1999 CHEVROLET Malibu

Sent my complaint 13-05-2015,realized later on that I had made a mistake on the VIN number, (1G7LT51W6KY706624) the proper number has been corrected on this form.

Bought a used 1999 Malibu in 2013, after driving it for a year or so the theft system light would come on occasionally, would not be able to start the car until the light stopped flashing. While driving the car the theft system light has come on (solid) and stayed on, felt I had to push down on the brakes a little bit harder. Have called Transport Canada, they claim to have no knowledge of this problem, also the G.M. Dealership in my area have never heard of this. Sent an email to G.M. Canada they say I should call a G.M. Dealer,sent them another email telling them I would call Transport Canada they called me saying they would talk to my local dealership.( waiting to hear back from them) After reading some comments on line,I feel this is a Safety issue, especially when some people have been driving their car, the light comes on and they lose all power of their vehicle.i have mentioned this to G.M.Canada, I also told them to go on line as this seems to be a common problem. Hopefully there are some answers out there, and this can be dealt with ASAP. Thank you.

Within the last couple of weeks I\’ve noticed that the low coolant light will intermittently come on. I took the Malibu in for an oil change and the technician told me that I was leaking coolant from the intake manifold. My car is a 99 Chevy Malibu with 51,494 miles on it. When my schedule permits, I will take the car in and it will cost me around $580.00 to fix it. That is of course, if the repair finds no other problems after they take the engine apart to get at the intake. Hopefully by me, along with other people it appears, complaining, GM will order a recall on the Intake Manifold\’s \"plastic\" gasket!!!!

Windshield: whistles while driving at high speeds. Taken in for repairs numerous times and told that mechanic doesn’t hear anything wrong. Ongoing problem.Brakes: need to be replaced every year. Car seems to “chew” them up. Replaced with high quality brakes from Auto Zone. Lifetime guarantee, and replaced by myself. Transmission: When car goes from reverse into drive, car revs up as if in neutral. Finally kicks into gear, but is jerky for about 5 minutes afterwards.

Theft Light comes on and car will not start. Wait 10-15 minutes car starts fine. Problem happens about 2-3 times a month. Problem has happened when weather is sunny and hot and in perfect weather and also when it has been raining.

The main problem is that the car has had a coolant leak from the intake manifold gasket. This problem is very prevalent in this vehicle. I have spoken to many service technicians and the culprit could be the new Dex-Cool anti-freeze that is used or inferior gasket material. I have researched this problem in the internet and this is a chronic problem with a lot of GM vehicles that use this anti-freeze. The cost of the repair is approximately $600.I also wanted you to know that this car has had ABS sensors replaced twice and the fan module replaced twice. It has also had a problem of the car going into a sort of cruise control by itself, even though I do not have cruise control on the vehicle. I would like Chevy and GM to confess to these problems and pay for some of the repair.

The intake manifold gasket fails. The DexCool Coolant leaked into the oil. The bearings on the gasket are damaged. I was told that I really need a new engine, but that I could try replacing the gasket, but there are no guarantee that will work. I understand this is a common problem for most GM cars from that time frame and starting around 40,000 and that GM has even made a new part finding the original deficient.

The clear coat on the hood has came off and the paint is fading badly and starting to peel.

The car overheated for 2 years, stopped for about 6 months and has started all over again. I wrote a letter to the better business bureau and GM. Heard back from GM, they were checking into it, and that was the last I heard. I have spent hundreds of dollar on coolant and car rentals. There are too numerous attempts to fix the problem, approximately 8 or 9. I had two outside mechanics look at the problem. They would not touch the car, they stated a GM dealer should take care of this problem since it is the same problem before the warranty ran out. The engine light has been on for the last 37000 miles.

The alternator went out at 27,300 miles. Took the car to a GM dealership service center, and was also told that my intake manifold needs replacing because it is leaking oil, and corroding. Car seems to have too few miles on it to have such serious problems.

The airbags deployed without collision. Chevrolet does not want to take responsability about this matter. The inspector is saying that he thinks we hit a curb, but this is not true. We know that the airbags are only supposed to deploy in a severe front collision. We think that they are not taking responsibility for their products. This may be an issue for other driver of Cheverolets. Your attention to this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Spider web like cracks on the paint all over the whole car.A friend who owns an auto bodyshop saw the paint on my car and told me that that should not be happening to my car,it is only 3 years old. The paint job is a manufacture defect. Another autobody shop here in town attested to the manufacturer defective paint job. I called the dealershiphere in town, and the service manager referred me to GM Customer Service. GM Customer Service in turn, made anappointment to see the dealership here in town for diagnosis on the defective paint. The dealership attested verbally, to me and then to the GM Customer Representativethat the paint is a manufacture defect. I have tried calling the GM 1800 number and had gotten nowhere.My car is only 4 years old and some months. I am the original owner, never had it repainted. My friend who is an autobody shop owner has seen GM pay for the repainting many times, so now I wonder why i am having such a stressfultime getting them to own to their mistake. You guys seemsto know a lot about GM’s sneaky ways, and I would greatly appreciate any help you can give me. Thank you very much.

Overheated without warning on freeway, dealer said had leaking intake manifold gasket, and replaced. Overheated again on highway, now dealer says leaking head gaskets, maybe head repair/replacement required to $2,500. Both incidents involved trying to get out of dangerous traffic situations.

On 8/20/2001 at 46,832 miles, coolant started leaking from lower intake manifold gasket. Dealership replaced gaskets. I later found out that the original gaskets and the replacement ones were both defective parts and that GM was aware of this fact. Now, on 3/12/2004 at 75,600 miles, the same gaskets are leaking again. I understand that this is affecting 1000s of Chev. Malibu owners. GM has released new improved gaskets and installation procedures. However, many owners like myself had the gaskets replaced with the prior defectively designed gaskets before GM released the new improved designed gaskets. I think that GM should help pay for the replacement by way of a recall. This is a safety issue due to the fact if the gaskets are not replaced, coolant can mix with engine oil and cause the engine to lock-up while driving resulting in a crash or at least very expensive engine repair. Furthermore, the gasket replacement is a fairly expensive repair (appr. $400-$600).

On 12/31/02 I noticed a small puddlt of coolant under my 1999, chevy Malibu. I learned after a diagnostic check by my mechanic the intake gasket was leaking. After doing research on the internet, I have come to learn that this particular part failure appears to be a significant problem. It is time General Motors (GM) accepts responsibility for their poor design. It is time for GM to admit to the problem and fix the affected autmobiles and reimburse those who have already paid.

Noticed a smell of antifreeze around my 1999 Chevy Malibu. Looked and found the intake manifold gasket was leaking antifreeze. The car is driven by my wife, and thankfully has not left her beside the road. Will replace the gaskets on my own, will have the old parts available. Found a lot of people with the same problem. And if no problem why did GM redesign the gasket (part# 89017279). Why also is there a service bulletin on this dated March 2003 (# 03-06-01-010). Why has not a recall not been started. This problem could start a fire in the engine bay, and a whole list of other things.

My cars check engine light blinks and it shakes and almost quits, 3 out of the 4 windows just stop working.

Leaking oil for no apparent reason- upon check at garage advised of intake manifold leak that if not repaired will result in 3.1L V6 engine damage – auto repair shop advised that Malibu’s are infamous for this problem – advised to save receipts in the event of a recall & to write letter to Chevy to advise of dissatisfaction.

In march of 2004 the cam shaft broke requiring the motor to need rebuilt or replaced at a cost of 1800 to 3000 dollars. Car has only about 83000 miles on it.

I was sitting still in traffic when the drivers airbag came out without warning. The bag then exploded with a terrible odor and smoke/particles going everywhere. The vehicle has never been in an accident and there should be no reason for this to have happened. I’ve called the dealership where the vehicle was purchased with no response, although he stated he’d never heard of such a thing and would make it a top priority. I feel “at least” the airbag should be replaced with no charge. If I had been driving rather than sitting, I could have killed myself or another driver as would have lost control of the vehicle. I have had several problems with my car. These are the only ones with receipts that I can find. As is stated above I had to get a new engine at 84,000 miles! I kept the oil changed regularly and added fluids. I have had three alternators and a new battery. I had to replace the a/c control head. I don’t have the igntion switch above that I had to replace. I had to get 2 water pumps, a new intake gasket and a new radiator cap. My CD Player still doesn’t work half the time and after I start the car it will drain in electrical power after I shift it!

I bought the car on the third of December by the end of the month it had broken down twice.My water pump was leaking two weeks after I bought the car, causing it to overheat, I took iy back to the dealer and the salesman sain the the top on the raidator was what was causing it to overheat. So they gave me the car back and two weeks later the car overheated and blew a head gasket.

fuse #48 to the fuel pump injector Continues to blow we replace it sometimes, it will start and some sometime it don’t the mechanic at the dealer ship says that the 1999 chevolet malibu needed a fuel pump so he replaced the fuel pump the fuse still blowed out the day I picked up my car. they came and took it back to the shop. i have been having this fuse blowing problem since december of 2002. no one has been able to solve the problem please help me if you can. failure of lower intake gasket on engine. had lower intake gasket replaced and valve cover gasket had to be replaced.my mechanic was also doing a Buick at same time for exact same problem and stated a common repair for him!

Every time it rains hard the rain comes in under my driver side under seat,if its alot it also goes to the back behind driver side.The dealer said it was the weather stripping and replaced,it happened again they repaired the back weather stripping,but the rain continues to come in

both rear tail lights were not working dealer shrugged it off as if were my fault, but after reading many of the complaints about the rear tail light assemblies that it was the cause of the lights overheating and cracking the lenses and also melting the sockets so you could not replace the bulbs. I was stopped by an officer because my tail lights were not on, after just replacing them the day before. I cannot afford to buy new tail light assemblies as they are $ 325.00 each and I am a disabled person on a fixed income. Every time I go out I am afraid of someone hitting the rear end of my car. I feel like a prisioner as I can”t go out at night. as my tail lights do not work. My car is necessary as I need it to go to the Dr.s and I use a walker ( back problems ) to get in and out of the house and stores. I can only go to the stores that have scooters in them. I REALLY DEPEND ON MY CAR.

Anti-theft light is continously coming on over and over again lasting for an indefinite period of time.Continous problems with ABS lights mal-functioning.

Air controls switch back & forth from fresh to recirculate.Car has refused to start twice & antitheft system activated.Intake manifold leak upper and lower. I had the gasket replaced and GM Canada paid for the labor and I paid for the parts, approx $180 Canadian. I believe there was 78000 Km (48,000 miles) on the car at the time.Seatbelts are slow to retract.Clunking noise in front end, they can’t identify or fix.Recall on rotors caused pads to fail.

Air conditioning Control problems dealer insisted nothing wrong never repairedTires; worn out at 16000 dealer insisted that that was normal fought to get them to replace only 2 tires Engine: intake manifold gasket went out never experienced the problem in all the cars I ever owned 978.00 later. Engine 3 months later presently engine has serious internal engine rattle, lose of power don’t know what is wrong yet there was no indication of problem oil was clean no temp problem just blew last week towed to the house Brakes; had to change both front calipers could not re use them needed new ones when doing brake job would never buy a chevy product ever again!!!!

Air Conditioning – electrical failure, would flicker on and off.Engine – Head Gasket, faulty. Was replaced.Power Window – Regulator and motor faulty, the window just stop rolling up and down, did not show signs of faiure till it happened. In shop right now, not covered under manufacturer warranty.Other – Cooling system, uses the infamous Dex-cool coolant. The engine gets hot every time I drive it. Hot meaning two bars above middle. It usually resides in the middle. The radiator cap has been replaced twice and the head gasket was also suspected of being a problem related to this. The problem still exists and is going to the dealer tomorrow for another inspection. The worst time it occurred was after the head gasket had been replaced. The vehicle ran fine for two months. We took it on vacation to Lake Powell when the problems occurred again. The engine started to get hot. I turned off the A/C and turned on the heat. This was able to get the engine driveable without causing damage to it. My worry is that this will happen to my wife on the freeway or driving home to see her parents. Had this occurred the first time with just her in the car she would not have known what to do and would have been stranded.

