1999 CHEVROLET Venture

Please advise as to if you are in receipt to a complaint made with your company regarding a 99 Chevy Venture that resulted in a crash. I contacted GM & they initiated a 3rd party investigation, which would download the “black box” data. Now, I’m told, the vehicle did not contain any data & there is no report. I called the 3rd party investigator & he advises that a report was made and submitted to GM. He also stated that my vehicle had another problem but he was not a liberty to say. I own a 99 Chevy Venture that was involved in one vehicle crash. My reason for writing is to inquire about the airbag system & steering recalls. The crash was a direct hit (front & center), yet the airbags NEVER deployed. The vehicle hit 2 objects, even throwing/pushing a concrete pillar (less than 10 feet). The rate of speed was around 30mph, but that should not of affected the lack of airbag deployment. Furthermore, the vehicle became uncontrollable in steering just before the crash. On another note, the braking system would not work during this time as well. I am concerned that this vehicle was defective & I am now currently aware that recalls were made for a Dorman steering knuckle and possibly for rack and pinion. Please contact me immedately regarding this issue.

In addition, what campaigns (service records) do you have available for this vehicle regarding airbags & steering? Anything with airbags not deploying, steering/steering knuckle? I have filled out a complaint with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA); regarding this vehicle. Please advise as to how you plan to rectify this issue. As I expect to be fully compensated for this matter. I will await your reply before I further any other complaints with an authoritative entity.

We bought this van in July 2001 with 36,000 miles. Last week the service engine light came on and we took it back to the dealership that we purchased it from. We were told all it needed was a tune up. Three days ago the van starting missing and not running right. We had the van towed to the dealership and then recieved the call that the engine needed to be replaced. We have had this van serviced and the first owner did as well. The manifold gaskets leaked and ruined the engine. Gm nor Anothony Chevrolet will help in any way. Right now they want 3800 dollars plus labor charges to repair my van. WHAT A LEMON!!!!!!!

WATER PUMP FAILED — FOG FILLED CAR WHEN PUMP FAILED. I WAS COMPLETELY FOGGED IN AND COULD NOT SEE. I HAD TO USE MY DAUGHTER’S SWEATSHIRT TO WIPE INSIDE OF WINDSHIELD.INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET FAILEDPOWER WINDOW DRIVERS SIDE FAILED 2X SHATTERED WHEN IT FELL FROM TRACK THE SECOND TIME

Water accumulates in the right front passenger floor mat, then saturates the added floor mat (by osmossis ???).Fitsr occurred August 1998, then again several years later, and has occurred repeatedly (four times) in 2003 during a trip of about 1800 miles (round trip). The Chevrolet Service Department has advised that the A/C Drain Line was stopped up (and was reopened by the Mechanic), but the drainage from the unit drain line can be seen dripping to the ground from the frame of the vehicle. (It appears to be draining onto the frame and dripping in two separate puddles from each side of the right frame, just in front of the Fire Wall.We bought this Vehicle in November 1997, the first sign of a wet floor mat occurred in August of 1998. It occurred again in July 2002, then in June 2003 (when the drain line was again reopened), then during the 11 day trip (from June 30th through July 10th the wet floor mat situation returned.From 15JUL03 through 25JUL03 the Chevrolet Service Department attempted to locate the source of the water leak, and was UNABLE to get the Vehicle to leak !!!ANY IDEAS ?????

Vehicle has been in shop since 8/6/03 for repair on engine, due to continues lost of oil that cannot be found. engine need to be clean,gaskets was to be replace on two separated times and was not. Have been told that van is losing oil due to block engine. wires were pulled and not replace back in correct order.

Van was bought used for a Chevy dealer in May 2002, had 47,000 miles on it. Had been driving it about a month and noticed the low coolant light would go on sometimes and the vehicle was going through coolant much faster than any other vehicle I have owned. No leaks anywhere underneath the car that we could see, inside coolant tank was slushy, dirty and grimy. This is dex cool antifreeze that is supposed to last 100,000 miles or 5 years, guy at Chevy dealership recommended not following that guideline, that it actually needs a flush much sooner than that. This is false advertising IMO.Mechanic at dealership suggested radiator flush, paid $100.00 for that and $75 for a diagnostic check to find out if there was another problem , was told nothing else wrong. 2 weeks later low coolant light came back on again, tank dirty and slushy again. Called service at dealership and asked what is up and requested they do another flush at their cost. Said they couldn\’t help us and it might be a good idea to do another flush but they wanted us to pay for it. Guy also said \"I don\’t think your heat is working, that will be a $1,000.00 repair\" my husband told the mechanic the heat was working fine this morning and has been all along. He didn\’t trust the dealership and didn\’t get the repair done. Low coolant light and the amount of coolant we were going through has stayed the same. Again no sign of leak under the vehicle. Had different mechanic look at it and was told have it flushed again but he wasn\’t authorized to do that type of work on a GM car because of the dex cool. Had different mechanic look at it, was told he had seen numerous issues with Dex Cool and it eats the engine. His suggestion was to have a different GM dealer look at it. I looked it up online and found out about this issue and the bulletin about the faulty intake valve in model years 97-2001 venture vans. Called GM, was told \"it\’s not in all vehicles but if you have it looked at by a GM dealer we can then discuss cost assistance\". I get it looked at by GM dealer, he replaces the coolant sensor ($100.00) light goes off, also checks intake valve and found 2 leaks going inside the engine that is where all the coolant is going. Repair estimated to $950, $850 for parts and labor and $100 to pay for another coolant flush which is recommended after intake repair. Called GM back was told \"car has too many miles on it, we can\’t help you now\" after I told him what the dealership diagnosed. They acted like they could help me but when I actually proved to them there was a problem related to their bulletin they won\’t help. Started giving me the run around about it being bought used, possible customer abuse and out of their hands. When I pointed out their dealership mechanics told me there was no problem when there was, I was told to take it up with the dealership. I no longer live near that dealership and not even sure they will help me.

Transmission lost all pressure resulting in gears not shifting. Violent gear shifting. Transmission should not have gone out on a 2 year vehical. Had transmission replaced with OEM transmission by the dealership. 3year 50,000 mile warranty.

Transmission failure. Computer diagnostic at Chevrolet dealer indicates internal failure. Estimated cost of repair is $3000.The van shaked moderately during normal driving and the "Check Engine Light" turned on. When the minivan was restarted (about 8 hours) the "Check Engine Light" was off and the minivan was back to normal. However, the shaking symptom would reappear a week or two later. I have also noticed occasional hard transmission shifts during normal driving.

The Vehicle has not been fixed at this point in time. I am still investigating the multiple complaints on the web for the same problem. Intake manifold leak. (See Chevrolet Service Bulletin 03-06-01-010 Dated March 2003).

The vehicle has a problem with the injectors. Every few months the check engine light comes on and it doesn’t run very good. It is doing it again and I went to fix it and found the lower intake leaking. Did some research online and found that a lot of others have the same problem. This needs to be addressed by GM. My other problem with the van is when going down the road the wipers flip off the windshield. This is not supposed to happen.

The problems with the venture van are many. We had transmission problems at 33000 miles. The dealer told us to drive the vehicle as the hard shifting was normal due to a stuck valve and that it would go away. It didnt and at 33700 miles it needed a new shift body for 1200.00 which the dealer said wasnt covered due to the milage on the van we fought with GM on this for a month and finally got them to pay half. Now at 110000 we need an engine. when we bought the van we noticed it was using anti freeze we were told that a small amount of fluid loss is normal.Now we have knocking in the engine and sludge in the motor. G.M knows of this problem and should be made to pay. LIKE A ROCK I should have bought a rock

The problem with my Venture turned out to be a leaking water pump based on the mechanic’s diagnosis. So far, sogood. Although, replacing a $300.00 water pump at 82,000 is somewhat ridiculous! The mechanic says it was due tothe fact that the extended life coolant (Dex-Cool) doesn’t perform like Chevrolet says it should, and it is the cause of many water cooling system problems. He recommends changing the ext. life coolant every other year just like regular coolant, and judging from the look of the old coolant, I believe him! August Update: I am now facing a transmission rebuild that the transmission man says is "typical" of these Ventures due to a mfg. defect causing the transmission oil pressure to drop and kick the oil pump into high pressure mode forcing fluid through the system at such high pressure that every time it shifts, it feels like the transmission will jerk itself loose from the vehicle.

The intake manifold gasket failed. A coolant leak developed that if not repaired would ruin the engine.

the engine is leaking oil from the manifold… the thermostat has now started to stick, most likely from the sludge in the coolant… the reserve for the coolant is lined with sludge from dexcool…

seems everyone with the Venture needs to have there intake maniflod gasket replaced shortly after warranty.. what real gets me mad is the dealer told me he knew of no problems with the gasket….

Replaced head gaskets

Problems with the transmission started while we were moving, it started “slamming” gears. I called GM and was told this was “normal”. Soon after the vehicle started to eat every fluid it could. It eats antifreeze, oil (have to carry a case with me at all times). I had two fuel injectors replaced last year at which time my mechanic told me that he found oil in with the injectors and that this was not “normal”. Just recently took it for diagnosis for the loss of oil/antifreeze and was told cost of repair would be approximately $800-900. Of course, GM denies any responsibility in this failure. My entire family owns a Chevy ~ after this I will no longer recommend Chevy to anyone. I have a real problem taking this vehicle on any long distance traveling. I have to borrow/rent a different car that is more reliable, when I purchased this vehicle (which was NEW at the time) so that I would have peace of mind while traveling with my kids. Since this started I have NO peace of mind and I certainly worry about mine and my childrens safety. As far as I’m concerned this van is a LEMON!!!GM has enough money and they keep lining THEIR pockets but refuse to right a wrong and that is poor customer relations and I hope in the future they lose more customers to their greediness.

