I have a defective engine that leaks coolant into the engine and causes overheating after a half hour when my car is driven. Constant restarting has affected my battery.

the car is a total problem. I can’t afford to fix – two weeks after buying it, the power steering pump broke in my engine no one would up hold warranty and the car is a lemon my windows are now permanently up

Well, first off, I have nt gotten my car repaired yet, this just happened. After my car overheated on me, I thought it was the thermostat. I had a friend come to show me where the thermostat was so I could change it and he pointed out a puddle of Dex-Cool and he said based on where the puddle was it was either a cracked or blown head or it was my manifold intake gasket was faulty. After hat, I read up on it and found out that this is a very common problem in my car and GM will do nothing do compensate consumers for it even though it is their manufacturing defect. If a class actin law suit gets filed I want to make sure I am in on it!

Also when driving down the road sometimes it will stall and not restart.

Time after time the vehicle will have a no crank no start condition and most of the time will eventually start. Has a new battery, cable ends are new, and after having it towed to the dealership because it would not start after 20 attempts I am out about 484.00 because the problem the dealership said was causing the condition came back the next morning after the dealership supposively repaired it. It is now on the weekend and am waiting until Monday to call the dealership with yet again a no start condition. This can be very unsafe because I can be many miles from home when this happens as it had and might end of costing me many more dollars. I had a friend look at the sunroof and said it was the switch. it worked again for a few days then the sunroof would only partially open again. I gave up on that. I have only owned this vehicle since December 2006 and it is now February 2007 and am very unhappy because of these conditions.

Three of the four power windows have broken. I’ve had them all checked and when we take them apart there are pieces of cheap plastic all over the place. NOTHING in the window mechanism is built to last more than a couple of years, I’ve been told by multiple window specialists.Also, there is a “security” light that comes on every couple of weeks that shuts down the entire start-up system. It’s starts flashing red and I have to sit in my car for about 20 minutes and wait for it to stop so I can turn the car on. Of course, I’ve had the car checked and they can’t seem to figure out why it’s going off.Finally, my turn signals fail while I’m driving. Isn’t that great!

This Alero was purchased for a daughter who was going away to college so her parents would not have to worry about breakdowns. The fuel pump/fuel sending unit has failed twice and left her stranded. The dash and doors are peeling up and look terrible. The contols for the power mirros no longer work. The company is not interested in hearing about our problems. I am so digusted with thei GM products and will stick to companys who not only take pride in what they build but also will show true customer service.

These problems are ongoing, impacting at least one situation at a time. On a monthly basis I have to replace 3 relays, and approx 6 fuses. I have brought it in for service several times, and no one can fix it for me. Please advise if you have any solution. thanks, Perry

There were so many problems that it is hard to list them all. Now the driver\’s side window will not go down, my turn signal doesn\’t work and the paint is chipping off of hte spoiler.

There are several other items that were replaced and then failed again. The stereo has been replaced two times, once for a tape getting stuck and the second a CD getting stuck (Warranty). I continually have problems with the brakes. the dash was replaced under warranty, now it needs to be replaced again and the air bag assembly on the passenger side needs replacing. The water pump was replaced and then the intake gasket had to be replaced (Not warrantied)

The vinyl on the dashboard is rippling and I am told it will eventually peel off. No satisfaction has been given to repairing this, even though I was willing to pay 1/3 of the cost out of my own pocket.Shame on GM!!

The most recently problem I have with Alero is the power window on the passenger side needs a regulator. It’s been put on order. But I was told that a lady ordered the same thing over a month ago still did not getting it. And there is national back order on this item and no one is producing it for the time being. Now I’ve been driving the car with window taped over a month. Same problem happen to the power window on the driver side twice during the warrenty period of time. As far as I’m concerning this should be recall item with the fact that it happened so often. It’s a manufacturer’s defects.

The leather on my dashboard has bubbled and the leather surrounding my airbag has unglued and bubbled as well.

The intake manifold gaskets had to be replaced. If left alone, the leak would have ruined the engine which would have cost 2000.00 or more.

The fan switch for the air conditioning and heating quit working on the lowest two settings. Dealership replaced a resistor.The fuel pump nearly stopped working and wouldn\’t start the car if it was at a quarter tank or less. Dealership replaced the fuel pump.The drivers side power window regulator broke and the window was inoperable. The dealership replaced the entire regulator assembly.The brakes pads have worn out three times and I\’ve replaced the rotors once since I got the car new.The intake manifold gaskets had to be replaced because the car was leaking coolant through them. The dealership replaced the gaskets.

The dashborad peal back and buckled, could not fix it causing loss in total worth of vehicle.

The car over heats when sitting still or in traffic. You also have to add anti-freeze every other day. Every garage that I have spoke to says the Aleros are notorious for the intake going bad. After several attempts of fixing the Alero the problem has not gone away. I am sure the car dealer was aware of the problem. I also have had problems with the interior and exterior lights.

The car always has some problem. Have stuck over a thousand into fixing it and have only had it for about 6 months and it only has 60,000 miles on it. Have heard of other cars going well over the 200,000 mile mark and I am curious if I will make it to 100,000

SOMETHING IS DRAINING THE POWER FROM MY BATTERY. THE PICTURE OF A BATTERY COMES ON SEVERAL TIMES A DAY WHILE DRIVING IN A FEW DAYS THE BATTERY WILL BE DEAD I CAN GO NOWHERE UNTIL I CHARGE THE BATTERY. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO TWO SHOPS AND THEY BOTH TOLD ME THEY CAN FIND NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG HAVE YOU ANY EXPERIENCE WITH REPORTS OF THIS DIFFICULTY?THE EXSELLERATOR STUCK ONE NIGHT AND PUTTING MY BREAKS ON TO STOP GOING SO FAST TORE UP THE BRAKES. I LOOKED UNDER THE HOOD AND PULLED THE STUCK WIRE OUT AND IT RAN NORMALLY.I WAS ALSO SOLD THIS CAR BY A DEALER THAT KNEW OF ITS PROBLEMS AND TOLD ME NOTHING.I WOULD RATHER GET RID OF THE CAR THAN JOIN A CLASS ACTION SUITE.

Security light comes on and car will not start until after about 15 minutes.Dash is warped and bubbled.Power windows on drivers and passengers side only work sometimes.Turn signals only work sometimes, and is somehow tied to the hazard. When turn signals aren’t working, I can sometimes quickly turn off and on the hazard lights and make it work again.The dome light has fallen out several times.

Purchased my 2000 Alero in ’01 with about 25K miles. Since then, I’ve had the following:Rear defrost failedDome light fellPassenger window fell, no longer able to open/closeIntake gasket issue (not just once…but twice)Tires not holding air & lights constantly coming onLighter/adapter faultyLeaking/disappearing coolant with light constantly onCruise control faulty (twice)Lastly, while driving at 65mph the car just lost all power and stopped. Then it would start again, and stall. After a series of frightening drives just to get the car home, was able to get it to the mechanics, who were finally able to duplicate the problem and determine the fuel pump was shutting down, for no apparently reason. It’s $800 to fix, and with the other $800 to fix the intake gasket AGAIN!

OTHER = Peeled dashboard. It has a wrinkled look and is peeled very far back to the driver sterring wheel. I did nothing abnormal to cause this.I am also concerned about the gasket issue that I heard so much about with the Alero verhicle.

My engine leaks oil very bad and there is also a coolant leak. I have to replace my brakes every 2 months and the engine is currently knocking. I purchased a Smart Choice 2000 warranty that no one is honoring and I can\’t afford to fix my car. I am a hard working college student. I can\’t afford school and repairs that should have been covered under my warranty. PLEASE SEND ME ANY INFO ON A CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT AGAINST THE SMARTCHOICE 2000 WARRANTY COMPANY. MY DASH ON MY CAR IS RIPPLING AND PEELING OF THE DASH. MY DOOR PANELS ARE COMING UNGLUED FROM THE DOOR. MY BRAKE CALIPERS SOUND VERY CLUNKY AND I HAVE LOST BOLTS OFF OF THEM WHEN DRIVING.WHEN ADDING GAS CAN BARELY ADD GAS TO IT IT HAS PRESSURE AND HAVE TO ADD SLOWLY. CAN NOT LET TANK GO BELOW THE 1/2 MARK OR IT WILL NOT START. I AM ASSYMING I HAVE TO PAY 300.00 FOR A NEW FUEL PUMP. MY SEATS NO LONGER ADJUST THE SWITCH DOES NOT WORK

My coolant light came on. I checked and added coolant. A couple of days later I noticed a pool of coolant in my driveway. Upon further inspection it is the lower intake manifold gasket – apparently a cost problem and a common one (due to a design flaw) on a number of GM vehicles. I have not fixed the problem as of yet – I am waiting to see if anything can be done.

My air conditioning and heat only works if fan is on high, I have chosen to just live with it since spending money on that type of thing is not a priority in comparison with fixing other problems on the car. this month my battery died and there was never any warning prior to. I got stuck at a gas station after the car just died after I cut it off to pump gas. Thank god for my AAA membership, the guy came out and informed me that my battery was dead. Replacement was 75.00. My brakes lights have now failed, I replaced all of the bulbs and fuses still the brake lights are either continuously on when the other lights come on or if the other lights are out the brake lights just don’t work. My turn signal also does not work and I am told by 7 delaerships in my area that they won’t honor the recall or my warranty because they won’t be able to collect. I will have to pay out of pocket, not sure how much but I know I have to absord the cost because the car is no longer safe without these things.

My 2000 Oldsmobile Alero developed a coolant leak that I traced to the intake manifold gasket. There is indication of coolant in the oil system. There is a TSB out that defines the problem as a defective design for the gasket. I talked to GM Customer service and had the car diagnosed at a GM service department to verify my claim. They only offered 40% due to the mileage on the vehicle even though the gasket design is bad. I will have the vehicle repaired elsewhere and try to recover the money from GM through small claims court.

most of the issues above have not been single instances. also, the dash has come unglued and we are having a problem with the car stalling for no reason at any speed (i.e. doing 50 mph on rte 1 and it shuts off) mirrors on drivers side do not always work, cd player allows condensation to build on cd’s , seat belt stops have popped off meaning that i have to reach down below the seat to pull up the buckle. Power seat on drivers side does not work. We have not fixed most of this because we can’t afford the charges.

Lower intake manifold gasket failure causing leakage of coolant into the engine and onto pavement. This type of gasket failure is unacceptable at such low miles.August Update: Since filing the complaint, I had the intake manifold gasket replaced (along with the other gaskets, seals, and rings that are typically replaced in this procedure) by the Olds Dealer here in my area. This was done at mileage 51947 on 2/11/03 for my 2000 Olds Alero that was purchased new on 7/6/2000. As for cost, I was able to do some negotiating with the service manager. About one month earlier, I had taken the car in to get the drivers side window repaired. It had fallen out of track (for the second time), and I raised the issue that this was unacceptable, and that their competitor cars do not do this (non GM vehicles). Having negotiated a low price on this window repair, the service manager remembered me for the intake manifold repair. I raised a number of issues and facts surrounding the intake manifold gasket and was able to get the entire repair done for $276.75, along with an oil change and serpentine belt replacement, included. I have not noticed and problems with coolant leakage since the repair was preformed. Another concern that I have is, since my repair was done in February 2003, but the service bulletin is dated March 2003, were old parts used in my repair and will this happen again?

It started with blower relay going out. It seems to go out every spring in the last three years. Wheel bearings went bad at 73000 miles covered under extended warrenty. At 94000 miles lower intake gasket went out.

I recently purchased the car so I am not sure about the exact milage and years the problems first occured but they were present when I purchased the car, except for the engine faliur. I was driving on a higheway at 65 mph and blew a piston. The car and engine only had 55k miles on it. I was also wundering if you know of any recalls on this. It was the 4 cylinder 2.4L inline 4.

I own a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero and I am experiencing the same problems with my car as many others. I bought my car used and it was at 39,000 miles and was out of manufacturer

I haven\’t kept complete records of the repairs. All of the expenses have been out of my pocket and some things I haven\’t bothered to get fixed. I have hit 2 deer this year and neither time did the airbag deploy. I replace brake pads and rotors approximately every 6 months. All of my miles are hwy, I drive 90 mi round trip for work 5-6 days a wk. The calipers have also been replaced. I am now replacing the hubs for the 3rd time. I tried to trade in this fall and was offered $1500 on a car that has a trade in value of $6000 (according to my bank). Please help us Alero owners get a % of our purchase price of this lemon back.

I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS PROBLEMS WITH MY ALERO. I BOUGHT THE CAR USED AND FROM DAY ONE I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS WITH IT. THE PAINT HAS COME OFF COMPLETELY AROUND THE DRIVERS DOOR AND REAR DRIVER SIDE PASSENGER DOOR. THE HOOD HAS CLEARCOAT FLAKAGE, THERE IS A GOOD SIZE RUST BUBBLE ON THE HOOD, THE REAR SIDE DRIVER WHEEL BASE HAS RUST AROND IT AND THERE IS RUST AT THE BOTTOMS OF MY DOORS ON THE CORNER. THE REAR DRIVER SIDE BUMPER HAS BEGAN TO WARP, MY DASHBOARD HAS BEGAN TO WARP AND CURL UP. WHEN I TURN MY WHEEL I HEAR A LOUD CLICKING, MY CD PLAYER EJECTS MY CDS AT TIMES, THERE ARE TIMES WHEN MY RPM’S STICK AND THEN ACCELERATE ON THEIR OWN, WHEN I HIT A BUMP I HEAR A CHIRPING AND IT FEELS LIKE MY WHEELS ARE GOING TO FALL OFF, I HAVE HAD MY TIRES BALANCED ROTATED AND REPLACED, THERE ARE TIMES WHEN MY TURN SIGNALS DO NOT WORK AND I HAVE TO HIT MY EMERGENCY FLASHERS TO GET THEM TO WORK. I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE MY WINDOW REGULATOR AND THEN HAD TO HAVE THE CABLE ADJUSTED BECAUSE THE WINDOW HAS JUMPED OFF THE TRACK. MY BATTERY DIED ON ME. I DID NOT RECEIVE A WARRANTY ON THE VEHICLE BECAUSE IT WAS OVER 100,000 MILES AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE, WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT MY PAINT?

