1999 OLDSMOBILE Alero

Within my 36,000 of driving from 50,222 to 86,119 my intake gaskets have been replaced twice. My rack has been replaced twice and will need to be replaced a third time. I am also aware that the rack was replaced while the previous owner had the car. Recently I realized why water was getting into my passenger side of the vehicle. The window seal is shifted causing the window to leak if the car is parked at certain inclines. This repair is not covered by my pre-owned vehicle warranty. All major repairs have been covered by my warranty and any additional costs have bee quote "eaten" by repair facilities.

While driving my vehicle home from work the engine support mount snapped. Once this part snapped my engine shifted and busted the power steering pump along with two of the three bolts that helped to hold the mount to my engine block. I was told that I was lucky my engine didn\’t catch on fire since my power steering pump busted and started to leak fluid on my engine. The engine support mount that broke was a $23 part through the dealer, but since it supports the entire engine and the engine shifted once it broke, it took out my power steering pump which is retailed at $315. The bolts that broke snapped off inside my engine block and had to be removed.

Wheel bearing wore out at 52000 miles. Battery terminal post broke off. Brake caliper melted at 51000 miles. Two power steering lines burst at 59000. The cost of the repair for the power steering problem is an estimate I got from a mechanic, but I have not yet repaired. I’m hoping for a recall before I take any action. My complaints are based on the fact that there’s no good reason for any of those things to need repair that serious. Aren’t wheel bearings and power steering lines supposed to last for a while?

Took my car in for a tune up and asked why it’s using so much gas. Was told that I have coolant leaking into my oil and it would cost $500 to repair. I even get an employee discount! I can’t have it fixed at this time.

This car has become nothing but a problem for me. I purchased it with 18,000 miles and few problems. However, issues began to occur shortly thereafter. The brakes on this car are horrible. I’ve went through THREE sets of rotors on the front because they get warped. I’ve had numerous mechanics inspect them and tell me the brakes weren’t made large enough for this car. I’ve ended up replacing the brakes on my own because I can’t afford $500+ dollars each time at the auto shop. In addition to the brake issues, the rack and pinion went out on the car last month, costing me more money. I was told this was a common issue with GM cars. A few months ago I also replaced both bearings on the front end at around 80,000 miles. I conducted research and discovered this is ALSO an ongoing problem with the Aleros. Last week I had to have the emergency flasher switch replaced because my turn signals were failing; however, my car is a 1999 and Oldsmobile didn’t issue a recall for this problem on the 99′ models! Just today, my alternator took a dive and I had to replace that for $150. This car is eating me alive in costs! It’s a lemon and Oldsmobile isn’t even in business and won’t do anything for me! I’d get rid of it but I can’t because I have an outstanding loan on it, so I’m essentially tied to this piece of junk until I can pay it off and trade it off!

The engine problem is the worst. Car has been in 4 times, all fuel injectors replaced, also the head casket, plugs and wires replaced. Problem still is NOT FIXED and has cost over $2000.00 thus far. NO HELP FROM GM HERE!!!!!!

SINCE WE HAVE PURCHASED THIS CAR FROM THE DEALER WE HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS.WE PURCHASED IT WITH ONLY 1460 MILES ON IT. WE HAVE HAD WINDOW LEAKS, POWER WINDERS NOT OPERATING, WINDOWS FALLING OF THE TRACK, WE HAVE REPLACED THE ROTORS, CALIPERS AND BRAKE PADS A NUMBER OF TIMES. THE WATER PUMP AND TRANSMISSION HAVE JUST WENT AND THE CAR ONLY HAS 52,000 MILES ON IT. WE SERVICE THE CAR EVERY 3000 MILES. THE CAR DEALER CLAIMS THAT THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO ABOUT IT. I WANT GM TO TAKE THE CAR BACK AND GIVE ME MY MONEY BACK!

Security light flashes when car is turned off and car will not crank while the security light is flashing. It has so sit about and hour before it will crank again. Also, my dashboard started fading and then started bucking up and peeling back. Now the portion that covers my passenger side airbag is coming loose revealing the black cover over the airbag.

reported to dealership problem with vehicle starting and they replaced the fuel pump-this didn\’t fix the problem-the problem is with the Passlock Theft System and the problem still exists-transmission slips sometimes when going from reverse to drive-vinyl on dash and doors started peeling after having the car for 1 1/2 years-battery wouldn\’t hold charge-replaced battery 3 times then the dealership finally replaced the alternator-have had stereo speakers replaced because of the poor quality of the factory installed speakers-all material on the inside is very poor quality

replaced water pump, intake manifold gasket,serpentine belt and had cooling system flushed.

Paint is peeling around the fender wells and on back doors. The paint has not been repaired yet.The power steering rack was leaking fluid and making a noise when turning the steering wheel.

On September 5th the car went hiss and caught on fire. The car burned for twenty minutes and is now totalled. Before that everytime the ac was used the car would stall. The cd player hardley ever worked. and in the seven months I had the car I replaced the breaks twice.

My main concern is that the dashboard of my 1999 Alero began to “melt” after only six years. I cannot believe that is yet to be recalled, as thousands of Alero owners have experienced the same rippling effect on the dashboards, as well. I have brought it to numerous body shops and dealers, and I have yet to find anyone who can even attempt to fix it. It frustrates me that even when something was obviously wrong with the craftsmanship (glue), it is not being paid for me.My back two power windows have also failed, and one of them will not even stay closed, anymore.

Inside everything is wearing. The windows has been Broke 3 times. It just comes down on it own. The car wouldn\’t start 3 or more times. In the shop For that can\’t find problem. Brakes don\’t work that Great. Weather stripping around windshield is warped. The paint is peeling, fuel system is bad with not Starting. The Alero is a bad car. I can go on and on about the problems I have. I only have 28050 miles on the car. I can\’t wait to get rid of the car.

In August of 2003, I noticed my steering was getting harder to work. Took to a mechanic, was told there was a leak in the steering fluid. August 2003, the horn began to work intermittently. April 2004, turn signal, emergency signals and bright lights no longer operational. Will repair July 2004. Took vehicle (July 2004) to mechanic with violent vibration when applying break. Was told the rotors were defective as well as wheel bearings and ceramic brake pads. Will cost at least $1200.00 to repair. Was told by GM and dealership, tough luck I was responsible for repairs, not them.

I was in a car accident Dec. 6 2004 where I rear-ended another driver. Although the front end of my car was completely demolished, and insurance decided to total my car, my airbag never deployed. I went to the emergency room and was released with a concussion and whiplash.The issue I’m having now is with the idea that a life-saving device that could have spared me much pain didn’t work. If the vehicle I hit would have been any bigger, I would have been injured much more seriously than I was.

I own a 1999 Oldsmobile Alero with a 3.4L engine. At a cost of $652.01, on 28-October-2003 I had service performed on my vehicle because I was loosing coolant at regular intervals and it was not leaking onto the ground. The severe cause for concern was after I had refilled my coolant reservoir, drove approximately 3 miles, and all of the coolant was gone. The temperature guage shot up to the red zone, and I pulled over immediately. I had the car towed to the dealer and they indicated that this was a common problem for vehicles with this engine. They replaced the intake gasket and I was on my way. A few weeks later I noticed the coolant level was low again, and I had to add more coolant. I took the car back to the dealership on 25-November-2003. They checked the car and said they could find no leaks. I continued to drive the car. Consistently, every 2 weeks, I was refilling the coolant resevoir. This has been happening until recently (February 2004). In late February 2004 I started losing coolant at a much faster rate, about 3 day intervals. On 2-March-2004 my car did not start the first 2 times I tried, on the third it caught. I decided to inspect the oil, using the dip stick, and found that the oil was a thick goo. This prompted me to call GM and the dealership to identify my options for having this problem resolved. I am frustrated, aggrevated, annoyed, among other things, and I fear that had this gone undetected, the oil would have gotten to a state where it would not have allowed the engine to function, perhaps leading to an accident. Not only do I fear for my safety, but I am concerned that having a severe problem like this \”fixed\”” only to find that it happens again will only lead to the samething happening yet another time. How many times will I have to have this problem fixed? Is this a recurring safety concern?”

I now have a coolant leak, I have had my battery and alternator replace, just today 5/15/04 bought the coil for the front wheel it broke – $100.00, my hazard button broke, I had to have the heat fixed it was not working. I only have 34500 miles on the car, I am very disapponinted in the car it self. I am not surprised that they went out of business.

I have spent thousands of dollars on this car.I got the car when it had 32000 miles on it 3 years ago.I now have 73000 miles on it and I have replaced everything under the hood except for motor going out,both front wheel bearings,and several brake problems.also window motor went out twice.now auto lock and trac off lights are coming on.I just had r/r lower intake manifold go out as well.Battery has been replaced three times in three years.

I had my car diagnosed in June 2004 for poor acceleration. I found out that the transmisson was completely gone. The cost totalled over $2000.00. I had the transmission replaced at an independent owner. At the same time, I found out that my car had an intake gasket leak. I have not had it repaired, but recently I went on line to see, if I could determine a lower cost for repair, when I came across all type of articles concerning GM and the intake gasket issue. Currently there are more than 7000 signatures on a website at www.petitiononline.com/GMcnsmrs/petition.html. It is awful that GM does not feel like they are responsible for this issue. Recently I spoke with a GM rep (Rema Tennison), and she informed me that they would not pay the cost of repair for this service. Apparently GM in Canada and Pontiac GM are reimbursing for this service, and when I asked her about it she didn\’t give me a full answer. I am so fed up with GM. I will never ever buy another GM automobile. They truly do not care about their consumers

First my trunk pops open every other time i start my car when it does start, my clock resets, also if i run my airconditioning during the day at night when my automatic head lights turn on my car tries to shut off in the middle of driving, also while driving my gages go wild and start to turn over all the way sometimes. I think my car has ghosts living in it. my heater and air conditioning has two speeds off and very high. the motors in both of my windows broke so have to have my windows taped up.When it rains and when i go in reverse my brakes like to deside not to work sometimes. the front, brand new sent from the factory fenders paint is pealing and bubbling. my powersteering doesnt work all the time and make a screaming noise sometimes. my car overheats too. for no reason.

Engine: 3.4L V6. The manifold gasket and water pump failed at approximately 40,000 miles. The dealer picked up the cost of the parts under their "goodwill" policy, but out of pocket cost to me was still over $800.The manifold gasket on my 2002 Buick Rendezvous, VIN 3G5DA03E52S528965 also failed and had to be replaced at 18,000 miles. This was done under warranty at no cost to me. This was also the 3.4L V6 engine. It is obvious this is a problem GM has known about for quite some time andhave not taken corrective action in a timely manner. An extension of the warranty on this engine is certainly called for. I have advised many friends to avoid purchasing a GM car with either the 3.1L or 3.4L engine.

Engine abruptly overheated, After immediately pulling over, the engine began smoking. Car was towed to nearby service center wehere it was discovered the engine lower intake gasket was faulty. This is the 2nd time this has been repaired, however the first repair was detected prior to car being disabled. 3.4L V6

DASH PAD CAME UNGLUED.

car engine compartment completely engulfed in flame after 5 mile drive to a shopping mall. Car was cruising parking lot looking for space when fire erupted.

Bought car on a Friday had the car Saturday morning the car went to making a noise. So early Monday morning I called and took the car up to them. And they said it was the alternator so they kept it. I picked it up late tues. Evening. Thurs. night the car when to knocking under the hood real loud it was not even driveable. So before 8;30 that morning I called and told them the problem and told them to they had to come get it. They sent the tower about 2;15 that evening. Monday morning I called and he told me that they were going to put another motor in it. So I called every day to see had he heard anything on the car and he told me the car would be ready thurs. So thurs. Morning when I called he told me he were going to call and call me back 3hours passed and I did not hear from anyone. So I called back and he told me he could not get in touch with the mechanic . so on my way to work me and a friend stop by there because they would not answer the phone. And he were outside when we made it. I told him I wanted to know about the car. He told me that the mechanic had to find another motor because that one was not right .plus I had payed a car note on the 2 and did not even have the car .I have been calling everyday and it is the same old thing now he is telling me that he do not know when the car will be ready. And Friday will 2 weeks they will be have had the car.

