I’m disgusted. When I called the jeep hotline they informed me they were not even doing an inspection on the gas tank because I never purchased a hitch. If it was a 94-98 they would install a hitch for us. Even though it’s the same setup as the older models they were doing nothing for us. Disgusting. I will NEVER do business with them again. The woman was nasty in the phone.

Encountering the Jeep “Death Wobble.” This is a serious safety issue. It is impossible to control your vehicle, it is damaging other parts of the vehicle and does not quickly straighten out when applying the brakes. This is a known issue by Jeep. Why are they not recalling and fixing this problem? This is a fatal accident waiting to happen! As a Jeep Fan I have lost all faith in their vehicles. Jeep I’ve been there for you all these years. Where are you now???

While driving my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee TO WORK I WAS DRIVING 55MPH when the passenger side rear frame rusted off from then axle brace. The tire hit the back bumper spun me around and put me in the ditch missing a pole by inches. Then the car was towed. Found out the frame is rotted out beyond repair. This 38,000 car always in the garage and now it’s junk. Is there a recall. After looking at auto safety complaints there is a major problem and people will be killed by this. The Frame should not ROT like this letting the Axle to break free from the frame.

I bought the jeep from a used car dealer and paid over 8,000.00 in bank loan. When I drove it off the lot the power steering went out 4 months later and then eventually started breaking down with engine failure and shocks, back end and God knows what else. The problem with the steering started approximately 4 months after the vehicle was bought. The fluid leaked completely out and steering was hard to turn ending in a somewhat dangerous situation.

Bought a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee on March 21, 2014 from Don Hill Automotive in Kingsport, Tn. Three days after the purchase the vehicle stalled in traffic creating a very dangerous situation for myself and other drivers around me on the road. I reported this to Don Hill by phone and was told to “Let it cool down and then try to start it again” It did restart and run a short distance before stalling again and it stalls 3 or 4 times a day since then. I call them every time it stalls. on May 15, 2014 I was told by the dealership to take it to the Advance Auto Store and have the technician put it on a code reader. The technician told me it had a bad Crankshaft sensor. Upon returning to the dealership The manager and staff told me I was on my own, They would not fix the vehicle now or ever. I am 63 yrs. old and disabled and after spending all the money I had on the down payment, I cannot afford to get a mechanic to repair the car. I feel that Don Hill automotive knew of the defective nature of this vehicle, Hence the Statement by them on the third day after purchase, “Let it cool down and try to start it again”. This dealer ship also sold me a ’97 Jeep in 2010 that my Wife was killed in a crash after failure of the air bags to deploy on Jan. 24, 2014.

WE HAVE HAD VARIOUS PROBLES WITH OUR JEEP SINCE WE PURCHASED IT IN SEPT 2001. THERE ARE SMALL RUST SPOTS ALL OVER THE JEEP AND THE JEEP DEALERSHIP KEEPS SAYING THAT IT IS DUE TO INDUSTRIAL FALLOUT AND RAIL DUST.WE CAN NOT GET ANYONE AT THE JEEP DEALRSHIP TO HELP US WITH THIS PROBLEM. ALL THE THE BRAKES HAD TO BE REPLACED. WE HAVE HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE FUEL TANK AND IT HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT KEPT COMING ON FOR OVER 3 MONTHS AND WE HAD TO BRING THE JEEP IN OVER 3 TIMES TO GET IT FIXED. THE BOLTS THAT HOLD THE CLADDING ON THE THE CAR KEEP FALLING OUT. WE HAVE CONTACTED BOTH JEEP AND THE GENERAL MANAGERS OF THE JEEP DEALRSHIPS WE HAVE HAD OUR CAR SERVICED AT AND NOONE SEEMS TO CARE.

Vibation of front brakes when mid or heavy application. Some vibration on normal stoping.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN,The transmission went out totally on this vehicle.I have talked to Chrysler,Car City the dealer I bought it from and Roundtree Dodge.When I bought the JEEP I was told by their saleman that everything had been serviced including the Transmission because they had told me that the jeep had been a rental.So naturally ,My wife and I wanted this done.Now their service department is saying they have no record.Also Chrysler is not wanting to help me and have been very rude in talking to my wife.In my jeep I have their service manual and on their website they say 7/70000 mile warranty.Well, they are not honoring me for the simple they say that Car City needs to show the transmission was done.I believed them,but now they all have ignored me and don\’t want no part.I believe this has been very bad business and I could have been injured or maybe injured someone else.I need to get my money back that I spent which is 2100 dollars.Also, these company\’s need a wake-up call from someone other than my self because they are screwing the consumers.Sincerely,Gary L. This vehicle requires resurfacing or replacement of the disk brake rotors about every 12,000 miles. At this point the rotors warp and poor braking along with steering shimmy when stopping occurs. I understand that brakes are a wear/maintenance item however this is unreasonable. There are alternatives in the market for different types of rotors (slotted or drilled) that don\’t have this problem when installed on a Jeep. Consequently this is a problem with Jeeps because of an engineering decision by the manufacturer.

This is going back a little. All numbers above are approximate. I ended up trading in this vehicle in 2003 (at great expense to myself), as this one had so many issue. I will never buy a Chrysler again, and will never go back to the dealership which I was using (5 star dealer? maybe in a Circus)1. The paintwork scratched and chipped just by looking at it. In the dealership, a lady was rubbing the paintwork with her sleeve (as I was complaining about the paint), and left scratches in the paintwork. They just shrugged them off.2. My drivers heated seat stopped working.3. Drivers seat was loose. They told me that this was normal. Never fixed it. Every time I accelerated, it would clunk back, and when I braked, it would clunk forwards.4. Rotors had to be changed at 12000 miles, then again at ~24000 miles, then when I sold the vehicle (about 41000 miles) they needed replacing again. Dealership told me that it was my driving that was causing it.5. Steering clunked when moving the steering wheel. After complaining several times about it, they decided that there was a problem afterall, and changed steering gear. Later on, my steering would suddenly tighten up (especially when doing a U-Turn). It basically felt like the power steering had given up. They refused to even look at this and said that it was normal for all power steering to do this.6. Radio would randomly make loud bang and reset itself to factory defaults. Sometimes this could be a coule of times a week, sometimes, it may not do it for a month. Dealer asked me to \"show them the issue\". When I could not show them the issue (as it is intermittent), they told me that I had no issue. They would not assist in any way, other than telling me to get a rental (paid for by me of course) while they had my Jeep for a month. This started happeing from day 1.7. Headlights went out while driving at night. Took it in. They could not find any problems. This only occured once, however, the passenger interior light would randomly come on and stay on for 20 mins or so, then go off again. This happened many times. Took it in, and they could not find any issue.

The rotors on the Jeep warp every 5k-10k miles. I have replaced them 4 times since I purchased the vehicle brand new in 2001. I have 76000 miles on the vehicle and the rotors have warped a fifth time and need to be replaced. I have spoken to and read of hundred if not thousands of similar complaints.

The milage is a mystery to me now since no one (even the dealer and DMV in Melbourne) can provide me any evidence or statement showing the true milage or prove the record back in 2004 was incorrect. The dealer did not even take this issue seriously, they did not try to do a thing. The car was not in good condition after only 8 days from my purchase, and they told me it is not under the warranty they told me when they tried to sell me this car. The heat quit working on the drivers side, it only blows out cold air, while the passenger side works correctly. After I started checking about getting it repaired, I found out from two seperate dealers that this is a common problem and it is a labor consumming job to repair it. They considered me lucky because most of the other Jeeps quit working on both sides.

Started having problems with my seat back in March of 2003 so had chrysler dealership take a look at it. They stated that the seat assembly was broken and they would have to contact chrysler about covering possible repairs. Chrysler agreed to pay half of any expenses that were incurred. The dealership then replaced part of the frame assembly for the seat and brakets costing me 214 dollars. Approx 3 weeks later my seat is broken again and I again took vehicle into the dealership. They now state that the lft seat frame is broke and was not part of the orginal fixrepair. The cost would be approx 475 dollars to resolve. Due to the defect it is unsafe for me to drive the vehicle do to any crash of fast action may result in the unloding on the seat. I have been unsuccesfull in contacting chrysler directly and havent had this issue fixed.

Squeaking brakes, rotors replaced,continual squeaking.Goodyear tires that are bubbling at the sidewall,model #P225/75R16 .Are there any recallsfor these tires? My tire service tells me the side bubble is normal

Recently purchased a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with weeks of first owning the vehicle I started to notice the pulsing brake pedal. Very slight at first and at other times extremely violent. My paint started peeling within 2 months of purchase. Reported it to Chrysler and dealer. Chrysler said it was environmental damage and told me to have my insurance company pay for it! Have been fighting Chrysler and dealer for 3 years now. They have been putting me off over and over. Finally I went to dealer manager and he offered to paint vehicle even though Chrysler has refused to pay. But—now they don\’t seem to want to deliver the agreement papers. They promised to deliver them Mon August 2, but did a no show. Papers still aren\’t here and today Friday Aug 6, they (Southpoint Jeep)will not return my calls to service manager and dealer mgr. I feel like they are stalling again. Purchased at Southpoint Jeep in Austin, Texas. HELP!!!!

I have had to replace all four Window Regulators over a time period from April 2005 until August 2007. Eventhough this part on my Jeep was obviously defective Chrysler/Jeep refuses to repair the part for free or help in any way to defray the cost of repair. Repair cost for each have ranged from $370-$466.

I have had so many problems with this car since I bought it. I have an extended warranty on the car and it seems like everytime something goes wrong with my car that it isn’t covered by the warranty. I had my roters replace in April 2005 and I now need a new set of roters. I just found out that the blender doors have gone bad and they said this is a common problem with these cars. The doors cost 200.00 to replace them and I was quoted 1,100.00 because it is so labor intensive to replace them. My window fell off the track and again the quote was almost 1,000 to fix it. The parts are expensive and the labor is even worse. I am very disappointed.

60 month lease up in Jan 2006. Within first 2 months, rotors warped, and again two additional times within the next 2 years. Within second year, bolt fell off of fan and logged into fanbelt causing a tow into the dealer for repair. Within second year, driver seatbelt failed to function and had to be replaced. Within third year, motor under driver seat failed, and had to be ordered from \"1 available source.\" Within 4th year, driver seat\’s pivots wore out, and needed replacement. At 5th year, sensor within transmission failed, front hood hydraulic hinges wore out (I rarely open the hood). Dealer\’s service department hints that these are normal occurences, and laughs it off.

Overhead display ceases to work. online forums have pointed to a faulty wiring harness that has to be replaced at considerable cost. if the harness is faulty could it cause an electrical problem?

I own a 2000 jeep grand cherokee that has 2 potentially dangerous issues with it. due to a manufacturers design flaw, the brake lights malfunction on a regular basis. the light shorts itself out when the headlights are turned on leaving me with no brakes at night. in addition, the door lock actuator in my rear passenger door has broken. since jeep saw fit to only provide a key on the drivers door, this rear door neither locks nor unlocks which would result in a potentially lifethreatening situation if i were involved in a wreck and was unable to exit the vehicle from this door. my cooling fan broke, i replaced with a non-oem model which chewed a hole in my radiator after 100 miles. replaced radiator and fan. radiator broke after a year, re-replaced. after searching online i found that these are fairly common problems and not the result of some action on my part. *tr

On sept.2, 2014 i had my 2011 jeep grand cherokee towed to the nearsest dealer, milford chrysler, milford, pa. i was driving the day before with family when the vehicle suddenly stalled in an entrance to a parking lot just avoiding an accident. message center showed key not detectable. several attempts later it turned over. to play it safe i returned home to exchange vehicles. it was making hissing sounds so i left it out of the garage. the next day, it was still making noises. i called for a tow to the dealer. i called chrysler and they advised me of a recall but that the engineers were still trying to determine why but that the tipm was malfunctioning. i was also told that a final recall would not come out for about 3 months! i had no choice but to get my vehicle repaired. they had to replace the battery, fuel pump, tipm for a total out of pocket cost of $2493.98. chrysler eventually reimbursed me for the total amount. on november 20,2015 i went out and found that my blinkers did not work. in fact, when engaged, the fog lights blinked and or flashed. i took it to my original dealer, r.i. suresky in goshen, new york. they ran a scan and found that it was caused by the tipm ! this makes tipm #2!. i called chrysler, the final verdict, it was not covered by the recall (fuel pump related only). the tech replaced the tipm yet again at an out of pocket cost to me of $1043.40. on october 21, 2016 the engine light came on. i have an appointment at suresky's on monday october 24 to run a diagnostic on it. could it be tipm related? we'll see. i feel that chrysler owes me $1043.40 for having parts ( never available immediately by the way) that are defective and place people in very dangerous situations on the road.