I have had more problems than I can remember. I bought the car used in 2001 with 30K miles on it. I bought the extended warranty to carry me over to 75K miles. I first had to replace the ignition. Then I had to get a new fuel filter and fuel pump. I have had to replace the brake pads approx 4-5 times in 2 years. The rotors twice. They both need changed again. The air conditioner had to be serviced because the switch was broke and it was blowing air at all vents including the floor and windshield. Then, the motor went out. At approx 65K miles. A used motor was paid for by the warranty company and installed after sitting at the dealership for over a month. This was in January. At that same time the exhaust had went out. I was told my warranty would not cover it because it was not the catalytic converter it was a piece that hooked onto it. Finally after they replaced the motor the put a new catalytic converter in. Then comes the CD player. It ejects at random and skips. It also gives error codes frequently. Then I started having problems with the lights. The ABS light and the Trac off light stay on along with the Check Engine Light. I was told the check engine light was on because the fuel injecters were clogged. Well, yesterday I took the car in for a fuel injecter cleaning and flush. I also had a tune up, oil change, tires rotated, air filter installed, new fuel filter, and new spark plugs. Still I am having a fuel problem of some sort. The car idles and misfires very badly. It shakes badly enough to make you nauseaus. It also misfires when you speed up and sometime sputters like it does not want to go. This was after everything was done. Then I am told it sounds like my catalytic converter is going out again after only 8 months. I have emailed GM but do not expect to hear much from them. This is ridiculous. I have spent so much money and now my warranty is out. They should be responsible for these problems. I would not say that but I have done extensive research online and found that every single complaint mentioned the brake system. 50% mention the fuel system and several mentioned the engine problems. Obviously it’s not the consumers faults.What should I do?Sarah Thompson

I had lock out problems right off the bat the dealer could not assist me. I have had problems off and on throughout my ownership with the fuel system. My dash also began to come unglued along with the shift area and passenger side. I have had to replace the motor in the window 3 times already because the plastic piece that jolds mirror in place breaks and you cannot buy the plastic piece you have to buy the whole motor. My drivers side mirror motor broke I have had to replace it and it has fell out because the glue did not hold it, I had to replace the mirror. The extended warranty I purchased did not cover any of this “stuff” I called the company and get dear jane letters that they are not responsible and blah blah. I asked them to cancel my extended warranty they said they couldn’t now the car is out of the mileage portion of the warranty and I still have to pay for something I cannot use and more than that hardly used?? Then you have to take it to a dealer and get charged an arm and a leg only to have to wait for them set up an appointment or better yet get stranded in an unfamliar city and miss work use all your min in air time from your cell phone trying to expalin to your boss you have the old famliar “car trouble” I drove all the way across town only to get to the dealer after telling them I was on my way to find them closed post poning me another day from my job… I have to use vacation pay to make up my salary fro them making a mistake in diagnosis. I was over 700 miles from home in a new town and on top of that a single mom.

I filed the earlier complaint below as Lynda Adams before I got married. My car is falling apart more and more everyday! The week before my wedding within days of each other both windows fell down that was $330 for drivers side. I can\’t afford the other one it is duct taped. Transmission needs flushed that is $70. Both wheel bearings went out that was $250. Just in time for the COLD WEATHER my heater only works on 4.June 9 Complaint: RIGHT NOW— This morning I got in my car to find that my dash has became unglued and is buckeling. In two places. Funny thing is.. it wasn\’t like that yesterday. I have been online and I actually found a website about this. It says GM refuses to fix the car. Also I have had to put 2 sets of brakes on car and fix the thermostat.

I contacted Oldsmobile in 2005 regarding my turn signals which worked intermittently. I was told at that time that their was a recall on 2000 Aleros for a faulty hazard swith that caused this exact problem but that my 2000 Alero VIN# was not included in this. If a problem is recognized as being so wide-spread as to make a recall necessary shouldn’t that include all vehicles made with those same parts. Regardless of where my car was assembled, it has the same parts as every other 2000 Olds Alero. I was told that my particular VIN number was not included. This is ridiculous. It is not accident that my car, the same model, from the same year is experiencing the same problem – Why should it be fixed at my expense??!!

Horn Doesn’t work. Windows Child lock broke. Rear window switch broke. I replaced brakes in Jan of 2005 and now I they have to be replaced again considering every time I press on them it makes a clicking noise. I also can be going do the road and car just stops getting gas and will not acclerate you can press pedal to the floor and still NOTHING and then the car will cut off. After sitting about 20 minutes (each time)it will start back up go about 1/2 mile and do the same thing to me again It has took me HOURS to get home from only about 5 miles from home. I have had this happen to me on 3 different times and would really like to know what it is but do not have the money to find out.

From almost day one, this car had been a major headache. The “Low Tire Pressure” light would come on and all 4 tires would be at the correct pressure. We have had the rotors and brake pads repaired on four occasions. The first time was at 20,000 miles. Each time, the warranty covered it. The last time, Oldsmobile refused to pay for it implying that my driving style contributed to the faulty brakes. What gall they had?! After I told my service guy at the dealership, his boss, and a representative from Oldsmobile what they can do with that refusal, they “fixed” the rotors and brakes again. Honestly, I can say that I haven’t had any more brake problems since that time. On the other hand, I have a multitude of other problems with this junk car. We bought the thing new and I still call it a junk car. The driver’s and passanger side windows don’t go down sometimes. I assume the window motor is about to go out. On occasion, the signal lights don’t work. If I turn on the emergency flashers for a second and turn them off, the signal lights will work. We have had the gas gauge repaired because it read 1/4 tank and I ran out of gas. Now, the intake gasket is leaking and we are about to take it in and see how much that is going to cost us. This car is such a lemon. I am very disappointed with the workmanship of this car. Now I see why more and more Americans are buying foreign vehicles. I won’t go foreign, but I will never, ever again by a GM vehicle. I am definitely interested in a Class Action again GM. They know this car is a piece of junk. I have called them and emailed until I am blue in the face and I now know that I am not the only consumer having problems with this car. Isn’t it strange that all of our complaints have the same complaints with this car? GM better get it together.

For the last severals years my Interior Dash has been coming unglued and warped. Now it just looks a mess.

FIRE MARSHALL STATED DEFECTIVE PART @ THE FUEL PUMP/FUEL TANK SYSTEM WHICH CAUSED FIRE AND COMPLETELY TOTALLED THE CAR. FUEL TANK EXPLODED QUICKLY. LUCKILY MY BABY WAS NOT IN THE BACK SEAT AND NO ONE WAS INJURED. I LOST A LOT OF MY BELONGINGS THAT WERE IN THE VEHICLE AS I WAS IN THE PROCESS OF MOVING.

Engine: Intake manifold gasket leak. Leaking Antifreeze into engine. $846 estimate to repair. GM dealer will not cover repair.Brakes: 2nd set of brake rotors and pads replaced, this is first one out of warranty.

Engine failure: The car had been using excessive coolant since about 30,000 miles. I would often top it off. At 50,000 miles, I had my mechanic flush the coolant system…about 300 miles later, my coolant reservoir was dry. There were no indications of leaks. At 55,000 miles, I noticed a brown slime in my crankcase, a sign of water or coolan mix contamination. I took my car to the dealer for service…they confirmed my suspicion that lower intake gaskets failed and would need replacement. Also, my oil system would need to be flushed and my PCV replaced. After researching, I discover that this gasket problem afflicts thousand of GM 3.4 L V-6 engine owners…GM actually sent out a tech service bulletin in 3/2003 to alert techs that intake gasket failures are common, and due to faulty factory equipment. The TSB includes new part numbers for the redesigned parts, and new torque specs for installation. GM is not discussing recall, in spite of these widespread problems.I am the original owner of the vehicle, and I have kept excellent records or maintenence. GM offered no financial assistance for this costly repair that, I believe, is inevitable due to design flaws. On top of all of this, I am left to wonder about the long term damage done to my cams and engine block from having coolant churning through my oil system for the past year.I am most interested in seeing a recall, though this is not really a safety issue. GM should stand by their product and quality. Class-action suit may be the only way.

Dashboard is pealing back at a fast rate. I called the local autoshop and was told by the shop owner that this was a problem that he had been seeing with many Oldsmobile-Alero. I am very concerned about this problem with the dashboard, and I fear that it will affect the quality of the airbag. I would like to know if other consumers have filed a complaint and I would know what steps to take to get the dashboard replaced. This is the primary family car for my 2-small grandchildren, and I feel that this is a serious fault in the manufacturing of the oldsmobile alero. Dashboard is buckling; air conditioning only works on highest two settings; engine coolant leaks completely out; brake lights do not work

Dash pad peeling and buckling. The dash pad is again peeling and buckling and door panels are are also peeling away from the door frame. I had the windows tinted and use a screen shield when parked in the sun. I also take care to use a lubricant made for the interior of the car.The paint on the car is cracking and peeling and the warranty is a thing of the past. I use wax on the car at least once a month to try to prevent this type of thing, but it hasn’t helped at all. The paint is disappearing on the car.

Computer controls- all the warning lights come on and the engine has to be turned off to rest them. (it looks like water leaks in by the door and gets in the fuse panel) The cruise control light lights up but when you release the button it goes out and the cruise control will not engage. Paint-fading and chipping. Power windows all failed about twice per window under warranty. Now out of warranty the drivers window came off the clips and they broke. The dealer told me that the regulator needed to be replaced to (even though the arms where moving up and down inside the door. So I let them replace the regulator. When I picked up the car the window worked a few times then it would work intermittently. I took the car back and they told me the switch and the motor where out. I told them to put the door back together and charge me for the estimate. When I got the car home the window still worked sometimes because the motor was not out. Now the back window has stopped working as well as the passenger window. There is some kind of manufacturer defect. I have Fords that never had a power window fail in ten years. Other-The vinyl on the air bag is bubbled up and the seal may be broken. I emailed customer service and got no reply. I feel this is also a manufacturer defect as I have had cars that are 11 years old and the dash is not warped etc. the vinyl is loose at the top of the door panels and on other parts of the dash one door panel had to be replaced while the car was under warranty. Other-The speed control will lite up when the button is pushed but goes out when I let go off the button and the speed control will not engage.

Bought car 10/01 with 31,000. Before the 3 yr/36,000 mile warranty expired, I had the gas tank sensor replaced for going off for no reason and the dash was replaced for bubbling. Ever since then I have never had level 1 or 2 on my fan level switch. It’s either completely off or full bore. There is no happy medium…freeze or roast. The vinyl on the doors below the windows are pulling down away from the black rubber part (both doors). I have had to replace the fuel pump going on 4 times. I am currently in the process of having to have it replaced for the 4th time…which has been 2 months since the 3rd one was replaced and 6 months after the 2nd one was replaced that the 3rd one was replaced. Pathetic! Recently I have had problems with the driver’s side window rolling up all the way. I will push it back up and it will just fall back down which causes rain to leak in and soak my floors. Finally, my turn signal switch has a mind of its own. Every so often it will just click. It started off just sticking and not working some of the times and then that quit and now it just clicks and clicks and it’s rather annoying, but I’m a broke college student so I have to deal with it. I hope that someday a class action lawsuit will be filed against GM for there sloppiness and negligence in building the car and I can recoup some of my money for all the problems that I have had.

At around 35,000 miles all the interior vinyl started coming unglued and rolling up. Just in time for the warranty to run out. That is the time when the other problems really started to happen. There was no use in taking the car to the dealer, the warranty was out. I could fix most problems, but the interior vinyl is the biggest problem.

2000 Olds Alero GL 3.4: Found coolant drops on garage floor. Took in to dealer and was told Intake Manifold Gasket leaking. This does not seem reasonable at 3 years old and only 47,088 miles. GM needs to be investigated and a recall should be made. Too many others I found online have same problem about same mileage.Cost to do work $843.85 (replaced intake and other gaskets drained cooling system and changed oil etc.) Told this was all necessary because of the leak from the Intake Manifold Gasket. On January 10, 2003, I spoke to a man at Olds Customer Service…his name Garritt Bates. After putting me on hold he called the dealer and came back to tell me this problem was "normal wear and tear". He gave me a file # and told me to hang on to my reciepts in case there ever was a recall.

This is the second gm vehicle that i have owed with the same structural defect. the first was a 1999 chevy malibu and now this olds alero. the lower sub frame where the rack and pinion steering gear is mounted rots away causing the rack and pinion to break away from the rusted out sub frame, leaving the vehicle unable to be steered. with the alero we were driving on the highway at 65 mph, when a clunk noise was heard. fortunately we were able to get off the highway before the rack and pinion completely broke free of the rusted frame leaving the vehicle without steering. there are several complaints for this same problem on this very same website for malibus, aleros and pontiac grand ams. it is hard to believe that the frame rotting away on these vehicles, causing the rack and pinion to break away from the frame, leaving the cars unable to be steered, has not caused accidents, injuries or deaths. here in the chicago area there are a great number of these vehicles still on the road. if this defective frame design does not warrant a recall, possibly some type of inspection notice can be sent to vehicle owners advising them to have their vehicle frames inspected (where the rack and pinion mounts to the frame - especially the passenger side) to check for cracks and excessive rust - corrosion, before this condition does cause accidents, injuries or someone's death. i checked with two of the larger gm dealers in the chicago area, bill jacobs and phillips chevy, both stated that the part needed to repair this problem, the lower sub frame is no longer available from gm. *js

While in motion, the engine stalled without any warning (e.g., no engine hesitation). after vehicle stopped, and transmission put into park, the engine restarted without problem and car operated fine. the same problem occurred again on 3/22/2014. *tr

The entire cluster system went out,$2200.00 replacement,the entire dash is coming down with a cost of $1000.00 dollars for replacement,valve cover gasket needs replaced with cost of $1200.00 cost to consumer,the brakes have been reworked for 300.00 dollars at a cost to consumer,actual mileage 43000- now problems started at 90,000 miles,the car constantly leaks in the auto when it rains,i feel as a consumer this vehicle should be recalled because i've had nothing but problems since the day of purchase,lost wages being stuck on the side of the road,pain and suffering because i only live on disability,and a part time job,and it took it all for repairs!!!!! *tr

I have a 2000 alero that is having a starting problem due to the stock security system. it has recently came up out of no where, and prevents me from getting to work, or anywhere else i need. i have replaced the passlock cylinder in the ignition, fuel pump and filter, but still when i turn the car to acc or on, the fuel pump does not come on, but the security light does. i was told the security system shuts off power to the fuel pump. this is a big problem because it happens multiple times a week, to the point i'm afraid to turn my car off anywhere i go. i don't mind replacing the parts, i just need to know how, and no one will inform me. *tr

I have a 2000 olds alero. gl 6 cyl 3.4, 4 door. i had to replace the engine about 3-4 years ago and this past spring the head gasket blew, so i had to invest in that. i am very adamate on taking care of my car and oil changes. also, the whole dash cover and passenger air bag cover is peeling away. i noticed this is several alero's i have seen in a parking lot. my main concern is the engine though. how many times am i going to have to invest thousands of dollars for the motor issues. is there anything that can be done about the motor issue? *tr

I received letter from gmc informing of a recall on the hazard flashing warning light (03v327000 or gmc # 03043. i was already experiencing issues at that time the dealer told me that it would have to be completely inoperable to be replaced. it is now inoperable and i have now been informed that my vin # falls outside of the recall. how is it determined which vin's are effected? is there any way to reinvestigate the effected vin's? i would like to resolve this issue before the car is involved in an accident and not after. thank you. *tr

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) i bought a 2000 oldsmobile alero about 3 years ago, i noticed at the beginning that the turn signals nor the hazard lights worked. we have done everything from changing bulbs,checking fuses and ground wires to no avail. i recently started having another problem where the oil has backed up into my oil reservoir, my car has not overheated and no oil leaks. that is how i came to find out that there had been a recall on the hazard switch on the alero. i contacted gm and gave them all the information that they needed. after being on hold for about 15 minutes, they then told me that it was not my make or model that had been recalled. the description on their website pin pointed my problem to a tee! and they are telling me that it is not their fault. my car has 91,000 miles. vin: [xxx]. i feel that gm should be held accountable for this defect in my vehicle, just because it was not my make or model as they are stating does not mean that it could not happen. i believe that it is a defect that they should be held accountable for. *tr

About a year ago i pushed my hazard button and it fell back into the dashboard. so now there is a hole there and i cannot use my flashers if needed. *tr

