1996 JEEP Grand Cherokee

Responding to Chrysler for recall to prevent a gas tank fire from impact, my Jeep was returned to me w/o existing the (factory) hitch which had protected the tank; it was removed and a bolt broken off in frame. Dealer [Napleton Chrysler] aborted recall and refused to replace hitch, or to give or sell me the specified recall replacement hitch, telling me to either get rid of the jeep or have some (unspecified) welding repair, leaving no gas tank protection whatsoever from either side or rear impact. So I drilled out the broken 11mm bolt and rethreaded to 1/2-13 nc, and chased the 11mm threads with a tap, steel-wooled off surface rust and loose paint, rustoleumed the frame, & went back but they claimed it still wasn’t good enough. The actual threaded attachment bar in boxed on 6 sides by the frame so they could not have even seen it anyway! I hammered on the box before painting it; it was sound!

Trailer hitch recall. I was told that as part of the recall my hitch could be removed and not replaced if they decided additional body work would be needed. I would be referred to a body shop and have to pay the “high cost to re-install the hitch.” Without a hitch my Jeep is useless to me. They should pay the cost.

I am a single mom who depends on my Jeep Grand Cherokee I am now worried after seeing the report on Good Morning America. I am praying they recall these cars and not just sweep it under the rug as soooo many of these big Company’s get away with. This “complaint” is about the appearance of “shadiness” concerning some recent dealings with Chrysler. About two weeks ago we received a phone call at home from the local Chrysler dealer. “We need to do a recall on your 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The transmission control module needs reprogrammed.” We took it in and they “serviced it.” The work was done without charge, but the “bill” in two locations states “recall” and also “checked catalytic converter.” (Which had internally failed some time ago and we had it replaced at an independent garage.)Neither thhe Chrysler website nor the Jeep website nor the NHSTA website has this type of recall listed for this vehicle or anything resembling it for earlier or later years. I have a gut feeling that Chrysler is not being forthright with the reasons for this obscure and unheard-of “recall” much like they haven’t been honest about their unlatching seat belts and their cheap ball joints coming apart. There is an oil guage problem, VERY COMMON on the jeeps. When you slow to a stop the oil pressure goes to zero, then goes back up when you drive. This will not go away, oil changes help the problem for about 1 day. ALSO, my jeep has what has been deemed the death wobble. Which is a voilent, very voilent wobble in the front end after hitting bumps(usually with the right front tire)at and speed, what is being done to fix these problems, you go to any forum and there are countless customers with the same problems as mine. Something needs to be done, isn\’t anyone worried about this death wobble potentially killing consumers.

The summary of my complaint to DiamlerChrysler is as follows: I have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4×4 which has had 5 fuel pump modules and one gas tank replaced since 08.10.2000. The vehicle is in need of another fuel pump module. The dealers have difficulty in replicating the condition. The fuel gage is providing false readings; typically giving an empty tank reading when full, 3/4 full or 3/4 empty, along with other various readings. I have heard the same complaint from numerous other Grand Cherokee owners. I would think the maker/dealer would have spotted a trend by now or is overlooking it because of the cost involved with finding a new vendor. All receipt copies of work performed concerning this matter are intact.

The paint on my vehicle has begun to peel off the hood and the roof really badly. It is now also beginning to peel off on the sides. It just comes off in big flakes. This doesn’t seem normal to me.

THE AIR CONDITIONING STOPPED WORKING, ALL FOUR PANELS FOR THE DOORS WERE REPLACED BEFORE AND THERE ARE STARTING TO POP OUT AGAIN. THE ELECTRICAL WERE WORKED ON REPEATEDLY AND NO PROBLEM WERE FOUND. AT ONE POINT, I WAS TOLD MY AMPLIFIER WAS THE PROBLEM. EVER SO OFTEN, THE CAR WILL COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN AND WILL NOT MOVE. I HAD TO GET IT TOWED MANY TIMES. THERE WAS A DEFECT CONCERNING THE PARKING. THE DEALER ADJUSTED IT AND NOW IT\\\’S HARD TO GO IN PARK, IT\\\’S AS IF IT\\\’S JAMMING AGAINST SOMETHING. AGAIN, I WAS TOLD THAT IS THE WAY IT\\\’S SUPPOSE TO BE. COPIES OF ALL RECEIPTS CAN BE FURNISHED UPON REQUEST.

The air conditioning evaporator case gets clogged and backs up and floods the passenger compartments in the front and back on the passenger side of the vehicle. I have made numerous trips back to the dealer only to be told .. “yeah, it’s probably the worst designed evaporation system ever put in a vehicle, but Chrysler does not care to do anything about it”. I have made repair costs totalling more than $900 to try and fix it and look at another $600 tomorrow as it overflowed more than 1 1/2 inches of water from the front seat to the jack storage area under the back seat.

SECOND GEAR IS SLIPPING.SOME OF THE SEALS ARE LEAKING.ONE OF THE GEARS ARE STRIPPED.

My vehicle currently failed a safety inspection due to a crack in the exhaust manifold. After some research i found out that this is due to a faulty design. Unfortunately i can not drive the vehicle even though the crack does not render the vehicle undriveable but illegal because it failed the safety inspection. Is the manufacturer owning up to this by replacing/repairing the defective manifold or our the consumers fitting the bill? I have also had the oil pressure sender replaced as the readings were flunctuating.I have had the fuel pump replaced as it just stopped working and left my wife stranded while she was out shopping. I have had a rear caliper/rotor replaced as it froze on the rotor and even though it gave no noticable drag or other indication during driving it actually ate into the rotor and nearly severed it. FORTUNATELY for me i had purchased an extended warranty that covered everything except(less my deductable) the faulty exhaust manifold. Another item i would like to point out is the catalytic converter had to be replaced as the insides just broke apart and was causung an awful rattle, but in doing so the oxygen sensor now is bad. this is thse second one i have put in the vehicle. Is there any fedback from Jeep! They have a decent vehicle and it would be even better if they stood behind the problems caused by poor design or poor quality on some parts. I realize they can play the waiting game but the consumer doesn’t have that luxury. We need our transportation to go to work..etc.

My jeep has been really loud for sometime and is getting louder. it is when you start it up (really bad) and the whole time it’s running. i ask my mechanic and he said to try a heat riser. when we went to the jeep dealer to order it, the parts guy said we could try the heat riser, but more than likely it was a cracked/busted manifold. when we looke, the manifold is cracked in two or three places. i have contacted several mechanics in my area…they all say the same thing….manifolds on these jeeps are bad about cracking. the manifold lists for $431 and they say about $200 to put one in. plus, i have been told that it’s no good to fix the one from the manufacturer by welding it, because it will crack again. the suggestion i am getting is to buy a new aftermarket manifold…all the mechanics say they work better because they have 2 pieces on them that give for extra support. i think this is really sad. one single mechanic in the small town i live in has replaced at least 5 in the past year. i think this is overwhelming! there seems to be a defect in this part to me.

Engine randomly caught fire in the driveway while it was off. There was no work done to it recently, no newly added oil, and only had been driven approximately 5 miles before the fire. It is a total loss.

Airbag light turned on while driving, sent to dealer and the \"airbag module\" showed excessive voltage. Replacement was only option to repair. This appears to be a \"defective\" module as this vehicle has never been involved in any actions that would harm the airbag module.

Air conditioner constantly needs to be refilled with fluid. Does not hold.Power windows have gone off track on two separate occasions. Last time, still unrepaired, too expensive to repair.Transmission is now on it\’s 2nd rebuild in less then 4 years of ownership. 2nd rebuild required after just one year and a half of previous rebuild. Attorney General\’s office says many complaints about Jeep Transmissions even after repair as the parts used are no better than the parts it started with. Chrysler refuses to acknowledge problem.Brakes constantly need to be replaced.Interior dash board lights have short in switch causing them to dim at night so far that cannot read dash board instruments. I know of one other Jeep same year with same problem.Chrysler Daimler refuses to send any records of service and warrantee repairs or times vehicle in for anything prior to my purchasee as a used vehicle. Citing privacy laws, despite my instance that I do not need previous owners information, just cars records.

5/22 – I purchased a used 1996 Grand Cheerkee from C&M Auto Sales in the Bronx. I paid cash for the jeep. 5/23 – I picked the vehicle up. 5/24 – experience problems. The whole car would jump & shake ouot of control while I was driving bet. 30-40miles. I would have to stop the car for the jumping to stop. This was local driving. I spoke with the dealer, he informed me to get a tune-up. I had the tune-up done the same day and late that afternoon it happened again on the Belt Pkwy riding bet. 45 – 50miles. I had to pull over to the shoulder to avoid getting hit. I had a mechanic test drive the car and he experienced the jumping around 40 – 45miles. He changed the 2 shocks in the front, track bar, steering damper that was no good. 5/25 – it happened again while I was going through the Holland Tunnel. The car went out of control into the other lane. I called the dealer again and he mentioned to bring it in. The emergency brake wasn’t working & they had a lock on the left front wheeel. 5/28 – On my way up to the dealer, riding on the FDR. The car jumped out of control again and I was almost hit from the rear because I had to stop the car to stop the jumping. I mentioed this to the dealter and I received no response. I received no work order and they weld some metal piece by the axle on the left side. They did not test drive the car before or afterwards to feel the problem. 5/30 – it happened again in the evening, driving on Eastern pkwy in Bklyn. Again, I was almost hit from the rear because I had to stop the car for the jumping to stop. I had the same mechanic replace the back shocks. 5/31 – I wento to Pep Boys to get a wheel alignment & wheel balance done. It happened again. One of Pep Boys mechanic test drove the car and felt the jumping bet. 45 – 50miles. Pep Boys noticed that the frame on the left side was damage and mentioned that the vehicle cannot be aligned. They mentioned that the vehicle was not safe to drive. I called the dealer and mentioned what Pep Boys found & what I saw and told him that I wanted my money back becasue this was something that they saw and didn’t fix it nor did they pointed it out to me. I also mentioned how upset I was and that I was sold a lemon and I don’t trust any other cars on their lot. I wanted my money back. The dealer did not believe what Pep Boys diagnose and told me that the car was safe to drive even though I mentioned that when the jeep jumps it’s out of control and I have to stop for the jeep to stop jumping. I mentioned that I was almost hit in the rear twice while driving. He didn’t seem to believe or give me the confidence that he will give me my money back. I mentioned that the car is not safe and I didn’t have the car for a week and I’m having so much problems. I also mentioned that I do not feel safe in the car. I’m going to take the car back to the dealer on 6/2/03. This is the second day I’m missing from work. please help!