The driver seat bracket snapped loose at the rear left side that holds the seat to the frame while driving. i was making a right hand turn when i heard the seat frame break. now when driving the seat is very loose and makes a clicking noise with lots of unstable seat movements. *tr

The 2001 jeep just came to a stop while it was being driven on the highway. it had always had engine issues. the front wheel suspension on the passenger side of the 2001 jeep cherokee laredo is bent and while driving it on the street or highway it causes the vehicle to pull to the left and is unstable when driving it on a highway or street. the engine has a knocking sound whenever it is running. the brakes to the vehicle has been slipping and making a grinding noise while driving it. sometimes the jeep doesn't want to drive over 70 mph when driving in the highway or street. we have had to replace the brakes because they started smoking while driving on the highway. there is electrical issues with the car as well where the radio doesn't play as well as other electrical parts don't work. my 2001 jeep has stopped while my husband was driving it on the highway and it is not drivable. i have had to replace the ignition coil and spark plugs many times for many years. there has always been a water leak on the passenger side dripping whenever the car is in motion, coming from the dashboard onto the carpet since the car was purchased. there may be other issues with the 2001 jeep that i have missed.

The fuel rail pulsation damper is leaking gasoline creating an environmental and safety hazard. this fuel rail assembly is on national backorder and not available. we need to elevate this situation in order to get a satisfactory repair procedure in effect. this is not an acceptable way for a national dealer to care for their vehicles, leaving the consumer to fend for themselves searching endlessly for a solution. there are jeep forums related to this issue dating back to 2015.

The casing holding the gas tank up in a safe manner has deteriated to a point that the fuel tank is now in danger of scraping the pavement while moving.

The car coolant finished

The 2001 jeep grand cherokees have an issue where the injectors get really hot and cause engine misfire and could catch on fire due to the exhaust manifold being right underneath them. the recall was already issue for these jeeps by providing insulators that are put on the injectors and between on the injectors and the exhaust manifold. my jeep already had the insulator installed but because the valve cover gasket broke and leaked oil all over the insulator blanket and soaked it with oil and made it a fire a hazard, i threw it away thinking that i can just buy a new one from chrysler. i went onto iwantmopar.com, a fca dealership (mcgovern chrysler jeep dodge ram on 777 washington st, newton, ma 02460), and ordered six injector shields and an insulator blanket to replace the one that was previously on my jeep. three week passed and i received an email from them refusing to sell me the recall parts, stating that my jeep had these parts already. how can a dealership refuse to sell me parts that make my jeep safe and compliant with federal laws? thanks

This jeep will run fine, but when it comes to red lights and idle, the car will shut off and not turn on again for atleast 10 minutes. spent about 3,000 usd to fix at multiple mechanic and the issue remains. why has jeep never taken the time to recall this issue as it can cause the lives of many drivers.

I was told back on 11/21/2014 that my jeep had a recall on it i was told to contact my local chrysler dealer so i did the guy was so rude i thought for get this, but then i kept on hearing about jeeps like mine if rear-ended the gas tanks would burst into flames with no time to get out, so your dead then i saw pictures of many many 2001 just like mine in very graphic detail and because of my husband getting into a bad car accident i started thinking i can't be taking any chances so i started making phone calls again and i spoke to a gentleman at nhtsa who was very nice and said he would keep a eye on my number and be in contact with me but then we moved and so on, but always up dated our contact infor. and also would always go to post office and do the change of address correctly, so if you or any one can help me please let me know, thank you

When driving at 45 to 50 mph the front end starts to vibriate and starts to shake uncontrollably,what's really bad is that you don't know when it will happen.i drove from savannah to michigan and back with no problems than when you least expect it than it happens ! it shakes so bad you can't drive so you have to pull off the road and stop and it seems to go away but it may return after another one or two thousand miles. i have brought to shops and have replaced front end parts,brakes,tires etc. they can't find the problem.i have read that it's a disign flaw with the coil springs being in a bad position. google jeep death wobble.you will find. i won't sell the car because i wouldnt want to put someone in danger.

Gasoline odor/check engine light have had this vehicle machanically checked the smell of fuel on startup with window lowered is overpowering..the check engine light came on and i had the vehicle plugged into service computer..was told too check gas cap/replace..which i did..the gasoline odor is still present and the check engine light is back on..so new gas cap isnt the problem. there are no leaks anywhere on the engine or at the gas tank, yet the smell of fuel is still present. no gas line leaks...we need to make these trucks in america again with american parts. have always owned jeeps have a 93 sport in my driveway right now, but this '01 may be my last...literally.

I am concerned that my gas tank is a hazard if in a rear end collision. my gas tank is in the rear of the jeep and if hit in the back would be the first thing to impact. it looks the same as the jeeps that have been recalled. but i don't see a recall.

I took my vehicle into larson jeep dodge in puyallup, wa to have two recalls preformed. one of the open recall campaigns are recall f25. this recall involves replacing the electric cooling fan. if not replaced it could separate causing damage to the radiator, engine, or bodily injury. i picked up my vehicle on the day that it was in the service department. i signed and was giving a repair order number jecs380694 dated 2/25/2016. the invoice states the recall was preformed and the cooling fans were replaced as directed by the recall campaign. on the drive back to my residence i noted a rattle coming from the front of my vehicle with increased speed or when driving over bumps. when i returned to my residence i opened the hood to find out what was causing the rattle. i noticed none of the upper grill bolts were installed and the grill was loose. i then inspected the lower skid plate of the vehicle and noticed it was loose and unfastened as well. i then inspected the cooling fan blades and found they had not been replaced as directed by the recall or as stated on the repair order. i have attached a copy of the repair order and pictures of the unrepaired vehicle. i have opened a case with daimler chrysler, case #28814838. i did return back to larson dodge 2/26/2016 and requested the hardware back to fasten my grill and skid plate. the service manager and shop foreman inspected my vehicle at that time. they inspected, determined, and admitted the recall was not preformed. i informed them i would be returning home and contacting the vehicles manufacturer.

This a is known (very common) problem on most jeeps after a certain mileage. the air bag light and bell alarm constantly chime to let you know that the airbag is not active or inop, and wont work. there is a part in the steering wheel under air-bag called a "clock-spring" that goes bad on tens of thousands of jeeps. they (chrysler) know about it. it should be recalled,but they ignore the safety hazard and defective design. this needs to be recalled on all models affected not just one year (which i think is 2004). *tr

I called jeep, they stated that vin number is not part of current recall. while attempting to repair both driver's and passenger's seat warmer system that was no longer working, and hasn't worked for years. i discovered that the factory installed heated seats had apparently shorted out and caused the foam cushion in the passenger seat to catch fire. i have not checked drivers seat yet. the wiring had burned a hole approximately 4 inches long and 1-2 inches deep. fortunately, the fire did not spread far within the seat. upon doing an online search, it appears that this is a very common problem. jeep repaired the heaters 2-3 times within the first 5 years and they would stop working within 2 years, it was too expensive to continually have them repair. *tr

I was driving about 45 mph when my jeep accelerated, i tried tapping the gas pedal in hopes that it would affect it. that didn't help, i had both feet on the brake, i pulled the e-break and it still wouldn't stop and i was redlining. i finally saw a redlight and decided to throw it in park and it rolled another 50 feet or so before finally coming to a stop. i jumped out and ran because it was still stuck and redlining. everything under the jeep was red and finally flames started coming out of the exhaust. the fire department hosed it down for about ten minutes before taking the keys out of the ignition. *tr

Complete engine failure caused the vehicle to suddenly loose all power. upon further investigation, the piston skirt had cracked and eventually broke away causing a complete failure of the engine. resolution was to replace the engine. this is a fairly common problem with the jeep 4.0 engine after the piston was redesigned around 2000-2001. jeep should have recalled the vehicles and replaced the pistons before they started cracking and causing engine failures. *tr updated 05/29/13*lj

Passenger side warm air flow from heater stopped. only cold air blows out. driver side is operating fine. evidently the air blend door has failed. this appears to be a chronic problem with this jeep vintage. i do not understand why a recall has never been issued for this common design failure. the fix is very expensive and involves removing the whole dash. however, mopar even makes a repair kit for this issue kit #k6855685ab, that does not involve removing the dash. jeep should be forced to recall these vehicles and correct their design flaw. *tr

I was driving in the rain going the speed limit. my jeep hit a pool of water on the surface of the highway and started to skid and hydroploane. the next thing i knew it was flipping over and landed on the shoulder of the highway. i was lucky to be wearing my seat belt. i was suspended upside down by my seatbelt. i was able to unbuckle it and crawl out the drivers side window which was completely blown out. seconds after i got out of the car it burst into flames and the entire vehicle was engulfed and burned completely inside and out. there was nothing left of it but burnt frame. as soon as the car came to a stop upside down, i smelled gas and just a minute or two later the car was totally burned up. *tr

The plug and wiring to the blower motor on many jeep vehicles is burning up. i do not believe the plug or the wires, including the tabs the plug connects to, are heavy enough to carry the load of the blower. it is fused at 40amps. *tr

Car started to run really bad then when i tried to crank it backup it ran for a few minutes and died. i noticed gas then flames coming from exhaust pipe. it will run for few minutes but really bad , then it will die. it want crank immediately after it dies you have to wait a while before it will crank again. i haven't been able to find out what the problems are to correct them. *tr

Had cruise control on at 70 mph in normal driving conditions on the interstate (70 mph speed limit). put foot on accelerator to speed up in order to change to left lane and better clear the traffic behind me. initial accelerator push yielded no response, so i pushed further down on the accelerator pedal. when the pedal reached the floor, acceleration shot up and i took my foot off the accelerator. cruise control was still engaged and i expected my speed to go back to the set cruise speed of 70 mph. i noticed then that the acceleration continued to increase and i tried to break once on the break pedal. i got no response. i pushed harder on the break and felt the acceleration continue to increase and then smelled brake heat. i pushed on the cruise button to try to turn cruise off. no response. i felt the accelerator pedal which was flat to the floor and tried tapping it to get it to spring back up. no response. then i shifted into neutral and saw the engine rev to the redline on the rpm gauge. i took it back into drive and still the acceleration continued as i held the brake harder and harder. knowing i was not doing anything to fix the problem i called 911 that i was accelerating out of control and i needed their guidance. the 911 dispatcher told me to: (1) put the car into neutral and keep it there, (2) start pulling over as the car slowed, (3) engage the emergency brake, (4) pull the car over to the side of the interstate, (5) turn the ignition key off and brake to a stop. i asked the 911 dispatcher to send police who came and waited with me for a tow truck. *tr

Power windows-front passenger side regulator failed ~july '09 getting back in the car from church put the window up heard loud snap and window dropped, had to stop window from falling into door panel by holding it all the way home until we could figure out what to do-taped it up. driver side window started out as a motor failing in jan '11 and when i went to get my oil changed asked them not to put window down because of that (didn't want it to get stuck in down position), window got put down and that was the start of the end. by feb '11 the window had failed no snaps but will slide down if not held up with something. now both of my windows are done for and being held up with tape, can't afford dealership pricing to fix. passenger window went at ~85,000 miles went to dealership for pricing to fix ~$300/window + labor @ $90/hr driver window went at ~160,000 miles have been looking for parts online and in junk yards... if the windows are not pushed up all the way and taped securely they will leak from the rain or wind will get in and cause the truck to be uncontrollable! i didn't realize that there were so many problems with the windows, thought it was a freak thing apparently not. *tr

The head cracking issue seems to be the result of several bad castings and i can only speculate that the cast iron used in one large batch made around the year 2000 must have been of poor quality. the area between the no.3 and 4 exhaust ports is the hottest part of the head and is subjected to the largest temperature fluctuations, making that the area most prone to crack. the first sign of a problem is unexplained loss of coolant. if there are no external coolant leaks, remove the oil filler cap and look between the valve springs of the no.3 and 4 cylinders.

I was driving in a mall parking lot looking for a parking space. i was turning the corner to go down the next aisle and all of a sudden i had no control of the jeep. as i turned to the left to continue looking for a park, the jeep was speeding out of control and i was slamming on the brake with both feet and the jeep just kept accelerating! i was unable to steer away from the vehicles i was heading towards. as i was heading towards the first vehicle that i hit, i was trying to steer away from it and then the jeep turned to the right and kept accelerating. i ended up hitting four other vehicles ( 5 vehicles total) and finally came to a complete stop after hitting the last vehicle. there is extensive damage to my jeep and to the other vehicles involved. we have not had the damage accessed yet, so we do not know how much this will cost to fix. i believe my jeep is totaled. we are thankful nobody was injured and that i am ok, just shaken up a little.