2000 oldsmobile alero engine dies. my car, up to date with all recalls, has numerous issues still with driving and dying. when you start the car, sometimes it has a high idle- 1500 to 2200 rpm. when you shift it into drive, it dies. sometimes you can be driving and the car just shuts off. i have had the car looked at by 3 different auto shops. 1 of them a gm dealership and 2 of them local auto shops. they have replace the fuel filter and played around with the idler. the problem still continues. a local mechanic did suggest that the issue might be that the engine would be getting flooded when it shuts off and then has way too much excess fuel when you try starting it. he said if it is true, his thoughts, it could eventually lead to an engine fire. this has been going on for over 8 months now. i will report the incident as today's date, as it has done it all day. when the car does shut off it is hard to control and i have had to use curbs as my stopping mechanism. *tr

Trac off light and anti-lock light on, car jerks into drive, and while changing gears. has to replace sensory, drive shafts, etc. brakes don't work, car jerks after 3000 rpms, dangerous, and can cause crash. *tr

When i first bought this car the backseats were not attached to the car. the dashboard is pealing up all the way and the paint is gone from my gear shift. both driver side and passenger windows have stopped working. the driver side i had to get fixed for inspection cost about $300. tires and brakes need replaced constantly. lights on the dash light up for no apparent reason. blinkers don't work most of the time and when they do it is this horrible loud clicking noise. cd player/radio stop working randomly. ac only works on 3rd setting. rear defrost does not work at all. fog lights will not turn on and bulbs are brand new. trunk will not open with button from inside car or keyless entry. my trunk randomly comes open for no reason and once would not latch to shut for a few days but then randomly latched shut. car leaks water in the front and back. recently my car won't start everytime it rains. i took it to an auto place and they ran it through the computer and couldn't find anything. now it's at a windsheild place because the mechanic says its leaking water into fuse box. glass place is saying that is not it either. i am at my wits end. it dries out and will start and as soon as it rains will not start. i don't want to pay another mechanic to have this fixed. i see where others have complained about fuses and waters leaks. i have had it towed twice in the last 2 weeks and had $600 worth of work done on my car. i cannot afford to buy a new car. i'm very aggitated that so many people have complained about this car and nothing has been done about it. i even complained to the bbb about the dealership i bought it from to no avail. why is nothing being done? *tr

Car dies without any warning. car consistently misfires, hesitates. occurs quite often. especially dangerous on the highway and hills. purchased the car used in may. dealer had it for a while putting in a new serpentine belt and after the first stall, the catalytic converter. didn't even have it ten days, when it first stalled and had to be towed. brought it back to the dealer, changed spark plugs. had it about a week, died on a hill with my two children in the car, started to roll back into another car. muffler was worked on. died again on the highway at 55mph. called dealer, brought it back to his service person and he felt it, but no codes showed. dealer was done with helping. warranty on engine and transmission expired 08/01/09. brought car to another mechanic, changed crank sensor. car died two more times. wrote a letter to gm, brought car to their mechanic. asked gm to assist since there have been so many complaints concerning the same issue. to me this is a manufacturer defect, not a maintenance issue. too many people have had this same complaint, some at the purchase of the vehicle new, some like me, bought it used. gm needs to accept this responsibility, before someone is seriously injured or worse dead. as a single mom, my children are everything to me. their life should not be jeopardized because of a car's malfunction, nor should anyone else's. i can't get rid of this car in good conscience, knowing another person may buy this vehicle and could lose their life or someone else's. please review the complaints on line and previously made. this is a safety issue. the saddest part is gm could make this right and won't. please know that i would appreciate your investigation into this issue. thank you. *tr

When trying to start car, it want turn over such as start at all. could be from bad spark plugs or bad connection somewhere. this does this very so often sometime after the car has been driven some distance. this situation has not been fixed yet, but has put a new starter and battery on there. do not have the money to keep putting into it if it does not fix the problem the first time. *tr

When i was about to be side swiped by another vehicle from the adjacent line, i heavily leaned on the horn and it stuck and continued blowing. i finally stopped it from blowing by hitting it a couple of times. thinking i had fix the problem, while sitting in the house it started blowing again. after doing this a couple more times i realize i had a problem. i had to remove the fuse to get it to stop. *tr

The front passenger seat of my 2000 alero has stopped latching in place and freely moves on the rails on the floor board. this happen right after i bought the car and it was replaced, and now the replacement is doing the same thing. i can not drive with a passenger in the front because it is not safe. *tr

The intake manifold gasket is failing, introducing coolant to engine oil. this problem is a result of a poor design. general motors has been aware of the problem for years. however, gm currently does not have a recall on these vehicles. while the part itself isn't costly, the labor to repair it is very intensive, and has been quoted around $800. recalls should be mandated in all cases of incompetence, not solely when it affects public safety! *tr

Anti-theft system keeps car from starting at times. if you try to start the car and it doesn't start the first try the ats locks the motor and you have to wait up to 30 minutes to try to restart it. *tr

I went to gus paulos chevrolet, salt lake city, ut, to schedule appointment to have blinker problem, which is a recall, fixed on my 2000 oldsmobile alero. however, service writer advised me that gm would not fix problem. i see on nhtsa website that the problem with my car should be fixed by manufacturer. service writer further advised me that your website and the car and driver website on internet could not be trusted with stating the truth. i just want my car fixed. *tr

2000 olds alero stalls after car warms up @ 15 min after driving. stalled on highway many times (road hazard) but started after it cooled down a little. now once it warms up stalls and won't stay running. replaced the ignition control module and has not corrected the problem. had to have it towed 2x. *tr

On two occasions, i had difficulty starting the car when i turned on the ignition but after about 15 minutes i would start it up again and it ran fine. while this happened, the security light would light up and continue to do so randomly. i took my car to the dealer and they cleared the security code once but the light turned on again after about a month which means the anti theft system is activated and preventing the car from starting. the engine also randomly stalls while driving at slow speeds, exiting the freeway ramp, and when the vehicle is coming to a stop at a traffic light . this incidence has occurred too many times to count, sometimes more than once within minutes of each other. before it occurs, the acceleration from the gas peddle is a little rough and the engine shakes and vibrates when stopped. i have to shift the gear to neutral and turn the key to restart the engine to run again right in the middle of the road! luckily i haven't had any accidents only because i know how to control it. but its really dangerous and getting annoying since i never know when its going to stall again. i took it to the dealer on 5 occasions and they could not find the source of the problem after having tried to clean the fuel injector which did not help. their scanning system could not pick up any error codes. i don't know what else to do. *tr

1. not sure what events have caused the engine failure. 2. my car shuts off while i'm driving. the steering wheel locks and i have to pull over to the shoulder, put the car in park and try to start the engine again. it has happened numerous times while driving on side roads under 40mph, but recently happened while i was driving on the highway at 60mph. this issue happens at least twice a week, sometimes repeatedly in the same day. this is a very dangerous problem because there is no warning signs that it is going to happen. i was very luck to be in the slow lane so i could pull over to the shoulder without having to weave through traffic without being able to control the car. 3. we have brought the car into two different repair shops and neither of them were able to pinpoint the problem. they gave us several "maybe" solutions, but were stumped as to what the true problem was. possible solutions included fuel pump/line, ignition switch, etc., but without a sure fix we were unwilling to spend that kind of money for a "maybe" solution. *tr

We have owned this car for less than 5 years and the rack and pinion steering has failed twice. this time my wife experienced complete steering failure and the car had to be towed. this is a very hazardous problem. i have had cars which were 25-30 years old which do not have steering failure in this manner. *tr

I have researched this problem and there seems to be too many people whose windows jam than fall down into the door. i have personally paid over $400 two times to have this fixed. also another incident with this car are the blinker which sometimes work and sometimes don't. just this week another problem with the air conditioning. the blower is not working therefore no defrost in this cold weather. *tr

While driving 65mph in the fast lane on the highway my car died. i had to cross over the highway to make it to break down lane very scary and very dangerous three mechanics later no one can solve problem . it happened 4 times on the highway and now it happens on the main streets. *tr

My 2000 oldsmobile alero has had serious problems with it since purchasing it in june of 2002. to date, i have had to replace my waterpump, intake manifold gasket, tires, brakes and rotors consistently (three or more times ayear) . the most recent problem is my gas gauge will indicate that i have 1/4 tank and to my surprise the car will not start unless more fuel is added. the engine also sounds rough, i have both service engine lights on, along with my low tire pressure, anti lock brake light on and i have new tires, replaced a gas cap, and the lights went off, but then come back on. i am also positive that my car will not pass inspection. the cosmetic defects are that of the dash board starting to peel and come loose. i have read up on that gm responded to a problem with all 2000 oldsmobile aleros about the gas problem and i contacted the dealer dorschel and spoke with service manager lou, gm agreed to add a different filter so that the gas was draining back into the tank, it was also mentioned in the article that dealers could be fined thousands of dollars daily if not complied with, but because it was not an actual recall, the dealer denied my request to fix. after reading the multiple complaints about these vehicles, i am shocked that they have not been recalled, the should be as they are not safe cars in my opinion. i am challenging you to take a ride in my car with your family and see if you feel safe, because not only am i out 13,000 that i paid for the car, but also if i have to estimate probably another 6,000 in repairs. that is ridiculous. i expect a written response from your office within 30 days of what you intend to do to investigate these problems. not only read my letter, but you should google in 2000 oldsmobile aleros and see the disgust of performance people are complaining of. *tr

I purchased a 2000 oldsmobile alero in 2003, since that time i have had to replace the power window regulators on the windows 5 times, the rear passenger side window twice. i have also had to replace the drivers side window master switch within the first 45 days of purchase to be able to open the front driver and front passenger windows. the power window regulator failure causes the windows to fall into the door panel leaving me no alternative but to replace the regulator immediately when this happens, for safety reasons as well as protection from the elements. i have also had to replace the molding on the front windshield. on all occasions i took the car to the dealership to repair the parts, receipts are available however i do not have the old parts. the last time i had the window regulator replaced i expressed concern at this consistent failure, i was told by the service person "since gmc changed to the cable windows there had been some problems but not enough for a recall". *tr

Turn signals started failing a few years after we bought the car. we changed them a few years ago and later got a recall notice about them failing. they were fine at the time that we got the recall notice about 2 years ago and just recently they started failing again. they go off and i never know when they are going to not work. sometimes they go really fast and sometimes they slow down. other times they just do not go on at all. i never know when that is going to happen. *jb

Vehicle cruise control nor rear defrost works. the front dashboard cover is shrinking and peeling back off of dash and is almost completely off of airbag area and this is seen in almost every alero but not other gm models

I have a 2000 oldsmob ile alero which was involved in an accident a little over 2 years ago. it was primarily a front end crash into another vehicle turning in front of me at about 35 mph. there was no airbag deployment,which led me to believe there may be a sensor or inflater problem. both airbags on the other car deployed. i wonder if this happened on similar vehicles? the vehicle was repaired at a body shop, but nothing was done to determine if the restraint system was flawed.*ak

I own a 2000 oldsmobile alero, have had no problems so far except the dashboard vinyl peeling up, and the particle on the vinyl backing flake off and recirculate through the car in the a/c. this is a problem with a lot of these cars that i did not notice until now. gm should fix this problem since they used glue that was not strong enough to hold the vinyl down! *nm

The security light on my dash will come one about 3 to 5 times per month. this results in my car not starting. the first time i was alone and had to phone for someone to help me. when they arrived the car started. after this, i realized the car would start after about ten minutes. i work with another alero owner and she had the same problem and had to pay a very large amount of money to fix the problem. she also said that every alero owner she knows has had the same problem. i have not visited a dealership due to the cost, and i feel a recall should be made. *nm

I have an 2000 oldsmobile alero which is a piece of crap since i first brought it home. i have had to change the brakes about 7 times!!! i have also had to fix all of the problems that were stated in the recalls. i fixed the recall problems before there even was any recalls because gm would not help me. then later i would receive the recalls. now my transmission is shot!! the ets system is not allowing the transmission to shift properly. we found a bolt laying in the transmission pan when we first serviced it. in the beginning we thought we only needed a transmission fluid and filter change but come to find out that bolt that was in our transmission pan filtered though the transmission allowing something to become loose in the transmission making it shift very hard. we had 2 mechanics look at it and both agreed that we needed to rebuild the transmission. i have only had the car for about 6 years but even in the beginning of owning this vehicle things started to go wrong. now oldsmobile is out of business and gm/oldsmobile wont do anything to help me which is typical of gm. i have been on the phone with gm about 5 times now and they just keep telling me the same thing over and over. basically i'm out of luck. now it will cost 2000.00 to rebuild the transmission and i do not have that. i will never purchase a gm vehicle ever again. i think that a foreign car like honda or nissan would be more reliable and wont be a piece of junk that isn't even worth 100.00. please help me i need a vehicle for work. *nm

Vinyl dashboard covering began to peel up at front edge, presumably becoming unglued in the sun. after a year, there is a lot of rippling in the trim and the length of the peel is about 12 inches. i observed the same condition on another alero in a parking lot. *nm

I have a 2000 oldsmobile alero and the turning signal light and the hazardous light does not work it makes a buzzing sound when i try to make a turn. while i was home from work one day and i put on my turning signal lights on it kept making the buzzing sound. i have not tried to get this fix because the dealer that i purchased the car from told me that it would cost me over $300 to get it fix and i don't think that i should pay that much for something that is not my fault.. i would just like to if there was any type of recall for that type of problem. *jb

Both doors were leaking in rain and in the car wash. i took it to the dealership where it was still under warranty because i purchased a 100,00 mile bumper to bumper warranty. they could not find the leaks. it continued to do it and still couldn't find the leaks. now it is leaking so bad that both back floor boards have standing water in them after a hard rain. they are also now water damaged. *nm

Brakes pulsate very bad. i had front rotors replaced approx. 6,000 miles ago as well as pads and pulsation is back. mechanic states this is a known issue with aleros...*

I bought my olds, alero used in july of 2002 and nothing but problems, it stalled on me on the interstate just a few months after i bought it. the mechanic said he fixed it only to get it back and stall again and again. i spent so much money on it trying to find out what was wrong. the mechanic didn't know and did not refund me my money. my lights on the dash stay on, the check engine light and the trac and water and oil change light. my cigarette lighter does not work again and the button you push in to put the stick shift in reverse has fallen off. the dash upholstery is messed up. the radio never came in right. i bought a lemon. just the other day my car stalled again on the bridge and i was almost killed, my 13 year old daughter and my 13 year old niece were with me and they were crying scared , we were almost rear ended. i finally got it to start and made it to my house, my car was missing and making a popping noise. i started my car an hour later and it was fine. i need some help. what can i do? please email me back at [email protected] or call me on my cell#(225)802-0394. *jb

For the past 4 years my olds alero has refused to start due to a malfunction with the built in security system. this happens one a week and you have to wait for 15 minutes to try and start the car again. the dealer wanted a couple hundred dollars to fix it. i have checked forums and this is a common problem. why doesn't gm acknowledge the problem and fix it for us. i guess they want us to buy a dependable car from someone else. *jb

At approximately 40,000 miles after having had the oil changed, my coolant light came on. when i took it to be checked (even though the fluids were all checked as part of the oil change), it was low. this happened each time i had the oil changed in the winter. finally, in november i was told that it was a leak in the intake gasket. *jb

Ignition/anti-theft security system fails. car won't start. "security" light flashes red when i try to turn the key. must wait about 10 minutes for light to go off. also, security light comes on as i am driving and remains that way until i turn the car off. on one occasion, car stalled while driving with light on. this problem began last year. i took the car to a gm dealer and had the anti-theft and ignition system replaced. it cost more than $500.00. today, exactly one year after, the problem started again. same everything all over again. *jb