Passenger sliding door window shattered while driving for no reason at all. Nothing hit the window and it just popped loudly and shattered.

PAINT ON HOOD BEGAN BLISTERING A YEAR AGO, IN 2004. I BROUGHT IT TO THE ATTENTION OF PAUL MASSE CHEVROLET AND NOTHING WAS DONE TO ASSURE ME THEY WOULD PAY FOR IT TO FIX IT. TOLD ME MY VEHICLE WAS PAST WARRANTY STAGE. IT\’S NOW GOTTEN WORSE. ALSO EXTERIOR FRONT HEADLIGHT FIXTURE HAS BUILT UP OF CONDENSATION WHICH IS FOGGING UP MY ABILITY TO SEE ROAD AT NIGHT.

Main problem: jan 03 Cam shaft broke, Engine must be replaced.Mar 02 : Intake manifold gasket replaced. Leaking coolant into engine.Oct 02 Brake rotors warped. Shakes violently while braking.

Lower Intake Manifold Gasket FailedChevy would not cover the cost of repair as it was out of warranty . Chevy also stated that there was no known problem with the Lower Intake Manifold Gasket and that they regularly redesign parts. The work was performed at the dealer and the mechanic said that this is common and the plastic was gone leaving nothing to hold the gasket together and that the redesigned gasket was completly different. Also checking with local repair shops, they knew all about the problem and that they routinely do 2 chevy lower intake manifold gaskets a month.Air bag lightThe drivers side seat belt was replaced under warrenty. The fix lasted about 1 year, then the air bag light reappeared. The dealer said it was the passanger side seat belt retractor needed replaced. I took the car to a local auto body shop, they said there was nothing wrong with the seat beat retractor and the problem was corrosion in the wiring, common problem which they found in the connector and repaired.

LOW COOLANT LIGHT COMES ON AND THEN START TO UP SHIFT HARD, INTAKE GASKET. 3.4L V6

Intake Manifold Gaskets started to leak and needed to be replaced. Have heard of several of these being replaced on the 3.4L v6 engine.

Intake manifold gasket leaks allowing Dex Cool coolant to enter the engine and mix with the oil. GM Customer Assistance will not help. They say "there is no problem that they know of". $1000.00 repair bill for a $20.00 part. Intake Manifold Gasket failed allowing leakage of Dex-Cool radiator fluid into oil resulting in damage of internal engine components and leakage of cooling fluid out of engine.

INTAKE GASKET LEAKS

In March of 2004 I noticed the \’low coolant\’ light come on. I immediately checked to see if anything was wrong, the reservoir was 1/2 full so I topped it off. When I hit the brakes the light went off. From time to time the light came on causing me to check it out. Topped off when needed. In Nov. of 2004 beginning at the coldest months of the year there was no heat. Took it too a mechanic and he said it was either the Manifold Intake Gasket or a blown head Gasket. At a cost of $700. the Manifold Intake Gasket was replaced, (the head Gasket replacement would cost $2500.00) lesser of two evils. it worked fine for 2 days, then the low coolant light came on again. Mechanic said it was probably the thermostat, replacement cost of $235.00. This still did not solve the problem, the van began registering higher temperatures. I called a Chevrolet dealership. They had me bring it in for testing at a cost of $79. At this point they said that there was either a blown head gasket or cracked head. There was no water in the oil or anything else to indicate this problem. Took it to another mechanic, he said there was no blown head gasket, nothing to indicate this. So we replaced the water pump at a cost of $70.00. The problem still exists. We are now at wits end trying to figure out just what is going on and just about broke doing so. We bought this vehicle with the thought it mind that it would be safe transportation for us and our 3 daughters. Now we are afraid to drive it for fear that we will be stuck somewhere on the side of the road with the kids.I can deal with the electrical problems that exist with this vehicle, door locks not working, radio/tape player getting hot, window motor breaking, rear wipers just not working, and the lights staying on when vehicle is shut off. But being stranded on the side of the road due to mechanical failure is just not something that I want to do.

I wish that I had heard about the intake manifold gasket failures on General Motors

I was driving the car and I pulled up in front of My Sons daycare and I heard a big clunck noise and the van turned off. There after I tried to restart the van and it would not start. So I pulled out the manufature book and it said to put the van and Neutral and the van should start and it did, but then it died off and loicked up and I did not even make it a mile down the Road. I called the dealership and they replaced the water pump, the fuel filter, and a belt. Five days later I was driving the van and it did the same thing. Except this time it would not restart. Now the dealership is lost and dont know what to do and is no help at all,because they keep saying they cant find anything wrong with the van.

I STARTED MY VENTURE 1/20/04, AND THE ‘LOW COOLANT’ LIGHT CAME ON. AS IT WAS TIME FOR REGULAR SERVICE, I DROVE DIRECTLY TO MY MECHANIC. HE FOUND THE PLASTIC INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET CRACKED AT ALL 4 CORNERS AND ALL THE COOLANT HAD LEAKED OUT. HE SAID I WAS INCREDIBLY LUCKY THAT THE ENGINE HADN’T SEIZED UP. MY MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT THIS IS HAPPENING TO THESE CARS ALL OVER THE COUNTRY. I CONTACTED THE DEALER AND CHEVROLET CUSTOMER SERVICE, BUT WAS NOT ABLE TO GET ANY HELP OR ADMISSION OF A PRODUCT DEFECT FROM EITHER OF THEM. I HAVE TO TAKE THE CAR BACK TO MY MECHANIC AFTER DRIVING FOR A COUPLE HUNDRED MILES, SO HE CAN CHECK TO SEE IF ANY OF THE COOLANT GOT INTO THE OIL, DAMAMGING THE ENGINE. CHEVROLET NEEDS TO ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS DEFECTIVE PRODUCT THAT IS RUINING ENGINES.

I noticed a smell of hot antifreeze. Also it would make a lot of noise when starting up. The thermostat never showed anything overheating. Oil didn’t show anything on the dipstick. We change the oil every 3000 miles. The dealership that tore into it had said WE did not change the oil ever by the looks of the internals. We bought this used 1999 Chevy Venture LT , August 2000 having 34,000 miles on it already. The previous owner bought this van in October 1998 brand new. How could a vehicle have to have a motor dropped in with only 57,000 on it and have had done everything possible to keep everything in working order. This is not our first Chevy, our whole family buys Chevys. Just to brag we have 13, and all of them maintained well. One even having over 200,000 miles on it,1995 Chevy Astro. Anyway, I watch the gauges very closely and never did I see anything wrong.

I have put my venture in the shop today to have the intake manifold repaired. Coolant was vanishing from the radiator and the engine was making a knocking sound. My daughter recently had the same work performed on her 95 berreta. Something is wrong with the design.GM – Stand-up and make this right!

I have discovered coolant in the engine oil. My coolant is disappearing, and I have been forced to top it off. The engine is making ticking noises, and running roughly. I have done a quick check on the internet to see if others are experiencing this problem, and found that it seems to be a common problem, and that GM is aware of this. They have redesigned the head gasket to correct this problem, but have not offered to fix this problem on my car.Chevy denied that there is a widespread problem, and refused to help cover the necessary repair (they said that because I had around 70,000 miles it was too far out of warrantee). It cost in the range of $815 to replace the head gasket. As a side note, the air bag light turned on intermittently after I got the car back, and now is on steady. I told my next door neighbor about it, and it turned out they also had the same problem. They had an even larger bill ( I don’t remember how much), and they have another friend who has the same problem…

I fixed my 1999 Chevrolet Venture for the first time in January 2002. The intake and head gaskets had to be replaced due to the use of DexCool antifreeze in the system. Evidently it turns to sludge after a certain amount of time. I had 21000 miles on my van at this time and it was covered under warranty. However, I now have 90000 miles on the vehicle, and just had to have it done again. New intakes and heads. I am very upset with this. I have also had to have my air conditioner fixed four times since last November. I am a full time student with three small children. I can\’t take them anywhere long range because I am always afraid of the van breaking down. This van was the newest vehicle I had ever purchased. I bought it so I wouldn\’t have to worry so much about what problems I may have with it and things like that. I am very disappointed in Chevrolet and the Venture. Three or four of our friends have Ventures in the same age range (1998-2000) as we do and they have all had similar problems! What is Chevrolet/GM going to do about this!!???

I am the original owner of a 1999 Chevy Venture mini-van. We had the oil changed at an independent mechanic every 3,000 miles. Last week my wife was driving and heard a knocking noise. The van stalled and we had to have it towed to our mechanic. He looked at it and said there were major internal problems. We then had it towed to our dealer and were told it needs a new engine. Our mechanic said since we faithfully got the oil changed there is no reason we should need a new engine. The dealer gave us an estimate of $5,300 for the new engine. We called GM customer service to see if they would help pay some of the cost. We just mailed them a copy of all our maintanence and are waiting for a reply

Heater fan does not operate on the two lower speeds.Bottom inside of tailgate is rusting from the inside.Power locks will not operate from door switches, only from the remote or when activated by putting vehicle into gear.

