2000 CHEVROLET Silverado

In August of 2015 while diagnosing poor brake system performance. Extensive rust was discovered in the frame of the truck as well as on all brake components including lines and calipers. 3 out of 4 calipers were not functioning properly. The rear 2 calipers had seized on their sliders due to corrosion even though the rubber slider protection boots were intact. The front 2 calipers had reduced braking ability due to the pistons not properly returning in their bores inside the calipers. The entire brake line system had to be replaced due to extensive rust. Both rear frame crossmembers were completely rotted though. The crossmember supporting the rear passenger side shock absorber had completely rotted though and separated. The crossmember supporting the driver side shock absorber had rotted though where the shock attaches to the shock mounting plates on the crossmember. The gas tank was only being supported by the front support strap. The rear tank support strap had completely rotted through and separated while the front support strap was about 80% rotted through. The corrosion at the rear of the truck involving the rear bumper attachment hardware was so bad that the bumper assembly had to be cut off with a torch. The bumper mounting hardware was rusted solid; the attaching hardware (mounting nuts and bolts) had lost so much material doe to corrosion that the use of wrenches or sockets to remove the hardware was made impossible. Once the mounting brackets were removed, extensive corrosion was found where the mounting brackets had contacted the frame. The corrosion was especially bad at the bottom rail of the c channel frame but only extended about 10″ toward the front of the truck (involving the area that the bumper mounting brackets contacted).

K3500: PAINT PEELING ON MY 2000 WHITE CHEVY 3500 CREW CAB 4X4 LONG BED

I bought a 2000 Chevy Silverado 1500 new. On 17 Oct. 2008 while driving at 35 mph I went to stop for a turning car. The brake pedal went to the floor and the truck would not stop. To avoid hitting the car in front of me, I veered to the right and went into a ditch. After inspection of the vehicle it was noted that every one of the brake lines (pipes shaped as a hook) that are near the ABS box were abnormally corroded and rusted through even though they are supposed to be made from stainless steel. Brake fluid gushed out of one of the pipes when the brakes were applied. This vehicle is stored during winter months (Nov.-Apr) salt and snow are not issues. This is not the first time I have had issues with the brakes on this Chevy. In 2001 I was involved in an accident on a highway in FL, when I tried to stop for the person in front of me. When I applied the brakes the brake pedal stuttered, went to the floor. I hit the car in front of me in which 2 people were injured. I also have a 2001 GMC 4X4 and inspected those brake lines. Those brake lines on the GMC are in very good condition.

K1500: Right rear steel brake line rusted out and ruptured, causing loss of braking.

We are experiencing lots of problems even up to the present time,…most everything was repaired under warranty,but we are still experiencing problems after numerous repairs on the same item,…Our main problems would be the water leak,..and the engine problems,..this last problem was this very month,and after being told to take the truck in by a GMAC rep. we are now stuck paying the shop bill & the 5 day rental car charge,…we feel that this all should be covered being that the current problems we have are the very same problems that were already fixed under warranty! Truck was purchased August 7, 2000. Shortly like,2 months after I purchased the truck it would not start at certain times. It took 3 or 4 times to fix the truck. I almost lemon lawed it. (wish I would of) They fixed it finally. Said it was in the ignition. When it didn

tHIS TRUCK WAS IN AN ACCIDENT SOMETIME BEFORE I BOUGHT IT AND BECAUSE IT WAS NOT REPORTED TO CARFAX THE DEALER REFUSES TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. WHEN I BOUGHT THE TRUCK IT SAID IT WAS NOT IN AN ACCIDENT,BUT IF YOU LOOK AT IT YOU CAN SEE WHERE THEY FIXED THE FRAME THE NOSE WAS TAKEN OFF OF IT THEY CANT FIX THE RIGHT HEADLIGHT.

The truck has intermittently had brake problems since it was new. What will occur is when applying the brakes below 20 mph the pedal will fade to the floor and you will hear the ABS kicking in.The truck will take a very long time to stop. This occurs once a month and has now started to occur weekly ifnot daily. We are afraid to drive the truck.

The problem is the piston slap in the engine. I have a knock at start up and a constant ticking in the engine all the time. GM says that it is normal, but I have a problem believing that. I have had GM products all my life and I have never had a engine do this unless there is something wrong in the engine.

The fuel guage reads empty all the time.The gas pedal gets stuck and you have to really apply presure to get it to move.

put in reverse on hill would take off backwards/dealer said problem taken care of retighten bands/throttle sticks cannot push down with foot. you must stomp on too get release ,to get truck moving. mirrors have quit working switch doesn’t work must adjust by hand./steering problem would not turn in equal directions,dealer said problem taken care of same time as transmission.airbags on passenger side on recall did not receive any information.tailgate is falling off of truck does not latch securley comes open/ now recall on straps that hold up tailgate defective. molding on side coming loose /doors

Our vehicle has many of the same problems that have been reported. The fuel system has supposedly “failed and been fixed”, the computer “needed an update which would fix any problems” which it didn’t and now my husband is getting a shock each time he gets out of the vehicle – IF it runs that day! We have had to take the vehicle in a minimum of once a month and the problem is getting worse – the vehicle wont start on a regular basis, the radio shuts off on its own, when we do take it in they can’t seem to get anything to register on the computer system, the emergency brake doesn’t function properly, when the truck does start it sounds as if a rod is going to come threw the engine, the weather stripping is falling off – again – while driving down the road gages go screwy like the opposite direction of what they are supposed to and all this is normal? The dealership can’t seem to find anything wrong and tells us to drive it until something brakes. I’m afraid that if we do that someone may end up dead because of an accident!! There has been 5 owners including ourselves with no official complaints of anything….I’m OFFICIALLY COMPLAINING!!!! We have only had this vehicle since October 2004! This vehicle may be used but it shouldn’t be acting like this!

On June 8,2003 I was pulling into my driveway in my 2000 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. As I applied the brakes at a speed of about 5-10 mph my ABS system engaged and remained engaged (brake pedal pulsating) for a distance of approximately 20 feet as I pushed with both feet on the brake pedal trying to get my truck to stop before it went over a 4 feet high retaining wall. It would not stop and I drove over the wall and flipped onto my roof. My truck was a total loss. This defective ABS system engaged for no reason whatsoever. The blacktop was completely dry, no gravel on it, and no uneven surfaces or ripples.

Minor thing- but, it’s pretty obvious that we’re not the only GM owners with this problem. At least one of the running lights will be “out” at any given time. We’ve replaced bulbs three times only for the replacement or the other side to go out. Chev. dealer charges about $8.00 per heavy duty bulb which is not different from reg. bulb. It’s bad when you’re driving and when you meet a truck around the year 2000 and one running light is out, you automatically know that when you get close enough to see the make of the vehicle, you’ll already know that it will be Chev. or GMC. I believe that at least 90% of vehicles I meet on the road with a light not burning will be GM product. I’ve complained before but rec’d no acknowledment. Chev. dealer told us that the heavy duty bulb would take care of the problem. Yeah! Right! Not so.

Loud noise from steering during low speed turning, such as parking. I bought it used from dealer who sold similar trucks new. First they said they couldn’t reproduce. Then they lubricated the steering column.Also, vibration at highway speeds.And interior odor in summer.

Intermediate steering shaft replaced due to worn out and sloppy u-joint. Very noisy but more concerned about breakage and loss of control.

I was pulling into a parking space and I lightly applied the breaks and the ABS started shuttering yet I was not on a wet or icy surface, it was dry and the more pressure I applied to the brakes It would not stop the truck fast enough, an I hit a Parking Lot Poll with my right side fender / bumper going home that day It happened on the road several times I almost hit cars and in a school zone a child ran infront of me and I could not stop, The Brakes were overhauled last year by a chevy dealer in florida so the brakes are fine. I heard on the new about an ABS malfunction recall by chevy for this EXACT Problem but the Chevy dealer will not correct it since I do not live in the states affected by the recall yet surrounding states are affected (Maryland and Washington DC) I live in Northern Virginia. Since almost hitting the Child I WILL NOT DRIVE THIS TRUCK…..

I have had to replace the transmission 3 times in the past 2 1/2 years. At 49700, 99800,99850 and now its acting up again.

I have had Problems with the abs brakes on this vehicle engaging at low speeds since the first 6 months of ownership. This has been an on going problem with the brakes and have heard every dealer excuse known to man. Now they have a recall. I am scheduled at the dealer again next week. The dealer replaced the rotors,calipers and ABS sensors at a hefty 567.00 dollars and the issue is back again.

I HAVE HAD 2 2000 SILVERADO AND BOTH WIND SHIELD WIPERS HAVE QUIT WORKING. ARE THEIR ANY OTHER KNOWN PROBLEMS THAN THE MOTOR. THANKS

I bought this vehicle used at 40,478. Transmission failed shortly after I purchased it. It failed again at about 49,000 and again at 49,300. It is currently in the shop again. I have had this vehicle in the shop more than I was able to drive it.

Driving down road and lost power steering and power brakes. Even after falure, no warning lights or malfunction codes are present. Truck is a 3/4 ton with hydroboost assist for steering and brakes.

Dealer charged $208.58 each to replace 2 rotors and $109.90 for a brake pad kit. Item priced respectively for $26.00/rotor and $16.00/pads from Advanced Auto and $55.99/rotor $63.49/pads from a local parts store. Dealer justified such cost as GM manufactured hence higher quality. Both second costs listed offered lifetime guarantee. NOTE: multiple staff at dealership – FX CAPRARA CHEVROLET-OLDS-BUICK INC, 3326 Maple Ave, Pulaski, NY 13142, 315 298 5181, Ron McNitt – Service Manager -encouraged filing of formal complaint as this problem typically presents from vehicles with but 11,000 miles.

Brakes Will Not Stop Vehicle in an Emergency Situation

Brakes fail at low speed, try to go into anti-lock. Changed complete brakes,rotors,pads etc. on all four(4) wheels of the vehicle. Problem still exists. Scheduled for recheck September 30/03 for review of hoses and lines also will put on computor for fault readings. Truck crashed into a wood pile at our summer home no personnal injuries but some paint scratching. Disconnected the fuse for the anti-lock brakes had no problem with brakes failing just that abs light and hand brake light stayed on all the time. Put the fuse back in and problem still exists this is why it will be rechecked September 30/03 to read faults as they are still failing. Very scarey when all of a sudden no brakes at low speed.

ACCELERATOR STICKS AT TAKE OFF. THE DEALER SAID IT COULD COST AT LEAST $100.00 TO FIX. I HAVEN\’T FIXED IT YET. MY MOM\’S TRUCK, SAME MAKE AND MODEL, AND MY BROTHERS TRUCK, SAME MAKE, ALL DID THE SAME THING.

1. I went in to Bill Heard Chevrolet in Buford, GA (dealer) for parking brakes not working (pedal going to floor). I thought it just needed tightened up/ adjusted. I was advised that rear seal at axle had failed, and ruined the entire rear parking brake assembly and axle bearing on one side- had to replace all at great cost. brakes fixed, and was advised that the parkiing brake is designed as “transmission assist” brake, not emergency brakes. This truck is used as daily driver, not for hard service I have a company car to go to/frm. work.2. I have had a rattle from under the truck since I bought it. dealer has never been able to trace it down.3. There has been a slight knocking sound in the engine since about 5,000.00 miles. Dealer said “they all do that”.

Paint peeled off complete in several spots, especially the roof and the hood.

Chevy C1500 Silverado. Upper clutch pedal bracket that holds clutch master cylinder broke out. I nearly KILLED someone walking in front of my truck. This needs investigated !! I cannot believe that cylinder is held in place by less than 1/8” plastic. Needs to be made out of metal.

A Chevrolet dealer, a reputable service center, and City Muffler all three specified the catalytic converters should be replaced to turn off the "Service Engine Soon" light. City Muffler replaced them with aftermarket parts that did not meet EPA or GMC OEM specifications. City Muffler refused to warranty their work or material during eight return visits supported by EPA requirements and guidelines. The service center replaced the converters with GBC parts costing me another $739.90. The SES light stayed off.

I was in a head on collision and received a compound fracture to my right femur bone, 2 black eyes and fractured ribs due to the inactivation of the drivers and passenger airbag modules, also the steering wheel bent resembling an airplane wheel. my wife checked the internet after the incident and found there was a recall for the airbag module on the year of my 2000 chevrolet silverado truck. we were never notified of this before the incident, but are currently receiving updates today. do not understand why we were never notified of this. the truck is now in a storage yard and we are awaiting the response from the insurance adjustor.

When applying the brakes, the vehicle's brake pedal vibrates and goes to the floor. the driver has to wait for brake pedal to lift back up then press again to stop. dealer is not able to duplicate. please describe further.

Took vehical to get inspected shop said vehical is unsafe to drive and refused to inspect under futher inseption there is exsesive rust on frame that is not normal wear and tear gm needs to step up like toyota did and replace these frames pls look in to this . this was my only vehical and now i dont have one to drive and cant afford to buy a new one

"dash boards".... my 2000 chevrolet silverado dashboard is cracking and crumbling everyday. it is to the point now that i am adding duck tape just to keep it up. chevrolet should take responsibility for this and repair my dashboard and issue a recall. this problem began 1 year ago, and i have never been in any accident with this truck.

I was having the exhaust changed when i was notified that one of the cross members for the frame had rusted completely through and needed to be repaired. it has been repaired, but i was informed that excessive rust is in various locations on the rear of the frame and will need to be watched closely. keep in mind that these cross members support the fuel tank and if one would break, it looks like it could cassette fuel tank to fall off. the truck has 100,500 miles on it, which is not excessive for the year. the truck spent most of its life in michigan, but now resides in illinois. i have read several forums having the same complaints for the 99-2007 model year vehicles. there are several holes placed on these cross members by the manufacturer that allow moisture in, with no place for the moisture to go once it is place. i am sure there is also a lack of proper paint application and even poor steel that is likely causing the issue. just as toyota has done, chevy should offer a recall for excessive rust on the frame. the toyota tundra recall offers a new frame for any tundra with a rust hole 10mm or larger. why isn't the nhtsa investigating this further? this a serious safety concern and also considerably lowers the value of the vehicle. gm and chevy need to be held accountable for their decisions when designing and manufacturing these vehicles, just as toyota took accountability for their decisions.

As i attempted to brake to a stop on dry pavement, the brake pedal suddenly stiffened,preventing me from using the pedal to come to a controlled stop. fortunately, i was going slow at the time and was in a parking lot, so was able to steer away from colliding with a parked car.. from all that i read ,the root cause of this problem involves the abs system. about 3 years ago, i had the brake lines completely replaced with a better grade than came with the truck. i did this because, while the truck is going on 15 years, the main components appear to have several more years. but not with this sort of fundamental safety issue. i'm angry that gm has not had to recall my truck for this obvious safety flaw in the brake system.

The abs braking system goes stiff at low speeds. i have to jam on the brakes extremely hard in order for them to stop, the brakes eventually will stop after a 3 to five more feet.the abs braking system is extremely dangerous and serves no purpose.the vehicle works better after disabling the abs brake system.please recall all chevy silverados and tahoes due to abs braking system issues.

When returning home my brakes failed when entering my driveway causing me to strike a tree. there was minor damage to the grill of my vehicle. the cause was a ruptured brake line. there was no warning of the loss of brakes. *tr

As i was topping the curve of an entrance ramp, i felt the rear of the truck lose traction on the wet asphalt and the tail started to move. i let off the gas pedal to gain control, and the engine continued to propel the truck as if the gas pedal was stuck. this caused the rear of the truck to continue around and slammed the front of the truck into a guard rail and finally came to a stop with truck parallel to guard rail and facing in the opposite direction of traffic. i was holding the brakes as soon as i realized the truck was out of control. if not for the guard rail, my family and i would have been propelled over a steep embankment with fatal results. this is the first time i've had this occur on this vehicle since i purchased it in 2001. this is a major safety issue. *tr

Driving on 4 lane business road coming to a red light pushed on brakes pedal went to floor and no brakes had to swerve into other lane to keep from hitting car in front of me ran red light downshifted into low gear and began rubbing tires on curb until i came to a stop.checked brake fluid level was empty looked under truck and brake line had rusted through under drivers door.walked 2 blocks to parts store and brought brake fluid filled master cylinder pumped brakes still had no brakes,i could not understand how one broken line left me with no brakes, i thought they were supposed two systems front and rear ? i have several vintage trucks from 67-72 era all still have original brake lines, i think gm skimped on materials and left us with a safety issue. *tr

Nhtsa campaign id number: 05v379000 nhtsa action number: pe05020 past recall fix by general motors was done incorrectly. front sensors for the abs system become dirty because of bad seals in the hub assembly.original fix only provided maintenance to the problem not a permanent fix. at low speeds the abs system kicks in when you put your foot on the brake pedal. *tr

While coming to a stop light going about 25 mile an hour i pressed on the brake pedal and it felt mushy then went all the way to the floor finally stopping before entering a highway with oncoming traffic traveling at 50 miles per hour. turned around and went home noticed brake fluid coming out under the drivers door. all the lines corroded just a few more feet to stop and it could have been very bad. *tr

Without any warning i was backing up and brake pedal went to floor,the curb stop the truck.truck was in chevy dealer service for a complete rear brake job,pad kit,rotor,and parking brake kit in 2013 which included a multi-point inspection, also in 2009,2012. at no time verbally or written on my receipts were brake lines needed replacing. put truck in shop to have brake line replace by dealer recommendation and when i picked truck up 10/25/2014 found they didn't replace rusted brake line to rear brakes. *tr

I pressed on the brakes and felt one set blow out, pressed harder to compensate and felt the remaining set blow out. the pedal then went to the floor resulting in a total loss of braking. the brake light did not come on (no reason for it to?). luckily i had a trailer connected which had working electric brakes and i was able to manually activate those brakes. later that day while moving the vehicle in my yard, i used the emergency brake which immediately failed. inspection of the brake lines revealed massive corrosion on all of the lines and will require complete replacement. inspection of the emergency brake revealed the line was coated in plastic except in some areas. those areas were totally corroded resulting in the cable braking in one of those areas. so in one pedal action, both front and back brakes catastrophically failed. and in the same day, all 3 systems failed. the manufacturer was notified of the issue and they requested that the vehicle be towed in and have a diagnostic test run (at the vehicle owners expense), however chevrolet had no program in place and would not cover any of the repairs no matter what the outcome of the diagnostic test... i opted to repair all the break lines myself to avoid the the extra cost of a tow and diagnostic test that would have no outcome other than a report to chevrolet at a large expense to me. approximate failure mileage was 190,000 miles.

