1996 DODGE Intrepid

While I was on vacation with my two small kids, my car when up in flames while I was driving.. Many diffrent certified mechanics inspected my car and came to the conclusion that it was the fuel rail o ring was leaking again, and was spraying fuel onto the mainfold and spark a flame.. I made a claim to Daimler Chrysler and they denied my claim…

Thermostat broke twice, check engine light wont stay off, and the steering which is supposedly a common defect stopped responding and is not able to be fixed.

The bolts holding the inner tirerods ends to the steering rack both broke at the same time, leaving the car uncontrolable. They both sheared off at the same place. The Lord was with my wife that day, for the failure occured when she was backing the car into the driveway, and not on the expressway she just had driven home on a few moments before. I called the local Dodge dealer to tell them about the problem, and asked what could cause such a serious failure of the steering system. They offered no explanation. I am very concerned about this failure, and what could have caused it. The vehicle has never been in any accidents. The steering rack was replaced once under warranty, when the rubber gromits, that are molded into the rack that hold it to the frame of the car failed, causing the rack to shift side to side when turning the wheels.This failure of total loss of steering could have resulted in serious injury or death to any parties involved in an accident that would have occured if this would have happened when travling down any busy road or expressway. It is my opinion, under normal driving conditions, these two bolts should have never failed as they did. Please advise if you have ever had anyone else report such an incident. I look forward to hearing from you.

MY TRANSMISSION HAS CONTIUOUSLY FAILED AND HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP..WE DONT KNOW WHAT C0ULD BE WRONG..WE KEEP GUESSING AND PAYING OUT MONEY…WE STILL OWE 3600.00 ON THE CAR…AS WELL THE AIR BAG HAS BEEN DEPLOYED AND IS STILL IN THE DASH, WITH A SHRUNKEN PANEL DISPLAYING IT! THE INTERIOR LIGHTS STAY ON AND RUN DOWN THE BATTERY, THE POSITIVE TERMINAL TO THE BATTERY HAS FAILED/ LAST YEAR THE INNER TIRE ROD ASSEMBLY FAILED, IN JUNE WE DISHED OUT 270.00 FOR THE AIR CONDITIONER, AND IT IS STILL NOT FIXED, IT ONLY WORKS WHEN IT FEELS LIKE IT.THE CLEAR COAT ON THE PAINT IS PEELING AROUNG THE WINDSHIELD. WE ARE STUCK PAYING FOR A LEMON THAT DOESNT RUN HALF OF THE TIME BECAUSE THE TRANSMISSION IS SUCH A MYSTERY, IT CONTIUOUSLY STAYS IN LIMP HOME MODE..WE REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE, THE INTAKE AND OUTTAKE SENSORS AND NOW WE ARE TAKING IT BACK TO RE-DIAGNOSE THE TRANSMISSION. WITH ALL OF THE LABOR, DIAGNONOS’ AND PARTS WE HAVE PUT INTO THE TRANSMISSION ALONE, WE COULD HAVE A NICE LITTLE NEST EGG…WE JUST GOT MARRIED, AND ARE TRYING TO SAVE MONEY FOR A DOWN PAYMENT ON OUR FIRST HOUSE..WE CANT AFFORD THIS CAR’S REPAIRS. CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP AT OUR LOCATION WAS A TOTAL SMART ELLIC…AND WAS UNWILLING TO EVEN ACT LIKE HE CARED…WHAT KIND OF “ROLLING PIECE OF CRAP” DID WE BUY?

multi function switch failed….started smoking…..I\’ve owned the car from day one….this is the third time I\’ve had to replace the multi function switch.

I JUST TURNED 18 AND GRADUATED HIGH SCHOOL GOT A JOB BOUGHT A SO CALLED GOOD USED INTREPID. IT LOOKED AS THOUGH IT WAS WELL MAINTAINED I PAID OVER $3,300 FOR THE CAR AND TAXES. I DROVE IT FOR LESS THAN TEN DAYS AND LESS THAN 200 MILES. NOW IT WILL NOT SHIFT OUT OF FIRST GEAR. I TOOK IT TO THE DODGE DEALER WHERE THEY SAID THE TRANSMISSION KICKEDOUT 4 DIFFERANT INTERNAL CODES. THEY SAID IT HAD TO BE REPLACED. THEN I FOUND OUT ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE THAT HAS HAD PROBLEMS WITH THEIR INTREPID TRANSMISSIONS.IF DODGE WOULD HAVE POSTED A LETTER OF THE PROBLEMS THEY HAVE HAD WITH THE INTREPID TRANSMISSIONS I WOULD HAVE NEVER BOUGHT A DODGE INTREPID! I LIKE THE CAR BUT THE BANK THAT I RECEIVED THE LOAN THROUGH SAID THE CAR IS NOT WORTH $5,700.00. THAT IS HOW MUCH THAT 1996 DODGE INTREPID WILL END UP COSTING ME. NOT COUNTING THE LOSS OF TRANSPORTATION TO GET TO AND FROM WORK.

I have had the rear right brakes repaired 7 times and it\’s still not fixed last time my right rear wheel caught on fire. The Dodge dealership refuses to help me in finding out if my car has been recalled. The brakes seem to keep heating up and the brakes just fall off once the hub is removed. Also Drivers side window only works when it wants too. Water seeping into the trunk, tie rod ends inner and outer have been replaced in 2001, and I am once again having problems with them. Headlamps have moisture in them and are peeling.

I bought this car less than two weeks ago, I have not even put two thousand miles on the car and the transmission has quit working in third and fourth gear. the motor has begun to use oil and is knocking. While driving,the car loses power and even dies. It also,while idling,begins to revs the engine to an unsafe level and you must shut the car off. I contacted the dealer I bought the car from, GREENE COUNTY AUTO AUCTION & SALES – 6319 HWY. 49 SOUTH Paragould, AR 72450. The salesman I bought the car from didn’t want to take the car back and was extremaly rude when I suggested that he try to work with me on getting the car fixed or trading it in. As I said I have had the car but a short time and all these problems are occuring. He assured me that the car was in good condition and that he had, had it serviced and checked out and there was nothing wrong with it.

1999 fuel rail O-rings were replaced in a recall. In 2003 fuel injector O-rings were replaced. In February, 2005 Dodge indicates the fuel rail is leaking gasoline onto engine and that fuel injector O-rings must be replaced a second time. Dealer indicates the 2005 problems are not covered under a recall, and the vehicle is dangerous to drive since it can catch on fire.

engine keeps over heating and my lower ball joints tends to come lose and I’ve had so many problems with the transmission I had 3 transmissions installed since jan.

Takata recall: i was involved in a head on collision in which the airbag deployed and a piece of metal went through my eye causing immediate blindness and subsequent loss of the left eye. the piece of metal was pull out in the er. there were no other injuries. this happened on a city street in detroit mi traveling about 20 mph. i've been wearing a prosthetic eye since.

After purchasing car from auction, we took for emissions testing in order to purchase a tag. we were told the test could not be done because the computer had not finished the tests. we were advised how to complete the driving requirements and to come back after that. after several trips the tests still showed incomplete. now six years later the odbii still will not complete and actually restarts every time the car is started. after lots of research we discovered the problem has been widespread and a defect that requires the ecu to be flashed with updated program information. there is even a tsb #181897 which covered this. dealers are either unaware of this problem or want to charge close to $100. we believe that they should do this service at no charge since it is s defect that they are aware exists. there are no codes being thrown and we have been unable to tag the car for many years.

The air bag light stays on constantly which affects the electric windows & the heating/ac component. when the air bag light came on the windows & heater/ac stopped working. additionally, the steering wheel locking mechanism is defective because it does not lock the steering wheel at all when the ignition is in the off position. i had a 1993 dodge intrepid with the same airbag light problem described above, i was able to get the light to go off at times by adjusting the steering wheel which allowed the electric windows and heater/ac to work until the light would come back on. the difference is i cannot get the airbag light to turn off at all on the 1996 model, the difference being between the two models is that the 93 had the gear shifter on the floor console; while 96 is on the column. the fact that the 93 and 96 both have the same airbag light affecting the electric windows & the heater/ac is not a coincidence. i've been told by mechanics that one thing should affect the other, but my personal experience shows that to be untrue. in my opinion there is a safety issue with either the sensors or something in the ignition switch, or possibly the wiring within the steering column due to possibility of manufacturing issues. this does pose as a safety issue because the windows will not roll down and the heater/ac will not cool/heat the car and the defroster cannot clear the windows of condensation; which creates obstructed view. the nonworking heater/ac severely restricts the times you can drive the car, unless you would like to risk heat exhaustion during summer or frostbite during the winter. *tr

Vehicle was getting serviced for an oil change when technicians noticed the smell of gasoline in the engine oil. the vehicle was taken to a shop where the fuel rail was deemed to be leaking gasoline. the vehicle/part was listed (according to chrysler) as having been replaced in 1999. *tr

On 15mar12 at approximately 5:30pm i was driving around a slight curve when the steering wheel suddenly pulled to the left. i immediately corrected while letting off the accelerator. after i regained control, the steering still felt extremely loose. *tr

