? please. *jb

Smelled gasoline immediately after cranking car and continously while driving car. gasoline smell became worse despite windows being rolled down, choking condition. took car into local shop and they said fuel regulator was pouring gasoline out.

Dt: consumer complained about hazard light switch problem. was told by the dealership that the model years 1999 -2001 had the same problem. the part number 226247990961e that was on this car, and was under recall. has a recall. the recall number was unavailable. the part was replaced in may 2005, and still had the same clicking noise from the hazard switch. also, complained about security system problem. when i trying to start put the key in ignition and the light flashed, car would not start. had to reset the system. turned the key to the accessory position for 15 minutes for the car to start. dealership wanted to charge $45.00 diagnose ,and to replace the part with the same kind of part that was already replaced it with once. this has been happening since first purchasing the car in june 30, 2004. this happened every time consumer drove the car. *ak

After starting the vehicle all electrical systems don't engage. including radio, heater, a/c, speedometer, all gauges, power locks, power windows, all interior lights and head lamps if in the auto day lamp status. it then randomly starts sometimes, and other times you can drive for 30+ and it never comes back. most of the time if you turn the vehicle off and back on 3-7 times then all works. this has been an ongoing problem coming up on a year now. i have submitted symptoms on web forums and the majority of the people blame it on faulty body control modules and claim that the grand am has a problem with them. i have yet to see a recall on it. *jb

My 2001 pontiac grand am has had brake failure since last year. i have had rotors & brakes replaced july of 2004. turned around my brakes was failing again and was told that i needed new calipers in november 2004. my car is not under any warranty. i could not afford to get the calipers replaced, so they sprayed them to get me through. i also had my brakes replaced again. started having brake problems again july 22,2005. this time i was sitting at a stop light and my brake pedal just released and went to the floor. i almost ran into the back of another car. took my car to get looked at. my rotors, brakes and calipers all need replacing immediately. was told that grand am vehicles are common for having these problems. *jb

First time my daughter was driving car she had a very hard time stopping the car as if the gas was stuck on. a friend looked at it stated that the throttle was stuck in the open position. garage had it 3 days. changed throttle did it again 1 day later called garage back has now been there 2 days.. still waiting

2001 pontiac grand am 6 cylinder with 31,000 miles. engine coolant light came on. added coolant, but light comes on 2 weeks later. find a small leak on right side of engine at the intake manifold gasget where coolant is seeping out of the engine. pontiac wants $800 to fix problem, pontiac mechanic tells me this is very common for this type engine. search around area and find someone to do it for $500. during repair i find out that coolant was leaking inside and outside the engine. coolant was in the oil. total repair bill is $550. this problem should have been dealt with by gm or pontiac. a recall should be initiated on this vehicle or compensation should be made to those who were stuck with a costly repair bill on a poorly designed and defective engine.

2001 pontic grand am se 4door automatic car wash companies will not premit this vehcile to enter into the car wash since the side mirror fall off- after be told of this defect mine is loose since this is a problem with this make and model of car shouldn't this problem be recalled?

Car will fail while accelerating, when accererating hard, the car will not accelerate, if i let off the gas and accelerate again the problem will dissapear, if i do not the car will continue to jolt and provide longer periods without acceleration

Car would hesitate when starting. then it finally didn't start. it was towed and after being towed it would start again. after this happening a couple of times it was taken to the dealership and it was decided it was the fuel pump. this car is not 5 years old yet!

My 2001 pontiac grand am also has had problems with the ignition switch cyclinder. i had it replace july 2003 and just yesterday 5/12/05. both times my car was not under warranty. i went to church on mothers day car was running fine. went home and was in the house for 15 minutes and went to leave and my car would not start up. i to went out and brought a new car battery and car still would not start. i have spent money to have my car towed to the dealer and paying for the same promblem within 2 years. i also had to have the fuel pump replaced in 2002 and i brought the car in 2001, that was within my first year of having the vehicle. i have read all the consumer complaints and i counted 20 complaints about the ignition. something really needs to be done about this.

I read on cnn on may 3 that the nhtsa has launched an investigation into antilock brake failures of gm pickup trucks and suv's in the "salt belt" states. i would like to advise that i live in ontario, canada, and own a 2001 pontiac grand-am. it currently has 138,000 km. i purchased this vehicle new from a gm dealership. i have experienced similar antilock brake issues, to those mentioned in cnn's news article. the first one occured around 60,000 km. since then, i have had to replace all of the antilock brake components three times over the life of the car. i anticpate having to do it again, as my antilock brakes have started to act up, activating on their own, for no apparent reason. i know of at least three other pontiac grand-am owners who have experienced similar issues. i have tried to take this up with the dealership and gm canada, but all attempts to rectify the issue were unsuccessful. after the vehicle was over its warranty period (60,000 km), gm basically advised that it was my tough luck for not purchasing the extended warranty. there was no effort put into identifying what the problem was or why it continues to occur. i will be anxious to hear the results of your investigation and would encourage you to extend your investigation into the pontiac grand-am vehicle line as well. thank you.

Contact states: after the signal light was fixed per the recall notice, a clicking sound was heard and smoke emitted from the arm. if the turn was not very wide, the signal stayed on. the dealer stated the problem is part of the recall and will not fix it.

Low coolant light came on after turning vehicle on in morning, checked coolant level it was low, added coolant, light came back on 2 weeks later, added more coolant. changed oil found white crud in oil, called dealership (village pontiac gmc) and service said it was manifold gasket and it is very common on this type of vehicle. made appointment to have this fixed, quoted at $800.00 to repair. if this is so common and a service center knows what the problem is without seeing vehicle, shouldn't this be a recall?

The lower intake manifold gasket of the consumer's 2001 pontiac grand am failed. *nm the gaskets were replaced along with the egr, coolant bypass, occ/oxygen catalyst converter and the pcm/power control module "p" drive seal. the consumer requested information about any accidents and or deaths associated with this failure. *sc *jb

I would like to let nhtsa know that i have several complaints with my 2001 pontiac grand am. i have had to do quite a bit of repairs on this vehicle, such the security system, the fuel pump. i am not facing repairs on the water pump because of leakage and the low coolant light coming on and off. also with my grand am and i have seem others with the side rear view mirrors. the mirrors just fall off and hand by the cord. this is extremely dangerous as we need these mirrors for side view vision. *ak

I have noticed a grinding sound coming from my brakes. i took the car to the shop and was told that i needed pads and rotors, i replaced pads and rotors and the abs, trac off, and the service vehicle soon light started coming on. took the car to the dealer for further analysis and they told me i needed a speed sensor because it was malfunctioning and because it is inside the wheel hub i also had to replace these things also. $700.00 later the lights were still coming on and the brakes was still making this strange noise. i returned the car and after inspection was told that the abs wires were busted and needed to be replaced, $200.00 later the car is still making these noises and the lights are still coming on. no one seems to know what the problem is. i am taking the car back again for further analysis. i have also had a problem with the manifold replaced it at $700.00, the ignition fortunately for me it was covered under the extended warranty i purchased with the car. i also have a problem with the turn signals malfunctioning. *nm

