1999 HONDA Odyssey

The transmission was replaced under the recall at around 53000 miles in 2007. It has failed again recently at 95000 miles, which is only around 42000 miles on the new/rebuild transmission.

I just bought this car from its first owner and drove it a few thousand miles. My child was in the car when it failed. This could have been potentially life threatening.

I am the original owner of my 1999 Honda Odyssey. The first transmission failed before the warranty was out. It was replaced by the dealer. The second transmission went out in November 2010. I replaced it with a rebuilt transmission with a 3 year warranty. The cost of the replacement was a little over $4000.00. This transmission has now failed and is being replaced with another rebuilt transmission. It is still under the 3 year warranty. The back automatic door on my Honda does not work properly. The rear driver side door does not shut and the alarm comes on. I have to get out of the car and push on the door until it clicks shut. The front passenger side door recently failed and would not open. It cost me $770.00 to have it repaired.

Single owner, meticulously maintained 12-year old vehicle with 104,800 miles when torque converter failed. Honda’s extended warranty (offered as a result of class action suit) ended after 7 years despite my lower than average mileage. Dealer said repair would cost $5,400… for a vehicle valued at about $3,000. By adhering to Honda’s recommended service schedule, I expected to drive this vehicle for 250,000. Would not have been surprised by this level of quality in an American vehicle but am shocked and dismayed that Honda has failed to stand behind their product.

I bought the van with 65K miles ,and the transmission started to slip at about 103K ,and finally at about 105K the transmision failed. I called the Honda dealer to find out if they would help me but they said the transmission was already changed and I do not qualify for recall. I went to independent mechanic and had the transmission changed. Also, few weeks ago I tried to open the passenger door and the door was stuck and when the handle broke after trying so many times.

Transmission would buck and slip in 3rd & 4th gears. Would drive only if placed in 1st & 2nd gears. Required new cluches, solenoids, and converter. Went to independent transmission repair. Honda wanted $5,400 to replace with rebuilt.

The automatic door on the drivers side will not open with any of the automatic door openers. It is also very difficult to open manually and extremely difficult to close and lock. We have removed the seat next to this door because it has opened up when driving, and we need to lock out the system.

side sliding door handle broke off when opening door. Pin that sheared off and that door pivots on appears to be made of plastic. These doors normally are powered open. Due to problem with switch door would only open manually. When opening manually these doors take considerably more force to open than a normal sliding door. With my little experience opening manually I apparently pulled too hard! This seems to me to be a flaw in the design of the handle.

replaced transmission at 90,00 mile, now engine light on again with not even 70,000 miles on new transmission, what can I do..??

On about June 25th,the transmission on my 1999 Honda Odyssey started to show signs of failure (when driving over 10 miles it would shift with a bang and ,at times, would grind when shifting on reverse.I took it to a transmission shop that retrieved code PO740(Torque Converter clutch solenoid circuit)from the vehicle’s computer.They explained to me that the clutch inside the transmission was breaking up into small pieces that were clogging the Torque converter clutch solenoid and that the transmission needed work done to it at a cost of $3,000.00.I understand that Honda extended the warranty on that year transmission to 7 years and 9 months or 100K miles.Honda also states that those affected transmissions begin to show signs of failure at around 60K miles.My Odyssey has 56,800 and,i missed the warranty by a couple of months.Is my opinion that all those affected (defective)transmissions should have been recalled and replaced at no cost by Honda as soon as the problem surfaced.

doors – first complaint (sept. of 1999) was regarding the doors not opening, not closing, and the “buzzer” constantly sounding. The have replaced the sensors and readjusted things multiple times. At this point the dealer will be replacing the sensors for approx. $190 (significant discount from actual cost if we had to pay.transmission- we are putting in the 4th transmission as soon as it comes in. We had an extended warranty which replaced the transmission at 58,000 miles (8/02) for a $50 deductible. At 78,000 (4/03 – less than 8 months later) the replacement went bad and was replaced at no charge to us. We currently have 112,000 on the vehicle and it is “bad” again. Our dealer has arranged for the $6000 repair to be done with all kinds of assistance for $525.xx. My feeling is that we should not pay anything but at this point we have no choice but to do so. I have tried calling Amer. Honda and have left 3 messages for the “rep” that has opened a file on our complaint (put in motion by our dealer’s mgr). Our dealership has been wonderful to us: giving us a loaner van each time the car is in for repairs (my husband is disabled and can only get in and out of a van), picking up and dropping off the vehicle, given us great pricing on repairs, etc. but I would expect that as we are on our 9th Honda from them and our kids are on the 3rd.I am totally at a loss as to how to proceed since Calif. won’t return calls. Court? What?

Check engine light comes on-checked at dealership, code P0740 Torque Converter Clutch system failure. Dealer quoted repair costs of $6000 for transmission replacement. Have not had done because of cost and in doing research there are many Honda Oddysey owners with same problem. They are extending warranty on 2000-2001 but not standing behind 1999 Honda Oddyseys. There is a recall for the ignition switch. consumer states dealer will not be responsible if alarm is broken while performing the recall. consumer feels its not good business. ts

I spoke with eric at honda recall and campaign department--i told him that my car was having the exact same issue as the recall. the key can be removed while the car is in gear and it has rolled already. he told me that this was already repaired and even though it appears the repair failed and the car is still at risk--he says that honda must evaluate it first and they might repair it. or they may not.

Several times over past two weeks vehicle has stalled unexpectedly shortly after starting or while driving - dashboard lights and gauges (including odometer) all blank except 3 blinks of green "key" light (immobilizer indicator); accessories stay operational (radio, etc) but engine shuts off. will re-start after a few tries, typically; failed tries include engine starting while key held in start position but dying immediately when returning key to "run" position. will stay running if key is held between "start" and "run" location. when this happened while driving, was able to shift to neutral while coasting and restart the engine, holding key near start, to get enough runtime to get the car to a safe place off the road. recall to this effect apparently was performed back in 2002-2003; looks like recurrence of same problem?? what are my recourses?

Was driving vehicle on highway when the transmission failed. was nearly killed, as i was unable to move car into a safe area

Recently, while traveling on interstate 94, the check engine light came on in my vehicle along with a light that reads "tcs". shortly after these two lights came on, my vehicle began having problems accelerating. when i drive my vehicle, i have problems with the van taking off and maintaining stability once in motion. during travel on highways, freeways, interstates, or city streets, my vehicle violently shifts from first gear to second gear when i press on the accelerator, causing it to slow down unexpectedly before jerking into motion in the middle of traffic. also, during recent night time travel the headlights began to flicker, go dim then get bright again. the vehicle also slows down when turning corners then will suddenly jump into motion. also, the driver side passenger door recently went off track causing a screaming alarm to sound during travel. i have recently had to have the high pressure power steering line replaced because it had a hole in the upper hose.i am extremely concerned that the poor acceleration of my vehicle and the violent jerking from first to second gear will cause an accident. my vehicle is my only mode of transportation to work, school and any important place that i need to travel to.

Sliding door always was defective from 2006. always not closing to the end. one slider door outside handle not working from 2006, probably cable broken inside of slider door. sliding door handle is lose. my wife not using slider door more than 10 years, because it stock and can't open at all. front door lock also not working correctly. also i want replace all air back in my mini van, i never receive any paper recall from dealer.

I'm continuously having problems with both slider doors jamming ,sticking shut, saying they aren't shut all the way. used to be able to fix by pulling fuses to rest doors..now they won't even open manually at times. passenger side files open while driving

A recall notice was sent to me in march/2020. i have contacted a local honda dealer, and continue to get the same response that "no parts are available" a company this large should have come up with a solution by now. i'm getting to the point of being afraid to drive my vehicle. please have them remedy this situation!

There have been 2 recalls for my 99 honda odyssey. the first was on transmission a few years back n now there is one open for my airbags. well my transmission was never fixed by honda. and now i can’t get them to fix my airbags

Driver side automatic sliding door unlatched while driving on interstate. i got a emergency tone telling me something was wrong, but no indication on the dash. i found a couple recalls for this problem and stopped by the local honda dealer (piazza), but they said the vin has no recalls and the recall is too old. i just bought the vehicle a month ago. this is a safety issue known by honda and even if it is happening only now, the dealer should repair at no cost to me.

I believe strongly, it has to do with my ignition. my engine just quits without any warning. one time it quit on me when i was driving on a high way. and multiple times it quits on the regular driving on local roads.

I was driving the van and all of sudden without any warning lights stopped and could not move forward in my street

Driving the vehicle without sputtering or otherwise indicating a problem all gauges and engine cuts out, i can put the vehicle in neutral and usually it will restart and go, but lately not all the time. it may take getting to the side of the road putting it in park and restart 3 or 4 times and then stay running and not have a problem for a few days. when it does this on the interstate traveling at 70 mph with no warning, this can be dangerous for the person behind me. when it stops running and i lose power steering, brakes and coasting trying to restart while in neutral praying i don't get hit from behind as i navigate decelerating cutting across traffic to the shoulder. scary. chances are my airbag won't work either at this critical time if the brakes fail to stop me. all the built in safety features are not working.

Our 1999 honda odyssey has had the p0740 torque clutch converter solenoid circuit (open) code displayed numerous times, we thought since it was a serious issue and the transmission had already been replaced within 20,000 miles that we should actually take it to the dealer in marysville, wa and have them do a transmission flush then a supervisor and said no you should have us run a diagnostic by one of our master techs. after reiterating this seriousness of our transmission issue the code coming on and delays in shifting mostly just barely noticeable, they assured us if we paid $129 for a diagnostic that a master tech could get to the issue, however they later told us after we got the car back and called on the issue that an apprentice (not a master tech) had done the entire inspection and came up with no problems except a different code having to do with up bad catalytic converter which had never been an issue before and told us we may need to get that replaced soon. the transmission code p0740 came up on our way home from the dealership. i told them of the code and the research i have done and asked what else to do and they told me there is nothing that can be done that is a transmission death code and we would need to replace the transmission, to which i asked even though it was just replaced 20,000 miles ago and he said maybe you got a bad transmission. q: are they just all bad for this vehichle?

In 2008 we bought this van from the local honda dealer in gresham, or. shortly after we bought the vehicle we found out that our van was originally manufactured for sale in canada, and it was imported back in 1999 when the van was new. this information was never disclosed to us throughout the sale, and we only found out when we tried to have a second key made and the honda dealer said that the vin number didn't exist in their system. honda refuses to do any recalls that have been issued for this vehicle in the usa or canada. this has led to the vehicle dying multiple times at highway speed due to faulty ignition switch that should've been replaced back in 2002 when it was recalled in both canada, and the us.

