2000 PONTIAC Grand Prix

Transmittion fluid pump bolts loosened from frame inside transmittion itself. Pump continued to pump transmittion fluid, but into the chamber that contains the relief valve. Transmittion fluid exited the relief valve at a fast rate while driving on a normal city street. Mechanic suggested the bolts may not have been torqued correctly at the factory.

This car, a Pontiac Grand Prix GTP Sedan, lost 4th gear due to, according to my transmission shop, a weak 4th gear shaft. Aparently the manufacturer is aware of the problem and now supplies a hardened shaft to shops for use during rebuilds. This car has never been abused, is adult owned and driven, there is absolutely no reason why I should have to be rebuilding my transmission at less than 90,000 miles.

This car seems when it hit 100000 it just started to fall apart. I recently just did the lifters in the engine due to a knocking in block. Me and my friend who is a certified master mechanic did the job in one day. It has been just about three months and wouldn’t you know the knocking is back. Time to rip the whole engine down again. I will never by american car ever again. American cars just don’t hold up. I have a infinity and also had a honda and never ever had a problem with either one.

Purchased March 2003 – 36,000+mi – At 39,500 – car began stalling, cuts off completely – at any speed, anytime – Interstate 65mph – car cuts off. I can restart – by turning ignition – but is a life threatening defect. GMC dealer – replaced fuel filter -then said it was fuel pump. I had fuel pump replaced with GM parts – by certified mechanics. After this, dealer basically told me they did not know what was wrong – take it elsewhere. GM mechanics drove car home,hooked up to computer – had it cut off with them -still no answer- I just left it for 2 weeks with a certified repair shop (not GM) they could find NOTHING – but unlike GM – they charged me NOTHING. What to do now??

On March 23, 2007, I pulled in the parking lot at work. Smoke started coming out from under the hood, so I got out and opened the hood and seen the fire. I slammed the hood, and called 911. The fire department responded quickly and put out the fire. The insurance adjuster said he could not identify the cause of the fire. It melted everything under the hood and peeled back the paint on top of the hood. The fire was so intense until it melted the drivers side fender well around the strut. The fire melted four holes in the top of the supercharger (have pictures if needed). The insurance company totaled the car.

My car caught fire 6-5-03. General Motors sent an investigator out. On 7-2-03 I received a call from GM. They told me the report was my problem they would not take any responsibilty for the fire. I drove my car aprox. 15 miles that morning to my kids daycare. I pulled up to the front of the daycare and cut the car off and it started smoking and flames came from under the hood. Everything under the hood is melted no brake lines, fuel line or wires. I have not done anything to the car but change the oil. The oil was last changed aprox. two months before that. Cars are not designed to just catch fire. I put my kids and a daycare full of kids in jeopardy that day.Just to add a little to my complaint. I have left about 6 messages since July 3 for the GM rep, Kevin Drew, to call me without success. When I purchased my car it only had 51,000 miles. I had trouble with Bill Heard dealership from day I drove the car off the lot it had problems. It took 4 months (1) The pistons was making awful noise. (2) The security light was flashing (3) The cig. lighter had a burning smell when pushed in. I have a copy of the complaints , findings and action taken on a service report provided by Bill Heard. In that report it states that they found burnt and melted wire they removed the wiring harness and replaced wires. I left a message for Kevin Drew asking him to call me because I know for a fact that the wire going to the fuse box was melted. Everything under the hood is melted no wires, brake line or fuel line exist anymore. The region of the fire is the area of all the wires, computer box etc. in the middle of the hood at the center up toward the top close to the windshield.. This happened at a daycare. I was parked no more than 3 feet from the building.

I first had problems with my brakes at 19,000 had to have the from rotors turned and new napa brake shoes, this was done at a certified napa repair shop. the cost was approx. 175.00. Then about 35000 miles I started having trouble stopping so I took it to another napa shop and he told me the rotors front and rear needed to be replaced along with new brake shoes all around. I replaced both rotors and shoes and now am experiencing the same problem at 43000 miles. I need to know who I can contact since this problem is not going to get better and it is getting very expensive.

First I could not shift out of park. Stepping on the breake should allow the lever on the shift lever to depress allowing me to shift into drive. This was an intermittent problem at first. Next, came the key problem within a week or two. I could not turn the key back to it’s “home” position in order to take it out. After much research I learned that I could stick a pen or other pointed object up under the steering column to realease the key. I also need to depress the “Shift Lock Release” next to the shift lever in order to get the car out of Park. Within 3-4 weeks this problem went from intermittent to the point where it happens every time now. I have found numerous reports online of other Grand Prix owners who report the same problem. I will not buy another Grand Prix now for fear of the newer models having the same problem.

2000 Pontiac Grand Prix 3.8L V6December 10, 2007 Observed low coolant during routine oil/filter change. Filled coolant reservoir and performed oil/filter change. December 12 Callaremi, 385 RT. 46 East Hackettstown NJ 0784 Pontiac: Took car for repair of coolant leak. Dealer failed to diagnose issue and was told the car was fine. March 15th 2008, low coolant light indicator came on. Proceeded to performed routine oil/filter change and added coolant. March 21st 2008, experienced rough start and ticking noise. The noise was constant during cold start and remained after engine reached operating temperature.March 24th 2008, took car back to Callaremi for service of engine ticking noise. Was told noise was due to a # 3 cylinder intake lifer collapsed and bent push rod. I proceeded to argue that failure to service car according to TSB 03-06-01-016

1. my 3.8 L Motor leaks coolant . 2. Water keep coming into the passenger side floor pan . 3. The headlights are not illuminating road clearly .,inside the lenses of both headlight and Driving lights the reflective coating is pealing again .

In sept 2011 my 2000 pontiac gran priz burst into flames under the hood it was parked at farm credit. i only had liability insurance so no claim was filed. i recently received a recall notice for a possible engine fire. i contacted gm and was told nothing could be done because i didn't have the car anymore. of course i don't have the car it burnt completely up!!!

In 2000 and i believe this was not accidental in anyway-i asked for my brother to come to my home in 1999 because of people who would not get out of my home in anaheim-my toyota cressida in 1990 or so had been hit with something in my own driveway without anyone getting the anaheim police or go over to the neighbors on both ends-i had their kids over for dinner numberous times- of the street on wilken way -w these people were practicing tacking houses using people they knew, to get money from your house-they all had my phone number and none of them called to protect our houses.

Takata recall my 2000 pontiac grand prix recently stopped going in d one day i came outside my house and started my car it went in reverse perfectly fine just wouldnt go in d so i used the manual option off 1st gear and the gears worked only for a matter of time before they also went out. on another occasion still not going in drive using the manual option my car completley would not move when i tried to go at a stop sign in any gear other than reverse. i have searched the internet to find out a lot of people with the same car also has this problem they say it could be the slenoid in the transmission or the transmission itself.

I am probably the 3rd owner of this car and was unaware of the recall. i researched and found that the recall exists because i was searching for a reason for my car to experience an engine fire this past monday. after calling the manufacturer, it appears that the search for current owners is not in the purview of the manufacturer and all of the responsibility for the research of the car is on the purchaser. at the time of the fire, the car had been being driven to the coffee store, when returning to the car about 10 minutes later, it was discovered to be engulfed in flame. with flames coming out from the hood. my issue is with the responsibility of notification and the reasonable expectation of a consumer that the manufacturer of a licensed vehicle make attempts to communicate recall data beyond the scope of the original purchaser. all states monitor all licensed vehicles including the current owner. it seems that this data can be utilized to make a far better attempt to locate owners when such a hazard exists with the car. i was completely unaware of the recall status of this car.

Transmission failure at 180k miles. car will not shift on it own i have to force car into gear by speeding up hearing transmission whine and then letting off the gas pedal so transmission shifts gears. this is on all road conditions. so many complaints have been made why has gm not issued a recall on this matter.

I took my pontiac gtp to burlingame putnam in ca because i checked on here nhtsa if i had a recall and i did which was fire wall compartment recall so when i went to the dealer and had my car serviced i picked it up and once i got home i noticed one valve cover was replaced which was only one valve cover facing the front of the car! the valve cover facing the rear towards the fire wall was still the old valve cover! and is still leaking oil which im afraid might take out my engine if it blows the head gasket completely and cause a fire,can even cause a major accident! please help. technicians should do a complete service not just half of the job and be lazy to not even replace the rear valve cover thats very irresponsible and what if i had kids or family when this happens

Excessive oil leak from the top of the engine. valve cover gaskets and intake gaskets leaking oil directly on to the manifold i smell it burning every time i drive it and there is a visable puddle of oil on the top of the engine

A while back there was a recall on the pontiac grand prix years 2000 - 2004 if im not mistaken due to oil leak causing an engine fire. i just bought this car from a private owner and was wondering if this was the problem. it seems that when i put oil in it is does leak on to the ground but with how much oil i put it in already doesnt explain where the rest of it went, id say about 5 quarts in a day. i just dont want to be driving and suddenly have the engine catch fire if this is the problem.