I have a 2000 olds alero and just had a complete brake job including replacement of front rotors because of "pulsation" feeling in brake pedal..i was informed by the mechanic that my rotors needed replacing and that alero's were notorious for fast-wearing rotors. i replaced them but now after only 4,000 miles the pulsation is back. now the mechanic/dealer is telling me that it is a known alero defect..i don't feel i should have to keep paying for brake problems that are obviously a dealer issue... *nm

I have had a number of problems with my alero, including the turn signal issue, water leaks in the interior of the vehicle, loss of coolant due to a problem with the manifold intake gasket, water/coolant leaking into the oil, excess oil burning and oil leaks. i am particularly concerned about the problem with the manifold intake gasket as i took my vehicle in with regards to loss of coolant while it was still under warranty and the service form states that evap system was performing to spec. i plan on complaining again, but probably to no avail. i am considering litigation. *jb

In october of 2004, i purchased a 2000 oldsmobile alero with 3,900 miles on it. the vehicle now has 39,000. in the past 3 months i have had to replace the blower motor resistor twice on this vehicle. there are numerous web sites with complaints in regards to this problem with the oldsmobile alero. on one of the sites a worker for a gm dealership stated that he has raised the issue with gm in regards to this particular problem, which is that water is leaking behind the strip at the bottom of the windshield because gm failed to use a sealant when installing this strip, and water is leaking down from the bottom of the windshield and causing the blower motor resistor to short out. i called gm and stated my case and they referred me to a dealership. i find this unacceptable. why should i have to replace a $30 part everytime my area experiences heavy rains. if your wondering where the safety issue is with this post, picture the person whose heater controls don't work but continues to drive with an iced or fogged up windshield. this will definately cause an accident!!! *nm

Power windows on 2000 alero are defective to me. two out of my four power windows either do not go down or only work on occasion. the back window behind the driver stopped working and the window would not stay up. when i would be driving down the road, it would just start to slide down. the front passenger window is not working at all right now. i can't get it to budge at all. *jb

The vinyl on my car is falling off the dashboard and the side panels of my vehicle. these are common problems with oldsmobile aleros, of which gm takes little responsibility. there should have been a recall on this due to all the numbers of complaints. it is impairing my visibility while driving. i contacted victoria at gm, case #1-358478228 - the best she could do for me was 30% off the repair price of $1,900, which would still equal $1,330 + tax. this is unacceptable - it's probably more than the car is worth at this point due to the defect in workmanship. i then contacted david at symdom chevrolet, but he was not able to get any more satisfaction from gm. i then contacted brian at burtness chevrolet. he spoke to his rep, but i still have had no response from his rep. i don't feel this is an expense i should have to pay for even though it's out of warranty. it's an obvious defect on that particular color and type of vinyl/leather. the other colors of the vinyl/leather are fine. there's hundreds of complaints on the internet - no one that knows would ever by an alero! the least they could do is take responsibility for it. if this isn't resolved, i don't think our family will continue to buy gm cars - we have 4 in the family right now, and have always bought gm. no wonder gm is having so many problems - there's no customer service. *nm

Front tire area was making lots of noise. took it to dealer for service to check it out - thought it might be power steering problem. they told me it was the brakes. i did not believe this was the problem. took the car to a transmission shop to check that. he heard the noise and thought it might be the wheel bearings. we took it to another mechanic and he found that it was the wheel bearings and said that it should not have needed to be replaced - that they usually last over 100,000 miles (i only had around 60,000 miles on the car). the other problem is that the heater/air conditioning fan switch does not work on the first two speeds - only on the middle and higher speeds. i work with a man who has the same problem on the same make/model/year as my car. *nm

On 10/07 i was involved in a head on collision while operating a 2000 olds alero which i purchased new. the air bags never deployed. the vehicle is a total loss and everyone that saw the car agrees the air bags should have deployed. do you know of any other problems and where i might turn for answers and what recourse i may have. *jb

Leaking intake manifold gasket. coolant and oil mixing together and loosing both. have to keep refilling oil and water tank. had this problem fixed at a cost of over $810. it should have been a recall issue back in march 2003 when oldsmobile was aware of it.*jb

After experiencing loss of coolant in my 2000 oldsmobile alero, i was informed that i needed a new intake manifold gasket (it was leaking) which would cost almost $700 to fix. although my vehicle is no longer under warranty, i feel that a leaking intake manifold is a premature repair for a vehicle only 5 years old and only 51000 mi. i have done some searching and know that i am not the only gm owner with this problem. this problem is obviously a manufacturer defect not to mention a potentially dangerous one. any longer and i would have had a ruined engine that could have caught fire or stalled on the highway. gm needs to take responsibility for this problem. *jb

2000 olds alero, the problem is that the car will surge forward without your foot on the gas pedal. have taken the car into the service dept. for this and they claim that they can not find the problem. it did this daily when pulling into the garage. it even does it on the road so we keep a foot on the brake. it does not go fast but it does pick up speed on its own. have you had others complain about this with the 3.4 six cylinder engine with auto. it does not matter if air cond. is on or off. thank you for any information you can provide. this happens once or twice a week for unknown reason.

My 2000 oldsmobile alero has problems starting due to a defect in the passlock system. the security light will illuminate while driving and i have had 5 instances where the vehicle will not start at all. i read the owners manual and followed all the instructions provided. there is no reason for such a flaw, i have taken excellent care of my vehicle.

On the dash of my vehicle the air bag is bubbling up to where it looks like deploit. what will happen when i am just driving along and all of a sudden the air bag on the passager side comes out

2000 oldsmobile alero. diagnosed with a leaking lower intake manifold gasket at 55,000 miles (~ $800 repair). contacted oldsmobile for cost assistance because this is such a common problem. they told me that this was a case of negligence on my part. considering discussing with a lawyer due to the high volume of similar problems on this engine type.

Car loses all power with little or no warning. has done this 5 or 6 times while driving on the interstate. i have taken the car into 3 different repair shops, 1 being the dealership they could not find a problem or recreate it while driving. *ak

The gm recall for a defective hazard/turn-signal switch on its malibu, alero, & gramam lines is too narrow!. this concerns [nhtsa recall no. 03v327/gm and recall no. 03043]. *ak a large number of cars manufactured slightly before the range contained in the recall also have the exact same problem. a quick search of any message board concerning these gm cars will back up the claims in this complaint. even worse, local dealers refuse to honor the problem. even worse, for cars included in the recall, some dealers charge for labor, despite the terms of the recall.. in short, gm is knowingly and purposely not extending the recall to all vehicles actually affected. the consequences of this defective part can be quite fatal -- inoperative turn signals can lead to accidents, death, and destruction. i have recently been in many "near-miss" incidents due to this faulty part. (note, while the deaths and # injured are slightly exaggerated -- the number of failures is not!). due to the intermittent nature of this problem, i was unable to get it repaired during the warranty period. now that the warranty has expired, it is less intermittent, and more often in a failed state.

Engine blew. all the warnings lights are on across the dashboard. we bought this car used for our son and after having it for about a 18 months the engine blew. the dealer that fixed it said he should have paid attention to the warning light. my son changed the oil on time always and the lights never went out. tried to get the lights out to no avail. paid 2800.00 to have used engine put in by the dealer and the dash lights are still on. some sort of electrical problem because heat/defroster only work on high even after replaced engine installed. this has been a nightmare for a young man with his first car.*ak

Today, 13 apr 05, while driving my wife's car to and from work, her 2000 alero shut down at high speeds 65 to 70 mph. i was able to pull it off the side of the road each time, but power steering and brakes were hard to use. one of these times almost caused an accident. after pulling to the side of the road, i was able to turn off the ignition and restart the vehicle. there seems to be a major electrical problem. i have taken the vehicle in for the intermittent signals about 3 months ago and these are not working now either, i will be taking the vehicle back in to fix.*ak

My alero's (2000 3.4 v6 60,000 miles) coolant light came on. i checked the coolant and added what was needed. a couple of days later i noticed a pool of coolant on my driveway. it turned out to be the lower intake manifold gasket - aparently a common porblem and design flaw by gm in a number of their vehicles. i have not fixed the problem as of yet because of the cost involved and i am not currently driving the vehicle until i can get it fixed. i am unaware of any other problems as a result of the gasket at this point - will have to wait until it get fixed.

While driving into a gas station in my 2000 oldsmobile alera at about 2 to 6 miles an hour my air bags deployed. i hit nothing nor did i fall into a hole in the road. since there was no reason for the bags to deploy i wrote oldsmobile chairman of the board g robert wagoner, jr requesting assistance. his staff have stone walled my efforts to get assistance. i was sent to sullivan oldsmobile for inspection. the inspection was at best useless. they did not put the vehicle on a lift to check the undercarriage yet they tell me the bags deployed because of this. they said they took digital pictures, but were unable to show them to me. i stopped on my way home at a local garage had them put it on a lift and check the sensors which were not damaged. oldsmobile was still not interested so i took the car to another oldsmobile dealer who also put it on a lift and told me they had no idea why the bags deployed. oldsmobile in detroit continues to go back to sullivan's inspection ignoring the two inspections that showed no reason. oldsmobile has denied me any compensation.*ak

While parking my vehicle, i stopped the car and for no reason the air bags deployed. attempted to go through gm and they advise the frame of my vehicle has been repaired. my vehicle has never been repaird as it was never in an accident.... gm refuses to pay for my vehicle.

On march 3, 2005 my 2000 oldsmobile alero gl v6/3.4l would not start. on march 4, 2005, all 3 distributor coils were replaced as well as all 6 spark plugs. the car worked fine until march 7, 2005 when while driving the car for about 10 minutes, the car shut down. it coasted to the side of the road and i could not get it to start again. in both instances the car seems to try to start but is unsuccessful. in my online research, this appears to be a very common problem with no known resolution for other owners of the alero. additionally, after the window fell into the driver side door, on october 19, 2004, i had the mechanism for the driver side window replaced. in december 2004, the same window failed to work at all. i have not had it fixed again. the water pump was replaced after a sudden coolant leak completely depleting the system in november 2003, and the same situation occured again requiring the water pump to be replaced again in february 2005, a little over a year later. one of the cigarette lighters stopped working in june 2004. the service engine light, tire pressure light, and coolant light come on intermittently with no apparent problem. the interior dome light is touch and go, meaning if i touch the case, it may or may not go on or off. the front brake system has been replaced more times than i can count on my one hand in the nearly 3 years that i have owned it. the signal lights would stop functioning and buzz hideously until i pressed the hazard button. water has collected in the front passenger floorboard and in the trunk from seal failure. the engine seems to burn oil quickly. *ak

Owner was driving through a gas station at approximately 2 mph and the air bags deployed. there was no accident or injuries. owner contacted the manufacturer and the dealer. *ak *nm

Heater fan quit. windshield stays fogged up in winter. likely to cause accident. and cruise control quit also

Driving a 2000 olds alero. the gear shift becomes inoperable, because the plastic button that is used to push in to operate the gear shift is completely broken on the inside. the peice has even fallen out of the gear shift making it very difficult to place the car in gear. have had to push thumb into head of gear shift to enable "pushing of interior release" to place the gear shift in position. never experienced any damage under my posession, and as far as i can tell the previous owner had not abused the gear shift either. can cause a "suprising"moment when you realize you can not engage the gear you are intending to use. recently i was backing up in the vehicle, when the "button "came off, and rolled under my seat. luckily i was in a parking lot that was not extremely busy at that time. i had to try to locate the button with my foot still engaged on the brake so the car would not continue to "back up". that's when i realized by sticking my thumb in the open area i could then engage my gear shift into drive. *ak

The vehicle was involved in a front impact accident at 25 mph. the driver's seat belt did not hold the driver and the air bags did not deploy upon impact. manufacturer will be contacted by consumer. *nm

We were involved in an accident in sep 2004. another vechile was knocked into our vechile and my wife's seat did not remain locked in position. he seat slammed forward and my wife received fractures to her leg, and foot. along with a tear in the mincus of her knee. i have requested that gm look into this isse with the seat, but i do not feel that they are really concerned about the issue.*ak

There are a number of problems i have had with my 2000 olds alero gls 4dr. the main concern is the interior dash and door paneling bubbling than eventually starting to come off. my sunroof will not open as well. *jb

I am a fire investigator looking at a 2000 olds alero 2 dr. the vehicle was bought new in september 2000. there have been @5 reports of the alarm system light coming on at different times. the car has reportedly been to the dealership on @ 5 occasions and the prolem persisted. the owner was told the problem could not be fixed because they did not know what the problem was. the computer was replaced 2 or 3 times, the wiring harness was reported to have been replaced??? the alarm system is factory. the added stereo has been ruled out by the dealer. i would like a service/recall bulletin and information on this problem.*ak

"low coolant" light continually "on" for nearly 2 years, despite repeated attempts to refill it. when took car into the shop for separate issue, was informed that the intake gasket was faulty, resulting in $700+ of repairs, and concerns over possible enging damange done by leaky coolant in engine. i understand this is a common issue faced by many gm owners, and urge gm to issue a proper recall for this part.*ak

My car has less than 60,000 miles and i have had constant problems, some repaired, others, the dealer and other repair shops "could not determine" the causes. automatic windows won't work two front windows (intermittent) turn signs do not work intermittent, sometimes stop working and danger to me in traffic, air pressure light stays on and tire shop said they could not fix. this has been going on intermittently since before the warranty expired. before that i had to have a series of other repairs done at the dealer and at a repair shop because i am not financially able to afford the labor charges at the dealer. also the people at the dealers are not easy to deal with. i have all of my repair bills for further information. i have had to have several parts replaced in the wheels, the battery before warranty, the motor in the wiper fluid container, brakes, some part in the wheel before e the warranty was up. this car is a piece of junk and i believe the current problem has something to do with the electrical system not being manufactured correctly. i am driving a very unsafe car and believe the dealer will try to take advantage of me financially to try to correct it, if it can be corrected. i believe this car to be a lemon. the problems started with this auto within the first year i bought it. i don't have the exact date.*ak

When using the turn signals there was no indication inside of vehicle that the signal lights were in use or not. also, there no lights were blinking. stopped vehicle on side of road and got out to check signal lights on driver and passenger sides, and nothing showed. took vehicle to dealership for repairs, and was in contact with manufacturer.*ak

1. i started to get loud popping noises when turning my steering wheel in either direction. . coolant leak getting progresssively worse and i am smelling ethylene glycol in the interior of the vehicle.*ak i have looked up both items and found them to be inherent problems with my 2000 alero. the first is related to the steering arm/gear problems and the second is to the plastic intake manifold gasket defect. i am facing nearly $1600.00 in repairs. i wish i would have researched these items before buying this car used even with 35,000 miles on it. it has just turned 60,000 miles.