I have owned a 1996 dodge intrepid for 6 months now and when i bought the car i was aware that the steering was a little loose, what i did not know was that the entire rack and pinion system as well as most of the tie rods around them were completely shot. my steering wheel grinds when i turn it left and right now and my steering has a horrific drift when turning from extreme to extreme. the bushings on the rack and pinion (as told by my mechanic) are completely gone. the broken pieces are rattling and vibrating so violently that the shimmying i feel on my car is actually caused by the steering. when i brake at high speeds (50mph) the steering pulls to either an extreme left or right. after doing research, i found out that i wasn't the only one struggling with these same issue. it seems like every owner of a 1996 dodge intrepid is experiencing the exact same issues. my mechanic said to me that he has no guarantee that my steering will work right. driving down the road now i'm afraid i'll lose control of the vehicle. my girlfriend might frequently drive the vehicle but i am afraid that the steering may go out when she is driving it. i spoke with my mechanic and i am in the process of getting the defective parts replaced. i plan to save the parts that are defective in hopes that i will get some compensation for them. *tr

The airbag light will not go off it stays on all the time when it is on the heater windows horn and rear back up lights and rear defroster do not work with no heater/defroster it is near impossible to keep the ice off the inside and outside of the windows even while having the passenger constantly trying to scrape off the ice it just instantly re freezes causing very dangerous and hazardous driving conditions due to this the car went off the road and crashed into a deep ditch the air bags did not deploy and we had to be towed out of the ditch with a hoist and a lift and back to the road by a commercial wrecker from what i have seen and heard when searching the internet for information this problem is most likely caused by the clock stop the same problem which prompted a recall on dodge and chrysler mini vans of the same year why wasn't this car recalled too? i know i am not the only one with this problem there are thousands and thousands of complaints listed on the internet for this same problem by other dodge intrepid owners this is a very serious safety hazard also the fact the windows don't work can cause entrapment in the vehicle

Rack and pinion problems, the bushings that hold the rack and pinion keep going bad i've had the bushings replaced (november 2007) but then it failed again (september 2008). when ever i go around a turn there's a delay in my sheer almost resulting in a crash. *tr

It started out my steering would get really tight and you couldn't move it at all and it happens everyday now we took it to the dealership and they said it was the rack-n-pinion and so they fixed it and its still doing it. *tr

Bolts holding tie rods to steering gear (rack) broke. unable to steer vehicle. fortunately, i was just leaving my parking lot and didn't cause any accidents and/or injuries. paid $700 to have car fixed. *tr

1996 dodge intrepid had to have alot of front end work done on tie rod ends and bushings worn out then while driving the car the brakes failed for no apparent reason and caused a accident whole front end totaled and the air bags did not deploy why is it that dodge auto air bags do not deploy. *tr

Repeated overheating problems resulted in replacing my radiator two times, thermostat three times and thermostat w/ breather housing two times. cooling system includes external metal pipes which help circulate coolant to heater. the pipes are hidden from clear view and when mine sprung leaks due to their placement the leaks were diagnosed as being blown head/head gasket by three separate shops. replacement of pipes solved overheating. moisture gets trapped in and around the frame and subframe areas where the motor and transmission mounts are located and allows for unnecessary premature deterioration of all the mounts, bushings, main frame and subframe. this hidden condition has resulted in all mounts needing replacement, transmission dropping, front inner&outer tie rods and bushings going out, rack n pinion problems and the subframe collapsing. documented records show that from 2004 through 2008 on average i drove 7000 miles a year. in that 28000 miles i replaced all motor/transmission mounts, all 4 inner&outer tie rod bushings/ends twice, radiator twice, thermostat housing twice, coolant pipes once and have gone through two sets of tires. i am replacing subframe, transmission mounts and front axle again. i continue fixing the car because i cannot afford to replace it but i am getting very concerned about the steering, axle or brakes giving out while driving on the highway or in heavier traffic. so concerned my documentation has been given to family members in case of fatality resulting from the defects mentioned. *tr

The steering system in a 1996 dodge intrepid totally failed while driving down the road. there was no advanced warning of any kind. it is by the grace of god that i did not wreck. the left bolt that screw into the rack/pin steering box stripped out and caused the right bolt to snap causing the entire steering to fail. *tr

On june 1st, 2007, i, sharon s. hatcher, went to tuffy auto service center to get my car inspected. they proceeded to inspect my vehicle when they hooked it up to the computer to pass onboard diagnostic ii [obd ii] language...my vehicle was rejected because the powertrain control module needs to be reprogrammed! well, i drove this car all day yesterday and last night and i took it to 2 other places and the same thing showed up like at tuffy auto service center!! i took it to steve white motors [chrysler, dodge, and jeep dealership] and their serviceman said to drive it around for 20-30 miles at a constant speed of 45-55mph. well, i did that and i took at back to tuffy's auto service center and the same bullentin popped up again as like at the other places. so the complait that i am filing is on a 1996 dodge intrepid. i have been to 3 different places to get my car inspected and at all 3 places its showing the powertrain control module needs to be flashed or reprogrammed. the dodge dealership is not wanting to fix this problem. i have the technical service bullentin [tsb] reference number as along with paperwork from these places. i believe this to be a new recall on my vehicle that hasn't been researched or looked into on all makes of dodge intrepid's during 1996. i am not paying for a recall that has to do with. *tr

I purchased this vehicle used from a reputable dealer. all repairs are well documented. over the last 2 years there have been recurring problems with overheating that no one was able to diagnose. my husband went out to start the car after it had been sitting for approximately 12 hours and the engine burst into flames. thank goodness there was a snow bank or our house would have been a loss as well. through the internet i have discovered a recall for symptoms that we have experienced, without repair, but are listed in recall information. we are getting the run around about how to pursue repairing the vehicle under the recall provisions. *ak

My 1996 dodge intrepid received a clean air waiver in the years 2003 and 2004. the obd could not be read by the emissions stations. for the past two years i have tried to rectify this problem without resolution. the clean air force says the software is updated and should be readable and dodge insists it's the caf software. there is a technical service bulletin (18-005-01) for 1996 dodge vehicles failing for readiness. i keep failing for readiness, and the dealer nor clean air has further information. i have been without my vehicle for two weeks while a master mechanic tries to solve my situation. the length of time tells me a favorable reply may not be forthcoming. i was told i can not sell the car, as the emissions issue will always be my (the owners) problem. i can not get a tag for this car and therefore legally can not drive it. what can i do? *jb

Tl*- the contact stated that he took his 1996 dodge intrepid to the goodyear auto shop 1/11/07 and was told that gas was leaking from the o-rings and the fuel injectors. the goodyear auto center recommended for the vehicle to be taken to a dealership. the contact stated that the mechanic said the leak was coming from the end of the rail. the contact did take his vehicle to andy lewis dodge and was told that he would be charged for a diagnostic, and the repair. the contact stated that the dealership informed him that the recall was not for the hair line crack in the fuel injector rail. the contact stated that the dealership informed him that his vehicle did have the o-rings replaced back in 1999. the contact has all repair orders.

On 11-23-06 i noticed a gas leak in my wife's, now ex-wife's, 1996 dodge intrepid. i took the vehicle to a local repair shop and they informed me of a possible recall on the vehicle. i then took the vehicle to the local dodge dealership, pommering dodge. pommering mechanics checked the vehicle and the fuel rail was replaced at no cost under a prior recall related to bad o-rings in fuel rail. however, after fuel rail was replaced, dealership found that the o-rings in the fuel injector were also bad. o-rings and fuel injector were replaced at my expense, total cost $295.32. i inquired but the dealership explained that the fuel injector o-rings were not included in the recall. it seems apparent to me that if there was a serious problem with the o-rings in the fuel rail necessitating a recall, there may very well be a similar problem with the fuel injector o-rings. *nm

Tl* - the contact a 1996 dodge intrepid which has a problem with the headlights: headlight mounting bracket, headlight assembly, and headlight lens are made of plastic corroded. the contact stated that this has been an ongoing problem. the failure caused poor visibility when the headlights werein use. speed and weather conditions were not a factor. the contact would like to have the headlights replaced by daimler chrysler. *ak

On 3/16/06 the engine in my 1996 dodge intrepid caught on fire out of the blue. this car only had 60,000-70,000 miles on it. an investigator for chrysler corp. looked at the car and filed a report with chrysler corp. apparently there was a recall in 1998 having to do with fuel leaking from the fuel injection rail or o-rings which i was never aware of. chrysler denied my claim and stated that they had sent me a notice in feb. 1999 at my current residence, although we did not even close on my house until may 1999. i never received a notice, and this fire was a result of a fuel leakage. when i called the customer claims resolution dept. and explained that i never knew about the recall etc. i was told that once chrysler makes a decision to deny a claim there can no rebuttal, and that i would need to contact a lawyer if i wanted to go any further in resolving this. needless to say it would cost a lot to get a lawyer so i am stuck paying the costs to repair the engine which was a result of a defect caused by the manufacturer. *nm

Yes, i would like to enter a complaint on the 1996 dodge intrepid steering problems. many people have had numerous problems with the steering , some even leading to death. i have not yet have any failures of my steering system, but it is going bad day by day. i don't have enough money to fix this problem (dealer quoted over $400), and it is my only form of transportation. i find myself praying every time i step into my casket on wheels that something wrong doesn't happen to me. i would like to know why there hasn't been any government recall for this item. this is not a maintenance issue with most other models so why should intrepid owners have to pay for the faulty design. please help me out in this issue. thanks. *ak

