2000 DODGE Caravan

While slowing down for a stop light, at 20 mph the vehiclestops suddenly as if it was thrown into Park, andthe engine quits, and Transmission fluid is leaking on theground. The diagnosis was that the differential drive pin had sheared off and went through the Transmission and housing. The shop owner says there are many more of these type ofChrysler transmissions,that have the same problem. If we had somebody behind us at that moment, the resultswould have been very serious.

When driving in rain, the serpentine belt comes off. This results in failure to be able to control the vehicle. This has happened to me 2X in the last 2 months. The last time was on a major interstate in a storm. This vehicle needs to be recalled so that the situation can be corrected. The dealership told me that if it gets wet, it can slip off. Does this even make sense that it hasn’t been recalled yet? Extremely dangerous situation. I have had to have this vehicle towed 2X in 60 days. It’s obvious that there is a problem but no one wants to take responsibliity.

Transmission went out without warning at 75,000 miles. This is a 2000 dodge caravan and for the money when bought new, the transmission and brakes should last longer than this. Also, the dealerships do not want to help. Also, the brakes went out at 65,000 miles or less.

Transmission failed at 59K in May 2004. $2400 to repair. Received Dodge’s 3yr 36,000 mile warranty. Transmission failed again June 2004 61K. New transmission. Transmission failed again July 2004 around 62K. New Transmission. Transmission failed again 3 days later at 62K. I have had to pay to tow the vehicle each time and for rental cars. Have not had use of the vehicle for over 47 days during this time. Currently taking the transmission back again at my own expense. Wrote letter detailing issue to Corporate Dodge (case#12460125) refused twice to cover expenses or do anything else.

smells like burned oil and continuous clacking sound, since first week that we bought it. took it in for repairs on 3 different occassions and was told by dealer their was nothing wrong with it, when they never even checked to see if there was a problem, they kept saying that it was a brand new vehicle, (what can it possibly be wrong). On Sep 2003, the transmission finally broke, they kept the van in the repair shop for almost a month, when we finally got it back we noticed that the smell of burned oil and the clacking sound were still there, took it back again to the dealer and they said it was the engine, which they refused to fix due to lack of maintenance receipts, they are requesting over 20 receipts and I only have around 8, cause I do the maintenance on it myself, and I usually buy the case of oil. but we informed the dealer of the problem about a couple of weeks after we bought the van, and they refused to check or fix. van is still under extended warranty, but they refuse to fix it even though when they fixed the transmission on the services receipt it clearly states to check engine also, which they never did.

Serpentine belt was replaced with a new one by the dealer, and 10 days later flew apart. That belt was replaced free of charge be another Dodge dealer, but three months later came off, but did not break. It is now three months later, and the belt had to be replaced because of fraying.

Serpentine belt – again. Serpentine belt replaced on 3/13/02 under warranty. Replaced again after vehicle broke down on highway – 3/26/03 – Mileage at 32,644 – cost was $299.95 – just over 1 yr. warranty on MOPAR part, Dodge Corporate reimbursed me. This time, went to have recall done and belt checked… needed to be replaced again. Someone needs to hold Dodge responsible for their serpentine belt problems.Also… Front Sway Bar links were replaced on 4-27-02 and had to be replaced again on 2-11-05. This is ridiculous.Have written to arbitration for resolution of problem.Just bought at used 2004 Dodge Intrepid and it apprears to have suspension problems already… just 1,000 miles out of 36K mile warranty.

My 2000 grande caravan sport was leaking around the cowl onto the inside carpit. This seems rediculas on this new a car. The person who fixed it is a subcractor of my chysler dealer. He informed my that this is not unusal.

My 2000 Dodge Caravan has experienced a complete transmission failure at only 57000 miles. The transmission exhibits a "whining" noise which increases with engine rpm, has "bad" shifts and burnt smelling fluid. Dealer only gave the response that they would have to "tear it apart" to even offer an estimate. A local transmission shop, in business locally for 45 yrs. was able to estimate a full rebuild and unknown repairs to the transmission front pump assembly at $1800-$2200 to repair the condition. Although confronted with the extensive volume of information releted to problems with this transmission over the last dozen years, both the dealer and Chrysler customer service refused to assume any sort of responsibility for repair.

Electrical System, power door locks are eraticly locking and unlocking, all inside dome lights are intermittly flashing on and off and the key chime sounds. This occurs all at the same time. When this is occuring I’ve had the right side sliding door to roll open and the ABS to fail. The dealer has replaced body computers, door switches, adjusted stricker plates, ABS modulator and etc. This problem is still occuring. In Jan 03, the transmission began to leak, maintenance repair said the cooler hose clamp had come loose. In Feb 03, the transmission was still leaking, a secound maintenance repairman discovered the modulator leaking. I am still having problems with the Electrical system.

Drive belt began to make a \"chirping\" noise intermittently initially, but situation progressed until belt began to squeal. Dealership made multiple attempts to correct. Replaced belt, belt again, belt tensioner, belt again, water pump, adjusted power steering pump. At 60 000 miles, belt is sreaming continuously. Dealership to attempt to fix again July 22, 2004. In addition, drive belt has slipped off pulley 3 times since Jan.2001. Dealership considers this to be a separate problem. Automatic light switch on drivers door broken-light does not come on when I open my driver\’s door-plastic switch on the door pillar broken Glove box broken-plastic tethers that control the length of opening snapped-opening glove box causes the door to flop uncontolled open, threatening to snap it off its hinges.

Approaching a red light I tried to slow down by applying the brakes, however there was no response…I had the brakes pushed to the floor and even switched the car from drive to park…no response…consequently I ended up crashing into three cars bouncing from one to the other traveling at about 50mph.

Strut towers in engine compartment rusted through especially on the right. i've been told by a mechanic and others that the strut tower may fail completely and push up through the hood, causing accident and injury to driver (me).

Over the past several years i have noticed my headlight lens were fogging up to the point where they were not functioning safely. i took the car to the shop where they used an emulsifier liquid to partially restore the lenses. then i noticed that other cars had the same problem. this was not a problem when the manufacturers used glass lenses. now they use plastic. what can be done to encourage auto manufacturers to place safe no-fog lenses in their new vehicles?

When i tried to pull my dodge caravan (2000) out of the parking lot after a heavy raining day, i found the power steering didn't work. i could go forward or backward, but could not turn, or could turn only very slowly (i could hear the wheel kind of making clicking sound when i tried to turn). after driving very slowly on the parking lot and tried to turn slowly several time, the steering finally got back. i googled online and found many people have the same problem, mostly with a dodge, but also some other cars. http://www.topix.com/forum/autos/dodge-grand-caravan/tc37vjlp6md4pohvj since i don't drive much and mostly park my vehicle in the garage, i don't have much problem. it has happened a couple more times after the first incident, but it usually returns normal after i make several small turns in the parking lot. but this morning, it happened again, after i parked my car outside with an overnight rain, and the wheel was still kind of stuck after i drove about 5 miles, making several turns on purpose in the neighborhood. it's still pouring outside, i don't know if i can get the steering back to normal after work. since i am not the only people having the same problem, i hope the manufacturer could help us solve the problem. thanks!

When driving down the road at 25 mph the drivers seat all of sudden fell back (the top seat) and wont stay up in position. it seems that it is faulty due to a mechanism not being attach correctly. i have not been able to get the seat fixed due to high costs. also the rear chassis brake tube seem to rust extremely and create itself a hole.

9/8/2008 i was traveling on ir80 & i must of swerved a bit & the van struck a dot paddle marker @ humboldt mile marker 45 in nevada. the van became engulfed in flames & overturned sideways at least 4 times. my mother & father parrished as a result of this accident, burned so much they couldn't recognize their gender. my wife & i escaped with her getting severely burned about 76% & i about 68%, we was transported to humboltd hospital then air transported to u of u burn center salt lake city utah where she spent about 7 months in ccu burn unit & i about 3 months. the marker post was uprooted & struck the undercarriage of the van & detached the fuel line then punctured the cross member & depositing the fuel line in the hole the fire started then we overturned with a series of explosions. a mechanic explained the severed fuel line was a return line from the evap.canister to the fuel tank & that the fuel system stayed at 49 psi being fed by an electric fuel pump i remember driving speaking with my father, my wife & mom was sleeping in the back seat then i woke up on fire trying to escape the wreckage, i hollered @ my wife & i rolled out of the van. my wife checked mom she was dead then another explosion blew my wife to the front seat between where my dad & i sat, she grabbed dad but he wouldn't come cause of mom. two people moved my wife after my father shoved her out. i started back to the van when another explosion engulfed my father. i dropped to my knees & told a bystander i just killed my mother & father. my children & family hired a big time lawyer & it was looking good until chrysler filed for bankruptcy & cleared them from all lawsuits prior to their bankruptcy. my lawyer had to walk away with a $30,000 loss, she was 44 & i was 48 years old prime time of our life we still battle health issues from the burns & never got a red cent from chrysler. *tr