At 80,000 miles my car's engine rod went bad. i do regular maintenance on my vehicle and expected the engine to last much longer. i have a 2000 olds alero with a 2.4l pfi dohc 16v engine. with this it requires a used engine to solve my problem. the cost for the engine and labor will exceed $2,000. *jb

My vin number is not covered for bulletin number 03043a issued march 2004 for gm turn signals/hazard warning flashers inoperative, but the car is doing exactly what is covered in the recall. the vin breakpoint should include yc369922. my car is a 2000 oldsmobile alero. *ak

Intermittently while driving at low speeds hazard lights failed to operate. vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the hazard warning switch needed to be replaced. *ak

My turn signals will periodically stop working. when they are not working, pressing the hazard warning light button on and off usually gets them working again. on several occasions i was not able to signal my intent to turn as i could not get the signals to work at all or i couldn't get them working in time. *jb

This documents an ongoing scenario regarding the cruise control switch, p/n spo 022608614. on 1/25/01 had the switch replaced [woodard chev, fairfield, ca] because the switch was inoperative . the same switch was inoperative after a vehicle service on 5/17/02 [pearson auto, sunnyvale, ca]. i have not replaced the switch for a 3rd time, because i feel this switch will fail after another engine service activity. i do not want to continue to pay for faulty designed parts, or pay for service inadequacies which lend to other component failures. this switch appears to be faulty in that the part has a short service life, or there is a flaw in the service process which ultimately renders the switch inoperative. would like this remedied. thank you! *jb

Complaint received via e-mail. ignition cylinder locked up and i had to replace it at $350.00 plus towing charges. yesterday, october 24, the same thing happened. another friend of mine who owns a 2000 alero has had 3 of these ignition cylinders replaced at the cost of $350.00 each. *ak

While driving 20 mph vehicle drove over a sandy road, lost control, and hit a tree. upon impact, dual air bags did not deploy. no injuries reported.*ak

My signal/hazards have failed on my 2000 oldsmobile alero. a recall notice has been issued but apparently not for my car. my nearest service department, weber gm (63141), refuses to do any recall work due to the vin not showing in their database. a call directly to gm seemed to resolve the issue, however the service department still will not comply and gm will not issue a recall notice for my automobile.*ak

I have a 2 door my passenger side window droped down inside the car, i had to have the whole window lift replaced because you don't have a repair kit. one month later the driver side window has droped down inside the door. the plastic lift has broke on pasanger side also.*ak

Intake manifold leaking on 2000 oldsmobile alero. oil system is contaminated, and engine is running poorly, and will be permanently damaged if not repaired soon. there is a tsb out to replace the defective design. i had the vehicle in to a gm service department for diagnosis , and then discussed issue with gm customer service. they will not pay for complete repair because it is out of warranty even though the gasket design is defective. *ak

I bought a 2000 oldsmobile alero in july of 2003. within 2 months of purchase my power steering started to leak fluid. since that date i have taken it to various shops to check the problem. two mechanics state that it's the rack and pinion that needs to be replaced, while two others changed out a hose and the power steering reservoir itself. after having these two "problems" were fixed i am still putting in power steering fluid on a daily basis. this is an extreme fire hazard and i am tired of putting out money when it it obvious that i am not the only person out there that is experience problems with the rack and pinion on their alero. *ak

The brake light kept coming on. after having the brakes serviced the brake fluid remained low. then ,the rotors and the brake line were replaced three times. vehicle started to make noise, and currently the wheel bearings were defective. *ak

Hazard warning switch causing intermittent blinker function. my 2000 alero doesn't fall within the recall range of vin numbers. nhtsa # 03v327000, gm recall # 03043. dealer wanted me to pay $125.00 to diagnose, or replace the switch for $136.00 { $28 for part and the rest is labor etc.} . my vin ends with yc362717. i purchased the part myself and spent about an hour replacing the defective switch. i think the recall should include more vehicles that exhibit the same symptoms. i would like reimbursement for my cost and labor. i have the old part. gm knew about my switch last year, but there was no recall yet.*ak

Approximately one year ago the fuel pump was replaced in my 2000 oldsmobile alero. this year i am replacing the fuel pump again. the cost of each replacement with labor is approximately $600.00 if you run an internet search for problems with the alero, you will find that two common problems exist for the alero. one is brake problems (a serious safety issue) and the other being fuel pump problems. how long will it be (or has already happened) before someone is killed by a situation where the fuel pump fails while driving causing loss of engine power then applying the brakes to slow the car only to find the brakes are not working correctly, resulting in a potentially dangerous situation? gm should step up and accept responsibility for these defects.*ak

All four of my window regulators have failed within a period of 2 months, i have replaced 3 of the four, the left rear door still has not been replaced do to the cost of parts for this car, in adition, i have had to replace the front calipers, brake pads and rotors on this vehicle 2 times within a period of 1 year, just before the last time i replaced them, my rear calipers went out, they will engage, but will stay locked, only releasing after i drive for about 20 feet or so, i have also experienced problems with the security system activating itself and not allowing me to start the car for at least 10 minutes ( the time it takes the system to recycle itself). in adddition, my door pannels coverings are all coming separated accross the top of of them, again do to the cost, i have failed to replace them. unfortunatly this happened before i knew that so many people where having problems with the oldsmobile aleros, so i did not retain the old parts. *ak

I just recently started to have problems with the signal lights and hazard lights on my 2000 alero. they became intermittent. this has happened only few times.the problem has been sporadic in nature. however, i just learned that there was a recall concerning this problem but i've never received any notices from gm. and now i am concerned about my safety. when i contacted both the gm dealer and oldsmobile hotline, i was told that my vehicle (it's vin#) was not covered under this recall and the repair to my vehicle will not be made for free. please help, there obviously are problems with this vehicle. also, i had to replace rotors and pads 3 times already. first time 3 months after i purchased my brand new alero. since gm considers this as tear and wear they are not covering the repairs. my use of brakes is very light since i live close to highway and my work is very close to the highway. this got to be due to faulty design. there are a lot of people on the web experiencing the same problems with the alero's rotors. replacement is quite expansive and too frequent. sincerely, anita polakowski. *ak

Hazard warning switch is bad. my 2000 alero was built prior to february, the 2000 recall, and the acknowledgment and correction of the blatent safety issue has been ignored. it hasn't been handled satisfactory. after a month long run around of phone calls and promises, a certified letter with endorsment of documentation was mailed to oldsmobile on the matter. i was given a claim number a month ago by oldsmobile of 1-253388704. *ak melissa keffaber (purchased as melissa johnson)

I noticed my car would honk anywhere from 2-4 xs when i used my remote to lock it. one day, after using my remote, the car honked 3xs, when i came back later to start it, the car would not start, my battery had been drained. while contemplating what ot do, the lights flickered on and off erratically (over 20 minute period, when the keys were not in the ignition. further, all the gauges were moving erratically at the same time, there were several people who thought this is what was causing my battery to drain. i took the car 2 places to have it looked at, they agreed it was an electrical malfunction. i have noticed that the lights will come on for no reason, and stay on for various periods of time.*ak

2000 alero gls with the 3.4 l v-6 had to have the intake manifold gasket replaced due to failure and coolant leaking. the car had 38,000 miles on it at the time of the failure. this is the third gm vehicle i have seen that had this problem. a 2000 malibu with the 3.4 l and a 2000 bonneville with the 3.8l. all of these cars had the new dexcool coolant in them. *ak

Faulty adhesive used on the dash; causes buckling and peeling of dash pad. it is starting on the driver's side and spreading to the passenger side of the dash. this has not been corrected, as no dealer or repair shop will touch it. all say to go to gm with issue. gm will not fix it either.*ak

Rear-iew mirror came off window and was hanging by elecrical wire. safety hazard to driver or passenger. took to dealership to be repaired.*ak

Accelerator sticks - on 5 occasions. took to a gm dealership service center - they could not figure it out. took it to an independant service center - they could not figure it out.*ak

While driving at any speed vehicle stalled without warning. this resulted in loss of power steering and brakes. the consumer pulled off the road, and let the vehicle sit for approximately 15 minutes before restarting. the vehicle restarted, but stalled again within a mile. the mechanic performed a diagnostic test, which read fuel pump failure as the cause of the stalling. the current investigation on this issue was initiated, pe02066. *ak the ocnsumers daughter was the driver. *sc

My problem is with the power steering. my power steering is leaking enough fluid that i have to add fluid on a daily basis. i have taken my 2000 alero into the shop and found that it is the rack and pinion. this problem started only one month after purchasing this car used. i would never recommend a person to purchase this type of car as this seems to be a problem for everyone not just me. *jb

I purchased a 2000 alero that currently has approximately 52.000 miles on it. almost overnight, almost a month ago from today, the dashboard vinyl buckled, waved, and started pulling away from the dashboard. at this same time, the turn signals began to intermittently stop working completely. i have found numerous web sites where other alero owners have had the same issues. i realize that the dashboard is cosmetic and not a safety issue. however, the turn signals are a problem. gm will not recall the alero even though they have a history of serious defects that have nothing to do with owner neglect. gm should be forced to recall this sad excuse for a car. i'm complaining to you specifically because i feel as though no one else will listen to the hoards of alero owners with the same problems.*ak

Unusual wearing & pulsation of front brakes on car; replaced 3 times in 41,000 miles. 1) replaced rotors & pads at 7000 mi. at olds dealer-no charge. 2) 28,000 mi. same problem; work done by estes chevy indianapolis. gm service ctr. paid 1/2. 3) at 41,000 miles, same problem. took to car-x for opinion; est. of $283.00 to fix the pads & rotors; calipers ok. took car to estes. they said a bad caliper caused brakes & rotors to wear & all needed to be replaced. they suggested owner "raced the car" - untrue. estes gave estimate of $1000 & said to call gm svc. ctr. gm customer svc rep, maura said gm would pay 1/2 the cost. i told her that was not ok; they have brake problems with aleros & have defective vehicles causing a product liability & safety concern. maura refused to give us the old parts on the car if we had estes do repair work, saying gm wanted them. she said estes' estimate was $863, different than my quote. i asked maura to send e-mail or fax with gm offer & she told me she did not have access to a fax or email. she asked if i would give maintanence documentation. i told maura this had nothing to do with brakes, and i wanted to talk to her supervisor. she refused, saying she does not have a supervisor. i told her to call estes' service mgr; we did not want estes to fix it. i had researched brake problems on aleros on web; there are sites devoted to this. we picked up the car from estes, took it to car-x to fix, & had them check the calipers. cost was $284.00 for rotors and pads; there was nothing wrong w/caliper; they will check the pads every 6 mos . they gave us our old parts to keep. they stated gm rotors were thin metal; brake pads were grinding into them. the value of the car is less than loan, because of poor quality of the car, so we are out thousands of dollars. estes lied about the problem, overcharged, and gm refused to give us the parts off our own car. gm & estes colluded in evaluating the car. *ak

Power window for driver would not go up in 9/03 during a rain storm. after the rain stopped, i took apart door and pushed window up. window since would not go down. then during 6/04, the front passenger, and left rear-passenger power windows would not go down either. left passenger window will lower several inches at random times while parked. no one touches the power window switches in the car since i don't want a window to go down and not be able to get it back up.*ak

The windshield wipers, when set on intermittent cycle, do not work properly. grinding noise starts, and window movement is interrupted of both sides of the driver and passenger. *ak

Nhtsa campaign #03v327000 is a recall that was enacted for cars of the exact year, make, model of my car. however, oldsmobile says that my car is not included in the recal due to whatever reason. my car has problems with the hazard flashers identical to those listed in this campaign. it is evident that my automobile should be included in this recall, but was overlooked in whatever study was perfomed. this recall needs to be expanded to include autos like mine that are affected and are safety risks, but overlooked in this campaign. feel free to call me.*ak

Turn signals did not work when making a turn. consumer was not able to make other drivers aware that she was going to turn. dealer changed the turn signal switch. a second dealer told the consumer that this model vehicle was on recall for that problem. however, this vehicle was not included in the recall due to vin.

Reimbursement for repairs to vehicle for structural damage.*mr the consumer stated the left front coil spring broke and subsequently other parts on the vehicle needed to be repalced due to the coil spring failure. *jb

This car has had three sets of brakes put on it and now at 45780 miles is going to have to have another set. i know the previous owner well and know the history of this particular vehicle especially. the brakes are either of substandard design or used inferior quality materials in the manufacturing process. the rotors are junk. this is certainly not safe in a sudden emergency stopping situation.

Hazard flasher button came apart from whatever fastens it and now the hazard flashers are inoperable. turn signals work most of the time but sometimes do not flash or flash so quickly they are not visible.

The turn signals work "sometimes", i was told it is a problem with the hazard switch but that has been replaced 3 times and the problem still exist. i have had six (6) window regulators replaced on my vehicle. a vehicle that has this history with turn signals is a safety hazard and your department should get more involved. the incident date is just the latest time the window has gone out. *jb

Regarding 2000 oldsmobile alero - intermittent failure/ malfunction of anti-lock brakes and traction control while braking to a stop.upon starting the vehicle, the anti-lock brake system would appear to work fine. the traction control system, indicated by the "low trac" light may or may not be lit, indicating a problem. shortly after driving the vehicle and while braking to a stop, the traction control system seems to sense a slippery road and activates the anti-lock brakes, causing the brakes to disengage and then slowly re-engage, as if stopping on slippery pavement. however, this has been happening on dry, normal pavement at normal speed and stops. having the brakes disengage while braking to a stop increases the needed stopping distance and requires the driver to either turn to avoid a collision or use the emergency break to stop. note that the the red brake failure light is not on during this condition. after stopping, the amber "anti-lock", "trac off", and "service vehicle soon" lights are lit and the vehicle appears to deactivate the anti-lock and traction control system for the rest of the trip. the brakes then work fine, with these systems deactivated. *ak

When using the turn signals consumer noticed that the turn signals worked intermittently. also, the hazard lights worked intermittently. consumer contacted dealer about this issue.*ak

The steering wheel shakes while driving at 60-75 mph, on relatively smooth roads. the vibration can sometimes be felt through the floor on the driver's side, and the driver and passenger seats. the severity and location (steering wheel/seats/floor) of the shaking varies with different roads, but never goes away completely, even on newly resurfaced highways. on surface streets (50 mph and less), the shaking is not noticeable. this has most likely lead to a lot of the minor squeaks and rattles in the interior that make the car sound and feel older than it is. i replaced the original tires at about 40,000 miles, and recently had the new tires rotated and balanced, but the problem persists. i have not yet taken the car to the dealer to repair this, since i am still recovering from $1700 worth of repairs i had done to fix the head gasket leak and replace upper strut mounts. this could be a very nice car, if it wasn't for the number of large (and expensive) repairs needed so early in the car's life.

Turn signals work when they want to. hazards have same problem. i have been stopped for this problem. this started one month after purchasing a "certified pre-owned" oldsmobile

The 3.4l v6 engine regularly lost coolant, and the reservoir had to be refilled about once a month. also noticed thick white goo on the oil cap (but not on the oil dipstick), and heard a ticking sound after starting the engine, which went away after the engine warmed up. the dealer said the head gasket was leaking, and the repair cost $1,100. the engine had 53,000 miles at the time of the repair, which is well beyond the warranty, but this type of problem would have developed several thousand miles ago, before any symptoms were noticeable. it is very disappointing to have major engine work done with so few miles (also had to have serpentine belt replaced), especially when the alero's sales brochure brags about "long life fluids, including coolant, that will last up to 100,000 miles or more." when the dealer replaced the head gasket, they said that replacement part is the same as the original (gm had not made any design changes to the part), so this will most likely be a recurring problem for the life of the engine. overall, i'm happy with the car's design and performance, but it's upsetting to have such high cost repairs on a car i plan to drive for several more years.

The intake manifold gaskets had to be replaced. if left alone, the leak would have ruined the engine which would have cost 2000.00 or more.

