2001 CHRYSLER PT Cruiser

The engine cradle on my 2001 PT Cruiser is rusted out. I brought it to the dealer, they told me yes it is bad and needs to be replaced but Chrysler refuses to fix it. They have fixed others before but reused to fix mine. I think it is their responsibility to fix this becaus eit is a saftey issue

Bad vinegar toxic smell when air conditioner is first turned on. There is no cabin filter on the 2001 model. Bacteria growth on cooling fan.

Car heats up when idling. I purchased the car used in 2006 and every year this problem occurs. Both fans, radiator, thermostat, distributor cap, everything to do with problem has been replaced at least once one. My radiator has been flushed out several times just in the hopes it would help it not over heat.

My car was taken in to licensed Chrysler Dealership within the federal emissions warranty 8/80,000 for the PCM failure code 601. The dealership declined fixing it under warranty and wanted to charge me $800. It wasn’t until I did research that I found out about warranty and dealership again declined to honor warranty only because time had passed. I’m going through the complaint process need your HELP!!!

1. Battery cells went dry and needed new battery; 2. Water pump “guide” broke and allowed timing belt to wear a groove in the oil pump, which caused gallons of oil to leak over the course of a month. Chrysler no longer makes the oil pump, so I am not able to repair it. I am told I need to buy a whole new engine. 3. The interior lights periodically have stayed on after starting the car. The only way to turn them off is to move the control all the way to off, which in turns darkens the dash and when you’re driving at night, makes in nearly impossible to see your gauges. 5. Refers to the #2. The oil pump and water pump need replacing. My mechanic is estimating the 1200 fee. 5. The drive window would periodically not go all the way up. The mechanic from whom I bought the car says he greased it and that fixed it. Also, the driver seat no longer is adjustable.

WIRING HARNESS OUTER SHELL CRACKED & INTERNAL WIRING BROKEN DUE, IN MY OPINION, TO POOR LOW QUALITY WIRE CABLES.

White image at each end of rear bumper appeared. Service writer said it is a defect. But since it appeared outside of one year it is not honored. I also purchased five year service contract, but they to said not warrantable.

While DRIVING , steering quit, managed to get it to a nearby garage. The entire power steering mechanism had broken free, It is not bolted down but welded down, part had to be ordered from dealer . The mechanic had great difficulty getting inside to repair part. The mechanic said he had also never seen this happen before and had me check for recalls . None yet. Had this happened on the thruway, it would have been deadly.

We have repeatedly replaced the thermastat on this vehicle as it continues to overheat. This has happened several times including once in the parking lot at the dealership.We have had to have it towed, but cannot get them to do anything other than replace ther thermastat.

Vehicle has an INTERMITTENT overheating problem which the manufacturer dealers don’t have an answer for. Therefore they just keep trying to fix things that might be the cause of the problem. Finally, after two attempts at this, the continued overheating caused major engine damage, resulting in a high cost engine repair. This repair only fixed the damage caused by the problem and did not address what actually caused the problem in the first place. MANY, MANY other PT cruiser owners are experiencing the same problems, and can’t find an answer to them either. I am afraid to drive the car now, until the cause of the overheating is discovered and corrected.

TIMING BELT BROKE AT 75557 WHILE GOING 40 MPH ON HWY. ENGINE WAS RUINED.

This 2001 PT Crusiers is burinig excessive oil which is a quart every 180-200 miles. This could lead to engine failure. Crysler says its \"normal\" to burn 1 qt. every 1,000 miles. This vehicle does not show the oil leaking on the ground, coming out of the tail pipe or having the engine soaked in oil. It clearly does not look at all like it burns oil.

The problem is high oil consumption of about a quart every 1000 miles. I understand this has become a very common problem leading to potential engine failure. According to the site ptcruiserproblems.com, Chrysler is aware of the issue but is claiming this amount of oil usage is “normal”. No other manufacturer they contacted said this was normal for any engine. Nor have I ever heard anything like this in owning vehicles for over 30 years. It just sounds ridiculous to me and a cover-up for the problem. I’d like to be included in any class-action lawsuits or other actions against Chrysler to remedy this problem. Thanks,Bill Gamache

The Car began overheating in normal driving conditions too and from work about 14 miles either way. Took to dealership where they replaced the radiator cap and thermostat and they sent me on my way. The next day car was overheating again they had it for two days this time trying to find problem and decided on the condenser fan.Picked up car on Friday Aug 17. On Saturday Morning Aug 18th 2007 picking my son up from work, car overheated again and no service dept on Saturday. My problem is still not resolved as of this post. I have done research on the web and this is a very common problem with 2001 PT Cruisers and Chrysler should help.

REPLACING STEERING WHEEL RACK, WHICH REPAIRMAN SAYS IS A RARE OCCURANCE.

PT has used 1 quart of oil every 3,000 miles since the day it was new. Vehicle now has 70,000 miles. Dealer states the usage is “Within Specs”. No brand new car should use oil at this rate. No leaks, drips, never been in any kind of accident.

PT Cruiser overheated. Had fan replaced, because it was not working. Mechanic said sensor was fine, as well as fuses. Had to replace fan unit. PT Cruiser has overheated twice, since then and the last time it shut down and would not start back up.

OIL CONSUMPTION PROBLEMS

My wife was driving in a residential neighborhood and smoke started pouring out from under the steering column. The car was taken to the local Chrysler dealer and was diagnosed with a failed fog light switch.The switch failure caused the connector that plugs into the back of the \"multi-function switch\" to burn up.There was no fuse to protect the wiring harness and the wires seem to be not sized to handle the current.Chrysler\’s fix was to have us purchase an entire wire harness #4671456AF for $2450.00 where they clipped the little connector off and spliced it on to the existing harness. Not only is this a safety issue because all of the controlls on the steering wheel pass through this connector that melted down upon the switch failure, filling the car with acrid smoke but we were taken for $3162.36. I also see it as a design failure on two points: 1)If a system \"shorts\" there should be fused protection.2)The wires are sized incorrectly. The Service Writer said and is quoted on the invoice in writing, \"Connector at harness to multi-function switch burned and melted from lights staying on.\" If the harness connector can burn from the lights staying on, what happens if we take a cross country drive with the lights on? Only answer from their Dx is another meltdown of the harness which could mean loss of lights, and or control, heaven for bid at night.

My Cruiser began overheating in 2006. Took it to a Chrysler dealer and they informed me the warrenty was expired ( of course) so had to take it to a mechanic to fix problem as dealer was too expensive. Not even a year later the problem has started once again. Overheating, steam rolling out from under the hood, stalling as I slow down or come to a stop. It seems I am not the only one with this problem. Something has to be done.

In Nov 2003, the steering wheel locked and could not start the car-38913 miles. It was towed to the dealership and they could not repeat the problem. Feb 2004, the steering column started clicking when turning at 41719 miles. I took it in and a bearing went bad they had to replace the steering column. In Aug 2004, I went on a 250 mile trip when I pulled into my subdivision the front pump on the transmission went out at 47066 miles. Had it towed to a local garage due to a dealer mechanic strike. The transmission has to be replaced. The tow different dealers did not tell me about a fuel system recall that was issued in 8/02.

I was driving on the interstate at 60 mph. The car shifted out of gear twice, the transmission light came on. It was Sunday, there was little traffic, yet I was barely able to pull over before the transmission completely locked up. The car came to a stop in the driveway of a convenience store. The dealer looked at the fluid on the dipstick and said the transmission was not able to be repaired. The car was not under warranty since the 2001 models only have a 36,000 mile warranty. After much negotiation with the dealer, the service department manager offered to let us pay $1,200 for a remanufactured transmission with a 12,000 mile warranty. We had the transmission serviced in January. There were no problems noted. Two weeks prior to the transmission failure, my wife had taken the car in because it was making noises in idle. The dealer said it was water getting on a belt. We still wonder if it was not a warning there was a transmission problem. We have moved the car to a transmission shop, because we have lost faith in the service department due to some discrepancies between what the service writer and service manager represented to us. The shop told us the transmission was completely destroyed, that he is not really sure what happened, but he thinks maybe the torque converter sheared off and destroyed everything. Interestingly, it is not possible to buy a Chrysler torque converter right now because they are on national back-order.

I recently purchased a used PT Cruiser. After watching another PT Cruiser catch on fire in my parking lot at work, I started noticing that I had no heat. I added coolant, and it promptly overheated the first time that I drove it for more than 20 minutes. Since then I have inspected my system for leaks and have found none, so I turned to the internet to help troubleshoot the problem. I found that numerous people have encounter the same problem with their PT Cruiser, with no solution to the problem and no help from Chrysler about the issue.

I purchased this PT Cruiser used roughly 5 months ago. I have found that it uses approximately 1 quart of oil every 500 miles. The are no oil leaks I can find and there is no evidence of oil burning (no blue smoke from the tail pipe). Compression check shows cylinders with roughly equal pressures. I love the car otherwise, but have been unable to find anyone who has a solution to the problem.

I need help! In November 2003, I went to NW Dodge in Houston with cash in hand to buy a GOOD used 2001 PT Cruiser. I called before I went and spoke with a salesman by the name of Roger. Upon arrival for a test drive, Roger turned me over to another salesman by the name of Carlos. I went to test drive it and at first start up this car would not start. Carlos told me that someone must have left its lights on and drained the battery. I understood. They charged it up, and off my daughter, my nephew and I went. It drove nice, but the stereo did not work nor did the cruise control and the airbag light was on. Carlos told me they would fix all of that and things would be OK. I asked Carlos what the story was on the car and he said it was a one owner car and traded in for a new one. I figured OK. I then asked Roger why there were 2 colors on the front and back bumpers, as if someone wrapped tape around the bumpers and if the car had been painted. He said NO, that there were some 2001’s that came from the factory like that. OK again, I thought. When I decided to buy this car at their advertised price of $10,995, Carlos took the paperwork to the Sales Manager, Don Butler, and upon return, the paperwork had $11,995. I got my kids, stood up, and walked out and said nothing. They stopped me in the parking lot and apologized and asked me what they could do to make me happy as it was a mistake. I just stood there in anger, so they threw in a Kenwood 10 disc CD changer, free oil changes for 3 years, and took some off the price. I went back in. I signed the paperwork along with an “AS-IS” and bought an extended warranty and left – happy – so I thought.Well, in Demcember 2003, my family and I went to San Antonio for a first time ever, and while u-turning under a freeway, on New Year’s Eve, the car’s front end locked up and we could not turn and almost hit a pillar! I was angry. On New Year’s Eve, for fear we would be stuck in San Antonio for Lord knows how long, we drove back at 12 midnite with emergency lights on all the way back to Tomball. I called the GM of that dealership, Jeremy Brown, and told him I DID NOT WANT THAT CAR and wanted to be traded out! He said NO. See, my credit is not that great, and I am a single mom, and I was fortunate enough to get financing where I can walk in a dealership and pay cash for the car. I did at this dealership. So they got my money!Here we are barely over two years later, and with all these new items on my car:Engine mountsOil leaks on engine fixed3 stereos total replaced3 clock springs replacedair bags replacedtramsmission line replaced due to a leakcruise controlpower steering pumptransmission computer control modulePower steering switch replacedthe entire FRONT END replaced (struts, boom arms, etc.)(these are just off the top of my head of course because there are MANY more items I am sure)But the one that KILLED me was . . .THE TRANSMISSION OVERHAULED 2 WEEKS AGO (at 70,000 miles) -and YES I did all my required maintenance! After I took my car from the shop, a few days later, to top it off, it overheated.Needless to say, I have called, written, cried, yelled, even prayed for them to take this car back and give me my money, they refuse. I have written the BBB and complained, but while I wait, this car goes in the shop and takes all my money! Even when I drive it, I smell gas fumes IN THE CABIN, but the shop can’t find the cause of this problem. I now take it to River Oaks Chysler because they try to help me. I have written NW Dodge telling them that an attorney I spoke with told me that they did a deceptive trade practice by selling me this car as they did and gave them 10 days to refund all my money. Nothing. The BBB received a letter from them stating that when my attorney contacts them they will respond. I DO NOT HAVE an attorney because if an attorney intervenes, he will take 40% of my money and I will stuck out more and I can’t afford one. I just want this resolve because this is a stressful nightmare and hard on my finances! I am behind in my home because of repair after repair and fighting to keep that!However, it was in February 2006, when I discovered thanks to Car Fax that is car was NOT a one owner car traded in for a new one, it was owned by THRIFTY CAR RENTAL and NW Dodge bought it at an auction! I also have 3 body shop mechanics that attest this car WAS PAINTED and that is why the discoloration is on the bumpers!I brought this to the attention of the GM, and all he said was, we buy cars like this all the time. WHAT?! Then why did the saleman Carlos and Roger LIE TO ME? If I had known it was a used rental I would have NEVER bought the car! His response was so meaningless, I don’t even remember what he said, but the end result is I am screwed with a jalopy. I have copies of letters and faxes I have sent.I have also discovered that in California there is a class action lawsuit against Chysler because they allowed dealerships to sell “used rental cars” and NOT tell customers they were used rental cars and also selling them overpriced or at regular market value as a one owner car KNOWING sued rental cars are worth much less because they are USED RENTAL CARS! I paid $10,700 FOR THIS CAR in 2001!I don’t know whether to write a certified letter to the GM regarding this matter. It is NOT fair, even if I signed an AS-IS, I know used cars bring problems sometimes, but I was not expecting to rebuild one either or to have such an unsafe car. My daughter does not even want to ride in this car out of fear. We are miserable. THEY KNEW IT WAS A USED RENTAL AND NOT WORTH WHAT THEY SOLD IT TO ME FOR AND TOOK ADVANTAGE OF ME BECAUSE I AM A WOMAN/SINGLE MOM and I will be damned if this stays quiet! In fact, when I was there, they sold another PT Cruiser that had marks on the car, it was night time, and the car was dark and I showed Carlos and he said IN FRONT OF MY WITNESSES, ssshhhh, DON’T SAY NOTHING, IT’S SOLD! OMG! I was so blind, but I trusted NW Dodge and will never do so again IN LIFE! I just wanted a good used car, not one that I have to pay $100 everytime it goes in the shop and breaks my pocket. It is NOT fair and something needs to be done and I bet if you dig, you will see they sold “other used rentals” and rip-off prices too. PLEASE SAY YOU CAN HELP!

I bought my pt 2002 in Jan. 07 it began to overheat in Aug. Mech could not figure out why. I had vin # ran by another dealer and was told that the car had been totaled out by the previous owner. Dealer I bought it from did not disclose this to me, and said nothing could be done about it. The totaling out made all manufacters warrenties void. In dec 07 front end began to shake tie rods needed to be replaced, getting ready to have them fixed and it overheated and stopped running. I was told head gaskets need to be replaced. I have owned this car 11 months and have more problems then I care to count. Dealer will do nothing.

I am pretty sure we have had problems with these, maybe more. I am reporting this for my boyfriend. He bought the car here in Cynthiana at a chrysler Dealer. They are awful here, they never informed us of any of the reported recalls. I don’t know how to go about getting any of these problems inspected that were recalled. Please help me get these inspected if there are any recalls out there on this make and model/year. Thanks, Melissa and Glenn

chrome on wheels ‘peeling’ off

First the cooling system clogged and had to be r&i’ed, flushed, & refilled. A week later it clogged later and had to be flushed, refilled, & Thermostate replaced. Upper & Lower radiator hoses & Heater hoses replaced. A few weeks later the water pump went out. Then Just a few days ago the head gasket blew. The car had been in for two services by the dealer and they put the wrong coolant in the radiator. Did not check the batt. T It was COVERED with corrsion. The Cam shaft posission sensor connection was eaten through by batt. acid. When the head was tooken apart, found out that the head bolts were VERY loose. Also the car has been in a major accedent and the owner was not informed of that. The entire car was repainted and that was done wrong. the clear coat is delaming. The stock tires after 40,000 miles started releasing the tread from the rest of the tire. Its been nothin but a money and time pit. causing the owner and myself lots of stress. ENGINE STOPS DEAD IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING…DEALER HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO REPEAT PROBLEM BUT 4 WARNINGS COME UP ON COMPUTER

engine broke, was told needed a new one. WHY at such a low mileage would this happen? Have waited 3 weeks since engine broke to get an answer from dealer and corporation which NO satisfaction. WHY would a car, well maintained and completed every required schedule maintenance, need a new transmission, then 3 days later a new clutch, and now a new engine becuase the piston and crank shaft broke??? why would this happen? I can not afford a new engine.. I don’t know anyone with a car that young that has required so many major repairs. what is wrong with chrysler? and they have been impossible to deal with, passint the buck, refusing to allow me to speak to any supervisore, accusing me of recording the phone conversation, threatening to close the case, which they just did… stating that the sales manager is a liar, and then the sales manager stating that corporate is lying…. what kind of treatment of people is this???

Despite having my car maintained meticulously from the moment I bought it new,I have had the following problems with my PT Cruiser:-Tires- five new tire in the first year.-Rims-two new.–Brakes-two brake jobs within the pr000 miles.-Battery problems, a new battery and leads.-Door locks, the trunk door lock has never worked properly.

December 2009- 127000; having difficulty with 2001 PT Cruiser overheating

Coolant fan continue to quiet working after changing out fan, the PT starts to heat up while idle. Fan will work for a short period.

Check oil light came on without prior warning. 10 secondslater engine sounded like a machine gun. Had engine check out with two mechanics. Same dianosis no oil. These dianoses were confusing to me since oil was change regularly between three and four months intervals. Where did the oil go.

Check oil light came on without any prior warning on the freeway, started dinging loudly. Car started making machine-gun noise and smoking. Dealer says engine failed due to no oil and they will not cover it under my extended warranty even though the car had been at the dealers for repair three weeks prior for fog lights not turning off and killing the battery.