My daughter had been driving this 2000 pontiac and was complaining of it smelling "hot" all the time. we had the service shop take a look under the hood, and he instantly said, check with gm on a recall for these leaky valve covers"! interestingly enough, we had that very recall notice hanging on the fridge, waiting for a call that" parts were available and to bring the car in for repairs"! well guess what gm, a few days after i called a local gm dealer, and she said "oh no, we don't have parts on hand, we just wait for people to call and then order them", the car burned up! just as they said could happen! they also said don't park inside a garage! they are right! it was parked outside the shop, thank goodness, when it burst into flames! i could have easily lost daughters in this blaze, due to gm's failure to repair the car correctly the first time, then failure to have the parts needed to repair it the second time it was recalled!! now they don't want to replace the vehicle they let burn up!! i filed a complaint, sent pictures of the burned up thing, and they basically say "tough luck". i am throughly disappointed in gm on this deal. you should be willing to take ownership of this car problem, step up to the plate, and do what is right! first offer 610.00 dollars! ha! what car do i buy my daughter for that!? second offer 800.00, again, what car do i buy my daughter for that? bring me out a couple of cars at that price gm, and we will see if they can replace the car you let burn up! we are out a car, out transportation to and from college, out contents of the car, we figured to be around $3600.00! and you say $800.00! google this recall #15757 up and see just how many of us are out of luck! i just thank god that the car had just been parked at the repair shop, and didn't burst into flames while my daughters were driving it down the highway, and you should too gm!

Car was previously recalled for valve cover leak which could result in an engine fire. i received another notice to fix the same valve cover...the recall needs to be expanded to both valve covers. the front cover was fixed but they did not fix the rear valve cover which also leaks oil onto the manifold and the main exhaust pipe. i had the car in for a repair a few years ago and the dealer told me the rear valve cover was leaking and not to park it in the garage until i had it fixed, i asked if it was to be fixed under the recall and he said no only the front one. well the front one is not causing the fire hazard, it is the rear one. i have had a small fire in the rear of the firewall as a result and clean this area to keep the oil from building up.how do i get this recall expanded to include "valve covers" instead of just the front one?. this is a design flaw as i did receive a notice they were having to design and then make new front valve covers and remove the cover over the top of the engine. my concern is they are only fixing 1/2 the problem as there are 2 valve covers, and the one they have the recall on is not the one leaking oil onto the exhaust. i have been parking outside and their is oil spots where this grand prix is parked.

I have a 2000 pontiac grand prix that has been recalled three times-recall #15757. i called your hotline yesterday and got the most unemphatic response in regards to the seriousness of our only car being a fire hazard. the fact is, i have stage ii lung cancer and need a safe car to drive to dr's appointments regarding my condition. we also rent a garage for $75.00 a month, which we obviously do in order to park our car! your brilliant hotline spokeswoman (makayla, ext. 5913737, 1-866-790-3600) told my girlfriend (as does the recall) not to park the fire hazard in-or-around garages, other vehicles, as well as other fire risks. she actually told my girlfriend that we should "park the car down the block", due to the fact that we live in an apartment complex. are you kidding me? she also said that her husband owns the same model of vehicle, and that he hasn't had any problems with his. by your own data, roughly 1,350 fires have resulted from this dangerous piece of equipment. i will not put my, or any other person's, life at risk. gm doesn't even have the part(s) manufactured to fix the problem. they need to replace my motor, period! it seems obvious that your spokesmen and women are trained to discourage people from making complaints, therefor leaving the car owners' lives in jeopardy. you would think you would have learned after all of the fatalities regarding tires a few years ago, i am quite sure they were treated with the same lack of remorse during their experience as well. by the way, i am going to send the receipts from my landlord for my garage rental, it makes no sense to pay for a garage i can't use-due to gm's (and the nhtsa's) lack of good faith. if i don't hear something very soon, i am going to use social media to explain how ridiculous your "recall" protocol seems to protect gm, instead of consumer safety.

I drovefor a short time, less than a 10 mile distance, then pulled into a friends driveway. when i put the car in park i noticed smoke coming from under the hood, so i opened the hood, and there were flames coming from the front of my engine. so i put the hood down, but did not close it while i grabbed the fire extinguisher. when i opened the hood the flames had tripled, in a matter of seconds, consuming the more than half of the front of the engine. i was able to extinguish the fire without calling the fire dept. and without causing any damage to the garage it was parked in front of.

There are many safety concerns on this vehicle. the first concern is the smoke that comes from under the hood because of the oil leaking on the engine while in motion. to the point i have had to use a hose to cool down the motor. oil poured out with the water. i have had the prior recalls done and still had leaking after the so called recall was done in 2010. i was told by castle pontiac (north riverside, il) there was no further repairs they could offer. even though i showed them the oil continuing to leak after the so called recall was completed. the second concern is the head lamp assembly that is foggy looking causing the vehicle to have poor lighting. the next concern is the suspension that is literally falling apart. i have also had to have the head gasket changed on this vehicle and the transmission had to be rebuilt. also the tail lamps retain water every time it rains & the passenger & drivers side doors fill with rain. like i said there are many safety concerns on this vehicle. i can provide photos to the correct parties & would be willing to consider my vehicle being used to be investigated to create remedies for these safety concerns as my small child & myself travel in this vehicle. when i talked to gm customer service today i was told the vehicle is safe to drive yet i am sure if the owner of gm had this vehicle they would not deem this vehicle safe. thank you in advance for taking time to read my concerns. *tr

I had the recall done on my grand prix in 2011. for the spark plug wire retainer, to allegedly prevent from engine fire. 6/9/14 i had pulled into a gas station to fuel up. noticed that smoke was coming from under the hood all of the sudden. popped the hood. saw nothing but flame. shut the hood, got an extinguisher right away from the store attendant. opened the hood and put out the fire... gas station was very busy at the time, a lot of people pumping gas wile my car was on fire. luckily the matter was dealt with in a timely matter. this problem has the potential go much farther than just someone's car being burnt. and has already for some people. if i had not decided to stop for gas, its more than likely my car would have been torched on the side of the freeway. gm doesn't want to seem to take care of the damage caused to my car within a reasonable amount of time, or even if at all. this happen to me yesterday. and was nothing but tossed around to different departments at gm over the phone. why was i not given a loner/rental car until they fix the problem that they have created? Car was driving perfectly fine. parked my car at the back of the bally's parking lot. thought i smelled something funny. waited 3 minutes then saw some white smoke coming out of both sides of hood of car. i thought white smoke meant overheated (which has never happened to car) i popped the hood and the there were flames coming out of the engine. called 911. police and fire came and put it out with fire extinguisher. i will need to get car towed somewhere, however it can be examined for root cause. *tr

Car was parked about 10 mins. before someone noticed smoke coming from under hood. hood was opened and fire was put out by water. fire dept was called and they just made sure fire was out. much of the top of the engine was melted and harness' were melted and burnt. we know the recall for this car for fires was done in 2009, yet it still caught fire. *tr

My vehicle caught fire.

I was pulling out to cross busy four lane. a car coming from righe switched lanes and turned in front of me. i applied brakes smartly but did not apply hard enough to slide or squeal tires. after that i continued about a mile and started to brake for a stop light. brakes felt as if some air was in system (not fully bled). next i applied again for another light. condition worsened. by the time i returned to my residence, about three miles away, i had to use emergeny brake. all fluid was gone from master cylinder reservoir. i placed car on jack, refilled reservoir and pumped brakes, and found that about 2 to 3 inches of brake lines directly under drivers floor, on the sloped part going upward to master cylinder ,were severely corroded and had failed (pin hole). line above looks new and line below the area looks new. also the car is very clean and non rusted on bottom. this car has been pampered since we purchased from dealer at 18,000 miles. this is clearly a materials issue as the part that is corroded is in a sloped area which would naturally drain off any moisture that collects. additionally fuel lines and adjacent to the brake lines are also corroded. i suspect that lines were damaged when originally bent, probably peircing the outer corrosion coating. this should be covered by a recall. i searched for about five minutes on line and found five complaints that exactly duplicate my problem. this failure mode bypasses the safety design of the master cylinder which is designed to keep either front or rear brakes working if the other fails. it is catastrophic and will (or probably has) caused injury or death. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) *tt