Fuel Gauge swings wildly when tank gets to 3/4 full … dealer has said that its no big issue, but it is to us. Checking your site, we have seen similar failures.Please advise if there is a recall.

First time gasket leak occured van was under warranty. At ~30K. Now at~70K GM will not cover it because it is out of warranty.This is a $900 repair! I have also been reading alot about other problems with this motor. I am beginning to think this is a lemon. 24K for a van tha I can\’t get 100K out of! That\’s pretty lousy.

Failure of intake manifold gasket resulted in coolant leaking into engine causing \”gumming\””. This caused cam shaft/engine to seize. Subsequent \””knocking sound\”” and check engine light. Seizing engine simulated a rear-end collision as described by my wife who was driving at the time. She was picking up our kids from school at the time. After 3 trips to the service dealership and 4 weeks engine required replacement.”

Electrical tail light assembly connector, both left and right are melting (ground lead only). All tail lights, Stop lights, turn signals, etc. are out. Looks like connector was undersized to handle required current for all lights.

Blown head gasket………

AT 80K MILES THE INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET LEAKED BAD ENOUGH TO NECCESSITATE A REPLACEMENT AT GREAT COST AND INCONVENIENCE TO MY WIFE AND MYSELF. I HAVE BECOME AWARE OF THE FAULTY GM DESIGN OF THE 3400 V6 ENGINE.

Anti-freeze smell is very bad and from what I read lately on various forums I think there should be some sort of recall and get this problem fixed. I mean come on GM no wonder your stock is junk. I have bought 5 Chevy\’s in the last 7 years, all brand new, I currently own a 2004 Impala, and if that gives me problems I am going to stop making payments let it get repossessed and by an import and see you later GM, all I want is this van fixed at your cost, not mine..58000 miles I had a Mercury wagon and got 600,000 no kidding..so lets be stand up here and do the right thing.

Advised by tech that will need intake gasket repair/replacement again, plus possible engine damage due to DexCool corrosion.Had to replace right front hub assembly (wheel bearings) last July.

1999 Venture with 3.4 l engine and 42,000 miles had failure of intake manifold gasket causing cooling leak. This is common problem with these GM vehicle and they should be recalled or we should be reinbursed for the repairs.

12k miles – one failed fuel injector33k miles – another failed fuel injector50k miles – one failed manifold gasket, symptom was external coolant leak, repaired under extended warranty, coolant replaced.97k miles – same gasket symptom, same problem, same solution. At my own request at time of repair I paid additional money to have cooling system flushed and new thermostat & hoses installed.104k miles – internal coolant leak, blown head gasket, caused overheating, $1700 repair. Coolant in oilpan.105k miles – another failed fuel injector, have not had it repaired yet, happened yesterday.

This will be a list of most of the problems. i have complained of smelling anti-freeze since i purchased the van new. it currently has 94k on it and i have done all scheduled maintenance on it. i think the clock work oil changes is the only reason it still runs. manifold gaskets, intake, head...have been replaced twice and need it again, really bad. but i just do not have 5-800 bucks laying around to do a gasket job again since i just did it a year ago. the anti-freeze diluting the oil has messed up a couple pistons. they slap very bad ok here is my list (i have dealer invoices for everything fixed the first time and receipts for parts and labor the second time, or my husband got sick of paying for the same crap so he would fix things) (he is in the automotive testing and design field) *jb

While driving turn signal lights/abs, and srs lights flashed on and off the dashboard. consumer was able to drive the vehicle to dealer for inspection, and the mechanic could not be duplicate the problem. *ak

Seat belt front left/right tensioner shorted. will not activate the front airbags in an accident according to christenson chevrolet in highland, indiana also, abs brake switch and traction control(tcs) switch were also shorted.*ak

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet venture. the contact stated that when starting the vehicle, the air bag warning light would flash 7 times then remained illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and a diagnostic was performed, which located a failure code for the air bags. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 97,500.

I need to know were i can find out who i tex to recall this van there are to many things thats going wrong with it i fix one thing and something else go wrong with it look i have cancer and need a good car to go to stanford cancer please can u help me.

In september of 2013 i noticed oil in coolant reservoir. took to the mechanic. closer inspection showed head gaskets were destroyed. had the head gasket replaced and the coolant flushed out as well as changed all coolant hoses, water pump, and thermostat to the tune of $900.00 dollars. vehicle only has 84000 miles on it. purchased new in 1999. used the vehicle daily for four months when the temperature gage started fluctuating from hot to cold and found there was very little heat. vehicle would then idle rough. brought back to the mechanic and it appears the same issue is occurring. you've got to be kidding me. another $800-$1000 no way. mechanic advises this is common for ventures. thanks chevy looks like i'll be shopping for a honda. *tr

When entering an intersection after leaving a stop sign the traction control light and abs light on the dash came on and the van began jerking and lurching in intersection unable to move through intersection for atleast 10 seconds before the lurching stopped. always happens when coming from a stop such as a red light, when entering street from side road. happens intermittently, more often when engine is cold. have come close to being hit many times, other drivers have had to slam their brakes to stop from hitting me because it can lurch and jerk not going anywhere for up to 30 seconds at times while van is in intersection or entering a road. abs motor was found to be weak, but mechanic cannot find problem with the traction control system in order to fix it. *tr

Intake gaskets leaking, upper and lower. caused oil to be contaminated with anti freeze and anti ffreeze to be contaminated with oil. gm has since changed the gaskets to a different type of material. mechanic stated that this problem is common with this type of vehicle.

There is moisture in the head lamp housing. this moisture causes the inside to fog over reducing the amount of light. the lack of light makes it hard to see objects at night. *jb

I have experienced numerous electrical problems, including the abs, tcs, and air bag lights coming on intermittently, and the dealer has said there's nothing wrong and reset it. my electric passenger side door would open for no reason when i'm trying to shut it. now, my brake light was out, so i replaced the bulb. that did not solve the problem. my husband then looked at it and determined that the wire pins/plugs are burnt and exposed on both sides. now i have no brake or tail lights, no blinkers, no reverse lights, and at night the top brake light is the only light and it stays on all the time. when i put the brakes on the dash lights dim and the radio lights turn off, the emergency lights come on, and the blinker goes at different speeds. when i called the dealer, they told me to call gm. when i called gm i explained even though it's out of warranty, i feel electrical problems that i haven't done anything to make, should be covered by the manufacturer. they said i need to pay for a diagnosis, and they may reimburse me, if they feel it's a manufacturers defect. then call them back and they'll determine if they will cover any repairs. in the mean time, i'm concerned about a fire if the wire plugs/pins are burnt and exposed. *jb

The pinch welds behind the side sliding doors (left and right) are badly corroded compromising the overall structural integrity of this unibody vehicle. whenever a passenger weighing over 150 lbs. sits in the passenger front seat, the right side power sliding door alarm sounds. when this happens the door sometimes not close or will open unexpectedly even while the vehicle is in motion. with the integrity of the structure compromised, it has also resulted in a cracked windshield. this is not only dangerous but could potentially result in a fatality. the defect has been brought to the attention of a couple of different gm dealerships of which none were of any assistance. *nm

I own a 1999 chevy venture. in the past two months the heater core has gone out three times, the first time being the original that lasted six years. when it goes out, it fogs the window up so bad that driving is nearly impossible. chevy has sent out service bulletins that note a problem with electrolysis that rapidly deteriorates the heater core. the heater cores are chevy parts. there seems to be no permanent fix available. the last repair made today included the addition of a grounding cable. *nm

I have had 3 main problems transmission, headlight moisture and airbag light illumination my 99 venture has 79k miles on it and that transmission is shifting hard (dealer suggest a drain and flush) at 60k i had a valve in the transmission replaced for 800 dollars. i am afraid we will be replacing a transmission at 85000 miles. i can not believe it. the air bag light has been coming on since we bought the vehicle. we have had it in 7-9 times fixes ranged from clearing the code to tightening up a plug. the head light units have been taking on water and burning out lights for the last 20k miles. sounds like a manufacturer defect. from what i have read on the internet a lot of people are having the same exact problems and i cannot believe gm would produce a vehicle like this and not stand buy there product. *jb

We have a 1999 chevy venture minivan with 50,000 miles on it. we started having problems about a year and a half ago with it. after many trips to the mechanic, we finally found the main issue causing the numerous problems. a leak in the intake manifold leaking coolant into the engine oil. the gm part is plastic. it is a small part, but takes 7.5 hours to fix, so the average cost to fix it is $800!!. there are literally thousands of complaints about this part used by gm. there is a petition with over 9,000 signatures!! its time for gm to recall the part and make things right for their customers especially when it is usually families with small children riding in these gm minivans. *nm

Dt: the contact stated airbag light illuminated intermittently, and the power door lock on the driver's side stopped working. he took the vehicle to an independent repair shop who performed a diagnostic test. no codes were found by the diagnostic test. upon further inspection, condensed water from the air conditioning had leaked around the wiring and under the carpet on the front floor. the mechanic determined the water had shorted out the power door lock and affected the airbag wiring as well. the mechanic replaced the wire for the door lock assembly, however no repairs were made to the airbag wiring at that time. *ak updated 12/27/05. *jb

Air-bag warning light i just bought another 1999 chevy venture because i really liked my other one, but it had too many problems. my old one was a ls and this one is a lt. now the air bag light is on with this one too! i do not understand why such an important component is such a problem. *jb