While driving down the highway it started to rain and the power steering failed for unknown reasons. the heater fan stopped which made it impossible to clear the windows, the vehicle quickly overheated, the low battery light came on. was able to get to the side of the road with much difficulty and discovered the power steering belt had dropped off. this has happened repeatedly every time it rains even a little bit and is very much a safety hazard. it has made the vehicle very unreliable. merely reconnecting the belt is not a solution to this issue. i was wondering if there has been a recall for the problem. *tr

Today i was on an urban freeway in heavy downpour. the downpour was so heavy rain could be seen running off the road. traffic was wide spread, but moving at 45-50 mph, due to the rain. my wipers, at the highest setting, slow down. car dings. battery light comes on. i turn off the defroster (ac and ventilation), reduce wiper speed setting, switch from headlights to running lights, all to reduce electrical load. i then notice that the power steering has failed. it was really scary. true fear. the fear which we do not often encounter. i safely got the vehicle off the freeway. no further failure of systems. i drove the vehicle to the nearest shop i knew of, with caution lights on. i there learned that the accessory belt had come off of the engine, due to the rain. the belt was still in good condition, so they slid the same belt back on. i will have my preferred mechanic install an "anti slip" tensioner, belt, and pulley this weekend. this issue, the serpentine belt slipping off the engine in rain and snow, is known to chrysler, and known to the nhtsa. but it was not known to me until it threatened my safety, and the safety of the motorists around me. if i had begun going around a curve while switching off accessories, driving one handed with a failed power steering system before i knew it had failed, i could have wrecked. why one handed? because i was turning off accessories because i didn't understand what was wrong, because the warning the car provided suggested that was what i should be doing to keep my car from stalling. i don't know why nhtsa decided this did not merit a recall. they were wrong. i am very thankful that money (to implement the technical service bulletin nhtsa won't share) can fix what went wrong today. don't operate a gen iii chrysler minivan without a belt upgrade. we cannot control when it rains. *tr

Every time i turn on my heater and drive down the road a engine light will come on. if i leave the heater off for a few days it eventually goes off. my driver side window will act up as the door lock when the engine light is on. another problem is the gaskets underneath the engine leaks going down the road. i know that it does have miles, but it's a well taken care car and i think you should feel safe going down the road. i have looked up these problems and there are more people with the same problems. i would never buy a dodge. *tr

After driving through a small water puddle i lost power steering and generator. it wagon a windy mountain road and was very hazardous as it left usona blind curve in the rain. it turned out that the drive belt had come off. is appears to be a common an known issue with chrysler. *tr

Serpentine belt slips off in the rain causing a loss in power steering, ac (for window defogging), power (no alternator when headlights are on during rain). when it slipped off, the ability to correct for loss of traction due to water was reduced due to lack of power steering and the windshield fogged up quickly due to the loss of the ac compressor. slid of the interstate and slid down the median. multiple other instances of belt slipping off (4 times in past 3 days), though at lower rates of speed. dodge denies there is an issue even though there are many reports on the internet relating to this problem. it is also interesting that they now sell a upgrade kit that changes out the two non-grooved pulleys for grooved ones and add a belt with grooves on both sides. they said that they would only fix this problem when enough people reported the problem. *tr

2000 dodge caravan. driver side strut cap rusted through. this is not a normal rust pattern. still have a 95 caravan and strut caps are perfect. the rust is such that a good bump could poke the strut through the cap and through the windshield also causing loss of steering control. this is a dangerous safety issue that has not been recalled. again, this is not a normal rust pattern and dodge is aware of the problem having created replacement caps which are not installed under warranty. dodge however refuses responsibility for a manufacturer defect and steers customers to body shops. *tr

The serpentine belt on a 2000 dodge caravan slips off when you go through a puddle of water or wet conditions such as in the rain or snow, resulting in complete loss of power steering (loss of control); water pump (overheating and possible damage to the aluminum heads); alternator (no battery charging) and ac. this was after a new belt and tensioner was installed. i have researched the problem and there are numerous incidents sited on related web sites. my wife almost wrecked because of no steering. it happened over a dozen times to her and 4 times to me. cost of putting belt back on was around $40 each time. tried a fix using a disc over the tensioner and idle pulley recommended by dealer, but first time through a rain puddle, it slipped off. a $200 fix is available plus $150 labor called a gates kit # 38379k also by goodyear #49215k. they both come with a double sided grooved belt, grooved idle pulley and grooved tensioner and states that it fixes the problem of belts coming off the dodge vans in wet weather. if this is part of the selling point of the kit, then there must be a problem with chrysler, dodge, plymouth vans and the consumer shouldn't have to pay for this "fix." this is extremely dangerous and should be paid for and corrected by chrysler. *tr

I bought the van used and nothing was noted about the strut tower on inspection however a friend of mine noted it within 6 months of me buying the car. as he was a licensed mechanic i took him seriously. the driver's side strut tower was rusting on the top where the bolts that hold it to the body exist. i continued to get worse and after witnessing a dodge caravan similar to mine literally fall apart while attempting to park i realized that i should get it fixed. i found junk yard to get them to cut out a strut tower off a junked caravan and then found a good welder to replace the top of the strut tower which was the only part of the tower that was rusting. the top the tower was paper thin and when he showed me the piece he removed i noted that i could push my finger through the metal that was left. if this had broken through while i was driving i believe a serious, injurious accident would've occurred as the front of my vehicle would've dropped to the ground and like the car i saw in the parking lot, my axle would've broken and i would've lost control of the vehicle..deadly at 60 mph. *tr

I noticed serious rusting on the top of the drivers side and passengers strut towers. i read on a car forum chrysler knows of the problem with shock tower rust rot and has a tsb for it. however, chrysler will not fix this defects for free. dodge/ chrysler sells repair kits (caps with screws and glue) for the rusted shock tower caps. the repair kit doesn't seem strong enough for solving this structural problem. the forum says welding the caps is more structurally sound. i believe that this is a big safety issue due to a major structural engineering defect. *tr

I purchased a 2008 dodge caravan about 2 years ago from elite motors in victorville. the car was not smoked at the time of purchase and had to be done so about 1 month later. they said they had a hard time getting it to pass and then it passed but when i got it back i smogged it and it failed. elite motos said they would work with me on resolving things but they never did. since i've had the vehicle there has been a loud slapping noise coming from the air conditioner, the fuel pump has been replaced, two tires have blown, several sets of front break pads have been replaced, 2 battery's have been replaced, and within the last month both front and rear brakes/master brake cylinder/calipers/water pump/radiator has been replaced. my car is again in the shop because my engine light and air bag lights have come on, there are no brake lights, and my car was hesitating and loosing power intermittently with a clunking coming from the engine. my mechanic tells me that i will need a new engine. also, the vehicle was involved in an accident a few months ago. i had asked geiko if when they did the body work - would they also look for things mechanically wrong just to make sure everything was o.k. they said they would, the shop (performance in victorville said they would and gave me a business card of the guy they refer things out to but they never did? point of impact is listed at 6. rear. *tr

I am having difficulties with my vehicle being on a recall list. can a car dealership refuses to fix a part on a nationwide recall list? i have a 2000 dodge caravan. for the past five years, the horn, turn signals, dash lights would become inop but the car would start up. usually i would have to turn the engine completely off and jolt the tilt wheel up and down for it to overcome this defect. it does this intermittently - would be fine for weeks and then act up. now, a new problem is occurring - turning the ignition key is not starting the van. again, if i play with the tilt wheel and keep on turning the key, it will then start. i took it to a automotive repair place and they told me its the 'clockspring'. they told me it is on a nationwide recall since 2004. i never got a notice about this recall. i've owned the car since 2002. so, i took it to jeff wyler's car dealership (springifield, ohio) and they refused to replace the clockspring. "the defect is intermittent and this recall must be for the component to be a total failure before replacing", according to them. i am not going to wait for the car's clockspring to fail and also, they can't find out why it is not turning on - because this problem is not related to the clockspring. are they permitted to refuse to replace a recall part? i think the two problems are related. i do not want the clockspring problem to be put oh hold until there is a 'total failure." my wife is the primary driver. *tr

Have noticed the driver's side shock tower on the top rusting to the point where safety is a major concern. being that it is a possible safety issue before having any repairs done wanted to know if there is or is going to be a safety recall on this issue. *tr

Just purchased 2000 dodge caravan se and after purchasing i noticed rust-rotted holes in drivers side shock tower top. i can't safety it until repaired. i read on a car forum chrysler knows of the problem with shock tower rust rot and supposedly have a tsb for it. but i know how hard it is to convince chrysler to fix their manufacturing defects for free. the forum also mentioned chrysler sells repair kits for the rusted shock tower caps. but even their fix kit doesn't seem strong enough for a structural problem. they sell caps with screws and glue. but the forum says welding the caps is more structurally sound. tomorrow, june 9, 08, i will call chrysler to see if it's a free repair, which it should be because it's a safety issue. i would like to know who i can contact here in canada and find out about any other tsb's for this van. thanks. *tr