Bought 1999 Oldsmobile Alero GLS in Washington State on August 8, 1999 from Bellevue Oldsmobile Cadillac. Current Mileage: 46,901. The car has never been in an accident, but I have experienced a myriad of problems with the car. – Pulsating brakes – 06/03/00 – Mileage: 7,617 – Replaced front brake rotors with updated rotors per Technical Service Bulletin – under warranty.- Pulsating brakes – 03/16/01 – Mileage 15,013 – Rotors out of round, trued rotors, installed updated pads – under warranty- Pulsating brakes – 07/12/02 – Mileage 28,409 – Rotors resurfaced once, replaced rotors and deglazed pads – under warranty- Recall center console latch #00036 08/19/00 – Mileage 9,742 – Rear defogger inoperable & recirculation mode inoperative – 12/13/01 – Mileage 22,451, electrical failure for the rear defogger, & fixed recirculation – warranty- Bulbs not working – 03/23/02 – Mileage 25,411 – C/S RR Tail light, C/S LF Marker out, C/S License Bulb out, C/S RF Bulb out- Low Coolant Light on – 04/02 – Mileage 26,000 (?), drove into dealer and was told that probably during service on 03/23/02 that the coolant was drained, so they added more coolant and sent me on my way.- Low Coolant Light on – 05/18/02 – Mileage 26,839 – Intake seal leaking, replaced upper and lower intake seals & changed oil – under warranty- No Coolant, low coolant light on – 06/13/02 – Mileage 27,612 – Added coolant myself and took to dealer, replaced leaky water pump – under warranty- Squeak in RF engine area – 06/19/02 – Mileage 27,787 – Found loose nut on RF strut, and dry rubber on mount, lubricated & tightened strut mount-warranty- Squeak in LF engine area – 07/12/02 – Mileage 28,409 – Tech heard when driving with me, but later said could not duplicate, did nothing.- Squeak in LF engine area – 08/01/02 – Mileage 28,809 – replaced rear stabilizer bushing – said was ok. under warranty (squeaking continues – I gave up)- Battery dead – 06/04/03 – Mileage 36,600 (+) Called AAA, battery would not hold charge, bought new battery – $110 (+)- Vehicle Charge light came on – 06/09/03 – Mileage 36,865 – alternator not working, got new alternator & serpentine belt, cost – $577.56- Parked my car – 10 minutes later came back out, coolant all over the ground, low coolant on – 08/23/03 – Mileage 38,737 – filled reservoir w/coolant and took to only open car place, Goodyear and they had tested it for 3 hours and could come up with nothing. Charged me nothing since couldn\’t find anything.-Low Coolant light – 08/27/03 – Mileage – 38,787, had car all day found nothing – $62.74 for testing.- Transmission not shifting up – 06/03/04 – Mileage – 46,901 – had car for 8 days, removed transmission oil pan found large quantities of debris, found gear number 3 and four clusters are worn out. Needed to rebuild transmission with new gears, clutches and electronic control pieces. Also found P/S rack to be leaking and replaced that. In Dec 2001, P/S stopped working and I had trouble turning, then it seemed fine, but during the 12/13/01 check of the rear defogger, I told the tech, but when I picked up the car and asked, they said they couldn\’t duplicate it. I later noticed it was not written on the order, so I don\’t think they checked it. I have had trouble intermittantly over the last 2 years, but not ever as bad as in Dec 2001. The cost was $3,967.09. The transmission person (this was not through the dealer) told me that this transmission was the same one that GM was using in Cadillacs and they have had lots of trouble with it, but GM won\’t issue a recall since it happens after the 36,000 mile warranty is over.

Actually the car is deteriorating

A/C and heat function fine but the fan control knob will not turn on anything until the forth click so you can’t regulate the fan. It has to be full blast or off.The engine will cut out and run really rough and eventually turn on the low track light for some reason and then shut down the track system with the track off light coming on. Then after that happening the car will usually stall.The fuel system problem is similar to the engine problem. The car will start to spit and sputter and the low track light comes on and eventually shuts down the track system with the track off light coming on and it seem to happen at about 1/4 tank of fuel. The low fuel light has never been on or the tank empty the the time of this happening.The transmission slips and when you put the car in drive and push on the gas pedal the engine will rev up as though the car is in neutral but it’s actually in drive but the car doesn’t move until you let off the gas pedal and engage it again. Sometimes it takes several times of letting off and engaging the gas pedal to get the car moving.The brakes have been faulty for some time and taken in for service but never diagnosed with anything in peticular. When you apply the brakes the low track light comes on and the brakes will actually release and glide for 5-6 feet and eventually grab again. It also turns the track off light on when this occurs.The steering will lock when shifting the car from park to reverse, for example backing out of a parking place at the grocery store. You have to accelerate quite a bit and then it pops and releases.

A leak in the intake manifold that is allowing collant and oil to leak into the engine. It costs between $600 – $800 to repair and this is a faulty part in a majority of the GM vehicles. There was a service bulletin dated March 2003 that describes the exact details of the problem, yet GM has not offered its customers any remedies to the problem such as paying for the repair. I have maintained this vehicle with all required service work. I want GM to pay for the repair.

3.4L V6 PFI OHV 12V: Intake manifold gasket failure

2 driver side window motors have been replaced, dash pulled to correct corr electrical problems, no dash light, no high beam light, all withing first 6 months, 1-03 water pump replaced, and transmission slipping. only 21000. miles on the car..

1. persistant scraping noise from ft end since 10/21/01. Cavendar Mechanics evaluted problem 4-6 separate times w/ different prognosis each time, later determined transmission problems on 3/18/02. Currently still having same scraping noise and fluid(redish) leakage from underneath vehicle2. 3 window motors failed /repaired3. twice alternator failure/repaired w/2 seperate alts

The dashboard of this vehicle has been peeling since around 2005, and the headliner probably started dropping by the back window about the same time.I had the two front windows repaired in 2006- dropped down into the tracks and luckily I got them up and rode with them taped for quite a while before getting it repaired. The two back one’s are now taped and have been for some time. $800+ is a lot for me to pay to repair something the manufacturer caused. I feel this is a safety issue especially in snow and rain-try driving in cold weater and your window all of a sudden falls down, your windows fog up- and you can’t see anything!! Same with rain. After having the first two repaired and the guy telling me (at the dealership where it was repaired) that I shouldn’t have this problem with the new motors, it was a design flaw and they had redesigned the motors. Yeah- after that I wasn’t going to pay them another $800 to fix THEIR problem. They need to do a recall on all of these vehicles and fix these window motors at their expense, and reimburse the owners for any repairs they have had to do. The peeling dashboard and doopy headliner are just cosmetic, a result of GM going on the cheap- does affect the resale value of the car, but at this time, that’s a moot point.

On January 29th, 2010 I purchased a used vehicle from Reem Auto Trading. On January 30, 2010 they replaced the cv joint, it was bad and they agreed they would fix it. After taking it to their mechanic the brake system failed. I could not take it back on sunday the 31st because they were closed so I went back at nine am on the 1st they were just opening. They told me to wait till the owner came in so i took it to my mechanic while waiting. My mechanic said it was unsafe to drive that when the caliper was put back on they twisted the pressure hose and cause it to break. I took the car back to the dealer and they sent me to a shop where there friend worked then tried charging me for half of the repair. I tried to call the owner to ask why I had to pay for it and he told me to not call him again and hung up the phone. I filed a small claims and have court on march 9th but have to go five weeks without a car I paid 3000 dollars for. Is this his responsibilty to fix seems it was his mechanics fault, it had brakes when I bought it? Do I have I chance at winning my case? Should I leave the car at the shop they sent me to, or should I have it towed? It’s not drivable…

Gas Tank Leakage…did this get recalled? I have never had a used car that had this.

Problems with 1999 oldsmobile alero transmission.*mr recently the consumer's car began to make a very loud noise from the transmission. the vehicle was checked by the dealer who determined that a pin broke in the overdrive gearshift and sent parts into the planetary gear. *nm

1999 oldsmobile alero. consumer writes in regards to ignition switch replacement and seeks reimbursement for ignition switch recall repairs. *smd the consumer stated there were no other keys on the key chain. however, the key would often fall out of the ignition switch while driving down the road and what was more disturbing, the key would come out of the ignition in any position. numerous times the ignition would not turn off completely which caused the battery to die. *jb

Front drivers side coil spring broke causing it to rub against the tire causing the tire to blow out while driving! this happened on a country road while driving at 40 mph! *tr

When i got accident november 3 2004 and airbag not come blow yet. i got injury head and broke leg on right.

I want to report the ignition switch on a 1999 olds alero v6. i have replaced the ignition switch on my car 3 times now since aug. 2013. there has to be an electrical issue becasue my security light come on and my air conditioner does not come on. so i had it tested and its not getting any electrical to it to come on. and that is exactly the way it happens evertime. so i was wondering if there was a recall or would they be one in near future.... becasue i dont 300-400 everytime it goes out.

I had the recall done but my car keeps dying and when the car is running i can now remove my key and engine stays running. the security light comes on all the time and i have to sit and wait at least 10 min for car to start. i have a baby and with this cold weather plus being stranded is not safe. i was told all the dealer did was a new key/insert. the whole ignition lock assembly should be replaced under a new recall. the dealer told me for $100 diagnostic fee that could look at the car. never did this until the dealer did the repair. *tr

When trying to start the anti-theft light comes on and blinks you must wait 10 mins to restart and sometimes the vehicle will start or you have to wait the recycle till again. gm did a recall on the key itself to add a hole in the key for the weight situation, but did not help the ignition problem of starting this vehicle. my question is why hasn't this problem been address yet? i have several complaints on this problem. *tr

I have a 1999 olds alero and am just now getting a recall for the key switch. as soon as i got it i took the car to the local dealer. i was told they are out of parts and my name was put on a waiting list. i was also adived it may take three to four weeks. i also asked if the car was safe told rive and was told yes. if the car is safe to drive why the recall. if there is something wrong with the key switch how can it be safe to drive. why doesn't the dealer have the parts and why should it take three to four weeks. what happen during the wait time if there is and accident and someone is injured or killed. why does the auto dealers play games with our lifes. please look inot this or at least file this complaint, then if i am in an accident before they fix it i'll have prove i filed a complaint. also i had to put brakes for the car part it would not take key switch, which is what the problem is. so disregard brakes. *tr

I received a recall notice and have been trying to get the problem corrected. i made an appointment with bob stall chevrolet here in la mesa, ca. they kept my car for an hour and lied to me and after waiting with no response for an hour, i went to retrieve my car and was told i had to pay $50 to get 3 keys as my keys were not the right ones. i have owned the car for 13 years and have used the keys given to me when i purchased the car. they have always worked and i have never had different keys made. i retrieved my car and keys and came home. since that time, i have called the customer assistance center twice----both times i was told someone would call me back in less than an hour. i received no call backs. i then tried calling the vehicle safety hotline and was told by two different agents that someone would call me back before the end of business. i have yet to receive a call back. is there someone out there who can help me? i am a 72 year old widow and hate being forced to drive a car with safety concerns and since i only drive about 50 miles per year, i don't want to be involved in a crash but that remains a possibility since no one seems able to help me. thank you and i hope to hear from someone soon. *tr

About a year ago i was backing out of a driveway and my front left coil spring snapped in half and destroyed the tire. i had to get it towed and repaired at a shop. with cost of new tire it was nearly 400 dollars. just a few days ago now i had my car parked in the garage and went to move some boxes and noticed a piece of coil laying under my car by the back right tire. this coil has snapped as well while just sitting in the garage. i was lucky to notice it this time before i drove off. this can be extremely dangerous at high speeds. there is no reason the coil springs should be randomly breaking like this. *tr

I have recently purchased a 99 oldsmobile alero. there is a problem with the turn signals/hazard button which started out with a loud buzzing while the turn signals were activated. i could sometimes get the buzzing to stop by pushing the hazard button at the same time as the turn signal. now it's at the point where my signals don't even work 95% of the time. i'll start my car and the first time i use them they might work, but as soon as i turn the wheel they stop working and do not work for the rest of the trip. the hazards have stopped working as well. i have been told that my vin number is not covered. online research has pulled up nhtsa action number : rq04005 which states that gm will issue a special policy for 1999-2000 alero since it's not covered under recall 03v327. however, further searches have found that rq04005 expired in february 2010. the defect acknowledged in recall 03v327 is exactly the same as the issue acknowledged in nhtsa action# rq04005, so why is there an allowed expiration date for the remedy of the problem? *js

I am ashamed to say i own a 1999 oldsmobile alero. i bought it last years as a back-up car, so we would have transportation should one of our newer vehicle have problems. i gave $2000 for it and have spent just as much on repairs. the turn signals only work intermittently though every fuse in it has been replaced. the anti-lock break light on the dash stays on. the front passenger strut broke and blew out the tire in the process. i was fortunate i wasn't killed when this happened. and now the heater blower has started making an awful noise, so it will likely need to be replaced soon. in addition the change oil light stays on, i have had it to numerous shops and no one can determine why it won't reset. the warning lights on the dash from all of this are a considerable distraction as well as all the problems they point to. i am appalled that in the usa we put a stamp of approval on such a horrible vehicle. in my opinion the entire vehicle should be recalled and replaced with one that runs properly. it is absurd and dangerous. i am fortunate i was not going a high speed when either strut broke...oh nearly forgot to mention that the rear driver-side strut also broke just this week. my biggest question is, who's name do i give to my lawyer when i am forced to drive this vehicle and someone is hurt? it is likely, given the hazards that come with this car that eventually something bad will happen. i just pray i won't have to drive it much. *tr

Power windows have both went out had to replace the motor for that, 2 times now the rack and pinion has came out and 2 times i have had to replace altenator had to replace overflow resorvoir i dont find this to be a reliable or safe car to be in. i bought it used so who knows what has happened before i got it i forgot to mention my part-time signal lights they work when they want to and i had to replace air conditioning compresser i have only had car 5 yrs myself and its so not worth the money i have put into it the dates vary but the first was in 2004 and the last was 2009. *tr