All gauges erratic function. never know when i run out of fuel. only can reactive fuel reading, some of the time is to be on the road, take foot off of accelerator, drop into neutral and drop it back into drive; fuel gauge may read for a while. hazard warning switch will not cancel to the home position and if it does cancel the relay keeps clicking. turn signal remains unaffected for signaling a turn. *tr

Brake pedal went to the floor, the vehicle did finally stop. drove carefully home about 2 miles. i found a steel brake line that had rusted through and failed. brake fluid was all over the under side of the truck. *tr

When braking the driver's seat moves slightly as though the mounting bolts or slider bolts were loose. i checked the mounting and slider bolts and they are tight, but the problem occurs every time i use the brake pedal. this will result in a virginia state vehicle safety inspection failure because a seat must be secure or it constitutes a danger. although the vehicle is a 2000 chevy silverado 1500 series lt extended cab it only has 13,000 miles on it. therefore, it isn't driven much indicating to me that the condition resulted from defective material used in the manufacturing of the seat or improper manufacturing itself. i believe that if it were from improper manufacturing as opposed to defective materials then the problem would have shown up at a much earlier date regardless of the low mileage. therefore, based on the tight bolts that i checked and the low mileage eliminating the consideration of normal wear and tear i would have to assume that this development is from the use of inferior quality material in the construction of these seats resulting in potential endangerment. vin [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

I approaching a stop light at an intersection and the brake pedal went to the floor with little to no stopping power.i was forced to drive off the road into a dirt embankment.i was lucky it was 5:45am and light traffic as i would have hit any vehicle if there was one stopped in front of me.the cause of the loss of brakes was rusted front brake line that burst without warning.these trucks should be recalled as my mechanic has repaired many chevy/gmc trucks of this vintage with the same rusted brake line problems. *js

The spare tire hoist cable broke, and the spare tire dropped onto the highway. it bounced at least 10 feet in the air, narrowly missing cars driving the opposite direction. luckily it rolled to the shoulder without hitting anything. i had never used the spare, nor lowered the hoist mechanism. this tire weighs ~75 pounds and could have easily killed a passing motorist. *js

Brake line blew under normal driving conditions. i have recently been advised that all of my lines need replaced due to rust and could possibly blow unexpectedly. i have been quoted about $500 for parts and up to $800 for labor depending on the difficulty. i do not live in an area with a lot of salt applied to the roads. i am the original owner. *tr

Brake line rusted through directly beneath the driver's side frame near the abs pump/module. stream of fluid shooting out. further inspection showed all lines corroded, covered in rust...even in locations where exposure to moisture and salt does not occur. does not make sense..my wife's ford escape is close to same year, not a speck of rust...must be bad material or bad routing...or better material and protection from elements on escape...is there a recall for this? ford recalled our escape recently to protect against rust out of steering components? will gm do the same for brakes? my 2003 suburban has same issue...every line covered in rust...regardless of location...but no burst yet...crossing fingers it is still safe to drive...how much rust is ok to have on my lines? has gm said ? *tr

A brake line burst due to rust and corrosion, almost resulting in a rear end crash. i had to take the truck into the berm to avoid the crash. after inspection all the brake lines were corroded and rusty and had to be replaced. also found that the fuel lines were also rusted, corroded and leaking. they also had to be replaced. *tr

Our chevy silverado truck, 2000 make of year, has ignition issues. it is hard to get the key to turn in the ignition, requiring us to either jiggle the ignition plate or turn the key to the other side and insert it that way. we have noticed that we can take the key out of the ignition and the engine will continue to run. we have asked our gm dealership in the past about repairs, and were told it would cost us $2000 to fix. we weren't too concerned about it until we saw the controversy with the chevy cobalt (a vehicle we also own), and now wonder if the chevy silverado can also be added to this list of recalls or repairs. our cobalt does have the same issue as the others, and we have asked our daughter, who drives it in new hampshire, to take it in to get the modification. *js

I was traveling down a road at 20 mph and went to apply my brakes as we were approaching a red light. the brake pedal went right to the floor without warning and i was involved in a 4 car accident caused by a total brake system failure. the vehicle was towed to the garage and a majority of the brake lines had to be replaced due to rusting. the brake lines rusted at the intersection to the brake module mid vehicle so when the front lines failed, the pressure boost to the rear lines caused them to also fail. so the concept of dual brake systems was defeated due to a single point failure problem. also, the brake fluid saturated the rear brake rotors so the emergency brake was non functional. the vehicle was a 2000 silverado which was a $35000 vehicle where the brake lines lasted 7 years. i also own a 1987 s-10 pickup used in the same environment and the brake lines do not exhibit the corrosion seen on my silverado brake lines. obviously gm used substandard brake lines in the construction of the 2000 silverado. i own two vehicles made by the same company and used in the same environment. therefore, it is not an environmental issue that causes the brake line failure. the official comment from gm that rusted brake lines are not a safety issue because the vehicle can be stopped with a dual braking system is incorrect because when the rusted brake lines fail, both braking systems fail and the vehicle cannot be stopped safely. *tr

Upon backing up to leave a parking lot, it was immediately apparent there was a loss of brake pedal, i.e. the brake pedal went to the floor. there was enough brake left to come to a stop and to drive to the nearest repair shop, but definitely not safe to continue driving beyond that. there was no indication prior that the brakes were failing. after inspection the repair shop estimated that at least 3 of the brake lines rusted through. *tr

On the expressway on the way from work traveling approx. 50 mph when traffic stopped. i hit the brake pedal and it went to the floor, thank god there was enough distance between cars that i pumped the pedal and downshifted to stop the car. when i had a chance to look for the cause i found out that it was the metal brake line had rusted out ( pin hole) . the chevy dealer indicated the gm doesn't make this line so i have to have line bent by a garage. *tr

The flex couplers that attach the hard brake lines to the abs module are rusted to the point they are leaking now. besides the brake lines, the truck is rust free. this is a 100% safety issue that gm still continues to ignore. *tr

This incident has occurred 3 consecutive years. september 2011, 2012, & 2013. all incidents happened driving downhill on my address road. the brakes/brake lines failed/gave out without any warning in all incidents. brake pedal went completely to floor in all incidents. i was able to shift down in gear all times but luckily i was driving slower & there were no other vehicles in front/behind me. it was difficult to get truck stopped at bottom of hill. i have had 2 repairs to damaged brake lines & now headed for a third at a dealership. *tr

Started truck. put foot on brake pedal. felt usual resistance at brake pedal. put truck in drive. brake pedal went to floor. brakes had a total failure. truck rolled across street while i was shifting truck to neutral and trying to stop. steel brake pipes were not leaking before i started the truck. steel brake pipes have at least 2 leaks in the pipes now. 1 leak is in the rear brake supply (steel) pipe between the master cylinder and the abs module. the other leak is in a steel brake pipe near the abs module. brakes worked fine, with no leaks, when i had driven the truck a few days before. failure was sudden and total. i had no brakes as soon as the failure occurred.

Brake line from abs control to rear wheels, line ruptured due to corrosion. thankfully i was backing up at a slow speed, brake pedal went to floor as i applied brakes, losing all brake fluid. i replaced the rear section of brake line but need a total brake line replacement but couldn't afford it then and still can't afford to have it done, luckily i don't have to drive the truck for everyday use. had i been pulling the boat trailer, my enclosed trailer, or just traveling at highway speeds i don't think i would have been able to stop. i have since learned many other suv and light trucks made by gm in the 1999 to 2006 model years have similar brake line corrosion issues.

Just north of columbia, sc merging onto i-20, traffic suddenly slowed ahead. i applied the brakes and the brake pedal went to the floor. we managed to slow, utilizing emergency braking and gearing to avoid a crash. after looking at the vehicle, we discovered the rear left brake line had ruptured. we are having it repaired at a gm dealership. the reported diagnosis is brake line corrosion. the dealership is replacing the brake line and purging the brake system to repair the issue.

I live in connecticut and i have a 2000 chevy silverado k1500 ext cab 5.3l truck with 198000+ miles on it. the truck has been garaged just about its whole life since i bought it brand new. last week my wife was driving the truck to the store. while coming to a stop sign just down the street the brakes failed. fortunately she was coming to a stop and wasn't going fast with no one in front of her. she walked back to the house and i went down to find that a brake line had busted behind the drivers wheel on the frame rail before it goes over the frame to the abs module. i had the truck towed back to my house and put in the garage to inspect it. i am amazed on how much that all of the brake lines are rusted. some areas of the line when i touched it just fell apart in my hands. i have been hearing that just about everyone i know who owns 1999-2003 chevy trucks are having brake line failing due to cheap steel rusted lines. while i was under the truck i also noticed that one of the cross members that support the right rear shock plus the gas tank is supported off of is rusted with only half a tube left. plus just about all of my gas lines have serious rust on them. my other issue is that the rocker panels on both sides of the cab are rusted threw to a point that you can stick your hand in them. when is chevy going to get off their butt and do something about this. the brake lines, fuel lines & cross member corrosion are safety issues that should be dealt with before people get hurt or worst killed. *tr

Was driving my 2000 1500 and had brake failure. upon inspection not only did i find extensive rust on lines but my rear shackles are rotting through and some places on the frame. started to think there no way this should not be happening to this truck. only 140000 miles this has got to be a case of poor quality. not only is this a safety issue and should be checked on but it is an expensive fix. i did slide off the road but i came to a safe stop in a field luckily my e-brake worked and nobody else was around. could you please investigate this and take care of it. chevrolet should stand by their product but they don't care about us, they just want their money. also there is a lot of rust on body of truck, like actual holes in bedside and passenger side rocker panel is bad. thank you for your time and consideration ,sincerely chevy truck owner:( *tr

My wife and i drove our truck to town about 10 miles. i noticed the brake pedal felt spongy so we finished our business and drove home, when we pulled into the drive the brake pedal went to the floor. but we were able to get it stopped. i checked the fluid level and it was empty so i put some fluid in and ask my wife to push brake pedal as i looked around. i saw brake fluid spraying out from under the cab on the drivers side. i got under it and saw the brake lines were leaking and they were really rusted. it looked liked the brake line ruptured due to corrosion. *tr

Found a puddle of brake fluid on the driveway below the driver's side door. inspection revealed that the brake lines that run along the frame rail below the driver's side door are completely rusted/corroded, and are leaking brake fluid. vehicle is unsafe to drive until repaired. this is an extremely serious safety issue, and needs to be addressed immediately. *tr

During a utah state safety inspection last year it was found that 3 of the 12 exhaust manifold bolts were broken on my 6.0l engine. the bolt heads were completely broken off/missing. the broken bolts allow the exhaust manifolds to leak causing problems with emissions. if left undetected this problem can cause the catalytic converter to fail. just to have the bolts repaired is a very expensive >$500 repair that could have been averted by having these faulty bolts changed out early on. once the bolts are broken they have to be extracted which is very difficult due to the thermal deformation and corrosion. two of the bolts were in the rear most holes which have very limited access. i have not received any notices from the manufacturer in regards to this problem. i have owned this truck since it was new. i would like to request a recall from the manufacturer due to the fact that it causes emissions problems and increases pollution. if you consider how many of these trucks, tahoes, and suburbans have been on the road since 1999, the increase in pollution is considerable. *tr

The brake lines failed on my silverado and i completely lost braking. with a dual master cylinder system this is usually not possible. on these trucks the lines are spring covered plain steel lines that are packed tight together next to the frame before they enter the antilock brake controller, which is under the floor on the drivers side of the truck. the way the lines are constructed and routed leads to contaminates being trapped in the area around the lines causing them to prematurely rust out. the fact that both the front and rear lines and routed together to the middle of the vehicle eliminates the safety benefits of the dual master cylinder / front and rear systems that provided an additional safety factor on older vehicles. in my case the front and rear lines failed at the same point and at the same time. additionally on inspecting my truck the hardware that holds the emergency brake pads in place had also rusted away and caused the emergency brake lining to set askew in the rotor causing it to get worn down. in an emergency situation you may not be able to count on the emergency brake to operate as well. all in all a really poor designed system that should be recalled and fixed before lives are lost. *tr

I took my 1500 chevy pick-up to a gm dealer in ri,( hurd gmc) after i smelled gasoline when driving, the service dept informed me that the fuel line is rotted (at or near the fuel filter)and leaking gasoline near the exhaust, they told me not to drive the truck, for fear of a fire. they also noted that the brake lines the run down the drivers side frame rail are also rotted . i have repaired other brake lines in the front,last year, because of leaking brake fluid, the gm dealer quoted me a price of around $2000.00 to replace the entire fuel line from the tank to the injectors. which included replacement of all rotted brake lines. i have parked the truck for fear of a fire, or possible loss of brakes. the truck is not a rusted mess underneath, i took care not to drive on salty roads, these lines are made of raw steel, i believe if they were stainless steel, i would not be in this mess. what does one do with a perfectly good truck, but can't drive it for fear of fire or crash ??? *tr

While stopping in my driveway in front of my garage, the brake pedal went all the way to the floor with loss of braking. a portion of the brakeline was replaced by a local mechanic. he reported a line leading to the rear brakes had failed at the "t" on the rear axle and also in the area of the drivers side door. after driving approximately 90 miles, another brakeline failure occurred while driving on the highway. i was able to stop the truck safely without incident, but with very little braking power. another portion of brakeline was replaced. as a result of the 2 incidents, all brake lines are in the process of being replaced. *tr

Rear fuel tank strap was rusty. broke off going down the road at 55 mph. did not cause an accident.

Noticed fuel tank strap hanging from underneath vehicle. upon inspection of fuel tank strap noticed that the strap had rusted & separated about four inches from the bolt mounting location. fuel tank did not fall to the ground but probably would have if i kept driving it. noticed that gm uses a rubberized coating on the strap. water & moisture were able to migrate into the top area of the coating and sit between the rubber coating and the strap & not have any exit point. this caused a moist environment and over time accelerated rust/corrosion between the rubber coating & the steel strap. poor design & serious safety issue. pictures are available (can't copy into this form). multiple similar complaints found on the internet.

As i was approaching an intersection i applied the brakes and shortly thereafter the pedal went to the floor. at the time it seemed that i had a complete loss of braking and had to swerve to the side to avoid colliding with the vehicle in front of me. after i came to a complete stop and assessed the situation, i realized i had very limited braking, about 10%, and was able to get the vehicle home (1/2 mile or so and almost no traffic). i parked the vehicle in my driveway and noticed a puddle of brake fluid on the driveway under the junction of the cab to the bed. i felt the brake line and determined that it had totally failed and was now in two pieces. i visually inspected the rest of the brake lines and determined they were all in a similar condition and extremely corroded and any of them could fail at any time. i had three of my children with me at the time and was very grateful that it wasn't worse than it was. no one was injured and no damage to other vehicles or property occurred, but it very easily could have. this is a serious safety concern and after searching the internet i know this is not an isolated incident.

The consumer found leaking brake fluid beneath the driver's door. a brake line ruptured due to rusting. this represented a severe and immediate safety hazzard. the silverado truck was taken to the local chevy dealer. the dealer found front brake lines rusted and one rupturted on lh side of vehicle. rear brake lines rusted but not as bad. the dealer fabricated and flared new brake lines to the front brake components. they also cleaned out brake valves and hoses. the system was bled. the dealer stated that the brake line rupture was not due to abuse. the chevrolet manufacturer was contacted at 1-800-222-1020, gm customer assistance. chevrolet refused to compensate for repairs citing age and mileage.

The consumer states he discovered leaking brake fluid from the bundle of brake lines beneath the driver side door. the chevy truck was taken to the local chevrolet dealer. the dealer found the brake lines were rusted. one had corroded to the point of rupture causing fluid to leak. brake components were found to be rusted. the dealer determined that the brake system failure was not due to excessive use or abuse the manufacturer was contacted. there is no recall currently for this defect. the chevrolet company representative refused further assistance citing the age and mileage of the vehicle. the front lines from the master cylinder to the abs unit as well as from the abs unit to the two front calipers were replaced. the brake bleeding values and hoses were cleaned. the system was bled.

I was backing my truck up to park it in yard, and hit the brakes and it went to the floor. after investigating i found a hole in the line to the left rear wheel. the hole was caused by a wire harness rubbing on the brake line. at the same time of looking at the problem i discovered the brake line were very badly rusted. any way the wire harness had to be put there at the factory because i have never messed with it and no one else has either. i feel this should have been caught at the inspection area on the assembly line. but now i have to pay to have it fixed do to the poor workmanship by the factory. and when i went to move the truck to my barn the emergency brake did not hold very well, yeah more problems.

On a snowy day going back home for lunch, i tried to stop at a 4 way stop but it took a little bit longer than i expected. first i thought it was because of the abs engagement and road condition. but i felt something unusual, so i pressed the brake pedal after leaving the 4way stop around 30mph. then the pedal started loosing back pressure and it went down to the floor before it stopped. i could come back home with lower gear down shifting and parking brake. when i checked the bottom of the vehicle, i found fluid leakage around the brake line on the floor.

Fuel sensor causing fuel gauge to act erratic. have to use trip meter to keep up with mileage so i won't run out of gas again! gauge may show empty and cause low fuel light to come on when there is a full tank- to showing half full when it is actually empty.