Owner of 2001 jeep gr cherokee laredo. i wish to file this complaint about the driver's seat. started out with an annoying squeak and some popping on entrance, exit, acceleration, and braking of vehicle. within 1 mth of noticing this problem the front bolt broke away from the seat frame and metal then it went to the back right bolt. i have attempted to get this welded and was told it was too involved, i tried searching the junk yards for a used seat and apparently these seats are hard to come by, and have also spoke with the dealership in regards to getting this fixed and i was quoted a price but told no guarantee with the repair and the part was on a backorder. to date i have not been able to find the replacement or fix causing me not to pass inspection (when the inspector got in to check something else he wound up in my son's car seat.). i have had to put wooden blocks underneath but it still rocks back and forth. *tr

I own a 2001 jeep grand cherokee laredo, and the driver's seat mount has broken, allowing the seat to be connected to the floorboard by only 2 corners. the events leading up to the failure include a noise coming from the seat while seated in it, especially with weight shifts during turns. the seat is now not supported on the front left corner nor the back right corner. to attempt to correct the failure, i had a friend try to glue a plate on the front left corner to help stabilize it against the floorboard mount, but the same was not done to the back right corner due to the placement of it. i have done research online into the cost to fix this issue, and it seems it will cost $600-$1000 to replace the seat and it's mount. the seat now tilts into the middle, and the pressure of the seat on the seat belt receiver has now destroyed the center console also. it is also apparent that thousands of other jeep grand cherokee owners have had the same issue. this is not a "normal" repair that a consumer should have to face. jeep/chrysler refused to do anything. *tr

The car overheated and you can hear the boiled coolant flushing back into the reservoir and pouring out through the drain. this i found out was caused due to the malfunctioning or rather electrical shorting of the ecm (engine control module) located in the hood near the firewall behind the coolant reservoir. this causes a failure in the electrical system so the fan that is supposed to kick on when you turn on the air fails to start. i also recently replaced my inline-6 due to a crack in the engine block causing the coolant to flow and mix with the oil therefore, resulting in low levels or coolant in the reserve and the radiator. it also causes the oil level to increase drastically. *tr

2001 jeep cherokee rotors and pads have been replaced every year in the last 3 we owned it. this year i will have to do it twice. never buy chrysler again, they have issues with a product and don't attempt any solutions to fix them. brakes pulse very bad, very bad while braking and they are fine for the first 90 days of the repair but then go bad again. i believe while braking in rain or wet conditions warping occurs and once again the vibration comes back. i purchased high performance rotors and pads and at the same time as factory rotors and pads the same thing occurred again. recommendations: don't drive in wet conditions and get rid of truck, they say buy american but why???? poor workmanship and ignorance of the danger that could come of this shows they have no concerns for the american consumer so why should i have concerns for a business that is suppose to be a staple in the american economy. our government bailed them out... i bailed them out and this is the thanks i received,new rotors and pads at my expense. i hope they fold so that the product the bear their name to does not injury or cause death to people that hold trust in them. my only hope is that they close the doors on this company forever so that people can once again be proud of american products. signed, a very disappointed american consumer. *tr

I was driving my 2001 jeep grand cherokee yesterday morning and had unintended acceleration!! i bought this vehicle in great condition about 3 weeks ago and had 0 problems with acceleration until this point, and a very sharp point at that! i was traveling uphill and went to pass another vehicle doing approx. 20 miles per hour, i accelerated past the vehicle and all of a sudden the gas pedal went all the way to the floor as if the cruise control came on, but when i tried tapping and then(when that didn't help) i was holding the brakes as far down as i could but would not stop this vehicle that was charging forward with the engine at high revs.. i eventually was able to get the vehicle into neutral which calmed this down. it took the whole length of the street to stop this, and if there were any other vehicles on the road, there would have been a serious-serious accident!!! i am hoping there is something i can do to correct this problem but my mechanic has no idea what could have caused this. i of course came home and googled on my computer to find out if anyone else has had a problem with this, and there are many, many with horror stories of major accidents! i would like to know if anything can be done as i love the vehicle but cannot put peoples lives in danger if this is to happen again.. i have had many cars over the years and have never had anything remotely dangerous as this happen, and i have had no accidents to this point!! with a v8 engine, this vehicle is like a tank charging, and very very very dangerous!! i was very luck, this time!! *tr

The driver's seat frame failed. prior to investigating why the seat back wobbled and did not offer support while driving. i contacted the local jeep dealer where the unit was purchased. they told me i needed a new seat frame assembly. i asked if there were any complaints or recalls, they replied with "none". the vehicle is primarily driven by my wife and has only 45,000 miles and change on it. the dealer told me the cost of the seat frame assembly would be about $1200 not including labor to remove the covering and replace the frame. etc. the dealer offered no financial assistance saying that the vehicle was out of warranty. i took the vehicle to a local repair shop and they stripped off the covering revealing a cracked bottom seat frame. they ordered a jeep bottom seat frame at a cost of $363.75 and charged me labor of $281.00 to strip off the covering, install the seat and recover accordingly. also, to compound the aforementioned neither the driver's side or passenger side height adjustments function. this is not a result of the seat frame as stated above. is there any assistance you can render in terms of reimbursement? i can provide photos of the failed seat frame assembly as well as copies of the monies paid to take care of the repair. ii have researched this problem extensively on the internet and there are volumes of similar complaints. a serious residual of this seat frame failure has resulted in the seat totally collapsing to the rear with a sudden stop or impact leaving the driver in a dangerous reclining position. it's unfortunate that perhaps not enough people who have experienced this problem may not have taken the time to report it to the proper agencies or authorities. please help before someone is hurt or killed. *tr thank you.

I own gene's automotive repair. i have been repairing vehicles for over 40 years. my customer brought in his 2001 jeep grand cherokee for a brake check due to squealing. the pads were fine, but i noticed a lot of rusty dust. i was going to remove the caliper anchor pins to grease them and found them seized in the bore. prior to this, i test drove the jeep and noticed the brakes didn't seem to be slowing as fast as i felt it should. the seized pins are the reason for this because as the pads wear, the pins should slide inward to accommodate the wear. if this problem had continued for an extended period of time, i suspect the anchor pins would eventually bend or shear off under the hydraulic pressure from the caliper. if the angle were to get severe enough, i believe it would seize the piston in the bore. the cause of this is possibly water intrusion past the anchor pin seal. i believe this design is dangerous and should be redesigned. *tr

I am going to paste below what i wrote on unsafecarseats.com. i am dumbfounded that i have had this car for 5 years and this is the first i've heard about this. when i first noticed the gen3 seat belt problem with my infant seats i thought, this can't be right, if there were an issue with these seat belts they would have been recalled and i would have been notified. i am really disappointed in the nhtsa. it is a real problem: i have 6 mo old twins and a 4 yo son. they are 3 across in the backseat of my 2001 jeep grand cherokee limited. on several occasions i have noticed that the belts holding the infant seats have become undone after making sure repeatedly that they were buckled and taut. this is absolutely a real problem! i even went so far as grilling my 4 yo if he undid the buckles in 'fun'. he repeatedly denied it. however, he could not have done that to the far outboard seat (he sits in the other outboard seat) while i was driving, and that's when i began to scratch my head. then i thought, well ok, maybe my infant car seats are really clunky and sometimes when i lock them into the base or get them out, they are jostling the belt open. but, would that be ok either?? the belt lock is incredibly sensitive and defective. put in perspective, if a base moving against another or putting the bucket in or out of the base causes a malfunction, well then it does not take a degree in physics to know that a collision would do the same thing. i am amazed i have not heard about this until now! what irresponsibility! all the times i took my car to the dealership, not a peep. thanks to babycenter.com for directing me here. *tr

I bought my jeep grand cherokee in 2005 as a used vehicle with no know problems on my car fax report. has only had one other owner. this is now the 4th time i have had to have the cooling fan relay replaced! im sick of this and have heard from auto shops and dealers that this is a very common problem.... jeep should do something about this. it seems to go out about every 6 months. i can't keep affording this. it is ridiculous. you have to remove the whole front end to get to the relay to replace it and that in labor costs can cost a fortune on its own for a $90.00 piece to be replaced. my truck has now over heated 4 times because of this little fuse failing. due to the over heating i have had to replace the water pump 2 times. i love jeeps but not enough for it to keep nickel and diming me to death. this problem needs to get resolved. *tr

Please accept this email as a request for help with a common problem concerning jeep grand cherokee owners and problems having to do with ?blend doors? in the hvac system. my vehicle, which my wife drives, heats on the driver's side, but blows cold air on the passenger side. it occurred all at once. it is also a real safety hazard as it creates an icing hazard on the windshield. the cost of repair through a dealership appears to range from $900 to $1500. i have sent an email through the jeep.com website just before typing this to you. i also believe that the apparent inaction of the manufacturer to address this issue in a favorable manner is reckless endangerment of the general public. since they are not addressing it many are seeking less expensive remedies and short-cut fixes, or attempting to do the repair on their own. i can see where this could then flood the used car market with faulty and shoddy repairs. i have to question whether or not it is cost effective to keep the vehicle after it is repaired. there are even numerous posts that indicate the dealerships are not fixing the correct problems with added expense to customers. and still others that indicate that the dealers do not want to spend the time to do the repairs due to the difficulty and time consumed, and the very real possibility that this repair will spark other problems. there are some who note that taking the dash out and reinstalling it causes all kinds of problems with malfunctioning controls. again, it?s a real safety problem in northern areas of the country. and many people in these areas look for 4 wheel drive vehicles as a safety factor for driving in just those conditions when heat is needed in order to see clearly. it certainly raises the question of whether there have been accidents and injury from this kind of issue. i have not yet decided how to effectuate the repairs to my 2001 jeep grand cherokee limited. *tr

My 2001 jeep grand cherokee will not provide heat on the passenger side, only the driver's side. the vehicle also has some sort of electrical short and the entire system, including the radio will reset and start. in addition the fuel system is reluctant to pump fuel to the engine on a cold start. the dealerships advised me that the car is not built to last forever and the fuel issue and heating issue was typical. the expense however would be extreme for the heating and fuel issues to be $800 to $1200 for each repair. *tr

The 1999-2004 grand cherokee is built with blend doors to control the heater and ac function. the doors are controlled by a stepper motor that seeks an open and close setting every 20 times the jeep is started. the end points for open or closed are set by a plastic pin that is part of the plastic door assembly. when this pin breaks, the stop points become the open and closed position of the door. eventually, the doors will break(see picture). the most common fail mode is for the broken door to fall to the bottom of the box, blocking the heater core no heat. also, in this position, the door does not do an efficient job of blocking the heat input, and the ac efficiency suffers. the door can also hang in a position where it closes neither the heater core nor ac condenser inlets. when this happens, you have a constant mixture of heat and ac?too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer. - the factory solution is to replace the doors and housing with an upgraded part that has a stronger plastic pin to withstand the constant opening and closing when the stepper seeks its beginning position. the repair entails removing the dash panel, steering wheel, all vacuum and wiring harnesses, draining the coolant, evacuating the ac system, and finally removing and repairing the heater box. quotes will range from $1200 to $2200 for the repair...if you can find someone willing to spend two days disassembling the car. it's not difficult, just detailed, and evacuating and refilling the ac refrigerant requires epa certification. dealers don't like to do this because it ties up a technician for an extended period of time and the chances of missing a wire or messing up the re-assembly is high. this is a design flaw! they are aware of the problem and no longer use the same parts when they fix it. the consumer should not be responsible for the outrageous cost of covering their mistake. *tr

As i drove on local roads, i noticed the brake pedal sank lower and lower with each stop. the brake light came. i made it to the repair shop, where the mechanic found two metal brake lines had ruptured due to corrosion, resulting in loss of brake fluid. also, he noted the metal fuel rail had ruptured due to corrosion. all three are being replaced. this vehicle, which was purchased new, is not driven on the beach or along the ocean shoreline. it is driven only on surface streets and has never been submerged in a flood. it has never been in an accident. it is well-maintained, with oil changes every 3,000 miles, and regular tune-ups and filter changes. it is kept washed and waxed. i find it unnerving that two crucial systems suffered catastrophic failure in just 5 and half years, leaving the vehicle vulnerable to accident or fire. i don't know if this is due to a lack of corrosion protection or just an inferior metal, but i can tell you that in 32 years of vehicle ownership, i have never encountered such safety failures. *tr

The regulator on the drivers side window failed and the window dropped. it would not stay up on it's own. i took it to my mechanic (not a chrysler dealer). who discovered it was the regulator and replaced it for $275. less than a week later on sat. 9/15/07. the same exact thing happened to the passenger window. i contacted chrysler feeling there must be a defect for both to go within a week of each other. i was told there is no recall and they would not assist me with the drivers window as i did not go to a chrysler dealer. they told me, for the passenger window, to go to a dealer, get a diagnostic done (at my own expense). submit that to them and they would make a determination if they would assist in my repairs. they also said if they did decide to assist, there would be a $100 deductible. so by the time i pay for the diagnostic, the deductible and have to arrange to get the car to the dealer twice, if they do decide to assist me. it's ridiculous. there are literally thousands of posts on line from people who have the same exact experience. one poor man's dog jumped out the window when it fell and was badly injured. i can't believe chrysler is allowed to get away with this at the consumer's expense. this has been going on with these regulators for years. they need to be held accountable. *jb

I have had to replace all four window regulators over a period of time from april 2005-august 2007. i will be driving down the road and my window starts slowly dropping. the only way to then raise the window is to pay around $466 to replace the regulator. chrysler customer service has been no help. *tr

When a right turn is made the steering column makes a sound like the horn is blowing. first reported in 2001 while car was under warranty and dealer said he couldn't reproduce it. reported it 3 more times and dealer said he couldn't hear it. dealer claimed he would not disassemble steering column because, if no problem could be found, chrysler would not reimburse them for this labor intensive work. problem has gotten progressively worse, particularly when air temp is above 85 degrees. *jb

We purchased this vehicle used with a warranty insurance policy. the sales manager assured us that if you push a button or turn something on then the warranty would cover it. the first time we used the heater cold air came out of the passenger floor duct. the warranty covers the automatic temperature control, but the dealer claims this does not include the components of the automatic temperature control system. there is no such component as an automatic temp control, but they dodge they warranty anyway. i have read that i will have to pay $1100.00 to repair this by the time winter comes or else i will have no defroster and will not be safe to drive. the dealers are quite aware of the problems associated with this system but unless someone forces a manufacturers recall the dealers do not receive compensation and will not stand behind their cars. this is a cold weather safety hazard and engineering defect costing consumers unfair and costly repair bills and time inconveniences. *jb

