2000 JEEP Grand Cherokee

My jeep has a shaking problem that has been happening for many years but is getting much worse. I have to have a death grip on the steering wheel to control the vehicle. I have had it realigned and new tires but just happens sparadically.

Vehicle has gas tank known to explode in rear end crashes

Currently experiencing what has become known as the Jeep “Death Wobble.” Over the speed of 35mph, if vehicle hits a small bump or a series of small bumps, the front end will slowly start shaking back and forth, gradually increasing in intensity to a violently unstable wobble. The only remedy at that point is to decrease speed to less than 35mph.

Extreme front end chatter – starts, sometimes, at about 50 MPH – does not happen all the time, but when it does, only slowing way down makes it go away – once or twice, taking the speed up to above 65 also diminished the chatter…the shaking is strong!

Within 3 years of purchasing our Jeep every door lock on it failed (drivers & passenger front and rear and the lift gate). The first door lock to fail was the drivers side. It failed in the summer of 2002, Luckily it was still under warranty. Our local Jeep dealer repaired it at no cost to us. In 2003 the front and rear passenger door locks failed and rear drivers side failed. Took it to the local dealer and wouldn’t you know, it was not under warranty. The cost was $250.00 a door. In Fall of 2005 the rear lift gate lock failed. Since then very disappointed in our Jeep.

we were driving down the road we smelled elecricial burning smell and seen smoke come from under dash on passenager side. we went to local jeep dealer they told us it was electrial box for blower motor. so we got a new one and wiring harness replaced it. 2 weeks later it melted again getting hot enough to melt the plastic casing in the box. so i called jeep complained they told me to take it to dealer so they could check it out and have them to call them, so we did. The problem was blower motor was pulling to many amps, box and wiring burnt up again., vent flap inside heater box just fell off. My wife and kids very easy could have burnt up in this vehcile and jeep will not make it right. total repairs to fix it is 1,000.00 they refused to pay anything. now transfer case the progressive couplert went out and cost 950.00 but jeep says the whole transfer case has to be rebuilt which cost 2700. dollars and a new one is 3200.so we know have a jeep with the smell of burnt wiring and plastic and no four wheel drive. I think 900.00 for the repair on the a/c wasnt much to ask them for considering my very easy could have burnt up in it because of bad parts. the guy at the dealer told me when i bought the part i needed a wiring kit because the part burns the wiring when it goes out. So that told me there well aware of the problem.

Violent shaking of steering wheel during moderate brake application caused by variation in brake rotor thickness. Solution is to install differently designed brake calipers with new rotors as outlined in DCX tsb 05-003-02B. The dealer cost for these items is approximately $375 for the rotors and calipers plus labor.This is a common problem for Grand Cherokees from 1999 through 2004 and is a safety related item which should be covered for by Diamler Chrysler.

Vehicle involved in major solo head-on auto accident,Airbag system did not work property on driver and passenger sides, and completely fail tofunction causing severe bodily and neorologic injuries to my son.Please help us on this matter.Thanks.

This vehicle is an owners nightmare and another reason for folks to consider imports, which is my intention when this P.O.S. finally dies. The power locks failed along with the ignition switch well under 60k miles. The vehicle will try to accelerate when stopped at a light when the ac/defroster is on. The brakes, holy smokes, are an absolute embarrassment and mechanical failure for Chrysler. The softer metal used this model year gives one that nice horse and buggy ride and keep you guessing if the damn thing will even stop! What a huge piece of ….junk. Never again, Chrysler!

This car’s brakes are a piece of crap. The rotors warp and brakes need repair about once every 15,000 miles. Eventually, I had the brakes replaced with the modified 2003 model year brakes and have had much better results, with no warping or failures for over 20,000 miles now, but at a cost of nearly $2000 to me. Jeep should offer these redesigned brakes to all 99-02 Grand Cherokee owners since there is obviously a failure in the design of the older style brakes. Normal brakes don’t warp rotors or wear down after 10-15K miles of normal driving.Secondly, I am currently at 98,000 miles and am on my thirsd battery. Why does this vehicle kill batteries? This is not normal.FYI, I bought the car brand new in March 2000 with less than 20 miles on the odometer and have done every single service on time and within +/- 500 miles of the recommended interval. These problems are rediculous because they are recurring and obviously have nothing to do with maintenance, but rather some sort of design deficiency that Jeep should be forced to correct, regardless of vehicle age or mileage.

The Jeep Grand Cheerokee 2000 that I own has a problem with the brakes. I have been to the manufacturer dealership about this problem and they say “the brakes do not need changing yet, but Jeep is aware of the shaking problem that the 2000 model carries when you brake.” Everytime I brake at a high rate between 35-55 mph the car shakes and it seems like I am going to lose control.

The driver’s seat frame has broken resulting in unstable condition for the operator of the vehicle.

RPM\’s of Engine will suddenly increase while car is stopped at Stop (Red)light without warning. Car will lurch forward 3-5 feet even though exessive pressure is applied to break pedal. Car is basically unsafe to drive.

One of the metal brackets holding the driver\’s seat to the floor split, detaching the seat from the floor, leaving the seat swaying on one bracket. I weigh 200 lbs, the car has never been in an accident and has never climbed mountains (as in the Jeep commercials) so there have been no unusual stresses put on the seat frame. I\’m concerned that, if the car is in a serious accident, the seat would break away from the floor supports and contribute to a serious injury. The dealer has now told me that the car needs a new seat frame and the cost is $675.00. Jeep Customer Service would not help. On other websites I have seen other similar consumer complaints about Jeep driver\’s seat break-away.

I will never buy Jeep again and I warn everyone to stay away too. The PCM or Primary Control Mechanism gets faulty at about 60,000 miles and Chrysler cannot produce a replacement part that actually fixes the problem. We waited for a month for a replacement part because there was such a back-order on this part. Once we got the replacement part (we got it twice), it either made the problems worse or didn\’t work at all. The problems were erratic and unnecessary downshifting and upshifting as well as hesitation in both acceleration and in staying the same speed. These behaviors are harrowing and dangerous at any high speeds. Chrysler should be ashamed of themselves in sticking their head in the ground on such a major issue.

I purchased the jeep in September of 2002 and about 2 weeks after purchasing the window on the passenger side failed to roll down. I had a friend of mine fix it once who is a mechanic and it done the same thing and he fixed it again and a day later it was broke yet again. The tire came off the rim and I had to get it glued back on. A week later it came off again and I had to get it fixed again. This really aggravated me because I have a 4 month old baby and if I would have been going on the highway or something at a fast speed I would have had an accident. The transmission is going out already and it only had 55000 miles when it began doing this. I paid a lot of money for this jeep and it turns out to be a peice of crap. I cannot go far because of the transmission. It has a very hard time shifting from 1st to 2nd and I am afraid one day it is going to give out on me. I am a young mother and I am sorry but cannot afford to fix the problem. I feel that a 2000 with only 55000 miles on it should hold up better than this. I will never ever by another jeep because of all of the problems I have had with this one. It is not worth it and I would not recommend anyone else to get one either. You need to figure out a better way to build it or fix them so that nobody else has to go through what we are going through.

I purchase a used 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee in Nov of 2000 with 19k miles. Two day later, I had to bring it in for for service there was a severe wobbling when I stepped on the brake pedal. Well, the shop replaced a part which they claimed would fix the problem..well, my wife took it in again 4 months later for the pulsation again. The dealer Bob Howards, Crown Auto World 4444 S. Sheridan in Tulsa, OK replaced the rotors while still under warranty. In May of 2001 the same problem popped up again we took in once again for the same problem, (brake pulsation). Dealer turned the rotors again and about 6000 miles later warranty was over and we took it to Midas Mufflers and they said that was not normal. I have a 93 T-bird and never had such a thing happen. I returned to the dealer to inquire about this problem and I was told that Jeep Cherokees from 98-2000 were fitted with a smaller size rotor and it was a factory defect. Chrysler Corporation was going to replace free of charge to owners affected with a bigger size rotor and calliper/pads to correct the problem. They admitted it was a factory defect. And all owners of jeeps that had 50k miles or less out of warranty, they would pay for half of the replacement. Anyone else is on there own. They knew of this defect and now they are making everyone to pay for this problem.. They knew about this defect and chose not to corrected their mistake now, they are making their customers pay for the factory defect..I would be willing to join in on a class action suit for damages

I have had MUCH work done on the brakes -replaced the rotors 2x since I had this vehicle (not quite 2years) and they are still not right. I was stranded one day last summer when the vehicle went dead after fueling. I was told by the dealer I purchased it from that it was just the battery (I had just had it serviced the week before). I still find this solution hard to believe.I had the water pump replaced this year after many run ins at the dealer complaining about them not checking my fluid levels when servicing. Found out later from a local mechanic that it was the water pump -after the warrenty had expired. I can’t believe that a car that was still low mileage (30,000) when I bought it – could have this many problems.

I bought this vehicle less than 4 months ago and it began leaking antifreeze within the first month. I brought it to Crest Lincoln where I bought it for an oil change and asked them to look at why the antifreeze was leaking. They informed me that due to the car being 3 weeks over the warranty, if something was indeed wrong they could not help me unless I paid out of pocket charges. I then brought the car to a repair shop and they told me that it could be the thermostat. This did not solve the problem even though the car was not over heating. The Problem: The car is still leaking in more than one place. Today it was a continual leak. I called the dealer and I called Chrysler and they will not repair the vehicle at their own cost. The engine is possibly cracked but they will charge me $400 to do the diagnostic and I will not only have to pay out of pocket for that but also the total cost of the repair until I can settle this with Chrysler or the dealer. This price was estimated around $6000.00. The car is only 3 years old with less than 36,000 miles on it.

I am a independent used auto dealer in northern California. I just had a customer, who bought a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4X4 with 48,000 miles 4 months ago, call me to say that the transfer case just exploded and damaged the front differential. On at least 3 prior occasions I have bought 99-00 Jeep Grand Cherokees for resale and had to replace either the transfer case or the rear differential in order to sell the vehichle due to extreme howling or grinding noises coming from the divetrain. All of these vehichles were purchased at auction from Daimler Chrysler Fleet services at Adesa Golden Gate Auto Auction with full guarantee. I was recently informed that Daimler Chrysler Fleet Services will no longer arbitate the sale of any more of these vehichles because it is such a frequent occurance. This leads me to believe that they are aware of this problem and are unwilling to correct the problem. All of the vehichles that I puchased had less than 50,000 miles on them and at least one was under the 36,000 mile warranty limit, but over the 3 year limit. I hope that someone can look into this, as it is apparent that there is a problem with this vehichle which Daimler Chrysler is obviously aware of. Fuel system – first fuel pump replaced 9/02 – under warranty – 2nd fuel pump being replaced 8/03 – customer pays total cost Problem – hard to start – takes two or three times.power door – front and back power door locks replaced 10/02 and 12/02 – no warranty – customer pays total Problem – When unlocking or locking doors, there was a loud (awful) noise.Both are known defects to manufacturer with tech. serv. bulletins. I know other jeep owner, same model and year who has had to have both replaced, fuel pump twice.