Car is reluctant to change gears. First major event one could not go from neutral to first gear. Then eventually after shutting off engine it accepted 1st gear and reluctantly others. Dealer replaced clutch return spring which appeared to solve prolem for a while. Condition returned and worsened to the extent that it would not go into gear at all Managed to get it into 3rd gear and get to dealer. They determined that the clutch master cylinder was leaking, performed diagnostics and replaced master cylinder. The shift has been getting increasingly rough as though it was lubricated with sand. Problem has returned with a vengence. Will attempt to got to dealer on Monday.

At unpredictable intervals, it is impossible to shift into reverse.

WATER PUMP REPLACED also it eats oil and coolant, service guy says it needs a new head gasket but only has 50K miles

took the car in for overheating, chrysler dealer changed the computer, radiator and thermostat and still the car left me on the road heading to an important meeting. overheating again, i took the car after i just picked it up yesterday morning and by 12 noon i was back in the shop and they could not find nothing wrong, so i left today and this happen all over again. overheating.

Power steering just failed today, 06/11/2010 Wheel/Axle refers to control arm bushings. Left control arm was replaced August 2008, right was replaced January 2010. The car is now, once again, making the tell tale sounds of control arm bushings going bad again. The fix is over $800 for EACH control arm, since the bushings alone can not be replaced, a whole new control arm is needed. I’ve read that this is a known problem, that Chrysler simply refuses to remedy. Additionally, the alloy rims deteriorate quickly in Northeast climates, where ice melt is used in the winter. Our tires need constant attention to be sure that they are inflated properly. The wheel deterioration cuases air to leak at accelerated pace. The rear window wiper is useless, rusted, and doesn’t even clean the window. We’ve owned this car for nearly 4 years and have probably put more into it in repairs than we have in payments. When the A?C is turned on, we can smell rubber burning, and occasionally hear a belt slipping or rubbing. We’ve had to constantly add power steering fluid. For the past 3 years, during inspections, we’ve asked the mechanics (once at Pep Boys, once at a Chrysler dealer, and once at a Toyota dealer) to address the A/C and PS problems, only to be told that "nothing could be found." Last inspection, a month ago, we were informed that the car has an oil leak, now. Just today, the PS failed completely, and the AC no longer blows cold air. Are these problems linked? I’m not sure, but will probably find out tomorrow, when I ask a mechanic to take a look at the issues.

I bought this vehicle in 2007 from Audi Northshore in Milwaukee. Mileage at that time 67,793 When I originally test drove it I told them the brakes were not working properly. They advised they just replaced them so it would take awhile for them to break in. They advised they would check them again, I decided to purchase the vehicle plus an additional warranty that was over $2,000.00. The first problem I had was less than 3 months after I purchased the vehicle on 1/10/2008. I went to leave for work car would not start. Issue was to repair wires to alternator. camshaft position sensor, the wires to the alternator where not installed to retaining clips and my rear defrost wires looms were broke as well. Back trunk latch broken will not open properly. Total bill $400.08 mileage at this time 69,047. Warranty would not cover latch nor would dealer. Second issue 4/30/2008 I was driving vehicle failed to stop or slow, I pulled emergency brake and I was standing on the break petal car accelerated through a fence. Even with car in park you could hear the car trying to accelerate. Called dealer told me not their problem I bought it used and I probably had the floor mat stuck on gas petal. (floor mats are locked in place not possible) Had car towed. They replaced Rotor and calipers, also found a coolant leak. Total bill $638.01. Mileage at this time 71,736 Warranty nor dealer would step up. July 16,2008 Driving 1 hour from home car will not shift out of second gear. Shut car off car will shift but now check engine light on. Find out that it is a Solenoid pack cost to repair $308.06 At the same time found power steering fluid leak at cooler assy. Hose has been rubbed through . Will need to replace power steering hose-Pressure and steering reservoir and cooler. (warranty only covers the hose) Mileage at this point 75,083 I have also replaced front brakes and rooters, have had oil changes every 3,000 miles give or take 600 miles. Car now just shut off at a stop light and check oil light came on. I am 450 miles over for an oil change and a quart and a half low on oil. Also as I am driving car will jerk forward even if I have shifted through all gears and I am going at 75mph car will lunge forward. Also since I have owned the car if I turn on my blinkers the fog light sensor go on or off. They were never connected when I bought the car I contacted the previous owner to find out they never worked for him either. Alarm system as worked ONCE since I owned the vehicle. NO ONE WILL HELP ME and this warranty covers NOTHING. Jennifer Lynn Hernke

Chrysler PT Cruiser suffer from a excessive oil consumption problem that consumes at least a quart or more of oil every 500 miles. I have oil change receipts and and bulk oil receipts!! I’ve experience everything that this web site states with my PT Cruiser! http://ptcruiserproblems.com/

Car consumes approx. 1 qt of oil every 1000 miles. Dealership told me this was within acceptable specifications.
Car battery also dies if the car is not driven for 2-3 days. Have replaced the battery twice in 2 years.

Alarm sounds w/ excessive noise [speakers from loud music]
Vibration while in parking deck or trucks while parked on the street. This happened from the very beginning, but has gotten progrssively worse.
Dealership repair shops don’t know what to do. Now, they’re saying it’s the battery. Once they replaced someting @ Jim Burke in BHM. But now, we’re back to making the alarm go off while it’s at their location.
Something needs to be done. This is a factory installed alarm and I feel that the alarm going off ALL the time has drained the battery, rather than the old battery making the alarm go off. HELP!!!!!!!!

Airbag light came on for no reason. Sometimes goes off. Sometimes dings. NEVER flashes. 1st attempt at chrysler dealership: $92.00 charge – "found old stored computer code. Reset. Light went off.". On my way home the light came back on. 2nd attempt (next day) at chrysler dealership: Sent home and light came back on as well as half dashboard lights not on. 3rd attempt (next day) at chrysler dealership: "Can’t find the problem. Need to remove dashboard to do more exploratory searching. $500.00 minimum to start." I declined because they didn’t know what they were doing, it was the passenger airbag and I was told "If the moon and the stars align just right and you go over the right bump at the right speed it MIGHT deploy." 4th attempt in October 2009: Returned to chrysler dealership and was told that the prior owners of the dealership put a note in teh system "found faulty wire in wiring harness. must be replaced. declined service." I was NEVER told that they knew what the problem is. 5th attempt in October 2009: Mechanic removed battery, checked all wires in main computer. removed dash, removed airbag. Peformed resistance test – 0 reading. Removed center console. Looked at all wires leading into airbag computer module. Nothing visible. Ran code reader from 2 different auto parts store: no codes, no faults, no errors. Ran Chrysler on-board diagnostic. No faults, no codes. 6th attempt in October 2009: Took car to different Chrysler dealership, asked for code (had been told only Chrysler can get the airbag code as it requires an expensive reader). $96.00 later was told there were no codes but found an "open squib in an open circuit" and thus it’s the passenger airbag that needs to be replaced. I asked "Did you find a faulty wire?". "No." "A faulty wiring harness?". "No." I then told them the above and he said "I don’t know why they would have told you that. It’s the airbag. $1,100.00." Have done extensive online research: Appears this is a common problem for 2001 owners. Further, I have ordered an airbag from a salvage yard and was told that Chrysler changed the airbag from 2001 to 2002 which suggests they are aware of an issue. Why is an airbag no warrantyied for it’s life (with the exception of an accident)? Why would an airbag go bad out of the blue?

Let me start by saying i just bought this 2001 limited edition pt cruiser three days ago from a private dealer. i was on the highway, heading home from work in the middle of the night, and wanted to try the cruise control. i turned it on and set it for 67mph to see if it worked first. then i went to reset it to my actual desired speed by tapping my brakes, then i tried the switch on the arm of my steering wheel but the cruise control wouldn't shut off. i got off at the next exit and was able to slow down to 40mph before my brakes locked up and i was forced to run the stop sign at the end of the off ramp. (thank god it was at 3am and my baby wasn't with me!). i was able to pull over doing 20mph before the brakes locked up again. i quickly shut it off, put it in park, and waited a few minutes to turn it back on. but the engine just kept reving, as if i was holding my foot on the gas because the cruise control was still on! i tried resetting it by turning the key back and forth a few times. i tried to see if it would throw me a code but only "done" appeared on my dash. every time i started the car, the led for cruise control would come on and then shut off after a few seconds. i was able to coast home doing 40mph with access to my brakes again. not very well, but enough to make it home, (when i'd let off the brake the car would take off again). i've been doing research since i got back and found a few other reports of this happening, except they were all able to stop. for example by shifting into neutral or shutting the car off. every time i start the damn thing, the cruise control is still on! how do i shut it off?

The car will shut off and not restart for at least 10 minutes. i have taken it to several mechanics and when the tester is applied no code appears and none have been able to tell us what the problem is. i took to the internet and found numerous instances of the same circumstances but no solution. this is dangerous because there is no warning, it just stops. do to the highly dangerous situation we only take it on the street where the likelihood of collateral injuries can be better controlled. this has been ongoing for about (6) months, the last time was about 6 weeks ago

Power steering fluid is leaking from the high pressure hose where it is routed under the engine casing. the high pressure hose appears to have been warn through by rubbing against one of the clamps which secure the hose to the bottom of the engine casing. power steering pump was making whining noises. power steering fluid reservoir was checked. dipstick was dry.

Engine fan does not turn on causing car to overheat. i have spoken to other owner that have a pt cruiser (different years) and they also have the same problem with the fan. i called the chrysler dealer which did not have enough complaints about this so they are not issuing any recalls yet. i took this car to my mechanic and he could not determine what is causing this but he did not have the equipment to check the car computer. another place has the equipment but wants $200. to see if it is a problem with the computer. i feel that chrysler should cover this since it does not just effect my vehicle but many pt cruisers.

While driving the vehicle pulled the steering wheel hard to the right. we were driving slow in town, had this happened at highway speed a wreck would have been unavoidable . got the vehicle towed home and took a look at it . found the front sub frame (to which the steering gear, lower control arms and such are bolted to) had rusted to the point that it cracked , on the right hand side. this allowed the right lower control arm to shift backward causing the death pull to the right.

I have always had trouble keeping air in the tire of this car. i have talked to other owners and they to have had trouble. it is the chrome wheels that is causing the problem. we have not had an accident but i'm sure some one has. it also happened in my daughters stratus rt , chrome wheels. i talked to gm people that had chrome wheel from that era and they to had problems with the chrome wheels. i was wondering if you have had any other complaints of this nature. i still have the car but my daughter got rid of hers. we had to put another tire on the car this week because the tires keep losing air. i talked to the dealership years back and they said there was know problem. i should have done this years ago but never did.

The driver seat belt will not stay fastened it comes lose and hits me in the face or head as it retracts the failure of it to lock in in this type of circumstance is dangerous and the seat belt is ineffective and makes the car unsafe

Front sub frame (cross member) broke apart at weld.

After regular road driveing for a month had front tires wear down to steel belt, purchased tires at walmart so took car back in to have tires looked at was told it was an alignment issue. i know this is not the case because car had just been serviced and alignment checked the same day tire were put on car. the wear out is on the insides of both front tires, and minor wear on the insides of the rear tires as well as majority of the tread is worn off as well on all 4 tires. this wear down caused me to go into ditch in snowy conditions, while driveing at safe speeds.

Was driving vehicle going 55 mph and dashboard faults out with incoherent readings and transaxle shifts self into neutral. i shift gear selector into neutral and back into drive. dashboard readings go back to normal and transaxle goes back into drive. 15 seconds later battery light comes on. continue driving to find a place to park. after about 10 seconds engine stalls out. shift gear selector into neutral and try to restart vehicle but it won't start. coast to a stop and open hood. notice an odd smell. open hood and alternator is on fire. close hood and grab personal belongings (except for phone charger) out of vehicle. call 911 as vehicle burns up. fire and police arrive and extinguish fire but vehicle badly destroyed by being engulfed in flames.

Dashboard started cracking and continued to crack from windshield area all the way down to bottom,then another crack started and did the same.these dashboards arent made properly and both cracks are on the passenger side.im afraid the airbag will deploy someday.my wife has a chrysler 300m 1999 and she has the same problem with her dashboard.

I slowed downed for a rail road crossing and after i crossed it the front end dropped down . i lost control of the car . the car veered right . i got stopped before i got to the ditch . we couldn't move the car . had it towed to a garage . after inspection they told me the frame that holds the suspension together rusted through and broke in half . it pushed the suspension up and against the engine . if i would have been going any faster could have veered left to a head on crash or hit the ditch and flipped the car . definitely think this is design flaw , when your frame fails and you loose control of your vehicle . a pot hole could at 55 mph could have done the same thing only with more tragic consequences. *tr

I purchased a used 2001 pt cruiser on the way home when i came to a stop at a light, it sounded like water rapidly boiling with smoke coming out from under the hood. i have look up this problem and saw that this is a common problem from 2001 to 2008 pt cruisers, no one seems to know what the problem is, it went from a radiator cap to the blades coming off of the fan. i don't know how so many vehicles can have this same problem without there being a recall to fix this. to lower the engine heat i have to put the heat or ac up to the highest setting. i have had the thermostat and radiator cap replaced. how can this same problem go unfixed from year to year? i have looked into this till i exhausted all avenues to look, everyone says the same thing, from year to year, water boiling sound, car overheating almost everything under the hood replaced and still this same problem exist. i am shocked that i did not see this problem listed on your site. all you have to do is google it. you will be shocked to see how many people have this problem year after year, yet it goes unfixed. chrysler should be responsible for this problem and fix it. i am afraid that my car is going to just stop on the highway and have someone slam into the back of me where my two grandchildren sit. the light to show it is overheating never lights up. there are no warnings! no bells or whistles going off. just smoke coming out of the car with liquid shooting out all over. i am very concerned that this will cause my engine to catch on fire!! if this is not a safety issue then i don't know what is! sincerely, pt cruiser owner. *tr

Center of steering wheel (where airbag is located) became so hot that it could not be touched with your bare hand. pulled over and got out of the vehicle and turned vehicle off. waited until it cooled down to normal temperature then got back in and restarted vehicle and moved seat all the way back from the steering wheel just in case. the heating phenomenon did not recur in the short drive home (5-10 minutes). has not happened again. scheduling a visit to local dealer to determine if this is a known problem. nothing found on chrysler recall information and email to chrysler got no response. this is a 2001 chrysler pt cruiser with package 28g that included supplemental side airbags. *tr

My car just shuts off leaving me no control to stop, turn, or get out of the way of traffic behind me..... @ 55mph to nothing is asking to be hit from behind. or if turning across a divided highway, to be left stuck with 2 lanes of semi coming for me and my kids. now it sometimes wont even do anything when i crank over the ignition (like there is no battery) or if it cranks and starts it will shut off right away. it wants to idle down at stops and stall. i have had it in the shop more than i like n spent more money to have to be told they can't find anything. i read of so many other owners with the same problems who end up junking these cuz they just stop starting....sad, we need our cars to run. chrysler knows they r riddled with serious issues including the lights and transmissions.....these are a bad combination on the road. someone needs to look @ some stats! thanks. *tr

While driving the down the highway, the entire rear quarter window on the passenger side including the frame and the glass separated from the body of my vehicle and went into the roadway. this is already a recall issue for the 2005 and 2006 models of the pt cruiser, but since it is not an existing recall issue with the 2001 models chrysler refused to replace the window that fell out or the remaining rear quarter window on the drivers side, which could potentially do the same thing at some point. fortunately, the window that fell off my car didn't injure anyone, but it certainly seems like a pretty serious road hazard. *tr

Made a right hand turn and heard a metal clunk noise, proceeded another block - from a stop made a left hand turn onto a highway - at that time a very loud metal noise, no brakes, no steering, no control of veh at all. somehow managed to get to side of road without rolling veh, wheels turned opposite directions, had veh towed to shop. engine cradle was rusted out on right side and gave way, which disconnected steering control arm and axel from the wheels, mechanic - stated dripping from air conditioner had rusted the parts on that side only - rest of under veh was in good shape - stated had seen this in pt's often - a known chrysler issue with the pt cruisers and the neons also - which have the same platform. if had been going at highway speeds - would have been a very bad, possibly fatal accident. own two of these vehs - took the second veh to have inspected (only has 50,000 miles) - has the exact same issue. researched the pt cruiser forums and found many complaints on the same issue. chrysler is non responsive - this should be recalled as is a deadly problem. vehicle is unrepairable. *tr

I have had many problems with this car to include electrical, over heating (which was never fixed even after taking it to the dealership 3 times), and transmission. in 2013 as i was driving down a busy 4 lane hwy. i heard a sudden and loud booming noise and the car began shaking violently. thinking that i had hit something in the road i began slowing down and making my way to the shoulder of the hwy. but before i could get to the shoulder of the hwy. the car made that loud booming noise a second time and shook violently again. it then lost all power to the front wheels leaving me stranded in the middle of the hwy. after removing and opening up the transmission i found that the drive shaft in the center of the transmission had sheared in half. upon further inspection i believe that the slightly worn engine mounts cause a binding action on the drive shaft in the transmission thus causing the shaft which is made of a composite material to basically explode inside the transmission. this problem is so well known by us car buffs that jasper engines inc. (a well known company that remanufactures engines and transmissions) replaces this stock shaft with a stronger more robust one when they remanufacture these transmissions. the violent shaking of the car that happened when this transmission shaft failed almost cause me to loose control of the vehicle on a very busy hwy. chrysler should recall all transmissions with this type of composite shaft. *tr

I first sent this complaint on mar 7, 2014 and received an email reply acknowledging it, but since haven't heard anything. is my complaint being taken seriously? it is a serious complaint as follows: on feb 5, 2014, my 2001 pt cruiser shut down while it was being driven down a busy street. it didn't make a sputter or a sound, it just died. luckily, it coasted long enough for me to pull off onto a quieter street and up against a curb. we had it towed to the automotive shop the explanation for the motor shutting down was alarming. the automotive tech reported the crankshaft position sensor needed replacing. as i understand, when this sensor goes bad, the engine automatically shuts down. with no warning. i had gas in my pt. i don't think people know about this; the tech said most cars that are 'newer' (as far back as 2002, at least) have this sensor. this is a serious safety concern and appears to be widespread. i looked through every page of my 2001 pt cruiser owner's manual and didn't find any indication that there would be a problem like this or that the crankshaft position sensor should be tested regularly, if it could be tested, that is. the national highway traffic safety administration would be doing the public a lifesaving service to look into the danger of this failed design, not to just replace them in all cars with a new one, but with one that is not designed to fail at the risk of the drive and anyone else in the vicinity when a moving car decides to just shut down. with no warning. there is not a time frame for this part to fail, but cars that are around my cruisers may be ready to give out. please look into this dangerous situation. I bought a car from north coast auto mall and it had a lot of suspension problems. they ensured me that they would fix these issues if i bought the car. after buying the car, they have had me in and out of their shop 4 or 5 times to which they only lube the parts or lie to me claiming that the car has been fixed. i feel that this business practice is unsafe and misleading. they claimed to have replaced a control arm to which goodyear later (when i was buying tires) informed me that my control arms were bad. i was surprised to hear this. north coast should be investigated as they are selling unsafe cars, claiming to repair issues and then putting me in an unsafe car. 30 claims have been made about similar issues via the better business bureau, the federal trade commission and the ohio attorney general. i feel that they should be investigated for safety reasons. *tr

The chrome rims leak air because they have been leeching (peeling) since the purchase of the vehicle. i have only owned the vehicle for 6 years (i bought the vehicle with approximately 68,000 miles) and have averaged 8700 miles per year. i have had the rims sealed at least a dozen times since i purchased the vehicle but the seals only last for short periods due to the constant peeling. currently, i have to fill the tires with at least 20 pounds of air every 2-3 days. my biggest fear is that they will fail while i am driving on the highway. *tr

While slowing down to stop for a red light my car suddenly veered to the right. i had to turn the steering wheel to the left to keep the car straight while i stopped. i had the car towed to a garage and upon inspection they found the crossmembers under the engine were completely rusted and broken. i bought the car new and although the car is 13 years old it only has 56,000 miles and has always been stored in a garage.