Defective intake gasket. see complain #'s 79007,10086421,10065717. low coolant light started coming on every week and a half or so, starting back in october of last year (2004). it came on every couple weeks so i just kept filling it with coolant and had my thermostat replaced. problem still kept happening. finally my car overheated on the way home from work on the interstate so i had to pull over. i put it in the shop on 3/7/05 and was just told that i needed my intake gasket replaced costing me $800.00. mechanic says this is ia common problem due to defective equipment. did some research and due to the number of complaints regarding this same problem, ponitac needs to be held responsible for this. *ak

I am having many electrical problems with my 2001 pontiac grand am: first,there was a recall for a faulty turn signal/hazard flasher relay which i had repaired at an authorized dealership,but now the flasher relay is displaying the same problems it did before it was replaced-causing me to wonder if pontiac is using faulty parts to replace faulty parts!!also ,this same car is having many electrical problems-including power windows that sometimes work and sometimes do not;after starting the engine and disengaging the emergecy hand brake,the lights are supposed to come on . sometimes the lights will take a long time before they will operate;also ,sometimes nothing will work ,other than the engine running.please note that this is the second pontiac 2001 grand am in which we have had electrical problems.on our first pontiac grand am-the tail lights would intermittently work; please note that this was a new car with around 20,000 miles on it.i can go into greater detail about the many other electrical and non-electrical problems i have had with this car,and i have seen other similar problems people have been having with this type of car.my concern is for the safety of the people driving these cars,as well as other motorists on the highways.(these electrical defects in these grand am's could cause a dangerous situation on the highway,if the running lights were to fail at night-or at high speeds).would someone at nhtsa please look into this problem? this is a definite safety concern which should be addressed! thank you for your time.*ak

The ignition switch system keeps locking the car up and will not let it start. this has happened numerous times and at a cost of between $500.00 and $700.00 each time. the dealer replaces switch and other componets each time. this started when the car reached 50,000 miles and was out of warranty. *jb

09/01/04 - low coolant warning light following cold engine starts. no visible coolant leaks, added 16 oz. coolant to fix problem. 11/01/04 - same problem, added 16 oz. coolant to fix problem. 12/23/04 - low coolant light always on while driving. 01/14/05 - intake gasket was found to be leaking coolant externally and internally. potential for damage to engine. potential for engine to overheat, which is dangerous to passengers in sub-zero temperatures during winter months. intake gasket was replaced at costly $650 repair bill. *jb

I am one of many people with this same problem. i own a 2001 pontiac grand am. at about 53,000 miles i noticed a coolant leak on my garage floor. upon further inspection i noticed that it was coming from the exhaust manifold gasket. i promptly called up my local dealer, jack walker pontiac in dayton, ohio. i made an appointment for january 4, 2005 to have my vehicle inspected for further diagnosis. when the phone call came in from the dealer with the estimation of $765, i was stunned, but knew it was a major issue that had to be attended to. so i ok'd the procedure. on friday, january 7, 2005 my car was finally ready for pickup. i went to pick it up, paid the $780 and got in the car. after i turned it on, it flashed "low coolant". i proceeded to walk back into the repair center, and told them what was going on. the man there talked to the mechanic, who said that it was just air in the coolant line; it could be cleared in about 10-20 minutes. one hour later they finally released the car to me. i think it is ridiculous that gm is not forced to recall this manifold head gasket since it is such a prominent issue in most gm v6-style engines. thank you for your time.*ak

Turn signals and hazard lights do not work. it started when the weather was getting colder. they eventually may start working. i found if i would wiggle the hazard switch the turn signals would work. i bought and replaced the hazard switch 22624799 and it resolved the problem. this is a recall but it does not include my vin. *ak

I bought a brand new gt and since i've had it the brakes made a slight grinding noise in the front, i just figured the car was new and 4 wheel disc brakes just make that noise. i drive a lot of highway mile so of course after the warranty expired the noise got worse. after 38000 miles i took it to my mechanic he replaced the front pads and resurfaced a rotor but could not figure out what the noise was, he thought it was a bushing or a boot worn out. he greased it and the noise dissapeared for about a weak . then i took in with 56000 mile and it needed pad, a caliper and he resurfaced the other rotor.again, after a weak the noise came back. now, with 64000 the noise is worse than ever , a constant grinding, scraping sound. i going take it to the mechanic again. for all the highway i drive i shouldn't be going through brakes like this.*ak

Started seeing coolant leaking from under hood. went to daler and they pressure tested and found nothing. a day later started leaking even more. dealer then said head gasket faulty and he also said he has seen several times before at about the 60k mile mark. they replaced the gasket at a cost of over $800.00. every shop i contacted said they know of the problem. shouldn't this be replaced at pontiac's expense. *ak

Failure of turn signals on 2001 pontiac grand am. turn signals frequently will not operate for extended periods of driving. this failure of the turn signal system greatly increases the danger of driving on freeways and in general. turn signals may not operate in either direction for hours, then happen to work properly for a while, before returning to non-functioning. took car for repair, but signals worked that day. no incidents or injuries, just more danger when non-functioning on a car that is relatively new. thanks. *ak

Gas pedal had always had a bit of a "hitch" to it. while driving on a major highway the gas pedal became stuck in the "on" position. we were lucky enough to be able to get off of the road and into a parking lot where we turned the engine off. car had to be towed to a repair shop - undriveable. consequences: we were stranded for 2 hours in a remote area waiting for a tow truck and without the car for over a week - the time it took to get a replacement part. according to the repairman, the nylon bushing on the gas pedal mechanism was broken. they had to replace the gas pedal assembly. the old part is not available. it was a frightening experience. worst is that just 2 weeks before that my wife had driven the car to florida alone - over 1000 miles from old home in new york - most of the trip on the infamous i 95. she could have been killed had this happened on that road. *jb

Recall 03v327000 concerning hazard warning switch: after recall repairs were done vehicle experienced a clicking sound in the steering wheel. dealer was notified, and informed the consumer that this problem was not covered under the recall, but another issue not pertaining to the recall. *ak

I turn car off & now two times car would not start with theft security light on. clearing trouble codes seems to work. this needs to be addressed by gm because this is dangerous and ridiculous that it has no known fix or been addressed by any agency. peoeple should not have to deal with this when gm knows there is a problem. i would think that a recall would happen but i guess no died yet so it is no big deal. the bottom line is gm is selling faulty vehicles with the knowledge of the problem hence misrepresenting that these are new fully functional vehicles when in fact if they don't start they are not functioning. we as consumers are not protected at any level for the most part in this country as long as big business pads the pockets of the government.*ak

Intake manifold gasket failure/signal failure/ window regualtor failure/rotors. *ak

Vehicle was having a problem with the ignition switch. when the they key will not turn when applied to the ignition switch. consumer took the vehicle to dealer for service. however, warranty expired. *ak