3/18/03 – Malibu is diagnosed with an intake manifold gasket failure. The vehicle was losing coolant, but there was never any signs of leakage on the driveway. An independant shop diagnosed the problem. A little research on the internet revealed that very many other GM owners were experiencing the same problem. We attempted to get assistance in paying for the repair from GM, but they refused. The design of the gasket system combined with Dexcool coolant appears to be faulty.We also have a cronic problem with the braking system on this vehicle. About every 12000 miles the brakes need to be replaced, the rotors are warped and the pads are bad. So far, GM is picking up all those costs because the problem was reported while it was still under warranty. Through the internet we also discovered that many Malibu owners have the same problem.

My 1999 chevy mailbu has had many problems. i will start with the 2 fuel injecters replaced 2 months after purchasing. the car begin to run rough then would have problems starting. then there was the altanator, the thermostat, the head and intake gaskets and the numurous electical problems. the electrical problems still cannot be solved after numrous tripsto the repair shop. most of the problems have been corrected on more than one occasion. as a consumer i hope you will help us malibu owners who are in destress. i know the auto companies are in financial trouble but that still does not excuse making an unsafe auto. i am afraid enough not to drive my car. i feel i put my family and myself in danger taking thsi car on the road. i hope you will help correct this problem. i feel my only next option is to contact a lawyer over my legal rights.

Blower motor does not work at any speed,no fuses or relay are bad or blown.no power at relay by blower or blower itself.it worked friday,saturday when started did not work.also when turning left some dumb bell sounds.

I was getting out of my car and i left it running and the air bag deployed and i didn't hit anything i was wondering if there was any recall on this particular model

Takata recall: my sons antitheft constantly turns on causing the car not to start or shut off and disables his keyless remotes which than need to be reprogrammed. after searching online i was able to find a way to get it started due to many people having the same issue had some tricks. my son is in college and has been stranded many times due to this malfunction. he's had 2 accidents where the car won't fully stop causing him to hit a car. his ac light constantly shuts off making the ac not work proper. this is the worse car!

Takara recall ..front and passenger airbags did not deploy in accident. i was stopped in traffic when a car struck me from behind going highway speed , impact caused the car to get stuck in my trunk pushed me down the highway sideways and stuffed the nose of my car into the guardrail breaking the guardrail , quick thinking saved our lives ( my husband was in the passenger seat )i saw the car coming full highway speed and nosed my car into the breakdown lane to avoid getting stuffed under the truck infront of me. the car was a complete loss, i ended up with a concussion, torn rotator cuff, fractures in my right arm and right knee, chronic headaches, and paranoia of driving.. luckily no one was in the backseat because the rear seat broke from impact with the spare tire.

Started my drive to work in the took a left turn, then applied brakes and the pedal went to the floor. thankfully i was still going slow and didn't panic, put the car in neutral and slowly applied the parking brake. parked the car and opened door and looked under car. could see brake fluid near rear left tire. applied brake again and could see brake fluid streaming from the metal brake line. clearly a failure of the brake line. corrosion caused the unsafe condition. do not have pictures but i will be taking some as soon as i can get the car on a lift.

I located a recall that my car has not been fixed and took it to the gmc dealer in laramie why where my car sat for 2 weeks and endless calls no call back for the ignition recall and other issues that my car had i have emailed and called and all i have gotten was a bill for non sence and headacks and nothing has been fixed on the car and i have lost money and time because they wouldnt fix the recall or even knolaage the problem. just un professional and un reasonable people that again would not even take the time to talk to me about the recall just let me loose my job... again the auto place is gmc laramie and the rep that would not give me the time about my car is rich!

Vehicle was unable to pass inspection due to tire (tread) separation on all 4 bridgestone potenza 's inspector pointed out that all 4 tires were cracked throughout the entire circumference on all 4 tires and dangerous/hazardous to drive on. had to purchase new tires in order to pass inspection... have taken photos of all the tires... tires were purchased in oct, 2010 and replaced in nov, 2015 -- tire had a total of 24,183 miles on it... and still has plenty of tread left.

This could be a significant safety issue. (will the alarm initiate itself that is located directly behind the key cylinder lock causing the vehicle to die while driving)? this has happened twice in the last month... apparently this car has a anti-theft feature not mentioned in the user manual (mentions a alarm for the car radio, but not the car itself). my car would "not start" because "it" thought i was stealing my own car while trying to start the car. according to chevrolet there is no way to turn it off or reset it manually (you just have to wait until the alarm goes away), the chevrolet dealer said unit must be replaced (which would cost around $350.00 to $400.00 which i refuse to pay). regarding safety -- what would happen if you need to move the car for some reason or another in an emergency and the anti-theft light starts blinking? (no way to disable the alarm) -- need to wait... first time it took over 8 hours, the second time it took less than 1 hour for it to reset.

Ignition switch has been getting loose and difficult to turn on for a long time. received ntsb recall letter about unintentional key rotation for the 1999 chevy malibu. i followed the ntsb instructions and removed the key from the key ring. on april 21, 2015 the chevy dealer glued a plastic housing to my keys. after receiving my keys back i could hardly get the key to rotate the ignition lock, i had to jiggle the key quite vigorously to get the ignition to operate. four days later the key fell out of the ignition and the engine shut down while i was driving about 40 mph. although difficult to steer and brake i was able to safely bring the car to the side of the road, locate the key on the floor and after reinserting the key restarted he car. i had a roll of tape in the glove box and i used it to tape the key in position. no further difficulties. on april 27, 2015 i replaced the lock core successfully. the recall fix for this problem is not acceptable or safe. i knew the ignition lock was getting bad but was not aware that the engine would shut down if the key fell out. this fix gave me a false sense of security that a problem was taken care of. when i took the car to the dealer i thought they would replace the lock core and keys and not just glue a housing onto my worn-out keys. my replacement of the lock core solved the problem the way the dealer should have. a letter needs to go out to all that received the recall letter that this is not an acceptable fix if the lock core is not replaced. when the dealer showed me the fix i laughed at the time and said you have to be kidding me that i've wasted 1:45 of my time waiting for the glue to dry. i do not know who thought this would solve anything or approved it but i think they are an idiot and should be fired from any position of responsibility for the safety that these recalls are suppose to address. *tr

It's been happening for a while & in recent times more regularly. while driving you can feel the steering toughening it up making turning difficult. once car is pulled over steering returns to normal. parking gets tough. fluids are fine. car is riddled with engineering gremlins that rear their heads in the most inopportune time. most have simple & straight forward solutions (bleeding the antifreeze system) but lack of the documentation can make things unnecessarily difficult. *tr

Passlock sensor theft system, i believe this was a huge mistake for the gm company. as a owner of the 1999 chevy malibu, and exper. the problem many times. i have reviewed many complaints on the internet about this part as it keeps the vehicle from starting and is a very expensive part to replace. it is dangerous as well as a inconvenience to many....it can take up to ten minutes for the passlock sensor to reset in which case parents may have to leave there children in the cold or reverse in the heat which could be dangerous to infants or toddlers.. many people replace the part for hundreds of dollars and in return it defects again. it causes people to be late for very important appointments such as doctors visits or even the case of (work). i believe the gm company should evaluate the part and try to come up with a solution. many people are talking about this part in which it should be recalled. as a owner of this vehicle i foresee a very big lawsuit coming about in result of injury due to the sensor not working properly. it causes more problems with the owner than it does with thieves that is supposed to be working against. *tr

I bought this car from a private owner not a dealership. the only problem it had when we bought it was the fuel gauge did not work. now almost a year later i have multiple problems. the worst is while driving down the road at 65 mph my car just shuts off, no warning, the steering locks up and this happened with my 2 children in the car it was very scary. then while sitting at a red light when i got ready to drive it died on me again. each time i have had to pull over, sit for a few minutes, then try to restart and it usual does until dec. 2. it died and now it will not start. it will crank, the fuel pump is working and i have spark. other problems: while checking oil one day i leaned against car and it shocked me; brake lights work when they want to; cannot lock doors from drivers side; coolant has to be refilled every week (no leaks have been found); trunk is not wanting to open with button or key; radio/antenna gets 1 station; a/c worked when we got it and apparently the diode or something went bad but you cannot buy just the diode. i am tired of all of these problems and have read many others like these. my main concern is the car dieing while driving down road and locking everything up. *tr

While driving the car at 35 mph., suddenly i was unable to steer it. it turns out that the sub frame of the car is cracked and needs totally replaced at approx. $1100. after extensive research, i understand that this is not a part of the car that should wear out and should not have cracked. (this could have resulted in a death or severe injury. i believe gm needs to make compensation for this repair.)

On 6 august 2010, i purchased 3 tires from ray's tire & service in st. augustine, fl 32084, having a goodyear logo touted on their invoice and a huge goodyear sign on their buildings, therefore, one would assume that tires being bought and installed are goodyear... well that's no so... while driving to cleveland, ohio suburb last monday (20 sept 10), my left front tire separated on i-75 running at approx 74 mph heading north in london, ky. had it been a woman driver with lesser driving skills, lord only knows the horrors. upon returning to town and visiting ray's tire for a rebate, i was told it was not responsible and that tire installed was a kumo tire... not a goodyear... thus, i ask those of your overseeing highway safety, is this acceptable as a "truth-in-advertising" issue? thus i ask of you overseeing highway safety, is this acceptable to goodyear corporate board of director stewardship? thus i ask, is this acceptable from a highway safety standpoint and trustworthy, the average consumer can feel comfortable with? this 84 year old ww ii overseas veteran consumer does not believe so and feels strongly you shouldn't either. *tr

Anti theft system on 1999 chevy malibu happens almost everytime i try to start the car. this disables the fuel from entering the engine and prevents the car from starting. then i have to wait 10 minutes to try to start it again and sometimes it starts and sometimes i have to wait another 10 minutes. yesterday it happened when i stopped at a farmer's market in 95 degree weather. i had to wait almost an hour in the heat with a friend of mine who has a heart condition. after trying to start it every ten minutes for an hour it finally started. i called the dealership and they basically told me there was nothing they could do about it. they could look at it but they don't know how to fix it. i searched online and found that a lot of people have this problem and nothing is being done to fix it. why hasn't gm recalled this product? i even asked them to disable the system and they said it couldn't be done. this is becoming a danger because i am a senior citizens and i never know when i will be stranded somewhere waiting for this to reset. if the dealership knows its a problem and gm knows it's a problem why can't the fix it. *tr

On june 18, 2010 i had an accident that i believe was caused by a tire failure. no other vehicles were involved in this accident and there were no injuries. the vehicle was declared a total loss by my insurance company. on june 18, 2010 at approximately 6:00pm i was driving on the pennsylvania turnpike. my vehicle was headed west somewhere between the donegal exit and the new stanton exit of the turnpike. the weather conditions were what i consider ideal driving conditions. i was in the right lane of the two lane roadway and as i was approaching a moderate curve in the roadway my vehicle pulled severely to the left, i attempted to control the vehicle by using the steering wheel and moderate pressure on the brakes. no amount of control i tried to exert was of any value and within seconds my vehicle had struck the jersey barrier on the left side of the highway and spun into a position against the right jersey barrier facing traffic. i would like to add here that i had owned and driven this vehicle for over 10 years and approaching 75,000 miles, i was completely accustomed to maintaining control of this vehicle even while driving under the worst of conditions at highway speeds. at the time of the accident my vehicle was equipped with four p215/60r15 93t yokahama avid tour s s319 bw serial no. m6orplhr1410 tires. these tires were purchased and mounted on june 15, 2010 and had approximately 150 miles on them. the immediate and severe loss of the control i experienced is the basis for my opinion that one of these tires failed catastrophically to cause this accident. my auto insurance company has researched the matter and found that there were no manufacturer recalls, investigations, or technical service bulletins relating to the conditions described. i urged them to make a physical inspection of the vehicle to determine if the tires or any other defect of the vehicle could have caused the loss of control, but they were unwilling to do so. updated ivoq 09/22/10 *tr updated 10/2811