Fungus growing in gas tank that clogged fuel pump. Plastic tank apparantly did not have anti fungus toxin in the formula. Jeep refused to cover cost. Safety issue since car failed on highway. Car was out of warranty, but since safety issued they should have covered. What this note is about is a heat shield in front of the gas tank that falls off the car. It was mounted with two steel screws and washers and since the shield was made out of aluminum the metals reacted and the screws holes in the shield become oversized and then the shield falls off. The shield is about a square foot in size on is bolted onto the floor pan just in front of the tank. Jeep no longer has them so you cannot replace. Not sure if this comes into play with the recent article about gas tank failures in a rear end collision. No matter what, the shield is there for a purpose and Jeep should be held accountable for having in stock replacement ones for safety reasons. must be a lot of cars out there that are missing them. Not sure if this comes into play with the recent concern about gas tank failures in a CNN report today.

Jeep grand cherokee customer had recall work done and paid out of pocket customer states that she followed the instruction for reimbursement but has not received money**cc the consumer was told if she didn't have proof that payment was made for the repair, she would not be reimbursed. *jb

1996 jeep grand cherokee tires were the wrong size.***no answer required***. *mr the front cv axles, wheel bearings had to be replaced, the front drive shaft had to be rebuilt, transmission fluid replaced and new filter and new pvc gasket had to be replaced due to the wrong size tires being installed (too small). *tt

When base of child safety seat was initially installed, infants head fell forward when the brakes were applied. consumer was forced to manually hold infant's head until she was able to completely remove the base. last incident involved the stroller/carrier part of the system. had carrier locked in place on the stroller. the securing bar and carrier fell out head first, causing child to land upside down.

The inspection recall on my 1996 jeep grand cherokee did nothing to fix the problem with pcm and catalytic converter specified in the defective issue within the recalls issued. this harms the driver, pedestrians, other passengers and motorists. the tech where i went to have recall work performed ordered parts (see attachment), but nothing was installed on my vehicle. only "inspected." the tech was told of detailed poor performance and symptoms of a bad pcm. such as shifting, stalling, fuel economy & hard to start. the jeep is not operating optimally & this could mean there are. other problems between different systems. all of these are indications of a faulty pcm. as well as the abs light being on the dashboard. the pcm is a "critical" system & needs to be replaced. i'm requesting that you fix this problem for free, as it is defective and could mingle with other systems and cause a complete vehicle break down. or refund the cost to me in full, including labor charges, if i replace/repair myself. if this defective part is not fixed, it could result in property damage, in which cdj would be liable for. please advise as to how you can help enforce the manufacture to fully repair these defective parts & remedy this problem on fixing the faulty pcm & catalytic converter within a recall and possibly the abs system and transmission. the vehicle stalls on highway, in park, on the street, when stopped and then it stalls out and is hard to start. it also has not been able to go in reverse ( back up). which mean it's not getting proper lubrication. also, the alarm goes off when using key to gain access. unhooking battery to reset does not help.

In december 1996 i was ran over by my jeep grand cherokee in my driveway after it jumped back into gear from park. i reported this issue immediately to the anchorage alaska dealer who had to fix the drivers door that had been destroyed in the event and he stated there was not a problem with the gearshift. i had also reported the issue here on the nhtsa web site in january of 1997. i was taken to the air force hospital emergency room at elemendorf afb alaska and i believe submitted that information at that time. so this recent problem with an actor being killed by his jeep is not a new issue. there was something wrong with the drive train as far back as 1996. when i was ran over my jeep was in park running in my garage. it drug me backward into the driveway where i slipped on the ice fell under the car and my left lower leg was ran over by the front tire. i still have complications from that incident.

I had my power steering bracket break into 3 pieces, causing me to go through 2 pulleys and 4 serpentine belts before figuring out the problem. i have also experienced the "death wobble" a few times at speeds between 40-50 mph. it is very disturbing and scary and forced me off the road. i have to slow down immediately to get it to stop.

Family ownership since new. recently started experiencing the "death wobble." jeep traveling on a high speed (above 60) road starts to shake uncontrollably and is difficult/impossible to steer or maneuver. jeep feels like it is going to fall apart. happens without warning. have to stop or significantly slow down before shaking stops. this is the third time in the past six months.

Hankook optimo h724 p225/75 /r15 102 slww tires - set of 4 tires purchased new on 5/25/2018. kept up with regular tire rotations and air pressure checks. first replacement (side wall defect) 10/21/2019. flat repair 2/24/2020 second tire replacement (side wall defect) 8/10/2020. this is highly suspect and determinable that these tires are dangerous and defective. hanook has denied remedy even with citing the $1.2 million jury verdict + discovery sanctions i cited to during my conversation with the claims division on 8/10, 9/1 abd 9/2/2020. additionally, 70,000 mile tread warranty. seller has determined the wear rate is 46,868 miles. seller's comment: "these tires do not last long" hankook tires usa claims department admits to unusual wear but insists its tires are "within nhtsa standards". see hankook v. philpot, 2018 ark. app. 546, at 4-5, 564 s.w.3d 555, 557-58, .hankook's appeal from the circuit court's order imposing attorney's fees as a discovery sanction in hankook tire co., ltd. v. philpot, 2016 ark. app. 386, 499 s.w.3d 250., an arkansas jury ordered south korea-based hankook tire co. ltd to pay $1.2 million to a severely injured dump truck driver over an accident caused by a tire tread defect. hankook tire co. et al. v. elmer philpot, case no. 2020 ark. app. 316, in the arkansas court of appeals. these tires are dangerous and defective to blow outs and softness to attract rather than deflect any normal road debris+ the tire tread is already half it's determined warrantied life span which is a hazard in its own separate defect which hankook does acknowledge the later but not the former..

Recall on the hitch.

Car usually runs fine cold but when it gets to operating temperature it stalls unexpectedly and in dangerous moments while driving on any road or freeway at any speed. i lose all powered functions like steering and brakes. it won't start again for hours until it has cooled all the way down.

Experienced death wobble on freeway at 45-55 and to regain control have t0 apply brakes and almost come to a dead stop. six months after, the steering housing cracked found two out of the three bolts had snaped the bolt closest to the firewall had the broken casting still tourqe to the frame. i lost the steering on a turn in a 15 mph zone

Driving at nearly 45-50 mph, the entire front end began to shake violently until i slowed to a near stop. the steering wheel bounced back and forth more and more until i was going about 15-20 mph. i was not in the process of turning nor had i just completed a turn. there were no bumps to mention either.

Engine over heat get worse when a/c is on and it also have a electical problem that kills the battery aften and its not the altenator really tired of this

I experienced a "death wobble" in my 1996 jeep grand cherokee. it was so bad that it broke the gears in the steering box and made me lose the steering control while driving. had to have the steering box replaced 3 times because of the wobble occurring multiple times. have replaced all recommended parts and everything looks and feels tight in regards to the steering and suspension. the problem is continuing to happen.

While driving vehicle at approximately 40 to 45 mph, hit a small pot hole in road with right tire. front end of vehicle began to shake violently with front end wobbling and steering wheel shaking badly. it seemed like the vehicle was about to fall apart. by slowing down significantly, it stopped the situation from occurring. it was quite jarring and very disturbing. did some investigation and found this is known as the ?jeep death wobble?. quite concerned about this occurrence.

Jeep refused to complete the repairs included in the recall: report receipt date: jun 19, 2013 nhtsa campaign number: 13v252000 component(s): fuel system, gasoline , structure potential number of units affected: 1,560,000 jeep advised us they are unable to complete repairs necessary because the rear of the car has "too much rust". although, we rely on the car every single day to get us to/from work and school.

While exiting one freeway to another (on the ramp) at 60+ miles per hour, the entire front end starting shaking violently. the steering wheel was shaking back and forth. i have since found out this is known as 'the death wobble'. we have spent well over $5000 trying to correct this problem. however, the front end continues to require work in order to keep it from reoccurring.

My issues relates to existing recall # n45/ nhtsa 13v-252. the recall indicates that vehicles without a hitch will have a hitch installed by the dealer or if a hitch was installed after the vehicle was sold then chrysler will provide reimbursement for the cost. my question is...what about the original owners that purchased the vehicle with the hitch as original equipment? why are they (we) excluded from any reimbursement? why were we not considered in the recall evaluation? i have contacted chrysler and have been given the typical corporate runaround blaming their inability to offer reimbursement on the nhtsa recall notice. looks like the balls in your court. *tr

For three years, jeep gc has gone through 6 different batteries. drain occurs randomly but may appear to be related to factory remote keyless entry. jeep has also experienced other electronic power surges in past (interior lights and gauges going haywire, driver/navigation console literally going up in smoke.) several automobile technicians have serviced the vehicle and have not been able to locate the origin of this problem. the problem, itself, could very well lead to an accident, fire, and even fatality.