I was traveling to work at around 5:30am and started to pass a semi truck when the semi signaled to come over too the passing lane as well to pass a slower moving truck in front of him. i let off the gas pedal and signal for the truck to maneuver into the passing lane. i pressed on the brake pedal and the pedal went to the floor and had no stopping power. then the brake warning light came on, so i turned on my hazard lights to move to the shoulder of the road. i got out and checked the fluid level in the master cylinder to find that there was none visible. i call my brother to come and tow me and the car home, which was about 6 miles from the house. after i lifted the car and put brake fluid in the master cylinder, i found that the brake line had ruptured where the fuel line and the brake fluid line come together in the rear of the car. i have had to pay for the repairs to the brake line system of $255 of my own monies! thanks pontiac for possibly causing the loss of life or injury to myself, my family, and any other misfortunes that might have happened because of your lack of a improper, unreliable and unsafe braking system!!! as this is not the only report of this failure, i hope and pray it does not come to someone losing a life before you admit your mistakes and failures! *js

After driving the vehicle from home appx 40 minutes, i parked the vehicle in the parking garage at my place of employment at appx 7:57 am. i went into the building, up to my floor. at appx 8:03, we were told to move our cars out of the garage due to a fire. went back to parking garage where i see my car burning as well as the nearby cars. driver's side, doors, dash, windshield, steering wheel, wheel, entire hood and engine completely melted/mangled/gone, however the glove box on passenger side still worked and contents were merely wet and sooty. four other cars near my vehicle also caught fire and there was also damage to building. fire report was handed to me after they put it out with time stamp of 8:10. i can't believe how fast this happened. i've missed work, the other owners are out vehicles, one even had only liability insurance. they now are trying to determine cause and if my insurance company is liable. after receiving the 2009 recall in the mail, i immediately went to the dealer and had the issue "fixed". owned the car from 2003 til the fire on the 15th. routine maintenance, all receipts kept, nothing really major over the years, tires, oil changes, brakes, rotors, if an engine light came on, it was taken care of immediately. no known issues. i feel terrible for the other people, i'm embarrassed because it looks like i didn't take care of my car and i was vigilant about its upkeep as i drove it for years and i loved it! i have been staying with my parents, and i lost about $700 worth of misc items that burned in the car which are not covered because i'm not the homeowner, nor do i have a renters policy because i'm not renting. i'm wondering what happens next?? *tr

There have been more than i can count on both hands to the incidents that this care has stalled. it happens unexpectedly and i never know when it is going to happen, but it always seems to happen when i am in the middle of traffic. so, i have to pull over and try and start the car. which it will start then sputter and stall and die. it has had a new computer, 2 new fuel pumps, fuel resistor, fuel relay switches, starter, supercharger, 2 fuse boxes which are a discontinued part that has to come from an auto wrecker, and recently a wire that was frayed behind the fuse box that had something to do with the fuel system. all this has been done within the last 10 months since we purchased the car on payments on june 1, 2009. needless to say i am not sure as of this last repair if it has corrected the problem. my main concern is if i were driving on a windy mountainous road with no turnouts and the car decided it wanted to stall, where would i go or do. because a car or big rig could be coming around the turn and not even know i was stopped. my life and any other drivers or passengers would be in jeopardy of being injured and/or killed. this car to me is very unsafe and i am stuck with payments and don't know what to do about the problems we have had or even if it has been resolved. *tr

My 2000 pontiac grand prix received recall #09047. i brought it into morrisey pontiac for the work. three weeks after the car was supposedly "repaired", i had returned to my daughters house and not 5 minutes after that, we heard fire sirens and saw flashing lights outside. there were flames coming out of my hood shooting about 8 feet in the air. the firemen put the fire out, but there was nothing left to the front of my car. i notified morrisey pontiac & was told that they repaired the car as per the general motors recall & i should take up damages to my car with them. i filed a claim with general motors file #681357. the person handling this claim is dawn mcguin. in speaking with ms. mcguin she said general motors was not taking responsibility for the fire, but would offer me $2,600.00 for the damage. she told me this was the kelly blue book value of my car. when speaking with my insurance co. & the body shop where the car was taken, they both stated that my car is worth between $5,500 - $6,000. i then called ms. mcguin. when we started to review my car & its options she didn't have the correct model & all of the options. she then said she would get back to me, as of this date she has not. i have been very pleased with this vehicle since its purchase. i feel that the repair was either not done or not done correctly. what happened to the car was exactly what the recall & repair were supposed to prevent. thank you for any assistance in this matter. *tr

I own a 2000 pontiac grand prix gt with the naturally-aspirated 3800-series v-6 engine. i experience the same smell of burning oil that the owners of the supercharged gtp engines were warned to look out for. there was a recall for the gtp engines due to manifold seepage. it appears that the same thing is happening with the naturally-aspirated version of that same 3800-series engine and that a minor fix was implemented (new spark plug wire casings and mounts to move the wires out of the way of the hot oil seepage) when gm has already had a problem with the 3800-series engine leaking oil and causing engine compartment fires. i believe this is something more serious and needs to be looked in to. *tr

Smelling gasoline when car was parked in garage. the smell was variable but seemed to be stronger when weather was hot. i checked the fuel injectors to be certain no o-ring was leaking. none were leaking but i noticed small amount of gasoline on the valve cover on the valve cover closet to the firewall. checking i found that by depressing the "quick connect" between the fuel line and the fuel rail i could make a small amount of gasoline escape. looking at the engine cover (large plastic cover with v-6 3.8l on it) that there was an indent in the insulation where this was pressing on the fuel line. i removed the cover and have driven for 1 week without the gasoline smell. i have ordered a replacement quick connect. *tr

I have a 2000 pontiac grand prix gp and when it would run for awhile, or i would drive a lot in a day, the transmission seemed to shift harder. on the highway it would be especially bad or from a traffic light going from stopped to highway speed. it would shift hard and sounded terrible. i took it to the shop, and they found out they would have to re-build my transmission! at a total cost of over $2500 to me! had i not taken my vehicle to the shop, my transmission would have eventually failed, and could have led to a more serious accident and a more costly repair. *tr

The factory passkey 3 security system has numerous times failed and gave me nuisance alarms. now it is to the point that my own car thinks i am stealing it and will not drive. it will turn over and then shut off in 3 seconds, i have been researching this for the 3 days i have been without my car and there are numerous complaints of other consumers with this problem. the fix i will have to pay to have my car towed to a gm dealer and then pay gm to fix the problem they created when they installed the faulty security system. i spent my hard earned money on a car with a problem and now i have to spend my hard earned money to fix a problem they gave me. now i know why american cars are going to cease to exist. *tr

On 2/14/09 at 8:30 pm central time, a fire occurred in the hood of my 2000 pontiac grand prix. the car was parked and off when the fire occurred. flames were sighted after the car had been parked for about 20 minutes. the police and fire station were notified promptly. *tr

Mold smell - some part has to be cleaned near the air conditioner which requires several parts to be removed to get to where the water will not drain and is causing the smell. problem will re occur due to the design of the car. *tr

I noticed deep cracks on the inside wall of two tires as i prepared to rotate. i removed tires from vehicle and took one to the dealer for inspection. i was told by the dealer that the manufacturer had not recalled the tires and my only remedy was a prorating based on tread wear. i contacted manufacturer and was told the same thing. *tr

I was on my way home from work. i decided to stop and get gas before going home. i stopped got gas and when i started my car a little smoke came out the sides of the hood. i didn't think anything of it because it wasn t alot. and so i kept driving about 2 block away i had more smoke coming out. i was only 3 blocks from home so i decided to just get home. more and more smoke started coming out i lost a little power and then a flame shot into the car. i was headed up the hill to my house and still continued to lose power as i got right infront of my house i couldn't move forward and started rolling backwards down the hill and then my brakes gave out and the only thing that stopped me was the emergency brake. by this time flames were shooting out from under the hood. i grabbed everything that i thought was important, ran it into my house. went back out, called the fire dept and ran into get my fire extinguisher but by that time the fire dept was there it took them about 10 min to put the fire out because we couldn't get the hood open and so just when we thought it was out it wasn't. finally when it was out they opened the hood. everything under the hood was destroyed. *tr

I have a 2000 pontiac grand prix gtp and when i put the car into park the key will not come out. i have sat for ten and fifteen minutes at a time trying to get the key to come out of the ignition. it is very frustrating, especially when it is 95 degrees or better outside. it happens about 90% of the time when i drive the car. i have not been to get any parts replaced but i read on an internet blog, where people have the same problem with all different years and makes, that it cost about $400.00 to get the problem fixed. *tr

I was driving home and stopped to let my son out to visit his friend. when he got out of the car i smelled something burning. i got around the corner to my house and my car battery light came on and i coasted into the driveway. at that point there was smoke under the hood and my husband opened it. there were flames under the hood and my husband put out the fire with a hose. we had to replace the alternator and ignition wires, so far. i am not sure what else is damaged at this point. the car had been running fine prior to this. *tr