First incident. i have a 1999 chevy malibu and in december 2009 (i believe) the front passenger side tire came off due to lugnuts snapping off. i had to replace all the lugnuts the spring on the shock and bend the wheelwell. unfortunately the parts are not available from that incident but the car only had about 77,000 miles on it. second incident. the front driver side spring wore right in half and broke just before getting into the car. i had to replace the whole front strut and i do still have the parts. the car has about 80,000 miles on it. *tr

I bought a 99 chevy malibu for my daughter. only 55,000 miles on it. the vehicle all of a sudden started acting up, lights flashing, power locks going crazy locking and unlocking, all the gauges on the dash are going crazy, vehicle ended dying and wont start. bought a brand new battery $80.00, then purchased a alternator $150.00 vehicle still not running correctly , vehicle ended up not running at all , had the vehicle towed to a gm dealer and they put the veh on diagnostics (charged $95.00) and was told that cannot run diagnostic because there is an electrical problem....fixed that problem ($300) and the vehicle still wont run because of the anti- theft lockout system failure (which i mentioned to the dealer, because of doing research on the internet) i have read online that there are several (more than several people) that all have the same issue with this vehicle, but are being taken for a financial ride with the repair facility not being able to figure out the problem and replacing part after part and the vehicles still don't run. gm obviously has been aware of this problem and the consumer is stuck to foot the bill with a obvious defect that they included in this vehicle. i really would like to know what it takes for a recall on a part that the manufacturer is fully aware and has done nothing to fix the problem, other than charge the consumer $$$$$$$ to fix their mistake. i have read over and over how people are stranded with this vehicle all because of a defective part : anti- theft lockout system failure. *tr

The subframe of my 1999 chevrolet malibu suffered corrosion to the point where it needed to be replaced. this is a very unusual failure of the suspension system. the area round one of the bolts holding the subframe broke off due to corrosion, causing the vehicle to not be able to be steered properly (could not turn right more than 10-15%). if this had happened while i was driving at any speed, it very well could have caused an accident (the component broke while i was attempting to parallel park). recently hyundai recalled a number of vehicles due to the same damage for those residing in the salt belt (i happen to own a hyundai involved in the recall). based on the damage my malibu suffered, i believe that the issue of subframe corrosion for those in the salt belt may go beyond the hyundai recall. *tr

1999 chevrolet malibu sedan with about 70,000 miles on odometer. a similar problem to that described in your nhtsa action number pe03031. within a few hundred yards of starting up the car and leaving my home, there was a audible bang and the passenger side macpherson strut coil spring suddenly fractured and the broken spring end penetrated the front tire inside sidewall leading to a blowout. i did not travel over any kind of bump or pothole. fortunately i was traveling at a low speed and the loss of control did not cause an accident. it was winter conditions (salted roads) with an air temperature of around 20 deg.f. i feel that this was a design flaw structural failure in the suspension that should never have happened as it could have been extremely dangerous. i am having both front strut assemblies and a tire and rim replaced at considerable expense. *tr

This is the 2nd chevy that i've owned whose brake lights fail (center brake light continues to work) to illuminate due to a faulty turn signal switch. although the turn signal, cruise control, wiper control, etc. work fine, there is something internal to this turn signal/multi-function switch that suddenly causes the left and right brake lights to not illuminate. the driver is unaware of the problem until another driver on the road brings it to their attention. there are numerous gm car owners who complain of the same problem on the internet, yet gm has not offered to replace this switch for the owner. the dealer wants $170 for the part and charge 2 hours labor at $90/hour for a whopping cost of $350 + tax and only offer a 12-month warranty for their parts/labor. to me, this is a very unsafe condition that gm fails to recognize by recalling or simply repairing free of charge. apparently, gm says the left/right brake light switch is wired through the multi-function/turn signal switch so the cruise control will cancel once the brake pedal is pressed, but that feature still works even though the brake lights don't illuminate! other car manufacturers' cruise control switches off when the brake is pressed, yet they don't have the issue of the multi-function/turn signal switch failing internally causing the left/right brake light to not illuminate. please do whatever you can to get gm to replace this poorly designed switch, free of charge to the customer. it should be noted that both this 99 malibu and 96 monte carlo were both very well cared for by us and still, these brake lights failed with less than 100k miles. thank you. respectfully, scott steffes *tr

On august 24, 2008 my 1999 chevrolet malibu was driven less than a mile and the passenger side front coil spring broke. on august 25, 2008 i took the vehicle to bob sumerel tire co. for repair. the spring appeared to have broken at the top first ring. the spring was replaced. i have the remainder of the broken spring. the top part that broke off has been lost. i noticed there are at least two other reported instances of this that were previously investigated by the nhtsa but no recall was issued. this could have resulted in severe tire damage and accidental injury. *tr

I was installing our infant car seat and found that neither of the seatbelts in the back seats that have shoulder harnesses lock when you pull the belts out all the way. we purchased the car used last december. there was only one owner previous to our purchase. we did not realize there was a problem with the seatbelts until now because we had not installed a carseat until the birth of our daughter this summer. i cannot properly secure our child's carseat when the shoulder belts do not lock. i cannot get the shoulder belt to lock, so i cannot install the carseat. i took the car to a local garage and was told there had been a recall on some of the models for this exact problem, but i don't see there's one for our make, model and year. i am contacting the local dealership monday morning to get the belts repaired/replaced. *tr

Driving at 35 mph, the spring fractured on the front left strut of a 1999 chevy malibu with 19000 miles. the break caused a huge bang and the front of the car dropped. luckily the sharp part of the break did not puncture the tire, damage the brake line or break the tie-rod end. the spring did indeed contact the tire and wore the epoxy coating off, but again, did not puncture the tire. i had the two front struts replaced and saved the broken one and the receipt for verification in case there is a future recall. i have seen that this problem has many complaints and i can say that this is a defect in the steel that was used to make the spring....not a corrosion problem. the spring is covered with an epoxy coating and where it rubbed off, from contact with the tire, the steel looked shiny new. *tr

I just filed a complaint, odi# 10234547, 2 days ago on the front strut spring breaking without notice and after replacement of the front struts, i took the car to a local repair shop for an alignment and nys inspection. i receive a call from the mechanic stating that he cannot do the alignment and inspection because both rear strut springs are broken. this car has less than 20k miles on it. this is obviously a defect in the steel used to manufacture these springs.....with many, many complaints filed.....yet no recall....it will continue to happen to these cars and the pontiac grand am, which is basically the same car. will tragedy have to strike a determined amount of families before the investigation into these strut springs is reopened? i hope not. *tr

My car kept stalling and one day it didn't start at all. the dealers first sure thought it was the fuel pump and the lines, so i got that replaced. about a month later my car would stall while driving. so, i brought it the dealer again and they replaced the alternator. car ran fine again for a couple of weeks, and once again, it started stalling on me while driving. sometimes it wouldn't start, or it would start and then die on me. i brought to the dealer again and they said i needed new spark plugs. got that all done, and it didn't help one bit. now, i drove my car all the way from minnesota to new york with no problem, but the day i got here, i started having problems again. my car won't start or it will and it stalls on the through-way, which is very scary, unsafe and inconvenient! i called the dealership here, and i told them what was going on and before i even told him what kind of car it was, he asked if it was a chevy malibu and i said yes. he told me chevy knows about all this happening to almost every malibu they have and they aren't doing anything about it! he said it has something to do with the anti-theft passlock making it so the security comes on in the car and locks the car up because it's faulty. i can't afford anymore repairs and i've been in 2 accidents because of my car randomly stalling! i am glad my 6-month old wasn't in the backseat at any of those times! what am i suppose to do if i have an emergency and can't get my car started because chevy knows about this problem, yet they aren't doing any recalls?! *tr

I purchased a 1999 chevy malibu in november 2003. i have replaced the brake pads at least 10 times ($20 each time), the rotors have been replaced 3 times ($70 each time). the brakes give you no warning they just quit suddenly which has almost caused several accidents. the abs light always comes on and when this happens you can guarantee the ignition switch is about to lock up on you. the rear windows quit working, i hear a weird popping noise coming from the rear of the vehicle while driving down the highway. the anti theft system has came on 6 or 7 times and will not allow me to crank the car(once it happened while my child was having an asthma attack and i was attempting to take him to the er). if you hit a bump in the road sometimes it sounds like a small explosion in the front end and causes the steering wheel to jerk uncontrollably for several miles. i have taken this vehicle to several mechanics who absolutely refuse to work on it because of the general fact that it is a 1999 malibu, now my ignition has completely quit, actually it hung in the start position and was making my starter grind and almost catch fire, this has happened several about 15 times, but usually after jiggling the key a few times it comes undone, but not this time. my dad had to take my battery off in order to make the engine die. so now my employer got so fed up with me being late or calling in because of my car problems that i was terminated. i am a single mom with 2 children, both have chronic asthma and have to be rushed to the er with severe asthma attacks all the time, and now i have no way to take them should the need arise. the parts are going to cost me $200 and the cost of labor and now i have no job. if you call chevrolet all they tell you is to take it to a dealer and let the mechanic look at it for a fee, and then they want to charge you more than i make in 2 months, and they never even ask you any personal info so there are no documented claims on your calls. *nm

After replacing my intake gasket 8 months ago, my car still overheats. one of my cooling fans is not working. my ac level controls 1 & 2 doesn't work, only 3,4, and 5. ac shuts off on its own. my engine belt went from sqeaking to making a noise i never heard before. now my car is non operational due to a knocking sound coming from the engine. so far in the past 8 months, i replaced my intake gasket $600, replaced my engine belt cost $120, replaced my brake pads and caliper twice in the past 2 years $250 each time. now i'm looking at another major repair job. help me please

In july of 2005 i was involved in a accident due to the fact i was unable to stop this vehicle. i did not realize at the time that i had the ability to file a complaint to a federal safety organization. this vehicle has now had 5 brake jobs, the last being today. the front rotors had to be repaired because the vehicle was difficult to stop and had severe vibration during braking. the mileage on this vehicle is 101000 miles. at the last brake overhaul it was noted that the rear brakes were not working, ( the vehicle was delivered to me this way new) this problem was reported as repaired. i purchased this vehicle new from gamblin motors in apr 1999 and as i have stated 5 brake repairs in 101000 miles. in july 2005 the reason i rear ended a vehicle was i was unable to stop due to poor braking action. this vehicle has had 3 sets of front rotors and brake pads and the rotors have been turned (trued on 2 separate occasions). i have filed complaints with gm about this problem and it has been disregarded. this may be because the original complaint was because of coolant system leaks that caused damage to the engine. *nm

Front driver side coil springs failed causing vehicle control to be reduced. the spring failed after its first winding down from the top, it appears during compression the spring end contacts the winding below which probably induced a crack and ultimately propagated a stress failure. the part failed while backing out of a driveway with the steering wheel near full right turn. during the turn the spring failed. the passenger spring was also replaced and looked as failure was immanent based on a marks in nearly the same spot as the failed spring. the failed spring is currently in my possession.