The jeep will die at any given time, place, temperature. nothing seems to make a difference. the only thing i can get to make a difference on wether it runs or dies in putting pressure by hand on the number three computer plug. no check engine light, no codes no nothing. just a faulty computer design thats putting myself and my family in dangerous situations on a regular basis.

I received a safety recall notice # n45/nhtsa 13v-252. this notice explains that the fuel tank on my vehicle has a chance of experiencing a fuel leak during certain types of rear end collisions. chrysler is supposed to inspect my vehicle and install an original equipment manufacturer (oem) trailer hitch where appropriate, free of charge ( parts and labor ). my car does not have a trailer hitch so this needs to be done. i have called the local chrysler dealer in my area - rockland chrysler jeep on route 304 in nanuet, new york 10954 - several times. first call when i received the recall notice - several months ago, i was told that there is nothing for me to do at this time, someone would contact me. no one ever did. i called the chrysler group recall assistance center at 1 800 853 1403; i gave them my vehicle identification number and asked for an update on the recall as i was concerned about the safety hazard to me and my family. i was told that my information was noted and i should be hearing from the local chrysler dealer. i am still waiting. several weeks passed, no one from the local dealer or chrysler corp. contacted me. i called rockland chrysler and made an appointment for my car to be inspected by their technicians. i further requested that the safety concern noted in this recall be documented by rockland chrysler. i was told i would have to leave the car with them for several hours because the inspection was somewhat involved. two days before my appointment, rockland chrysler called and told me they had to cancel my appointment because the parts were on back order. i asked for an e t a on the parts, was told they did not know - "back ordered". my complaint is that there is an unresolved serious safety defect that needs to be addressed now. chrysler corp. seems to be trying to avoid any involvement. *tr

I am contacting your agency because of a safety concern i have regarding the repairs made to my vehicle in response to the recall #n45. as background, i took my vehicle to a dealer, mall of georgia jeep, for the repair (i.e., to replace towing hitch) on 8.12.2014 and was told the next day that i could not use the hitch that had been replaced. the mechanic had struggled (he admitted to me) to do the job and it took him two or three times the estimated time to complete the work. in fact, it took so long that i had to go home in a rental car and had to return the following day to pick up my jeep. when i returned on 8.13.2014, i was told that i should no longer use the hitch for towing. i asked why and was told that this was the manufacturer's guidance; however, i was not given anything, to this effect, in writing. i have two concerns: 1) was the safety recall repair done correctly given a) the difficulty that the mechanic had in doing the job and b) the dealer not standing behind the fiat chrysler oem replacement hitch that it had installed; and, 2) apparently the dealer replaced a functioning hitch with one that was not without telling me so in advance. i contacted fiat chrysler (case # 25468706) on 8.13.2014 and asked for authorization to take my jeep to another authorized dealer to check the repair workmanship, i was told that i would have to pay for this inspection to be done. i believe that my concerns are reasonable and do not think it is fair that i must bear the cost of a safety inspection. i am asking your agency to help me get this inspection done by an independent party, to be paid for by fiat chrysler, given the nature and circumstances of the issues i have raised. thank you for your time and attention...updated 10/06/14 *bf updated 3/12/2015 *js

This was many years ago, but with the investigation into engine's unexpectedly shutting down while driving i thought i should report. the jeep grand cherokee was a '96 or '97, not sure anymore. i was driving on a major road, not a highway but where you could travel in the 40's and the engine totally shut down. i brought the car to a dealer and he couldn't find anything wrong. it happened again, this time at a slower speed. brought it back the dealer and again they couldn't find anything wrong. i refused to take the car back until they found and repaired. he asked if he could drive it home, hoping to replicate issue, he didn't even make it out of the parking lot. this was a dealer in tampa, fl, so hopefully there is a record of what they found. it did not happen again, but we sold the car shortly after. *tr

The fuel tank has two structural straps to ensure the tank is safely attached to the frame. assuming both straps are fabricated to the same specifications both should be in, more or less, the same condition as they are located next to each and experience the same level of wear and tear. my vehicle has one strap that is in fine condition. the second strap has rusted through and no longer provides the designed support for the fuel tank. chrysler's position is this is due to wear and tear and refused to acknowledge the disparity between the condition of each strap. chrysler has had issues with these straps. i believe it can be reasonably assumed that chrysler is culpable and should replace the deteriorated strap at their cost given the risk associated with the condition. i respectfully request that the safety board present my case to chrysler to make me whole. *tr

At any speed or teraine, my vehicle will violently shake out of control!!!!!! it happens randomly, and for the past mont i have been checking on what is causing this as well as the best place to have the repairs done. i also have some other issues with this vehicle as well. the last "shaking" incindent happened while driving over an over pass about 45mph, started praying because i thought that i was about to die! so, wanting the repairs done properly i call a 1-800 jeep chrysler number to ask for a certified mechanic. while on the phone i had a feeling to ask about recalls. i was informed of only two (minor) issues. called the dealership, set an appointment to have the recall repairs done and an estimate of the other issues. i did not end up with both recalls done (they did not feel the converter needed replaced)!!! i declined the price of thier estimate not the repairs! the estimate given roughly totals $3,929.00! which after checking this website i find that a good part if not all of the repairs may fall under recall!!!! the mechanic i spoke with several times called this "shaking issue" , "the death shake" (and i quote the mechanic,[xxx]) . chrysler dealership in tahlequah, ok. yates auto sales. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Engine shudders and stalls while i'm driving down the road. this has happened several times. have to try to pull over out of traffic. it usually starts back after a few minutes of turning engine over. it may run a few miles and then same thing happens again. i have had several close calls with getting hit from behind. also, steering shuts down. hard to maneuver out of traffic. have had it checked with diagnostics. nothing shows up. has fuel filter changed anyway, did not help. had battery, alternator checked, show good. i was astonished to find so much info online that proves this is a very widespread problem that is obviously a manufacturing defect. i am surprised many people have not been harmed by this. i am also very surprised there has been no recall mandated to correct this and insure the safety of the owners of these vehicles, along with the folks on the road that would be involved with a rear end accident. please update me via email and let me know if there is any pending action or plans to hold the manufacturer responsible for their defect. i basically have a vehicle that is useless and worth nothing because it is not dependable. *tr

Jeep advertises that there grand cherokees can withstand water up to 20 inches deep. i beg to differ and i have been lied to. was driving through my neighborhood on my way to a buddy's house a few blocks away, i hit a small puddle on my way and my engine just seized up and everything went ballistic. measured the puddle and it was a whopping inch and a half deep. had my buddy tow me back home to check it out and low and behold, there it was, rod #1 sticking right through my oil pan about an inch. bent to high [xxx] and sheared right off (note: also noticed the electrical components said "japan" and when i pulled the oil pan and pulled the rod, in big bold letters "china" stamped on the rod") now i have a 6000lb paper weight sitting in my driveway that i can do nothing with. now if jeep advertises that their vehicles are safe in water up to 20 inches, why did an inch and a half deep puddle hydrolock my engine resulting in rod #1 being shot through the oil pan and all electronics fried? hmmmm interesting. also notice how the foreign mass market parts were the only ones to fail. seems a little fishy. it grinds my gears because i have been a die hard mopar enthusiast since i was born, my father worked for chrysler from the day he graduated to the day he died and slaved for the company and this is the products they are selling to the american public. i smell [xxx]and it pains me to say that i will never ever purchase a chrysler product for the rest of my days........screw chrysler and their fiat owned corporation. i do not support foreign products in any way shape or form. All electronic door locks fail to work. cannot lock or open them with the key either. this means i cannot lock my vehicle at any time since it will mean locking me out and requiring calling assistance to open my vehicle door. *tr

Started out to go to work @ 6 am traveled with no issues to the kids sitter's house and then continued on to work on double lane highway speed limit 60 mph. the jeep started sputter, jerk and eventually died, didn't realize it had died so pulled off to side of road, turn the jeep back on it kept sputtering, jerking and died again. finally, it backfired 3 to 4 times and stayed started. check engine light came on went and had the code read it stated it was the ignition coil and catalyst system. so we changed the ignition coil and catalytic converter, along with the muffler do to the fact the backfiring blew a hole plum through the muffler. still same problems. have had several near miss of crashes, and bodily injury. now it doesn't want to start and you sit on the side of the road like i did for 2 hours before it wanted to start up. *tr

When the problem started, approximately 7 months ago, the vehicle would stall when i was slowing for a turn or a stop. it happens intermittently. fuel filter, fuel pump, tps, ecm, etc. have all been changed, and the problem keeps coming back. lately the vehicle stalls at driving speeds, as well as when slowing. i have been nearly rear ended so many times i can't even count. the stalling is always intermittent, but seems that it happens most frequently when i am on short trips of around 5 miles. i will get to the store and it will stall while i am entering the parking lot, i start it back up and get into a parking space, shop and return to my car, which stalls again as i am backing out, shifting from reverse to drive. then as i leave the parking lot it may stall again, and then again on my way home while driving between 25-40 mph. it is getting increasingly harder to restart. i have noticed many jeep grand cherokee forums online where this same complaint comes up over and over. this seems to be a very wide spread problem and nobody seems to have a remedy that works. many people throw money into parts just guessing at what the problem may be. it seems quite unsafe, not only for the drivers of the jeep gcs, but for the people bound to rear end us. *js