2000 chevrolet silverado - sudden brake line failure as driver was approaching intersection, brake pedal went to the floor and there was no slowing action whatsoever. driver was able to limp vehicle home using emergency brake. upon inspection, i discovered that all brake lines on the vehicle were badly corroded and the abs to rear axle chassis brake line had ruptured due to excessive corrosion. while examining the line that failed, i observed that all steel lines on the vehicle were corroded very badly and were likely to fail at any time. when i asked a mechanic about this issue, i was told it was a common problem and that i should plan to replace all the brake lines on the vehicle soon to help prevent another failure. a vehicle that is only 10 years old should not have metal brake line failure due to corrosion - clearly the manufacturer used an inferior product that has made the vehicle unsafe to drivers as the vehicle ages. what i really don't understand is why automakers are not required to use a stainless grade steel or some other material that is not prone to corrosion/failure when it is for such a critical system such as the braking system. at least a requirement that if the pedal hits the bottom, as would occur with line failure, that it activates a non-hydraulic mechanical system that doesn't rely on fancy electronics or hydraulics would be a better safeguard than hoping that the driver is able to remember the parking brake when he/she has seconds before a collision. i removed the failed brake line and replaced it with a new steel line. i also sprayed the line with a clearcoat paint in an attempt to preserve the replacement line. i then examined the other lines and confirmed that they look solid (for now); but noted that they are more extremely corroded than the brake lines on my 1999 mercury cougar or 1985 toyota mr2. *tr

I recently bought a 2000 chevrolet silverado z71 extended cab. a few days after i purchased the truck i was in traffic at speeds ranging between 2-10 mph. almost everytime i pressed the brakes to come to a stop the abs system would kick in and my truck would not stop for a few extra feet almost causing me to rear end the vehicle in front of me. now i contacted chevy/gm and they said there is a recall for the problem but unfortunately my truck under the vin # i gave them did not qualify for the recall. they said i'm sorry but you'll have to get it fixed on your own. i was shocked at the response they gave me. i cant afford the close to $1000 repair and i still have to use the truck for work, but i know i won't buy another gm and i guess by the time the recall gets extended to my truck someone will either get hurt or killed do to gm not stepping up and taking no responsibility. ever since then it happens often enough where im scared. *tr

The abs failed in my truck, causing me to hit a trailer parked in my driveway. while gm has already "repaired" this under a previous recall, their "repair" obviously doesn't work. they were unresponsive about my complaint, since my truck had already been "repaired". if someone would have been walking in front of my truck when the brakes failed, i would have killed them. it is one thing to have the radio quit working, it is an entirely different thing to have the brakes totally fail. gm needs to do something about this besides cleaning a couple sensors. there were no warning lights, no indication whatsoever of the impending failure. i backed up and the brakes worked fine. still no warning lights. i spoke with the dealership and their answer was "there isn't anything we can test for this intermittent problem. we can try to get it to fail and go from there". i now have a 6000 lb projectile that i have no idea if it is going to stop or not. i removed the abs fuse until i can figure out what to do with this unreliable product. *nm

We had two 2000 year model chevolet silverado truck we got rid of one because the gas gauge when filled up .the law fuel light comes on and it would cost alot to have fixed, i think it should be the factory's responceablity to replace this.i have talked to alot of people who has the same problem with there 2000 model chevy silverado trucks.what can be done? *nm

Dt*: updated 10/25/2006 - everytime the vehicle was started and the engine was cold, it made a knocking noise, which continued until the engine warmed up. there were no warning signs prior to the incident. the vehicle was taken tot he service dealer who said the noise was carbon build-up on the piston. the dealer tried running cleaner into the engine twice but the noise was still there. the dealer said it was piston slap making the noise and that it was ok to drive. *nm

I own a 2000 chevy silverado 4x4. i have had a problem with the brakes for about two years. the anti-lock brake computer does not function properly all the time. i can loose the brakes at any time. i have talked to a few other owners of the same style truck and they have had similar problems. i have had the master cylinder replaced, new brakes installed, and the most recent recall to clean the brake cylinder(?) cleaned by a chevy dealer completed. the problem still existed. it may have been 2-3 weeks in-between failures. what happens is the brake pedal goes to the floor with minimum stopping power. that's exactly what happened this last time but unfortunately this time i didn't have enough road to stop on and ran into a tree. damages, according to the body shop, are going to be between $3000-$4000 dollars. the truck is in the repair shop at this time and i will have the anti-lock brake computer replaced. i know for a fact this is the cause of my accident. i was hoping for a recall from chevrolet to avoid the expensive repair. i will save the old unit along with all the repair bills and future increases in my insurance premiums and hope that somewhere in the future the truck does get a recall. i will then in turn hold chevrolet responsible for all bills incurred. *jb

I own a 2000 chevy silverado. the upper intermediate steering shaft is defective and was replaced per service bulletin 00-02-35-003j in jan. 2002. problems with chatters and erratic steering performance have continued and gm states that they plan to correct the problem but never have. their recommendation is to grease the shaft...which only helps for a few thousand miles and then the chatter and erratic steering performance returns. it's a distraction which driving and in my opinion could result in an accident. i also question whether the current shaft is strong enough in the event of a rigorous steering maneuver. gm has dragged it's feet on this and it's time an outside agency looked into it and insisted that gm recall the vehicle and develop a permanent fix for this problem. such erratic performance in my opinion is a distraction that could contribute to an accident and the shaft could strip or fracture as well in certain situations according to certain mechanics i've talked with. *jb

All four rotors rusted threw, all four had to be replaced, only 56000 miles on this 2000 chevy silverado pick up truck. *nm

The engine in my 2000 chevy has a knock and tapping noise this has been a ongoing problem i have talked to two chevy dealers and they say it is normal but it keeps getting worse the mileage now is 76585 . *jb

Driving down the road when suddenly without warning my brake pedal lost all compression - the brake line cracked from contact rubbing against a beam under the cars part of the suspension - a recall service was performed but was not performed right. *nm

1) tailgate latch does not lock tailgate in the upright position. 2) i was hauling a load of wood in bed of truck when the tailgate unlatched, resulting in wood falling out of truck into traffic following behind me. 3) the failure has not yet been corrected. *nm

All of the brake lines rusted through causing a complete brake failure on the 2000 silverado truck. had to have all of the lines replaced along with the calipers. truck had approximately 52590 miles. *jb

Chevrolet silverado was taken to dealer in march 2006 for 100k service. dealer stated the fuel line is so badly rusted that he could not replace the fuel filter for fear of rupturing the gas line. when i suggested replacing the entire fuel line the estimate was 999.90 due to extensive labor cost. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated the frame fractured about 2" in front of the towing package on both the driver and passenger sides. the dealership alerted the manufacturer. the dealership took digital pictures of the cracked frame. the contact is only towing 3,875 pounds which is under the maximum towing specifications of 8,000 pounds. general motors has agreed to give the contact a loaner vehicle; awaiting their decision to remedy the problem without charge. the maximum towing specifications for a 5300 v8 is 8,000 pounds with a maximum tongue weight of 1,000 lbs. updated 05/10/06

2000 k3500 silverado has had three failed fuel injector pumps, fuel transfer pump, automatic transmission at 70,000 miles and boost regulator failed. *ts when the consumer removed the engine,to evaluate the damage, to see if it could be rebuilt, he discovered the second main bearing cap from the front of the engine was missing a bolt. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated the brakes where applied at 8-10pmh and the abs engaged, resulting in the contact having a crash. to avoid a rear end collision, the contact left the road and hit an embankment on the passenger side of the vehicle. the police did not take a report at the scene and no injuries were sustained. after the accident the contact received a recall 05v379000, concerning the antilock brakes. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, the speed sensors were cleaned and it was determined the hydraulic pump needed to be replaced. however, the dealer was not able to determine whether the brake failure and accident were caused by the abs sensor or the hydraulic pump. the contact felt the pump should have been included in the recall campaign. additionally, the brake rotors were replaced, due to corrosion, after only 4,000 miles.

Have been seeing this situation when i fill up my fuel tank: the message center will show "low fuel" and the fuel gauge will be on "empty" when i do fill up with fuel. i have to move the "shifter" back and forth from "park" to "drive" a few times in order for the "message" to disappear and the "fuel gauge" showing "full". *nm

There was a recall on my chevy truck for the abs system. after the service my abs system failed and the light remains on that it is not functioning. i called gm and they said that it was not part of the recall.. i have driven only 1700 miles since this service was done. i believe this problem should be taken care of by gm. *jb

There is a high effort at the gas pedal on when the vehicle is cold. sometimes this effort is so great that when backing or in a parking lot, i must apply force then the vehicle lurches forward. this has been happening for a number of years since i purchased the vehicle new in october of 1999. *nm

Fuel gage is showing it is on empty and the tank is full. this does not matter if the tank is 1/2 or full. the truck can be in park or in drive. it happens when the truck is sitting still for more than a minute. then the gage will jump from full to empty and in all other directions. this has cause me to run out of gas a couple of times. i know have to reset my trip to keep up with the miles that i have put on the truck. *jb

2000 chevrolet silverado lost brakes due to the flex pipe rubbing the right front wheel. *ts february 2001 the consumer received a recall for clearance condition between the front right brake pipe and the body cross sill (00v345000). on oct 14, 2003 the front brake pads and rotors had to be replaced. the vehicle had 75155 miles. on nov 9, 2005 another recall was received in reference to rust on the front wheel sensors (05v379000). after repair and less than 100 miles later the brakes failed due to the flex pipe rubbing the right front wheel. emergency brake had to be adjusted. the consumer believes that when the recall work was done some how they got the flex line against the wheel causing the brakes to fail. the consumer is convinced that the dealer never did the recall for the right brake pipe. *nm

The fuel gauge 2000 chevrolet silverado has been acting erratically for several months. it will go all the way down to e and showing low fuel usually while vehicle is sitting still, then it will bounce back to where it should be , i.e. 1/2 tank. *ak

While driving 2000, chevrolet, silverado and coming off the exit ramp from the highway vehicle lost power assist steering and brakes. this almost have an accident and r vehicle ran off the road. if there would have been a vehicle next to consumer's vehicle he would not have been able to avoid hitting it. when i got the truck back home and started inspecting it to see what happened. being a licensed technician i found that power steering pump failed. having access to repair information was able to find gmc recall 205010 concerning the failure of the power steering pump. when contacting taylor chevrolet and talking to mike in service department was told that the recall did not apply to this vehicle, and to contact gmc customer service. then i called gmc customer service and was told the same thing. this was the exact symptom that the recall stated, but they told me it did not apply to this vehicle. this failure could have caused a serious accident. someone should find out how many more trucks were driving with faulty power steering pumps before someone got killed.*ak

Chevy silverado z71 4x4 in november 2005, i had an accident due to the abs not functioning correctly, while pulling into a parking space lightly applying my brakes the abs started to chatter and i could not stop fast enough and hit a light poll with the right side fender and bumper. i got out to look to see why i slid, but the surface was clean and dry. i was puzzled, on the drive home it happened again this time coming to a stop and again lightly applying the brakes the abs shuttered, this time stopping into cross intersection traffic. i was now scared and the slower i drove the worse it was, i approached a school zone in my neighborhood and a child ran accross the street and again i braked but i could not stop quick enough and struck this child, not seriously but enough to knock him down. i got home parked the truck and have not driven it since. i have not taken it to the shop because last year i spent a lot of money at the chevy dealer getting a complete brake job, and several service items costing thousands and i was just tapped out and i figured i would wait till i get some money. i heard the other night on the news about a recall on this very issue so i contacted my dealer and they stated that my vin number [xxx] is not included in the recall for the abs speed sensor problem. Truck had 41000 miles and the gas gauge started jumping from empty to full. around 44000 miles the abs brake light on the dash appeared, took to dealer, said it was the sensor at/near the center bottom of engine and was common , it would cost me around $1000.00 to have it repaired or wait to see if it was recalled and just drive my truck using the hyd brakes only. i have been doing this. had only the man. warranty that ended at 36 k. very disappointed, very long. *nm

The emergency brake has been used very rarely, but with just over 40k on it they eventually faded out enough to fail inspection. the dealership advised me that i must have drove with it on. i never used it, yet they collected over $200 to repair a defect. over time i noticed the tension progressively weakened. rusting on the rotors is extremely common, yet gm ignores the problem. i was told by the dealership on multiple occasions that it was from condensation. it causes premature failure of the brake pads & a rotor replace as a resolution(turning alone doesn't remove the rust). my other family member have had all the exact issues with the same type trucks(three different 2000 gmc/chevy). my rotors will be replaced in the summer, however my braking is reduced due to rust wearing the pads unevenly. *jb

Dt: the contact stated doors will not open from the inside. the locks were electrical, and the window had to be rolled down to open the door from the outside. has been in contact with the dealer. they informed him that he would have to order another handle for the vehicle. the vehicle was not under warranty and no repairs have been made. the outside door handles malfunctioned. when pulling them out to open the door and they stayed out. when getting into the truck and closing the door it locked automatically. with the outside handle out the door will not unlock electrically or mechanically from the inside. the only way to get the door unlocked was to open the window and push the handle in. if the window failed to open the contact would be trapped in the vehicle. manufacturer refused to fix or replace the handles. *ak

The ongoing problem that i am experiencing is with the accelerator pedal. after the truck has been parked for a brief period of time and only when first starting out ; i have to apply excessive pressure to make the pedal go down. it seems as if it is stuck. this can be quite unnerving when parked in close proximity to other vehicles . i have to tap it firmly and quickly so as not to maintain pressure on the accelerator and accelerate unnecessarily. this is an intermittent problem but is becoming more common as the vehicle ages . * incident date does not apply to this complaint based on the fact that it is an ongoing occurrence. *nm

I am writing to seek some assistance with an inferior product produced by gm. i have a chevy 2000 silverado z71 pick up that has piston slap starting at around 15k miles and progressively worsened which the dealer states is normal wear. this expensive vehicle also has a rear end bang into drive and then reverse again the dealer states is normal. recently i fixed a snapped cable for the drivers window which the same kind of cable was recalled for the tail gate cables. i have replaced recall items for the tail gate cables, drive shaft yolk and the abs sensors to which it is still not functioning properly. all of which when presented to the dealer and the response was it is normal, until the recall occurred. it seems the policy of a company which creates an inferior product is to state, "it is normal" to the consumer until the government steps when enough people complain and makes the dealer own up to the problems with the products and finally treats the consumer with more compassion, and to some degree "decency". with the many problems with this vehicle the government needs to step in and help the consumer with the dealership resistance to fix the problems caused by more concern for profit than quality. *nm

I was driving home one night in my 2000 z71 when i noticed a banging sound coming from the rear. i thought it was the air compressor in the bed of the truck moving around. when i determined that was not the source of the sound, i took the truck to a friends garage where we lifted the rear and removed the rear-end housing cover. upon inspection of the differential we noticed that the retention bolt had broken and the cross pin fell out. this in turn caused the spider gears to "explode." i purchased and installed a new differential, $500.00. i still have a "ticking" noise coming from the rear. i believe that is due to a missing tooth on the pinion gear caused by the cross pin. now i have to order a new ring and pinion gear set, $300. 74,000 miles. 14,000 over warranty. i found out that this is a fairly common problem in these z71's. *nm

I saw a news article about gm vehicles having problem with the abs at low speeds. i have a 2000 chevrolet silverado 2500, and i have to admit my vehicle has had this problem. the problem is only at low speeds. it is very concerning to me, especially when i want to stop and the vehicle will not allow me to. i have not had any accidents-yet, but i am certain accidents will occur as a result of this problem. i noticed a recall for this in some states, but not mn. *nm

Problem: abs brake activation at low speed. it takes longer to stop causing safety concerns here. brought in to shop and they thought could fix the problem by removing and cleaning sensors and surrounding area due to excessive rust build up. they wound up replacing both sensors. a very costly repair. i am aware of your recall on this problem but gm says my vehicle is not affected even though it is in the affected vehicle manufacturer date. very disappointed in gm's response. *jb

My brakes failed, i replaced my brakes and i was never informed by general motors that there was a recall. 8/22/02: replaced front disc pads, replaced front brake rotors, cleaned caliper slides and hardware, replaced rear disc pads, replaced rear brake rotors, cleaned caliper slides and hardware on back also. also replaced left rear emergency brake band/cable and hardware. 8/21/03: replaced tailgate handle. 7/5/05: replaced tailgate cable because it had broke in half. 7/13/05: replace u-joints. 11/1/05: had transmission serviced-filter and flush and was told that the transfer case select module needs to be replaced. while at the dealer getting the air bag adjusted we asked the dealer if there was a recall on the tailgate cable, as ours was busted, we were informed that there was a dealer recall, but our truck was not one of those recalled so we had to pay for the cable ourselves at a cost of $16.22. until we went in for the air bag recall we had never been informed about any recalls. we were just informed about the abs recall and we informed gm that we had replaced the recalled parts and were offered $60.00 for what cost us $826.60. this goes along with my other complaint, #10142457. *jb

Dt: contact received recall 04v129000 concerning tailgate: hinge and attachments. the dealer replaced the galvanized steel straps with the same type of straps. the recall letter indicated the replacement should be stainless steel. the vehicle was experiencing the same problems as indicated on the recall letter. *ak

I have had repeated problems with the anti-lock brakes on my chevy silverado pickup. i realize there is an active recall on this issue (05v379000) but chevrolet has not acknowledged that my vehicle needs to be included in this recall. i have already spent in excess of $600 and now need additional work done on my vehicle related to this problem and would like to be reimbursed as well as having the new work done at no cost to me. *jb

Abs control module failure-2000 chevrolet silverado 1500- i have been the sole owner of above vehicle and throughout the course of owning it, the abs light would intermittently activate. at times during slow speed stops, the abs pump would activate on its own. when i inquired about this at a local service station, i was told my wheel sensor was probably dirty. after cleaning, the light would go out and then come back on. now with less than 65,000 miles on the vehicle, the abs light is constantly on, i checked with the dealership and i'm told the abs control module is dead...$1300 estimate for repairs. checking online at this forum, http://www.4x4review.com/discussions2/robots/1346.asp, i see that several of us have had the same problem with no assitance from gm about an obvious defect in their product that directly effects the safety of it's owners. please advise of the status of this complaint and any resolutions. *nm