On 5/15/2008 i purchased a wheel bearing from advanced auto parts for my 2000' pontiac grand prix part # nt513121and installed it the same day as per specifications. on 5/31/2008 my son was driving the car to pick me up from work when he stopped at a traffic light the front wheel had suddenly fell off the car. someone summoned the police and a tow truck. the car was towed to my home and i found that all 5 studs had broken off of the bearing hub. on 6/1/2008 i purchased a new bearing (better quality). at that time i did not return the defective bearing. i returned home and installed the new bearing. on 6/2/2008 when i returned to work i had a rockwell hardness test done on the only remaining stud. we found it only had rc of 22. by the stamping on the stud (10.9 metric) which is equivalent to grade 8 or 33 to 44 r.c. this was a grade 3 case hardened stud which showed a tension break. i then called the manufacturer ntp bearing (1800-322-8983) and told the customer service rep. what had happened. he told me to return the bearing where i purchased it and include my name, address and where i could be contacted for any claim. the reason i am reporting this is if there are more bearings on the market with this defect it could be catastrophic if this happens at any speed. please let me know if ntp follows up. *tr

2000 pontiac grand prix with recall for engine oil leak. mechanic determined that there was a major oil leak. consumer had the head gasket repaired. he then received a recall for this problem. manufacturer will only reimburse partial. *kb the problem was the valve cover gasket which needed to be replaced. the consumer had the repairs made at a local repair shop. gm informed the consumer that only a partial reimbursement would be made because had the dealer performed the repairs, it would have only taken an hour to complete.

In late 2007 my husband and i bought tires for my 2000 pontiac grand prix. we purchased p225/60r16 yokohama avid touring. since our purchase i have had numerous unresolved problems. with less than 30,000 miles on these tires, they have begun to dry rot or crack around the rim. i have tried to contact the sotre where i purchase these tires, they have been of no help. i also have had numerous incidents where the tires fail to hold air. i doubt very seriously my car will ever drive on a set of yokohamas ever again. *ks* *tr

Brake lights went out, bulb and fuse ok, dealer tested and said multi function switch is causing issue although all other lights are fine and functioning. replace multi function switch, bulbs ok. mileage 130,000. *tr

Received recall notice on my 2000 pontiac grand prix for valve cover gasket leak. upon taking it in for inspection by gm dealer found out both valve cover gaskets were defective. the recall notice was for only the front value cover gasket. i took it in and had the repairs done but they would not replace the rear valve cover gaskets even though it leaks. the car only has 49,000 mile on it so i don't feel this should be happening. *tr

There is a recall on the car for leaking rocker cover gaskets which may lead to fires. the recall only covers the front gasket (seemingly because it is cheaper and easier to replace) yet both gaskets leak. the rear gasket is leaking worse than the front but the recall doesn't cover the repair.

There is a strong musty smell, most noticeable in the warmer weather months. have noticed water coming into the front area by drivers right foot and passengers left foot area. i am almost certain that it is coming from the air conditioning. musty smell is most likely from the carpet getting wet and producing the odor. *tr

Received service advisory from pontiac two weeks ago. contacted local pontiac dealer and was told it was not a recall at that point and to wait for the recall notice in the mail. my 2000 pontiac gtp went up in flames this afternoon due to the exact issue outlined in the service advisory. due to pontiacs refusal to correct their safety issue, my car is totaled, and i am out thousands of dollars. through research i discovered , that i am not the only one that has had this happen to them, some 267 cases reported on the internet, many have filed complaints with pontiac and your agency as well, with no results. i am hoping that someone would be willing to help resolve this problem. i am thankful my six year old daughter was not in the car at the time of the fire. i would appreciate your response to this complaint. *tr

2000 pontiac grand prix 3.8l v6 december 10, 2007 observed low coolant during routine oil/filter change. filled coolant reservoir and performed oil/filter change. december 12 callaremi, 385 rt. 46 east hackettstown nj 0784 pontiac: took car for repair of coolant leak. dealer failed to diagnose issue and was told the car was fine. march 15th 2008, low coolant light indicator came on. proceeded to performed routine oil/filter change and added coolant. march 21st 2008, experienced rough start and ticking noise. the noise was constant during cold start and remained after engine reached operating temperature. march 24th 2008, took car back to callaremi for service of engine ticking noise. was told noise was due to a # 3 cylinder intake lifer collapsed and bent push rod. i proceeded to argue that failure to service car according to tsb 03-06-01-016 ¿loss of coolant, milky colored oil caused either excessive wear of the lifter or created hydroloc condition¿. tsb clearly indicates problems with intake gaskets and recommends replacement if coolant loss is not found to be caused by an external link (i.e. probable cause internal coolant leak). repairs for single lifter/rod/rocker arm was $1010.00. *tr

I own a 2000 pontiac gran prix gt. everytime i drive it, the service engine light comes on and the transmission shifts very "hard". this only can be corrected if i pull off the side of the road (which can be very dangerous) and wait several minutes and restart the car. when this happens the rpm's starts to "rev" up and down constantly whether while driving or setting while in park. i have come close to several wrecks when this happens, especially when the roads are wet. before you know it you apply the breaks enough to slow down for the car in front of you and then the rpm "rev" up and you almost hit the car in front of you in the rear. i have read several similar reports and i really don't understand with all the complaints this cannot be recalled to fix this. *tr

Starting with a maf sensor going out, replaced, caused damage to o2 sensors, replaced ,as soon as these went out noticed coolant level drop then the coolant level sensor went out at tank, replaced, next morning at start up a loud kind of knocking took place at start up for 5 to 10 min and very rough idle from 1500-2000 rpm ,po300 random misfire, so i replaced plugs , wires , and coils. now ruff rpm range 1000 to 1500 and still knocking at start up. changing oil and filter after almost every fix to check for water or metal, oil is fine,now a po304 -random misfire on 4th cylynder- but car would clear up for a day or two,also adding injector cleaner and fuel filter to make sure fuel system is ok and using a noid check on each injector all injectors fine, now knocking at start up went away ,but rough idle still percists . still po304 so i check compression on the 4th cylinder and it only has 70-75 lbs. of pressure. so i'm done wasting money bring it to the gilroy pontiac buick gmc for tear down and first they saw a burnt exhaust valve on the 4th cylinder , then noticed the water in the valley tray and head gasket is blown and the intake gasket is leaking and the water pump is leaking the same water pump that went out at 700 miles new. so now the only choice i have is to have the head and valve job done, but the water damage would most likely cause pinging after all that moneys spent so now only choice is to pay almost $4500 for a new motor , problem solved.at 92000 mi

Husband moved the 2000 pontiac grand prix gtp w/ super charger. closer to work site & parked the car, sat & ate lunch in car. the cabin of the car filled with smoke. husband couldn't get doors open, but got the windows to come down. had to crawl out of the windows and realized car was on fire. within 10-15 minutes the car was completely in flames. the firemen had to pry the sides of the hood up to get the fire out. the car was totaled. approximate mileage 121000. *ak

I had a 2000 pontiac grand prix with 120,000 miles, that had been mostly no trouble. we had an extended warranty til 75,000 miles, and all the routine maintenance. when driving home from work (<15miles), i stopped at the grocery store for 20 minutes or less. before i came out, my car was totalled in flames, and 2 fire departments were there dousing my engine. there were no prior leaks/noises/ warning lights. this occurred in broad daylight, 4:30pm, along a major road. my husband is a certified in arson investigation, and stated the fire began at the front left corner of the engine, where the fuel line is. it was more severly melted in that area. we had the comprehensive insurance discontinued about 2 months prior,due to house insurance up a thousand dollars, etc, from the hurricanes, so i had no fire coverage, and am out of a vehicle. i called gm, and they offered to have an "independent investigator" look at it for any possible compensation. ( i did not call them for money, but called to report the incident, for safety reasons). their 'independent investigator' reported it was 'ignited from an outside source, underneath the transmission'. i assure you this extensive fire was not started by a cigarette butt, and i do not have any maffia chasing me to ignite my car. i assure you no one in broad daylight on a major road torched my car. i am very angry with gm for making such a claim. i had a vehicle than ran well and was paid off over a year ago, and was in good condition...ask anyone who i work with or any neighbor. i thank god the car was not in my garage when this happened, or my house would be gone, and maybe us, too. or, on the road in the middle of traffic.