On feb 5, 2014, my 2001 pt cruiser shut down while it was being driven down a busy street. it didn't make a sputter or a sound, it just died. luckily, it coasted long enough for me to pull off onto a quieter street and up against a curb. we had it towed to the automotive shop the explanation for the motor shutting down was alarming. the automotive tech reported the crankshaft position sensor needed replacing. as i understand, when this sensor goes bad, the engine automatically shuts down. with no warning. i had gas in my pt. a car can shut down completely while in motion? with no warning? i am mortified that this is possible! is it really possible? but, evidently, it is true, since that's what the tech is replacing. i am thankful that it didn't happen 2 days earlier when i had my elderly mother in the car on the watterson expressway. i don't think people know about this; the tech said most cars that are 'newer' (as far back as 2002, at least) have this sensor. this is a serious safety concern and appears to be widespread. i looked through every page of my 2001 pt cruiser owner's manual and didn't find any indication that there would be a problem like this or that the crankshaft position sensor should be tested regularly, if it could be tested, that is. the national highway traffic safety administration would be doing the public a lifesaving service to look into the danger of this failed design, not to just replace them in all cars with a new one, but with one that is not designed to fail at the risk of the drive and anyone else in the vicinity when a moving car decides to just shut down. with no warning. there is not a time frame for this part to fail, but cars that are around my cruisers may be ready to give out. please look into this dangerous situation. I own a turbo booster child car seat ,manufactured 5-28-2012 by graco children's products inc.. the child safety seat will snap out from the base and it can recline all the way back like laying position! there was not enough safety installation instructions when we bought it. on november 19 8 am i get ready drive to work and my 3 year old was buckled in her car seat behind the drivers side of my 2001 chrysler pt cruiser she was belted over her shoulder correctly, she was not restrained safe enough because we are lucky to be alive. we were tboned by a kenworth semi logging truck coming out of our driveway, she was thrown out of the carseat on the floor behind my drivers seat. she caught her finger on the belt it was dislodged before thrown to the floor and she received stitches on her index finger laceration she also was hurt on the head back and belly she was taken to the hospital by ambulance (related vehicle information: model year=2001, make=chrysler, model=pt cruiser) *tr

While driving at 30 miles an hour, the front suspension cross-member broke as a result of severe rust. this caused the right front wheel to steer towards the ditch creating a significant safety hazard. the rust was caused by water draining from the air conditioner onto the passenger's side of the cross-member. i have attempted to order a replacement part from chrysler but so far the outlook for delivery has changed four times and is currently estimated for 12/25/2013 (2.5 months after the car became inoperable). not only does chrysler ignore the numerous reports of this commonly reported design flaw, they are proving to be incapable at providing replacement parts. this is evident as i am one of 28 car owners who are waiting for this part from chrysler, and there is high demand for this part from junkyards. *tr

Upon inspection during a repair for another problem it was discovered that the front suspension crossmember known as the k-frame is severely corroded and will likely not pass another safety inspection. the rest of the underneath of this car is relatively rust-free and this is a low mileage vehicle for its age. if this part fails going down the highway the engine, transmission, etc. will all drop and cause the vehicle to lose control. *tr

I was making a right hand turn from a main road onto a side street. while the car was turning, i heard a clunk and the steering wheel was jerked from my hands. the car pulled hard to the right and crashed into the curb. the car was towed to the repair shop and the service tech showed me the engine cradle was completely rusted out and the k frame was cracked all the way thru. it's to rusted to be welded and i was told this is a common problem with the cruiser and dodge neon, since they use the same frame. the tech also told me i was lucky that i wasn't moving at high speed or the results could have been fatal. he also told me that chrysler is aware of this problem, they are completely out of replacement parts, and they basically ignore any complaints. *jb

I was not initially going to file a complaint until i seen others with the same problem. the dash cracked into many pieces. i originally thought that my wife had done something to crack the dash, and she thought that i had. the part remained basically intact until the service department at the local chrysler dealer had to remove the dash for other repairs. at that time we had to pay for another dash because it fell completely apart and could not be re-assembled. i am not sure if this is exactly a highway traffic safety concern, but only because there was not an accident, nor an incident. *tr

Was driving daughter to work and began to smell a burning odor. however, i assumed it was a passing vehicle (streets were very well lit, and i would not have noticed my lights were out). the next morning my wife was heading out to pick-up our daughter from work, and was flashed by the local police for not having lights on. through the process of elimination i decided to replace the multifunction switch. when i received the switch and attempted to install it i noticed that the wiring harness was slightly melted. upon investigating the internet for a harness i came upon several websites with numerous complaints involving the same problem. (if everyone were to unite and post their complaints here there would be many) these problems seem to be related to a shorting out of the wiring caused by the oem fog lights. this however, did not cause either the dash fuse or the engine compartment fuse to blow, which is a real concern. *tr

The front suspension cross-member is severely rusted and will require replacement before the car will pass inspection. the car was in for routine service when my mechanic pointed out that the only rusted part on the vehicle was the front suspension cross-member and that it was bordering on unsafe. this car has relatively low miles at 76k and is in excellent condition otherwise. this rusted part could fail with no indication that danger was imminent and cause loss of steering and ultimately a vehicle crash at any speed. *tr

Fog lights malfunction very frequently. for the past couple of months, vehicle's battery has been drained because the fog lights are on (which are never turned on or even used) and will not go off. happens frequently and it's difficult to get the fog lights to go off, the lights control has to be jiggled just right to get them to go off so we know the battery won't be drained after a few hours. lately, it has gotten harder and harder to get them to turn off and finally had to pull the fuse in order to make them go off. *tr

Car suddenly began overheating without warning. very scary situation,evidently this is common with pt cruisers. why have there been no recalls? *tr

Vehicle was used to drive to local store at night. fog lights were not turned on at any time. i parked in department store parking lot and came out after shopping for about 45 minutes and noticed a burning smell coming from pt cruiser. opened the drivers door and odor became more apparent. noticed smoke rolling out of steering column. also noticed fog lamp indicator on dashboard was on. however, all lights and switches were off. i had to pull out several fuses until i found the one related to the fog lamps. that was the only way to quickly power off the fog lamps and stop the smoldering. this is a potential fire hazard! *tr

Web site topix will confirm the incredible # of folks that have had fog lamps turn on after car is shut down causing battery drain. 100's have paid for replacement part multi-function switch. this controls fog, head, accessory, & dash lighting. to prevent the fog lamps from coming on by themselves, most have removed fuse # 8 to remove the fog lamps from the circuit. people report smoke coming from turn signal lever, & the complete loss of all lighting is quite common. i personally have replaced the multi-function switch 3 times on my wife's 2001 p.t. cruiser with only 50,000 total miles & she being original owner. by parking her car minus fuse # 8, not using dome lighting, & always parking with the signal lever in the down or left turn position has prevented the mystery fog lamp issue, & kept her battery functioning. this "temp" solution has allowed her about 6 or 8 months of driving w/o the problems other pt owners struggle with. sooner or later someone will lose lighting or a fire will occur inside the steering wheel which will cause serious injury, loss of vehicle & possibly death. chrysler denies any knowledge, but wants more than $1,000.000 to analyze & repair. through the topix p.t forum i was able to learn how to do the work myself for far less than $100. many are getting ripped off for hundreds while chrysler knows full well of the issue. no less than an investigation, perhaps started with the topix forum will demonstrate the incredible number of failures that still plague the p.t. on later models such as 2001 thru 06 or 08. also need 3rd. brake job, & the rims do not seal causing low tires that hurt mpg. driving comfort, & safety. dealer & i have tried michelin tires hoping the problem was with the factory installed goodyears. i still hear every 100 miles or so that my wife's p.t needs additional air pressure. *tr

The engine starting making a ticking sound while i was driving uphill about 40 mph. i stopped to check oil which was about 1/2 quart down. i proceeded to continue driving i went about another mile and the car started losing power. unknown to me but the car was already on fire. someone behind me alerted me and within a minute or two the pt cruiser was engulfed in flames. *tr

I was driving on a 2-lane road, light snow coming down going around 45 mph when the headlights went out. total darkness! i had been driving for about 25 minutes. if there would have been a car behind me i would have been in an accident. i stopped, turned off the engine, restarted the car and the headlights came on. i drove another 7 to 10 miles and the headlights started flashing. again, i stopped, turned off the engine, restarted the car, but this time i kept the dims on. i had been using the wipers to clear snow off the windshield and also my brights and dims for on-coming traffic. i drove back home with only my dims on.....lights went out 2 more times. i don't feel safe in this vehicle anymore. is it going to take a fatality before something is done? *tr

Car stalls on turns particularly to the left, upon key insertion hard crank or starts and idles roughly then shuts off with out warning. while idling at stop lights the rpms may or may not (rev,) after so many mins of driving acceleration becomes more difficult at intervals & stalling usually while turning at intersections. or going over bumps or up hills. this happens some what sporadically so i never can tell when i'm safe to go. definitely not something u want to think about w min coverage either way. *tr

According to the repair shop, the reason why tires are losing air so frequently is because there is an issue with the rims. i have now put 2 sets of 4 brand new tires on this car w/in the past couple of years and the tires are still losing air so much so that i must stop at least 2x/week to put air in them. i was just reading the complaints and came across other reports of this same incident. would like to see this as a recall since it's not just my car alone. *tr

Multifunction light switch in pt cruiser is poorly designed, resulting in unreliable exterior light operation. either can turn on fog lights, or lights remain on when car is off and switch is off and drains battery. mine has occurred 5x. internet search finds this to be common to pt's, with others reporting electrical short, smoke, and total meltdown of the multifunction switch. *tr

Purchased the car with 69,591 miles. car has always consumed more oil that normal. took a 200 mile road trip, upon return there was a rattling at the timing chain cover. tensioner pulley was bad. taken to mechanic shop with 93,643 miles at time of incident. while disassembling the car two broken motor mounts, busted lower control arm bushing, a bad water pump, busted radiator seal, and a bad tensioner pulley was discovered. the car never overheated or showed signs of any of these problems. after the car was put back together it idles high, cuts off, and overheats. timing has been checked and rechecked, it is in time. car runs well at higher speeds but cannot stay on at lower rpms. i am now replacing the fan, pcv valve and piping, and possibly going to perform a coolant flush. i haven't passed 100,000 miles and i'm already having this kind of trouble. *tr

I have a 2001 chrysler pt cruiser which has the 5 spoke wheels on it and all have the chrome coming off and the tires keep going flat. i have replaced all 4 tires thinking that was the problem. then goodyear showed me the wheel when they had it off the car and the tire off. it was cracked and the chrome is coming off inside and on the outside. my tires going flat is being caused by the wheels. now i need to replace those too. *tr

I have a 2001 pt cruiser. i noticed in your nhtsa id #10010478 you state that the front hub/half shaft click/pop sound. my car starting making such a sound immediately before all of the wheel studs where sheared off and the front right wheel separated from the automobile while going 60 miles an hour. i have all five studs that have been removed that can be inspected. i also have one of the lug nuts with part of the stud. the studs where sheared off even with the face of the rotor. there was no warning that there was a major problem with the vehicle before the wheel separated from the vehicle. *tr

My wheels on my 01 pt cruiser are causing my tires to go flat every 2 to 3 days. the wheels are alloy wheels that are peeling and corroded. i have spoken to chrysler and they said unless they have regular maintenance that they will corrode. i think that this is a major safety issue from running your tires too low from air lose due to the wheels. i have read over hundreds of customers with the same issues on this chrysler product. what can be done? *tr

High beam headlamps went off while driving at night. this occurred last oct. 2009. i replaced multi-function switch. then last week oct.3, 2010 same thing occurred. almost got hit by another car while stopping without headlamps. i cannot see why chrysler will not be held responsible for faulty switch. i will not drive at night until chrysler comes up with a fix for its poor switch design. *tr

The dashboard has been cracking from the center defrost vent towards the drivers side area. the crack is approximately 8 inches in length. the crack continues to grow due to the fact that when the vehicle is being driven, road vibrations cause the cracks to open and widen. i am concerned because the cracks could cause the dash to cave in which could have an effect on the air bag or wiring, which could be a safety issue. i contacted chrysler's assistance hotline and was told that nothing could be done since there was no recall on the vehicle and the vehicle was out of warranty. *tr

In one month's time, i have had 5 flat tires. after the second flat, i went to a tire dealer. the tire tread was low but the tires were not bald. i decided to have all 4 tires replaced. in the last 2 weeks, i have had to call aaa for 3 flat tires. after the first call, i took the car back to the tire dealer. he showed me the wheels that are completely corroded. they said that chrysler has had this problem for 10 years but nothing is ever done. i'm in the process of trying to find new wheels but in the week since i had the car in, i have had another flat. i should have been on the interstate when this happened but luckily had gotten a ride with someone else. when are these defective wheels going to be recalled. they are creating potentially life-threatening instances. *tr

Michelin hydroedge p205/55r16 installed perhaps 3--5 years ago went flat during a ~20 mile drive, but might have been underinflated (cold weather) beforehand. i was unable to find an operating tire pump for ~10 miles. when i applied air the tire wouldn't hold pressure. replacing it with the spare enabled me to see that on the inside the tread had split over a large circumference. *tr

Electrical short / failure in the car horn (simultaneously affecting the lcd of the clock/radio). issue stems from some electrical wiring in the steering column; not sure how the two are relates but when i bang on my steering wheel the lcd comes back and the horn is functional again. potential safety hazard as it affects the horn and ability to avoid accidents. no known fix from manufacturer alarms me. *tr

Engine light on/225+k miles, car mechanically sound, code p0601, runs good. bought in 2003 off daewoo lot. used. with 12+k miles. changed: valve cover,3 pcv's,egr tube,intake. normally change synthic oil sae 5/30 oil every 14k miles. with two oil filter changes every 7k miles., spark plugs every 6mos,with wires. mechanic takes off light, goes back on after the engine is turned back on. *tr

Faults within the headlight/foglight multifunction switch on the 2001 pt cruiser causes the foglights to illuminate, even when the switch is off. i replaced the switch, and although the foglights now work properly, there is now a fault in the dome light function, which causes the dome light to illuminate when the switch is off. i researched the component on-line and retrieved reports of headlights turning themselves off at random intervals. headlights, foglights, dashboard illumination, dome light and turn signals are all in the same component. for foglight defect, mechanic removed the appropriate fuse from the fuse panel as a temporary fix.