This is inquiry to chrysler's problem with front strut towers on 2000 caravan/voyager/t&c. specifically: service bulletin, number: 23-044-02, group: body; date: oct. 14, 2002; subject: ns strut tower corrosion. if this is only a "cosmetic" problem, why is a new strut cap and ns strut installation kit required? sounds like a structural problem repair to me. my dealerships service manager cautioned my against going through the winter without the repair! he said there was no recall, just this tsb. if this was a problem that chrysler acknowledged by 10/14/02, shouldn't it be looked into for safety concerns. many drivers will just assume "it's just rust" and not know of a problem until the strut cap breaks. this failure, on a highway, could result in deadly crash! has nhtsa looked into this problem? is there any remedy, other than the consumer paying the approximate $500 repair? if not, it appears that corporate profit trumps ethics (lives/injuries) again? please let me know your position on this matter. thank you very much. *tr

2000 dodge caravan 3.0 (40k miles) replacing the drive belt &/r idle / tensioner every (2) years. belt p/n (good year) 460805 / 6pk2045. tensioner mopar 04536154ad. the dealer just smiles, this does not seems to be very reliable. any other type complaints files with this type unit????? i replaced the belt on sept 2003, the dealer did the tensioner & belt @31k in 2005. i again did the belt on 03/31/07. the dealer did the tensioner @44k , 05/02/2007. this is my daughters van, a school teacher, drive to & from schools for the most part i have through last tensioner & the belts that i did. so if she or i plans to go on a trip, we must either replace the tensioner & drive belt or carry one with us. now on my 2001 caravan with over 60k i still have the some tensioner & drive belt. duh??????? i need help with this. the dealership is not going to do anything. *jb

Loss of power steering and alternator charging - serpentine belt falling off after hitting small water puddle on 2000 dodge grand caravan. i lost power steering on a curve as a result of hitting a small water puddle. vehicle has received all service maintenance including replacement of belt tensioner but still fell off. i am fairly strong and was able to come out of the turn. someone with less arm strength would have gone straight off the road and crashed. dodge dealer has no fix for this that they are willing to talk about. this is a serious safety hazard since minivans often carry a lot of kids and if this happens on a wet road there could be serious injuries and fatalities from loss of control. *nm

The strut covers have rusted and now there is a great likelihood that the strut will shortly come through the cover and possibly come through the windshield. this problem isn't that visible without looking for it. *jb

Driver side strut tower rusting out very bad. caravan only has 80,000 miles and it has to be replaced before the install of new strut. it is only on the driver side and looks to be that my 2000 caravan is not the only one. the battery is on the same side as the rusted tower. the passenger side is not affected at all. my mechanic told me that he is seeing a lot of the caravans and town and countries with the same problem. the top half of the tower has to be cut out and a new one welded in. thank you daimler chrysler for not standing behind your products. and you wonder why the american market is going to the japanese auto makers. *jb

I was driving 200 caravan on a surface street in busy traffic. the serpentine belt slipped off and i was left with no power steering. there was no warning until i had to turn. i put the belt back on and later that evening in the rain the belt slipped off again. at this time it was dark and i was on a highway. i replaced the belt with an old spare i keep in the van and i made it home. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated while coming to a stop at 40mph the contact hit another vehicle in the passenger side and the frontal airbags did not deploy. the airbag light was not illuminated prior to the accident. the vehicle sustained frontal damage and was deemed totaled by the insurance agency. the passenger and driver of the vehicle sustained minor injuries and both were wearing seatbelts. a police report was filed at the scene. the manufacturer was alerted.

Right front strut tower was noticed to be showing significant rusting, asked dealer to investigate, their response was the vehicle was out of warranty. body shop said they have seen on other vehicles and it is a recurring problem and a costly repair. safety ramifications are serious if one were to experience a failure while driving. chrysler customer service claims to have no knowledge of any similar problem. obviously the problem did not just start but has been getting progressively worse over time. i would not consider this a "wear" problem but a manufacturing defect. *jb

My 2000 dodge caravan has a safety issue because part of the unibody (bilateral strut towers) are rusting from the inside outward. the driver side is in such poor condition that it will not pass inspection due to a safety issue. the metal is so corroded you can poke a pen through the metal on the strut tower located on the driver side. according to dealership, mechanics, used part distributors: "this is a known problem with caravans of this time frame ('96-2000). the daimler chrysler corporation has even come out with a "patch kit" because of this issue although experienced mechanics recommend removal of struts and welding new ones in place. this is a costly fix due to being labor intensive. regardless... after several contacts with daimler chrysler consumer line, they are not willing to reimburse me for fixing this defect or for patching it. they do not feel it is a recall item and apparently are not concerned with the integrity of the frame as a safety issue. i will fix my vehicle at my own expense and will never buy a product from their line again since they are not willing to stand behind the safety/quality of their product. there has not been an incident or accident yet and i will not be driving this vehicle until it is repaired properly. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated there is a clicking noise coming from the steering column. in may of 2003, the steering column was replaced and in january of 2004 the clock springs were replaced. in may of 2004, the steering was replaced for the second time and the clock springs were again replaced in august of 2004. there is a nhtsa recall # 04v480000, concerning the air bag clock springs, however when the recall repair was performed on november 11, 2004 it did not remedy the problem. the vehicle is having the same problems again. the dealer has not been notified and no repairs were made. also ,complained about clicking noise in steering, and replaced cclockspring . in addition, replaced canister due to leaking. *ak

2000 dodge caravan had loss of serpentine belt. this caused lack off power steering and power brakes. *ts this problem occurred three time and happened mostly during wet weather conditions. the dealer installed a pulley shield to alleviate the problem. even after the shield was install the belt slipped off again. ***no answer required***

2000 dodge caravan with only 56,000 miles had to be towed because the transmission broke down and had to be replaced for a total of $$2250.00. then on 1/11/06 it happened again. we had to have a new torque converter plus all the other parts replaced again. we have maintained this vehicle according to the manual and it had to be fixed at the closest transmission repair shop. i have contacted dodge about this, and they have denied any responsibility and refused to hear of this complaint. the mechanic rutland transmissions (281) 350-1365 told us that he sees many of these dodge caravans with the same problem. he told us that he sees many of these vans with similar transmissions needing replacements that go bad around the time that mine did. this is really a horrible problem that dodge will no realize. what can be done with this kind of problem that seems to happen right after the van is paid for. we did not get the extended warranty thinking that nothing like this would ever happen. *ak can you help? i would appreciate this very much. i can fax the repair invoices if you need them. this is why people are going with japanese cars which prove that american isn't as dependable.

One day on my way to work (about 10 miles from my house) i was going approximately 55 mph when the transmission slammed into second gear and would not shift into another gear. i had my van towed to a shop and it was two sensors in the transmission. the very next day i went to get my van i went to work the van seemed to run like new, and then when i got off of work i rolled down my power window on the drivers side and the window would not roll back up! to have the two sensors fixed was around two hundred dollars and to get the window fixed was one hundred and twenty five dollars and that part for the window was the regulator and the motor, for a new part was like three hundred dollars, i got one used. it has been six months since i got these things replaced and now they are both broke again! the sensors and the drivers side window motor and regulator. i do have the parts that are defective now but i do not have the parts from before. *nm

I own a dodge braun entervan.in the design of this van braun cuts out the floor to lower it 10 incher.the brake lines are replaced and are located under the lowered floor.the quality of the new brake lines are inferior and rust through causing complete brake failure. i tried to tell braun of the problem but they would not return my phone calls. *nm

I was turning left into a parking lot when the passenger side outer tie rod broke. this caused an immediate stop as the wheel turned in. the vehicle steering was last inspected in july 2005 (va state safety inspection) and the vehicle has been well maintained. the tie rod broke at the tapered stud. this did result in a lost of steering. there would have been serious consequences had this happened at higher speed. the inner and outer tie rods were replaced as well as the unbroken drivers side outer tie rod.*jb

Dt: the contact complained that the fuel injection fuel rail was leaking. he smelled a gas odor coming from the van and had it inspected by a mechanic. the smell was coming from the leak. it has been leaking for the past four weeks. the contact took the van to a mechanic for service and repairs. after contacting the dealer and manufacturer he discovered that this vehicle was not covered under a recall at this time.*ak updated 1/4/2006 - the vehicle leaked fuel each time the ignition was turned. *nm

Dt: contact states the lever on the seat that is used to recline the driver's seat broke. this happened on 8-16-05. the dealer will not cover the cost of the repairs. *ak the consumer could not afford to have the seat lever fixed. *nm