Having to replace both taillight socket modules. the weather proof seal in the passenger side taillight was the start of the problem. water leaked inside causing the socket to short. it melted on of the pins in the plug that attached to the module. this short has happened on both sides now and has started to affect other electrical systems, such as the anti-lock brake system, and the internal dash lights when the brake pedal is depressed. the signal lights do not work at night when the headlamps are on. i am presently searching for replacement parts to repair them. *jb

I have had numerous problems with my 1999 chevrolet venture which my husband purchased new for me in december 1998. last year i experienced problems with the engine light staying on, coolant level constantly dropping no matter how often we added dex cool, and then in the spring i had to have the intake manifold replaced due to engine oil in the coolant. he told me he has had several customers with chevy venture and olds silhouettes with the same problem. just a couple of months after this repair which cost me over $1,000.00 my car suddenly stalled in heavy traffic on route 22 on my way to work. i managed to get it to the shoulder before it stopped rolling despite losing power and called my mechanic. he towed me to his shop and has informed me that my camshaft is broken and he has never heard of anything like it before! well, after finding this site while researching what to do about this problem, i found this site and was shocked to see all the same complaints and since at least 2001 chevrolet has known about these problems and didn't care about their customers enough to warn them or offer to replace the source of the problem before we had major engine damage like mine. i am lucky i was not killed on the highway by a truck rear ending me or something! i am a single mom with 4 kids and i still owe my mechanic over $800.00 for my last repairs and now this! no way can i afford to replace the engine! besides, another venture engine would just have more problems! and now i'm reading about other problems like air bags not working and windows exploding and transmission failures, tail lights and electrical problems! these cars are death traps! and most people who purchase mini vans have young children! gm should be ashamed! *nm

My wife was driving through town with our daughter and her parents and as she was coming out of town started to press on the accelerator to get up to speed. all of a sudden the accelerator pedal went to the floor and the throttle was wide open and the pedal was hanging there and was inoperable. fortunately she wasn't going very fast and was able to put the vehicle in neutral and use the brakes to slow down enough to get off the side of the road and get the vehicle stopped and then her father was able to get under the hood and get the engine to stop revving. the vehicle was towed to the dealership where it was purchased and the accelerator cable was replaced because it had broken. the old part may still be available at the dealership, but i'm not sure.

I was pulling into my driveway when my spare tire fell off of its holder on the bottom of my 1999 chevy venture van. the cable that holds it in place rotted away. i had someone tell me that they experienced a spare tire from a venture coming at them on the highway. they barley avoided a serious accident! thank god mine didn't fall off on the highway!! i spoke to gm (customer care line) and they told me that this was normal wear and tear for the age of this vehicle and they would not cover it. does someone have to be killed by this problem before something is done about it? *nm

My wife with my 4 small children were entering mo hwy 412 when the vehicle started stalling and quit. when the vehicle quit it was partially on the hwy and partially on the turn from where she was exiting. while she alone was trying to push the vehicle off the hwy a tractor truck and trailor almost run them over. take in mind that when these vehicles die they have no brakes or power steering. when i had the vehicle checked out it seems that it had a intake valve gasket blown leaking dexcool into the oil and broke the camshaft. at this time i can't afford to have the vehicle fixed because from the research i've done it will cost $4,000 to $5000 to get the vehicle fixed.

As i closed the tail gate the rear windscreen explded outwards resulting in minor cuts and abrasions on face,neck and arms. the whole windscreen just shattered for no reason. when safelite came to replace the glass their technician advised that this is a known issue with chevy ventures, i believe that gmc should pay for this repair and not the consumer, costing $184.

The windshield wiper pawl will cease to function and break while using in snowy conditions. owner had to replace the entire windshield wiper system due to this small plastic piece breaking every year since ownership. *ak

Tail lights would flicker on/off while in use. dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. *ak consumer wants to know if there is a 'recall campaign', on 2001 model for the defective equipment. consumer believe a recall is needed for safety. rear modules replaced and wire harness for tail lights burnt. replace both rear light modules and wiring harness had to be repaired of burnt wiring. customer states brake lights are surging bright to dim. advise to repairs needed/performed electrical test found both circuit boards burnt and open wires showing/repaired wires and replaced both tail light circuit boards. *bf

The latch on our power sliding door is not latching. i was advised that this problem has already been fixed, but the same problem that the recall was sent out for is what the latch is doing again. the door has opened up on us when we was driving on the road. we shut the power off to the door, locked the door and do not allow any one of the kids to use the door. *ak

The car has been running low on radiator fluid, but we could not find any visible leakages. we have been replinishing the fluid. we did not think anything major. on a friday, we started to hear a knock in the engine. we were told to have the oil changed/looked at. afterwards, the noise continued even louder. we had the car immediately towed. the problem involved the lifters and the intake gasket. I've had a 1999 chevy venture since new. i've had to replace the intake manifold gasket, upper and lower radiator hoses at 69500 miles. replaced the thermostat at 78400 miles. at 78500 miles i had to replace both head gaskets,intake gasket and plenum gasket, both valve cover gaskets and several collapsed lifters, and the cylinder heads needed to be reconditioned. these repairs cost me thousands of dollars. something is surely not right with this engine. *nm

I have my oil changed every 3,000 miles. the intake gasket started leaking and got in my oil and caused it to die on me. the dealer said it was the worst one that he had seen. i have to replace the motor, but what is to say that this one will not do the same thing? *jb

Venture with 89,800 miles has been hard, harsh shifting for some time, also whines. dealer said possible pressure control solenoid epc needs replaced, no estimate. dealer suggested to run vehicle until it becomes a real problem. also discussed with tranny shop, they experienced many of these tranny problems, usually code 1811, replace pressure control solenoid (epc) but to correct problem tranny needs to be rebuilt, estimate $1,600 to $1,900 to do. *jb

I was parking my car at a mall, i put on the brake and hit brake pedal and accelerator pedal together, the accelerator almost took my car into the cement parking bollard, but i managed to stop the car 1 1/2 " from damaging the car. i have complained in the past about this problem of the height of the pedals to chevrolet dealer with no satisfaction. "that's they way they are built, there is no defect". this situation has caused me problems in the past, almost hitting a curbstone and the like. i could be blamed for hitting a pedestrian because the accelerator takes over before the brake pedal if both are pushed simultaneously. the brake pedal should be mounted so that it will be pushed first so as to stop the car and not allow the accelerator pedal to be pushed. i got no help from the dealer. i am afraid that i could get into a serious accident because of this situation. in a great hurry, my foot struck both pedals at the same time. the brake pedal should be high enough to take over. i have had the brakes checked regularly, i keep new tires on my car. my car always passes inspection. i drive a 1999 chevrolet venture. i bought it at clay chevrolet on september 15, 2002, used with 33963 miles on the odometer. it now has 66650 miles. *ak

Intake manifold gasket failed at 91,000 miles. this is the seond time this gasket has failed on this car. the first time (3 years ago, i think) was replaced by gm under warranty. this problem is endemic to this (3.4 v6 and the gm 3.1 v6) engine. gm should recall and fix these for free. *ak

Day of purchase, major engine failures replacement of nearly everything then some. continues to arc electrical sparks under the hood. electrical shorting of all components within the van internal engine issues not correctable just bandaiding fuel issues with oil coolant and arcing constitutes a fire and possibly death. i have all serviced repair documents if one should need to view them. *nm

The low coolant light came on in my 1999 chevrolet venture ls (that i purchased in january of 2004), the engine started making a horrible knocking noise, and then froze up while driving down the highway. after having to have it towed and looked at by 2 mechanics, the diagnosis was that the intake manifold gasket was defective and allowed coolant to leak into the engine, causing the rocker arms to quit working, the valves to bend and the cam shaft to break in half. the cost of a rebuilt motor and labor to install it adds up to $4,300. gm doesn't know if they can help or not.*ak

While driving,the passenger's tire sheared off without warning. the driver had the vehicle towed to the dealer for repair. the mechanic informed the driver that the lug nuts and bolt needed replacement with wheel. please fill in additional information. *jb

We have a 1999 chevrolet venture that we purchased in dec. 2001. we did not purchase a warranty. a couple of weeks after the purchase the "check coolant" light came on and stayed on. we had to keep adding coolant. i do not work on cars and had a very sick wife, so the light was a minor stress at the time. i'd taken the car to get looked at and they said "the coolant is leaking into the engine, and the engine is going" well for a car with just over 23,825 miles on it, i was very steamed. it lasted till 47,359 miles and my wife was stranded on the road. the car was towed and sat at the chevy dealership from sept. 9th till dec. 12th 2002. while still paying $437.00 a month payment. we had a used engine put in it by the chevy dealership which had 20,000 less miles on it, and today has 74,000 miles on it.we paid $2,400 for this used engine. i just found out that the o2 sensor just went out on us. but if there is a defective engine or similar parts on it, is this going to happen again- just a matter of time?