Chevrolet malibu 1999. 84000 miles. in the last four years i had to replace the tail lights twice this is the entire unit which cost over $250 each i also had to replace the stop/brake light bulbs at least six times on each side. the socket that holds the bulbs keep melting and last december it melted to the point that i saw smoke coming out and when i opened the plastic socket was completely melted. as of now neither light is working. i checked in this site and nhtsa action number rq04005 indicates the following: gm in december 2004, gm will issue a special policy for my 1999-2000 alero, grand am and malibu vehicles not covered under recall 03v327. the policy covers turn signal/hazard flasher failure for a period of 10 years or 150,000 miles (whichever occurs first) to provide a no cost replacement of the hazard switch. gm will send letters to owners starting december 30, 2004. the actions taken by the manufacturer is sufficient to resolve the issues raised by this investigation. the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists. the agency reserves the right to take future action if warranted by the circumstances. i called gm as well as the local chevy dealer and they would not replace the light they claim the agreement was only for some of the 1999 chevy malibu and my vehicle [xxx] is outside the range they are covering. i was told by a gm customer service to wait and see if they recall other cars. i am very disappointed of the advice as this is a safety issue. also, the information and agreement posted on nhtsa (see above) does not indicate any exceptions. can someone investigate this please? in addition to this problem, the coolant was leaking and i had to have the manifold removed and a new gasket put in twice. replaced brake pads 5/6 times and rotors once. *nm updated 07/16/2012*js information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

I was driving on the highway to work in the morning on a clear and dry day. all of a sudden my vehicle jerked to the left and it was out of control. i managed to pull off to the side of the highway and my tire was ruptured. after getting the car towed, the dealer let me known now that the left front spring broke and punctured the tire. not only was this a very dangerous situation, but the repair is very costly, not to mention i had just gotten new tires a few thousand miles prior to the incident. i have heard this complaint before and now wonder if this could or should be a recall item??*jb

Vehicle has just reached 62000 miles. most recent incident - all dashboard warning lights came on-car died and had to be towed to dealer. replaced alternator - supposedly "common" at this mileage. six weeks prior - coolant indicator keeps coming on. dealer replaced lower intake manifold gasket and water pump. also told common in this car at this mileage. brakes done also - rotors needed replacement - again supposedly common in the malibu. *jb

Steering wheel locks up upon vehicle start and while driving, in relation to belts or steering fluid pump. results in inability to turn car during slow speeds. usually corrects itself after a minute or so. *jb

While pulling out of my car port, i heard a loud noise. all of a sudden the front passenger side of my car fell. i proceeded to go to a auto repair shop not too far from my home to have the problem checked. while in route, right around the corner from where i live, my tire blew out. there was a weird smell and smoke coming from the front right tire. i was able to pull into a parking lot to wait for aaa to tow my car to a repair facility. thank the lord, i wasn't on the freeway when this happened. the right passenger spring broke and caused the tire to blow out. had to replace the coil springs, a tie rod and struts. *nm

I was driving in slow morning traffic, more or less 20 mph when all of a sudden both driver and passenger airbags exploded. there was no crash. i did not hit anything thanks that i was driving slow. mr. dan bailey, service manager at holler chevrolet - 407-645-1234, after checking the car out, said this was the second time he saw airbags exploding without accident on a chevrolet. *nm

8/19/05 - while driving home from work, the alternator bracket on my 1999 chevrolet malibu broke with a loud bang, causing my vehicle to lose power steering; the air conditioning to stop, and the engine to overheat. i was able to safely pull my vehicle into a wendy's parking lot, although it took all of my strength to steer the vehicle. 8/20/05 - i had my vehicle towed to an independent repair shop where it sat from 8/20/05 to 9/19/05 waiting for a new alternator bracket. it was this shop that determined it was the alternator bracket that had broken. weekly calls to the repair shop were answered with, "we're still waiting on the part". a phone call to the local chevrolet dealership service dept. revealed that the independent shop had ordered the alternator bracket through them. i was then told there were no alternator brackets for my vehicle in all of ky or tn and that there was a national backorder on them. 9/19/05 - i had my vehicle towed to the chevrolet dealership to await an alternator bracket thinking that if the dealership had to look at my vehicle sitting on their property, they might be more motivated to get it repaired. 9/20/05 - my vehicle was repaired with a salvaged alternator bracket from another malibu and the alternator was replaced...no mention on my repair receipt if the alternator was new or rebuilt. while i'm am grateful for the resoucefulness of my dealership's service team, i am concerned about a used alternator bracket in my vehicle. if these alternator brackets have a tendency to break, who's to say that this used one in my vehicle won't break while i"m driving down the highway at 65 miles per hour? i am concerned that the alternator brackets for malibus might be defective, causing engine shutdown and damage when they break - not to mention loss of control of the vehicle when the power steering goes out. i am also concerned that new alternator brackets don't seem to exist when service departments need them. *nm

Both front coil springs have broke since owning this 1999 chev malibu. purchased the car new in 1999. left front spring failed within 36 months of purchase. the right front spring recently failed and penetrated the right front tire and ripping it open causing the tire to rupture.*jb

Car will not start, replaced starter, relays. dash lights come on but it won't turn over. repair shop said it is ignition switch @$254.00l. i can't afford to repair. tried to start it few days later, perfectly ok and starts everytime for about a week or two, then no warning and it doesn't start again. engine cuts off while driving even. air coditioner blower doesn't work on 1-4, only if fan on 5. fuses have started to blow. cig 4x, radio 2x. dash light "theft system" stays on at times after start and while operating. could this be any part of why car doesn't start????? my mechanic is bewildered to say the least. *jb

Small bump accident air bags are suppose to be for moderate to heavy frontal accidents. yet the air bags deployed on my vehicle when my daughter had a accident where she barley bumped the vehicle ahead of her. there was no damage to either vehicle except the air bags. in fact, she was injured more by the bags (she was dazed and had a head ache) then the bump. if it had not been for the air bags deploying there would have been no damage of any kind. if air bags are for moderate and worse accidents why are they deploying on a slight impact accident? *nm

Car fails to start more than frequently. was told to replace ignition switch, a cost of $254.00. don't think car should already need ignition replaced. car has died completely while driving on the interstate numerous times. also has something to do with if dash lights come on or just theft deterrent lights. day running lights are equal to reg headlights, all system lights turn on when car is started, no need to even turn switch on, could this be normal? mechanic installed a switch under hood that connets directlyto my starter so when car fails to start i push switch and she starts right up, he said something in column but he not able to pinpoint. steering column doesnot lock, ever! *jb

Dt: the front driver side strut spring sheared off yesterday and was flushed against the tire. backing out of the driveway at about 8:45 pm heard a loud noise and the car locked u for a second. tried to pull it off the road, and could smell the tire burning. got it to a side road, and drove it a little while to see what was wrong. finally got it to the house garage and noticed the coil spring pressed against the tire.*ak

I just got my car in december of 2004.i went to get my state inspection and the mechanic told me that i needed to replace my brake lights because they were not working properly because water had gotten into the light.i go back a couple of days later after dumping the water out of my lights and my car passes the state inspection but my right brake light does not work because of a wire shortage.

The rear tail lights on my chevrolet malibu are about to burn i can smell a bakalite smell when i open the trunk. i have been going to maroone chevy in pembroke pines saw the service rep ( mandy ramos ) complainng to him since 2000 and he said that there was no recalls on the lights. ifound out that general motors filed a confidentiality report and that way gm did not repair the lights. i disabled person and when i bought the car i knew that it had to last a long time. now i am fearful of it catching on fire. it cost me $ 25,000.00 to buy and gm has the nerve to keep ontelling me for the past 5 years that there is nothing that can be done. it could have been done back in 2000 when they requested the confidentiality agreement being approved, they knew that they had this problem. the report is ea00010 i found this out today online. the cost of the pair of lights is $ 500.00. tell me where i can get this kind of money on disability. the government is good at hiding things. maybe they can find out how i can come up with the money before i get burned alive as i am disabled.

. i bought car new. the rotors, calipers and brake pads on this car have been replaced 4 times. the passenger side tail lights have had to be replaced every year due to water getting into the assembly. the ac switch - blower resistor has had to be replaced. the first time i replaced the rotors - it only had 5000 miles on it. it has 61000 today.

I was driving my 1999 chevrolet malibu down my driveway when i heard a loud clunking noise. the front passenger side of the car went down almost to the ground. i turned car around to go back to my home and smoke started pouring from under the car. had to have it towed to the dealer where the spring and strut had to be replaced. they had broken and cut into the tire. extended warranty paid for the broken spring and strut but would not replace other side. just have to wait for it to break. i had to pay to replace the tires which had only 30,000 miles on them. the malibu has 72,000 miles on it. i bought it at 29,000 miles. have had to replace 4 fuel injectors, replace brakes, have had the blower control fixed twice, still does not operate on 1 or 2 setting, check engine light and anitlock brake light comes on and off for no reasons, replaced belt tensioner twice, serpentine belt twice, had oil leaks, has a loud tapping noise when first starting engine (was told that this is common in this car) (sounds like a valve problem to me. i am keeping this car only until the extended warranty is about to expire. it has been a lemon since day 1. this model of malibu should have been recalled. it is a danger for anyone to drive. thank god i was in my own driveway and not on the expressway with my grandaughter. no more chevrolets for me! *nm

The tail lights failed to work properly when applied. the light bulbs were changed by the driver on several occasions. however, problem recurred and had not been resolved. driver took vehicle to the dealer, but mechanic could not duplicate the problem. *ak

(1) i was driving my 1999 chevrolet malibu about 35 mph on a town street. (2)without warning, i heard a loud bang from the left front wheel. the car instantly made a sharp left hand turn into the oncoming lane. there were no oncoming cars. i was able to quickly regain control of the can and get back into my lane. i pulled down a side and looked at the left front tire and it looked normal. under the hood looked normal. i proceded home. the left front wheel had a noticable clunk over the slightest bump in the road. i went home about one mile and took the left front wheel off. i noticed the coil spring around the strut had fractured. the base of the coil spring, (the pearch it was sitting on was bent) was close to the tire. i noticed a rub in the tire was caused by the fractured spring. the fracture was clean except some corrosion was evident at the start of the crack propagation. i have photos if you want. i will also ask for the fractured spring. (3) the car had both front end struts replaced and coil springs replaced. *ak

On several occasions my car has failed to start for no apparent reason. the alternator and ignition system have all been checked out with no problems and i had my battery replace because i thought that was the cause of the problem. the very next day after having my battery replaced, it happend again. each of these times, i attempted to start my car and it would sound like it was trying to start but fail to turn over. each of these times, my theft system light was blinking. if i wait several minutes, eventually the car will start. this has happened in cold and warm weather and has stranded me and my 2 young children many times. also, now my the fuel gauge in my car has begun to fall to empty even when it is full with gas. my gauge suddenly went from 1/4 of a tank to empty a few minutes into my trip. i stopped to fill up my gas tank and was only able to put 7 gallons of gas in it when i know my gas tank hold 13 gallons of gas. this is a new problem just starting yesterday (3/16/05) but has happened every time i start my car since then.*ak

The intake manifold has been replaced 2 times on this car. we are still having engine cooling problems. it is in the shop as we speak. now they are looking at the head gaskets due to coolant leaking into the overflow. there has been numerous complaints i have found in regards to this model. why isn't anyone contacting the chevy to get this design flaw corrected and compensation for the affected consumers who were unfortunate enough to buy this particular model? *jb

The vehicle alarm went off. the consumer went to check the vehicle, upon trying to back the vehicle out of the garage, the vehicle leaned over to the right. the consumer had the vehicle towed and it was discovered the strut and the spring had broken on its own. *nm

After making buying this car, i found out what a lemon really is. one month after the purchase, the front end started shaking so bad, i could not drive over 55 on the interstate. i brought it back to the dealer who told me the rotors were a bad design. they apparently had made them too thin, which was causing them to warp during braking. after they were changed to a thicker rotor i still continued to have problems. the dealer new of several complaints with the same thing happening, and even though they put a thicker rotor on, it was still happening. i could not get help anywhere. they blew me off until there was no warranty left. i was told it was the tires being out of balance. when i went to the tire dealer, they would tell me it was the rotors. needless to say, after 6 new sets of tires, and 7 sets of rotors, i learned to deal with it. i would drive it about a month, the shaking would come back, and i would change the rotors again. this however would eventually ruin the tires after a few months, so i would replace them to. i to had the same problem with the antifreeze light coming on, and was loosing it somewhere within the motor. when my husband went to change the oil, there was antifreeze mixed in with it. i only had 6 payments left on this car, but i was tired of 5 yrs of dealing with this lemon. i traded it in! never will i own another malibu. they are junk! i now own a subaru! these dealers need to learn the secret subaru has. treat your customer good after the sale!!!!!!!!!!!!! word. of mouth is the best form of advertisement. as for the dealers i dealt with. i would not send my dog to them!!!!. *nm