My silverado makes a clunking noise when you take off from a dead stop. *jb

While driving under normal driving conditions, meaning fair weather and dry road surface, the service brakes were applied rather firmly. a vehicle had stopped suddenly to avoid a collision and had done so rather abruptly. after the service brakes were applied, the anti-lock brake system disengaged the brakes repetitively and did not allow the vehicle to slow sufficiently. driver had to swerve to avoid a collision. luckily, there was no significant property damage (under $200 so a police officer who observed the incident refused to file a report), and there was no personal injury. i called a local gm service department and asked as to the time frame of the recall for this issue. i had seen a reference to it on the national news in september. the service advisor told me that there was no recall on the anti-lock brakes. i told the service advisor there was a notice on the national news in reference to that exact issue. he then changed his story and claimed that it was only a recall if i lived in the northern states where the dot uses salt on the highways. i live in tennessee where the local dot uses excessive salt on the highway at the mere mention of a possible dusting of snow. and yet, the "recall" is not in effect in my state. i decided to look for myself at the recall notice and found this farce of a recall notice. i must ask, why is a manufacturing defect that could cause a major malfunction in the safety mechanisms of a vehicle only looked at in certain states? the answer i expect to get is that the dot does not use salt on the roads in the south, a blatant lie. so, as for the corrective action, i can do nothing. the service department says there is nothing wrong with my brakes, the anti-lock brake system, or my truck. the service advisor then told me that i should learn how to drive and to have a nice day. *nm

The brakes continued to fail so i proceeded to have the brakes replaced. then the anti-lock system began to fail on a regular basis. i had that system cleaned, that did not solve the problem, so i had the wheel bearings and sensors replaced. that solved my problems. *jb

Failure of 3 brake components within 3 1/2 months, including replacement of all 4 rotors due to their having rusted out, 2 front abs sensors, and immediately thereafter we are advised that the brake lines have rusted out (not yet replaced); neither the dealer nor the manufacturer will discuss with us, state that this is environmental, notwithstanding that our other (and older) vehicles have never had anything like this; we have been stone walled by the dealer and gm. truck is presently inoperable due to no brakes! nm

Service f.w.d. light comes on , dealer says nothing is wrong but the f.w.d. dose not work sometimes. i am afraid that it will go into f.w.d. low when i am driving at a moderate speed causing transmission problems and possible injury. *jb

Brake rotors on 2000 and up chevy pickups rust out and chip off cutting brake pads without warning. *jb

On 17 oct 05, i was required to replace all four rotors and associated brake pads on my 2000 chev silverado truck. this vehicle has less than 50,000 miles, is not routinely exposed to corrosive road conditions, and all 4 rotors were completely eaten by rust. in fact, the rotors indicated that my vehicle was reduced to less than 40% of the original design braking capacity. the rotors are heavily corroded and pitted with rust. they are not able to be resurfaced. chevrolet was contacted and, to date, has displayed little or no interest in dealing with this problem. the service manager at my dealership indicates that this is a known, on-going problem. significant numbers of gm vehicles appear to be on the road with vastly reduced braking capacity due to this metal defect in the brake rotor system. *nm

Dt: contact owns a 2000 chevrolet silverado. recall 05v161000 was issued concerning parking brake defect. contacted the manufacturer and was told this vehicle was not included in this recall due to vin. *ak while driving the vehicle you could hear a squealing noise, it ate up the rotor. took the vehicle to the shop 10-7-05 where they replaced the parts.

Transmission needs to be replaced. after highway driving, the transmission will not engage in 2nd or 3rd gear. no error message or warning appears. this nearly caused an accident when the transmission failed at an intersection. i bought the truck in july to assist w/rescues and cannot put the animals or myself at risk. chevrolet is aware of this issue; the local chevy dealership said they have seen it often; my personal mechanic has seen it often. chevrolet asked me to take it to their dealership and have the diagnostics run. $90 and confirmation transmission needed. now they want me to pay $2,500 to have a new transmission put in by their dealership, then discuss any reimbursement. this is a very dangerous "known" defect and chevrolet does not guarantee the replacement transmission will not do the same. it appears a death will be required before chevrolet takes responsibility, then they can deal with a class action suit. *nm

Dt: the contact's son was involved in an accident on 6-17-05. the contact received a copy of the crash report. upon impact, neither air bag deployed. the vehicle hit several trees. the police report stated the speed limit was 55 mph. the passenger's head went through the windshield, but passenger was not seriously hurt. neither the driver nor the passenger had to go to the hospital. the contact reported that air bag light illuminated in the car prior to the incident. the insurance company has been notified. the truck was totaled. the contact took pictures of the pine tree that was embedded in the hood. updated 11/15/05. *jb

Dt: the contacts complained about electrical problems. the dashboard board gauges were incorrect. this happened every time that the vehicle was in use. every light on the dashboard came on. the electrical problems have been happening for the past week. also, he vehicle experienced starting problems. the vehicle sometimes will not start the first time when trying to start it. the contact has to wait about 20 minutes then start the vehicle again. the battery has been checked and it was charging. this has been an intermittent problem for a year. she spoke to gm, and they said to take the vehicle to the dealer for diagnostic testing. she has not taken the vehicle to a dealership at this time.*ak

Dt: the contact states that he has experienced some problems with the braking system. a few days ago the brake pedal went all the way to the floor. upon inspection he discovered that the brake line completely rusted. he was left with only secondary brakes or just the emergency brake. this same problem occurred about four months ago. during the first brake failure the abs light illuminated on the dashboard. three brake lines have been replaced by the contact at this time. he planned to replace all the brake lines. *ak

During low speed stopping the brake pedal goes nearly to the floor and stopping distance is greatly increased. symptoms sound identical to nhtsa campaign id number : 05v379000 that is supposedly to occur only in salt belt states. *jb

Dt: contact stated that one of the gas tank straps that secure the tank to the vehicle rusted. the sending unit was not working properly in showing how much gas was in the tank. the contact looked under the vehicle to see if a wire was loose and found the strap rusted. dealer ordered a replacement part at consumers expense. manufacturer has not been contacted yet. *ak when the consumer went to replace the gas strap, he noticed the other strap was in the process of breaking. updated 11/29/05. *jb

On 9/22/05 i had smoke coming out of the steering wheel column. on 9/23/05 i brought my 2000 chevrolet silverado to the champion chevrolet dealer for diagnostics. it was determined that the multi function switch p/n 26100839 was damaged and needed replacement. this is a fire hazard and should be recalled by gm. i do have the old damaged switch. *jb

I was driving on a four lane interstate in cruise control going 70 mph. suddenly i was going down the highway sideways. i slid off the road and hit a highway sign which slowed me and must have jarred something because then i could use my brakes and all four of them seemed to work. i smashed the drivers side door and rocker panel and other damage, probably bent the rim on a tire, had cuts on both hands and had to take my dogs and cat to the vet as they were in shock. i was about 130 to 150 miles from home and thanks to friends was able to get home that evening. the chevrolet dealership i had it towed to, said they could find no reason for the rear wheels to lock. but according to the dps officer that is what they seemed to do. *nm

I have had a number of gm vehicles and the fuel sending unit seems to be a problem in all the truck models. i can only find a pending recall for 2000-1 gmc yukon xl, and suburban. are the same parts not used in all the truck models in those years? are there any other pending recalls on these vehicles? see recall notice 05v155000. thanks. *jb

2000 chevy silverado. a while back i had a problem with the anti-lock brakes. they would engage at low speed and make it near impossible to stop. a mechanic friend told me that it was because of corrosion under the antilock sensors in the front wheel. he cleaned this area and the problem was gone. now the problem has returned. this has to be a safety violation on behave of chevy. *nm

At speeds under 15 mph the abs activates and the vehicle goes 1 to two feet further than expected. usually happens when coming to a stop sign, stop light, parking or in heavy traffic. this happens a lot!! i know there is a campaign out there, but they need to approve it before there are more wrecks! the canadian recall was over a year ago, why is the us recall so far behind? *jb

Brake lines (pipes) are rusted so severely that all fluid suddenly leaked out as i was driving in heavy traffic. the rusting condition must have originated when the vehicle was manufactured, as i reported brake problems to the dealer from whom i purchased the vehicle. after several complaints the dealer made major repairs in 2002 on the brakes due to rusted out components, but did not replace the hydraulic lines. the service manager exclaimed that he had never seen so much rust on brake systems. as a retired professor, having taught metallurgy and industrial materials, there are metal treatment procedures that must be followed when manufacturing piping for vehicle hydraulic systems. obviously, general motors used inferior parts and materials in brake systems. if they do not recall all vehicles with brake component rusting problems, many accidents will occur. the vehicle i am reporting is currently under repair and the cost estimates by the service department at tom gill chevrolet in florence, kentucky are quoted at $1500.00, or more. brake lines should not rust out in five years. i have never had rusted out brakes lines on any of 14 vehicles i have owned. general motors is responsible for the pending repair costs, and if past history is an indication, they will deny responsibility and blame the consumer one more time. *jb

When trying to stop at slow speeds the brake pedal kicks back like the abs is engaged. i have to take my foot off and re-apply the brakes to stop.this is a very dangerous situation.

Break problems, truck does not want to stop on occasion. i have made several complaints to the dealer, and to gm, however the dealer has fixed my truck, and it still has problems, i have found out that there is a recall on it ( recall number 05068) gm has not given me any satisfaction, and was very rude telling me that i did not know how to drive, i am a 66 year old man and i have been driving since i was 16, i think i should know when my truck will not stop. *nm

After narrowly avoiding an accident, i noticed that the abs would activate in the last ten feet or so when stopping my 2000 cheverolet silverado pickup truck. vin [xxx]. i took the truck to the gm dealership and reported the incidents and requested repair. the service department of brenengen cheverlet, west salem wisconsin found a gm bulletin on the problem and followed the instructions contained therein and cleaned the abs sensor mounts which corrected the problem. i have read in the local newspaper about a possible recall of some gm vehicles. so far this recall has not been released in the state of wisconsin, but certainly there is an ongoing problem that needs immediate attention and action to correct this problem. i am convinced from my experience, that this situation will cause or has caused many accidents/incidents in the state of wisconsin. *nm updated 07/19/2012 *js information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

All of the rotors rusted and had severe corrosion prior to my truck having even 8000 miles. yes that # of miles is correct only 8000. i was told by other general motor truck gmc, tahoe etc similar vehicles that this is normal due to the poor quality of materials used. i have purchased new after market rotors that are not corroding as the originals did. i have kept my original rotors to remind me of gm quality for my next truck purchase which turns out to be a ford f250 2005. i really think that gm should be held responsible for the rotor problem, it is not because of our climate as i have lived in the virgin islands and have owned many different vehicles foreign and domestic and have never seen rotors deteriorate like on this 2000 silverado. the nhtsa needs to hold chevrolet responsible they should not be able to purchase rotors from inferior venders and then blame the problem on the customers climate, i am a far ways from the northern states. i still have not had my tailgate cables replaced as the dealer never has them in stock. but they are still good. what about my 1996 chevrolet s-10 those cables have rusted and broke and are not covered under the recall. *nm

Excessive engine knock on cold start hot or cold weather every day been to 2 different dealers and was told was normal and it seems to get worse as i put miles on truck only have 48k on it and change oil every 3k. *jb

We have had problems with the brakes on our 2000 silverado 1/2 ton since we bought it in 2003. we have replaced both rear and front brakes (including front rotors). the pedal has always been soft, and sometimes goes right to the floor. the abs light comes on and off. recently the brakes have been failing, resulting in us rolling through stop signs, gas stations, driveway, causing dangerous situations. the pedal either goes to the floor, or the anti-lock grabs, causing the brakes to 'catch' and 'uncatch' and us to roll through. my husband and i are both concerned about the money we are putting into these brakes, and are worried that an accident is imminent if the brakes continue to function in this way. our dealer says they can do nothing until a recall letter is sent out. as of now, we have had the abs disconnected by our mechanic, so that we can have some brakes without the worry of the anti-lock catching and us rolling through intersections. is chevorlet worried about this? when can we expect something to be fixed by gm? *jb

Dt: there was a problem with the abs brakes. the problem first started on 8-1-05 and on 8-14-05 the consumer ran two stop signs. the problem occurred at least 12 times. there have been no accidents as of yet. when the consumer took the vehicle to a mechanic, they told him that there was a problem with corrosion of the abs. the consumer heard that there was a recall on this issue that only included certain states, but his state was not included. *ak *jb

Dt: there is a problem with the abs brake system . on 8-15-05 the brakes failed, causing the consumer to run a stop light at an intersection. the consumer was able to safely get the vehicle home without incident. after the brake failure he noticed the abs warning light came on. the consumer has not driven the vehicle since. the consumer has not been able to take the vehicle to a dealer to be inspected as of yet. the consumer had contacted the dealership and they told him to contact the manufacturer. the manufacturer told him that it was under investigation. *ak

Dt: the consumer experienced a problem with unwanted anti lock brake activation. the problem first started around 7-4-05. the consumer contacted a dealership by phone and they told him that it was normal for this to occur. this happened at slow speeds, 10 mph or less. this was an on going problem. and it has caused the consumer to almost have an accident a couple of times. the consumer found on the website that there was nhtsa recall 05v379000/gm recall 05068. when the consumer contacted the manufacturer they told him that it was still under investigation. *ak

2000 chevrolet silverado pick-up has been having brake problems and is getting worse. truck has a defect with the antilock brake sensor that is know to gm. there was an announcement on the news about a recall on brakes for gm trucks and suvs. according to information on the internet the 2000 chevrolet silverado is part of that recall. when i called the dealer to get it fixed they said an "official" recall hasn't been made yet. i told them that i have already been experiencing problems with the brakes and was almost in an accident due to this. they said to bring it in. when the dealership called gm for authorization to repair the vehicle gm refused to authorize truck to be repaired because "the recall is not going out until november". this is a safety issue and it needs to be addressed now. the truck is becoming unsafe to drive. gm has already made it public that there will be a recall due to this problem. they should take responsibility for this problem and repair vehicles that are currently experiencing brake problems before someone gets into a serious accident because of it. *nm

2000 silverado pickup. brakes will not stop vehicle- slow it down and it rolls to a stop. low speeds. happens intermittently- especially during rain or muddy road conditions. strongly believed to be improper sensing or adjustment by abs system. do not understand why hawaii not part of recall. is this a matter of what states sends in the most votes or a matter of safety? gm has a faulty product- i and my family are endangered and i want it fixed- as do others here in hawaii. *nm

I purchased the vehicle with just over 36000 miles and have used it as a daily-driver. the abs began to activate while maneuvering at low speeds. problem has occurred more often than i can count. has lead to the vehicle running up onto curbs/sidewalks. one occasion has caused me to hit another vehicle. dealership told me, after examining the vehicle, it was defective speed sensors. (they didn't really inspect it. the speed sensors were replaced earlier that week) ended up replacing entire front assemblies. i was told that the parts wore out. (funny, was told the plastic speed sensors wore out the metal surrounding them. and they showed no wear) i have the original speed sensors. *jb

Dt: recall #05068 on the abs system. the consumer experienced the same problem as stated in the recall, however the state that the consumer resides in was not included. the consumer stated that the problem has been going on for a month and it was getting worse. the consumer noticed the problem around august 1, 2005. the consumer could feel it through the brake and hear a clicking sound. *jb (11/17/05) *sc

Looking at the complaints and service bulletins, it's obvious that gm has a problem with their fuel level gauge sending unit in the tank. i also have the problem, along with many others in the area. it appears that no one intends to do anything about it. it appears that someone is going to have to run out of gas in the middle of a busy highway, and when trying to get off the hwy, somebody gets killed, before anything is done. or, one of our wives gets stranded by running out of gas, and raped and/or murdered, before anything is done. this will keep going until one of the above incidents occurs and a class action suit of all the people that have the problem come together in the suit. we all know what happens then. the lawyers win, and everybody else looses. fixing the problem would certainly be the cheapest corrective action in the long run. *jb

(1) driving in normal conditions. dry roads. normal speeds. (2) when having to stop, the anti-lock brakes kick on, keeping my 2000 silverado from being able to stop. i have to let up on the brakes and re-apply in order to prevent myself from hitting the car in front of me or rolling through a stop sign or light. (3) nothing has been done. i have read that a lot of people have been removing the fuse so the anti-lock brakes don't even work. this is not a proper solution.*jb

Dt: the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet silverado. while driving on the highway the vehicle stalled. upon checking the fuse box the contact noticed that fuel pump fuse had blew out. as long as the contact kept the fuel tank below a half a tank this problem did not occur. the fuel pump fuse had to be replaced four times. also, the vehicle will show inaccurate fuel readings. he purchased two fuel pumps to make sure exactly what the problem was before he did this work on the vehicle. the vehicle was not taken to a dealership. one of contact's friends noticed on the internet several other similar complaints. he had this problem for about two months. the way he deals with this problem is to keep fuel below a half a tank. *ak

Two complaints, same vehicle system: brakes. 1. my front brakes failed while driving @20mph thru a residential area..sailed through a stop sign but fortunately no one was at the intersection. had to push the brake pedal all the way to the floor to get minimal stopping ability. no fluid leakage. master cylinder level was still at 'max'; truck was towed to repair shop (procare); found both front brake lines blown due to severe rust; rear brake lines out of the differential appeared fine. why would the brake lines rust through ??? 2. during this repair, procare stated that they found the rear rotors severely rusted and would need replaced...again! [supposedly, procare stated that other large gm vehicles (sierra, tahoe, trailblazer, suburban, etc) have the same issue with rusting rotors.] rear rotors and pads were replaced on this vehicle 11/26/2002 @19k miles due to severe rust. front rotors and pads were replaced 9/5/2003 @26k miles due to sever rust. this vehicle is not used in any extreme conditions nor is it used for a business. why are the rotors rusting ?? is gm using substandard parts? complaints to the chevy customer service number 1-800-222-1020 (as in the past) are futile and useless at this point.