I was driving on a crowded expressway when my car seized up completely due to a transmission failure which put me in an extremely dangerous situation. i was in the middle lane with three large semi trailer trucks in front of me, in back of me, and to the right of me on a 3 lane highway. the truck behind me had enough room to barely slow down but it almost crashed into me. i turned on my emergency flasher lights and was able to get the car onto the shoulder of a slightly uphill exit ramp, narrowly escaping serious injury. i was then able to very slowly move the car in first gear with the flashers going, and fortunately was close to a side street where i parked the car and had it towed to the nearest dealership. although honda replaced my transmission for free under the auspices of a class action lawsuit back in 2007, the car has low mileage for the life of the transmission. however, they are refusing to cover the replacement cost of the transmission. the transmission failure was sudden and literally seized up the car and put my life in danger. this doesn't seem to matter to honda. i am registering this complaint not only to get satisfaction from honda, but also to warn other odyssey owners that this may happen to them, and let them know this is potentially deadly. *tr

First, i'm just guessing on the date of purchase made to palm bay honda in palm bay, florida approximately 85 miles north of where i live. there is several recalls not taken care of. i am owed from honda reimbursement from caretender's authorized dealership working shop for doing the wireharness recall when my vehicle just stopped altogether plus the car rental (after i had been to honda dealership with the recall to be done a while before it happened) of which long time ago i wrote certified mail to the owner of honda in california and also federal trade commissioners in washington, d.c.. to this date, no refund issued to me. there are two separate recalls listed by you regarding locks/latches/etc. of which i had problems with since the very first day i bought the honda new is the reason for approximate incident date being back in 1998 and i've had about seven different invoices from different honda dealerships some noted (nwd meaning no work done) with the problems still existing today. the receipts may also be with you and/or the federal trade commissioners and still unresolved to this date. now, i just read about the problems i've been having with the ignition switch that is on your recall list and nothing has been mailed to me regarding this recall to be given to honda to be taken care of. why hasn't it? i don't even know if the new issues of the air bags exploding, as indicated through u. s. senator bill nelson's web page, involves my 1999 honda odyssey! finally, i'm the original owner and why does my vin number show o recalls? *tr

Going uphill on a curve at about 35 mph at 9:45pm with a slight drizzle. the tcs and engine lights came on and gears disengaged. gear was at d4. no power to drive the minivan uphill and van started to roll backwards and downwards. when accelerator was pressed, the rpm went up to 6000-7000 rpm but the gears remain disengaged. suspect transmission defect. set emergency lights on and roll over to the curb. parked and hitch a ride home. filed a complaint with nhtsa and reported it to american honda on 8/4/2014 as this is a very dangerous event. *tr

1999 honda odyssey. both of driver's and passenger's side sliding doors would not latch properly and could not be secured because both latches broke off . the driver side sliding door plastic latch cracked and broke, and the one on the passenger side sliding door broke off and detached. both sliding doors can not be secured. it was discovered because the passenger sliding door can not be closed, lead me to inspect the driver side sliding door, and it showed that the latch has been cracked and broke, but it is still in place. it allows the door to close but not latch properly. *tr

Our 1999 honda odyssey has relatively low mileage (~125000 miles) and it has been diagnosed as having transmission problem again. when it only had about 30000 miles, it had a transmission problem and its replacement was covered under manufacture warranty at that time. we searched the internet and found that the transmission problem is a very common for honda vehicles. we contacted america honda and they told us it has already passed the warranty period and they would not help with the transmission repair. we paid full sticker price for this van 14 years ago and wish it can last up to 200000 miles. now we are reluctant to pay for the high repair cost or we could not sell it at a satisfactory price. we are very unhappy with america honda's response and totally lost our trust in honda vehicles. *tr

My odyssey first had a transmission issue back in august, 2003, only 4 years and 42,000 miles and the dealer completed the repair without any cost since it is still within the manufactory warranty. the second time the transmission failed again in 2008 at 96,000 miles. i wrote a letter to american honda motor and they agreed to cover it with no cost. however, this issue resurfaced again. the very same symptoms have reoccurred and my car broke down on the freeway at 126,000 miles last week. had a mechanic checked it and it is the transmission issue. this van is my weekend car and i hardly drive it so i have only added 30,000 miles after the last transmission replacement in 2008. this proves to me that there is an issue with the design of the transmission and the odyssey transmission can only sustain roughly 40,000 miles before breaking down.

Transmission completely froze (locked-up). this is the second transmission in this vehicle, the first was replaced under a class action suit against honda. fortunately, driver was near side of road and recognized a problem prior to the complete lock-up, otherwise the van would have skidded to a stop in the middle of the highway. honda informs they will not provide any assistance with any replacement transmission and will only offer a 1 year warranty. it costs over $4000 to replace the transmission in this vehicle. honda is completely unsympathetic to the potential risks they are forcing on odyssey owners. this had happened to thousands of odyssey owners and honda need to be held accountable. *tr

Vehicle stop shifting gears first, unresponsive to accelerator. slipping constantly as it started motion. second gear not working at all. check engine lights and emergency light went on. can only operate on l1 gear. at the time was moving to costa rica. did not have time to fix in us. vehicle currently in costa rica. made flush and repairs but it does not work properly. parked most of the time. *tr

The car seems to consume motor oil and i have to add motor oils after certain miles. i did oil level check every month or bi-monthly and i started to realize that i was driving the van with very low oil low level. at first i thought it could be because the car is old but from my experience with other much older car, oil consumption has not been an issue. check with the dealer and other mechanics and they all gave me the same explanations that the issue is related to the mileage of the car (getting old). at the time i started to realize the issue, the car had only approximately 80k miles... *tr

Driving thru the mountain from kanab ut to flagstaff az on hwy 89 (scenic route) the transmission began to whine and tach out at 7000-8000 rpms in d4. vehicle would not respond, as if slipping. then down shifted to d3 and the same thing happened. out in the middle of nowhere, they limped into flagstaff at d2 and 40 mph. notified that the transmission was gone and needed to be replaced. honda refuses to assist with repairs even though they have know about their design flaw for years. *tr

There was a recall back on 4/25/00 for the door latch assembly. the recall # was 00v119000. i'm having the same exact problem again with the door not closing all the way. i called hennessey honda in woodstock, ga and they told me that they didn't have that recall on record. then they went on to say that they won't fix it again. i checked the history of the vehicle recalls and don't see where this was done. why should i have to pay for this repair when it was already determined that it's a manufacturer defect? is there a time limit on how long honda will fix this repair for free? *kb

Check engine light on with error code p0740 indicating transmission failure on 99 honda odyssey. according to the honda service person, honda won't pay any repair or replace cost because it's out of my extended warranty even though there were numerous similar complaints reported on 1999 - 2002 odyssey transmission problems including a recall and class action lawsuit in california against honda for 1999-2001 accord transmissions that showed the same malfunction code. i'm the original owner of the car with extended warranty. i have the car serviced regularly at the dealer. the car was at very low mileage without showing the transmission problem when the extended warranty expired at 2006. i believe honda should perform a "goodwill" repair on my transmission and pickup most cost instead for me to pickup the $5000 expense for the parts and labor or the option of getting a new car.. *kb

The passenger side sliding door on my 1999 honda odyssey has failed to open on many occasions and i didn't think of it as anything more than a nuisance. this time one of my children's fingers was caught in the door and we were unable to open the door either from the inside or the outside for several minutes until we got a passerby to force it open. his finger was significantly more damaged than if we had been able to immediately open the door, not to mention the panic and distress and being trapped. *tr

While driving on the highway the engine just quit, causing a loss of power, power steering, power braking, etc.... fortunately i was able to nurse the car to a spot along the highway to pull over. i was able to get the car restarted after a couple of minutes, and it continued to run fine until i was exiting the freeway, and the engine quit again while approaching the exit ramp. i coasted to the top of the exit ramp and was able to get the car restarted at the top of the exit ramp and drove home. i subsequently took the car to the honda dealership, where they diagnosed the problem as a faulty ignition switch.

Honda odyssey 1999 model auto transmission issue. in my particular case, it occurred pulling out of a parking lot into a busy street and the odyssey struggled to get up to a safe speed slipping it's way into various gears. i never thought about it but honestly this could have killed me and my family as we were attempting to pull out into a busy street. thank goodness i was not rear ended or worse and was able to pull the van into the most immediate parking lot. when i searched in the internet there are lot many complains on honda odyssey about the similar issues and honda has not done anything to address this issue so far. would like to request to consider this case and make necessary actions at the earliest before we loose more lives due to this issue. *tr

I have a 1999 honda odyssey ex with 190,000 miles. i have maintained this car very well. to my surprise, i just found out on 03/05/2011 that the transmission failed and needs to be replaced for about $1,500 (used) or $3,000 new. the engine lights had been on for a while but honda did not acknowlegde nothing wrong. too many honda odyssey's owners had the same problem. this is no doubt a defect with these transmissions. i request a full investigation on this matter. *tr

Check engine light was indicating that there was an egr valve issue. turned into much bigger underlying problem with the transmission. cleaned out the valve on 3 occasions and light kept coming on. transmission started slipping until it was no longer safe to drive...wouldn't drive in "drive". had to put it in 3rd, then 2nd and still it was very unsteady. brought it in and was told it needs a new transmission. honda already replaced the transmission 2 years after we bought it. we have maintained this vehicle religiously! we are very disappointed. it also makes this odd clicking noise inside the van...this appears to be electrical in nature.

Transmission recalled in 05 for defect, was replaced at that time with local dealer. july 29, 2008 transmission failed while traveling far from home and was replaced at my cost of $5,000 as i went 6 months past warranty. transmission is failing again and has to be replaced at my cost because i put 4,000 miles over the 36,000 mile warranty. contacted american honda for help and they will not assist me. the transmission has never been fixed for the original defect with the recall in 05, if it had, i certainly would not be told by honda that it needs it's 4th transmission. On august 9, 2010, our 1999 honda odyssey ex stalled while we were idling on an open drawbridge, on hwy 42 in sturgeon bay, wi. this is a two lane bridge, probably nearly a mile long, with no shoulder, so we were looking at a major traffic problem had we not been able to restart the car about a minute later and drive off the bridge. two days later, august 11, the car stalled while moving on port washington rd, in glendale, wi. at that point the instrument panel went dark. this time, we were able to coast to a stop in the right lane of 4 lane road, and were again able to restart the car, this time within about 30 seconds. the honda dealer's service department traced the problem to the electrical portion of the ignition switch and replaced the switch. we had the identical problem in 2004, with the odyssey once stalling on a busy freeway at 60 mph in the center lane. at that time there was recall in effect for this problem and the faulty ignition switch was replaced free of charge. the safety recall needs to renewed for this problem as these switches seem to last about 5 years and then go bad again. we are lucky we did not need to be towed a mile across a bridge, with 4 miles of cars backed up behind us. *tr

I have an honda odyssey van 99' and one of the sliding doors when out first then the other a cple months later. i've been stuck with it jammed open and had to ride home like that w children in the car and taking a turn and one of the door slid open, next to my 3yr.old while i was driving, its done that several times. but now neither of the doors work, so the kids have to climb over the front seat to get in for months now. i've taken it to the honda place and they say its the motor in both doors which will be 900 dollars each to fix! i don't have that. why has this problem that is a reoccuring problem in alot of honda vans not been recalled!? *tr

On june 28, our 1999 honda odyssey lx lost all electrical power and engine power while traveling on i-94 e bound between battle creek mi and the exit to i-69. the emergency flashers would not activate. we were able to coast to a stop on the shoulder, then after placing the car in park and switching off the ignition, i was able to restart the car. it ran fine for the next two hours, but the same thing happened while traveling south on i-75 north of dayton, oh. this time, i noticed the gauges came back on and was able to resume the cruise control and proceed with out stopping. in got case, traffic was not so heavy as to be a danger, and luckily we were not in the passing lane. the same failure occurred just before we made it onto our street, but for a shorter time and we continued home. the next night, while returning home on local streets, going about 35mph, this failure occurred again, but this time, we had the headlight on (it was about 9:15pm), and we lost all lighting (interior gauges and exterior). on june 30, the dealer was able to locate the problem - failed ignition switch electrical contacts. the dealer claims this car had been serviced for this problem previously as a result of a recall. i checked your online notices: may 16, 2002 nhtsa: 02v120000. electrical system ignition switch. this recall needs to be re-issued for this safety related problem. we would have had serious problems in bad weather; loss of windshield wipers as well as lighting and brake lights. and at night, it could have been very bad on the highway. The srs warning light stays on all the time when the car is running for my 1999 honda odyssey lx. it was sent to the dealer and had dt code 1-1. further check by the dealer in the second visit resulted in the diagnosis for "cable reel replacement" in the steering wheel. the charge for the initial diagnostics was $95 plus tax and the charge for parts and labor for the replacement of cable reel will be another $250. the cable reel in the steering wheel should not be damaged by normal driving for a vehicle at 54k miles. it has to be due to the bad design and/or manufacturing. the airbag system is an important safety feature and should be under factory warranty for an extended period of time. ironically, if the safety belt is malfunctioning and causes the srs light on, honda has a lifetime warranty for the repair and diagnosis cost. one can think that the seat belt may be damaged through normal or excessive usage. how could a driver damage the cable reel in the steering wheel when the airbag is never deployed? *tr

Transmission needed to be replaced at just over 56,000. did not have extended warranty coverage protection so was entirely absorbed by me. incident failure happened while on highway and safely made it back home with prayers and cautious driving techniques like a bad theme park ride. cost was over $2,000.00. replaced in feb. 2010. *cn

The decedent is a 3 month old female infant who was a passenger in a 1999 honda odyssey van. the infant was secured in a baby trend flex loc infant car seat (manufactured in 062809 hh, model # cs31029) and the base of the car seat was secured to a seat belt. the rear of the van was impacted by another vehicle, which caused the carrier to separate from the base. the infant, who was secured to the carrier, was ejected from the vehicle as a result of the impact. after the accident, the infant was transported to the hospital, where she was subsequently pronounced dead in the emergency room on january 30, 2010 at 16:02 hours. *tr