My 1999 oldsmobile alero has had a major problem with 1.manifold gaskets leaking. 2. all of the windows failing by falling off the tracks or the regulator itself failing. three times for the drivers side window! 3.the turn signals have stopped working correctly, clicking constantly. 4.the gas gauge stopped working 5. the interior leather curled up on the dash, which i notice on many other alero's i've seen. *tr

Gas gauge is always off, i have to fill the gas tank up atleast 2-3 a day. maybe there is a leak from recall, or the recall form the gas tank. also spent $700.00 for a recalled intake manifold gasket. *tr

Both the driver and the passenger windows fell off the tracks, so i had a friend pry them up and he got the windows to stay up, but you could not use either window. i did not have the money to get the windows fixed for a while until i was finally able to afford to get the driver's window fixed in may 2008 which cost $385.00. they replaced the regulator. on 12/4/2008, it happened yet again to the driver's side window and the warranty was only good for 60 days labor/30days parts, so i am yet again not able to use either window. i was told by quite a few people that this is a very common problem and that if i got it fixed yet again, it would probably happen yet again. i did not see this defect listed on the recall list however. *tr

Both left and right turn signals fail to operate intermittently. i can get them to start working again sometimes by activating the hazard lights and then trying the turn signals again, but sometimes the hazard lights also fail to function. it sounds like a spring is releasing sometimes when turning the steering wheel and then the turn signals fail afterward. the hazard switch became stuck and was replaced by the olds dealer back in 2001 or 2002. after that i could hear a mechanical noise in the steering column whenever i turned the wheel in either direction and when i complained to the dealer they said a spring had come loose and there was no safety issue and that it would cost $250 to repair, so i let it go and never repaired. *tr

Car began to overheat two days ago. intake manifold gasket replaced a year ago. dealership stated the intake manifold needs to be replaced again. we also found out that we may have a blown head gasket and possibly a cracked engine--which means a new motor. car has 80,000 miles on it and has been very well taken care of. we are devastated as this is our daughter's car and she is about to be a freshman in college. the car broke down on her while traveling down an interstate-at night. *tr

I own a 1999 alero coupe 3.4l v6, had to replace the window regulator on the drivers side. the window would come off trac and fall down into the door. i was able to grab the window the few times it happened and pull it back into place. the last time it happened i was at the bank drive-up, it was raining and the window fell all the way down in this time and i couldn't grab it. don't have a garage so i had to take the door off to get the window in the pouring rain and it was a sunday. took it to the mechanics on monday and had it fixed. the window regulator came completely off. *tr

I put the key in the ignition and the car does not start followed by the word security flashing on the dashboard car will not start. i have to wait about 15 mins and hope it won't do it again. i have read up online and seems this is a common occurrence related to the passlock system on oldsmobile cars. *tr

Left front, left rear, and right rear window regulators failed with in the past 3 years. all three failed the same way: while rolling up the window it falls down and stays down. the parts that failed are the small plastic clips that attach the regulator to the window. the whole regulator assembly on each window needed replacement at $80.00 + all over a piece of plastic that probably costs gm $ .30 each. *tr

In march 2006 at 73,277 miles i had to have the intake manifold gaskets, valve cover gaskets & water pump assembly replaced due to a constant antifreeze leak. then in april 2007 at 87,452 miles had to have the head gasket replaced due to the same problem. was told by the mechanic this was a common problem & gm even changed the intake manifold so the one i had put on in 2007 was different than the one in 2006 because they have had so many problems. seemed like they should be reimbursing people & having a recall because they obviously knew about the problem. *ak

Pulling out of my parking space at work on 5/4/07 and heard a loud pop, stopped vehicle and checked but could not find anything wrong. proceeded to drive home (about 1/2 mile) and smoke was coming from right front tire area. pulled up to my home and there was a sound like a gun shot and my right front tire went flat. triple "a" tow truck found that my right front strut spring had broken in a weak spot and obliterated my tire. car was towed to buckeye collision and i am waiting on a estimate of damage/repair cost. i don't know if buckeye collision is a certified repair place for gm but i would like gm to pay for this and make it right. i now worry about the left strut and cannot afford this kind of major repair. please post this message and contact gm and any other reporting agencies. this could lead to a death of an innocent person if driving fast on highway. *tr

I have had an 99' oldsmobile alero for 7 years. it has had almost every problem listed on this website. it has had an over heating problem every year since i got it and i have spent thousands in repairs for the cooling system, fuel pump, poor interior manufacturer, ac/heater blower motor settings failure, fuel gauge failure, transmission leakage, poor springs/struts, gear slipping, hard starting, water leaking in from rain under glove compartment, off alignment (set three times in year), poor gas mileage, overheating or running above normal temperature and sudden overheating without notice of gauge lights or sounds. has had front right caliper failure locking brake pads down against rotor causing burnout of pads,rotor warping, caliper cylinder damage. has had power steering pump leakage. this car is a lemon and gm should not be allowed to get away with selling unsafe, worthless vehicles. the only reason i still have mine running is because i have put a lot of personal as well as paid labor into its upkeep over the years due to that i cant afford another car. *jb

1999 olds alero 70,000 miles and will have to spend over 700 replacing the intake manifold gasket. if we do not repair, will lose engine at over 2500 expense. we have talked to shops and read internet issues predominant on this same issue. gm should do a recall on this vehicle due to so many complaints on this issue. *jb

Both of my power windows are no longer working. at first the driver side window started working slowly. it would sometimes get stuck and i would have to push it up. i stopped using that window because it was too much of a worry. then one day i put down the passenger window with no problem and when i went to put it up it fell into the door. i took the car to a window repair shop and had the guy put the window up but was unable to pay to have it fixed since it costs a lot. now both of my windows are not functioning. *nm

The turn signals and hazards lights work periodically. it appears to be something faulty in the connection between the two. if you hit the dash hard enough they will begin working but it is very dangerous b/c you do not know when they will work or when they will not work. *jb

(i've been told by both my mechanic and the dealer that this effects all 3.0l series engines in gm vehicles from the years 1998 - 2003.) i only realized my problem after my friend (with the exact same model car and year) had his head gasket blown off due to the engine coolant mixing with the oil. total estimated cost: $750. risk of accident if car's engine blows in traffic. *jb

In the last six months three out of 4 windows on my vehicle are now held up with duct tape so that they don't fall into the channel and i can't get them up. luckily, only one of them managed to do that and a friend managed to get it back up for me. that occurred at the end of january 2006. i could understand one- maybe- but three!!! no. this is definitely a safety issue. i suspect the only reason that my one working window, the back passenger side, is still working is because i haven't tried to put it down- or the result would be the same. i am sure that is going to be expensive to repair, so i guess i'll go with the duct tape for a while. i have also had a problem with the intake manifold, the gaskets on that were replaced in january, 2006. i was losing antifreeze from the overflow tank, and having to fill it every day. took it to the dealer, and they found the water pump leaking and the intake gaskets leaking. they were replaced at my expense. and... the intermittent turn signal is also a problem. that has been going on for about a year now. it should be recalled for that, like you did for the 2000- 2001 vehicles. the vehicle has 70,000 miles on it. the interior trim on this vehicle is shoddy, and that is being kind. the car was purchased brand new with 23 miles on it when we got it to our house in june, 1999. in less than a year a door panel had to be replaced because it had come apart. the dashboard has been peeling for about 11/2 years because they used cheap glue to hold the covering on the plastic. i realize that you consider that cosmetic, but it shouldn't be happening: i check every alero i see in a parking lot and there are a lot with peeling dashboards. gm should be responsible for fixing that- they caused the problem. gm caused multiple problems on this vehicle by doing it on the cheap. it is very costly to the people who own them, and it shouldn't be. i don't mind paying for routine repairs, i expect that, but these problems are not "routine".*nm

The back seat belts seem to be malfunctioning. the car seat wiggles from side to side when i make turns. the car seat didn't do this with my old car, i've had 2 different car seats in it. both back seats have the same problem. *jb

Driver's side window motor has been replaced three times in the last 4 years. rear driver's side window motor has also been replaced in the last year. amazing how this keeps happening over and over again. also, my horn has gone off in the middle of the night several times without anything setting it off. there is no way to turn it off once it goes. each time it was 3 or 4 in the morning and each time i had to drive to a remote location just to disconnect the horn. of course, the first couple of times i had no idea how to do this but after a while you get to know these things. i have had the horn replaced on several occasions without any success. now i am being told that it is the horn pads located in the steering wheel. of course, that is another $800 - $1000 job on top of the 4 windows that cost about $400 each and the horns with ran me about $150 to $200 each. *jb

Locked up ignition switch cruise control fell apart gear shift shifter not secure and slides up the shift.. both oxygen sensors failed all four windows electric motors, and racks have been replaced front end vibration when stopped or parked on incline dash board leather cover came loose and rolled up like a used rug original fuel filter have to be pried out of line and then pieces left had to be removed with needle nose pliers. fuel gauge as never worked. now its running about 4 miles and then quits, sets for 30 minutes and drive another 4 miles then quits. code reader says engine running lean, (problem is 4 to 5 sensors including the injectors could be causing this, no way to tell with replacing them until it runs. the expense of this could be 1000 to 3000 dollars. electric door locks failed , replace switch, only works part of the time. *jb

The failure is general motors passlock theft deterent system. my car does not start on numerous occations because of this problem that should be recalled. my car has been in a general motors repair shop five times with this problem and it still occurs. it has left me stranded, late for school, late for work, among other things because it will not start for 10 minutes until it resets. it is a safety issue and is embarrrassing when you cant move your car for 10 minutes after refueling at a gas station causing other people to get angry. *nm

1999 olds alero gls, bought the car in may,2004 with 23,000 miles on it. from day 1 i have had nothing but problems with it mostly brakes, car has extended warranty on it. the rotors grind, pulsate, squeak, the calipers make cracking noises sometimes brake pedal goes to floor. the dealership refuses to fix the problem or says it will not do it for the mechanic, when i drop it off i allowed the service manager to hear it he also verified the sound, only to get the car back being told it won't do it. the rotors have been replaced 4x the brakes 3x the calipers 2x, i still have the problem. cd player will not work told by dealership it is the humidity doing it which i live in philadelphia and it is winter there is no humidity. told dealership about a squeezing noise under hood got car back and told they could not find anything wrong with it, i get home and pop the hood and find a grease like residue on the serpentine belt, i later find the water pump leaking. car loses power and a metal banging noise occurs from under the hood under acceleration, dealership says cannot find the problem. i go back to the dealership and tell them about the brakes and water pump, the tell me that they cannot satisfy me and they will not service the car and not to bring it to them any more. in one month i was at the dealership for the same problem, it still is not fixed, with each time having to pay a $100.00 deductible. i contact gm the say car is to old and there is nothing they can do for me. the car has 56,000 miles on it and the warranty does not expire until 60,000 or may,2006. i am getting ready to trade it in for a toyota. *nm

Have had the heater resister replaced twice and the blower motor once. when going to a professional mechanic to have a third resister installed (less than a month after the second and 13 months after the first replacement), he said that water was leaking down through the windshield into the blower motor, melted a 30 amp fuse and shorted out the resistor. the mechanic said this could have caused a fire under the dashboard of the car. the blower motor encasement was drenched with water. *nm

While driving my 1999 oldsmobile alero 2.4l, my traction control light came on. it did not give the normal warning indicator to let me know that something was wrong. i stopped at a stop sign. with the oncoming traffic it requires you to quickly enter the intersection. my car stalled in the middle of take of as if it was not getting gas. the oncoming traffic which is traveling at a great rate of speed had to slam on breaks to prevent from hitting my stalled car. several cars came to a screeching halt and nearly wrecked. i learned that the cause of the car stalling was my throttle position sensor was faulty. this is the second time i have had to replace the tps. the first was done approximately 2 years ago the hendrick dealership in apex north carolina. i experienced the same problem with the traction control light coming and the transmission shift irregular and the car stalling. on the last experience today 28 feb 06 i had my 7 year old son in the back seat. i would like this issue address by the general motors corporation immediately. i narrowly escaped suffering severe injuries and possible lost of life today.*jb

Passlock system-car will not start 2-3 times a week have talk to people that had their key tumblers changed and still have the same problem . have to wait 10 -15 minutes for security light to go out before to car will crank. i didn't ask for the passlock system but have no way to override it. have found similar complaints on the web forums. *nm

Noticed my son's 1999 olds alero was using excessive antifreeze, took to shop & had to have defective intake gasket replaced as antifreeze was being sucked into the engine. repair shop reports that they are repairing same problem on 3 gm cars per week in this town of 25,000 people. cost $ 650 to repair; gm should recall this vehicle & similar models and replace these defective gaskets, we were lucky that we did not ruin the engine on this car. we had to get the car repaired immediately as my son did not have any other vehicle to drive to work while the alero was being repaired and really could not afford this expensive repair on this car. repair shop advised that gm is not recalling this part or paying for the repairs even though they are aware of the problem and that it is the fault of a defective gasket and not the car owners fault. *nm