Front brake rotors have warped badly at 38,000 miles and again at 49,000 miles. Dealer claims that problem is not covered by warranty. Car has been driven a mix of city and highway miles. No off-road driving.

Experienced extreme vibration and pulsing of breaks. Dealer told us it was warped rotors and there was a TSB issued, but no recall. We had to pay for the entire repair. Now, 10,000 miles later we are experiencing the same problem again. We only drive the car in the city, never off road. Jeep should issue a recall and pay for the repairs as this seems to be a very common problem.

Electric fan recall notice denied due to wrong information from Allen Samuels Chrysler Jeep\’s service advisor Hans.Here is what happened, the original fan on our 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee explode on us while on the road, it broke into many pieces and damaged the shroud. At the time there was no recall and we went ahead and replaced it with an after market fan. Since the car is not our main driving vehicle we did not drive it much and end of June 2006 we took it to Allen Samuels Chrysler Jeep Dealer to have it permanently fixed since it acted like there was still a problem. We paid almost $1000 for a new fan, shroud, and thermostat. Right before Thanksgiving we got a recall notice in the mail from Chrysler on the fan being recalled and for the people that already had the problem fixed to send in the original receipt for reimbursement. We took a road trip for Thanksgiving and on the way back the car overheated, but somehow we made it back. We took the car back to Allen Samuels Chrysler Jeep where they had the car for 6 hours to check it out. At first they said it is probably the thermostat but could also be the radiator. When the technician was done with the car we were told they only had to replace the thermostat that it was defective and still under warranty. On our way home the car started overheating again, but unfortunately the Dealership was already closed so we had to make it home again. When we called the dealer a few days later we were told that it was the thermostat and they already replaced it and we need to bring it back in to have it checked out again but it wouldn\’t be covered by any warranty. When we first took the car in after our trip we also told the dealership about the recall and they said it won\’t be a problem to get reimbursed, just to mail in the receipt and recall notice. So we did mail it all in and we got a phone call from Chrysler denying the claim since Hans at Allen Samuels Chrysler Jeep told them the problem was caused by the after market fan. So I called Hans to ask him why he told Chrysler it was caused by the after market fan if we originally came in with the blown up original fan and a broken shroud and thermostat. He said in their system it states that they replaced the after market fan because it was not blowing enough air. Well that is wrong, but unfortunately Hans was not willing to be helpful and take care of the matter. He also said that he told us when we brought the car in that we have to have a new radiator to keep the car from overheating and he was there when the technician told us the same thing. About the after market fan, it was replaced because the original fan exploded, if that would not have happened we would have never needed an after market fan and we would not be in this situation, but Chrysler and Hans don\’t see it that way. I believe if there is a recall on a part and we already had it happen to us and we paid out of pocket we should get our money back. We also had the driver side seat Bracket brake and Chrysler told us that it is not a safety issue and even if it was they would not fix it. We will definetely NEVER do business with Allen Samuels Chrysler Jeep again nor by a Chrysler product which unfortunately is getting harder since they have their fingers in everything these days.

Drivers side rear door lock is broken, not working, known defect on model, manufacturer wont fixBrakes pulsate badly when any pressure applied to pedal. previous owner fixed twice, problem restarted immediately. Ongoing issue, known defect , manufacturer won’t fix.

Drivers seat, top left restraining bolt track ripped open to cause seat and car undriveable.

Door locks don’t always unlock. Does not allow you to unlock automatically or manually. Which is a huge safety problem when trying to exit the vehicle.

brake rotors warped. Also, the cruise started acting strange, and the engine would fluctuate constantly. They fixed that once. Now the problem is back. Also, the hood struts that hood the hood up will no longer hold it up. This is dangerous. I complained and they said they would be glad to sell me new ones.

air conditioning/heat blend door broken for no apparent reason. COst of repair is $1000. I have had 3 batteries changed so far. Battery dies every summer. Brakes worn out every 10,000 miles

Wrecked and airbags didn’t deploy also when hit pot hole bounced all the way off road; then brakes were ineffective causing me to strike power pole

2000 jeep grand cherokee with a recall for the fan. the customer stated he went to have the fan replaced, however after he left the dealer and drove 10 miles, the radiator was completely out of water. *kb the consumer returned to the dealer and was told it would cost $500.00 to replace the radiator. the consumer stated he should not have to pay for something that was supposedly fixed under recall.*jb

Jeep grand cherokee customer is looking for reimbursement for brake pulsation problems**nar**cc the consumer wrote in about 2 jeeps that she owns. the consumer started hearing sounds at 15 thousands miles. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for a soft pedal. it wasn't until 46,000 miles that the rotors had to be resurfaced. at 53,000 miles the brakes began pulsating and the dealer recommended replacing the rotors when the pads were due for change, in which the consumer was charged for the inspection and also stated it was a normal jeep problem. the consumers second jeep also needed rear rotors because they were warped.(2004 jeep grand cherokee) *jb

Consumer complaint concerning the electric radiator fan failure. *ts the consumer was denied reimbursement because according to the manufacturer, no fan blades were physically broken. the consumer stated even though no fans were broken, he still experienced extreme engine overheating. *jb

While idling the vehicle would surge or suddenly accelerate. this problem occurs while driving and is becoming more frequent. the vehicle will be inspected by a dealership. *ak

My husband was involved in a near head on collision. he was traveling about 10 mph and was hit by a vehicle going about 35mph. his fender hit the center of our grill. our bumper was torn off, the hood pushed up to the windshield and the motor pushed to a 45 deg. angle. the jeeps airbags did not deploy, the other vehicles did. *tr

When exiting the express way yesterday, my airbag light turned on and dinged about 3 times and turned off. this is the first time my grand cherokee laredo has done this in the year that i have owned it. i'd like to note my previous car, a 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited, would have this issue everyday. it is not safe for my airbags to be disabling while my car is in motion. especially since it is having a stalling issue as well. this could be fatal given the right circumstances.

For going on 2 months now my car has stalled at the most inconvenient times. turning into gas stations, stopping at stop lights, driving on busy streets going up to 50mph. usually i can just pop it into neutral and restart it but as of late, it won't turn back over until i replace the ignition fuse. i have replaced that fuse twice now, replaced the map sensor, replaced the fuel filter, yet nothing has offered a permanent solution to this problem. as you can clearly tell, this is a very dangerous problem to be having and by reading through these complaints i see i am far from alone. not to mention the cost associated with having to replace all of these parts (per advice from mechanics) while getting nowhere. please fix this or figure out what is causing it before someone gets seriously injured or worse. i'd also like to note my 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited was having this same problem before i junked it.

Vehicle was in motion on city street and engine quit at 40mph. this endagered driver, passenger, and other vehicles on the road.

Sudden stalling while driving or at idle. applicable at all speeds from idle to freeway speeds. sometimes the vehicle will restart and other times it will not restart right away. sometimes it will restart if the vehicle sits for about 15 minutes and other times it has left me stranded for three hours or more. i have stalled in the middle of busy intersections and freeways. i have taken the vehicle in for repairs three times, have paid over $400 in repair bills to have parts replaced and the issue still occurs. there are many complaints in internet forums for the exact same thing and most seem to lead to a faulty engine control module. i have not yet replaced the engine control module myself since they can cost over $400 and the dealer cannot guarantee that this will fix it. with all of the complaints regarding this reoccurring issue, i believe that this should warrant n investigation and possible recall due to safety concerns of vehicles stalling. the stalling has happened numerous times. i have no single date that i can provide. i have quit driving this vehicle since november due to concern for safety.

Driver seat floor bracket cracked for the second time in four years. seat is unstable anytime.

I presently don't have a picture of the gas pouring out from the gas tank area. i can get you one upon your request. their is already a investigation on my jeep in the works. the problem is getting worse. the fumes are making me sick from within. my gas tank is leaking from somewhere. i've was pulled over from a stranger on the road after filling the tank up twice in one week last week. the man said my gas is leaking out. i ask how he knew and his response was my fumes were coming into his car and my tank under the jeep was wet. i got out and went to investigate to see fuel pouring out from underneath the gas tank. i immediately drove home and parked my jeep. i observe dead grass in my yard also where its parked. this type of smelling of fumes and witnesses of my fuel wasting on the ground is a consists occurrence from strangers. both traveling on the streets of daytona beach florida, parked at my friends house as well as my own yard.

In motion the car shakes violently. i was on the freeway and almost wrecked the car from the shaking. i have bad back pain and scared to drive. my 4 year old is terrified of getting near the car. *tr

The suv randomly shuts down like someone unplugged it and will not start. sometimes it will start after 10-15 minutes and shut down again. i replaced the oxygen sensor, the crank sensor, idle control sensor, and the car computer. *tr

Steering wheel hard to keep in single lane. new tires, balanced, and alignment all accomplished. still hard to keep in single lane.

No start

The jeep will suddenly cut off while driving, this has happened to me and my family several times on the highway. i replaced ( crankshaft sensor, camshaft sensor, air idle control valve, & pcm) . still shuts down. took it to several shops and know one can find the problem why? i've been doing alot of research, and noticed alot of jeep owers are having the same problems?

Cranked 2000 jeep drove 1.5 mile car just stops running doing 40 mph. insert key jeep will not start . randomly stops during operation. indicating key not recognized. mileage 122000. jeep will not run. car runs fine when in operation but then wham it just stops. can’t control the jeep steering locks up. happened 6 times already. repairs shop tried of towing it. no know fix! going to get killed jeep shuts down at any time. no one knows how to repair. manufacturers defect.

This vehicle has a tendency to "stall" at any moment, unexpectedly. i have had the dealer and other mechanics try to fix this problem with no luck.