This is a commonly known defect with these jeeps which has never been adequately addressed by the nhtsa. someone is going to get killed if the manufacturer is not held responsible. infamous stalling problem. whether going 10 mph or 70 mph, vehicle will stall with no warning. generally will re-start after turning off ignition, but not always immediately. on my jeep, i have replaced the computer module, crankshaft position sensor, fuel pump, fuel filters, maf sensor, distributor cap, rotor, plugs and plug wires. i have had the computer module wiring harness reworked. still stalls, and i have been forced to park the jeep for safety reasons. *tr

1996 jeep grand cherokee ltd., 4.0/6cyl./auto trans. random intermittent stalling and/or bucking while driving, stalling at stop signs, restarts immediately sometimes (or not). stalling and/or bucking may occur at 70 mph or 35 mph. jeep will be running perfectly for miles and then just stall (at 70 mph on interstate while merging with another interstate is very stressful and dangerous.. ie. i75 at knoxville, tenn. or i71 at i 270 in columbus, ohio. many times it will stall while crossing a state highway from a stop sign on a county road. also occurs on county roads while cruising along at 45 to 55 mph. it is truly a random and intermittent problem ...and very dangerous. i have been honked at, cursed at, nearly broadsided,/rearended too many times to even begin to count. problem has been ongoing for 4 years. replacing the pcm works for maybe 2 months then problem returns sometimes worse than before (have replaced at least 4-5 times...or more!! jeep dealer can confirm) have replaced crank sensors, 02 sensors, speed sensors, wiring harness plugs, muffler, catalytic converter, distributer, plug wires and misc. wire jumps and repairs, rebuilt transmission, battery. problem is sometimes not even made any better and "always" returns in a few days or months if better at all. i believe it to be a poor pcm design, but admittedly am not a mechanic but an engineer and surveyor. many other 1996 jeep grand cherokee owners share my stress and aggravation. some think it the 2 torque screws wearing though and shorting out on the pcm housing at the plugs (too long). i have spent, "literally" thousands of dollars over the past 4-5 years. runs great 75-85 percent of the time...but when it decides to stall it just does it...stopped, accelerating from stop, slowing down from 55 to 35 mph, cruising along at 50 to 75 mph. i do not understand why you do not make jeep fix this problem (whatever it is) before someone gets killed...like me. is it about the money? how many millions is one life? *tr

On nov.2007 i purchased 4 bridgestone dueler h/t 684ii , p245/70/r16 tires for my jeep cherokee limited. the car had 67,000 miles on it. in sept 2010 i took the car into sts for the 4th time for a balance and wheel alignment, as the car always pulled to the left since i put the tires on. the car now has 97,000 miles on it and the treads are worn on the side of the tires not the middle or inside side. sts is now saying i need new tires. why did they only wear on the outer side of the tire and not in the middle or other side. for the money i paid, these tires are a piece of junk. i have had bf goodrich and had tires much longer than these. *tr

Every time i fill up my 96 jeep grand cherokee laredo at a gas station i need to pump it in slowly and manually. the nozzle, if set on high or low immediately clicks off. if it does not shut off, it spews fuel out of the filler. this has been an ongoing problem for the past 2 years. this happens regardless of how much fuel is in the tank before i start the filling process. pumping the fuel myself is getting old. i live in nj where the customer is technically not allowed to do this as our stations are full service and this must be done by an attendant. fortunately, i go to the same station and they are used to me doing it myself. otherwise the attendant has to babysit the nozzle and pump it in slower than the slow setting. i have tried other brand gas stations and still have the overflow problem. *tr

My vehicle stalls when it is hot outside. i have had the coil replaced then i had the catalytic converter replaced and o2 sensor and it still stalled on start up. i took it to the dealership and it stalled and they told me it was my fuel pump. i spent 965 on a fuel pump i didn't need because it is still stalling and they have no clue why. i seen this problem on mean forums. i think the dealer should be aware of this problem and should know how to fix them not make someone spend a thousand dollars on a might. *tr

Failure: vehicle randomly stalls out and cuts out. can occur at any time and has nearly caused a collision on multiple occasions at intersections and on freeways. vehicle can stall at idle, or any speed. cause of failure: the wiring harnesses at the pcm become loose causing the pcm to loose connection with the engine, thus creating the stall. i believe this is due to faulty locking tabs on the harness, which secure the harnesses to the pcm. correction: replacement parts are available from dealer only. i have confirmed this as the cause by gently touching the harness with the engine running, the slightest movement causes the engine to cut out and stall. i have included the most recent occurrence date, however the problem happens on a daily basis and i will not drive the vehicle until it is repaired due to the safety risk for me and my family. *tr

I had received a notice to change/flash computer prom by chrysler, so i took in to dealer, it took about 5 minutes. but after this the vehicle starter to miss once in while, but not stall at that time. then it started to get worse, it stalled at low speeds, on the city streets, high speeds on the freeway, right after starting or if it has run for awhile, then acts up "throw codes" but nothing to the reason why fuel bank or speed sensor, no spark. i looked under hood and shook wires and it will die or run better. now it is doing it too many times, some times in will restart right away, but some times it will take some time to restart. i burned up a starter, and two new fresh batteries with this. wife can not drive it any more i have replaced distributor, cam sensor, crank sensor, removal connection blocks and soldered up the wire connections, which only helped to get power back in the battery. i can still shake the wire loom, and it dies or runs better to this date. so as you see it has not one way or another to make it run bad, we can not depend on this only vehicle now. i am a post ase cert auto tech, w/ computers and i can not figure out. *tr

A new goodyear wrangler rt/s tire (not at/s as shown on your pulldown menu), disintegrated while traveling on i-81 in virginia at approximate 65 mph. the tire was one of two wrangler rt/s tires installed on the front of the vehicle earlier in the week at chandler's auto repair in herndon, va. the driver maintained control and pulled the vehicle (1996 jeep grand cherokee) safely to the side of the road. i checked the inflation before we departed on our trip and it was 34 lbs. the occupants in the vehicle reported seeing no objects on the road, potholes or other road hazards--just a sudden pop and then pieces of black material flying by the vehicle. i do not have the remnants of the tire, which was replaced at the wal-mart in staunton, va, but i do have photographs taken at the site. the failure occurred immediately north of exit 225 (southbound) on i-81. this is approximately 160 miles from our home. allowing for a few errands before departing on our trip, i doubt the tire had more than 200-225 miles on it before it failed. the weather was fair and dry and the air temperature 86 f. i-81 is smooth and in excellent condition at the location of the failure. while i did not report the failure to the police, a virginia state safety patrol vehicle stopped and may have a record. the tread was relatively intact but appears to have separated from the rest of the tire. *tr

Problem... driving down the road or stopped at light or in the middle of a turn or on expressway... it would shut off without warning, sometime it would restart immediately, sometimes not!!!... extremely dangerous situations developed, which i was lucky!!! 1996 jeep grand cherokee, 4.0 , 6 cyl.... spent 6 months doing repairs/ replacement parts and many ,many dollars spent tracking down part after part. using diagnostics machine to determine faulty part... problem was the power control module ( pcm or ecu same part) was defective and either was misreading codes or giving out bad codes to parts (like to the crank shaft position sensor or the coil, or the 01 or 02 ox sensors or it goes on and on and on). not sure how it works but you get my drift. since signing up with cnet.com, have found many people across america with the same issue on jeep with different years (1994/2000) and models. to search... look up jeep stalls or jeep fixed and you will see other topics and forums around that topic and you will also see where the manufacture doesn't know how to address the problem either. another possible recall issue is the screws that hold the pcm might be too long and are grounding out the unit after paint wears off on firewall... important to read all articles and different forums!!! ... is a must lastly... instead of replacing pcm's, is it possible to have the pcm re flashed under recall??? i'm stretching, but maybe electrical power storms and rain is causing parts to defect??? lastly... jeep parts consists of module power units that work or don't work but the pcm reads the codes and adjusts the workable of the motor... another issue is that there are several issues that will shut down the motor besides the fore mentioned parts... ie... asd relay, the security system, door locks, steering column, the electronic key, the back windshield wiper... *tr

Vehicle was loosing power, cutting out and dying. while accelerating or driving at a constant speed it would cut out. when you would slow the vehicle to stop or turn it would die loosing all power steering, brakes, etc. check engine light would turn on but sometimes the reading would be lost by the time it went to mechanic. crank shaft sensor was replaced with a napa brand. still the problem kept happening. several other parts were replaced over 3 years trying to figure it out. finally in march 07 the mechanic replaced the crank shaft sensor again but with a factory part. haven't had any problems since. i am upset because i had to pay for a part to be preplaced twice plus others, exceeding $1000 because the after market part wasn't compatible with my vehicle. either napa needs to stop making this part or jeep needs to let consumers know that this particular part won't work. have read reports of other vehicles having same problem. maybe this could help them. *tr

Paint is fading and has started peeling, also chips very easily. exhaust manifold is also cracked. the paint problem has been steadily getting worse since i first noticed it approx. (2) years ago. the vehicle was still loud after the muffler was changed, dealer diagnosed a cracked exhaust muffler. i contacted chrysler who would not stand behind the factory problems. they stated the vehicle was to old and had to many miles on it. *tr