I heard a really loud bang and the front of the car dropped down while traveling at 25 mph near my home. after pulling into my driveway and removing the front tire, i found that the drivers side coil spring had broken and the coil was now rubbing on the tire. the tire was slightly damaged and the car is not drivable. i am planning to have the car towed to my repair shop. *jb

Intermittently during severe cold weather, all the windows fogged up so bad the consumer was unable to see, even when the defogger / defroster is on it does not clear all the glass and causes severe visibility while driving. the dealer was notified. the dealer inspected the heater, defogger and the defroster and nothing could be found wrong. *jb

Very erratic steering when braking supposed "silent" recall; as rotors were not annealed properly chevrolet replaced rotors (i hope) and front pads condition occurred again six months later,had private garage re-cut rotors, replace pads condition occurred again three months later believe defective rotors but can't afford it, fixed income, this condition could cause severe accident if driver panics as it feels like control is totally gone. feel there should be a real recall and new type of rotors installed, i was all set to do my brakes the first time but a friend told me about the "silent" recall. i don't feel that brake problems should be "silent".*jb

I was pulling out of a parking space and heard a loud clunk following with the vehicle dropping a few inches. after i got the vehicle towed i pulled off the left front wheel and noticed the spring broke off, and there was a fracture that occurred in the first active coil above the lower isolator. the coil spring did not damage the tire, but was lying on top of the tire prior to removal. nothing has been repaired yet, and yes the old parts are still and will be available.*ak

Consumer stated his daughter's vehicle hit something with the rear bumper at a low impact of 5 mph or less, and both frontal air bags deployed for unknown reason. no injuries were reported. dealer and manufacturer were not notified. *ak

The brake light comes on for a few seconds, occasionally when the weather is warm, numerous times when the weather is cold. have had the sensor replaced, but the light still comes on after almost 6 years. very annoying!! *ak

I first noticed the low antifreeze light came on after the car was sitting for over 6 hours. after stopping to see what was wrong, the light went off. after getting home, i looked at the engine and noticed a collection of antifreeze pooling on the engine, and much sludge collected on the engine. i refilled the antifreeze reservoir and took the car into bob montgomery chevrolet, louisvile, kentucky. they indicated that the intake manifold gasket needs replacement, which is what i figured after doing some research online. apparently, this problem has been reported before by over 1100 car owners, and is a design flaw with this particular engine. moreover, some research indicates that the design has not been corrected, and therefore can be expected to reoccur. my problem first occurred during the first week i owned the car, fall of 2000. this incident was repaired under warranty by uebelor chevrolet, jasper, indiana, and has not recurred until now. this complaint should be added to the large group that came before it. *jb

Water light coming on intermittently - taken to dealership 3 times for repair. after warrenty,car regularly overheats and the light came on and book said 'coolant' problem. i had radiator flushed and filled with antifreeze. car now continues to overheat. mechanics (3 so far) said this is a common problem with chevrolets. cost would be $800 - $1,000 to repair leakage around lower intake gasket. i believe if this is a common problem with chevrolets and it will continue to happen yearly, chevrolet should be responsible for repairs.

For over a year now, my 1999 malibu has had its check engine light on intermittently. it will stay on for months at a time and go off occasionaly. it was diagnosed by a chevrolet dealer to be the air pump which i had replaced for approximately $400. the light is still on. i have had it diagnosed again, but the mechanic cannot seem to find the problem. i am now told that there is going to be a new law passed which will prevent me from getting an inspection with my check engine light on. if the dealer can't figure it out, i do not understand why i should be penalized and have to spend additional money for them not to figure it out. i also have my abs light coming on constantly now for the past 6 months. the diagnosis showed it was the abs sensor which was replaced and the light is still on. i took it back and it was diagnosed again. i had to have both front wheel bearings replaced ($500) at 55,000 miles, which includes new sensors. the light is still on. i am now planning on taking it in for another diagnosis. *ak

The rubber molding around the back light encasing is loose, so water is constantly seeping in causing the back lights to stop working. this is an ongoing problem. i have to constantly change out the bulbs. my brake light in my window is the only one working at this time.*ak

I have contacted gmc chevrolet division via their customer service line to no avail. i have several pages of documentation that supports the vehicle i drive(1999 malibu) is one that chevy should be ashamed to attribute to the "made in america" caqmpaign. i have had to replace on seven occasions the rear stop/tail lights. the bulbs burst, they simply stop and as of 08/14/04 i have replaced yet another set of bulbs except this time the lights failed to work at all. the worker at napa auto store in riverdale georgia even checked the fuses and found no fuse blown; he even showed me the fuses as he pulled them. additonally i have had to replace the intake manifold gasket and the heag gasket;this is a common problem with these vehicles and there is a technology bulletin from gm that supports the intake mainifold gasket was/iis faulty because of the material it is made from on this vehicle on several gm mid-size vehicles. the dexcool product turns to sludge and thereby creates a leak. i read in the atlanta journal constitution that your agency's intervention has prompted gm to recall the chevrolet malibus from 200-202 (?) to correct the rear light problem and the article stated consideration was being given to extending the recall to the 1999 model for the same problem( rear light). i really need to find out the status of this attempt becasue i currently am unable to drive at night because i will be ticketed.*ak

Multiple tail lamp failures on my 1999 chevrolet malibu. i have replaced more tail lamps than i can remember. while replacing them the last time i noticed that the place where you plug in the lamp was starting to melt. i think this is a hazard. the lamps are not burned out when i have to replace them. they just don't make contact with the contacts after a while. i have to put new ones in to get them to work again. this last time i almost couldn't get one to work. *ak

Within the past year we have had multiple system failures with our 1999 chevrolet malibu with 47,000 miles. the intake manifold gasket has leaked, the brake pads, rotors, and wheel cylinders were repaired, the theft deterrent system and abs warning lights come on repeatedly, and the alternator and water pump have failed. the passlock sensor and body control module have been replaced to address the theft system warning light and the harness and individual wheel speed sensors have been suggested for the abs warning light. chevrolet should be requred to recall the vehicle to address some or all of these problems.*ak

Have had to change brake pads 4 times since purchasing vehicle, due to the fact that the calipers are bad, specifically the right front. brakes make a creaking noise when stepping on them. *jb

While driving at 20 mph passenger side air bag deployed. *ak

Consumer's wife was driving down the street and front coil spring broke. this caused the vehicle to break down in the middle of an intersection, which was very dangerous. vehicle was towed to a private mechanic.*ak

I had frequent loss of coolant, and drips on my driveway surface. upon taking to dealer i was informed that intake gasket leaking. also i was told brakes were almost gone. at 53,000 miles this seemed excessive on both counts. the replacement of the intake gasket was about $700.00. replacing the pads and turning rotors cost $250.00. this makes the 3rd set of pads, and resurfacing of the second set of rotors since i bought the car new. shortly after the repairs the abs light started coming on whenever making a turn. brought the car into the dealer in may and was told that the front wheel bearing assy needed to be replaced. i was also told that this occurance had nothing to do with the recent brake job, even though there were no problems until i had the brake job done at their recommendation. the dealer, while acknowleding no blame paid 50% of the repair leaving me with a $200.00 bill. in little more that 30 days i have spent $1200 on critical part repairs for a well maintained car with only 53000 miles. *ak

Ongoing problems since february 2004. seems to get worse as time passes. abs and emergency brakes lights warning comes up at the same time either during driving or 10-15 second after starting car. when this happen, power windows locked up. also, air conditioning power light went out and don't work. sometime restart cars several time to clear but doesn't always work. problems can last a few minutes to hours or until restart cars. only worry is when driving on highway on very hot days with windows close and ac on and problem locked windows and shut a/c down. had to do this once. had to pull over and restart car to open windows. not sure if this is related to a/c switch problem. a/c turn off/on at will. was fixed once before but problem reoccured. also have problem with brakes, ac smell, rotors warped... same reoccuring problems as many other 1999 malibu owners had. have problem check but technician unable to pull error codes from it. been to a few places to have problem checked, get charge for diagnostic but no one seem to know what causing it. because problem is intermittent, make it even harder. *ak

Lost of control of vehicle three separate occasions. vehicle pulls to the left into oncomming traffic. on three separate occasions my chevy malibu has lost control while changing lanes from the right lane to the left lane. the back end has swung out and caused the car to wooble from right to left out of contol. the first time was at 40 miles per hour and i was able to regain conrol over the vehicle. the second time was on the highway at 55 miles per hour and i hit a guard rail with only small damage to the bumper. the last time was a week ago and was the most serious. i was changing lanes from the middle to fast lane of a three lane highway going about 65. the vehicle back end broke loose again and skidded back and forth 3 or 4 times before i lost all control of the vehicle. i hit a truck and caused unknown amount of damage to the truck and $3000.00 of damage to my car. i was very lucky that no one was hurt. i have replaced the tires four times at chevy dealerships recomendation. each set has produced the same effect, pull to the left. i have had four aliment jobs. each time the repair shop has acknowledged the pull was still there. rotated tires eight times. no effect at all. i have even had a professional body shop look at the vehicle to check for previous acident damage even though the car was purchased new. they found no accident damage, but said the engine cradle might not be in the vehicle straight and could not fix it. at this point i am ready to sell the car and buy a safer vehicle. *jb

Noticed a smell of antifreeze around my 1999 chevrolet malibu. looked and found the intake manifold gasket was leaking antifreeze. this car is driven by my wife, and thankfully has not left her beside of the road. will replace the gaskets on my own, will have the old parts available. found a lot of people with the same problem. and if no problem why did gm redesign the gasket (part # 89017279). why also is there a service bulletin on this dated march 2003 ( # 03-06-01-010). why has a recall not been started. this problem could start a fire in the engine bay, and a whole list of other things. *nm

Air controls switch back & forth from fresh to recirculate. car has refused to start twice & antitheft system activated. intake manifold leak upper and lower. i had the gasket replaced and gm canada paid for the labor and i paid for the parts, approx $180 canadian. i believe there was 78000 km (48,000 miles) on the car at the time. seatbelts are slow to retract. clunking noise in front end, they can't identify or fix. recall on rotors caused pads to fail.

Theft light comes on and car will not start. wait 10-15 minutes car starts fine. problem happens about 2-3 times a month. problem has happened when weather is sunny and hot and in perfect weather and also when it has been raining.

The consumer smelled fuel while driving. she then observed fuel dripping onto the ground while parked, the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection. it was determined that the fuel line was leaking at the fuel filter connector due to corrosion. the consumer feels the manufacturer should be 100% responsible for replacing the fuel line. the consumer has had other components fail on the vehicle. all four tires were replaced due to center tread wear. the front brake pads were replaced at 20000 miles and again at 41313. the driver's side sunvisor broke. both front wheel hub assemblies were replaced due to bearing failure at 41313 miles. both front brake rotors were replaced at 41313 miles. *jb *nm

Air conditioning control problems dealer insisted nothing wrong never repaired tires; worn out at 16000 dealer insisted that that was normal fought to get them to replace only 2 tires engine: intake manifold gasket went out never experienced the problem in all the cars i ever owned 978.00 later. engine 3 months later presently engine has serious internal engine rattle, lose of power don't know what is wrong yet there was no indication of problem oil was clean no temp problem just blew last week towed to the house brakes; had to change both front calipers could not re use them needed new ones when doing brake job would never buy a chevy product ever again!!!!