First the speed sensor malfunctioned. then, the speed sensor hub malfunctioned within one year time limit. these sensors had an effect on the anti lock braking system which did not work when sensors failed. cruise control will not work because it made the brake light come on. took vehicle in to see what was wrong. dealer did not solve the problem. *ak

Headlights in 2001 pontiac grandam gt are inefficient, cannot see road early morning and later nights. need to reduce speed out of normal -> i as a driver feel very unsafe when driving my grandam at night or with low visibility because headlights don't help me see.*ak

Consumer experienced a problem with driver's side window, not being able to go up and down. this was going on for 1 year. she took vehicle to dealer, and was told that it would cost her $400.00 to get it repaired. also, consumer was having a problem with flashers not working. she did not have them repaired. *ak *tc

Air conditioning system has a build up of condensation causing mold to grow and a foul smell. air conditioning switch does not work on settings 1 and 2, only 3 and above. *jb

The left rear brakes are locking. the pads and rotors are ground down to the point of needing replacement. the pads and rotors were replaced and components cleaned. the problem is still occuring. the abs, antilock, and service vehicle soon lights will come on after start up. they will stay on until the engine is shut off and restarted. the vehicle will not start. the starter will crank, but the engine won't start. first visit to dealer: fuel pump was replaced. second visit to dealer: oil pressure sensor was replaced, third visit to dealer: vehicle theft deterrent codes appeared in computer. dealer does not know how to fix yet and problem still persists. the problem is intermittent. occasionally the care will be hard to start requiring taping the accelerator to start it. if it does not start then, it will not start no matter how long it sits (recommended by mechanic. *ak

Friday morning i was on empty, so i went to the gas station. turned off car & filled up, started it no problem. then went to get breakfast, turned off car. the came back after no more then 5 minutes the car would not start. no sputtering, no failure to fire, no stalling before this occasion. nothing. i have had the car for about 1.5 years. i have had no problem with it starting. i took it to auto repair shop & they said it was common problem. that they have had a lot of 2001 grand am with this exact problem. it was fixed. i was told to watch the car because if it happens again they will report the problem. when we first go the car the front head lights would go off by themselves at night. that happened at 12:30am. also the taillights went out at the same time. we reported that to the dealership & they fixed it. *ak

On heavy rainy days windshield leaked water onto inside of vehicle. dealership replaced trims three times. however, the windshield problem was not resolved. *ak

My 2001 ponitac grand am se1 was involved in an accident where i was making a left turn as was a vehicle approaching in the opposite direction. i entered the intersection at less than 10 mph and the vehicle from the other direction visually estimated to be travelling at 35 mph moved from the dedicated turn lane out into the intersection where we collided. the front end of the 1989 cadillac el dorado struck the rear passenger side door and rear wheel. as a result spun the rear end of my vehicle approx. 90 degrees, pivoting off of the front wheels. the airbags deployed upon impact. the driver of the cadillac applied his brakes and left approx 16 feet of skid marks prior to impact. given this information and the low speeds of both vehicles the airbags should not have deployed.*ak

Signal lights quit working the only way to get them to work is put on emergency flashers then turn them off. the traction gets stuck in the off position and will not go off until car is turned off. have not replaced anything, mechanic said it is manufacturing problem with electrical system. *ak

When consumer turned on the air conditioner vehicle stalled while driving at any speed. vehicle was towed to dealership three times, but dealer could not reproduce or correct the problem. *ak

I picked up my brand new 2001 grand am with 1 mile on it, it was during a heavy down pour. the next morning i noticed both front and back floor boars were drenched. i've have the vehicle in on numerous occations for this problem and it is always after a heavy rain. they first stated the deflectors were broke/turned/etc. they had it in there for days under a hose, however, i told them it has to be heavy rain. they cannot duplication the problem and are now claiming some one is playing a joke on me. ha to that i say as i have an alarm on my car and no one else has the keys, besides who would be out in a thunder storm pouring water on the floor of my car. they have also stated it is due to a spill, well no one sits in my back seat. they had to repaint the seat runners as they were rusting out so bad due to the water leak. i'm obtaining a lawyer and taking legal actions. in looking at teh numberous complaints i can see i'm not the only one with this problem. i pay $395 per month for this car for the bottoms to rust out in the future. gm needs to make this right or they have lost a very loyal customer

The turn signal flasher failed and as a result the vehicle was rear ended while attempting to make a left turn. *ak *nm

This is a submission to note yet another general motors v6 issue with failing intake manifold gaskets. my particular gasket has a leak that is getting progressively worse, requiring me to fill coolant. at this time, the leak is external only and has not leaked into the engine compartments containing oil. my car is a 2001 grand am gt. my wifes car (2000 alero with the v6 also) had this same problem and pushed us to get rid of it. i only posted this after knowing of all the other people out there that have had this expensive problem. i only wish that everyone could submit the issue on here, allowing the nhtsa to have a better idea as to the scope of this poorly designed (and later fixed) engine gasket.*ak

Brakes and rotors need replacement at 27000 miles. brakes were squeaking at approx. 15000 miles. apparently there is many concerns among pontiac owners that the grand am has faulty brakes/rotors.*ak

Intermittently consumer was unable to turn the key in the ignition switch. dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. *ak

While placing child inside the vehicle in the rear consumer noticed that rear seat belts were inserted backwards from the manufacturer in order to click them in. consumer had to twist them up side down in order to click them into hold, and retract. consumer drove the vehicle to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic indicated that this vehicle was not on recall, and the warranty expired. *ak

My 2001 pontiac grand am gt was wrecked. it hit a tree dead center going about 40 mph buckled the hood and smashed the radiator back into the motor yet the air bags never went off? *la

2001 pontiac grand am has 52,000 miles and has recently been difficult to start. i may have to try 5-6 times before engine will turn over. yesterday the car died while going on an exit ramp off of the interstate. all lights were still functioning, but the car was dead and did not restart. i added 1 gal of gas to make sure it has enough although guage did not indicate low gas. i had the car towed to the dealership where it finally started. the dealer did a thorough check diagnostically and driving and could not find any problem. first time car has died while driving but has had several (10) instances of not starting in the past 2 months. this is a very big concern since my 20 year old daughter depends on this car for long drives frequently while in college. this could be a very big safety concern if car continues to die while driving! *ak

While driving vehicle shut down. consumer tried to restart vehicle but it failed to do so. consumer took vehicle back to the dealer, who made a few adjustments. however, the problem recurred. *ak

Turn signal/ hazard warning lights worked intermittently. consumer contacted the dealer, who stated that there was a recall for this problem. however, this vehicle was not involve din recall due to vin. *ak