The engine revved at a very high rpms when starting. when changing gears it made a loud clung sound and wanted to lunge into that direction. the vehicle has never shifted properly between gears. it was almost like it was slipping, and then finding the right gear. it was not a smooth transmission either. since i purchased the vehicle a little over 1-1/2 years ago the car has been in the shop more than 15 times. the dealers could not find the cause of the problem. i had to replace a transmission sensor, 02 sensor, sun roof, rear end, and cd player. the heater blend door had to be replaced , which didn't sound expensive, but the fix was to remove the entire heater plenum and replace the broken door, stop and drive assembly. cost $890.00. *ak

2001 jeep grand cherokee laredo -- every window regulator has broken at least once. driver side window regulator has been replaced twice. windows fall down when regulator fails, which is potential broken glass hazard, according to the mechanic (which is why he refused to permanently wire the window up for me). i took off the back door panels and wired the windows up with steel wire myself to prevent them from falling (and saving me $800, or $400 per window). based on the number of complaints this is obviously a terrible design, and no one should have to spend thousands of auto maintenance dollars to get their windows to roll up! *tr

Brake rotors went bad. vehicle would vibrate when brakes applied. no problem with stopping if pressing hard enough. took to dealership, and mechanic indicated rotors needed to be replaced after test driving vehicle & felt the vibration. i felt there was a design defect and requested chrysler replace the calipers under safety issue because it was a design defect. they informed me it was not a design defect and i would have to pay for it. while researching the repair, i learned there was a redeigned caliper kit to alleviate the problem. why would they go to the effort and expense to redesign a systen that was functioning well? this happened at 55,000 miles. i feel this is a safety issue and should be addressed as such

The heater and defroster have completely malfunctioned. this has caused the vehicle to be unsafe in cold temperatures. sudden fogging of the windshield decreases visibility to near zero and forces the driver to pull over and manually wipe the windshield. this is a common problem to this particular vehicle and is very expensive to remedy. the average cost i have been quoted to fix has been 1485.00. the entire dash, steering wheel, air bags etc. have to be removed to access the faulty mechanism. i am concerned that if any of these major safety components are damaged or removed/replaced improperly it could lead to a serious injury to the occupants. the cost of the dealer repair will lead some to have these fixed by unqualified technicians and serious safety issues will arise from faulty airbag and steering component replacement.*ak

The window regulator assembly on our vehicle (2001 jeep grand cherokee) has broken on both the driver's side and passenger side windows. it costs us almost $600/window to repair. the part alone costs $330. we have never had this happen in any other vehicle we've owned, and we have owned other jeep vehicles, along with 25+ other cars. *jb

On my 2001 jeep grand cherokee limited climate control is not functioning properly. no matter what the setting is, it blows cold air from some vents and hot from others. the repair cost is estimated around $1200. the brakes were almost causing a loss of control while driving down the mountain road. the truck would start shaking violently as i apply the brakes, to the point where the steering was not affecting the behavior of the truck. repair and part replacements cost $820. outrageous! *jb

The hvac system in my 2001 grand cherokee jeep has gone out on both the passenger side and the driver side of my vehicle. i feel there should have been a recall on this items from chrysler corp. i understand there has been a problem with this mid-case blend assembly for quite some time. now it is going to cost over a $1000.00 to replace. i believe it should be seriously considered for recall because of the safety hazard of driving. the afternoon it went out, i was leaving from work and a blinding snow-blizzard came, the temperature dropped and i ran off the road, due to the my windows icing up and fogging up...i had no way to defrost them. i had to drive a considerable distance to get home. i put my vehicle in 4-wheel low and managed to get out of the ditch, but i was extremely lucky and very cold when i did reach my home. *jb

Engine would not start -- replaced fuel filter which was full of odd debris [mechanic, non-dealer, cut it open to inspect]. four days later same problem. did some research online and found several complaints that the gas tank lining can deterioatesand leave debris in tank which passes to filter then beyond. car is now at dealer awaiting diagnosis. dealer rep says he is unaware of any such problem with the gas tank.

When using heat during the fall/winter months in new hampshire, i can smell coolant from within the cabin. the windshield and windows are fogging really, really bad that causes visibility problems. this is a major safety issue. sometimes heat comes out of the passenger side vents, sometimes it doesn't. instead, cold air is blowing on the windshield. *nm

After going through some online troubleshooting, i just confirmed that the blend door went bad. and yes it is not one first problem i had with my 2001 limited grand cherokee jeep. 8 months ago the drivers side window regulator broke (as in all jeeps), my four brake calipers went bad by just replacing the old pads, and now this. one day, the car just started to blow cold air. before that, i could hear the noises under the dashboard but i thought it was the way it should sound. i had most of the times limited heat in my side and more in the passenger's side. i thought i'm too hot for the car and the sensor just plays with me. but enough is enough. for god sake, how do you want to sell "hardcore" cars, when your cars fail to work under climate garage kept conditions, and driven mostly on a flatland (florida) on road... you should be ashamed of your products. you should call the cheap and not jeep. *nm

When the weather started getting colder, i tried to use the heat and i couldn't get any hot air to defrost, when my windshield began to frost and fog. while driving home, i had to first pull over and wipe the interior of my windshield, then on my 21 mile drive home, i had to constantly wipe the interior of the windshield while driving. i took the jeep to the jeep/chrysler dealer and was quoted over $1500 for the repair. i can't afford this type of repair and do not have room on my credit cards. i managed to purchase the parts and do the repair myself, with my jeep out of commission for over 2 weeks. i replaced the heater core, recirc blend door, the mid-case blend door, and 2 actuators. i have been told that this can be a consistently aggravating problem and don't look forward to having to do it again. especially now that i have a newborn who will be traveling in the car. this can be a major safety issue, if this engineering discrepancy is not resolved. as far as i know, no one has been injured...yet. this is an accident waiting to happen. i have pictures of all the bad parts and documented repairs thank you. *nm

A faulty blower motor resistor has rendered my heater from working. the temp is around 20 degrees and without the blower, i cannot defrost my windows to drive safely. the blower motor resistor is out of the vehicle with visual electrical charring. the wiring harness is also melted. i've talked to 2 different dealers and their parts department has dealt with this problem before. so, i contacted the jeep customer service 800 number. but according to your "customer service" line, i need to get my vehicle back to the dealer so they can tell me what i already know. my question is why the blower motor resistor is back ordered 4,000-6,000 parts? and why if i take my vehicle back to the dealer, will i be expedited a part. are they creating a demand by not supplying the part and then the dealers raise the price of the part? i have already had one dealer say that if they locate one, that it'll cost more than the price advertised on their web site. this is the worse customer service i have ever had. *jb

My 2001 jeep grand cherokee with electronic dual climate controls requires major repair in order to cure hot air/cold air blowing from vents when they're not set to do so. the cost to repair this issue, which has been known to pop up again after another 50k miles after repair, is generally $800-$1500 from a dealership. should i opt to do this repair my, the entire dashboard will need to be removed, quite the arduous process, and parts are approximately >$300. *jb

2001 grand cherokee limited with dual zone climate control. thanksgiving day, noticed that no heat was coming from passenger side vents. thermostat was set to 80 degrees. shut off climate control unit, restarted, no effect. stopped and shut down car, restarted, no effect. no warm air comes through passenger side vents. drivers side works fine. climate control system will not switch between hot and cold air. driver is comfortable, passenger is miserable when it is cold outside. *jb

The defroster system blows only cold air making it difficult(impossible at times) to clear the windshield. this issue occurs repeatedly on cold raining days and makes visibility out the front windshield very poor. this issue could result in a serious traffic accident. the issue is well known in 99-04 jeep grand cherokees with the dual climate control systems. to correct the issue the entire dash, steering wheel, a/c evaporator and heater core must be removed to gain access to the blender doors and recirculation doors which are the cause of the issue. this issue occurs in 100% 99-04 jeep grand cherokees vehicles quipped with the dual climate control system, so the probability of a death(s) occurring due to this defect are extraordinarily high. please take the appropriate action to protect the public. *nm

I was in a head on collision that totaled my jeep grand cherokee while i was 30 weeks pregnant. the airbags did not deploy. i spent the weekend in the hospital as a result, and the baby needed to be monitored because i was having contractions. i informed daimler chrysler, they sent a letter with a brochure showing where the point of impact needed to be for the airbags to deploy, stating the car performed as it should have. however, in the brochure, it clearly indicates where the point of impact needed to be for the airbags to deploy, which is the same as where the point of impact was on the jeep. i sent a letter back to daimler chrysler via certified mail indicating this. i have had no response from them, and they will not give any information over the phone. *jb

While using the heat on my 2001 jeep grand cherokee the passenger side will get cold and no heat will come out from the passenger side vents just cold air. i went to the local jeep dealer to have the problem diagnosed, and they said that the passenger blend door actuator failed,and were going to charge $1,300.00 to repair and replace the damaged parts and is not covered under the warranty. i have been doing some research on this part and problem and from just putting the part numbers (#05134349aa auto a/c mid case blend assembly and #05134347aa auto a/c air recirculation assembly) into google it seems to be a common problem with most recent jeep grand cherokees laredo and limited. i have found at least two jeep forums where this problem is posted. daimler chrysler knows about this problem and has issued a technical service bulletin tsb (#24-001-04). i do not see why this has not been an issue of recall or falls under any warranty that is provided by daimler chrysler. *jb

On 2001 i bought a brand new jeep grand cherokee limited from a jeep dealer, little after i bought it i noticed a vibration when applying the brakes, but i did not think there was anything wrong, brand new and my first 4x4 i thought it was the way 4x4 works. until about a year ago that i received a letter about a demand made to chrysler from some other owners of grand cherokees that have the same problem and when they went to have it check at the dealer they were told that there was a problem with an uneven surface of the brake rotors. chrysler never took any action about this factory defect and denied repair of defect. after i received this letter i took my jeep to the dealer to have it check and i was told the same problem with the front disk rotors was causing the vibration on my car. i contacted daimlerchrysler by mail on october 2006, asking them to repair the factory defect and they never answer back, then i called them by phone to their customer relations center at 1-800-992-1997 and asked for an answer to my problem but they denied paying for any repair since i was out of the warranty period and i asked for a written decision but it was also denied and only given a reference number 15833938 for my inquire on 1-3-2007. as i said earlier in this letter, i was unaware of any real brake problem with my vehicle until i was contacted by a letter from a third party with the same problem as i dated june 1, 2006. daimlerchrysler never contacted me about this problem or did any recall on this and that is why i was out of the warranty period. thank you for reading my complaint and hope something can be done about it so this big corporation take responsibility for their products. *nm

Steering wheel rubs and shakes when turning at low speeds. loud rubbing sound like dragging your finger over a balloon. causes difficulty steering and is dangerous in parking lots. this is an ongoing problem and daily occurrence with the vehicle. i've owned two other jeep grand cherokees - a 1999 model and a 2000 model in addition to the 2001 jeep grand cherokee i'm having this problem with. they all had this issue. *nm

I stopped for a left turn at a 4 way intersection, in order to let the upcoming traffic pass. when it was clear, i started to turn left and slightly uphill. all of a sudden, the engine revved into the highs and with a loud noise, the car accelerated. i immediately hit the brake, but the car kept on accelerating so strongly that it was overturning to the left and while i was still on the brakes, it then accelerated into the door of a car, which was waiting at the red light and was actually standing 180 degrees towards my left, behind me when i started. the door of this car was turned significantly inwards where the front of my car hit. the other car was even pushed all the way to the curb until my car finally came to a stop. all this while i was standing on the brake. fortunately, nobody was hurt. although i had 2 witnesses, who testified the unusual acceleration and behavior of my car, i have been charged for this accident with significant damage on the other car, which turned out to be a total. my car was about 2 months old at this time, but i have been a secure driver with numerous models for more than 20 years. my long experience also includes driving a 10 ton utility truck in the military and i have never had anything similar happen. i asked my 5-star dealership to check into the electronics and the board computer. they said that they didn't find anything, so i had no case. however, i read about similar events and one in particular most recently, which provided a link to this complaint form. i didn't report this earlier, because i didn't know about this complaint possibility back then. however, the official documents are still available. thank you. jm . nm

Rotors, calipers and brakes need cut or replaced anywhere from 1 to 4,000 miles. as of this date, this is my 7th time! a pulsation in braking... the manufacturer has replaced or cut the rotors 6 times, the drive once, the calipers once and the brakes one or two times... i went to an independent on 11-29-06 and had 2 rotors replaced, 2 resurfaced/cut and brakes replaced with 26,500 miles on vehicle. a 2001 jeep grand cherokee limited. *jb

I have had 3 different power windows fail on my 2001 grand cherokee. each time the entire motor mechanism has to be replaced at $450.+ each and all that is wrong is a small plastic nut on the end of a metal cord. this is ridiculous. *jb