I own a 1999 chevy venture which has been driven 26,000 miles. i took my vehicle in foran oil change and on inspection the dealer found coolant leaking from all four corners of the lower intake manifold gasket. they replaced the lower intake manifold gaket and related gaskets at a cost to me of $753.88. the service supervisor informed me that there was a defect in the gaskets and that they have been seeing and fixing this problem on vehicles with this particular motor. he informed us that if we did not get our vechicle repaired that the engine might seize up. i called the corporate office for chevrolet and they stated that there was no recall on the faulty gaskets at this time. iak

Numerous intermittent electrical problems. the air-bag light indicator on the instrument panel would stay on after starting, but only intermittently. instrument panel air-bag light would intermittently stay on. i took the vehicle to a chevrolet service center on 3 different occasions. onboard computer was replaced at my expense, left rear tail light was replaced at my expense.battery corroded and was replaced at my expense. problems went away briefly after service but came back- instrument panel abs & tcs (traction control system) lights will come on and stay on after vehicle has been driven for 5 minutes or so, but not on every trip only intermittently. also when applying the brakes the emergency flasher / turn signal lights will come on. vehicle has 55k miles and is no longer under warranty, this vehicle is dangerous in my opinion.*ak

While driving turn signal lights/abs, and srs lights flashed on and off the dashboard. consumer was able to drive the vehicle to dealer for inspection, and the mechanic could not be duplicate the problem. *ak

I own a 1999 chev venture van with 65,000 miles. in march 2004, i had to have the intake gaskets replace because it was leaking antifreeze, this had gotten in the cam shaft and caused the cam shaft to break. *jb

Intake manifold gasket of engine failed leading to dex-cool radiator fluid leakage on ground and into engine oil. repair of intake manifold gasket, water-pump, special sealant for bolts cost consumer $807.00. the leakage of toxic fluid into environment has no estimated cost, but represents hazard to animals and environment. chevrolet has received a high number of complaints about this problem and issued a technical service bulletin related to revised gasket, sealants, torque specifications and order of tightening bolts, but did not issue a recall. internal damage to engines is often not determined until complete engine failure despite repair of manifold gasket. dex-cool fluid cited in chevrolet literature as having 100,000 mile lifespan, but fluid appears to have destructive potential to engine beginning at anywhere from 40 to 60% of this estimated lifespan. *jb

Experienced coolant leak into engine. personal mechanic found that dex-cool had caused excessive corrosion to intake manifold and that gasket had to be replaced. spent in excess of $500 to repair this. other people i know say that if the corrosion was bad enough that the cam shaft might break. i am not willing to put my family's lives in jeopardy with an issue that gm is aware of. the fact thta nobody has died from this is no excuse not to recall the gm 3.4l engine vehicles to repair this problem at no cost to the consumer. also, the effectiveness of dex-cool needs to be re-evaluated with regards to performance and the affect on engine parts long-term.

When closing the passenger power sliding door, the consumer noticed that the door would reopen. the consumer had the door repaired before, however, the problem continued. please provide any further details. *jb

Heater fan does not operate on the two lower speeds. bottom inside of tailgate is rusting from the inside. power locks will not operate from door switches, only from the remote or when activated by putting vehicle into gear.

When turning the steering wheel towards the right or left, the steering wheel made a grinding noise. the consumer took the vehicle to the dealership to be inspected and the mechanic determined that the power steering pump failed. *ak *sc *jb

I am the original owner of a 1999 chevy venture mini-van. we had the oil changed at an independent mechanic every 3,000 miles. last week my wife was driving and heard a knocking noise. the van stalled and we had to have it towed to our mechanic. he looked at it and said there were major internal problems. we then had it towed to our dealer and were told it needs a new engine. our mechanic said since we faithfully got the oil changed there is no reason we should need a new engine. the dealer gave us an estimate of $5,300 for the new engine. we called gm customer service to see if they would help pay some of the cost. we just mailed them a copy of all our maintanence and are waiting for a reply

I noticed a smell of hot antifreeze. also it would make a lot of noise when starting up. the thermostat never showed anything overheating. oil didn't show anything on the dipstick. we change the oil every 3000 miles. the dealership that tore into it had said we did not change the oil ever by the looks of the internals. we bought this used 1999 chevy venture lt , august 2000 having 34,000 miles on it already. the previous owner bought this van in october 1998 brand new. how could a vehicle have to have a motor dropped in with only 57,000 on it and have had done everything possible to keep everything in working order. this is not our first chevy, our whole family buys chevys. just to brag we have 13, and all of them maintained well. one even having over 200,000 miles on it,1995 chevy astro. anyway, i watch the gauges very closely and never did i see anything wrong.

Fuel gauge has quit working @ 80k. we had transmission failure @ 18k and a problem with the sliding door @ 21k. we were given an estimate to repair fuel gauge problem of $700.00 to $800.00 dollars.

Failure of intake manifold gasket resulted in coolant leaking into engine causing \\gumming\\. this caused cam shaft/engine to seize. subsequent \\knocking sound\\ and check engine light. seizing engine simulated a rear-end collision as described by my wife who was driving at the time. she was picking up our kids from school at the time. after 3 trips to the service dealership and 4 weeks engine required replacement.

Transmission failure. computer diagnostic at chevrolet dealer indicates internal failure. estimated cost of repair is $3000. the van shaked moderately during normal driving and the "check engine light" turned on. when the minivan was restarted (about 8 hours) the "check engine light" was off and the minivan was back to normal. however, the shaking symptom would reappear a week or two later. i have also noticed occasional hard transmission shifts during normal driving.

Passenger sliding door window shattered while driving for no reason at all. nothing hit the window and it just popped loudly and shattered.

Water accumulates in the right front passenger floor mat, then saturates the added floor mat (by osmossis ???). fitsr occurred august 1998, then again several years later, and has occurred repeatedly (four times) in 2003 during a trip of about 1800 miles (round trip). the chevrolet service department has advised that the a/c drain line was stopped up (and was reopened by the mechanic), but the drainage from the unit drain line can be seen dripping to the ground from the frame of the vehicle. (it appears to be draining onto the frame and dripping in two separate puddles from each side of the right frame, just in front of the fire wall. we bought this vehicle in november 1997, the first sign of a wet floor mat occurred in august of 1998. it occurred again in july 2002, then in june 2003 (when the drain line was again reopened), then during the 11 day trip (from june 30th through july 10th the wet floor mat situation returned. from 15jul03 through 25jul03 the chevrolet service department attempted to locate the source of the water leak, and was unable to get the vehicle to leak !!! any ideas ?????

I have discovered coolant in the engine oil. my coolant is disappearing, and i have been forced to top it off. the engine is making ticking noises, and running roughly. i have done a quick check on the internet to see if others are experiencing this problem, and found that it seems to be a common problem, and that gm is aware of this. they have redesigned the head gasket to correct this problem, but have not offered to fix this problem on my car. chevy denied that there is a widespread problem, and refused to help cover the necessary repair (they said that because i had around 70,000 miles it was too far out of warrantee). it cost in the range of $815 to replace the head gasket. as a side note, the air bag light turned on intermittently after i got the car back, and now is on steady. i told my next door neighbor about it, and it turned out they also had the same problem. they had an even larger bill ( i don't remember how much), and they have another friend who has the same problem...

Has 3.4 l engine with lower intake gasket leaks. i purchased an extended warranty when new and it covered the $700+ repair cost. will this happen again in another 48k when out of my extended warranty?

Seems everyone with the venture needs to have there intake maniflod gasket replaced shortly after warranty.. what real gets me mad is the dealer told me he knew of no problems with the gasket....

The problem with my venture turned out to be a leaking water pump based on the mechanic's diagnosis. so far, so good. although, replacing a $300.00 water pump at 82,000 is somewhat ridiculous! the mechanic says it was due to the fact that the extended life coolant (dex-cool) doesn't perform like chevrolet says it should, and it is the cause of many water cooling system problems. he recommends changing the ext. life coolant every other year just like regular coolant, and judging from the look of the old coolant, i believe him! august update: i am now facing a transmission rebuild that the transmission man says is "typical" of these ventures due to a mfg. defect causing the transmission oil pressure to drop and kick the oil pump into high pressure mode forcing fluid through the system at such high pressure that every time it shifts, it feels like the transmission will jerk itself loose from the vehicle.

Intake manifold gaskets started to leak and needed to be replaced. have heard of several of these being replaced on the 3.4l v6 engine.

Main problem: jan 03 cam shaft broke, engine must be replaced. mar 02 : intake manifold gasket replaced. leaking coolant into engine. oct 02 brake rotors warped. shakes violently while braking.

Transmission lost all pressure resulting in gears not shifting. violent gear shifting. transmission should not have gone out on a 2 year vehical. had transmission replaced with oem transmission by the dealership. 3year 50,000 mile warranty.

Electrical tail light assembly connector, both left and right are melting (ground lead only). all tail lights, stop lights, turn signals, etc. are out. looks like connector was undersized to handle required current for all lights.

Vehicle has been in shop since 8/6/03 for repair on engine, due to continues lost of oil that cannot be found. engine need to be clean,gaskets was to be replace on two separated times and was not. have been told that van is losing oil due to block engine. wires were pulled and not replace back in correct order.

I bought a used 1999 chevrolet venture with 54,500 miles on it. 7 months and 32,000 miles later, the van is at my local chevrolet dealer with $1,650 "$2,200 of engine damage, due to an intake manifold gasket failure.*ak the van's 3.4l engine was well-maintained, with frequent oil changes and inspections. the only warning sign that i got was that the coolant level had to be topped off about once a month. a mechanic said that the coolant loss was due to evaporation. my mechanic offered to replace the engine with a used one for $2,200. he would put a new intake manifold gasket on the replacement engine, so i would be less likely to run into the same problem again. i learned of gm technical service bulletin #03-06-01-010, with subsequent revisions appended 'a' and 'b,' which describes a repair procedure for coolant leaks on 3.1l and 3.4l engines. the repair procedure is 'install a new design intake manifold gasket. the material used in the gasket has been changed in order to improve the sealing qualities of the gasket. when replacing the gasket, the intake manifold bolts must also be replaced and torqued to a revised specification. the new bolts will come with a pre-applied threadlocker on them.' my son called chevrolet customer assistance and spoke with john brooks, who told him that i would have to have my van evaluated by the service department of a chevrolet dealer before he could offer any assistance. he gave me the following service number with which i could reference the call: 1-201938-040. the intake manifold leak was confirmed at the local chevrolet dealer. the service manager estimated that the engine could be repaired for about $1,650, including parts and labor, but that he couldn't confirm the extent of the damage without 'getting into the engine.' getting into the engine would cost $500, after which there would be 'no going back.' he said there would be no assistance from chevrolet, as i hadn't bought or had my vehicle serviced there.