Turn signal failure (recall by manufacture corrected that problem). however, dealer would not fix the continuos problem with the on-going ticking sound of the turn signal even when signal is not in use. that would cost $273 to fix, dealer said. grinding sound in tires (dealer gave documentation to support the fact that the 2001 pontiac grand am's were manufactured with a faulty tires and rim package. suggested new rims or different than manufacture choice tires. the most significant problem is with the engine. randomly upon ignition and sometimes after sitting idle, the engine will rev high (at times upto 3rpms). sounds like the engine is going to explode! went to 2 pontiac dealers various times (at least 6) and neither can fix the problem. each time i was charged with assessment fees. i'm done with pontiac vehicles!*ak

On my 2001 grand am gt1 i have replaced the intake gasket twice now. the 1st time it was in the shop for fuel gauge misreading. i never even got the "low coolant" light. that was at 51,000 miles around april 2002. the 2nd time was on 6-22-04; on 6-21-04 "low coolant light came on. added about 1 qt mixture of dex-cool and water. light did not come back on, but when i got to work on 6-22-04 i got out of car and noticed a line of orange fluid coming from car. i took it to the garage and 844.00 dollars later it was fixed again. i work 50 miles from my home and have to go through a bad neighborhood to get to work. i had to find a ride home, but was not able to find a ride to work the next day so i missed work. gm is a big company that no longer cares about their customer. they need to step up and accept liability for their error. there is a service bulletin but that does not cover the cost because it is less likely an accident will happen so the chances of them being suied is low.

Consumer placed key in the ignition switch and vehicle failed to start. a theft device light appeared on the dashboard and remained on. consumer had the vehicle towed to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic replaced key cylinder lock due to a security code. *ak

Turn signals worked intermittently but flasher indicator did not working correctly. a recall was issued for this problem. however, the service technicians claimed they will not do the necessary repairs. *ak

Vehicle is having electrical problems. turn signals were defective, the gas gauge will indicate that vehicle has more gas than what was really in the vehicle. the power steering trac off light came on. also, vehicle shut down completely and had to be towed. *la

2001 pontiac grand am has had problems with window motor, turn signals, air conditioner, the brake system, the security system and vehicle would not start. *mr there was strange noise when the brakes were applied and when making a left turn. the other problems with the window motor, turn signals, air conditioner were resolved per warranty, but the brake system problems continued. there were two instances with the factory security system. the vehicle would not start. the vehicle would just crank but not catch. the security light started to flash. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where they reset the system. a few months later, the security system locked the vehicle. the consumer found that the key sensor in the ignition shorted and the pass lock module was replaced and re-keyed. *sc *jb

While driving 20 mph consumer's vehicle was involved in a head on collision. upo n impact,dual air bags did not deploy. as a result, driver went through the windshield. *ak

The seat belt release disconnected several times. dealership replaced the part repeatedly. consumer was unsure if this was a design flaw. *ak

Tail lights stopped working even after the bulbs were replaced.*ak

After a heavy rain downpour rear window leaked from the top. *ak

While driving consumer attempted to accelerate in order to pass another vehicle and accelerator pedal stuck in position. in order to stop consumer had to shut the vehicle off and coast off the highway.*ak

Consumer complained about a brake problem. consumer replaced brakes every 4500 miles. brake calipers were not allowing the pads to wear evenly, thus destroying the rotors. *ak

While driving, a loud scrap noise was heard coming from the front. the consumer was able to drive the vehicle to the dealer for an inspection. the mechanic informed the consumer that the noise could not be duplicated, but the brakes and rotors needed replacing. the mechanic replaced the brakes and rotors, but the problem still continued. the problem has not been resolved. please fill in additional information. *jb the noise only happened at speeds of 30 mph. the dealer stated the tires were the problem

Window failed and cost $ 1000 to repair. *ak

I have had several problems with my vechicle not starting and the dealer has told me several different reasons. back in may 2003 is suppose to have been the computer codes were inproperly put into my car but now in march 2004 it is my ignition switch which a friend of mine has had the same problem but it was a recall on her car year. *jb

The solenoid chip, located behind the steering column, failed and caused the entire vehicle to lock up. this failure occurred when the vehicle was restarted after it had been driven and parked. the parts the dealership replaced are 12458191 and 670487. dealership indicated that this is a common failure with these vehicles. *ak the two failures occured with 20000 miles of one another. *nm

Consumer received a recall notice for replacement of hazard warning flasher switch. consumer spoke with service manager vicky weston about incomplete recall repair on the switch. *ak

Our 2001 pontiac grand am gt1 has coolant leaks. 3/15/04 we called pontiac to request assistance. they opened a file & said they'd investigate to determine if the problems were a manufacturer defect & if so provide repair assistance, to take it to a dealership for evaluation & call back with diagnosis, which we did 3/19/04 (cost $47). the dealership said the intake manifold gasket needed replacing [see gm service bulletin #03-06-01-010] & would cost $700+. after approx a month of waiting, on 4/14/04 pontiac denied our request stating we were past warranty & there was no recall. (we knew that & so did they from the start! otherwise, we would have just had it fixed!) no one read the service bulletin & pontiac refuses to admit liability for a faulty intake manifold gasket, despite the service bulletin which reads: "correction: install a new design intake manifold gasket. the material used in the gasket has been changed in order to improve the sealing qualities of the gasket. when replacing the gasket, the intake manifold bolts must also be cleaned, coated with threadlocker and torqued to a revised specification." not a manufacturer's defect? in denying our request pontiac is hiding behind the fact that they have unethically not issued a recall on their admitted defect. they have identified a design defect but disguised it in a service bulletin, then used the words "new design", "changed in order to improve" and "revised specification", which admits faulty equipment & procedures & should warrant a recall or at least assistance to the customer!! please look into this matter on our behalf. we appreciate any assistance you can offer us.*ak

Engine coolant leak at intake manfold, relating to tsb 03-06-01-010a apr 03. isue appears to be common among this make and model of car. car is a 2001 pontiac grand am with 45k miles. this type of leak is not typical for a car of this age and usage. local and dealer mechninics indicate that this is a common problem that could be easily solved with proper installation of the gasket. *ak

After the dealership replaced the hazard warning switch for the hazard warning light recall 03v327000 the turn signal stopped working correctly. *nm

It was hard for the consumer to start the vehicle, but once started the air bag/security light illuminated. the light stayed on the remainder of the time the vehicle was being operated. dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. *ak

My 2001 pontiac grand am experienced problems with the turn signal making "clicking" sounds after turning the turn signal off as well as just "clicking" without having used the turn signal. at times there was a constant clicking sound. i took the vehicle in a second time to the dealership to have the multi function turn signal switch replaced after it had been diagnosed. the first time i took it in (for the same problem) was to have the hazard switch replaced per recall notice # p03043-s of march 2004. replacing the hazarrd switch did not remedy the situation so my vehicle was taken back in to be diagnosed. diagnosis was "tech found multi function turn signal switch intermittent contact."