There was no heat on passenger side due to blend door failure. therefore defrosting the windshield properly was not possible. this was followed shortly by a leaking heater core which filled the car with coolant mist during vehicle operation. the blend doors assemblies were replaced along with the heater core to solve the problems. *jb

My vehicle, jeep grand cherokee 2001 limited addition with around 47,000 miles on the odometer performed satisfactorily until this morning when my wife was returning from the usual drop-off of my son to the preschool. as she was waiting for the garage door of the apartment complex where we live while her foot was on the brake, the car suddenly shot up and crashed through the garage door and came to complete stop 20 feet from the gate. this horrifying experience, fortunately, did not cause any physical injury to my wife and my 15 months daughter secured in the back seat. luckily, there was no incoming car nor people injured. however, we are afraid that the vehicle which sustained major damages to the body will not provide any more peace of mind. it is definitively a wake-up call for us to search a more safe vehicle for my family. *jb

The defroster doesn't work correctly due to the blend doors failing to open when needed. i see this as a very dangerous safety issue in cold/icy weather here in new england. it seem to be a common problem after speaking with the jeep service people and other grand cherokee owners. *jb

The hvac system in my vehicle quit supplying heat to the defroster vents and passenger side vents. on cold mornings it was very difficult to clear the moisture and frost from the windshield and windows. often times i had to drive with them fogged up due to the defroster not working. the cause was determined to be broken blend doors and failed motors inside the hvac system. i had to pay my local dealer $400 to get the problem fixed because i could not drive safely without the defrost working. they had to replace the driver and passenger blend doors and motors and the mode door and motor. the dealer decided to pay for the labor because they knew it was a very common problem. otherwise it would of cost me $1000 to fix. this failure is very common on the limited and overland (1999-2004) models that have the dual zone hvac system. it is also annoying that the dealers and the manufacture know this is common and don't issue a safety recall. *nm

I was never told that there was a problem with 1999-2004 jeep grand cherokees air conditioning units failing?! why has jeep done nothing about this problem!?! i am now stuck with a jeep that has uncontrollable air conditioning malfunctions.. i am very upset with jeep. *jb

Heating system worked fine until warm air suddenly stopped blowing out of vents. took the vehicle to the dealership and they said this was a common problem that they probably do about 3 or 4 a week. total repair bill was $780. i didn't have this kind of money and it apparently was never recalled, just tsb. it has been two winters now driving with extremely fogged windows due to no heat. jeep has done nothing to help with this huge expense. *jb

Air only blows one speed only at constant speed when accelerating and cuts off when braking. the air only blows hot air and the temp can not be changed. the air/heat started to not work correctly on the passenger side first then reached the drivers side. there is loud creaking noises coming from the dash when the unit is turned on or when the car is cut off. it can even be heard outside of the vehicle. *nm

Front drivers seat is broken. it's off the track and the bearings are broken, which could cause the driver to flip to the back seats if in an accident, leaving no one in drivers seat at all. *nm

I had a slow leak in my rear tires , so i went to get them plugged. i was told that the rims had rusted through the back tires and punctured the tires. i could not get into a jeep dealership for two weeks so my mechanic ordered a new rim (jeep part) and two new tires so that i could drive safely. jeep refuses to accept responsibility based on the fact that i had my own mechanic replace the tires. i was told that i should have waited two weeks. however, i was not going to risk driving on a faulty rim and tires. i still have the rusted out rims and punctured tires that jeep refuses to acknowledge. *jb

Purchased the car used august 2005. first noticed a vibration in the steering when braking around february 2006. took in to mechanic for oil change and had brakes changed. was advised that the rotors were warped and needed replaced. *jb

Automatic transmission began to slip then would not engage at all in the course of 2 days. the entire transmission was destroyed by the torque convertor "completely breaking apart" per the transmission shop resulting in the complete transmission having to be completely rebuilt at 83,000 miles. *jb

The left power window failed. i have only 50,000 miles and i took it to the dealer and the cost is $450.00. on the evening before this incident, i had all windows up. but on the next morning the left window was down and would not go back up. i took the jeep to the dealership they acted like it was a common occurrence. the mechanic knew the problem immediately before i could finish explaining what was wrong. the power mechanism had failed. the mechanic said that the window could down when the mechanism fails. this tells me that a lot reports to repair the power windows. of course nothing is being done about this problem by chyrsler. the mechanic told me without even looking for the pricing how much it was going to cost me. that's odd! i have never been to a mechanic and he did not have to get a pricing on the parts and then add in the labor. this mechanic had all the costs built into his head. the power window mechanism is defected and should be recalled. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated while traveling 20 mph, a loud bang was heard. the vehicle was pulled over and the contact looked under the vehicle and found the radiator was leaking fluid. the vehicle was driven to the contact's residence, and it was noticed there was a dent on the hood. when the hood was raised, the contact noticed the fan fractured causing the dent and the hole in the radiator. the dealership replaced the fan, fan shroud, and radiator.

Dt*: the contact stated while braking the steering column vibrated. the harder the brake pedal was applied the more the steering column vibrated. the vehicle was taken to the dealership in 2003 and the rotors were replaced. the vibration returned and the dealership stated the rotors need to be replaced a second time. the vehicle was located in a salt belt state. updated 10/25/2006 - *nm

Brakes started smoking and sticking 5.5 hours away from home while going on vacation. went to brake repair place and they determined calipers were sticking. couldn't get a rental car, jeep dealership wouldn't give us a rental car. calipers are covered under warranty. proceeded on to vacation destination w/brakes still not fixed. called the local jeep dealership and they couldn't even look at the jeep until a week and a half later, and we'd be back home by then. had jeep towed to a jeep dealership further away and it took some convincing on our part to get daimler chrysler to pay for the tow to the dealership that was further away. that jeep dealership had the calipers sent to them, but they got lost in the mail and they couldn't repair the calipers. they had the jeep the whole week we were on vacation. why didn't they (a) have calipers in stock and (b) overnight the calipers so they could be sure they got them? had to drive back home for over nine hours with brakes and calipers still not working properly. had jeep towed to our local dealership and they replaced 3 calipers, brake lines and brake pads. the calipers were covered under our warranty, but brakes pads and everything else wasn't and we had to pay over $500 for those to be replaced. i believe daimler chrysler should not have charged us for replacing anything because the calipers caused the brake pads and rotors to fail. i also think since the dealership couldn't repair the calipers they should have had the jeep towed to our local dealership and given us a rental car to get home. jeep only had 46,000 miles on it when this all happened. *nm

My daughter was driving her 2001 jeep grand cherokee on the freeway going about 65-70 mi/hour. when she tried to change lanes, the car swerved for no reason and crashed into the middle divider. the car has been totaled now. in addition, when she crashed into the divider, the car air bag did not open. i think there was a vehicle defect (either design or manufacture) in the jeep which caused this accident. *nm

I purchased a new jeep grand cherokee laredo in may of 2001. in july 2005, i noticed a pulsation in the brake pedal when decelerating from highway speeds greater than forty mph. the dealer said the rotors were warped, and recommended replacing the front brake rotors and brake pads. the cost would be over $300.00. the car has 13,00 miles. but it is over 3 years old, so repairs are not covered under any warranty. this problem is very common, and appears to be linked to the calipers as well as the rotors. replacing the calipers with design, as well as the rotors and pads reportedly eliminated recurrent problems. is a recall justified to correct this problem? *jb

Power windows broke and the car only has 50,000 miles it is a 2001 jeep grand cherokee. the power windows break in the doors. costing $450.00 to repair. the vehicle is always been kept in the garage. we have had them both break on the front doors in the three months. *jb

There is an ongoing problem with jeep grand cherokee a/c blend doors from 1998 through 2005. there is a tsb issued for this problem, but it is not warranty covered after the original 36000 mile warranty. per the tsb, the blend door assembly is poorly designed in that there is not range of travel stop on the actuator motor, causing the plastic shaft to absorb all the motor torque, eventually breaking the shaft. the problem is this is a design flaw which should be recalled. i had to spend 900 dollars to get mine fixed because the labor required to pull the dash. this problem exists over several model years of this vehicle per the tsb, and is fairly common. i feel the manufacturer should be required to recall these vehicles for repair. if the blend door breaks, there is cold air only, no heat, making winter driving potentially dangerous due to no defrost. *jb

Experienced issues with steering assembly consistent with nhtsa campaign id 01v007000 (steering box recall for 2001 jeep grand cherokee) and noticed the vehicle became less responsive to steering input and resulted in a near accident while entering a highway on-ramp on june 26, 2006 (the car would not turn when the wheel was turned). the car was taken to a dealer service station and the dealer recommended steering box replacement due to noticeable grinding in steering assembly. jeep claims the repair is not covered under warranty or the recall. the recall is effective for vehicles built between the dates of november 22 and december 5, 2000 only, my vehicle was built on december 6, 2000. jeep was unable to confirm that my vehicle was not made with defective parts. i am requesting nhtsa investigate jeep grand cherokee vehicles made after december 5, 2000 for steering box failure issues, the recall issued is not extensive enough resulting in potential safety issues. *jb

Window front mechanism left side and right side broke twice on 3 jeeps that i owned all 2001. window did not go up on 3 separate occasions had to change the mechanism. miles varied but all 3 where 2001 jeeps grand cherokee. last incident noted on date you are asking. *jb

My wife and i purchased a new 2001 chrysler grand cherokee and have had nothing but problems with our brakes, rotors and calipers. the warranty covered it for the first three years and the chrysler manufacturing paid for repairs up to now, but are now refusing to pay for future repairs. and it's due again, the brakes and rotors have been replaced every year. i believe this is a secret recall and i'm sure a technical service bulletin was issued to all the dealer repair shops and that angers me and i'm sure a lot of your complaints as well my wife and i are at our wit's end and don't know who to turn to. this to me, warrants a nation wide recall, does someone have to die before chrysler takes this complaint seriously or has it already happened and the people who investigated the accident wasn't aware of this dangerous defect, who knows? we refuse to trade it in or sell because we simply can't afford it at this time, it's paid for. any advice and/or guidance will be appreciated. thanks. *jb

Ac fan quit working on long trip home. took to dealer had to replace resistor, which they said they also had to replace with a new style wiring harness. cost 410.00 for parts and labor, with parts being more than labor. had to drive in extreme heat with windows down to get home, over 3 hours. *jb

Purchased '01 jeep new. driver side heated seat did not work from day one. heating element replaced at 1,400 miles by dealer. approximately 2004/60k ps heated seat stopped working. approximately 2005/90k while driving driver side heated seat became unbearably hot and smoking. pulled car over, turned off switch, have not turned on since for fear of car fire. *jb

Passenger side window stopped working and fell into door in 2005. driver side window has now done the same thing in 2006. first time it cost me over $300 to repair, i'm sure this second time it will be the same. obviously, there is a defective part here, since it has happened twice it is not just normal wear and tear. this problem is out there all over the internet - chrysler/jeep needs to recall and repair this issue. *nm

Left rear brake light dims and goes out at night when lights are on when i brake or while i am driving with lights on during the day when i brake. i have had the bulb looked at and changed 4 times now. each time i am assured the problem is fixed. i had it changed again 2 weeks ago and i am now experiencing the same problem. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated while driving at night the headlights would not turn off, the battery was disconnected so the headlight would go off. second, the car is not in park light illuminated on the overhead console while driving 45 mph. third, the antilock brakes vibrated while coming to a complete stop at a red light causing the vehicle to accelerate. the vehicle hit another vehicle from behind however no one was injured. a police report was filed at the scene. the vehicle sustained frontal damage and was driven home. the dealership inspected the vehicle but was unable to determine the problems. the manufacturer was alerted. updated 6/23/2006 - *nm

Dt*: the contact stated when the vehicle reached between 8,000 and 10,000 miles, the rotors begin to warp. the vehicle's rotors were previously warped 10,000 miles before the last occurrence. this primarily occurred while driving 40mph and above. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection. the dealer determined this was normal wear of the rotors; however, the dealer suggested resurfacing the rotors again.

2001 jeep grand cherokee laredo purchased new in april 2001. at 66,842 miles the overdrive snap ring broke into 3 pieces and wedged into the park pawl. when the vehicle was put into park, it would roll. the transmission had to be reworked with all new seals and gaskets and the damaged overdrive components had to be replaced. although i found documentation online that stated the transmission warranty had been extended to 70,000 miles, chrysler would not even listen to my complaint. their customer service rep actually hung up on me when i called. the total bill was $1,863.78. the dealership also found a defective governor pressure sensor which was replaced under warranty. this problem had occurred before. it caused the vehicle not to start because the governor sensor detected the vehicle was in gear when it was actually in park. i've also had constant problems with the brakes and rotors. have already spent about $1,000 on those and the repairs only last for about 10,000 to 20,000 miles. the front end shakes uncontrollably when braking above 35 mph which is very dangerous when meeting oncoming traffic. if you can't control the front end, it is very easy to crash right into an oncoming vehicle. i've spoken to several jeep owners and read many complaints online about the same problems i've had. i have engaged an attorney and we will be notifying chrysler of a lawsuit in the very near future. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated while parked in the driveway, the vehicle was placed in reverse and suddenly lurched backwards crashing into the garage. the contact attempted to apply brake pressure, but the vehicle was stopped by the garage and its contents. no one was injured, but there was moderate damage to the vehicle and garage. the police were not notified. the vehicle was not seen by a dealer.