Anti-theft is keeping the jeep from working. the vehicle starts and dies after 2-3 seconds. i have googled it on the internet and there are literally tons of people on you tube/facebook (even some licensed mechanics) complaining about the issue.

Dashboard lights and alarms simultaneously blink on and off. seems to be a short circuit in the wiring. gas tank levels off at "empty", and the fuel gauge spins 180 degrees so that it is caught under the "resting stick" at 0, therefore, no longer reading the gauge. this happens while in motion and while parked.

Seat began rocking laterally when cornering. inspection indicated all seat parts were firmly attached. entering a parked vehicle on a cold evening, the seat rotated to the right and backward slightly. since then the seat will not adjust fore/aft on its rails nor am i able to bring the seat into its original upright position. i receive a warning that the seatbelt is not buckled even though the belt is firmly buckled. the vehicle has never been in an accident.

Vehicle stalls intermittently, usually at the worst possible time. i understand that this is large problem and affects many chrysler models. forums have page after page of people with the same problem. it is the electrical connection to the pcm. connectors become loose and cause vehicle to stall randomly. it is a manufacturer issue! is someone going to have to die to get this problem resolved. i have put thousands of dollars into this vehicle and no resolution!

Car's instrument panel went wild w hen i started the car.every warning light came on and stayed on. gauges worked immediately after starting the car, but slowly lost power to keep them on, and they went to the "key off" position. nothing on the drivers armrest worked, no seat auto positioner, no window open, shut, or lock. information panel overhead went dead (blank).

January 9 2018, the heated seat in my newly purchased jeep burnt me so badly that 6 weeks later i still havent healed completely. i do have a photos of injured area and it's current condition is last pic. these seats need recalled, it could have been even word-for-word child or old person with thin skin, it was so painful to shower, sit, or much less move during this healing .

Brake lights, running lights, tail lights, turn signals dont work. sitting still or moving.

I was driving the jeep and took it to the repair shop to get the muffler fixed upon getting it to the shop the security key light came on and the jeep wont start also the key can be removed from the egnition when in the on position . the key can fall out while driving ... the recall was never fixed and the key wont work with the jeep now and im told its a $1,800 fix .

Gasoline spewing from top of tank after filling. seems to be coming from top of tank - vent tube. i cannot find a recall on this item on the nhtsa website but i found a recall campaign 00v195000. the dealer denies that this recall exists. dealer is hill-kelly in pensacola, fl. happens when vehicle is stopped at gasoline pump/service station.

Car shakes badly after 60 mph and in the morning the steering wheel locks and i turn it left/right and can't unlock it sometimes for hours. it is happening more then ever now. i purchased this vehicle in 2015.

Bought this 2000 grand cherokee limited and while driving it at 55 mph, it lost power for about 5 seconds and then regained power. the next day it stalled at a stop sign but was able to restart after several tries. was driving a couple days later and while slowing down for another stop sign the vehicle stalled and was luckily able to get to the side of the road out of traffic. today the vehicle stalled again today approaching a red light and thankfully was able to get it to the median out of traffic. after reading post onlines, this seems like a known and common issue with the jeeps with stalling which occurs at both low and high speeds which can be dangerous if it stalls and no steering or braking abilities. a recall needs to be done since jeep dealership can't answer to the true issue. replaced fuel pump and filter with no success

Vehicle stalls after reaching operating temperature while negotiating traffic or driving, regardless of conditions or driving habits, at highway speeds or in a parking lot. has stalled numerous times at worst possible times. no codes. no warning: in traffic. at stop lights. pulling into gas stations. etc... extremely dangerous!!!!! date submitted is the last time it happened. it has happened at least 10 times just this year. looked on many jeep forums and seems to be a recurring problem!!! The v8 engine quits running at both full speed and at idle without warning. all engine function is lost immediately. the vehicle will not restart until approximately 1 hour has past. the vehicle then operates normally until the next, unexpected engine failure. attempt to find the issue have included the replacement of the crank position sensor, replacement of the electrical relay for the full pump, replacement of the fuel filter.

One week ago without warning at 35 mph going straight ahead car warning chime started and airbag warning light came on then went off. now it constantly blinks on at random times, no apparent reason, i.e., stopped, driving at various speeds straight ahead, left or right turns, up or down hills, starting off or parked. now becoming more and more frequent, sometimes for a minute or so it remains on, sometimes no more than for a few seconds. found numerous other similar complaints have been filed on this site when looking for any recall information.

My jeep shakes really badly. has been going on for a long time but getting worse. i have to steer with a death grip on the wheel while it is happening. have had jeep realigned and tires replaced and balanced. action is sparadic but is still doing it more often.

Upon warming up to operating temperature, the engine shuts off of our jeep grand cherokee limited. it has 81,000 very well cared for miles on it. this has happened at almost every conceivable speed (0-5mph, 10-25mph, 40-50mph, 55-80mph) and, at the most inopportune times, ie; pulling into a gas station, merging with traffic, entering an intersection, coming to or leaving a stop light, driving at steady roadway or highway speeds. my wife was nearly killed several times due to the sudden and utter loss of all power. this can and does happen on every type of road or street or highway and in every type of weather. this happens on a regular basis although there are times when we can go a week with no episodes. upon a little investigation, i have come across multiple sites and forums where many, many people have this exact same problem. some have taken it to the dealer where they scratch their heads and say the problem can't be duplicated. others have spent much money on mechanics and parts only to have the problem persist. others have attempted to fix the problem themselves with only marginal results at best. this problem occurs in a broad spectrum of production years and across a wide variety of jeep models with the v8 and straight 6, although other engines have had similar episodes. in the field below, i am using yesterday's date as the last time this has happened although it has happened at least 40 times in the last year.

The right passenger and back right door won't unlock after pressing the unlock switch on the door panels. needs to be unlocked manually.

Vehicle engine unexpectedly quits while driving at all speeds form urban to highway. almost encountered a collision on the highway and at an urban intersection due to engine shutoff.this has occurred several times and so far chrysler dealer has been unable to fix the problem.

First: i had purchased this vehicle used with approx. 110,000 miles on odometer. steering wheel violently shakes on moderate to heavy braking as well as moderate shaking upon deceleration on highway surfaces as well as interment clunking from frontal suspension area under similar conditions. the steering wheel may be pointed straight ahead or at a slight left or right position. there are times when the shaking, under the above conditions, is very slight or nonexistent at all. i believe it is in the front steering linkage/suspension and not the brakes. i have personally inspected the components mentioned above as i have mopar experience in the past as a technician. i have also had a second opinion from an independent technician well versed in jeep technology. second; i also have a problem with the oil pressure being erratic when warmed up and either stationary or in motion. i have replaced the oil pressure sending unit and performed mopar diagnostics on the cluster as mentioned in the shop manual to no avail on this 4.0l engine with automatic transmission.the gauge reads well when cold but when warmed up it will drop to zero with the gauge alarm warning me of the action. then moving erratically between the 40lb marker and zero pressure while in motion or stationary. i and a few technicians are having difficulty determining where the problem is generated. on a note, there is a slight consistent ticking noise such as a valve lifter or rocker arm coming from the engine, warm or cold, stationary or in motion. it occurred when i purchased the vehicle and is still occurring today. thank you for any consideration that you may provide to me as this is my only means of transportation and i am handicapped. Takata air bag and fuel tank explosion on impact. as of the date of this report, i did not received any document from chrysler concerning theses 2 safety issue with my jeep. we are located in south florida. i've call some chrysler dealer in my area, and they say that there are no recall for my car concerning theses two safety issue. nothing has happen so far, but i don't want to continue playing the odd that noting will happen to the life of my wife,my children and myself when driving the jeep in florida. i will appreciate receiving any input from the nhtsa in that matter, and also a recall notice from chrysler to fix the two safety issue. the soonest will the best. thank you for addressing my concern. *tr

We could it to the dealer for the n47 recall and it was there for 24 hours and they said it doesn't need a hitch it doesn't need any protection for the fuel tank. i don't understand why and this recall is a waste of my time and the car can still blow up in a rear end crash,

The car will stall with no warning while driving at low and high speeds. i purchased the vehicle 2 months ago. it has 123000 miles on it. it has stalled while driving 45 mph as well as 15 mph. it usually restarts after it has been turned off and put in park. i replaced the fuel filter with no change in it's stalling problem. has been seen by mechanics, no one has an answer. many forums online are filled with similar stories about jeep cherokees stalling while driving. it is very dangerous. there is no recall for this model, i believe there should be before someone gets rear ended on a freeway or other fast moving road. i am unable to drive my vehicle because of this problem. this has happened at least 10 times. twice i have required a tow because the car would not start back up within a half hour.

Blows cold air on passenger side when heat is on and my windows continuously fog up in the cold. vehicle was like this when i purchased it was used. finding it there are thousand and thousands of people with this issue our forums are everywhere!

I have read that !any people have the same driver's seat issue. the holes for the bolts has been shredded completely and the dealership tried to charge $3,500 to repair it. it's a defect that should be fixed for free. it under the seat, how can the owner destroy that. 2) the head light covers gets this discoloration or grime on the inside decreasing the brightness by 45% at night, this didn't happen in my bronco. i called chrysler and they said the recall # listed online didn't match the format of the numbers in their system to do research. what? this is ridiculous, fix your recalls chrysler!!!

Chrysler jeep was suppose to fix my 2000 jeep grand cherokee they are refusing to fix the jeep that is already on the recall list i call and they said if i put a after market hitch on my vehical that i would be putting myself up to get killed in a low speed car crash. they told me not to put a hitch on it that they put a factory hitch on my vehical i took jeep in they refused to do what they said they was going to do and there needs to be some federal liability as jeep already said they were going to do this and the federal government all ready deemed it a death threat

When this vehicle gets up to 60 it shakes very bad until i press the break. i have replaced all the front end suspension parts and it stopped for a few months and has now started again. this is very scary and i am worried about a possible crash.

While driving at speeds around 48 to 51 mph, you can feel the steering wheel start shaking sometimes if you take your foot off the gas petal it will stop but more than not it will go into a violent shake to where one can hardly hang onto the steering wheel. you have to try and get safely to shoulder and stop. then you can drive away but when speeding up to merge back into traffic it does it again. when you just cant take it anymore you exit the freeway just to drive the city streets to where you get the small like shaking in the steering wheel. these past 2 weeks it seems to be happeing more often. i have had some work done as to what my guy thought it could be for it to not be fixed. i also now have the annoying air bag light coming on and beeping while turning any direction corner. i really like the jeep but i only work part time and my fiance passed away 2 years ago before his passing he bought the jeep so i would have a safe vehicle to drive. i do not feel safe driving the jeep but it is the only one i do have now..parts and work done as of february of 2015.....3 tie rod ends replaced 2 lower one upper on passenger side, 2 new tires because i was told that is what was causing it., a rear driver side wheel seal, a valve cover gasket, 2 sets of front brake pads and rotors cosing well over 1300.00. and still have this violent shake. i can not afford to buy a different vehicle so please tell me what to stop the shaking forever.