I just paid to have my wires for my hazard switch fixed, then i get the recall in for the switch to be replaced. gm wouldn't just give me a reimberment for the wires i had to replace. *ak

There is a hesitation when driving on highways when you accelerate into a higher gear. it has been checked out countless times and nothing is picked up on the computer.*ak

The heater/defroster fan motor no longer works on the first two fan speeds. in order to get the defroster or heater to function, you must use the third speed. the noise from the air flow at this speed is both annoying and distracting.*ak

When attempting to start vehicle the engie failed. consumer looked under the hood, and noticed some wires melted, followed by the engine burning. consumer put the fire out. *ak

My 2001 pontiac grand am continues to shut down with the anti-theft system being activated. have rpl fuel pump and had it towed 2 times to dealership to have computer reset in last 2 months. i have been told there is no way to deactivate the program. now have an unreliable car. don't know when it won't start and need a tow again! *ak

After making an appointment and leaving the vehicle at the dealership to have the hazard warning switch recall 03v327000 repairs performed, dealership didn't have the replacement switch. also when the vehicle was picked up the clock, radio, display lights and the headlights were inoperative. the dealership did not accept responsibility. *ak

The steering wheel was hard to turn. it felt like it did not have any power steering fluid. the dealership was unable to locate the cause of the problem because the power steering fluid was full and there was no cuts or breaks in the fluid line. also at 82,000 miles the vehicle failed to start. the vehicle was towed to the dealership. the dealership indicated this occurred because of a malfunction in the fuel pump system. please provide additional information. *jb

Nhtsa recall 03v327000 subject:hazard warning switch. the turn signals became inoperative. consumer received the recall notice took the vehicle to the dealer, who performed recall repairs. after driving the vehicle for less than ten minutes the turn signals failed. consumer immediately took the vehicle back to the dealer and the signals came on. dealer indicated it was an intermittent problem which could not be resolved. *ak.

While driving at any speed, intermittently when the signal light was used and then discontinued, the turn signal continued to operate. the signal light was not actually working but the clicking sound continued well after the signal was canceled. *nm *sc *jb

Ignition key switch failed not allowing vehicle to start. car was towed to dealer. ignition switch was replaced and cost was split between dealer and owner since warranty mileage was exceeded. dealer was very helpful, courteous and communicated the trouble to my complete understanding. car was repaired in 1 day. *ak

I have a pontiac grand am gt 2001 v6 and it has 3 major problems. the car has 52,000 miles and i have had to replace the rotors/breaks twice already. whenever the front brakes are applied they pulsate and drag the car to a stop. best of all its starting to shudder again when i use the breaks. so, soon to be 3 times in about 3 years. second, the speakers have blown 2 times. i dont understand why gm would put speakers in the car that cannot handle the power from the factory reciever. finally, the engine cooling problem. the low coolant light would turn on when i started the car, then turn off after 10-30 seconds. this went on for a week or two and i brought it in to get checked out. they told me the dex cool coolant ate through the gaskets, which caused the loss of coolant. its $800 to get it fixed. please do something, this car's design is flawed.*ak

I had to have the rotors resurfaced 3 times already, and the symptoms i am currently having indicate that i have to have them done for a 4th time. this car is only 3 years old, but the rotor problem has been a constant issue.*ak

My car is a 2001 pontiac grand am. it had 23,051 miles on it when the problem was fixed. the problem was the low coolent light went on so the intake gaskets and nec parts needed replacing. a 3 year old car with 23,000 miles needed $900 worth of repairs with no accidents on it's record. *ak

While under warrenty, rear struts were replaced. 6 months later, suspension noise was heard again, however now from the front end. at approximately 41,000 miles (nov 2003) pontiac dealer stated that the noise was "normal" for this car and the struts however there was no safety issue or mechanical damage. seems to me that if there was no mechanical damage to the strut, then the frontend suspension should not sound like a baby's rattle. now with approximately 45,000 the noise is worse and the steering column has occassional "jitters" under moderate to hard braking conditions. vechicle seems to be developing several problems less then 6 months after warrenty expired.*ak

2001 pontiac grand am gt, 44500 miles, 38 months old. vehicle has slowly used radiator fluid for over a year, however passed all pressure tests at dealer. engine began to make loud noises when started but quickly disappears as engine warms. engine noise became very loud within a few days and dealer states the intake manifold gasket has a leak which has also cuased damage to values and lifters. repair cost at $1,600.00 plus an additional $300.00 to flush engine and radiator. systemn flush required since radiator fluid may have entered engine. only engine problem prior to engine noise was the occassional loss of anti-freeze which did not lead dealer to problem. engine oil is always clean with no signs of external contaminants. dealer has stated that a lot of intake manifold gaskets are being replaced. *ak

My 2001 pontiac grand am has had problems with brakes/abs and wheel hubs. with 47k miles on the car, i've had problems with abs/trac off/svc vehicle lights, brakes needing to be replaced & rotors turned, and have had to replace both front wheel hubs(at $391 per hub, just for the parts) and a wheel bearing. *jb

Water leaked into floorboard from air-conditioner. grinding noise coming from the front and back wheels. trim came loose from back bumper. rearview mirror fell off. had numerous times where the car would crank but not start (dealership could not duplicate problem) front driver window would not come down on occasion. car caught fire under the dashboard while parked in our garage. the fire did extensive damage to the interior of the car. the inspector sent out to look at the car (by gm) said the fire was electrical and not caused by anything we did to the car. the car was repurchased by gm on january 7, 2004 after basically calling them on a daily basis to get something done about it. *la

I have a 2001 pontiac grand am. i recently became aware of a recall for this vehicle model and year having to do with hazard warning switches that are defective, causing turn signals/hazard lamps to become intermittent or inoperative (recall #03v327000, gm recall #03043). i had this intermittent turn signal problem with my vehicle, so i contacted gm and was informed that my vin number [xxx] is not part of the recall. i took the vehicle to my local pontiac dealer on 12-31-03 for a diagnostic and repair. they replaced the hazard switch. the summary on their invoice says: '44337 bad switch replace hasard switch 770.5'. this seems to me to be the problem described in the recall, but since this vehicle vin number is not in the recall, i had to pay the cost of parts and labor to fix this problem ($89.16). i am submitting this information to you because of the safety issues involved and because it appears to be related to the recall mentioned above. thank you.*ak *js information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

Car has a very slow and hard start most of the time, and cranking noise when trying to start. it has been in the shop multiple times since it has been bought and nobody can seem to figure the problem out.*ak

I own a 2001 pontiac grand am gt. i bought it 1 year used from someone who took very good care of it and had all the service work receipts. there was a very noticeable constant grinding noise coming from the front tires, especially at lower speeds around 35 mph and under. i took it to 2 different dealerships with no help. the first one didn't know what it was, and the second said it was the tires (goodyear eagle). the tire didn't fit the rim perfectly and was rubbing on the rim. they only had 22,000 miles on them and it was still under warranty. they said pontiac put 2 different style tires on the grand am and would only replace one type, even though both styles made this noise. i bit the bullet and bought 4 new tires - cooper, not goodyear. it took care of the problem, but i am still very upset that the dealer would not replace the tires even though they knew that was the problem. *la