I purchased the car & immediately had to have the brakes fixed by the dealership. in 3/05 had complete look at car -at chevy. dealership, they flushed radiator, clean fuel lines-things along those lines "to make my car run better". in june of 05 i started noticing a small puddle of water under my vehicle & it started overheating. was told my repair man that radiator cap needed replacing. that seemed to help a little. by october 05 the car was leaking antifreeze from under the car. didn't have the money to have it fixed so i didn't drive it because i was a stay at home mom. dec 05 i went to work and its been downhill. my car now will overheat if it idles for very long, leaks antifreeze (i have to add coolant every morning), and we was told that it was the probably the intake manifold gasket gone bad which will cost about 900.00. this is just 1 of the many problems we have experienced since the purchase. *jb

Dt: the contact stated the turn signals worked intermediately. the dealership replaced a computer component trying to repair the problem, however the problem recurred. the contact felt that the problem was the same as mentioned in nhtsa recall 03v327000/ investigation number rq04005. there was a special service campaign being done by the manufacturer. the dealership said this vehicle was not included. *ak updated 12/7/2005. *nm

Front left coil spring broke into two pieces. spring was not rusted. pieces were extremely sharp and could have punctured tire easily. could have been extremely dangerous at high speed. i replaced both springs but did not think to keep busted one. *jb

The driver's side window came off track and ended up in the bottom of the door. in the process, the clips which hold the glass on broke off, the glass broke, and the window regulator broke. this is not the first problem i have had with this window, but by far the most expensive to repair. *nm

Dt: on october 1, 2005, noticed the low tire pressure warning light came on. the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic shop, and they noticed that the left rear coil spring broke, but did not puncture the tire. the local mechanic recommended that the struts be replaced along with the coil springs. the consumer contacted the manufacturer and they said based on the low mileage, they were surprised that this happened to the vehicle. they tried to contact a local dealer, but since the consumer did not have a history with a local dealer they were able to assist her in the cost of the repair. *ak (11/09/05) *sc

Dt: 1999 oldsmobile alero. the contact stated the hub bearings on both sides of the front end went out. there was a noise coming from the front end, the contact took the vehicle to a garage. the mechanic told her of the problem, and said if she drove it much longer there would have been an accident. the head gaskets also blew out the engine. the vehicle was leaking antifreeze into the air system. the vehicle is currently at the garage being fixed for the head gaskets. also, fuel pump went out while driving on the road. the vehicle was towed to the garage. then, they replaced the fuel pump. the contact stated , in addition, there have been electrical problems. the computer system had to be reset a couple of times. this has happened within the past 12 months. *ak

Dt: the contact owns a 1999 oldsmobile alero. the contact states that she hit a pot hole and the air bag deployed. the air bag was possibly defective because it did not completely deploy, the air bag on the right side ejected and it bent open. it looked as if tissue was coming out of the vehicle, the driver side air bag did not completely deploy. this occurred 34 mph. the manufacturer was contacted, and they told her that there was nothing that they could do about vehicle and urged her to contact the insurance company. no injuries were reported. also, a bad odor come from the air bag. this cracked the steering wheel and the dash board. it occurred almost a year ago. the air bag warning light was not on prior to the deployment. *ak

Dt: 1999 oldsmobile alero - consumer's car was involved in an accident and the hub assembly that holds the rear passenger struts sheared off. while driving at 65 mph the rear wheel broke off and the car turned sideways and went off the highway. there was no impact, but the car did flip side ways. the accident caused the front suspension to break. the vehicle has not been looked at by a mechanic. the consumer contacted the manufacturer and was told there was no recall on this vehicle for this part. a police report was taken. there was one injury.*ak *jb

Noticed play and looseness in steering had it check out by mechanic and found it was my rack and pinion i am replacing it with another used part. *jb

Dt: while driving at low speed and applying brake pressure there were no brakes whatsoever. this resulted in an accident. the vehicle skidded, went over small embankment, and struck a tree where it came to a stop, vehicle was towed to the a wrecker service shop. has not been to a repair shop or dealership. also, there was no explanation as to why this occurred. in the past there was an issue where on parking on a incline a block had to be placed behind to wheels to keep itfrom rolling. *ak

My daughter will be driving her 99 alero along and at any given time the car stalls, the power steering and brakes don't work and she has a great deal of difficulty pulling over to get out of traffic. we have taken it to several mechanics, no one can find anything wrong. she is afraid to drive it. *nm

1 i was leaving work parking lot and heard a clunk noise and got out of my car to see if i had hit something and checked my tires and everything appeared alright so i proceeded to pull out again and heard a clunk and then pssssssssss. got out of my car again and my front passenger tire was deflated. 2 when pulling tire off to change it we couldn't get the tire off because the coil spring shot through the tire. finally got tire off and changed it. 3 took car to steve shannon tire and auto center and had it repaired. checked with gm dealership to see if there was a recall (before having shannon's fix it) but there was not. told them what happened and they said they never heard of it. parts replaced : 2 struts, coil spring set, 2 strut mounts, 1 tire. i do have the tire and coil spring. i reported this to gm and told them i would be filing a complaint with nhtsa. *jb

When it rains car either wont start, or guages will not work. radio stops working. brake lights go on and off. fuse box was corroded, replaced worked fine for about 2 months and no is acting up again. mechanics could find nothing else wrong. it was in the shop 4 times before they fixed the fuse box. dealership tried to fix something that wasnt the problem and charge $450 more than the cost.

I have a 99 oldmobile alero. i was driving it out of my driveway at a slow speed. near the end of my driveway i heard a loud crack. i manuvered my car into the street and there was a loud crunching dragging sound. i stopped my car and checked underneath and saw nothing. i moved my car back into the driveway and parked and checked under the hood and walked around again. i noticed my passenger side tire was flat to the ground. i took off the tire and noticed a large groove and split in the tire. upon further investigation i noticed the spring on the passenger side had broken and punctured my tire. i feel very fortunate that i was so close to home and traveling at slow speed when this happened. my car is now in the shop waiting for a cost estimate and service. it doesn't appear that there has been a recall on this part.

Left school went to the bank, came out smoke was coming from under hood by front passenger tire. i cracked the hood and smoke increased. i could smell something burning, i put the hood back down and asked the bank teller to call 911. fire department came and opened hood, alternator was burned out entirely and there had been no warning signs at any time. had to leave vehicle, will have to replace alternator, and pay for towing. advised by the fire department not to turn the ignition for any reason because the alternator will ignite, until replaced.

Dt: 1999 with 22,000 miles on the car. when the consumer went to push the hazard switch it sunk into the dashboard. and couldn't get the flasher to go off. consumer talked to the manufacturer, who was aware of the problem. something broke behind the switch, when the switched was pushed. consumer has already taken the car to the dealer and had repairs done.*ak

On 5/27/05, the front spring broke and punctured tire, causing a blow out. there was no warning on dash to indicate there was a problem. there was a clanking in the front end as the driver approached a stop sign, then tire was punctured. there were normal driving and weather conditions on the day of the incident. the vehicle had experienced front wheel bearing issues. the front passenger side tire was punctured as a result of the spring breakage. the driver noticed a worn pattern on the tire where the spring had been rubbing. the speed at the time of the failure was 5 mph. the vehicle was regularly serviced. upon the last inspection there where no reports of a defect in the vehicle. *ak the front coil spring surrounding the strut broke and the sharp steel edge from the brake gouged the tire wearing a groove in it and after a short time caused it to fail. the rubbing against the tire caused smoke. the consumer requested reimbursement. *sc *jb

Discovered during a vehicle inspection that oil was leaking around the upper part of the engine...near the head and intake manifold area. plus have been smelling burning oil through the ventilation system...occasionally. at the time, vehicle was no longer under manufacture warranty...contact manufacture for assistance, but assistance was denied.

Occasionally, vehicle will not start after sitting for about an hour...vehicle will try to start...tachometer will fluctuate, but the engine ends up stalling. in order to start the vehicle, the ignition key has to be held in the start position longer than usual...about 5 seconds. took to various dealer service dept. several times, but nothing wrong could be found by them. vehicle is now out of manufacture's warranty...contacted manufacture for assistance, but none given.

Bought the vehicle new in florida...from day one, the parking brake has never worked right...will not hold the vehicle on a hill when parking brake lever fully engaged. took the vehicle to dealer service centers several times...parking brake would work for a few weeks, but would return to previous state of not working...ineffective. finally fixed myself...problem was a defective brake adjuster screw.

I bought this vehicle new in florida...from day 1 there has been excessive wind noise coming from the driver side of the vehicle. it sounds like a window is left open. took to various service dealership to complain of this problem...various things have been done by the service dept., but the problem still persist. vehicle is now out of manufacture warranty...have contacted manufacture with this problem, but no help offered.

On the way from work one day after a rain shower, i use the power driver window to roll down the window for some fresh air. when i power rolled up the window, there were deep scratches on various places on the window. tsb#98831520 took to dealer service dept to repair under warranty. it was fixed but three days later it was scratched again in the same manner. took back to dealer service to repair...okay. later other three window had scratches due to use. all replaced, but now three of the four windows (passenger front and rear and driver rear) have scratches. there was a tsb issued for this problem, but the problem was never fixed. now the manufacture warranty has expired. contacted manufacture for assistance but no help offered.

I bought my vehicle new in 1998 in florida. less than 5 months later, the power driver seat becomes loose...moves with the movement of the car. took to dealer for repair under manufacture warranty. after service visit, driver seat is still loose. manufacture warranty is now expired on this vehicle...contacted the manufacture, but they offered no assistance for this problem.

I bought the car new at a florida dealership on 11/1998. less than two years later the material on the door panels was coming off...detaching...the vinyl lifted off the upper door panel. took the vehicle in for service to replace on 09/2002 under manufacture warranty. material on door panel is now coming off the door panel again. manufacture warranty has expired and refused any assistance in fixing this problem.

My car was sitting in the parking lot, as i was pulling out of the stall, i heard a bang. after looking at the car, i could see that the right front end was sitting on the tire. i had to have the car towed to a dealer, who told me that the right front coil spring had just broke. luckily, i was not driving at the time. it could have been potentially fatal had the spring broke while i was driving. i noticed that this same spring has broken on several allergy and 26 grand ams, based on other complaints filed. i have the part, if further investigation is needed. this sounds like a manufacturer's defect. gm could be exposed to strict product liability because this defect is unreasonably dangerous. i contacted gm, filed a complaint with them, and am waiting for them to call me back. i left 2 additional messages, and no one is returning my calls. i am also going to file a complaint with the pennsylvania attorney general's office.*ak

October of 2004 i was parked on school grounds waiting for my daughter to finish school.when i heard a big bang. i got out of the car ,and walked around it. i could find nothing. when i started to drive it there was a crunching coming from the front end. upon further inspection the front drivers side coil spring snapped. i replaced it thinking it was a freak accident. then this week april 10,2005 i was pulling into my driveway and again heard another bang. this time the passenger side front coil spring snapped. i can see one breaking as an accident , but when both go. there is something wrong. my last car was a 1993 ford taurus. they too had a front coil spring issue. ford recalled our car and replaced the spring at no charge.*ak

While driving to work on jan 17 i turned on the rear defroster. within a few minutes, two to three, i heard a popping sound. just one time, so i started looking around the interior of the car. i noticed a hole between the rear passenger window and the rear window. my alero was a 2 door. when i got when i could pull over there were flames coming from the hole. i was unable to put them out. i called 911. by time the fire trucks arrived the car was fully engulfed in flames and was beyond saving. the only thing left of it was the body and the engine. *nm

About 2 1/2 years ago i had to replace both front wheel bearing hubs. on 12/29/04 i had to have the right bearing hub replaced for the second time. i do not recall the mileage the first time. i had about 129,000 on this time.*ak

Engine coolant leak onto engine block and transmission housing. intake manifold gasket needed to be replaced. oldsmobile dealership stated that this was a common problem with the 3400 v6 engine. *jb

Without any warning or signs, the car engine died at approximately 65,000 mi. car was driven locally and was well taken care of. it cost $1,700.00 to replace (with an engine that had 43,000 miles.), and seems that the engine should have lasted for more than 65,000 miles.*ak

I have had 3 of the 4 regulator motors go out on my front driver's side, back drivers and passengers side. i have only had the front drivers side repaired as the dealer quoted me a price of $400 to fix each one. the front one broke while still under warranty, so that was fixed. each time this happened as the window was rolled down or up. there was a loud clunking noise and the window just fell down. this is especially annoying since i have 2 small kids and their windows won't stay up. there has got to be some sort of defect, since i've read a number of reports about this same thing, and since it's happened to 3 of my 4 windows. i have a feeling it's about to happen to the front passenger side too, as that window won't roll down. *jb

Fuel injectors failed, car started to rumble when idle and would sputter when foot on gas. *bf the fuel injector #6 was sticking and the same thing problem occurred. *sc

1999 oldsmobile alero (out of warranty) began to have problems with transmission "slipping" occasionally during the summer. i was told no problem could be found. while driving home last evening, the service engine soon light came on as well as the "trac off" light and it was very hard to get the car to go more than 30 mph on a 50 mph highway very nearly causing an accident. by the grace of god, that did not happen, but now i am told that the transmission may "possibly be bad" or it "could be several other things." in either case, it would seem to me that someone should have found the error before. additionally, the car has less than 65,000 miles on it and though it was sluggish from the time i bought it and would occasionally lurch forward when pulling away from a stop, it was not until the summer that it became a frequent as opposed to a rare occurrence. i truly believe that there is some flaw in the transmission. of note also is that the driver's side window only rolls down on occasion and sometimes will not go back up, the fan only works on the highest 2 settings and the entire wiper blade assembly (some sort of sensor) had to be replaced 1 month out of warranty. what a piece of junk. and, the air conditioner no longer cools the car and i was told i had a slow leak.*ak