Failuree of the anti-lock braking speed sensors at low speeds that led to two separate crashes. the dealership cleaned the wheel speed sensors but did not replace any parts

Dt: the consumer received nhtsa recall 05v161000 and gm recall 05042 concerning parking brake failure. the dealership told the consumer that if they had to take the rotors off the truck they were damaged the consumer would have to pay to have them fixed or buy new rotors. the dealership told the consumer that the rotors were about $400.00 to be repaired. the consumer has not been in contact with manufacturer. the consumer called and got the recorded message. *ak *nm

I own a 2000 chevy silverado. while traveling at low speeds the anti-lock brake system activates which makes it harder to stop the vehicle. i have had several near misses because this defect has affected stopping distances. gm is aware of the problem with the faulty abs sensors. i know that there was a recall in canada but they haven't done a recall in the us. i talked to a mechanic at a chevy dealership who stated that it would cost hundreds of dollars to fix the sensors. i am on a fixed income. it should be their responsibility due to the faulty sensors. this defect is jeopardizing people's lives. i can't drive my children in the vehicle because i fear for their safety. *jb

Abs failure at low speed causing collision in parking lot - this has been a recurring problem with my 2000 silverado 1500 p/u - resulting in extreme body damage to the truck and a near fatal result for myself and two grandchildren - this truck has been serviced regularly at the dealership, in fact major work was done 6/13/05 and was brought back to the dealership on 7/5/05 with brake concerns. *nm

Automatic transmission-changing hard- this is the second gm truck product that i have owned and the second one that has had the same problem.

Intermittent brake slippage was noticed. brakes would engage, then actually felt like they weren't holding, significantly increasing stopping distance. problem worsened quickly and within a few days happened on almost every stop. repair shop checked rotors and pads, and declared them okay. they suspected something with abs, found at least one abs recall notice, and suggested repair at the dealership. dealership determined that both front wheel speed sensors were bad, and replaced both at a cost of nearly $600. brakes function correctly now. vehicle is 2000 chevrolet silverado 1500 and problem follows symptoms and remedy associated with nhtsa pe05020.

Dt: 2000 chevrolet silverado was purchased new and after 36 months the warranty expired, the driver's side door locked, and would not open. they were all power locks. driver's door could not be opened, it would not unlock with the keyless entry or the key itself. took vehicle to a dealer, who said there was no way they could repair the problem because they could not get the door open. they suggested cutting the door off, and they would sell consumer a new door. did not contact gm because consumer's father worked for gm, and could lose his job if there was a complaint. vehicle was purchased under employee discount. after about a month or 6 weeks of driving when taking key out of the ignition there was a sound from the driver's side door-it sounded as if there was a piece falling from the door. currently, the door is unlocked and will not lock manually, with key or power. no repairs were done. as of last week the problem started with the passenger's side door. it will not unlock with key or power, similar to the problem on driver's side door . *ak

2000 chevy silverado brakes - vehicle has less than 50,000 miles and i started having brake problems - the brake pedal will kick back as if the abs goes on when i am stopping at a stop sign,etc -- starting occurring more frequently so i decided to change the brake pads in the rear. to my surprise the left rear rotor and backing plate were totally rusted through and that brake pad was worn down almost completely while the right rear rotor/backing plate and brake pad were almost new?? i went ahead and put on the new brake pads but this did not cure the problem. i now am going to take it in to the brake shop where i suspect i will need a new rotor/backing plate and abs sensor on the left rear. i doubt this is due to salt as if it was, it would occur on either both sides or the drivers side more than the passenger side, don't you?? as well, i live in a county that doesn't use straight salt and do little to no city driving. *jb

Just joining the massess of gm truck owners with faulty hub assembly abs sensors. 2000 chevy silverado - 50,000 miles (problem started at approx 45,000) lack of ability in slow speed stopping created some near miss situations with garage doors and people/other autos in parking lots. temporary solution was to pull the fuse, a whole lot less danger on the road without any abs than with it.

I have had ongoing problems with the antilock brakes on my 2000 chev. silverado. this morning i pulled into my drive and the brakes would not stop the truck. my grandchild was in the driveway and by the grace of god he jumped out of the way in time. i understand you are considering a recall on the brakes on these vehicles - please, prevent further incidents by making gm fix this problem!!

During very slow speed such as creeping in heavy traffic, the brake pedal seems to engage the anti-lock brakes making braking unpredictable. problem is very repeatable. similar to investigation pe05-020. *jb

The straps on my baby's car seat do not tighten easily. repeated tightening of the straps led to plastic fatigue on the piece that connects to the straps. we had two of these car seats with my first child. with the first one, dorel juvenile group sold me another car seat at a discounted price. with the second car seat to experience this trouble, dorel told me that they hadn't received any other claims of this problem. now with my second child, we mostly had trouble with the car seat when it was in the rear facing position. dorel should at least acknowledge that there is a problem with the design of the car seat that leads to plastic fatigue. this car seat is the comfort ride model no. 22-400-brd. there wasn't a box to check for this particular car seat. this was an intermittent problem. *sc

Dt: received new brake lines and brakes from the gm dealer, this was a design change because they were not like the old ones. when making a right or left hand turn it made the rubber brake line come in contact with the wheel. this happened on july 27, 2005. the new lines havdbeen on h just a little over 30 days. *ak

Dt: the vehicle is a 2000 chevrolet silverado pick-up truck. the abs is coming on unexpectedly when the consumer applies the brakes. several times when this occurred it caused the brakes not to work properly and at other times it caused them to fail. this problem has caused the consumer to almost hit another vehicle and a building on separate occasions. she has taken it to the dealership which they told her that the problem was the abs senor needed to be cleaned. they removed and cleaned both front wheel speed sensors. because of some kind of build up on the sensor. when the consumer had this fixed the dealership broke the brake pads and rotors trying to get to the problem. they replaced these parts at the consumers expense. the problem has not come back since they cleaned the sensor. this is the only know problem with the vehicle at this time. *jb

Anti-lock brakes kick in when attempting to stop on dry pavement driving slow. when this occurs, the stopping distance is greater. the greater stopping distance increased the chance of hitting something. the dealer replaced the front, driver side hub assembly. *nm

I own a 2000 chevy silverado truck. it has 57,000 miles and is in excellent condition. on or about july 09 2005, the power lock mechanism for the passenger door stopped working. the drivers side door still worked. i thought it might be a blown fuse but after checking all fuses determined that wasn't the problem. i felt that my key to the doors would allow access to the passenger side but it would not open. the key did work on the drivers side. the slide bar on the passenger side door also could not move thus rendering that door in a constant state of being locked. i became very concerned that a vehicle could be made with power locks and not have some system to manually allow the opening of the vehicle. if the vehicle were in an accident and the only way out was the passenger door the occupant could face serious injury or even death. i sent an e mail to general motors customer assistance and explained the problem. i wanted to speak to an engineer to find out why a vehicle would function like this but was told that they could not honor my request and i needed to bring the truck to a dealer for repairs my stance is i do not trust some dealers and that wouldn't determine if the design has a major flaw. my vehicle might have been fixed at my expense but perhaps another owner might be having similar problems due to faulty designs which is a severe safety risk. i am requesting this matter receives a quick investigation before a serious injury or death occurs. general motors does not seem to be concerned. i do not want to have general motors to repair this truck until an independent study is performed. i will not allow any other passengers in this truck.*jb

2000 chevy truck fuel gauge goes from full to empty all the time and also vacuum leak under passenger side by air bag. *jb

Dt: the consumer states that his 2000 chevy silverado is making noise from the brakes. the brake sensor was failing and not working correctly. this has been a problem for several months. and three months ago the owner had $700.00 worth of work done to the vehicle concerning the brake issue. the dealer has not been cooperative in dealing with this matter. right now the brakes are not working correctly and this is the third occasion. all work has been performed by the dealership or certified repair shop. the owner has not talked to chevrolet. the dealer checked for any recalls, and said he would get back in touch with the owner of the vehicle. at this point, the dealer has not called back. the rotors and pads were replaced on october 6, 2004. the brake pedal felt spongy and making a funny towards the end of a stop. and then the problem persisted and the vehicle failed to stop on april 14, 2005. on april 15, 2005, the dealership did $667.16 worth of brake repair work. the dealership said that it had to do with the abs sensor. the consumer was told about the service bulletin about the abs that the dealership knew about. right now the brake pedal has a spongy feel to it. to the point that the pedal has to be mashed to the floor before the vehicle will completely stop. the consumer keeps trying to get the problem fixed but it seems to be recurring. *nm

Abs system inoperative since 70,000 miles due to burnt control module. paid dealer $100 to test to find out repairs will be in excess of $900. module located on frame rail where it takes all water from lf tire. numerous others that i know of with same problem. no help from either gm or dealer. duct shields/backing plates completely corroded at 175000 miles as well as the rear differential cover. vehicle has not been in any unusual conditions. failure of the backing plate caused emergency brake shoes to become misaligned and damage rotors and service brakes. at 65000 miles gas gauge became sporadic. dealer service rep informed that they go bad due to cold gas being put into vehicle in winter. entire pump assembly needs replaced at $380. i realize truck has now 175000 miles, but i know too many others and have read hundreds of posts on message boards about the exact same problems.

Same issue as mhtsa action number ea04011 but with the automatic transmission parking brake becomes useless, will not case a crash, but the owners manual states that you must use the parking brake on inclines. this is to avoid a load on the transimission that will make it impossible to shift out of park untill stress is removed from the transmission. launching a boat or parking on a slight hill with a load can result in becoming stranded. the z71 is marketed as off-road, if this happens in remote areas without cell phone converage, it could become life threatening. gm has already agreed to recall the manual transmission version, this needs to be expanded to include all versions using this type of parking brake.

I have a 2000 chevy silverado. the anti-lock brakes are malfunctioning at low speeds. the truck has a hard time stopping on dry pavement, the anti-lock brakes activiate. from the information i have and talking with other chevy truck owners the problem is related to the wheel speed sensors. i pulled the fuse on the anti-lock brakes, now the truck stops fine. this problem really concenrns me. i underestand, based on a detroit news article, that this problem was recalled in canada. why is this not being recalled in michigan and other similiar states that used salt in the winter time? based on the article, the cause to the problem is the corrosion caused by the salt. thank you,

The brakes are weak & when going downhill on a bumpy surface,they go to the floor& you don't know if it's going to stop.

Fuel gauge initially did not register correct amount of fuel when tank is >7/8 full. now the fuel gauge registers the wrong amount of fuel over 50% of the time no matter how full the tank is. this is very dangerous and can leave drivers standed in very dangerous places, especially considering this is a 4x4 vehicle that my family and i use to get into very remote locations. this should be recalled!

Dt: consumer states at 44,000 miles the rotors, pads and wheel bearings were replaced. six months later the wheel speed abs sensor have failed. could not stop the vehicle when going between 2 and 8 mph. consumer took vehicle to a goodyear dealership, and was told there was a technical service bulletin on the abs brakes. number not available. consumer was going to call general motors today. the problem occurred regularly. *ak

Dt: the consumer stated the rotors rusted on the vehicle and ripped the brake pads off. the vehicle had 30,000 miles on it. the brakes started to squeal when the steel backing was rubbing against the rotors. the dealership would not fix the problem under warranty; it was 1 year out of warranty. the consumer had to pay for the problem himself. the manufacturer stated it was normal wear and tear for the brakes to go out at 30,000 miles. consumer isn't exactly sure when the brakes started going bad, but it was approximately 9 months ago. this same vehicle the tailgate support cable broke on the passenger side, broke. there is a recall for this, nhtsa #04v129000, but his vehicle was not part of the recall. the consumer noticed that the cable was broke approximately 1-2 months ago.*jb

Dt: about 3 or 4 moths ago, there was a light that came on in vehicle that said transmission fluid hot. this happened on the interstate. also, there was a vehicle warning light that instructed driver to pull over and let vehicle idle. owner took it to dealer, who reported that there was more than normal metal shavings in the transmission fluid pan, and that the clutch could be going out. then, dealer changed fluid and filter, and instructed the owner that he could continue driving it until it absolutely had to be repaired. the owner continued driving the vehicle, and has hard shifting. owner called the dealership, who reported that could be a symptom of the computer trying to compensate fort he transmission which was failing. then on the 12th of july 2005 the message came on again transmission fluid hot. then owner contacted gm directly, who tried to sell the owner a new truck, but offered no assistance to owner with transmission problem. the vehicle was going to be repaired. the vehicle was regularly serviced with some service records available. there were no other major issues with the truck.*ak

I have a 2000 silverado 4x4 that has the corrosion problem with the front abs sensor, as do many other people despite gm's refusal to admit the problem in the united states... somehow it evidently only happens in canada. anyway, i cannot stop less than 7-8 mph most of the time without multiple pumps of the brakes. i dropped my truck off at serra cheverelet in hudsonville michigan this morning (to have the guy tell me "it is very rare in the us, it generally happens in northern canada" which sounded like it was straight out of a "what to say" pamphlet from gm). the dealership just told me it will be over $950 to replace the front to abs sensors and that it is needed because they can't be cleaned. rest assured, i was told the new parts are guaranteed for life... well what about the lowest-bidder crap they installed at the factory? why isn't that guaranteed for life, seeing how it's malfunction can cause life-threatening accidents. in short, please add another number to the statistics for this complaint.

This complaint is in regard to my 2000 chevy silverado 1500 4x4 and its poor brakes. at 40,000 miles just over a year ago, all of its disc rotors were replaced due to excessive wear by my certified mechanic. a complaint was filed with gm customer service at that point. at 50,000 miles, a small leak was found on my rear caliper and vast, significant corrosion was noted on all 4 calipers. due to safety issues, all 4 calipers were replaced by the same mechanic. i continue to experience further braking difficulties. as i approach a stop, my braking distance will increase at 5mph or less and it feels like hesitation through the pedal and a chattering. this has caused me to stop further into intersections than anticipated and many near- misses for rear end accidents. no warning lights have been activated and no diagnostic coding is evident when tested. i brought the truck to a local gm dealership who claimed to know nothing of problems with the abs in my truck's model or year. upon test drive the gm mechanic felt it was the abs sensor and corrosion causing the problem, therefore the wheel assembly and sensor were replaced as one unit at cost of $520 paid by me.

2000 chevrolet silverado developed a vibration in the front end while driving at 55 to 60 mph.*mr the vibration transmitted to the steering wheel while driving. the consumer explained that this condition could occur 5 miles apart or 20000 miles apart. *nm

When i'm going at slow speeds and hit the brakes quite often the antilock braking system will come on for no reason. this has led to many close calls regarding accidents.

Air bags did not deploy upon impact

Dt: consumer stated the accelerator was sticking in his vehicle. the problem seemed to be worse when the vehicle heated up. a certified mechanic stated it was a defective throttle body. this happens mostly while the vehicle is being driven at low speeds. the mechanic stated the throttle body needed to be replaced. *jb

Anti lock brakes go off below 10mph when coming to a stop on dry pavement. which causes the vehicle to role almost resuliting in minor collision.

Anti lock brakes kick in when attempting to try to stop my chevy silverado 1500 pickup truck. after it had happened a few times i did not think anything of it and thought maybe the brakes had been exposed to greese or something. i eventually wound up rear ending a vehicle when attempting to park behind it in a mall parking lot. it cost my insurance company 600.00 and i am sure that this will impact my insurance costs. i recently heard that the gonvernment was looking into this issue and gm had done a recall in canada for the same issue. i am frustrated with gm and currently have this truck for sale and will be contacting them to request that they fix it. if they are not willing to repair it then i will be considering taking them to court to recover the cost my insurance company and hopefully keep my insurance from increasing. any assistance with this matter from you would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

Transmission failed at 77,200 miles. transmission was replaced at owner's expense. dealership stated that there was no reason for the transmission to fail at that mileage unless the truck was used on a farm or consistently used for heavy towing. the truck was not used on a farm and was used for towing (a boat and 2 snowmobilies) about 10 times per year.

Front and rear brake rotors rusting on 2000 chevy silerado 4x4. dealer replace rear only last year. i wanted all 4 replaced then. just had a close call with stopping distance. inspected brakes and found rear rotor rusted completely and front inside of rotors rust.

2000 chevy silverado has anti-lock braking problem under 5mph. several near crashes or rear-enders have occured. i shouldn't have to pump the breaks to avoid the system (abs) being activated and have an accident!

Failure of the antilock braking system at speeds below 10 mph due to a buildup of corrosion on the abs sensors. repairs were not covered under warranty and cost approximately $145. vehicle had to be towed to the rapair shop after nearly rear ending a parked automobile. june, 2005: problem returned and is still not coveredunder warenty or vehicle recall even though a recall has been mandated by the canadian government to correct this problem. milage on the vehicle as of present time is approximately 53,500.

Transmission clunks into gear..had it seviced but they dont know how to fix it we have two silverado trucks doing the same thing

Back in the fall of 2003 i had an insodent with the abs brakes on my 2000 chevy silverado going crazy. when i would go to stop everything was ok till the truck hit 5 miles and hour then they would activate and at times would not stop. they would also lock up and the truck would keep moving with my foot on or off the brake pedal. the only way to stop it was to ease off the petall and hit the pedal hard and at times this would knot work on the first try. i took the truck to my local goodyear service station and had them check it out. they did not see a problem with the abs sytem but they said that i need to replace the rotors becuse they were rusted very bad . i did that and a it did not fix the proplem. so i contacted my local gm delaership and asked them if they could look and see if there was any recalls or problems with the abs sytem that i was not informed off they said no there was not. while on vaction visting my parents in another state i went to a gm dealership and had them take a look at it and after hooking it up to the computer they said it could be the speed sensor or the abs module. so i had them replace the speed sensor and they also did some othere repairs on the truck as well but at this time i can not tell you what they done becuse i do not have accsess to the bill. and they told me that i needed to replace the front pads in about 3 to 4 months. everything was going fine then it started doing it again and it had been 3 to 4 months since i had the speed sensor changed so i took the truck to pep boys . at pep boys i had them check the front to replace the brake pads and they did so. this did not fix the problem. now i would take it back to the dealership to have them look at it again and replace the abs moduel but as of right now i have invested over $900 in this problem. i herd the abs module cost over $650 not to mention the diagnostic fee of$89 and labor. and i herd that there was a recall and i can not find out any information on it.

Turned into a convenience store and brake pedal was firm. crashed into a bollard next to building and dented front bumper.