I bought the car used in 2001 with 30k miles on it. i bought the extended warranty to carry me over to 75k miles. i first had to replace the ignition. then i had to get a new fuel filter and fuel pump. i have had to replace the brake pads approx 4-5 times in 2 years. the rotors twice. they both need changed again. the air conditioner had to be serviced because the switch was broke and it was blowing air at all vents including the floor and windshield. then, the motor went out. at approx 65k miles. a used motor was paid for by the warranty company and installed after sitting at the dealership for over a month. this was in january. at that same time the exhaust had went out. i was told my warranty would not cover it because it was not the catalytic converter it was a piece that hooked onto it. finally after they replaced the motor the put a new catalytic converter in. then comes the cd player. it ejects at random and skips. it also gives error codes frequently. then i started having problems with the lights. the abs light and the trac off light stay on along with the check engine light. i was told the check engine light was on because the fuel injectors were clogged. well, yesterday i took the car in for a fuel injector cleaning and flush. i also had a tune up, oil change, tires rotated, air filter installed, new fuel filter, and new spark plugs. still i am having a fuel problem of some sort. the car idles and misfires very badly. it shakes badly enough to make you nauseous. it also misfires when you speed up and sometime sputters like it does not want to go. this was after everything was done. then i am told it sounds like my catalytic converter is going out again after only 8 months. they should be responsible for these problems. i would not say that but i have done extensive research online and found that every single complaint mentioned the brake system but 50% of them mention the fuel system and several mentioned the engine problems.

Check engine soon light comes on; had prob fixed before mechanic said a wire was laying on manifold, repositioned and tightened but prob is occuring again; service vehicle light stays on along with trac off light; car engine presur is decreased and makes noises and when turning wheels left or right there is a sound like rubber running together; pads have to be changed every 6 months and rortors have been changed twice.*ak

Engine: intake manifold gasket leak. leaking antifreeze into engine. $846 estimate to repair. gm dealer will not cover repair. brakes: 2nd set of brake rotors and pads replaced, this is first one out of warranty.

I am on my third pair of brake pads and rotors. the last time this was corrected was in nov. 2002. the initial set that came on the car was supposedly "bad" and replaced nov. 2000. i got the car in aug. 2000. problem was reported to dealer oct. 2002 as well. never could identify problem. grinding light and noises under hood that were finally identified as the brakes taken in again in jan. 01. the "other" consists of a new alternator in nov. 2002 as well as new tires in july 2002. i had to purchase two while gm gave me 2. locks were messed up again april 02. faulty window regulator in sept. 01. i have documentation of all of the invoices/printouts from the dealer as well as my maintenance papers.

Lower intake manifold gasket failure causing leakage of coolant into the engine and onto pavement. this type of gasket failure is unacceptable at such low miles. august update: since filing the complaint, i had the intake manifold gasket replaced (along with the other gaskets, seals, and rings that are typically replaced in this procedure) by the olds dealer here in my area. this was done at mileage 51947 on 2/11/03 for my 2000 olds alero that was purchased new on 7/6/2000. as for cost, i was able to do some negotiating with the service manager. about one month earlier, i had taken the car in to get the drivers side window repaired. it had fallen out of track (for the second time), and i raised the issue that this was unacceptable, and that their competitor cars do not do this (non gm vehicles). having negotiated a low price on this window repair, the service manager remembered me for the intake manifold repair. i raised a number of issues and facts surrounding the intake manifold gasket and was able to get the entire repair done for $276.75, along with an oil change and serpentine belt replacement, included. i have not noticed and problems with coolant leakage since the repair was preformed. another concern that i have is, since my repair was done in february 2003, but the service bulletin is dated march 2003, were old parts used in my repair and will this happen again?

Fire marshall stated defective part @ the fuel pump/fuel tank system which caused fire and completely totalled the car. fuel tank exploded quickly. luckily my baby was not in the back seat and no one was injured. i lost a lot of my belongings that were in the vehicle as i was in the process of moving.

2000 olds alero gl 3.4: found coolant drops on garage floor. took in to dealer and was told intake manifold gasket leaking. this does not seem reasonable at 3 years old and only 47,088 miles. gm needs to be investigated and a recall should be made. too many others i found online have same problem about same mileage. cost to do work $843.85 (replaced intake and other gaskets drained cooling system and changed oil etc.) told this was all necessary because of the leak from the intake manifold gasket. on january 10, 2003, i spoke to a man at olds customer service...his name garritt bates. after putting me on hold he called the dealer and came back to tell me this problem was "normal wear and tear". he gave me a file # and told me to hang on to my reciepts in case there ever was a recall.

My 2000 alero has just over 50000 miles on it. i was just told that i had to have the intake gasket replaced. the car has been leaking coolant for months. oldsmobile needs to take responsibility for this problem since it seems to be happening to a lot of their vehicles. *jb

I have a 2000 oldsmobile alero. i just recently bought this car used with approximately 35,000 miles in october 2003. at around 40,000 miles in february of 2004, i discovered that i had an coolant leak. while the manual says with the "dexcool antifreeze" i should not have had to replace any coolant until 150,000 miles, i had refilled around three times within around 4,000 miles. i took it to a gm dealer who informed me that i needed a new intake manifold gasket, along with many other small parts associated with the i.m. gasket, that came to a total bill of around $600. my intake had to be completed taken apart and resealed because the dealer said that oldsmobile had used a "weak sealant". i have filed a complaint with oldsmobile, but was informed that it would not be a recall until more people complained to them. i have seen many consumer complaints on this subject, and if more people complain we may be able to get our money back. this was a defect on my car because of faulty eqiupment and parts used in the manufacturing, and i feel that no matter if i was the first to complain or the thousandth person to complain, an intake manifold gasket should not have malfunctioned and had to have been replaced on a car that only has 40,000 miles. oldsmobile really needs to take credit for their actions in replacing faulty equipment on the cars they have made, no matter if they are going out of business or not. *ak

This is the third brake job , got car with 30,000 miles had it two years - have replaced both wheel bearings--car now has 55,000 miles. have replaced drivers side window control switch and now its in for the door latch failure. ever driven 30 miles to get to a dealer with your door bungie corded shut if that is not a safety problem what is ?? that is the drivers door by the way. i have most definitely lost faith in gm. my next vehicle may very well be a hyundai accent, they have only one page of problems and they provide a warranty. *jb

I have a 2000 alero (64025 miles). my mechanic said that i need to replace the intake gasket, a cost of $600.00 to fix. he told me that he has replaced many of these mostly in aleros between the years of 2000-2003. this is not the only problem i am having with my car. the motor for the window on the driver's side has been broken for about 1 yr. the oldsmobile dealership gave me a quote of just under $400.00 to repair it. not to mention that i have had the rotors and brakes replace all the way around the car (about 1 yr ago) and about every 3-5 months i have to go in and have the rotors turned. it cost me close to $800.00 to have the brake and rotors replace and the turning of the rotors are under warranty...but i have to take time to do this and it is very inconvenient. not to mention the car is only 3 years old...oldsmobile should take care of all of these problems. this is costing their customers time and money!*ak

Regarding 2000 oldsmobile alero: experienced steering failure when making right turns. steering would completely lock when making right turns at slow speeds and when making slight steering adjustments to the right even at high speeds. car was not drivable. i have seen recalls on several other gm vehicles (different model years) for the same problem. i had to replace the rack and pinion unit, costing over $950. if this is a common problem in gm vehicles, then why is there not a recall? *la

I have a 2000 oldsmobile alero gls. on or about 1/3/04, the fill coolant light came on. i refilled the coolant level. since then i have put 2 and 1/2 containers of coolant in the car. the car was the losing coolant quickly but it was not leaking in the ground. i had it checked by two separate mechanics and was told that the coolant is running into my oil and my engine has blown a head gasket. there is no warranty on the car. i don't understand how a car of 4 years old can blow a head gasket. the car is still reasonable young. *jb

The consumer stated that the regulator on the driver's side power window has broken. it was replaced for $309.74. the consumer spoken with the dealer/mechanic and was told that they are replacing these things at the rate of 4-5 per month. he stated that his just snapped and the window fell down completely, because it operates on a pulley type system. *nm

General motors considers a warped brake rotor as normal wear and tear and would not be considered a warranty defect. warped rotors cause undue vibration and sudden loss of control of the vehicle, especially at freeway speeds. the rotor was repaired under warranty at 24,000 miles, by turning the rotor in april 2002. however, the problem has since recurred and general motors will not repair them under warranty since the mileage exceeds their 36,000 mile warranty period. mr. evan doel (1-866-952-4368) at the customer service department of general motors corporation also expressed the fact that a warped brake rotor on the alero is a "common problem" and that he has received several calls for this same problem. general motors corporation demonstrates corporate irresponsibility in knowing that repeated occurrences of a warped brake rotor on the oldsmobile alero is categorized and simply considered a "common problem." a problem in which the vehicle, its driver and its occupants are put into jeopardy that could result in injury and/or death. i have already written a letter directly to g. richard wagoner, jr., chairman and ceo of general motors corporation on december 1,2003 and carbon copied to .mr. paul white, general manager of crest auto group in plano, texas 75075, where the vehicle was purchased. *la

My intake manifold gasket began to fail earlier this year. starting in sept. 2003 i had to add dexcool every two weeks to my reservoir; beginning in oct. 2003 i had to add every 7 to 10 days. my car was not quite yet to 50000 miles. gm claims that my problem was not caused by dexcool and that i should have had my coolant system serviced at 30000 milles but i have three pieces of gm documents that say that the coolant system does not have to be serviced until 150000 miles. i was told by one gm service technician that the part i had to replace was a piece of junk. fortunately there were no crashes or fatalities. i had to add two months to my car note in order to have this problem fixed. the part cost $58 and the repair cost $540. i have read complaint after complaint on the internet that this part has caused many problems and that gm refuses to do anything about it.*ak

The gaskets on the alero engine are not compatible with the type of materials used on the engine causing them to leak very early in life. if coolant leaks into the engine it could cause damage and potential hazard while driving.*ak

Involved in a head on collision where another car turned in front of my vehicle at approx. 20 - 30 mph. airbags failed to deploy and i received deep lacerations on my forehead from my head going through the windshield. both front airbags deployed on other vehicle.*ak

Front rotors have been replaced twice and re-turned twice. all were highest quality napa rotors available with ceramic pads. burned through ceramic pads as well! clearly a design flaw as braking system is undersized for weight of car. *la

Two gears in the transmission broke loose and shot metal throughout the transmission creating a complete failure. new transmission was needed at a very large cost. car has less than 50,000 miles on it and we bought it about 3 1/2 months ago. *la

My problem is like many other complaints listed here. the brakes! i am continually have them serviced. every since i have gotten my car this has been a problem it is just getting worse as time goes on. i just got my 3rd set of brakes in under a year put on two days ago. the dealer says brake wear is normal, there is nothing wrong. nothing wrong, explain to me who has to replace brakes this often? i live in wisconsin, so its not like i have hard braking or lots of hills etc. my brakes pulsate, make funny noises and they wear down crooked. i have called oldsmobile only to be given a run around. there are so many complaints identical to mine, when is oldsmoble/ gm going to be held responsible for producing a faulty product????? *jb

I am in the navy and have had my car for around 8 months but just found this site now. my intake manifold gasket went on me at 40,000 plus miles. i have read tsb's and found many others have had this problem. i know oldsmobile is being phased out but i love my car due to it being my first car and i have been financially stricken due to incidents like this. my warranty had expired and it cost me 600 dollars to repair it. i was told by my family and a navy jag to file a complaint with the better business bureau and the dealership but i decided to take this route. please get back to me on this. i would appreciate it. *la

Car ran out of gas while gas gauge still showed over 1/4 tank left. after adding 1 gallon of gas, gas gauge jumped to almost full. after filling tank and driving 200 miles, gas gauge still shows over 1/2 tank left. *la

I have a 2000 oldsmobile alero. my rotors have been replaced 3 times while still under warranty and whereby the shim kit was placed. i am still experiencing the same brake problems. my turn signals and hazard lights have completely gone out. now every few weeks, without any warning, my car completely shuts down, leaving me on the road. i have had it towed to repair shops where they put it on the computer and it doesn't give any code. they cannot figure out what is caused it to stall. this has happened to me 3 times this year. the regulator had to be replaced on the passenger side door window. my car is currently at the shop, and i have recently read the voluminous complaints to the engine coolant system and will inform my mechanic to check to see if that was the cause of the stall. the car will just shut down on the interstate while at 70 mph. this is very dangerous. *la

On my 2000 alero the turn signals work sometimes, no other times. also blink erratically. the upper middle brake light is the only one that works. flashers stop working sometimes, then start again. i believe this is some type of short in the wiring system. i know of two other alero owners that are experiencing the same problems. *la

Premature intake manifold gasket failure on gm sohc v6 engines causing an external coolant leak. this is common knowledge to mechanics and parts stores. in my case at less than 50k miles, although most commonly occurs around 70k miles. *jb

I have a 2000 oldsmobile alero. the car has been a continuous problem since i drove it off the lot. the suspension has failed, the fuel injector and alternator have been replaced, the electrical system malfunctions all the time, and problems continue to develop on an almost monthly basis. i contacted oldsmobile and they could care less, referring me to the "dealer" who has been repairing this vehicle repeatedly. i see why oldsmobile is going out of business. they're products are inferior, and border on dangerous. i'm just hoping this car does not malfunction seriously while i'm on the highway. the incident date below is the approximate most recent repair date. the dates of various incidents are too numerous to list. *la

I have a 2000 alero and it fails to start every once in a while. the problem seems to be coming from the ignition fuse but even after changing the fuse it would still not start. i as well as my mechanic are baffled. the latest was last weekend but it has happened about 6 times. the weather has nothing to do with it as well as the amount of driving done or not done. it seems to be a random occurrence. *la

I bought the car 1 year used, and the brakes had just been replaced by the dealer. not even a few months later the brakes started to pulsate and the steering wheel would shake upon braking. i replaced the rotors and brake pads with the best on the market, thinking it would last a long time. a few months later the same problem happened again. they should do a recall on the brakes. also the drivers side window motor broke and was replaced. the hazard switch was replaced, the turn signals fixed due to an electrical problem, the gear shifter knob was replaced because it fell off for no reason. the antilock brakes/service vehicle soon lights come on at random times when there is no problem at all. the transmission is leaking as well. i see that many many people with this car have the same problems and oldsmobile should do a recall on all these things since they are not just random occurrences.