Broken metal driver's power/heated seat frame under normal wear. same problem as in other people's complaints: the driver's seat frame broke in one corner and is no longer able to be bolted to the floor track. seat rocks and leans back. puts a lot of strain on other seat components. would be very dangerous in accident. dealer says would have to replace entire seat and track assembly for $1000+. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated the gear shift position indicator was placed in park with the engine running and the driver attempted to exit the vehicle. the transmission unexpectedly jumped into drive while the door was ajar, this resulted in the contact being thrown underneath the moving vehicle. after traveling over the contact's legs the vehicle continued forward motion until it rolled over a twenty foot embankment and was stopped by a tree. the contact sustained leg injuries. the vehicle was towed and later inspected by the insurance company who deemed it a total loss. additionally, it was discovered the gear shift position indicator was in drive.

I follow all the recommended schedules of maintenance by the manufacturer and keep our jeep is good working order. my wife was driving our car and the car began to overheat and pulled off the road. she noticed immediately that a orange fluid was leaking from the engine area. the car was towed to the nearest dealership and they advised that a fan assembly just "fell to pieces" and resulted in the shroud being damaged and consequently - the car coolant overheated as well. the dealership advised that the fan needed be replaced, the shroud needed to be replaced and a coolant flush service too. the total cost would be well over $700. *nm

I have had to replace both front window regulators on my 2001 grand cherokee laredo. i purchased this vehicle used with 45,000 miles on it. both times this has happened before going away on vacations. i have a warranty with the dealership and have had to pay $100 deductible each time. from reading this site, it seems like a known problem. don't know why there isn't a recall on these items. i have also had to replace two electronic modules in the transmission that the dealership told me never go bad. paid over $800 for these, which were not covered. *jb

Vehicle shakes when trying to break again. took in for service and told they had safety notice that the brakes and rotors were to be replaced. new mfg on the rotors, since they were having a problem. brakes and rotors replaced when 2 yrs in services with about 9k. 3 yrs later (29k per dealer) rotors need to be cut due to warping again. in 2003 was told when they changed the metal rotors, i should not have the problem again. now the vehicle is out of warranty and rotors are warped. *nm

1. window regulator faulty: 1st incident occurred 9/2003 at 40,000 mi; driver window fell down due to faulty window regulator. although warranty had expired, manufacture replaced, charged me $50 deductible. 2nd incident occurred 11/05 at 79,700 mi.; front passing window, it fell down due to faulty window regulator. dealer stated known problem, as did daimler chrysler, but told me i would have to file a complaint with nhtsa. was told that is what extended warranty is for. (they apparently do not back their product and are not quick to resolve known defects.) 2. 12/2004 transmission problems (clutch ring): car would not go in reverse; shifting rough. was told known problem and was told i was lucky that it wasn't the whole transmission. repairs approximately $600. 3. brake problems: warped rotors/calipers/pads replaced at 24,000. i am currently on 3rd set of brakes (just now have 80,000 mi on car). last set did not last a year. premature warping, squeaking brakes, rattling car, steering wheel, just like the other complaints listed at nhtsa. have had a few near accidents due to the shaking. replaced at my expense except for the 24,000 mi job. 4. emissions code on check engine light: due to faulty gas cap. dealer charged me $100 for the diagnostics, and almost 18 for a gas cap. i have never heard of such a think, and feel it is something the mfg should be responsible for since it is an environmental issue. again, was told i was lucky that it was only a gas cap?? why should i feel lucky when i spend $28,000 for a car that has known issues with the model and the mfg acts as if they didn't care, and tells me i should pay $2500 for an extended warranty. no, they should fix the known problems. we pay that much under the misconception that they stand by their product. as a result, i have problems with tires wearing out sooner than they should and front end alignment issues. *jb

Dt: contact took vehicle to a dealership to have yearly maintenance done. the dealership told him the tires were dry rotted. also, the chrome rims were corroded. the plating inside the rims was corroded. he contacted the dealership, they told him they would replace two of the wheels, but he would have to replace the other two at his expense.*ak updated 12/27/05. *jb

Dt: contact stated the front end shook violently. the steering wheel shook from left to right. the dealer told her the jeep had been brought to dealer at least three times prior to the contact's purchase of the vehicle for same problem, and they were unable to duplicate the problem. *ak updated 12/7/2005. several front end parts have been replaced but that has not alleviated the shaking problem. *nm

Windows fog up due to failure of hvac system. failure is caused by a defective part and is noted in jeep tsb (#24-001-04). jeep has redesigned the hvac housing. the failure of this part can cause the windows to quickly fog due to the failure of the system to blow air out of the defrost vents. our failure occurred while driving in the morning. the failed part is a mode door activator (part of the hvac housing). jeep knows that this part fails and has since redesigned the part. jeep is letting a known safety defect continue without a recall. most likely this is due to the high cost of component replacement. fortunately we did not have a traffic incident.*jb

I walked out of my house this morning and found that my rear passenger window had slid down leaving my 2001 jeep grand cherokee open. this is the 4th window that has done this (including one where my vehicle was parked in a public parking lot and the drivers window as i was approaching a stop light in a bad neighborhood). i filed a report when the third window dropped as well. i called chrysler both this time and last time and they weren't interested and suggested that if it's a problem then i should call you.

There are two problems with this model of jeep grand cherokee laredo. 1) the tail light socket in this model of jeeps constantly burns out. i have replaced this socket numerous times at $8.00 - $10.00 each and have kept all of the burned out sockets as evidence. when the socket burns out, the tail lights stop working once you turn the headlights on. my vehicle has automatic headlights and this truly causes a big problem. i've visited a jeep / chrysler junk yard in my area and checked each tail light socket. each socket is burned out like each of the sockets that i have in my possession. 2) the outside rail that connects the drivers seat to the risers breaks, converting the drivers seat to a rocking chair. i have spoken with the service and parts departments all of the jeep dealers in a 100 mile radius of zip code (20744) and was told that these issues are a common problem with jeeps from 1994 to 2004. i have also spoken with several friends as well as common strangers who i see with this same model jeep and have learned that they also have this problem and the below problems. i believe that this problems are a safety issue and warrant a safety recall. i have received two tickets on two separate occasions for the tail lights alone. i can understand having to change a light bulb every year or two but not the socket that the bulb plugs into. this is a serious defect that chrysler will not address. please help!*jb

My 2001 jeep grand cherokee had a defective transmission cable. this morning when i moved the truck from the driveway, i put it in park and proceeded to exit the vehicle. the vehicle continued to roll down the road. i quickly reacted and engaged the parking brake. i have two small children and my wife usually drives the truck. if this had happened while she was driving, the results could have been devastating. *jb

I had owned my 2001 jeep grand cherokee laredo, which i had bought new from brenner motors in mechanicsburg, pa, for almost 4 years when all of a sudden and without incident of any kind the driver's seat came undone on the one side. i believe this to be due to faulty and/or defective construction. i am the primary driver and am 6'2" and approximately 200 pounds. i brought this matter to the attention of the dealership while the vehiccle was still under warranty but was advised that this defect would not be covered under the warranty. another jeep dealer (henry gay in laurel, maryland) told me it would cost approximately $450 to fix including parts and labor. i beleive a defect of this kind endangers not only the driver but any back seat occupants as well.

My brakes were replaced at approx. 8,000 miles, 12,000, 18,000 and 25,000 i only drive the vehicle to work. the manufacture repaired it the times for free. i believe the vehicle should have come with a heavier braking system. i spent on 07/02/2005 about $450.00 to repair the bakes myself. i was told by the dealer that the next brake job i would have to replace all four rotors.

The event leading to the window regulator braking was use of the window. the regulator failed at 32,485 miles. the window would not stay up. the jeep dealer was able to repair the problem with new parts. i have found while looking through the nhtsa website that this is yet one more example of chrysler's poor quality components that i can look forward to replacing regularly just as i have had to replace the warped rotors every 12,000 to 15,000 miles. *jb

Steering wheel starts shaking violently while driving down the rode at 50-60mph. this happens at random with no warning, forcing you to pull off the road to avoid losing control. have taken vehicle in to try and determine the problem and this has not been determined. this is still occurring and have seen numerous reports on the internet about this problem. also one state is attempting to file a class action suit over this problem. i have contacted chrysler and they have documented my complaint about this problem. also they seems to be a problem with the electric windows in these vehicles, the rotor fails and the window will cannot be put up or it will go down by itself. have had 2 window rotors replaced within one week.

2001 jeep grand cherokee limited. had front brake rotors replaced twice due to warping and dc paid eventually as warranty or good faith by dc or dealer (last was due to new service bulletin); brake rotors still warping in service at 39,000 miles--dealer refaced rotors again (3rd time) and at my request replaced rear brake pads--not warranty work or good faith; i had to pay $400. dealer admits rotors still may only last 5,000 miles since dc jeep has poorly underdesigned the braking system. why won't dc jeep fix problem and reimburse for repairs to inferior equipment?

Debris accumulated in the #3 piston and caused engine failure. we had a 4.7l engine. this recall is for 4.0l but it also happens on the 4.7l. this particular model, the 2001 grand jeep cherokee. you can only replace the engine with the same model and year, making it expensive and hard to find.

Plastic bracket that holds metal wire end in place that supports a rolled up rear passenger door window snapped causing the window to fall into the door. the window regulator piece was replaced at a cost of $240.00. one week later, the front passenger door suffered the same fate. vehicle has 41,000 miles on it. plastic piece doesn't support the power or torque that the motor is putting on it.

Brake rotors warp approximately every 4,000-5,000 miles. the front brake rotors have been replaced 6 times under warranty and are ready for the 7th. the 1st time they were replaced, the calipers were replaced also under a tsb. back brake rotors have been replaced twice - once at my cost & once under warranty. dealer & manufacturer no longer wish to assist in remedying the problem. they seem to think they have replaced them enough times, even though the problem continues to occur. i've seen numerous complaints about this at this website. when is chrysler going to be held accountable for the design defect?

Consumer complained about a brake rotor problem. took vehicle back to the dealer on 3 separate occasions, and was informed that it was possible that the pads were different from the pads that were recommended for this vehicle, giving the driver a spongy effect when applying the brakes. consumer contacted the manufacturer, who was not trying to remedy this brake rotor problem. *ak

The o-rings in the fuel pump have apparently failed according to huffines jeep in plano, tx. they have told me that a technical service bulletin has been issued for the o-rings since 1999. i do not feel i should have to pay for the repairs of an obviously faulty part. my vehicle only has 65,000 miles on it.*ak

The rotors on my 2001 jeep grand cherokee warped at 12,000 miles. chrysler replaced the front brake pads, calipers, and rotors. the rotors warped again at 29,000 miles--only 17,000 miles later. during both failures, there was a noticeable pulsating, shaking sensation from the front end when braking at speeds of 30-35 mph and above. the key event leading up to the failure was use of the brakes--unfortunately the brakes are a very integral component of my jeep--as they are for the many other owners of 2001 jeep grand cherokees who are experiencing this very same failure over and over again. brakes that don't work or perform the way they are designed and intended to work are a huge safety issue. i implore you to issue a recall since chrysler will do nothing past the 12,000 mile point. chrysler must be forced to repair these vehicles with quality parts or someone is going to become another vehicle fatality statistic. *ak

1. my 2001 jeep gand cherokee was invovled in a front end wreck which totaled out the vehicle. . neither passenger or driver air bag deployed in this incident. the drivers head hit the steering wheel. the passenger was uninjured. *ak 3. the jeep was towed to hunter chrylser plymouth for an estimate. we were told it was a total loss due to extensive front end damage and the frame was bent. my question to hunter was why did the air bags not deploy? they responded that they don't always come out in a front end accident. it depends on what part of the bumper was hit. i can not understand this when the car was totaled and it was due total front end damage. i believe something in this car malfunctioned. do we have any recourse? we have photos, accident report, and estimate of total.