While pulling out of a local market parking lot, there was a loud noise coming from the left front undercarriage. the vehicle would not move with the transmission engaged. the vehicle was towed to the nearest dealer. i was informed by the dealer that the left front axle had failed. i requested that the dealer replace the failed component and had the dealer hold onto the failed part. when i picked up the repaired vehicle, i looked at the failed component and saw that it had sheared completely into two pieces. fortunately there were no injuries or damage. i consider this mechanical failure an extreme safety hazard. *nm

I am writing today because i purchased a 2000 dodge caravan in february 2005. every month since i purchased my car i have had to have the brakes serviced. in march the brakes were dusted off. again in april the brakes again were dusted off according to the dealership. in may they finally replaced the brakes i believe both front and back. in june i took the car to a different garage and paid to have the breaks replaced again. then in july the calipers and brakes were replaced. in august the same garage stated that the brakes needed to be replaced and the abs now needs to be replaced. i could only have the brakes done at this time. i have spent over $1000 minimum so far repairing my car. at this point i have not replaced the abs due to lack of funds. also i was told that the struts needed to be replaced, an alignment needed to be done, rear shocks, and new tires. i need some one to please take a look at this car. *jb

My mechanic while replacing the front brakes pointed out to me that there was a crack in the front left tower which holds the shock. he indicated that this was a common problem that he sees with the dodge caravan. i have a 2000 sport model. he indicated that failure could cause the shock to pop out, breaking the windshield and potential result in loss control of the car. the dealer and chrysler have been un cooperative in resolving the problem. dealer or chrysler would not help in telling me how to file a complaint. *nm

The serpentine belt has come off my van 5 times in the last 6 months. this is a family van and driven daily with 5 children in it. this is a complaint of many caravan owners. there are sites all over the internet complaining about this problem.

Dt: caller had to have the main belt on the engine fixed 6 times. when the belt came off she lost control of the steering, and the engine became red hot. caller stated while driving, the belt came off the steering and froze. the consumer couldn't turn the wheel. dealer said every time caller brought in the van, the belt was replaced, but the problem recurred. dealer did not know why this was happening so many times. manufacturer said dealer was doing all they could, and there was nothing else the manufacturer could do. caller had it towed 5 times. a few times the belt was just slipped back on until they got to dealer. dates of towing ere: 11-19-02, 2-19-03, 4-15-04, 6-19-04, and 6-30-05. dealer said this was not the only van they saw with this problem. caller stated the speed varied when the belt came off.*ak

Dt: the contact owns a 2000 dodge caravan. she took vehicle to the dealership last week for maintenance. her husband just put new brakes on the vehicle and the dealership inspected them and everything was great. she left the service department and now the master cylinder malfunctioned. the dealership would not suggest her to drive the vehicle, but she had to drive the vehicle home. abs light has been on her vehicle for the past year and a half it has been coming on randomly. dealership said they could not figure out what she was talking about because the light would not come on while they were test driving it and they could not duplicate. the brake failure happened the day after she picked the vehicle up from the dealership which was july 8 and that the soonest they could get her vehicle in was july 15, 2005. she had a recall on electrical system , and they would never check this. but she was experiencing this problem because inside light, stereo, windows would not go up or down, and headlights failed. the dealership stated that vehicle was not recalled. when she went back on july 15th they did not even test drive vehicle because mileage was the same when she left as it was when she took the vehicle into the dealership.*ak

Left front strut tower rusted away, not repaired at this time.

When i took the car in for tire replacement, the tire people showed me a leak on both rear brake cylinders. the front brake cylinder now also has a small leak from the gasket. the minivan has 25,000 miles on it and was purchased december 2000. it is driven on good suburban roads.

Purchased a dodge caravan new, delivered 03/19/00. 12/21/00 leaking trans solenoid pack (not sure if that was related to consequent failures of the serpentine belt). the serpentine belt, which, according to dodge mechanics should last 70,000 miles, has failed four times already; mileage at last failure: 68,145 miles. the belt breaks with very little warning at all, and all power is lost, brakes, steering - which could be extremely dangerous, causing my death or the death of others. fortunately, after the first time, i recognize the sounds - like a twig being caught in the engine - as the belt suddenly frays, and pull over immediately.this is a very dangerous fault. dates and mileage of failures: 04/19/01 18,456 - i was told by the dealership repairing the vehicle that i "had a better chance of wining the lottery than this happening again!" 05/18/02 32,229 miles 02/17/03 40,349 a shield, which had not been put on this year's model, was put on by the dealership. the shield was on model years before and after 2000, but was omitted from the 2000 line. the shield stopped rain and snow from going into the engine, freezing the block, and/or mixing with the oil which would cause the belt to slide on the pulleys and the belt to brake. if the dealership is aware of this fault, surely the manufacturer is. while there is a longer time period between the belt braking after the shield was put on, it still broke again in under 20,000 miles. 05/21/05 68,149 internet searches have revealed an extended warranty on all 1997-2000 caravans/grand caravans for all ac compressor repairs, put out by chrylser in october of 2003. (http://allpar.com/dealers/warranty.html) can this car be declared dangerous and a lemon?

With 79,000 miles the transmission went into safe mode and locked in 2nd gear. repair shop hooked vehicle up to diagnostics and vehicle will need a transmission rebuild. vehicle has a history of transmission leaks and transmission lines letting go dating back to first year of ownership. a transmission service (at several hundred dollars) was completed in february at 74,000 miles. owned 96 caravan -transmission failed at 51,000 miles. was assured by salesperson and service manager that transmission on 2000 was a complete redesign or i would not have purchased a second caravan.

While visiting a family friend consumer discovered a water leak t in his caravan. this leak resulted from water running down the exterior roof grooves and down to the back of the van. it had a crack in the weld that was found on both sides of the upper portion of the van body, where the rear hatch was located. the water entered the crack and ran down the inside of the van . also, puddles were found underneath the carpet, which results in a mild wet carpet, but even worse, rust.*ak i lifted the rear carpet in my van and there was water and the carpet pad was wet. i hadn't noticed it before because we have a plastic liner tray in the back. i believe many people have this problem but are unaware of it.

Consumer was changing the oil on the vehicle when he noticed that the spring on the mcpherson strut was breaking off. this could cause the hood on the vehicle to pop off, increasing the risk of a crash. *ak

While driving at approximately 30 mph, ring and pinion sheared off, causing the vehicle to coast. there was no power to generate gears for moving.the transmission let go at the same time. all this happened without warning. vehicle was currently out of warranty. *ak transmission blew a hole into and through entire transmission. *bf *nm

While driving in inclement weather only power steering failed. driver was unable turn left or right. driver pulled over, and vehicle was towed to a garage for inspection, and mechanic determined that power steering belt needed to be replaced, and replaced it. however, the problem recurred. *ak

Sometimes while driving at times my van (automatic 4-cylinder 2000 caravan), it will continuously shift, making the van fell like its pulling and giving/jerky (**scary when this happens**). the van will shake(vibrate). the gas pedal even vibrates. the van sounds loud(front area of car), my son says it sounds like a race car.he gets scared. the wheels seems to be hugging/gripping the ground( another way to describe it, it feels as if gravity was pulling the car downward). the van seems to lose power, and pressing the gas pedal makes the rumbling noise (engine?) louder.*ak

Sept. 7, 2001, the battery in my one year old dodge caravan died. i asked that the cause of the failure be investigated. i was blown off. april 29, 2003, the second battery died. i was out of warranty at this time and again i asked that this issue be investigated. nothing was done. each time before the battery died, the alarm system on my car would act flakey. when this started happening again, i asked landers chrysler to look at it. they found nothing. a few weeks later, i was driving down a hill with a curve when the engine died without warning. i lost my power steering and brakes and nearly hit a mail box. i was able to start my car and continued but nearly hit a car in the middle of the turn when it happened again because i was not able to turn sharp enough. i was lucky in both cases that i did not hit anything or any one. landers eventually located the problem, a faulty evs module. i contacted chrysler but they have refused to repair the faulty equipment because i now have 63,800 miles on my car even though evidence indicates the problem existed when i bought the vehicle. landers told me i could disable the device by pushing a button on the dash that deactivates the anti-theft device. i was lucky that i did not have an accident, certainly the potential was there. i did a search on some auto forums and found several people who describe very similar problems to mine and others who complain about suddenly stalling. i have no idea how widespread this problem is. i do know that it took some time to determine the problem with my car. i think this matter should be investigated because anytime a driver loses control because they can not steer or stop, other drivers, property and pedestrians are in damages. *nm

We had 3-transmission failures in our 1990 grand caravan at <72k miles, which dodge handled reasonably well. our 2000 grand caravan sport had to have its solenoid pack replaced today at ~50k miles, so i suspect a transmission is in its short term future as well. iv'e read all sorts of horror stories regarding safety issues during these transmission failures, i.e., drive lines puching through cases, etc.. what is being done about this? isn't a company every liable for its products? my understanding was that the transmissions were fixed, or i never would have bought another caravan, especially if a safety issue was involved. is this a safety isssue or not?*ak

Part in question was a cross over manifold pipe; it connected two manifolds together on top of the engine. *bf the consumer requested a refund. the consumer was told the vehicle would not pass state inspection because the vehicle had an exhaust leak. *sc *jb

The brake master cylinder failed, the brake line leaked, the transmission malfunctioned, the front axle and caliper pads/rotors broke spilling ball joint into the street. *bf there were also screeching sounds, odor(s), vibrations, the steering wheel did not function properly, and the a/c failed.