Airbag light intermittently comes on and goes off. sometimes will beep every few minutes until the engine is turned off for a few minutes. local chrysler dealership tried 3 times in a row unsuccessfully to find the problem. i was told it was not a safety issue and that it would not hinder from passing inspection, which it didn't. however i have now been told that when the light is on the airbag will not deploy making it a safety issue that will no longer pass inspection. there are quite a number of reports online of pt cruiser owners having the same issue. *tr

-steering wheel began shaking while driving car and steering became very loose. pulled into a pep boys and was told that the front control arms and bearings needed to be replaced (the car had 75k miles). i was told that this was a very common defect with these cars and that a recall should have been warranted. $1200 repair and car started shaking again 50k miles later. -continuous oil consumption. i put a quart of oil every two weeks in the car. i have had the car completely tuned by a family member who is a certified mechanic, and it still eats oil. i mentioned this to the repair technician who did the controls arms and bearings, and he confirmed that this was also a common problem with these cars. many of the websites i went on to research this have hundreds of the same comments for both issues. *tr

The turn signal/headlight control switch on my 01 pt cruiser has failed in that my right hand turn signal to the front does not come on. i have investigated this and been told by chrysler personnel that the probable cause is turn signal/headlight control switch on the steering column. this part is in backorder to the tune of approx 4600 parts and an after market company that i contacted said they are also in approx 30days backorder status trying to fill the need for replacements. in checking with on-line forums i've also found out that other problems with this particular switch involve headlight failure to operate and lights (fog lights) coming on without operator action. i believe this is a critical component failure and needs to be brought to someone's attention that there is a high probability of switch failing "un-announced" and causing serious injury not only to the operator of the pt cruiser but to other vehicle operators as well. *tr

2001 chrysler pt cruiser had a hole in fuel line. *nj the consumers wife was driving home, when she smelled gas. the consumer opened the hood and saw fuel coming from the fuel line that was rubbing against the air conditioner pipe and fitting. the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer and was informed there was a recall regarding this issue and according to their records, the recall was performed in 2002. the consumer stated either the recall was never done or the recall fix did not work and is seeking reimbursement for the new fuel line that was installed. *jb

In 2004 chrysler recalled pt cruisers with automatic transmissions for a fault with the power steering hose which caused fires in a few cars. they did not however cover 2001 pt cruisers with manual transmissions. *tr last week (8-20-09) my wife drove to the post office (2 miles from home) and smelled burning rubber, she drove the car directly back home. i examined the car that night and could find nothing wrong with the drive belts, tires, and there didn't seem to be any leaks. i took it for a quick test drive and everything seemed fine. the following day (8-21-09) my wife again drove the car to the post office, this time it started making grinding noises and was difficult to steer. she drove the car straight home again. there still didn't seem to be any leaks but when i test drove it i could tell the power steering was non functional. i opened the fill cap for the power steering fluid to check its level and the remaining fluid in the system drained onto my driveway. it seems like there had been a leak in the power steering hose that was being burnt off on the engine. we were fortunate that we were only using the car for local trips as it would have been much more dangerous if the hose had let go while we were driving on the highway. recall 04v268000, nhtsa action number pe04028, should be extended to the pt cruisers with manual transmissions as well before someone gets hurt. *tr

2000 pt cruiser with 50000 miles. multifunction light switch on steering column has failed in past two weeks. when vehicle turned off, fog lamps stay on. only way to get them to turn off is to turn on left turn signal. went to dealer to get replacement switch and we are #1500 on waiting list for new switch. chrysler has no outlook for when new switches will be available. pulled fog light fuse to keep fog lights de-energized. great risk according to widely distributed reports that light wiring harness can fail, melt and start fire. the only safe thing to do is park car and remove battery until new switch is available. *tr

The fuel line was recalled in 2002 under pt cruiser fuel line leaks against air conditioner and i had that repaired in 2002. i have done nothing to the fuel line since then. on july 25 2009, the fuel line sprung a leak. upon further investigation i noticed the line rubbed against the top of the engine which caused the hole in the fuel line. obviously fuel was leaking onto the engine the consequences of the leak could have been catastrophic and life threatening to myself and family. the fuel line is threaded under the power steering pump hose and over the engine to the fuel injection rail. over the miles the line rubbed the top of the engine which caused the hole in the fuel causing gas to squirt and leak in the engine compartment. i replaced the line to repair. i did keep the old fuel line and took pictures of the engine where it rubbed. i believe this to be a design flaw, by allowing the fuel line to rub on the engine and held down by the power steering pump hose. *tr

Unexplainable complete battery drain began in 08/2008. discovered in 03/2009 that the fog lights were coming on and staying on when car was on as well as when off and parked thus, causing the battery drain. only way to keep fog lights off was to engage the left turn signal or remove the fuse. took to dealer 03/21/2009 and found the issue is with the multifunction switch, with a replacement cost of $269. went ahead with the replacement as i do use the fog lights. have searched internet and have found many, many cases of this exact part defect. chrysler should recall. *tr

Hole in exhaust system near fuel tank caused the plastic fuel tank to literally melt and leak fuel. the metal shield near the tank does not adequately protect the tank. it is a miracle that the vehicle did not catch fire. the entire fuel tank assembly and fuel lines near the tank have to be replaced. *tr

During routine oil change the mechanic found that the threads welded into the oil pan had come loose. car needed a new oil pan. i was told that this is a "fairly common problem" because the pan is aluminum and the threaded piece is steel and since the two metals have different expansion and contraction temperatures that over time the weld is broken and the thread "breaks loose" from the pan. seems to me this should be a recall as it is a poor design. *tr

My 2001 chrysler pt cruiser has discolorations (white stripes) on the dark gray front and back bumpers because the auto maker put plastic and tape on them to protect them in delivery. the adhesive in the tape has destroyed the finish on the gray plastic. this started to show up after 6 years of owning it when it sat in the sun. most of the time i have owned this vehicle it was parked in a garage. for the past year it has been parked outside. this was when the stripes started to show up. chrysler is aware of the problem and says they have a "tsb" on it but says they are not willing to fix it and that i (the consumer) have to go buy products to fix it myself, which i don't understand how you can make sun bleaching and fading go away, it's permanently damaged. they stated that under no circumstance will this be covered under warranty. i have driven around to see if other pt's are having the same problem and every pt cruiser i have seen with a gray plastic bumper has the same defect. i have taken photos of 5 different ones just today. this is irresponsible for chrysler to deny they are at fault when clearly they caused the problem by putting tape on our bumpers. if my car had been in to a repair shop and they had placed tape on the bumpers they would be responsible and liable for their actions. i am frustrated that they won't do anything to fix this problem. these discolorations are a permanent problem and are sun bleached, they won't just go away. i would like my bumpers either replaced or painted to match the rest of the car. i am also spreading the word to other pt cruiser owners, in hopes that chrysler will see that this is a big problem and is not going to go away on its own. this will cause a financial hardship on my family to repair this ourselves. *tr

We have a 2001 chrysler pt cruiser. while driving on a freeway, the rear left wing window fell out and was run over by the vehicle following us. fortunately, no one was hurt but it could have caused a serious accident. there is a recall on the 2005 model for this very problem (07v149000). our local dealer told us to take up the issue of repair with chrysler, which we did, and they replied that they would not honor the recall for our model year, even though it is exactly the same problem. therefore, i want to file a complaint so that the official record shows that the same problem does indeed exist in earlier models.

Dashboard cracks - 3 total. first one appeared late 2007 on the left side of the center vent. then, shortly after another one popped up from the back of the center vent. approximately one month later a 3rd on (the largest one) appeared from the front of the vent straight to the front edge of the dash board. part of the center vent spokes are breaking now and when i put the armourall on the dash i have to be very careful not to put too much pressure on it as i'm wiping it on. *tr

The air conditioner failed and a foul pungent odor was coming out of the blower. since it was the end of summer and the cost to fix it was so much, we waited until this year to repair it. the blower was used during the winter with the same foul odor blowing out of it. the cause of the smell was investigated and nothing was found. the fan was replaced but that did nothing. they (the dealer replaced the fan again but nothing. we had to spray disinfectant in the car on a daily basis to eliminate the odor. as a consequence, i got a severe upper respiratory infection. finally, the dealer said we needed an evaporator which they replaced. the car had less then 50,000 miles. we realized after this was replaced that the odor went away and the air was so cold that i do not believe that the air conditioner worked well from the first day that we had it. when we complained about it not throwing out cold air (when it was new), we were told that it is because it is a 4 cyl. car. now i find that i am leaking antifreeze. they said it was the thermostat housing, so it was replaced. still leaking........now they want to try the water pump. what's next? *tr

I got a power steering leak in my 2001 pt cruiser. it was the power steering fluid cooler. but i was told my the chrysler dealer that there was an upgrade, that i couldn't get the oe cooler, i had to get a new cooler, hose, and resorvoir. to be purchased by me and the labor to install them to be paid by me. i said i didn't want an upgrade, i just wanted the oe cooler. once again i was told that i had to get the upgrade. i said that i would pay for the cooler and labor to install it, i thought that chrysler should pay for any additional parts and labor. i was told that chrysler would not do this. i feel that they should either replace the part that is defective and charge me, or do any additional work at their expense. they wouldn't do it. *tr

I have had to replace the entire front "engine cradle", also known as the "k-frame" or "front sub-assembly". it is the structural steel framework bolted to the underbody that the lower control arms attach to. the steering rack is bolted to the top of it. the lower engine torsion connector is mounted to it. the reason? total rust out! the right wheel hub and lower control arm broke away from the k-frame because of rust. the car was being driven slowly at the time, and that was a good thing, because the car could barely be driven after. no accident occurred. *tr

The dashboard has cracked in half from the center of the base of the windshield, through the oval defroster grating, and all the way back to where the dash meets the center console. the defroster grating has actually fallen into the dash, and other smaller cracks are forming off of the main one. i didn't complain about this problem when it happened until i recently discovered that other owners were having similar problems. chrysler has been most unhelpful and has has denied any culpability. *tr

Owner noticed a slight "puddle" (size of a silver dollar) on garage floor. owner jacked up car to inspect and identify where leak was originating. noted a misplaced bushing on the bracket holding the power steering hose in place under the engine. one end of the bushing had broken allowing the hose to chafe against the bracket and leak fluid. owner immediately took car into the dealer to have repaired. upon examination, dealer informed owner that the motor mounts (2) had broken allowing the engine to sit lower on the frame and that is what caused the bushing to fail. owner paid over $1,000 to replace motor mounts (2) and replace bushing and power steering hose. owner feels that motor mount failure was premature as the car only has 38,000 miles on it and has never been driven hard and has been garaged its entire lifetime. owner has in his possession the defective motor mounts. although there were no injuries or deaths, there certainly could have been if the owner had not been so observant and vigilant about maintaining the car. loss of power steering function or engine detachment would be catastrophic on the road, particularly at freeway speeds. *tr

The clockspring in my steering column broke. i noticed a rubbing noise and the steering wheel would stick when i turn the wheel to the right. the right turn signal when activated would not turn off when the steering wheel is turned in the opposite direction. i took it to the dealer and had the clockspring replaced at my expense. the dealer told me that the airbag would not deploy until the clockspring is replaced. for a item to fail on a vehicle that involves safety equipment and not be replaced at the manufactures expense is quite irresponsible and careless for the publics safety. *tr

Driving at 65mph on i75 the car began to vibrate. inspection showed approximately 10 cm x 2 cm separation on the outboard side of the left rear tire between the steel belts. (nylon overlay maintained the integrity of the tire). later inspection of the right rear tire showed a belt edge seperation of 3 cm.

I own a 2001 pt cruiser. i purchased the vehicle new. i have a concern that may lead to a catastrophic failure of the original equipment chrome plated aluminum wheels supplied with this vehicle. i have been noticing abnormal deterioration of the aluminum wheels on this vehicle. there appears to be some type of galvanic reaction between the aluminum wheel and the steel of the wheel hubs. this deterioration appears to be due to a bad fit between the aluminum wheel and the bearing hub. this deterioration has progressed to the point where the wheel bolt (lugs) pattern is affected. the manufacturer was no help when this issue was raised with them. my fear is that, if left uncorrected, the wheel could fail catastrophically at high speeds. this may be typical of several year for this vehicle type. *jb

2001 pt cruiser (touring edition) the rear seat, middle seat belt does not lock up when the seat belt is pulled/yanked on or the vehicle turns corners. my son at 3 months old went tipping over sideways when i made a left hand turn (less then 15 mph). he was safe and secure in his car seat with matching base, but the whole thing tipped over. i tried manually getting it to lock so the base of my sons car seat would stay in place, but i had no luck. he tipped a few times, so i decided to move the seat closer to the drivers side rear door. so now what? do i keep risking him tipping over or risk him being closer one of the doors? *jb

Re: 2001 pt cruiser tire pressure loss from chrome plating failing on the rims allowing air loss i wish to document my extreme dissatisfaction concerning my experience with chrysler concerning what i have come to learn is without question, a serious manufacturer¿¿s defect with the wheels of my car. the wheels have not provided anywhere near a reasonable service life and whose problem had been misdiagnosed until the basis of failure had degraded until its cause was without question, apparent. i have also learned that problem is also recognized by chrysler service dealerships as a routine problem, is abundantly documented and widespread on focused websites related to this vehicle and is problem familiar to each tire shop i have gone to. without question this problem poses an extreme danger to drivers of the vehicle who unknowingly will drive on a potentially extremely under-inflated tire. their position in my opinion to merely ¿¿not recognize it as a problem¿ and not warn the owners of your vehicle to alert them to this common problem is unconscionable, callous and constitutes an extreme hazard to the driving public.

The front hubs and bearings on the 2001 pt cruiser needed to be replaced at 54000 miles. i was told by the dealer this was a potentially dangerous condition. after some research online i discovered that many pt owners had the same problem, sometimes repeatedly. this may be related to a design defect and should be investigated.*ak

Premature failure of front lower control arm bushings. this vehicle had 37,000 miles with both right and left bushings failed. without replacement, this can lead to additional suspension wear and in an extreme case, loss of control. bushings of this type in typical vehicles lasts the life of the vehicle. according to my independent garage this component shows an inordinately high failure rate, as evidenced by their experience in replacing them in many pt crusiers. they see them at a rate of one every two weeks, and this was an independent garage, not a chrysler dealership. this problem was caught at pennsylvania annual state inspection.*ak

Tires going flat not holding air pressure. all four rims started flaking and coming apart, had to have them resealed at least 4 times a year. went out and bought four new rims. *tr

I bought a 2001 chrysler pt cruiser in february 2007. when i bought it there was a crack in the dashboard,that became quite larger in just a few months, i am concerned about this because the crack/split was growing. since i bought the vehicle used i figured it was my problem, but i knew of other people with the same problem. this was a defect in the vehicle that could cause problems with the vehicle. my husband and i bought a dashmat cover to help so the dashboard won't get as hot, but it still grew. what could i do about this? *ak

I own a 2001 pt cruiser. i tried to have a flat tire fixed on this car, the tire service person informed me that the rim had a crack that was more then an inch long and they would not allow a new tire to be mounted on the rim. i had to get a friend to pick me and my children up and go without my car until i was able to locate a replacement rim used from a rim dealer in dayton ohio. all the original rims belonging to this car are pitted, peeling, some won't hold air or are split. the rims i'm told are the cause of tire failure and premature wear and frequent flats. i find these issues to create unsafe driving conditions. *tr

Tl*- the contact noticed that 3 out of his 4 tires were leaking. he took the 2001 pt cruiser to a tire shop and at the tire shop they stated that the bridgestone fusion tires were fine, the failure was on the metal inside the rims that was coming apart. the contact can provide pictures if needed. the failure mileage was 114000 and the current mileage was 118000.

The fog lamps on the 2001 pt cruiser come on and stayed on their own accord. this caused a dead battery 3 times. when i opened the door the alarm went off. sometimes the instrument panel worked correctly, sometimes it did not. sometimes the keyless entry worked and sometimes it did not. when it did work, i could not get the door to unlock with the key, it relocked by itself, leaving me locked out of my own car and stranded on several occasions. i could not lock the door on driver's side with electronic door lock. must individually lock all doors. smoke came from the top of the steering column , through hazard light switch on two occasions. dealer suggested $200. replacement of multi function switch - but research showed thiswas not a remedy to the problem. i live in a remote, rural area, and do not feel safe or secure with this vehicle. *ak

My 2001 chrysler pt cruiser's fog lights will not go off even when the car is not running unless the left turn signal is turned on. if the turn signal switch is not turned on the fog lights drain the battery leaving me stranded and requires recharging or replacement of the battery. multiple forums i've read lead me to believe this is a massive problem with the pt cruiser. it requires replacement of a multifunction switch at a cost of over $200. *jb

(1) loss of tire air pressure noticed on two different wheels, three weeks apart. (2) pressure loss due to corrosion on chrome-plated alloy wheels on 2001 chrysler pt cruiser. (3) temporary correction was to grind corrosion and seal the bead with truck wheel sealer. upon conversation with a chrysler dealership, i was told that ultimately the wheels will need to be replaced, as this is a common occurrence. i was further told that, in fact, they have experienced total wheel failure due to corrosion (holes all the way through the wheel). upon further research, i found that this has also been the case with chrysler 300s and dodge durangos. *jb

Tl* - the contact stated that he had goodyear eagle tires, 205/55 r16 eagle ls. at 31,000 miles the car was pulling to the left, and he took it to a dealer and found that the belts on the tire separated, causing the tread to shift. the contact stated that at 41,000 miles the back of the car began swaying sideways to the left and right, and it was determined that the belts on the tire separated again. the contact stated that the tread was fine, the belt in the tire was faulty. *ak the vehicle had a slight oil leak. the dealer replaced transmission solenoid pack. updated 03/19/07. *jb

2001 chrysler pt cruiser taillights came loose and out of the body of the car due to cracked plastic in taillight housing. taillight secured by one screw and one metal clip that fits in a cheap, flimsy piece of plastic inside the taillight housing. one pushes down on the clip to secure it to the body of the car. the plastic piece into which the clip goes cracked and broke off on both taillights. car is garaged 90% of the time eliminating exposure to the sun which might cause the cracking. a rather significant design flaw as one could easily completely loose the entire physical taillight(s)! *nm

2001 pt cruiser - chrome is peeling from rims which causes air to leak from tires. second set of tires is now installed but rims had to be re-sealed after about 10k miles. rims were resealed once before. chrysler was contacted with no resolution. they refused to acknowledge a problem on their part. *jb

I currently own a 2001 pt cruiser with 50,000 miles on it. to date, i have had three different mechanics tell me that the wheels/rims are deteriorating/peeling and should be replaced under warranty. as a result, i am also constantly putting air in some of the tires. my greatest worry, is having a "tire blow out" while traveling at higher speeds. i have also noticed that many other pt cruiser owners are experiencing the same problem. if the manufacturer of this vehicle is not willing to compensate me for the replacement of all four wheels, i have no other choice but to turn this over to the attorney general's office and/or media. this is clearly a safety issue and should be addressed accordingly. *nm