A shortage continuously occurs within the fuse box, causing electrical components to malfunction. *ak

Purchased the car in february'03. bad vibration when driving at speeds over 45 mph, tires rotated and balanced 4+ times, both front wheel bearing/hub kits replaced in less than 6 months after purchase, still occurs and have just grown accustomed to the shaking. engine coolant leaks: replaced pump and "o" ring. power steering pump and return hose replaced. driver side window does not roll back up(believe dealership replaced prio to purchase). driver side mirror motor has never worked properly, dealer(in rochester) put on receipt of last repair that they replaced motor, but didn't actually have part, but was on order. never received a phone call back when or if part came in(dealership is over 300 miles from my home, purchased car on the internet).*jb

The front seat belts malfunctioned because of a failure in the seat belt retractor. the drivers seat belt was reeled all the way out and wouldn't retract back into it's holster and the passenger seat belt intermittently retracted. *jb

I have a 1999 oldsmobile alero and there is a problem with the blinkers and hazard lights. both do not always work and i have had them checked out by my dealer. they were not able to fix the problem before my warranty ran out, and there is clearly a problem that was not caused by me, but must be some kind of malfunction. *ak

The hazard light switch works intermittantly on my 1999 oldsmobile alero. after looking into saw that there was a recall on many 2000 aleros for the same problem. when it stops i can normally get it to work for a few minutes longer by pushing the top of the switch down or wiggling it. the dealer wanted to charge me over $100 to replace it. i refused and purchased the switch myself for $30. seems very odd that gm would recall many cars with the same switch and same problem but not others. wanted to bring to your attention that this swtich is a problem in earlier models of the alero as well. *ak

While driving 35 mph both frontal air bags inadvertently deployed. vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic could not duplicate the problem. *ak

Both windows on my car have fallen into the door. before falling into the door there was a grinding noise and the a loud pop. *nm

Check engine light came on and security light started to blink when we got back from a trip. we took it in and the diagnostic check revealed that the knock sensor was bad. so that was replaced. (code 00327). *ak but now the light still keeps coming on for the same code even though it's already been fixed.

The power window motor has burned out twice. there was an accident. the vehicle was in park automatically put itself in reverse, rolled back hitting another vehicle. also, the ignition switch. upon putting the key into the ignition the consumer has to spray it with 40/40 wd before the vehicle will start. please provide any further information.

My 1999 oldsmobile alero two door has been having problems with the emergency flashers and turn indicators. often times when the lever is engaged the blinkers will make a click sound as they do when they are working and fail to continue blinking. the solution i have found is to push the emergency flasher button on the dashboard. this is sometimes effective in getting the blinkers to begin working again. however, when it doesn't solve the problem, i am unable to properly signal for turns. this has on several occasions caused problems for me at stop signs and uncontrolled intersections. in addition, the wiring (not sure if it's related) for the windows has caused my windows to not work. i'm sure you can understand that if i am unable to roll down my windows, and my blinkers don't work, then there is virtually no way to signal my turns and lane changes properly. the blinkers fuse has never blown. the emergency flashers and blinkers are obviously related from the sound and fact that they seem to cause the other to fail or begin to work. i have done a small amount of research and found there was a recall for the 2000 year of my car. obviously, that doesn't help my situation. please contact me so we can find a solution that is less costly than the collision that is imminent from these failures.*ak

While driving at 50 mph consumer heard a noise coming from the front end. stopped the vehicle an saw the right tire flat. a mechanic indicated to the consumer that coil spring broke and punctured the tire. dealer had been not notified.*ak

Problems with 1999 oldsmobile alero transmission.*mr recently the consumer's car began to make a very loud noise from the transmission. the vehicle was checked by the dealer who determined that a pin broke in the overdrive gearshift and sent parts into the planetary gear. *nm

I was pulling out of my driveway and my coil (spring) snapped off and broke. it sliced my tire and i had to replace my tire as well as the coil (spring). it was the drivers side front wheel. i am nervous that the other one may snap and i don't know what would have happened if i was driving my car at the time that coil snapped. i am aware that this part was recalled on the ford taurus.*ak

Dear sirs, contacting you to make you aware of a problem with a certain model of car. the problem is that the vinyl dash of this car will peel back and over the passenger side airbag. i contacted the dealership and was only given an estimate of how much it would cost to repair the damage. i then asked the dealership why was this not a safety concern due the fact that the airbag was obviously damaged. this type of damage could make the airbag deploy for no reason a injure the passenger or even worse, not deploy upon a frontal collision. again i was not given an answer on why this was not a concern. i thought about this and was concerned that what if the airbag deployed when not needed and there was a child in the seat. even if the child was old enough to be in the front and was in there seat belt, i do not believe that the driver could not anything to stop any injury to the child.*ak

Intermittently turn signal/hazard lights, and high beam light failed to function. on some occasions there was a slight pop before the warning lights failed. dealership indicated that the hazard switch had to be replaced. *ak

I was driving my car less than one mile from my home. i made a left turn at a light, and upon completion of the turn, i heard a loud bang and my right front passenger tire was on it's rim. thinking that i hit something, i immediately pulled over. the road was clear. when i jacked up my car and attempted to remove the tire to put on the spare, i realized that the front suspension spring had broken and the jagged edge of the spring had pierced my tire. since i was driving at the time, in seconds it sheared my tire all the way around, causing steering to be difficult. i reported the problem to general motors, but they refused to offer assistance or towing fees. unfortunately i was stuck paying for the repairs at a dealership and a tow that was due to a mechanical failure causing a near-accident. *la

Airbags deployed while driving 35-45 mph down road. gm pulled data from computer and has now said that the car must have hit something to deploy the air bags, pothole, bush, stick or something. they however won't help in the matter because something caused the air bag to deploy, well i could have told them that because nothing happens without a reason. no repairs have been made to the vehicle yet i am still trying to get this resolved. *la

Turn signals worked intermittently. vehicle was taken to the dealer, and consumer was told that there was a recall. however, this vehicle was not included in the recall due to vin. *ak

1999 alero having problems with manifold leaking oil and failed fuel injectors. *mr the front spring had broken suddenly as the vehicle was in motion. the manifold and injector problem occurred within one week. recall #3v473000 and there was a recall for the suspension. *sc *jb

When applying the brakes vehicle continued to accelerate. no impact reported. *ak

My car's coolant light came on the first time about 2 weeks ago. at that time i replaced the coolant that was missing, only to have the light come on again 2 days later. i again replaced the coolant. i could not find any visible leaks under the car. i was driving to the mechanic when my check engine light came on, and the check coolant light came on. the cars tempature gauge was topped out. i had to pull over to the side of a major freeway and call for help. after 2 hours of waiting for a tow truck. the mechanic tells me that the upper and lower intake manifold gaskets need replaced. also, the coolant had leaked into my engine and mixed with the oil causing the engine to miss. i had to have the gaskets replaced with a new version. and also have the engine flushed, an oil change and a coolant flush as well as a coolant change. all of this costing well over $700. apparently, gm has issued a service bulletin related to this issue but has failed to issue a recall on that particular part. my safety should be of some concern to this car manufactuer to say the least! *ak

Consumer took the vehicle to the dealership for a sudden acceleration issue. vehicle was accelerating without the accelerator pedal being depressed. while having this issue checked dealership noticed that the head gasket failed and leaked radiator anti freeze into the engine. the cause of the sudden acceleration was due to a bad chip in the mother board. the cause of the radiator anti freeze leak was undetermined.*ak *nm

A leak in the intake manifold that is allowing coolant and oil to leak into the engine. it costs between $600 - $800 to repair and this is a faulty part in a majority of the gm vehicles. there was a service bulletin dated march 2003 that entails the exact details of the problem, yet gm has not offered its customers any remedies to the problem such as paying for the repair. i have maintained this vehicle with all required service work. i want gm to pay for the repair.*ak

The turning on the turn signal would come on and go off intermittently on its own. the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer and the mechanic determined that turn signal switch unit needed to be replaced due to a burnt wire. *ak the consumer stated there a recall was issued for gm vehicles with the exact problem. *jb

I was not given any warning to the events that lead up to the problem with my car. upon returning home at 11 p.m. may15, 2004 from my parents home, i turned into my driveway, the car immediately started filling with smoke and i smelled rubber burning. i immediately stopped the car and turned off the engine. i checked the car over inside and out and found nothing amiss, only the smell. i retreated to the confines of my home and after a period of 10 minutes, i heard what appeared to be a gun shot noise then a hissing sound. i stepped outside and noticed the hissing sound was coming from my cars right front tire, which had gone flat. deciding i would check the situation the next morning then returned to the house. the next morning, i looked to find in fact the right front tire was flat. my fiance tried to place a scissor jack under the front of the car to jack it up and replace the tire, but was unable to do so. we placed the jack under the rear tire and jacked that up until there was sufficient room to place another jack under the front tire. when the car was jacked high enough to look at the tire, we noticed the coil spring had scheared in half causing the jagged edge of the spring to gough into the front tire causing it to go flat. there is an indication that the manufactures weld on the spring was poorly done as apparent by a rust spot at the breaking point. i also believe the strut inside the coil spring is damaged also. *ak

Emergency flasher switch malfunctioned on three occasions. the switches failed every 30,000 miles. when the emergency flashers failed the turn signals also became ineffective. *ak

While driving 60 to 70 mph rear passenger side wheel separated from the vehicle. vehicle was taken to the dealer, and technician determined that rear axle broke. *ak

The consumer had the vehicle in the park position and vehicle jumped into reverse. this caused the vehicle to spin around in a 360 motion. the passenger jumped out of the vehicle while the vehicle was in motion. the vehicle came to a dead stop when it hit a ditch head on. *ak *sc

Leaking fuel from/around fuel regulator spraying on engine

Within my 36,000 of driving from 50,222 to 86,119 my intake gaskets have been replaced twice. my rack has been replaced twice and will need to be replaced a third time. i am also aware that the rack was replaced while the previous owner had the car. recently i realized why water was getting into my passenger side of the vehicle. the window seal is shifted causing the window to leak if the car is parked at certain inclines. this repair is not covered by my pre-owned vehicle warranty. all major repairs have been covered by my warranty and any additional costs have bee quote "eaten" by repair facilities.

Leaking coolant, uses dex-cool.

1. persistant scraping noise from ft end since 10/21/01. cavendar mechanics evaluted problem 4-6 separate times w/ different prognosis each time, later determined transmission problems on 3/18/02. currently still having same scraping noise and fluid(redish) leakage from underneath vehicle 2. 3 window motors failed /repaired 3. twice alternator failure/repaired w/2 seperate alts

Engine: 3.4l v6. the manifold gasket and water pump failed at approximately 40,000 miles. the dealer picked up the cost of the parts under their "goodwill" policy, but out of pocket cost to me was still over $800. the manifold gasket on my 2002 buick rendezvous, vin [xxx] also failed and had to be replaced at 18,000 miles. this was done under warranty at no cost to me. this was also the 3.4l v6 engine. it is obvious this is a problem gm has known about for quite some time and have not taken corrective action in a timely manner. an extension of the warranty on this engine is certainly called for. i have advised many friends to avoid purchasing a gm car with either the 3.1l or 3.4l engine. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Wheel bearing wore out at 52000 miles. battery terminal post broke off. brake caliper melted at 51000 miles. two power steering lines burst at 59000. the cost of the repair for the power steering problem is an estimate i got from a mechanic, but i have not yet repaired. i'm hoping for a recall before i take any action. my complaints are based on the fact that there's no good reason for any of those things to need repair that serious. aren't wheel bearings and power steering lines supposed to last for a while?

2 driver side window motors have been replaced, dash pulled to correct corr electrical problems, no dash light, no high beam light, all withing first 6 months, 1-03 water pump replaced, and transmission slipping. only 21000. miles on the car..

All 4 windows in my1999 alero are defective. 2 passenger windows are etching the glass everytime they go up and down. driver window inside mechanism exploded and shattered the gears inside. window fortunately is still on track but not functioning. back window has to be taped up because it will not stay up and will fall into door. i usually am the only person in the car. have never had windows malfunction like this. help. *ak

Lower intake gasket failure causes near collision on freeway. while i was driving home on a busy day my coolant light came on and my engine started pulsing strangely. trying to pull into the emergency lane caused several cars to nearly slam into the back of my car. the problem with the coolant was found to be a common flaw in the lower intake gasket on 3.4l (3400) gm engines. after investigation, i've found that many people are experiencing this problem yet gm is doing nothing to address it.*ak

This car has many problems but the worst of them is the problem with the front drivers side spring that broke in half while the car was moving. i was able to control the car before hitting any other drivers. the car doesn't even have 70k on it and the spring should last much longer than that. the struts are also shot and the mounting plates also need to be replaced. the car also vibrates and pulss to the left if you have to apply the brakes while driving over 50mph. sometimes the power windows also quit working for no reason. also when you first take off in the car in the morning there is a loud gringing noise coming from the front brakes. i had the brakes checked several times and nobody can find anything wrong with them. since having this car i have had a lot of problems with it. the car is only 4 1/2 years old. i remember when a car would last you a good 15 years if your took care of it. what happen to quality. no wonder the japanesse are doing so well!