Dt*: the contact stated there was nhtsa recall campaign 98v184000 for the fuel system. the recall indicated the dealer would replace the fuel rail o-rings, and reinforce the outlet on passenger's side fuel rail. also, it indicated that if the vehicle showed signs of fuel leakage on the outlet fuel rail the upper and lower injector o-rings would need to be replaced. the recall lead the contact to believe that the outlet fuel rail, the upper and lower injector o-rings would be replaced as part of the recall remedy if necessary. she was informed by both the dealer and manufacturer that this was not true. the recall remedy was completed according to the dealer and manufacturer guidelines. additionally, the upper and lower injector o-rings were replaced. *ak the head gasket was replaced. updated 01/25/06. *jb

1996 dodge intrepid i bought this car as is and got it home after the same night i found out that the headlights don't work, which is a safety problem, i contacted the dealership that i got the car from the looked at it but would not fix it cause they claimed they didn't know the headlights didn't work, i even asked if they had to inspect the car before selling it, yes they did but never fixed the headlights... i would like this fixed asap. *nm

1. the event occurred while backing into my driveway 2. 1996 dodge intrepid, 3.5l, 196,000 miles. the lower control arm mount that is a structural element of the car's subframe had metal fatigued and separated from the subrfame. this caused the bottom of the front passenger side wheel to move outward and lodge against the fender. when the wheel moved outward, the half-shaft pulled out of the constant velocity joint disengaging the drivetrain from the front wheel. 3. the replacement cost of the subframe was prohibitively expensive, so the car is going to be scraped.*jb

1996 dodge intrepid w/3.5 engine heard loud bang,smoke and oil,knocking noise. no warning at all, the gauges were in normal range, no prior trouble with engine. had vehicle towed to goodyear tire store & upon inspection found two (2) holes in the right side of engine block near front of engine about the size of silver dollar,we think engine connecting rod for one cylinder failed and broke at bottom near crankshaft and punched both holes in block. *jb

Dt: the consumer states received nhtsa recall 04v021000/chrysler recall c45 on 1996 dodge intrepid concerning floor shift. the consumer took the car into the dealership to have repairs done, and the dealer did not have the parts available. the dealer said that they would call the consumer when they came in. the consumer received 3 notices from chrysler on this recall during this time. the owner said that he has called the dealer to see if the parts were there. it has been over 6 months and the parts were still not available. the consumer has not called the manufacturer. the consumer received the first notice in march 2005. and as of right now the consumer was stuck waiting on the parts.*ak

Purchased 1996 dodge intrepid in may 2005. following week had to take car back to dealer re: brakes, to no avail. a mechanic stated brakes will need to be replaced. was advised that tires were not in such great condition either. kept hearing strange sounds (rattling noises) from the car. in august, smoke started coming from under the hood. car would not steer at all. had to take car to mechanic, who told us fan belt had come off while driving. power steering pump had to be replaced and power steering line. he also advised that rack and pinion would need to be replaced. finally, on august 26th, was getting in car to drive and did not get very far, when the car came to a sudden stop and made a loud noise. got out of the car and found two bolts on the ground. please help !!! distressed. do we have any recourse here? have receipts, but do not have old parts. *jb *ak *nm

My son was traveling to work on august 10 2005. he was driving a 1996 dodge intrepid. he was turning a corner when his steering control was suddendly and completely lost. his car went over a curb at an elementary school before he was able to stop. no one was hurt. inspection of the car showed that 2 bolts that connect the tie rods to the rack and pinion steering were completely severed. a picture here is worth 1000 words. if you go to this site : http://www.allpar.com/fix/intrepid-steering.html you will see a clear picture of 2 center bolts that connect the inner tie rods to the rack and pinion steeing. these were the 2 bolts that suddenly broke leaving the car with no steering control. if that had happened a week earlier when i was traveling with my son on a super highway i am quite sure that several people would be going to the hospital or worse. after the incident, i fould on the internet that this is a common problem with this car. i feel that a recall should be done to replace these bolts. his car had 112,000 miles on when the incident occured. you're recall of these cars i feel would save other people's lives. thank you!

Dt: consumer stated that 1996 , dodge, intrepid had a bolt sticking out on both back doors. this was a manufacturing safety device to keep the door closed in case of a collision. consumer was in the back seat getting groceries out when her shoe string became entangled around the bolt and consumer fell on concrete and broke her hip. consumer did not realize that string was entangled around the bolt. consumer was rushed to the hospital, then she taken into surgery, she had to have 3 screws placed into her hip. consumer was in the hospital for 5 days . then, consumer was confined to a walker for several weeks until the bone healed. consumer continued with physical therapy. the accident happened on may 18, 2005. consumer had to be taken care of by someone else for quite a while. consumer was in contact with chrysler in june 2005. they sent an inspector to inspect the vehicle and take pictures. consumer received a letter from chrysler on july 5, 2005 stating that her claim was denied. consumer had not filed any claim with chrysler. all consumer wanted was the vehicle to be recalled so that the bolt could be removed. consumer had not taken anyone to chrysler. she just wanted to inform other people that the bolt was dangerous and could injure others more severely. also, consumer had not done anything with the vehicle, and vehicle was still being driven. *ak

Recently i took my 1996 dodge intrepid into a collision repair specialist due to severe paint chipping on my hood. i was informed that this is common with dodge vehicles - that the hoods and trunks are rusting from the inside out due to the seams being pinched welded which is allowing moisture to get inside. also found that the trunk is rusting from the inside out, but didn't know this until we were informed of the hood. the car only has 85,000 miles and has been taken care of very well. other than that - it is in top condition. *jb

I would first and formost like to report the premature wear of the steering rack on my 1996 dodge intrepid at around 77,000 miles. the rack had to be replaced at a hefty price. i have since learned that this is an alarmingly widespread problem with chrysler lh bodied vehicals, especially dodge intrepids, and has been for many years. i had the rack replaced about three years ago and already my car is showing symptoms of more steering related problems. i drive only a moderate amount so this could not be just "usual wear and tear". in addition to the steering rack, within the last three years i have had to have an axel replaced, all of the breaks due to prematurly warped rotors (the breaks actually went out once and i almost rear ended someone), the multifunction switch had to be replaced, the transmission shifts hard and gets stuck in gear for a mysterous reason no one can figure out, and a loose wire caused the car caused multable drivability problems. (the date below is not accurate, these things occured between 2003 and present)

I had a 1996 dodge intrepid purchased in 3/04 from original owner. on /1/99 he had the fuel rail recall performed at palmer dodge. in february 25 2005 i smelled gas from the engine compartment. i took the car to shadeland dodge on 2/18/05 and they said the fuel rail and o-rings needed to be replace again and did so under the recall. on 4/21/05 i smelled gas again and was on my way to shadeland dodge, when i had to stop at a stop light. the car then caught on fire under the front hood. the car was not repairable. *ak

The light gauges on the dashboard flickered on and off intermittently while driving. driver applied the brakes, and the pedal went to the floor while approaching the intersection. driver was able to maintain control of the vehicle by pulling over and turning off the vehicle. then, driver restarted the vehicle, and drove it to the dealer. mechanic determined that the electrical sensor needed to be replaced. *ak

Under normal driving conditions, automatic in "drive" position shifts into 3rd gear causing high [300-400k] rpm and high fuel consumption. condition can be corrected by stopping vehicle, turning switch off, waiting until signal lights have disappeared, then turning switch on again. this is also a safety hazard due to potential for rear-end collision while vehicle is in off. *ak

Recall campaign 04v021000 concerning floor shift ignition-park interlock. consumer has a problem with getting dealer to honor this manufacturer's recall notice. dealer is refusing to honor the recall. dealer advised consumer to take vehicle to another dealer. *ak

Have just began having problems apparently with the cernter take off system, have had it at the dodge dealership in kingsport (1-423-247-3155), they put steering bushings on it, costly repair, still did not touch the problem. i have a horrible problem steering the car, apparently there was a report issued to them about the system in 01-31-1999, but they did not notify the car owners. have thought i had problems with a starter pulley, noticed some engine shake, slightly, a little smoke around the back bumper, the car has 74 thousand miles on it, i have my records and the previous owners records of repairs and oil changes that have been kept up. online i have read of thousands of people who have wrecked and died because of the faulty center take off system of these cars, (bushings, the rack and pinion geer interface, inner tierod, on the steering gear) failure is unavoidable without a costly repair of the defective steering system at the owners expense. i have also read of engines siezing up at around 40 thousand miles even with proper matinence. i have no choice but to drive this car, i am disabled and cannot afford to buy another or have the factory defects fixed at my own expense. the dealership should have known about the noice of the lh family of cars, but instead have sent me down the road of costly repairs knowing full well that the repairs made will not fix this car. these cars are a hazzard and i cannot believe that the gov does not get involved and protect the consumer and others on the road from the prospect of horrible injuires and possible death due to this big corperation's faulty equipment. where do i go from here? *ak