My airbag light has been lit up on the dash for well over a year now and still beeping loudly at me every few minutes. i want to know why it's my responsibility to pay for this to be fixed at the the price of 450.00 (dealership quote)? there is no reason for why the clock spring should be broken and have to be fixed. i am not the only person complaining of this problem and i want to know why there hasn't been a recall on it? why is the 2000 year being skipped over for this jeep and the recalls of it?

The engine is not cooling correctly when sitting still. the electric fan that keeps the engine from overheating does not come on, whether sitting or running. got stuck on the side of the road trying to get the vehicle cool and had to drive 20 miles per hour in a 45 mile zone and the engine shut down in the middle of the road. the thermostat was changed, but the vehicle continues to overheat, and as previously stated, the electric fan does not come on at all, sitting still or driving.

Two or three times a year the left rear blinker will have to be replaced due to the housing melting the contacts and burning so it stops working. the two back doors will intermittently not unlock with the key remote (very frustrating!) the left back door window will stop going up and down and we are told by the one that repaired it that the wires for all of that is running through the drivers side door hinge from the dash and gets pinched off from being bent! the front end will growl when i make a left turn, i hear a howling from the rear end at speeds of 35 mph and up. when i come to a quick stop and make a sharp turn it sounds and feels like the rear end shifts forward an inch or two. the brakes have always grabbed and jerked like they were warped while coming to a stop. i have owned it for three years and have had to put two water pumps in it. the wiper washers have never worked. the spare tire well use to fill up with water when it rained and one day my husband put a screw in the bottom of the back license plate and it stopped filling up with water! my brand new cd magazine has stopped working and i'm guessing its because of the location of the deck itself. being right over the rear tire well the vibrations have probably wrecked havoc on the players eye. it seems as though over half of the repairs on this jeep have cost us at least $1000.00 each. i could go on for hours and i have receipts for every one of them! now i think i am seeing what looks to be a leak from the plastic gas tank. i want to know why my year of this jeep, 2000, was skipped over from the recalls?

This is just the beginning of my complaints, it will take another 3 or 4 of these forms to touch all of them. while running the heater with the fan going it started smelling like it was burning and then the blower quit running. it turned out to be the blower motor resistor. it had melted to the point of fusing the wires into the plastic which the resistor was made of. it was a fire hazard! the part cost us $270.00 not including labor. in the middle of a huge rainstorm the driver side window quit working and wouldn't go up, upon leaving the dealership and having the window mechanism replaced, the airbag light on the dash started intermittently chiming and has never stopped. the dealership said the clock spring needs to be replaced at $395.00. since i had just had to have the heater core fixed to keep it from dumping all over the carpet, i couldn't afford to fix it or have the a/c compressor clutch which was frozen, replaced either, another $702.00. i have owned this jeep since jan of 2012. beginning with a new motor i have paid for this vehicle 3 times over due to repairs and problems stemming from the factory and the cheap way it was built.

Initial happening driving a safe speed and car completely shuts down. was able to restart and drove to nearest station...which started a series of pcm replacements. i now understand that there are not new pcm's that can be installed. nothing but refurbished ones, so each time i'm getting someone else's problems. maybe not the original one i had but eventually another one comes up...where the car completely shuts off. my understanding is that it is a problem with the 2000 models. my real issue is that why doesn't the car manufacture offer a new pcm to install. now waiting for the next cutoff...have poured too much money into the car to sell. this the 3rd replacement and installed feb. 2015, first one may 2012 , the second one feb. 2014

My rear corner brake lights constantly have issues either in the taillight assembly or the bulb installation connection -- i am still not sure where the issue is really. i will replace the bulb and in 3 months or so my brake light is out on one side then a short time later the other side. i can't tell you how many jeeps i see with at least one brake light being out. also if my lights are on, then both rear brake lights go out. if i turn the lights off, maybe only one brake light will not work. i've had several people tell me when they are behind me that i have no brake lights, which means if they were not paying attention they would have hit me! and as we all know, paying attention is a huge issue today with so many cell phone distractions. i am shocked there is not a recall on the grand cherokee that i can find on my original factory tail lights.

Air bag light illuminates and chimes sporadically. i was told by jeep mechanic, the clock spring needs to be replaced at $370.00. this does not seem to be an isolated incidence.

Although no accident yet, i wanted to say that i have never received any notice from fca about the "customer satisfaction campaign" (because although the gas tank hangs under the rear bumper, year 2000 was not included in the "recall" trailer hitch deal). i bought it new and am still living at the same address. i also wanted to note that another issue with the gc is that the brake and tail lights often stop working. the socket gets scorched and you have to go take it apart, pry the contacts up just right and put aluminum foil under them (google grand cherokee brake lights). that works for a while, then you have to do it again. i've been stopped twice in 6 months for it. sometimes the taillight works but actually goes out when you step on the brake. in any case, having a gas tank prone to exploding when rear ended along with brake light issues is not a good thing. the door locks on the passenger side also cannot be unlocked except from inside the vehicle, while the drivers side have to be locked manually (again, it's all over google. it's called the angry duck for the noise the locks make. i have been waiting for nhtsa to make a other announcement about this - the news was they were going to in a week or so, but that was 3 weeks ago. thanks [xxx] [xxx]@gmail.com information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).” *jb

As i was getting off my vehicle i heard a pop coming from around my seat. i did not know what it was and did not make much of it until the next time i sat on the seat. upon entering and seating on the driver's seat i noticed that the seat was not even as it had been in the day before. i got off the vehicle and the front right corner of the driver's seat had dropped and the seat was leaning down toward this corner. after i inspected under the seat i determined that this was due to the front, right bracket connecting the seat to the track breaking off the track. now the seat is only supported by three brackets. i feel that this should not have happened to my vehicle given its age, mileage and my height and weight. i thick that this potential very unsafe in the event of an accident. *tr

Engine shuts off while driving. very dangerous to shift to neutral, while rolling, and try to restart with key. must come to a complete stop and shift to park to restart. not so bad if you can get to the side of the road first, terrible if you have to stop in the travel lanes to restart car. sometimes it takes up to 30 minutes to get vehicle started again. *tr

Wife was driving home at night,was on a fairly straight section of road. engine quit running with no warning, lights dimmed. a couple seconds later engine restarted, and she came on home. have not tried to drive it since, been parked in the garage. we have owned this vehicle since new, leased at first, then bought it. concerned about this, having heard of engines shutting off in other vehicles causing crashes and death or injury. we have not taken the vehicle to be checked yet. *tr

Bought this automobile used. a couple of days later we noticed the drivers seat track had separated in two places on each side of the seat. the seat was literally being held to the track with bailing wire that the previous owner had rigged. we removed the wire and used a cushion spring to hold the seat to the track. note: the metal brackets on both sides of the seat had simply fatigued and split in two. i called our local jeep/chrysler dealer and he gave me the national number for jeep customer service. after speaking with the rep, nothing could be done since there had not been a recall notice on this item. i checked the internet and found that this was a common complaint for this year of grand cherokee. i feel very strongly that this condition is very dangerous and chrysler/jeep should recall the drivers side seat track for these years (1999-2004) grand cherokee. *tr

Gas tank shield has rusted out and pieces are missing, this should be recalled for a safety hazard that the gas tank can be exposed and punctured being fatal. i brought this to a jeep dealer and they said to call chrysler corp. they did not take photos. the doors in side are rusted. all years are being recalled for this issue of the shield but not my year. do you have to wait until someone dies to recall these unsafe vehicle's?!! jeeps are very expensive and i feel that mine should be fixed asap by the company. *tr

Engine started stalling without any warning while driving at any speed, first occurrence was at about 35mph. lost power steering, brakes on a sharp curve! dealer found ecm (engine control module or computer bad). that happened the first time in 2010. it has happened again in 6/2013 and now again in 3/2014 except the one of the last two times the car jerked and wouldn't accelerate as we started to pass someone on a 2-lane road. the jeep jerked, immediately started slowing and then the engine died causing loss of powersteering and power brakes and almost being hit from behind as we were not quite clear of the car we were passing and had no choice but to slow and move back into line behind the slower car ahead of us, as the engine died and two other cars were passing the slower car from behind us almost ran into us!!! then we got the car started, drove about another 3 miles to a business, as we were on a rural road at the time of the incident. the car would die (twice more) and not go over 59 mph or 2600 engine rpm. the dealer and our shop manager says "this is a habitual problem with a lot of chrysler products...they have poorly made engine control modules, the worst in the auto industry"! the shop manager says "it's a real safety issue that isn't being addressed anywhere!" *tr

I can't put gas in the tank unless it is at the very slightest flow or it just shuts off and sometimes spews gas back out at me. i have been soaked with gasoline more than once. i can't even put it on the lowest setting on the handle. i saw the recalls and called the dealer who said that they know that this is a manufacturers defect but they won't do anything because my vin isn't in the recall. this is obviously a fire hazard and i can't believe we can't get this fixed. *tr

Driver's seat became loose and wobbly, eventually "clicking" while driving, and then obviously broke and i was reclined back and to the right. seat removal found that driver's seat frame had cracked and failed. professional welder repaired seat frame and strengthened frame with additional material. three years later, seat frame is failing again. i am not overweight or obese - this seat frame is dangerous, especially if it breaks while driving. a search on the internet indicates a widespread problem with these seat frames, including a repair kit website since chrysler is not taking care of this issue. it is my opinion that under regular duty, a seat frame should last the lifetime of the vehicle. *tr

Blower motor resistor heated up to the point that there was smoke coming from under the passenger side glove compartment. after further investigation it was discovered that the wires and the resistor had both been charred and melted. not only do i no longer have any heat or a/c but i also no longer have a window defroster and this poses a serious safety issue to myself, any passengers i may have and as well to other drivers on the road. not to mention the fire that was only barely thwarted off.