My 99 honda odyssey has been babied and taken care of by myself. i have never had a serious problem with the vehicle. i remember getting a letter from honda saying the trans. had an extended warranty of 10 years 100,000. i always had the trans. serviced at my mechanic with a t tech service every 25,000 miles.at 71,000 miles i noticed the trans. started to slam into the gear when it decelerated. i called a honda dealer and made an appointment to have the trans. looked at. i was told the trans. was not going into 1st gear but directly into 2nd gear. it shifted fine when i took it their. i told them it was slamming into gear when it downshifted. anyway i was informed the warranty had expired. i call american honda. i was informed again that the warranty had expired in 2006 at 109,000 miles.honda did extend the warranty but not 10 years. i received a factory warranty of 3 years 36,000 mile warranty and they extend the warranty to 7 years 109,000. that extended warranty included the first 3 years.so they really extended the warranty 4 years. they told my information and would determine if honda would pay for the cost of a new trans.. i was told it takes 2 days to make their decision. i was called the next day by gloria of american honda and she took the information again and then was asked what i wanted honda to do. when i told her to pay for the repair of my trans.. she informed me that was not going to happen. i then said then you have made your decision. she told she has not made no decision yet. i informed her their were over 2000 complaints at nhtsa about the honda odyssey 99 to 2002 transmission. and extending the warranty and replacing trans. with remaufactured ones with the same problem and failing again later leaving the $4000.00 repair to the owner. honda redesigned the trans. in 2003 and they have no failures. it has been 1 week and i still have not heard from american honda on their decision. i am joining a class action suit to get this car recalled. *tr

I have been having transmission problems with this van since 2003, honda did replace the transmission in january 2004, the van is a 1999, at that time i had about 30000 miles on it, october of 2007 my transmission completely went out while i was driving my son home from a sport event on the highway, both of us were very scared seeing as it just wouldn't accelerate, thank goodness no one behind us or they would have hit us, i was able to get to the side of the i90. i called honda is regards to this asking what the warranty was , they told me it was only a 3 year warranty on the replaced transmission, i had 75000 miles on it..so i went to a local shop and now 1 year later i was driving home from visiting my son at the university of iowa and my van was jerking whenever it was shifting into a different gear...again a great hazard on the road when you are in traffic with cars going 60-90 miles per hour...this is a great defect on hondas part with their transmissions...i only have 83000. on this van and it is due for a 4th transmission, doesn't that sound un real. i also have my van is working order and to the mechanic often. *tr

The van engine turned off while driving on the freeway at 70mph while my family and i were on the third lane. i almost got in an accident trying to get to the right shoulder. van speed was down to 40mph while making rights to get the right shoulder. the van started immediately, and we went on our way. after exiting the free way the engine again stopped but this time we were in the middle of the intersection. the lights turned red and i was blocking on coming traffic and the person behind me was honking his horn. i put the van in park and restarted the it and continued through the red light. mean while my wife noticed smoke coming out of the steering wheel. when i got home that evening i removed the cover and ignition switch was overheating and killing the engine ( solder joints on the wires were melting). i looked up this problem on the internet and it conformed the switch problem also the van was recalled for that reason. i call honda and i was told that this recall was done on this van. the engine stopped multiple times while driving till i got the part replaced. the issue here is that the recall did not work, and the replaced parts have the same problem as the original recall ( overheating switch) . i have replaced the switch. but the design is still bad and that will help only temporary. stopping the van in the middle of the free way of the intersection comes with heavy risks. *tr

Every winter since we purchased our 1999 odyssey brand new, the power sliding doors would freeze and lock up. it will not work. since our odyssey is out of manufacturer's warranty, the cost to repair is very expensive - a dealer estimated $2000 just to fix one door. so we decided not to fix the sliding power doors and just open them manually instead. even in manual mode, they still freeze during winter. the dangerous part is that they open by itself even when the vehicle is in motion. i respectfully submit that this may be a serial defect. *tr

Our first coil spring broke at 46,751 miles yr 2002 rt side. the second one broke 97653 miles lf side 2005 luckily my wife and son were stopped at a traffic light when the left side of the van fell down resulting in a tire and sway bars wheel sensor damage. the third coil spring broke 123,000 miles rt side. we are very fortunate that we were stopped or the dealer found the broken spring. i have the current coil spring and the only difference between the two are one has a coating on it the other is painted. same size dia metal. these failure rate is evidence there is a problem with the coil springs and a growing trend. this is a safety issue!!! *tr

Problem with power sliding door. on our 1999 ex odyssey, the passenger side power sliding door closes but not quite all the way, it will not "engage", or "catch". therefore, the van thinks the door is still open (open door light is on, buzzes continually when put into gear, and interior lights stay on). because this problem my son got hurt because the door didn't stop when he was getting into the van so the door trapped his arm. the dealer says there is no recall so i have to pay almost $1,000 canadian to get it fix. the honda dealer doesn't care about this issue so i would like to file this problem in court if it is possible. *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 honda odyssey ex. while driving 35 mph on a clear day the contact smelled something burning and noticed smoke rising from the steering column. he stated that the instrument panel shut off and the lights dimmed. also , the vehicle began to thrust, jerk, and finally shut off. the contact attempted to restart the vehicle, but was unsuccessful. he stated that the engine sounded as if the battery was losing power. the vehicle was towed to his residence and was able to restart a few days later. the contact discovered recalls 00v0300 concerning electrical system:wiring:front underhood, and 03v423000 concerning electrical system :ignition :switch, and called the manufacturer. the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was included in the abovementioned recalls. however, the first recall repair was performed in april 2001, and the second repair was performed on october 8, 2002. the contact informed the manufacturer that the vehicle had the same stalling failure noted in the recall. the manufacturer stated that the repair was completed by them. the contact filed a complaint with the manufacturer and was issued case number n012007-04-26-00304. in addition, the passenger's side sliding door failed, and could only be unlocked manually. the current mileage is 119,000, and failure mileage was 117,000.*ak

I own a pre-owned 1999 odyssey ex. we have recently had several things go out on it. it currently has no dash lights and the driversÂ?? side sliding door will not open or close. i had the electrical portion of the ignition switch replaced on 3/28/2007 because of a recall. after this was done, the dash lights quit working, which leads me to believe the two are related. maybe inadvertently a wire to the dash lights was loosened when replacing the electrical portion of the ignition switch. when i contacted the dealer, i was told i would have to pay for a diagnosis to see if this was the problem. i was told the instrument lighting panel had been replaced before i owned the vehicle. it appears that either the wiring was loosened in the process of repairing the ignition switch or the recalled instrument light panel has gone out again. i believe the dealer should be able to diagnosis this without charging me, because of the situation. the two times i have called the customer service 800 number, the persons who have helped me have been very rude and unaccommodating. *jb i am very surprised at the poor level of customer service i have received from the dealer and the 800-customer service line. i associate honda with quality and superiority in all aspects of their business, but i cannot say that anymore. i would automatically buy a honda as a new vehicle when i would need one, but since this experience, i would definitely consider other carmakers. in reference to the sliding door latch assembly recall, my odyssey does not fall under the vin #, but it does fall under the year, 1999. i think it is highly likely my 1999 odyssey has the same problem as the other 1999 odysseys that do have qualifying vin's for the sliding door latch assembly problem. i am very disappointed in the whole process of the handling of my vehicles issues. *jb

Driver-side sliding rear door does not latch properly. it appears to latch, so we start to drive, then the car's buzzer goes off, signaling the door is ajar. i have to switch off the door button on the dash to stop the buzzer. we are concerned that the door may not be safely latched. we have two young children... we have tried to re-set the car by disconnecting the battery, and disconnecting the fuse, but it did not solve the problem. honda does not currently have a safety bulletin out. *jb

My wife was driving the 1999 honda odyssey ex home on the freeway. we were going home after having dinner. and the check engine light went on,we heard a noise and soon after all the dash lights went on followed by stiff steering wheel, and then the honda completely shut off. we were able to coast to the side off ramp off the freeway. we tried to restart but the honda would not restart.i had the honda odyssey towed to my regular mechanic.he looked at the odyssey and informed me that my engine was shot.the honda has not been driven ever since,it is parked and non operational.i do have a honda invoice that states that they performed safety recall (ignition switch) repair on my honda odyssey invoice date of 8/30/2002.*ak

I have a 1999 honda odyssey, 147,000 miles. on saturday, march 3, 2007 at approximately 11:30 am, i was driving and heard a loud noise beneath my vehicle. i then heard a piece of metal sliding down the roadway behind me. after pulling over and noticing that my front right tire had been punctured and going flat, i retrieved the large piece of coiled metal from the roadway. my first thought was a broken coil spring, but it appeared that the springs were ok. i replaced the tire and proceeded slowly believing that i had probably run over the broken spring which had been left in the roadway by another vehicle. approximately 10 miles down the road i heard the same sound, and another piece of metal sliding down the road. i retrieved that piece of metal and compared it with the first, and it is a near duplicate match, including the location of the break. upon further inspection, i noticed that my van had broken both the left and right side front coil springs, nearly identically, but it was difficult to tell because they appeared to still be seated properly in the coil housing closest to the tire. it appears that the broken coil springs are rusted through the black manufacturers paint at the location of the fracture. i had two of my children with me at the times of the breaks. i estimate my speed at 50 mph on the first break, on the two lane roadway, and the roadway was level, clear and dry. the second break occurred probably within 10 miles of the first and i estimate my speed at approximately 30 mph. i was operating on a two lane roadway, and the roadway was level, clear and dry. it should be noted that a time between the two breaks, after cresting a hill on a two lane roadway, i heard a metal scraping noise beneath the vehicle, and immediately pulled over and checked under the vehicle and walked the roadway behind the vehicle, but was unable to locate what caused the sound. after pulling away, the sound was gone. *jb

1999 odyssey with transmission problems. **cc the consumer has been having ongoing problem with the transmission for over three years. the vehicle would roll while on hills, was sluggish and would not shift properly. everytime the vehicle was taken to be repaired the consumer was assured that nothing was wrong. the transmission was finally changed but the problems continued. *nm

On many occasions my power sliding doors failed to operate correctly frequently not latching at all (leaving the door essentially "open") this problem has been ongoing since i purchased the vehicle. *jb

I have had problems over and over with the sliding power doors on my 99 honda odyssey. this is a hazard. there are times i cannot shut the door and have to continue driving with the door ajar, and i have children in the back. there are times when the door won't open, if there was a fire or accident we would be stuck inside the vehicle until we could climb out somehow. this is ridiculous, i know many people who have the same issue and honda does nothing. *nm

1999 honda odyssey's sliding door will not open and close properly. therefore in order to drive without inside lights flashing on and off and buzzer sounding continuously, we have to turn off automatic doors, creating a safety hazard for back seat passengers that might need to exit the van in an emergency and are unable to with the doors turned off. *jb

In august 2003 i received a warranty extension from honda concerning the automatic transmission. at the time i had 70k miles and sporadic instances of transmission slippage. now at 120k i am experiencing all of the signs of transmission failure to include: slippage while driving 35-40 mph and severe lurching when downshifting to 1st at a stop. the dealer i have been using said i would have to buy a new transmission and told me to call the honda customer care number to see if they would provide some financial assistance. that was a joke! the woman said that since my miles were over the magical number of 100k miles they were unable to do anything for me. apparently i have been very lucky to have lasted this long with the original transmission. i recently received a letter that a class action lawsuit is being filed against honda because of the transmission failures, however you have to have less than 100k miles as of august 2006 to qualify for the suit. i have never had a transmission failure on any of my vehicles, some driven over 200k, i am confident this is not related to anything i have done, as there is substantial documentation by the hundreds of odyssey owners going through transmission failures. because of my recommendation two of my family members bought odysseys, a 2000 and a 2001, now i worry about their safety as well as my own. honda should not have to be sued to make this right. make them take responsibility for this. as their credibility is strained i will have to buy another make to replace the odyssey. *nm