Rear left brake light failing, rear tail light is fading when hitting brakes and turns off at night when the lights are turned on as if it is shorting out. i have seen several other jeeps with the exact same problem. *ak

While driving on the highway driver engaged the cruise control at 60 mph. vehicle continued to accelerate. then, driver applied the brakes to disengage the cruise control, and vehicle continued to accelerate. driver hit the off button on the cruise control and vehicle failed to disengage. currently, vehicle was up to 80 mph and continued to accelerate. driver put the vehicle in neutral and the rpms went up to 6,000. vehicle continued to accelerate. driver put vehicle back in drive and applied the brakes and vehicle slowed down to 30 mph. that was when driver was able to put the vehicle back into neutral and turned vehicle off. when driver got out of the vehicle all 4 brake pads were on fire, and the rotors were glowing orange. *ak

While driving with the seat heater in use the heat burned completely through the heating element. *nm both leather seat heating elements shorted out and burned. the cloth wrapping leather seating was not damaged. the blower was inoperative. *sc *jb

The power widows fail due to a plastic part that holds the cable together. the replacement part costs $214.00 at the dealership only, and that is the whole mechanism, not just the part that breaks. i have had three of the four windows do this, and it would be nice if they could work something out so that i don't have to pay a lot of money to fix what appears to be a defective part. *jb

Shifting cable was replaced after failure. jeep was "slipping" in gear. i was run over by the vehicle after putting it in park and getting out. vehicle began "slipping" in gear again. i had no reverse. took it to the dealer and they said a lever was loose on the tranny and they tightened it. still slipping. *jb

Jeep has a defective part in the operator assembly of its power windows which causes the window to fall into the full open position. *ak

I have owned a jeep for 3 years. since i have purchased the jeep i have had nothing but problems. the rotors went bad, the steering manifold went bad, the engine went bad, and the motor in the window went bad and broke. now i have replaced my left rear brake light six or seven times. it slowly started to fade out, and now the entire light goes out at night when our lights are turned on and we have to depress the brake. it is also barely noticeable during the day. we thought we had a faulty wire, but when we took it to a shop to have them look at it, they said that in every jeep that has been brought in with the same problem has been the entire light and casing. the bulb gets too hot and warps the casing that holds the light. so the light no longer touches the casing and will no longer work. they told us also that our right rear light is warping also, so both of them need to be replaced. shouldn't this be a recall, since it is happening to so many jeeps. and shouldn't it be a recall since they have a rebuilt one knowing the old ones are no good? i don't like it , i don't like knowing my tail lights are getting so hot that it is melting the casing. could you please let me know about this! *jb

I left my vehicle parked to go shopping, but upon arrival back to the vehicle i saw that my passenger side front window was halfway down. upon further investigation i realized that what was wrong with my window had happened only 6 months earlier to the drivers side front window. the regulator or wire malfunctioned/snapped. i am having to pay to fix something that shouldn't just happen to both windows. *ak

The vehicle failed to accelerate. the engine revved up and the vehicle wouldn't accelerate beyond 2nd gear. the vehicle was towed to the dealership and the transmission was replaced because it had burned out. the failure recurred one month later, the vehicle stopped accelerating and felt like it was in neutral. the vehicle was towed to the dealership and the transmission was replaced again because of the same failure. *jb

Vehicle experienced vibration when applying the brakes while driving 35-55 mph. vehicle has been to the dealer on three separate occasions. dealer turned the front rotors on the first occasion, replaced the front rotors on the second occasion, and turned the front rotors on the third occasion. currently, the problem recurred with less then 11,500 miles.*ak the rotors kept warping. *tc

The lenses on the front headlights were cloudy. it appeared to have developed condensation which made visibility very difficult when driving after dark. the owner contacted the dealer who told the him it was not their problem. provide further details. *jb

Front brake rotor warpage. font rotors became so warped that causing pulsation in the steering wheel almost resulting in loss of control. i contacted chrysler dealership, and they said there was nothing wrong with them. there is a service bulletin where they replace the calipers, rotors etc under warrenty provisions. why was there a redesign of the brakes if there was not an design issue with them in the first place. and why are they covered under warrenty and not under a safety recall. if the brakes are involved is that not a "safety" issue. it is nice to be able to stop when needed. *ak

Pulsating and grabbing brakes when applied. to the point of possible steering loss at higher speeds. first failure at aprox 12000 miles dealer replaced all rotors and front calipers. stated brakes were under rated. aproximately 12000 miles later vehicles is still under warranty and has the same problem only more severe. i will be replacing the rotors with an aftermarket brand. (not the defective rotors used by chrysler). old rotors will be available for inspection. chrysler refuses to cover these defective parts under warranty. vehicle only has currently 28000 miles.*ak

The consumer owns two 2001 jeep grand cherokees. in both vehicle's the right rear axle seal broke causing differential fluid to leak into brake system. *bf each vehicle sustained $1000. in damage. the seal was fixed and the brakes were repaired in both cases. the consumer thinks a manufacturing defect is the cause of the problem. *nm

The suvs resistor-blower motor, which is part of the a/c, heater and blower system, failed. lithia jeep service representatives, who diagnosed and repaired the unit, indicated its placement is too close to a major heat source in the car; the excessive heat has caused the unit to fail early. the service rep indicated that while the unit failed before the third anniversary of the vehicle, which was new when purchased, the miles were beyond the warranty level. the representative further indicated that jeep has since redesigned the part and/or location, preventing the problem from occurring in later model vehicles. *ak

Driver's side power window failed operation. in the process of lowering the window i heard a series of grinding sounds and stopped the actions immediately. i then sought to raise the window, but nothing happened. the window is now in a fully open position and will not respond to any commands. *ak

While driving down the road driver side window started to go down and would not go back up. the front door window regulator had to be replaced, along with three retainer door trim panels. this cost $324. in view of the number of complaints for this problem, a recall seems to be in line for the jeep grand cherokee 2001 model.*ak

At 41000 miles just outside of the manufacturers warranty both the front passenger and drivers power window regulators failed. like many of the others shown here, there was a pop and the window simply slid down into the door. the plastic piece that the "up" end of the cable attaches to broke on both regulators. to make matters worse the design allows the slack cable to jam up in the grooves damaging both the spool and the cable. it almost seems as if it's designed to fail and completely destroy itself. a simple fix would be to install metal eyelts on the ends of the cables and use screws to attached them to the lifting plate in place of the soft plastic used. chrysler should be made to correct this for all vehicles that use this type of regulator. *jb

While driving,the driver noticed that the vehicle would vibrate uncontrollably without warning. the driver was able to drive it to the dealer for inspection. the mechanic informed the driver that the brake pads,and rotor needed to be replaced due to corrosion. consumer informed mechanic that this problem happened on more than one occasion.*ak

This is the third failure of the power window regulators. twice on the drivers window and once on the passenger window. the first incidence was covered under warranty at no cost. the other 2 were covered under extended warranty with copays. i understand that power windows fail but to have two on the drivers side go within an 18 month period is unacceptable. after reviewing other complaints this appears to be the norm versus the exception. there must be an obvious manufacturing defect which should be fixed at no cost to the consumer. service manager advises this is a common occurance because the drivers window gets used the most. i have owned other vehicles with zero defects of this nature.

The front driver side window all the sudden started to slip down into the door and would not go back up again. i replaced the power window assembly for the front driver side window 2 months ago costing me $330. now my front passenger window is doing the same thing. *ak

First noticed condition about month or so. vibrations when slowing down from above 50 mph speed. i thought maybe alignment problem. last week the vibration became very bad, the steering wheel vibrated as well as the front end of the car. hard to control the car. seemed there was pulling to the right also. (the car has 36000+ mi. it's a 2001 gc jeep. ) took the car to a goodyear dealer who said it was warped rotors. they made front brake disc pad replacement, resurfaced left & right front rotor as well as rear ones. the dealer mention this can happen on these vehicles when the rotors/brakes get wet. well, dah! what happens when it's raining and your running through puddles of water. how often is this going to happen with this vehicle? it is not covered by warranty which is specifically mentioned in the maintanence booklet. sounds to me to be a common problem with this vehicle. *ak

Concerning my out of warranty 2001 jeep grande cherokee, since july 2003, and as recently as yesterday, all 4 of the side power windows developed broken mechanisms causing the window to slide into the door. the driver side window had the same problem a second time so it looks like this process is starting again. total cost for these repairs are approximately $1,550.chrysler knows of these issues and will not recall or pay retroactively. would love to recover these costs for a very poorly designed suv.*ak

The front, passenger side window dropped off its track and into the door. this is the third window in my 2001 grand cherokee that has done this within the last 12 months. first the front driver side window, and then the rear driver side window did the same thing. all instances have occurred after warranty expiration and it costs $360 to replace the window regulator each time. email inquiries to chrysler after each occurance have yielded nothing more than an apology for my troubles. i think there is a defect with the window regulator, and expect the fourth window to break at any time.*ak

I bought my 2001 grand cherokee laredo 4x4 on aug. 20, 2001, in november 2002, with 8,000 miles on the vehicle i felt the steering wheel shake when braking at high speeds. the front rotors, calipers, and pads were shot. rockland auto plaza replaced them at no charge under the warranty. this past week, with 17,000 miles on the car, the front rotors were warped again. white plains chrysler replaced them at no charge but advised me that this type of wear was normal for an suv. obviously, from the complaints here, this is not normal but a problem that diamler chrysler needs to address. 3 pairs of rotors on a car with 17,000 miles, driven mostly on the highway, is un-excusable.*ak

I have a 2001 jeep grand cherokee laredo 6cyl. at approx 27,000 i experienced a vibration/pulsation when the brakes were applied. i took it into the dealer for diagnosis and was informed that the front pads were worn out and the rotors were out of round and needed turning. i had that work performed with dismay that every 27,000 miles that would need to be done. it is now 48,000 miles (21,000 later) and the same problem has occurred. according to jeep a revised brake caliper design has been built to correct the problem. as of this last changing (using the new rotors and calipers per tsb 05-003-02b) i will have spent $700 in less than 2 years on brakes that should not have worn out once inl 50,000. i was informed that this replacement was not covered under warranty, but being that it is premature failure of a poor design, i believe that it should be. *jb

The car is only three years old with factory installed alloy wheel and after two years i noticed the chrome starting to chip off on all four rims. i recently replaced all four tires and was told that the rims were in even worse shape than i had expected. for the length of time that this occured and the extra money paid for the option, i just don't feel that this is right. i am over on my warranty miles and feel as if there is no recourse.

One month ago my window regulator broke with no warning . i had it repaired for 360.00 dollars. today i get in my jeep and the drivers side window regulator is broken. i feel it has to be some defect in the regulator for both front doors to go bad a month apart.*ak

We have a 2001 jeep grand cherokee limited 4wd. above each passenger door there is a handle to hold on to. i don't know what it would be called but i use it to hang on when we go around a corner, etc. in june we were just leaving the cleaners. my husband was driving and i was in the passenger seat. i reached up for the handle as he was backing out. all of the sudden something hit my nose right under my eye. it really smarted and left a red welt. i asked him to re-park the car and we looked for what in the world had happened. we found a small piece of steel on the seat. we then looked over this safety handle and realized that the spring that holds the handle had broken and hit my face. i did not bleed and the red mark was gone in a couple of days. my concern is that it nearly hit my eye. when we ask the dealer to replace it we were told it would cost $79. was this a freak failure or has this happened to others? if i had been an inch shorter i could have lost an eye. we felt that the dealer would replace the part and were shocked that they wanted us to pay for it. we have not replaced it yet so the part is available. *la

I have a 2001 jeep grand cherokee limited. in march of this year, while on the expressway, my cruise control caused my vehicle to accelerate and would not turn off even by hitting the break and pushing the off button numerous times. i was only able to stop the vehicle by putting the gear in nuetral and turning it off. i contacted the dealership who talked my through how to loosen a cable in the engine which apparently caused the cruise/accelerator to stick. i immediately took the vehicle into the dealership and even on my way there, the car would accelerate on it's own, without the cruise control being turned on. the dealership kept my car for the day and when they returned, they stated that they had repaired the problem. two months later, i was leaving my parking space at work and my vehicle began to accelerate on it's own. i struck the break but the rear of the vehicle began to spin in circles and forced my vehicle to strike three other vehicle. jeep conducted an investigation and they sent me a letter stating that they could not find a problem with the vehicle. i just wanted to send you this complaint to let you know that their findings were false and poorly researched. i have pictures of the tire marks and there is no way that this accident could have occurred other than by i high acceleration and my foot being on the break.*ak

I bought my jeep new in july, 2001. within he 3 years of owning it, it is now in the dealership for its 5th time being serviced for brake failure. out of those 5 times, it is now having its 3rd set of rotors. i have spent an unacceptable amount of personal time and money in having this vehicle repaired and will be seeking resolution both from the manufacturer and michigan state lemon law if necessary. dealer states that manufacturer is aware of the problem and unwilling to pay for the repairs once outside of standard warranty. i feel the brakes are unsafe and the vehicle should be recalled.*ak

Rotors warped between 16000 - 18000 miles. dealer davis-moore replaced front rotors, calipers and pads. resurfaced rear rotors and replaced rear pads. no charge. rotors warped again at 34k miles. this time dealer charged me $170 to turn all four rotors. i complained about the longevity of the rotors and that the turning is not a permanant fix. there is a material or system problem with the brakes. please look into. mv .*ak

Dealer replaced at 10,000 miles the fronts rotors and pads. at 30,000 miles the front rotors/pads, and calipers were replaced. at 46,000 miles the front and rear rotors were resurfaced and the pads were replaced. *ak *nm

Have a recurring issue with my 2001 grand cherokee where violent shaking happens when the brakes are applied at higher speeds. the dealer replaced the calipers and rotors at 13,000 miles per a service bulletin from chrysler. i had same issue again at 19,000 miles, rotors were warped again. i am having same issue now at 26,000 miles and the dealer stated that although this is recurring issue known to them and chrysler, "i am on my own" and i would have to pay for the rotors again. i had no choice but to pay as this is the vehicle used to take my children to school and back and i do not want to risk an accident. i contacted the chrysler consumer center and they stated that brakes are only covered until 12,000 and unless a recall was issued, they would not assist me. i feel that it is not reasonable to have to have the rotors and calipers replaced or adjusted every few thousand miles and the violent shaking that occurs from this defect could cause a serious accident.*ak

I have had a recurring problem with brake rotors warping to which chrysler has not yet repaired the problem. the warping causes vibrations so severe it makes braking a serious problem, especially at high speed coming off of an interstate highway. *la

Disc brake rotor failure. vehicle has 33000 miles. severe shuddering at the front end occurs when braking at highway speeds due to front rotors having warped. severe enough to effect control of vehicle, especially if were to occur in emergency or bad weather situation. shudderring is not as severe at less than highway speeds. such warping of the rotors is not normal and from the number of other posts there is clearly a manufacturing defect occuring.

