1999 CHEVROLET Silverado

K2500: The ABS Module failed. The defective module allows the ABS unit to continue to run with no method of shutting it off until the battery runs down. Finally had to get under vehicle and jerk a wire off. I get back to town and take to local repair shop. I explain the problem to the shop owner and he amazingly tells me what the symptoms are before I have a chance to finish. He just replaced a defective in another 1999 Silverado just an hour hour before I came in. I live in a desolate town of 500 in Lincoln, Montana. I am told that they have sent numerous Technical Bulletins that have indicated that these ABS modules are being updated and corrected since they are found to be designed with flaws. I live in the mountains, and when you have ABS brakes you learn a whole different way of braking on snow and ice. This unit goes out and now what do you have. Since you don’t know when it does and you get the extra bonus of it running down the battery (60amp fuse required for this module), it is a accident in the waiting. I am told by the mechanic that this is a common problem in the 1999 Chevy trucks. The bonus for Chevrolet is that it is redesigning and upgrading a malfunctioning unit on the backs of the consumer. I paid $570 for this the day before Christmas. Chevrolet got a nice Christmas gift. Is this not a serious problem if this is widespread and should it not be a recall item. Where will I be when the next one goes out a couple of years from now. Will I be coming down Rogers pass on the ice?

I have already had the steering center shaft replaced once under warranty. I have a full extended warranty and they refuse to fix it now. They are telling me GM has resolved the problem by adding a lube kit cost of 140.00 to me to fix it. Vehicle is STILL under warranty till 100,000 km. I feel this is not the correct action for a part failure.

While driving the brakes, including emergency brake failed totally. The dealership said that the brake and fuel lines had completely rusted through from the front of the truck to the back and needed to be completely replaced. I had just had the truck in for a 80K mile check up barely 4 months before and NOTHING was detected. The manufacturer said they will not cover any portion of the repair cost. I am the original owner and have always taken exceptional care of the vehicle.

Total failure of brakes resulting in near collision with another vehicle. Brakes failed again enroute to dealer for repairs. Front speed sensor replaced. The next day the brakes failed again while stopping before entering a highway. Fortunately no cars were approaching. Returned to dealer who replaced the other speed sensor. GM paid for this repair as a gesture of goodwill.Dealer and GM claim that they have never heard of problems with the Silverdo\’s brakes. I have registered a complaint with the NHTSA and judging by the number of issues relating to brake failures with the Silverado one has to wonder what it will take to get the NHTSA on board.

This is the first new vehicle we have ever bought. But not a good expreience, we have always had GM products with no problems. We just had the truck in the garage and they put it on the computer, it said code PO137 02 sensor bank 1 sensor 2 replace also code PO300 misfire #7 cylinder replace injector and fuel pressure regulator. This cost 448.78. Also PO300 misfire #7 cylinder replace injector and fuel pressure regulator and code PO463 fuel level sensor needs fuel sensor replaced at a cost of 301.00. We can’t afford this at this time. They also said both front wheel bearings with speed sensors need replaced at a cost of 642.00. We can’t have this done now either. We are going to try to get along with the brake failure longenough to save money to fix. We replaced the battery Sept 11th at a cost of 65.00 and an alighment in June at a cost of 47.00 and rear brake rotors and pads replaced in July at a cost of 279.00. We had thought of trading or selling outright and getting another truck, but can’t sell it as it is.

The rear bumper has surface rust. The rear sliding window has a plastic seal around the entire window and has shrunk so much that the stress has split the seal three different times allowing water into the cab. The ABS failure when the engine is shut off the motor continues to run.

the parking lights on my 1999 Chevrolet Silverado ext cab LS come on by themselves and will not turn off no matter what you do. it seems to only happen when it is raining. the only way to get them to turn off is to disconnect the battery. a HUGE inconvenience because since it only happens when it rains i have to stand in the rain and disconnect the battery to get the lights off. it has happened at least 10 times now and I have only had the truck for a month. i just bought it used from Tracy Volkswagon, CA. i’ve taken it to get looked at twice now and each time the dealer says there is nothing wrong with it because they can’t duplicate the problem. it wasn’t raining when i took it in. this is a huge inconvenience.

The ABS module located under the driver’s side of the truck, below the body and mounted on the frame failed. It produced a constant “whirring” noise and an ABS failure light on the instrument panel, even when the ignition was turned off. Removing the ABS fuse from the fuse block was the only way to stop the ABS pump motor from running constantly. When contacted, a Chevrolet dealer informed me that that is what happens when the ABS hydraulic unit fails (shorts out) after getting water in it.Why a part that is succeptible to water damage would be mounted in one of the most water intense areas of the truck is beyond comprehension. Not only does this part sit unprotected under the body, but it is in direct line with the rooster tail that the front driver’s side tire creates. If this part cannot handle water, it should have been hermetically sealed or mounted in a much drier position on the truck.For this part to fail shortly after the truck exits the warranty period reeks of planned failure. The fact that a replacement part is not available from anyone except the dealer is ridiculous for a truck that’s four years old.It seems GM knew this part would not last and planned on getting the money for replacement parts long after it should be available on the aftermarket. The additional fact that this part is almost unlocatable in the used part market shows that this part fails on several 1999 Silverados. This part should be replaced by GM for at least five years (the normal amount of time people finance a car for) or 100,000 miles, as it’s not a part that should get a lot of use, nor fail easily. It’s a defective part installed in a defective location and GM should take responsibility for making their mistake right.

The ABS control module on my truck has failed. I have talked to several other owners , more than a hundred personally, and they have all had the same problem. It makes the ABS not work and I had to remove the fuse to the ABS control module. This makes my truck not have anti-lock brakes. This is a dangerous matter when you deal with such a large truck. The antilock brakes go out, which increases the stopping distance tremendously! I and others have had to replace tires due to the ABS module not functioning correctly. The dealership said they would charge me$1200 to replace it with the same faulty equipment! I\’m just curious why this company can sell a product that is known to be at a fault ,and to continue to do so. It seems to me they just want us consumers to replace them when they tend to go bad! If I had not read the operational manual and have the experience to know how to deal with such a problem then the cost of the ABS pump would also be added to the cost of replacement! All I won\’t is for GM to notice that they have a defective part that they are just replacing instead of modifying the one that is wrongfully inadequate!THANK YOU FOR YOUR RESPONSE, and help the people that just get taken!

sold to me this way by a cardealership. front end has bearings gone out of it. tranfercase has holes in it where the casting was poured.high speed vibration and loud growling noise from transfer case when in auto trac.

Mounts for torsion bar supports rusted out, General Motors is aware that this is a common problem, and will not recall the trucks. They say it is not that they have been flagged about it, but it doesn\’t constitute a recall. My question to them was, how many repairs to your trucks does it take to warrant a recall, and their answer was they don\’t know.If they know it is a common problem, why don\’t they recall? This is a serious problem it is a suspension problem. my trruck does not have that many miles on it, and it is only a 1999 truck, very clean, and very well taken care of….I feel General Motors is sweeping this under the rug, because of so many trucks that would have to be repaired,so they feel lets just over look it..Well I\’m here to say I\’m not overlooking it, and feel it needs to be addressed by someone…Is anyone else aware of this problem, please forward the information to me..SincerelyJim Kurek

manual transmission locked in gear. emerg. brk. cable will not adjust. abs module has noise. stopped by removing fuse, abs feature not functioning. trans failed in feb. 2003 @ 65k miles. repair made by valencia chevrolet in valencia calif. cost was handled by a extended service warranty. cost to me after a lot of heated negotiation was 85.00. the agency wanted me to authorize a new trans. and clutch. cost: 3600.00 the emergency brake cable failed @21k miles in 2001, the abs module failed @42k miles. in 2002. Neither brake item has been repaired. valencia chevrolet wants 2300.00 to repair the abs problem, no quote to repair brake cable.

I\’m very afraid to drive my truck because nobody can seem to figure out the problem with the brakes. I keep getting told nothing is wrong because the problem doesn\’t show up on the computer when they test the brain chip in it. I guess someone dropped the chip on it\’s head to many times. When you go to apply the brakes, they jam up and just plain won\’t work. If you let off quickly and then touch them again you can sometimes get them to work. The biggest problem is you never know when it\’s going to happen and if you have to stop really quick, well I\’m sure you can understand my concern. More than most of the time they don\’t work. I\’ve come so close to having several (could of been major ) accidents. I have no other vehicle to drive and I\’m not in a position to buy another vehicle. I also don\’t have a lot of money to keep trying to fix a problem that they can\’t seem to fix. My question is- Who will take the blame when I have a bad accident because of a problem that nobody can fix! I\’ve had several trucks through the years but this one has had MANY MORE PROBLEMS than any of them. It only has 76,000 very easy miles on it and I take excellent care of my vehicles. I’ve had my ABS module go bad, my fuel pump, evaporator solonoid, my service 4 wheel drive light is on, my truck starts hard,(about the same way it did when my fuel pump was going out) I’ve got a loud clunk when I put my truck in gear,(sounds like u-joint, but I’m told is a bad yolk) My drive shaft slip joint makes a squeaking noise upon take off. I had to replace my drivers side window regulator because the cables were all bound up. My cruise decides upon occasion, when the A/C is on, to work intermittantly. Now my radio display decides that it dosen’t always want to come on when I start the truck. How about instead of an equipment recall, GM writes off the 99-00 Silverado as another Corvair failure and recall the entire run of 99 Silverados. Wishful thinking I know, but what a slap in the face for life long Chevrolet owners/fans! So much for bragging rights when it come to the endless Ford vs. Chevy saga. I’ve waited my whole life to have a new Chevy pickup, now I finally got one and this is what I get, a pile of junk that sucks all my money, pride, and patience, not to mention the fact that I spent so much on the truck that I can’t afford to fix everything that’s wrong w/it! How does that slogan go again, “Chevrolet, the most dependable, longest lasting truck on the road?” That may have been true until the infamous 99 Silverado. Maybe I should hunt down my 79 Scottsdale, that’s still going. I guess for now I’ll continue driveing my 67 GMC, you know, the one that was designed by engineers who weren’t in it for glitz and glory. 67 was also a first model year like 99, you never heard of any brake faliures or driveline problems then.

At the time and date of occurrence, this vehicle was being operated by writer and original owner of same. I pulled off highway into gas station/store rolling slowly to a parking spot in front of and perpendicular to store front. The vehicle was nearly stopped, at most, 3 to 5 mph foward speed, when the anti-lock brake control activated allowing the vehicle to continue foward movement. I must stress that maximum brake pedal pressure was applied, there were no slippery road surface or any other exigent circumstances present, the vehicle ABS system simply would not allow the vehicle to stop at this low speed and subsequently it impacted the aforementioned storefront causing damage to same and the vehicle. Additionally, I must add that I am a former NY State Trooper with in excess of 1 million miles of motor vehicle operation without an accident. I immediately took the vehicle to an authorized Chevrolet dealer who informed me that the cost to repair the problem and damage to the vehicle would be about 2000 dollars. I have heard of others with similar problems, but had this happened at an intersection or some other scenerio, someone may have been killed or seriously injured. I no longer own this vehicle and took a significant loss in the transition, but it certainly could have been much worse. I realize that Anti-lock braking has its merits, but in this case was the cause of a non-preventable property damage accident. I feel GM should be called to answer before this ABS malfunction causes a non-preventable fatal accident and the victim is silent!

ABS system has a continuous buzzing sound coming from beneath the truck even when the keys were turned off. The only way to stop it was to disconnect the battery. During evaluation of a repair, the steel screws that hold the system together were screwed into an aluminum plate and were so rusty and corroded that one of them broke off when the repairman attempted to remove it. ABS system is placed where it is unprotected from moisture and road chemicals, such as salt.

ABS pump motor runs all the time , even when the ignition is turned off. P.S. Looked for a solution on the WEB, found that this is a fairly common problem with the 1999 Chevy Silverdo and very costly. Called Chevy Motor Division, they gave me a service request number and said to take the vehicle to the dealership for evaluation.

ABS pump kept running after ignition shut off. Diagnosed ABS computer was bad.

ABS CONTROL MODULE FAILED ABS MOTOR RUNS CONTINOUSLY EVEN AFTER TURNING THE VEHICLE OFF.

ABS brake system continuously applies brake at randomwheels. This is a dangerous failure that could cause harm to the driver/passengers and other vehicles. It isno wonder that GM is going bankrupt, making junk like this.

A couple of days ago my driver side power window control crapped out, AGAIN. Driver side 2 times, passenger side 1 time. Over a 16 month period.The driver side power window crapped out April 2003, had motor, regulator, switches, etc replaced, cost me $100. deductable. And in January 2004, the passenger side had the same and $100. cost to me. Back to the driver side window now….another $100.??- I don’t think so! I just want your input before I go down the paper war path with Chevy. The Service Dept. at City Chevrolet here in San Diego (that I have loyally patronized sine 1999) said to bring it in after I called but won’t promise to fix it without a charge. I think I have paid enough for a faulty product, that keeps getting replaced and failing. Any suggestions?I feel like I don’t even want them to fix it only to break again. I want the doors replaced with manual windows and door locks. I’m very tense about my door locks now. Wouldn’t want to end up having to kick out a window to get out.And, based on web searches, it is apparent that GM has known for a while that they have a problem with power windows, and knew when they charged me the $100. deductable in 2003 and 2004. Based on that, I may fight for a refund too. Thats it, I want my $200. back and manual doors installed at no charge.Thanks for you time and attention.Whitney

1999 CHEVROLET C1500 SILVERADO. I am a 70 year old widow on SS and I am not able to pay to have this module replaced. This is the anti-lock module. All we could do is disconnect this and only have regular brakes. If these don\’t last any longer than this why do they put them on the pick ups in the first place. This is an LE and not the most expensive, but certainly not the cheapest either. Within 2 weeks of buying this truck I had mice running around in the foor board. This has continued to be a problem with them coming in the tube under the windshield where the air decompresses when you close the doors. Shoddy workmanship. Pickup trucks are supposed to workhorses, this one is not.

1. Power Window passenger door: Operates slowly and if it gets too warm will quit. After 30 seconds will continue slowly2. Other – CD Player: Plays tract 1 then skips & ejects CD(laser out of line)3. ABS system has failed – Automatic Brake Control Module has to be replaced. This is a common problem for the ’99 Siverado. (The local auto wrecker won’t even sell a used one unless there are less than 40000 km. This should say something!) I feel this should be a recall

1999 silverado anti lock and brake indicator dash lights are coming on all the time. *ts the consumer was told the anti-lock brake module needed to be replaced. the consumers vehicle was included in the recall, however after the recall was performed, the lights illuminated every time the vehicle was in motion. the consumer was told the problems were not related and the manufacturer was not willing to replace the module free of charge. *jb

Letter stating has not been reimbursed for recall repairs on 1999 silverado's antilock system. *ts ***nar*** the antilock brakes would activate while braking the repairs were made prior to the consumer receiving the recall notice. the consumer submitted a claim for reimbursement. the manufacturer denied the claim for reimbursement because consumer did not produce a work order from a certified mechanic. *nm

Consumer 1999 silverado developed corrosion between the front hub/bearing assembly and the wheel speed sensor. *ts the consumer received recall 05v379000. in september 2003 the consumer had to replaced the front an rear brake rotors and pads with less than 17000 miles. the consumer was told then that the cause was excessive corrosion. the consumer contacted gm at that time but they offered no assistance. when the consumer received the current recall he submitted the invoice to the manufacturer. they refused to reimburse the consumer stating the work done was not covered by the recall. *nm

Firestone steeltex class action status request.*mr while pulling a fifth wheel trailer at about 50 mph, the driver heard a loud thump from the rear of the vehicle. the consumer stopped and noticed that eh rear tire had separated and the loose tread end was hitting the mud flap and curled the panel upward into the wheel well. upon request the consumer sent the tire to firestone on may 18, 2004. on june 8, 2004 the consumer received a letter from a law firm indicating that his claim for reimbursement had been denied. *nm

When driving over a rough surface road, such as a gravel road, abs system chattered and the brake pedal went to the floor. also, when this occurred, excessive force had to be applied to the brake pedal to stop the vehicle. dealership replaced the abs computer chip. this corrected the problem temporarily. . the problem had progressively gotten worse. the regional representative indicated that the abs was within their level of acceptance. *ak *la

The abs light illuminated. it was later determined that the abs module failed. *nlm

Driving along road, brake pedal went to the floor when i attempted to stop. upon inspection, discovered that the hydraulic line going from the abs module to the rear brakes had ruptured due to corrosion. upon further inspection it has been determined that all of the hydraulic brake lines are swollen and corroded to the point of failure and must be replaced at a cost of over $1200. my truck has not moved since, as i cannot afford to repair this issue.

I came out to my truck one day and the cab was touching the back of my box. i look under it and the frame was broken and rusted out on both side by the gas tank. vehicle i'd beyond repair and not drivable. only has 181xxx miles on it.

While approaching intersection put on brakes and they failed, pedal went to the floor. if i had not been a test driver for chrysler corp. and doing lots of brake and suspension work i could have easily been seriously hurt. the brake lines were shot, rusted through. this vehicle has spent it's life in fl. no salt on the road. i know you have ruled on this being a recall, but i think you made a huge mistake, someone will be killed by this. thanks

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet silverado. while driving 20 mph and attempting to engage the brakes, the accelerator pedal went to the floor and the brakes failed without warning. after inspecting the vehicle, the contact discovered that the brake line was corroded. the vehicle was driven to the contact’s residence where he discovered large amounts of brake fluid leaking from various spots on the brake line. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 138,000.