Over the past year the drivebelt has fallen off the engine pulleys three times during heavy rain. *nm

Dealership refused to honor the air bag clock spring recall 04v480000 because the vehicle had been modified for disability use.*ak

Consumer's vehicle was rear ended and forced into another vehicle in front of consumer's vehicle. upon impact, neither frontal air bag deployed. manufacturer was not notified, and no injuries were reported.

Dealership is not following the guidelines of the airbag clock spring recall 04v480000 in which the clock spring should be replaced on vehicles that have 70000 miles or less. instead they are only inspecting the air bags.*ak

The srs light appeared on the dashboard and remained on. the consumer drove to the dealer. the mechanic informed the driver that the clock spring needed to be replaced. please fill in additional information. *jb

Unknown water was coming through the dashboard/instrument panel on the passenger's side, and consumer was unable to locate the problem. dealer informed the consumer that this vehicle was outside the warranty, and there was no manufacturer's recall on that issue. *ak

04 v 480 000/air bag clockspring: the air bag light remained on while driving. the dealer was contacted, however they informed the consumer that their vehicle was not covered under that recall. *jb

The vehicle stalled while driving. the check engine light came on prior to the vehicle stalling. a diagnostic test was performed, but no failure code was found. the cause of the vehicle stalling was not determined. *ak on other occasions the vehicle would stall when making turns. *sc

Air bags deployed inadvertently, without adequate cause on sunday august 7, 2004 at around 5 p.m. i was traveling in my 2000 dodge caravan on a lightly traveled gravel surface road that is rough in spots, at 10 mph or less when both front airbags . i stopped immediately, unaware of what had caused them to deploy in the absence of any front end or side collision. given that i was seated upright and not thrown forward by any collision, the driver side bag slighlty contacted the left side of my face, scraping it. my reading glasses, placed on the passenger seat, open, upside down and with lenses facing forward, were flattened by the passenger side airbag. i got out of the vehicle and surveyed the situation. a haed-size stone had contacted the leading edge of the muffler and been rolled up and free. observing no damage of any significance, i consulted my owner's manual, stuffed the airbags back into their cavities and drove home, somewhat shaken by the experience. i contacted daimler chrysler. the special investigations team had the vehicle examined. it responded, stating that it feels that the airbags operated properly by deploying in this situation. i challenged the finding and requested a copy of the investigation report. my request was denied by daimler chrysler claiming the information is 'proprietary'. it advised me to persue repairs through my insurance company, or hire my own investigator and attorney. the repair estimate of record is $2893.63, minus a $500 deductible. i have not accepted a settlement or had the vehicle repaired for fear that my insurer will raise my rates to recover the large payout.*ak

While driving, there was a lot of smoke coming from underneath the vehicle. the vehicle continued to run. the consumer was advised by the mechanic not to drive the vehicle, because all the fluids had leaked out. please provide any further information. *jb the transmission failed in the consumers vehicle. fluid leaked out a hole blown in the casing but the consumer was still able to drive serveral miles. *tc

I have had 4 complete transmission failures with my 2000 caravan: 2 ofwhich required a complete rebuild and 2 of which required entirely new units (transmissions) and new cv axles as a result of the transmission locking up. the worse of the 4 times was on thanksgiving 2002, less than 2 weeks after a factory rebuild where the front wheels locked up while on the interstate. 3 of 4 repairs were completed at a chrysler/dodge dealership. the 4th and so far final repair was completed at a local transmission shop and it has lasted the longest, over 22,000 miles. after looking on the internet, there are so many complaints about caravan transmissions. i really feel that this warrants a defect investigation. please help all of us people who have dumped $30,000 into junk. this is not an isolated incident. i have much more specifics i would like to provide, but this form is limited to 2000 characters.... my original submission contained 3,493 characters so it has been trunkated to fit in the space allotted. *ak

The bolt that holds the idle pulley to the engine sheared off the engine in my 2000 3.3 liter grand caravan sport. the vehicle has less than 48000 miles on it and left me with no power steering. if my wife was driving there would have definitely been an accident because there is no way she could have steered the van due to the total lack of any power steering. even more frightening is that we just came back from a trip to florida,if that happened on i-95 traveling at 70 mph the consequences could have been catastrophic it happened in a parking lot at only 7 mph. *jb

Consumer received recalls 04e036000 and 04e035000 on vehicle that was modified. had taken it on appointed date to a certified dealer of modified vehicles, ability center-macy's liftgate, for repairs. upon arriving was informed not able to do recall repairs due to vehicle being modified by another company. also, consumer was told not to drive vehicle from manufacturer's general manager. in addition, was informed by manufacturer to take vehicle back to original dealership for the correction. *ak

Consumer received a recall notice concerning ignition problem. consumer could move vehicle out of park without inserting the key into the ignition. consumer has not taken the vehicle to be checked out yet, but will do so soon. *ak

While driving 10 mph at 8,000 miles brakes failed. no impact reported. *ak

We purchased a 2000 dodge caravan with goodyear regatta 2 tires on it. over the last 6 months we have had 3 blow outs on the highway. the last broke the back molding of the car and blew the gas cap off. *ak

During a 35 mph frontal vehicle collision front air bags did not deploy. consumer sustained neck injures. dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. *ak the consumer stated that the vehicle shifts out of the park position without the foot behing on the brake. 4 year old hit the shift lever and the vehicle rolled down the driveway and across the street. *tc

Serpentine belt shreds and comes apart. while driving suddenly there's a noise like the belt is slapping around under the hood. serpentine belt was replaced 3 times .the first time this occurred dealership indicated that the pulley tensioner spring broke and the pulley locked to the side, which allowed the belt to ride off the side. the second time this occurred dealership indicated that the pulley locked up and broke, allowing the belt to slip off. the third time it occurred no cause was given. currently vehicle is at the dealership having a diagnostic test performed because the failure recurred. *ak

Without any prior warning the entire pulley that supports the serpentine belt separated from the motor and fell out from under the car while driving on the road rendering the car undrivable. luckily i was not traveling fast and was able coast into my driveway in my neighborhood. i found the pulley which shows where the attachment bolt snapped in half. it certainly looked like a defective part and i would have likely sued if an injury had occurred. the dealership did nothing in the form of any financial compensation for what i consider to be a defective part or poorly designed system. there are other similar complaints out there but no recall. my van had 56,242 miles on it at the time.*ak

Air bag light came on intermittently about three weeks ago. two days later, the air bag light went on and stayed on. i then noticed that the horn and the cruise control did not work on the steering column, however, the horn operates when using the keyless entry system. i called a dodge dealership on may 24, 2004 and was told that the problem was most likely a bad clock spring that needed replacement. the work requires removal of the steering wheel. i researched this clock spring problem on the internet and it became apparent that clock spring replacment on certain jeep and chrysler models is fairly common. some models have been recalled because of the clock spring problem.

While driving 70 mph consumer applied the brakes and pedal went to the floor. consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, drove it to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic could not duplicate the problem. also, driver informed the mechanic that windshield wipers came on and off on their own. *ak

While driving, the crs light appeared on the dashboard and remained on. the horn and cruise control would not work. the driver drove the vehicle to the dealer for inspection. the mechanic informed the driver that the clock spring needed replacement due to worn parts. *la

Since transmission failure occurred eight months after warranty expired, dealership wouldn't cover the cost of replacing the transmission. *ph a faulty pin in the differential unit where in manufacturer is aware of. the pin broke and went right through the transmission case. *la

When attempt was made to proceed forward from stopped position, the van failed to move. after several attempts the van was taken home. upon inspecting, transmission oil had leaked out. transmission fluid was put back in to drive the van to a mechanic. the technician informed the owner that a pin inside the casing slips out during a percentage of miles. once this happens, the pinion teeth grinds. the van had a "banner kit" installed but the problem has recurred. the consumer has attached copies of invoice

While the vehicle was parked, the consumer noticed that oil was leaking from underneath the vehicle. the consumer called the dealer and was informed that the problem could be with the cooler hose on the transmission and to be safe not to run it with it being dry of oil. *ak *sc *jb

The front strut tower on the driver's side rusted. this could have resulted in the strut tower breaking . if this occurred, the left front suspension could collapse , and would cause the front wheel to lock while driving. the dealership did not know what caused the tower to rust, but it could be caused by road salt. *ak *sc *jb