I'm filing this complaint to report three ongoing problems and one new problem, all related to the rear sliding door latches, locks and handles: 1. the door latch on the rear passenger-side sliding door of our 1999 honda odyssey lx becomes loose while the vehicle is in motion, causing the interior lights and rear door-open indicator to flash on intermittently. 2. the rear sliding doors often are extremely difficult to open from the outside. the van has been serviced for these two problems at no cost on three separate occasions by a local honda dealership (trickett honda). 3. sometimes the locks on the sliding doors don't engage when the automatic lock button is pushed. 4. the outside door handle on the rear passenger-side sliding door does not retract back into the indented slot and no longer opens the door. *nm

My wife was driving a 1999 honda odyssey van and crossed over a 2 track railroad crossing. the air shield underneath the front of the van came down and hit one of the tracks. this caused the air bags to deploy. my mechanic was concerned that this would cause the air bags to deploy. *jb

I was traveling from indianapolis to columbus, in on i-65 in a 1999 honda odyssey about 6:00 pm on 9/23/2006. after traveling approximately 15 minutes on i-65 (south) i noticed a smell like hot insulation and several minutes late saw smoke rising from the steering column cover. smoking continued as i proceeded toward an exit. i felt the top steering column cover and it felt warm over the left top side as the smoke continued. after approximately 10 min, the engine stalled and all of the instrument cluster gauges stopped working. i coasted to a stop along the side of i-65 and the smoke dissipated. the engine would not re-start. the vehicle has not been repaired but i suspect that the ignition switch overheated and failed. the ignition switch had been recalled and replaced in 2002 as part of nhtsa recall. *jb

We bought a 1999 honda odyssey from carmax and the first week that we got the car the check engine light came on and we took it to carmax. according to them they fixed the problem and everything was fine the engine light went off. then when it came back on for the same problem they apparently fixed it again. this happened a few times. now we didn't have warranty and our van was acting up. the transmission would give a jerk when going from 1st to 2nd gear. the egr ports were clogged and the catalytic converter was messed up from day 1. we took it to our honda dealership and they said it wasn't the transmission, but it was. about a 4 months later it got really bad and we had to get our transmission rebuilt, the ignition switch problem started also (the car engine would stall randomly and it we would have to stop the car on the shoulder of the freeway and restart the car going at 60 mph+), now we spent 2500 bucks to get everything fixed. but now our electrical system is bad. the in dash lights don't work and the back lights don't work. the doors just died for some reason. one second the handles would work and the next second the handles are dead from inside. our alarm system doesn't work either because of the electric problem. all we want is our car to be fixed. we've been lied to by carmax and the honda dealership over and over. can you guys just help us fix our car? *nm

Transmission failure preceded by warning lights, improper shifting, failure to properly diagnose problem until after warranty period expiration

Transmission failure at 100k miles. gradually got worse and worse, until recently (137k miles) the shuddering was so bad, we had to finally bite the bullet and get the transmission replaced by honda for a whopping $3700 ($300 of that is 2 broken engine mounts). for a $32,000 vehicle, the transmission should last a minimum of 150k miles. i take meticulous care of my vehicles--imagine if i had neglected it! honda should seriously consider extending all 2nd generation odyssey transmission warranties out to 150k. *jb

My 1999 honda odyssey broke down when the transmission failed. it was towed to a honda dealer, who told us there was a "warranty extension". i checked online and apparently many people have had this problem. i seems like by calling it a warranty extension they know it is a problem but they refuse to recall it and fix it proactively, instead waiting for you to break down, risk an accident and then covering the cost. *nm

I own a 1999 hoonda odyssey - rear sliding door latches were replaced under a nhtsa recall in 2000 (campaign 99v158000). the latches and slide rails on both doors have failed again. i am being told by local honda dealer that since the latches were repaired once, we are no longer eligible for repairs under original recall - is this true? *nm

On several occasions within the same week as i would drive my vehicle, without notice the vehicle would shut off. this event would occur at times when i traveled on the highway at speeds between 50- 60 mph or on the city roads when i would travel between 25- 30 mph. i called leith honda to schedule a diagnosis and i explained that i believed the problem was covered by a recall issued by honda corp. i was told that if it was covered the repairs would be completed at no cost and my diagnosis fee would be refunded. i had the vehicle diagnosed and repaired on 4-28-06. the repair order states diagnose and replaced electrical portion of the ignition switch. i was told that it was not covered by the recall. the recall report on the honda corp. website states "honda motor co., ltd., has determined that a defect relating to motor vehicle safety exists in the ignition switch on certain 97-00 honda automobiles. electrical contacts in the ignition switch can wear prematurely due to the high electrical current passing through the switch. worn out ignition contacts could cause the engine to stall without warning." this describes my exact problem with my vehicle. i contacted the service manager on 5-2-06 and told him that repairs i had on 4-28-06 should have been covered by the recall. he told me that according to the paper work he could not tell that the problem with my vehicle was the same problem described in the recall. the service manager also told me that this recall was completed by mahwah honda on 5-17-02. i contacted the service department at mahwah honda and there is no record of that repair. (the advisor at mahwah honda faxed me a list of repairs for this vehicle). i was then told by the service manager at leith honda that since the recall was showing as completed in 2002 they would not pay for it to be fixed a second time. i have since contacted american honda co., ltd to further pursue this matter. *nm

My honda odyssey was purchased on apr. 1999. on 5/7/2004, i had to replace the alternator at nardy honda as the vehicle won't charge. on 8/2/04, the car broke down and later found out the alternator bracket broke (sheared in half). honda customer service later paid for the replacement of the bracket. on 8/27/05, the bracket broke again in high way. honda again paid for the repair at another dealership (lundgren in ma since we were traveling outside ny). i complained both time and this time questioned if the design or part is at fault. honda told me there is a service bulletin about the torque of the screws for this bracket so i asked it to be double checked. the car was then checked at nardy honda in oct. 05 (paid for by honda customer service again). on 2/4/06, the car broke down again and this time it is the bolt that holds the alternator to the bracket. i have the broken bolt and bracket from the 2nd time. i have called honda service again and questioned the design, part, and or service procedure to be at fault since i believe the assembly seems to fail instantly under high stresses caused by either the tension of the belt engagement or constant tension. the bolt was sheared off as well. both failures indicate high stresses. honda customer service told me there is nothing they can or will do for me this time. now, i am really worried that the car can break down any time and can cause serious accidents if the driver other than me (my wife or my son) does not know how to handle the sudden break down. i also now question if the initial repair was not caused by bad alternator but was the fact that the bracket was also broken so the alternator won't charge as the belt was stuck. *nm

The sliding doors on both sides of my 1999 honda odyssey lx minivan are sealed shut and will not slide open after a car wash, rain, or in freezing weather. it can only be opened when the sliding doors are dry again or defrosted . i feel this can lead to a dangerous situation if rear passengers are unable to open the sliding doors to leave the minivan in any emergency situation. *nm

1999 honda odyssey. when we were in our dealership for a state inspection the mechanic notice our front coil spring broken,when questioned this was one in a million , they said it was the only one in our area that had this problem. when i asked to have the other coil spring replaced as a safety concern they told me it was not necessary due to they have only seen one in there dealership with this problem i was always told that if you replace one tire or shock or strut you should do it in pairs! lucky for us we had a ext coverage (mileage 46751) the second time was at (97653) lucky for my wife the van was at a light and the tire went flat. at the dealer the mechanic found the right coil spring broken with a flat tire and a list of bent and broken parts a total of $617.00 out of our pocket. coil springs should never brake , this is a safety concern.

This is in concern to a 1999 honda odssyey minivan. honda has voluntarily issued an extended warranty for a transmission defect problem for 7yrs/100k miles. i took my minivan in around 95k to have them check on it as i already noticed some minor symptoms as described in the warranty extension. the dealer could not duplicate the problem at that time and declined to fixed any transmission parts. my transmission continued to degrade very slowly over the next 20k miles and the dealer now told me that the diagnostic code returned an internal transmission failure at 120k. i believed that the transmission built at that time needs to be recalled as the dealer now said it has deterioated to such a state that it may become inoperable while driving. *nm

Driver power seat base broke making the seat unstable and unsafe. the vehicle is undrivable. if there was an accident, the seat belt would keep me from going forward, but then the seat would jolt back and most likely flip me backwards into the seat behind me or my child if he were in the seat! *jb

My wife was driving our 1999 honda odyssey a couple weeks ago and the horn began to honk continuously. she immediately pulled over as the interior began to fill up with acrid, dark smoke rising from beneath the steering column by her legs. she was very concerned and quickly attempted to exit the van since the amount of smoke was burning her eyes. the door locks did not work. after struggling in panic, she was finally able to squeeze out the open window. luckily my 3 young children were not in the vehicle. with engine still running and the key in hand, she called me at work. i had her call the fire department . when they arrived, they too were unable to stop the engine by cutting the battery wire and finally stopped the burning of the wires by pulling the master fuse. i contacted our honda dealer and they referred me to honda america. honda america authorized our shop to do an initial tear down. at that time, they found a component in the steering column that shorted which caused the burning of the wires. the wires burned completely from the fuse board and into a wire harness bundle. no fuse was burned. i do not know yet how far the damage progressed or what other electrical components are fried by this running short. after a week of deliberation, honda informed me this morning that it was a wear out of a part and of no further concern to them since the vehicle warranty expired. being trapped in the vehicle with wires burning, the occupant experienced severe sickness a couple of days following the incident and her lungs hurt for a couple of weeks. the vehicle sits idle at the shop where we towed it. i don't want to authorize repair the vehicle until the nhtsa determines if an investigation is warranted to ensure the safety of the public. there are no after market additions. all major, maintenance events were performed by our local honda dealer for as long as the vehicle has been in our possession. *nm

Honda does not include my van based on the vin number to recall id number 00v183000. instrument lights not working, which poses a hazard during night driving. recall only on specific model. *jb

Beginning in 2000, when the car was less than one year old, we have experienced major equipment failures. first, the egr valve malfunctioned; it was eventually repaired at honda's expense. next, one of the motors for the side power doors failed. that cost approximately $800 to repair. then, the transmission failed, and honda eventually covered the full costs under an extended warranty. for at least four years, we were plagued with an erratic "check engine" light, and sometimes the computer code was inadequate to direct a repair. in 2003 the radiator rotted out, and the replacement/repair cost us $800. in 2004 the catalytic convertor failed, and that replacement/repair cost us $1400. on july 22, 2005, the rear a/c vents failed to cool, and i called for an appointment at our local dealer to have that checked and repaired. the repair was scheduled for july 25, 2005. when i was driving the car on july 23 with the a/c turned on (the front vents continued to cool), the engine died while i was driving at a speed of 45 mph on a local highway. i managed to pull off into a nearby parking lot, and i was able to restart the car after turning off the a/c. it is now at the dealer's shop, and the labor costs alone to determine the cause of the a/c failure will cost more than $350. after inspecting the system for more than three hours july 25, the dealer's mechanic still could not locate the source of the problem. needless to say, i hate this car! i have had many more problems than i ever expected, and the responses from american honda and from the local dealer have been disappointing. neither establishment knows how to relate successfully to customers. this car has been a real lemon, and i am struggling with my decision about what to buy to replace it. although honda has a good reputation, i have not found this car to be reliable. in fact, it is a major source of stress in my life, causing me to gnash my teeth when i am driving it, for i have no confidence in it at all.