While at a steering wheel locked up. the vehicle was towed. the dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. *ak

The vehicle was parked outside and driver was inside. another individual informed the driver that vehicle crashed into the building. driver took vehicle to the dealer, and mechanic determined that the shifter needed to be replaced. *ak

The vehicle has 55000 miles. the engine blew consumer has the 2.7 liter engine in the vehicle. consumer states that he has had the proper oil changes, and there was no warning upon the vehicle blowing. please provide any further information. *nm

Consumer received recall campaign 04v0021000 for floor shifter ignition park interlock. mechanic informed the driver that shifter cable was stretched, and driver was responsible for the payment of $200.00 to fix the problem. driver informed the mechanic that recall repairs were not performed, and the issue had not been resolved. *ak

I was involved in a car accident (i was the driver)in which my car was impacted by another vehicle (1997 full-size dodge van). the point of impact was the driver's side, the left front end of my vehicle (dodge intrepid, 1996). the impact was so strong that it caused the battery to break in half, among other damages. i was using the seat belt, and saw the airbag light come-on; but the air bag did not activate. i have not gone to the dealer with this information. will do so, once the insurance company has completed its report. my car has been declared a total loss because the repair costs exceed the market value of the vehicle. i did not suffer major injuries as a result of this accident, even though the force of the impact did cause the seat belt to tighten its greeep and this did caused some brusing and severe chest and side pain. i am sending this complaint so that the problem can be noted and if it hasn't reported previously and corrected, that it be done, as to avoid others having the same problem, and face worse luck than i. *jb

Vehicle pulls to the left while driving 25 mph. consumer was able to drive the vehicle home. then, consumer noticed that the bushing was worn out, and steering rack broke. manufacturer was notified.*ak

Entire suspension replaced. according to mechanic suspension was shot, and he has seen this on numerous occasions. he suggested this may be a recall problem, but advised to check into it to be sure. also, i have already replaced the multi-function switch approximately 3 years ago and have just been told it needs to be replaced again. i have been driving with high beams on because the lower beams do not work.*ak

Leaking fuel injector o rings. repair was refused by foot hills chrysler on 10/13/04. nhtsa recall #98v184000. the fuel rail was resealed on nov. 28th 2003 by lithia foothills and subsequest to the repair the injector o rings are leaking. invoice from lithia did not indicate that a pressure test was performed. the recall states that if the o rings fail under pressure they "will be replaced as well". this is the third time for this recall. the first time was in jan. 1999. recall work was performed by lithia foothills at that time. *jb

The rack an pinion bushing failed had to replace the whole rack and pinion.also the axle had to be replaced the ring for the abs and tracion control come off the axle.theres a short in the igntion switch, the gauges dont work, and the car wont drive it gos in default.*ak

While driving children to school my wife stated the car "drifted" in the lane a lot without steering input. i took it for test drive, noticed a strange "feel" to the steering and the drift she spoke of. i decided it was unsafe for her to drive and took it to a local repair shop to be checked. the mechanic put it up on the rack and immediately recognized the problem--the left side steering rack bushings were completely gone. he gave us a quote for the repair (it is being done today), and then he pulled me aside to let me know he had seen this type of failure several times before and suggested i contact the dealer to see if they would "goodwill it" (his term) as he says it was his understanding the part was defective as originally manufactured and that a new style bushing was available that did not deteriorate like this one and was much safer. contacted the dealer in auburn and talked to the service manager, he said car is too old (1996) so we are out of luck and quoted me a repair price almost double the local mechanic. *ak

When the steering wheel was turned to the right, vehicle went to the left. upon lifting the hood consumer noticed that the steering rod was hanging down off the gear box, and a sheared bolt was laying in the engine compartment that was cut in half. vehicle was towed to the dealership, who indicated that gear box was in pieces and needed to be replaced.*ak *tc

I parked my car with the floor shifter in the park position and my key would not come out. i tried several times to turn the wheel and i checked the floor shifter and everything seemed to be the way it should. i drove my car back home and the next day i took it to a local garage. the mechanic at the garage informed me that this was a recall and i should call a chrysler dealer. i did that and took the car in for repair. i also had an unrelated issue with the battery at the same time which they repaired. when i arrived to pick my car up they informed me that they did not have the parts to fix the recall but i could still drive the car. if the key doesn't want to come out then just slam the shifter into park and the key should come right out. i can't believe the dealer told me to do that. it can't be good for the car. i called chrysler and they informed me that there were no chrysler dealers in the pittsburgh area that had the parts to fix this recall. this recall is two months old. i know they are required to notify you of a recall, but aren't they also required to have the parts available to fix it. what happens if there is more damage done to my floor shifter because of having to slam it into park. what if the car rolls away and hurts someone or damages property certainly my insurance won't have to pay for that, clearly chrysler is responsible. i just want to know how i can get my car fixed. thank you for your help. *ak

When the consumer went into the dealership to make an appointment to have the floor shift ignition-park interlock recall 04v021000 repairs done dealership indicated that they will need 2 days to order the recall part, and they will call the consumer when the part arrived. three weeks past, and the dealership never called the consumer. however, consumer called the dealership and was told that the order was cancelled without explaining why.*ak

Headlights are not very bright, even on high beam. it is very difficult to see at night because the headlights do not reflect but a few feet in front of the vehicle. it's even harder to see when a vehicle is coming toward you.*ak

The failure of my air conditioning system. observed smoke coming out of the vents. turned air conditioning system offbriefly. when i turned the system on again it no longer worked. the system was putting out warm air. i take it to be repaired and it only worked a few days. the result is no air condition system, inoperative. i have put spent so much money to get the system fixed. *ak

When driving at night both headlights moved out of place, causing consumer to pull off the road to realign the headlights. consumer stated that the plastic brackets, which support the headlights broke which caused the headlights to fall out of the housing. *ak *nm

I just turned 18 and graduated high school got a job bought a so called good used intrepid. it looked as though it was well maintained i paid over $3,300 for the car and taxes. i drove it for less than ten days and less than 200 miles. now it will not shift out of first gear. i took it to the dodge dealer where they said the transmission kickedout 4 differant internal codes. they said it had to be replaced. then i found out about other people that has had problems with their intrepid transmissions.if dodge would have posted a letter of the problems they have had with the intrepid transmissions i would have never bought a dodge intrepid! i like the car but the bank that i received the loan through said the car is not worth $5,700.00. that is how much that 1996 dodge intrepid will end up costing me. not counting the loss of transportation to get to and from work.

I bought this car less than two weeks ago, i have not even put two thousand miles on the car and the transmission has quit working in third and fourth gear. the motor has begun to use oil and is knocking. while driving,the car loses power and even dies. it also,while idling,begins to revs the engine to an unsafe level and you must shut the car off. i contacted the dealer i bought the car from, greene county auto auction & sales - 6319 hwy. 49 south paragould, ar 72450. the salesman i bought the car from didn't want to take the car back and was extremaly rude when i suggested that he try to work with me on getting the car fixed or trading it in. as i said i have had the car but a short time and all these problems are occuring. he assured me that the car was in good condition and that he had, had it serviced and checked out and there was nothing wrong with it.

Thermostat broke twice, check engine light wont stay off, and the steering which is supposedly a common defect stopped responding and is not able to be fixed.

I have had this ongoing problem with my 1996 dodge intrepid with the brakes. first i thought i just needed new brakes. well i had new brakes put on the car and then a week later, the brakes caught on fire. which damaged the new brakes, the rotar, the calliper, and the spindle. then two weeks later i took the car for the fuel regulater to be replaced and the rotars needed to be turned again already. then in another week and a half the brakes caught on fire again. there is absolutely no sense in this kind of trouble with a brake system. i am a single mother and i have to drive my car with my son in there. it is my belief that if you are gonna make a product you should stand behind it. engine wise the car seems to be fine runs like a charm but that doesnt do me a bit of good if i cant drive it. among the fact that i cant afford to pay for all this trouble with it and pay for the car too.*ak

While traveling on the highway and without prior warning fuel smell was coming though the vents. consumer pulled of the road, opened the hood, and found that fuel rail was leaking gasoline. *ak

The consumer was exiting the turnpike when the front passenger side tire came off while driving through a curve. the vehicle came to rest on the berm. *ph the vehicle sustained damage to the right front quarter panel, rocker panel and rotor. the brake was ground due to it sliding on the asphalt (ohio traffic crash report). *nm

The consumer was able to remove the key out of the ignition when the gear was not in park. please provide further details. *jb

Consumer was informed by the manufacturer that the fuel leakage recall 98v184000 had already been performed on their vehicle. the vehicle is currently leaking fuel and the dealership has indicated that the leak is on the opposite side, not on the side indicated in the recall. *nm

Fuel rail is cracked because no reinforcement was attached. dealer was irresponsible in regards to the consumer's issue. *la consumer feels dealership defrauded him and showed lack of concern with his complaint. *ph