Vehicle was noted with stop light activated in parked position. investigation showed fail brake switch adjacent to brake pedal. purchased napa replacement part . installed replacement switch did not fully seat into metal pocket on support bracket. replaced with jeep/chrysler dealer replacement switch with same condition. unit will be pushed out of metal bracket from quick release of brake pedal. concern is excessive heat generated by continual rear brake light activation. potential for fire hazard. i am faa certified for flight safety systems on aircraft. this inadequately secured switch would not be allowed for aircraft due to hazardous potential failure mode. switch design was made for quick assembly but inadequate securing to vehicle bracket support.

Have been noticing vibration of the radiator cooling fan when a/c turned on. while backing out of drive, heard pop noise from engine compartment. pulled into drive, opened hood and found that radiator fan had disintegrated, piercing radiator shroud and radiator. holes in radiator (radiator now leaking) and shroud. called chrysler recall center and told that this was not covered by recall 06v199000. am replacing all affected parts and performing service myself. based on online research this is very common problem with this model and should be included under above mentioned recall. *tr

Driver's seat front outboard attach point failed during normal use. the failure was in the frame of the seat base where it attaches to the seat adjustment track. this is a manual adjust seat. i am original owner and of average build. vehicle has never been involved in a collision, abused in any way, and has been maintained in excellent condition. i conducted my own informal investigation. the seat base frame where it attaches to the seat track is a light weight sheet metal stamping. the holes in the stamping that accept the seat track attachment studs are significantly oversize compared with the size of the stud. the seat track stud is fastened to the seat base with a bare nut that is only slightly larger than the hole diameter. this results in the nut bearing down on a very small surface area of the sheet metal. high stress is created at these points, especially if the nut is not exactly centered on the oversize hole. also, the front attach points are several inches to the rear of the front edge of the seat frame, further increasing forces on these points for any rearward force on the upper seat back. over time during normal use, this resulted in stress cracking and subsequent fatigue failure of the sheet metal. during a high impact event such as a rear-end collision, this could cause sudden failure of the seat attach points, resulting in loss of control of the vehicle, injury to the front seat occupant, and injury to anyone seated in the rear seat behind the front seat occupant. a simple flat washer or other reinforcement of the holes in the seat base sheet metal could prevent this mode of failure. i recommend that any vehicle equipped with seats of this design have the seats inspected for cracks in the sheet metal base, repaired or replaced if necessary, and have the seat attachment points reinforced with heavy washers. *tr

The power in doors windows works off and on. there will be no point to lock your door and then you can't unlock the door. the windows sometimes roll down and times they don't. the lighting on the inside of the car comes off and on without being turned on. happened on its own anytime the car is started and can't be turned off at times. the dash lights don't work sometimes blinkers work off and on any electrical in the inside of jeep is messed up. *jb

The in-dash heater/ac blend door is malfunctioning causing air flow not to be properly diverted between lower dash vents, dashboard vents and defroster vents. this is creating an unsafe condition whereby the windshield will not clear in rainstorms and will not stay defrosted in winter driving. a search on the internet and along with discussions with a local dealer working with jeeps for many years has led me to understand that this is a long-known and very common defect with jeep grand cherokees. prices to replace this blend door have ranged from $1000 to $1500 due to the fact that this is a very labor intensive replacement. i contact chrysler assistance and they suggested that i contact you to identify this safety concern so that perhaps a technical service bulletin (tsb) could be issued and chrysler would address the defective blend door for consumers experiencing this safety issue. *js

As i was pulling out of my driveway on the morning of tuesday, june 5 and heard a loud clicking sound coupled with a sticking in my steering wheel as i turned it to the right. as i continued to my drive, i noticed the clicking and sticking almost every time i turned the steering wheel to the right (even on slight motions like when parallel parking). i took the car to the mechanic for fear the steering would stick and i would ram into something or someone. he told me everything seemed fine on the outside (no signs of the typical wear and tear or any of the common leakage problems). however, he said this was a serious problem and the vehicle should not be driven. after careful inspection he found the interior of the gearbox cracked. when he looked up the parts he saw that the 2000 and 2001 steering gear had been recalled and instructed me to talk to my local jeep dealer (my local dealer is the figueroa location in downtown los angeles). when i spoke with them, they informed me my car was not under the recall parameters as it was manufactured in december 1999. however, i would like to note that this problem seems far more reaching than the small parameters of the dates of the recalls. the same part (#52088272ad) has caused the same hazardous and costly problem (sticking/binding/seizing) over a span of two years of jeeps, 2000 and 2001. this same part was used in jeeps in subsequent years as well. *js

The driver's seat bracket or mount is broken and the seat is set facing slightly toward the left pillar. in investigating this situation we found that bracket failure is a very common occurrence for this model. this is a hazardous condition and warrants a recall due to its frequency. this is my wife's vehicle and she is unsure about when the failure first occurred. *tr

The bracket under the seat snapped in a few different places, it looks like it was bad welding. i found online that many people had the same problem. i have tried to weld it back into place, but it only breaks again and again. it makes my seat very uncomfortable and it used to squeak, but i found a way to fix the squeak on my own. the whole seat moves forward because the back is not attached at all, very unsafe. *tr

I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo 4x4. about a year or more ago, my front driver's seat began to "wobble"... it was only a very minuscule amount at first, but has gradually increased in severity and is now a completely broken seat. the left side of the driver's seat can completely be lifted up on its side and is fully detachable. the brackets and seat mount under the seat have broken completely and the metal is snapped. this is a very serious problem as the driver seat may completely detach sporadically during operation. visiting a body shop at the beginning of 2010 i was told that replacing the seat would cost at least $500.00 and that the most cost efficient method would be to consider a replacement seat from the junk yard. as i began searching around for seats, i began to notice a very strange pattern: all the jeep's with my make and model from about 1999 to at least 2003 or 2004 had their front seats already missing within a matter of days upon their initial arrival to the junk yard. it was almost impossible to find a driver's seat that would fit my make and model because others around the country were. confronted with this irony, i began to search online for remedies to my issue and to see if other consumers had faced similar problems with their jeeps. i was astonished and deeply disturbed to find their was a web page filled with comments from other consumers experiencing the same exact issue with the driver's seat and in some cases, the driver's seat had detached during vehicular operation (for example, while making right turns). these comments dated back to 2007 and majority of them, if not all, dealt with jeep grand cherokee laredos from the year 2000. this is a major problem and there is a proven track record of this seat defect. the number of cases is too large to be irony. please advocate for a recall on behalf of consumers who are facing this.

Seat brackets under driver seat have broken, which causes seat to move when going around bends, getting in and out of seat. the way the bracket has broken, the seat can physically be lifted up off the floor. we removed the seat, there is only 1 of the 4 brackets not broken, so if the last one would break the seat could tip over or fall backwards or forwards. if you would go around a bend, you would either hit up against the door or against the console depending on which direction you turn. if you would have to slam on the brakes the seat would fly forward into the steering wheel. we have fixed the seat once by rewelding the brackets, and they broke again, so we now have completely replaced the seat with a seat from a different jeep. after the initial repair, it took about a year for it to break again. *tr

In 2007, my rear tail lights stopped working. they would not work if the head lights were turned on. however if the head lights were off the rear tail lights were working. there is no warning light that informs you of this failure and so it was not until i was stopped by the police that i was even aware of the problem. i got the rear lights replaced, not knowing then that this was a common problem. however, now three years later, the lights have failed again. same exact problem. no warning lights, it just so happened a family member saw that my lights were out. the replacement parts are expensive and obviously this is a common problem known by jeep/chrysler.

My 2000 jeep grand cherokee with 90,000 miles has had problems with defrosting and heating for the past year. when it is cold or rainy the windshield will not clear not matter what settings i use. i get snow and ice accumulating on my foggy windshield and i am forced to pull over in dangers conditions and scrap my windows. recently my heat has stopped working on the drivers side and i looked for information online and found numerous forums with thousands of people having the same problems with their jeep grand cherokees. people have complained for years to the dealership and daimler chrysler only to be told it was a comfort issue not a safety issue. it is s serious safety issue and i feel this needs to be looked into before someone does get hurt or worse. they are aware of the problem and the dealerships are willing to charge thousands of dollars to 'fix' problems but it should be recalled because they never fix the problem and customers are taking unnecessary risks to drive their suv's (sports utility vehicles, ironically) without heat, defrost and/or cooling. please take this complaint seriously and look and see how many other similar complaints you have gotten on the same issues with these cars. i can not afford to buy a new car and i do not want to out myself and my family as well as others at risk because one company is not responsible enough to fix such a blatant safety issue. thank you *tr

All 1999-2002 grand cherokee wj models built through may 10, 2002 came equipped with brake calipers made by teves. they are black in color with an open-sided bracket design. due to poor caliper centering, the teves calipers caused the rotors to warp, a problem that has plagued grand cherokees. at the very end of the 2002 model year, jeep changed to "fully-closed" style calipers designed by akebono. to address the warped rotor problem jeep issued a tsb, #05-003-02. we believe it should be a full recall do to the major wheel shake to the point of the driver almost loosing control of the suv do to this vibration. jeep has long known about this issue & was sued in a class action law suit which they settled the problem is excessive rotor thickness variation generated by poor caliper centering. this causes steering wheel shake. grand cherokee brakes up through may 10th 2002 were designed by teves. same brakes used on bmw & ford expedition but the grand cherokee was the first to use a twin piston caliper design. chrysler wanted twin pistons because of the weight of the vehicle. the caliper spring causes the inboard pad to drag. it takes a lot of heat (cherry red) to warp rotors, so the main cause of rotor variation is not heat but uneven wear. *tr

A few months ago i noticed the drivers seat of my 2000 grand cherokee began to make popping noises when i would turn corners or accelerate. just the other day when i accelerated from a stop, there was a loud pop and my drivers seat turned into a rocking chair. it tipped all the way back to the back seat nearly causing me to loose control and crash into the car in front of me. i took my jeep into the dealership and they quoted me a price of more than a thousand dollars to replace the seat bracket. i then did some research on the internet and found that there are hundreds of others that have the same problem. there is definitely a safety problem and why is there not a recall? does it take people being killed to get something done? i can not afford to put over a thousand dollars into my jeep at this time and others have had the seats welded but the welds do not hold. *tr