Air conditioning - electrical failure, would flicker on and off. engine - head gasket, faulty. was replaced. power window - regulator and motor faulty, the window just stop rolling up and down, did not show signs of faiure till it happened. in shop right now, not covered under manufacturer warranty. other - cooling system, uses the infamous dex-cool coolant. the engine gets hot every time i drive it. hot meaning two bars above middle. it usually resides in the middle. the radiator cap has been replaced twice and the head gasket was also suspected of being a problem related to this. the problem still exists and is going to the dealer tomorrow for another inspection. the worst time it occurred was after the head gasket had been replaced. the vehicle ran fine for two months. we took it on vacation to lake powell when the problems occurred again. the engine started to get hot. i turned off the a/c and turned on the heat. this was able to get the engine driveable without causing damage to it. my worry is that this will happen to my wife on the freeway or driving home to see her parents. had this occurred the first time with just her in the car she would not have known what to do and would have been stranded.

The intake manifold gasket fails. the dexcool coolant leaked into the oil. the bearings on the gasket are damaged. i was told that i really need a new engine, but that i could try replacing the gasket, but there are no guarantee that will work. i understand this is a common problem for most gm cars from that time frame and starting around 40,000 and that gm has even made a new part finding the original deficient.

3/18/03 - malibu is diagnosed with an intake manifold gasket failure. the vehicle was losing coolant, but there was never any signs of leakage on the driveway. an independant shop diagnosed the problem. a little research on the internet revealed that very many other gm owners were experiencing the same problem. we attempted to get assistance in paying for the repair from gm, but they refused. the design of the gasket system combined with dexcool coolant appears to be faulty. we also have a cronic problem with the braking system on this vehicle. about every 12000 miles the brakes need to be replaced, the rotors are warped and the pads are bad. so far, gm is picking up all those costs because the problem was reported while it was still under warranty. through the internet we also discovered that many malibu owners have the same problem.

Leaking oil for no apparent reason- upon check at garage advised of intake manifold leak that if not repaired will result in 3.1l v6 engine damage - auto repair shop advised that malibu's are infamous for this problem - advised to save receipts in the event of a recall & to write letter to chevy to advise of dissatisfaction.

Windshield: whistles while driving at high speeds. taken in for repairs numerous times and told that mechanic doesn't hear anything wrong. ongoing problem. brakes: need to be replaced every year. car seems to chew them up. replaced with high quality brakes from auto zone. lifetime guarantee, and replaced by myself. transmission: when car goes from reverse into drive, car revs up as if in neutral. finally kicks into gear, but is jerky for about 5 minutes afterwards.

Fuse #48 to the fuel pump injector continues to blow we replace it sometimes, it will start and some sometime it don't the mechanic at the dealer ship says that the 1999 chevolet malibu needed a fuel pump so he replaced the fuel pump the fuse still blowed out the day i picked up my car. they came and took it back to the shop. i have been having this fuse blowing problem since december of 2002. no one has been able to solve the problem please help me if you can. t. reynolds

On 8/20/2001 at 46,208 miles on my 1999 chev. malibu, coolant began to leak from the lower intake manifold gasket. dealership replaced gaskets under gmpp extended warranty. now on 3/12/04 at 75,600 miles, the replaced gaskets are leaking. after the first repair, i discovered that the original factory gaskets along with dex-cool coolant were defective. at the first repair, still defective gaskets were used to make the repair. after this first repair, gm released a newly redesigned gasket and procedure to address this issue. i feel that there needs to be a recall on the issue due to the number of consumers who are experiencing this same trouble. this could become a safety issue should the gaskets completely fail and allow coolant to mix with the oil. this would cause engine failure while driving, possible resulting in a crash.*ak

36000 miles plus....ever since i purchased the car. was searching the web and found this site so i decided to add my two cents worth about my malibu. replaced front brakes (drivers side 3 times - due to caliper) and rotor twice. engine gasket problem - overheating. still have problem with fan motor control settings 1 and 2. engine misfiring - had injectors cleaned twice and replaced entire ignition system. have a rattle in the front for the last 20000 miles. car has failed to start around 8 times. engine has died multiple times after starting and sometimes while in motion. abs light and brake light problem. theft system light occassionally lights up. looking forward to a class action suit. would rather settle for an admission by chevrolet/gm and compensation for some replacement parts and labor. this is the worst gm product i've ever owned and due to the other complaints i've read on the internet, this volume of complaints is way to high. *ak

Ea 03021 - while traveling on 3/7/04 the drivers side front coil spring broke on my 1999 chevy malibu. this broken spring rubbed against the tire and caused it to pop. it also ruined the drivers front strut assembly.*ak

Automatic transmission housing is coming apart due to the gears grinding together. this condition causes transmission fluid to leak. vehicle had not been to a dealer for service. *ak

Have to replace brake pads/rotors every 5,000 miles. i've spent more money on the brakes on this car than gas. i've also gone through 5 sets of tires. replaced wheel hub bearings, and still, after replacing items, the vibration, shaking, instability comes back. also, problem with abs. light comes on and stays on. i've had it looked at 6 times and dealer can't find problem. each time after seeing dealer, it goes out. but then comes back on again in a few days. have problems braking. i've had to stop quickly, and the brake pedal goes to the floor, and car won't slow down. it's as if i'm trying to slow down on a sheet of ice, and i live in florida!!! back taillights constantly melt around bulbs. i've had to replace the tail light assemblies in both. is chevrolet going to do anything about these problems?? i've read that a lot of other people are having these same problems. does it take a few people's deaths to finally get them to care? come on chevrolet, i used to believe in you, but now i'm questioning the cars. this is the 6th chevrolet car i've owned. strongly thinking of never buying a chevy again. *jb

I have numerous complaints regarding the brake system of my vehicle. i have had my car for just over a year now and i have had 3 wheelbearings done, the brakes changed twice, the rotors changed and turned, the calipers changed and more. the calipers continue to make a horrible crunching noise and no one wants to take responsibility for it. the dealer says its a manuafacturing defect and chevy says it was under warranty when i bought it, 12 days, and it was never brought into a chevy dealership so there's nothing they can do. well, its crap and i know there are at least a hundred other people with the same problem so if you have a 1999 chevy malibu with defects call me and lets sue in a class action suit because they should not get away with this. 607-397-1782

Vehicle had catalytic converter and alternator go out completely within 10k of each other. once the cat had gone bad, it caused the valve seals on the engine to need to be replaced along with the intake manifold gasket, a $1300 job not covered by extended warranty. also have had break pad problems with them wearing unevenly. the vehicle was at a chevrolet dealer for almost a week before they guessed the problem-no one actually looked at my engine to verify that the seals needed to be replaced, i was so annoyed with waiting for a diagnosis, i had another mechanic complete the work and replace the cat. these problems also resulted in a midnight tow two hours away from home since my car would not start, taking more time and money out of my hectic schedule. *ak

I myself, had to have my intake manifold gasket replaced in my 1999 chevrolet malibu. it was recalled on certain vin numbers, but not mine. a friend of mine also owns this same make and model of the chevrolet malibu and she is currently having to have the same problem fixed. i am experiences several problems with my vehicle that i saw on a recall list for a particular set of vins. i find this to be a bit strange that i am currently having these manufacture defects, as well as others that own this make and model of this vehicle, and they are only recalling a select few. it seems strange that 3 people i know experience the same problems with this vehicle, yet, there is no recall on them.

Since i've had the car, the brakes have been replaced twice, rotors replaced (also cleaned and other things-to the point they asked me to see if there was a recall on brakes and rotors). the right front passenger window will not work from the driver side to roll down but can still roll it up from there. the air conditioner button(resistor) needed replacing and then the vent button(resistor) needed replacing. also, had to replace tie rod end and wheel bearing . not to mention a water pump. we bought the car used from sawyer chevrolet with 38,000 miles on it. it now has 76,000. but within a year and a half of owning it, this is all the work we had to put into it. i've never had a car that needed all that repairing done before it reached 100,000 miles. plus we had to get new tires because they had firestone tires on them that were warping, etc. but sawyers refused to replace them and firestone did not get back to us in time before our vacation. so we put new tires on ourselves.

This 1999 chevrolet malibu was purchased in july 2001 in had a water leaking problem took 3 tries before they found it needed thermostat gasket didn't even have one in it they sold it to me .this way with a promise it had been fixed. within the first year i had the car they had to replace both front wheel bearings & strut bushings. then the alternator went out & it cause my battery to go bad overcharged it they replaced alternator but refused to re-emburse me for the battery. then ignition switch caused problem with anti-theft system would not start. had that replaced in march 2002. then anti-lock brake system went out had to have it replaced window switch very slow had to be cleaned another one not working at all now, not covered under warranty, at this time also had to have anti theft system fixed again light on all the time another bad ignition switch. also had blower motor & relay switch for heater to go out over the summer most of the interior lights have long ago burnt out & had to be replaced lock out for trunk lid also broke not covered on warranty. hub caps have lug nuts made in them that screw onto your lug bolts stripped out when took for repairs by dealer refused to replace them because they cost $500.00 for a new set. so i purchased the lug nut part & repalced it myself at a dealership for $10.00 set of 5. november of 2002 brakes & rotors were replaced in jan. 2003 brake pads replaced again in march 2003 pads replaced again in july 2003 pads replaced once again then in sept. 2003 master cylinder replaced in oct. 2003 master cylinder replaced again now it's nov 2003 & master cylinder being replaced again tomorrow.these cars have a real brake problem that needs to be fixed it's costing a fortune.*ak

Plastic intake manifold gaskets developed cracks which let the engine coolant leak inside engine. *mr general motors did admit there was a problem and there was a recall, however it did not apply to the consumer vehicle. *scc *jb

I don't know where to begin with the complaints that i have for my '99 malibu. the brake system on this car is the worst. i can't count the number of times that i have replaced my brakes. i was reading the complaint board and could not believe the number of people that had similar brake problems. you would think that the government would see some kind of pattern and make gm do something about this. i think car manufacturers should take some responsibility for the products they put out and someone should make sure that they do. i am now going to have to replace my intake gaskets because of anti-freeze leaking into the engine. i have seen over 50 complaints about this on the complaint board. i will never again buy a gm made vehicle. from now on i'm buying nothing but foreign made cars. my car is still sitting in my driveway waiting go get fixed because right now i can't afford the $400+ it's going to take to fix it. *la

Faulty cooling situation with 1999 chevy malibu. it has been getting warm, two bars above middle, on the temperature gauge. the mechanic said it was a faulty head gasket, so he replaced it. two months later, we were on a trip in the middle of the southern utah desert region coming home from lake powell when the engine started to get hot again. we were able to bring it down by turning off the a/c and running the heat. however, we were in the middle of nowhere and close to breaking down. had it just been my wife in the car, she would not have known what to do and the car would have over-heated. she drives it just to work now, 4 miles away and it gets hot in the process. it uses dex-cool coolant and also has the gm 3.1 liter v-6 engine, both have inherent problems. it has cost us more money than we have to get it fixed and cannot sell it because of this problem. i appreciate any inspection you can do regarding the gasket and the dex-cool coolant. thanks. *jb

I experience constant brake grinding, and i had the rotors turned and the pads replaced twice over the past year. recently, the calipers seized and the brakes did not work. the dealer claimed that there¿s nothing wrong -- two days after the pads, rotors, and calipers were replaced. *la

The airbags on my 1999 chevy malibu did not deploy when i was in a pretty serious accident. i have photos of the car and the accident scene. i was hit in the front by someone running a stop sign. *jb

#1 on the stock radio, which came with the malibu, the lights illuminating the radio buttons and knobs burnt out. first along the bass, treble, fade & balance turn knobs and now all the preset buttons #'s 1-6. you can't see anything on the radio in the dark now. #2 i have terrible reception of fm (some times) and am (all the time) radio stations. this has gotton worse since i owned in 6/13/02.

Intake manifold gasket leaking coolant after only 25,000 miles. numerous other complaints regarding this issue. all gm mechanics know about this issue but gm will not take responsiblity for this design flaw.