I was driving to my home from work when i noticed an excessive knocking sound coming from the front of the truck. i pulled into my driveway looked at the front suspension and around both tires. that's when i saw that the passenger side front upper shock mount had broken free from the frame. the shock was just banging freely against the frame. the truck is 15 years old so i know its not under warranty, but that's just poor construction. the truck has been my daily driver and has never been offroad. judging from the other complaints regarding the frame cracking and/or breaking that i've read, i'm assuming gm isn't going to do anything about it. it's just sad. regardless, i think nhtsa should issue a recall because this is a safety concern. the excess bounce can cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle. *tr

I was driving home on memorial day 2014 pulling my boat and trailer. traffic was stopped outside crivitz, wi and i had to hit my brake pedal. it went right to the floor - no brakes at all - contrary to the gm info in an article i read on yahoo. i quickly hit the shoulder, fortunately wide and hard, and coasted into a mini mall in crivitz. down shifted as i went and hit the emergency in the mall lot. feel very fortunate that my wife and i are alive as well as those in front of us. both back brake lines were blown as well as a front. truck is maintained every 3-4 months. gm is full of beans. i have driven numerous chevrolet cars in excess 0f 180,00 miles without any brake line issues. this to me is faulty engineering. $1100+ to repair.

Brakes: since approximately 136,000 miles to present miles, the vehicle has exhibited an abs and brake warning light intermittently on the dash. this is a known gm issue that was recalled in certain states, but not all. it stems from faulty soldering points in the abs control module and can affect the vehicles ability to stop correctly which could result in an accident. engine/ emissions: the passenger side exhaust manifold bolt has broken off. this is a known issue with this 5.3l engine as well as the 4.8l and 6.0l engines. gm has failed to recall in spite of having thousands of complaints. the issue can cause failed emissions and potentially engine fires. engine: as of 164,000 miles, the engine is experiencing loud "piston slap". this is a known issue which gm addressed through redesign in later models. it leads to excessive engine wear and potential engine failure. it appears to be a factory defect, yet gm has claimed it is not important despite numerous complaints from customers that the engines have required replacement as a result. *tr

Driving on two way street attempted a right hand turn applied brakes, peddle went to floor, attempted to pump, truck slowed to stop. noted large amount of fluids on road. truck was taken to mechanic, found brake-line had burst on left front wheel. after inspection noted that all brake-lines looked like kfc chicken were all corroded and brittle. mechanic indicated that this was a extreme safety hazard. recommended that i contact dealership and report incident. also, fill our and file a vehicle safety complaint. i was not informed by gm that there maybe a problem that has been on going and after looking into it have found both gm's cavalier attitude, and the governments not requiring at the very least a notification never mind a total fix to be required of gm a serious breach of confidence in my government to provide for the safety of its citizens. *tr

I own a 1999 silverado ext cab 4x4 and the frame is rot in many different places the driver and passenger mid sections are half gone and now the rear sections under the bed are rotting to the point to where the is no good metal left the bed buckled and is hitting the cab the rest of this vehicle is in very good condition but the frame is gone. *tr

Hello im reporting a problem i have noticed about rust on the under bodies of the chevy and gmc pick ups. it is a widespread problem and needs to be resolved. there are too many vehicles reporting this problem to make it a coincidence. i myself have this problem where my frame has now cracked for the second time. people are complaining more and more and our safety is at stake. please whatever can be done to bring gm to recognize this problem can and will save a lot of lives as well as hundreds of thousands of dollars. thank you *tr

Was going to work at about 3:40 pm about 15 miles from my house had stopped at 2 stop signs and 3 red lights was going down hill towards 4th stop light cars were slowing down in front of me speed limit was 45 i was slowing my vehicle at about 25mph or less lost all brakes pedal went completely to floor was not able to stop vehicle hit truck in front of me no one was injured thank god this vehicle was bought brand new buy us at shelor motor mile chevrolet in christiansburg virginia it came with lifetime inspection by them had always been inspected by them last inspection 7 month this year last day of month never got any call of recall notice from gm or check brake line information from them i think gm should pay to have my truck brake lines replaced and be held liable for damages to my and the other persons truck this is a much more severe problem then ignition switch cutting off i think gm is putting this off because of cost and labor charges the truck is being towed to dealership today by the way brake lines at left under drivers door at abs valve burst with no warning due to corrossion. *tr

I was moving the 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500 in my driveway to make room to move another car. i backed the truck into my turn around, then put the truck into drive to move it forward a little. when i pushed on the brakes to stop the pedal went halfway to the floor stopped them went clear to the floor. i had no brakes, other than the emergency brake on the truck, which i used to stop the truck. after getting the truck stopped and to a spot i could inspect it. i discovered that two brake lines had burst and were leaking fluid onto the ground. the breaks were not in a bend in the line where they seems to typically happen. they were in a straight section just underneath the drivers side door where the lines run along the frame. upon further inspection i noticed that all the brake lines were as heavily corroded as the section that had burst. luckily this happened in the driveway as i was preparing to leave in the truck. *tr

In 2013, the abs began routinely activating during braking at speeds of 5-10 mph. i found recall 05068: unwanted abs activation. my gm maintenance records noted this recall service was completed 3/31/2006. the 3/31/06 service notes were "inspections: electrical/wiring." i contacted gm corporate customer service in jan.2014 to notify them that currently my abs were erroneously activating on nearly all braking events. additionally, i asked what recall service was actually performed on 3/31/06 because the notes only indicate an inspection occurred. a conference call ensued between gm customer service, the local gm service dealership, and myself. gm allowed 1 hour to diagnose the abs problem on 1/22/14 at the local gm dealer. the resulting 1/22/14 service notes were: "diagnose & found left front wheel speed sensor dropping out. inspect wiring for poor connections or damaged wiring. all ok. gave estimate to replace left front wheel hub assembly." in person, the dealership said this bearing was worn & was causing abs activation. i left upset, without the $642 wheel hub assembly install because i didn't believe the bearing was worn. on 5/30/2014, i had another service shop independently diagnose my trucks bearings, tie rods and suspension. they confirmed my original belief that the bearings did not need to be replaced. i did have both inner tie rods replaced at this time. on 6/17/14, i took my truck to a 3rd service shop to have them complete a front end alignment because inner tie rods were recently installed. i also asked them to determine if this bearing was worn. their opinion was the bearing was ok and no maintenance was required. in summary, the gm service shop had opportunities on 3/31/06 and 1/22/14 to complete the recall remedy and failed. i have removed the fuses to disengage the abs and prevent an accident because this condition still exists. *tr

While on my way home from work my 1999 silverado s abs brakes went off and would not stop. hit my house. called gm said they never herd of their trucks doing this. well did some reseach and found their was a problem with corrosion on the abs sensor which would set off the abs 4 no reason. it was scary and is a huge gm problem.. found my truck was fixed at one point but it still happend again.. it is fixed again. but i know it will happen some time in the near future.. which is scary to think i could have ran into a school bus or kid and killed them. gm did fix my truck. and pay 4 the house to be repaird.. i dont want to sue or be compensated any further!!!!! i just want them to have to fix these trucks or pull them off the road!! i did not know at the time of incodent that you guys exhisted.. so this is why i am reporting now.. and if somthing happens latter i have prooff that i complained. i am a pa state inspection mechanic. and will give my liscense number if asked to.. i see this happen to much! and if i can save one life it is worth it to me.. i hope this will be looked at and delt with the way the gm recall is now being held. just look at all the complaints on this ishue.. again i dont want money!!! i just want to try to save a life! thanks. *js

Steel brake line ruptured while applying brakes in parking lot. after inspecting the steel brake lines; they appear to have severe corrosion issues throughout the braking system. i believe all brake lines needs to be replaced due to severe safety concerns with the remaining steel brake lines. i am glad that the brake line burst at a low speed and not during a fast stopping situation. *tr

While bringing vehicle to a stop, brake pedal was depressed as normal but the pedal went all the way to the floor. steel brake line burst and fluid was dispersed on the ground. all steel brake lines were extremely rusted. i replaced entire original steel line system with new stainless steel lines at a cost of $596. *js

We were traveling through sheboygan wi towing a 24-foot long fifth wheel rv behind our 1999 silverado. at about 2:00pm on july 9, 2013, we were traveling at about 30mph down a grade on wisconsin highway 23 toward the intersection with i-43 business route, both highways are 4 lanes with left turn lanes and there is traffic light control. when i went to apply the brakes to stop for the red left turn signal, there was almost no brake effect. i was able to rapidly pump the brake pedal enough to stop,but ended up about 5-10 feet into the cross-traffic lane. fortunately, the traffic was light at the time and as a result, no accident occurred. after creeping our units into a parking lot, i checked under the hood, found nothing there, then checked under the vehicle and saw a puddle of brake fluid. by using the emergency brake and traveling slowly, we made it to the chevrolet dealership. they examined the vehicle and reported that several of the brake lines had corroded badly where they exit the central control block of the brake system underneath the truck. they were leaking slowly and at least one of them had finally failed. we had purchased an extended warranty on the vehicle, but, unfortunately, it would not cover part failures due to corrosion. there was nothing in the owners manual addressing the problem of brake line corrosion and the service representatives at the sheboygan chevrolet dealership offered no information. when i discussed the problem with the service department of ed bozarth chevrolet in topeka, they offered no explanation. this cost us $935.66 to repair and very nearly resulted in serious bodily harm to my wife and myself. general motors should have been warning chevy owners about this problem as well as reimbursing those affected. *tr

Brakes failed on my 1999 chevrolet silverado in september of 2012 as i approached a four way intersection. i was unable to stop the truck and went right through the intersection. fortunately, the intersection was in a rural area and there were no other cars around or there would have been no way to have avoided an awful accident. chevrolet dealer said the rear brakes line had failed and fabricated a stainless steel brake line to replace the original. the incident cost me $1500 to replace the brake lines. the silverado had approximately 90,000 miles on it at the time. in another report to the nhtsa, i reported that the front brake lines had failed about five years earlier and resulted in another horrifying inability to stop the silverado. *tr

Brake failure, upon leaving my home i approached hwy62 to make my stop at the end of my street, when i applied the brakes it began to slow then the pedal went to the floor and i was forced to go onto state highway 62 without stopping. i was lucky that no traffic was coming at that moment. as the speed limit on that part of hwy62 is 40mph. i made a slow loop back home. i inspected my vehicle to see burst brake line that was rusted badly near the frame at rear of truck. i had a wrecker tow it to a local shop. then to find out the brake lines were rotted out. $306.93 in repairs. *tr

Truck was taken to dealer for regular maintenance, when raised on the hoist the frame started to collapse and brake. service people pointed out the problem and told me and to consider getting a new truck and advised i probably should not drive this one anywhere as it could brake apart. they stated they haven't seen this in a truck maintained as this one has been. in looking on-line i now see this is a very common problem in 1999 to 2002 silverado's, with 100's of complaints. gm won't talk about it and states any recall has to come from your agency. this is serious, not sure if any injuries are attributed to this (yet) but there surely will be. i can't believe this is not be looked at with the number of on-line complaints and reports. *tr

My truck shut off while driving on the freeway at freeway speeds. i was able to turn the truck back on and headed to a repair shop where i was notified it was the ignition switch which needed to be replaced. there was no warning prior to the incident (no issues with starting or shutting off while in motion). *tr

While approaching a red light at 28mph and pressing the brake, the pedal went completely to the floor and the vehicle did not slow down. i pumped the pedal repeatedly and only slight braking action could be achieved. i went through the intersection just narrowly missing two crossing cars and turned onto a nearby side street. after finally getting the vehicle to stop, i got out and saw a puddle of brake fluid forming a few feet behind the driver side front wheel. further inspection found all break lines severely rusted and a brake line had ruptured just above the frame rail. i did not experience any warning light prior to the failure. i was under the impression that vehicles have two brake systems (fount and rear) and if one failed you still had the other to stop you? i contacted my car dealer and was informed that there was no recall related to ruptured brake lines due to rust or complete failure of a brake system. i was just lucky no one was killed. people driving these vehicles should be contacted and warned!!! after reading report after report of the same thing happening to others driving the 1999 silverado, i can not understand why there has not been a warning sent out to owners and/or a recall!!!!

I was driving to work when i came to a stop sign i applied the brakes and the pedal went to the floor the truck slowed very little i had to pull off the road to avoid hitting the car in front of me. the mechanic replaced one corroded brake line that burst. the truck stopped good for a month. the next incident happened when i went to back out of my driveway i applied the brake and the pedal went to the floor board and it would not stop at all i rolled into the street and rolled to a stop, brake fluid was everywhere another brake line corroded and burst two of my neighbors pushed the truck back in the driveway and it has sat there for last three months hoping for chevy to recall. i called the chevy dealer and explained the problem they told me that was impossible and that the truck is designed to stop even if a brake line fails. they are wrong!!! i guess it will take a bunch of wrongful death lawsuits before they wake up. from what i'm reading from other chevy owners they feel the way i do, losing faith in chevy! i wouldn't be able to sleep at night if i knew people could die using one of my products. after it's repaired i will trade it for a ford truck and still feel guilty whoever buys it may be injured or killed. *tr

Abs activates when stopping at slow speeds, greatly increasing stopping distance. i quoted gm safety bulletin number 05068c to the local dealer, and was told it does not apply to my vin. dealer could not provide info on why my vin is excluded. *tr

I drove my truck earlier in the morning, to run an errand. i returned home, and after about an hour i headed back out. as i was backing out of my driveway, i noticed the brake pedal felt soft. i drove down one house and applied the brake again, and the pedal went to the floor. upon returning to the house, i observed a puddle in the driveway, and upon investigation under the truck, saw fluid had been leaking from corroded lines under the drivers side of the cab. i took my wife's vehicle to work and did some research. i found that this has happened quite a bit to silverado owners. i had the vehicle towed to a local mechanic and am waiting to hear what the bill is going to run. regardless of what the bill runs, i am thankful there were no kids running around in the neighborhood, as it was a school day, and that i was not on i-95 when the brakes failed. this could have ended much worse. the fact that the truck is paid off is only going to keep me from buying a new vehicle, (i'm thinking ford?) for so long if the issues keep up. *tr

I was traveling down hill on a four lane road, two lanes oncoming traffic when a vehicle in front of me brake suddenly. i applied the brakes, but my foot pushed the pedal down to the bottom of its travel. the vehicle slowed down enough that so that i avoided colliding with the vehicle in front of me. with the help of an auto mechanic, it was determined that the brakes failed because the brake lines had completely rusted out. i had all of the brake lines (front and rear) replaced by an independent mechanic. currently the vehicle runs fine but there are some issues with the abs locking up in 4 wheel mode (not sure if the brake line failure is the cause). note: did not report this incident to the authorities because there was no resultant accident. *tr

My home is the last one on a dead end road. when applying the brake to turn into the drive, the driver side brake line burst by the caliper. the truck carried my wife, son and myself into a 200 ft. deep ravine as a result of this. the truck had just been tuned up for a trip to nashville tn. if this would have happened in the mountains, i wouldn't be alive today. after repairing the truck, the passenger side brake line burst as the new brakes were being bled. both calipers needed replaced as well, due to falling apart from rust. bleeder screws completely rusted in half, rubber brake hoses bursting, metal brake lines rusting and springing leaks everywhere, and still no recall? gm should have to pay for these repairs at the very least. i myself, still have to figure out how to deal with my newly fused spine due to this accident. *tr

Started my truck one day and heard a noise i haven't heard before. looked under hood to see where it was coming from and noticed noise was coming from the exhaust manifold. the bolts have broken off leaving the manifold leaking exhaust fumes. came to find out that this is a common but very dangerous problem on chevy trucks. many chevy vehicles have this issue and if not corrected could lead to more engine troubles or worse yet a fire.so now my vehicle is a safety hazard! chevy should recall this safety hazard, which could become dangerous. *tr

Complete and total brake failure, without warning, from burst brake lines caused by rust in the lines from master cylinder to the junction box under driver's seat. i had this problem previously in the brake line from junction box to passenger front wheel two years ago. the previous rupture was in the same area, but not the same spot as this failure. i have kept visual checks for extensive rust on the other lines since then. however this new failure was where the line went through the cab to the frame, out of clear sight and behind inner fender liner. i had backed vehicle and a trailer down boat ramp to recover ski boat. vehicle stopped normally at water edge and boat was loaded. upon applying brakes to take vehicle from park to drive, brake pedal went completely to floorboard. i drove vehicle and boat up the ramp slowly into parking lot where i attempted to stop on flat ground. vehicle rolled to a stop with brake pedal completely on floor. in order to get home, i removed fender liner and made emergency repairs with store bought brake lines and splice connectors. only the line from the firewall side of the master cylinder originally failed, however in attempting to remove that broken line, the front line also had extensive rust and also started leaking. the break in the second line was within an inch of the other break. it appears the driver's side front wheel throws water, salt and debris on all lines where they run down frame through body cavity and along frame rails. most extensive rust is located in plastic clips that stabilize brake lines to the frame. brake lines are vital safety features, not wear items and should not fail for the life of the vehicle, in my opinion. *tr

I started the vehicle, depressed the brake pedal(normal) to shift into a forward gear, subsequently applied the brake pedal, but this time the pedal traveled all the way to the floor. brake efficiency was drastically reduced, but did stop the vehicle after several feet, albeit from a very slow speed. subsequent inspection revealed that all brake lines leading into the abs module, located on the left underside of the vehicle just aft of the driver's door, were severally corroded; one of the lines leading to the module was ruptured. when the brake pedal was depressed, brake fluid streamed from the ruptured line. *js

While driving my 1999 chevrolet silverado on friday, may 10, 2012, at approximately 15 mph, i attempted to stop at a stop sign. the brake pedal went to the floor and i needed the emergency brake to come to a complete stop and return to my residence (fortunately only approximately 1/2 mile away). i was able to get an appointment to have the truck examined at classic chevrolet (approximately one mile away in bellevue, pa) on may 15, 2012. i was then informed all the brake lines needed replaced due to corrosion along with the two front calipers. total cost to me was $1,228.00!