I drove about 3-4 miles from my work to pick up my newborn son from my mother, who was babysitting. i parked my car in the parking lot of the school and went inside (car was not on). i had enough time to use the restroom and change my son's diaper (10 minutes) and we got a phone call from the main office on the 1st floor to tell us that my car was smoking. i ran to the window and saw black smoke billowing from my hood. i ran downstairs to the 1st floor, but by the time i got near enough to see, i could see orange flames underneath the car. i didn't dare go near the car to retrieve my belongings (purse, car seat, cd's, etc) for fear that the flames would spread to the gas tank. by the time the fire department got there, the flames were 5-8 feet high. the car is a total loss, but i have not gotten a quote my insurance company as of yet. *jb

I own a 2000 pontiac grand prix gt about 2yrs. ago my transmission failed on me. my problem was diagnosed by a ase certified master mechanic. i wrote a letter to gm about this problem,which wasn't my only gm transmission i have had replaced within a 5 year time frame .i also had to replace one in a 1990 chevy cavalier z24 that was only about 9 years old at the time and i also had to replace the fuel injectors on that as well but that is a whole other story. i called dealerships to get the proper address of where i could send my letter of dissatisfaction with gm, and it was completely ignored!i didn't ask gm to pay for the whole transmission replacement,just to meet me half way and help a regular guy get to and from work with a dependable vehicle,take care of his family and not be hit with a 2200.00 bill that i am still paying on because i had to put it on a credit card and also get charged interest on top of that. gm,ford and chrysler wonder why they are losing the battle to foreign cars? my personal opinion is this simple:they have higher tolerances when their vehicles are put together resulting in less mechanical failures. don't get me wrong when i first entered the car buying market, i loved and only, bought american cars, but over the years my opinion has been swayed. i also feel that because my problem wasn't diagnosed by a mechanic who was employed by gm,that was just another reason my letter went unanswered. *jb

Windshield wipers will not disburse fluid to the windshield. if i need to clean the windshield, i have to roll window down, spray fluid onto windshield,r oll window back up and all while driving the vehicle. *jb

I am the owner of a 2000 pontiac grand prix and my taillights were both non operative, which resulted in a near miss rear end collision. i learned that the cause of this malfunction was due to a hazard switch that was stuck that takes out the brake lights when this switch malfunctions. i had no idea my lights were out and travel every week end on the interstate. my vehicle was literally an accident waiting to happen. i was one of the fortunate ones that found out before disaster struck. *jb

Vehicle was repaired to cure a hard steering problem. vehicle was having troubles turning to the right. repair shop found the steering rack was leaking. many other owners of this vehicle have also submitted complaints about this same problem. gm should recall this vehicle for this problem. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated that the substance in the electrocromatic rear view mirror had broken down which caused a duplicate view of the object being viewed. the image in the mirror is distorted, and is worse when driven at night. the manufacturer was contacted on 07/17/06 and determined that the vehicle needed to brought to a service dealership. the service dealer was contacted on 07/17/06 and determined that the vehicle needed to inspected by a service representative at a dealership. on 07/19/06, the vehicle was inspected by the dealership and determined that the problem could not fixed, but needed to be replaced with a new rear view mirror. mirror was ordered on 07/21/06 and will be repaired by the owner.

Car started making a cluncking noise. parked car till social security check came in. took car to garage where i found out that i need a sway bar, control arm bushing and tie rod (right side). upon calling for prices, i found out that many cars of this model are having the same problem. i think they got a bad batch of sway bars. being on disability, the cost are outrageous and the repairs have not been made as of yet, leaving disabled people with no transportation for medical care. *nm

Driving home around 5 30 in the evening, exited off the garden state parkway at exit 91. came up to the first light and the service engine soon light came on and flashed a couple of times. after that there was a puff of white smoke that came from the hood. then the light went out. at this point i was about a 1/2 mile from home. as i continued to drive the car began to hesitate. turning onto the street i live off the car died, no steering, no brakes, nothing. i had to forcibly turn the steering wheel, avoiding on coming traffic and luckily without incident steered the car into a vacant rite aid. where i pulled the keys out of the ignition and exited the car. popped the hood and saw a flame spark around the plastic supercharger cover. after seeing the flames i ran as far as possible and called 911. police and fire department arrived shortly after. the car's engine was completely engulfed in flames. i am lucky that i was not injured, imagine if i was traveling on the parkway and the car died out. i might not be typing this letter right now! something for gm to think about. stop the problem now. *nm

Own a 2000 and 2002 model pontiac grand prix gt. both vehicles are having the same problem of key will not come out of ignition due to safety interlock will not activate in park to allow key to be rotated to the fully off position. i am aware this is not a safety concern but i believe since i researched the internet that many of the pontiac grand prix are experiencing this problem and this would be a common defect in the design. *jb

I just purchased my 2000 pontiac grand prix this past january and as i happened to be driving it home from a navy event in front of my husband (thank goodness). he pulled up along side of me on his motorcycle and let me know that i had no brake lights. cruise control also stopped working before this, but i am assuming this all happened at the same time. he is an electronics technician and has spent hours trying to figure out what the heck is wrong. tomorrow i am going to go ahead and call the dealership and have them look at it. i also have surging with light acceleration or at highway speeds with no diagnostics trouble codes. both of these started at the same time, but he knows they are unrelated. *nm

Hazard flasher switch burnt out and caused brake light and horn to become inoperative. none of this was discovered until the time came for state inspection. we believe the car was driven for several months in this condition. *jb the switch was replaced. the old switch is still available. date entered below is date problem was discovered. we believe the problem occurred several months earlier when a passenger noticed a puff of smoke in the car.

Blower motor failed. this is a safety issue, for those of us who live in cold climates and drive through snow and risk the possibility of not being able to remove frozen rain and snow from the windshield while driving. i have been told that there are many grand pries that have had their blowers fail. this should be considered a safety issue and taken seriously, and something should be done so that an already dangerous driving situation (ieee driving in snow) is not made worse when someone else suddenly finds that their blower is no longer working.*ak

Shortly after i bought my used 2000 pontiac grand prix with 52,000 mi. in may 2004, i noticed it was going through an unusually large amount of engine coolant and oil. i took it to 2 different shops after having my low coolant light continuously come on between oil changes. both shops told me that it needed a new intake manifold gasket, which was around $700 to repair due to there being so much labor involved. (and said if i didn't get it fixed, it could lead to my engine overheating and blowing up!) by the time we realized what the problem was, my warranty had also ran out. i got it fixed once the problem was identified in nov. 2004, when the car had 61,000 miles. after doing some research online a few months later, found that this seems to be quite a common problem in pontiac's around that year, once they get to around 50,000 miles. or so (which my car was at when purchased) i don't feel that a 4 year old car with mileage that low should already have such an expensive problem that needs to be fixed, it seems to me that it is a manufacturing problem, they put in faulty, temporary intake manifold gaskets in their cars and they should pay to replace them. *jb

Since the purchase of this car, every time that it rains we have a huge 2-3" puddle of water on the passenger side front floor board. there are numerous forums online with hundreds of people with the same car and the same problem, gm can not continue to ignore this. *jb

3.1l gm v-6 pontiac grand prix se - leaking intake manifold gasket. causes leak out of coolant, migration of coolant to oil and oil to coolant reservoir damaging internal components and hoses as well as running vehicle low on fluid levels and making a general mess of everything around it. gm is fully aware of this defect yet refuses to act on it in the form of a recall. there are numerous tsb's regarding replacement of the gasket with a newer metallic version created due to the fact that the plastic versions in so many gm vehicles fail. a recall is demanded. *nm

My 2000 pontiac grand prix has had two failures of the pressure control solenoid and the corresponding valve body, causing my car to unexpectedly surge when accelerating. the dealership kept both old parts, but this seems to be happening to many people so it shouldn't be hard to find one. both repairs were covered under warranties. the first one was replaced at 32,000 miles, and the second at 73,000 miles. i hope no one has an accident when this happens, i know i almost did, the first time it happened i was so surprised i nearly ran into another car.*jb

Dt: when placing the key in the ignition, the engine will start, but when trying to release the key from the ignition it locks. this results in the battery running down and the inability to the lock car. took car to a dealer in april 2004 and had problem repaired. the dealership replaced the gear shift indicator along with the ignition lock release. a week ago the exact same problem occurred again. did not have any repairs since discovering this.*ak

The vehicle has had a problem with the transmission slipping off and on for about a year. aamco couldn't detect a problem without a check engine light. the light came on in february 2005. the vehicle needed a sensor replaced and there was a error on the transmission also. a complete fluid replacement was done and a conditioner added hoping that this would cure the problem. on june 1 the light came on and the slipping occurred again. it lost merging power on the baltimore beltway and i brought it into aamco for an analysis. they concluded that the torque converter is stuck as well as some additional item. the car is a 2000 pontiac grand prix with 83,000 miles on it. i believe that the power train warranty only covers the vehicle for 80,000 miles. since this has been an ongoing problem prior to the 80,000, i would like to think that gm would assume some liability for the repair ($1900.00). from some of the complaints on your website, i believe that the transmission in this vehicle may be defective in some way.

Dt: the consumer states she was in her vehicle driving on an incline, when she smelled something hot once the vehicle was turned off. smoke was coming from under the hood of the vehicle. the consumer raised the hood. she stated that there was a fire underneath the hood behind the engine while awaiting for response from a local dealership. she also is waiting for someone from pontiac/gm to get back with her within 48 hours. *nm *sc *jb

Dt: the shift is very loose and very dangerous because it won't stay in drive. also, the lower seat heater gets dangerously hot on the lowest setting, so the shop turned it off. the door paneling on all of the doors is also coming off.