In apirl 1996 i purchased a new 1996 dodge intrepid (vin 2b3hd56f3th52925) from philips motors in philip sd. after approximately 2 years and 30,000 miles i began to notice a grinding noise and clunking in the steering while driving the vehicle from a "cold soak" condition. after approximately 5 minutes and once the car warmed up, the noise would cease. over the course of the past 5 years i have taken the vehicle to five different repair shops in an attempt to isolate and repair the problem. only when i moved to germany (current assignment in the usaf) did a german mechanic discovered the problem; worn rack and pinion steering gear bushing which are allowing the entire unit to shift left and right whenever the steeringwheel is moved. over the past five years i've lived with this problem, i've noticed a continued degredation is steering crispness and increase noise as described above. only when i researched the problem on the internet did i find 2 service recalls for this problem (19-03-97a and 19-001-01). the problem has gotten so bad, about 3 weeks ago i nearly lost control of the car in a sharp turn on a country road here in germany. i was able to recover from the turn (with the assistance of the front tire hitting the curb and bouncing me back into the lane) -- no one was hurt and the car (except the tire) was undamaged. i find it amazing that published service bulletins go un-noticed and high risk components such as steering systems go un-recalled despite potentially catastrophic consequences. my particular problem is further exasperated by the high speed nature of german autobahns.*ak

I took my 1996 dodge to the dealer for recall #790 on 03/29/99 and i can prove that they did not replace the o-rings or reinforce the fuel rail. the car started leaking fuel and i am lucky that it did not burn up. i feel that someone should check and see if this 1 dealers fraud or if it is nationwide.*ak

When antifreeze was poured into the reservoir, it leaked out of the radiator which caused the vehicle to overheat. please provide further details. *jb

I have a 1996 dodge intrepid i bought in 1998 i have had numerous steering problems with this vehicle and have spent much money to fix this car. the bushings have been replaced,the bearings have been replaced, the power steering pump has been replaced, the steering hoses have been replaced,all this was done at under 55,000 miles and luckily gefore my fiance and my children were seriously hurt in an acident due to steering lose or control. these problems totaled around 2,500.to fix. now we are having the same problems again with the car having 90,000 miles now the power steering pump is out again and the rack and pinion is out and it is impossible to steer. we are a low income family so trade the car in is out of the question and getting it fixed right away is sometimes not possible. just by pure luck i was looking for prices of rack and pinions and i just stummbled across this web site and i am glad i did.*ak

I have a 1996 model dodge intrepid. about a year and half ago, in one rainy morning i drove my car to work, just a few minutes driving on the road at approximately 50 mph, the engine quit working... i had the car towed to the garage and finally took it to the chrysler dealership to get it checked, and was told i have a intake gasket problem, it cost me more than $300 to get it fixed. however, similar problem still comes and goes mysteriously after that. the most recent occurrence was about 2 month ago. i keep taking to the auto shop but no one can tell me what is wrong with the car. it is a 3.5 engine and i am not the original owner, maybe the previous owner had the same problem. *nlm

While traveling 10 mph and without any indication two half inch bolts had broke. dealer has been contacted. *ak the consumer crossed over the rail road tracks when the steering wheel turned completely around without changing the direction of the wheels. the bolts which held the rods to the rack and pinion gear box had broken into two parts. *scc *scc *jb

Vehicle description: passenger vehicles built with 3.5l engines. the fuel injection delivery system can leak fuel from some of the sealing o-rings or from hair line cracks in the fuel injection rail. dealers will replace the fuel rail o-rings and reinforce the outlet (passenger) side fuel rail. vehicles showing fuel leakage on the outlet fuel rail must have the outlet rail replaced which includes changing the upper and lower injector o-rings. consumer has the same problem. however this vehicle was not recalled due to the vin.*ak

Defective steering gearbox bushings. bushings went defective after 70,000 miles, most of which were highway miles. have noticed knock when first starting to turn wheel progressively getting worse. have called manufacturer who stated that it is not a defect in workmanship. it is a defect in workmanship.*ak

Consumer was involved in a head-on collision while traveling approximately 35 mph. neither the front driver or passenger air bags deployed.*ak

The fuel rail was leaking. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for repairs. *nlm

Driver's seat "falls" backward when "taking off" from stop. *nlm

The engine light stayed on. computer diagnostic showed the o2 sensors needed to be replaced. after the repair was made, the engine light was still on. the mechanic then stated the water pump was leaking and needed to be replaced. *jb

The engine light stayed on continuously. the mechanic determined two o2 sensors needed to be replaced. *jb

The hood latch released, which caused the hood to slam up against the windshield. the consumer was blinded by the hood and was forced to stop the vehicle. *jb

The dealer refused to replace the recalled fuel injector (nhtsa recall # 98-v-184-000). *nlm

The o rings were defective, which caused fuel to leak. the problem was repaired, however it recurred. *jb

In june of 2002 my a/c compressor "froze" leaving me without my air conditioner during june, july, and part of august. i had the compressor and other components fixed at the end of august at the cost of $504.00. i got to use my a/c for a whole 3 weeks until the weather cooled off! now (may 2003), my a/c doesn't work again! apparently there is a leaky h-valve and other components that need to be replaced at the cost of $680.00. i refuse to shell out any more money for this piece of crap car as this is my 3rd complaint to nhtsa. *jb

Two weeks after buying my 1996 dodge intrepid es i felt a strange jolt from my front passenger side wheel when turning corners. this jolt was accompanied by a popping noise. upon investigation by a professional, i was told that my tie rod was about to come loose from the wheel and that i was lucky i noticed the problem in time. had the tie rod actually come loose i would have lost control of that wheel, leaving me control of just the drivers side wheel. *jb

Headlight dimmer switch is malfunctioning. the headlights are stuck on their high-beams. when cycling between the low/high beams, the low beam headlights will come on in addition to the high beams, which will not turn off. when "flicking" the dimmer switch or trying to flash someone, sometimes the headlights go out completely, leaving me with my parking lights.*jb

Steering issues rampant with my 1996 dodge intrepid. i have already had to have some work done on it and now i have a problem with the steering making a clunking noise when the steering wheel reaches the center point.*jb

Excessive rack and pinion steering noise especially in cold weather, rack and pinion mounting bolt bushings almost completely gone. car has severe steering shifting when rounding corners or curves. diagnoses requires new rack and pinion replacement.

I own a 1996 dodge inrepid with 61,255 miles on it as of today ( 1/16/2003). this vehicle has had three failuers of the water pump at a cost to repaire of $500.00 each time to repaire. i have also had the front suspension fail, which cost $1185.00 to repaire. this vehicle is not driven hard, mileage will show maybe 10,000 miles per year. i feel by the number of complaints on your system that the manufacture has had more than normal number of complaints for both these problems. i think a recall is called for, and some sort of remibrusment for the cost of repaires made. all my repaires where done by a goodyear facility or dealership.

While traveling about 35mph on the highway the steering column locked up.please fill in additional information dealer is aware of the problem.*jb

The multifuntion switch that controls the headlights and wipers started to smoke and burned out. my winshield wipers came on and i lost my low beam headlight. in the process of replacing the switch i found the wiring and plug to be burned and melted. one wire had about 3/4 inch insulation missing. the multifunction switch and wire lume now have to be replaced at a cost of $200.

The headlights were dull, making visibility impossible. the dealer was contacted. ts scc

Consumer states that vehicle's steering wheel was wandering excessively resulting in loss of complete control. problem was progressively getting worse until rack and pinion assembly failed while driving. ts

Consumer states that brake pedal intermittenly will go down to the floor when depressed, greatly increasing vehicle's stopping distance. problem has been reoccurring since 1997. dealer has not been able to thoroughly duplicate or remedy problem. ts

Tie end rod has been repaired one time before, repair the steering, it was uncontrollable, when car hits rocks, the care would jerk to one side of the highway.

Vehicle constanly fails to start per consumer. the dealerships indicated that the cause could be a bad ignition switch or lever. cause unkown. ts

Consumer states that when hit at 40mph the air bag did not deploy causing injuries to the consumer. dealer notified. nlm

While traveling on highway heard a noise coming from the front of vehicle. dealership is aware of problem.*akboth of the inner tie rods and eight bushings needed replacement. the dealer informed consumer that this failure was premature. *jg

While driving at 30 mph consumer rear ended another vehicle and none of the air bags deployed. then, while sitting there consumer was rear ended by another vehicle at 50 mph, and the air bags still did not deploy. contacted dealer. *ak

Consumer states vehicle was involved in a frontal collision w/a tree at approx 40mph. both driver and passenger air bags did not deploy. nlm *yh

While driving engine blewout with no warning. engine was replaced with owner then smelling fuel. several months later,engine caught on fire. please describe details. *ak

Nhtsa recall98 v 184 000/manufacturer's recall 790 concerning fuel leakage: fuel line from the injector system is leaking fuel onto 3.5l engine. dealer notified, and informed consumer that this vehicle vehicle was not covered under recall due to vin. feel free to provide any further information.*ak

Bushings in rack and pinion system along with tie rods failed resulting in vehicle wobbling severely. dealer states that this is common for those vehicles. please describe details

While parked fuel line ruptured. had vehicle towed to dealer and repaired it. *ak consumer stated that the fuel line ruptured and spray fuel all over engine and onto the floor. *yh

When making turns there is a creaking sound coming from front of vehicle, mostly after first start. mechanic stated rack and pinion needed to be replaced.*ak