I have a 2000 dodge caravan and have read the articles claiming the belts to be unsafe. my family has seen this happen we have had our child's seatbelt that holds his carseat in place come unlatched and at that time we couldn't figure out why. now that we have read the articles about it i understand how and i am concerned. not only is it unsafe for my child but i am continuously turning around and checking the seatbelt out of concern also and this means i am taking my eyes off the road. we have e mailed chrysler about this and haven't gotten a response from them and i have talked to the dealership about it and they just say that who ever is writing these articles are blowing it out of proportion. i don't think being concerned about my child safety is going overboard. thank god we haven't had an accident when my child's seatbelt wasn't fastened or anything like that but i do want to have something done about these seatbelts. *jb

I own a dodge caravan 2000. the airbag light came on and the horn stopped working. i asked the service advisor at koon's ford (falls church, va 703.241.1000, dealer code 35-44341) if this was normal and they said this was the first car they had seen with these problems (clockspring). i researched this on the internet and i found that 5% of all 1996~2000 caravan models have had the clockspring replaced because of these problems at the cost of the consumer. i believe this is a safety issue, that the 1996-2000 dodge caravan should be recalled and the clockspring mechanism should be repaired free of charge. please let me know if i can provide further information. thank you for your attention to this important safety problem. *jb

A conversion top was put on my dodge grand caravan. the tv has never been properly secured. while driving, the tv flew out of the top, ripping cords, swinging back and forth, while hanging from a cable. the tv just barely missed the head of my child. no one is taking responsibility for this problem. someone could have been killed. this tv weighs about 10 pounds. the tv bounces around while driving. while bringing this car in for other unrelated service problems, i would always ask them to secure the tv. it was secured by velcro!. *ak

Differential pin broke while driving in a normal manner. pin went through casing of transmisson , and reuined the transmission which otherwise would be fine. vehicle only had 75 ,000 miles and always regularly maintained. *ak

While backing out of the garage brake pedal went to the floor, and vehicle continued to roll until it hit a brick wall and stopped. vehicle was towed to the dealer, and dealer could not resolve the problem.*ak *la

Sporadic electrical issues. sometimes headlights won't come on, when headlights are on, the digital mileage display flashes, heater/defroster keeps blowing a fuse. dealer says they'll look at it but if they don't find it, i have to pay fee even though it's still got the extended warranty.*ak

The stud that fastens the main belt tensioner/ idler broke due to metal fatigue, causing complete lost of power steering and control of the minivan. local dealer parts department told me that he sells a large number of these due to failure and "knew that part number by heart" pls investigate these studs should not fail due to fatigue and the resulting lost of control is extremely dangerous the vehicle in question is a 200 dodge grand caravan. *jb

On feb. 8, 2004, my brother-in-law (also an owner of the car) experienced a problem starting the car. after several tries, the car started running but very roughly. it was decided to drive the car home which was about two miles away. about halfway there, going up a slight incline, smoke came from the engine compartment. my brother-in-law pulled the car off the road and checked under the hood. a fire erupted as soon as the hood was opened. a minute or so later, another fire explosion occurred. the fire department and police arrived and the fire was extinguished. the car had to be towed away. the engine compartment was severly damaged, the dashboard was badly burned and the front windshield had a big hole in it. both the fireman and the policeman commented that it looked like the battery might be involved. i don't know what they meant by that and i am still waiting for a copy of the fire report. we took the car to the dodge dealer here in hawaii and he made the same remark about the battery. the dodge dealer said the job was too big for them to handle and they were going to call another jobber to look at it. i need some advice about what i should do next. this van was converted for handicap use with a hydraulic ramp installed at the factory at the time of purchase. the van is used exclusively for my sister who is totally wheelchair and bed bound, having suffered four strokes on both sides of her body about five years ago. fortunately, she was not in the car at the time of the fire. please give me some advice on what i should do to determine how the fire started and whether or not the manufacturer is at fault for the damage to the van. who can conduct a thorough and valid investigation of the incident? there was no prior indication of any impending failures. in this day and age, how can a car catch on fire without warning? the car may be a total wreck.

Serpentine belt came off without any reason in 2 occassion -- drove over shallow water, puddle rendering vehicle breakdown. the serpentine belt drives water pump, power steering, so the vehicle cannnot be manuevered and gets extremely hot. *ak

Computer controlled transmission in 2000 dodge caravan. this transmission has twice been disconnected from the engine by the computer in traffic. the second time i was in heavy traffic on the middle lane of interstate 20 at weatherford, tx. and had to coast over to the emergency lane. the dodge dealer in weatherford who fixed the transmission told me that there was nothing actually wrong with the transmission, but that the computer disconnected the transmission from the engine because of low pressure in the transmission system to keep the engine from tearing the transmission apart. my problem with that kind of scenario is this: what this should happen when i was passing a vehicle on a two lane high way with on coming traffic at what would have been a safe distance away but all at once i find i am coasting in the wrong lane with traffic coming at me head on? *la

I own a 2000 dodge caravan and am concerned about the safety of the seat belt buckle. they do not meet safety standard ('buckle release mechanism shall be designed to minimize the possibility of accidental release.') and are dangerously prone to unlatching during auto accidents. the buckle, known as the generation 3 (gen3), may have been installed in as many as 16 million chrysler, dodge and jeep vehicles.*ak the buckle has become unlatched many times for my two childrens car seats and i know have to check them everytime i get in the car. two women were killed and a child seriously injured in a roll-over accident dec. 28, 2002, near beeville, texas. this brings the total number of deaths to 17 and serious injuries to 27 in accidents in which gen3 buckles are believed to have unlatched. please issue a recall to have the seatbelt replaced with one that meet standards and will do it's job to help protect my family in an accident.

Ltr fr john harisiadis (il) request an investigation into the defective rotors used on chrysler/dodge minivans, he has experience w/ chrysler/dodge in getting his 2000 dodge grand caravan repaired. consumer feels that dealers are putting defective rotors on vehicle deliberately. vehicle was taken to have a noise checked and was told that the rotors were "pitted and rusted". *ts there was a noise in the brakes. it was diagnosed as the front wheel rotors which were pitted and rusted. the consumer needed a letter from john harisiadis who requested an investigation into defective rotors used on chrysler/dodge mini vans replaced. the rotors deteriorated prematurely which caused a noise when the brakes were applied. *scc *jb

Moving with the military from mo to nv. van is 35 months old but 10000 miles outside warranty (46k). check trans fluid every day prior to driving. fluid was full in denver. arrived in st. george, ut and transmission stopped going in reverse. took it to the dealer. dealer charged $80 to assess the problem. stated transmission needed overhaul. both dealer and chrysler corp told us to drive to las vegas, our destination. chrysler said they would assist with the repair. upon arrival took it to the dealer. dealer told chrysler that vehicle had no trans fluid and should not be a good faith repair. 1) transmission should not fail at 46000 when properly serviced. 2) st. george was wrong for telling us to drive 120 miles in 107 without transmission fluid. 3) or the dealer is lying about the fluid level to force us to pay. chryler states they cannot say one dealer or the other is wrong so they refuse to assist further. additionally, i have been told that i cannot talk to anyone higher in the company than the customer service agents at chrysler.*ak

While in the driveway the vehicle was in park, the key was taken out of the ignition, the vehicle rolled backwards. the owner of the vehicle had gotten back into the vehicle and applied the brakes, then the vehicle was placed into reverse, there was a loud noise. the owner then placed the vehicle into drive and the vehicle immediately accelerated, went into the garage, and hit the washer and dryer. owner stated there was no way to stop the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. *ak *scc *jb

After 38,000 miles the air conditioning compressor unit failed. since i was traveling away from home, i took it to a dodge dealership which stated that the clutch in the ac compressor unit was failing and could cause the serpentine belt to throw if the clutch froze. the service manager stated that this was a "common problem" with the air conditioning compressor unit even with the low mileage. the dealership didn't have a unit in stock on a saturday afternoon and stated that i shouldn't use the ac or defrost on cold and i would be ok to drive home 300 miles. i thanked the dealership for their insight but am concerned since the service manger stated that the ac compressor unit failure is "common" even with 38,000 miles. *nlm

Drive belt/serpentine belt failure because it does not line up with the pulleys.tensioner pulley failed also.failed the first time feb 9 2003 and failed again may 27 2003.ase certified mech. with firestone told us that was all he could do with it until chrysler figures out what to do with it.firestone worked on it both times with a dodge technition present may 27 2003.

Braking system is awful!! i have had the rotors and calibers replaced twice. every time i take it to the dealership they inform me that this is normal for the dodge caravan. they say it is because it has the body of a van but the braking system is designed for that of a midsize car. and because it is front wheel drive all the weight and force rests on the braking system. i find this appalling!! i have never had this many problems with any other vehicle i have owned. as a matter of fact, the first time i had to have this work done, the van was only about 8 months old and the "brake work" did not fall under warranty. the right rotor was replaced as well as the calibers. the last time i had it done the mechanic kept saying, "your calibers are sticking and they affect the rotor and had to replace the one on the left side."