The transmission in my 2000 pontiac grand prix gt has been shifting with a "hard" shift after about 30-40 minutes of travel. this usually happens after i have come to a full stop or after a slow turn as if when coming off the freeway and merging into traffic. this goes away after i turn the motor off, wait for approx. 10 min. and restart the motor and at times does not return until i travel for a few miles. *ak

Numerous issues 1. heater core went out around 60,000 miles. 2. dexcool "gelled" and caused the above. 3. stereo has malfunctioned since 36,000 miles. 4. tie rod end wore out around 30,000 miles-took to dealership a couple of times and "they couldn't determine cause" of "noise and rattling". i took it to a tire company/service center and they fixed the problem. 5. numerous interior floodings-water comes in at the firewall and floods the interior carpet-has mold, and deterioration from it. 6. headlamps are yellow and nontransparent-the lights are not working properly because it can't shine through. 7. headlamp assemblies are holding water. 8. fog lamps went out right after purchasing the car and one of them burned the plastic assembly that holds it causing it to not work at all, disfigured now. 9. rear spoiler is not attached correctly and seems to be the cause of water entering the trunk lid.

I wanted to make you aware of a potential safety hazard on the road within gm vehicles. i already had two major transmission repairs on car with about 75,000 miles. the first problem occurred when my car was barely out of warranty, at approximately 42,000 miles. the transmission stopped shifting into overdrive. this forced us to drive 150 miles back home only going 40 mph. this weekend, i experienced a total transmission failure. while driving on the freeway, my car suddenly made a loud noise and decelerated from 65 mph to around 35 mph immediately. the defect almost caused a major accident as we were in the high speed lane. when we got off the freeway and parked, we realized the car would no longer go in reverse. i shelled out almost $1,800 on a rebuilt transmission. my repair shop informed me that they are regularly doing rebuilds on the same gm transmission that is in my pontiac. a common sign on the failure is the loss of the reverse gear. in fact, parma transmission had done three alone during the week my car was in the shop. i am shocked that gm would install such a faulty and dangerous piece of machinery on its vehicles. i hardly find it coincidental that all of these owners are having the same problems with your cars. please be sure not to group this problem just with pontiac. they put the same transmission in many of their cars, so you will need to figure out all the vehicles that are under this part number. i did not keep the old parts, but i am sure the shop i work with would be able to start saving all of the destroyed components that they continually repair. *nm

I do not even know where to start. i purchased a 2000 pontiac grand prix in may 2000. since then i have had numerous problems and have seemed to get nowhere. first, about six months after i purchased the vehicle my transmission decided to go out so the dealership decided to replace it. (this should ahve been my first indication to take the car back) second, a few months after this i started to have problems with my heads up display. i had to take the vehicle into the dealership on 3 to 4 different occasions before they decided to do anything about it. finally, they did replace one of the parts. this still did not work. i had to take the car back and they decided to replace the projector. my heads up display is still not working. i have tried to contact pontiac numerous times about this both at the dealer level and the customer service department for pontiac but have had no response. also, i have been experiencing a leakage into the vehicle of what appears to be water. this has been occuring since about the second year i have had my vehicle. everytime it rains it seems to gather within the ac system and then obstructs air from entering the vehicle. i have also tried calling the pontiac customer service department about this problem with no response. abut the same time i started experiencing problems with the fuel sensor. at this time,i was tired with dealing with the dealer and getting nothing done so i decided to leave it in the hands of pontiac customer service. now for the final straw, my drivers side window regulator has gone out. i am tired of having to put up with these sort of things and getting no response from pontiac. i know my warranty is now up but for the things that i have reported prior to the warranty expiring i feel that they should take care of. these are safety issues and i feel that they should be held liable. all these problems have been occuring since 2000.*ak

I have had to replace two of the motors for my windows (one of them in a rear window which is never even used!). i work with 5 other people that have had at least two-four motors go out on their pontiacs also. this appears to be a recurring problem with pontiac and has caused me to reconsider buying a new grand prix.

I was west heading on i-4 toward orlando, florida when my firestone p215 70r15 fr 680 unraveled. the radial treaded part of the tire s;apped against the car with such an impact it crushed the corner panel.

My car caught fire 6-5-03. general motors sent an investigator out. on 7-2-03 i received a call from gm. they told me the report was my problem they would not take any responsibilty for the fire. i drove my car aprox. 15 miles that morning to my kids daycare. i pulled up to the front of the daycare and cut the car off and it started smoking and flames came from under the hood. everything under the hood is melted no brake lines, fuel line or wires. i have not done anything to the car but change the oil. the oil was last changed aprox. two months before that. cars are not designed to just catch fire. i put my kids and a daycare full of kids in jeopardy that day. just to add a little to my complaint. i have left about 6 messages since july 3 for the gm rep, kevin drew, to call me without success. when i purchased my car it only had 51,000 miles. i had trouble with bill heard dealership from day i drove the car off the lot it had problems. it took 4 months (1) the pistons was making awful noise. (2) the security light was flashing (3) the cig. lighter had a burning smell when pushed in. i have a copy of the complaints , findings and action taken on a service report provided by bill heard. in that report it states that they found burnt and melted wire they removed the wiring harness and replaced wires. i left a message for kevin drew asking him to call me because i know for a fact that the wire going to the fuse box was melted. everything under the hood is melted no wires, brake line or fuel line exist anymore. the region of the fire is the area of all the wires, computer box etc. in the middle of the hood at the center up toward the top close to the windshield.. this happened at a daycare. i was parked no more than 3 feet from the building.

First i could not shift out of park. stepping on the breake should allow the lever on the shift lever to depress allowing me to shift into drive. this was an intermittent problem at first. next, came the key problem within a week or two. i could not turn the key back to it's home position in order to take it out. after much research i learned that i could stick a pen or other pointed object up under the steering column to realease the key. i also need to depress the shift lock release next to the shift lever in order to get the car out of park. within 3-4 weeks this problem went from intermittent to the point where it happens every time now. i have found numerous reports online of other grand prix owners who report the same problem. i will not buy another grand prix now for fear of the newer models having the same problem.

I first had problems with my brakes at 19,000 had to have the from rotors turned and new napa brake shoes, this was done at a certified napa repair shop. the cost was approx. 175.00. then about 35000 miles i started having trouble stopping so i took it to another napa shop and he told me the rotors front and rear needed to be replaced along with new brake shoes all around. i replaced both rotors and shoes and now am experiencing the same problem at 43000 miles. i need to know who i can contact since this problem is not going to get better and it is getting very expensive.

Check engine light came one. car was shifting hard and "jerking." pulled in to a nearby repair shop and two diagnostic codes were found relating to the transmission. one related to the pressure control solenoid and the other "long shift w/ max adapt". they suggested i take it to a transmission shop. i then took the vehicle to my regular mechanic, he could not duplicate the problem nor could he find anything wrong at that time. he also suggested i take it to a shop specializing in transmissions. i did. they also could not duplcate the problem or find anything other than metal shavings in the pan. they suggested i have the transmission completely rebuilt at a cost of over $2,100.00.*ak

I have a 2000 grand prix with a 3.1 liter engine. it has the typical "upper/lower manifold leak". the symptoms are slight smell of burning coolant, temp gauge not steady, in cooler days it doesn't get up to 180 degrees, on hot days it goes to 220. also low coolant light every week, needs coolant in resovoir. also has a crusty orange buildup in resovoir and radiator cap. i discussed with gm customer care and i have to pay a dealer to fix. then submit a reimbursement claim. the agent for gm/pontiac said he would cover the first half and work to get more...but no premise's. while researching on the web, it seems that a lot of issues with the gm product intake manifold is an ongoing issue. i believe i should not have to pay for any of this repair due to the significant number of complaints and defect investigation. *jb

As i was turning left onto a street power steering seemed to give out. i had to straighten the wheel out and turn again. i took the car home to see what was the problem. when i turn the wheel to the left it gets very tough, turning to the right is fine. i took the car to a mechanic and to the dealership and the both said that the rack and pinion was leaking. the car only has 55,000 miles on it, there should be no way that this should be happening. i contacted a gm representative, after stringing me a long for two weeks, they finally told me that since i did not purchase an extended warranty there is nothing that they could do to help. also when contacting the representative, they often did not call back in the time frame they said they were going to.*ak

While driving 35 mph vehicle stalled in the middle of the highway. after several attempts to restart the vehicle consumer called for a tow truck. dealer examined the vehicle, and determined that a new transmission was needed. *ak