Over the past 6 months i have had 50 plus times where i have found my battery dead and the fog lamps on. over the last 3 years i have had fewer , but , regular times when this has also happened. i check to see that they are off as i exit the vehicle , and return to find them on and the battery dead. the switch on the end of the light control stick is not a good arrangement. it wears out the stop and then ( as mine is now ) you can not turn the fog lamps off. any little bump while i am driving and they come on. i have had to unplug these lamps ( rather than pay the ridiculous dealer replacement fee ) to keep my current ( 3rd this last 2 years ) battery from dying. i got the first retail pt delivery in wi on april 12 2000 and am sure in time all owners will find this problem. *nm

The connector plug for the fog lights shorted out causing it to smolder and the lights to remain on even though the key was removed. there was fire but no flame. the plug melted and cracked and will need to be replaced. *nm

Hello, i believe that there may be a recall on the front windows of the 2001 pt cruiser. i believe i may have saw a trickle of smoke once come out of the window controls. plus, the window makes a "screeching" sound when it goes down. *nm

Over approximately the past year i have been dealing with thelen auto group in bay city, michigan regarding defective rims on my 2001 pt cruiser. i am constantly replacing air in fairly new tires due to this. after speaking to thelen several times chrylser was called in december of 2005 (date below is approximate). after the dealer scraped and sprayed the rims to stop the peeling a couple of times thelen's mechanic (pat) stated that this just wouldn't work. pat also went on to add (in the presence of my father) that he never saw such a thing. this was on a june 2006 visit to replace my radiator. after several phone calls chrysler now states that the dealer told them it was just salt erosion and they would not replace the rims. chrysler also states that this info was given to them from mike thelen and his mechanic. mr. thelen states he did not says this. when asked if he would replace the rims from his dealer no matter what chrysler said; he refused. obviously someone is lying and i am at a stalemate. chrysler won't change it's mind-because of their phone calls with mike thelen-the owner- and his mechanic. on 07-17-06 i was told by daphney (phone for chrysler headquarters 248-576-5741) that once a decision was made it would not be changed. she also refused to let me speak to a supervisor or give additional info for the presidents headquarters-she stated her office has no idea how to contact them. *jb

Fog lights difficult to shut off even with key out of ignition, caught early enough to avoid fire/wiring meltdown. upon removal of switch assembly and disassembly of component plastic arm worn out allowed spring loaded contact to make light and constant contact producing a short circuit. once plastic fails no way to turn fogs off. *jb

2001 pt cruiser with under 40,000 miles. dealer checked rattling noise in rear and reports rear axle is shot. repair costs about $2,000.00. chrysler offered to provide parts. dealer labor is about $600.00. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated that the vehicle began leaking transmission oil while traveling on the highway at 65 mph uphill on a hot day and on dry roads. smoke was observed coming from the rear of the vehicle, so the vehicle was pulled over. the front hood was raised and the transmission's left driver side, exhaust, and rear tires were observed to be covered in transmission oil. the vehicle was towed to an auto repair shop who determined that the transmission cooler hose clamps were not installed properly. the auto repair shop replaced the hose clamps with stainless steel wormgear clamps, and filled the vehicle up with transmission oil. at the time of the incident, the operating temperature of the vehicle was hot. the vehicle is a chrysler pt cruiser.*ak

Dt*: the contact stated during an annual inspection the dealership determined the front control arm bushing was cracked. there was not a noticeable problem while driving the vehicle. an independent repair shop replaced the front control arm. updated 6/19/2006 - the consumer feels that the rubber of the bushing poorly bonds to the steel outer ring causing failure. *nm

The head light switches are defective and have been burning up. some have stuck on and melted the switches. not allowing the head lights to work or going out while driving down the road at night. the contact areas where the power is transfered to the fog or head lights are to small of a area. and are burning up or melting. the dealerships have been replacing a lot of them. but even some of the new ones they have installed are defective right out of the box and do not work. *nm

I have a problem with the rear bumper of my car and also the door pillars. first off, all of the older pts that i have seen have problems with both of these items. the bumper has some sort of discoloration problem on the edges of the bumper. it looks like there may have been some tape (from the factory?) that has discolored the bumpers on these vehicles. also, the door pillar that are factory black get this terrible staining. it looks as if they are water spotted, but it is just a defect in the paint on the pillars. i see it on every cruiser i see. i has to buy chrome covers to make my car look presentable. i can't believe that there has not been a recall to replace these eyesores (and not on my dime, like i did). *jb

I have had two blow outs within the last year and i wake up to flat tires in the morning on a regular basis. i have had to check the tire pressure in my car at least twice weekly (and most times at least one tire will have shockingly low pressure). i have had all of my tires replaced within the last year or so with no relief to my problem. i thought that maybe it was me until i read all the other complaints and realized that this was a product problem. this is total safety hazard for anyone driving a pt cruiser with these rims. does someone have to die for someone to listen and recall these (potentially) deadly rims? *jb

2 years into my ownership, my car began having failures, my egr valve had to be replaced 3 times, the "brain" in the car was replaced, the battery was replaced,the fog lights started going on and staying on, the car broke down on the highway and overheated, thermostat had to be replaced, pipe carrying circulating coolant rusted completely out, o ring was replaced,manual transmission began being difficult to shift, fluid leaks,low fluid, plug is recommended to be replaced.*jb

Defective fog light switch suddenly fails & goes off and on at random running down the battery totally. this electrical problem results in owner being stranded and destroying the battery. dealer also does not stock part & says it will be a week to get parts. fog lamp is wired direct, therefore fuse slot shown in owners manual is not operational so fuse cannot be removed to temporarily correct problem. now waiting for parts!! *jb

At 62,000 miles, there was a clunking noise in my 2001 pt cruiser. when taken to the dealer was told the lower control arms/bushings were bad. of course, my car was over warranty. quote $750.00 + tax. had replaced, now at 75,000 miles 1 year later, took my pt in for annual inspection.....yep, lower control arms/bushings bad & needing replaced again. quote this time $582.00 + tax. should this be a yearly thing? i have normal driving on paved roads...avoid pot holes. this needs to be addressed! i love my cruiser by a trade in might be happening!*jb

Dt*: the contact owns a touriva #22-130 wal convertible child seat manufactured by cosco juvenile on june 29, 2005. the shield assembly dislodged from the child seat shell. the shield assembly was loose prior to the complete dislodgement. the manufacturer has not been alerted.

My 2001 pt cruiser which i purchased in august 2005 suddenly caught fire on deember 27, 2005 and was a total loss. there had been a recall for sudden engine fires caused by leaking power steering fluid. the dealer where i purchased the car, reseda dodge in reseda, ca, had records showing the recall repair had been done, but my insurance company, state farm, found the the fire was caused by leaking power steering fluid. chrysler denied my claim with no reason given. *nm

2001- pt cruiser -emergency brake disengaged while running. was in neutral (manual transmission) and on an incline. the car drifted backwards down the drive and into a utility pole across the road. on other instances the brake handle was pulled upward and immediately disengaged (like a broken spring). when parking brake was reapplied, it worked properly? also, the car has drifted backwards on steeper inclines while in gear. at this point the latest incident was reported, but no action was taken thus far. *nm

2001 pt cruiser had been at dealership for repair because fog lights would not turn off, thus killing the battery. service dept. reported that car "overheated" during repair and they replaced fan. three weeks later, car engine oil light sounded suddenly on freeway with no prior warning and then the engine failed. dealership refusing repairs under extended warranty due to alleged "sludge" in the engine they say was caused by poor maintenance when i know this to be untrue. *jb

Dt*: the consumer stated while driving at 40 mph on normal road conditions, the engine stalled. the engine over-heated and the warning light did not illuminate. the vehicle was towed to the dealership who determined the cylinder head was broken and the engine was damaged beyond repair. the dealer would not honor the one year warranty on the vehicle; they told the consumer the damage was due to owners negligence. *jb

On my 2001 pt cruiser both lower control arm bushings pulled loose from the arm which caused the car to shake violently while my wife was driving. when i took the car into the repair shop they brought me out to the car and showed me the damage to the control arms. oddly enough there was another pt cruiser in the next bay that had the very same problem. the owner of the repair shop told me he had put control arms on at least 40 pt cruisers in the past year. i asked him if he had notified chrysler about the problem and he said he had contacted them on behalf of his customers and chrysler insisted that there was no problems with the lower control arms. my pt cruiser has 60,000 miles on it and the car that was next to mine had 34,000 miles on the odometer. as a result of this condition the front tires on my car were destroyed due to violent shaking of the front end. my wife thought the tires were falling off. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle shook and became hard to control. upon inspection the contact observed a loss of pressure to the rear passenger tire caused by corrosion on the wheel rim. this vehicle is driven in an area that typically uses road salt. the vehicle has not been taken to a repair shop.

2001 pt cruiser, 69000 miles. original owner and rims. rims, according to dealer are rusted inside and will no longer hold air. chrysler doesn't seem to think this is abnormal for a 4 year old car and would do nothing for me. i think they are defective and should be recalled as i have heard/read on the web about other pt cruisers having the same exact problem. *jb

Front control arm bushings were replaced in feb of 2005 3 months they were replaced again and now november the noise that caused them to be replaced is present again. 2001 pt cruiser touring 60,000 miles. *jb

Dt: the contact states there is a nhtsa recall campaign 04v268000 concerning the steering hydraulic power assist hoses, piping, and connections. this vehicle experienced the same symptoms as indicated in the recall, but this affected the brake fluid lines as well. she repaired the vehicle at her own expense prior to receiving the recall letter. *ak

(2) timing belt failure at 89,400 miles where schedule "b" maintenance schedule lists the part to be replaced at 120,000 miles and early failure is not covered under warranty. leaving my wife and stepson stranded on the freeway with no shoulder to safely remove the vehicle from the flow of traffic. (3) defective part is to be replaced.*jb

Dt: the consumer's wife was driving when the vehicle began to pull hard to the left. she then decided to take the vehicle to a garage for an inspection. this happened without any previous incidents. the mechanic discovered that both lower control arms failed. the mechanic suggested that she should not drive the vehicle until it was repaired. the mechanic noted that this was a common problem in these vehicles. the mechanic replaced both lower control arms. there have been no further problems since the replacement. *ak (11/23/05) *sc

August 2005 my self and my family were taking a short trip out of town about 200 miles. at the half way point we pulled in to a gas station for some refreshments i waited in the car when i noticed smoke coming from my steering column up through the flasher button. we realized it was the wiring from my fog lamps only because that was the only thing that no longer work. the lamps were not in use at the time. not really sure why the wiring caught fire. *jb

Dt: the contact stated that the tires were losing air pressure. the fluctuation in the change of weather determined which tire was affected. a local tire dealer said the problem was the design of the wheels. the wheels were chrome over aluminum. the wheel build up with corrosion and prevented the sealing of the tire. the service dealer has not inspected the vehicle to determine the exact cause of the problem. *ak

I have a 2001 pt cruiser with chrome rims and less than 60,000 miles on it. these came on the car when i purchased it. the rims are peeling which is leading to air being lost in the tires. my tire dealer tells me this is common with these rims and many chrysler dealers are replacing the rims at no cost to the consumer. chrysler knows this is happening and it is a hazard. it is unreasonable of chrysler to expect the consumer to have to replace rims on a car that was well taken care of. *jb

My fog lights would not turn off and could turn on even when the car is not running. my car battery drained a couple of times, and i had to obtain a jump to start my car. called car dealer, and they pulled the fuse to the fog lights and said there is a short in the multi-function switch and it would need to be replaced. called chrysler, and i am out of warranty and they will offer no assistance unless there is a recall on this issue. i see there is a prior complaint dated august 2, 2005 for the same issue on three other pt cruisers and my car dealer states they have had to replace the switch on several pt cruisers. i have also read about this problem on some online forums. i will keep my service records in case of recall per chrysler. *jb

2001 chrysler pt cruiser, original owner, 36,633 miles. driving in heavy traffic on hwy 280 east in birmingham, al april 28, 2005 when transmission froze up. was able to move to shoulder to avoid accident. had vehicle towed to shop. transmission control module had gone out - vehicle was one year and 633 miles out of warranty. repair costs - $575. chrysler corporation refused to provide any warranty assistance. driving on hwy 280 east in birmingham, al on september 14, 2005 when transmission went out again. mileage at this occurrance 40,827. had vehicle towed to shop. transmission control module had gone out - again. part was replaced at no charge but had to pay labor charges plus cost of rental vehicle for 1 week. total cost this round - $500 including rental car.

Lower control arm bushings need replacement already at 29000 miles, on 2001 pt cruiser. this premature failure is a safety risk and appears to be common on this vehicle (admitted by dealer), yet is out of warranty. should warrant a recall notice and free repair.

Dt: the contact owns a 2001 chrysler pt cruiser. he indicated that the air bag light was on and the horn did not work. he noticed this on 9-5-05 as he was backing out of his driveway, he heard a clicking noise, and then the air bag light came on .he had not taken vehicle to a dealer yet. there were other complaints of the same exact problem filed on the nhtsa website. the contact indicated vehicle had not been in an accident of any kind. there was recall 04v480000 on certain 1998 dodge vehicles pertaining to the clockspring that the consumer thought may relate to his problem. *ak the dealer would not cover the cost of the part or labor. *nm

Dealership found cause of noise in steering. problem was caused by lower front control arm bushings being broken (not worn). further failure could lead to loss of control of vehicle. *jb

On saturday aug 13, 2005 my wife and i had a flat on our 2001 pt cruiser on the right front. on monday aug 15, 2005 i took the tire and had it fixed. the problem was that the chrome on the inside of the rim was peeling and the tire was not adhering to the rim. on tuesday aug 16th i took the car into the chrysler dealer and had them look at the problem. they confirmed what the tire dealer said. i talked with the garage advisor and he stated that i was not the first person with this problem. the solution was to buy new rims. i called the chrysler hot line number 1-800-992-1997 and spoke with customer service reps crystal and carol and finally carol said that the 3 year warranty was up. my problem with this is that the rims are starting to peel on the early additions of the make of car and that it has taken 5 years or so for this to be noticed. my flat tire came on i-465 in indianapolis at 60 mph. there was no accident, but if this has happened on more than one car in indianapolis, what about the nation. i have a problem with a rim that doesn't last for more than 5 years and its impossible to detect until it happens. i asked carol, at chrysler, on what it took to start a recall or have someone look into it and all she said was that she would put it on file. mike, at my dealers, said that all my rims were starting to do this. there is something wrong with these rims. my car has 42,000 miles on it. most of these type of cars are owned by older people and they might not be able to handled a blow out. *jb

Dt: 2001 chrysler pt cruiser. the consumer states her 6 year old daughter went to get something out of the vehicle and knocked it out of gear. the vehicle then rolled into the street. the underside of the vehicle was pushed in. the vehicle ran into a house. upon impact, the air bags did not deploy. the vehicle was going about 30 mph when this happened. the consumer lived on a hill, and while it was rolling , the child put it back in park. the vehicle continued to roll. there were no keys in the ignition when this occurred. there i a police report was taken, case #05-029614, deputy boeltz with yazapi county police department.*ak

Dt: consumer's vehicle was involved in a minor accident. was in a small accident. took vehicle to a repair shop, a repair shop, and they referred him to a dealership. they said that the bushing has been forced out of the control arm. previously, the steering wheel shimmied and rattled back and forth. the consumer had the accident repair work done. but not the bushing and the control arm. this problem occurred for about a year. *ak

1) our fog lights had been going on and off intermittently for a couple of weeks. 2) my wife was driving down a local street coming home when smoke started billowing out from under the steering column, filling the car with smoke. she happened to be at the local dealership (it's on the way home from her work) and pulled in their parking lot. the car was left at the dealership. the problem was diagnosed as being a shorted fog light switch. instead of a fuse blowing the wire harness acted as a fusible link and began melting down. we are now responsible for the replacement of a $2500.00 wire harness. i asked the service writer why a fuse had not blown and he told me that the circuit is protected by a forty (40) amp fuse. being an electrician i know that a forty amp fuse or breaker protects an electric range oven and is on 8 awg wire. to repair the fault, we have to buy the harness which chrysler will cut off the connector that melted down and will splice on the new one. all of the controls on the steering column pass through this harness which melted down and the wires are obviously not protected by fuses. if they were a fuse should blow with a short. our vehicle has had 4 warranties and 3 recalls since we have owned it. the car is still not fixed after a week and a half. *nm

Dt: the multi-functional switch lever on the left hand side of the steering wheel has been replaced three times. the lights will suddenly go out. the first two times, one could jiggle the lever and the lights would come back on. the last time the lights went off on a road with no shoulders, and consumer pulled up on the hazard lights so she would not get hit. this was on a 2001 chrysler pt cruiser. the dealership stated this occurred due to a short in a multi-function switch. this switch has been replaced twice and broken three times.*ak updated 2/21/2006 - *nm

Wheels on car are splitting. physically separating. tires consistently lose air. people at dealership have told us that this is a known problem, and they have replaced on other cars. service mgr stated that " he wouldn't be surprised if there was a recall on wheels. the condition has caused premature tire wear and flats. i am concerned regarding wheels actually separating totally while on road and causing an accident. chrysler and dealer both say they will not replace. *jb

I was driving and the front part of the car broke down i couldn't keep on the shift couldn't move to park, drive or reverse. i had to call a tow truck the part an axel. i paid a mecanic. but the bushings are also messed up they are too expensive here in puerto rico it costs me more thatn 1,000 dollars to fix it and i've been driving like that since the day i bought the car. the dealer told that the it didn't have garanteen. know another problem there is in febreuary i took my car to the mecanic because the cargot hot they change the water bomb, and it continue to rise the temperature, then the temostat and they even flushed the radiator,and they put a computer if it can ditect where is the problem.they just don't know what is the problem and they are one of the best radiator mecanics in bayamon puerto rico. whe n i drive around theres no problem as long i i am not in a traffic jam for more than half an hour and when i go visit my parents to the countryside going up the hills that after ten minutes on the hill the temperarure starts to rise both times that i have visited my parents for the past five months ago i can't go. the mecanics can't figure out the problem. can you give me any suggetions e-mail me back and i can give it to the mecanics . about the bushings i've asked a person on the streets that have a 2003 pt cruiser and she said that these cars have that problem.