This complaint is directed at potential safety issue concerning vehicles using the gmc v6 engine. in my case, with a 1999 chevrolet venture, a poorly designed intake manifold gasket caused the dex-cool coolant to leak into the engine. this coolant is corrosive and will lead to catastrophic engine failure. the problem is especially serious since the leak cannot be easily detected due to its internal nature. a brief investigation on the internet found well over 5,000 other persons reporting the same failure. gm has refused to issue a recall on this problem, but should do so immediately.*ak

1 inch of sludge in engine, lost of coolant, the engine pinging and knocking, steering and brakes locked up which caused the accident while driving. we changed the oil pump, oil connecting rod, spark plugs, spark plug wires, coils and still engine is broken. started with coolant in the oil. unsure symtoms leading up to the accident. *jb

While driving at 45 mph vehicle in front of consumer's vehicle came to a complete stop, causing it to rear end the other vehicle. upon impact, driver seat track and anchorage came unattached. *ak

Early failure of the lower intake manifold gasket, which caused lost of coolant. 40,000 miles on 1999 chevy venture. believe a poor design of gasket and that the radiator level is below that of the manifold. an air pocket can be trapped in the manifold and when the engine is off the residual heat of the engine cooks the gasket. believe this theory is supported by the coolant sensor is on even though the level in the radiator is full and the reservoir is full. *cb

My 1999 chevrolet venture minivan has had numerous problems. the one i am most concerned with is the automatic transmission. the transmission makes the car jerk when i either slow down or stop in heavy traffic. this happens when i press on the accelerator to gain speed again. it doesn't happen every time but more often than not. there are also times when driving down the road it whines. also have a problem with what i figure is electrical. sometimes the abs light stays on and then eventually goes off. also, the air bag light comes on intermittently. *nlm

There's a clicking noise in the vans' passenger side front end. this is caused by the defect stated in nhtsa recall campaign 99v071000 for the steering. neither the dealership nor the manufacture can't identify if the vans' vin number is covered under the recall warranty, per consumer. *ph

While driving outside brake pad on the left rotor fell off. vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who found the left rotor and inside pad were rusted. the mechanic installed anew left rotors and pads. *ak right pad and rotor was replaced. mechanic stated the rust on the left pad and rotor was normal, consumer disagreed. *ph

Problems with transmission on 1999 chevrolet venture. *mr the transmission was replaced and flushed when it shifted perfectly at that point. the consumer was told that problems with the transmission was common. the consumer received bulletin# 00 07 30 0028/replace the pressure control solenoid valve assembly. the consumer suggested that flushing the transmission damaged the pressure control solenoid valve assembly which caused poor shifting. *scc *jb

Began noticing harsh shifts in automatic transmission of 1999 chevrolet venture van in summer of 2003 when van had approximately 85,000 miles. in fall of 2003, harshness of shifting became more pronounced and van was inspected by a transmission repair faciilty. i was advised that my transmission was failing because of insufficient fluid pressure, and if left unaddressed, the transmission would soon fail, leaving me stranded at the location of transmission failure. i was further advised by the repair facility that such transmission problems are indicative of chevrolet venture vans and that they were surprised i was able to drive my vehicle for as many miles as i did before noticing a problem. while my van did have over 92,000 miles on it when the transmission needed to be replaced, i nevertheless feel that if such transmission failures are indicative of chevy transmissions for my model year, that a recall should have been ordered for the same. i paid almost $3,000.00 to have my transmission rebuilt and now may have some assurance of mechanical functunality. i will drive this van for as long as i am able, but have lost all confidence in gm products and will not purchase another gm product unless adequate assurances are provided against such mechanical failures in the future.*ak

I have a 1999 chevy venture. i have had nothing but problems with the injectors causing the check engine light to come on. this happens every couple of months. i also have a problem with the intake on the same vehicle. it is the 3.4 engine and there are a lot of people with the same problem. i feel that a recall needs to be required to fix this. after spending thousands of dollars on a vehicle is should be right or at least fixed on good faith. *la

My husband and i own a 1999 chevrolet venture. we bought it august of 2002. with in the first month my airbag light came on. called the dealer and we had to have the seat belt tension replaced on the drivers side. about a year later the samething happens again this time on the passengers side. about a month ago our antifreeze light keeps coming on and shutting off. we notice no leaking on the ground however the antifreeze is slowly disappearing. well this weekend my husband took the van on a trip and comes back the next day and the engine is making a ticking noise. we found out that the antifreeze is leaking into the oil causing the gasket to be replaced and the hydraulic lifts to be replaced. this could of resulted in the engine freezing up. this has obviously been an issue with this vehicle and i want to know why anything has not been done about this. just because someone was not injured does not allow the company to overlook the fact that they have a defect with this year of ventures. *jb

I contacted cheverolet for assistance regarding my 1999 venture van. the intake manifold gasket was leaking causing over heating. repairs were made at a cost of $706. the representative at cheverolet (1-800-222-1020) said that there was a recall on the the intake manifold gasket, but not for my vehicle. i asked the representative how can the recall not cover my vehicle with the same problem. that does not make common sense. the representative could not answer the reason why my vehicle was not included.

Steering binds when turned to the left or right to the extent of being dangerous in wet ,icy,or snow weather conditions.on dry roads is still managable but is not safe.steering rak-n-pinion is defective similar to defects on early 1980's g.m. vehicles that dealers were calling morning sickness.this problem occurs more when hot than cold and there is clunking sound also.

Rear passenger's window exploded while driving at 30 mph. fortunately seat was empty and nobody was hurt.*ak

Firestone 2157015 afinity lh30 vw 97h separating on the inside with 21591 miles on it. dealer tells me the separation was due to a road hazard. i think it was due to manufacturing flaw.*ak

As the weather has gotten cooler i tried to use my heating system and just got cold air. the engine temp gauge was going up but i only got cold. then i noticed that the temp gauge kept climbing and i was afraid it was going to 'redline' and it suddenly dropped to normal and i started to get heat in the car. the problem then kept coming and going as i drove. the car is now in the shop and i am told that it is a leaking intake manifold gasket and will cost me $650 to fix. i only have 59k miles on my car. the shop owner also mentioned that he has seen 'a lot' of this problem in chevy ventures (and other cars with the same engine) and that he had another one in his garage as we spoke. this sounds like a desing fault that gm should take ownership of. i haven't heard of a recall so i'm faced with paying so i can have a functional car.

Vehicle side sliding door does not stay shut while driving. the dealership had been contacted on three separate occasions. *ak the service dealer said that it was okay. the consumer was not notified that the door was under recall. the dealer claimed they performed recall#01v26400. the a/c had an odor at times, the dealer cleaned debris from the a/c drain. the cushion was coming apart. *scc *jb

Intake manifold gasket leak. 1999 chevrolet venture with 3.4 litre v6 engine. noticed some coolant loss in resevoir. few days later loud mechanical noise from engine. brought to dealer. dealer diagnosed coolant leaked into engine mixing with oil (from intake manifold gasket) causing top end engine damage (hydralic valve lifters had to be replaced and intake manifold gasket) . mechanic who worked on my van said it was very common problem the 3.4l v6. had vehicle for little over 3 1/2 years with 36227 miles (cost $862) when problem occurred. *ak

I took my van in for an oil change and they told me i had anti-freeze in my oil. therefore i needed to have the intake gasket replaced, otherwise the engine would fail. this job cost me $777.00 to have corrected. i had owned the van for less than one year when these problems occurred. the van had 55,133 miles on it at the time. the funny thing is a few days after i purchased my van my mom purchased one also. about 2 months after she had hers the same problem happened and she had to have her intake gasket replaced also. apparently there is a problem with these gaskets and gm should replace them. or at least reimburse us for this money we had to fork out for a problem that is apparently a little more than a coincidence. *nlm

My 1999 chev. venture started losing antifreeze when it had about 75,000 mile on it. it was not leaking so i replaced the coolent when it was low. then at 100,000 miles it began leaking. upon taking it to my local dealership, they informed me that the head gaskets were bad and needed replacing. the repairs totaled to $2,400.00. i know of one other person that has experienced the same problem with their chev. venture. i believe this is design fault and should be covered by general motors.

Van caught on fire driver's side rear (by the gas tank) while we were travelling about 65 mph, at night time, on a crowded freeway. there was no warning, the only indication i had that something was wrong was that the abs light came on. other people on the freeway were honking etc because they could see what i could not. by the time i got down to about 40 mph, all the lights went out. i got it over to the side of the road. smoke filled the passenger compartment. we got out and ran. a wrecker driver put out most of the fire before the fire dept. got there. i had the van picked up and brought home. i contacted general motors and asked that they come take a look at this thing. they declined to be responsible and refused to send anyone. i took it to an electrical shop and they determined that the fire started at the plug in the back where you can plug in a tv or whatever. i was told that this couldn't/shouldn't happen but it did. i have had other electrical as well as mechanical problems with this thing. i bought it new, no one else has ever driven it so i know the history. i had the wiring redone bypassing that plug but i now have a check engine, pass key & airbag llights coming on. the vehicle is totalled to me as both i and my kids are afraid to ride in it. unfortunately i still have to drive it some because it is our only vehicle.