2000 jeep grand cherokee rear brake lights out because of defective design. brake lights stop working when headlights turned on. brake lights work fine when headlights off. problem design is in the tail light assembly. when you remove the light socket for the tail/brake light in the light assembly, you will see 3 silver contact points inside the black plastic ring. two are grouped together and there is one that is opposite of the two. the one by itself is the ground; the other two are the contacts for the tail light and brake light. the problem lies with the ground connector. you should notice that the ground contact is depressed into the plastic and the plastic itself is slightly warped down. most cars have light sockets with their wiring attached. the socket twists into the lamp assembly. on the grand cherokee, the socket does not have the wiring attached. instead, the wiring goes into the lamp assembly and the socket has three electrical contacts that, when twisted into the assembly, will make the contact. what seems to be the most frequent malfunction is that the electrical contacts (which make contact with their respective electrical paths when they are inserted into the assembly) are pressed tight to ensure good contact with the assembly...and on many taillights, the plastic ring containing the respective paths often begins to separate from the fatigue of the contacts pressing so hard. of the three contacts (rear tail light, rear brake light and ground), the ground is what most commonly loses its contact due to fatigue cracking. this is a serious safety issue because often drivers are unaware that there is a problem. it only happens when the headlamps are on, so if checked in daylight, the problem often goes undetected. only when another driver or the police point it out does it looked at. this is a widespread problem that occurs for nearly every 2000 jeep grand cherokee. it is not an issue of will it happen, rather when is it going to happen! *tr

My wife and i purchased a 2000 jeep grand cherokee from the dealership. about two years ago the 4.0 liter 6 cylinder engine started using coolant and causing the coolant light to alarm. the oil pressure would drop to "0" and sound the check gauges alarm. we took the car to the mechanic shop for costly repairs and troubleshooting. they replaced the water pump, couldn't find any leaks, and replaced the oil pump and rear main seal. they checked the bearing clearances and found them within tolerance. the car is still using one to two pints of coolant every three days and the oil continues to drop to "0" after warm-up. we replace the 4 wheel disc brakes and rotors every two years. the hood gas shocks won't hold the hood up and the shocks cost $150 a pair form the dealer and only last one year. we to have electric door locks that screech and don't lock the doors as well as rear light problems that work off and on. the emissions are much higher than normal on our recent smog test. this is an indication that the #3 and 4 cylinder is using the mysterious antifreeze loss. as a retired mechanical engineer i also believe the oil problem to be related. my wife has the grand cherokee and i purchased a tj wrangler new in 2000. i'm concerned this vehicle will develop the same problems having the same engine. we have invested over $50 thousand in these two cars. we need your help to help us offset this burden. *tr

The engine shuts down and the electrical system to start the car is shutdown while driving. i have had this happen to me numerous times and have not been able to find the resolution to it. it's a tremendous safety concern because it has happened to me while driving on several highways. the car attempts to turn over while trying to start it however none of the gauges are responding to the key in the ignition during turn over. i have read numerous forums with many people with the same problem. changes have been made to everything from sensor's to pcm ( main computer ) to resolve the problem. in my case the computer system isn't storing any codes with a problem. initially i changed the crank shaft position sensor because of the code but the problem continues to happen. to make matters worse because the entire system is shut down there is no power steering making it almost impossible to glide over to the shoulder. *tr

I own a 2000 jeep grand cherokee. my wife was picking up my kids, when the car began to shake and then overheated. i took my car the mechanic, who told me that the radiator fan was defective and had to be replaced. he told me that this was a common problem with the grand cherokee. i looked at your website, and discovered that there was a recall on this part, but only for certain vin numbers. i paid $735 dollars to replace the defective part, and chrysler/jeep said they will not reimburse me because of my vin number. they told me to contact the nhtsa to find out why my jeep wasn't covered, since they had no other information for me. i know that the grand cherokee from 1999 to 2004 has the same exact parts and body and i don't understand why my jeep isn't covered under the recall when this is a known problem. *tr

Jeep 2000 grand cherokee laredo inline 6cyl i recently experienced low coolant and oil pressure problems. i had the water pump replaced, the oil sensor switch replaced, and the oil pump replaced. the repairs were done individually in that order. i am still experiencing low coolant although the car does not seem to overheat. i recently had a pressure test and there were no leaks. when the car is started in the morning i have the proper oil pressure. as soon as the car warms up the oil pressure fluctuates and eventually activates the alert indicator (bell sound). the engine sounds fine and there are no performance problems. i brought the car back to the service station that did the repairs. the mechanic suggested that i use a heavier oil for the pressure problem. i will let you know the results. this may be the last attempt before an engine overhaul. jeep should have a recall for these problems. *tr

2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo 6 point adjustable power driver's seat. the brackets on the left side of the power seat adjuster (the brackets that hold the top of the adjuster to the bottom) broke on july 3, 2009 under normal breaking at a traffic light. basically the left side of the seat now just floats around. if the corresponding brackets on the right side go, the seat will be free of the vehicle and i'll be driving from the back. i was willing to write this off as a one off problem, but that's just not the case. this is such a common issue that i'm unable to find a replacement from a salvage yard. the dealer wants $800 to replace the assembly (the entire assembly must be replaced as it's not available in its individual components) which just is not possible at this point. this is a serious safety issue. if the seat were to completely break away at 75 mph (interstate speed where i am), imagine the catastrophic event that would occur. i've gotten a hold of a used 10 point adjustable driver's seat from a 2001 jeep grand cherokee and am hoping i can make it work, but at this point, the issue is not resolved. if the one from the 2001 jeep can't be made to work, i may be forced to convert it to a manual seat as the brackets for a manual seat are affordable new. *tr

I bought the car in september 2007..in november i was on the highway and suddenly the car started to overheat had to get it towed to the nearest auto shop where they said the radiator was damaged and had to be changed...couple days later the fan stopped working which also had to be changed. after all the over heating the mechanic told me the engine burned out and also had to be replaced after the fact my car wouldnt start. had the truck working for a while until april 2008 where my transmission started failing. i kept hearing a clicking noise and the truck wouldnt accelerate as fast it should have been. had the transmission replaced at cottman transmission. after all this had happened the engine light came on and i couldnt get my inspection done, turned out to be a hose causing air to be released. it is now january 2009 and my truck has leaked out all its antifreeze once again its over heating. all in all since september 2007 i have spent over $3500-$4000 on this truck. still making payments on the truck from college hill auto in pennsylvania. *tr

Have owned vehicle for 4 years now. have had problems with the heat not working 3 times now and still have problems (spent over $1,000.00 in this alone) the wires connecting to the blow box get to hot and melt the plug & blow box. when it first starts you can wiggle the wires and it will work for a short period of time. ultimately you must replace the plug & blow box. last week i was pulled over getting off the express way and a guy stopped me and told me i had no tail lights or brake lights. again this was another electrical problem. this was very dangerous as i could have been in a serious accident. the tail gate sticks and will not open. *tr

Both tail light assemblies stopped working and was cited by a police officer. replacement was ~$500. rear lift gate lock actuator is broken, so cannot open lift gate. right rear door lock will not allow opening from inside. shift sensor/solenoid has gone bad twice leading to problems with shifting from gears (revs really high before shifting). rotors are constantly becoming warped and brakes have to be readjusted. left blinker no longer works and to fix it, the dealership told me they have to replace this entire engine block for about $800. power window lock no longer works. other than that, car runs great :). *tr

My driver's seat on my 2000 jeep grand cherokee has broke. the metal track underneath has sheared off in several spots and the hinge to recline the seat also has began tearing. the broken metal makes it possible for the seat on my jeep to slide from side to side and to also slide forward and back. the broken metal on the hinge also digs into my side and i have to cover it with a leather glove to keep it from drawing blood. more importantly though is the fact that the seat moves and is not safe when driving, even if just driving on a city street, because it is not secure and you never know when it is going to give out and shift, causing you to stop paying attention to the road so that you can try to fix the problems with you seat. i really think that this should be repaired as i have seen many people having similar problems. in fact, in order to keep the seat from sliding back into the rear seat, i have installed my own safety features - i have place a cooler in the rear seat and the head of a sledgehammer underneath the seat to support the seat and to keep it from sliding back any further. i find this to work well as far as keeping my seat from moving, however it should not come to this. *tr

My 2000 jeep cherokee's electric fan broke and cut into the radiator. i did a search for recalls and there is a recall for this fan, but here is the real problem: the coolant fan relay switch module fails and the fan doesn't properly cool the engine, then the poorly designed head cracks between the #3 and #4 head and all the coolant seeps into the cylinder area where the coolant is burned. then without proper cooling, it destroys the engine. Failure of blend doors in heater/defogger of vehicle. jeep has known about these cheap parts for some time. the repair costs over $1000 because it is labor intensive, the complete dash panel has to be removed to access where the blend doors are located. the part costs are only about $150 at most! with the failure comes no warm/hot air from the heater, consequently no defrosting of the windshield.........a severe visibility problem!! jeep/chrysler should be picking up all, or at least most of the cost of this repair. the original parts were cheaply made and are subject to wear out within only a few years. i recently had to pay for this repair myself. i could not do without the defroster during winter months. i had to pay for it out of my own pocket. i would like to see jeep/chrysler refund some of that cost to me, it would only be fair. do a search on the internet, and you will see the numbers of these same failures for several jeep year models. *tr

I have been experiencing a problem with my battery not staying charged. the first occurred when i had let the car set for about 2 days, it would not start. *tr the battery would not jump. i had to buy a new battery. the battery post always get corrosion on it. i have had it cleaned and changed a couple of times, and it still gets corrosion on it in 2 days. i was told about two years ago that it could be the wires that run from one of the post to the engine. this time, my new battery only lasted about 3 months. same problem. the dealer told me that i would have to buy a new battery. it appears that something is draining my battery, but no one can find out what. i had to get a new battery, but i am afraid that it will get drained also.