I bought my alero in may of 2003, and it is not march 2004 and i am replacing the motor. started out with brake problems, then went on to the leather under the windows and on the dash "bubbling" up in the sun. next, i had coolant/oil leaks at the intake manifold. low trac light came on all the time, low tire pressure light stays on, the fan for the a/c or heat only worked in the 3-5 positions. (it's full blast or nothing.) coolant light frequently came on, transmission fluid vanishes, coolant leaks, yet no one knows where from. the temperature gauge never goes below halfway, and it ran hot a lot. had to replace the coolant cap and overflow resevoir. the gas hand sticks, the speedometer sticks, the leather seats are tearing, had to replace the factory radio because it would not pick up any channels, rear defrost works only when it wants to, and service engine light stayed on about half the time. i took this car to 7 mechanics, had it hooked up to diagnostic computers, had everything checked-yet no one could tell me what was going on. finally, i left the mechanic shop after being told that the car was "good to go" (which i would never put in the same sentence with alero again.), and it starting skipping. i had it towed, only to find out that i had a cracked block and cracked heads. (new motor needed-final prognosis) my mechanic told me that it would do absolutely no good to put a motor in it because in 2 years-the new motor will do the same! oldsmobile should be ashamed that they would recall a glove box latch, yet not the motor. after reading the reviews that i have read in the past week, i am seeking legal action in regards to this issue. i did not pay $17,000 for a lemon, which is all i got!! don't buy!! buyer beware!! *ak

At 50k miles, low coolant light would flicker on and off so per the manual dexcool/water mixture was added. this alleviated the problem only temporarily however. light continued to come on, and later at 61k, oil leak was noticed on the side of the intake manifold. an appointment was made to bring the car to the dealership the same week, during which the security dummy light came on (for no apparent reason). also during this week, the "change oil" dummy light came on 100 miles before the oil change was due (at 2900 miles). the car was brought to the dealership to fix per its appointment, and not only was coolant leaking into the engine, but the upper and lower intake manifold gaskets required replacement. in addition, on its way to the dealership, the engine started to misfire causing the "check engine" light to flash for several moments before turning to a steadily lit dummy light. car has always been given routine maintenance and oil changes every 3k or as necessary, so this performance and obvious design flaw are very disappointing. would not recommend this car/3.4l v6 engine to anyone looking to purchase a new vehicle and considering this make/model/engine type. *jb

I own a 1999 olds alero. the rear window defroster stopped working. i checked and found that the plug going into the rear defogger/radio module was melted. i believe this could have caused a fire. i checked with my local dealer and they were not aware of any problems with this vehicle. i asked if they had a replacement part so that i could repair this and they said none were available. i went to my local scrap yard and was able to get a replacement end from a wrecked alero. this was only after finding melted plugs in two other ones they had. a recall should be issued immediately due the danger of a fire with this vehicle. *jb - 3/17/04- consumer called with the correct vin#. complaint has been updated. *rp *sc *jb

Turn signals do not always flash or continue to flash when activated! i brought this to the attention of the oldsmobile dealer during the first year (1999) that i had the vehicle. the dealer supposedly fixed the problem. however, during the past year, the problem has resurfaced. the flasher is sealed under the dash and is not easily accessible as in most vehicles where the turn signal flasher unit can be replaced off the shelf at any local auto parts store. today, i was entering a freeway when the flashers stopped flashing. they continued to flash when i pushed and released the hazard signal button. this problem causes a safety hazard because the turn signals are not reliable and not easily accessible without removing part of the dashboard.*ak

The check engine light came on. upon checking the coolant levels, it was low. the repair shop diagnosis is a leak in the intake manifold with an $800+ repair cost. according to research, the particular type of coolant, dexcool, used in gm cars is linked to corrosion to the intake manifold gaskets. *ak

Olds alero 1999 transmission shifter can go to nuetral from drive without pushing shifter button.the shifter should have a lock in drive so you can not bump it out of gear while driving.the trans. is an automatic florr mounted shifter.*ak

The oldsmobile alero is a pile of crap. since i have had it i have replaced almost everything in the front end. my catalytic converter went out at 70,000 miles, i had a warranty and they didn't fix it. my anti-lock brakes and traction control went out and my cruise control switch hasn't worked since about 60,000 miles. i'm just waiting for the day this car just bursts into flames. *cb

Defective design/location of hood latch mechanism caused total failure of hood latch and release of hood (raising hood into the air and tearing it off the hinges) during a low speed front end impact into a standard interstate highway metal guard rail. the design of the "nose" trim of the car is such that when the "nose" trim is pressed down and back by a low speed direct impact into a standard highway guard rail, the plastic "nose" trim pushes the hood latch release lever down and back, which in turn releases the hood--instead of securing it. the low speed impact, which damaged only one headlight assembly and did not even break the grill, released the hood, sending it aloft, blinding the driver's line of sight, and resulting in the wind tearing off the hood and unleashing it as a potential missile on the highway. proper design (of the trim in relation to the latch) should force the hood to lock down during an impact, instead of releasing it. improper design of the hood hinges also probably contributed to the hood tearing away instead of being retained/trapped during the accident. i must emphasize that the vehicle was not structurally damaged, the bumper was not damaged, the grill was not damaged--but the nose trim still was able to release the hood latch with minimal force required. *la

I'm experiencing the same problem that is described in nhtsa campaign # 03v327000. specifically, my vehicle's hazard-light switches malfunction when there is a temperature change in the vehicle causing my turn signals to work intermittently or not at all. i contacted oldsmobile customer service and was told that because i have a 1999 alero, that model year was not included and therefore, they would offer no assistance with the repair. this problem frequently puts me in hazardous situations due to turn signals not working at times.*ak

Replaced the front drivers side wheel bearing in june of 2002. wheel bearing is going out again and needs to be replaced after only 30,000 miles. my brother-in-law had an oldsmobile intrigue that he also had to replace the front drivers wheel bearing on twice before getting rid of the car. *la

The "coolant" light came on - then the car died & overheated...apparently coolant was leaking into the engine because a gasket failed...now the engine must be replaced at 70,000 miles. starting at 3,000 miles, the check engine soon light came on & it has been in and out of dealerships ever since!!! gm hasn't done a thing to help me! i just spent $1,300 to get the gasket replaced in the intake manifold & now they tell me the engine needs to be replaced!!! please help me - i need a contact for gm - the customer service line has not done a thing to help & apparently this is a common problem... *la

This is happening in the 1999 alero as well as the 2000-2001 make: oldsmobile model: alero year: 2000 recall number: 03v327000 summary: certain passenger vehicles have hazard warning switches that may experience solder joint cracking caused by rapid temperature transitions and the soldering process. if solder joint cracking occurs and results in an open circuit, the turn signals/hazard lamps become intermittent or inoperative. consequence: when the turn signals are inoperative, the driver cannot use them to signal intent to turn that could result in a crash. remedy: dealers will replace the hazard warning switch. owner notification is expected to begin during the second quarter of 2004. owners should contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, pontiac at 1-800-620-7668, or oldsmobile at 1-800-630-6537. *jb

The dashboard material has come unglued and shrunk. the dealer said it cost $900 to fix. i contacted gm to tell them about the problem and they told me they could nothing about it. i have since seen 5 other alero's with the same problem. i am writing another complaint letter to gm after seeing other similar reports on this website. *jb

Glass in passenger window fell in channel. i was able to bring it back up but it keeps falling in again. there are numerous service bulletins, complaints and defect investigations on this same problem. here are the defect investigation numbers: 754557,10016869,10032972,10039036,752099,563702,10011989. service bulletins: 010864018b, 010857007a,010864012b,010864018a,010864018. this should not be happening on these cars - who knows how many we haven't heard about. i don't think we should have to pay for this kind of defect. *la

I own a 1999 oldsmobile alero with a v-6 3.4 liter engine, and it uses dex-cool. over the past few months my low coolant light has been coming on and as instructed in my owner's manual i have been replacing the dex-cool/water mixture in the overflow tank. just recently my abs light and low track light has come on, and over the weekend i was driving on a highway when my fan belt prematurely broke and stranded me along side of the highway. *jb

Bad vibration at highway speeds.had wheels aligned,tires balanced, tie rods ,both front axles, both front bearings, front disc brakes(rotors and pads), both front struts replaced. vibration at times gets bad enough to lose control. none of the above solutions fixed the problem.*ak

The mechanism that raises and lowers the side windows on my 1999 alero gls coupe failed about one year ago -- in both windows. they were repaired after failing, and even the repaired mechanism failed. the window can not be raised from its current lowered position.*ak

Turn signals fail without warning. they either fail while the lever is activated or will not function on lever command. turn signals fail at various times and then properly function again with no consistency. various shops have no answer to problem, unless they completely fail.

While applying the brakes abs braking light appeared on the dashboard.*ak.

While placing car in reverse the engine began knocking and has not ran since. not happy at all still owe a lot of money and car doesn't run!! not worth the money. *nlm

The turn signals fail at least 3 to 4 times a day while driving and sometimes stop as im sitting and waiting to make a turn . emergency flashers do the same thing ,they work when they want to . have had some close calls on getting hit doing lane changes because of this problem .

I have a 1999 v-6 oldsmobile alero and it continually overheated. my mechanic told me a number of people have been having the same problems and that it had to do with a faulty gasket. *ak

The coolant started leaking into the oil. vehicle was taken to the dealer, pence oldsmobile, april 24, 2003, due to engine ticking. advised oil appeared to have not been changed in 1 yr. i advised the service oil was changed every 3 months less than 3000 miles. oil was "gunky" and thick like vaseline. vehicle also loosing coolant. oil was changed and engine to clean of gunk on 04/24/03. 07/5/03, coolant tank low 15 miles later coolant tank refilled again.. 07/06/03, vehicle parked. 07/7/03, before leaving for work, coolant refilled again. no leakage on ground. after about traveling about 8 miles, while stopped at a stop light the vehilce started to tremble & make sounds. drove approx 1 mile to employers parking lot and called tow truck to tow it to. dealer service dept informed me oil pump o-ring, intake gasket, valva cover gasket and pcv valve needed replacing and there could possibley be internal engine damage.. the vehicle was picked up on 07/11/03 between 5:30-6pm, driven 20 miles and parked until 07/12/03 until 5:30pm..vehilce driven another 20 miles and coolant light came on again. coolant refilled. sun 07/13/03, vehicle driven 10 miles and coolant light on again. coolant was refilled vehicle parked until 07/14/03. vehicle driven back to dealer on 07/14/03, and left with service dept.. i had just paid $757.80 for repairs and 24 hrs later the vehicle was doing the same thing. approx 1hr after i left the dealership, they called to inform me that the water pump was now gone and needed replacement. complaint made to oldmobile customer service but no action taken. the vehilce had 63000 miles and service as required. this problem seems to be a defect from the manufactorer.. when the coolant was low, prior to water pump problem of 07/12/03, the coolant was leaking into the engine. *ak

The consumer noticed a grinding noise when the brakes were applied. the manufacturer was contacted and was told the rim was cracked and the tire lost air. *ak the consumer was told by two different dealers the tires slipped on the rim and had broken the seal. the tire deflated somewhat, and caused the auto level alarm to go off. the alloy rims by the manufacturer were defective and caused the problem. *scc *jb

We own a 1999 oldsmobile alero. a month and a half ago we noticed a weird odor emanating from the trunk. for a while we thought it was mildew, though it gave my wife a headache once or twice. while servicing the car for an unrelated problem the technician suggested it was mildew. as the weather warmed up the problem disappeared. with the return of cold weather last week the smell reappeared with a vengeance. we feared it was exhaust and put a carbon monoxide detector in the trunk which registered positive. we took it to a gm service department and they located the problem as a faulty rear defrogger antenna control module. it was heating up and melting the plastic shell of the module. we're glad they located the problem and fixed it, but are worried that other people may encounter this and not know what it is or not get it checked, like we did for a while.*jb

The plastic cover that covers the buckle has broken off and the seat belt is hard to use as the buckle always falls to the floor. it makes it difficult to reach the buckle to hook up. *jb

Drivers side window mechanism broken. window fell while driving on interstate. what was found after door inside panel taken off was many broken plastic clips. these clips attach to the window and window regulator. after investigation through several olds dealers and used car parts dealers was that this is a known problem for which a service bulletin is in effect. of note, you cannot purchase replacement clips for the window. in order to correct the problem, you must purchase the entire window motor, regulator and clips for which are not guaranteed to not break again. this unit costs over $250. we feel that this is a safety violation due to the fact that the slightest nick in the window can cause fatal damage if driven down the road.