Brake rotors on my 2001 jeep grande cherokee have been replaced at 7,968 miles, 14,133 miles, 21,839 miles and the condition is recurring at 26,677 miles. information from the dealer indicates that this is a problem effective thousands of jeep owners nationwide and daimlerchryster is not cooperating and not taking responsibility for obviously defective equipment that is being replace with defective equipment. odi - nhtsa apparently has not launched a formal investigation, but certainly should. to force daimlerchrysler to address this problem and initiate a much needed recall.*ak

Transmission/powertrain/electrical components/brakes at just over 36,000 miles the powertrain/transmission module failed. there were three minor incidents where when i was accelerating normal into traffic the transmission roared and spun, but the vehicle would not move, i shifted into neutral after letting up on the gas, then shifted back into drive and the transmission "kicked in". the fourth time this occurred, however, was when i was accelerating to merge onto the freeway, the vehicle lost power and i had to coast over to the shoulder of the highway onramp and the vehicle was towed to the dealership. a sensor or transmission control module was replaced at a cost in excess of $500 (just out of warranty) to me. at 50,000 miles while driving along the road, i heard a loud bang and thought i had a blowout of a tire. it was not the tire however, it was the passenger side power window. something inside the door popped and the window fell down in the door. another bill in excell of $500. now at 63,001 miles, the transmission once again just would not go into gear. as i tried to accelerate off my street, the engine whined as though i were in neutral but it would not kick in. it would only go in reverse, none of the forward gears would make the car go forward. it was towed to our mechanic who says the entire transmission must now be replaced.*ak

After having rotors resurfaced three times and having them replaced once, the rotors have once again warped to the point of causing violent shaking of the steering wheel when the brakes are applied. this has become a serious problem and people are going to get hurt if a safety recall is not done. chrysler seem to believe it is the comsumers problem and they do not want to work with the comsumers on a solution. for $35,000 you expect to at least have working brakes.*ak

This has been happening since the beginning of purchase. when i'm stopped and beginning a turn with the steering wheel, the wheel will make a grind and/or squeaking noise. i've notified the dealership when i've taken it in for repair, but apparantly, it never happens when it's there at the shop. the first time i reported it, they oiled the steering column, that was all, and; the noise continued.*ak

When brakes are applied they pulsate and a high rate of speed cause the steering wheel and vehicle to shake violently. the brakes have been checked and are fine but each time i have to get the rotators turned and the problem seems to resolve for several thousand miles but eventually it returns. i have had the rotators turned 3 times now and the problem has reappeared again with the only alternative now is to have the rotors replaced. even after rotators are replaced i have been told by mechanic's that the problem will still occur due to the braking system creating too much heat and eventually wharping the rotators again. *ak

Have experienced pulsation/vibration during braking since owning my 2001 jeep grand cherokee. the pulsation/vibration is moderate to severe, depending on braking speed. dealer resurfaced the front brake rotors at 13241 and 23328 miles, and, applied tsb 0500302 at 35470 miles. vehicle now has approximately 45000 miles, and, pulsation/vibration is now ocurring again. i have written daimler chrysler concerning this ongoing problem, and, am currently awaiting their reply. this problem is not just an annoyance. brake pulsation due to brake rotors having excessive run out (warped rotors) is a saftey issue. operating a vehicle that has brake rotors with excessive run out will cause one or all of the following problems: a. excessive heat in rotors, resulting in additional rotor warpage and possibly rotor failure, and, ineffective braking; b. excessive heat in calipers, resulting in caliper failure, and, possible brake failure; c. excessive heat in brake fluid, resulting in ineffective braking. i could continue to have the dealer resurface the front rotors on this vehicle (at a cost to me of $110.00 per visit) until the rotors cannot be resurfaced anymore, and then purchase new rotors, only to begin the process of resurfacing the rotors every 10000 miles. doing so is not a solution to the problem, this is just treating the symptom of a serious design flaw and safety issue. again, i cannot stress enough, this problem is not just an annoyance, it is a safety issue that could have drastic consequences if not resolved. please help with the resolution of this problem. thank you. *ak

The driver's side seat foundation broke and came of the track. this caused the seat to start reclining backwards. this occurred because a weld on the seat had fracture. the consumer feels the seat would have separated from the structure in the event of an accident. *nm

2001 jeep grand cherokee was placed in "park" with engine on and left vacant while owner walked to nearby housing complex mailboxe. the vehicle slipped out of gear, into reverse, and struck the owner and the building before owner re-entered vehicle and regained control. the owner suffered a significant scratch, about seven inches long, on waist and scratches and bruising on thigh, now swollen and causing a limp. vehicle's tailgate is smashed in, bumper scraped and rear wiper bent. *jb

I was involved in a collision in which i rear ended another vehicle. i was travelling at approximately 40-45 mph. upon impact with the other vehicle neither my seatbelt functioned nor the drivers side airbag deployed. this caused injury to my chest when it hit the stearing wheel.*ak

Rotors on vehicle have warped on three different occasions. the first time was at about 20k miles at which point the rotors were turned. the second was at about 40k miles at which point the dealer performed a tsb and replaced the calipers with a new design to supposedly fix the problem and turned the rotors and put new pads on. the rotors are now warped again despite having the new calipers that were supposed to remedy the problem. i have been driving with warped rotors for over 20k miles now due to the fact that the dealer has no cure and new rotors will just warp again after a few months of driving. *jb

Consumer noticed while traveling heat was blowing without any indication that heat changed into cold air. dealership was contacted, and stated part was on two week back order. *ak

While driving at 30 mph, another vehicle skidded in the direction of the consumer's vehicle, when the consumer tried to avoid an collision, the consumer lost control of the vehicle and slid into a pole. upon impact, the driver and rear seats failed without warning. as a result, all three occupants sustained back injuries. *ak *jb

Our vehicle is equipped with the gen 3 seat belts. it has been brought to my attention that these safety belts are faulty and are unsafe. please contact chrysler to have these seat belts recalled and replaced. it is a matter of life and death. *cb

While driving driver heard a shutter in the front end. took vehicle to the dealer, and dealer replaced and machined the calipers. *ak *mr

When stopped, with the transmission in drive, the car would jump forward without ever touching the accelerator. the only way to prevent the car from lurching forward was to increase pressure on the brake pedal, but the lurch was still felt. i have heard this termed a "bump stop" by others that have had it happen to them.*ak

The steering wheel malfunctioned upon making a left turn. as a result, steering became difficult. steering gear assembly recall 01v007000 was issued; however, this vehicle was not included due to vin. *ak *scc

Car shaking when applying brakes to the point you cant control it. *la

I have a 2001 jeep grand ch. laredo, which i am the original owner. the brakes acted different that my previous vehical, but i assumed it was the 4 wheel abs. it kept getting worse to the point of almost losing control on hard braking. i went to york motors in prescott to see if there was a brake recall. i was told no and my problem was warped front rotors with out them even looking at the vehical. i went to brake masters and was told that the rotors had to be turn on the vehical because the backing plate it self was warped. $149.00 later the braking is great. i talk to other jeep owners same problem. i believe this is wide spread and should be investigated.*ak

Consumer complained about an engine problem. while driving on the freeway at approximately 70 mph vehicle abruptly lost power. also,transmission failed when vehicle had only 30,000 miles on it. *ak crankshaft broke at 60,000 miles. *la

We have had our grand cherokee since december, 2000 and have had to have the front brake rotors serviced five times in the first 29,000 miles of use. daimler chrysler contends that my wife's driving habits are the cause of the problems yet there are several service bulletins logged at the nhtsa site for this problem. jeep's attempt to blame an obvious product defect on the driving habits of their customer is unethical and should be reported.

Habitually warping brake rotors. i have now had the rotors/pads/calipers replaced at 8000 miles and, most recently, at 35,000 miles. on what other car would you expect to be out of pocket the cost of replacing pads and rotors every 8,000-17,000 miles? i will not be buying another jeep and i only hope that this serves as a cautionary tale to potential purchasers. *nlm

Consumer complained about electrical problems. air conditioner regulator and fan stopped working. also, consumer had to replace both driver's side and passenger's side window switch regulator.*ak

Shift interlock cable became disconnected, enabiling the shfit lever to be moved from the park position without depressing brake pedal. also the key can be removed from vehicle without selecting park with the shift lever. *ak

Driver side window feel and would not go up. 23208 miles on truck and the dealer replaced regulator, in accordance with service order. one year later same thing happen to the other side with 32240 miles on the truck. of course this one is out of pocket expence. this is without a doubt manufacture defect and needs to be corrected by the manufacture of the truck and not the consumer. i have also had front brake rotors changed by the dealer twice until i purchased after market pads and rotors to fix the brakes myself. no problem with brakes for two years now.*ak

Brake failure. *ak

When the brake pedal was applied, the steering wheel vibrated and the brake pedal pulsated. this was caused by premature brake wear. this occurred at 7000 miles. the dealership replaced the brake pad and turned the rotors. the brakes wore again at 12,400 miles. the dealership replaced the pads with a special type of pad and turned the rotors. the problem recurred at 26,000 miles. *jb

The consumer had the vehicle in the shop almost 10 times for repairs. the consumer argued that the power steering was out of order and she was unable to steer the vehicle in reverse. the vehicle had experienced other problems such as the drive pinion, heating pads, brake rotors, calipers, pads, power steering pump, the rear shock absorbers and rear sway bar links. the dealer was contacted about the problems no help was offered. it had appeared that there had been a recall issued for the grand cherokees built only from nov 22- dec 5 2000 for the power steering and the consumer missed it by a month, but the vehicle experienced the same problem as the recall that was issued. the consumer was very dissatisfied with the dealership. *ak *cb the vehicle also experienced three tire blowouts. the consumer was told the problem was caused by the gear box, there was a recall regarding the issue, however the consumers vehicle was not included in the recall. the front pinion seal leaked. *jb

Rotors warped at 12,000 miles and 22,000 miles with the dealer telling me i drive the car too hard.*ak

Loud grinding sound comming from the front axle. *ak

Vehicle vibrated and steering wheel shimmied when stopping. front brake rotors warped with about 18,000 miles. replaced and stopped. at 27,000 miles it's back. *la

Harsh down shifting, results in loud clunking, rear tire squalling, and passenger discomfort. rough shifting into gears while parked. moaning brakes, warped rotors fuel pump deficiancies, and miscellaneuos electrical problems.

Without any indication driver's window fell inside the door. passenger's side failed the same way. vehicle had been serviced, and motor was replaced.*ak

While applying brakes vehiclem shutters violently. it is hard to control vehicle. *ak

The drivers side seat heater stopped working 6 months after i purchased the new vehicle. it took 7 months to get it replaced. wrong parts were ordered, then parts were back ordered, phone calls were not returned or ignored, and i had to bring my car in numerous time, missing work frequently. after changing dealerships for my warranty work, i finally got it replaced. however, i was concerned about the passenger seat heater failing in the future. i was told by the first dealer (i purchased the vehicle through) that they would replace both. however, when i went to the second dealer, they told me that "it is unlikely that the passenger heater would fail because you do not use it as often". well, here it is 2 years later and my passenger heater is now not working...4000 miles after my warranty expired. quite convenient, i might add. this time it took two visits to the dealer and a un-returned phone call over 2 weeks to even find out a price for me. and of course, the date of delivery of the part is unknown. 2/3 winter seasons without a seat heater in my car is unacceptable. *la

Vehicle experienced excessive vibration when brakes are applied. *mr the vehicle had become unstable when braking while on the highway. slight moderate braking caused the excessive shaking of the steering wheel and intensive vibration on the brake pedal to the point of a lost of control. tsb# 0500501 was performed. the consumer was told he was hard on the brakes. the problem recurred at 21k miles going at a speed of 55 mph. *scc *jb

When accelerating from a stopped position, vehicle feels sluggish, as though it is starting from second or third gear. when stopping, a loud clunking noise is heard. rough and erratic shifting is felt as the transmission downshifts. with a vehicle with less than 27,000 miles on it, the transmission does not seem to be working normally (at least as normal as any other automatic transmissions i have had over the years). i have read several other complaints posted that express similar problems, but have not seen any resolution from jeep other than telling their customers that this is normal operation. this troubles me and does not give me much confidence in their ability to troubleshoot the problem. i want a record of the problem for future reference. *la

First the front passenger side window went out and would not roll up, they replaced the window relay, then not even a month later the driver side window did the same thing. after my dad took it apart the relay he found that was not the motor at all but the bosch gear & cable were defective, and probably from the beginning because the very start of the cable was totally pinched and caused the whole cable to get bond. *la

While driving at 60 mph the consumer heard a loud bang and saw black smoke coming from the engine compartment. the consumer blindly pulled over to the shoulder and called the fire department. the front end was consumed by the fire, but no injuries were reported. *ak *scc *jb