On 3/21/12 i exited my driveway in my 1999 chevrolet silverado pickup and stopped at my mail box to get the morning paper. while stopped with my foot on the brake pedal, the pedal suddenly went to the floor. several pump attempts failed to achieve a firm pedal. upon inspection i noticed a large puddle of fluid under the driverÂ??s side just behind the front wheel. later that evening i had my wife pump the brakes and witnessed a significant stream of brake fluid spewing from a bundle of metal brake lines located on the outside of the frame rail, opposite the abs control module. upon further investigation, i noticed all of the metal brake lines were visibly, and significantly, corroded/rusted. the location of the line rupture was nowhere near a joint, fitting, or line bend. i purchased this truck used in october of 2008 from a chevrolet dealership in danville, indiana with approximately 89,979 miles on it. the body, wheels, and interior are in excellent shape and would lend you to believe that the truck was generally well maintained and regularly garaged. this truck had 101,107 miles at the time of the brake line incident. i've driven the truck 11,128 miles since purchase, it's always stored in a garage. there were no visible leaks or indicators prior to brake line rupture. had i been actually driving on the road, or worse yet towing a trailer or heavy load, this story could have had a significantly more ominous outcome. the internet is full of similar stories to mine. it appears these typesÂ?? incidents are more common than i would have thought. there appears to have been some gm product deficiencies and i believe there should be a mandatory safety recall with restitution being made by gm. something needs to be done about this situation. please act before someone gets killed when their rusty brake lines fail at the wrong time. *tr

While on vacation in the outer banks north carolina the brakes went out on my truck. there was a lot of fluid left under the truck on the drivers side around the beginning of the bed. i was able to see brake fluid squirt out from the brake line when my wife would press on the brake pedal. i was able to get the truck to outer banks chevy for repair. they told me that all of the brake lines were very rusted and needed to be replaced. i had them make the repair for around $1500. on the trip back to my home state the brakes became very soft and caused the return trip to take very long. i needed to take the truck to my local chevy dealer for more repair. the local dealer stated that the original repair was not done correctly and needed to be fixed again. i thought gm would cover the cost because of the fact the original repair was completed at a chevy dealer. that was not the case. i contacted the corporate office and was told after many conversations that the second repair was not covered because the replacement parts were not gm parts. the repair of the brake lines is custom because gm does not make replacement brake lines and a service tech is required to manually bend aftermarket lines. i was required to pay additional money to have the repair completed again and i am now out over $2000. the brakes have been ok since the second repair. *tr

My 1999 chevy silverado z71 had a catastrophic brake failure last night. as i was driving home, i applied the brakes to slow down for my upcoming exit ramp. the pedal went all the way to the floor...maybe had 10% brake performance. luckily, this was later at night, and there was very little traffic. i was able to go through a traffic light that was green. if it had been red, i would have had to go through the intersection, and could have caused an accident. i pulled in to a parking lot after using the emergency brake and shifting to lower gear. i inspected, and all of the brake lines are severely corroded, with one of them having a hole. the fluid was pouring out. all of the brake line will need to be replaced before the truck is operational and safe. i expect gm to make this right. this is an extremely dangerous condition, where inferior materials were used. lives are in danger as a result.

Brake lines on this 1999 chevy silverado lt 1500 4wd z71 have failed 2 times. first in october 2006 with approximately 98,200 miles. all brake lines were replaced at a cost of $1,400, plus the cost of the tow. then again in october 2011 at approximately 173,600 miles. the first occurrence happened in my driveway while pulling out onto the street. fortunately, i was not moving too fast and was able to pull over without incident. the second occurrence happened at speed, approximately 35 mph, as the light turned red and the car in front of me applied his brakes. i applied mine only to have them go straight to the floor. i was able to make an erratic loop around the other vehicle, going through the red light and the intersection. had it not been the middle of the day, with light traffic, i, and any number of other drivers, could have been severely injured or killed as a result of this failure. this vehicle was towed, at my expense, and is presently in the shop being evaluated for needed repairs. two complete brake failures in 12 years or a failure once every 6 years is totally unacceptable. i have been a chevy driver for more than 36 years, however, i no longer trust my vehicle, or any chevy. *tr

Was driving my truck to the carryout when i went to stop and all of sudden there were no brakes and the pedal went right to the floor. never had a warning it was going to happen. i was lucky that the person that didn't have to stop didn't hit me, as they had to slam on their brakes and swerve to avoid me. i am lucky this happened at 2 am in the morning when there wasn't much traffic. i was only able to stop because i ended up hitting the curb and jumping in someone's yard scared me into thing i was going to smash into the house. well the truck came to rest about 10 foot from the porch. i looked under the truck and can see that the lines are rusted really bad under the driver side cab and it looks to be all need replaced. i have never had brake lines rust like this ever and i own several older trucks and they aren't this bad being twice the age of this truck. gm should own up to this problem and do a recall before somebody gets killed if that hasn't happened already. like i can just let my truck sit while this investigation is slowly looked at by officials that don't care if people die by not issuing a recall now. *tr

After exiting the main road, i started a curve and downhill exit which had a traffic light at the end of the exit, which dead ended on to another main road. seeing that the light was turning from yellow to red i started to brake. fortunately for me no traffic was approaching the green light as when i began to brake the pedal went to the floor. as i was attempting to stop,i continued through the red light and onto the opposite shoulder of the road and used my emergency brake and downshifted the trans. once i stopped i checked under my truck and found a ruptured brake line. i managed to get my truck to a service store and had the line replaced. at that time the service provider told me all chevy trucks have bad lines and mine was no different as they were common steel line and he priced replacement of the lines at about $1300.00 give or take.

On my way home from a boy scout meeting, i heard what sounded like an electric motor or pump running continuously and the check abs light was on on my dash board of my 1999 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd extended cab 4x4. the next morning i took it to a brake shop and they tested it on the computer and confirmed that the abs system had failed. if general motors put out a recall for this part, i was never notified and never received any recall notice. i have since found out that the abs systems failure is a common occurrence. so, why no recall? *tr

(1) none (2) instrument panel would go hay-wire. any or all the gauges would be pegged for no reason and then either go dead or start working again. (3) it was "so called repaired" twice under warranty. i was waiting for it to go completely out so they could see what was wrong. it went out for good about 6/20/02. i took it to the dealer and he said it had to be removed and sent back to gm for repair. i got my truck back on 6/28. he told me it would be around 500.00 for the repair. i told him, and he had it on record because i had it "repaired" the 2 times under warranty that i didn't feel that i should have to pay anything because i felt it ws never repaired correctly in the first place. he said the best he could do was charge me around 250.00. i had no choice but to pay because he wouldn't release my truck back to me.....i have found out that there are thousands of complaints about this same problem on alot of other trucks, suv's etc in the gm line. i feel that gm should re-imburse me because i had to pay for a problem they did not fix in the warranty period. *tr

My driver's side seatbelt consistently gets stuck and won't come out. also both my front windows are broken. the mechanism that moves them up and down has broken and they now fall down into the door as a result. there was no accident or incident of any kind to initiate these problems. *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet silverado. when the brakes were applied at 5 mph, the vehicle failed to stop. the contact applied the emergency brake. he noticed an oil spill on the ground. the vehicle was towed to the repair shop and they stated that the metal brake lines were rusted and needed to be replaced. the vin was unknown. the current and failure mileages were 85,000.

Pulling into a gas station with my son from a road with a 45 mph speed limit. slowed down to attempt to park on side of building and about the last 50-75 feet the abs brake system pulsates and brake pedal is slammed down as hard as could and there is absolutely no brakes. truck hits corner of gate damaging bumper,grille,hood and small dent in door from gate. taken to dealership to have recall campaign 05068 looked at and damage accessed. dealership says damage not due to recall campaign. they also state that there are other components that caused crash and i am charged $220.00 to fix these. called chevrolet hot line and of course they do nothing but deny responsibility for products they have problems with. they insult my good faith in them by asking me how tall i am (they probably think that i am a short person and inadvertantly stepped on gas pedal instead of brake).

First incident occurred on june 9, 2006 where the rear brake line failed while pulling boat from remote fishing lake at approximately 10:30 pm, leaving a large amount of brake fluid on the ground and on the right rear tire. no dealers are open at this hour, therefore i had to drive truck with only emergency brake. delivered truck to the dealer during business hours where the rear brake line was replaced due to failure from being corroded through. asked for inspection of all remaining brake lines and have them replaced if required as i did not want the incident to happen again - none were replaced and was informed everything was now fine. 2nd incident occurred december 6, 2006. another brake line along the left side of the frame near the transfer case failed due to severe corrosion. this happened as my wife was returning home and drove to the end of our driveway and when the brakes were applied the pedal went all the way to the floor. our house is located on a hill and the truck went off the drive and headed through the yard down the hill - luckily she placed the transmission in park without an accident or injury. i inspected all of the brakes lines and found that all are severely corroded. if they are touched in any way, large flakes of corrosion come off in you hand. i will not return this vehicle to a gm dealer for repair as i would rather complete the job myself rather than have someone lie to me and jeopardize my families or my life any further! *nm

While attempting to adjust the driver's seat in my 1999 chevrolet silverado pickup truck, i found the seat would not lock in place. moving the seat back and forth in an effort to lock it, something appeared to break causing the seat to move quickly forward, pinning me against the steering wheel. i later found a small plastic fragment on the floor and assumed it was part of the track locking system. the seat now was completely free in its movement forward and backward, extending to the limit in each direction. i took the broken piece to a local dealer who explained that it was, indeed, part of the "seat adjustment" mechanism, and, when broken, the seat would move without restriction forward or backward. when i questioned why such a critical piece of equipment was not made of metal (instead of plastic), i was told that "yes, it should have been." had this failure occurred while driving, it could have caused serious, if not fatal, consequences. once the part breaks, any application of the brakes will immediately slam the driver forward into the steering wheel with considerable force. the opposite effect is also felt when accelerating. i was very fortunate that the part broke before i had left the curb. this is a very dangerous design and system. these parts should be manufactured from hardened steel instead of plastic material (even nylon.) at best the surprised driver is immediately and totally distracted; at worst, he is totally incapable of maintaining control of his vehicle, being slammed forward and backward as he applies braking or acceleration. the cost of repair of this condition is approximately $400. and should not be borne by the consumer. general motors should address the type of material used in the manufacture of these parts for future vehicles, and recall and replace them on older models. note: my vehicle has less than 56k miles. *nm

While having my brakes checked by my mechanic on my 1999 chevrolet silverado a problem was discovered with the gas tank straps. one strap had corroded completely through and was broken and the other strap was also corroded and just about ready to give away also. this left the gas tank hanging down at least 6 to 7 inches if not more. my mechanic has ordered new straps for the gas tank and temporarily wired the gas tank back up to prevent it from falling off the pickup truck while traveling down the highway. i went to the chevy dealership in town . they informed me that this was the first they have ever heard of this happening and there were no recalls that they were aware of. i than called gm to report the situation and file a complaint on it. i explained the entire situation to them including the mechanics name, business address and phone number that they could call for verification of the information. i was concerned that this situation could happen to someone driving down the highway with a full tank of gas unaware of the problem and have their gas tank fall off causing a fire or explosion on the road. when they asked me what i wanted to resolve the situation. i told the lady it would be nice to get reimbursed to have the problem fixed. she said that probably would not happen due to not having a chevy dealer fix the problem and that the vehicle had too many miles on it. i reemphasized the reason for making this call was a safety concern that i had about this possibly causing a serious accident for someone while traveling down the highway. i also stated that this was too new of a vehicle for this type of problem to occur regardless of mileage and that i felt the problem was due to a factory default. it would be great to get reimbursed for having this problem fixed but it would be greater if the information on this factory default got out and possibly saved someone's life. *jb

I have developed a problem with anti-lock brakes with my 1999 chevy ex cab 1500 4x4 and i have tried to have the vehicle repaired as per the recall to no avail ( gm claims my truck is not one of the involved vehicles, but it is doing the same thing as the recalled vehicle is doing!!!!! i contacted gm at chevrolet.com and spoke with a mr. brandon christen file # 1-387148116 and was informed of the above then i received an e-mail from a mr. michael goonan and he also told me that it was not covered!!!!!! i feel that this a gm problem and being that it is doing the same thing as the stated 99 through 05 pickups that this should be repaired by gm!!*jb

Back brakes on my chevy pick up silverado 1999 did not have non corrosive brake line and when i had the two rear tires replaced the line cracked apparently due to salt at the bend going into the rear wheel brake cylinders. due to not having brakes and not wanting to return to dealer i purchased the truck i went to the oakland dealership where i told them to replace both lines as if the one fractured i expected for the other one to go shortly. however they did not replace the line until the brought the lines up to breaking pressure and then fortunately for me the other brake line ruptured. i had to pay for all repairs as my extended warranty did not cover but i argued with the dealer these repairs should have been paid for by gm as the lines did not conform to astm stds and according to the salesman that sold me the vehicle they knew about the brake lines braking and made comment the brake line that goes over the gas tank goes first! i could have been going over the hills to kingwood west virginia when i lost braking and i fell it would have killed me and i feel all chevy trucks around my year model should be recalled that are in areas with winter salt use. i am a registered safety consultant with nhtsa primarily motorcycles. *nm

Have had issues with power loss while driving and lose steering and brakes capabilities. have replaced fuel pump and fuel connectors 2 times and now again having fuel pump problems as the truck again lost power while driving and steering and brakes did not operate, causing me to nearly hit a pedestrian because of this. this is very dangerous. dates of these incident are 12/21/03, 7/13/04 and the latest was 6/5/06. previous repairs were done 12/23/03, 7/13/04 and have not yet brought it in to repair again as last incident happened last night. *jb

1999 chevy silverado pick up parking brake issue. there is currently a safety recall for manual transmission models only. this recall involves replacement of the parking brake shoes and installation of a revised spring clip. why is this not applicable to vehicles with automatic transmissions ?? i realize the parking brake is more critical in a manual transmission vehicle. however, does this make it right to exclude automatic transmission vehicles from such a safety issue?? there is too many occurrences of this safety related problem in numerous model years for it not to be properly addressed by gm as a recall/covered repair! *nm

Anti-lock module unit drained battery, was to expensive to replace so it was disconnected, after researching that it was not to be a safety recall by manufacturer. resulted in brakes being locked up when attempting a curve and vehicle rolling over. *jb

Front hub/bearing assembly and wheel speed sensor not working when vehicle is traveling between 3 and 10 mph and brakes are applied. the abs is activating causing one wheel to continue and speed higher than other preventing safe turning and stopping of vehicle. the truck had this problem upon purchase, and dealer attempted to fix. approximately 3 months later vehicle began doing same thing. this was a recall, and was taken to dealer to be repaired. dealer only cleaned the area. chevrolet was called by me and dealer and refused to replace hub, so vehicle is still doing same thing. representative from chevrolet on phone was rude, and replied that all that was covered under recall was cleaning hub. however the recall notice clearly states "in some cases, the front wheel speed sensor may need to be replaced." it also states "this service will be performed at no charge to you." i received recall notice in mail, and took immediately to dealer only to have problem keep occurring and chevrolet refuse to fix it. this problem poses a danger and could cause a crash because of failure to stop. *jb

My cable snapped and the tailgate of my 1999 chevy silverado when loading firewood. i also bent the hinge. i understand there is a recall on this. when i called about it i was told my truck/vin# was not included in the recall. if gmc has identified a problem they should not eliminate some trucks. *jb

The problem occurred suddenly when i noticed a constant humming noise coming from under the driver's side door. i also noticed the abs and brake lights were on. i called craig smith auto group, a chevy dealership. the tech that inspected my truck said there was a problem with the abs module & motor and both needed replaced. he quoted me a price of $2856.00 for the repair. i asked if it would be covered under my extended warranty & he said it was not covered. so as a temporary fix so the battery would not go dead, he pulled the abs fuse. still as of today, the part has not been replaced because of the high cost. i also did research online & found many complaints with the same issue happening. *jb

While driving a 1999 chevrolet silverado applied the brake a little quicker than normal and felt the pedal go to the floor. as i started to press on the brake the brake line ruptured and caused lack of pressure and no fluid to engage the calipers and start the braking action. i quickly avoided hitting the car in front of me and quickly diverted to the shoulder of the highway were i met the jersey wall barrier and produced cosmetic damage to the vehicle. according to a chevrolet dealership i have to replace all of the brake lines because of excessive wear, i purchased the vehicle 5 months ago from a different dealership within the local area. my cost is almost half of what i paid for the vehicle, and that is just for the brake lines, not to include the damage i received to the side of my vehicle. i have been informed from the service advisor that this is not a common maintenance aspect, however it could happen and this leaves any driver the inability to have control of braking power of their vehicle. at this time i have not authorized repairs because of the overwhelming cost to replace the brake lines. they do need to be replaced and i am currently seeking additional cost estimates from other various maintenance facilities to correct this repair. *jb

Abs control module faliure, taken to dealer, said $1,200 to fix. i see alot of people are having the same problem. gm should address this issue. this causes and extremely dangerous situation in heavy, slow moving traffic. the truck will not stop. how many injuries, or worse yet, deaths must occur before gm address's this very dangerous situation?? *nm

I have a 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500 truck . if i hit a bump in the road the abs goes crazy and the truck will not stop. i replaced brake pads, rotors and calipers several times and my odometer reading is now at 69, 520 miles. the truck simply will not stop and i have rolled on through intersections and other places i could not stop. when gm issued a recall on the speed sensor i contacted them to reimburse me the $900 that i have spent trying to make my truck safe. they informed me brakes were not covered under warranty even though i have had 99% of the brake work performed at the gm dealership, hewitt motors. they said "sorry, we cannot help you." i think it is really excessive that i should have to pay that much money in such little mileage for the brakes. and i see from your other complaints it is definitely a major problem that gm needs to address. we really like the truck but the brakes are just not safe!! *jb

Consumer 1999 silverado developed corrosion between the front hub/bearing assembly and the wheel speed sensor. *ts the consumer received recall 05v379000. in september 2003 the consumer had to replaced the front an rear brake rotors and pads with less than 17000 miles. the consumer was told then that the cause was excessive corrosion. the consumer contacted gm at that time but they offered no assistance. when the consumer received the current recall he submitted the invoice to the manufacturer. they refused to reimburse the consumer stating the work done was not covered by the recall. *nm

Abs brakes fail at low speeds, making it impossible to stop. took it to the dealer (2-20-2006) with a recall relating to the abs brake system, and was told the recall didn't cover the problem with the truck. i was told if i had $1,100 to replace the ebcm motor relay circuit, that would solve the problem. i have found with only minimal research, there's a lot of folks out there with the same truck, or similar trucks having the same problem. this is an extremely dangerous situation in heavy traffic, the truck will not stop!! i have had to remove the abs fuse, and completely disable the abs system, in order to make this vehicle safe to drive. *jb