Transmission was rebuilt/replaced at 27,000 miles (this was under warranty). now at 86,000 miles transmission had to be rebuilt due to a gasket blow that caused all the fluid to leak out which then caused internal problems. this is a very costly defect that i feel may have to do with a defect from the manufacturer. a $28,000 car should not have a major defect of this magnitude twice before it even reaches 100,000 mile. this should be investigated by gm because i am now seeing that i am not the only one with this problem. gm should have to pay for this expensive repair. *la

While in the passing lane, the consumer drove over some gravel in the road. the driver lost control of the vehicle and hit two trees. the front air bags did not deploy. the driver's head became caught between the steering wheel and the dashboard causing injuries to the neck and back. please provide further details. *jb

My 2000 grand prix has had the window cables repaired on the passanger side, now the driverside must be repaired, due to cable inside the door breaking. this repair cost $430.00 each time!*ak

Car has erratic shifting, jerks when accelerating. taken to dealership and diagnosed as pressure control solenoid. when the trans pan was taken off there was significant amounts of metal shavings. the trasnmission was then taken apart and found that the clutch and many gears were damaged because of the metal. gm was contacted for assistance and they said they wouldn't guarantee there defective parts because they can not determine how the previous owner took care of the car.*ak

The intake manifold gasket on my 2000 grand prix se (3.1 litre v6 - 60,000 miles) has begun to leak. i keep up to date on maintenance of my car regularly, and it has never been subjected to any extreme condition. i observed no noticeable puddles of coolant around my car or in the garage it is kept in. the problem first revealed itself while driving at expressway speeds (55mph) for about 5-10 minutes into my trip. the engine coolant low light came on, then the temperature reading began to rise sharply within 5 seconds (nearly to redline). upon investigation on the spot, nothing was found. no puddles, no wet coolant around the engine. mechanics could not find the problem at this point, even running the engine and cooling it repeatedly. i continued to drive with the replaced coolant thinking it was a one time thing. then i begin noticing puddles, and the coolant is leaking out rather rapidly now (allowing the mechanic to finally find the problem). once i found that it was the intake gasget, i found thousands of other owners of vehicles with the same and similar engine have the exact same problem. due to the sudden nature of the symptoms of the problem, and due to widespread occurance of this issue on relatively low mileage cars, i find this to be a very dangerous and expensive problem that seem to happen to even the most well maintained cars. if i had not seen the temperature reading rising (as i'm sure most people dont watch their temp guage) i would not have known there was a problem and continued driving, this problem could have directly caused my vehicle to fail at high speed and no longer be under control endangering me and possibly many other safe drivers on the road.

The stereo/clock display fades to be extremely dim and unreadable. this occurred at 28000 mi, which resulted in my dealer replacing the stereo. it has again occurred at 54000 mi. *la

Steering binds at low speeds when turning left. research shows that this was a recall in 1996, 1997, 1998 with the cause being an improperly installed retainer in the lower bearing area of the pinion.

Engine cooling-smell of engine coolant-two visits ago my car was taken to dealer to fix the recall for coolant leak problem-upper manifold. month or two later i returned to the dealer for a routine oil change, and to correct a "service engine soon light." dealer informed me that my car "needed new thermostat." thought this was a normal condition-but even after recall fixed my car "smelled like engine coolant!" my car has never missed a required service--i "over-service" my car! the needed service completed by dealer replacing thermostat, bad temperature sensor, and required routine oil change. after picking up the car from the dealer-my car overheated-blowing smoke out of the hood. it smelled like coolant, i thought car was going to burn up! i had to have car towed to dealer-where dealer informed me-they spilled coolant-and that the coolant spilled was smoking!--i think there is a huge problem with the cooling system with this series engine. i feel that gm is covering up a larger problem with the 3800 series engine-i am afraid that this condition will cause more damage-i feel that gm does not want to admit there is a large problem, and simply fix my car! -rather the dealer states "there is nothing wrong." i like my car, and just want it fixed right. i am afraid the damage has been done--it is one oil change out of the original warranty-i feel that i am stuck with a lemon.--ebrock *la

The motor for the drivers side passenger window went out. it's been going bad for a while and now it finally quit for good. at 3 years old i don't think i should have to replace this so soon. and the fan for the air conditioner (a/c) will run on its own without the car even running, can't get it to stop unless you take the fuse out. *la

Main complaint: gm is aware that their gm hydra-matic 4t65-e transmission has a defective part, yet they leave it to consumers to cover the cost of handling the problem. specifically, my 2000 grand prix gt (with only 64,000 miles on it) started upshifting hard a few days ago from 1st to 2nd gear and i hear metallic grinding noises from underneath the car when shifting from 1st to 2nd while the car is still warming up. having performed all of the necessary maintenance over the years, i am angered to learn that i will have to fork over approximately $600 to repair a manufacturer's defect on a car that i am still paying for. i've read of other people having to pay significantly more to fix this problem on their cars. recently, gm repaired a coolant leak at no cost to consumers because it was deemed a defect. i had already experienced "low engine coolant" warnings from my car and was relieved to receive the recall letter offering to fix the problem for free. of course, that repair took 15 minutes - gm didn't mind picking up the cost for that defect. my current problem will require several hours of transaxle work and gm has conveniently stuck me with the cost of this work. i also wonder why consumers are not being alerted to this problem. some people may not notice or may choose to ignore the symptoms that i noticed until the other day until they have a catastrophic problem and have to pay thousands to repair their transaxle. it seems irresponsible to me that gm only issued this information as a service bulletin to mechanics. other minor complaints: my car intermittently had trouble starting around 45000 miles. two mechanics checked it and found nothing wrong. my kid brother found a loose wire coming from the battery and quickly fixed the problem. currently, i have lost levels 1-3 of 5 for my heating/cooling fan, my windshield wiper fluid pump has stopped working and the lock on my trunk is inoperable. i'm not careless - these materials should have lasted much longer. *la

Problem with bouncing front end originally. had wheels balanced, didn't fix problem. then hard to turn as if power steering wasn't working and also a clunking noise when turning the steering wheel. first they replaced a tie rod assembly, but this did not correct the hard steering problem. had to leave the vehicle at the dealer for more than a week for them to get parts to fix the rack and pinion steering. also had a problem with water inside my heater/ac causing an accumulation of water and malfunctioning of the fan and causing water on the passenger side floor. have also had to have a side mirror motor replaced. i fortunately have an extended warranty. i purchased my vehicle new in feb 2000. i only has 25,000 miles on it and there sure has been a lot of things happening to it. i have also had water leaking into the trunk which was a bad seal around the rim of the trunk and spoiler and a leak near my sunroof which was unable to be diagnosed. *la

2000 pontiac grand prix gtp has 42,000 miles. we purchased this vehicle new in january of 2000. no sign of transmission failure. going from a stop loud clanking noise, car jerked 3 or 4 times. 5 minutes later after another stop sign the car did the same thing again. i stopped to a repair station, when i put the car in park it makes an awful grinding noise while idling. the service technician took the car for a drive and said to get it to a gm dealer because the transmission is going. i was told this should not have happened on a car that only has 42,000 miles on it. as i am looking through the consumer affairs complaint data base i am seeing 9 complaints that are quite similar. how many complaints does it take till this transmission problem is recalled? i paid $27,000.00 for my car 3 1/2 years ago and should not have to put $2,000.00 into it already. i purchase new cars simply because of feeling secure knowing that i take care of my cars with regular oil changes and maintenance and would not have to worry about any major repairs. i would like this resolved by gm repairing my vehicle at their expense. *la

I have a 2000 pontiac grand prix with 40,000 miles on it. it has lost the 1st and 2nd level for the interior fan, and the 3rd level is now losing function. i know of other gm cars that have had the same problem: losing the fan level by level from the lowest speed upward. this is a progressing problem. are there any similar complaints? *la

I have a pontiac grand prix gt, my service engine soon light continously comes on. i went to the dealership and they put the car on the computer and said that the wires to the harness were broken. i don't understand how the wires to the harness could be broken because in order to get to the wires you must take off three parts.they also told me i had a leak in the intake manifold at the top of the engine. the mechanic changed the gasket and charged me $270 plus $50 for parts and payed $360 for the labor for the wires of the harness. the light turned off, then the next day the light reappeared. i went back to the dealership and the same code came up when it was placed back on the computer (r442), on that day they said the gas cap was leaking and had to be changed. at that moment the light went off! then the next day the light came back on once again!!! now this is the third time i've been to the dealership with the same code (r442) they told me they don't know what the problem is. if they can't find the problem why do i have to pay for the previous problems if they can't even find the problem. the will not help me and since these problems occured right after the warranty, they told me that i have to pay for all the work they that do, even if they just put the car on the computer. $90 an hour! i've called customer service repeatedly and say that can't do anything for me because the dealership will not work with me! they are also finding a transmission code 1811 they say they don't fix transmissions!! what do i do??? the light will not turn off and i'm worried for my saftey! please help!