While driving, the speedometer and bells come on intermittently, at least 2-3 times a week. *nlm *tt

1999 olds alero 3.4l; stopped at traffic light, at idle in drive, speedometer pegged to 140mph, and held for ~10 sec. upon chaning of the light, i tried to accelerate, and throttle was not available, similar to what occurs when the speed limiter is exceeded. the condition occured for an additional 10 seconds, then returned to normal speed reporting and engine operation. no ses light not traction control alret were witnessed during the event. subsequent reading of the ecm trouble codes shows no 'snapshot' data of an impending fault.

We purchased this car in july 2002 from classic chevrolet in owasso, ok. we also purchased an extended warranty. in december the car was hit from the rear by a hit and run driver. in january the engine began to knock. i called the warranty place and got permission to take it to a mechanic, he said it was the intake manifold gasket, replaced it when it still knocked he said it would take awhile for all the water to get out of the engine. we took it back, and got a run around for 4 weeks, finally called the warranty place told them he wasn't getting it fixed and requested permission to take it to a different shop. granted then when they found out it needed a new engine they refused to pay for it, said they would only contribute a sum of money toward fixing it. i called gmac because they financed the warranty, one person told me that gm should honor the warranty and so i have a call in to a dealer in pittsburgh, ks. we no longer have a gm dealer in our town. my point is that someone needs to make this right and put a new engine in my car at no more expense to me. when i talk to gm i will be letting them know that i found your site and checked it out, and lodged a complaint. i am unsure of the exact date of the incident and since it is 4:15am am unable to call and get it. *nlm

I bought my car with 14 miles on it. in the first year, i had to have the molding on the doors replaced because they leaked. the drivers side window fell into the door. i've been told that it is my regulator that needs to be replaced. i also found a broken clip just sitting inside my door. you can't buy just a regulator or clips so i will need to buy those parts plus the motor which will cost at least $280. my rotors also needed to be shaved down because they were warped and my brakes needed to be replaced and now, only 5 months later, they need to be totally replaced because they are warped again and my brakes will have to be replaced as well. this is the worst car i've ever owned! my first and last experience i will ever have with gm!! i realize things happen to cars, but i would expect oldsmobile to acknowledge these re-occurring problems and be held accountable to fix them. *nlm

While driving home from work, the backseat of my car started on fire. this was due to the rear defogger modular. thank god no one was in the back. it cost 4,000 to repair. my rear defogger was repaired and about a month later, it wouldn't work again. we took it back only to find out that the wire harness was starting to melt again. we also have had problems with a banging in the front passenger side. we can't find the cause of this problem.

This complaint is similar to complaint numbers 563702, 712756, 724936. late last year, i had to have the key lock cylinder and security chip in the ignition/key system replaced to the tune of several hundred dollars (problem with fidelity warranty service) and now the key cylinder which was reported to have been replaced was apparently not replaced. now i can't start my car with the key. the key will not turn, like putting your car key in another car. it wouldn't turn the lock. i have noticed several times when i couldn't turn the car off all the way but the key would come out. i have also found the same problem in other gm cars that i use professionally. the car key comes out from time to time when the car is running, or when the car isn't turned all the way off.... it's not a constant problem but it is a problem. *jb

I have a 1999 oldsmobile alero with a 3.4l v6 engine that leaks coolant from the intake manifold gaskets. my dealer is jim muir oldsmobile, who put me in contact with gm customer service. they claim no knowledge of the problem. according to the internet, there are thousands of vehicles with the problem. my father, who works at gm says that at least seven people he knows in his office have had repairs done. gm needs to acknowledge the issue and start fixing them.

1999 oldsmobile alero/vin #[xxx] summer i lost the air conditioning in my car. in nov, i deployed with the af to the middle east. upon return i was disappointed since i had completely forgotten the ac didn't work in my car. i took it to a repair shop for a recharge and freon. after that, it worked for less than 2 days and started blowing hot air again. i returned to the repair shop, this time they put it on all the gauges and saw it wouldn't hold a charge. they took the car for a quick ride, and ran the ac for about 10 minutes. when we stopped, there was a really bad smell. they sprayed everything with a blue spray and saw bubbles on the hose line. they looked closer and noticed the side and underside of the hose was burned through both the covering and the hose itself, and maintain it was caused by the hose being a little too long and being able to rest up against the engine. am i really the only owner of a 1999 alero that has experienced this problem? i can't believe i should be responsible for the replacement of this hose (which is a pretty extensive job). this is the second summer i've been without ac, and they have been pretty hot and unpleasant summers, (although not quite as bad as the middle east). i've already invested $79.95 to have the ac checked out, charged, freon added. right now i'm i very dissatisfied oldsmobile owner. i've checked the defect investigations and recalls, and found no other mention of this design defect, but i still maintain that this couldn't be a one of a kind. what do you suggest i do from here? i don't feel i should have to pay to have the hose replaced, since i did nothing to cause the hose to burn/melt. one tie wrap would have been a simple, inexpensive solution, but now it's way beyond that point. please help me with this. the summer isn't cooling off, and i can't buy any chocolate candy bars to calm me down because they all melt faster than i can eat them. thanks, and i'm anxious to hear back from you.*ak information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

I own a 1999 oldsmobile alero with a 3.4l engine. at a cost of $652.01, on 28-october-2003 i had service performed on my vehicle because i was loosing coolant at regular intervals and it was not leaking onto the ground. the severe cause for concern was after i had refilled my coolant reservoir, drove approximately 3 miles, and all of the coolant was gone. the temperature guage shot up to the red zone, and i pulled over immediately. i had the car towed to the dealer and they indicated that this was a common problem for vehicles with this engine. they replaced the intake gasket and i was on my way. a few weeks later i noticed the coolant level was low again, and i had to add more coolant. i took the car back to the dealership on 25-november-2003. they checked the car and said they could find no leaks. i continued to drive the car. consistently, every 2 weeks, i was refilling the coolant resevoir. this has been happening until recently (february 2004). in late february 2004 i started losing coolant at a much faster rate, about 3 day intervals. on 2-march-2004 my car did not start the first 2 times i tried, on the third it caught. i decided to inspect the oil, using the dip stick, and found that the oil was a thick goo. this prompted me to call gm and the dealership to identify my options for having this problem resolved. i am frustrated, aggrevated, annoyed, among other things, and i fear that had this gone undetected, the oil would have gotten to a state where it would not have allowed the engine to function, perhaps leading to an accident. not only do i fear for my safety, but i am concerned that having a severe problem like this "fixed" only to find that it happens again will only lead to the samething happening yet another time. how many times will i have to have this problem fixed? is this a recurring safety concern?

Caliper made out of aluminum will not release when applied. i have purchased several new brake pads and 2 sets of rotors before a mechanic found the problem and he said it happened a lot on this model.*ak

I have taken the vehical to be fixed under warranty 3 time starting in july 2000, sept 2001 at the same dealership (schaumburg olds) and third time to martin j kelly. first two time, the problem was that the when depressing the brakes i got a pulsation and vibration felt through the pedal. the third time, the rotors sounded as if theyw ere grinding and braking was difficult to apply. first time the vehicval had 7957 miles and third time 21,000 miles. i am going to take the vehical back again next week because the grinding sound has now returned even when brakes are not applied and the car is rolling. there would appear to be a manufacturer defect for the vehical to require such a repeated number of trips to the dealer. the dealers have resurfaced the rotors and may have changed them on one occasion. my concern is wehether the brakes on the vehical will fail at some point in time as a result of this rotor/brake issue.*ak

The lower intake gasket & oil pump drive o-ring seal is leaking coolant internal & is mixing with oil, engine will need to be replaced. this car is only 2 1/2 yrs old, the intake gasket and o-ring seal should not leak fluid; this must be a manufacturer's defect. i have taken the car in for service (fitzgerald auto mall- maryland) consistently. .... idlerpulley - i had the serpentine belt replaced in nov 2001(113.38). in february while driving on the interstate all of car systems began to fail. once the alternator was drained dry and the car coolant, the battery died, because the serpentine belt came off. after two hours in the rain we were able to get the belt back on and i took the car to the dealership the following day. the dealership discovered the idler pulley bearing was loose and needed to be replaced...this cost $117.47. the dealership would not pay claim any liability, because it had been two months since they had replaced ther serpentine belt and felt anything could of happened since november. i am sure it is not common for an idler pulley bearing to become loose, this may be a manufacturer's defect. thank you. *ak

When it rains, there appears a puddle of water on each side of the floor in the back seat. the dealer could not find any leaks, but it still leaks. *ak

In order to keep the car stopped, it was necessary to apply an excessive amount of pressure to the brake pedal. there was also a pulsation when applying the brakes. diagnosis: pad and rotor failure. according to dealership, "necessary to replace the pads and rotors per bulletin." on my invoice it was written, "all warranty repairs are a one time out of warranty goodwill policy adjustment. vehicle is out of warranty in terms of time." the vehicle was fine after the repairs. that is, it was fine until now (3000 miles later). i am now having similar problems with the brakes. i am due to take the vehicle back in and have the brakes examined.*ak

This is about the third time that i have brought the alero in for repair for the same problems. the service dept claims that they can not fix the problem since they can not reconstruct the problem. however, the problems are: during and after it rains the drivers side floor is wet, the truck pops open, the dashboard instrument panel fails, the radio fails, the tail lights fail, the keyless entry system fails, and the car doesnt start. the problems that they have fixed already have been both driver side and passenger side windows had to be replaced, the lights on dash board fixed and noise comeing from under the back part of the car. i gave them the car on 12/24/01 and told them i do not want it back until its completely fixed. *ak

I was driving down the road at about 15 mph and i rolled down the window. while lowering it i heard a very loud bang, and it scared me so i stopped. tried to roll the window back up but i could hear pieces of glass moving around so i stopped. the glass broke and the window would only go back up 75 % of the way. my husband had to pull it up with his hand. we will be taking it to the dealership tomorrow.*ak

The passenger seat does not lock into place adequately. it rolls forward and backward anytime it is adjusted and must be manually locked into place after each adjustment to prevent rolling. the possible dangers included losing footing when stepping into the vehicle to sit down and the seat rolls back and rolling forward when braking into the front windshield.*ak

The driver's side power window fell to the bottom of the driver's door while trying to roll up the window. the body shop determined the cause to be the glue coming unsealed from the window and its clip on one side of the window and the other clip broke from the pressure. the 4 clips are not available individually; 2 must be purchases with the glass on which they come attached and 2 with the power window regulator. there is a national backorder on the regulator parts, but no reports of a defect or problem. this window is cross-referenced to the 1999/2000 pontiac grand am, also. consequently, i am without a window in the fall rainy season and am faced with over $700 in manufacturer's part replacements.

Rotors refaced and pads replaced with only 22500 miles on vehicle (all at my expense). i find it very odd that rotors have to be refaced with only 22k miles on a vehicle. the dealer was asked 4 1/2 months ago to check the brakes and their idea of checking the brakes consisted of driving the car, which obviously didn't show them that there may have been a problem arising with the rotors. furthermore after reading many of the complaints on this site it seems as though there may be a problem that general motors is not telling us about. lets hope no serious accidents happen because of this problem.*ak

Started car while driver's door still opened, released emergency brake and then suddenly rear window imploded. 90% of glass shattered into pieces and fell into back seat of car. my car was parked at my job's parking lot from 9:00am to 7:00pm. it was 80f-85f degrees weather this day. it was hot in my car. no signs of vandalism.

Twice i have had get my rotors resurfaced or replaced, my gas gauge everytime i fill up it bounces up and down and the clear coat on the hood of the vehicle is coming off. this vehicle needs to have a recall on the brake system due to a lot of people that i have talked with and many on the internet complaining about having to replace there rotors or get them resurfaced way before the manufactured time limit. i bought my car with 29, 000 miles on it and have had to resurface or replace the rotors twice. is this normal???

At 4,571m on 01/13/2000 dealer machined rotors to remove shimmy from frontend. i was told by dealer new cars are not designed to be driven in the city for any length of time. problem occurred again on 06/19/2000 at 8,725m. second time around dealer installed new front brake rotors and pads per tsb from gm. i was told problem will not occur again. on 06/15/2001 at 17,064m the dealer replaced front rotors and pads again. now absolutely guaranteed to never happen again or they'll contact the main engineering of gm to rectify situation.*ak

The rotors on my 1999 alero have had vibration problems beginning in february 2000. at 12458 miles, the front rotors were replaced. at 24664 miles, all four rotors were resurfaced. at 30964 miles, the front rotors were replaced again. i now have just over 38000 miles and there is severe pulsation in the brakes again.