It appears the left front brake line has rubbed through causing a brake fluid loss and loss of power brake function

General motors has just announced a recall of 2000 and 2001 chevrolet malibus for a faulty hazard light switch which could result in the failure of hazard lights and turn signals. i own a 1999 malibu not subject to the recall. my turn signals do not work consistently, and my mechanic has indicated it may be the result of a faulty switch. i believe the problem is the same and that the 1999 model year should be covered by the recall as well. is there anything i can do to get this taken care of under the recall?*ak

I have to do a front brake job on my 99 malibu about twice per year because of excessive vibration when brakes are applied. this started after the original brakes started doing this and has continued. this is caused by the brake rotors not wearing evenly.*ak

A/c cuts off and blows hot air, when i press the a/c button, it will come back on, but will not stay on for any length of time. dealer replaced the a/c console in august/september 2001, and now it is out again.*ak

At about 27000mi (3000mi. service) i notified dealer of squeaking in front & rear suspension bushings. dealer sprayed lube on rear (about $100)and notified me that they would have to lower complete front end to lube front, approx $200 more. extended warranty didn't cover. at 30000 mi service dealer notified me i needed complete brake job. i inspected brakes while on lift. mechanic said he made mistake! he said that he hadn't pulled wheels of yet. said there was 80% left, repair invoice said 50% left. a little over a week later there was a puddle of trans fluid on garage floor & air conditioning smelled like urine when on, also switching itself from recirculation to fresh. took car to dealer, they replaced switch, deductible $se on extended warranty, sprayed something in outside vent (mold they said?), and tightened trans cooling line, their fault! three days later cooling leak, dealer replaced water pump, deductible $'s on extended warranty. two weeks later the rear power window actuator (motor & cable assembly) quit! i might have used this window 12 times since i bought 99 malibu ls from champion chevrolet, reno,nv. new in 12/99! all things considered, i feels like they are sabotaging my vehicle to get back at me for discovering they lied about brake job! also after reading your complaint list, i realize that i am not alone thinking that brakes, steering vibration, and reliability in general is poor on this vehicle. *ph

On august 30,2002 i was in a curve and applied the brakes and upon braking the car slid and was uncontrollable. this was the third time that this happened. the first two times i took the car to the dealership and was told that there was nothing wrong. after the accident on the third time a mechanic looked at the car and told me that the rotors and drums were out of round and should have been replaced. the car only had 41000 miles on it and had already had the rotors replaced twice. *jb

In march 2003 i had to have my rotors and pads replaced at 39,733 on my 1999 chevrolet. malibu. the rotors were warped and the pads were eaten away by the rotors. now, august 2003, my pads are eaten away again with less than 12,000 miles on them. i am afraid the rotors are warped again. i have heard many malibu owners and auto mechanics tell me there is a vehicle wide problem with the rotors and pads, yet gm (chevrolet) won't help correct the problem and help with the cost of repairing (again and again).*ak

All the windows will fog up at random times. it does not matter if the defroster is on, if it is raining or dry outside. the only thing that seems to clear the windows is to turn on the electric. rear window defogger and raise and lower the side windows several time. the fog on the windows gets so bad sometime that we will only have two round circles on the front windshield to see out of. we took it back to out dealer and they told us it was because of dirty windows. they cleaned the windows and we left, only to have them fog up again about 8 miles down the road. we have tried different things to keep the windshield clear such as turning on the air conditioner while the defroster is on and turning up the fan, but nothing works like raising and lowering the side windows. we know of someone else that owns a malibu and they have the same problem. we have owned the car for about two years and this happens several times a week except during the summer.*jb

My "99 malibu developed engine cooling problems and the fans were not working. it got too hot and trashed the engine. i dealt with gm for about a month and they finally turned me down for help because i took it to an independent mechanic who checked it out and said the transmission gasket was leaking, so they replaced that and when it still leaked they said it was the sensor to the thermostat and by that time it was too late. when i took it to the chevy dealer for a diagnostic, they said it was shot. i have known of quite a few people that had the same problem with gm cars. now, since i have been without a car for a month, i am going to get a used motor put in it. this is the only car i have.

Engine failure due to head gasket failure

Have less 15,000 miles on the car, mostly used to drive to work only about 2 miles each away. have a problem with getting the air conditioner to turn on and when used alot. seems to be a problem with the air conditioner clutch. also just having problems with fan control as the fan does not work in position 1 or 2. will check if resistor for fan control needs to be replaced. car just went out of manufactor warranty as of jan.

Had to have the module replaced. mechanic didn't know why it went but knew thats what i needed. after contacting gm they said that it was not a manufactures defect and could not give me a reason why it just went out. *jb

At 32,000 miles loud grating noise from right brake area after braking hard or braking into right turn. dealership determined i needed new brakes. replaced brake pads and machined rotors. this didn't fix the problem. 2nd diagnosis was an internal leak in power steering system. this appeared to have fixed problem. a few days later i noticed a knocking noise when braking. informed dealership but the noise stopped due to cold weather. they told me to bring it back if noise resumed. it did when weather got warmer and brake pads were adjusted (35,000 miles). right away i noticed the brakes didn't feel right. car slowed down when brakes were applied but i had to really press the pedal down to get it to stop. about 1 week later i heard knocking again when brakes were applied lightly. there was also a creeking noise from the brake pedal and a significant pull to the right. knocking noise got worse, became a thumping noise. took back to dealership. had to make appointment. (they didn't even want to listen to the noise!). the day before my appointment noise got so bad i thought my brakes were going to fall off. i took it to an independant mechanic and he diagnosed that the right rotor was warped (excessive runout). took it to the dealership armed with a printout of diagnosis from mechanic. rotor machined again (36,000 miles). i asked the service rep what could cause the rotor to warp and he said he didn't know, it could be how i was driving the car! while it was in the shop i did some research and found that brake problems are very common in this model and year and that the dealerships are quite aware of this. brakes still don't stop the car properly and are now making a slight grating noise. i can't believe there is no investigation or recall for this problem. something should be done before someone gets killed, if they haven't already. i've heard the government can force a recall if there are enough complaints. why hasn't this been done? please advise

I had my manifold intake gasket replaced and i know that gmac had a technical bulletin issued on it. i contacted gmac and they advised they would not pay for it. a couple months later my car started to make noise so i took it back where i got it fixed at and was advised i need a new engine. i contacted gmac and they didn't respond until december 24, 2002 and told me they wouldn't pay for the engine since i didn't get my car repaired at a gmac dealership. i told them when i took it to the chevrolet dealer they said i couldn't get my car in until the following week and i couldn't wait that long because i needed my vehicle so i took it to another shop. had i been told when i first called gmac i would have tried to take it to another chevrolet shop. i am paying for a car that i can't even drive and the vehicle is only 3 years old. please advise as to what i can do to have this matter resolved.

I have a 1999 chevorlet malibu with 73,000 miles. i have performed all preventive maintaince on the car. on 12/31/02, i noticed a small puddle of engine coolant under the car. i took it to my regular mechanic. i was advised after a diagnostic test i had a leak at the intake gasket. the total cost to repair was $596.00. after researching on the internet, i have learned of many owners of a general moters (gm) vechicle having similiar problems. i feel it is time for the government to step in and investigate gm. gm admits no wrong doing though there is sufficient proof to show a faulty design in the intake manifold gasket. i have done most of my own preventative maintenance as well as repair. i am familiar with automobile engines enough to know if an engine is properly designed and has the correct gaskets, sealant, and proper assembly leaks such as the one i described should be rare. thank you for taking time to read and i hope your department will work to help consumers with this problem.

When getting into the vehicle and trying to use the shoulder seat belts, they are retracting slowly on the driver's side. on passenger's side there was a hole in the door panel due to the seat belt hanging out of vehicle when consumer was getting out. dealer can't determine the problem. *ak

The stepped on brakes which disenguaged the cruise control from 40 mph to 70 mph. consumer had to hold on tight to the steering wheel due to loss of control. also, there was too much air within the tires, and there wasn't any type of suspension within the tires. *ak

I purchased this car in late june of 2002. have had no problems with it ex cept the turn signals (all of them) and the emergency flashers. they will work fine for a few days and then stop working with no warning. sometimes the turn signals will start operating in a few moments or it could be days. as for the emergency flashers. the one time i had an occasion to use them, they flashed once. after that the turn signals and the emergency flashers did not work for days. i mentioned this to the dealer that i purchased the car from when i had the car in for a oil change. no mention was made of it on the work order and the service tech said they could find nothing wrong. dt

Car had a knocking in the motor. took to dealer to get fixed, they have not fixed the problem in the last 2 tries. they first said that it was my fault for not taking car of motor. oil changes have been made every 3-4 months or 3 thousand miles. they first replaced the lifters, 2nd time it went in they replaced the timing chain and gears. now up to date they have had the car for 2 weeks and they have done nothing with it do to the fact they are waiting for the warranty place to say that they can put a new motor in. they are now saying that they are going to put a used motor in that has 42000 miles on it. till this date they will not tell me what is wrong with the car and they will also not let me see the motor it self since they have had it for 2 weeks and every thing that is connected to the motor is out of the car except the block. i personally take care of heavy equipment in the job that i do which has a $ amount around 350,000 dallors and i do oil changes, and any minnor fixing problems. it blows me away that they tell me they can not find the problem to a vehicle that i bought from them. it may sound like a piston or a rode that has gone bad. dt

The air conditioner doesn't cool properly. it seems that once my car is getting cool the air conditioner will shut off and will blow warm air. there also is a short between the recirculating air button and the outside air button. the lights will blink on and off simultaneously without even touching the buttons. sometimes an odor will come from the air conditioner. the rear-passenger door is hard to open. my rotors have been resurfaced and replaced. my brake pads have also been replaced but my brakes still grind and squeek.

1999' malibu has been in for brake/rotors times with less than 37,000 miles. same issue with1999' alero, was taken in for service 3 times for brakes/rotors, ended lease early last month.*ak

The check engine light came on after the car was ideling very rough. o'rielly chevrolet said that the #5 injector was sticking, they flushed the system & replaced the fuel filter for $207.73. two weeks later on 2-25-02 the check engine light came on again. i took to o'rielly chev. & they said it was the #5 & # 3 injector had to be replaced. the first time the #5 injector was sticking the service rep. said it was because i was using cheap gas. i changed the type of gas to chevron & after taking another trip, i had the same symptoms & after taking the car to o'rielly chev. the #5 & #3 injectors had to be replaced. the total costs of repairs for both times is $717.88. i don't recall, other than the level of octane, reading in my owner's manuel anything about using a better type of gas, but chevrolet agrees with the service manager at o'rielly's that this is the cause of the problems with the injectors in my car. i would appreciate any help that you can provide. i feel that i shouldn't have major repair problems with a vehicle when it has was only 1,181 miles out of warranty. i have a friend that owns a 2000 malibu ls & she has also experienced problems with the #5 injector, but at least her car is still under warranty. thank you in advance for your attention to this issue.