In cold weather the windshield wipers get stuck in an upright resting position. also the steering rack and pinon have faulty bearings causing it to feel like the power steering is not working when you turn a sharp left.

I had my wiring harness catch fire on 2-2-03 without warning. gm inspecting and i am still waiting on their report. however, after picking up the car from repairs on 2-15-03, i drove the car 2-15 and 2-16 and to work on 2-17. upon returning to my car to start it, it would start and then die immediately. i had to have the car moved to the dealer. no warnings, no problems, no lights to tell me what might be the problem.

I own a 2000 pontiac grand prix, it suffered a coolant leak in the upper manifold section. after some research locally and from personal family experience. i believe some pontiac v6 suffers from either defective gaskets and or faulty assembly that cause a leak to develop after 2-3 years of useage which is unacceptable for a new car purchase and pontiac offering no service bulletins/recalls on this issue. our family has suffered 4 such failures including 2- grandprix's (1999 & 2000 models) , grand am (1997), sunfire (1997) among numerous other failures in my general location. i would ask your agency to look further into this potential problem and reckify the situation

A fire around the ignition coil began in my car with no warning. no repairs had been completed and the car was driving fine. the fire errupted quickly. it would seem that there is some issue or there should have been some warning that a problem was present if this was due to "wear and tear". it seems unlikely this would be a wear and tear problem as no problems or indications of any problems were existent prior to this fire.

2000 pontiac grant prix gt bought in august 2000, problems include: 1) 22-july-2002, (36,040 miles), tie rod worn badly, had excessive clearance and needed to be replaced. 2) 30-september-02, (38,697 miles), serpentine belt (i understand general maintenance for this particular problem). 3) 21-oct-2002, (39,181 miles), replaced intake manifold. in the 3 incidents above, i understand changing a serpentine belt when needed, but for my tie rod to be worn and replaced within 2 yrs of owning this vehicle is not a normal maintenance item for a practically brand new car. the intake manifold being replaced around the same time is just unheard of. the intake manifold's from what i understand from the gm dealer are made of plastic, which then i was told that plastic is a better "heat sink" than metal is! i am an engineer and work with metals and plastics all the time and know for sure that metal is a much better heat sink than plastic is. plastic melts with heat! my car repeatably stalls at red lights, stop signs, turning corners, and sometimes just stalls when i'm driving down the road. i really shouldn't have to keep bringing my car for repairs, it's practially brand new and i pay nearly $400/month to have these on going problems! currently my driver side rear brake caliper is bent and was told that it's going to cost me $500 to replace 2 calipers (because i guess one just can't be replaced without replacing the other back one) . i take good care of my car, with regular cleanings, oil changes and general maintenance. i'm weary of taking my car on extended trips out of town for the fear that it's going to leave me stranded. if there is any way, i could get a response from you asap, it would be very much appreciated. thanks very much for your time and consideration. sincerely, robert sweeney

We purchased this 2000 grand prix gt from another individual in july 2015. engine caught fire on 10/20/2015 while parked in the driveway at our residence. neighbors alerted us (5-10 minutes after returning home from a five mile drive to enjoy a 35 minute meal) that the car was on fire. flames were evident below the engine. we were able to control the fire with help from our neighbor, using two home extinguishers. the troy, oh fire dept responded; ensured the fire was completely out and car was safe to leave (cut wires on battery). discovered gm recall no. 09047 & gm recall no. 07035 as well as nhtsa recall #07e-21 indicating issues which may result in an engine fire.

Dirve unit made a loud knocking sound twice while accelerating from a stop light. the vehical jerked badly twice, so hard i thought i had been hit in the rear end. if other cars were following behind they could have hit the car because thie jerking was so violent the car had suddenly stopped and then accelerated several times, without any brake light warning. after initial incident, metal grinding and knocking noises from the underside of the vehicle were heard. this metal knocking sound is not a constant noise. dealer repair is wright pontiac in wexford, pa. after one week of having still not sure what is wrong. will tear down the power train today to identify exact cause. *ak

A rattling noise occurred in the front suspension system when driving over a washboard surface. i returned it 5 times to the dealer and they worked on it 5 times. they replaced the complete front strut assembly (the coil spring, shock, strut bushing 2 or 3 other times, applied grease several times etc). after several days or a week or so it would start rattling again. the last repair was performed on june 26, 2001 in which the both strut assemblies was replaced. my concern is if the wear of the rattling parts causes a failure to suspension which could cause a wreck. please advise concerning this . thank you. *ak

Speed is a question because the car was struck from an oncoming car averaging somewhere between 35- 45 mph while i was just starting to put my foot on the gas pedal when we collieded. neither air bags deployed in my car. i would like to send digital images of the exterior and interior of the car. please let me know where i can e-mail or send by post office the photos. the estimated damage is about $8,000.-$10,000. in damages. the final report has not yet been filed. the car was not totaled, but should be on the fact that their is apparently a defect in the airbags. i have consulted with an automotive designer ( from ford, previously from gm) who has viewed the photos and has stated that an investigation should be done and that the car is not unrepairable, but the defective airbags should make the car totaled.

My 6 yr. old daughter got her neck caught in the seatbelt after undoing it to hand me an ice cream cup. i heard her murmur and looked back, she was strangling and could not talk. i slowed the car carefully in order to keep the belt from tightening around her neck any tighter and got out to help her. i was unable to help her because the belt was automatically tightening and would not release. a man in another vehicle stopped and asked if i needed help. he had a knife and we had to cut the seatbelt off my child. by that time, my daughter had not been able to breathe or speak. she ended up with cervical abrasions, a vertabra out in her neck, and we had to watch her for closed head injury symptoms. i do not want this to happen to another child. if there would have been a release lever to release the tension on the shoulder part of the belt, she could have easily been freed. if i hadn't have heard her murmur or if a man did not stop with a knife, my daughter would have strangled to death. i am reporting this to the car manufacturer and also to the consumer products safety commission. i attempted to get a police report taken but i was told rather rudely by the state police and the local sheriff's office that they would not take a report on such a thing. more or less what they were telling me is that my daughter's life is not important enough to make a report about. i have no ud-10 from the police but i do have the doctor's notes and pictures of my daughters neck and the cut seatbelt. i also have a statement from the man who cut the belt. thank you for your time. *ak

I was registered with pontiac for recall notification. i was never notified about this seatbelt replacement campaign. i found out about it when the vehicle was taken to liberty pontiac last week for an unrelated problem. when i called the pontiac recall hotline, they admitted that they had no explanation as to why i was not notified. had i not taken the car in for unrelated repairs, i would have been driving with defective seatbelts.*ak

Vehicle has gone to dealership 5 times in a 2 month period. service engine soon light comes on every time. 1/23/01 inspected vehicle, found dtc p0446. evap solenoid and checked pressure, found 1.12 out of specs, removed the pressure sensor and replaced. retested ok, 01/25/01 found dtc p0446 evap. vent, contacted tac. tac advised to replace the sensor again. removed the sensor and replaced. retested ok 02/08/01 found terminal 55 was backed out of connector at ckt 890 for the pcm. also found the evap canister was excessively heavy, found the canister was holding fuel in the assembly. repaired the terminal on connector at ckt 890 and reassembled. replaced the evap canister and retested ok 02/22/01 protective shield put on due to wire harness chaffing against the mounting ring on the a/c accumulator. installed protector. bul #00-06-04-049. *ak

In the owners manual on page 2-93, under the "range" section, it states: range:shows how much farther you can travel with the fuel you have before refueling. when the range displays "l" for 40 to 50 miles (64.36 to 80.45km), the display will flash the word low continuously and the vehicle will chime three times. the range is calculated from the average econ value times the fuel remaining in the tank.".....the problem is, the car will chime once sometimes when it gets to "low" and most of the time it will not chime at all. the same happens with the doors. if the car's engine is running, and a door is opened, it should chime. most of the time it will not chime at all. other times it might chime once. i have had the car to the dealership 4 times and even wrote a letter to gm. on the third attempt to resolve the problem they replaced the body control module but the problem persists. now they are stating that there is no problem, and that i do not need to have anyone look at it. they are refusing to even look at my car to fix it. in my opinion, the fact that it chimes sometimes and not others under the same conditions indicates that the product/system is faulty. *ak

This vehicle has had 2 ground wiring shorting out at engine repaired, a leaking gas tank replaced,it has loss power on me 7 times to this date, the heater blower motor malfunctioned, the passenger seat belt has malfunctioned, the headlights flicker, it has had a miss fire on all 6 cylinders twice, a spark plug, the coil pack, & a spark plug wire quit at the same time tha brake pedal has been going all the way to the floor every since i bought the car, the trip computer has malfunctioned twice etc.