I have dex-cool coolant in my oil. it seems that i have a bad gasket, and that there are a lot of others who also have this problem with leaking gaskets (which have been redesigned). i think that gm should fix my car prior to total catastrophy of engine failure with my less than 1-year old child on board.

Intake manifold gasket on the 3.4l engine in my 1999 chevrolet venture failed. this is a pervasive known problem with the 3.4l engine produced and sold by gm. gm has had a nationwide backorder on the gasked involved indicating redesign due to poor initial design. i had to wait 4 months for the gasket to be delivered and there were 2 other ventures in the repair facility unable to be repaired or driven due to the backorder. my cost for repair was $538. others have had to pay over $4,000 due to engine failure. this should be investigated and gm made to conduct a nationwide recall/reimbursement of said repair costs. if you desire i will provide my repair invoice. due to the part failure and waiting on gasket delivery and repair, i may have hidden engine damage that may surface at a later time.*jb

The intake manifold gasket failed at 60,000 miles requiring about $800 in repairs. i have been driving vehicles for 35 years and have never seen an intake gasket fail. i understand from my mechanic that this is a common problem and that gm is aware of it. gm should be required to repair this defect as it could lead to a blown engine which would be very dangerous in traffic.*jb

Coolant level kept dropping and the brakes felt spongy. took to local dealer and found that mainfold gasket was leaking and needed to be replaced and the rear cylinders were leaking and needed to be replaced. repair cost $1078.00 for both. this van only has 56,000 miles. good to see that others are having problems with these components, maybe the manufacturer needs to recall and fix these problems. a vehicle owner shouldn't have to spend this kind of money(for these kind of repairs) and risk their family on the roadside on vehicles with this few of miles and age. i've also had an air bag warning light on for most of the time that i've had the vehicle. it was worked on a couple of times during the warranty period. the dealer said it was an air bag sensor problem. this vehicle has front and side air bags. i hope the air bags deploy in case of an accident.

Windsheild wipers come on by there self at random,and on different settings. headlights will work at random. i keep hearing a popping sound coming from under the dash,but of course service tech cannot find a problem with this vehicle.

Airbag light is always on,vehicle was under warranty at time.took in for repair and was told it was the driver side seat belt actuater.this part was not covered by the warranty!and in the event of a accident my seat belt would not lock.

Vehicle will shift hard when driving in city (stop & go) conditions,to the point where you can feel the jolt in the floorboard when shift was made (actualy broke traction a couple of times) this vehicle has not been (dogged) or raced at these times of acurrance.once vehicle has been on the highway for a couple of miles (on the way to dealership) for service tech. to ride with to diagnose problem shifting is smooth again.

My 1999 chev venture van required the replacement of the intake manifold gasket at about 65,500 miles. service department stated that this was due to a bad batch of manifold gaskets and that gmc was now getting gaskets from another supplier. this appears to be a major problem within gm products; however, no recall has been issued; nor was there any offer of a discount or refund from the dealer for this apparent defect. this could be considered a safety problem as the engine could get water in it and freeze up. if this happens during the winter, on a backroad in minnesota when the temperature may be well below zero, serious consequences could follow. i see a pending law suit coming.

The engine blew with no indication of major trouble while driving at 70 mph on interstate 5 at around 6pm. major safety concerns with no power to the accessories, having to coast off the freeway exit and having to push the van to safety. dealer says that it may be the cam shaft. i have read many cases of the cam shaft breaking or cracking in these vehicles, especially after having the intake manifold gasket replaced ( which i have at 45000 miles).

In january of 2002, the heat in our 1999 chevy venture stopped working. the van had around 50 or so thousand miles at the time. the dealer in baton rouge all-star chevrolet could not diagnose the problem and recommended a cooling-system flush as the coolant level looked low in the reservoir. this flush was done at another shop in town. this did not correct the problem and this shop recommended i go back to the dealer. the engine was also running hot, so took it into the dealer with these problems. this dealer did around $1,000 in repairs including a water pump and thermostat. the problem was not fixed as i drove the van home. i brought it back to the dealer the next day and they looked at it and said they could see nothing wrong and would not do any more work. i then took it to another chevy dealer (brian harris chevrolet) in baton rouge with my problem. ultimately they diagnosed the problem as a clogged heater core due to sludged antifreeze, and also a blown head gasket and other problems with the head. they completely flushed the system of the sludge and that corrected the problem with the heat not working and the temperature guage running hot. i had to pay over $500 during the time of taking it back and forth to shops for diagnosis, deductibles and parts and labor not covered under warranty. i am very concerned that i will continue to have problems due to this antifreeze and sludge problem that caused the need for the repairs. i am also concerned that this occurred on a vehicle with only 50k miles.

Css harness retainer clip locks in position on child correctly, but can very easily be pulled apart. *ak the retainer clips on the built in child safety seats were easily pulled apart when pressure were applied due to design flaw. *yh

Another vehicle struck driver on side of consumer's car, and seatbelt behind passenger didn't hold ccs or child in place, seat flew backwards, and child landed on hands and knees. jack for changing tires also came out of compartment in back of truck. *ak

Consumer was having trouble finding a car seat that would fit into vehicle because of the design of seat belt buckles. service manager has tried several car seats from different manufacturers, and found that none were accessible to vehicle. manufacturer will be contacted to look into the problem further.*ak

Rear seat has a comfort guide that is used with the seatbelt to keep seatbelt from hitting child across the face or neck. this comfort guide has a piece of velcro that if child turns left or right it comes loose, so there's no protection at that time. consumer feels this is a safety concern because it should not release with a slight turn of a child. *ak

While driving out of neighborhood sliding door opened all of sudden and without warning. vehicle was parked in the parking lot, and mother-in-law was putting the baby in car seat when the sliding door started to close all by itself. consumer had to manually stop the door by pushing the button on the visor. also, sliding door opens and closes even after closing the door with the remote control. *ak

One of the pins on the bracket weld that holds the rear split seat sheared off. this could have caused injuries in event of an accident. *ak

Middle row passenger side seat belts get stuck in a retracted position, making it impossible to pull them out for use. dealer has replaced seatbelts 3 times, and problem still exists. *ak

Consumer was driving approx. 35-40 mph when every time she stopped at light or make a turn she saw smoke little here and there. the next day bennett chevrolet (larry) 609-641-0444, replaced the shield(12360513), tube, nut, fluid, cable.

Vehicle was involved in an accident. hit a deer at approximately 65 mph, all four air bags did not deploy ( both frontal & side ). dealer/manufacturer notified.

Plastic tube within heating/ventilation system , underneath the dashboard and above accelerator pedal, became loose and fell out. it then got wedged behind the accelerator pedal which did not allow vehicle to retuen to idle, almost causing an accident. also replaced front brake disc rotors and pads. *ak

I contacted chevrolet for assistance regarding my 1999 venture van. it developed a leak in the intake manifold gasket which allowed water to get into the oil. this vehicle was only 3 years old and had only 50,000 miles on it. i did some research and determined that other ventures, montanas, and silouettes were having similar problems and i wanted to know if chevrolet was covering this repair as it was so widespread. it was my belief at that time that my own vehicle was out of warranty, but considering the general failure of the part and the new condition of the vehicle, i hoped chevrolet would at least assist with the repair. chevrolet case no. c06820805. chevrolet rudely refused to assist me with the cost. later i proved to the dealer that the failure was covered by an extended california emission warranty. the dealer refunded me the cost of the repairs.*ak

Gasket failure is due to manifold being made of aliminum and engine block being made of cast iron. any gasket material placed between the two metals is subject to mechanical wear caused by differences is the coefficient of expansion of the two metals. presently, the manifold gaskets are on a nationwide back order; some vehicles have been on dealership lots for weeks.*ak

Transmission needed replacement at 49,000 miles. transmission repair service indicated they had seen this problem (specific problem is failure of a brass bushing) in other chevrolet venture vehicles with the same trasmission. *ak dealership did offer to pay 50% of repair cost. *tt

My van would be all right until i would come to a stop light or stop sign and then it would start to lurch and it felt like the motor was in a diffrent gear. if i would turn it off it would work fine. it would not do it all the time - it cost about 537.00 to fix it. and it was a pres control solenoid. *ak

About one month after installation, replacement fuel filter started leaking. my wife noticed gasoline smell in garage but didn't take any action and pulled out of the garage and started to her destination. about 3 miles into her trip, she ran out of gas. tow truck driver discovered leaky fuel filter located under the car, just under the driver's seat. evidently when car was running gasoline was being sprayed on to the ground, as evidenced by discolored strip on my driveway, about 18 inches wide. car was towed to dealership, which claimed replacement part was defective. called gm customer service to get explanation for why part failed, but they were unable to provide any help. i feel that this failure represented the most serious type of safety problem. the vehicle could have caught fire at any time, especially with gasoline being sprayed under relatively high pressure by the rear fuel pump. this type of failure should never occur. gm was unwilling to provide my any type of feedback other than i should trust them, that they would investigate this failure and that it should never happen again. given the potential risk from this failure, i felt their response was totally inadequate. *ak

Upon making a left hand u turn, the vehicle, while under power, lost drive. the engine did not die, nor did it slip out of gear, after several engine rev's i coasted to the side of the road and stopped. after stopping power returned to the drivetrain. the danger was apparent as cars braked to avoid hitting a semi stalled car.*ak

Numerous intermittent electrical problems. february 2000, the air-bag light indicator on the instrument panel would stay on after starting, but only intermittently. took it in for service on 2/22/00 and they cleaned connections to driver side impact air-bag. problem went away until july 2001. again instrument panel air-bag light would intermittently stay on. may 2000 - doors would lock and unlock continually and locks would not work with remote or key while this is happening. interior lights would flash on and off. i took the vehicle to a chevy service center on 5/11/00 & 5/16/00 and both times they could not reproduce error / failure and nothing was done. after a few weeks the door and interior lights problem stopped.january 2002 - instrument panel abs & tcs (traction control system) lights will come on and stay on after vehicle has been driven for 5 minutes or so, but not on every trip only intermittently. also when applying the brakes the emergency flasher / turn signal lights will come on. vehicle has 43k miles and is no longer under warranty, but problems started 1 year (13,000 miles) after purchase.