The head gasket on the motor leaks antifreeze. this has been noted several times on vehicles that use the extended life antifreeze. the cost to fix the problem is not cheap due to the cost of labor required to remove the head from the motor and replace with new seal. *nm

Driving on the road and the abs control module came on and would not stop, even if truck is off and the key removed from it. the only way to stop the module from working is to remove the electrical wiring from it. *jb

My problem is similar to the problems that i have read about related to nhtsa recall campaigns 05v379000 . at slow speed abs will activated, but the truck with not stop. this truck was not included in the recall which seemed weird since it had the same problems as described in the recall, and i live in a state which has salt on the roads almost half of the year. when i brought truck in to the chevrolet dealer, who stated that they needed to replace the entire hub assembly for both the right and left. to fully fix the problem they could not simply apply a rust inhibitor as the recall above suggested. i did some internet research and found that other consumers experienced the same problem. many who brought their trucks in under the recall also had to have the hub assembly replaced. the two crashes this problem caused included the vehicle running in to a tree in a parking lot and a tool chest in garage. i have been fortunate enough not to have run anyone over because of this problem.*ak

1999 chevy silverado electronic brake control module has a defect that involves a relay inside the ebcm that sticks and will eventually cause it to stop working. *ts the consumer stated a technical service bulletin had been issued and what was recommended for fixing the problem, however the consumer had the work and it didn't correct the problem. in doing some research it was discovered that the problem for the abs failure is with the ebcm itself. the consumer stated the only way to fix the problem was is to replace the ebcm, but the dealership have been instructed not to replace it. *jb

Fuel gauge works off and on mostly off. i purchased truck in spring of 2002 and problem started immediately after purchase , so i am guessing that the dealer knew of the problem just got lucky that i didn't notice till after the deal was done . have talked to several people with chevrolet trucks all years within 1999 through 2004 and all have had the same problem. and i have talked to several dealers and was told it would cost upwards of 600 hundred dollars to repair. sounds to me as there is definitely a problem and it isn't the car owner's that are at fault. there should be a recall on this problem. *nm

I bought my 1999 checy silverado new. the brakes were never as good as the vehicle i had traded in or in fact drove at work for my employer. i took my vehicle back to the dealer, mckee auto several times. the service advisors would not log my complaint or attempt to repair the vehicle. i have run several stoplights because of the lousy brakes, luckily there haven't been any accidents. last october the rear brakes went out on this vehicle. i replaced the rear pads and rotors while the front brakes look the same as new. this leads me to believe maybe they aren't hardly being used. i thought there was supposed to have been a recall for early models of this vehicle, but was never notified. *nm

The abs light came on and did not go off. when i turned off vehicle at two different locations, there was something "still running". i immediately took it to my mechanic who advised system had to be replaced or battery would run down and there was a likely possibilty of an accident occuring as brakes would not be operating properly. this vehicle only had 40,000 miles on it and regular maintenance has been maintained. this was a major expense ($1078.35) plus a car rental was required as this is my only means of transportation. *nm

I purchased a used 1999 chevrolet silverado 4wd in july and around sept of this year i had trouble breaking in low mph situations such as stop signs, lights and in parking situations where the abs would trigger on dry clean pavement causing many close calls where i almost rear ended vehicles or ran into buildings ect. there is a recall on this particular problem in "salt using states" which ironically does not include wisconsin or minnesota. the recall# is 05068 regarding wheel speed sensors in years 99 thru 02 models. *jb

I woke up to a dead battery yesterday on my 1999 z71 silverado. i jumped the vehicle and drove to the local auto parts store to replace the battery since it was the original and i did not want to get stranded in 0 degree weather. in route, my abs light came on and a loud motor sound came from under the vehicle. this noise did not cease once i turned the vehicle off. i replaced the battery & drove to my dealer. he opened the hood and pulled the abs fuse and said "you can fix it this way or the expensive way for $1500." i plan on keeping the vehicle for a couple more years and drive three small children in this vehicle so safety is of my utmost concern. the dealer replaced the ecbm for over $1100. there are many complaints on this site as well as numerous other forums. this is not an isolated problem. gm needs to do the right thing and issue at least a recall to inspect these units as they are in an area on the vehicle that is subject to road debris & corrosion. and ultimately reimburse any silverado owners for expenses incurred to replace this unit. how many complaints does it take to get an action out of chevrolet? hopefully they respond before someone gets hurt. *jb

Gm's safety recall "05068 - front wheel speed sensor corrosion" failed to correct the low speed abs activation problem on my 1999 chevrolet silverado truck. the gm dealer followed the gm recall bulletin instructions, and even replaced both front wheel speed sensors. after the work was complete, there was no change to the problem where the abs activates every time i apply the brakes and the vehicle is about to come to a stop. the gm dealer said there was nothing more they were approved to do on the vehicle beyond what they had already done. *nm

Parking break wore out prematurely. dealer said the noise i heard was from something else. took truck back several times to no avail. finally, dealer said i had been driving around with parking brake on. not true, can't drive 1999 silverado with parking brake on and not notice; bell rings. *nm

Took truck to have brakes done on all four wheels. (could not stop but was able to steer around trouble, was reason for doing this) rear brakes and pads had to be replaced, they could not cut the rotors due to rust. i have never seen this condition in forty five years of working on cars or trucks, the rust ate away the pads to 1/3 their size. this condition should not have happened. i can see changing rotors because of heat or metal on metal, not from rust. i have the parts that have been replaced. the front rotors and pads did not need to be replaced. this happened in less than 5,000 miles as i had a new york emissions and safety inspection and it passed both. *jb

Within 3 weeks of having the recall on the front wheel sensors completed, the ecbm on the abs system failed requiring its replacement. the abs pump ran constantly after this failure and would have run the battery down or runied the pump had i not know to pull the 60a abs fuse. the pump is not rated for contiuous duty. *nm

While braking at low speeds, maining decreasing from about 7mph to 5 mph the anti-lock brakes activate. when it activates, you have no brakes and it has almost caused several accidents. this has been happening for about a year now. several people in my area are having the same problems with different years models also. this occurs every time you apply the brakes while coming to a stop. *nm

The anti lock brakes locked up while moving at a very slow speed 3- 10 mph as note in gm's recall # 05v379000. this recall only recognized the rust belt states. my truck on several occasions as i was coming to a stop light the anti- lock brakes would activate and have come close several times with swerving off the road to avoid having a collision with another vehicle. this caused one time to run up on the curb and almost hit a light post. my truck was brought to les schuab tire center and they could not find anything wrong with the abs system because no codes flashed. problem is still not fixed. *jb

Abs module has failed at 66,500 miles. the abs module stays running with the engine turned off. the power cable has to be unplugged at the abs module under the driver side door to turn it off. i have discovered that this is a common problem by browsing the internet. also, this part is heavily stocked by parts distributors because of this common failure. it has not been fixed yet but will cost over $900 to replace this abs module. *nm

I took my 1999 chevrolet 1500 series pickup to a local dealer to get the recall on the front speed sensors fixed. the anti-lock brakes were activating every time i tried to stop the vehicle. they said they serviced the truck but when i picked it up the problem persisted. i took it back a second time and they told me that the right front hub assembly was bad. i took the truck to the mecanic i normally use and he put the hub in, the problem still persisted. i called general motors to report that the dealership didn't fix the problem, then told me to replace a part that wasn't defective. they did nothing, now i have a truck that i make a monthly payment on and is unsafe to drive as it will not stop. *nm

1999 chevy, abs activates at low speeds ever since i bought the truck used in ny 2 years ago. when the problem started it was hit and miss, but now it happens all the time at low braking speeds. i have replaced 1 low speed sensor that did not help, so i removed the abs fuse. gm said that my problem fits the recall #05068, but i was not the original owner and live in nc that i was not going to be included in the recall. i feel that this recall should include all vehicles that have been titled in the "salt belt" states regardless of where they are now and who owns them. *nm

I have been having trouble with the brakes on my pickup truck causing my truck to want to go into a spin when i try to stop. the truck pulls to either the left or right when slowing to a stop. i brought it to the dealer to have the problem checked out and they told me the brakes just needed cleaning. the problem continued after the cleaning and recently i noticed the abs system kicking in also. i heard about a recall involving 1999 vintage gm pickup trucks having a problem with the abs brakes so i inquired with gm about the recall. i was told that there were no recalls on my vehicle; a 1999 chevy silverado 3500. i also read a couple of news articles that said gm wasn't finding enough evidence here in the us to justify a recall on these vehicles. i haven't had an accident caused by this yet and i hope that i don't but winter is coming and the likelihood will increase due to the driving conditions.*jb

A recall was issued re: unwanted low speed activation of the abs. prior to the recall i had already had the problem fixed and requested reimbursement after the recall was issued. i was advised that my truck was not included in the recall based solely on the fact that it is currently registered in maryland and not registered in the specific states listed. this truck was purchased brand new in pa and was registered in pa, then oh exclusively until feb. 04 when the truck was registered in maryland as a result of a relocation from ohio. i am simply stunned that gm is excluding me from the recall. this is unacceptable and bottom of the barrel customer service

Driver & passenger power seats slope forward and back at start & stop 3/8 to 1/2 inch. this causes erratic operation of accelerator & brake. also seat belts are anchored within seat base. i feel this would give me a flying start in event of a crash. vehicle has only 68000 miles. feels unsafe. *jb

In reference to gm recall no. 05068 involving several gm model trucks and suv's antilock brake issues at low speeds. i own a 1999 silverado and have this problem. it is extremely dangerous! gm should be taking immediate action, not two months from now! i have had too many very close calls and my wife refuses to drive the truck. a second independent investigation may be warranted to determine why vehicles do not stop when "antilock braking systems" are engaged! i have had close calls with my gm truck and gm lumina car with antilock braking system not providing braking when needed. one such occurrence on winter roads in my gm lumina nearly killed my entire family of five! the failure is the gm antilock braking systems can reduce or eliminate the ability to stop or slow down to safely control the vehicle and prevent an accident. i don't know what i can do about it except remove the antilock braking system fuse. *nm

I have had to replace tailgate cable twice on my 1999 silverado. i have been informed that there is a recall on 2000 and later silverado's. mine is the new body style which is identical to the 2000 and later models. something is not right here. this is a safety hazard. *jb

Went to leave for work this morning only to find that my abs light had come on and that my abs pump was running continuously, upon hearing this all i knew to do is to pull the fuse under the hood to stop it. once at work i find that this is a major problem with a lot of chevy trucks and that gm was not planning on doing something about it? this is an outrage, why wouldn't they own up to the mistake of the abs module failing? this would be considered in my eye a serious matter. what if this had happened to me driving down the road and had to hit the brakes to avoid a crash or worse a child crossing the road? abs would have failed!!! gm really needs to own up to this, from all the posts i have seen on the net from thousands of truck owners are they even listening? *jb

Dt: the contact states he was working on a vehicle in customer car shop in miami. he was taking the doors off when within 15 minutes to a 1/2 hour he smelled smoke. the whole dashboard underneath the steering wheel was on fire. everything under the hood caught on fire. the fire spread from the dashboard to the back of the car. the fire department seem to think it was electrical. the whole shop burned down because of the vehicle fire. the fire department was called. two fire marshals came and they questioned the wiring. the police department was also called. this happened on 9-22-05.*ak

I was pulling into a parking spot at a local store in crandon, wisconsin. the abs system on the truck started pulsating and never stopped until i hit the car in the parking spot in front of me, which resulted in a crash. the problem was corrected when i took it to the dealer for repair the next day in rhinelander. they said the abs sensors where corroded and need either replacement or cleaning, which is what the dealer did.*jb

My abs brakes are not working correctly on my 1999 chevy silverado 1500. when i try to stop the abs causes the brake pedal to "push" back at me and does not allow me to fully stop in a safe distance. i took the vehicle to the dealer for repairs and the entire wheel assemble was cleaned to remove rust from the hub. they say that is causing the abs sensor to send false readings. yet they say it is not going to be a recall issue because it only has been reported by a few people. well i am now reporting this in hopes of a more permanent solution such as a recall. i read that they recalled the trucks in canada but not here. this is a huge safety issue. it has happened to me going as slow as 5 mph and as fast as 40 mph. it is only a matter of time before someone is really hurt. i have no confidence in my trucks ability to stop now. *jb

One and 1/2 years ago on february 13, 2004, the abs system sounded an alarm, and i removed the 60 amp fuse that controls the abs system. when i returned home, i made contact with ressler's chevrolet of mandan, nd, and they indicated to me it was the control module, and it would cost over $800 to repair. i still had brakes, and they continue to work to this day. the abs system remains off although my brake light and abs light are both on. at this cost i was not about to repair such a costly item on my own. i feel there should be a recall on this item, because it is a mandated safety product. at this time i have over 124k miles on my 99 silverado. i am aware of a recall on a wheel sensor corrosion problem on this type of vehicle, but that it would not apply to a vehicle in north dakota. to me this makes absolutely no sense, because i do travel out of the state, and there is a lot of salt used the streets of bismarck nd. *nm

I have a 1999 silverado extended cab truck. starting about three years ago i noticed that the anti-lock brakes would engage when driving at slow speeds and going over a bump...with my foot on the brake pedal. when this occurs, it seems as if i have no stopping power at all. i have not had an accident, but i have certainly come close. because of this, i am very careful when applying brakes in a bumpy area. as you can see, i live in south carolina. however i am from wisconsin and have made monthly trips over the last three years, lasting 7-14 days, due to the illness of my mother. my truck has been subjected to salt covered roads on many occasions. i understand that the recall gm has agreed to only affects northern states. it is my hope that you will re-think this recall and take into consideration that people do travel with their vehicles. by the way, we do use salt in south carolina as well. *nm

Nhtsa campaign id number : 05v379000 according to this recall, the abs sensor can give false readings due to dirt and grim build up. gm's response for corrective action is to clean the sensor. what happens once the sensor is dirty again?i don't see how this could be a corrective action, because the chance of it happening again is great. my father owned this truck before me and had the same problem i am now having the abs engaging at low speeds, (i almost crashed twice, because of this). my father had the dealer repair the truck and at that time the service manager told my dad the only way to fix it was replace the hubs. the truck was under warranty so the service manager put down that the hubs were bad so my dad would not have to incur the cost. (sensor is warranty item, hubs are not). (country club chevrolet oneonta, ny) once again my father was told the sensor can not be replaced with out changing the hubs. i have also been told this by two other dealers. (norris chevrolet westfield , nj- sullivan chevrolet rosepark, nj). the hubs were replaced at 60,000 miles, at 72,000 the problem once again returned. so this has been a problem for about 7 months, i know when driving the truck to give myself extra stopping distance, it does not always do it mostly after sharp turns (pulling in drive way or parking lot). so if the hubs have to be replaced as per three dealers, so why does the recall corrective action take about removing sensor and cleaning (see following) dealers are to remove the wheel speed sensor and thoroughly clean the wheel speed sensor mounting surface on the bearing, apply rust inhibitor to the cleaned surface, grease the mounting surface, reinstall the wheel speed sensor, and check the peak-to-peak output voltage to ensure the wheel speed signal is within specifications. i think gm needs to resolve the issue not just apply a temporary fix. regards philip j savarese. *nm

Dt: the caller had galvanized support cable for the tailgate brake. there was a recall on the year after and she felt it should include her vehicle. . dealer said it was the same part as in the recall. manufacturer offered no help.*ak

The abs module in my truck failed at ~85,000 miles. the motor wouldn't stop running. from what i've seen in my research this is a common complaint. the worst part is that the repair cost $1,000! i feel this is a defect in manufacturing, or a poor placement of the unit, as it is totally exposed on the frame-rail. *nm

My trucks parking brake system has been inoperative since 15,000 miles. i have never driven with the brake on and never used the brake in an inappropriate way. i see that there is a recall for trucks like mine with manual transmissions. i feel this is unfair to owner of automatic transmission vehicle. the transmission type should have nothing to do with the parking brake. i have read several other complaints of owners with the same problem as mine.... no holding power when parking brake is applied. the repair cost is very high, and i hate to spend the money if it will only last another 15,000 miles! *nm

Throttle body sticking on 1999 chevy silverado... i previously reported a sticking throttle body on my truck when it was new. it stuck at the idle position and took considerable effort to get it to "unstick". the dealer replaced the throttle body claiming the original had a bur, that caused it to stick. now, several thousand miles later, the new throttle body is exhibiting the same behavior. it seems obvious that i didn't have one defective throttle body, but all throttle bodys at the time had a defect. i know that there are many similar complaints. i do not want to pay to replace what gm knows is defective. please look into this matter further....*nm

Dt: the consumer stated the brakes failed at low speed, less than 20 mph. this was an intermittent problem. the vehicle had been taken to the dealership, the first time they said it was due to rust on the rotors. they replaced the rotors, but that did not fix the problem. the bearing hub assembly was replaced, the problem ceased for about a year. the bearing hub assembly hwas been replaced three times. the problem recurred. there was no accident. *ak

Cables used to support tailgate suddenly snapped while 2 average adult males were sitting on the gate. upon inspection it was noted that the cables appeared to be rusted and corroded inside the protective coating. *nm

At 49000 miles abs control module would not shut off requiring replacement.