Dt: consumer states she received a recall letter; the engine light came on in may. . so she took it a dealer; they had done a transmission fluid check before this. 3 weeks later on may 16, the engine light came one and they ( the dealership) told her there was a recall on the vehicle and they would order the parts. it would be ready by 6-24-04. on the 24th, they called and said they had broken an axle and would have to order the parts overnight and it would be ready on 6-25 at 2pm. she called at 1:30 and they said they hadn't received the parts yet. at 3:40 she called again and they said it was ready. they drove to get the car. after that the maintenance light came on. when they turned the car off it would not turn back on again. her husband checked the car and all of the transmission fluid was leaking out. they called the dealership and talked to randy; he gave them a rental to go back home. they (the dealership) drove to her home (an hour away) on monday 6-27 and dropped off her car and got their rental. they told her the srs light was on because the battery was weak. they replaced the battery. the srs light was still on; they called the dealership and made an appt. to bring the car back. they are upset because the srs light was not on before. the clock on the car will not turn on. the automatic lock system will not work. the alarm system doesn't work. consumer did not have a recall number. *nm

Consumer experienced problems with the sliding door on his 1999 honda odyssey. *nm within 5 months of owning the vehicle the door would open while driving. the door latch assembly was replaced under recall. 5 months later, the door would not shut and the buzzer continued to stay on. the dealer only lubed the track and cleaned the contacts. after another 5 months, the door would not close properly, the dealer then replaced the power door latch for the second time on the drivers sliding door and the replacement last for 2 years. on sept 30, 2002 the door would not close and the dealer replaced passenger latch and closer motor which was the second time for the passenger door latch. the same problem happened again in dec 2004, but on the drivers side and on may 26, 2005 for the sixth time. *jb *nm

I was traveling down highway 1999 into crescent city, ca on a winding mountain road downhill in 1999 honda odyssey van pulling a small camping trailer. the vehicle had 102,606 miles on the van - just short of the 105,000 maintenance period when the spark plugs would be replaced. a spark plug had come loose and starting pinging up against the ignition coil. this caused the ignition coil to fail and blew the ig coil fuse causing the engine to completing stop. the engine check light did not come on until the engine failed. i was about 20 miles ouside crescent city where i was towed into crescent city. the van was serviced by ken's automotive repair, 1250 6th street, crescent city, ca 95531, (707) 464-4955. there was no honda dealer in town and getting parts was difficult. a new ignition coil was to be delivered to the honda dealer in eureka, ca on friday june 10. ken's replaced the fuse and detached the burned-out coil and i was going to make my way to redwood national park to camp on 5 cylinders on then on to eureka on june 10 to have the honda dealer fix the van. however, just outside of crescent city the spark plug was blown right out of the cylinder take the remaining part of the ignition coil with it. the threads for the spark plug were completed stripped out. i hobbled back to ken's. ken had to install a thread replacement while i rented a car to get the new ignition coil from the honda dealer. the honda dealer could not re-route the part (they claimed) and could not get the part to ken's until saturday june 11. ken's successfully rethreaded for a new spark plug, evacuated a piece of the old spark plug or coil that fell into the cylinder, put on the new coil and got me back on the road. ken's reprted to me that 2 other spark plugs were loose. the maintenance period for replacement of spark plugs of 105,000 mile is too long. i could have had a serious accident with fatal consequences for my family.

I own a 1999 honda odyssey ex. it currently has 109,000 miles on it. in 2003, the transmission was replaced by honda corp. due to default in the transmission. this apparently 'used' transmission' was additionally guaranteed for 3yr/30k miles. engine light comes on, and repairing honda dealer reports transmission requires replacement.

Michelin tire x-radial dt, p215/65r16. the front right tire has a 2 inch tear in the sidewall of the tire which could lead to a possible blowout. owner contacted the manufacturer, and was told to have the tire inspected. *ak

This vehicle experienced the same problem that was stated in nhtsa recall campaign 03v423000 concerning ignition switch. the key was able to go to the off position without vehicle being in park. however, this vehicle was not included in the recall due to vin. *ak vehicle owner spoke with american honda on 03/08/2005 and explained the situation. american honda confirmed that this vehicle was not covered by the recall, and stated that the owner could bring the car to the dealer for inspection on this issue. depending on the report of the dealer to honda, honda might be willing as a good-will geature to fix the problem at no charge. *bf *nm

The drive side passenger door will latch intermittently, when placing the vehicle into drive a buzzer lets the driver know the doors were not closed. other times the door will not close. the vehicle was serviced multiple times with no repair. the consumer vehicle was not included in the recall for the sliding door, nhtsa 99v158000 or 00v119000. *jb

The second row passenger side seat belt failed to retract and was replaced a few months after purchase. the seat belt was replaced under warranty. the seat belts looked and felt loose. *sc *jb

Vehicle drove normally in the morning then in the afternoon made a huge grinding, banging noise in reverse. transmission failure identified by the dealer. this is 2nd failure of transmission since we purchased the vehicle new from honda. transmission was replaced at honda's cost just 18 months ago. clearly refurbished transmissions are just as defective as the originals. in fact this one didn't last as long as the original. the transmission is a lemon!!*ak

Vehicle started when ignition turned on, but gear would not shift. after many failed attempts to shift the gear from park to reverse, we had to follow the honda odyssey user manual directions( pg 201) and unlock the gear to neutral using the car key- you then insert the key in the ignition and turn the van on.*ak

Both manual rear sliding doors have been difficult to open since original purchase in 1999. dealer greased both doors every time the car was serviced, but problem continued. the latches on both doors have broken and now the doors must be opened from the inside. this posses a potential safety hazard if the doors need to be opened from the outside in an emergency. sliding rear manual door on the passenger side would indicate on the dash to be open. this would happen when cornering or hitting bumps. overhead light would turn on and off and crackling sound from below steering would be heard. *jb

While driving vehicle leaked transmission fluid. vehicle was stuck between gears. engine was smoking and burning fluid. transmission then completely failed. consumer stated that this was the fifth transmission. *ak

I bought my 1999 odyesse in march of 2004. i took my van to the honda dealership to find out why my driver's side sliding door was not closing completly. they told me that the latches and hinges needed to be replaced totalling $420. they checked my warranty and those parts were not covered. i told them i didn't have $420, to repair the door. one week later the other sliding door stopped closing all the way. i looked up the 1999 odyesse to find out if there were any recalls for this and there are plenty, but when i spoke with america honda they said that my vin number had no recalls. then i spoke with the honda dealership in town and they told me that the only recall for my vin was for the transmission. so, i believe there is a lot being covered up. i have four small children that are ride in this van everyday and from what i have read on this web-site my children are not safe with doors that can just come open when the vehicle is in motion.

Transmission is slipping. dealership says transmission needs to be replaced, but since the car is 6k miles over warranty limit, i have to foot the $5000 bill for a new transmission that based on information gleemed from the web still has the same basic flaw...

I purchased a 1999 honda odyssey in aug 1999. first account was in mar 2000. by nov 2000, vehicle was seen 3 times for the check engine light. five years later, this vehicle has been serviced 12 times (working on number 13 now) for the check engine light. egr kit has been replaced 5 times, remaining visits accounted for my cleaning egr ports, replacing the egr valve, and replacing the gas cap. i've had other vehicles for 7+ years and never replaced a gas cap! this vehicle has gone through 2? check engine light is tied to the emissions system. as a result, vehicle is now having problems passing inspection. during the last visit, local dealer replaced the egr kit in order to get the 05 inspection completed. two weeks later the check engine light is on again. in addition, internal damage was found in the transmission in aug 03. dealer agreed to take care of this problem in good faith. this was prior to the official recall notice. at the time of service the mileage was clocked at 81823. less than 1 year later (june 2004), it was discovered by an independent garage that the left axle seal going into the transmission was cracked and the transmission fluid was extremely gritty. when brought to the attention of the dealer, i was informed that the vehicle was out of warranty on the new transmission and i would have to pay for any service required (mileage was clocked at 102000). as a single mother of 3 young children, my main objective is to be able to transport them in a safe, reliable manner. given the extent of my emission and transmission issues that remain unresolved, i cannot depend on this vehicle. this situation was first documented to honda in nov 2000. at that time they extended the warranty to 6 years/75,000 miles. another letter was sent certified mail (signed for on 6 aug 2004). i've yet to hear back from honda. i'm very disappointed with this honda product and even more disappointed with their (lack of) customer service.*jb

Well, of course, wouldn't you know...on friday, june 11, 2004 at 5:00 pm and approximately one month later (from 05/10/04), my check engine light came on for the fifth time since 10/06/03. dale at the dealership told me to call if it came on again and bring it in asap. the earliest the dealer could see me is wednesday, june 16, 2004. my mileage is currently 99,383. honda has extended their tranmission warranty for 7 years or 100,000 miles. looks like 100,000 miles will be here before i know it. my husband and i are sharing a vehicle because i refuse to put anymore miles on this car. can't something be done? it seems this transmission problem is wide spread.*ak

It's been four months since my last check engine light came on. on 05/10/04, my check engine light came on again. this is the forth time since 10/06/03. i took it back to the dealer and the service person, dale, told me it could be numerous things (e-val, transmission, computer or shift solenoids). wow! did someone say transmission? but he told me that in order for them to be completely sure, i would have to leave my car for approximately 5 hours to run the "thorough" test and they would charge me approximately $70. so, when they replaced my catalytic converter four months ago (and didn't do the 5 hour test), were they completely sure it was the catalytic converter? upset about this new discovery, i told them i just spent over $800 four months ago on something that they "thought" was wrong and now they are going to charge me to look at the same problem again. dale later came back to me and said that they would reset the light today and if it happened again to come back right away and they would be able to "narrow it down." *ak

Well, the check engine light did come back on less than one month later. this is the third time in three months. on 01/07/04, they checked the car again and said that it was the converter and that while they were in there i should also replace the o2 sensor. i agreed to it and my estimate (for parts) was now $742.83. after ten days, i called the dealer to see if the parts were in and they were, but no one bothered to call me. on 1/21/04 with check engine light still on and at 88,846 miles, my converter and sensor were replaced for a total of $857.81.*ak

On 12/17/03, i brought my vehicle back to the honda dealer because my check engine light came on again. this is the second time in 2 months that the check engine light has come on. i told them that i am still feeling some hard slippage on downshifts. with approximately 82,500 miles on my car, the technicians believed it was the catalytic converter. the estimate was $701.90. they said they would have to order the part and i would have to prepay. i was uneasy about this (and not to mention the amount of money), so they reset the indicator and said that "it wouldn't do any damage to the car if i didn't fix it now. all that would happen would be that the light would continue to come on. *ak

On 10/16/03, i brought my vehicle back to the local honda dealer because my vehicle would go dead while driving. this was approximately ten days after i had brought my vehicle to the dealer because the "check engine was on" due to "catalytic efficiency below threshold. intermittent code". and the dealer reset the light. it was determined this time by my honda dealer that the cause was a faulty ignition switch. this was covered under the recall (02-031). *ak

My check engine light came on with the tcs light one year after having my entire steering rack replaced. on 10/06/03 (and 81,372 miles), i took my vehicle to the local honda dealer. i told the technician that again i felt my car driving rough and sluggish on accelerations. they asked me what kind of gas i was using.(?) found code p0420 "catalytic efficiency below threshold. intermittent code". the dealer reset the light.*ak

In may of 2002, i purchased a used 1999 honda odyssey from a reputable honda dealer in conway, ar. at the time of purchase, the car had 48,680 miles. the car was in excellent shape. approximately five months later, i noticed two things: my gears were slipping and my power steering fluid getting very low. on 10/29/02 (and 57,163 miles), i brought the vehicle to the honda dealer where i reside in monroe, la. it was determined from the technician that my power steering rack was leaking and that i had to replace my entire steering rack. thank goodness for the extended warranty! rack was replaced. *ak

We are experiencing a problem with our transmission that is setting our engine code off. i believe the code is a po740. this problem said to be very common in these vans

Side sliding door handle broke off when opening door. pin that sheared off and that door pivots on appears to be made of plastic. these doors normally are powered open. due to problem with switch door would only open manually. when opening manually these doors take considerably more force to open than a normal sliding door. with my little experience opening manually i apparently pulled too hard! this seems to me to be a flaw in the design of the handle.

Transmission would buck and slip in 3rd & 4th gears. would drive only if placed in 1st & 2nd gears. required new cluches, solenoids, and converter. went to independent transmission repair. honda wanted $5,400 to replace with rebuilt.