Dt: the contact is having the same problem with tailgate that was recalled on other vehicles. the contact received a recall letter, but his manufacturer told him that this particular model is not in with the recall but he is having the same type of problem. the nhtsa campaign id number is 04v129000 the summary for the compalint is as follows: on certain pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles, the galvanized steel tailgate support cables that retain the tailgate in the full open (horizontal) position may corrode, weaken, and eventually fracture. if both cables fractured, the tailgate would suddenly drop and strike the top surface of the rear bumper. this is the same problem the contact is having with his vechile. the contact was having problems with his tailgate before the recall was even made. the contact was standing on his tailgate while it broke.*ak

Brake failure at low speed

Dt contact stated that all the vehicle's brake lines broke. when the brake was pressed it pulsated and the pedal went to the floor. *nm

Dt: 2000 chevy silverado, problems with brakes. when applied brakes they went to floor and had to pump brake pedal to stop. it took a long distance to stop. almost had several accidents because of this problem. replaced both hub assemblies on the front of the vehicle. at the cost of $420.42. mechanic said that they he had several repairs of this kind and brake sensor failed that was in hub assembly.

Abs brakes kick in during low-speed (less than 10 mph) braking. this is happening during every stop, sometimes resulting in the in-ability to stop the vehicle.

Consumer states: antil-lock brakes will kick in below 5 mph everytime. the brakes are fine. when pushing down on the brake the pedal will push back, and making pumping noise. when noise stops you regain operation of the pedal. it'll continue to move to extra 3 to 5 feet when trying to get vehilce to stop sometimes up to 10-15 feet.*ak

2000 chevy silverado z-71, 4wd, v-8 extended cab 31,000 miles. i purchased the vehicle used on june 24, 2004. in september, 2004 i noticed that the abs brake system would activate as i slowed (< 10 mph) to a stop. this issue began intermittantly but worsened as i continued to drive the vehicle. by jan, 2005, the abs would activate every time i applied the brakes at slow speeds (< 10 mph). no trouble lights came on. i did not have any accidents with this issue but had one very close call in a parking lot. this incident caused m to investigate and fix the problem. in late january, i had a gm dealer investigate the issue and they recommended replacing the left front hub assembly. given the high price the dealer was going to charge for the replacement part and the labor, i elected to purchase a replacement front hub assembly from a local auto parts store (autozone). i replaced the left front hub assembly per the vehicle's service manual directions. and the problem went away. the hub i removed was heavily corroded with signs that the seal on the inboard side of the hub was corroded with a portion of the excluder lips missing. i still have the hub assembly that was removed from the vehicle and would be glad to provide it for teardown inspection. in addition, i am a degreed mechanical engineer that works for a leading axle and driveshaft manufacturer and would be glad to discuss this serious safety issue further. i believe that seal failed and this allowed debris / corrosion to enter the hub assembly which then subsequently caused a signal interuption between the tone whee and speed sensor. thus, the abs system believed that the left front hub was not rotating and caused the abs system to activate. my issue is very much like the issue described in the may 27, 2005 issue of the detroit free pess titled "gm truck owners insist brakes are a problem".

I've noticed a number of recalls for my truck but i only received two (2) recall notices in the mail. one was for the front brake line and the other was for the straps for the tailgate. i am still waiting for the other notices to arrive. if they don't and something does happen causingi njury or death to myself and/or others the manufacter is going to have a really big law suit on their hands. it is not my job to find out about recalls it is yours and the manufacters job to notify me and others of these problems

I was in a head on collision and received a compound fracture to my right femur bone, 2 black eyes and fractured ribs due to the inactivation of the drivers and passenger airbag modules, also the steering wheel bent resembling an airplane wheel. my wife checked the internet after the incident and found there was a recall for the airbag module on the year of my 2000 chevrolet silverado truck. we were never notified of this before the incident, but are currently receiving updates today. do not understand why we were never notified of this. the truck is now in a storage yard and we are awaiting the response from the insurance adjustor.

My 2000 silverado pickup truck had the bad brake sensor in the front wheel. as i would roll to a stop the abs system would activate and i would have to push on the brake pedal with both feet to stop. i never got in an accident, but had several scary moments before the truck stopped. i got the sensor replaced and it fixed the problem gm should have covered the repair, it is a bad safety issue.

On more than one occasion, my 2000 chevrolet silverado (1500) pick up truck fails to stop at low speeds <20 mph. the cause is the abs brake system activates, regardless of road conditions and makes the brake pedal very "hard". at time of this complaint, service work has not be completed; therefore, i have no information on parts.

Rolled down passenger window to talk to neighbor, window would not go back up - became inoperable. had to take apart door and force window up after major snow storm. have not replaced at this time.

Truck woulc clunk and front end would jump when putting into gear and and turning. truck was towed to dealership in fear that it would break down. rear differential assembly replaced with used rear-end.

Wheels on 2000 chevy silverado were squelling and chirping while driving. truck has 54,000 miles on it. took truck to brake specialist who found all rotors and calipers badly rusted. 2 calipers were frozen up. they advised gm used rotors w/o chromium in them to retard rust. parts are being repaired at this time. estimated repairs just under $1900.00. i have asked for the parts to be given to me. updated 12/22/05. *jb

Stopping distance at slow speed is not alway as crisp as it should be. the abs sometimes come on, when it shouldn't. my local mechanic has been unable to fix this. why are the canadians treated as first class consumers and the amer- ican as second rate?

Since last summer, i have experienced a problem with the abs on my 2000 chevy silverado. this is the same problem that is currently being investigated by the nhtsa. while stopping, the antil-lock brakes activated on all surfaces (even on smooth, dry, pavement) below 10mph which incresases stopping distance.

My spare tire off of the 2000 silverado fell off the bottom bed and wound up 100 feet off the highway in the woods. the cable frayed on the attachment!

Could not get 2000 chev silverado z-71 safety inspection done due to parking brake not working. technician said he has failed numerous chev truck for this. local dealer said it was a mfg problem and would cost betrween $280 to $880 to fix and should have been a recall done on this model.

I am responding to the current investigation of the braking problem involving the abs sensor. i have a 2000 chevrolet silverado. vehicle. i called the dealer on 05/30/05 for the abs activation at low speeds when braking. the dealer recommended removing any rust from abs sensor surface for a cost of about $240. i get a pulstation kicking back on break pedal and are unable to stop. the vehicle in unfit to drive as is as i've come very close to hitting people and the rear ends of vehicles in front of me as i try to stop at intersections. this is a deadly situation and requires immediate attention to those who own this vehicle. if any questions, please contact me.

Starting in late 2001 the fuel gauge started fluctuating from full to empty and anywhere in between even after filling the tank. chevy service manager said this was a common problem with these vehicles and would cost about $400 to repair. since this is a common problem, chevrolet should be required to pay for repairs. *nm

I am responding to the current investigation of the braking problem involving the abs sensor. i have a 2000 chevrolet silverado. vehicle was purchased new in jan. 01. i took the vehicle to the dealer on 11/06/03 for the abs activation at low speeds when braking. the dealer removed front calipers and rotors and abs sensors and cleaned rust away from the mounitng surface for the sensor per bulletin #02-05-25-006a. problem recently returned when braking. you get a pulstation kicking back on break pedal and are unable to stop. last week i almost ran into front of a hollywood video store when pulling up. i had to press the emerengcy brake to stop. i was prepared because it also happen a couple of days before in another parking lot at the fitness gym. i replaced the abs sensor (driver's side) myself on 5/2/05. the cost of this was $120.55. dealership only had one in stock, wanting to replace them both because this is a known problem. just wanted to let you know that this a current problem and needs to be rectified. if any questions, please contact me.

04 v 129 000/tailgate support cable: while opening the tailgate, both support cables broke and the tailgate drop completely down. no injury was reported. the dealer was notified. the dealer informed the consumer that their vehicle vin # was not included in the recall. *nm *sc *jb

Contact stated: contact was having a problem with emergency brake. the emergency brake fell apart into pieces. the repair shop replaced the brake shoe pad and the rear rotors. also, the dealer had to replace the monitor speed sensor which indicated that the abs was over active. while driving 10 mph vehicle made a noise while hitting the brakes. it almost caused an accident when the abs was applied. *ak

This is in regards to today's newspaper article about the government's new investigation about gm's antilock brake problems with its trucks and suvs. my 2000 chevrolet silverado started experiencing antilock braking problems on december 2003. the problem was that whenever i braked slower than 10 mph, the brakes won't stop the truck until after it slowed down to less than 3 mph. the brake pedal would pulsate strongly. then at that speed the brakes would grab very hard. it was really annyoing and dangerous. for some time i nearly hit some cars ahead of me. on february 2004 i had the front hubs, rotors and brake pads replaced at a cost of $746.60 including labor at an independent repair shop. the warranty had expired over a year ago. the mileage on the truck was 85,000, but the truck was barely 3 years old. fyi, gm made a profit of about $8,000 when i bought the truck, according to industry publications. multiply that by 1,200,000 and you have a filthy profiteering company on your hands. i want my money reimbursed. i have never experienced such a safety problem in my life before. for settlement, i don't want a coupon for buying another gm truck at a discount. i want to be reimbursed! please do not settle for less! the detroit people must be made to see the errors of their ways and to stop profiteering at our expense!

Cosumor states: fog light in recess bumper a plastic piece in lower part of bumper the plastic piece brakes and light hangs there until it falls out. also, abs light sensor came on and took to dealer, they did test and said my system is deffective had replaced but had to pay some of cost out of pocket. the leather seats have also started to tear, and when starting vehicle sounds like a disel truck

June of 2004 contact states at 30000 miles the brake sensor went bad, brakes failed, dealer replaced brake sensor on left wheel then two months 32000 miles replaced front brake sensor, left and right. barely avoided crashing into garage due to vehicle. vehicle is regularly serviced and contact has service records.

My truck experiences abs activation at low speed as described in news releases about the government investigation. i have not had it repaired, but do still drive it daily and this brake activation happens everytime i drive it. it is a 2000 cheverolet silverado. also, the tailgate does not latch properly. please advise me as to what action i should take and is the vehicle safe to drive.

When coming to a stop at slow speeds (less than 3 mph) my anti-lock breaks activate and increase my stopping distance. this has resulted in near accidents in parking lots and in almost causing the vehicle to hit the closed garage door of my house. the condition occurs repeatedly (everytime) on all types of surfaces including dry smooth pavement. no service lights or brake warning lights were illuminated. to correct this problem at minimum expense i have pulled the abs fuse to inactivate the abs system. the problem has never reoccurred with the abs fuse removed. neither general motors or its dealerships have been contacted with this problem since it occurred outside of the warranty period.

On numerous occasions starting approx. 1 1/2 to 2 years ago, the brakes on my 2000 chevy silverado 1500 act up when pulling up to a stop sign, or otherwise braking under normal conditions to a stop. after reading this morning about the investigation launched into the brakes, i realized that this is what is happening to me. i haven't had any accidents, but in that moment i push the brake pedal as hard as i can, and the truck just doesn't stop. the anti-locks kick in, but it is a very scary feeling as it adds stopping distance. i asked the dealer about it, and got a kind of non-answer, so i still have the problem occasionally. something is definitely not right; it's unlike anything i've ever experienced to date.

Brake pedal became very hard, truck became hard to stop under 5 miles per hour.the problem occured more often,once for every three stops. the truck was taken to the dealer for repairs. the antilock brakes were found to be faulty. a speed sensor was replaced in each front wheel. cost of repairs was $400.

While driving at approximately 25 mph cable that holds the spare tire in position at the base of the vehicle snapped inadvertently. the tire fell from under the vehicle into traffic.*ak...a car behind consumer's vehicle was alert to see the tire coming, stopped and avoided hitting tire. *ak

Very difficult to apply brakes with vehicle speed between 5 and 10 mph. pedal was extremely difficult to push. trying to apply brakes a buzzing noise is heard from the front of the vehicle. using both feet to push the brake pedal was able to stop vehicle. no abs or brake warning lights were illuminated. incidents happened on the road as vehicle slowed in traffic.

I to have had multiple problems with the brake /abs system.right know it is non functionable because of a $1500 failure of the pump/ebcm.the stopping distance is horrible and the failure of gm to acknowledge and repair the engine noise(piston slap)is unacceptable.

I see that the nhtsa is currently investigating gm brake failure problems and i would like to relay my recent experiences with the failure of my brakes. i was on vacation back in early april when the abs warning light illuminated and stayed on. i took the vehicle to solomon chevrolet for diagnosis. i was informed that the brake traction control module (btcm) had failed and the repairs would cost approximately $1100. i elected not to have the item repaired at that time due to the cost involved. after returning home, on 4/26, the entire brake system warning light illuminated and stayed on. i took the vehicle to dundee chevrolet and was informed that not only was the btcm defective, but also the hydraulic actuator. in addition they stated that i needed both front and rear brakes replaced (pads and rotors). they said that my brakes were falling apart. total cost for the repairs would be $3031.00. after contacting gm they offered to goodwill the btcm and hydraulic actuator, but i still had to pay for an entire brake job. eventual cost was $1566.00. i am extremely disappointed and amazed that i suffered a catastrophic failure of the brake system after only 42000 miles. unbelieveable.

Have not wrecked yet but have had many close calls because my truck needs a longer stopping distance because of the anti lock brakes. numerous times i have almost hit vechicles because i could not stop. reported the problem to gm and to my dealer they tell me they are looking into the problem. in the meantime they tell me to clean the sensors on the antilock brakes. this does not work. still have the problem. this problem started about a year ago.

Over the past 3 years i've experienced failures while braking. after having the dealer check this problem he advise me to replace hub and bearings. at my cost..... this hasn't fix the problem. last winter i slid through several intersections. at slow speeds i know now to forget about abs-ing and pump the hell out of the brakes. please note that the "incident date" is just a guess from last winter.

Re: antilock brake engagement at low speeds i own a 2000 chevy silverado ls 1500 4-dr, vin [xxx]. i have had it into a brake shop twice over the last 3 years for the antilock engaging at low speeds (3-5mph). the antilock alarm does not light up. i finally got disgusted when it started doing it again this winter and pulled the fuse for the abs system. both repairs were performed at the brake and alignment service center 1770 barlow, traverse city, mi 231-947-2600. each time they identified the abs sensor for a single wheel engaging inappropriately at very low speed. i do not have the exact dates of the repairs handy, but can get them from the above business if needed. the incident date below is my best guess at the moment for when this first started. i can tell you that there is great potential for low speed accidents at intersections with this defect. when the abs system engages, the vehicle does not brake effectively at all. the brake pedal has to be released briefly and then pressed again to engage the normal braking action. i can't count the number of times i have had to release and than stand on the brake pedal to stop in time without rear-ending someone. *js information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

Consumor states: control module for abs just went out. had to pump brakes. also. back rotor went out at 30,000 miles, and had to have a new one. *ak

Abs failing at low speeds. during braking, below 10mph the brake pedal locks up and fails completely. before it fails the brake pedal will chatter. abs fuse has been pulled in order to drive vehicle.*ak

After reading the newspaper of 05/04/2005, i realized my vehicle, a 2000 siverado, was involved in the nhtsa investigation #pe05020, low speed braking distance increase. on several occasions throughout this past winter, my truck just seemed like it didn't want to stop in what i thought was a sufficient distance. i had been told by my local dealership shortly after purchasing this vehicle in july of 2002, to either use my parking brake all the time or not at all because the components would rust and become inoperative. apparantly this problem has been known by gm for a long time. having read the news article, the further ramification becomes clear. i now know the a.b.s. system was too aggressive on slippery surfaces. the last time this happened, i was turning into my driveway and wound up in my front yard stuck, but with no damage. if i had been at an intersection on a public road, i might not be here to write this. the incident date and number of failures will be relative due to the frequency of this failure.

All of a sudden when trying to stop the vehicle will not stop. the pedal hits the floor but no brakes work. the truck has new rotors and pads on the back and front. we thought they were the problem but nothing changed after putting rotors and pads on. one time we pulled into a driveway and the truck would not stop and we hit the vehicle that was parked in the driveway, nothing was damaged.

Contact states: the throttle control closes. it was replaced when it first happened. the car had aprroximately 15000-20000 miles. the throttle control closes about every six months. this usually happens when trying to accelerate after foot is off the accelerator or a stop. when the vehicle is taken to the dealer mr.billy pays for it to be cleaned.

(hydraulic brakes) when the brakes were applied, the abs kicked in and the vehicle continued on. no warning given about the abs failure. the problem continued to get worse. the problem would also occur on dry road conditions with normal braking. this was an intermittent problem. *ak per invoice; the abs brakes would activate at slow speeds. the sensors had corroded. *sc *jb

The abs control module failed while driving at 50 mph. vehicle could be driven, but there were no anti lock brakes. abs light sensor stayed on until consumer tapped on control board box.*ak

In my 2000 chevy silverado 4x4 truck, without warning the brake pedal went to the floor as i was pulling into my garage and the vehicle did not stop causing minor damage to garage contents (shelves, stored garden equipment; no damage to truck). my mechanic could find no problem after inspection. brake failure occured twice more and then i went to the dealer mechanic. the abs error light never came on. i paid approximately $500 to replace driver side front abs sensor. this was in oct 2004 so the old part is not available.

Contact states: contact was driving vehicle slowing down to pull into a parking spot, between 7-10 mph, the abs engagement does not allow you to brake completely and come to a complete stop and the contact hit a guard rail. normal weather conditions. general motors being investigated for the brake problem. general motor refused to take care of the brake problem, they would take care of it but contact would be responsible for the cost. the service manager at a gm dealer said this problem happens approximately 30,000 miles. contact unplugged the anti lock brake system

Constant failure of my 2000 chevy silverado brakes. my abs was constantly kicking in every time i was trying to stop at slow speeds. as an example: in my driveway. my mechanic was informed of service bulletins by gm about corrosion in the sensor area. i had one sensor replaced, but it was stated that this will happen again, it was just a matter of time.