Windshield wiper on drivers side does not stay on windshield. during rain storm, going 60mph on interstate, wiper starts across windshield, goes in a semi circle, out away from glass then hits windshield. it goes back and does the same thing, never clears the glass from rain. if a truck goes by and sprays water, snow,slush, there is no way the windshield clears. you can't see a thing. this has alsmost caused an accident. we have called the olds dealership and also where we bought the vehicle and all the answers we get is that we have to live with it. they tried putting a new wiper on it but that did not solve the problem. someone is going to get killed if this can't be fixed. we have had no luck in getting someone to look at this. a mechanic did a test drive, saw what it did, but could not offer an answer. would appreciate someone either looking into this or at least to give us a call. thank you. keith & margaret downs. *ak

This is the second time the rotor on the front right side has warped. i had it replaced at around 34000 miles (january 2000) and now, at 63,500 miles, it is needing replacing again. the steering wheel shakes when lightly applying pressure to the brakes at 55-70 mph, the same as what brought me into the dealership the first time around. i am no longer under warranty (3/36) so i will probably have to pay for the replacement (estimate was $270+ from a local shop) for the replacement. there needs to be more investigation on the '99 alero, maybe even a recall to fix what is causing the problem.*ak

The car has had five complaints issued to the dealer in the past 11 months, regarding driver's side door lock, automatic trunk latch, power failures. the dealer has been very good about attempting repairs, finding in the last two complaints that water is leaking into the fuse panel. the previous complaint resulted in a new fuse box, and computer. the last complaint resulted in another new fuse box. while i do like the car, and my dealer, i am losing faith quickly in the car itself. i am uncomfortable going long distance with it due to its apparent regular power failures. it is a nuisance to have it towed and to be without it for days at a time. i am also concerned about shorts and fires since the electrical system is involved. i am not sure what the next step is, but the car is not reliable to me.

When it rains the electrical system gets fouled. in one case my speedometer indicated 140 mph but i was stopped at a light. in another case evertime i touched the break the automatic door locks would relock (even if they where locked and i was traveling at 65 mph) in the same time the interior dome light would turn on every time i hit the break. when i started the car up again everythign worked but the radio and clock where out. i checked all the applicable fuses but none of them seemed to be burned out. another time there was alot of rain the car put the speedometer at 0 mph when i was travelling at approximatly 65 mph and the security warning light went on. if this electrical problem persists some of the electrically assisted components in the car could fail and cause death or injury.

Driver side daytime running lamp is dim. can be seen from about 10 feet away. took it in to dealer, dealer told me that it may have been in an accident but cannot prove. dealer made an attempt to fix the problem and said the bulbs were within specs and that they couldnt do nothing more. contacted manufacturer, was told to get a second oppinion. manufacturer then called dealer and dealer told them that the car had been in an accident and that they couldnt fix it. (when car was bought no accident was reported on the car) . i feel as though i am being ignored and i think that if i go out on a foggy morning and no one is able to see my lights because it is so faint,it could potentially be harmful to myself and my children. manufacturer does not want to honor warranty, bottom line.

I did not have the cruse control set, nor was i using it. as i entered an intersection after i stopped, i touched the gas pedal and it went to the floor unaided and sped me into the intersection. this happened to me on two different ocassions on my way to work. i am so afraid of this car that i am now driving not over 30 mph to and from work and parking the car - not to drive it elsewhere. oldsmobile refuses to release me from my lease. the shop cannot find the problem. oldsmobile says they must duplicate the problem. i am afraid it will duplicate while i am driving and cause a serious accident. i can get no help from gm or oldsmobile. since it is a leased vehicle, all i want is released from the lease so that i can purchase a safer car. thanks for your help.*ak

This problem was found by my husband on each occurance, i am scared for our safety and the safty of others because i never would have known this if my husband did not stay right on top of things. this is very dangerous for consumers and others because i feel that if the brakes fail due to this problem some innocent persons can seriously get hurt along with our own family. please e-mail me back regarding this matter so maybe the lifes of others can be secure.

While aplying brakes pedal would slowly go to the floor if you pumped it it would come back and pedal presure felt mushy. while gotng down a hill, pedal went to the floor. took to gmc dealer and he said brake fluid was contaminated and warranty wouldnt cover repairs. it cost 2100$ to fix it this car has only been seviced at gmc dealers brake fluid had a greenish couler to it .insurance adjuster took a sample idont no the results of it.*ak

Each and everytime i step on the brakes i fear losing control. whenever i step on the brakes the car begins to shake or pulsate or both, at times it becomes really hard to stop. (my emergency brakes are not in working order as well) i made two attempts going on a third to resolve this problem (plates were recut by dealer) but with no success i'm forced to make an offical complaint. i believe this failure to produce/maintain a safe vechile is both the mfg & dealers fault. *ak

I purchased my 1999 oldsmobile alero on 4/20/00. four days later, the car overheated. it overheated approximentley 10-12 times after that, each time with me bringing it back to the selling dealership to fix the problem. each time i took the car back, something in the engine was replaced and i was told it was ok. no more than 5 miles down the road, the car would overheat. it seemed to be a mystery to everbody. finally, i suggested to the dealership to possibly change the thermostat. they did and that ended the overheating problem. now, a month later, the factory warranty is up- so olds wont help me, the dealerships warranty is up, so they wont help - they blame olds. i do have an extended warranty, but i dont think it covers a lot of the repairs that need to be done. ive already had to pay $250 before it totally broke down. and besides this has been going on since i got the car when it was within the "bumper to bumper". the engine will not hold antifreeze (been going on for about 2 week), we put it in and 5 min. down the road its gone! its started overheating again, and right now is totally undrivable!! i have to use my works company car (lucky they are so nice) to get back and forth to work with. i bought a 1999 so that i would have a reliable car that i could trust to not give me these kinds of drastic problems! - so bad that it doesnt even work anymore!! i have been on the phone with oldsmobile numerous times and they are of no help!!! so, i've come to my last straw, ive gone to a consumer lawyer to help me figure this mess out...oh yeah, did i mention that i am a 20 year old female - what do i know??? - i have saved all of my receipts, have pics, and a file with olds. someone has to do something!! i want revenge and to be compensated for this!!! and the way the lawyer talks, i cant sue unless they dont contact me when they recieve the letter of demand to fix the car. but obviously they will. i want more than that. im ready for a battle!!*ak

This problem arises from something in the structure of the struts or wheel well rubbing against the edge of the front tires and abrating the thread and steel belting away until the tire fails. this problem may arise from contact with the wheel well when making sharp turns, as the tire did not fail until about 30,000 miles of normal driving, and as the left hand side front tire is somewhat less abrated round the same circumference area. this problem made my car a death trap. replacing the tires will not make the car safe to drive for very long, if at all. this problem is urgent regarding the safety of huge number of other alero drivers and everyone who is around it in traffic. time is of essence in giving attention to this problem. many lives may be at stake. as the clock ticks, if fear what other alero drivers and those in traffic around it may face if the other aleros' have front tires to blow out. please assure me that this problem is getting the attention that it should have from those responsible for dealing with it. *ak

On 2 separate occasions, 10 thousand miles and several months apart the ignition cylinder froze leaving the vehicle unable to start and the driver stranded. first failure occurred at dealer during service and customer was not notified of failure. second failure happened in customers driveway and required towing. tow truck owner mentioned he had seen this problem on other alero's recently. *ak

Water leaking into fuse box, electrical system problems. dealers says coming from sunroof. supposedly fixed leak twice. 1st time,also replaced fuse block. week later, water still getting in fuse block. 2nd time, fixed leak-claimed screw for sunroof not properly sealed and in wrong position. relocated screw and sealed unit. another week, another leak. water getting into fuse block again, causing stereo amplifier to make loud humming noise, while car is off. consumer removed fuse for amplifier to stop humming. contacting dealership on monday.

1)the abs braking system feels weak and a substantial vibration of the entire steering wheel and front panel of the car occurs when brakes are applied. car does not stop sufficiently unless brakes are fully depressed. 2)the car has not been able to successfully start multiple times and is currently unable to start. the battery has been checked and is fine. no recharging of battery occurs even after jump-starting and running the engine for a lengthy period of time. 3) left rear door panel has parts that are falling off and loose. 4) parking brakes are weak and fail to prevent rolling on inclines. additionally, there has been a recall placed on this model for failure to conform to federal/canada motor vehicle saftey standard 201, "occupant protection in interior impact." *ak

When pressing on the brakes the steering wheel vibrates;mechanic said, the rotor is warped and that happens sometimes under normal were./powersteering makes noise when car is idling; mechanic said the engine oil is low./i find water on the back seat floor after it rains

The bolts t hat hold the hub caps on have plastic inserts.they seem to have melted and fused to the stud.because of this i am unable to remove hup caps to remove wheels to rotate e. *ak

The car trembled horribly upon deceleration from high speeds and/or upon a hard stop. i took the car to the dealer at approximately 16k miles, complaining of this problem. they didn't find anything. now that the problem is more severe, and i took the car back to the dealer (at 20k miles) and told them to check the rotors. viola, they found the problem. it's warped rotors. now i have to replace the front brakes! consumer complaints via the edmund's town hall conferences indicates that i am not the only consumer having rotor problems on the 1999 alero. i'm beyond the warranty so i have to pay for the repair. i think there is a manufacturer's defect and more investigation is needed. thank you. *ak

The car's brake rotors warp every 1500 miles resulting in a loss of braking. the rotors have been machined and/or replaced on 3 occasions but the problem reoccurs. when braking with the warped rotors, the abs wheel speed sensors hit the "bad" spot on the rotors and assume a lock-up is emminent. the abs system then releases pressure on the brakes and braking distance exceeds safe levels. *ak

Both front seats have a razor sharp edge under the front seats where the rear passengers put their feet. my daughter, while wearing sandels cut her foot on it. leather shoes have been damaged also. the factory will not alow the dealer to deburr the edges. they say it would violate federal law. material was glued on and fell off. the car in the showroom has the same problem. we are having no success with the factory in solving the problem. *ak

I drove the vehicle over a snow mound created by the snow plows after a pass along the street. after that the vehice made a terrible scapping noise. i stoppped the vehicle three times to check and see if ice or snow was packed up in the wheel well or under car. after getting back to work one of the guys crawled under my vehicle and said there was a metal line hanging to the ground that was leaking what smelled like brake fluid. i called roadside assisstance and the vehicle was picked up. the brake line was dislodged and dragging the pavement from just driving over snow. the manufacturer says it is road damage and i must pay for it. anything i drive over is considered road damage. but you can't drive in alaska without driving over snow. but if simply driving over snow can dislodge my brake line this seems pretty dangerous to me, since i live in alaska. i asked if they protected the brake lines. i think they should be better protected better then what they are. i am worried about driving my vehicle now. i feel it is unsafe. please help.

Upon heavy acceleration the vehicle veers to the left and control is limited. i have reported this to the service department of my dealer, however, they say this is "normal." this condition is so severe that i feel it is a dangerous condition especially if the driver is not prepared for it.

On three occasions i have driven my car to my destination and when i go to get back in the car it won't start. it have left me stranded each time and a tow truck was called. the dates this happened was 8/22/99, 9/14/99-9/17/99 & 9/22/99-current. the dealership still has my car to this date. they admit that there is a defect which they thought was the fuel pressure regulator because they've had this problem in other alero's, but apparantly that wasn't it. i forgot to add that after the car sits for awhile, it starts back up, so the it won't duplicate itself at the dealership. you never know when this will happen, but i have noticed that it has occurred within 24 hours after filling the tank up with fuel and i told them this because i thought it may have something to do with it not starting up or something in the fuel line was defective. i personally think that the car needs to be recalled. i've only had the car for 5 months and its been in the shop twice. the first time it happened it was on a weekend and the dealership was closed. so far my car has been in the shop cumulative 15 days. i think this is a safety issue because it has left me and my son stranded and i don't know if this has happened to anyone else, but i feel that the consumers need to know this. this is my only means of transportation and i do not feel comfortable in that car any longer and am not taking it back. we have yet to work out a resolution to this problem. please contact the dealership and the manufacturer (general motors) to investigate this problem. this could result in a much more serious problem if the defects aren't detected. i spoke with brent walls, gm factory representative @ 1-800-823-0055 x8174. i have also filed a complaint with oldsmobile 1-800-442-6537 file #990072405 and with the attorney general's office and bbb autoline. please contact me with any suggestions or to discuss this claim. i appreciate any help you can give me.

The vehicle is equiped with an ignition system, that has a security chip inside the key, which is read by the ignition system, and then the car is started. i have experienced two problems with the system,in which the car will not start and the "security" light on the dash starts blinking, this happens with both original keys. when i called the road side assistance people they tell me to leave the keys in the ignition for 15 minutes. i have talked to other people who own gm vehicles, and they seem to have had the same problem, i think it deserves to be looked into. thank you

When the consumer tried to place the vehicle in park, the knob on the shift column fell off and could not be placed in gear. (all done with the consumers foot on the brake) consumer had immediately taken the vehicle to the dealer-in which he and a service tech shut the vehicle off (consumers foot was still on the brake). *scc

On fourth set of new rotors, just left shop, problem returns one week! help! car is dangerous! dealer new about it to. no safety defec tlisted. *ak

Have replaced rotars and pads on front 3 times at pinebelt. there is a service report out (#00-05-23-002a). gm protect plan tells me they don't pay for that and the dealer tells me i will probably pay. i need help from somewhere. the front is vibrating terribly and this could cause an accident. another olds dealer states that they don't cover someone elses work. i can not and should not pay for an inferior product. it has a service report so there is a problem and it is not getting fixed. dt

Both front seat belt retractors are not operating properly, belt would intermittently get caught in door. dealer notified, and informed consumer that seat belts meet specifications, and nothing else would be done. please feel free to provide any further details on this matter. *ak