Vehicle was purchased new in 11/99. on 02/28/01 oil warning light illuminated, so consumer went to dealer for service. dealer advised that oil level was sufficient, but light was due to sensor wires being "chewed" possibly by an animal. while driving home the light came on again. took back to dealer who turned off. one day while driving van stalled without warning, then oil light came on. dealer could not diagnose problem, but confirmed that oil level was sufficient. vehicle stalled again. this time took to a different dealer who advised stalling problem is electrical caused by a defective car alarm installed by the first dealer. 2nd dealer disconnected the alarm. while driving home vehicle stalled again with oil light illuminating after stall. *nlm

I have a 2000 dodge caravan that my 2-year-old grandson frequently rides in. his parents are very diligent about installing car seats correctly and securely. since my van contains your defective gen 3 seatbelts, what good is it going to do if the car seat is installed properly? can you guarantee, in writing, your seatbelt will not open and my grandson or other rear seat passengers will not be injured or killed? luckily, there have not been any incidents. does the public have to wait until there are "enough" deaths for you to take care of this problem?

My grandparents own a dodge van. my grandfather was rear-ended at less than 15 mph. the front driver seat broke and fell into a reclining position. it has to be replaced. my concern is mainly for the safety of anyone sitting on the bench seat directly behind the drivers seats. *nlm

Sometimes after my 2000 caravan has sat overnight, it will not go in reverse to back out of the garage. the parking brake will be off and the gear shift will be in reverse but the van won't move. only after repeated attempts at pushing down on the accelerator will the gear pop out and the van finally go into reverse. the van has 35000 + miles and is approaching the end of the warranty. the dealer can not find the problem. what makes this worse is that the very same thing happened after we bought the van new and after three failed attempts by the dealer to figure it out, they put in a new transmission -- after only 900 miles! *jb

My 2000 dodge caravan with only 29,450 miles developed a severe vibration in the steering wheel accompanied by a disconcerting noise when braking. prior to the vibration developing, i noticed the braking power had diminished. upon investigation, i found the brake fluid was below the minimum level and had to add fluid. this improved the brake pedal performance but the stopping power was still subpar. also, whenever i wash the vehicle there has always been a tremendous amount of black brake dust on and around the front wheels which raises environmental concerns for me. i took the car to the dealer who found the front brake pads were worn out and the front rotors were rusted, pitted, and slightly warped. even though the car is only 2 1/2 years old and had only 29,450 miles, daimler chrysler refused any warranty consideration on the brakes. i had to pay nearly $300 for repairs. when i called the daimler chrysler consumer hotline, i was given the impression that this condition was considered "normal." the minivan is driven gently with about 70% of the mileage being in-town driving and about 30% highway driving. on previous vehicles i have owned, the average life of front brakes has been about 85,000 miles. needless to say i am concerned about the safety my family in the vehicle if the brakes are designed with such poor durability. *nlm

Without warning, the transmission began to leak - approximately 1 quart a week - and became difficult to shift. at times it simply failed to go into gear. upon diagnosis of the leak, i was informed that a differential pin had come loose and began destroying the interior of the differential. $1850 to repair on a 3 year old vehicle. according to the mechanic, this is very common on chrysler products.*jb

In november, i had filed lemon law on my 2000 dodge caravan due to the numerous failed attempts to repair leaky fuel injectors. i lost the arbitration because it was determined to be not safety related. but according to nhsta campaign # 00v268000, the probelm was safety realated. so dodge and the state of hawaii (where i lived when lemon law was filed) have lied and i have been driving a fire bomb waiting to happen.

My 2000 dodge caravan has experienced a complete transmission failure at only 57000 miles. the transmission exhibits a "whining" noise which increases with engine rpm, has "bad" shifts and burnt smelling fluid. dealer only gave the response that they would have to "tear it apart" to even offer an estimate. a local transmission shop, in business locally for 45 yrs. was able to estimate a full rebuild and unknown repairs to the transmission front pump assembly at $1800-$2200 to repair the condition. although confronted with the extensive volume of information related to problems with this transmission over the last dozen years, both the dealer and chrysler customer service refused to assume any sort of responsibility for repair. *jb

I own a 2000 dodge caravan which is equipped with gen 3 seatbelts. i have two daughters, ages 1 and 4, who ride in my van daily. on at least three different occasions, one of the seat belts securing my daughters' car seats in has unlatched while i was driving and was i unaware of this until i stopped the vehicle to get them out. luckily, no injuries have occurred yet; however, i cringe to think about what could of or what will happen if i am ever in an accident. the seat belts are going to unlatch and my daughters are going to be unprotected. dodge promotes itself as being "the safest minivan" and a "family minivan" which is why i chose to buy the dodge caravan. how untrue this is. dodge has a serious crisis which must be dealt with immediately

I have a dodge 2000 caravan whose tranmission went out at 45,000 miles -shortly after the expiration of the warranty. the dealership is unwilling to assist me with the repairs, which cost $2,700.00. i heard a humming noise and five minutes later, my van starting slipping gears and left me and my family stranded. there is obviously a major defect in the transmissions of dodge - it is unbelievable that a transmission would fail with such low mileage on it. i have been reading the other complaints on this website and there is obviously a major flaw with the dodge products and their tranmission. they need to be held responsible for this problem and offer assistance to us consumers - after all, if it weren't for us buying this piece of trash, dodge and its employees would be out of business. i will never buy another dodge vehicle.

I had my 2000 dodge caravan in park and running got out for a second and my daughter yelled "ma the van is rolling back wards". i got the door open . the door hit my counsins car mirror. i ran after it to try and stop it. it hit a wagon and slowed down a bit. i was almost in the drivers seat. the next thing i remember being on my stomach facing the rear tire.my aunt told me to lie still because i was pinned under the drivers side door.my aunt told me to lie still so she could move the van ahead to left the door off me. my aunt said that the van was in reverse . my left arm /shoulder, lower back and right butt area hurt. my aunt then called the police . a report was filed .

Why does a 2 year old car with less than 50000 need a $2500 transmission.???? i think it is utterly ridiculous for what you spend on a vehicle today that you can't get 50000 trouble free miles or even three years with no problems. i am a preventative maintenance freak. i always got 125000 to 180000 miles with my gm vehicles and never spent a dime on a transmission let alone a major engine repair. this is totally unacceptable in this day and age. *ak

Brakes wear prematurely under normal driving conditions. two (2) sets of front pads and rotors have been replaced within 33,000 miles. inboard side of pads and rotors were deeply scored. outboard sides were ok. could the brake calibers be defective? dealer has not suggested that the calibers be replaced, which are under warranty.*ak

Transmission failed at 39,000 miles. seems to be manufacturer's defect. required a "soft overhaul" because it would not shift into higher gears. dealership repaired clutch pack seals that were not holding pressure. i feel that a transmission should last more than 39,000 miles. this is the second dodge i have owned with the same problem - seems to be a transmission defect. dealer repaired under extended warranty so i did incur out of pocket expenses. subsequently traded in the caravan and lost a refund of $700 on my extended warranty due to the transmission repairs, so this repair did cost me $800. know two other people with recently (this past week) failed dodge caravan transmissions.

The transmission slips and goes into neutral while driving. this has now happend on four different occasions. at first i thought i just had not engaged drive all the way, but this last time i actually checked and the gear stick was fully engaged in drive - i.e it did not wiggle around. then as i was rounding the corner at a light it all of a sudden started to rev and i realized it was in neutral. i slipped it back into gear and promptly called the dealer for an appointment. when i was called to tell me my car was done, they said that this happens when the transmission fluid is low, and that my fluid was low due a faulty hose causing a leak. however earlier this year when my fluid level was low the check engine light came on and they added fluid then. this time the check engine light did not come on to indiacate that transmission fluids were low. so i am alittle concern about the problem. however since taking it to the dealer, i have not had any problems with it sliping, yet.*ak

I am outraged at daimler chryslers gen-3 seatbelts! it is ridiculous not to recall these seatbelts that can be unlatched so easy. at any one point i have 5 children in my vehicle, 2-3 in child car-seats and now i don't even want to drive it anymore!! i haven't had any incidences of this, but now that i know it can happen, i am scared for my childrens lives! please consider all of the evidence in the situation regarding these useless seat belts and make an honorable judgement. *ak

The ignition assembly needs replacement. the key constantly wont turn. the safety switch to prevent the left rear door from opening when the tank is being filled is defective. the dealership had it removed. i refused replacement. the door would not open when it was jammed.