I understand that it is a common problem for the ( 1996 and newer jeep grand cherokee )exhaust manifold. they develop an exhaust leak, where the weld of the 2 exhaust pipes off of the engine meet the flange ( leak at weld of flange ) for the transfer to a single exhaust pipe. i've just had a recall completed by jeep because of the rattle in the catalytic converter, which i was told posed an emissions question, but the exhaust manifold leak posses a much larger problem not only with exhaust leak of hot gases of co, and the effectiveness of the catalytic converter. *jb

While backing slowly and turning, we experienced a catastrophic failure of the mounting bracket for the power steering pump on our 1996 jeep grand cherokee limited 5.2 liter v-8. the failure caused the serpentine belt to fly loose, the pump to become inoperative and the pump to fall into the radiator fan which caused the vehicle to overheat and spray anti-freeze all over the engine compartment. subsequent examination of the bracket showed an old fracture at the bolt hole nearest the first numeral molded into the part. at a salvage yard a nearly identical bracket from a 1994 model of the same vehicle showed that failure was beginning on that part in precisely the same location. *tr

Engine cuts out or has difficulty starting. periodically(could be more than once a day) the motor turns over but will not start as it normally should. often have to wait approach. 10 minutes and will start. often after only a few minutes. also, while driving along at high speed the engine will cut out and may restart immediately(seconds) and occasionally must pull off of highway and wait a few minutes before it will restart. recall on pcm ; technician advised me that it might be pcm , but problem has worsened since recall on pcm was performed. at least 20 failures. perhaps more. *jb

Consumer had the catalytic converter repaired under recall. within days the check engine light illuminated. mechanic determined that the catalytic converter was defective.*ts the consumer was told by the dealer's technician that the catalytic converter had efficiency failure. the consumer was told that the part would not be covered under the recall again because the part was not and original oem part. *nm

Car purchased summer of 2002. within two years the exhaust manifold part failed causing rumbling noise when car engine is running and slight smell of exhaust. had a michigan certified mechanic replace the part with a new genuine jeep exhaust manifold part. new part today is failing again. told by mechanic part would have to be replaced and that this part is one he has seen fail constantly on jeeps. mechanic explained part breaks down from heat/cold expansions and when the exhaust is removed the part is in pieces. i am sending this complaint as there are no recalls from chrysler on a part that is important relating to engine exhaust that cannot be channel through the exhaust pipes safely since the manifold is being made to break down within a two year period. check other vehicles (i have owned many other named autos) and you will find this part is not being replaced every year. how can an emissions test be accurate if the exhaust is not being channeled through it's system? the exhaust smell is right by the front car doors, where the manifold part is failing. i hope your department will look into this exhaust problem is dangerous to the environment and humans. *jb

Just over a year ago, my 1996 jeep grand cherokee laredo encountered a defective fuel pump. as i was in the process of procuring a replacement pump, a friend told me to check for recalls/tsb's on it as he had experienced many fuel pump problems with these. there were, i believe two tsb's involving my vehicle so i called chrysler. they told me to take the vehicle to the dealership to determine if the problem was the pump. i told her i had already done that. she told me that they had to determine it and if it was the pump, chrysler would cover the repair. i had it towed to chrysler ($65) and they indeed found it was a defective fuel pump and replaced it and i was charged over $600 for the repair. after the fact, chrysler declined to pay for what they promised. i had found a replacement pump that i was prepared to install myself for $163 and had chrysler been honest and declined to cover the repair, i would have accomplished it myself for $163 and been able to go on vacation to the outer banks instead of paying almost $700 and having to cancel my vacation. i have contacted , emailed, etc many people at chrysler to no avail. i have since learned that when you deal with chrysler, you better get it in writing! please help if you can!. *nm

Dt: the consumer states that july 2, 2005 he was driving 20 mph and the gas tank fell off of the vehicle. the police and fire department came to the scene and the fire department filed a incident report #4403-05 with the sioux falls fd. the vehicle was towed to an automotive service where he did business. the rear passenger strap rusted through and because of the weight of the tank the other strap rusted as well. the straps have been replaced. he still has one of these straps. there is a jeep file number 13747938. jeep was not compensating due to age and miles on the vehicle. the gas tank was punctured after it fell off. the vehicle has been maintained and there have been no accidents. the consumer bought the vehicle from his son who originally leased it from baxter jeep in omaha, ne.*ak

Heater hose jammed accelerator linkage causing runaway vehicle at very high speed...shifted into neutral to avoid collision...brakes were insufficient to stop the vehicle as jamming caused engine rpm's to go very high [approx. 5000 rpm].

I was told that all exhaust manifolds on the straight 6 cylinder motor developed a crack in the same location due to stress and the replacment parts have been reenginereed to "flex". i fear mild to severe carbon monoxide contamination of the interior cabin could occur common complaints of headaces. this seems to be a very common problem that is very expensive $900 est. that many consumers take a chance and do not make repairs. *ak

Recall campaign 02v053000, consumer left the vehicle in the driveway, went into the house, and the vehicle rolled down the driveway, and struck a tree, damaging the right rear tail light/ lift rear door, and bumper. consumer did not remember receiving recall for inadvertent movement. *ak the vehicle does not hold it's position when placed in park. the manufacturer agreed to perform the recall but refused to provide any assistance for the body damage because they claimed the consumer neglected to have the recall work performed. *tc

While driving driver's side door popped open and would not close. the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, and was told that the vehicle was out of warranty and there was nothing they could do. the consumer then took the vehicle to an aftermarket body shop, and was told that it was the weld, which was very thin that caused the latches to pop off inside the door. *ak *sc

I have a 96 grand cherokee ltd 4x4 with 115k miles. since it turned 65k miles i have replaced the brake pads and drums 3 times. i have water leaks in the seat belt wells, the passenger side window, and the belts are wet when it rains. today, water is pooling in the floor of the driver's side. water pours from just above the accelerator. must be from a/c?the rear door hatch has jammed in lock position. the electronic mileage/ fuel readout (on ceiling module) fluctuates wildly and is inaccurate. the catalytic converter went out at 64,975 miles. now have a crack in the exhaust manifold, quoted $1200 by dealer to repair. i have gone through stock 3 radios, tuner problems. massive a/c problems in past. i paid a non dealer to repair it, the repairs held for 30 days and same problem started again. then had dealer repair and it was a recall item so was covered after i'd paid for 2 prev repair jobs at $1100 total. the power steering pump went out at 90k miles. replaced so many other parts, i'd have to refer to the service records for more details. this list is only from memory. total cost over 3 yrs....around $4000! oh, and the rear hatch/door paint is faded and dull, totally different from the rest of the car. all black metal painted parts paint is coming off. has been for couple of years. also the roof rattle really loud at over 50mph. the power outlet came apart still attached to my phone cord one day. finally, the front end has some problem with the axle? and will cost approx $700 to repair. i thought i had a lemon until i talked with 3 other jeep owners, they've had similar problems. do we have any recourse with chrysler over these vehicles...i am considering involving an attny.

This complaint was sent by a web user via e-mail. while driving the driver's door opened and would not close. luckily no accident occurred, because consume r was able to control the car. upon inspection noticed that the door latch inside the driver's door broke off from door frame by itself, was hanging, and not connected. when trying to shut the door it wouldn't shut. consumer took the car to a dealership, and they said there was nothing they could do. consumer took it to a body shop, and they said it would be $1636.75 to replace the door and latch. *ak *tc

Certain sport utility vehicles, if a driver has not placed the shifter lever fully into the "park" position and leaves the vehicle running, the vehicle may unexpectedly move rearward after seeming to be stable. this recall letter was received on 2003 and failed. the consumer crashed into the rear of another vehicle. please provide further information. *jb

The vehicle jumped out of gear, striking another vehicle and a mail box . after receiving a recall for the existing condition. the manufacturer inspected the vehicle and stated that the brake line was worn. *jb recall# 02v053000. *sc

Engine did not run due to fuel tank coating coming off. this coating is there to provide added assurance that there be no fuel leak (and a fire) if the plastic wall of the tank leaks (on its own or after a crash). thus there is a fire safety hazard.*ak the manufacturer and dealer will not replace the tank (even after 3 recurances of the engne running problem, due to the coating coming off the tank wall and clogging the fuel filter and - in 1 case - even the fuel pump). they, instead, flush the tank (removing even more coating) and re-instal it. i am now using a tank with probably very little fire-protection coating. i feel this is a huge safety problem.