Driver applied brakes at 40 mph to avoid a bus and noticed oil on the ground about 40 miles later. took vehicle to dealer, and dealer stated that gaskets on wheel cylinder had popped out, and were causing brake fluid to leak. driver insisted that if all brake fluid leaked out there will be no brakes. please provide any further information. *ak

Vehicle taken to dealer for timing belt problem. dealer found a problem with fuel rail leaking.*ak *tt

Upon starting vehicle fire broke out in throttle body. cause unknown. please provide any further information.*ak

After vehicle was purchased it was then discovered that vehicle was not equipped with air bags. please give any further details.*ak

Consumer states her son was driving when an auto turned in front of him, which caused damage to left front fender, middle of hood, and passenger side front. neither side air bag deployed. no injuries was sustained. nlm

Engine sporadically stalls out while drivng. sometimes it will start backing up if engine cools off. dealer has seen vehicle 4 times, and cant duplicate or fix problem. *ak

After inspection of vehicle mechanic diagnosed that bushings were premturely wearing out. this prevented vehicle from being aligned. please give any further details.*ak

Steering wheel makes a grinding noise while turning vehicle, dealership is aware of problem, rack pinion failure caused vehicle to run off the road.*ak *slc

While turning vehicle to right it kept going straight. driver took vehicle to a mechanic, and they stated that rack and pinion steering had disintegrated. mechanic replaced rack and pinion and tie rods. *ak

Car started shaking violently at around 55-65, took it to the mechanic and tie rods had to be replaced. has much other damage (maybe partly due to the bad tie rods or maybe due to the deficient design) that i can file other reports on if needed.*ak

When putting the car into reverse the car goes foreward when in drive the car will not go at all. please describe. *ak

Steering gets loose and making a clunking noise. over bumps vehicle moves around alot. consumer has repaired rack and pinion a total of 3 times. driver's side is the most recent. mehanic has seen5 different vehicles in the past few months.*ak

While driving about 25 mph she smelled something burning, then, she noticed smoke coming from dash. she shut off engine, plastic on dash had melted. vehicle towed to dealer, replaced dash, and electrical parts. did not tell consumer what parts were replaced.*ak

While driving approximately 5 mph, bolts in rack and pinion steering broke, resulting in loss of steering control. consumer was able to stop vehicle without incident. a private repair shop diagnosed the problem. please provide any additional information / attachments. *note: parts available for inspection.*ak

Vehicle has sudden lost of power without prior notice. dealership was aware of problem . also, it felt like vehicle was running on five cylinders instead of six. *ak

When consumer is backing out there is a noise in the rear of vehicle. dealership had been notified.*ak

While driving 40 mph front end began to shake, steering wheel as well. engine engine check light was flashing, taken to dealer who replaced ingnition coil. *ak

Consumer can hear a clunking sound whenever driving over a bump, sound comes from left front or middle of vehicle. not taken to dealer yet. *ak

Consumer hit deer and broke headlight on driver's side. dealer replaced headlight cover, new one is seen through, passenger's side one is milky from age and moisture that collects behind cover . when consumer drives at night, visibility is impaired due to one side being bright, and other side very dim.*ak

When first starting vehicle and turning wheels there is a loud scraping sound coming from front end. also, steering rack and pinion needs to be replaced. *ak

When car has been running for a while one can smell gas. took to dealer, and they can't seem to smell the gas. *ak

Recall 00 v 135 000/ignition switch/wiring: vehicle experienced a shortage in wiring harness. dealer/manufacturer notified, and informed consumer that this vehicle was not cover under recall due to vin. feel free to provide any further details on this matter. *ak

Recall 98v184 000/fuel injection system leakage: received a manufacturer's recal 790 notice concerning dealer's corrective action that stated the following: dealers will replace the nitrile rubber o-rings in the fuel rail with fluorocarbon o-rings. if fuel injectior o-rings leak after pressure testing, injector o-rings will be replaced as well. both dealer and manufacturer informed consumer that they were only responible to replace o-rings, and injector would be at consumer's cost. dealer's service manger name is john naro at forthteen hundred motors in nashua, nh; phone # 603/888-0200. manufacturer's service representative is deanna furnari. *ak both the dealer and the manufacturer claimed they were responsible only for the fuel rail o-rings. *yh

While traveling noticed a raw gas smell inside vehicle . dealer stated fuel rail and injections needed to be replaced. please provide further information.*ak

There was a thunk noise under car that consumer could hear through steering. took vehicle to dealer, and they said it was a bushing in the rack and pinion steering. *ak

While driving about 25 mph, all of sudden windshield wipers activated and smoke started coming from dashbroad. smoke fogged up all windows, causing poor driver visibility. driver quckly pulled into an automotive shop. a mechanic disconnected the battery. mechanic found all three wiring harness were melted together. repairs to vehicle through state farm insurance. *ak

Defective sun roof flew off while driving due to glue coming apart which may have caused a crash or injuries. *ak *ml

While driving about 15 mph heard a popping noise from front of vehicle. consumer lost control of vehicle, and vehicle had to be towed. *ak

Rack & pinion steering & bushings were changed approximately 13 months ago. now problem has returned. rack & pinion steering/inner tie rod ends are wearing excessively. this causes vehicle to be either thrown to the left or to the right, if cuts or deep cracks are in the road. will be taking vehicle back to dealership to check. *ak

While driving 5 mph out of a parking lot steering rack and pinion broke, causing no steering control. please give any further details. *ak

The underside of instrument panel on driver's side obstructs the usage of brake & accelerator pedal. this causes loss of driving or control of vehicle while backing out of driveway. been to dealership & mechanic drilled holes in panel. problem not solved. *ak

While driving when it rains steering feels real loose. it feels as though consumer is on glass. *ak

Engine overheated. consumer pulled to side, added coolant, and it immediately reheated. took vehicle to dealer, and they said engine head gasket needed to be replaced. also, vehicle was unsafe because there was no power steering when car went dead. *ak

Recall 98v184000/fuel leakage: vehicle was taken in for recall repairs. when returned vehicle commenced to vibrate/ sacked/ran rough and hesitated. vehicle was returned to dealer twice for repairs, but problem still remains the same. vehicle was not experiencing any problem until taken in for recall repairs. dealer currently refuses to correct the problem. seeking help from nhtsa in this matter. *ak

While driving consumer noticed gas fumes in the car, and the fumes kept getting stronger and stronger. vehicle was taken to garage. mechanic informed consumer of a serious fuel leak. fuel was leaking onto the manifold from the fuel rails and o-rings. a puddle of fuel had formed that could have ignited. *ak

There is noise coming from the front end of the vehicle due to the inner tie rods breaking. dealer replaced the tie rods/stuts/ sway bar, and did a front end alignment. *yc

The airbag light continues to illuminate while the vehicle is in motion. dealer has been notified. *ak

While driving vehicle at various speeds engine would overheat. the temperature gauge would run hot. had noticed smoke from under the hood. took vehicle to dealer more than 5 times for problem to be repaired. had engine cylinder/ engine head gasket cover kit/bracket pump/mtg/temperature gauge & outlet cylinder replaced. *ak

Ea99031, in cold climate, 35 degrees or below, or when first starting and the vehicle is "cold", steering rack and pinion makes a noise and feels "slow" which may result in loss of vehicle control and crash. this clunking noise is heard for ten to fifteen minutes or until vehicle is warm. *ak

Steam is coming from the steering column which caused the headlights and the windshield wipers to be inoperable intermittently. manufacturer will be notified. *ak

While car was shut off for about 10 minutes while consumer was shopping, heard an annoucement that someone's car was burning in the parking lot. fire department was called to the scene. it burned so badly that it was totalled. driver s was affected the most by the fire. *ak

Driver hit a tree head-on in wet conditions at 30mph, and neither driver's nor passenger's airbags deployed properly. airbags just oozed out of the steering wheel. airbags did not have air in them. dealer has not seen vehicle. *ak

90% of the time while driving windshield wipers come on without application. the windsheild wiper module has been replaced twice by the dealership. consumer is still experienicng a problem with the vehicle. report given by daughter, heather reinhart. *ak

There is a bolt loose in the steering gear, causing the tires to wear. also causing the driver to lose control. dealer has not seen vehicle. *ak

While starting vehicle while it was cold vehicle would make a loud noise. dealer stated bushing were gone. please provide further informaton. *ak

While going 35mph vehicle started making a clunking noise. another driver noticed tire loose & informed the driver it was going back & forth & about to fall off. the right rear axle had broken. managed to get to a service station. then had vehicle towed to dealership for repairs. vehicle was never involved in a crash nor was anything hit that would cause tracking arm to break. *ak

Consumer was pulling out of the parking lot with the steering wheel to the left when there was a loud noise coming from the vehicle.rack pinion bolts broke, causing the steering wheel to spin, and the tires went straight. *ak the four bolts holding the steering housing to the firewall failed caused the steering to fail. *yh

Intermittently while at a stop vehicle lurged forward and stalled at an intersection which almost caused a crash 2x. dealer could not determine the cause. dealer wants to install a "co-pilot" so they can determine a problem. please provide further information. *ak

Vehicle has a problem with the headlight and dimmer, when turnning the dimmer the headlights will shut off. dealer has been contacted. *ak

There was a leakage within the water pump. consumer had water pump replaced twice, and water pump is leaking again. and dealer states that the problem is coming from the engine too. *ak

While making a left turn steering wheel would not return for normal driving. please provide further information. *ak

The vehicle pulls to one side when braking or accelerating and the steering is uncontrolable due to the bushing coming loose on the inner tie rod. dealer has fixed problem. *ak

Had receivednotice #98v184000 in the mail. contacted dealership to have "o" rings replaced. vehicle towed to dealer due to fuel leakage. the "o" rings had broken & were not to b e replaced. they were not sealing. the remedy failed to work. *ak

The headlight mounts broke causing extreme stopping conditions. the headlights flicker causing distraction to other vehicles which may result in collision. consumer contacted dealer and manufacturer. *ak *yc

Defective bushing malfunctioned, causing the vehicle to vibrate harshly which may cause loss of vehicle control. this happened twice. dealer could not determine the cuause, but kept replacing the bushing. please provide further information. *ak

Left front the tire rod is brushing against the rotors.