Abs warning light started coming on and off at random while driving. randomly when pulling slowly up to intersection to stop, antilock brakes would engage and vehicle would not stop but instead roll out into intersection. imediate fix was to release brakes and re-apply repeatedly to get vehicle to stop. long term "temporary" fix was to remove 60 amp abs fuse to disable abs all together. (found this solution on internet) read a tip on the internet that stated problem was with the speed sensors and corrosion or rust building up around sensors. removed both sensors and saw no corrosion. replaced sensors and am currently driving without antilock brakes. (abs light and parking brake light are now permanetly lit as a result of removing the 60 amp fuse.)

Consumer was informed by the dealership that the parts to perform the tailgate support cable recall 04v129000 weren't available, and he will be contacted when they become available. almost a year later, the dealership told the consumer he was no longer was eligible for the recall.*ak *jb *nm

Two chevrolet 1500 silverado pick ups, with emergency brake failure on both. *bf both of the vehicles had the left side brake internal expander band worn through and dragging metal to metal.

I am the owner of a 2000 chevy silverado 2500 heavy duty truck [xxx]my truck recently became disabled due to a malfunction of the power steering pump during the course of normal operation. i was returning home from running errands when i realized the truck was suddenly difficult to steer. i attempted to slow down and discovered that was difficult as well. i had no choice but to drive my vehicle home in this condition. i understand that there is currently a recall for certain trucks that contain similar or identical equipment. i have been in contact with customer service and was informed that my truck's vin is not included in this recall. following the conversation with a gm representative, i conducted further research. from what i can ascertain, the trucks that are included in the recall have the same hydro-boost system that my truck has. i fail to understand why gm is excluding a truck from its recall that has the same equipment and same crippling malfunction of trucks that have been recalled. i strongly feel that further inquiry is required in this matter. please reply at your earliest possible convenience. i anticipate that your investigation will result in my vehicle being included in the recall. thank you for your attention to this matter.*ak *js information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

I had to have the throttle body on my 2000 chevy silverado replaced due to the accelerator sticking. my mechanic informed me that there is a technical service bulletin out from general motors regarding replacing the throttle body when this condition occurs. i believe this part was defective, poses a safty concern and should be recalled by general motors.*ak

1999-2005 chevrolet and gmc silverado style extended cab pickup trucks. rear vent windows have a serious pinching hazard for children or adults with small fingers. the latches which open the vent windows have a cam latch that when closing the window,creates a pinching hazard. the latch flips through a scissors motion when closing , the outside of the latch flips inside of the bottom part(in between it). the hazard seems to be a magnet for childrens fingers as both of my children have been seriously pinched several times. when the finger is pinched in the latch it is pressed on by the outside force of the wind determend by the speed of the vehicle(pinching it even worse), my children had to push out on the window to release their finger from the latch when pinched. *ak

Chevrolet silverado 2000, unreliable, unsafe gas gauge. *bf the consumer stated the gas gauge fluctuated from 1/2 to empty and the information center read low fuel even when it was not low. *jb

The emergency brake on the consumer's 2000 and 2002 chevrolet 1500 silverado failed. reference odi no.10115302 for the 2002. *nm the left side brake internal band had worn through down to the metal. *jb

Recall campaign: one of the consumer's tailgate cable broke on his 2000 chevrolet silverado prior to recall notification. *nm *sc the cable on the left side is stretched again, however the manufacturer stated the consumer would not be covered under warranty because it was already taken care of as a favor. the consumer stated when it was repaired it was a temporary fix, because the used the same cables. *jb

I own a 2000 chevrolet silverado 1500 4x4. i purchased it used in may 2003. i like everything about the truck but this past year i have had trouble with my abs system malfunctioning. i had several occasions had the abs activate while the truck is going between 5-10 mph and came very close to rear ending another vehicle and also a tree at the end of my driveway. i have since removed the fuse from the abs circuit to dis-able this very dangerous situation. i recently notified chevrolet via e-mail and they instructed me to take my truck to a certified gm dealer for a diagnoses of my truck. i feel after reading several threads on chevy truck forums that this is a major problem with chevrolet trucks from the 90's to the newer trucks. i have also learned that gm has recalled trucks in canada but here in the states. i am going to carry through with taking it to a dealer and geting it diagnosed but i feel very strongly that this should be a recall in the usa also.

I was backing out of the parking spot i had been all day at work and the passanger front wheel would not straighten out. i could not pull forward or backward, i was stuck in the center of the parking lot. then have it towed to a repair shop to have it looked at. the tie rod had stripped and come off. the repair person told me that the driver front also was stripped and would have soon failed as well. they were both replaced and the truck was aligned. this was an unexpected expense, there was no indication by myself or my husband that anything was loose or coming apart. i was one block away from getting on the interstate to go home. as i understand it i could have lost control of my truck had the tie rod failed while i was driving.

Passengerside seat belt retracts and locks,the passenger. the belt must be unlatched and refastened. the seat belt does not seem to hold when the brakes are applied very hard. dealer has no way to check to see if seat belt is operating correctly. i was going to be charged for the replacement of new parts. they don't even know if the part is defective?*ak

I parked on a steep hill, applied the parking brake, and exited the truck. although the brake was set firmly the truck moved forward and struck the car ahead of me. damage was very minor to both vehicles. the parking brake has not worked properly since the truck was new.*ak

While driving, pulled out on to the highway, and consumer heard a loud noise. then, consumer pulled into a driveway to turn the vehicle around, and found out that had no reverse because transmission failed. *ak

While unloading the tailgate dropped completely down. no injury reported. the dealer was notified.*ak

Nhtsa campaign 00v055000; chevrolet issued an abs spring clip recall. this vehicle is not included in the recall, but the abs was not operating properly. this vin is outside the remedy scope. *jb

The brakes are not working properly. the abs system is being engaged when you stop and increases the stopping distance. the accerator sticks. you have to push hard and then all of a sudden it make the truck leap forewark or backward.*ak

Recall campaign 02v078 00 concerning air bag sensing module. consumer's vehicle was involved in a rear end collision, it crashed into another vehicle in front at 50 mph. upon impact, neither frontal air bag deployed. consumer sustaine dinjuries, and was transported to the local hospital by ambulance. dealer and manufacturer were notified. *ak

I noticed that the transfer case was leaking fliud. the truck was going in for a recall in the steerinng pump. so i asked the dealer to check where the leak was coming from. the dealer called me and told me that the transfer case had a small hole in it and it would be $1,200.00 to fix it. i brought the truck home and looked at the transfer case myself. the transfer case did have a small hole in it. i was going to put some jb weld on the hole for the time being. until i could afford to have the transfer case fixed. when i touched the hole with my finger i noticed that the transfer case had really weak medal in that area like when it was made it was not made right. i have been talking to gm about the problem they are tring to decide if the transfer case failure is there fault or if the truck has been beat on. i have only used the 4wd one time in the last 9 months that i have owned the truck the people that had it before me took really good care of the truck. i am really upset that chevrolet's do not last more then 5 years.*ak

While driving and trying to park the vehicle depressed the brake pedal and vehicle surged. consumer has had the rotors replaced at 32, 000 miles all around the vehicle. dealer told consumer that the calipers were working about 50%. *ak

Gas guage appears to have a short in it,when tank is fullit jumps back and forth. truck had 89k at that time to replace it it was quoted 350-400. this appears to be a lemon in workmanship,or poor quaility material. i have spook with other who have the same problem.*ak

While applying the accelerator pedal consumer stated that he had to apply more then normal pressure to get the vehicle to move. the dealer was not notified.*ak

Consumer states that upon coming up on a stop the vehicle will continue to coast almost causing an accident a total of two times. consumer states that it has the very same problem as gm states in the recall for the brakes. please provide any further information. *nm

The brakes on my truck do not stop the truck in a reasonable distant. when i pulled off the wheels you could see where the pads on the front wheels were almost gone, but the rear shoes were hardly worn. i did change the front pads. i also have the sticking gas pedal problem which i have had the dealer work on with no results.

While applying the brake pedal, the vehicle failed to stop completely. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection. the mechanic informed the driver that the rotors and brakes needed to be replaced. please provide further details. *jb

Erratic reading on fuel gauge

After filling the vehicle with fuel, the fuel light comes on to say low fuel, the gauge goes to empty. the consumer is concerned the fuel tank may cause a vehicle fire. *nm

While driving 20 mph consumer's vehicle was involved in a frontal collision. upon impact, both frontal air bags failed to deploy. vehicle was towed to a garage for inspection. the cause had not been determined at this time. this information was provided by ricky's wife karen flimp. *ak

The event was a car pulled out in front of me which still hit the driver's side of my vehicle (2000 chevy silverado). then my truck had a full frontal impact at greater than 30 mph into a dirt wall in which neither the driver's nor passenger's airbags deployed (the truck is totalled). i hit the steering wheel and got a concussion with blood around the brain, a broke cheek bone, and fractured hip. my wife was 33 weeks preganant at the time and her water broke and she got a compound fracture in the lower leg/ankle. as a result of the water breaking my son was born 3 days later 7 weeks premature. as for what was done to correct the problem i'm hoping it will at least be investigated to make sure this is not a systemic problem (i.e. software screwup something not hooked up right in the airbag system etc). i have pics of the truck and the crash site i can send if necessary. i can also provide the location of the truck so it can be inspected.*ak

I have owned this truck since dec 2001 the fuel gauge has worked on and off since then it will work fine then when i fill the tank it will read no fuel and the low fuel warning light will come on until it gets down to about 3/4 tank the it will start working again. if i am sitting idling the gage will go to zero then will slowly creap back up when vehicle is moving. also have problem with gas pedal sticking. i have to remove air cleaner hose and lube throttle body butterfly to un stick it about once a month. *nm

The accelerator pedal sticks when starting out, causing too much throttle and surging when the pedal finally breaks free. this is especially dangerous in traffic or when roads are slick. *jb

When opening the tailgate owner noticed the straps wore out prematurely. a recall was issued, however this vehicle was not included in the recall due to vin. *ak dealer refused to repair the consumers tailgate support cables. *tc

I have a 2000 chevy silverado with 42,000 miles and my brake rotors are severely rusted. this is an unsafe condition and clearly a defect in metallurgy. i am astounded to find thru my dealer (midway chevy olds) that gm is not standing behind this defect. i found through web research that many other owners had the same problem. *jb

When driving under 10 mph on dry pavement, the abs activated and it became hard to stop the vehicle. the vehicle has not been serviced for the defect since the consumer has to pay out of pocket. *jb this was a regular problem. *sc *jb

While working on my property, i was driving up a hill in my backyard when my power steering went out while i was passing through the gate of my fence on my property causing me to impact the gate corner post. because i was in a turn exiting through the fence, i sustained a substantial dent to the left side of my truck bed and to the right passenger door. i jacked the front of the truck, the steering wheel moved freely, no damage to the front end. i called the nearest dealership which was a gmc dealer, they indicated that i probably had a power steering pump failure. i brought it in and they confirmed that the pump had failed. they had to replace the pump and flush the system, and had the drive belts replaced while they were working in the area. also had the dent on the left side repaired but did not repair the dent on the rh side due to the cost to do both sides.*ak

While driving, there was a noise coming front the front of the vehicle. the consumer replaced the brake pads. the problem still existed and the dealer replaced the bearings and sensor.

The brake pedal wentl all the way to the floor at 10 miles per hour making it difficult for the vehicle to stop. the consumer stepped outside the vehicle and noticed that there was brake fluid on the ground and brake hoses. taken in for checkup and results showed that the brake line was torn and needed replaced. *tt

When driving below 10 mph vehicle will loose the abs braking. brakes work intermittently. consumer struck the garage when the brakes failed, and at other occurrences a vehicle.*ak

Recall campaign 04v129000 concerning tailgate support cable. consumer received notification from the manufacturer in regard to this recall. consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, and was informed that hew would have to repair the defect himself. the service technician fixed one cable, and handed the second cable to consumer, telling him that he would have to fix it by himself. also, they claimed they were not a body shop, and he would have to get this fixed on his own. *ak

Chevy, has redesigned a clip in the park brakes on the 2000 silverado trucks. the original clip was found to fail when driving on rough roads. this allowed the park shoes to rub the drum. this caused the park brakes to fail and forces the owner to replace both drums and buy the redesigned clip. this should have been recalled! there are tens of thousands of trucks out there with no emergency brake. *jb

While the vehicle was parked on a slight incline with the emergency brakes engaged vehicle has rolled backward and hit a travel trailer. vehicle was taken to the dealer, who adjusted the emergency brakes. within two month or less the problem has recurred again. the dealer was notified again.*ak

Intermittently the brake pedal hardened after applying the brakes several times while driving. this caused extended stopping distance, and vehicle did not stop. vehicle was taken to the dealer, who replaced both rear drums and brake pads. however, the problem recurred. *ak when the consumer turns the vehicle at a 90 degree angle the brakes only go down about 1 or 2 inches and are hard to push down any further. the brakes do not stop the vehicle. the consumer had to stomp on the brakes 2 to 5 times for them to stop the vehicle. *tc

I have a 2000 silverado with 4.8 & a manual transmission. started hearing noise with clutch disengaged & in neutral. dealer says bearings in trans are shot . vehicle has only 67,000 miles. i've changed the fluids religiously on this vehicle never towed anything. i never heard of a manual trans failing this early. dealer says that sometimes you get a bad one. *jb

Failure of service brakes which resulted in a crash (low speed). caused by corrosion of speed sensors. repaired by dealer (cleaning of speed sensors). dealer repair manager explained that the problem has occurred in past and another similar incident occurred a few days after this one, involving another chevrolet truck. dealer further related that the manufacturer is aware of the problem however has only issued a bulletin on how to repair at owners cost (approx. $400.00 without replacement parts, only labor). *nm

Air bag failed to deploy, after minor side impact. *bf after traveling 20-30 feet away from the side impact crash site the consumer frontal impact crushed her vehicle. neither the front or the side airbag deployed. *tc *jb

The tailgate straps snapped in half without warning. two years later a recall was issued on the same part. however, dealer stated this vehicle was not included in the recall due to vin. *ak both tail gate straps were replaced. *tt

Fuel throttle hang-up since purchase in 2000. dealership performed carbon cleaning 3 times however issue does not rectify. must "pop" at the fuel pedal in order to get the vehicle moving thus causing a lurching forward of vehicle. no further help offered by dealership or chevy corporate but to continue to have carbon cleaning ($85/service).*ak

Was backing a trailer into a barn on level ground ,power steering and power brakes failed with no warning. repair has not been done yet. *jb

When applying the brakes at a low speed, the brake pedal forcde itself back up and caused severe extended stopping distance. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the dealer informed the consumer that the front speed sensor needed to be cleaned. both speed sensors were replaced. *tt

The vehicle came to a rolling stop at about 5 miles per hour, the abs check light illuminated when the brakes were applied. owner will contact the manufacturer. *jb

The rear rotors had to be replaced because of premature deterioration. the consumer contacted the dealer and the manufacturer, and there was nothing they could do. *ak the steel was bad. *sc *jb

The pressure line from the reservoir has a hole where the line passed near/behind the battery. it appears to have been burned or eaten away from touching battery. *bf while driving through a storm the windshield washer had become inoperative. the consumer also discovered that when the washer was engaged, it would spray washer fluid all over the battery. *sc *jb

I have two general motors vehicles. a 2000 silverado truck and a 97 olds silhouette. both of these have v6 engines and now i am being told that both of them have intake manifold leaks. the antifreeze is leaking outside of the intake, and in the case of my truck, probably into the engine. i am being told three different mechanics, that this is a very common problem with the v6. and after voicing my complaint, found that my brother-in law, has had the same problem. i called the general motors number in the manual and told them that i was upset with the problems and they said that because one is a 97 with 62000 miles, it is two old and that my truck has to many miles (112000). yet everyone tells me that it is the plastic intake manifolds that gm uses that is the problem. *nm

While applying the brake pedal, the brakes failed. the driver applied the brake pedal, numerous times and the vehicle failed to stop completely. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection. the mechanic can not duplicate the problem at this time. please provide further details. *nm

While driving consumer heard a loud popping noise, transmission failed. there was a part within the transmission called a sun shield. the first time transmission failed at 83000 miles, and then again at 135, 000 miles. *ak

Accelerator sticks in idle positions and requires great force to depress resulting in the vehicle lunging forward or backwards depending on gear selection...extremely dangerous situation when in tight areas.*ak throttle body was replaced while still under warranty, but same problem has reaccurred. this is a problem that gm should correct, as it obviously is not an isolated problem.