I have a 1999 honda odyssey, [xxx], that i bought used in 2002. it is a honda certified car. since i have had the car the driver side rear sliding door has malfunctioned in spite of being serviced about 4 times. the warning light comes on and the alarm goes off. i have to put the car in park, open the door and close it again and then it's ok. the most recent time it was serviced, the cost was $600 and supposedly all of the door sensors on the frame and the door were replaced. that was about 1 month ago. since then the alarm sounds less often however, the alarm has gone off while i'm driving the car, the door has failed to close and i had to put the car in park, get out and push the door as it was closing and several times when i tried to lock the car with the remote, i had to walk back to the car, open and close the door because the alarm indicator showed the door ajar. i understand this has been a problem with the odyssey. last night i was a news story that vehicles involved in accidents are sometimes auctioned and move from dealer to dealer and the paper history of the car is changed. it's possible that a car that has been in a serious accident has ended up on a new car dealers lot and was sold as certified. this is a serious problem as i often have my grandchildren in my car in car seats. if it is fixable, it should not take this much effort to fix. since it has taken try after try and i still have a malfunctioning door i can only think that maybe the frame of the car is damaged. please help me out with this situation. thank you. *la *js information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

At 5 years and 64,000k our 1999 honda odyssey has had to have its transmission remanufactured. it seems a bit early to be having transmission issues given the amount of mileage it has. our concern is that the extended warranty only goes to 7 years and 100,000k. we kept our last honda for 14 years and 160,000k. do we have any recourse if we have transmission problems after 7 years? *jb

Due to the well documented problem with honda odyssey sliding doors being difficult to open (see honda odyssey tsb 91, 10/29/02), my door handle broke in the process of attempting to open it. internet research shows a high number of odyssey owners have also experienced this problem with handle breakage due to the sticking door problem. the component that breaks is a small, understrength plastic component inside the handle. because of a broken door handle, during an emergency--and at other times--it could be impossible to open the door and free back occupants, especially if the internal child safety lock is also engaged, blocking attempts to open the door from the inside as well. *jb

When driving in snow-when trying to brake a loud grinding noise of the brakes is heard -it takes a very long time to stop meanwhile the vehicle is continuing to move for unsafe distances. brake pedal takes a long time to fully depress. these problems are not encountered in dry conditions. i drove other family members cars on this same day with no problem. there seems to be a problem with the abs system on this vehicle. i am afraid to drive this vehicle in the winter. these brakes are dangerous. i bought this car as a honda certified used vehicle and replaced the tires after the first episode at the end of last winter-now with the first snowfall this year-same problem.*ak

Problems with transmission slippage on a 1999 honda odyssey. *mr the problem was found during a major performance of service where the dealer found that the transmission fluid was burned. there was intermittent slippage, which eventually became worse, even after the part was replaced. *scc also the automatic doors did not work at times. *jb

Problem is not with car seat but seat belt on the honda odyessy 1999. the middle row, passenger side seat belt has failed three times. it losses spring action, and has been replaced three times by the honda dealership in the past 6 months. our four year old sits in the seat with a booster. attending a car seat seminar through the county we live in, they stated that once the belt is fastened it must be fully extended to the locked position. with the first two replacements of the seat belt the dealership told me it was correct to extend and lock the seat belt. upon the last replacement they recommended that we do not extend and lock the seat belt. we feel this is not proper operation for full safety. we also fear for our child's safety if we do extend and lock the belt, due to the three failures. *la

Side door handle broke off while manually opening door. pin that handle pivots on appears to be made of plastic - perhaps not strong enough for this use? sliding door normally would open automatically by means of an electric motor. automatic meachanism had malfunctioned requiring door to be pulled open by manual means. this door opens with much more resistance than a normally sliding door, probably due to the motor being attached. knowing this yet not having much experience opening it this way, i gave the door a good tug. there appears to be a fine line between pulling hard enough to get door opened and breaking handle off! repair cost $185

The front doors on this van do not have adequate "notches," for the door to rest when open. most doors are made in such a way that they can be fully and/or partially open and have the doors rest in a relatively secure state such that the door won't open or close suddenly. this is especially true if the vehicle in on a slight incline where gravity can cause the door to swing open and hit another car (as in a parking lot) or person; or close by itself and hit a passenger who might be entering or exiting. the doors on the 1999 odyssey just seem to sit at whatever position you set them to. there is a slight feel of a notch in the fully opened position, but it's not obvious and certainly not strong enough to counter any force that tries to move it. the problems i face is that my driveway has a slight incline. even the slightest tilt in the vehicle (nose up) will cause the doors to close by itself when let go. i have to constantly make sure that the kids are using the sliding doors (and they have their own set of problems as many other odyssey owners already know) when there's the potential for them to use the front doors to get in and out just to prevent the younger kids from getting hurt. and of course, i have to make sure i don't get caught myself if i step out and turn around to reach for something on the floor (for instance). recently, we had some moderately high winds and the doors blew shut with the car on level ground. i'm not talking hurricanes or even gale force winds; i'm talking the wind blowing harder than normal. these doors are dangerous; they should rest of notches like all other car doors. it shouldn't be hard to verify my claim ! *la

When i exit the driver's seat and step down, my thigh sometimes hits the power seat reclining control and causes the seat to recline. the switch is spring loaded and would normally automatically jump back to the neutral position when released. for some unknown reason, it's possible to nudge it with my thigh at just the right angle that the switch does not return to its center/neutral position. i've tried to reproduce this manually by pushing it in this and that direction and i just can't do it. there seems to be some cause related to body positioning and the right amount of pressure in the right direction. i'm 5'-10", about 180 lb so it's not a case of being over/underweight or above/below height. this problem has happened a number of times. the first few times it happened, i exited the van and returned to find the seat reclined all the way. needless to say, i was confused. i thought the seat support had broken. one time, i exited the vehicle, to check something in the rear of the car and heard my son crying. he was seated in a car seat behind the driver's seat. the driver's seat had reclined and the handlebar behind the driver's seat was pressed firmly against his legs. luckily he was ok; but this incident highlights the potential danger of this defect. something is wrong with the design or manufacture of the switches and/or seat. they should not be so easily activated. the switches are located close to the foam of the driver's seat which compresses easily. the switches should either be relocated further away from the cushion or the switches themselves should redesigned to be more robust. *la

Ignition switch failed, causing vehicle to shut off while driving. a recall was issued; however this vehicle was not included due to vin. *ak

The sliding doors on our 1999 honda odyssey van have been hard to open for the past year or so. recently, i pulled the handle to open the sliding door - it snapped off and it is no longer possible to open the door. with instructions from the service manual, i carefully removed the inside door panel to find a broken lever inside. i have not investigated how much it may cost to repair this but i am highly disappointed in the recent quality of honda products. over the years, we have owned 3 other hondas with only minor repair issues. the odyssey is definitely not up to the usual high quality standards. the convenience of the side door is now totally useless. i understand that the replacement part might cost $300 or more. with this outrageous price, i am willing to spend my own time to locate a used replacement mechanism. the actual broken part is a small plastic lever inside the door handle. from my investigation, this little part is not available separately and will warrant to purchase of the complete door lock mechanism. i have seen similar failure reports from many other honda owners - it's time to let them know how unhappy we are. *la

At 54,700 miles (july 2001) the car made a clunking noise when put into gear. tcs light and check engine light came on. service couldnot reproduce clunking problem. since the transmission was out of warrenty i kept driving making sure to have regular maintenance. it continued to "rev" when starting to move or excellerating quickly. tcs light and check engine light came on again at 100,000 (dec 2002). i questioned them again about the transmission but was told that it was a catalytic converter/ engine control system.( out of stock until february). tcs and check engine lights again in june 2003 at 117,900. code showed a transmission po740.transmission "smelled burned." sept. 2003 tcs and check engine light indicate trainsmission needs replacing. the dealer nor manufacturer had told me that the warrenty had been extended to 100,000. this transmission problem in the odyssey, and other hondas, is so wide spread that i can't believe nothing is being done for the consumer. my cousin in missouri owns a 1999 odyssey and she has had to replace both the trainsmission and catalytic convertor as well. a pretty big coincidence. i could name other parts we have both replaced. could it be that some parts of the odyssey are lemons? calling honda coporoate is a joke. they put you on hold, have a good laugh and then tell you they can't do anything because the car is over the mileage limit. they should be made to do the right thing. an investigation might change this arrogant company.

My 1999 honda odyssey transmission is being replaced at 88,000 miles. the honda dealer was of no help with my problem. the honda web site does not help. it cost me $3,000 to repair.*ak

When shifting in to reverse, transmission would make a loud bang and then start slipping. at the same time it developed a steady whine while in drive. reverse gear totally failed while attempting to turn around on a busy road. consumer had to push the vehicle backwards out the road to clear the curb and sidewalk. afterwards, when reverse was selected, it made a loud sound like a bearing was spinning rapidly on a shaft. consumer seen at least five service bulletins pertaining to his vehicle failure. consumer contacted both canada honda and american honda. american honda stated they couldn't do anything because the vehicle was built in canada, it fell into the gray area. canada honda stated they have a 5yr/100,00 mile warranty on their vehicles. since the vehicle was tagged in another country, the u.s., particularly hawaii there was nothing they could do. consumer questioned how could honda extend the warranty of 2000 and 2001 honda's but not 1999 with the same defect. consumer would like honda to repair or replace the transmission. *ph

Vehicle honda odyssey 1999 with 42,549 mileage encounterred problem with the transmission. the engine light went on and the gears were skipping. the dealer diagnosed the problem as a bad transmission and my warranty on the car has already expired. the dealer contacted honda and honda informed the dealer that i was the first reported transmission problem for the the 1999 odyssey but they agreed that since i was a one time good will to customer, that they will replace the transmission part, however i had to pay $535.19 for the labor cost which i did. as i am now reading about honda extending the manufacturer's warranty on the honda 2001-2 models for the odessey, accord and prelude due to transmission failures, i would like to file a complaint for the honda odyssey 1999 model as well. i believe that honda should have paid for the part and labor. i was told that i was lucky that it only cost me the labor. i have the receipt from the dealer as proof. please let me know how i can reclaim my $539.19. thanks colleen ahad. *ak

When backing vehicle up, transmission will make a bang sound when under normal to heavy acceleration. when parked on an incline, it is very difficult to get the vehicle out of reverse. when you do, it makes a loud bang sound. vehicle will hesitate as you apply moderate acceleration pulling away from a near stopped condition. these conditions were intermitent beginning at about 40,000 miles (3.5 years old) and have worsened as the vehicle has reached 56,000 miles (4.75 years old).

The rear sliding door latch malfunctioned and caused the door to close and pop open. recall 00v119000 repairs were done before this current owner owned the vehicle. the dealer would repair the vehicle at owner's expense. *ak

Power seat will activate itself when driver sits on it, without touching any controls. the seat moves forward pinning the driver into the steering wheel. the seat just activates itself. i am not an overweight person. it only happens when first entering the vehicle and sitting down on the driver's seat. this anomolie happens quite often. *ak

We were in the first day of a 10 day trip in our 1999 honda odyssey. the check engine light and the tcs light came on and then the transmission began slipping. (the van had been in to the dealership for a similar issue with the tcs light and check engine light in may, 2003 and had also been checked out prior to the trip to make sure everything was in good shape). three hours into our trip, the lights come on and we're dealing with an out of town honda dealer. we were unable to get a new transmission done in a timely mannerat the out of town dealership and we needed a van due to a disabled child and no vans were available for rent. therefore, we were left with the only choice we felt we had which was to purchase a new honda odyssey (03) at the dealership. after we get home and research this issue, we feel that honda has been less than fair and honest. we called the 800 number for honda customer care. what a joke! they felt that they owed us nothing, since we no longer owned the 99 honda. they are not even acknowledging that they have a problem with the 99 odyssey in terms of transmission. their very words were "we can't talk about this...there is no problem with the 99 odyssey transmission...it is only your opinion." in addition, now we have this expensive car payment and are wondering what if this transmission fails us on the road? no longer confident that this is a great automobile company! although we were not involved in an accident, we were tremendously inconvenienced, both emotionally and financially. *ak

I have a 1999 honda odyssey minivan. the manual sliding doors stick in wet or snowy weather. sometimes you can get the doors open but it takes severla minutes. manyl times i have been unable to open either sliding door and have had to pull my kids over the front seats to get them out of the vehicle. it is a serious safety hazard when you cannot open the doors to get your children out of the vehicle. this problem is widespread on honda odysseys. my sister has a 2000 odyssey and pulled the entire handle off the door trying to get the door open. honda has 2 service bulletins detailing a fix for replacing the weatherstripping but they won't cover the cost for me because it is out of warranty. i feel this is a serious safety issue and that these doors should be recalled.