Innertie rod has become defective ,affecting rack and pinion, and causing loss of control. *ak

We started to experience a fluid leak on the car. the dealer, upon examining the car, determined that the intake manifold was leaking. they also determined that 2 bolts involved in that installation had sheared. there had been no work done on that area of the car. having only 55,000 miles it seems preposterous that this is anything other than a manufacturing defect. i have contacted dodge and they had no interest in this situation at all. dt

When are you guys going to take some action against this very serious design/part failure. i have searched the database and there are a lot of complaints about steering failure. this will cost someone their life if it hasn't already. here is the problem. the bushings on the inner tie rod deteriorate. on my car it happened to the passenger side bushing at 30,000 miles. i was able to replace the tie rod(they didn't just sell the bushing). at about 33,000 the other one went out so i replace it. had i not known what to look for (the wavering to the left and right on a straight road allerted me) i could have eventually sheered the bolts on the gear housing. at 71,000 the stearing started acting up again. well this time the bushings that hold the gear housing to the frame have deteriorated. fortunately it was caught in time. what happened here was as you steered left or right the gear housing would move about three inches. as you would oversteer, the steering gear box would go as far one way as it could then it would actually turn the wheels. it is obvious to me that there is a major defect in the design of the steering. please do something before someone dies and before we have to waste more money paying dodge for something that should break this easy. they sell us a piece of crap and we have to pay them big to repair it. do something already!*ak

I am submitting a complaint about deficiencies in the durability of the inner tie rod bushings and rack and pinion steering bushings on a 1996 dodge intrepid, vin [xxx]. premature wear out of these items are a safety concern. on multiple occasions, it felt like i was losing control of the steering on the car. some of those occasions occurred while driving across an uneven, washboard type asphalt road surface. other occasions were on a smooth concrete or asphalt road. on all occasions, i had to slow down considerably to regain control of the car. i have had to replace the inner tie rod bushings twice, once in march of 1999 at 49,818 miles and again in august of 2002 at 89,404 miles. the rack and pinion steering bushings were also replaced during the august, 2002 repair. none of these parts should be considered normal maintenance items. total repairs have cost me $1,071. i have read numerous other postings of a similar nature on intrepids and other related chrysler vehicles and am concerned about the safety of these cars. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Bushings supporting 3 of the 4 connection points of the front subframe cradle have failed, resulting in a clunking sound when moving. the clunking sound has been around for a long time, but has gotten worse recently. in looking under the car i discovered that the lower halves of the rubber bushings have fallen out at three of the four locations. this cradle supports the engine, transmission, and all steering components.

Entering highway and pushed on gas pedal hard to merge into traffic, gas throttle stayed open and car kept going faster and faster. was going from 10 mph to 80+ mph for about 3/4 of a mile and somehow was finally able to slow car down enough to drop car into park. engine ran hard for another 10 to 12 seconds before it disingauged from transmission. found out that cable from gas pedal had a frayed wire and was getting stuck on the plastic housing that covers the wire. though my life was coming to an end because i could't stop my car and it kept getting faster and faster. thought i would have to ditch it somewhere and take a chance on making it. if you need more info, please contact me. ended up also going to the hospital later that day because i started to have an axciety attack from all this going on. nlm

The fuel rail was repaired as part of a recall in 1998. the same part has failed again in the same fashion with the dangers involved.

The rubber bushings (under the bolts) that connect the rack and pinion to the chassis of the automobile eroded and disintegrated making the bolts loose and rendering the rack and pinion to become very loose. the bolts could have broken or snapped off and the entire rack and pinion could have fallen off, maybe at a high rate of speed causing a major accident. the rack and pinion is now damaged and will have to be replaced.*ak

I have owned the dodge for almost 2 years, this is the second waterpump that i have had to replace. the first was covered under my 3/36000 mi warrentee. the same thing happened this time. the water pump seesed,which in turn took out my timing belt, also took out a few other components. i contacted the company they told me that there was nothing that i could do because i didn't have the car towed to there service garage. i had it towed to my machanic. i was also told that this is not the first time that this has happened to this kind of car. my machinic said that he has seen other dodge intriped with the same problem. *ak

Under normal driving conditions the fuel line fitting failed at the point where the fuel line enters the fuel injection rail. the result was a large amount of sprayed gas all over the top of the engine. i was lucky that the engine was cold and that the gas did not ignite from the exhaust manifold or a spark from the alternator. i my opinion this should not happen under any circumstance. if this happend on a summer day the car would have been engulfed in flames in a matter of seconds. i feel that this was a serious enough defect that i am taking the time to fill out this form. the car is scheduled to be repaired tomorrow 3/8/01 so the part in question will be available if needed. the vehicle is at stevens dodge in milford, ct (203) 876-6464 where the service is to be performed. you can contact me if you have any questions. marc kavulich. *ak

When it was cold out we heard a chunk noise from the front under the car when the steering wheel was turned in either direction . this went away when it warmed up in about 5 minutes. we took i t to the dealer and he told us it was the rack and pinion and it needed to be replaced. we did not beleive that this was an item that should ever have to be replaced ,especailly at $1300, so we contacted the manufacturer and we received a letter telling us they could not help because it was out of warranty. i asked a salesman how could a 4 year old car have to have the rack and pinion replaced and he told me it was quite common.*ak

We have had three fuel rail problems they were all covered under recall notice. i dont think that it should have to be corrected that many times. the water pump went out a few weeks after we bought it dealer repaired it. the steering rack went out 2 weeks after we bought it dealer replaced. the tie rod bolts came out 6months of steering was replaced. dealer replaced. there stillis a problem with transmission and the lines. also with the oil sending unit . i think this car is a real lemon. how many major components of a car can fail there are a few more that i have not reported on this form lower intake gasket tie rod bolts . i think the company should buy back this car because there are too many major problems with it for only being 5 years old. *ak

When the car was purchased (used) in 3/99, the rear defroster didn't work. the car was sent to charlie thomas chrysler for repair and the fuseable link was repaired (6/99). on 10/25/00 the rear defroster was on and smoke started billowing out of the interior vents. i stopped the car and had the car towed to clearlake dodge for repair. the mechanic repaired wire harness damage leading up to the fuseable link and replaced the entire main wire harness due to melting and shorting in the main harness. the rear defroster circuit was discovered to be shorted into a metal clip and it is presumed that this caused the overload. the overload caused melting and scorching in the rear defrost circuit and the main wire harness. the fuseable link failed to protect the main wire harness. the failure of the fuseable link caused a dangerous condition that could have led to a fire or an accident (if all electrical power was lost).

In cold weather (under 40 f) after the first couple of years the steering makes loud banging noises when wheels are turned for the first 10 minutes after startup. cause: rack & pinion bushings dry out. ultimate risk: steering will loosen over time. cure: on 1996 model only, bushings are not replaceable. entire rack must be replaced at a cost of $1200. poor design means 1) potential for steering failure 2) warm-weather drivers won't have any warning 3) price discourages repair. this could turn into a problem as these cars age. *ak

This is supplemental to odi no. 736871 - further examination of parts indicates that neither set of bolt retaining tabs had been set at the factory- allowing both tie rod bolts to back out almost half way - one set of tabs had been set to stop further turning by someone, probably during servicing - the other bolt continued to back out a couple of turns - sometime during all of this, both bolts broke thru past the halfway point and both broke the rest of the way on 11/13.2000 - disabling the steering. *ak

Had the lt tie rod replaced and now the rt is bad, my wife normally drives the car and i happened to drive the car . i noticed the car was steering odd and when i went around a corner it felt like the front end was shifting. when letting off the gas and giving it gas the car would torque steer very bad jumping to the left. i took the car to a local shop who found the problem right away, recommended that we didn't drive the car. he also showed me the steering rack bushings were going bad, he says the only way to repair is to replace the entire rack as the bushing are not available by themselves as are the 95's and below. he told me that both are very common problems for the dodge intrepid and both could have serious problems with their failures. i am going to have the repairs to the tie rod done promptly and if the rack is road worthy i will delay that repair but keep a close watch on further deteriation of the bushings. *ak

As my wife was in a parked position in a parking lot, she proceeded to pull out. to do this she had to go around a light pole. as she pulled out she hit the light pole. she got out of the vehicle and inspected the damages. the damages were, crushed left front bumper, a small nic on the hood and a damaged left front headlight light assembly. with damaged not looking severe, she proceeded to bring the automobile home. on her way she immediately experienced a check enginge light, alternator ligh. as i went to inspect the car, i noticed the power steering pully was completely missing and the main serpentine belt was missing. the frame was no bent and the is no way that anything could have touched the power steering pump causing the pully to break off. i am courios to ask if this is a nown problem. thank you for your time, larry roudebush. *ak

During and after driving the vehicle, a 1996 dodge intrepid with a 3.3l engine,there was a strong smell of raw gasoline. i took the car in for service and the resolution was replacement of the fuel rail due to cracks and the fule injectors due to leaking o-rings. these problems are identical to those addressed in nhtsa campaign id number: 98v184000 which address the 3.5l engine in 1996 dodge intrepids.