Driver's side wheel made a whopping sound at any speed. while driving over 65 mph there was vibration throughout the vehicle. vehicle was taken to dealer five times for this problem, but dealer could not resolve the problem. *ak

When shifting gears the vehicle vibrated and would not move. the vehicle was towed to the dealer for analysis. the mechanic noticed the shaft inside of transmission broke off and needed to be replaced.*ak in addition, the turn signals failed intermittently. the vehicle was taken to the dealer but they could not duplicate the problem. *ph *nm

2 weeks after purchase, floorboard was drenched and took to the dealership to be repaired.they said it was;however, the next big rain the car was drenched again. the car stayed for almost 2 weeks during which time, the mechanics could not "figure it out" and i was informed that some "experimental" fluid was used to try to stop the leak, but that did not work so it was being removed. the mechanics were putting it under the water hose to see if they could determine the leak. this was finally fixed, though i do not know what the cause may have been or what the final fix was done. 6 months later, the blinkers went out and were haphazard working. this was repaired under a different pontiac dealership as i was leery to "experiments." 3 months later, the check engine light was on or the check vehicle light, headlights were acting funny. dealership and was informed this was due to corrosion and was not covered under warranty. last week, the traction off light kept coming on, the headlights kept blowing bulbs, the service vehicle light was on, the cigarette lighter would not work, and the daylights and fog lights would not work at all. i was informed that the map sensor was covered under warranty, but the headlight control circuit control module was not covered. i was informed by dealer#2 that the faulty parts could have been caused by the prior water leakage. both the warranty company and dealer #2 told me that even though headlights and a lighting system was pertinent, there was nothing they could do to fix it at no cost to me. dealer #2 fixed the map sensor and i picked up the vehicle. now other problems after map repai. since the car was waterlogged and it is only logical that any water damage should be covered by someone. i called dealer#1 and explained the situation. at this time, when they pulled up the record of the car, i was informed the water leakage was on a service bulletin i did not go put my car in the lake and i did not ask for this kind of hassle.*ak

My ignition sevceral times has failed me by the pass lock feature secruity light on i have to wait 10 minutes for the stupid thing to reset and half the time is does not reset i have went out and purchased a new battery being told that would solve the problem it did not all ti did was save me from having a dead battery while waiting the 10 minutes for the security light to go off, i finally got a reading on the codes and the one is 1632 and 1731 well what is it and why do i have to pay for a repair on a 3 year old car that gm states in there warranty book they stand behind the product that they make and when out of warranty as is my car they will cover half if not all well i have the codes and the dealer still wants to charge me for a diagnoses, the car is 2 1/2 - 3 years old and my milage is 65,000 i have never had so many problems with a car as i am having with this pontiac grand am se. i have always bought chrysler products and one time i decide to try a pontiac is has been a costly nightmare i have also had problems with my breaking system the car had 7,000 miles on it and the dealer replaced the breaks rotars and calipers at which time i am now repaceing the breaks every 4-6 months and about every other break changing i am replacing the rotars calipers the entire breaking system for the most part which i just did again at a tune of 700.00 + dollars in one month i have put 1400.00 in to the car between repairs and rental car cost, please someone do something about this product they are not as safe as they seem and gm should stand behind there defective car

Speakers have been replaced twice, calipers, electrical problems and only 3 months after i purchased the vehicle until now i have heard a grinding, scrubbing noise in the wheels when driving at slow speeds. and when slowing down the car shudders violently. i have only had the car a year and every month something has had to be fixed. the car is still under warranty and i am very displeased with the service that i have gotten from the dealership. i am now consulting a lawyer who handles lemon law cases. *jb

Rubbing noise when at low speeds and stopping appears to be coming from front end. took to dealership they stated there was a recall on the tires and could only replace 2 of the tires. problem will return when tires rotated per manufacturers specifications. requesting all tires be replaced. *ak

The turn signals would work intermittantly. dealer said the signals should work again if the hazzard switch is engaged and then disengaged. this did help solve the problem when it would arise. took the car in for service and they replaced the hazzard switch. this did fix the problem. another service shop said this has been a common problem for this part due to a bad solder joint in the switch and they have changed out quite a few switches. looked online to see if there had been a recall on this part in my car type. there is but my car is not listed as one where this fix is aurthorized.

Accelerator sticks while driving, especially in hot weather. the only way to brake is to manually pull up accelerator with your foot. dealer says it is the throttle body needing to be cleaned. it has been cleaned several times and things never clear up the problem. *jb

While driving, the computer malfunctioned. the vehicle failed to start 4 times in the past 8 months and needed to be towed each time. filed a complaint (odi id 10004570) for the first time. then after two trips to the store, and after attempting to restart the vehicle after 10 to 20 mins. now parts of the computer was replaced; 2 fuel pumps, battery (dealer?s solution, even though battery was fine) flashed the body control module, replaced spark plug harness and several other parts. in an effort to find problem, the ingnition mechanism was replaced for the 4th time. still uncertain if the problem was fixed, it?s suspected that the ignition switch may have been the defect all along. *la

At 23,000 miles had problem with my brakes pulsating, i took it to the dealer, they had to replace the brakes and rotors. at 41,000 miles had problems with the brakes pulsated again, it usually happens at speeds above 45, which makes it had to keep control over the vehicle, the dealer said my brake pads were fine, but i should have the rotors resurface when i get my brake pads replaced. at 43,000 miles had problems with the front end ( on the drivers side) and steering. the front ends was making alot of noise when i went over bumps like samething was broken, and it was going to fall apart . the steering, when going over 45 miles per hour with a 25 degree right turn would jerk, but if i had the ets off, the steering would be come very loose, making it seems like i had no steering at all. the dealer fixed the problem with the front end, which they tighten and lube, but did not find any problem with the steering. *ak

On 2 separate days/occasions turn signals failed to operate in either direction. after parking car i used 4 way flashers to verify that all bulbs were ok and blinking. turn signals then operated properly immediately after. appears to be intermittent problem, have not yet taken car to dealer for warranty work. *nlm

I am an owner of a 2001 pontiac grand am se 4dr. 2.4 4 cylinder vehicle. consumer is concerned about a braking problem that has occurred recently. whenever the front brakes are applied they pulsate and drag the car to a stop. i have been informed that gm has had multiple problems with other consumers complaint regarding this same issue. it must be so pervasive that gm has issued a service bulletin to its mechanics. see. gm bulletin no. 00-05-23-002b. i have been wondering why there hasn't been a recall over this safety issue. not only does it affect the pontiac grand am but it also affects the chevy malibu 97-03, olds cutlass 97-99 and olds alero 99-03. if you investigate your own web site there are more and more complaints posted. something needs to be done before an accident does occur. incidentally, i am also having a problem with my turn signal/hazard lights intermintently working. this problem has been pinpointed at the hazard light switch which i haven't replaced just yet. i understand that there is an open investigation going on over this issue.*ak