All 4 tires on my 1999 chevrolet venture had cracking around the sidewall at the rim and just below the tread. when shown to a mechanic and a tire dealer they both agreed with me that it was the begining signs of side wall and or tread seperation. this was first noticed with only 28000 miles on the tires. replacing the tires at 31278 miles was the only safe thing i could do. this model tire was suposed to have more than 40000 mile tread life. the tread is still exceptable and the tire dealer said they would have lasted another 10 to 15 thousand miles. i could not risk my families life knowing they could come apart at any time. with all tire makers having the tread seperation problem maybe it is time to have the government inforce the safty requirernments in the current laws. the manufacturers will always put the minumum materials in to the products to gain the most profit. if the vehical would cost another $100 dollars per tire it would not change most peoples mind about buying it. i saw 6 other complaints about this model tire failing and think you should have another investigation to start soon.*ak (tiresize: p215/70r15)

The air bag failure indicator light comes on. this is the second time this has happened. dealer representative states that it is "ok to drive, you just won't have an air bag in case of a crash. just be sure to drive carefully."*ak

Minivan failed when it raced away out of control at extremely high speed, with owner at the driver's controls, as a result of a small part in a hvac vent support loosening and falling into the apparatus controlling the accelerator cable, causing the accelerator to be stuck in a position of high speed acceleration. owner tried to stop the minivan and could do so only by jamming on the brake with both feet while operating the vehicle up an inclined exit ramp. *ak

Automatic sliding passenger door opens while car is in drive and turning a corner. automatic door has also not locked and been unable to open manually or electronically. the door will also open and close quickly while in the process of loading passengers. the car has been recalled and replacement parts have not fixed the problem. this is a safety issue for my children and general motors refuses to take the car back .*ak

I was driving on the hwy and the side window next to the drivers seat exploded. there was no warning. it is supposed to be safety glass. it shaddered into thousand of pieces and they flew all over the van. it is my understand that safety glass is supposed to hold the glass together. this did not happened. it was like if the glass had been frozen and then shaddered. it was very dangerous and almost cause me to crash. please advise me if this has happened to other chevy vans.*ak

Sliding side remote door first became inoperative one week after car's purchase. it was fist fixed by original; dealership at no charge. after that it has been back to a different dealership in san francisco over a dozen times and "repaired" (power module replaced, floor plate replaced, switch plate, replaced) over a dozen times, all at the owner's expense. chevrolet put out a recall for replacement of the power module. when we went to have it replaced they said one of our previous replacements (at out expense) had already taken care of that. since then the door has been inoperative eight times. each time the deal does a diagnosis, orders parts and repairs and door breaks down soon thereafter (the same day sometimes). the vehicle is used as a taxi and requires use of this feature for passengers. each repair requires a one or two day down time for cab at owner's expense. he has to rent spare cab and lose his own wages for those days. dealer acts as if they've never seen problem before each time problem arises and proceeds to fix door same as before to no avail. owner may sue for costs (over $1500) and loss of wages..*ak

While driving north bound on i-71 in northern kentucky, my driver side window blew out. i immediately pulled to the side of the road and dialed "911". within minutes, the kentuck state highway patrol was on the scene. as we evaluated the situation and condition of the vehicle in question, i had concerns that the window was shot out. the officer assured me that it was not for the projectile would still be in the vehicle. we further discussed other projectiles hitting the window and that too was ruled out for the same reason as previously stated. also, the majority of the glass blew outside the vehicle. glass fragments were inbedded into the paint on the driver side and additional chips were discovered in the rear window (same side) as well. the sound of the window shattering is similar to a shot gun blast. it scared the *&%&*% out of me, my wife and my children. should we have been in heavier traffic, this could have been fatal. as i have discussed this with many people, i have discovered that this is a more frequent occurence then you would think. i believe that most people assume that something contacted the window causing it break and simply turn it in to the insurance. when in fact, there could be a serious defect in the glass itself or the mechanism used to raise and lower these windows. *ak

Female driver in near vicinity of atm machine at local bank when another vehicle pulled out, requiring quick reaction and applying hard braking action. the brake pedal reacted with a sudden loss of pressure and a spongy feel. driver attempted to drive 4 miles to home and resulted in a total loss of brake pressure with pedal traveling to floor. visual observation by vehicle owner discovered chaffing contact and subsequent failure of brake line with windshield wiper drive bar located under hood. the brake line chaffed is one of four lines leaving the master brake cylinder and contact made with drive bar of wiper system in the area of brake line containing metal braid on a small flexible length. hose diameter approximately .50. vehicle owner is an aerospace design engineer and recognizes that failure is a vehicle design issue due to inadequate clearance between brake line and wiper drive bar. this is a safety related failure. *ak

On september 18, 99 while shopping for a 1999 chevrolet venture i observed the following safety defect and notified the sales manager at santa rosa chevrolet (in california). i also notified chevrolet of this issue on the same date via their product suggestion feature on the chevrolet web site. my concern is with the power assisted passenger side sliding door on the chevrolet venture. there is a safety feature which prevents the door from causing crushing injuries when closing much the same as an elevator. the door will automatically reverse direction when something blocks the path of the closing door. while operating in the opening direction; however, the door has no safety feature which reverses the direction of the door travel. with substantial effort, i was able to "stall" the door assist motor. when the sliding door opens it pops out producing an open gap of approximately 6-8 inches between the bottom of the door and the floorboard of the vehicle (large enough for an adult leg to slip into). there is a door brace located between the lower front end of the sliding door and the vehicle floorboard which closes off the gap at the front end of the sliding door. when the door opens this gap becomes smaller as the brace slides back with the door. when the door is fully open this door brace comes within 1 inch of the rear door opening creating a vice-like pinch point. since the door has no safety feature providing for the reversal of direction when resistance is encountered, anything caught between the opening door and the vehicle floor could be pulled back by the door brace and crushed as the door opens. robert moreno 1532 cabernet circle santa rosa, ca 95401 home: (707) 578-7723 day: (707) 573-4346

This complaint is on the gerry one-click car seat, model # 691. other identifying # 020896a (manufacture date?). we purchased this in late 96 and stopped using it in early 1998. we planned to use it again and upon inspection, i discovered 2 cracks, one on each side of the car seat. the cracks are located on the plastic restraint bar, at the bolts connecting it to the seat. this car seat was never involved in an accident and has been maintained and used properly. we have since disposed of it, however i felt it should be reported and investigated if necessary. thank you for your time.

Heater - the heater does not work properly to heat vehicle -- there is not enough air coming from any vent, whether it be in floor, a/c vents, or defroster position. -- seems to indicate that there is a restriction in the air flow, possible an interior heater door not working properly. -- heater can be on max heat in highest blower motor position and vehicle never gets warn enough to turn heater controls down -- this is a little better when vehicle is sitting still for a long period, but it is not uncommon to have cold feet while driving. -- dealer states that all like models operate the same and that there is no problem. -- air flow through ducts is possible 1/3 that of our 1996 blazer and 1997 pick-up truck, both of which have great heaters.

Subject vehicles are available with an optional power sliding door.the interior handle is oriented in the vertical position in the door panel and lines up at the elbow level when the occupant is seated in the 2nd-row outboard position.if the occupant holds the interior handle in the thumb up position during power-assisted opening, the arm/wrist can be push back with force against the 2nd-row bucket seat or captain's chair seat back creating a risk of injury (other seating configurations have ample seat to door clearance to avoid entrapment of the lower arm).among the 103 total reports, there were 102 alleged injuries including arm/wrist, thumb and shoulder injuries.a count of injuries reveals that 76 injuries were a fractured or a broken arm/wrist requiring an immobilizing cast for four-to-six weeks.all injuries involve the right side power sliding door.the left side power sliding door is on far fewer vehicles, but more importantly, it produces less force.gm notified the agency by letter dated december 21, 2004, that it will recall model year 1997 though early 2005 gm u-van vehicles equipped with a right side power sliding door and with 2nd-row bucket seats or captain chairs (nhtsa recall #04v597).as part of the recall remedy, gm will replace the door handle with a "flush mounted handle" that will prevent an occupant from grasping the handle with the palm between the handle and door panel (thumb up orientation) and thus eliminate the potential for arm/wrist entrapment.this investigation is closed.