The manfold intake gasket started leaking anti-freeze and i was told i had to pay for it to be replaced. gmc is aware that it is a problem and have a technical bulletin on it. they are aware that this is a problem but have failed to do anything about it. i feel that there should be a recall placed on the vehicles and anyone who has paid for the vehicle to be repaired should get reimbursed for the repairs as well as the rental. *ak

Bought this car with 23,000 miles on it in jan. 2000. within a few months, brakes started vibrating bad ly when applied at high speeds. dealer said faulty, warped rotors and replaced them free b/c it was a manufacturer's defect. few months later, april 2001, they did it again. took back to dealer, they refaced the faulty rotors, put new pads in, charged me $300. in jan. 2002 brakes did it again. dealer gave me the runaround and wouldn't do it free, so i got good rotors and pads at parts store for $120 and did it myself. also intake gasket leaks antifreeze. chevy needs to do something about brakes and i want $420 back from them.*ak

Two-fifths of inboard pad was missing from the metal plate and appeared not to have been bonded to the plate as the metal appeared corroded in the area where the pad should have been bonded to the plate. the dealership is contacting the zone representative who is to inspect the pad and plate on february 28th. the pads were worn but not to the point that the wear indicator touched the rotors. therefore, the only warning we had of a brake problem was an unusual noise coming from the right front wheel during brake applications, and only then after driving the vehicle for a few miles.*ak

Had coolant/oil leaking from valve cover/ intake manifold. dealer replaced all 5 gaskets, oil and coolant. only have 31,000 miles on the car. also had resistor for fan control changed. blower would not operate in position 1 or 2. one month ago in january, had transmission cooling leak. dealer said it was "transmission internal wiring harness connector" leaking when i told them it was cooling line. invoice shows changed harness, which i couldnt tell it was new because it was dirty, and changed gasket in cooling line. at same time had a/c blower control unit replaced. ive had probelms with this vehicle since i bought it. tires were "cupped" after first rotation. dearler replaced 2 front tires under warranty. now i have a problem with tires/wheels after each rotation when rear wheels are put up front. said problem might be alignment, which is not covered under warranty. also have had horn repaired due to inop. dealer found wiring harness wasn't connected. had control switch changed on power drivers seat. drivers seat moves back/forth slightly when braking/accelerating. passenger-side airbag was replaced due to "squeaking" when hitting bumps in the road. had battery replaced due to acid leak eating off positive terminal. had to leave car overnight at work brakes are due replacement due to "brake fade". car is total disapointment. would trade it in, but i owe more than vehicle is worth.

There is a problem with the right rear brake light. i have needed to open the casing unit on five separate occasions to replace the bulb. within a week's time, however, the light is non-working again. it is not the bulb, but the socket the bulb fits into. the left rear brake light is now having the same problem. upon inspection i notice the bulb isn't burnt out but that there is a short or bad connection between the bulb and socket. i have on several occasions driven around with only the brake light in my rear window working. this is a definite safety issue! also, the braking system on this model vehicle is terrible. the brakes wear out around 10,000 miles and the car shimmies and shakes. before this car had 26,000 miles on it, the brakes had been replaced twice. this makes for a scary ride when the brakes are so shaky.*ak

Due to severe pulsation and steering wheel shaking when applying brakes, i had rotors replaced at 11,400 miles...dealer said they were warped. just had those rotors resurfaced at 37,000 miles....dealer and manufacturer swear normal wear and tear. i wish i knew my recourse so i don't foot the bill...the rotors are defective! also concerned about my safety in malibu...thought it was my dream car....wrong! *ak

At 13,000 miles, vehicle developed shimmy when brakes were applied, dealer turned front rotors. at 19,000 miles, shimmy returned, dealer replaced rotors under warranty. at 48,000 miles, dealer turned rotors again and pads replaced with the napa best pads, all at my expense. now at 67,000 miles, shimmy is coming back. i feel that gm should acknowledge the problem and reimburse me for these expenses.*ak

The brake lights went out. when checking the problem for repair we found that the lights failed because they had been so hot the plastic melted over the contacts. this has happened to 3 of the 4 lights, but the 4th has signs of being very hot also. the fuse should blow before these lights get this hot. this manufacturing is unacceptable. what if all the brake lights were to go out at the same time??? big problems!*ak

Brake pads replaced 10/00, failed 2/10, replaced pads and rotors2/01. car was returned to repair shop 3-4 times because i felt the brakes were not working correctly. i was told that they were normal every time. brakes locked up when i was driving 11/01. back to shop at which time i had no front brakes. they replaced pads again. took car to chevrolet, 11/01 for brake inspection. i was told everything was fine. brake lights now come on. brakes skip when applied and the rear brakes are now making clicking noise when applied and sometimes when released the brakes stick. took car back to chevrolet , 11/01 and was told that my rear brakes are hanging up. keep in mind that 2 weeks ago i was told that my rear brakes were fine. they did not have an explaination for the brake problem i have been having. i was told that the malibu does have a braking problem, but usually is fixed after the brakes are replaced once. i've had this car for 12 months and have put about 16,000 miles on it. i've gone through 3 sets of pads and and the rotars have been replaced once. most recent repair was about 2 weeks ago and i am now having more problems than i had before the repair. *ak

Purchased vehicle 5/04/01. had to return 2 days later for melted brake light sockets on left rear. bulbs were replaced. melted again within 3 weeks. went back to dealer, was told they couldn't check it they were too busy. made appointment to have fixed. they replaced bulbs and reworked socket but it still failed. they said that there is nothing else they can do. i have replaced bulbs on average every 2-3 weeks. i think they have an electrical short causing the bulbs to melt the sockets. now the turn signal and back-up lights are starting to melt. the interior dome light also works sporadically. front brakes shudder when applied and have been replaced, rotors were cut. still having shudder and extended stopping distances.*ak

When attempting to pass another car, and the car was accelerating , the engine seemed to take off on its own. throttle seemed to be stuck and car would not stop or slow down, brakes were jammed and that is when the car stopped accelerating. tow truck driver pushed tps sensor back in and thought that was the problem. dealer claims " no codes came up". *ak

Brake pads didn't wear evenly, noticable difference on upon comparison. dealership said this was normal since both sides wore the same. took to independent mechanic and he stated this wasn't normal wear. the front side of the pad was completely wore out and the back side had more than 60 % remaining wear. how can this be normal? the slides are not distributing the pressure evenly and therefore the pads are wearing unevenly. i feel this is a manufacturing defect. please help!!!! thank you. *ak

This vehicle has had several problems i'll try to list.the airbags did not deploy they had been replaced when they fixed the horn problems.completely dissatisfied with my vehicle.i'm not sure if vehicle will be totaled since the accident was 9/6/01. i believe at the very least the airbags should have deployed.i don't know who to complain to.i've replaced rear brakes and rotors,altenator,water pump,battery,horn contact replaced twice at same time had to replace air bag due to sensor behind airbag,interior door panel replaced bracket broken,oil light continued to come on often even though service dealer could not dulpicate,air conditioner not blowing hard secured blower and blower resister wiring another time had to replaced a/c control unit,engine leaking oil around intake replaced intake gaskets,rear seat sqeaked w/ passengers service shop had attempted to fix but was unsuccessful ,so as you can tell many problems!!! makes me think twice before buying a chevrolet product again.thank you

The hub caps on all chev malibus are attached with 5 plastic lug nut s that screw on to the lug nuts that hold on the wheel.the plastic nuts are covered with thin chromed metal.all 5 of the plastic lug nuts must be removed prior to being able to remove the tire in case of a flat or if service is needed.the torque needed to remove the plastic lug nut exceeds the binding strenth of chromed metral cover on the plastic lug nuts.once the cover slips its impossible to remove the hubcap and therefore the tire.3 or my 4 hubcaps had to be destroyed to be removed.each one required 30 min and lots of effort.a female on the side of the road would be in serious danger.my mechanic called their friends a the chev dealership and asked how to remove the hubcaps...their answer was that the hubcaps would need to be destroyed to get them off.this is a serious safty problem that will cause accidents or deaths of people trying to change a flat!!!

They have replaced the rotor twice (at 15k and 32k miles) and it continues to warp after 10-15k miles. service manager states it is a widespread problem but chevrolet will not take responsibility.*ak

Initially, the indication that there was a brake problem was a squealing when applying the brakes. at the time, brake pads and rotors were replaced. then, after an another 3000 miles, the vehicle developed a serious vibration upon braking. the dealer then ground down the rotor. the problem developed again when another 2000 miles were driven, and dealer replaced both front calipers. another 3000 miles have been driven, and the car has again developed a serious vibration when braking, strong pressure must be applied to slow the vehicle, and when the brakes are applied the car pulls strongs to the right and becomes difficult to control. dealer has not been able to fix this latest problem.*ak

The rear brake lights on all the malibu seem to have a common problem. the rubber seal leaks water causing the bulbs to short out or get corrosion on them causing them to be inoperable. this problem occurs every time it rains or the car gets washed.

This vehicle had both front disc pads replaced at 9,500 miles. the disk brake rotors on both sides were replaced at 10,500 miles. at 14,900 both front calipers, brake pads, and disk rotors will be replaced again. it steering shakes violently upon braking above 30 mph, any brake actuation malkes multiple noices that indicate obvious disk brake stress failure, both front wheels exhibts great quantities of burned in brake dust. this problem has been also experienced by two friends who have similar vehicles. it is obvious there is a serious, life \ safety manufacturing defect in the disk brake system. gm dealership has replaced parts without question or argument (which should immediately alert you to the fact that they are well aware of a widespread problem). there is no recall on this vehicle for this. mentioning the problem to the local dealship mechanics and service personnel produces an immediate, no-argumentative recognition that the problem and system failures obviously exist and are well known (to them). in fact, one mentioned they were saving the parts taken off the 99 malibu's for a gm enginner who was coming to inspect them. this is an extrememly serious life safety issue that has not been publicised and owners have simply be given replacement parts, only to have to replace them again and again. brakes are the first line of safety and this cars disk brakes in the front are simply unreliable. it may be that the juneau, alaska very humid environment is part of the problem. no matter, gm is dragging this out for whatever purpose. the problem is obvious. *ak

Rotors have been replace twice and machined twice in 40,000 km. brake pads have been replace 2 or 3 times. was told by the dealer and gm canada that if you drive the vehicle in the rain the rotors will warp. rotors serviced @ 10,000km 20,000 km 26,000 km and 40,000 km. tried to charge me while the vehicle was still under warranty for machining the rotors. had to complain loudly to get them covered would not cover pads. still trying to get some satifaction from gm canada. dealer would not admit there was a problem with the vehicles until the consultant called back and wanted to ensure he would not get a bad rating on gm warranty service questionaire. then all of a sudden they have had some problems with the brakes/rotors on these vehicles. *ak

I brought my chervolet malibu on 16 october 1999 it had 24,000 miles on it. around march of 2000 i noticed that the brake was going soft , making squelling noises, shimmey,and shake when coming to a stop. i took in to the dealership they said they would replace the rotors and brake pads for free due to a program they had. the brakes were ok when i picked the car up but they never really seemed all very sharp to me. whenever i braked i had to start early to make sure my malibu came to a complete stop. that was march then less then two months later in may 2000 when my car had 38,000 miles the rotors gave out again. i took it to lynn layton chervolet they said my rotors had warped again. grudgedly they replaced my rotors and brake pads again. but they said the next time they would charge me. "as through i wanted them to put defective rotors on my car." now about a year late with an additional 14,000 miles my rotors have given out again. i was told by a mechanic that my rotors are supposed to last about 60,000 mile. when i get them fixed again it will have replaced my rotors and brake pads three times over a period of 19 months and 27,000 miles since i brought my care with 24,000 miles on it this is crazy. that averages replacing rotors and brakes pads once every 8000 miles!!!!!! are there any plans to do a recall or something to force gm to fix this major brake problem *****defective rotors. thank you... regina gamble. *ak

Third set of brakes & rotors in 30,000 miles, (car shakes or grinds each time) at other dealer i was told to expect it to happen again in another 10-15,000 miles only that it won't be under warranty next time. 1st time dealer replaced, 2nd time went to local garage because dealer wouldn't do it for free, 3rd time dealer replaced everything again and no charge. when i asked why it was no charge they indicated the following. (different dealership)this time tie rod was damaged and needed to be replaced as well. the dealer said the brakes themselves are not defective, it's just that the car is too heavy and works the brakes harder. the mechanic tried to convince me that it was the way i drive, but another person who works at the dealership stated to hime that she has a 98 malibu and stated she is on her 4th set already. she also mentioned something about a bulletin. i call the chevy 800 number and made a report, but they said nothing will happen. they just put the info in the computer. no person will call, no person available to speak to. no remedy to the sitaution. i would like to be reimbursed for the second repair and want to know if a remedy will soon be available as i did not want a car that has a severe brake problem and don't believe it is fair to say that they will cover it, but only up to the warranty period. if that is the case i would like to return the car and get my money back. i'll be hard pressed to buy an