Problem with shifting on automatic transmission from 2nd to 3rd gear. engine races and does not want to go into 3rd gear. had transmission repaired, and found that the 2nd gear clutch plates had severe premature wear, and the clutch plates were grooved (not smooth like the 3rd gear clutch plates, and not what was shown in the repair manual). the replacement clutch plates were smooth, as shown in the repair manual. ts

At 73,000 miles my transmission needs to be replaced. many other people have reported this problem. two incidents were cited in the los angeles times of catastrophic failures that could lead to serious accidents. this car is our family vehicle, i am scared of what might happen even if the transmission is replaced. several posts to the internet indicate that people have replaced the transmission up to three times over the life of the vehicle. i understand honda has issued a recall or extended the warranty on the 2000-2001 odysseys but will not being doing anything for the 1999 model. also, the locking actuator on the door of the vehicle has failed repeatedly. the alarm system will arm, but the door is not locked. when the door is then opened the alarm sounds. this has scared my children enough to make them run from the vehicle to the street. this problem appears to corrected now, but it took three tries. nlm

With less than 45,000 miles, transmission fails to engage smoothly when pulling away from a stop. also, does not down-shift smoothly at high rpm. other symptoms are the tcm light and check engine light come on. upon diagnosis, the dealer confirmed a transmission problem. american honda agrees to replace the transmission and will cover the parts, but the dealership wants $700.00 in labor to complete the repair. a 36,000 mile warranty on a transmission is inadequate - i've driven hondas and toyotas 150,000 and more in the past and have never had a transmission failure. with the number of transmission problems reported for this vehicle on this web site, honda should stand behind their reputation and correct this problem long-term. i plan on driving this vehicle to 120,000 miles or more - at this rate, that means 3 transmissions!*ak

Engine suddenly quite while traveling at highway speed . all gauges, dials, etc. went blank and vehicle suffered a loss of electrical power. able to restart each time, either by placing vehicle in "n" or pulling to side of road. vehicle required no more than two attempts to restart.*ak

Both sliding doors latches failed to engage (lock) the door. one of the latches broke (driver side) after reapeted attempts at trying to make it close. on one occasion, the internal latching mechanism broke inside the door and almost poked a hole through the outer door wall. the latches where supposedly changed once during a recall by honda issued july 1999 which the dealer performed. but the latch failed after recall was performed. apparently this problem affects possible only 1999 models (first year production models). as with any redesigned models, honda has some problems it will need to correct. fortunately for me, the dealer has agreed to replace the latches at no cost to me. however, we are still debating on the body work. when the latch/sliding door does not close, the instrument panel's door lamp warns about it and a buzzer sounds. i also had problems with the door seals that come out when i bump them. *ak

Transmission failing. clutch engages late and suddenly: engine revs as gas is applied but clutch doesn't engage, then clutch engages suddenly, causing car to jerk forward hard. this is dangerous--can't pull out into traffic, because i don't know if car will actually go when i step on the gas, and car coasts as transmission tries (but fails) to shift between e.g. 1st and 2nd. please require a recall on this--many people have reported the same problem in auto newsgroups on the internet. this is clearly a manufacturing defect, and a potentially serious safety problem as well.*ak

Manufacturer denies any problems however we have a honda service bulliten that states otherwise sb #00-065 please read it. they are replacing them with remanufactured transmissions but there is no reason to believe that they are free from this same defect. that is why honda has put a totally new transmission design into the 2002.*ak

Engine check light came on at about 72,000 miles. took the car in to leigth honda and they told me to replace the solenoid. i paid $400 and it was replaced . about 1,000 miles later the engine check light came back on. this time took it to auto park honda in cary, nc. it had a torque converter failure code and transmission was replaced with a new transmission. i have had the repaired van back for two weeks and the engine check light has come back on again. we are waiting for auto park's response. i have been rea many, many complaints about the exact same problem at the autofan.com web site.*ak

Though we bought the odyssey used, it only had 10k miles on it by an elderly couple. no towing, no steep hills, no abusive driving. transmission started shifting at wrong times, then we heard loud 'clunk' when putting it in reverse. brought it to dealer and was told we needed to replace the transmission with a used one for $3075 (90 day warranty) or new one for $4700 (50k/50 mth warranty). we transferred car to transmission shop who is rebuilding it for $2100. no mention at dealer of any known problems with odyssey transmissions, but it sounds like there is a consistent defect. have heard many stories of people getting post-warranty replacements from their dealer, after pressuring them to fix the problem.*ak

During a child belt safety check done in my community it was found that the seat belt my 8 1/2 mo . old child was using did not work. the seat belt was loose ,and the reason was that it wasn't retracting. the seat belt was broken. if i had'nt gone to have the seats checked i would never have known that it wasn't working right and my child could have been injured in case of an accident.

Automatic sliding doors stops at 50% of travel. doors (left and right) will not close. doors appear to close but 'door open' alarm is activated. doors stuck in full open position.*ak

1. sliding doors would not open at times. door latch system replaced on both doors.2. sliding door on passenger side would indicate on dash to be open. this would happen when cornering or hitting bumps. overhead light would turn on and off and crackling sound from below steering would be heard (coinciding with lights going on and off). latch system on this door was replaced. 3. air conditioner sound/humming when on. belt tensioner previously replaced after same noise was heard. same problem occurring approximately 15,000 miles after work was performed. due to take in 3/15/01 to inspect once again.

Initally told by dealer that noise was from tail pipe hitting trailer hitch. i am still concerned after reading about the same transmission noise from others. *ak

The sunvisors are so loose that when normal breaking pressure is applied to the car, the visors will move out of position if not locked, blinding the driver. the visors have been replaced once, re-tightened once. two dealerships claim that this is a manufacturing problem. i contacted honda who said that only a dealer could repair the problem. this is a serious hazard, as i've almost wrecked when i was blinded when slowing down because the sun visor moved. *ak

The affinity firestone tires ripped all away around the tread of the tire near the outside wall on the front tires. these hare 80,000 mile tread warranty and these tires were comming apart at 35,000 miles. the tires were properly maintained and were rotated on schedule. these tires should be included in a recall similar to the other currently firestones tires. this issue should not go unnoticed by the nhtsa. we are very luckly that we caught this problem before a failure occured. i have never seen tires come apart like this. please take action quickly. the 1999 honda odyssey is the first year of its new heavier/bigger design. whether this a tire issue or a car issue a safetry concern exist.*ak (tiresize: p215/65r16)( dot number: tire size: p215/65r16 )

This is a 50,000 mile tire that has seperating belts after only 26,000 miles. i first started having problems with these tires around 12,000 miles, but was informed that it was a "balancing" problem. i have spoken with other odyssey owners who also are replacing these tires due to belt problems. On sept. 6, 2000 while driving on i-10 in mississippi my right front tire blew out in the fast lane with my self and two very young children on board. the cause of the blow out is unknow. i have my tires rotated on a regular basis. the tire store has comment that the tire is wearing in an unusaul pattern from the outside in, instead of how they normally wear the inside out. the van is in allignment. honda has been worderful in helping me get the tire replaced. six days after the blow out i got all new tires now kelly springfield due to another blow out scare with my remaing tires and due to the fact they have worn so badly down on the outside of all four tires.( dot number: p215 tire size: 65r16 )

The seat belts on the passenger side and driver side located in the middle row of seats in our minivan both failed, within 4 months of each other. we have small children and use child car seats for them. my wife knows more about car seats than most people who work at the car dealerships, and we use them in the manner they were intended to be used. yet, both seat belts failed. i've never owned a vehicle where a seat belt has failed. two failures regarding the same part (albeit, one is the left side and the other is the right side) is unacceptable, and strongly suggests there is a defect. we had to wait days for the seat belt part to arrive at the honda dealer, thus we were forced to drive a vehicle that was not safe. we simply did not allow our children to use the failed seat belts. the problem is that the retractor somehow gets stuck, and the seat belt is completely inoperative. again, 2 failures of the same part is more than a coincidence. are the seat belts safe in this vehicle? what happens when/if there's a crash. the honda dealers claim there they have not noticed a problem with the seatbelts, but i find that hard to believe. sounds like a coverup.*ak

We consider the car to be a lemon as it has been back to the service station many many times with no resolution. the greatest danger is the inoperable doors and locks that intermitantly engage and disengage. this can be a serious problem with our small children being lock in a car. the dealer has not been able to remedy this issue after several attempts.

New model year in '99. gas tank is plastic. has a "minor" scratch down the length of the tnk, cause unknown. resulted in seepage from the fuel tank. nticec strong odor of gasoline and brought to dealer (not where originally purchased). asvised by dealer tht was due to a road hazard and tank needed to be replaced. i am concerned about the ease with which the tank was damaged and concerned that the next time there might be a fire or fatality. there is not a shield or other preventative mechanism on the roadside, underside of the vehicvle to prevent this from re-occurring and the visible damage is negligible...since is a new model year, i dont want to be the one who makes the nightly news as the first fire fatality.!! the dealer so far has not conceeded that there is a design problem. rather has quoted their engineers as having said that this van has passed all government tests ant there is a shield but is located on the van side not the underside of the tank. frankly this does not make me feel comfortable that it will offer much in the way of protection should this re-occur. again, the damage is barely visible to the eye. a slight scratdh taht is not deep enough to cause a leak, bu rather a seeping of gas. no puncture, dents, bangs etc appear on the tank...help! thanksdheidps thebrrbveuaaha road hasseod

Abs system bangs a lot when engaging but doesn't really assist in stopping the vehicle. my wife had to make a panic stop to avoid hitting someone that cut in front of her in a parking lot. the abs kicked in and made a loud banging noise but the van never stopped and went in to the other car.

At speeds 70 mph and greater, a severe vibration occurs in the steering wheel. the dealer told me it was due to the tires and that i should replace them. at approx 20,000 miles i decided to do so and the vibration went away. i have heard that honda is reimbursing some owners for the expense of new tires in this situation. i am looking for the same from honda.( dot number: )

My car came equipped with firestone tires. on june 14,2000, my right rear tire blew out on the highway. it was over 100 degrees, and the vehicle was traveling at 65 mph. the driver was able to safely maneuver the vehicle off the road. the entire outside wall of the tire was blown out, and the firestone dealer i took the tire to could find no puncture in the tire. the dealer (firestone tire & service in redwood city, 650-364-1900) told me they would send the tire to a lab for analysis. as of last week, they still had not received any word back from the lab. on july 28, the newly installed tire (with less than 1,000 miles on it) blew out under similar high heat-65 mph conditions. again, the driver was able to negotiate off the road safely. i'm very concerned about the coincidence of two firestone tires blowing out under the conditions described. has the ntsb received other compalints about blow-outs from car owners whose cars use the same tire brand (i realize these are not among the recalled tires). i have since replaced all the tires with michelin tires and contacted firestone about compensation and following up on the lab analysis. the second tire also suffered an exterior wall blow-out although it was not as severely damaged as the first. i still have the second blown-out tire and all the remaining firestone tires that came on my vehicle. i believe that other odyssey owners should be made aware of the problems i experienced, and that firestone should examine tires beyond the recalled tires for possible defects.( dot number: tire size: p21565r16 )

Vehicle rolls against transmission, even on minimal slopes (i.e. rolls back in 1st gear, rolls fwd in rvrs gear). transmission fails to hold against rolling. inadequate torque resistance to rolling. this occurs repeatedly in parking lots, driveways, and at stop signs on gentle hills. could easily result in low-speed collision with other vehicle or structure. similar to odi complaints #705175, 712383, 847173.

The left and right sliding doors of my 1999 honda odyssey ex do not rebound when consistant pressure is applied. it takes various levels of pressure to get the doors to rebound while closing. at times , i feel the pressure to rebound these doors are too much for small children and elderly people. i have complained to both honda windward and american honda and have documents that claim that nothing can be done to remedy my complaint. both honda windward and american honda do not consider my doors a problem and say the excessive pressure is normal operation of the odyssey. i feel this is a safety issue that should be looked into by your office. *ak

The automatic sliding doors on the honda odyssey are advertised as having the ability to stop when confronted with an obstacle , but they clearly do not and will easily crush anything that gets in their path. this is a horrible design for any vehicle but unthinkable and unforgivable in a vehicle designed to transport children. *ak

Problems with power driver seat. i set the recline position in the furthest upright position out of personal preference. every time i get in the car i have to incline to seat to its most upright because the seat always has reclined to some degree. the degree the seat reclines varies every day. ocassionally when i exit my vehicle, the seat will automatically recline all the way down when i have not even touched the power seat controls. this has been an ongoing nuisance and my dealer has not been able to resolve this issue. problem is that this problem is hard to duplicate while at the dealer service department.