Dt: consumer owned three 2001 chrysler pt cruisers. each of the vehicles had problems with the fog lights and turn signal light switch , which was replaced free of charge when one vehicle was out of warranty and the fog lights and headlights stayed on and would not go off. the second and third cruisers fog lights would not go off, consume r removed the fuse. there was a flaw in the design of the pt cruisers headlight switch, which would run down the battery. the switch should be replaced at no charge to the consumer. also, there should a be a redesigned switch, and a full recall/replacement after the switch was redesigned. in order to have two pt cruisers pass va state inspection consumer removed fog lights bulbs, socket and wiring. *ak

All 4 chrome rims leak air. have tried to repair but still no luck. told by tire dealer the rims on these vehicles are junk. dealer will not stand behind product. *jb

Dt: the consumer stated the front end of the vehicle did not respond to a quick turn in either direction. the consumer took the vehicle the to dealership for an inspection and discovered that both front tie rod ends were worn and would not pass inspection. in addition the control arm had lost a bushing which created a knocking noise. the consumer has replaced tie rod ends as well as the control arm bushing. dealer noted this was a common problem with the pt cruiser and this was a design flaw. the consumer contacted the manufacturer and they denied there was an issue with the pt cruiser and that all cars have grease fittings called "zirks" since repairs no problems as of yet. this failure occurred 32,191 miles. chrysler did say they would reimburse $150 for the tie rods ends but that was all. *jb

On march 14, 2005 my vehicle was stalling and actually hopping. i was unable to drive the car and had it towed to a service facility that i have used over the past 10 years. the mechanic determined the wiring harness in my 2001 chrysler pt cruiser was defective at 56000 miles. he notified me that the wires inside the harness were frayed and several bare wires were actually touching, creating a severe safecty hazard, i instructed him to replace the defective part. i did not know that the wiring harness was a warranty covered part because the manual supplied me from daimler chrysler does not contain information about the wiring harness. i subsequently found out it was a warranty covered item under the california emissions warranty. chrylser has refused to reimburse me for a part that was defective because i had it replaced at an a.s.e. certified facility by a master technician. i have contacted chrysler regarding this as a safety issue and they have refused to address this issue with me. the repair facility that i took my car to has kept the wiring harness because they believe the part was defective. i want to know if you have had other complaints about the wiring harnesses in pt cruisers. the wiring harness is not a moving part and without any outside influences such as moisture or excessive engine movement, which i did not have, the wiring harness should never have frayed and bare electrical wires. please provide me with any information that i can use to convince the manufacturer of my car that a defective and potentially dangerous part was sold to me.

Dt: the clutch cable assemblies, the bushings that are suppose to be around the cable were never put on vehicle. the vehicle was not able to put into gear . took the vehicle to the mechanic and was told both cables had to be replaced because all bushings were missing. the part the mechanic received from chrysler had the bushings on it. the problem started last year, but she did not know the bushings were missing until the vehicle would not shift in the beginning of june. at that time, the sensor light for the engine check came on. that was because the power steering sensor had to be replaced.*ak

Dt: consumer states 2001 pt cruiser acted like it was going to stall and then the yellow warning light came on. he took the vehicle to the service department and they fixed the power steering, which was part of nhtsa recall 04v268000. consumer was told the light would still be on and the problem would still occur. to find out why this is happened consumer had to pay to have diagnostic work done. this started day before yesterday, on july 5, 2005. it did not matter what speed the vehicle was going.*ak

Transmission failure after only 42000 miles

Dt the brake lines collasped and has not allowed the brake fluid to go through. has to grip steering wheel and pull over in order to get the vehicle to stop shaking. standing next to the brakes consumer can feel the heat coming off the brakes. this happened in mar 2005. tuffy fixed it, they said had other pt cruiser's in for the same defect. the second time this happened it almost caused an accident when hitting the brakes it shook badly. it was uncontrolable at that point. *ak

Complete replacement of the cooling system in my car. at the time i only had 39000 miles on it. i just want to know if you think my manufacturer warranty from chrysler should have covered this repair. my warranty had expired at 36000 miles, even though i had only owned the car for 2 1/2 years. i have never had a radiator replacement on a car with so few miles. i am asking this question because i have had several very expensive and unusual parts replacement recently on this car., ie the main engine wiring harness and the power control module. i had already had the powersteering unit replaced and the fuel pump replaced as part of a dealer recall. this seems like a lot of expensive major repairs for a car with less that is less than 5 years old.

I own a 2001 pt cruiser. starting in 2003 i began to experience loss of air in the front passenger tire. i just returned from the garage where i have the car serviced. the mechanics showed me the inside of the wheel which has oxidized. they attempted to seal the bead with "goop," but advise that i will need to replace the entire wheel in the near future. they state further that they see this problem on jeeps and other chrysler products as well.

I was travelling east on the 91 freeway in los angeles at about 5:10pm on wednesday, june 22, 2005. i was in very heavy traffic travelling at about 35 miles per hour when the (automatic) transmission disengaged. there was no unusual noise preceding the disengagement except that the engine revved, of course. fortunately, i was in the right-hand lane approaching the bellflower offramp. the car rolled to a stop near the end of the offramp in the middle of traffic. i had to have the car towed to donavee chrysler in placentia, ca. we took delivery of the car on may 27, 2001 and it only has 37,230 miles on it. the service department told me that the car was out of warranty and that it would cost $850 just to remove the transmission before they could even begin to determine what went wrong - parts and repairs will be extra.

Bell crank connecting watts links. bushing wears out before 40k miles creating loud clunking noises at rear suspension. and this suspension is highlighted on chrysler web site as a feature, not a failure. repair is $315.05, part available. should at least be under warranty. many failures noted on owner forums. also own second pt at 30k miles and it is showing (hearing) symptoms.

My 2001 pt cruiser has been diagnosed with a leak in the steering gear which can only be observed by checking the boot which holds the steering fluid. this vehicle has 41,000 miles and has never been driven hard. it is garage housed and i do not feel this probelm should have happened with the miles and the use it has been subjected to. i have heard that the pt cruiser has had this complaint lodged a number of times so i feel it may be a defect which should be addressed by chrysler corp.

Consumer states: 1st time heard a crushing noise when he would turn the wheel. the dealer replaced the steering column, then in july 2003 heard a noise sound like rubber on rubber. the steering rack and pinion assembly was replaced. in july 2004 the noise was back and the steering rack and pinion was replaced again. now, the noise is back and they are going to replace the rack and pinion again. *ak *jb

In october, 2004 the fog light indicator would stay on, even though the fogs lights were not on. then the fog lights stopped working all together. may, 2005, the fogs lights came back on by themselves, even though no lights were on and the car was turned off. i had the light stalk replaced by the dealer on the extended warranty.

Severe clunking noised under the front end of my 2001 pt cruiser at 60k miles. dealer notified that both lower control arm (bushings) had failed and needed to be replaced. luckily, i purchased an extended warranty so the out of pocket cost was $100 deductible and $70 front end alignment. why should control arm bushings fail so early? i believe this is a safety issue and since i found many pt owners on the web experiencing similiar suspension failures, daimler chrysler should cover all the cost.

Consumer bought car that had not been thoroughly inspected. after two weeks a noise in both the back and front of the car was heard. the consumer took the vehicle back to the dealership, placed a support because brake pads were gone, metal on metal. the motor mount broke, needed rotors/spark plugs, and tune up along with a pvc valve. needed to be fixed, but dealer refused to fix anything.*ak

Gas fumes were coming in from the vents while driving. driver noticed that the vehicle was driving roughly. then, it stalled. driver was unable to restart vehicle, and it was towed to the dealer for inspection. mechanic determined that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. *ak

For the last few months, i had been having problems getting with my tires being flat when i got up in the mornings. after having all of the tires checked for flats, it would still do this off and on during the winter. finally, i took it to a firestone shop and they said my tires were fine, but the chrome was peeling off the wheels causing the slow leaks. i took it to the dealer and my 36k/3y had expired (by 1/2 year, as i only have 30k miles) and they said there was nothing that they would do, i'm going to call chrysler and lodge a formal complaint, now that i see i"m not the only one with this problem.*ak

Steering fluid leaked in my car for its life--no dealer ever identified this as the problem when complaining about rough steering noise and other issues. discovered the level of fluid was down when an employee added fluid after hearing the noise ,and the noise went away. the constant leak has damaged the rack and pinion--i was told this by a service dealer and an independent mechanic. crysler will not replace r&p. when having the recall done dealer said it was not covered (r&p)--just the hose--dealer claimed to have done recall work but a neighbor who is a mechanic inspected the car the next day and said the work was not done---old hose still there--leak still active. crysler not responsive to this safety issue. *ak

The seat belt does not retract back to normal position, and is not providing protection to the driver in case of an accident. manufacturer was contacted by consumer, and informed consumer that the seat belt was not covered by warranty.*ak

I own a 2001 chrysler pt cruiser with 105k miles. the air bag light remain on when the car is running, also the horn does not work or the cruise control. i researched the problem and have determined the problem to be a defective clockspring. after some research on the internet i have found that chrysler has recalled 1.2million 1998 - 2000 minivans for this same problem. the pt cruiser has no recall but should since it is classified as a van. *jb

I have been experiencing shifter problems, that has made it occasionally difficult to shift into or it would drop out of reverse gear. while doing a battery check i noticed the shift linkage appeared to be lying on top of the transaxle. upon further investigation after removing the air box i noticed that indeed linkage was lying there without being secured in position. there appears to be an indentation for retainer clip, there was no evidence that one had been used or if it had it came off early on. i realize more automatic pt?s were sold than manual 5-speed units. i also realize that it is possible that only my vehicle may have this problem. although i believe that to be unlikely, therefore i am filing a formal complaint, based on the initial response i received from the local dealership service and parts department. i believe continued uncontrolled wear could result in a mishap should the linkage come off while driving. had the retainer clip been installed it would have prevented this type wear with less than 70,000 miles. *ak

Tire looses air due to defect of wheels. manufacturer agreed to replace both rear wheels. now she is experiencing same problem with both front wheels. when contacting manufacturer, they would not accommodate to replace rear wheels. this is for a 2001 chrysler pt cruiser. *nm......*ak

Per instructions in owner's manual, i took my 2001 pt cruiser with 51,700 miles into the courtesy chrysler/jeep dealership in rockville, md after the airbag indicator light on the dashboard panel began intermittently lighting up when taking turns. after 3 days, the service advisor called to inform me that the light was going on because the airbag had failed. the car has not been in an accident, nor has it been modified. the charge to replace the failed airbag is $1,300. the service advisor said he had no idea what would cause the airbag to fail if was not in an accidient and had not been modified. i called chrysler customer service and was told that there was nothing they could do to help me and that i would have to work it out with the dealer. *ak

Vehicle experienced a problem with the seat belt on the driver side. the belt will not come out of the retractor. it will not release or allow the driver to wear the seat belt. owner contacted the dealer, who stated they could check for the defect if the owner would pay a fee for the diagnostics to determine why the belt will not operate. *ak

A knocking noise was coming from the front of the vehicle. the consumer was able drive to the dealer. the mechanic informed the driver that the left and right upper ball joints needed to be replaced. please fill in additional information. *jb *nm

The bushings where the lower control arms are fastened to the crossmember mine, metal on metal concerning steering/suspension. *bf the consumers lower control arms were totally disintegrated. *sc *jb

For weeks (or months) prior to failure, i experienced occasional instances of fog lights activating upon engaging the right turn signal. fog lights would go off after completing turn and signal automatically disengaged. it is noted that i virtually never make use of the fog lights. on day of failure, there was a pronounced odor about 1 hour into a long trip (like nylon rope burning). fog lights activated and could not be turned off regardless of controller setting for other lights. fog lights would not turn off even after car was shut down and key removed. after brief rest stop (during which manual was researched to learn what fuse must be pulled to avoid draining battery), returned to car to find that lights had gone off on their own. neither fog lights nor high beams worked any longer, once car was started. the next day, upon disassembly of steering column housing and removal of multi-function switch, i discovered that an internal, spring-loaded contact on the back of the multi-function switch, located near the steering column, had melted/fused. dealer advised that multi-function switch must be replaced (at cost of ~$103 for part). self-repaired, with no further problems (yet). old part has been saved. thankful that plastic switch did not actually catch fire, and that main lights (low beams only) remained operational during remainder of long, night-time trip. *nm

I was driving down i-84 at 65 mph when the transmission locked up, losing all gears except 1st. this caused the car to decelerate rapidly and the car to veer to the right. i managed to get to the off-ramp without incident. the car now needs the transmission rebuilt with only 69,000 miles on it. *jb

The lower control arm bushings are separating from the rubber. this can cause loss of vehicle control, rattles, severe front end vibration. some of the members of the national pt cruiser club have had this occur as low as 5000 miles. currently my pt has 75.000 miles and the problem is occurring. i am a 25 year employee of the auto industry. and there is no way that these type of bushings should be having this separation problem. a recall and manditory repair is in order, before a owner has a vehicle accident due to the vehicle loosing steering control.*ak

Middle rear saftey belt failed. the rigt rear seat was folded forward. the seat belt jammed and would not allow the seat to be raised. the seat had to be disassembled and a new seat belt installed. this safety device was not covered under warranty.*ak

The rear bushing on both sides were separated where the rubber bushing were torn apart completely causing the steering to drift side to side. *bf *sc *jb

Cd player read error 1 month after the warranty was up, dealer said it was dead and it would cost $300 to replace combination stereo/cd. excuse me but a cd player should last longer than 3 years. an american motor dealers wonder why we do not want to buy their products. *jb

The chrome on 3 of the wheel rims peeled, chrysler replaced all 3 rims. the 4th rim started to peel at the stem of the tire which made the tire leak air. *tc *nm

On 12-17-04 my tires were rotated and balanced at discount tire co. this resulted in vibration at low speeds in my steering wheel. discount rechecked the balancing, but found nothing wrong. several days later i moved the l/f tire to the rear to see if the wheel might be the problem - the vibration stopped! on 12-23-04 i stopped by the local goodyear dealer to discuss the problem with them. it was made clear that all i wanted was a tire safety inspection at no expense to me. they said they would be happy to inspect the tire at no cost and the next morning i dropped the car off at 7am (12-24-04). a couple of hours later goodyear called and said the l/r tire was bad (tread separation) , that they had replaced it with a new tire, and it was ready to be picked up. no mention was made of any cost involved, and i assumed it was a free replacement (27k miles). went to pick up the car and was told there was a pro-rated charge of almost $80 for the replacement tire (goodyear eagle ls p205/55r16). i told them there was to be no expense to me for the tire inspection - that if they found the tire bad i was going to have a complete set put on at pepboys. they put my old tire back on and agreed there was no charge for anything.*ak

2001 pt cruiser has airbag light that keeps coming on intermittently. also, the associated "ding" sound comes on at the same time. dealer charged $90 to tell me the driver's side airbag had "failed". (note: this car has never been in an accident and only has 34000 miles on it.) dealer wants $500 to repair the "failed airbag". coincidence that this same problem happened on late 90's grand caravans. sounds like i have exactly the same problem they had - but no recall to correct the situation. help! *nm

Factory installed sun roof shattered while driving, causing large chunks of glass to enter the vehicle (possibly faulty safety glass) and caused scratches to 3 individuals including a 20 month old boy. *ak

While driving 70 mph steering failed. as a result, vehicle lost power steering. the dealer had to replace the power steering pump. *ak

The brake pads failed at 10,000 miles. the brake light illuminated approximately 200 miles later after having them checked there was a loud moaning noise. found that the pads had cut into the rotors, and the rotor dished was bent very badly. now at 15000 miles the vehicle needed new brake pads and rotors.*ak

Pt cruiser 2001 (car) will continue to run with key out of ignition. safety issue: car cannot be stopped occurrences: has happened approximately 6+ times since problem initially brought to dealers attention in 2002 chrysler support: essentially not responding with correct solutions over the last 24 months to local dealer who cannot resolve this defect dealer has attempted to repair this on 3 occasions with different solutions - however problem continues to occur dealer gave me specific instructions that if car did this again, i could stop it by removing fuse #11 - after a set of recent sequential failures on 12/4/04 where i used this technique until i could contact the dealer on monday morning; vehicle battery died and needed to be re-started; responding mechanic advise me the procedure for removing fuse #11 was dangerous and could cause arcing in the car's electrical system and possibly a fire and complete destruction of the onboard computer. most recent event occurred on 12/4/04 with key out of ignition, car still running.- utilized dealer technique of removing fuse #11, battery died. *jb

At 24,226 miles, i noticed a loud noise coming from under the hood. i was told that the power steering pump had to be replaced. this again has happened 4 more times since dec 11, 2002. each time the power steering pump had to be replaced, two rack and pinion steering assemblies, and all of the hoses. the last two times, my extended warranty service has had to pay for the repairs as chrysler tells me that since i have the warranty, they will not except responsibility even though this has been happening over and over again since 24,000 miles. i am very disappointed in the fact that chrysler will not stand behind their products. these 5 failures have all happened in less than 31,000 miles. i am very afraid to drive the car now as i have been lucky to catch the problem before the power steering pump fails completely.*ak

Some of the illuminating lights in the dashboard for speed and rpm and fuel have gone out. i had mentioned this to chrysler when my transmission died and they did nothing. isn't them another e-mail in september and they still have done nothing. i feel this is a safety hazard if you can not read your gauges at night time without taking your attention away from the road to turn on the interior light to see the gauges. *jb

Power steering fluid leaked. *bf prior to receiving the power steering hose safety recall, the consumer had the power steering pump, pulley and access belt replaced after she noticed fluid leaking. after receiving the recall notice, she felt that all the replaced parts didn't need to replaced - just the power steering hose. the consumer wrote a letter to chrysler and requested reimbursement for part of the repair cost which totalled $503.24. *ph campaign id number : 04v268000 recall date : jun 02, 2004 component: steering:hydraulic power assist:hose *tc *jb

While driving consumer lost power steering. consumer pulled over and had the vehicle towed. dealer informed the consumer that the problem pertained to power steering pump fluid leakage. the problem was not resolved. *ak

My 2001 pt cruiser has a problem with chrome peeling from the rims. on 5/24/04 chrysler replaced 3 of the rims because they told us the chrome was peeling because their chrome was to blame. we have a problem with the 4th rim but now the chrome is peeling around the stem which inturn is making the air leak and now chrysler has said they will not fix the problem because now it is an environmental issue. on 11/22/04 while driving i lost air pressure and the car pulled from me, i had control because i was only going 20 mph. i have done research and chrysler has replaced some rims and not others, there is a whole web site of people who are having the same problem and chrysler doesn't want to help or hear anything more. my car is still under warranty and i feel this is a safety issue and could become a huge problem. *jb

The rims are losing air. they have been repaired 3 times by tire manufacturer for this problem. the inside of the crone wheels, where the tread beads sit on the rim, have pits and blisters in the crone. dealership attempted to put a sealer in to correct the problem, but it didn't work. this has been a common problem with these wheels.*ak *tc

Prior to receiving a recall notice on the power steering hose. on 2 separate occasions i had my oil changed the mechanic said he topped off my power steering fliud it was a little low. when i received the recall notice i arranged to have the hose repaired (serra crysler,jeep etc). i was told by the mechanic that the hose was damaged and must be replaced. the check engine light came on after diagonistic checking i was told that the power steering switch was bad and needed replacing. this cost $68.00. my question is if the powering steering assist hose,piping & connections are bad, did that contribute to the power steering switch going bad? the manager jay jordon said that one had nothing to do with the other. so i paid for the switch & labor. could someone let me know if this is a contributing factor so others will be prepared to pay the extra cost.