Bought car brand new. returned car to dealer twice for grinding noise in front brakes. each time they told me they could not find any problems. last time it was in, dec. 02 at approx. 18,000 mi. they told me my tires were low on air???? now it has 25,148 mi. took car in for third time with grinding brakes, this time they tell me i need front pads and rotors that are not covered under warranty at a cost of $350.00. the service manager also told me that these cars are know for unusually brake wear. i asked for assistance on the repairs since i had the car in previously for brake grinding noise and they could not find anything. also asked them why, in dec. 02, they didn't tell me that my brake pads should be replaced soon as they must of been worn down pretty good at that time. their reply was that my brakes apparantly were ok at that time.....bull!! you cann't tell me that at 18,000 miles the brakes look that good where you don't say anything to the customer but 7,000 miles later you need to replaced the brake pads and rotors. also, they offered me 10% off the total bill as their assistance to me. itold them to keep their 10 %. i pulled car out of they shop and had a local repair shop that i trust perform the identical same work for $200.00. i have all failed parts if anyone wants to inspect them, just notify me. after reviewing your service bulletins, various other customer complaints and several other articles, i really believe that pontiac has a front end brake problem that they do not want to admit to and i think that someone should look into this problem before the problem turns deadly. *ak

I have had both of my front wheel bearings go bad on my 2001 pontiac grand am, within 50,000 miles. i can't seem to make gm or my attorney general understand that sealed wheel bearings are not a routine maintenance item. they tell me there is no recall and since my warranty is over they will not address this situation. i'm told there is no recall on these parts. one would think that this could be a coincidence, but i find out that the small parts store i use in northern michigan, has this bearing in stock. i'm told that this bearing also fits the alero, and malibu. my mechanic states that they are alway changing these. so i'm not sure what is going on, but i would like someone to verify that a sealed wheel bearing is not a routine maintainance item.*ak

My car shakes violently when braking. i have had the brakes replaced 4 times since buying it and haven't felt safe driving it since about the third day after i bought it. i am not driving it wrong, as the mechanics say. there is no reason you should hve to have the brakes done 4 times before 60,000 miles (rotors twice, once i wouldn't let them since it had just been done and was out of warranty). i wonder how long you will let this continue before someone gets killed. i will be watching for that complaint.

I have had many problems with my 2001 grand am. like others many turn signals failed, i have had water leaks, the dome light fell out of its casing and was dangling by its wires. in may of 2003 the computer and its wiring were replaced (at only 31000) after an incident of very ruff shifting. a separate consistant problem that remains unsolved is the car's occasional episodes of not wanting to start. during these episodes it sounds as if the starter will crack, but it just will not start. the only way to get it started at these times is to tap the gas pedal! it has been taken to two dealerships for this problem. they have replaced a fuel intake valve and put new programming in the computer. nothing they ever do solves this problem and usually they tell me that they can not recreate the problem and therefore can not fix it. even after having a new computer the problem still occurs.*ak

I have a 2001 pontiac grand am. i purchased my vehicle in december of 2000 or january of 2001. nevertheless, i have 26k miles on my car and i have brought it in twice for major engine repair. the first time i brought it in was approximately 8-9 months ago when my engine was knocking loudly and grinding during acceleration. in addition it would not accelerate or kick into overdrive it just grinded. i brought my car into gay pontiac in dickinson tx where it was purchased. they were not authorized by gmc to replace my engine but to replace certain portions of my engine i.e. rods and main bearing. last friday on april 25th my engine began to do the exact same thing as i was driving home. i began to accelerate and the car started grinding every time the rpm meter reached 2200 rpm. i tend to accelerate fast when i drive however i do not consider this grounds for the damage that appears to be happening to my vehicle. i have not added any components to my vehicle since purchasing it. i took my vehicle back to the same dealership, and this time they called out a gmc rep who suggested again that only certain parts of my engine are replaced. i am in the process of trying to get this changed. i believe at this point parts that were not originally repaired or replaced have since sustained additional damage and i believe that there is a problem outside of my engine that is calling for the engine to sustain this damage. i am very concerned that my vehicle is a lemon and the failure of gmc to investigate and repair my vehicle will eventually cause me additional harm. i would hate to be in rush hour traffic and have an engine failure or be unable to accelerate to the flow of traffic.

Leaking steering rack, leaking water pump & broken blower motor.

2001 pontiac grand am has problems cranking. ignition turns over but engine will not crank until 3-4 tries. does not do it on a consistent basis and dealership has not been able to duplicate problem. it has been in 4 times for this problem and 4 times because the back doors will not open some times without bumping the doors with your hip. dealership was not able to duplicate problem. also, rearview mirror fell off, side mirrors had to be replaced because clear coat was left off, door reflector fell off, weather strip on window fell off, blinkers stopped working. despite the fact that this car is well taken care of, it is coming apart at the seams. pontiac rep has been contacted answer is the same, we have to duplicate problem. it has now began stalling out after you get it cranked. i am now contacting gm/bbb as a last resort. please help me if you can. *jb

I own a 2001 pontiac grand am,4-cyl. 5-speed manual transmission, which i purchased in may of 2001. since then i have been having problems with engaging 2nd gear, the transmission slips and makes a rattling noise, also when i am driving, the tires get caught in a groove on the freeway, the front wheels will follow the groove while i am holding the steering wheel straight. it seems as though something is wrong with the rack and pinion, or a defect in the steering assembly/linkage. i have brought the car in to 3 local dealerships here in las vegas and all of them claim that there is nothing wrong with the car, after looking at it, i noticed on your website -that there have been many problems with the transmissions/suspensions of these specific cars. please note that the car is still under the manufacturer's warranty. is there something you could do to help us get this problem corrected? *jb

I have 16,000 miles on my 2001 grand am and have had it in twice for a leak in the heater core and twice for water leakage from rain. once again my car had water in it. went to dealership friday 2-21-2003 and they said i couldn't get my car in until march 3 because they had so many with the same problem. i need my car, so i went home and sucked all the water out. that same night it rained again, and sure enough, about 1/2 of water on the floor. so now i have a new car that smells like mold.the other thing is they told me after my warranty was up i would have to start paying for the repairs myself. my car is already ruined, and it sounds like the problem cannot be fixed. this is the fourth time it has leaked. what should i do? why don't they recall them if it is defect?

I have owned my 2001 grand am since the later part of 2000 and for the past two and half years i have had nothing but problems with the barkes. i have went thru three sets of pads and it has made a grrinding noise after about two months of ownership. the abs light is know starting to come on and this car is the one my wife uses on a daily basis and i am worried that due to the frequency of barke problems it is not safe for her to drive. the car only has 41,000 miles and partly due to we do not trust the vehicle and due to the low book value of the car we will lose if we try to trade but are put into a psotion to for know hold on to it.

While driving the spindle that holds tire axle broke, tire fell off. also had no brakes, and lost control of vehicle. dealer contacted.*ak consumers son was driving. gm is not taking responsibility for failed part. consumer spoke with many mechanics who informed that metal was not supposed to break the way it did. consuemr had previously complained of a noise emmitting from the vehicle when the steering was turned.*jg.