Placing a 150 pound load on the tailgate caused the cables to break. these exact same faulty cables are included in a recall for 2000 through 2004 trucks, but for some reason, not the same model of 1999 truck. *jb

1999 chevrolet silverado developed braking problems.*mr the consumer had difficulty stopping the vehicle without excessive pedal pressure, shaking, chattering, growling and other miscellaneous strange noises. the consumer was informed the rear rotors needed to be replaced because of corrosion and delamination. *jb

Anti-lock brakes turning on and off by themselves, anti-lock motor continued to run after taking key out of vehicle, went to g.m. garage they said, 1500 to 3000 dollars to fix( i said yeah right!) i then pulled the relay switch under the hood eliminating the anti-system all together. now dash lights stay on but i don't have braking problems. this all happened at 40,000 miles i now have 65000 on truck. way to stand behind product gm thanks a lot! for nothing! *nm

Dt: the vehicle is a 1999 chevrolet silverado. every time the consumer comes to a slow stop the abs brakes come on when they are not suppose to. do so. consumer states abs will come on when driving 5 mph. consumer feels abs brakes should not be coming on in these conditions, like when the roads are dry. the consumer is almost unable to get the vehicle to stop quickly enough to keep from hitting anything else. consumer has disabled the abs by pulling the fuse. he states that it has not missed with any other part of the vehicle. the brakes work fine now, and the other components with it. in 2002, the abs part had been replaced. he believes it was because of the control unit. the problem at that time was that the abs would not turn off. this is the only problem with the vehicle. he has not taken it to the dealer or the manufacturer. consume r states there has been a recall in canada concerning this problem. the dealership he purchased it from is out of business. *ak

I own a 1999 chevy silverado. the abs sensor went bad and i was told it would be $1000 to fix this. outrageous! i did more research and found that this problem is common and gm is doing nothing about it. i read that they recalled all trucks with same problem in canada, but not here. this is a safety concern because my abs does not work, and the abs motor runs, which is a fire concern. next, with winter driving coming soon, this is a major concern to not have abs. this problem should be recalled and fixed at gm's expense. *jb

My father father-in-law is a certified mechanic and was doing some work on my 1999 silverado and noticed that the abs motor was continually running. to stop this he had to pull the fuse. i recently drove my truck from minnesota to california and on numberous ocassions i had trouble stopping. i had to push the brakes all the way to the floor and the truck still was slow to react. most of the time there was no one in front of me, but there were a couple times when i almost rear ended someone. i haven't done anything to correct the problem because i live in overseas. the truck is left in minnesota and i drive it whenever i am home for vacation. once i move home next year i will have to do something to fix this problem if chevy hasn't sent out a recall. how many stories like this does it take for chevrolet to do something about it? how many complaints have to be submitted about an abs motor that won't stop running unless the fuse is pulled? i sure hope chevy does something soon.

Emergency brake failed three times. the consumer contacted the manufacturer. *nm while driving consumer tried to down shift and the vehicle would not go into gear. the brakes locked up and the anti-lock braking system did not work. the emergency brakes also failed to work causing the driver to hit a tree. the driver or passenger side air bag did deployed. the driver's seat ejected off of the floor with the driver strapped into the seat. the vehicle had caught on fire upon the side impact. consumer has had trouble shifting threes times previously and the transmission along with the clutch had been replaced once before. *tt *sb

Dt: consumer says this problem is being investigated by nhtsa. consumer has 1999 a chevrolet silverado and is experiencing problems at low speed with the abs. the investigation is nhtsa action number pe05020. on several occasions, the consumer says that he has been lucky to avoid accidents when traveling at low speeds. the problem seems to increase the stopping distance. consumer has now disabled the abs due to the fear of the malfunction of the abs. the consumer says that road conditions doesn'tt seem to matter, wet, dry, cold, or hot the abs caused the vehicle to take an extreme amount of distance to stop. consumer received an estimate on repairing the problem. it was 800 dollars for parts alone. *jb

Dt: the back brakes and back braking plate has rotted out. the consumer noticed the problem when changing the rear brakes and rotors. the plate that everything bolts to is rotted and has holes in it. the dealership did not give any information on why this happened. on may 20, 2005 the vehicle was taken to the dealership the consumer stated he noticed the problem approximately one week prior. *jb

When brakes are applied at low speed the abs pulsates,and brakes must be applied in full brake lock to stop vehicle.

Dt: on july 3 2005 while driving the vehicle lost power steering and driver had a hard time steering. had to use two hands to steer. there was no warning from the vehicle that a problem would occur. vehicle was taken to the dealership, and owner was informed that it would cost $700 to replace steering pump.*ak

Dt: consumer states that the overdrive and reverse gears completely went out. had vehicle towed. they repaired the transmission at that time. the same thing occurred again, but it caused more damage. consumer was going to have the transmission replaced.*ak *sb

Abs failure in my 1999 chevrolet silverado, abs motor runs constantly weather truck is running or not. pulled 60amp fuse to stop motor, so now this vehicle has no antilock brakes

I have a 1999 chevy silverado that has been diagnosed with piston slap. this all started shortly after i purchased the vehicle in 1999. however, the dealer refused to fix it, stating that it is normal noise. (normal? then why didn't the engine make this noise when i first drove it off the lot)? i continued asking the dealer about the noise but they continued to say that it was normal noise. finally, i took the vehicle to another gm dealer on april, 2004. the vehicle had 48,799 miles. i asked the mechanic and service representative to listen to the engine, both determined the noise was not normal, and needed repaired. they performed numerous engine repairs that seemed, at that time, to make the noise go away. in june, 2004, the vehicle now had 49,023 miles, the noise had returned, and the gm dealer again stated the noise was not normal. they then replaced the long block of the engine, that seemed to have taken care of the problem. as of this date, the vehicle is back at the gm dealership with the same engine noise, which is a loud ticking/knocking noise. i am, again, being told is "normal" for this engine. (this is statement is being quoted by general motors, as being "normal". initially, when i recently took the vehicle to the gm dealership, the service technicians indicated the noise was not normal...until the engineers at general motors conveyed the noise as being "normal".)

At low speeds the antilock brakes on my 1999 chevy silverado (4x4) activates for no apparent reason and almost resulted in an accident. the brakes continue to be unpredictable at low speeds. a garage said they had multiple inquiries about this and knew of the problem well. i think this is a recall item and gm should resolve the issue. incident date is approximate first occurence.

When applying the brake at speeds under 10 mph i will hear the anti lock brakes turn on and then the brake pedal cannot be depressed and the vehicle will roll another 5-10 feet further then intended. this has happend to at least 6 other people that i know with the same type of vehicle. one of them a sheriff's department vehicle.

Tailgate cable broke completly while loading a mower, damaging my tailgate and inner bed hinges as well as the outer hinge on the tailgate itself. i noticed that the 2000 and up models were recalled but, mine was not a part of the recall. my model is exact to the ones currently recalled because it was the first year of the new style change-over. i would appreciate some investigation and/or feedback. thank you, mike ireland

There has been a failure by breakage in one of the tailgate support cables, which completely fractured after corrosion. as a result of this happening i observed the second support cable, and see it is weakened by corrision, and will fracture the same way. this breakage occurred after opening the truck tailgate, and fortunately occurred before i was going to jump into the box of the truck. breakage of the second cable will result in the tailgate dropping off, causing possible injury.

Parking brake on my truck wore out prematurely causing vehicle to fail texas safety inspection. truck is a 1999 chevrolet silverado and had less than 65,000 miles on it at the time of the failed safety inspection. parking brake shoes were replaced at a cost of about $200. a recall has been issued by chevrolet, but it is only for the manual transmission vehicles, not the automatic transmission. recall number for manuals was 05v161000

Dt:consumer has 1999 chevrolet silverado. vehicle does not stop at slow speed, when applying brakes vehicle makes a terrible clanking or grinding noise. consumer noticed this in february. consumer said that she heard of recall by gm in march, and checked her vehicle to find no recalls. consumer contacted gm, and was told that problem was her responsibility. *ak

Tailgate cable on my 1999 chevy silverado snapped. appears to be correded. there is a active recall for this same issue for 2000-2004 silverado's but not for the 1999 model. no damage to vehicle or injuries.

Dt: abs brakes went out 20,000 miles and this again occurred at 45,000 miles. this occurred at low speeds but happened once at high speed on the highway. took to dealer for repairs and they said that simply the abs was out and needed to be replaced. consumer saw report where gm was recalling canadian vehicles due to the salt conditions and its affect on the abs system. owner feels his vehicle should be recalled because his state uses the same salt used in canada. *tt

I bought this truck in ohio for my wife [xxx], she reported that the abs brake would simply not work on accasion and the pedal would go straight to the floor .we took the vehicle in to the dealer but he could not find the problem . at lows speeds i was able to reproduce the problem. dealers down here say the sensor is bad. we pulled the fuse to disable the brakes when the vehicle was new because a delphi engineer told me that would at least keep the brakes working . i have 58000 miles on my truck and we have replaced the calipers the rotors and even some of the brake lines have rusted rupturing and causing a loss of brakes. the power steering hose line rusted at the cooler radiator. . yesterday the chevy dealer in gainseville called me to the shop to see how the frame is being eaten away , i believe the vehicle either wasn't proberly prepared when built or the protective paints and coating were deffective. the records at jim douglas chevolet evidence the expenses we have incuured to keep the truck operational. the abs module and the loss of break lines seem to relflect extemely poor metal coorosion resistance , even both my tailgate cable rusted and broke .each time i have taken in to the chevy dealer for repair they are amazed at the corrosion problems. even the tire jack in the passenger compartment was rusted and it was never used. the screws inside the center console were rusted. i spent between 2500.00 and 3000.00 in just the brake problem and that is without trying to fix the defective sensor module. i assure absent a forced recall i suspect gm will not fix this problem. gm conumer relatios suggested i get a recall number and maybe they could be of further assistance. thus i am send you my complaint. sincerely [xxx] . our vin is [xxx] our model is ck15753 the car was assembled at fort wayne. june 6,1999. note i selected 25 failures as an estimated of failed componets in the unrecarrage including the brakes and the abs module. *js information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

We have taken very good care of our vehicles, because we try to maximize their lives. one day, the "brakes" light came on. i contacted my chevrolet dealer, who checked it out, then told me "you are better off just driving with it the way it is." when i asked why, i was told that gm has a problem with the abs systems going whacky, but will not do anything. i made several calls to gm, trying to plead my case and listing the several others and web sites created by some of them, that have had this same problem. i was coldly told that there had to be large numbers of people having this problem, like millions. this is a safety device that buyers have no choice whether to have or not, but it is not backed by the manufacturer! it is ridiculous!!!

Anti-lock brakes engage at low speed braking. the sensors have been cleaned twice, and the abs module has been replaced. total cost for these is $1,100.00.

Dt: abs motor was running all the time. consumer took vehicle to local mechanic, and was told abs valve along with the control valve were bad. the parts were replaced, and had no problems since. *ak mechanic contacted gm and was told the 1999 models were too old to qualify for repair assistance despite low mileage. consumer therefore had repair done locally, replacing abs pump and valve control at cost of $995, of which $825 were parts.*sb *nm

Driving with family abs light came on. when shutting down the engine, a pump noise continued. the pump continued to run and drained our battery leaving my family stranded. tow truck mechanic, disconnected the pump, jump started our battery, and we brought the truck to the chevy dealer. dealer said it was the abs module and would cost $1100 to repair! researched the internet and found there were many complaints about this problem.

Abs pump on my truck will not turn off and without abs the brake system could lock and injure many people. they should recall this before someone gets hurt

Gm/chevrolet light truck abs activates at slow speeds. at approximately 5 mph, when the brakes are applied, the abs activates (audible) and diminishes braking requiring increased pedal pressure and increased stopping distance.

The abs system will turn on around 5 mph every time i try to stop . it has been getting worse as time goes on .

Dt: since 12,000 miles the abs was disconnected by dealer because brakes were not working properly. they failed to activate at low speeds. there was extended stopping distance along with vibration. abs was disconnected due to this problem. the vehicle is now driven with manual brakes only-no abs due to the faulty situation they provided, unable to drive safely due to the abs. *ak

Dt: abs enables itself when coming to a low speed stop. the abs makes it hard to stop when it is enabled. no accidents. no repairs. a few close calls with almost hitting vehicles. *ak

Dirivers side seat failed to stay locked in position and slid forward when brake was applied. this cause me to be thrown foreward with all my weight on the brake petal. if not for the seat belt and no one following close behind it could have been very serious.

Increased stopping distance when brakes applied under 10 mph and abs fails...my vehicle slammed into a cement pole in parking space causing $1600 damage...original dealership refused to accept responsibility as vehicle was in their repair shop the very day before for exact complaint and was not addressed...second dealership immediately knew the problem and corrected the problem by replacing front speed sensors.

Brake anti lock motor runs continuously had to disconnect motor. now there is no antilock protection for brakes

Dt: driver's side safety belt will not extend so it can be used. will not come out of the reel. the other concern were the abs brakes. had situations while in traffic the abs activated on their own. this removes control from the driver, and is startling when it happens. there is a vibration from the abs. tried to corrrespond with gm, but feot concerns have fallen on deaf ears. no repair has been made as of yet. the seat belt began to fail on 1-1-03, and the abs system began to malfunction on 2-10-05. *ak

Abs module failed on my 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500 ext. cab truck. the module stuck and kept abs running till i unpluged fuse. luckly there was no accdent. but i checked with my dealer" no recall " said they had replaced lots of these module. so i had to have them replace at a cost of $923.00. guest that is why chevrolet has not recalled!!!!

Traveling at slow speeds, the brakes would not work (anti-lock activating) causing long stopping distance or had to stomp brake peddle several times to get vehicle to stop. no major accidents but second time i ran over sidewalk i took car to service center (not dealer) and they disconnected anti-lock brakes and have not had any further trouble. mechanic said the brake sensors (speed sensors?) would need to be replaced.

A client of mine, mr. herman katzel, sustained neck injuries when the tailgate straps of his 1999 chevy silverado 1500, 33d ext cab failed.

Consumer states: cruise control and toll haul didn't work correctly, when turned off cruise control did not operate properly, it kept accelerating when touching brakes. the toll haul command was telling the truck to down shift.*ak *tt

I have a 1999 chevy silverado that has been experiencing a problem with the abs systems. when you get below 10 miles an hour it starts acting up.. it doesnt want to stop. sometimes you have to let off and stomp them a couple of times to get them to stop.. you dont know when its going to act up either. it may go a few times without a problem then the next thing you know it starts doing it. i try not to drive it and when i do its close by. i have taken it to a shop and they said it was the abs wheel speed sensor . then they said that they had seen on the news where there is a concern with this problem.. and told me i should wait abit if i could because they may have a recall and that this could be expensive..

Dt: about a year in half ago the anti lock brakes starting acting up, when it was wet and preparing to stop the anti lock brakes would engage and the truck would not stop. code was left front sensor. this was replaced. did not correct the problem. had the right front sensor replaced, did not correct the problem. the fuse was then unplugged just so i would have brakes. currently, in vermont truck was due for inspection in june, and it will not pass inspection, with or without the anti lock brakes. spoke with elmore at gm in portland office, and he advised to take vehicle to gm dealer and have a diagnostic test done.*ak dealer cleaned both front speed sensors but did not guarantee it would solve the problem. *tt

The abs & brake warning lights sporatically illuminate while driveing and will sometimes reset to normal after you shut engine off and remove key. this has continued for 2 or 3 months. last week it finally went on and remained on and would not clear. i took the truck to the mechanic and his diagnostics indiacted a faulty ebcm. i have had it changed just today. i have checked with e others who also own this year truck silverado and they also have had problem. some have had it fixes and others not. the mechanic said is the abs light is iluminated then the abs is not operatable.

I own a 1999 chevy silerado ext.cab,i'm having problems with the anti-lock brake system it engauges when it is not needed cause the truck not to stop properly.i have to leave the anti-lock brake fuse out to drive the truck.

The abs malfunctioned. the system engaged without cause, resulting in the service brakes not working when depressed. when this occurred, the consumer has to pump the brake pedal several times to stop the vehicle. the dealership indicated that this occurred because the sensor on the front wheels gets corroded, causing the system to mis read. therefore the system indicates that the vehicle is on ice when it isn't and the abs engages. the dealership cleaned the front wheel sensor assembly. the dealership indicated that there's a recall on this problem but only for vehicles assembled in canada. *jb consumer concern when coming to a stop the abs system will activate caused by unwanted abs activation. *bf

While applying the brake pedal, the abs light appeared on the dashboard and remained on. vehicle failed to stop completely. vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the wheel speed sensor needed to be replaced. *ak

Around 40,000 miles the engine began ticking and tapping after start-up when the rngine is cold. now its happening all the time when you start it up. i heard from other owners its called (piston slap). i took ithe vehicle to the dealer and they said they had quite a few complaints about this and said the manufacture is working on the problem. does'nt look like anything will be done about it!!!! please help?

My 1999 chevrolet silverado antilock braking system is not operating correctly. when nearing a stopping point the antilock system engages and excessive braking distance results. there have been numerous near misses and once ran into an intersection nearly hitting other traffic. this is not acceptable performance for a machine with only 48,000 miles as no changes or services have been made to the vehicle in the brake component area. i have not performed the service as this was a recent incident and have learned about a possibility of a recall.

(1)parked 1999 silverado for 3 days. (2)when started upon return, abs module would not shut down. (3)dealership replaced part (old part not available) cause was due to corrosion.

Gm 1999 silverado anit lock brake unit would not shut off even when truck was shut off. i tried to disconnect battery and burned fingers. to correct the failure pulled the fuse, but brakes do not stop good i have to press real hard to stop. the problem with the abs brake is that the pump motor is producing voltage spikes and the amplifier shorts and won't shut off drawing high current and anti lock brake failure and over heating of battery terminals causing burns when touched. this was so hot that the post came out of the battery. to correct the problem gm needs to change the amplifier to original failed 75 amp pump motor power amplifier with a double duty rated 104 amp (360 amp surge) device. add a 600 watt high speed voltage suppressor to protect the ebcm and the new amplifier set from voltage spikes created by the pump motor and jump starts. i have not had this fixed on my truck because i have been waiting for a recall. when are you going to make them fix this. you have many listing of this failure on your site. listed as brake lights on, abs etc. ebay now has people who fix these modules one has over 400 satisfied customers. i this this may effect million of trucks. incident date i would have to check for actual date.

I have a 1999 chevrolet silverado. mine was not recalled due to tailgate cable failures. my tailgate cables have in fact failed. general motors needs to recall all of these vehicles for cable failure.*ak

Abs brake failure with only 40,000 miles on the truck. the abs brakes would come on if i went over bumps or railroad tracks, and then i would have to pump my brakes to get them back (or the truck wouldn't stop). finally, at 40,000 miles my abs light came on, my abs pump came on and would not turn off, and the chevy dealership told me my abs module blew. i was quoted $1,200 to replace it. instead, i pulled my abs fuse and operate the vehicle without abs brakes as i refuse to pay for what i believe is a defective abs system. it is my humble opinion that chevy should recall and replace this defect.