Over the last year i have had to spend over $900 in corrosion related repairs to my 2001 chrysler pt cruiser. i spent $124 to replace wheel hub covers, $150 to replace a corroded bell housing, and $650 to replace bushings which are coming out of the lower control arms. all of these items are related to design defects in the pt cruiser.*ak

While driving the car and the power steering unit failed. took vehicle to dealer and was told they could not find a problem. approximately 2 months later problem recurred, returned to dealer and was told the car was no longer under warranty, unit needed replacement. took to different repair shop, was told that unit was shot, had a grey substance in steering fluid that appeared to be some form of leak sealant, destroyed seals in unit, had to replace unit at my own cost,($400). dealer denied adding anything other than steering fluid. was informed that there was a recall by another pt owner, never informed by chrysler. dealer said it was no longer they're responsibility because third party repair was made. no response from chrysler.*ak

My 2001 chrysler pt cruiser horn does not work all the time. when the radio display is on, the horn works , when the radio display goes out, the horn will not honk. there has been 3 times when we needed it to work and it would not. the local chrysler dealer changed out the radio and said they fixed a horn wire, but 2 weeks later it was broken again. *jb

While driving 25 mph the power steering failed without warning. the driver was able to maintain control and pulled off the road. the dealer states the rack and pinion, the power steering pump and hoses needed to be replaced. the cause has yet to be determined. please provide additional information. *jb

I have a 2001 pt cruiser. i had an incident in wisconsin 11/24/03 where my steering wheel locked and could not be unlocked, thus i could not start the car. i had it towed to the dealership the next day. they found nothing wrong. on 2/26/04 the steering column was clicking. i took it to a dealership in st. louis. the steering column had to be replaced a bearing went out at 38913 miles. then 8/31/04 i had just pulled into my subdivision after a long trip and the car would rev but did not accelerate. i took it to a local garage due to the mechanics strike at the dealerships. the front pump of the transmission is out and needs a new transmission at 47066 miles. in addition, neither of the two dealerships mentioned a fuel system recalls the were issued in 8/02 and not completed on my car.*ak

Deterioration was found around and underneath the driver's wheels on all four tires. driver's tire blew out due to the wheel corrosion. consumer drove the vehicle to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic told consumer that this problem could not be duplicated. consumer informed mechanic that this problem occurred more than once, and had not been resolved. *ak

While driving 60 mph, the transmission shifted out of gear and locked up without warning. the consumer managed to pull over and had the vehicle towed. please provide additional details. *jb

Gas gauge malfunctioned. it indicated that there was no gas in the tank, even though the tank was full. dealership was notified. *ak the fuel sending unit failed. the sending unit provided false fuel level infomation to the fuel gauge on the dash. *nm.

I have a 2001 pt cruiser with 46,000 miles on it, i have to replace lower control arms on both sides because the bushings have seperated from the bubber. i have had cars with over 200,000 miles on them and never had this problem. i feel that a recall is in order before some one gets hurt due to loss of steering control.*ak

I had my 2001 chrysler pt cruiser in the shop for the mandatory pennsylvania state safety inspection. the mechanics informed the that both of the lower control arms were bad in the vehicle. this vehicle has only 47,000 original miles on the car. i asked if this was a common occurance and was told that they have replaced these control arms on 9 vehicles so far. they stated they called the local chrysler dealership and the service department told them that they replace about 30 of these per month. i was told there have been no recalls issued for this item.*ak

Brakes: noticed squealing and lots of brake dust (6/04). had to replace pads and rotors. after repair, passenger front brake still squeeled. took back, rotor replaced again. my front right break still squeels and both front brakes are shooting off much break dust. this is very frustrating. i would think after a month the semi-metalic breaks would have been broken in by now.*ak

Rear suspension made up of many links with grommets inside them that wear out prematurely and make a loud clanging banging noise. i thought it was my spare tire w/o air and did not get to the dealer before the 36,000 mile warranty expired (plus this dealer does not really repair things). local mechanic got ahold of local dealer who is very familiar with this very frequent problem. either it is a poor design or the supplier blew it but it is goddawful and i am fearful of failure.*ak

The lower control arm bushings are failing on the pt cruisers. this is causing a loss of control of the vehicle if they get bad enough. the lower control arm bushing is separating and allowing the control arm to drop down and hit the frame. the occurrence is happening to many of my car club members and members of the pt forum i frequent. and a lot of them still have low mileage on the vehicles. this is a control problem and poorly designed (bad rubber) design that needs to be addressed as soon as possible. we have managed to catch the fuel line rub thru problem and dc has taken care of that. but now this problem needs to be addressed also.. this isn't just concening the usa models but also the models in other countries. ak

The tires were losing air pressure on a daily basis which caused the tires to fill up with water. consumer took the vehicle to the goodyear for inspection, and mechanic determined that the rims corroded, causing the tires to lose pressure. *ak

Electric failures: 1) 4/29/03 placed key in ignition; alarm sounds and warning lights on dashboard, car would not start. towed to dealer. replaced ignition switch. 2) 11/15/03 drove car to work; placed car in park, turn key in off position and removed key from ignition, car engine remained running. placed key back into ignition turn to on position, then back to off position, engine turned off. called dealer and was told nothing could be done about this unless i could make it happen again. 3) 6/3/04 unlocked car, got in driver's seat and warning lights on dash were on (engine, oil, air bag, seat belt and alarm), turned key to on position, car started then cut out. turn key to off position, then back to on position. engine wouldn't start. all warning lights stayed on. *jb

Parking brake occasionally fails to engage. it also has disengaged by itself. once it rolled away and knocked over a sign. dealer unable to replicate problem.*ak

I was driving home at 11:00 pm and just about to get on i 75, and my headlights went out. i had tail lights and i could use my flashers. i took it to the dealers next day and they found nothing wrong with it. i told them to put a new battery in it no matter what. i haven't driven it at night since. i'm afraid to drive it at night. *ak

I had no advance warning that my water pump was failing. luckily, i was just pulling in at home when the temperature bell sounded and the thermostat was advancing near the red area. when i shut the car off, i heard a noise and looked under the hood. the water in the reservoir was down to the add lin and was boiling furiously. had i been on the interstate, i fear that my car could have blown while driving. my car is a pt cruiser and i have heard about a similar incident from a friend who has an intrepid. i am very disappointed and upset about this incident! i have had recurring problems with the steering, and the service people told me that they couldn't hear the sound and that it was just "the car". i am becoming apprehensive about driving my car - especially on big roads or a few miles from home. i am thankful that, so far, only my finances and temperament are damaged. *la

After starting my engine, my airbag lite came on and never went off. everytime i have started my car since, the light comes on and stays on until the engine is turned off.

After parking and turning the vehicle off and removing the key, the vehicle continued to run with the key removed, the vehicle was able to run for 3 minutes to an hour before it shut off. the dealer had examined the vehicle 3 times and was unable to find the problem. *jb

The lower control arm bushings are separating from the rubber. this can cause loss of vehicle control, rattles, severe tire vibration or front end vibration. some of my members have had this occur as low as 5000 miles. currently mine has 36.000 miles and the problem is occurring on mine. i am a ase certified technician. and there is no way that these type of bushings should be having this separation problem at such a low mileage. a recall is in order, before a owner has a vehicle accident due to the vehicle loosing steering control.

Hello, i would like to make a complaint aginist optima batteries. i worked for optima batteries as a maintenance tech from 11/00 to 1/04 optima has a contract with chrysler to build batteries for the pt curisers. the problem is that some of the batteries that went in the cars leaked. the batteries fit some were in the passenger aera of the car it would let out acid fumes inside the car.i have seen the batteries sent down production line if they failed the leak test machine.during april of 2002 i called chrylser corp and spoke to stacy johnson 248-944-0608 and told her about the bad batteries and that they were not at qs5000. after that i still seen the leakers go to chrylser corp. if you need more info please call me at 303-650-9341 i can help out more because i no longer work for optima thank you george hecker. *ak

The front brakes and tires exhibit extreme wear and tear. front tires replaced approx. 40,000 miles, real ok at 68,000. front brakes replaced twice so far, with rotors and calipers needing replacements. the front suspension system appears to be overly stressed due to vehicle design.*ak

Purchased 7/00. experienced 3 separate issues w/ electrical system. 1st year of ownership 1)parking lights remained on when lights were off, resulting in tow, and replaced battery. 3rd year of ownership: 2)door ajar light on, bell dinging, interior light remains on and all doors are securely shut. resulted in tow and battery replacement. dealership said battery defective. 6mos later, same dinging problem occuring. warranty expired. prev dealer bankrupt, new dealer stating same defective battery. *ak

Bolts that hold the exhaust system onto the frame of the car break, leaving the exhaust system dangling. this has happened twice, now-- once in 2002, then again this year (2004) after a collision repair using chrysler bolts. *ak

My 01 chrysler pt cruiser, 25,602 miles, had a stiff brake pedal. car felt as if i was driving w/foot on brake. chrysler towed car to dealer. they said i had contaminated brake fluid, repairs not covered by regular or ext. warranty. my bill for repair was $2643.48. they replaced all brake system components.*ak

Lock cylinder for ignition key broken in steering column. key would not turn and steering wheel locked up. i am concerned that if the lock cylinder broke while operating the vehicle, the steering wheel may lock up causing the driver to lose control. *jb

Fuel line had previously been secured with nylon ties to prevent chafing against ac lines. however, fuel line rubbed against housing of outside air filter where it meets the firewall. this chafed the housing material and eventually caused a hole in it. the edge of this hole subsequently wore through the fuel line and caused fuel to spray into engine compartment. no fire resulted. repaired buy splicing a fitting into the fuel line at the point of the leak. *jb

2001 chrysler pt cruiser: the battery light keeps coming on. i've taken to dealer four time now for that problem. had the battery replaced twice. had the regulator in the computer replaced. i am still having problems. the transmission had to be replaced. it is a manual transmission. had the clutch replaced. all of this due to faulty parts! the vehicle keeps pulling to the right. had it fixed once and it still pulls. the date entered is when everything started. *cb

Ihave a defective rim resulting in a wheel that loses 1-2 pounds of air pressure per week. chrysler has had the car for service 4 times it the last six weeks and denies there is a problem. *ak

I smelled gasoline and discovered a puddle of gas under my 2001 pt cruiser. when i took it into the dealership they indicated that there was a crack in the neck leading from the gas tank and the tank would have to be replaced. there is nothing in my driving that would have caused this. i am concerned that this apparent defect may occur on more than just my car and may be a problem with other similar vehicles with 42,000 miles on them. the dealership had also done recall work at a different location on this gas tank and the problem may have something to do with the care they took doing the recall work. the crack in the tank when viewed is between a plastic 2.5" dia. tube piece in the upper corner of the tank and the tank itself, this tube piece is a separate piece they has been attached to the plastic tank. the seal between the two had been broken is some way.*ak

Trans shifter failed causing vehicle to lock up. *mr the dealer stated the starter malfunction, but the consumer disagreed.*scc *jb

The consumer can take the key out of the ignition switch with the vehicle running. consumer would have to turn the key again as if restarting the vehicle to shut it off. *ak

2001 pt cruiser, 5 speed manual transmission, 60,000 miles engine surges when car is moving, most noticeable when the car is not in gear. when coasting the engine rpm will vary between 1,200 and 2,000 rpm every 3-4 seconds until the car comes to a stop and then the engine rpm falls to 800. when the car is in gear, the car will accelerate without stepping on the gas pedal. the dealer reprogrammed the powertrain control module, but that only fixed the problem for one day. the car engine can surge when coasting and about to move into a parking spot or garage. i believe this is a serious safety issue. *la

My 2001 chrysler pt cruiser limited edition -- less than 3 years old, after having every required and recommended service at the car dealership -- needed a transmission overhaul on this date. the problem surfaced just past 36,000 miles while i was on vacation in late august, and i initially took it to the dealer on september 3. i was told it was safe to drive the vehicle. but the problem did get worse and i felt uncomfortable driving it, yet i could not get an earlier appointment. a new car, well cared for, should not need its transmission rebuilt just after the manufacturer's warranty runs out. *la

Have a 2001 pt cruiser. poor performance in gas economy, failed catalytic converter now egr valve has failed, i believe it is due to the catalytic converter failure. since chrysler has had other complaints about this issue with the cruisers why have they not been repairing them to the customers satisfaction?*ak

Bought an early 2001 pt cruiser. about one year after purchase, battery fails, car would not start, jump starting did not work. towed it it dealer and they replaced battery and said it was faulty. about a year after this occured, it happened again, dealer still says it is the battery's fault. it happened again on august 22, 2001 and i put a spare battery in car and drove to dealership. again they said that the battery was faulty. i believe there is an electrical problem with the car.

Chrome corroding and flaking off on original 16" tires. first noticed in 6/2003. dealership offered to replace one rim for a co-pay of $100 due to the severity of damage. but will not help with one showing slighter damage. *ph

Front brake pads crystalize requiring rotor replacement every 30000 miles. brake shop says every pt comes in this way. rear brakes do not adjust out and the front brakes stay partially engaged. this over heats the brakes causing many components to fail. in addition to the expense of replaceing theese parts, i am worried that i could have a brake system failure leading to a crash.

On 1/22/ 03 we took our 2001 pt cruiser (odometer 12,000 miles) into the dealer because the front disc brakes were squealing. we had previously noted that the passenger side front disc brake had locked when we tried to back the car out of the garage. after hitting the brakes several times, the brake finally unlocked. the dealership told us that the front rotors on both sides were grooved and could not be turned because the metal was so thin to begin with that there was not enough to machine even on a brand new rotor. the dealer also told us we didn't need to replace the pads yet, just the rotors. we opted to replace both the pads and the rotors at the time due to the labor costs. it is now 8 months and 5,671 miles later and the brakes are again squealing. we called the dealership to see if they would do something about the problem. they said their hands were tied and they could not help us other than to replace with the same parts. according to the service manager, chrysler is very much aware there is a problem with the disc brake rotors and premature wear, but they refuse to take any remedial steps. we have the same tires that originally came on the car and they are barely worn indicating we are not the kind of drivers who are hard on a car. the service manager appears to be just a frustrated with chrysler's lack of attention to this problem as we are. our only reasonable and intelligible recourse is to have the rotors and pads replaced with after market products. we will not use oem rotors & pads again. this is not normal wear and tear. this is faulty manufacturing or faulty design or both. in checking your website for 2001/2002 pt cruisers, we see that several other owners have had the same problems with their disc brakes. this is a safety issue as well as a monetary issue. please investigate. *jb

Consumer states when hitting any type of bump in the road tires blowout. all four rims have pitted cracks in them which causes the blowouts. *ak

Vehicle's door locks automatically locked on their own. *mr the vehicle started to lock on it's own without activation. the vehicle was serviced six times over a period of thirteen months by the chrysler dealership. the consumer would be driving and all of a sudden, all of the vehicle doors would unlock. the doors were suppose to automatically lock when the vehicle reached over 5 mph and randomly failed to do so, after activating the lock/security device and listening for the beep it did not activate. the dealer was unable to remedy. the problem had progressed rapidly and the correction attempts only resulted in problems with acceleration. *scc *jb

5 batteries, radio, speakers, door locks, paint, speed sensor on transmission, fan motor on engine, output speed sensor, t14 circuit all within 27 months. can't find cause of all these electrical problems. chrysler is no help! customer care hung up on me. lemon law ran out 1 month ago. upside down can't even trade in. help!!!!!