Vehicle was involved in a frontal collision at 55 mph. upon impact, air bags did not deploy, causing minor injuries to driver. manufacturer has been notified. please provide further information.*ak

Rack and pinion was replaced. when starting vehicle in the morning and backing out wheel will lock up as soon as consumer starts to turn. please provide more information.*ak

Gm's anti theft device "passlock 1" system malfunctions and the car will not start. once it starts to malfunction, it will get worse over time. i see this as a manufacturer defect and the manufacturer should take responsibility for this problem. so far it has only been a frustrating problem. we called the local dealer about the problem, and they said they could fix it at a cost of $450.00 . i think gm should step up and admit a problem and correct it. there are several forums on the internet complaining about this same problem. this has become a 2 and 3 times a day problem, pretty much happen every time we try to use the car. *jb

For the past 4 months pass lock malfunction leaving me stranded, late for work. currently, it will start and then stall leaving me in intersections during busy times of the day. this is a safety risk to others as well as myself. plan to go to the dealership for repair. *tr

We were on our way home from vacation, we heard what seem to be a clicking noise that sounded like one of the turn signals was on. they were both off but the clicking sound kept going on and off. on our way to our house, we put the turn signal on to turn and it would not shut off and smoke started coming out of the steering column, like it was starting a fire or something in there. it got hot so we shut the car off. when we turned it back on the turn signal was off and the smoke was not noticeable. so we continued to take it home. i am afraid to drive it in fear that it might do it again and catch fire. please help me. i seen that there was a recall on the exterior flasher and turn signal parts but what about the interior electrical parts. *tr

There was a clicking sound in the dash near the turn signal switch. it would constantly click as if the blinker was on while driving down the road. he mechanic said it would eventually would wear out and need replaced costing $350. it has not been replaced yet. *ak

After the dealership replaced the hazard warning switch for the recall 03v327000 the turning signal was still not operating correctly. *ak the turn signals and hazard lights worked intermittently. the dealer replaced the hazard switch but the turn signal were still working intermittently. the dealer suggested that the flashers had nothing to do with the recall. also, the vehicle did not pick up speed, hesitate, and start slowly. *sc *jb

While traveling approximately 65 mph another vehicle crashed into consumer's vehicle's front/right fender, and both frontal air bags failed to deploy. one passenger suffered a broken clavicle, and another passenger sustained an elbow injury. vehicle had not been examined to determine if air bags should have deployed. please provide any additional information / attachments.*ak

The body control module randomly shuts off safety systems or prevents the engine from starting. causes all of the dashboard warning lights to come on. dealer "re-set" the "computer". gm says caused by operating the key from accessory to start without waiting 15 seconds. not mentioned in manual. switch positions are off - acc - on - start. gm says no fix available or planned. dt

The turn signals work only occasionally. also a coworker has a daughter that is having the same problem with olds alero. a dealer south of here says he has a lot of complaints on both cars. dt

Took my pontiac grand am gt1 into the dealer after i was out on the highway and experience a vibration from the streering wheel. i was traveling at about 60 mph when a vehicle cut over into my lane forcing me to brake. i then noticed a lot of vibrating on the steering wheel.*ak

I have had rotor problems with the car since i purchased it. the day i drove it off the lot i could feel the grinding of the front brakes but thought it was just new and needed to break in. what it does is when i slow down to a stop, especially from highway speeds, i can hear the grinding and rattling of the brakes and the pedal with the steering wheel wobbling to the point it is hard to control. the car is progressivley becoming worse and the stopping distance is becoming much longer as i drive it. i have not taken it to the dealer because from what i know from others who purchased the same car, the dealer seem to want grind the rotor down which does nothing. i believe it is larger problem than that and there should be a recall/examination before soembody get hurt.*ak

Child seat in the back is designed to dip too far toward the crack and is incompatible with rear facing infant seats. in order to make the base fit and the seat level, i have to use 4-5 towels. i feel that this makes the ride unsafe for my newborn daughter.*ak

Brakes pulsate and front end shakes when stopping. harder stops produce more violent shakes. brakes make a grinding noise, especially when wet. during 4 regular service calls to the dealer the issue was brought up and no problems could be found. rotors were resurfaced at 6000 miles. the problem became progressively worse. we were told "the pads fell apart" at 25,000 miles and the rotors would need to be resurfaced for the second time and that it isn't covered under warranty.*ak

The starter will crank but it will not start it takes 2 to 3 times to get the car started. the fuel pump has already been reaplced.*ak

I have had rotor problems with the car since i purchased it. the day i drove it off the lot i could feel it but thought it was just because it was brand new and needed to loosen up. what it does is when i slow down to a stop, especially at higher speeds coming off the highway, i can hear grinding, the steering wheel and brake pedal wobble. it's really noticeable when it has been raining outside. i took it to the dealer one week after i bought it and they grinded the rotors down and told me it was defective rotors from the factory. it started doing it again after about 2 weeks, i took it back about 2 months later and the dealer replaced the rotors. once again i was told that defective rotors were used to replace the original defective rotors. it started doing it again so i took it back to the dealer in october, they test drove it and said it sounds a little funny and that i probably am driving it wrong. it was noticeable at 35 miles per hour and i drove it off the lot with it. it is still constantly doing it and it scares me at times because i know my stopping distance has to be longer now. i haven't taken it back to the dealer because it is embarrassing because i know they think i'm doing something wrong. i think a recall should be done, at least to replace the defective rotors with ones that work. pontiac called me after the first incident because i submitted a bad service survey to them after all the problems the dealership gave me but never heard from them after the second and third incidents.*ak

Since nov 2001, both front rotors have been resurfaced twice and replaced once. this seems to becoming a monthly occurance with a potential for major problems. *ak

This auto was parked for 6 hours, prior had filled fuel tank , awaoke at 1:30 am seeing this auto parked next to my 1979 ford ranchero which had not been moved in over 12 hours afire. fire was at right rear of pontiac setting next to left front of 1979 ford ranchero. understand national tv station ran a story about the 2001 grand am catching fire after being parked ? information appreciated. if a defect this might save some one from property loss or fataliy. thanks ansd may god be with you and your agency. joe conner. *ak

The vehicle came equipped with wide tires. the consumer was told that these tire would perform the same as normal tires. the consumer later found out that these tire were not safe for snowy or wet weather. the dealer refuses to replace the tires with a softer rubber tire (goodyear eagle 225- 50 r16). *nlm

While in motion downhill, consumer started hearing a grinding noise and a metal to metal sound emitting from the fire wall in front of the brake and gas pedals. once on level ground, the vehicle seemed alright. consumer called the pontiac dealer to inquire about the steering problem and was informed it sounded like a rack and pinion assembly problem. consumer was asked to bring the vehicle in for inspection. the day before vehicle was to go for inspection, the vehicle pulled to the right causing consumer to loose control,and crash into a barrier wall, there was 1 injury and the air bags did not deploy.*jg