Abs brakes activate in wet weather for the first 5 minutes of driving.

Tailgate cable recall for 1999 silverado. i understand that an investigation is under was for the 1998 and 1999 silverado for tailgate cable failure. just to advise you that i had to replace of the cable because of metal fatigue in the cable. (rusted right through it). gm has refused to replace the cable as they said that my vehicle was outside of the current recall. my vehicle is the new body style silverado and is identical to the 2000 model. i hope this adds somthing to your investigation. *ak

Started my truck one day after shopping and a loud humming or buzzing noise was coming from under driver side of the truck. had to disconnect the power from the abs module because it would sit there an run with the truck turned off. took truck to the dealer and they said that the modiule was bad and need to be replaced. i had 40,000 miles and was out of warranty. was told that it would cost $1000 to be replaced and that they have had many of these trucks come in with the same problem. they said it is so common that they think if i fixed it that it probably wiould happen again and the part would be only warrantied for one year. gm has produced a faultly part obiviously and should fix it. now i have a $30.000 truck that has no anti lock brakes and a abs light and a emergency light on my dash that will not go off until the part is fixed.

The motor continued to run after the vehicle was shut off. the dealer did not cooperate until a recall was placed on the vehicle. the vehicle was equipped to start itself but if the vehicle begun to move, the only way to stop it was to pull the electrical impulse or pull one of the two fuses that went with the abs system, and would make the vehicle stop. the other fuse indicated whether or not the vehicle was running on the dashboard. the consumer has had other recall work done to the vehicle in reference to the transmission in which they replaced the driveshaft. *ak *sc

The abs engages at low speeds. this has almost caused several accidents in parking lots. i have pulled the abs fuse in the fuse panel.

Dt: the consumer vehicle had problem with it's abs brakes. while coming to a stop below 5 mph the abs would kick in while on dry pavement. the vehicle was taken to the dealer nov.2004 to be fixed. the dealer cleaned the sensor mounts of rust and retested and it showed that the left side was out of limits. the road test showed no unwanted abs stops. this has happen to the consumer one time within the last month. the consumer has the service invoices. *nm

Contact states he became aware of a report about gm vehicles, abs system. approximately 2 years ago in the summer while coming to a stop sign he pushed on the brake pedal, he heard and felt the abs kick in, he could not stop. *ak the consumer stated he disconnected the abs because it doesn't operate properly. *jb

The abs system on my 1999 silverado activates at low speeds causing eratic braking.

I was driving at around 35 mph when i tried to brake and the brakes did not work. i tried the emergency brake and that wouldn't work either. i rolled to a stop and called a towing company. when i got out of the vehical there was break fluid leaking on the drivers side of the car. the vehical was towed to the dealership where i was informed that the brake line had bust. i was also told that the feul line was about to bust. the entire break and fuel lines were corroded and had to be replaced. it took the dealership 2 week to repair. the cost was over $2000.

Contact stated: 2nd time the brakes failed on this vehicle. during second incident an accident occurred on 4/6/2005, contact was going about 35-40 mph, there was another vehicle in the lane, stopped, and another vehicle stalled in the same lane. contact slammed on the brakes, and the brakes failed. *ak *sc *jb

My '99 silverado had the brake failure problem (anti-lock brakes not working at very low speeds) that i see is now being investigated. i took it to the chevy dealer, and was told it was a common problem. i was required to pay to have it fixed. i suspect this was never reported by gm.

Antilock brack module failed at approximately 42,000 miles.

Purchased 99 silverado in aug 2004, with only 22600 miles. within 1000 miles my abs light came on, with a loud humming sound from under my truck. my abs module failed. cost to replace just the part exceeds $800.00. gm say there is not a recallable issue, but every dealer/service dept i talked to stated it was a common problem. i do not have the money to replace it, abs fuse was removed so that the pump would not burn up.

I purchased a 1999 chevrolet silverado extended cab one month ago used from a local dealer. as i have read on numerous web sites and forums many thousands of people encountered the same problem as i have, abs electronic brake control module failure. i drove home ,parked the truck in the driveway, and the next morning started it up, and the abs pump stayed engaged. as to not cause damage to the system i removed the abs system 60 amp fuse, totally disabling it , and will not drive the truck until i get new part. many can't afford to pay for the expensive replacement cost of a part that obviously failed prematurely, and have chosen the cheaper route by removing a 50 cent fuse that totally disabled the abs system, as not to cause further damage to the abs system or the rest of the vehicle others have paid out of pocket for the repairs and/or replacement of parts. meanwhile all of these vehicles are still used daily on our city streets and highways without the proper vacationing equipment that the manufacturer installed and intended to be used as advertised as a safety feature. through conversations with other mechanics, as i am one myself proudly serving in the military for 17 years, dealers and manufacturer knew about the failure, and admitted that a problem existed. yet nothing was done whether voluntary or mandatory. to fix the problem. i will fix the problem that i have with my abs system because i could not live with myself, knowing that through my failed actions i may cause injury or death to innocent people. let me conclude with a saying we have in the military, service before self. thank you for your time.*ak

Consumor states: brakes do operate properly at low speeds. vehicle continues to roll, and doesn't come to complete stop. pressing very firm, and not stopping. no for warning before hand, checked brake fluid. took vehicle to mechanic, and had it checked out. *ak *tt

My1999 chevrolet silverado 4wd had 48,00 miles on it when problems started. in good weather on dry smooth roads my abs would engage while i was stopping or slowing in a normal manner. even though this was somewhat surprising i did not feel that the stopping distance was being compromised. then an incident occured while my wife and i were turning into a parking space at a retail store. as i was turning into the parking space i applied the brakes to solw the vehicle and it felt like i had no brakes, the pedal was very hard to push, felt like it would not move like it was stuck, and there was no braking action. i immediately believed that i was going to strike the vehicle ahead of me and continued to push the brake pedal with greater force. the result is that all of a sudden the brake moved forward and the antilock brakes engaged. the truck stopped before i struck the other vehicle. a good mechanic explained that his experience with chevry truck abs throwing false signals was that the sensors were probably dirty and needed cleaned. as a simple check of the abs i removed the 60 amp fuse for the antilock brake system. my brakes work very well now and i have not had a problem. i have not scheduled an appointment to get the problem fixed and after reading that your organization is now conducting an investigation into problems with chevrolet truck antilock brake failures i intend to leave the system as it is now until you finish your investigation. some information on my background. i am 54 years of age, a retired law enforcement officer,26 years service, having reached the rank of chief deputy/undersheriff. i have owned, worked on, and built old cars since i was a teenager.

1. i began to notice that as i applied my brakes to come to stops at stop signs or destination arrivals that the anti-lock brakes would deploy. 2. the anti-lock brakes would activate when coming to a stop when they should not have (the wheels were not slipping). although i never actually hit anything, i did come close several times. 3. i took the truck to my local chevy dealer and they fixed the problem. the charge was $90.93 for labor. i still have the receipt.

Parking brake has never been effective to hold vehicle, at 66000 miles the rear axle pinion bearings wore out. at 68 k000miles the abs controller stopped working/ fuse had to be pulled to stop motor. [should there have been a recall on this part as a lot of silverados have the same problem] 73000 miles front axle housing split in two halves literally/ had to remove axle. 50000 miles battery corroded and leaked at positive terminal tailgate straps broke, luckily one first.*ak

On monday, march 21st, 2005, when my 1999 chevy silverado truck was started, the abs light came on and a loud buzzing sound from under the truck started. when the truck was turned off, the buzzing continued. the 60 a fuse was removed to finally making stop, after running the battery down the first day. this is a major safety issue that shoudl be recalled or on extended warranty. i read on a website that many many other truck owners have had the same problem. i am looking at upwards of $1200 to have this module on the abs pump fixed, and that might not solve the problem long term. it could happen again right away. i would appreciate gm or chevy recalling this malfucntion to the abs before a serious accident takes place. i purchashed a chevy truck to avoid these types of issues. now i have a $1200 estimate to fix a problem that shoudl be under warranty or recalled. please inform me as to how much chevy is willing to reimburse me on this major problem that is chevy/gm's fault. michael a. setlak 8937 nautical way new haven, in 46774

Chevrolet silverado 2004, premature failure of brake system. *bf while driving the abs light and brake light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who informed the consumer that a new abs brake module needed to be installed because the current on shorted out. the dealer also rplaced the electronic brake control module. *nm

While pulling away from a stop sign or traffic light accelerator pedal stuck. owner contacted the dealer. who recommended that the owner use a foam padding/ sand paper material and rub the inside of the throttle body. *ak

In low speeds there was no stopping power, and the anti-lock brakes seemed to kick in. the consumer struck another vehicle at 5 mph when this occurred. the manufacturer stated that there was no problem with the vehicle. the consumer did find a technical service bulletin on the internet. *ak *sc *jb

While driving my 1999 chevy silverado, the abs light came on and stayed on. a little searching brought me to the abs module on the frame under the left side of the passenger compartment. it was running, even after the vehicle was turned off and the key removed, it continued to run. i disconnected the power to the unit and tapped the wire up so as not to let it get wet,(obviously,it's carrying a lot of juce.) when i took the truck to the dealer where i had purchased it the service manager told me that the entire module was bad and it would cost nearly 1000 dollars to fix. he said that the module itself was going to cost 761 dollars. it's my opinion that nothing more than an internal relay has gone bad and i know for a fact it has happened to others too. my truck has only 35,000 miles on it and shouldn't be presenting costly repairs like this while i'm still making payments on it and have babied it in the 13 months that i've owned it. if these modules are failing at the rate that it appears they are then chevy should recall them or come up with a less expensive solution like an external by-pass type relay that wouldn't involve replacing a costly module like this over some 5 or 10 dollar relay. *ak

I parked my 99 chevrolet silverado z71 outside for 2 evenings. when i came out to my truck 2 days later, i realized that i did not close the tailgate. but then i noticed that the tailgate was hanging down further than it should be, resting on the bumper of the truck. it turns out that both of the cables that hold the tailgate in place had sheared off and dropped the tailgate onto the bumper. the cables had rusted straight through and caused damage to the tailgate because of it. i am currently in the process of replacing the broken cables, and will save the cables for future reference. *nm

Module controlling the abs brake system fails making the system inoperable. braking system reverts to the standard braking system. my contacts with local garages indicates this is a common failure. module replacement costs are in excess of $1,000. been advised that most owners do not have it repaired. *jb

I do not receive any re-calls and recently saw where there is one now for tail gates. i replaced one on my own. also, i went to stop and there were no brakes. after taking it to the garage, it was a hub. was there a recall on this also that i did not receive? i have a 1999 silverado z71 and only have a little over 50k miles on it. please inform me if there have been re-calls that i am not aware of. we could have all been killed from this hub incident.*ak

Whenever the engine warmed up it caused the accelerator pedal to stick intermittently, the accelerator pedal had to be depressed hard to get the vehicle to accelerate from a stop position. and the emergency parking brake would not hold properly when parked on an incline. vehicle continued to roll. the dealer was notified.*ak

While vehicle was under warranty i complained of fading brakes while traversing rough spots in roads.dealership mechanics said it was the abs system. he said i could disconnect it?but i chose not to. now my 1999 silverado has an even bigger problem. while performing a gentle stop the brake pedal becomes hard and vehicle will not stop unless i stand on the brake pedal. i crashed through my garage door the last time this happened. my brakes were inspected and they are all in good order. the mechanic did however notice that the abs was on constantly. Opened tailgate and both support cables snapped, one after the other. had some one been standing or moving equipment on the tailgate, serious injury may have occurred. because the cable was rubber coated, you were not aware of the problem until failure. the deal indicated that failures of these cables are well known, and 200-2004 trucks were recalled, however 1999 (new body style) with same tailgate arrangement were not recalled. with both cables failing within minutes of each other why did gm not recall like designed components?*ak

Consumer received recall 04v129000 for the 2001, chevrolet , silverado concerning defective tailgate. however consumer owned same make and model for another vehicle which was not included in the recall. the tailgate cable rusted. *ak

Windshield wipers worked intermittently during inclement conditions. dealer was contacted. dealer informed consumer that the vehicle was not covered under that recall.*ak the consumer stated that both the 1997 chevrolet and the 1999 tahoe had problems with wipers. *tc

The cables that hold the tailgate up on my 1999 chevrolet silverado pickup are encased in plastic. this plastic holds moisture in and causes the cable to corrode and at the same time hides the corrosion. i was standing on my tail gate and the cables broke, causing me to fall. luckily, i was not hurt, but i could have very easily been hurt.*ak

The abs module is defective. the abs pump continues to run after the vehicle is turned off. my family has two of these vehicles and both have had the same problem. what does it take to get nhtsa or gm to realize that this is a safety related problem and do something about it before someone is injured?*ak

Abs system went out at 42000 miles. realized this when i took the truck to the dealer to ask about the buzzing sound the truck was making after i shut the engine down. was informed that it was the braking module, and parts and labor would be $1200. was notified this is only covered under 36k warranty. read the manual and figured out which fuse to pull to disable the module. abs light remains on as well as the parking brake light.*ak

Abs light and brake light stay lit in on my 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500 [xxx]. i brought the vehicle to a chevrolet dealer to have it serviced. the dealer told me it was the abs motor is misaligned and is burnt out and would cost in excess of $1,000 to fix. also, that he has seen this problem a lot. for a quick fix he told me i can remove the fuse to the abs. he told me he could not do it because it was a "safety issue." i had no choice since i did not have the money to fix it. but recently i notice there was a recall on the 2000 models (nhtsa campaign id#: 00v055000). since the 1999 model was release toward the end of 1999 and uses the same part as the 2000 model, it only seems logical the recall should extend also for the 1999 models. i brought this point up to the dealer, but they said they are very specific to servicing vehicle recalls and my vehicle did not qualify. i fear if this problem is not recalled, many trucks with this faulty braking system is a serious safety concern. i have had this problem for about 1 year. please help. thank you. Consumer received recall 00045 for replacement of the seat belts that locked. the problem recurred, and had not been resolved.*ak the consumer stated that the locking of the seat belt would at the least break a persons collar bone. *tc

The parking brake was defective and wore the drum out. this was discovered after the vehicle rolled back. the consumer was inside the vehicle when this occurred. *jb the clip which held the brake shoe was defective. *sc *jb

In the last month i've had my abs brakes on my 1999 silverado engage at between 10 and 5 mph every time i stop..on three different occasionsif there hadn't been a curb in front of me io would have been crosswise on a heavy traffic street twice and once i'd have gone into a business front...no abs light has been on in the vehicle..i brought this up to the dealership and all they told me was that there was a service bulletin on this and no recall..in my opinion this is a very serious problem on a nearly 30,000 dollar vehicle and also an 850 dollar option..the parts alone are over 400 to 700 dollars...i checked several forums on the internet and this is a highly reported problem...my vehicles are kept in showroom condition and serviced well. *ak

While applying the brake pedal at low speeds brakes failed. vehicle jerked and vibrated uncontrollably. consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and drove it to dealer for inspection. mechanic determined that abs wheel sensor needed to be replaced. *ak the consumer owns a 1999 chevy silverado and a 2001 tahoe with the same problem. the consumer stated that the vehicle moves abour 4 feet farther than intended after brake is applied. no warning lights on dash to let the driver know the brakes are having problems. *tc

When braking at a low speed abs system suddenly engaged causing the brake pedal to go almost to the floor and drastically increasing the stopping distance, almost causing an accident. this occurred on dry pavement with no skid imminent.*ak a mechanic informed me that it was caused by minute particles from the wheel bearings affecting the magnetic detector for the abs system causing it to activate suddenly and without warning. this occurred frequently until i had to replace both front wheel bearings.