Automatic climate control system acts erratically. regardless of what settings are used, hot air will blow out one side while cold blows out the other. sometimes which side is cold or hot will switch. i am filing this with the nhtsa because this is a major safety hazard. because my automatic climate control doesn't work correctly, i have no windshield defroster. we have been receiving a lot of rain lately and the temperatures have been dropping. my windshield keeps getting foggy and i can't clear it. i have to pull over and wipe it off with a towel just to have it fog up again a few minutes later while i'm trying to drive. in the winter, the windshield will freeze over and it is very difficult to keep clear visibility. i can deal with being uncomfortable, but no defroster is a major problem. i have taken the vehicle into a dealership and have been told the cost of repair will be at least $1200. after researching online, it appears this is a very common problem. my fathers 99' jeep grand cherokee had the same problem. jeep has identified a design flaw and has replacement parts, but they will not fix the problem under warranty unless the vehicle is still in warranty. this is a major design flaw and a major safety issue. jeep didn't have a fix for this until the jeep was well out of warranty. i put today's date as the incident date, but this has been happening for the past year. it is considerably worse now and the vehicle will be unsafe to drive this winter. *tr

While driving home using the a/c i smelled an odor of burning plastic. i pulled to the shoulder of the road to investigate and noticed small amounts of smoke coming from under the passenger side dash board. with the ignition off i felt around behind and below the glove compartment and was burnt by melted plastic from a small black component (the blower control module as i found out later). the wires to the module were very hot, the connector had melted, and after letting it cool, the a/c blower would not work. i have discovered that jeep knows about this problem, has made repair kits available but will not fix the problem or cover costs, the module costs about $165, the wiring repair kit costs about $20, the labor $80. the safety issue is obvious, with burning plastic, fire, smoke, fumes, and possible accident if this got out of control while driving. health affects from the smoke fumes are indeterminate as of now. i have purchased parts to make the repairs, as well as a pyrometer to monitor wire and module temperature. *tr

3 of my doors have to be either manually locked or unlocked. the keyless function no longer works correctly for them. both passenger doors do not unlock with the keyless/electronic fob, the drivers door does not lock with the keyless/electronic fob, only manually. anytime the keyless/electronic fob is used a nasty grinding noise comes from 1 or more of the doors. *tr

Bought the 2000 jeep grand cherokee ltd back in december of 2007. the a/c worked great. moved to miami, fl on 01/08 , and had to start using a/c alot. while learning the vehicles habits. i noted the a/c unit to stop working when on. the unit would be on, and then go out, and come back on. like there was a short somewhere. i also smelt a burning smell in the cab. i stopped turning on a/c unit all together at my grandfathers request until i moved back to nc on 07/08. when he looked at the a/c components; he noted that the "blower motor resistor" (located under passenger side glove box, and beside the blower unit )was melted so bad that the wires at the 3 pron female connector was frayed/expose (where heat melted/shrunk connectors away from wires) leaving hot wires touching one another. this in return caused wire exposure. the "blower motor resistor" unit ended up melting so bad it was warped. this part also never once blew the 40amp fuse under hood for the a/c unit.... or anywhere else for that matter. i am really upset that my vehicle could have caught on fire due to live wires/melting parts/ lack of fuse blowing. this is a 125$ part minus dealership repair. part related to cherokee "limited"dual climate functions of the a/c dash unit (air position knob, automatic digital temp display,and air flow fan knob). the part is removed which means to cut wires to detach the part. this means the new part will have to be rewired back in. jeep should have to replace all of the unit wires, and plastic connectors, and find a way to control the melt down! part unfixed due to lack of money to repair....! no a/c is better than a burnt car. I own a 2000 jeep grand cherokee limited. the events leading up to the failure of the ventilation system were (1) rapid fogging of front windshield,(2) fogging of front passenger windows,(3) failure of passenger heat while still maintaining driver heat function, and (4) only cold air release on passenger side of jeep. consequently,(1) the windshield and front windows do not defog, and (2) no heat whatsoever comes from the passenger side floor and dashboard ventilation system. to correct this problem, a "blend air door" is necessary at a cost of approximately $1,400. according to the certified service department at the local jeep dealer and online forums, this has become a very common problem for 2000-2004 jeep grand cherokee limited's with dual zone ventilation systems. given the mileage of the vehicle at the time of 110,000, i thought it a reasonable failure. later i found out this is a very common failure. 14 months later, the heater began having problems again and seemed not to respond to the controls. the shop says it is the "blend doors" again! i told them they were replaced 14 months earlier and they replied it was a common problem and it seems every service coordinator at this particular dealership had a set of bad blend doors under their desk to show people what the problem is! if this is so common, it seems that chrysler should be doing something about it! 14 months expected lifetime?? $3k in 14 months just to get a heater working? too much! something must be done!! *tr

This past winter ('07-'08), the rear driver and front passenger automatic door locks on my 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo began to make a loud quacking noise upon locking and unlocking. also i recently discovered that these two doors must be manually locked as they no longer lock upon automatic locking with the remote or with the master control on the driver door. *tr

Within 2 weeks both rear brake/tail lights stopped working. after checking all fuses and bulbs the it was found to be a faulty ground contact within the light housing due to poor design. the dealership replaced both fixtures at my expense since there has not been a recall. after it happened a second time 2 weeks later i searched the internet finding a repair message board www.carsurvey.org/viewmorecomments_review_33943_11.html that assisted me in identifying the problem and fixing it permanently. at the end is the procedure identified on the website.feeling that this is a safety issue (driving and fire hazard) i am reporting it to assist others to fix the situation and making dodge/jeep liable for repairs. 1remove the tail light assembly. most of you know how to remove the light assembly if you've changed bulbs, so i won't cover that. 2disconnect the wiring harness by sliding the red locking clip to the side in order to press the side of the male connector and pull apart. 3. once you've got the tail assembly away from the vehicle and on a bench, remove the light socket for the tail/brake light. you will see 3 silver contact points inside the black plastic ring. 2 are grouped together and there is one that is opposite of the 2. the one by itself is the ground; the other two are the contacts for the tail light and brake light. the problem lies with the ground connector. 4 clean all contacts with a q-tip and some sort of contact cleaner. 5. you should notice that the ground contact is depressed into the plastic and the plastic itself is slightly warped down. i was able to use a small pair of needle nose pliers that have a 45 degree angle to press up on the contact from underneath using the opposite lip of the hole as leverage (very carefully).once it had moved up a bit, i was able to wedge a mini-flathead screwdriver in between the metal contact and the plastic to force the contact up even further. once it looked even with the rest, gently reinsert the connector and test. *tr

My ac fan had been cutting on and off randomly in my 2000 jeep grand cherokee. i thought at first it may be a bad climate control control panel. a few days later, i smelled electrical burning smell in my car and the fan would not come on at all. today i removed the blower fan, thinking it was bad, but it turns out the blower is fine, the blower control module relay and wiring harness had melted in the dashboard above where the passengers feet would rest. i have taken pictures and will be glad to send them upon request, but i think jeep/chrysler should have to replace this due to the potential fire threat and lack of safety (since the fuse did not blow). i attempted to replace the part through an automotive parts company, but the blower control module will need to be purchased straight from chrysler corp. please call me or email me with any follow up questions you may have. once again, i will also send pictures upon request. thanks! *tr

The resistor that allowed the blower motor to work the air conditioner /heater melted the wiring harness and the resistor itself, which at anytime could cause a fire on the passenger's side of the vehicle. this meant there was no air conditioning or heat for the automobile nor defroster system. the company was on a back order from what i was told by 1400 parts. the junk yards did not have this resistor, and after $180 at napa i was able to get one, and that was hard to find ,and i didn't know how long this one will last. after receiving the part the box contained a harness and resistor, the harness had about 10 plugging to where i believe i will have to tear the whole dashboard apart just to connect this harness. i believe this should be a recall for a fire hazard. and tell me why chrysler isn't selling this part.*ak

Noticed truck running hot when sitting idle. took vehicle to dealership, and they advised him of a faulty cooling fan module. replaced cooling fan module, and one month later truck ran hot again and was leaking. truck cut off while driving. truck did not fall under current recall for cooling fan modules. would like to request a full refund from manufacturer. *ak

At the time i was experiencing problems from warped rotors which caused car and steering wheel to shake violently especially when exiting off freeway. my engine light would come on intermittently. i was told "the tech could not verify at this time. tech turned off light". car was under warranty, 17,747 miles and two years old. five years later, 58,968 miles and no warranty i have engine light on and told," torque converter faulty requires transmission removal after running system scan". *jb

I purchased a 2000 jeep grand cherokee in 2005 from a used car dealer in albuquerque. at that time no recalls or repairs of any safety related defects were revealed to me. i received a recall in novenber 2006 for cooling fan that i had already had done . daimler/chrysler reimbursed me for some of the repairs done. on 4-17-07 i was north bound on unser approaching ladera, traffic was stopped at the red light. i was traveling the speed limit which was posted at 35 mph. i pressed on the brake pedal to begin slowing down and nothing happened. i then slammed my foot down on the pedal it went to the floor and i rear ended a large pickup at the intersection. the air bags did not deploy, and i did not think the seat belt engaged untill i hit the steering wheel with my sternum. my injuries were minor, and i elt the injuries of the person i hit were also minor. the reason i believed thiswas so because i was knocked unconsicience. after some advice from an attourney i checked online for any safty related recalls on the vehicle. i was not surprised to find many. recall # 200002004 was a seat belt recall, recall # 20060313 was a brake system recall, and recall # 19991202 was a air bag recall. there were many more i am sure you were aware off. my concern was for anybody else thatwas driving one of these vehicles with their families in the car. if my wife or daughter had been in the vehicle with me i am sure their injuries would have been more severe. please look into this vehicle, it was not safe. *ak

I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee. since july 2004, there has been problems with the power door lock solenoids, one after the other. as of this reporting, i have had to have all the power lock solenoids replaced, including the back hatch which was replaced the monday prior to this writing. the problems started with the rear door solenoids, left door first, then the right. problems were significant enough with the rear doors that they could not be opened from the outside after they failed - only from the inside by manually unlocking the door (the outside does not have a key slot). i have incurred almost $2,000 in repair costs over the last 30 months replacing the mechanisms. the same repair shop replaced all five units, and all five replacements are currently functioning. they furnished me this website to contact due to the trouble that i have seen.*ak

I own a 2000 jeep grand cherokee limited with 116,000 miles. the events leading up to the failure of the ventilation system were (1) rapid fogging of front windshield, (2) no defrost on passenger side of windshield, (3) fogging of front passenger windows and windshield,(4) failure of passenger heat while still maintaining driver heat function, and (5) only cold air release on passenger side of jeep. consequently the windsheild and front windows do not defog, and no heat is provided from the passenger side floor and dashboard ventilation system. to correct this problem, a blend door assembly is required at a cost of approximately $1,350 inclusive of 8 hours of labor. according to the certified service department at the local jeep dealer and online forums, this has become a very common problem for 1999-2004 jeep grand cherokees.