My 2000 oldsmoblie alero appears to have an electrical problem with its dashboard warning lights. there is already a recall on the "4-way" flashers, which i have already replaced at my cost. i just spent over $500 replacing several sensors because the warning lights kept coming on. it stands to reason that if one part of the electrical system in the dash area is faulty, then other parts may be as well. this problem has persisted for over a year. *la

My 2000 oldsmobile alero (50,000 miles) got a blown head gasket. the manufactures instructions stated to use dex cool anti-freeze only. our mechanic believes the anti-freeze rotted the gaskets which caused the problem. he had another newer alero with the same problem.*ak

The front brakes were worn out at 41,944 miles for the first time. the rotors were turned & the pads replaced. the brake repair lasted only 12,296 miles ( this was 296 miles out of warranty) when i was told the rotors were warped again & the pads needed to be replaced. of course this is "normal wear" that the extended warranty does not cover. i had to pay out of pocket twice for the entire repair. after finding the tsb reports, i feel the rotors should have been replaced. since reading the numerous complaints covering the past several years on the brakes of this vehicle, i fear the brakes may fail with out any type of warning. what will it take & how long will it be before the nhtsa forces gm to issue a recall on the brakes?! *jb

I have a 2000 oldsmobile alero with 55,000 miles on it that is leaking coolant. i have brought it to 2 different auto locations, one a dealer snd the other a mechanic whom i trust. both places agreed that the intake manifold gasket has worn out. i am now in the process of getting the gasket replaced which will cost me $600.00, not including the towing charges and diagnostic expenditures that i have gone through. the mechanic who is replacing this gasket said that this probobly about the 15th alero that he has had to do the same replacement work to and that he has read that this a common defect for this car. the first time that the car wa towed, because the engine coolant leaked all over the garage of a friend's house, it was taken to a pep boys shop and he also said that he had read in car magazines that this was a common problem for old's aleros from the year 2000-2003. i believe that gm should put out a recall on this problem as it is costing many people a lot of money and it is a road hazard, something which could cause a fire

When brakes are applied the entire vehicle shakes or pulsates. replaced pads. minimal change. found report advising common problem and rotors and hubs must also be replaced. *jb

I filed a complaint before odi number is 754110, and i wanted to add the latest to this complaint but couldn't seem to find it. however this vehicle is still having major problems now the passenger window fell like the drivers side did, the tires had had to be replaced again, after i took it in the a dealship for a recall notice, they repair whatever needed to be repair now the blinkers make a fast clicking sound and the light inside blinks really really fast while using signal. yesterday the car wouldn't stay started , the engine hestiated to start or didn't start at all. damn i'm so tired of this so i just stopped paying on this vehicle they can come get it as far as i'm concerned. i work hard to end up having someone sell me a lemon. this is terrible. do you have any ideas on what i can do?*ak

The leather cover dashboard starting bubbling up in mid spring of 2003. starting in may the dashboard starting peeling up. it has continually bubbled up towards the steering column and the passenger air bags. it is beyond warranty but we can't get any response from oldsmobile. *jb

I have run out of fuel twice despite the fuel gage showing 1/4 full. first time, at about 15,000 miles, the car was towed by roadside assistance to a service dealer. they claimed to have spent two hours of diagnostics and could not find anything wrong except that the car wouldn't start. they then put in some fuel and the car worked fine. they said they never checked the fuel gage. they charged me $200 as "diagnostic charges". they said that the charge was not covered by warranty as they had not found anything wrong. they implied that maybe i had just made a mistake by not noticing the fuel gage was empty (despite spending an hour on the phone with gm roadside waiting for the tow truck to arrive - we checked all the gauges). their mechanic had not bothered to look at the gage while starting to work on the car. gm refused to reimburse the $200. the second time the fuel gage was still above empty but the car went dead. when i put in 1.5 gallons, it still didn't start. when i put in an additional 1.5 gallons, the gage went up and the car started fine. i have not had this problem for the past 18 months - but i now fill up as soon as it reaches anywhere near the 1/4 mark. *nlm

I have an oldsmobile alero 2000. sometimes the turn signals and the hazard lights will fail to function. this occurs intermittently. it seems to first occur during rainy weather, but persists even afterwards. i had the same problem sometime in 2001 at 16,800 miles and the dealer had replaced the hazard/turn lights relay/unit or some such device near the dashboard and it had worked alright till about a few weeks ago when the same problem occurred. my car is now at 40,000 miles (past the full warranty) when i called oldsmobile customer service they told me they had no information about such a problem and refused to comment on whether it may be covered under warranty unless i had it checked by an oldsmobile dealer (my local dealer charges $100/hour for "diagnostic charges" whether or not they find any problem and i did not want to go to them with an intermittent complaint that is probably not under warranty). i now notice on your website that other people have had identical problems with the hazard switch in chevrolet's and oldsmobile's. *nlm

The brake rotors had to be replaced twice because the brakes wear very fast replaced brakes 4 times since i bought the car in august of 2001 even if there the lifetime warranty brakes. the drivers door window motor has to be replaced. driver window keeps coming off track causing the window to fall. the interior light fell out and had to be put back. the low tire air pressure light, and others keep coming on and staying on even if the work has been done. the back window has a wire type defrost in the window itself that has burned in once place only leaving a burned look on the back window. the cruise control went out a week after i had the vehicle which i bought the vehicle at 30, 000 miles. the passenger side view mirror shatter going the a roadway about 35 miles an hour, almost causing eye damage to a very young child if i hadn't roll the window up in time due to child being seated in the back seat in a child seat. the mirror shattered in very tiny pieces for no apparent reason. *nlm

Brake lights keep blowing out. and the lights on the digital odometer as well as the clock on the cd player go out briefly. i am also experiencing problem with the gas gage. it goes up to full and then drops to e and does this over and over quite rapidly. i have also been unhooking my battery everytime i get out of my car because if i don't, my head lights come on and won't shut off causing my battery to drain. *nlm

Breaks on our 2000 oldsmobile alero have been checked/fixed 3 times in 39000 miles. in aug 2002 new front rotors and pads were replaced at 31810 miles. in july 2003 at 39448 miles front inside pads were over 50 % worn and the rotors needed turning. back brakes also needed repare. this last instance only had 7638 miles on the 'new' rotors and pads.this is a known issue and one that the customer must swallow huge repair bills every 8,000-10,000 miles, well out of the normal range.*ak nhtsa must do something to force gm to correct the issue before a lose of life happens and to assist customers with huge cost in break repairs.

Car windows dont go down ,signal lights dont always work

The brake rotors turned twice and replaced once. this caused the brake pads to have to be replaced. the drivers door automatic window motor had to be replaced twice and now the passenger door window was doing the same thing. the interior light fell out and had to be put back in. the sun visor came loose and had to be tightened again. the cd player had to be replaced. a backlash of electricity caused a fuse to be replaced. the car died on a highway and towed to the dealership. the intact manifold leaked, it was tightened up and one month later the same problem happened again. the drivers side seat belt did not detract automatically. *tt

2000 oldsmobile alero - upon replacing the front brake pads my mechanic informed me i needed to replace the rotors. not because they were scored by the brake pads (i still had lining on the pads), but because they were deteriorated because of being made with inferior (soft) metal. he mentioned he saw this before on other vehicles (jeeps) which required a recall. *jb

I bought my oldsmobile alero new in july of 2000. within a few months after purchase i started taking it back to the dealer due to a grinding noise that would happen when i was driving at slower speeds or turning. the dealer couldn't find anything wrong, but suggested i may need new brakes. i was not satisfied with this response since the car was less than one year old and i don't drive any more than the average driver. i then started taking it to a closer dealer (this one was a gm dealer and not specifically oldsmobile). after several visits they told me my brake pads were worn down and needed replaced. by this point it was 2002 and my car had about 20,000 miles on it. i still wasn't sure i agreed with it, but i let them replace my brakes. still heard the noise. i can't even count how many times my car has been to the two dealerships for the same grinding noise. the last time i had it in was in may of 2003. they finally told me about a bulletin regarding tire size and told me this was causing the noise. this bulletin came out a year prior to this service visit and they had looked at my car numerous times. now i'm having trouble with the rotors and from what i've read a lot of other people are too. when i apply the brakes, it feels like the car is jerking to a stop. i think oldsmobile or gm needs to own up to the defect and replace the rotors for those of us who are unlucky enough to own one of their aleros. *jb

Fuel gauge does not work properly-have run out of gas twice when that meter says i have a quarter of a tank. no alarm. contacted the dealer and they informed me that since my warranty is up, i would have to pay for it. spoke with oldsmobile and they say that only canadian cars are covered under the recall.

Intake manifold gasket failure causing leakage of coolant into engine

I have had the rotors replaced 2 times. monday 07/16/2001, i would have been replaced them for the third time. i have contacted oldsmobile customer service, the dealer and gm corporate headquarters. they all say there is no continuing defect, but they replaced the rotors before and will do it one last time at no charge. not only is it frustrating to have to keep returning to the dealer to repair the same problem. but it is also a safety issue. the rotors are warping at a high rate of speed, 70 mph when the brakes are applied harshly. the steering wheel shakes so hard it causes you to loose grip of it. i know of two tsb's written on this problem, #00-05-23-002 and #00-22-002. i also went to the alero web site and there are 58 entries from different people saying they have the same problem. *ph *jb **dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut over to artemis**748277

While driving the sidewall of the rear tire blewout. the manufacturer was contacted and told the consumer to contacted the dealer. the dealer stated that the tire was low on air (goodyear eagle ls p225 sr16). *ts *nlm

Trunk popped open by itself due to water on fuse, water leaking in front and rear of the vehicle, several things have happen due to water leakage, blinkers inoperative due to corrosion on fuse panel, leaking on drivers side fuel panel.

Multiple failures with braking. the vehicle has been to the dealership at least 5 times for brake related repairs. calipers, pads and rotors have all been replaced at least 2 times. first repair was after about 11,000 miles, and basically every 3-5,000 since.

Consumer states while driving the turn signal switch will go out, leaving the vehicle without a turn signal, almost causing an accident. dealer contacted, part is on a national back order. this is the second time switch needed replacing. ts

Consumer stated the brake pads were not even 3000 miles old when both calipers were found to be bad, the left caliper was seized and the bracket that was holding the calipers did not meet design specifications, the rotors were rusted and pitted, consumer requested full reimbursement from the manufacturer, however manufacturer was only willing to reimburse half of the cost if the consumer had original documentation of the brake repairs.ts *jb

After experiencing loss of coolant in my 2000 oldsmobile alero, i was informed that i needed a new intake manifold gasket (it was leaking) which would cost almost $700 to fix. although my vehicle is no longer under warranty, i feel that a leaking intake manifold is a premature repair for a vehicle only 3 years old. i have done some searching and know that i am not the only gm owner with this problem. this problem is obviously a manufacturer defect not to mention a potentially dangerous one. any longer and i would have had a ruined engine that could have caught fire or stalled on the highway. gm needs to take responsibility for this problem.

I have a 2000 olsmobile alero. the turn signal only works about 89% of the time. the manufacturer has redesigned the switch that fixed the problem but will not recall the switch. this is a serious safety issue and is in my opinion due to manufacturer defect. i have heard several other complaints of similiar problems at a yahoo webpage for oldsmobile owners. please follow with this and test, i feel the manufacturer should recall the equipment and be fixed.

Car is not sealed properly, and is doubtful that it ever was. it has been in for repair almost 10 times for water leaks. dealer has noted leaks in door seals, front windshield, sunroof and related draining systems. inevitably, during a sufficient rain, water leaks down the door frame, onto the fuse box inside the car causing electrical problems, including non-working locks, trunk opening randomly, etc.

I have had a constant problem with front and rear brakes on my 2000 alero. dealer replaced front pads and rotors after i continued to complain of problems stopping. the brake problems still persisted after front brakes were changed the rear brakes were bad. i went to the dealer at least four times for the rear rotor problem they told me they could not fiind anything wrong. i had to take it to a independent mechanic to have it fixed even though it was under warranty at the time. i now am having a front wheel bearing problem which oldsmobile will not cover even though there is only 48,000 miles on the car and its not quite three years old. also dealer states they can no longer do warranty work because they no longer sell oldsmobiles. dt

I was involved in a head on crash at 55mph with a gaurd rail after being cut off on an interstate. the body shop manager of where the vehicle was repaired stated that the air bags should have deployed based on the impact and the damage to the m/v the general manager, service manager and body shop manager from where i purchased the car confirmed this to be true as well. as a result of the accident i have undergone surgery and physical therapy (9 months worth), i was further informed by the insrance companies independent medical examiner that the injuries would have been far less severe if the air bags had deployed and that i am lucky to be alive. furthermore i have picture of the m/v shortly after the accident and pictures proving that the air bags did not deploy should you require them. sincerely, craig j. camerlin. *ak

Since the original dealer is no longer with oldsmobile, oldsmobile contacted, but has not responded to letter objecting to the issue not being handled as a warranty issue. the hose clearly showed it had been installed less than half way into the crimp fitting. thus allowing the hose to slide out during normal use. photos had been provided to oldsmobile on 8/26/2002. can you help me get a respomse? the loss of the hose disabled the power steering and disabled the car, which had to be towed to a gm repair shop. nlm

Front driver side power window regulator failed. window will not roll up or down. rear seat does not clasp into proper harness - i too kit to russ darrow and they said a seat is "cosmetic, and it is as fixed as it is going to get".. turn signals do not work 70% of the time. the lighter was pushed into the main jack to be used, the lighter never popped out properly. as a result both jacks are inoperable. rotors were replaced at 37,000 but there is still very loud wobbling noises and tire noise. dealer suggests new tires, the tread is fine on the current tires. new tires will only mask the noises.

The anti-lock brake system is inoperable, it is causing the engine to shut off at any particular time while driving. so i'm afraid that this problem was cause by the oldsmobile manufacturer, and the situation need to be check into.*ak

While driving on the highway the engine cuts off with no warning signs on any of the gauges, and no indication that the engine is going to quit. the first time it happened it took approx. 20 minutes to restart the car. the second and consequential times it happened it cut off at the next 20-50 miles from the previous time. each time the engine would turn over, but wouldn't start until 20-30 minutes of sitting on the side of the highway. auto is currently under warrantee. i've had it at the dealership in the service dept. for 14 days now, and they claim they cannot find the problem, although a technician did take it out on the hi-way, and it happened to him. i'm currently disgusted with the dealership and about to contact the attorney general as this is a safety issue. i was one time sitting on a bridge with no breakdown lane at 9:30 pm and almost got hit by oncoming vehicles while the car was broke down. i'd apprecaite it most greatly if you could investigate this problem. *ak

The driver's side view mirror has vibrated on the vehicle since the day i bought it. i took it at the first oil change and asked them to fix it. they told me that was a known problem with the 2 door alero and there was nothing they could do. the problem was so bad that i could not use the mirror at highway speeds as vehicles would come in and out of view. i eventually contacted oldsmobile about the issue. it turns out their policy is to contact the dealership to confirm the problem (a lot of good that does). i consistentantly compained when i went in for service and evetually there was a service bulletin and they performed the "fix". the fix did nothing so there was nothing else they could do. i intermitantly complained and they eventually replaced the mirror assembly which worked for a few weeks. now, last sunday, on the way back from mt.pleasant the mirror vibrated so bad that what was in the bottom of the mirror one second was in the top the next. when i got up the next morning the mirror was laying on the garage floor as it had fallen off. i called the dealership and took it in. they told me they would only continue to cover the mirror until the manufacturer warranty runs out and my extended warranty i purchased would not cover it. i feel that if it a manufacturing defect it should be covered for life. and, to top it off, they had me take the car, without a mirror home until they could get a mirror (i thought it was illegal to drive without a mirror). i expected a loaner car for my safety. this is getting quite annoying that i have what was a brand new car and have had to put up with this safetyhjazzard for almost two years and there is nothing they can do and they were aware of the problem; therefore, knowingly putting me at risk. what are my options? what can i do? now i have to pay for any repairs or put up with it until my lease expires as i cannot afford to buy out my lease early. alan. nlm

Why cannot gm give people a suggestion to what to put on these cars to stop these things from eating up brakes/rotors. gm gives run around. dealership is in complete agreement these cars have problems so why can they not tell you what to put on them to stop this problem. if they can issue a bullitin on them, then they should have some plan in what they plan on doing to solve this. going in every 3,000 to 5,000 miles for replacements/turning is not normal. if people let these things slide, they are going to be in big trouble. gm builds the cars they should come up with some solutions to solving the issue before it gets out of hand. my car has been in eight times for replacement/turning. it never gets better. something has to be done on this. i paid cash for this car. i have lost my butt and will continue more so when warranty is off these cars. now gm is telling me these are not under warranty. this car has been to a gm dealer since i had 12,000 miles on it. now no warranty. now they want us to pay another $800 to up warranty when they cannot even fix this. please, please help us.*ak

Since i have owned my alero (approximately 1 1/2 years) i have had 5 instances where i have had to take it in to have the brakes pads and rotors replaced. the last two instance were only 3000 miles apart from one another. when i am driving at speeds excess of 50 mph i am afraid to follow anyone remotely close because when i brake the entire car will start shaking and my braking distance is largely increased. so far, all of the replacement work has been done at the dealerships expense, however i have had to lose my car for a day or two every three months to have this problem taken care of. this is extremely inconvenient for me. when i payed this much money for an almost new car with only 15000 miles on it, i expected it to drive like an almost new car. surely someone had to have known that this problem existed with it before they sold it to me. i baby this car like it was my kid. i see no reason that after 5 times of having the brakes worked on they still cannot fix them right! i don't even enjoy driving it much anymore because i'm afraid that my brakes will all of a sudden go out and i'll rear end someone. the first incident was shortly after i purchased the vehicle and i thought nothing of it until they told me not only did they replace the brake pads but the rotors also. the second incident was no more than three months later and i believe they only replaced the pads. the third incident again was within another 3 months or so along with the fourth. each time i noticed that when i would brake at speeds in excess of 50 mph the entire car would start shaking. also when it was raining out i could hear the brakes grinding. and when i would back out of my driveway i could hear them grind. which brings me to the fifth and most recent incident where i almost hit somebody because i had to press the brake pedal down so hard, it almost felt like the brakes had gone out. there's no reason i should have my brakes replaced 5 times over 30,000 miles.