Intermittent loss of braking power. the brake pedal went to the floor, and vehicle experienced extended stopping distance. dealer was notified. dealer informed consumer that wheel speed sensor needed to be replaced. *ak the vehicle crashed into a wall resulting in front end damage. *tc

The wire cables holding the tailgate to the bed broke and two people setting on the gate were surprised to fall to the ground. the truck was setting still. the dealer charged me full price for the replacement and offered no apology, or relief in this matter. *nm

Low speed activation of the antilock brakes resulting in unsafe braking conditions. despite widespread problems with my model and several others, gm was unwilling to assist in a repair exceeding 1,000.00

While driving my 1999 silverado to work i had to stomp on the brakes to try to avoid hitting a deer. at that moment the abs controller failed and subsequently i collided with the deer. i also have checked various forums on the subject and have found that there have been far too many abs failures on the 1999 chevy silverados. gm should be held accountable.*ak

Driver heard a loud winding noise coming from the front. drove vehicle to dealer for inspection. vehicle was placed on the diagnostic machine. mechanic determined that the wheel bearing needed to be replaced. this vehicle was not on recall and the warranty expired. *ak

3 months ago the drivers side tailgate cable totally disentegrated and seperated in two parts. knowone was injured, but this could have injured whoever was working on or sitting on the tailgate, not to mention damage the truck. the passenger side tailgate cable in still intact. the failing cable gave no signs of separating beforehand, however no looking at the exposed cable, it appreas rusted through, thus causing the failure. *ak

Firestone steeltex class action status request.*mr while pulling a fifth wheel trailer at about 50 mph, the driver heard a loud thump from the rear of the vehicle. the consumer stopped and noticed that eh rear tire had separated and the loose tread end was hitting the mud flap and curled the panel upward into the wheel well. upon request the consumer sent the tire to firestone on may 18, 2004. on june 8, 2004 the consumer received a letter from a law firm indicating that his claim for reimbursement had been denied. *nm

Right side of the tailgate cable snapped. *mr this occurred when loading a small mower. the tailgate pulled away in the process. the left side was still attached and bent a pin on the inside of the bed as well as the hinges on both sides on the inside of the bed and also bent the tailgate. may be related to recall# 04v129000. *sc *jb

Consumer states the fuel gauge reads incorrectly. as a result driver has to use the mileage to know how much fuel the vehicle has. *ak

While standing on the tailgate it broke. consumer stated there was a recall on the 2000 models, but not on the 1999 model. *ak

Consumer stated that while driving and applying the brakes, he heard a humming noise. it sounded as if the abs was kicking in. this should not happen because there was no bad weather. the consumer stopped and turned the vehicle off and the noise was still there. after getting off work the noise was still there, but the vehicle would not start. consumer got a co-worker to jump start the vehicle. when raising the hood, the found the fuse for the abs and removed it. the noise then stopped. but when the consumer put the fuse back the noise started again and the abs illuminated light. the mechanic told the consumer that it was a mechanical design flaw common with these vehicles. *ak *jb

I was on a float trip in the southeastern part of missouri. i lent my truck to one of my fraternity brothers to drive to the back of the campsite to get a paper so that we could board the bus. my tailgate was down while he was driving and on the way back, driver's side cable on the tailgate snapped and the tailgate fell from the truck. the passenger side cable remained secure to the tailgate and it was drug behind the truck for about 300 yards. there was damage to the tailgate itself on both sides from the rocks it was drug over. it scraped off the spray on bed liner that was on the tailgate and, because one of the cables was still attatched, beat against my bumber causing many little dents on it. i talked to gm and they said they would not fix anything because it was not under warranty and it had not been recalled. my dad is in the process of bondoing the tailgate and we will have to replace the cables, the spray in liner and get the tailgate repainted. *ak

While driving 40 mph front driver side tire sidewall separated. consumer managed to pull over and changed the tire. manufacturer was notified, but did not resolve the problem. firestone, wilderness, at p215/75r16. *ak

After sitting on the tailgate the cable snapped. there were no injuries. . recall 04v129000 was issued for 2000 and 2004 models. the part number was the same for the 1999 and 2000 models. *ak

The consumer stated that the straps which held the tailgate in place broke, forcing the driver to fall to the ground injuring himself. the owner contacted the manufacturer and was told that only the trucks from 2000 to 2004 were being recalled. however, this problem is occurring in other models as well. provide further details. *jb *tc

I have a loud ticing noise coming from the left rear of the engine. while i was pulling my 5th wheel the noise kept getting louder and louder and had loss of power. by the time we got to the camp ground it sounded like i had lost my mufler. we took it to muffler man of ludington and they discovered that 4 exhaust manifold bolts had sheared off, 2 on left year and 2 on right rear of both manifolds. they took the manifolds off and replaced all the bolts with new ones except for the very left rear was sheared off flush and could not get a drill in to drill out and tap. in order for them to get this out they would have to pull the head which would have cost $1000.00. they put it back together and the tic was gone. this only cost me 6 hours of vacation with my family and $200.00. the tic has returned.*ak

The rotors rusted. the manufacturer stated that repairs were not covered since the consumer lived in new england. salt from the snow caused the problem. *ak the pedal had gone to the floor, c/c light would stay on until the vehicle was shut off, the gas pedal would stick/throttle body, and there was a clinging noise, the master cylinder was inoperative, and the rear rotors were pitted and rusting. *sc *jb

The abs control module went out on my 1999 chevy silverado c1500 truck (56,000 miles). the failure causes the abs pump to run continuously and renders the abs system inoperable, and the truck undriveable. the temporary solution is to remove the 60 amp abs fuse to make the pump stop running. my local chevy dealer says the repair will cost $1,200. based on the number of other failures with this same part, i feel that this is a defect from the manufacture and should be recalled/repaired by them. *jb

Abs & brake lights come on intermittently. took to dealer to have checked but lights were not on at the time. they did not even get in and test drive. i was told it's a common problem caused by the abs modules and that it's not a safety issue. people are driving around with brake warning lights illuminated and they are lead to believe they don't have a safety issue. *ak

While loading lumber into my 1999 chevy k1500 silverado the tailgate support cables broke releasing the tailgate. the weight of the lumber caused the tailgate to rest on the rear bumper causing minor damage to the tailgate. the lumber itself nearly knocked myself and a friend to the ground. the replacement cables cost me $31.00 dollars from the dealer, but then i find out that the 2000-2004 silverado's have been recalled for the exact problem i have and the replacement cables sold to me by the dealer are the same faulty cables i had to begin with and that i am not eligible for the recall. *jb

The fuel gauge sending unit failed (i go by mileage to know if i need fuel or not). driver's side seat belt locks up when you go to look to change lanes (dealer couldn't reproduce the problem--so it's never been fixed). passenger seat belt locks up if you just lean forward to roll down the window (was told this was a mechanism for a baby seat--didn't think car seats were supposed to be in the front seat). right side daytime running lamp burned out a long time ago. abs module failed (had to pull the fuse so the pump wouldn't burn up) therefore the truck no longer has abs. driver's side front wheel hub failed due to lack of grease in the non-consumer maintainable bearing (the whole hub had to be replaced). the water pump has already failed (replaced that). the transmission is starting to slip here & there. the accelerator sticks causing you to have to jam on it in parking lots & other places where it's just not safe to be darting forward. this model year was just a bad year for gm. they need to fix these problems. this is the worst gm vehicle i've ever owned (and i've been a loyal gm customer all my driving years). *ak

The brakes on my 1999 chevy silverado failed. i realized the brakes were dragging/locking up and when i tried to stop got a terrible noise which was heard by everyone in the parking lot. when i was driving home, they finally gave out and i coasted into the intersection. i can stop if i pump the brakes but the right rear caliper, rear pads and rear rotors are shot. brake fluid is leaking all over the place and it literally ate right through while driving home for 45 miles. what a disappointment. total estimate to fix = $1250.00 , recovery from gm = nothing. *ak

Normal driving conditions with consistent vehicle maintainence. the abs module failure occurred without warning. the braking system in the vehicle seemed to lose power and required more than normal braking time. i took the vehicle in for repairs immediately at a cost of $1,000. i was told it is due to a faulty part that general motors is aware of but refuses to recall due to the 750,000 1999 silverados on the road. at a part cost of $700 you can easily do the math. a recall must be in order. these heavy trucks are not safe on the road if not a class action lawsuit is in order.*ak

The abs brakes were used for the first time this past winter since i have owned the truck. after they came on, the pump never shut off even after i shut the truck off at work. i had to pull the abs fuse in order for the hydraulic pump to shut down. two chevrolet dealers have told me that i need a new computer component (module) and pump that is only sold together. the cost for parts and labor will be over $1,000. as of now, the abs light and parking brake light are on and i do not have the funds to fix this.

There is a chronic fuel level sending unit failure, fuel gauge fails. this unit located in the fuel tank fails due to "contaminated fuel in the area attacking and corroding the unit causing it to fail." this is the same response dealers are instructed to give when customers complain about this problem. i have heard this from different parts of the country from dealers from el paso, texas to northern new mexico.*ak

Noticed a loud buzzing sound coming from near the frame under the driver's side door. buzzing present with key on and off. visual inspection indicated that it probably had something to do with the abs. pulled the abs fuse, and buzzing stopped. further research revealed that the ebcm went bad, and must be replaced at a cost of nearly $1000. also, seems to be a very frequent issue with 1999 and 2000 chevy trucks.*ak

Anti-lock brake pump developed internal short. vehicle only had about 47,000 miles on it. chevrolet dealer quoted $1000 to replace pump. called 1 800 complaint number. they called dealer and worked the price down to $400. still too much for me to pay for a defective part that should have been replaced for nothing.*ak

The consumer shut the vehicle off and the brake pump will not shut off. it continued to pump even when the ignition is off the dealer stated that the control module on the abs brakes is defective. *la

We purchased a 1999 chevy silverado on 03-27-01. we have never used it for heavy-duty work. on 7-1-04, my husband, driving on a county park road at 15-20 mph, went over a speed bump and the tail gate opened and the right rear cable on the tailgate broke in two. the tailgate, hanging from the left cable, was damaged as it was dragged about 10 ft. the cable, which is covered with plastic, was completely rusted under the plastic cover. the top of the cable cover did not appear to have any open access to water, so it is doubtful that an inspection of the cable would have shown any wear. the dealer told us there was a cable recall for model years 2000 and on, but not the 1999. repair work was our responsibility. he referred us to gm customer assistance. i spoke with a manager, robert beckett, who opened a complaint file#1-232-773-551. he also said there was nothing we could do since we were outside our new vehicle warranty. it was simply a maintenance/wear item. he said he inspects his tailgate cables every time he changes his oil. a man i know who worked for gm for 20 years and has owned pick-up trucks all of his life said he never checks the tailgate cables on any of his trucks, has never heard of anyone who does, and thinks that this manager's implication that it was negligence on our part is unfounded. we purchased two new cables a gm parts dealer and installed them. we still have the defective cable. we feel this accident was a result of a part defect and that gm should be responsible for the entire repair as a result of this accident. fortunately it didn't break when someone stood on the tailgate, as has happened to other truck owners, resulting in bodily injury, or in heavy traffic or on a highway. this gm manager said there was nothing further i could do. he gave me the address to mail a complaint (chevrolet, po box 33170, detroit, mi 48232) but that it was pointless because the letter would end up on his desk. please help. *la

While i was 1100 miles away from home on vacation there was a humming noise from underneath my vehicle. after returning home it was taken to a local garage and i was told from there head mechanic that it was a shorted out control module for the abs motor. the mechanic did not even look under the vehicle because he said he was well aware of this product failing due to all of the other 1999 chevy silverado's that had the same problems. the local mechanic pulled the fuse out and that stopped the motor from running. *la after that, i called the dealer that i bought the certified vehicle from and they told me that it would cost me a fee to have them look at it, i told them that i had a certified mechanic already look at and they informed me that they needed to have a g.m. mechanic look at it before they could do anything for me. so after paying $60 for them to tell what i already knew. they told me that i would have to pay $1200 to $1400 for the new part and labor. i am still driving it today without the abs this i strongly feel this is a safety issue, for one the abs light is always lit along with the brake light. so there would be no way of telling if there is more wrong with the breaks if something else would break on them. also, isn't abs suppose to be a safety device compared to the mechanical breaks of the 80's. g.m. needs to be responsible for this > recall in order! *la

The recall remedy failed, within 19,000 miles of having the front seat belt retractor recall 01v159000 performed. the failure described in the recall occurred on the passenger side seat belt retractor. *ak

My truck has 68000 miles on it and i am now on my third transmission. i have the 1999 lt model with the 4 speed auto. one failure was while on vacation trans failed while stuck in traffic. it would not hold pressure. next failure was only 4 months later lost reverse and 1st gear completly car had to be towed again. now 3rd trans is not shifting correctly something is not right in these transmissions. *jb

Like so many others, my abs system has gone out on my 1999 chevy silverado, i was simply driving to town when the light came on, 34,000 miles on the vehicle. the motor kept running even when the vehicle was turned off, i immediately proceeded to my asc certified mechanic who reviewed the vehicle and informed me my abs module is shot and the estimated repair cost is $1000.00+ (partially due to no aftermarket parts available.) so not only is gm unwilling to acknowledge the problem, they are compounding the pain for owners by holding a monopoly on the repair part. unacceptable - a recall is in order - this is a serious safety issue gm is not addressing. *ak

The anti-lock brake motor and module go out around 50,000 miles. i know of at least 5 1999 chevrolet silverado's that this has happened to in roswell alone. the anti-lock motor will constantly run until you pull the fuse on the system. once the fuse is pulled you have no anti-lock brakes and the anti-lock and brake light stay on in the dash. to me this sounds like it could cause some accidents. but i have not heard of it causing any. *jb

At 55000 miles the abs light came on. the abs motor continued to run even when engine was turned off. this has occured on numerous occassion and appears to be a safety issue. nhtsa had lots of complaints on this issued. is something going to be done to force chevrolet to have a recall. *ak *nm

The fuel guage on the 1999 chevrolet silverado would become erratic and would read incorrect fuel readings. cause of this defect is a faulty fuel sending unit, built into the silverado's fuel pump assembly. *ak

At 38000 miles my abs control module failed. two local dealers informed me that gm has had a lot of problems with the abs module at a cost of $1200.00.i called gm customer assistance and got no assistance.i would like someone to look into the abs module failure problem. *ak

Adjusting front driver seat when adjusting lock broke sending seat sliding forward. seat will not lock just slides back and forth when driving. since safety belt restraint is in the seat and not bolted to the actually frame of truck seat slides back and forth during braking and acceleration. not safe to drive until fixed. the broken piece is a three inch piece of plastic. i really don't feel safe now in knowing that the only thing restraining me from crashing into the steering wheel and into a inflating airbag during a front crash is a piece of plastic that could and will at any time break for no apparent reason except for the fact that chevrolet has a design flaw and still does not feel they should issue a recall to have this replaced with something that would provide more security than a piece of plastic. and the kicker is the tech at the dealer claims it takes 2.5 hours to replace the locking adjuster at the rate (my bill was $230 just for the labor) and the part cost ranges from $150 to $200 depending on where you get it. outrageous if you ask me. i called chevrolet customer service and was able to get my part for free but still had to pay labor to have it installed. i have a 1999 silverado but it only has 11,000 on it so the part definitely did not break due to wear and tear. so i guess after a few people are seriously injured or killed maybe someone will actually do something about safety issues such as this and make the manufacturers of these vehicles with safety issue responsible. *la

While driving 35 mph tailgate cable snapped on the passenger side because it was rusted and corroded. *ak

1. power window passenger door: operates slowly and if it gets too warm will quit. after 30 seconds will continue slowly 2. other - cd player: plays tract 1 then skips & ejects cd (laser out of line) 3. abs system has failed - automatic brake control module has to be replaced. this is a common problem for the '99 siverado. (the local auto wrecker won't even sell a used one unless there are less than 40000 km. this should say something!) i feel this should be a recall

While the vehicle was parked, the driver/passenger side tail gate straps snapped. *jb this occured while the consumer loaded an atv in the back of the vehicle. both cables on the tail gate broke at the same time. the cables showed no sign of problem before. both cables were replaced with new gm factory cables of the same material. the cables were recalled on the 2000-2004 models. they were replaced with stainless steel. *sc

This is the first new vehicle we have ever bought. but not a good expreience, we have always had gm products with no problems. we just had the truck in the garage and they put it on the computer, it said code po137 02 sensor bank 1 sensor 2 replace also code po300 misfire #7 cylinder replace injector and fuel pressure regulator. this cost 448.78. also po300 misfire #7 cylinder replace injector and fuel pressure regulator and code po463 fuel level sensor needs fuel sensor replaced at a cost of 301.00. we can't afford this at this time. they also said both front wheel bearings with speed sensors need replaced at a cost of 642.00. we can't have this done now either. we are going to try to get along with the brake failure long enough to save money to fix. we replaced the battery sept 11th at a cost of 65.00 and an alighment in june at a cost of 47.00 and rear brake rotors and pads replaced in july at a cost of 279.00. we had thought of trading or selling outright and getting another truck, but can't sell it as it is.

Abs system has a continuous buzzing sound coming from beneath the truck even when the keys were turned off. the only way to stop it was to disconnect the battery. during evaluation of a repair, the steel screws that hold the system together were screwed into an aluminum plate and were so rusty and corroded that one of them broke off when the repairman attempted to remove it. abs system is placed where it is unprotected from moisture and road chemicals, such as salt.

Manual transmission locked in gear. emerg. brk. cable will not adjust. abs module has noise. stopped by removing fuse, abs feature not functioning. trans failed in feb. 2003 @ 65k miles. repair made by valencia chevrolet in valencia calif. cost was handled by a extended service warranty. cost to me after a lot of heated negotiation was 85.00. the agency wanted me to authorize a new trans. and clutch. cost: 3600.00 the emergency brake cable failed @21k miles in 2001, the abs module failed @42k miles. in 2002. neither brake item has been repaired. valencia chevrolet wants 2300.00 to repair the abs problem, no quote to repair brake cable.

Abs pump motor runs all the time , even when the ignition is turned off. p.s. looked for a solution on the web, found that this is a fairly common problem with the 1999 chevy silverdo and very costly. called chevy motor division, they gave me a service request number and said to take the vehicle to the dealership for evaluation.

While pulling into a driveway at 7 mph consumer depressed the brakes and vehicle did not slow down and collided with another vehicle already in the driveway. no injuries were reported. dealer examined the vehicle, and determined that left front hub was defective and needed to be replaced. *ak

When driving over a rough surface road, such as a gravel road, abs system chattered and the brake pedal went to the floor. also, when this occurred, excessive force had to be applied to the brake pedal to stop the vehicle. dealership replaced the abs computer chip. this corrected the problem temporarily. . the problem had progressively gotten worse. the regional representative indicated that the abs was within their level of acceptance. *ak *la

Plastic seat-locking device on driver side seat broke in half inside rail causing the seat to slide back and forth without any restriction thereby preventing the seat from locking into position. had noticed several times that the chair had difficulty lokcing when seat was adjusted to gain access to back seat.