There were no unusual events leading up to the failure of the anti-lock braking system in my truck. the system would fail to operate properly at approximately 5 mph when coming to a stop. the failure is that the system engages unnecessarily at low speeds, causing the vehicle not to stop when desired. it would happen several times daily, and the only crash i did not avoid was into a chain link fence, which did not cause damage. however, there were several near misses. the corrective action that i took was to remove the fuse for the anti-lock brakes. the corrective action that my dealer suggested was to spend $500 replacing the front wheel speed sensors. he said that this is a common occurrence on the chevrolet silverado, and that my problem would only get worse. gm has issued a tsb on this issue, but not safety recall. i feel that since i have lurched into busy intersections, lurched forward in crosswalks, and come close to crashing into other vehicles while parking, this should be regarded as a safety issue.*ak

Consumer stated gas gauge was defective. it indicated more gas than what was actually in the tank. consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, and they were asking $348.00 for repairs. *ak the consumer stated that the vehicle ran out of gas while in traffic while the gas gauge indicated 3/4 of a tank of gas. *tc

While applying the brake pedal brakes failed. however, consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and drove it to a garage for inspection. mechanic determined that the wheel speed sensor needed to be replaced. *ak

Vehicle was taken to dealer for replacement of brakes and rotors. few weeks later, the abs light illuminated. consumer took vehicle back to dealer, and was told that brakes needed to be replaced again. cost would be $400.00 since it was not under warranty.*ak

Consumer's vehicle was involved in a head on collision while driving at 25-30 mph. upon impact, air bags did not deploy. recall 02v178000 was issued. manufacturer was not willing to assist the consumer. *ak

I was driving my 2000 silverado 1500 pick-up truck on dry pavement, as i was about to make a left hand turn going less than about 10 mph, i tried to brake. the anti-lock brakes engaged and all i could feel was a rolling sensation when i was depressing the brake pedal. luckily, i had time to lift my foot off the brake and push down again, this time the anti-lock brakes did not engage and i stopped inches from the vehicle ahead of me. there could have been a serious accident. *jb

Consumer received mfr recall 04007, nhtsa recall 04v129000 concerning tailgate cables. no parts were available. service manager michael page. *ak

Intermittently when braking, the brake pedal felt soft and caused extended stopping distance. *jb

While driving and upon depressing the brake pedal it felt as if there was air in them. had to push down harder than normal stop the vehicle. the seat belt began to tighten to the point where it was hard to breath. the consumer had to unfasten the belt to release the tension. *ak *nm

The brake lines rusted, and brake fluid spilled on the floor while vehicle was parked in the garage. the brake line was discovered to be corroded and the parking brake did not work.*ak the consumer stepped on the brake pedal to put the vehicle into drive when the brake pedal hit the floor. the consumer then hit the parking brake which also hit the floor. the corroded lines leaked between the master cylinder and the abs unit. the consumer has the corroded lines in his possession. *nm

Daytime running lights keep burning out. i have order 9 lights over 2 years, after about the 5th light going out i'm assuming there is a lose of ground, or improper fabracation of the unit that holds the light in place, one way or another something is making the light to make a loud pop when it burns out, loud enugh to hear it over the radio.*ak

Since i bought my 1500 series truck i have had problems with the braking system which the dealer said they could not duplicate. on 10-21-04 while pulling into my work location my brakes failed to stop my truck and ran into a chain-linked fence causing damage to the hood, light lenses, and bumper. a couple days later my brakes failed again putting me in the middle of an intersection with a truck skidding toward me. i have just had my truck inspected and the dealer passed my truck. *jb

While driving and when hitting the brakes vehicle continuously kept moving. consumer took the vehicle to dealer to be looked at. however, the sensor light did not illuminate. found that it was the abs system. *ak

While driving cable broke underneath the vehicle that held the spare tire. was told by the dealer that the there was a recall on the tailgate with the same cable. consumer felt that this was the same problem with the spare tire cable. *ak

Excessive ticking and engine noice during cold start ups. i was told, by chevrolet service the ticking was normal but should not last more than 1 minute. however after diganosing the problem, it was discovered that my 2000 chevrolet silverado 1500 has a bad lifter. this after only 38000 miles. i filed a claim with chevrolet they refused to pick up any of the $1300. in repair costs. my truck has a vortex v6, which gm has been manufacturing in excess of 20 years. the bugs should be worked out by now, but after reading the numerous compliants, with regard to the same problem, the bugs clearly have not been worked out.*ak

While steering consumer noticed a loud popping and grinding noise coming from the steering column. consumer took vehicle to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that intermediate shaft needed to be replaced due to lack of dryness. but this vehicle was not on recall. *ak

I have started to experience a problem with my abs system on my 2000 chevrolet 1500 silverado. when the brakes are applied at slow speeds the anti look brakes will activate and braking is lost for a moment. upon further research i found that the cause of this is dirt getting into the fron abs sensors. i also discovered this is a very common problem for the silverado.*ak

I purchsed my truck used, however it was in excelent condition. shortly after i noticed that when ever i tried to stop the anti-lock brake would come on for no reason. even if i was only rolling to a stop. the anti-lock brakes would activate and actually prevent me from coming to a smooth controled stop. finally it got so bad that i was nervous about driving the truck. i brought the truck to the shop. they told me that there were no recalls for the truck. however they did tell me that there was a parts change order. apparently chev. has issued new wheel bearings for my truck. the type installed at the factory are no longer available. this is a very dangerous condition. i feel that chev. is aware of the condtion, hence the new part, and should recall the truck. the bearings in my truck were replaced and the problem has stopped.*ak

The abs system operates at low speeds (5 to 10 mph) on dry pavement resulting in extremely long stopping distances. i called my dealer and they are well aware of the problem. they clam that it is due to a batch of faulty sensors that gm was supplied. so why should the consumer get left holding the bag. why is no recall being done to correct this issue. i feel that an investigation is strongly needed. this is oviously a manufacture defect (extremely widespread). *ak

While driving at a low speed brakes failed. the emergency brake was the only thing that stopped the vehicle. repairs were made on the hub. after repairs brakes failed again, consumer's vehicle rear ended another vehicle. *ak v

Continued knocking from steering column. truck was taking to dealer under warranty where the claimed that the noise was from the upper intermediate shaft lack of grease. they then greased the shaft which worked long enought to take the car out of warranty. now the knocking is back and gm now saids that the shaft they greased needs to be replaced with an updated one. all gm did was to rigged this steering shaft long enought to take it out of warranty. they now want several hundred dollars for repairs. also the engine in this truck knocks and pings like a diesel. i have to use premium gas and the knocking and pinging is getting worse. gm claims this noise is normal for this engine and brushed me off saying they could do nothing about it, its normal.*ak

My abs has been acting up, i.e. engaging when it shouldn't. tonight, i was forced to come to a fast stop and pushed the brake in. the abs engaged, but then stopped and the pedal went to the floor, therefore i had no brakes. i rear-ended another car with a 17 year old girl driving. she ended up being taken to the hospital. i am curious to know if there are other cases such as this, including brake failure and abs problems. my vehicle is a 2000 chevrolet silverado 1500. i have 106,000 miles on it and have had minute braking issues for the past year or so. i hope that is this is an issue that it can be addressed. that way no more seventeen year old girls get hurt, and no more 26 year old males (myself) have to worry about them or the safety of others due to this type of failure. as far as the question about oem, if that means aftermarket equipment, then no, all my equipment came on the vehicle when i purchased it and nothing has been altered in any way.*ak

Consumer has a concern that the fuel pump terminal is over heating and the connectors are loose. problem was repaired by the dealer at 35,000 miles. at the present time of 48,500 miles the problem is recurring. please provide further information. *jb

Upon pulling into driveway consumer applied the brakes and the pedal began bucking. consumer was not able to stop the vehicle, and it collided with parked vehicle. abs warning light failed to warn consumer that a problem occurred. the problem was caused by rust developing on abs sensors. the problem was more prevalent while driving between 5 to 10 mph. *ak

While driving down hill, the anti lock brakes failed and the vehicle began to slide. the driver could not get the vehicle to stop and it rolled down and over a hill. the vehicle was totaled. this vehicle was involved in a brake recall for this year, make, and model. nhtsa recall campaign 00v345000; brake line chaffing. *jb

Anti-lock brakes activate right before the truck comes to a complete stop. this increases the stopping distance by several feet. it happens very often and only happens during light braking never under heavy braking. *jb

The consumer took vehicle to dealer for brake inspection, and was informed that the rotors were completely rusted. the consumer contacted the manufacturer, and was told that warranty expired, and there was nothing they could do. also, the vehicle had only 37,000 miles since the brakes were serviced, and the rotors were completely destroyed. *ak the brake pads were worn and the front were severely blackened. the power brakes and the power steering pump failed. *sc

Locks will lock without warning. when attempting to unlock from the outside with a key it will not unlock. *ak door lock would not unlock from the inside nor the outside with key, hand, or electrical. *tc

Battery connection leaked battery acid on the braking system tubing.*mr the acid leaking onto the brake lines caused the brakes to fail. the dealer indicated that this was a common problem with these batteries. *nm

A loud squeaking noise was heard coming from the rear. the consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and drove it to the dealer. the mechanic determined that rear brakes and rotors needed to be replaced. *ak while making a sudden stop the consumer noticed that the brakes were not responding properly. the consumer then noticed the rear brakes making a squeaking noise. the consumer moved the rear wheels, brake calipers and rotors and found a metal surface where the brake pads deteriorated. on the drivers side rotor, the pad was wearing on 3/8 inch of the metal surface. the consume knew of others with the same make/model/year with the same problem. *sc *jb

Faulty fuel gauge, jumps from full to empty when truck is idleing and during driving. talked with other owners and to large companies that use chevy trucks and found out that this problem only exist with the chevy's and not gmc counter part. there should be a recall on this since this problem has been addressed since 1998. the dealership told me it was afuel pump issue.*ak

I have a 2000 chevy silverado 1500, about 4 months ago the problem started, when i am traveling at or above 40 mph the truck vibrates. you can feel this vibration thru the steering wheel and also when the 4 wheel drive is on and i turn the wheel to park the wheels seem as if they are resisting almost as if the whole wheel is just going to break this started last winter. *ak

1. passenger side doors (front & extended cab door) do not shut tight. the ex-cab door does not lock when shut, it must be closed several times before closing. if it does not close tight, both doors will fly open. 2. wind whistles inside from the unsealed doors.-- 3. drivers side door, wind whistles in due to not being able to be shut sealed tight.-- 4. trailer hitch will not close. the lock is stuck in an open position. *ak

We purchased a 2000 silverado 2500. there is a knocking noise in the engine. we took it back to the dealership to look at and nothing could be done about it. gm is well aware of the knocking noise in the vortex 6.0 engine. they told us that this was a common problem. it does not matter if it is a cold start or if it runs all day.*ak

Bought in 2000 brakes and all components have been replaced by owner at owners expense. brakes have a growling crunching sound on and off. the brakes will become disfunctual unless you compleatly release and immedieatly re apply.this has been an ongoing mechanical failure. at 11,000 miles this vehicle litterally "blew the front rotors into pieces.gm would not honor the repairs that i have continiously kept having to pay for.

Consumer received recall 00 x 001 000 concerning brake hose failure. consumer was concerned that the brake hose erupted while driving and rust build up on both front rotors.*ak vehicle was hard to stop when coming off a small incline. all four brake pads and rotors needed to be replaced due to rust. *ts

Fuel gauge is very irractic. shows low fuel even when tank is full. asked service manager about problem and he said it's a common problem with that vehicle and very expensive to repair, but you get a new fuel pump. should be recalled and repaired free by gm.*ak

In january 2004 my gas guage started jumping from full to empty.when you give the gas tank a gentle hit with your hand, the problem goes away. i have read that many other gm owners have had this problem. i don't go to the dealer because the technicians do poor work. i use the trip odometer and filled up the gas tank at 300 miles. i believe there should be a recall. somebody could run out of gas in a very dangerous location.*ak

Spare tire tools not correct. i do not have access to my spare tire. female end of lowering tool not the correct size to engage the male end located at the end of the tube assembly. upon having a flat tire i was stranded in between towns.this would be very dangerous for for women carrying infants and young children. *ak

Fuel gauge does not read correctly the amount of fuel in tank. very dangerous for multiple drivers of same vehicle, especially for women with infants and young children. problem began as soon as i purchased the truck. problem occurs each time vehicle is driven. dealer wants $700 for repair. several owners of same model truck have described same problem. this should definitely be a recall for obvious reasons. *ak

While driving 45-55 mph consumer's vehicle was rear-end by a tractor trailer. pushing consumer's vehicle off road and into a ditch, front end first. upon impact, air bags did not deploy. *ak both the driver and the passenger sustained injuries. the driver injured his neck, back, hips and pelvis. the passenger injured her right shoulder, chest, back and hips.

Truck shifted into 3rd gear for no reason then would not shift back into 4th while on the highway almost causing me to be rearended. i purchased a this gm certified vehicle four month ago thinking i was getting a better than average vehicle. i spoke to a transmission shop and they said they they get a lot of the same problems and i would like general motors to repair it since they haven't fixed this problem with the 4l60 e transmission in the last 11 or so years they've used it. *ak

When taking off from a stopped position and coming to a stop there is a deep squeeking sound coming somewhere between the driveshaft and transmission. i was told by chevy garage there was a fix for the extended cab version but not my regular cab truck. it will eventually take money to fix because anything that squeeks is rubbing and will eventually wear out. it was a problem when i reached 15,000 miles and is still a problem and loud aggrevation at 61000 miles. it is even bad enough that when i come to a redlight or a stop sign people think i am beeping my horn at them. it has been four years and 46000 miles later and there is no fix for the vehicle to my knowledge. plus the tires didnt last 40000 miles the brake line had to be repaired the steering linkage is bad and when i had a cracked window replaced the person showed me that there was no seal placed around the window to keep it from leaking. so long chevy hello ford.*ak

Fuel gauge acts erractically. while idling it will drop to empty and low fuel light will come on, even if the tank is full. it usually goes back up after vehicle begins moving again, sometimes right away or sometimes it takes miles down the road. i took this problem to the dealer and they said it was a bad fuel level sensor,at a cost of over $300.00 to fix it. this is a 2000 silverado 1500 4x4 pickup. this seems like a problem with manufacturing to me and should be recalled. *ak

I own a 2000 chevrolet silverado truck, the past few months my fuel gauge has been erratic. the tank will show empty at times and full at others. you can't trust the fuel gauge. i have taken it to a local mechanic and was told this was a big problem with chevrolet trucks and that it would cost about $1000.00 to repair. i have spoken to other chevrolet owners with trucks and they too have the same problem and was told it would have to be repaired by chevrolet with an estimated expense between $1000.00 to $1200.00. this problem should be a part of the recalls for this particular truck. *ak

I own a 2000 chevrolet silverado 4x4. the abs brakes will engage at 5-10 mph when normal, light pressure is being applied to the brakes during a normal stop. the brake pedal will then depress fully when you are not expecting it to. this will increase the stopping distance and in some cases i have almost hit the car in front of me because you are not expecting the pedal to depress to the floor. the problem will occur 5-10 times a day and is becoming worse. i sent my vehicle to the dealer and wanted to take a test drive with a technician because no warning lights occured. when i was explaining the problem to him he knew immediately what it was. it is obviously a common problem with these vehicles and is very dangerous. i have searched recalls for the vehicle and this problem has not been recalled yet. i have only 42,000 miles on the vehicle and believe this is a serious safety issue and should be a recall.*ak

The consumer notice that the passenger seat belt would not retract. the consumer drove the vehicle to the dealer for inspection. the mechanic informed the driver that the seat belt retractor needed to be replaced due to worn parts. please provide any additional information. *nm

When the brakes were applied, the consumer felt a vibration in the pedal. the dealer examined the vehicle and claimed that the rotors needed to be turned and the pads needed to be replaced. the consumer checked the pads and rotors and found that the pads were ok and that the rotors were laminated and cracked. *la *jb

The electronic brake control module is failing on my 2000 chevrolet silverado which causes a failure in the abs. i contacted chevrolet and only offered 20% cost assistance even tough this appears to be a very common defect in gm vehicles.*ak

Brakes fail at low speed, try to go into anti-lock. changed complete brakes,rotors,pads etc. on all four(4) wheels of the vehicle. problem still exists. scheduled for recheck september 30/03 for review of hoses and lines also will put on computor for fault readings. truck crashed into a wood pile at our summer home no personnal injuries but some paint scratching. disconnected the fuse for the anti-lock brakes had no problem with brakes failing just that abs light and hand brake light stayed on all the time. put the fuse back in and problem still exists this is why it will be rechecked september 30/03 to read faults as they are still failing. very scarey when all of a sudden no brakes at low speed.

Recall no. #04v129000, tailgate support cable: the tailgate support cable has broken on the vehicle. the consumer received a recall letter but, the manufacturer insisted that the letter was not a recall letter. the manufacturer informed the consumer that an actual recall letter is due out this summer.*jb

My wife was driving the vehicle. she stopped at a red light, in rush hour traffic, in the rain. upon accelerating from the light, the throttle suddenly became stuck wide open. she pushed the clutch, took the truck out of gear and managed to pull safely to the side of the road. the cause of the incident, was the air deflector in the throttle body. it broke off and fell into the throttle, wedging it open. dealer blamed poor maintenance, using premium gas in the truck, and told her to "drive the sh*t out of it" the way it is. the truck has always had all scheduled maintenance as recommended in the owners manual. *ak

While driving and upon hitting a bump in the road tailgate dropped down and the belts broke. the tailgate and strap's were totally disengaged from the vehicle. *ak *nm

While driving 65 mph vehicle stalled. the dealership repaired the pcm fuse once but the problem recurred. *ak *nm

Factory battery with side-mounted terminals leaked acid onto wiper fluid well mounted below it causing well to crack and drain. dealer replaced the wiper well, but recommended i replace the battery as well. i replaced the battery myself (instead of letting the dealership do it) on may 17, but not before the old battery had once again leaked acid and cracked the new wiper fluid well. old battery casing was not cracked or otherwise damaged; acid appeared to leak directly out of the terminals. this appears to be a design flaw by either ac delco for the battery itself or by gm for not properly isolating the battery from vibration. furthermore, the foam "diaper" the old battery was wrapped in indicates that gm was aware of a potential leak issue for this battery. the foam does nothing to hinder vibration. most of my 40000 miles are highway miles, and i seldom go off-roading (unless the potholes on the interstates of sc count). ak

The fuel gage acts eraticly. it goes from full to low fuel to somewhere in between. it continues to act eraticly.

With only 52,000 miles on vehicle, the abs warning light comes on and stays on. i have been told by reputable service technician that the abs control module must be replaced at a cost of $690 for materials alone. i have also been advised the abs system is inoperable until this is corrected. i believe this is very premature for this type of problem to occur. *mr

The driver side tailgate cable broke, and the passenger side tailgate cable was hanging by some threads. also, passenger door will not unlock, and there was a delay in acceleration. *ak the tailgate cable was replaced with the same type that failed. the fuel gauge was not working properly. the fuel sender/ pump unit and actuator had to be replaced. *nm

The abs brakes came on when they were not suppose to while driving less than 5 mph and hit another car pulling into the driveway. took vehicle to the brake shop for brake inspection, and mechanic determined it was due to rust behind the brake sensor.*ak the dealer called the problem environmental and offered to pay 50% of the cost. the rust was located in an area that was suppose to be sealed. *nm

Had to replace rear u-joint. the dealer won't fix the slip yoke that has not been normal since they replaced the u-joint even though i've been there 3 times for that. my main complaint now is that the running lamps seem to go out too often.i see every other silverado (& maybe sierras?) on the road with one of them out!!! even though this doesn't cost that much, there should be a recall since there's thousands of gm pickups that have this problem. thank you.