I have a 2000 grand cherokee jeep limited that i purchased new. it was fairly ok until 2003 at about 60k miles. that's when the radiator starting leaking. it was replaced in 2003 and annually thereafter (5 replacements) with the last one in march 2007. additionally, i have had several water pumps plus replacing the heater core. the dealer says they can't find the cause for the radiators to continue to breakdown every year with less than 10k and under 12 months each time. i believe the jeep has an inherent flaw in the cooling system design. chrysler continues to ignore the problem and will not pay for any future radiators which almost assuredly will breakdown again in the near future. *jb

My ventilation system is in the process of failing. i have a loud creating sound coming from underside my dash. when i turn on the system, it doesn't always heat/cool the way it is supposed to. sometimes the heat comes on, sometimes the cool comes on when the other is chosen. sometimes if it's supposed to be on the floor its on the defroster. also, the drivers side seat heater acts up but mostly it doesn't work.

9/12/06 - had electric fan motor assembly replaced while traveling by mcgee tire stores in tallahassee, fl for $535. 9/15/06 - received recall notice f25 from daimler chrysler for same as repair. 01/02/07 - inspected by dayton andrews daimler chrysler to verify work was completed. sent original repair receipt, dayton andrews letter and recall notice with letter to daimler chrysler requesting reimbursement for repairs. 01/16/06 - received a call from "randi" at daimler chrysler stating that she revieved our paperwork and determined we were not entitled to reimbursement because we chose not to have jeep perform the work. she refused to let me speak with her supervisor and stated that she was "empowered by daimler chrysler to make this decision not to reimburse." the receipt of the recall notice occurred directly following us having to have this work done while traveling to tallahassee, several hundred miles from home and stranded without a working vehicle. while we were having this work performed, we were unaware of this recall as we had not yet received the notification. how do we appeal to daimler chrysler to reconsider this claim? i have soft copies of all documents, in case "randi" chooses not to return my original documents, which i can produce upon request. thank you for your help.

My fan module in my 2000 jeep grand cherokee which is not currently under recall (due to the engine size) came apart while vehicle was on, causing damage to the radiator and other parts in the engine. *nm

Tl*- the contact has a 2000 jeep grand cherokee with an odometer reading of 60000 miles. the contact stated that she received recall notice (98v095000) engine and engine cooling:cooling system:fan after she had the failure repaired. the contact submitted her information to the manufacturer to be reimbursed. the manufacturer declined to pay the reimbursement because they claim that it was not for the same repair. the contact has the repair order from the mechanic who fixed the vehicle which stated the work that was done which coincided with the recall notice failure.

Due to pulsing of the brake pedal and vibration in the steering wheel the dealer turned the rotors and replaced the pads around 20,000 miles (we paid the bill). the rotors and pads were replaced again around 40,000 miles by an independent mechanic. on a trip to the store the right front caliper would not totally release pulling hard to the right and heating the rotor / pads to the point of smoking. the right front aluminum wheel rim was too hot to touch; the caliper and rotor were replaced which remedied the problem. *jb

Tl* - the contact owns a 2000 jeep grand cherokee that was involved in nhtsa recall campaign id number: 06v199000. concerning engine cooling system. on 10/16/06 contact called a local dealership, and they stated that they didn't have the parts, and it could not make the repairs until after 1/1/07. on 01/03/06, the contact noticed coolant leaking under the vehicle. the contact took the vehicle to the dealership ,and who is repairing the vehicle for the recall, but that vehicle is misfired. in order for the dealership to find out whatwas wrong with vehicle they will need to charge the contact an extra fee. the contact stated that he maintained the vehicle well , and that the vehicle hasn't had any problems with misfiring before. *ak

The original fan on our 2000 jeep grand cherokee explode on us while on the road, broke into many pieces and damaged the shroud. we bought an after market fan to fix the problem. end of june 2006 we took it to allen samuels chrysler jeep dealer to have it permanently fixed since it acted like there was still a problem. we paid almost $1000. right before thanksgiving we got a recall notice in the mail from chrysler on the fan being recalled and for the people that already had the problem fixed to send in the original receipt for reimbursement. so we did mail it all in and we got a phone call from chrysler denying the claim since hans at allen samuels chrysler jeep told them the problem was caused by the after market fan. so i called hans to ask him why he told chrysler it was caused by the after market fan if we originally came in with the blown up original fan and a broken shroud and thermostat. he said in their system it states that they replaced the after market fan because it was not blowing enough air. well that is wrong, but unfortunately hans was not willing to be helpful and take care of the matter. he also told me he spoke with my husband when we brought the car in and told him we have to have a new radiator to keep the car from over heating and he was there when the technician told my husband the same thing. the problem is, i was there too and that is not what they told us. about the after market fan, it was replaced because the original fan exploded, if that would not have happened we would have never needed an after market fan and we would not be in this situation, but chrysler and hans don't see it that way. i believe if there is a recall on a part and we already had it happen to us and we paid out of pocket we should get our money back. we also had a steel bracket on the driver seat brake and chrysler does not see it as a safety hazard therefore they will not replace it. *jb

The blend and recirculation door assembly in my 2000 jeep grand cherokee limited failed. this leads to a loss of heat and defroster. i live in minnesota so with no defroster this is a huge safety hazard. my windows won't defrost and will suddenly fog up without warning. i can suddenly lose all visibility. *jb

About every year the taillight/brake light sockets corrode and the lights quit functioning. cleaning them solves the problem. we live in phoenix area and so moisture is not a factor. *jb

1) no sign of failure, just happened out of no where 2)no heat from passenger side of vehicle at all, no floor heat, no front vent heat, and most importantly, no windshield defrost heat, causing a lot of fog and poor visibility during these cold months... 3)have not done anything to fix issue, cost of replacement parts and labor is $2000, down time of vehicle is 2 days to fix...a lot of work for a novice like myself. *jb

The blend doors have failed 2x. this is extremely dangerous as i no longer have defrost on the front windshield. this costs over $1000 to fix. the blend doors have flaps to control the hot and cold air for the hvac. mine was stuck on cold, and there is no way to defrost my car. i can not afford another $1000. *nm

When the lights are on, the brake lights go out when the brake pedal is used. my mechanic told me the dealership he bought parts from told him this is a known problem with jeep. *jb

Brake pulsation and heavy vibration during normal braking. this is due to defective brake componets i.e. warping of rotors caused by heat friction from inferior metal and or manufacturing process. the class action suit filed against daimler/chrysler only covers vehicles that were under the standard warranty period. although d/c isn't admitting guilt, the proposed settlement will cover only those vehicles that qualify under their rules. the attorneys for the settlement class did not litigate a claim or even contest the rights of the class members who were not covered by the warranty when the failures occurred. all of the class members who had this problem need to be compensated for these repairs. your agency needs to take action and review all of the data and evidence that proves this is a serious issue, and either have a recall or ask d/c to repair all of the defective vehicles, before these parts totally fail and cause death or injury! *jb

On sunday september 4, 2005 while returning from a 220 mile trip the radiator fan on our 2000 jeep grand cherokee fractured and separated, causing rupture of radiator, coolant loss and rapid overheating. the vehicle was towed to firestone auto repair where the radiator, fan and shroud assembly were replaced. the vehicle was picked up on september 7, 2005. it became apparent when leaving firestone that the transmission had suffered damage as a result of the overheating. the vehicle was taken to panhandle transmission where a rebuilt transmission was installed. a recall notice was issued by daimler-chrysler in october 2006. invoices, credit card statements and canceled check was submitted to daimler chrysler as proof of defect and subsequent damage repair. daimler-chrysler reimbursed the cost of the fan, radiator and shroud replacement on november 16, 2006 in the amount of $1003.89 but no reimbursement for the damage caused to the transmission ($1350.00) due to radiator failure and rapid overheating of the transmission coolant system. *jb

Heater does not work on the drivers side, cost to fix is ridiculous and i cannot believe that something this expensive happens so often on this vehicle. i have read dozens of accounts from other wj jeep owners having this problem! *nm

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 5 mph, there was a whining noise coming from the front of the vehicle. shortly thereafter, the heat gauge spiked to 300. the vehicle was stopped, and the engine compartment was inspected. the fluid in the radiator was audibly boiling, and the cooling fan had ceased to function. the vehicle was then driven back to the residence. the vehicle was not seen by a dealer. there was a nhtsa recall# 06v199000, which pertains to the cooling fan. the vehicle was not included in the vehicle due to the vin.

Dt*: the contact stated while driving various speeds, the vehicle operated at a reduced speed, and the engine stalled without warning. the vehicle was inspected by a dealer, who determined the fuel injectors were dropping at different times instead of together, and needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was not alerted.

Dt*: the contact stated the engine would over heat while the vehicle was in the stand still position on a frequent basis. on one occasion, the vehicle would not restart. the vehicle was towed to the dealer who determined the radiator fan relay switch had to be replaced. the contact had the part replaced. also, while traveling 40 mph, the vehicle had an extended stopping distance on normal road conditions when the brakes were applied normally. the brake lights did not signal any warning prior to the incident. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who determined the rotors needed to be replaced. the contact replaced the part, which corrected the problem.

We experienced extreme pulsing and jerking while applying our brakes. this problem manifested at about 10,000 miles. we had the problem repaired (dealer said the rotors were warped). this problem is now occurring aging at 20,000 miles. the pulsing is extreme and we are not confident in the safety of our brakes. we are now forced to pay again to have this repaired. jeep issued a tsb but not a recall - this is a very common problem and directly relates to the safety of their vehicle. they should issue a recall and fix the problem for everyone. a class action lawsuit has been filed as this problem is so prevalent yet jeep refuses to take responsibility. *jb

Under dash air condition/heater module melted wires and the module it self. replace with parts it melted second time and driver side heater and air condtioner works passenger side air conditioner works but not the heater. replaced damaged parts third time with repair kit still driver side heater air conditioner works and passenger side only air conditioner. i am afraid it is a on going problem and one day it might cought fire. in past six years i did not had a working air/heater for about three years when under waranty took it to the dealer but they did not fix it sayin it will cost me too much money. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 50 mph down an incline on slick wet roads, the brakes shuddered when applied lightly. prior warning of brake problems was gradual. the dealer was notified and mentioned similar occurrences with other consumers. the contact was directed to the tsb #0500302b after the dealer checked the vin # for recalls. no recalls were found by the dealer. no examinations or repairs have been made.

Just disgusted with the number of repairs i have needed to make to this vehicle. in the last six years the following repairs have been done: brakes replaced 3 times and need to be done again door window motor