Please contact me so i may mail or fax the long history of defects on this vehicle. currently i wish to address the unsafe brakes on this vehicle. thank you

Left sliding door not locking, unlocking, or opening properly. dealer tried to fix twice now and still broken. door locks and unlocks itself while in motion. it pops, clicks, and buzzes at random. right sliding door opens while in motion. dealer tried to fix once and still broken. a/c makes tremendous "thunking" noise-clutch engaging improperly. dealer tried to fix twice-told me"could not duplicate" still broken. left & right front windows both had bad parts. left still waiting on parts to be put in. seatbelt in middle, left rear locked so tightly while van in motion that i was trapped. it would not release even while van was not braking, turning, etc. doors are main safety concern and dealer not able to correct problems and zone office #6 unwilling to return my phone calls regarding this important matter.

Srs warning light activated. diagnostics show srs module failure (airbags non-functional) replacement part not available until 12/29/1999. dealer claims problem is widespread.

Vehicle vibrates and steering wheel shake or shimmys at 70 mph and up. dealer and tire manufacturer cannot fix.

The automatic transmission allows the minivan to slip backward on a hill when the foot is taken off the accelerator or brake. since i had never driven this minivan before, i almost slid backward into another vehicle. as this transmission is unlike that on other cars i have driven, a warning should be placed prominently in the manual, and the dealer should instruct new honda owners about this risk.

First time problem occured, brakes making groaning noise and also experienced brake fading. dealer replaced brake pads. repeat of problem at 13,500 miles; identical symptoms. lots of brake dust. brake system may be inadequate for the weight of vehicle, or brake pad material too soft.

Vehicle has demonstrated abnormal front end vibration since 3/99 at which time the dealer indicated that " mud" was in the tires causing the vibration. the vibration has continued throughout my ownership of this vehicle. the van has been realigned twice since my ownership ( once with the original 4 factory equipped tire and once with the replacement michelin tires). the front brakes have been repalced at 11,000 miles due to severe wear which warranted the replacement of the rotors and the brake linings as the vehcle was said to be " unsafe" by the service manager. the vibration has continued with abnormal tire wear and " cupping" on both the 4 factory equipped firestone tires and now with the 4 repalcement michelin tires. i have called american honda on several occasions to report the problem and also to ask for assistance in remedying the problem. the service technitians indicate that they are unable to locate the reason for the abnormal tire wear and vibration, but do acknowledge that they also experience the vibration, as well as see the tires are wearing abnormally. the original factory equipped tire had approximately 13,000-18,000 miles on them. the michelin replacement tires have approximately 2,000-3,000 miles on them. the vehicle had honda recommended snow tires for the months of january, february, and march 1999, after which the original ties were palced back on the vehicle. the service manager at della honda has said that "honda is aware of this problem and feels it is the brand of tire which is incompatible with the vehicle". upon talking to linda at american honda she also agreed that if changing the brand of tires would solve the vibration, she was authorizing della dealership to replace the original firestones with the michelin tires. this was done and for approximately the first 1,000 mile there appeared to be very little vibration of the front end, after which the vibration has begun again with no remedy from the car manufacturer.

When exiting the drivers seat, the seat angle switch is depressed, which lowers the seat back. we had noticed the seat was in a reclined position each time we reentered the vehicle, but until the current incident when i remained in my seat with one leg outside the vehicle, the seat began to recline on my son directly behind the drivers seat in a child safety seat. this of course scared us and he cried for some time due to the pain of this incident. after about an hour he seemed to be ok other than some bruising. i will contact my local service department about this, but the position of this switch or the switch itself needs to be corrected to prevent injuries.*ak

The right side sliding door seems to slide open by itself. this has happened several times, although, thankfully, it has not yet happened when the vehicle was in motion. all incidents have been when the vehicle was stationary.

The removable base section of a century smart fit plus infant child restraint, ser. # 4529, manufactured 11-21-97, shows signs of collapse caused by normal installation. the extendable foot used to adjust the base angle has thin plastic guides, which the foot moves up and down along. these guides have bent toward the rear of the seat, and may collapse further, allowing the base to settle to an improper angle. also, the blue plastic foot itself shows whitening of the plastic, indicating that the plastic has bent or deformed. it appears that the assembly collapses because of the downward pressure applied during normal, but tight, installation with the car safety belts. this defect was found by, and is reported here by, officer mark bergin, alexandria va police department, 703-848-4763, with the permission of the owner.

Right sliding door often will not close and latch shut, even after several attempts. one time, i thought it was closed, but it slid open on its own while i was driving.

Brakes failed. pedal went to floor 3 times. emergency brake stopped the van. rumbling/vibration sound proceeded the failure by a few minutes. cause of the failure remains unexplained. dealer service found no physical problem or computer event to document the incident.

Electronic left sliding door closure mechanism closes on my left arm, and fails to emergency stopping and retracting. *ak

Vehicle purchased new with six miles on odometer. at approximately 2100 miles, we noted a screeching noise and decreased braking. we took the vehicle to the selling dealer, immke honda northwest -- this dealer put "molykote" on the disks or pads, returning the vehicle to us representing that the problem was corrected. at 3,000 miles, we noted increased metal-on-metal noise and significantly decreased braking. another dealer replaced both front disks and one front pad, indicating that all were bad. this is reported due to danger of reduced braking and the occurrence at less than 3,000 miles (normal use).

I test drove this van and did not purchase the vehicle. when the car was stopped on an incline of about 35 degrees while in the drive position the car rolled backwards between the time i took my foot off the brake and put it on the gas to resume driving. i felt as if the car was in neutral rather than in drive. nobody was behind me so i let it keep rolling backwards expecting that it would stop itself after 2 - 4 seconds but it just kept going. although there should be few, if any, occasions when one does not have their foot on either the brake or the gas when stopped on an incline, i was very uncomfortable knowing that the car could roll back so much while in drive. *ak

The speedometer and tachometer failed during the trip on highway, i brought the van to the dealer, but they don't have the parts and don't know when the parts will become available. driving without speedometer could be dangerous especially in winter conditions.

Consumer received recall notification (o2v120000) the letter stated the repair would be made free of charge, however consumer was charged $42.69 for an alarm wire reinstallation, which the dealer stated was mandatory in order to repair the recall igniton switch, consumer states there would have been no need for an alarm wire reinstallation had there been no defect with the ignition switch and feels the charge is unfair and unethical.*jb

Consumer has experienced, what he feels are, danger in an unsafe vehicle with ignition safety problems. dealer (gerald jone honda) refused to repair, when consumer told them that there local repair shop diagnosed the problem. consumer is expecting to be reimbursed for not only the amount they paid to get vehicle repaired, but also for the mailing of the defective part, the two days they were without the vehicle when dealer said nothing was wrong with the vehicle, and the refusal to repair the ignition switch. (the owners manual stated that this was andis a warranty item) consumer then decided to take vehicle to the dealer. honda said that they could not find a problem. consumer then had taken the vehicle to their mechanic (mannys) and the problem was fixed and the vehicle has not cut off yet. consumer expects honda to refund the full amount paid to mannys for the warranty part. *scc

Consumer stated while driving, the check engine light illuminated, consumer was then informed that bad fuel may have been used, and the dealer cleaned the egr system, however several weeks later consumer received a noticed regarding the pcv and egr clogging, consumer then petitioned the dealer for a refund, and was susequently reimbursed.*jb

Consumer stated vehicle has had multiple brake disc and rotor replacements.*jb

Consumer states the vehicle has ongoing problems with the power sliding doors.*jb

On several occassions vehicle would stall, the dealer misdiagnosed the problem as being a clogged egr valve, however it was finally dertemined that there was a recall in which consumer never received regarding the ignition switch (02v120000)that was causing the stalling.*jb

Upon applying the brake the vehicle suddenly accelerates and is hard to hold with the brake requiring a shift of gears or turning off the engine, the vehicle was returned to the dealer on three occasions but the dealer has been unable to permanently repair the problem. nlm

The internal fuse box that is located above the dead-pedal for the drivers left foot does not have a cover, consumer states the lack of not having a cover has resulted in the lowest fuse being kicked several times when driving and when using the parking brake, when the fuse is kicked out of position or kicked out of the slot completely, the vehicle stalls and can not be restarted because the fuse is part of the ignition system, the dealer is not willing to resolve the problem, consumer has received an electrical shock on one occasion when he touched the fuse that was halfway out of the fuse slot.*jb

The sliding doors freeze shut after it has rained at night and temperatures fall below freezing, the water freezes the rollers that slide in the track, leaving both sliding doors impossible to open. *slc

Van serviced for 7500/6 month service, by dealership. van has had a pronounced pull to the right ever since. van back at dealership 3 times(7/6,7/19 & 8/20/2000) to have problem correct, dealer is not able to correct this problem. *cj

Magic seat does not fold in completely flat when inserted into well, dealer said this is as flat as the seat will go. *slc

Recall 00v119 was complete, however sliding doors are still not working properly. *slc

The location of the cell phone jack on the dash under the cd holder drawer in the front is not convenient, the vehicle must be turned on to use the phone due to design. *mjs

Electric doors on the van are designed to stop if something is in the path, however failed causing injury to consumer, roller went over finger and crushed the finger. *mjs

Vehicle experienced symptom of recall(passenger side door is very hard to open and rattles, driver's side door locks by itself and the other doors remain unlocked) prior to notice (99v-158) vehicle repair under recall but part failed again. yh

Passenger side sliding door does not automatically rebound most of the time due to design flaw. yh

Passenger side sliding door pops open by itself,sometimes the door does not close and other times it does not open. yh

The rebound feature on the automatic sliding door did not work as specified in the brochure, when the door handle on the rear passenger side was accidentally pulled while passenger was entering the vehicle the door began to close and hit the passenger in the shoulder, door continued to close. nlm

Recall component (99v-158) for sliding door is being experienced, latch/motor failure, however repair under recall is denied due to vin #, repair completed (consumer paid) however failed. mjs

Complete loss of power steering occured because of a pinhole in the power steering return hose. yh

Automatic sliding door does not contain a safety feature to stop when opening door as it does during closure, resulting in gas cap/nozzel getting jammed into door. mjs

Sliding door continues to open automatically while driving, unable to close properly and open properly. mjs

Putting a child in the car seat accidently hit the automatic lock on the key chain and sliding door began to close. applied pressure to keep it from closing, but it failed. had to move out of the way. manual states that if a power sliding door runs into any obstacle while it is closing, door will stop and then reverse direction. contacted dealer , and they contacted manufacturer. manufacturer said it is supposed to work like this. *ak *ml

Sliding door gets stuck and on occassion has opened by itself once while driving.

In august the vehicle was taken to the dealer for the left sliding door not working properly. they advised it had a broken center roller and it was replaced (at a deductible cost 100). in november the dealer was contacted and advised the same door they worked on was beeping continuously (the chime for the door not latched), and that there was 1 occurrence of the door opening on the highway 1foot on it's own. the dealer looked it and advised it had a broken latch. over the next 2 weeks they were contacted 2 times for me to be advised it wasn't in yet. 3 weeks after the last visit to the dealer they said i could bring it in on friday 12/28. by this time the door had opened for the second time on it's own. they initially looked at the door and asked what was the problem--they were again advised of the problems. they replaced the door latch again at a deductible cost of 100. the mechanic advised they work on these all of the time and he felt they should get a better fix since it is safety related (mini-van, doors opening on own, children--didn't mix). the vehicle was purchased as a canadian model. vin [xxx], i have nhtsa recall campaign notice 00v119000 but was advised my vehicle didn't "need" that done. it didn't fall in the recall program---based on my 2 problems i feel it should. please let me know what i may do to see that this is fixed properly. i am thinking of selling the vehicle due to this safety problem but cannot in good conscience pass this only another person. thank you. This vehicle has a recall on it, but since i purchased it legally in canada honda does not want to do any repairs on it, forcing me to drive an unsafe vehicle. i have spoken to a few dealers about this & they tell me that they have many customers with this problem. honda wants to discourage people from buying its' cars in canada so they are not honoring the warranties and recalls in the u.s. forcing many people to drive with unsafe vehicles. i also have a malfunctioning automatic side door which could open while driving with children inside. i have documentation for all the above. please help me. in the light of the ford explorer isuue this is just unbeliveable. *ak