Car stalls while driving-speed does not matter. car will start up after sittiing for a minute but it can only be driven for a few more miles. the longer you let it sit after it stalls the farther you can drive it dowm the road. taken to a gm service tech and after 2 days of test, stated nothing is wrong with the car. 20 miles after leaving the shop with car, it stalled. took it to another mechanic and he found a tsb on the engine/propulsion system , #00-06-04-044, to replace the in-tank strainer (filter) and have not had a problem since. had to pay a gmc srevice tech a lot of money to tell me nothing was wrong when a "shade tree mechanic" found the problem in less than an hour. have seen this complaint many other times for this car and others ( 2000 cavalier, malibu and 2000 grand am, sunfire) why is there no recall on this? would like some information please on this and what i can do about this gm service tech. my car is still under a extended warranty which i believe would have covered this problem i had. *ak

The low tire pressure light comes on even after the tire pressure has been checked and verified by 3 different gauges. even after you reset the light, it comes back on when the tire pressure is correct.*ak

Vehicle was traveling aprox 15-20mph and rear ended a large suv (surburban). substantial damage was done to the front end of the alero with minimal damage to the suv. estimate of damage is $5200 indicating major damage was done to vehicle. air bag system did not deploy. fortunately only minor injury (large bump on forehead from contact with roof of vehicle, seat belt burns and bruises) was incurred by driver of the alero. my question is why the air bags did not deploy to lessen this impact. there has been other electrical problems with this vehicle. wondering if there is a defect or damage to air bag system from earlier services? *ak

Brakes/rototors being replaced and turned. not helping any bit. this is going to become a safety problem when they fail. why not a recall on these instead of a bullatin before someone gets really hurt because brakes failed.*ak

When my wife put the car in reverse to exit the garage, the car accelerated at a high rate of speed. she immediately went to the dealer. she never used the accelerator pedal, just the brake. speeds approached 70 mph on the freeway. the dealership found a bad wire running by or underneath the manifold. they repaired the wire and it corrected the problem.*ak

When i am going at between 40-70 mph and then slow down using my brakes my car will shutter. it has done this ever since i bought it, but i just thought that it was suppose to sound like that. i talked to a friend that has an alero and she said there was a bulletin out about the rotors needing turned. that is what she was told when she went to her dealership. so, i took it in and they said that my brakes were worn out and that my rotors needed turned. my brakes would not have been worn to almost nothing after only 22,000 miles if the rotors would have been manufactured correctly. i am always conscience about braking early. i think this should definitely be a recall!! i personally know of 2 other people(with aleros) this has happened to only one was way worse than mine. i think the manuf. should own up to its mistake and fix all of the alero rotors!!! thank you. *ak

I have had this car in for service of the brakes going on 10 times. each time they have either resurfaced or replaced the rotors and sometimes the pads. when the brakes get wet the car is harder to stop. i have been in touch with gmc customer service but nobody would tell me how to fix this on a more permanent basis.*ak

I noticed a squealing of the brakes last week, took my car to the dealership repair center monday. they informed my that there was a bulletin on my brakes about the rotors being warped and to come back the next morning and they would replace the rotors and pads to be covered under the warranty. tuesday afternoon, i took my car in as per their instructions, i received a call informing me that i would have to pay for this as the brakes were very worn. i have only had this car for a little over a year and have never had to have brakes redone on any car i have ever owned. they informed me that it was unsafe to drive, handed me the keys and told me to go, it was close to closing time. they had told me the day before that the rotors on this car were defective and they would repair it then sent me away with faulty brakes. but before they would give me my keys they presented me with a diagnostic bill even tho they had already diagnosed the problem the day before and told me i was covered due to the defect and to come back tuesday. thanks for allowing me to vent even if there is nothing you can do to help me. leann patterson. *ak

The car has failed 4 times for the same reason in 14 months all fuel related the car was told to us each time to be fixed .when you buy a new car you assume the car will run without problems for a reasonable period of time we now feel that the car is unsafe to drive because you never know when the car will just shut down on you and you have no control of it thanks olds for the great car that my wife is scared to drive. *ak

I bought this car in may 2000. in november 2000, the rotors were replaced because my car was shaking when i would brake to slow down. in june 2001, i am having the same problem and the rotors are being replaced again! i am at 19,000 miles and my brake pads were completely worn. the dealership told me it was normal for brake pads to go bad after 20,000 miles. i have never had problems like this before with a brand new car. *ak

Bought this vehicle new on 8/3/00, since then the rotors have been replaced due to excessive warping 3 times. problem still exists. warped rotors prevent the abs braking system from functioning properly. car shakes violently when braking at highway speeds resulting in extended stopping distances and creates a major safety concern, some accidents have already occurred, must someone's life be claimed before something is done? i have contacted the manufacturer who was very rude and disconcernig with regard to this problem. in researching this problem, i have discovered that these cars and other makes are very prone to this problem and gm has no permanent repair for it. the quality and safeness of the alero is unacceptable general motors should be pressured until they can fix this design problem.

The gear shift does not lock, and is easy to knock out of gear (drive to n+1+2+3 and reverse to n+1+2+3). the gear shift indicator turns so hot u can feel it through your jeans. i have to jiggle the gear shifter until it pops just to get the key out of the ignition everytime i cut my car off. the car was on with key in the ignition (of course) while automatically locking me out on many different occasions. there is also a real slight knocking in the front axle. --- the detailed story -- while my wife and 2 kids were traveling back down to columbus,ga. i was going about 70 mph in the fast lane, after checking the mirrors. at that time i reached over to grab the map, while barely tipping the gear shifter with my fingertips. the gear shifter popped into neutral...(all of this happened in less then about 10 seconds)... which dropped the car from 70 mph to 50-55 mph, which in turn made the suv that jumped into my lane behind me to accelerate was aware enough to hit his brakes and then vere off to the other lane...thank god that the only thing i got from the other driver was an upset facial expression instead of his front bumper on top of my kids in the backseat....well after taking the car to an dealership in va beach, va. for some of these problems, all i was offered was written excuses---but nothing was fixed...so i decided to call the oldsmobile company, after they called the dealership they just repeated the excuses of what was the written excuses that was given to me the first time....so i told the man i understand that he just works there and i appreciate the fact that he ( i guess) tried to help me. but what if this incident would have taken the turn for the worst. all he said was "well it's now documented, in case of a future fatality" ----if you ask me, then it will be too late. this is not the only problem i have had with this vehicle and there is not even 18,000 miles on it. i'm truthfully lost because this my 1st new car and i usually out to sea. can u help

Car consistently wobbles while driving. dealer replaced struts, rotors and brake pads. problem still exists. *ak

Brakes failed with no warning. going down hill when front pads gave out and assembly dug into rotors. required replacement of pads, rotors and miscellaneous components. dealer (burne olds in scranton, pa) told me alero brakes were under recall, but not mine. i had to pay the $400 for replacement. contacted gm to complain and was told it was my problem. if there had been a warning, i could have had them serviced before complete failure and resultant damage (front rims were scorched from the heat from the failed brakes). i was very lucky that i was able to get car stopped and to service before being involved in severe accident.*ak

I am being charged for brake replacement at 23,000 miles by a dealer,so i called for another opinion. when i called two other dealers and oldsmobile themselves (bruce) i was told this is a common problem. i asked if this is common why am i paying for something that should be warranty, they said brakes are consumable and if this problem reoccurs they would cover it than but for now i must pay to have the brakes replaced and rotors repaired $207.50. *ak

I have had multiple problems with this car from the day i purchased it, 3 wks after purchase is when the pwr steering went out and i was 400 miles from home w/o assistance. crefuses to recognize any of these problems and i feel this car is a lemon and safety hazard to me and my family.

For the third time i am having the front brake rotors resurfaced because they are warped. if i brake sharply at expressway speeds of 60mph and above i get a violent shaking transmitted into the steering wheel from the warped rotors. i sent olds an e-mail asking if there were known problems with soft (insufficently hardened) front brake rotors on the alero and they would not respond to my request in writing (via e-mail) they suggested i call their 800 number for customer service and open a complaint, which i did. it wasn't until i searched your database, seeing a number of similar brake rotor problems that i decided to submit a report to you. i never took this car to the dealer from whom i purchased it for this problem because it only began after about 13,000 miles (out of warranty). i beleive that there is a materials quality problem here probably with the rotors not being sufficiently hardened during the manufacturing process.*ak

1. rear, outboard shoulder/seatbelt lock-up mechanism would not lock up when attempting to install child safety seat in accordance with vehicle owner manual instructions. seat installation next attempted at rear, center location. safety seat base could not be securely attached becaues of apparent conflict between belt latch location & safety seat loop pass-thru location.*ak

Since new this vehicle has had a loud grinding noise coming from front brakes in wet weather. it does not happen all the time, and when it does vehicle is hard to stop. it feels like abs is engaging under normal driving. the dealer cannot find problem, but this has been going on since we purchased it. it happens at all speeds and on normal braking (not hard braking). we have complained since june of this year and have had it in the shop at least 5 times for this problem. we fear that in an emergency the abs will not work like it is supposed to. our issue is that the dealer can't find a problem. it doesn't rain much here so it's hard to predict. it even happens when we are on our way to the dealer but will not happen after that. thank you for your time.*ak

The dome light flickers and sometimes cuts-off completely. problems since i bought car. engine cut-off when i turn-off ac. runs rough, them turns-off completely. service cant find any reason for these problems. i worry about this car. another "lemon"?

This vehicle's brakes on front heat up turn rotor's blue and warp them....we as of 10/2000 have had 2 new set's of rotor's on this vehicle and had one set resurfaced and turned because they we're warped.. we currently have a call to area serv. rep from gm the rotor's are blue again..this is 4 time's in less than 5 month's. we are still being played with it is time for some help. our vehicle has spent many many time's in the shop already we feel it's a safty issue they pulse and are spongy, there's vibration in the steering wheel at 65 and over if you have to apply the brake's. constantly same complaint with no satisfaction but that they continue to blame the problem's on us.

Purchased the car in may. brand new with 7 miles on it at date of purchase. brake rotors in the front needed to be replaced at 3000 miles. they were warped/out of specs which caused my brakes not to work properly. then at 6200 miles, the rotors in the front were replaced again. they were warped/out of spec and caused my brakes to work improperly. both of the rotors in the front are warped from both times. i am not sure if this is a reoccurrent problem with all alero owner but from what i understand, quite a few people who own these cars have had problems along the same line. also, i would like to know what are the details of the lemon law. thank you for your time.*ak

When applying brakes steering wheel shimmies bad and brakes are making a sound even when brakes are not being applied

The driver's side power seat moved forward without the button being pushed to activate it. it would not stop when the button was pushed to reversed the motion. it stopped only when the seat reached its full forward position. fortunately, i was parked and could jump out of the car. had i been in motion, i could have been unable to control the vehicle as my knees would have been smashed into the dashboard and my abdomen would have been smashed into the steering wheel. i took the car to a gm garage where they told me they had never heard of this happening before and they didn't know what to do. they ended up disconnecting the power to the seat and said they would call the factory. *ak

Car completely shuts down while driving and will not restart. this occurred on 3 separate occasions during rainy conditions. 1st occasion vehicle was towed to dealer and while at the dealer it started right up. they checked the computer but were unable to find any reason for the problem. 2nd occurance was approximately 2 weeks later and dealer was notified. after vehicle dried out, it started. dealer made an appointment to check the vehicle 9/5/2000. 3rd occurance - 9/3/2000- unable to restart vehicle. tow truck contacted and towed to dealer.

The front end started to shake violently when braking at speeds starting at 65-70 mph. the dealer fixed the problem the first time replacing warped rotors. the second time the dealer told me they would have to contact oldsmobile engineering to find a fix. i have had allot of nuisence problems but this vehicle is very unsafe with no real fix available.

Front rotors warped at 2500 miles but not replaced per the dealer for 5000 more miles. also, water leaking through both doors (l and r) and has been repaired multiple times. they are now using duct tape to "fix" the leak and they tell me this is legitimate. water leaks every time it rains. *ak

This alero is junk we have not been happy with it since we bought it.two paint jobs, brake work,transmission shifts too hard, car run hot ,long list would like to have a car that isnt a hunk of junk

Consumer states the traction and ses antilock lamps came on, vehicle was taken into shop due to brakes making a grinding noise, consumer was informed problem could not be duplicated, however a week later consumer was informed, that brakes were indeed needed after she had already comlained of the grinding noise, the technician indicated that they knew there was a problem, however oldsmobile would not let them do anything about it until a bulletin was issued.*jb

The original front brake rotors in my 2000 oldsmobile alero (3.4l gls) have worn out far before they should have. from what information i have now found in newspapers and on the internet, this is a common problem with the 1999-2000 alero (and pontiac grand am); gm now manufactures new brake rotors to use as replacements. however, the gm garage that i had my car fixed at (walt sweeney pontiac, cincinnati, oh) did not replace the faulty rotors, but merely machined them so that they won't squeal/pulsate. i called oldsmobile to ask whether this was standard procedure, and whether i could have the new, safer brake rotors installed on my alero: the customer service person i talked with said that the rotors are machined down (made smooth) if it isn't *absolutely* necessary to replace them. everything i've read on the 2000 alero's brake rotors indicates that they are substandard, and unsafe... there are even a few technical service bulletins out from gm about this (00-05-22-002a, 00-05-23-002a). i believe that the brake rotors are faulty and unsafe; gm, i think, knows this, and has updated their product. i believe that gm should hold a recall and should be replace the brake rotors under warranty; at the very least, when the brake rotors wear out, they should certainly be replaced with the new, more durable brake rotors, rather than sanded down to be replaced again when they wear out in a few months, endangering road safety.*ak

Car would be going down highway, and just stop running, this also happen to me back in august of this year, i took it into the dealer and they could not find anything wrong with it, then yesterday coming back from vacation it did the same thing, its now at the dealer and they havn't found why it just stops running. back in august it ran fine for over a month, it ran fine after sitting over nite to take it to the dealer today.*ak