The consumer's vehicle was involved in a collision, it struck a tree head on. upon impact, the air bags did not deploy. the manufacturer stated that the vehicle did not have enough impact to deploy the air bags. the front grill was pushed into the engine. *ak *sc

I have a 1996 jeep grand cherokee limited which i took into the shop for optional maintenance while i was away on vacation. merely one day after picking up the car, my power steering mounting bracket broke completely away from the engine assembly. i lost all steering capability. fortunately i was only 2 blocks from home in a 35mph zone, and had not gotten on the freeway at that point. i managed to drive it to a point in the road that curved in and got the vehicle haphazardly to the curb where i called aaa. the car was towed back to the dealership that had just done the maintenance. they informed me that they had never seen the steering bracket/pump come fully away from an engine before. not having any options, i had them repair and replace whatever parts were necessary. but i'm shocked that this happened, and i'm just thankful that no one was killed or injured including me. because this is (in the words of the service manager) an "extremely rare" occurance which they had "never seen before", i have to suspect one of two things, 1. either faulty equipment on the part of jeep, or 2. tampering by the mechanic to cause failure. if this occured regularly, there would be death tolls in the thousands every day from losing all steering on one's vehicle. the steering malfunction also caused other damage to my cooling system and my fan cover due to the serpentine belt coming loose. while the vehicle was running the belt spun around freely at about 1000 rpms according to the technician he suspected that this was what caused the other damage, so the car was also overheating. *ak

While driving in reverse consumer lost steering control. vehicle was towed to a repair shop and the mechanic determined that the problem was caused by the main bolts shearing off from the steering gear box. *ak

Upon starting the vehicle, i immediately heard a bang followed by loud clanging under the hood. i began backing out of my garage and noticed i had no power steering. at this point i estimated that the belt had broken and shut down the engine. on examining under the hood the power steering pump pulley was visibly out of alignment and the belt was wrapped around the fan. closer examination revealed that the power steering pump bracket was broken into three pieces. i also have one bolt sheered off with the stud still stuck in the cylinder head. i have acquired a replacement part but the necessary replacement bolt was out of stock. before repairs can proceed, i will need to drill the existing bolt out, possibly having to remove the cylinder head assy to gain the proper access. although no injuries resulted, the car is not drivable in this condition and the failure has caused my family major inconvenience. had this happened at a different time the consequences could have been much more severe. *jb

I was having brake trouble with the cherokee and for a month i knew i had to get brake pads on my truck 1996 grand cherokee. on august 21, 2003 i was in car accident which caused me to loss control of the vehicle and not be able to gain it back i went up on two and crashed into a median the truck over three times and i came out of the seat belt and landed in the passenger seat. i did have on my seat belt but came up out of it. i think the rotors may have been corrdid and helped with the accident my second concern is how i was able to come out of the seatbelt and become severely injured. i shattered my leg and had to relearn to walk. i just went through my second surgery pertaining to this accident. what steps do i need to go through in order to get the word out about the seatbelt issue and the fact that it didnt secure me from the accident. my head still went into the windshiled and i think something happened with the air bags as well because they were torn by the time the truck stopped rolled and my head istill went into the windowshield and was cut up bad. *ak

Vehicle stalls while driving with foot on gas causing potential accident without warning. crankshaft sensor was replaced to correct problem. this also ocurred in march, 2003. the same sensor was replaced to correct problem. vehicle will not run without this sensor, and there is no saftey default mode provided to the computer to keep vehicle running if crank sensor circuit fails.*ak

My jeep has been really loud for sometime and is getting louder. it is when you start it up (really bad) and the whole time it's running. i ask my mechanic and he said to try a heat riser. when we went to the jeep dealer to order it, the parts guy said we could try the heat riser, but more than likely it was a cracked/busted manifold. when we looke, the manifold is cracked in two or three places. i have contacted several mechanics in my area...they all say the same thing....manifolds on these jeeps are bad about cracking. the manifold lists for $431 and they say about $200 to put one in. plus, i have been told that it's no good to fix the one from the manufacturer by welding it, because it will crack again. the suggestion i am getting is to buy a new aftermarket manifold...all the mechanics say they work better because they have 2 pieces on them that give for extra support. i think this is really sad. one single mechanic in the small town i live in has replaced at least 5 in the past year. i think this is overwhelming! there seems to be a defect in this part to me.

Second gear is slipping. some of the seals are leaking. one of the gears are stripped.

My 1996 jeep grand cherokee limited, will not pass safety inspection because it's exhaust manifold is cracked and leaks exhaust gases. the problem seems to be common among grand cherokee owners with the 6 cylinder, 4 l engine. the manifold failed due to a stress crack that developed from uneven expansion and contraction during normal operation. the local jeep/chrysler dealer informed me that the part fails in almost all 6 cylinder jeep cherokees and that the present replacement parts are redesigned not to break from stress cracks from normal heating. this tells me that the manufacturer knows of the safety problem, has redesigned it, and is trying to make money off the safety failure. the replacement expense for this safety inspection failure is very high. estimated cost of the replacing the defective manifold by the dealer is $1100 to $1200. i have found that this is a very common problem and that a great percentage of grand cherokees with the 6 cyl., 4 l., engine experienced a safety defect from a cracked exhaust manifold. this is my third jeep and for the price paid i expected higher quality and a safer vehicle. *nlm

While driving vehicle began to smoke. driver pulled the vehicle to the side of the road, and vehicle caught on fire due to a malfunction in the catalytic converter. *ak

On december 12, 2003, for the second time in three years, the fuel pump on our jeep failed. in discussing the failure with two different mechanics and then with our local jeep dealer, i was advised that jeep had determined that the gas tank for this vehicle is subject to corrosion whereby minute particles float in the tank and can travel into the fuel pump (the filter that jeep puts in these cars is not designed to trap these small particles) causing the fuel pump to freeze. i was advised by the jeep dealership that a tsb was issued in 1997 regarding this failure (i believe it is tsb 140697). i note that there are at least 42 reports of similar problems on your website. this is a safety problem that jeep has refused to acknowledge or take any responsibility for.*ak

On august 28, 1999, while driving, the steering wheel and front tires began shaking violently, the vehicle went out of control and jumpbed the curb on the highway, there was no damage done to the vehicle, however the driver who is pregnant experienced cramping in the stomach and was ordered by her doctor to spend the weekend in bed. the dealer stated that the steering gear was worn, the center link needed repair, and that both tie rods needed replaced. on october 9, 1999, the vehicle hit a sink hole causing it to shake violently and for the front end to wobble, the vehicle hit a guardrail and damage was done to the vechile. the cruise control didn't work properly. the airbag light was illuminated.

Vehicle was stopped at a red light and was hit by another vehicle from the rear traveling approx. 62-71 mph according to police calculations. rear end collison resulted in driver side front seat/seatback collapsing to the rear just after impact. is the seat suppose to collapse from this type of rear end collison or is it a defect? should the seat have stayed in the upright position? the collapsing of the seat may have saved the occupants life. does the safety board test these types of rear end accidents at these speeds to test the integrity of the seats? mr

While backing out of a parking space, i heard a loud snap and the suddenly lost the power steering. i could not make it home and had the vechicle towed to a local service station. the aaa tow truck man noticed that the serpentine belft was off the pulley. the power steering pump bracket snapped off the engine block. the head to one of the bolts on the bracket sheered off, leaving the stud in the engine block (probably needs to be drilled out or rebored). i plan to replace the part with the same aluminum dealer part, but i am very concerned about the related safety issue. i had my wife, infant and 3-yr old son in the car. if this would have happened at highway speeds or on a sharp turn, the results could have been disastrous. the dealership claims that this is a typical problem and the bracket can break. this is unacceptable!. *ak

I understand that earlier model years have a recall or something similar becasue of a coating used on the inside of the gas tank that gets eaten away over time by an additive in the gas that is used in the north. this lining then clogs the pump and filter causing failure. the cost of parts and labor endied up being over 800 dollars. if this is a known problem why isn't it taken care of? mr

The detail around this is that the bracket holding the power steering pump failed and the pump fell and knocked off the steering drive belt causing the power steering to fail. the car was not controlable even at these low speeds. if this would have happened at freeway speeds, this could have disastrous with fatalities. because one half of the bolt remained, it had to be drilled out from the engine,block, rethreaded and then a new bracket put on costing $290.32.

Exhaust manifold is cracked on my 1996 jeep grand cherokee. the problem seems to be common among grand cherokee owners. this is my third grand cherokee and this is the second that it has happened to. i never had the money to fix the other and sold it as is. chrystler is admitting that the design is a failure when the replacement part has been redesigned. the jeep service departments and other muffler repair shops notice the cracked mainifold as a common defalt and have made this repair many times. when i purchased the 1996 jeep grand cherokee. i had no plans for a built in cost of this magnitude (dealer cost approx. $1200.00). i have not reserved this dollar amount to repair the jeep in my budget and will have to live with the noise and poor performance or find an alternative way to fix it. it is my opion that the design was not sufficienctly tested for wear and should be replaced by chrysler. i have searched for recalls and class action law suits with no success. please provide any information that maybe helpful in providing assistance or retribution for repairs. if the research were conducted the results would more than likely show that a great precentage of grand cherokee's have suffered from this cracked exhaust.*ak

I bought this grand cherokee from san jose dodge as a lease-back vehicle with 27,000 miles on it. at 51 mph, the right front tire vibrated severely, especially when entering a left curve; however at this speed the vibration is always noticeable. the vehicle also pulls to the right at all times. i took the vehicle back to san jose dodge, where i purchased it, and they replaced the steering dampener. this did not solve the problem. i had new tires placed on the vehicle in mid 2000, and had the front end aligned. this minimized the vibration, but it was still noticeable. as the tires have worn down, the vibration has gotten worse. i've since relocated to connecticut. i took the vehicle to capitol chrysler dodge jeep and asked them to check the front end for this problem. the technician, joseph e. paradis, says that the tires are "out of round". i've had two sets of tires on this vehicle, and the problem is only in the front right side. i think there is a mechanical defect that neither dealer is either admitting to, or knowledgable about.*ak