I'm a mother of a 2 year old, and have to take her in my car everyday. come to find out my bushings are bad, and that whole part has to be replaced with the part costing $800. plus labor. the dealership in town said that it is a common thing in the 96 and 97 intrepids, because they went to the new body, i can't afford a new car, or $800 to get this fix, and believe that dodge should do a recall on this, because it is unsafe to drive and is common. i've read lots of complaits of this same problem, and worry about having my daughter in the car everyday. my steering is very lose because of this problem. i did not include date and milage of when this happened, because it was a slow process. i just noticed when it was making the load noice when i turn. *ak

Bushings worn on both left and right inner tie rods. this caused steering to shake and could have resulted in loss of wheel(s) while driving. tires were worn badly due to tie rod problem. remedy consisted of replacing both tie rods and both front tires.

The front tie rods and the bushings in the rack and pinion failed. the steering at first became very sluggish and then the steering wheel got to where it would not return to center. it got so bad that it would not trigger the turn signal switch. we first had the tie rods replaced and the car aligned but that did not take care of the problem. we contacted several repair shops and then were told that the entire rack assembly would have to be replaced. we contacted champion chrysler in independence, mo and were told that there was an "upgrade kit" available to replace the bushings in the rack. we purchased the kit but no one would take on the repair other than the dealer, so we were forced to have it repaired by the dealer.*ak

While pulling out of a parking space, the steering failed. subsequent examination showed that the inner tie rod attachment bolts both shearred off and the tie rods separated from the steering rack. the vehicle had these tie rods replaced in sept 98 and the steering rack replaced in jan 1999. unknown if this is related to tsb 190899 but attachment bolts do appear to have failed from improper torque values.

The headlights fill with condensation making their light output minimal and dangerous at night. they are $300 for a new pair and i can't keep purchasing a new pair every 20,000 miles. they are delaminating and the dealer says "this is a common problem with the intrepid" yet they won't fix it. the dealer even suggested that i purchase "illegal" high output off road use only bulbs to make up for the "poor performance". every intrepid i see around town has the same problem!! help! *ak

Front brake rotors consistantly warp. only had the car 1 year, and they have warped 4 times, replacing them twice, and resurfacing them 2 more times. they are now warped for the fifth time. rotors were replaced with oem parts at a authorized chrysler dealer. *ak

Power steering has constant whine when turning or accelerating. transmission shudders and skips when shifting during acceleration. dealer states power steering pump and entire transmission must be replaced.

Left tie rod failed originally in june 99. in jan. 2000. the left tie rod separated from the rack and pinion gear assy. tis resulted is loss of steering, but car was brought to a safe stop. this is the second failure of the tie rods and the firstt failure of the rack and pinion gear assy. i have never seen a car have this kind of failure before. i have grave concerns about trusting the safety of the rack and pinion steering on this car. *ak

Two different sets of rubber bushings in the steering have failed on this vehicle. the tie rod end bushings failed on the right side causing a shimmying in the steering wheel. the more dangerous failure is the four rack and pinion bushings that hold it in place. the failure of these bushings allow the entire rack to move laterally, causing loss of steering control in sudden maneuvers. one night while avoiding a dog in the roadway, i attempted to move the car a foot to the left, but instead the car lurched all the way into oncoming traffic, nearly causing an accident. the dealer makes you buy the entire rack at a cost of $700 or more because no aftermarket manufacturer makes this component yet. i complained while the vehicle was still under warranty at 32000 miles of a creaking in the front while turning the steering wheel, but they did not identify the problem until complete failure at a later date. *ak

Steering rack sways from side to side producing a clicking sound. the body member (a plate) underneath the rack also sways. the dealer (woodbridge dodge,nj) says, that the rack bushings have worn out. which is very abnormal. but they won't replace the bushings-only. the cost of rack replacement is more that $1500.

Rack & pinion has been replaced once & same symptoms are occuring again. there is a popping noise in the front when turning. due to the failure of the steering, we have had to replace tires & struts sooner then normal. brakes have also been replaced because rotors were bad & brake pads were warped. rear window glass was removed & a new section between the rear door & back glass was replace while under warranty. the same condition exists again. the back door is very difficult to open due to misalaignment. dealer refused to provide any service after original warranty. chrysler corp. authorized the replacement of rack & pinion, water pump, & rear wheel cylinders at 45450 miles. due to defects, mainly in the steering, i continue to pay a mechanic to assess the safety of operation of this vehicle.

While driving on the interstate the sun roof blew off the vehical, causing other vehicals behind to swerve in order to miss the shattering glass. fortunatly, no one was injured and no futher damage caused. at the time of the incident the sunroof was in the closed position with the interior sun shade also being closed. the car was traveling on the interstate at approximately 70mph. there was extra wind noise noted right before the sun roof blew off. this incident could not possibly be due to normal wear and tear of a vehicle. all the local dealers agreed that chrysler should be held accountable, but since it was beyond the warranty they were unable to assist me. the service manager, frank bears, at gulf coast dodge in fort myers, fl advised me to contact the chrysler corp., giving me their 800 number. he told me to use phrases and words such as " you (meaning dogde) are lucky no one was hurt or that there was no property damage. mr. bear told me to use words liable." i also called another dealership in the area and got a similar response. unfortunatly, the chrysler corp. customer service center was not as agreeable as their local service centers. the woman, carol green, told me that since this had never happened before that chysler would not be able to accomodate me. she said that i could call my insurance company. i told her that this was unacceptable and she said that i was welcome to call the state attorney generals office. eventually, this led me to you. my file number with chrysler is #571792. since it is difficult to write in this form i would suggest that you speak to me directly. i need to know if i should go ahead and pay to have it fixed before someone examines the vehicle. it truly looks as if the glass was glued onto the frame. there are no appeaent bolts or holes where bolts might be. the frame doesn't not appear to be bent and seems to work smoothly even without the glass. this is my main mode of transportation. *ak

My car dies. i went through customer arbitration and their decision was "the stalling concern remain unresolved." i will be happy to send you a copy of the letter. it does not feel good to know that three people decided my life is not worth spit. *ak

We bought this car as a program and it sure has been in the shop alot. i also heard from the area mechanics that they have replaced alot of the racks on the dodge intrepids and how come there is not a recall on this item.

There is a loud "clunking noise" coming from the front end of the car on cold mornings. the car must be warmed up for approximately 15 minutes. if you start the car and go the noise occurs. when you turn the wheel to the left and right it clunks until the car is warmed up. we had the dealer check it out on two occassions. the first time they did not hear it because it was a fairly warm day. the second time, the car was dropped off the night before. we specified to them to start the car the first thing in the morning. when we checked with them to see if they started the car when we told them to, they said they did in the afternoon. they claim they still did not hear the noise. the car is still making the c lunking noise on cold mornings and sometimes if it is cold in the afternoon.

Strong fuel odor from under hood

The air conditioner blows warm air only when car is just out of standard warranty. resulting evaporator repair is covered under extended warranty. water pump failure caused overheating which caused car to stop. resulted in timing belt problem & repair. cost $500.00 rod bearing problem occurred 1-1/2 weeks after water pump/timing belt repair. estimated cost $2000.00.

Noticed the smell of gas in and around the car. made appointment for normal maintenance check and found out fuel rail was leaking gas. luckily i had a warrenty contract for which the part for replacement of fuel rail was covered. i do have a $100.00 co-pay for which i would like to have refunded. was told by chrysler corp. that this was not possible, without the correction to fuel rail my car could have been engulfed in flames while driving. chrysler could at least refund my co-pay. i don't think i should pay for their bad parts. i was also told by chrysler that they were not going to recall the 1996 dodge intrepid. it has the same fuel rail problem as the 1993 which was recalled this year.

On four separate occasions our vehicle has shifted into 2nd gear when running and could not be upshifted or downshifted. the only gears available were 2nd or reverse. the dealer replaced the solenoid twice and the tc module once. the fourth time it happened, the diagnostics did not show anything wrong and the dealer did not replace anything. the dealer stated that they were unable to replicate problem. each time the transmission failed if the car was shut dow and allowed to cool for an hour or more it appeared to reset and operate properly for a while. if the car was driven for a longer period of time after reset the problem came back.

Engine overheated; coolant was added twice over three days. car was brought to mechanic; mechanic found pinhole in water pump, which leaks under high rpm.