During normal operation, the abs electronic control unit catastrophicallly failed leading to a battery to abs hydraulic pump motor short circuit. the pump motor coninuously ran even with the ignition off unitll the abs fuse was removed. a new control unit was required to restore the system to operation. this unit cost $877. apparantly the same problem was part of a 2000 model year recall, but did not include 1999 year vehicles. i have found two other 1999 vehicles that experienced the exact same failure. i have the old module which i can make availible for testing.*ak

The service abs light on my 1999 silverado went on, and i noticed a humming noise coming from under the driver side of my vehicle. i traced the noise to the abs control unit. the pump on this unit would continue to run after the ignition was turned off. the only way to stop the pump from continuously running was to remove the abs fuse which disables the abs braking system. i contacted gm but they're advice is to take to a dealership for repair. in the meantime, i am operating the vehicle with abs disabled.*ak

Seat position mechanism on manual adjust 60/40 bench seat failed causing seat to unexpectably move forward during a panic stop. the seat moved from rear most position to front most position. during this event the seat belt also failed to restrain the driver. no injuries were present.*ak

The driver's seat track is broken. it is very difficult after accessing the rear seat to get it to lock in place. somtimes slides forward or backward without warning. seat tilt adjuster also broken, just flops on floor. dealers are not very helpful. huge safetly issue.*ak

On 3/9/04 i took my 1999 chevy silverado to the dealership to have the front brakes serviced. the dealer serviced the front brakes, which showed "normal wear". the dealer then checked the rear brakes and found that both rear rotors showed severe pitting. both rear rotors were so baddly pitted that they were unable to resurface them. the dealer advised that the right rotor was 85 percent worn and the left side was 30 percent worn. the dealer also advised that the right rear caliper was sticking which led to the excessive wear. the dealer had no explanation for the excessive pitting/rusting of the rear rotors. the dealer stated that it appeared similiar to vehicles that were recieved from auction that had been sitting for three to six months. both rear rotors and the right rear brake caliper had to be replaced costing nearly $1000.00. my vehicle only has 49,186 miles on it. there was no indication, ie. more force than normal needed on the brake pedal for braking, grinding, or pulling to one side or the other, during braking that something may be wrong. it appears from other complaints that i have read, this is a common problem with this vehicle. *ak

The abs controller failed which allows abs pump to run continously. must pull abs fuse to stop pump. lack of abs system in pick-up truck very unsafe due to weight distribution. have read many similar complaints specific to this model. per www.circuitsolutions.com, very common problem. claims switch voltage overloaded.*ak

While driving home in my 1999 silverado with manual control seats, i had an uncommanded release of the driver seat while braking. upon investigation a part of the seat was found broken off and laying in the seat track. there was no adjustments performed to the seat prior to the failure occurring.*ak

Accelerator pedal sticks, and driver has to depress the gas pedal hard to accelerate. once the accelerator pedal engages, the vehicle accelerates to a high speed. on one occasion, driver depressed the accelerator hard and the vehicle accelerated and hit a dog.*ak

Ecbm switch to activate the abs pump has fused shut running the pump continuously. pulled fuse to save pump. abs warning light and brake warning light on dash illuminated removing any warning of further brake failure. truck still drives and is no more dangerous than a truck without abs, but failure should not occur on relatively new truck and should not occur so often. finally, gm should reconsider how much it costs to fix this. www.circuitsolutions.info will fix it for about $150 if you remove the module yourself and mail it to them. at $60/hour you would get over nine hours of labor from your local garage before you would exceed what gm wants just for the part.*ak

Inner seat adjuster on driver's side broke on my '99 chev silverado extended cab truck, having 34,000 miles, allowing seat to move forward and backward on rails without restriction. seat belt is part of seat thereby resulting in the driver to be moving forward and backward on seat rails without restriction. seat of course does stop in the further most backward and forward ends of seat rail. chev dealer lists part as "inner adjuster" part #14691. the part is sold as a whole according to the dealer and retails at about $149.00. what appeared to break was a plastic piece that fits in the rail and which would seem to be the part that halts the seat in the position chosen by the occupant. i still have the broken piece as recovered from my floor board. i had been having problems for a week or so with the seat not moving forward and backward when attempted by adjustment lever. i assumed i had something under the seat impeding movement, but was actually due to the aforementioned problem.

1999 chevrolet silverado had catastrophic anti-lock brake failure. antilock breaks are now totally inoperable. this is caused by a poorly designed control module, and could potentially cause an accident. the same vehicle has a fuel gauge problem in which the fuel gauge works only intermittantly, and is rarly accurate when it does work. how am i supposed to feel safe when driving this vehicle? how can i in good conscience let my wife drive this vehicle, and feel that she is safe? how could gm not recall, and fix these problems?? please answer my questions!! *ak

Abs electronic brake control module failed--just like all the rest, started truck, heard pump noise from under cab, pulled fuse, almost $1000 to fix on a truck with 57,000 miles on it. general motors needs to make this right with everyone. i'll be buying a ford or toyota next time around.

My fuel gauge does not read correctly. it either reads full (most of the time) or just after i fill up it flips to empty intermitently. this has caused me to run out of fuel a couple of times before i discovered the problem. i now have to use the trip meter to gage how far i have gone. *ak

Anti lock brake system - i have documentation starting from 2 months after the purchase of my 99' chevy z71 complaining of the brake system. every time i took the vehicle to dealer, he said "oh, that's normal". i have taken to the dealer numerous times over the course of time for all sorts of defects with the brakes being the biggest problem. the last time i took it was for the anti lock brakes was one month prior to the warranty going out. once again, "oh, that's normal". once my warranty expired, so did my anti lock brakes. even with documentation, the dealer would not fix it and chevrolet said i had to go through the dealer. i have a stack of documentation from where this vehicle has been in the shop for malfunctions as well as pretty much everything that can go wrong with a vehicle. i am upset because this is a problem that need fixing from the start and the dealer or chevrolet would make it good. *ak

I own a 1999 chevrolet silverado 4x4 ext. cab with a 5.3 engine and have had, what seems to me, to be a strong vibration coming from the torque converter at 40-50 mph. dealer tells me they can't find any vibration even though the mechanics can feel it when driving it. also the rear leaf springs clunk going over even the smallest of bumps. both have happened ever since i purchased the vehicle. *ak

I own a 1999 chevrolet silverado 1500 pickup truck with 45480 mileage. on 1/3/04 i noticed a motor noise coming from beneath the drivers door with the ignition turned off. i also noticed the abs warning light was on. to prevent the battery from draining i immediately drove my truck to just brakes. the mechanic informed me the abs module unit has a short. i immediately took my truck to mac haik chevy, katy freeway, houston, texas on a saturday and was told i would need to bring my truck back on monday and there was no recall notice on the abs unit. since i was afraid of damage to my battery and brake system i immediately took my truck back to just brakes to have the problem with the abs system fixed. the abs module was replaced which cost me $ 1,165.00. the mechanic told me there has been many complaints made of chevy silverado pickups with malfunctioned abs module units. i have checked the internet and was amazed by the thousands of complaints regarding chevy pickup truck abs module unit failures and replacements. i do not understand why chevrolet has failed to make such an issue as a recall. with the number of complaints i would think a government organization would force chevrolet to make a recall and reimburse owners who have become victims to chevrolet's deaf ears. *la

Hello i have a 1999 chevy silverado 2500 4x4 truck with original equipment firestone tires. steeltex radial a/t lt 245/75 r16 made in canada 28661 ur bm 05327-1 to date i have had 3 of the five tires suffer belt separation and another one looks to be going the same path as it is showing the same charateristics and driving warning signs as the first three failures. these failures have occurred at 24,373, 37,300, and 51,972. *ak

I own a 1999 chevrolet silverado extended cab 4wd pickup. the antilock brake system electronic control module (ebcm) locked on and would not turn off even with the ignition turned off. when i contacted a chevrolet dealer, i was told to remove the 60 amp fuse in the electric control center under the hood, and that will turn the abs module off so as to not drain the battery. i was also told that this is a common problem with this year and model truck and as of now gm will not replace it free of charge. i was told that the cost to replace the module was at least $1,000 and many replaced modules go bad also, but that i could still drive my truck without the abs system and i would have standard braking, the abs and brake light would just remain illuminated on the dash panel. i searched the web using google and found more of the same complaint then i could count. after going on the nhtsa web site i found about 100 complaints of the same problem that i have. i also checked the nhtsa recall list and found a safety recall (nhtsa recall no. 00v055/gm recall no. 00013) on 10,600 2000 chevrolet silverado, s10, and serra trucks for a defective antilock brake system motor that may become non-functional and cause the dynamic rear proprotioning (drp) system, which optimizes front to rear brake balance, to become inoperative, increasing the likelihood of a crash. now after checking in a repair manual and with an independent mechanic i discovered that the same thing will happen on my truck without the abs module activated, and gm dealers are telling people with this problem that it is an acceptable practice to drive the truck with the abs deactivated. are 1999 chevrolet truck owners more expendable then 2000 gm truck owners? i would think that there are probably as many 1999 gm trucks out on the roads as 2000 trucks, and i wonder how many have the abs system disabled. i feel the nhtsa needs to look into this unsafe condition.

1999 gm silverado 71,000 miles. new ventura 246 transfers case has developed a hole. the hole caused the loss of transfer case fluid under vehicle. dealer and gm customer service content that is not there problem or fault and will not repair under defect of material or manufacturing. dealer has also noted with gm customer service that the hole was a "puncture" indicating abuse. local transmission shop (goodale transmissions. columbus ohio) indicate that this is a common problem with this transfer case. the holes are caused by a retaining spring (used to hold an internal pump? per service shop) break and rub on the inside of the case. safety issues cased by this failure are possible fire when fluid is deposited on the exhaust system. loss of rear brakes due to contamination by transfer case fluid. possible loss of vehicle control if transfer case freezes due to lack of fluid. repair cost for $900 to $3000 plus. *la

1999 chevrolet silverado z71, 5.3l v8, 24,750 miles when incident occurred. while pulling out of my garage, the "abs" light on the dashboard came on and the electronic brake control module (ebcm) ran continuously, even with the ignition key off, and removed. as advised by dealer, i pulled the 60a fuse and the ebcm stopped running. i brought truck in to dealer and was advised that the ebcm module would need replacement at a cost of $1,039.68 ($807. for the part, $232.06 labor). from internet research, i discovered this was a very common problem with this year/model truck. also discovered that many people are driving the vehicle with the abs brakes disabled (ebcm 60a fuse pulled) because of the high repair cost. i fell this is a major safety hazard because the dashboard indicator lights, "abs" and "brakes" are both illuminated all the time once the ebcm module is disabled. this negates the ability to determine if a brake failure may be imminent because the indicator lights are always on. i also feel that if a person were to pull the fuses to these warning lights so they no longer illuminate, as well as disable (pull the 60a fuse) the ebcm module, and subsequently trade the vehicle in (to avoid the expensive repair), the dealer may not discover this fact and could resell the truck with the customer assuming he/she has antilock brakes when in fact they don't. this could result in a severe accident because handling a skid with abs is different that handling a skid without abs. in addition, in this scenario, if the primary brake system were to fail, there would be no indication from the dashboard warning lights, maybe resulting in death or injury from an accident. *la

I work as a salesman at a small used car dealership. in the past few months, we have had at least 4 general motors full size trucks (1999 suburban, 1997 chevy silverado, 1998 silverado, 1999 silverado) have speed sensors fail, causing the abs to come on at slow speeds when braking. at first, we thought that this was just an inconvenience, but i was recently test driving a 1999 silverado, and when i pulled into my driveway, i was not able to stop and drove right into the garage. fortunately, i was not stopping to let a pedestrian cross the street, because i would not have been able to stop and could have caused serious injury. this is a dangerous situation, and if i have experienced this problem on 4 vehicles, there must be many more on the road with this same problem. *la

Brake lines developed corrosion. as a result, brake pedal went to the floor, and the brake line broke. with the brake pedal depressed and going over a speed pump consumer was able to coast to a complete stop. *ak *mr

The gas pedal sticks. i have to clean my throttle body out with cleaner about every 1000 miles. even after a cleaning it still sticks a little. this is a safety concern, because i have to use more pressure on the gas pedel, then it unsticks and the truck lurches foword with no control.*ak

1999 chevrolet silverado which i purchased on 01-06-2001, with 25,587 miles on the odometer reading. brake lights have quit working on 3 different occasions. third light (cab stop light) works. blinkers work,and back up lights work. all fuses are good. replaced break light bulbs. first occasion, i was pulled over by the police advising me my brake lights were not working. the dealer(huffines chevrolet stated that a switch in the steering column had to be replaced. vehicle was under warranty but i had to pay a $250 deductible. second occasion i had to pay $280 and vehicle was out of warranty. third occasion, it has been only six months since last repair was made. repair has not been made of this date 11-13-03. still trying to find what is causing the break lights to be defective for the reason that expenses for this same problem and for the third time is unsatisfactory. *la

Abs wheel speed sensors 1999 chevrolet silverado - abs kicks in when slowing to low speed (no abs or brake lights come on). very dangerous! you have no control of the vehicle when this happens. i called several local chevrolet dealerships about this problem and they are so familiar with the problem that they can tell you right away how long it will take to fix and how much it will cost (just by me telling them what the vehicle is doing). i was pulling into a parking lot, going less than 5 mph and the truck did not stop, i bounced off of the curb - due to the abs kicking in when it did not need to. if i was slowing for traffic, i have no doubt that i would have hit the person in front of me! this is a very common problem (i have since researched this problem on the internet) and a serious one - this needs addressed by chevrolet as soon as possible. my truck only has 57,000 miles on it - the cost of repair will cost up to $800 or more. the truck is unsafe to drive. any response to this problem would be greatly appreciated. thank you. *la

1. abs motor started running while driving, then kept running, even when vehicle was shut off. 2. engine turns over but is hard to start if it sits longer than 15 minutes and less than 6 hours 3. while idling, engine occasionally shakes and sounds like it's going to die. *la

My father-in-law pulled up at work. he turned the truck off and he heard a noise under the truck near the drivers door. he looked under the truck to see what was making the noise and found the abs pump still running. he had the mechanic at the job site look at it and he disconnected the pump. the abs light as well as the brake light came on but the truck was drivable. he told me about it and i did some research and found that it is a very large problem! chevrolet is refusing to recall the part and putting the general public in danger. if the abs fails during bad road conditions everyone is at risk. the occupants and the other drivers on the road. this needs to be put into a force recall by the nhtsa for the safety of the general public. there should not have to be deaths on the road before safety issues are addressed. please act swiftly in this matter before the deaths start showing up from this issue. *jb

Throttle sticks in the closed position. you then need to push it very hard to go. sometimes it causes you to lurch out in traffic. have paid dealer to fix once, but did not help. i am aware of 3 1999 chevy silverado trucks. all have same complaint. *la

Every time when taking off, something in the transmission or transfer case makes a loud audible noise. the truck makes a sudden jerk (when accelerator is applied) all is good during operation. when i stop again the whole process is repeated. maybe the noise is coming from rear end possibly. *jb

The abs control valve and abs control module shorted out causing the abs warning light to illuminate on the instrument panel while driving. water had entered both units, the pins of the control unit and sockets of the module unit were covered with rust, shorting the system, in some manner water entered through the control unit and caused the pins and sockets to rust resulting in premature failure.

Throttle linkage sticks, ongoing problem, itermittently, mostly sticks from idle, but recently did not return to idle, had to reaccelerate and then it returned. mechanic contacted chevrolet dealer and was told it is a problem in around 50% of the throttle bodies in this type of vehicle. refused to provide correction for problem and stated that it is a major problem.(not dealer where purchased) *la

Brakes pulsate when coming to a stop or over rough/bumpy roads. this has been happening since i owned the truck. dealer informed it was normal. in the past two weeks i have been having a problem with the abs light occasionally staying on and during the first braking where the truck will not stop and the brakes chatter or pulsates but then will work fine for the rest of the day. brake fluid is fine. *jb

After work today, i started my truck, the abs light went on, and a loud noise came from underneath the driver's side. i called my gm dealer, and he told me it was the abs module. he said a new one would cost from $400-500 dollars, plus an hour of labor. i bought it in july of 2003, spent a lot of money on accessories, and paid it off last month. just after the dealer's warranty ran out(2300 mi), i now have an expensive repair. after much research and talking with parts supply companies, this is an on going problem. when will gm make ammends with their consumers? i am presenting 12 pages of documents to my dealer. who knows, maybe they will admit there's a problem.

Dealer replaced pads and rotors twice at owner's expense, a total of $2000. *ak

When driving at variuos speeds and when applying the brakes abs pump failed, causing extended stopping distance. *ak

Abs kicks (sound and feel in the brake pedal) in at very low speed (as i came trying to come to a stop) and i loss all braking capability no matter how hard i press the brake pedal. the first time this happened, it caused an accident (hit the vehicle in front of me). i learned that by pumping the brake pedal very fast when this happens, i can regain brake control. this problem is very repeatable.*ak i finally had to pull the abs fuse to disable it. i have already had the abs control modeule replaced once.

1999 chevrolet silverado has two problems with brakes. first problem is that truck continues to go full speed after hitting brakes if there is any uneven roadway or if road is wet or if any number of other conditions exist. very scary when it won't stop. 2nd complaint is abs module went out at 34,000 miles and 42 months. was told that it was not under warranty. spent $900 to replace, did not solve any of my braking problems. it is scary to drive because you never know when it will decide not to stop. cannot identify a single date, the stopping problem has happened too many times to enumerate.

Dry and sunny conditions. anti-lock brake system caused brake pedal to go to the floor causing greatly extended stopping distance. hit the guy in front of me.

Abs comes on and stays on. when ignition switch is turned off the montor on the brakes continues to run. the only way to stop it is to pull the fuse.*ak

Consumer complained about abs brake problems. consumer was browsing around and a mechanic told him that it the first thing that went wrong with those vehicles. manufacturer or dealer were not contacted at the time of this call.*ak *nlm

The vehicle power steering sometimes locks up or becomes very difficult to turn the steering wheel especially when making a left hand turn when your foot is braking the vehicle. at times it seems as if the power steering looses power. the local dealer has looked at the vehicle numurous times and has always stated they could not find anything wrong with with the power steering even after the service manager (at the time) had the power steering lock up while he was testing the truck.

A banging noise was heard while driving. the consumer found the shock absorber mount detached from the frame and part of the frame was missing on the front left side of the vehicle. *ak *scc *jp

The drivers side seat "adjuster" that retains the front seat position when the rear seat has been accessed, failed, resulting in the inability of the drivers seat to remain in a fixed position. this condition allows the drivers seat to slide back and forth depending on accelerating or braking. the part is a white plastic (most likely polypropylene based), and is not of sufficient strength for it's job. plastics tend to get brittle with age and this may be part of the problem. even though this failure occurred while i was stationary, accessing the rear seat area, when i did attempt to park the vehicle in my driveway, knowing full well the seat was not secure, the very slightest touch on the brake pedal sent me flying forward and i banged my knee on the dashboard! this is most definitely a "safety issue" as there are 16 complaints already on the nhtsa web site for 1999 sliverado's with this same problem! i have contacted chevrolet's customer service department and they advised me to take my truck to the dealer. i told them it is unsafe to drive and would they pay for a tow? they told me i am responsible to get the vehicle to the dealer for "inspection" and then they will evaluate the problem. i said, "there is no more evaluation needed than the fact the part broke and it is unsafe" this is a safety defect and i have seen recalls issued for less serious issues. i feel nhtsa should look into this problem and mandate a recall on this problem. some owners have had this happen more than once! will nhtsa wait until someone is seriously hurt or killed before they act? *ph