I was driving on a rural road at about 50 mph when the car began shaking and the steering wheel jerked back and forth. the shaking became very violent and the wheel began traveling back and forth a good 12 - 14 inches. the car was bouncing up and down and shaking i tried to apply the brakes but the shaking was too rough and i lost control of the steering wheel. the car was all over the road and began going toward the right side and then went off the road. the shaking stopped and we rolled to a stop. if we had been in traffic i would have hit someone and if i were on the freeway the car would have rolled ! this happened suddenly. i take my jeep in for all reguler and scheduled maintenance. i didn't have any warning the part was going to break and at the ted miles jeep dealer where i take the car for service they said there is about a 10% failure on this part but they had not actually had one break suddenly before! i could have lost my life and others could have been injured . the shaking was so violent that the seams on the radiator were split and i had to buy a new radiator also. since the shear force was so great i am left wondering if other parts of the front end and car in general are somehow damaged or weakened. i contacted chrysler-damion corp. and they took the report on july 27th. i have medical injuries as a result of trying to control the steering wheel and being shook back and forth. i hope this gets addressed as a recal issue because they know it is a proplem but have done nothing about it!!!*ak

Since 1998 i have had numerous problems with my jeep stranding me due to a fuel pump failure. i had my jeep towed now 5 times for this problem. when the dealer finally gets the time, a day or two later the jeep would start. then again in two weeks the same problem would occur. and they tell me that there is nothing wrong with it. now just recently it again has done the same thing and the mechanic told me it is the fuel pump again. i have read numerous other complaints concerning the same issue, and was wondering if you could please help me with this problem. it is really bad when you have to be afraid to take a trip with a vehicle you don't even know if you can rely on. please get back to me and let me know what steps i can take in resolving this problem.*ak

Upon seeing the nhtsa is reviewing the grand cherokee for transmission problems i believe my jeep is exibiting similar problems. the drive stick has always been moveable from the drive or reverse postion into neutral without depressing the button. i have also exprerianced the car slipping gears while idling.*ak

My jeep was on level ground. i put it into "park" with the engin, e still running in order to get out of the vehicle to momentarily check on something. perhaps 30 seconds later when i was about 15 feet from the vehicle, it jumped into reverse and rammed into two cars parked behind it. there were no passengers in the jeep. no one in the cars was hurt. the jeep was not damaged but the two cars were. the incident was reported to my insurance company.*ak

I was driving northbound in the 1996 jeep (a federal government vehicle) on a multiple lane divided highway (posted speed limit of 45 mph) and came to a complete stop at an intersection for a red light. my vehicle was the first northbound car to stop at the intersection. i was wearing my seat belt and shoulder harness with my foot on the brake while stopped here. several seconds later, an inattentive driver in a pickup truck collided into the left-rear portion of my vehicle at a witness-estimated speed of about 30 mph. following the impact, the shoulder restraint system did not restrain my upper body. as a consequence, my head hit the steering wheel with sufficent force to cause multiple head and neck trauma including contusions, lacerations, muscle strain, a fractured nasal bone and septum, a severe headache, lingering pain, and delayed vertigo. my injuries would have been much more severe had i been wearing my eyeglasses or sunglasses. the jeep was propelled through the controlled intersection and eventually came to a stop in the southbound left-hand turn lane; it did not collide with any other objects. i expressed my concerns to daimler-chrysler officials about the "apparent" failure of the shoulder restraint system to prevent my injuries and they launched an investigation. their findings were that "the shoulder restraint system was not designed to restrain the driver in a rear end collision". if this is the case and if the shoulder restraint mechanism in this jeep is the current automotive industry standard in the u.s., then i would recommend federal regulations requiring vehicle manufacturers to: (1)design an improved industry-wide shoulder restaint system(s) to better protect motor vehicle operators and passengers from sustaining traumatic head injuries in rear-end collisions; (2)install such an improved restraint system in all new autos and trucks; and (3)provide opportunities to install these improved restraints in vehicles made earlier. *ak

The jeep was reversed up a driveway and placed in park. the driver got out of the vehicle, then about 20 seconds later, the jeep jumped into reverse and drove across the street and was stopped by a ditch. the hand brake was not activated. i did not report it at the time because i thought it must have been a driver error, but i saw the safety report on cnn (7/4/01) and realized that the incident was due to a defect. *ak

While warming up jeep in garage on flat surface i proceded to exit vehicle to return to the house, upon closing the door the jeep began to roll backwards i attempted to open the door and return to the vehicle i was unable to enter the vehicle drug me out the garage the front driver's door was bent forward to the bumper by the side of the garage i was squished between the side of the garage and the jeep. upon leaqving the garage i continued to attempt to stop the vehicle by pressing the brake with my hands i was unable to do this imy feet slipped on the ice in the driveway and i fell beneth the vehicle. the left front wheel ran over my left leg at the calf. ithe vehicle continued to roll until it came to a stop in a pile of snow against a light pole on the opposite side of the streed. at that time the vehicle started to roll forward and was stopped by the snow. the driver's door could not be closed, the engine would not start due to hitting the light pole with the bumper the collesion device was activated. i was taken to the emergency room with damaged nerves and tissue luckily no broken bones. the vehicle was taken to the jeep dealer in anchorage alaska where they replaced some parts and fixed the door. no action was taken despite my attempts at that time to notify the manufacturer through the dealer of the defective system that allowed the jeep to slip into reverse.*ak

Jeep was in park for about 30 secs. returned to jeep and found it starting to move in reverse. it picked up speed and in running after it i fell and hurt my knee. got back up and chased jeep for about 50 ft. it backed up into uphill driveway and slowed down. i was able to open door and pull parking brake which stopped jeep. i noticed that it still was in park. *ak

I have experienced two incidents in the past three months involving my placing the vehicle into "park" and having the vehicle move in reverse while idling. there is also a frequent locking of the shift mechanism after sitting for periods. the shifter becomes locked in the "park" position and i must use force to remove the shifter from the "park" position. this produces the sound of breaking plastic although i notice no other adverse affects to the shifting. i had thought on both occassions when the car went into reverse on its own that i had merely misplaced the shifter, but now i think not. please keep me informed as to any possible manufacturer adjustment or recall of the problem.*ak

My wife was going to work on 08/14/00. she warmed the jeep up, drove up to the porch, left the engine running and placed the jeep in park. while inside the house, she noticed the jeep suddenly lurched and started moving backwards( this was on a nonpaved flat surface). . she ran out the house to try and stop it, but too late. luckily, it drove through my pump house in the back yard. the wheels rolled over a 4" high cement base which lodged the wheels to a stop.. it had shoved out the door and side of a 10' x 10 ' shed covering my water pump. it put a dent in my rear hatch door top and busted the rear left turn signal. i did not report it to police because it was in my yard and it did not dawn on me the transmission may have jumped out of park. however, on approximately april 12,2001 i had placed it in park , with the engine running, when suddenly it jumped in reverse with me still sitting in the seat. i immediately braked and again placed the shifter into park. nothing happened again, so i just shrugged it off as one of those things. but the other day i was talking with another jeep owner who had the same thing happen. so, i would like to report this incident in case others have had the same problem. i do not leave my jeep running in park at any time now, i do not trust it. plus, with the warranty runout, i fiqured nothing would be done about it anyway and i would just go through a lot of expense checking it for nothing. but, i do believe there is some kind of intermittent problem with these transmissions.*ak

I pulled my jeep grand cherokee into my bank parking lot, put it in park and spent a few moments getting out my bank card. then, i got out of my car and left the driver door open. went to the teller machine, inserted my card, i.d. info, etc. then turned to see my car just starting to back away. because of the way the wheels were turned, it basically backed in a circular motion and proceed to go right through a small shopping mall and the plate glass window of a shop. no one was hurt but substantial damage to the shop, mall and my car. geico paid for the damages to the shop and mall but i never cashed their check for my car because it was insufficient to get repairs at three different shops and i was waiting until i could round up the extra dollars i would need to have the repairs made.made.*ak

Car went into reverse when parked "park" reversed into a tree down the driveway at about 10 mph. there was extensive damage to the rear end. then, two months later, i was parked in park in front of our farm gate, motor running, when i hopped out to get the mail from the box across the lane. as i started to leave the open door, the car started to move from the stopped position in reverse. i ran alongside and jumped back it and stomped on the brake. it was this time that i looked at the gear shift and noted that it had moved from the park position to a place just above the r for reverse but indeed was in reverse! my body shop person had informed me of another jeep owner who was pinned against his garage door when his jeep grand cherokee went from park into reverse. i can get him to get in touch with this organization. the dealers response to me was "i propbably did not have it in gear properly and did i have the parking brake on?" believe me when i say.....i sure put it on now and check it double but sure don't trust it enough to idle in park......although after driving for 35 years i have never had the problem with other cars or trucks! the fuel pump had evidently been a problem for them as the dealer said that there have been several failures "but no recall" the pump has to be replaced by factory part at $500 plus dollars with an additional $700.00 for labor to install "and even then, we can't guarantee it but for 6 months! thanks to the la times for the article on the jeep reverse problem and i will bet you that there are more than a "small' number of complaints regarding this issue.*ak

The fuel gage does not properly indicate the amount of fuel in the tank. the electrical system shorts frequently, locking and unlocking the doors, opening and shutting windows by itself. the alarm system also shorts frequently, doing the same thing.