You can dial goodyear at 1-800.321.2136 press 1 then, press 3. ask about goodyear case # 559-496. it involves my pt cruisers, its original sets of tires and continued problems. i was worried about having future blow-outs. it's a matter of safety. goodyear reasonably, adjusted three tires for me after i explained my blow outs situation. i followed up again with goodyear, and toyo (file # 035253), explained the 16 inch wheel saga. how i spent a year going from dealership to dealership complaining about the 16 inch wheels and the tire blow-outs. they never recorded my rim complaints no matter which dc 5 star dealership i went too. they would record the cruisers mileage, and any warranted items they could bill dc for, but never a wheel or tire complaint. i questioned the service managers and the mechanics and they all repeated. no one (we know of) is complaining about low mileage uneven tire wear, difficulty balancing or pulling tires, rims out of round, bent, corroded, peeling or rusted rims. and no one is reporting tire blow-outs on the pt cruiser. dc has no technical service bulletins about these issues. i reported to goodyear and toyo costumer service department as a follow-up. i reviewed the findings from pritz dc 's 5 star dealership. as it goes, its not the tires--it's the rims. these alloy wheels are out of round, bent, corroded, soft, rusted on the street face of the wheels with rust and peeling chrome around lips rim which seals to the tire on the inside which you cannot see. other pt owners are also having similar problems with these 16 in wheels which they've also reported to goodyear. they deserve to be notified. the paint and body damage on our pt cruiser is from riding blown-out tires off the side of the road. thank god we are still alive. *ak

When the consumer attempted to make a left turn, the vehicle suddenly veered into a hard left turn, the driver loss control of the vehicle and hit a concrete base of a light pole. there was oil on the ground near the collision. a front end suspension specialist indicated the rack and pinion broke, which caused loss of control/crash. consumer felt this was a safety issue which should be investigated further. if it would be decided by someone from nhtsa to investigate the incident further, it should be done quickly since the vehicle has been released by the farmers texas county mutual insurance company for auction/sale. by central texas salvage pool at 721 north general bruce drive, temple, texas 76501, contact 254-777-111. owner has asked insurance company to put a temporary hold on sale of vehicle. insurance adjuster has agreed to a two week hold until february 7, 2003. unless there was further action by nhtsa or chrysler to indicate a further investigation for security reasons. this information should be added to odi id 770890. see 10009888 for vehicle owner's information. *ak

Rear suspension part broke. bell crank broke causing a loud knocking noise. dealer said that futher driving could have resulted in back suspension falling of of car in a catastophic failure.

During the first couple of minutes of operation, during closed phased of engine operation the vehicle will hesitate during acceleration. this is most noticeable in first, second and third gear and during cooler damp conditions. also during this closed phase, there is popping noise in exhaust system upon deceleration using the engine. the other major concern is a vibration from the engine and or transmission upon full accelerations in 4th gear. this even occurs when the engine is at or above 2500 rpm(recommended speed for starting 4th gear), and dissipates as the car speed increases. it is particularly a concern when entering express ways from on ramps. *ts *jb ****dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12-12-02 cut over to artemis****761677

While driving the vehicle consumer had a head on accident at 65mph. both front air bags did not deploy. dealer notified. ts

While driving car, the sunroof glass suddenly cracked upward and then shattered. it had never been hit by anything either from above or below. the sunshade was open at the time, but the sunroof glass was not retracted at all. the glass was not cracked, pitted or damaged in any other way before cracking and shattering. although the glass was held together for the most part by the outside sunfilm, the sunfilm was cracked in several places, and small shards of glass sprayed throughout the passenger cabin. fortunately, i was the only occupant of the car at the time and was not injured, but it could have been much worse as the shattered glass could have injured my eyes. to prevent more glass from coming into the cabin, i closed the interior sunshade and eventually put plastic over the sunroof to prevent moisture from coming into the car. i went to the dealer the same day to arrange for repair. the service manager called the local daimlerchrysler rep to see if chrysler would replace the glass under warranty. the local rep told the service manager that daimlerchrysler would not warranty the glass and referred me to my car insurer. he never saw the car. i have to pay for this defect myself. i checked the warranty supplied with the car and found no exclusion for glass or for defects in the sunroof. i have checked and found that other people have had exactly the same problem with the same response from daimlerchrysler. to me, this is a very serious problem that should be addressed as soon as possible. as troubling as it is that the sunroof broke and that daimlerchrysler will do nothing, it is even scarier that the safety glass shattered, scattering injury-causing shards of glass, not the usual pebbles, throughout the passenger cabin. safety glass is supposed to be exactly that - safe. this sunroof and the glass it is made of are not.

Outcome of my complaint #769146 dated may 1, 2001. the problems with the chrome wheels was finally resolved when chrysler replaced the front two chrome wheels at 24,000 miles because they were both out-of-round since new, creating the wobble in the steering, uneven steering, vibration and tire wear. i am still awaiting reimbursement for the two new pro-rated (by goodyear) eagle gt tires on the front, as well as awaiting word about a promise to reeplace the two rear eagle gt tires as well. anyone with the same wheel and/or tire problems can write to me and i will advise you as to what to [email protected]

Depending on driving conditions, vehicle burns oil at the rate of approximately one quart every ~600 to ~1000 miles. if the vehicle is driven mostly on expressways, the oil consumption is greater than if driven primarily on surface streets. i first brought this problem to the attention of the daimlerchrysler (dc) dealership at 9,770 miles, though i had noticed it earlier. at 9770 miles, i told the dealer that the car had consumed 1 quart of oil in 1,000 miles. on a subsequent trip to the dealer, the vehicle consumed 1 quart in just 616 miles. under warranty and over several service visits, the dealership replaced the pc valve twice and replaced one valve stem and 3 valves, all vallve seals, machined the heads and replaced the warped exhaust manifolds. the last time the vehicle was in for this problem, the dealer had it 15 days. the vehicle still burns oil at the same rates as before. dealer wants to replace the short block. dc has offerred to repurchase vehicle but we cannot agree on the price. i am suing undr california's lemon law

) on 9/2/03 i had to take the car in to have the brakes checked. problem found was the front right caliper piston stuck > closed causing uneven wear > of brakes pads ( metal to metal on front right and 50% pads on other three). dealer replaced the caliper piston, replaced pads and machined rotors. had to get a rental for one day. 2) on 2/21/05 had the car in the shop again to have the tires rotated and brakes checked. dealer said although the pads where wearing evenly now, they stated "but worn out front and rear", need to be replaced. brakes front and rear, replaced front rotors, resurfaced rear rotors" this time i had to have a rental for three days. 3) on 3/12/05 not even a month later, while i was driving on the freeway to work the, entire windshield became engulfed with steam, i could not see a thing and the wipers could not take the steam away, so again i had to head back to the dealership to have this checked out. dealer stated "found engine cooling fan not working & radiator cap not holding pressure" " replaced fan and radiator cap". another rental for two days. 4) on 6/14/06, 161 miles after the extended warranty runs out, i have a major transmission problem. engine light comes on, i get the car to the shop and the dealer states transmission solenoid pack shorted out and damaged the controller and i had to have this item replaced. no rental required this time but the bill was $1055.66 on my dime. now ....the grand daddy of them all! 5) the car was back at the dealer on 8/1/06 for the same front right caliper piston issue as on 9/2/03, but on my dime this time. *jb

While driving on a dark road electrical system disappeared without warning. sometimes it was hard for headlights to come on. did go out one time on their own. had not been to dealer. *ak

While driving oil was blowing through tail pipe in massive quantities. vehicle was taken to the dealership. dealership wanted owner to leave vehicle to be checked, but did not want to give owner a loaner vehicle. owner was not able to leave vehicle. please provide any further information. *ak

While parked vehicle slipped out of gear and rolled down driveway into a mail box. dealer / manufacturer notified. *ak *ml

On 12/6/02 i was traveling 60 mph. i tried to make a lane change and the whole car lost control. the car started rocking side to side for about a mile. the car would not give tranction to the ground. i kept thinking on each rocking motion that the car was going to flip over at any moment. i did not hit the brake for fear this would make the car flip due to the aggressive side to side rocking the car was doing. the steering system seemed to be out. the car felt as it was going to tip over. the car eventually slammed into a concrete embarkment divider on the freeway head-on. the air bags on the car did not deploy. i've had this same problem twice before making lane changes in town but the aggessiveness of the motion was not the same as this highway incident. i'd like this vehicle to be investigated for defectiveness. i'd like the scene of my accident to be invesigated to see the traction marks. i'd like to know of any similar compolaints about this make and model of car. 2001 chrysler pt cruiser. i'd like the damages of my car to be compensated for as well as my own injuries and to fix the original problem with this vehicle. dt

After 1 1/2 years of front end pulling, unevenness and steering wheel wobble, dealer concluded faulty tires. goodyear then concluded cause to be out-of-round oem chrysler 16" chrome wheels. goodyear did not replace the tires free of charge, i had to pay for the pro-ration. as of this writing, am awaiting to speak with chrysler service zone rep about the problem. i have requested chrysler reimburse for the two front tires, pay for rear tire replacements, and replace all four chrome wheels with new ones. goodyear store manager confirmed many pt cruisers have been in his shop, misdiagnosed by dealer to be faulty tires, only to discover the oem chrysler chrome wheels are out-of-round. also told me 1) either the oem wheels are defective in manufacture, or 2) the design of the pt cruiser is causing only the chrome wheels to become out-of-round upon normal driving/usage. my goodyear tires were/are 3/4 tread worn at just 22,500 miles. normal tread life for these tires is between 45,000-50,000 miles. dt

I have had my pt cruiser in 4 different times in the passed 11/2 years. there is a serious wobble in the steering, and each time the dealer looks at my complaint. they rotate and balance the tires. i have told them on each consecutive visit that the problem has not been resolved. at one point a dealer told me that they had used the wrong "kind" of wheel weights and they were loosening up. another visit warranted a new steering column. the problem persists i have looked for recalls, and service bulletins but none are in affect for this particular problem. it has been quite frustrasting to not see the problem solved. i am looking for help, and am considering filing the minnesota lemon law. thinking that i should start here. dt

Tires can not be balanced to eliminate wheel shimmy. wheels and tires from another pt cruiser eliminated the problem. dt

The drivers seat belt locks up tight anytime i lean forward to check for cross traffic at a stop sign or to check the side mirror blind spot before changing lanes. it locks immediately, i'm actually pinned to the seat back. i have to lean back into the seat back to allow it to release before being able to move my upper body forward. in the beginning it rarely happened, now it's almost all the time. on the other matter of the front disk brakes. the right side not only wore out twice as fast as the left but wore at an angle which caused the metal backing plate to scrape the rotor before the sqeeker was even close to scraping. i still have the brake pads.

On 9/24/2002, my catalytic converter blew out the welded seam. making a deafening sound inside the car. upon inspection of the vehicle the next day they told me the catalytic converter blew out the seam on the top. after the parts department ordered a new catalytic converter from atlanta, they told me it would be in the next day. however, in the mean time they checked with chrysler service contract i have for 100,000 miles or 3 years did not cover the part, however it was covered by a 80,000 mile warranty. which i was 4,600 miles past. i average about 3-4000 miles a month in my job. then the next day when i called to check on the car to see if it was finished, they told me the part was on national backorder. i was renting a car at the time for $36.99 a day. so i called chrysler and told them of the situation on 9/26/2002, they said since it was on national backorder that the situation was different and they would help me out by paying for 1/2 the rental of the car. which i agreed was some what fair. so i callde the dealer back on monday and he said the part was still not in, didn't know for sure when it would be in and then later that day they ssaid they had a promise date of 10/7/2002 of shipment. it finally came in on 10/4/2002. which they finished fixing it by closing time that day. the service manager looked at the catalytic converter and said he would confirm quote"that this has been leaking for quite some time now and was not just an overnight happening by the corrosion of the part. so i feel a full refund is in order for parts, labor and car rental. the service manager "ricky hendrix" said he would confirm this with any one that needed to know. please advise! mr

The jack failed while the car was up on it. while changing a tire, the supplied scissors jack twisted and bent allowing the car to fall. the part # is 05008275aa 17763. the weight of the car bent both the jack frame and the adjustment screw. mr

Engine died without any warning - power control module failed killing engine - on major hwy without a shoulder - put on flashers but still rear ended by another driver after fully stopped who was passing on right.*ak

The brake knuckles, part number 05073646, have developed a large cracks, one in the right rear, and one in the left rear. this part holds the brake calipers onto the body, and should be much stronger than it is. mr

Fuel line inside engine compartment had rubbed against plastic cap for a/c recharge nipple. this eventually caused a small puncture in the fuel line and allowed a fine mist of gasoline to be sprayed in the vicinity of the exaust manifold. no fire resulted from this incident.*ak

1. weather stripping on rear passenger window fell off. dealer glued or taped to fix. finally another dealer replaced assembly (plastic liner and rubber component). 2. transmission oil pan leak. dealer resealed gasket x 2 without success. currently trying to replace oil pan. 7 days to repeatedly fix problem. loaner car (same make amd model) has same problem.

Fuel line rubbing thru by the air conditioner fitting, (incorrectly routed from factory) causing fuel to be sprayed all over the top of the engine and exhaust manifold.*ak

Fuel line on pt cruiser rubs against the refrigerant line, causing wear on the fuel line. i was notified of this problem thruough ptcruiser club membership. i caught mine before it was worn completely through, and prevented a high-pressure fuel leak that has occurred on other ptcruisers. this not an issue that can wait for other occurances to surface. i will be taking mine to the dealer for remedy.*ak

Fuel line rubbing against the ac lines in the engine compartment. causing wear on the line and possible break, leaking the fuel on to the engine. dealer medved 11201 w. i-70 frontage rd. n. wheat ridge co, 80033 offered not to fix the fraid line, because there were no recalls from chrysler about this problem, but decided to tie the line back so it woudl not rub anything in the engine compartment. *ak

During the first 2 minutes of operation, the engine hesitates or misfires on acceleration. this occurs during hot or cold weather. when shifting into 4th gear, and accelerating under full throttle, the engine / front end shakes. these symptoms have been confirmed by a technician, but nothing shows up on theri electronic diagnostic system. as a result chrysler refuses to try and remedy the problem.*ak

Original fuel line location caused friction and wearing on the braided fuel line. this wore a hole clear through the line spewing gasoline all over a very hot engine! i was the one who originally brought this to the attention of the internet 'pt community'. please stress a recall on this issue. very concerned for those who have no 'net access!! they have to be notified somehow! some folks who didn't bother to check.. because they have a 'later model' 2001. and we've already established that this is not relevant. they need to check! -thank you!*ak

Air bag light and buzzer constitantly on. always self-testing. two cd dealers have accomplished 7 different repairs with no luck. dealers are blaming chrysler-daimler, cd is blaming dealers. i am stuch in the middle with inoperative air bag system.

I came to a stop after a long freeway trip and noticed a very strong gas smell. i looked under hood and could smell and see gasoline had sprayed all over the engine compartment. later, i found a link to a pt club website problem area, where someone had posted about the same problem just a few weeks earlier. her milage was at the same point as mine (around 40,000 - 45,000 miles) (i remember conversing with her when she and i were waiting for our cars to arrive in aug 2000 - so our cars were made around the same time). other posts reflected that others were having the same problem in their pt's - the fuel line is getting worn on a spot on the underside (not visible) where it rubbed against a part of the airconditioning line. comparing notes, it seems some pt's had come out of the factory with the fuel line tied away from the airconditioner, some didnt. chrysler recognizes this because they have put a tsb out for the problem. our own observation is that cars made a few months earlier are configured differently and don't have the problem. i dont know how much later after mine was built they began tying the hose away as a regular practice. my car was built aug 2, 2000. when getting the fuel line replaced at the dealership the week of 7/12 - i pointed out that this was an obvious, and known safety defect and asked them to fix it with no charge. the service manager said that because there was no recall, and because it was out of warranty, i would have to pay for it. so i paid $312.66 to replace the hose. on a car event a week after my car was repaired, we looked at the hoses on about 10 other pt's - those that werent tied back all showed wear in the same area. one with about 35,000 miles had significant wear such that the line should probably be replaced and not just tied back to prevent further damage. i suspect there are alot of pt's out there that were made around the same time that are facing an unexpected fuel leak. *ak

Brakes have smelled entire life of vehicle. brake pads and rotor had to be replaced pre-maturely at 18000 miles. brakes still smell. believe that the root cause of the problem was not determined and problem will reoccur. believe that there is a manufacturer defect with brake assembly or anti-lock brake system. originally purchase car at robert green cpj, have serviced at salerno cp.*ak

Automatic door locks are a design defect because the device does not do what it was intended to do under all conditions. this feature is surpose to lock the doors above a speed of 15 mph. but if the vehicle doors were unlocked when the car is in park and the engine running, then the vehicle is then put in drive and moves above 15mph the automatic door locks does not function leaving the doors unlock which is not what the device was design intent was, but the dealer claims is by design. i also own a 1996 dodge caravan and the automatic door locks function under all conditions to lock the doors when the vehicle 15mph which is a very reassuring feature to have in the car. i feel the automatic door locks in the ptcruiser design is faulty if it does not lock the doors at all times when the vehicle reachs speeds above 15mph and provides the passangers with a false condition of security that the automatic door locks will lock the doors whenever the vehicle has begin to move at street legal speeds.*ak

Sunroof glass busted while going approx. 45 mph.glass was blown upwards, and shattered completely, thus falling down on driver.glass was protruding upwards, pictures taken immediately. dealer contacted immediately. manufacturers district representative denied any type of service warranty verbally without looking at vehicle.he claims something fell from the sky due to a dent on top(of which documentation is filed with bbb), but never asked me where this came from. had he asked i could've answered, even dealer was aware of this old dent. never would discuss this matter with me. dealer was informed i was not happy, and understood i would go further, and supported my problem concerning the sunroof. this vehicle has always been extremely bad on the pressure contained inside.if you open a window your ears pop.nothing, nothing hit the window from outside, if it did glass would've been going down, not up. nothing hit it from the inside, no cars around me. glass was in my hair, small cuts on my hands, and thank god no child, or someone else was with me. i have been told by a chrysler customer service rep. my report will go nowhere, and determination is as the district rep. has stated. i have pictures from a camera i bought immediately which show the protruding glass.this could be a serious accident waiting to happen to someone else.