In a recent rear-end accident, the back of the driver and passenger seats collapsed allowing me to be thrown backward from my seat although i was wearing my seat belt. i received many cuts, bruises and abrasions to my left hand that required 64 stitches, and the repair of 2 lacerated tendons. i also received several scratches on and near my left elbow. my son received a sprained right wrist, bruised stomach, sore neck and back. i have had trouble sleeping and continue to have vivid memories of the accident. i have had no use of my left hand and am in continuous pain, unless i'm heavily medicated. i have been unable to bathe, dress, wash my hair, or prepare meals and perform other household duties without help. i am currently using my father's car because my caravan was my only means of transportation.*ak

I have complained of a snapped steering wheel at 12:00 position. (complaint 631725) replacement wheel (from jan 2001) was snapping and clicking when turning for weeks. on sept 3, 2001 the wheel became loose and now slides 1/2 inch up and down.*ak

(materials analysis laboratory) regarding the testing of my steering wheel that snapped at the 12:00 o'clock position while i was pushing on brake and pulling wheel toward me before impact. the report states "the steering wheel fractured at a location where the aluminum core contains a high amount of porosity and dendritic segregation. the center sixty percent of the cross-section exhibited the porosity. the presence of the porosity and dendritic segregation would highly reduce the strength of the center aluminum section and cause failure to occur at reduced impact loads as compared to a section of the steering wheel which does not contain these material defects." my question is how do i get the x-rays of this steering wheel during its manufactring and how many other defective steering wheels are out there?*ak

When entering a highway my van accelerated so fast and made a roaring noise. i tried to brake but it kept accelerating. i put the gear in neutral (noise even louder) and pulled off the highway. i turned the van off and tried to restart it but it would not start. i made several phone calls and after about 10 minutes i got it to start. this has not happened again but i would like to know what would have caused this to happen. had someone been in front of me there would have been no way for me to have avoided an accident.*ak

While driving van on interstate 95 in connecticut, i fell asleep for a few seconds and drifted onto the shoulder and then hit 9 chainlink fence posts in a row. while this was happing i woke and braced my self for impact by pushing on the brake and pulling on the steering wheel toward me. before impacting the steering wheel snapped at the 12: o'clock position and i bent the two separated toward me like two blunt spears. on impact (the van rode up on steel guide wires and was slammed to a stop by the first steel pole hooking the front axle) the four inches of slack on the seat belt allowed the blunt spear to crash into my chest causing serious injuries. six days in hospital with broken sternum, broken ribs, bleeding, collapsed right lung. i don't know how the steering wheel broke being 52 years old, 190 lbs and not very strong. i am having the wheel analysed by a professional to see if the metal core was flawed or the core was not thick enough. how can i get the specs for this inner core to compare to the findings? if the wheel had not broke, i would have no injuries.*ak

My minivan was parked (in park, shut off, keys out of ignition) in a driveway (somewhat of a steep incline) when it rolled backwards down the driveway, across the road, off a small cliff into a ditch with my 6 yr. old child in the back seat. *ak

I was in line at school when my brakes went out. we took it to the dealership, but they told us that it was the master cylinder. i think now after watching the story on the news that it was the brakes that did not hold. i think all cars need to have this interlock brake on them. i want to know how i can get interlock brakes on my van. if i had of known that my van did not have that on it i would have brought another type van. #even our insurance company said that this was the safety van. please help. *ak

My car stard knocking under the hud on 1-10-2001, tow it in, they told me nothing was wrong. got it back on 1-13-2001 then on 1-20-2001 my transmission almost fell out of the car.*ak

2 tires had bulge in wall. goodyear verified defect & replaced two tires. however, goodyear thus far refuses to replace the other tires and may request that i pay for new tires on a prorated basis. although they admit two tires are defective, they won't admit there is general manufacturing defect or design flaw.*ak (dot number: m6vfhkdr48 tiresize: p215/65r15)

Vehicle was stopped in traffic. vehicle was struck behind by second vehicle at a speed of approximately 30 miles per hour. problem that concerns me is that the driver's side seat broke off, my seat belt was on, so i was not thrown anywhere, but i found myself between the two front seats.

Braking performance less than ideal since purchase. brake rotors found to be out-of round, and pads showed signs of heat damage. replaced at manufacurer's expense. likely manufacuring defect, as vehicle has been driven quite gently, and has less than 12,000 miles.*ak

Metal bar on front passenger seat, gets hot enough from sun, to cause burns on leg. very uncomfortable for passenger. *ak

Rear seat belts on dodge minivans do not have the required (9/1/1995) locking devices needed for proper carseat installation. *ak

Headlights on this vehicle are so poorly designed as to be a hazard. as a 2000 model daimler -chrysler should be required to upgrade the headlights on this vehicle. this is not the first chrysler product i have owned with very poor forward lighting. *ak

The service technician informed consumer that the front brake pads had 45 percent of pad left and the rear brakes had 75 percent left. the front rotors were pitted and rusting from the inside out. *jg

Consumer states another motorist ran a red light, consumer hit the vehicle and the airbags did not deploy, consumer suffered injuries.*jb

The vehicle needed reshiming and bolt kits for the front wheels at 20000 miles. (consumer no longer ownes vehicle) *yh

Consumer stared the vehicle experienced rotor problems.(consumer no longer owns vehicle) *yh

While in motion, brakes failed causing an accident. the dealership repaired the vehicle. soon after repairs were done, the brakes failed again. the dealership replaced the vehicle with a new caravan. same problem is still existing. *jg

The driver of this vehicle lost control, causing a rollover, one of the passengers was sitting in the right half of the middle seat, this is a double seat which does not extend all the way to the door, the seatbelt for the middle seat is anchored to the side of the vehicle, not the seat itself, in this case when the vehicle rolled over, the door opened and the victim was ejected from the vehicle and was killed, this letter is from the chairman of the pima county child fatality review team, the owner of the vehicle is cartemps/alamo rent a car, the driver at the time of the accident is unknown. *slc

Consumer was parked in driveway in the park position, while turning the ignition, still in park, the car took off in reverse down the driveway across the alley and landed in the neighbors pool. *jg

Consumer stated there is a loud humming noise coming from the engine area when going up hills, also the vehicle stalled, dealer replaced the crankshaft position sensor, and consumer was informed that the noise that was being heard was a normal alternator whine which is a characteristic of a 2.4 liter engine, consumer also stated that there is a burning type odor coming from vehicle, dealer unable to duplicate problem.*jb

Consumer stated that fan for heat and air conditioner comes out extremly fast when first turned on.*jb

Consumer stated the rear speaker is blown, dealer stated there was no problem.*jb

Consumer stated the handle on the drivers side door is broken.*jb

Consumer stated the plastic screw that goes behind the seat belt is loose.*jb

Consumer stated there is a noise coming from under carriage of vehicle.*jb

Consumer stated there is a wobble in the front end of vehicle.*jb

Consumer stated airbag light comes on and goes off at times.*jb

Consumer stated there is a knocking noise in the steering when turning hard and when turning and not moving, consumer also complained that there is vibration in the steeing, dealer balanced front tires from a previous complaint about the steering.*jb

Consumer stated transmission will not engage gear, consumer has to step on accelerator more than once to get vehicle to move, dealer could not duplicate the problem, also dealer replaced the power control module on a separate occasion.*jb

The consumer wanted the dealer to install a front end lift because the ground clearance was low causing body damage. *yh

The locking clip on the seat belts in the back do not work and have never worked, police and car seat expert could not install a child safety seat in the center of the middle seat because the seat belt has to stretch too far. *mjs

While traveling, right front goodyear tire had a blowout, a loud bang was heard at first and van jerked into another lane, driver was able to control the van, no injuries.

Consumer heard a knocking under hood, dealer found nothing wrong, a few weeks later consumer heard the knocking again, this time transmission fluid was all over the ground and consumer saw something looking like the transmission hanging from under the vehicle, consumer called tow truck to tow vehicle to dealer, dealer called days later stating they did not know where the vehicle was, consumer is requesting refund of the amount paid for vehicle. *slc

While driving in heavy rain, windshield wipers failed. *slc

Defective seat, consumer is upset that it took 6 months to replace it. *slc

Vehicle has experienced many brake problems, the rotors have been replaced twice and the brake pads have been replaced 3 times, the antilock brakes kick in for reason. *slc

Tires (no model or size) wore out at 5100 miles, possibly due to the front end never keeping proper alignment. *slc

The door latch is broken, the part has been on order since june and has not yet been received. *slc

The cam shaft broke because the engine was improperly bored causing the vehicle to stall out while driving. nlm

Interlock system failed when consurmers child was able to pull the gear selector out of park into drive resulting in the vehicle rolling into a tree. yh

While driving rear suspension noise is present. *mjs

The air bag light appeared on the dashboard and remained on. horn and speed control were operable. consumer took vehicle to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that clock spring needed to be replaced. this vehicle was not on recall. *ak

Consumer states that while driving at 30mph in a frontal collison none of the air bags deployed on impact, causing neck injuries to consumer. nlm