I put the vehicle in park, stepped out of the car, turned around and glanced at the car, and saw that it was rolling backwards down the street. i ran to jump into the car, landed chest first on the driver seat, with my legs dangling out the door. i saw that the vehicle was in reverse, rather than park, as i had left it. i threw the car into park. it kept rolling, picking up speed and forcing my body to begin slipping out the door. i reached for the foot brake, couldn't reach it, and fell out the door. the vehicle's wheels rolled 12 inches from my head. i jumped up and watched the vehicle crash into a neighbor's garage and stop. i don't know the dollar cost damage to the garage. *ak

The transmission was rebuilt in jan.2001. on may 4th, 2001 i took vechile to amocco transmission to get a diagnostic of the transmission. was told there was a problem, since my vechicle was still under warranty, was told to take back to dealer. jerry's linclon-jeep dealer had my vechilce for two weeks and said nothing was wrong with the transmission, i gave them amocco's diagnotic report. on 5/20/01 i was driving on rt 81 south -va, when i put my jeep in to 4 wheel drive, it started to burn, called 911 and told to get out of vechicle. the jeep then proceeded to catch on fire. the woddstock,va fir department put out fire. it was towed to the woodstock garage(jeep dealer). it is estimated to have about $7500 worth of damage. i was told by my insurance company it might be totaled.. *ak

The catalytic converter failed at 47280 miles. chrysler refused to cover the components because the car has a salvage title, even though the component is still under warranted. which is 8 years/ 80,000 miles. *ak

Great weather, smooth road, a bottom of a hill, left rear axle broke at 60 mph causing the vehicle to spin and then roll. left rear wheel totally separated from vehicle. vehicle was a total loss after rolling and landing upside down.

The tire provided for the spare tire recall is not the recomended tire size for the vehicle. the owners manual says only the factory specified tire can go on an all time four wheel drive vehicle. however jeep still provided a different tire size. in addition with the larger spare inside the rear compartment, you can no longer use the safety netting or the privacy cover because the tire is larger than the original spare. the safety netting is very important in a crash to keep objects from hitting occupants inside. you can now no longer use the netting. the manufacturer needs to provide the correct spare!!!*ak (tiresize: 245/75-16)( dot number: tire size: 245/75-16 )

The transmission problem may have existed when we purchased car. but being that it was new to us, we did not know the difference between a good or bad transmission. i did at first say something to the dealership about the transmission, but they said it was fine that this is how it normally is. but the same issue that i have felt since day number one of our purchase is exactly what is wrong with it today. i have also found out from several different transmission specialists that chrylser jeeps have an inherent problem with their transmissions. they all fail for the same exact reasons. it is apparently an inherent defect in the transmission.*ak

While driving approx. 40 mph, the driver swerved to avoid hitting a deer and the vehicle overturned, rolling twice. the airbags did not deploy, i assume because we weren't struck from the front, and my seatbelt didn,t secure, i also assume for the same reason. i was the passenger and was caught hanging half out the passenger window and the vehicle rolled over me breaking both hips and my pelvis. this happened on july 30, 2000 in shelby county, texas. due to some other reports i have heard i have learned that jeep cherokees have a history of overturning easier than another style of vehicle perhaps. *ak

Was driving on i35w heading south in tarrent county texas. was doing posted speed of 70m/hr and had the tread come off of the back right tire. vehicle was in 2 wheel drive at this time. lost control for a breif instant. got stoped safely, and put on spare tire. went to dealer to have vehicle checked 2 days later when open. found alinment was now off. had allinment fixed. went to firestone dealer in denton, tx and requested help. offered to replace tire with a new one. answer was not acceptable, because replacing one tire would give poor handiling characteristics. tried e-mailing firestone, got a reply about the recal of the tires that did not afect me. tried calling firestone, said they could not help. i do not feal safe driving my vehicle with firestones on it any longer and am wishing to try to get a different brand of tires to replace them. i can provide pictures of the damaged tire, and e-mail them upon request. *ak (dot number: 8xhl tiresize: p23575r15)

I was stopped at a red light wan about one minute later i was rear-ended by a chevy blazer. i had my seat belt and shoulder harness on but the top roller on the shoulder harness did not grab. for that reason my head hit first the steering wheel and then the windshield, leaving me with a fractured nose and contusion on my forehead. i believe the blazer must have been traveling around 45 mph because that is the speed limit on that road and he did not try and stop at all (complete inattention): there were no skid marks until after where he hit us. we were sent clear throught the intersection and up the sidewalk. luckily there was no cross traffic or pedestrians. *ak

This vehicle has cost us over $3,000 in the first 1 year and half we have owned it. i have never owned a vehicle with this little of mileage and had everything go up. we feel this auto is a total lemon and people should be made aware of the problems of this particular vehicle. we have never towed anything nor had it on anything other surface other than a paved road. i'm not sure what if anything you can do for us, but letting the nhtsa know about this vehicle is some reassurance. what really upsets me is that we bought this vehicle from a supposed reputable dealer. thank you for your time. i'd appreciate any information you can provide me on this particular vehicle as far as any other owner complaints etc. thank you for your time and attention to this matter. no safety defect listed within summary. *ak

Since the brake disc rotor was recalled on my car i wondered whether any other owners had a problem with the rusting of front axle joints and calipers hanging up. thank you!*ak

The fuel pump has been replaced four times and it has failed again and willbe towed to the dealers tomorrow 11/3/00. the dealer has told us it will cost us $900.00 to replace it again. please let us know what recourse we should proceed with. *ak

Sending unit of fuel system fails now when fuel reaches 1/4 of tank; jeep dealer is aware of the problem; a number of instances have been reported; chrysler however has not issued a recall. nhtsa has issued a recall on 1997 jeep grand cherokees for this exact same problem. recall should extend over to 1996 models as well.*ak

I sent a detailed letter to daimler chrysler after being refused by dealer. they only refunded my money for the cost of the front rotors. they would not reimburse me for the labor charges. i can't understand how they can do that when i had them replaced before the recall. that should show there is a problem. i wrote about all my problems with this "lemon" but i could not claim it was a lemon because i was leasing it at the time and in pa, a vehicle can only be declared a "lemon" when it is purchased, not leased. very dissatisfied with daimler/chrysler because they simply washed their hands of the entire problem. i have other problems to report, along with the receipts to prove they were investigated but nothing was ever done to correct the problems. please contact me to forward all receipts proving complaints before warranty expired. thank you

This vehicle came with 16" tires. the original spare was a donut . this was recalled . they gave me a 15" tire for a spare. how can the car be safely driven when it has 16" tires if i put a 15" spare on in an emergency. nut and was recalled . the dealer gave me a full size 15" spare tire. when i complained to him that the car came with standard 16" tires he said that is all we are obligated to give you. how can a car that came with 16" tires

Replaced 4 fuel pumps in 5 weeks. occurs after parking and leaving vehicle. won't restart after parking. told i need to replace gas tank. problem got increasingly worse. 1st replacement-3 weeks, 2nd-6 days, 3rd-4 days. *ak

First differential failure happened on vacation trip after i installed two new tires. jeep started making high pitched whine & passengers & i could detect what smelled like hot fluids. stopped & noted liquid on engine, tires, and front differential. liquid was smoking! took to jeep dealer listed in this report & dealer rebuilt front differential. said all was ok. after 200 miles, front differential again failed and this time it was a major jolt! this time at 75 mph in heavy traffic! was able to maneuver thru traffic & get to side of road. front differential was "red hot!" & i was afraid of a fire. called jeep roadside assistance & they got me a tow. dealer where car was towed said front diff got so hot that it warped! also told me that the cause of failure was because i put new tires on front & not back. said difference in diameters on tires (new vs. worn) caused the quadra-trac drive to fail. later inquiry to damler-chrysler resulted in a "verbal" response that, "if there is as much as 1/2" difference in circumference of tires on the quadra-trac units, a drive train failure can occur." note that jeep had a recall on this type of full-time 4 wheel drives, but explained that a fire could result if a smaller spare tire was used. jeep should have gone further and explained that failure and fire could result from having tires with different circumferences. jeep has a file on my complaint, but wil not discuss or answer any questions. they also refuse to accept any responsibitlty and the "written response" was, "i have thoroughly reviewed your message and the entire file on this matter. your concerns are understandable. unfortunately there is nothing further that can be done to fully address these issues......" i now feel that jeep is well aware of the "potential safety hazard" associated with this situation and has down played it as much as possible by "just issueing a recall for spare tire usage". the public should be advised!

Shortage of evaporators and frequency of repairs indicates common problem

Rear differential ruined from use of smaller spare and driven only 21 miles at 50mph. uneven traction using smaller spare caused vehicle to be nearly unsafe at 50mph. a full size spare should mandatory.

Fracturing of defective power steering bracket lead to sudden and complete loss of power assist; serpentine drive belt also slipped off of pulleys, rendering generator, water pump, and other mechanical devices inoperable.

Vehicle vibration and load roaring noise reported 3 times to dealership. driveshaft was ordered but the parts were on back-order. we were told the vehicle was safe to drive, but the driveshaft vibration caused the transfer case to blow apart on the interstate at 70mph. this nearly cased the vehicle to go out of control. dealership then said the failure was due to vehicle abuse, but we had an independent mechanic and our auto insuance claims adjuster certify that the transfer case failure was due to the excessive vibration of the drive shaft. the bottom line: dealership knew we were driving an un-safe vehicle and tried to cover their error by accusing the customer of vehicle abuse. *ak

While driving down a residential street power steering suddenly did not respond. after looking under the hood i noticed the power steering pump was detached from the motor mounting. this bracket had separated in three places. i took this part to the dealer and was told that they new this was a defective part and they had already improved these with a new bracket but it was not their responsibility to replace them. if this would have happened at highway speed on a curve this may not have been a pleasant ending as total steering loss was experienced.*ak

When shifting transmission from park to reverse, the transfer case slips out from 4-low to neutral. *ak

I want to know if the time i used the temporary spare, in the rear of the car for a flat tire, had anything to do with the rear differential breaking. i rode on the temporary spare for approximatley 150 miles and the rear differential broke down approximately 10 months later.
